Latest / Stuff Keeps Happening / Maybe Some Kings
Transcript
- 0:00Hello. I completed all of my quest objectives,
- 0:03but stuff still happened. So what's up? No Kings,
- 0:08again, and still, and again. This past weekend
- 0:11saw worldwide protests for the No Kings protests,
- 0:14also known as the No Tyrants protest, if you're
- 0:17in a place that... does do Kings. If you're in
- 0:20one of those, uh, one of those Kingler locations,
- 0:22if you're feeling like this is deja vu, it's
- 0:24because this is not the first no Kings protest.
- 0:26And this one was bigger than the last one. The
- 0:29last no Kings protest saw about 5 million people
- 0:31take to the streets in the U S this one saw estimates
- 0:34say about 7 million. That doesn't include counts
- 0:36from worldwide protests of people going through
- 0:39the streets in other countries to be like, hey,
- 0:41the Trump administration fucking sucks. There
- 0:43wasn't really much violence to speak of. These
- 0:45were pretty tame marches. It was a lot of people
- 0:48who were just disgruntled voters going out and
- 0:50marching. It's about as basic as an American
- 0:53protest can get. That doesn't mean it's meritless
- 0:56or useless. Just basic. I only mention that because
- 1:00Republicans are trying to paint it as a hate
- 1:02America rally and tried to say that the people
- 1:04who are going are like dark money funded Antifa
- 1:07warriors. Meanwhile, if you look at any picture
- 1:10of the crowd, it's just a bunch of like old white
- 1:13people holding signs about like brunch and stuff.
- 1:16Like, yeah, there are libs, but like that's not
- 1:18violent Antifa warriors like me. I am a violent
- 1:23Antifa warrior. Hear my battle cry. It is also
- 1:30notable that the current sitting president of
- 1:32the United States, a person who is in charge
- 1:35of a country, posted a handful of AI videos in
- 1:38response to the protests. One of which is a video
- 1:41of him with a king's crown on his head, flying
- 1:44a fighter jet over protesters and then opening
- 1:47up a hatch to drop what appears to be a bunch
- 1:50of diarrhea. all over the protesters. That is
- 1:53a choice, my guy. We're waiting for more details,
- 1:55but if these numbers hold, this would be the
- 1:57biggest one -day U .S. protest since, like, 1970.
- 2:01And the third largest of all U .S. history. Now,
- 2:04I know there's a lot of people who may say demonstrations
- 2:06like this. They're saying that it's useless,
- 2:08it doesn't do anything. Where has this gotten
- 2:10us? I get your frustration. But to look at the
- 2:14mobilization of 7 million people... And to say
- 2:19that that's meaningless is just absurd. Just
- 2:21because this is not a group of people who are
- 2:23now ready to start the revolution doesn't mean
- 2:27it's not valuable. People are radicalized at
- 2:30varying paces and you can either help chip in
- 2:32with that or you can complain about it. I would
- 2:35prefer that you help chip in because liberals
- 2:37marching and waving signs because they are disgruntled
- 2:41with the current situation is better than complete
- 2:44apathy which led to us having this administration
- 2:47is it gonna fix our situation no no one said
- 2:51it would and no one said they were trying to
- 2:52do that nowhere ever was this protest supposed
- 2:56to fix everything it's a demonstration it's a
- 2:58show of solidarity it's a pep rally you gotta
- 3:01have those because you have to show people how
- 3:04many of us are feeling the same way right now
- 3:07Anyway, stateside. There was a little bit of
- 3:09international there. That's why it counts. We
- 3:11are on day 20 of the U .S. government being shut
- 3:14down. I had churros last night to celebrate.
- 3:17Not really celebrating. I just got churros because
- 3:19I like them. It's day 20 of the shutdown. Congress
- 3:22is in gridlock. Nothing seems to be moving. this
- 3:25is probably going to become the next longest
- 3:27shutdown of all time. It's currently in third
- 3:29place for longest shutdown of all time, first
- 3:31place being held by Trump's first term. Essentially,
- 3:34Democrats and Republicans in Congress are not
- 3:36voting for passing a bill to keep the government
- 3:38funded, which is leaving them in deadlock. It's
- 3:41dumb. I would... I would say it's dumb. I think
- 3:44that's how I would describe it. We're getting
- 3:46closer and closer to the point where a government
- 3:48shutdown actually becomes dangerous for the government,
- 3:50which is to say, when people start getting hungry,
- 3:53it's real easy to ignore a government shutdown
- 3:55and all political discussion when you're not
- 3:58hungry. So as this continues to drag on, we will
- 4:01eventually see military and federal families
- 4:03missing paydays. We'll see a strain on food banks,
- 4:06and we'll see food assistance dwindle and eventually
- 4:08snuff out. To try to push out how long it is
- 4:10before people start to really get hungry, Trump
- 4:12has signed a thing to make it so that the DOD
- 4:15is going to move funds around to pay the military,
- 4:17but that's only going to last like a month, and
- 4:20they're probably still going to miss their first
- 4:22payday. So beyond that, we just don't know. It's
- 4:25just going to keep getting wackier. I do want
- 4:27to share how this has personally - affected me
- 4:29please understand that this makes me feel very
- 4:31vulnerable but i was recently going for a hike
- 4:33this past weekend and at the nature center the
- 4:36latrine was closed due to the government shutdown
- 4:39And so I had to become one with nature. Speaking
- 4:41of shit, let's talk about text messages between
- 4:43a bunch of Republicans. Politico recently published
- 4:45a report that revealed a bunch of text messages
- 4:47from a Telegram channel between a bunch of young
- 4:50Republicans. People who are like capital Y, capital
- 4:53R, young Republicans. So this is where it gets
- 4:55messy. And this is where the narrative starts
- 4:57to get real fucked up. So let's be real clear.
- 4:59Young Republican here definitionally means 18
- 5:03to 40. The term young Republicans here is specifically
- 5:06referring to a national organization of young
- 5:10Republicans. And that's the name of it. They
- 5:12mean young as in first half of life, not teenagers.
- 5:17So what this was, was a big trove of texts that
- 5:21had the exact awful shit you would expect. I'm
- 5:25not going to quote it. I'm not going to show
- 5:26it. It's just. racism sexism uh death murder
- 5:30killing jokes uh rape jokes all all of the things
- 5:34essentially the exact kind of humor that you
- 5:36would expect from a 15 year old boy and so when
- 5:39it says young republicans have text messages
- 5:41that have rape jokes in them it's like yeah duh
- 5:43only the yeah duh was actually referring to a
- 5:4735 year old in one case and someone who's currently
- 5:50in this u .s administration And I mean it, like
- 5:53the text, like they said things like, I love
- 5:54Hitler and the things you're not supposed to
- 5:57say, you know, the things that they always want
- 5:58to say, but can't. That's kind of something they
- 6:01would say in a hidden Telegram channel while
- 6:03turning around and yelling at anyone who would
- 6:05insinuate that they're racist. It's so fucking
- 6:08transparent. So this was enough that the actual
- 6:10organization, the National Young Republicans.
- 6:14Folks, they called on these people to step down
- 6:16because they were in like positions of leadership
- 6:17within the organization. It's almost like modern
- 6:20young conservatism preys on young boys and their
- 6:23feeling of being left behind by society for the
- 6:25very real sense of isolation that they're feeling
- 6:28and the lost and stolen future. that truly has
- 6:32happened to them. It's almost like there's a
- 6:34bunch of people out here who feel hopeless and
- 6:35left behind. And the only ones they have to turn
- 6:38to are the worst among us. Among us. Exactly.
- 6:43Our system uplifts the most selfish, horrible
- 6:47people to the highest echelons. Places that were
- 6:51only ever reserved for gods. And so in lieu of
- 6:55a responsible masculine figure, we have Donald
- 6:57Trump. as our president, posting AI videos of
- 7:02him literally shitting on his citizens because
- 7:05that's what he thinks communication should be.
- 7:08Am I offended by that video? Not even remotely.
- 7:12Don't give a shit. Am I upset about the fact
- 7:15that the leader of a country that holds me at
- 7:18gunpoint to pay them taxes is doing that in response
- 7:22to the citizens? Yeah, I feel like that's not
- 7:25a good use. of the leadership position, you know?
- 7:28Anyway, I don't remember what I was saying, but
- 7:30racists. So J .D. Vance decided to defend the
- 7:34racists essentially by saying, oh, well, you
- 7:36know, that's just how kids talk. 18 to 40. So
- 7:40he was trying to do the line of like, oh, it's
- 7:42young Republicans. It's just some teenagers.
- 7:44It's just locker room talk, whatever. That's
- 7:47just how kids are. And honestly, he's not wrong.
- 7:50That is how kids are. And he stopped short of
- 7:54saying. And that's a huge problem for our culture.
- 7:58And we must address it because the normalization
- 8:00of dehumanizing our fellow man is antithetical
- 8:04to the American project. He could have said that,
- 8:06but he didn't. He didn't say that. Instead, he
- 8:10said, talking about gassing Jews is just how
- 8:13kids are. Over in Alaska, there has been some
- 8:16terrible wreckage from a typhoon that hit on
- 8:19October 12th. Remnants of a typhoon hit southwestern
- 8:22Alaska, annihilating villages, primarily those
- 8:25of indigenous people. Folks who have had generations
- 8:29in their towns, towns that don't exist anymore.
- 8:33Floods rolled in and shattered records of flooding
- 8:35by a long shot. Houses were taken off their foundation
- 8:38and were floating far enough to be crashing into
- 8:41each other. Here's an excerpt from alaskapublic
- 8:43.org with a person describing what it was like
- 8:45on the ground. Quote, Carl said that houses were
- 8:48pushed off their foundations and scattered across
- 8:51Kipna. He was in a house with 14 family members
- 8:54during the storm, six of them children, when
- 8:57the four bedroom house started drifting around
- 8:592 a .m. At one point, he yelled to his family
- 9:02to brace when it looked like they were going
- 9:03to strike another house. He estimates his home
- 9:06traveled half a mile before it came to rest.
- 9:08End quote. There's been a flurry of rescue efforts
- 9:11and the National Guard has been deployed. The
- 9:13head of Alaska's National Guard said that this
- 9:15might be the biggest off -road network operation
- 9:18in 45 years for the National Guard. And unfortunately,
- 9:21officials are assessing the damage and predict
- 9:23that it's so severe, it might be more than a
- 9:26year and a half before people can return to their
- 9:29homes. Homes which mostly are gone now. But again,
- 9:32these are largely indigenous towns, and the folks
- 9:34living there have a deep connection to that land.
- 9:37It's their life, it's their livelihood. Even
- 9:39in the face of absolute destruction and disaster,
- 9:43while there were evacuation efforts going on,
- 9:46the people of this town were hesitant to leave.
- 9:48It's all they know. It's all they want. It's
- 9:51just to be home. And I cannot blame them for
- 9:53that. If you want to donate, I've included links
- 9:56in the description of this episode. Elsewhere,
- 9:58there was a cease... Never mind. The ceasefire
- 10:00that Israel and Hamas have mostly agreed to that
- 10:02the U .S. was fostering has all but fallen apart
- 10:05already. I almost had enough time to write a
- 10:08draft. before it fell apart. Essentially, since
- 10:11the start of the ceasefire, Israel has still
- 10:13been killing and bombing people in Gaza and has
- 10:15been escalating it over time. Recently, they
- 10:17did a bunch of airstrikes in the region of Rafah
- 10:19because they claimed that Hamas was shooting
- 10:21at Israeli soldiers there. Hamas says that they
- 10:23can't even get to that region right now. Israel
- 10:25is pointing to the violence at the hands of anti
- 10:28-Hamas militias fighting against Hamas. Civilians
- 10:30and journalists have been getting killed as these
- 10:32militias are roaming around. Israel has already
- 10:34tried pausing aid distribution and claims they're
- 10:37going to get right back to it soon. it's hard
- 10:39to believe their claims because they also said
- 10:42that every single hospital and school and faith
- 10:46center in Gaza was secretly a Hamas operation.
- 10:49Oh, you know what? Throw refugee camps in there
- 10:51too. There is not one intact hospital in Gaza.
- 10:55They have all been destroyed or damaged by Israeli
- 10:58strikes. And I wish it wasn't this overtly evil,
- 11:00but we have confirmation from Israeli media that
- 11:03Israel has been arming the militias that they
- 11:06are saying. are going against Hamas and causing
- 11:09a bunch of violence in the area. Netanyahu himself
- 11:11and his cabinet secretly approved the distribution
- 11:13of weapons to militias to send into Gaza that
- 11:17they then used as an excuse to continue attacking
- 11:20Gaza. I don't think any reasonable person really
- 11:23expected this to be a ceasefire that actually
- 11:25held. I had some hope purely because I've seen
- 11:30so much. and I just want it to end. I do not
- 11:34like the terms of this ceasefire, and I never
- 11:36really thought it was going to hold. I didn't
- 11:38think it was a good one. I really wish that killing
- 11:40would end. Speaking of killing, Russia and Ukraine.
- 11:43Fuck. Let's go through this quick. Russia and
- 11:45Ukraine, it's still going on. It's still ramping
- 11:48up. Russia has been amping up their drone strikes
- 11:50and missile strikes on cities in Ukraine. And
- 11:53in response, Ukraine has been striking deeper
- 11:55and deeper into Russia's mainland. There are
- 11:57reports that Ukraine has hit enough oil refineries
- 11:59in Russia to have reduced their oil refinery
- 12:01capacity by like 20%. Zelensky went to Trump
- 12:05to ask for Tomahawk missiles, which if given
- 12:08them, that would severely change the balance
- 12:10of power. And Trump thought about it and then
- 12:12said no, and then also said, stop fighting and
- 12:15just use the current battle lines as the map,
- 12:18which is what Putin wants to do. What a surprise.
- 12:20But anyway, France is having a time of it. It's
- 12:23been like a year and a half of just absolute
- 12:25chaos in the French government. Last summer,
- 12:28the far right in France won a bunch of seats
- 12:30in parliament, more than people had expected.
- 12:32And in response to that, the current president
- 12:35of France, Macron, he was like, let's try that
- 12:38again. And he called it a snap election. Essentially,
- 12:41that was just like, hey, let's do a do -over.
- 12:43And the far right got more seats. from the two
- 12:46over since then macron's been doing everything
- 12:48he can to try to keep the government from just
- 12:50falling apart but there's not enough people in
- 12:53any group to form a coalition that lasts and
- 12:56so there's just been like a rotating door of
- 12:57prime ministers and recently another one came
- 13:01and went there's been protest after protest after
- 13:03protest mass mobilizations just shutting france
- 13:07down this is what happens when you have strong
- 13:09labor force by the way these were like union
- 13:11planned protests uh join the joining union joining
- 13:15union there were also just like civilian protests
- 13:17like there was really impressive other protests
- 13:19going on beyond just just the organized union
- 13:22ones but still the people in france are protesting
- 13:24government cuts and an increase in the retirement
- 13:27age shit like that they're basically saying like
- 13:29hey why is our life getting materially worse
- 13:32under your leadership huh side note uh here's
- 13:36a really good idea leadership of a country that
- 13:41improves things i got a million of these anyway
- 13:45yeah it's just kind of a mess in france there's
- 13:48just protest after protest after protest prime
- 13:51minister after prime minister after prime minister
- 13:53uh and the far right coalition's leader was found
- 13:56guilty of embezzlement and isn't allowed to run
- 13:57for office for five years so they're really having
- 14:00a time of it that's all i can really say technology
- 14:03bad technology let's talk about sora OpenAI recently
- 14:07launched an app called Sora, and you probably
- 14:09have already heard about it, but it is an AI
- 14:11TikTok app. Essentially, it is a endless scrolling
- 14:16feed of AI -generated videos, and all that you
- 14:19do is generate AI -generated videos and then
- 14:22put them into a feed. So it's a feed of literally
- 14:25just slop. And so in classic OpenAI fashion,
- 14:28they didn't know, or more likely didn't care,
- 14:30what was going to happen when this app hit the
- 14:32general public. And it did, and wouldn't you
- 14:35know it, copyright infringement abuse you can
- 14:38generate video of other people some people would
- 14:43busted brains can opt in to being put into these
- 14:46videos. Sam Altman himself is one of these opt
- 14:49-ins, and people have already generated CCTV
- 14:52footage of him shoplifting. Like, it's so blatantly
- 14:56stupid. Now, OpenAI probably thinks they can
- 14:58get away with basically anything forever, and
- 15:01they might be right, but this move pissed off
- 15:04content lawyers from Hollywood to Japan. Hollywood's
- 15:07like, hey, why are you able to generate footage
- 15:10of... our copyrighted material. In Japan, they're
- 15:13like, why the fuck can people generate, like,
- 15:15entire anime sequences from our material? Like,
- 15:19this is our cultural export. You're trying to
- 15:21claim that you have divine right to train some
- 15:24kind of exploitation machine with it? And so
- 15:27it didn't take long to get stuff like SpongeBob
- 15:29in a Nazi costume and shit like that. And OpenAI
- 15:33was like, oh, whoa, whoops. Their original plan
- 15:35to handle copyright was opt out. If you have
- 15:38a copyright on something and someone somewhere
- 15:40made a video, you can apply to opt out of having
- 15:44that content be usable. It's insane. This is
- 15:47where we are. And this is why I'm basically always
- 15:49saying, stop showing abject deference to tech
- 15:53bros. This is dumb. We don't need to live like
- 15:56this. Copyright law is a mess, an intellectual
- 15:58property. It's important in some ways and abused
- 16:01in many ways. But I'm always here if somebody
- 16:04wants to sue Sam Altman. Let's talk about depression.
- 16:07I have it. Scientists at McGill University have
- 16:10isolated brain cells that they believe are affected
- 16:12by people with depression. We've known for a
- 16:14long time that depression is physiological. Depression's
- 16:17not just you're sad a lot. Depression's your
- 16:19body doesn't have the right chemical balance
- 16:22to make it so that your brain doesn't want to
- 16:24just end. Trust me, I didn't want to have it
- 16:28like that. I didn't mean to. Anyway, we've known
- 16:31that it's physiological in nature, but we don't
- 16:32have a lot of insight into the specifics of what
- 16:35brain cells are doing what differently with people
- 16:37with depression versus people without. So these
- 16:39science boys took a hundred cadavers. Science
- 16:42boys do the coolest thing. Anyway, the science
- 16:44boys took a hundred cadavers and looked at their
- 16:46brains. About 40 of them did not have depression
- 16:48and 60 of them did. They were able to isolate
- 16:51two different types of cells that had notable
- 16:53difference that were consistent between the cadavers.
- 16:56I'm not going to pronounce them because I don't
- 16:58want to sound dumb. And I did. look it up but
- 17:01what does this actually mean unfortunately it
- 17:02doesn't mean a ton but it does mean that we're
- 17:05making progress we don't know what we don't know
- 17:08correlation is not causation so they can't just
- 17:10say well we now know how depression happens because
- 17:13of these two brain cell types you know next steps
- 17:16would look like figuring out if there's a before
- 17:18and after death difference with these brain cells
- 17:21and learning more about if this is a result of
- 17:25depression or a cause of depression but it's
- 17:28movement in a of potentially having a better
- 17:31understanding of mental illness and more ways
- 17:33to counteract it so that hopefully someday I'll
- 17:36be able to stop taking the pills that make me
- 17:39not want to go dark. Lightning round. There was
- 17:42a guy who worked in the US Department of Energy
- 17:44and he recently lost his security clearance after
- 17:47his computer tried to upload about 200 ,000 images
- 17:51of porn. to a backup over the government network.
- 17:54It was reportedly his lifelong collection. For
- 17:57the first time in 20 years, the U .S. passport
- 17:59has slipped out of the world's top 10 most valuable
- 18:02passports. We were number one a decade ago. I
- 18:05wonder what happened over the past decade. OpenAI,
- 18:08again showing their excellent judgment, announced
- 18:10that they will soon be allowing ChatGPT to again
- 18:13act like your friend, boyfriend, therapist, stuff
- 18:16like that, including sexting. This is a great
- 18:19idea and very good. And finally for today, a
- 18:21guy in Indiana found a 4 ,270 -year -old human
- 18:25skull. Like, yeah, we knew people were there
- 18:29then, but that's an old skull. Like, very old.
- 18:33I wonder whose it was. Wasn't mine. I don't think.
- 18:38Thank you so much for listening to today's episode
- 18:40of Stuff Keeps Happening. Head to skh .news for
- 18:43sources, bonus content, and a map to where I
- 18:46hid the other 4 ,270 -year -old skull. My name
- 18:50is Endeavorance. We'll talk again soon. Take
- 18:52care and be well.
