For 28 years, Marco Antonio Lopez Gutierrez pulled off a brazen identity theft scheme using a stolen birth certificate and Social Security number to forge passports, driver’s licenses, credit cards, and even take out loans—all while the real victim, who’d been jailed for crimes committed under his stolen identity, fought to clear his name. Gutierrez even served time in prison under the victim’s identity, and later tried to play the victim himself to get a public defender.
