- 1:00Speaker 1: Let me tell you I have been having a whole
- 1:02Speaker 1: lot of fun this week because, man, the feedback from
- 1:06Speaker 1: Monday's Day's episode takes me over the moon. Not to
- 1:10Speaker 1: mention that this week Hurdle celebrated a massive, massive milestone
- 1:15Speaker 1: which wouldn't have been possible without each and every single
- 1:19Speaker 1: one of you, and that is one million lessens.
- 1:24Speaker 2: If I had an applause machine, I would be using
- 1:26Speaker 2: that right now.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Anyway, this week, I am here to give you the
- 1:30Speaker 1: pep talk that maybe you've been looking for I have
- 1:34Speaker 1: recorded about being on the injured list before, but I
- 1:37Speaker 1: feel like, more than ever, so many of you are
- 1:41Speaker 1: reaching out to me asking about how to cope when
- 1:44Speaker 1: you're not feeling one hundred percent, And today I've got
- 1:47Speaker 1: a pep talk for you. It makes sense, really, if
- 1:50Speaker 1: you think about it. You know that so many people
- 1:53Speaker 1: are so worried about being injured right now, maybe more
- 1:57Speaker 1: so than usual. You see before, when they didn't involve
- 2:00Speaker 1: social distancing or masks in public, or twenty four hours
- 2:04Speaker 1: spent within a five hundred square foot box.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Maybe I'm just speaking from.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Personal experience, it was perhaps a little bit easier to
- 2:12Speaker 1: find ways to cope with injury. Not that it didn't
- 2:16Speaker 1: make the injury itself suck less, but when you're able
- 2:19Speaker 1: to go out with friends for dinner, or leisurely make
- 2:22Speaker 1: your way home from the office, stopping in stores as detours,
- 2:26Speaker 1: or anything that just didn't have you sitting around the
- 2:29Speaker 1: house for hours on end with your thoughts, those things
- 2:32Speaker 1: all made it seem less overwhelming. But here we are
- 2:36Speaker 1: looking everywhere and anywhere for ways to deal with that
- 2:40Speaker 1: anxious feeling, that's stuck feeling, and for so many of us,
- 2:45Speaker 1: that outlet is often activity, and when you're injured, well
- 2:50Speaker 1: it's tough.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Trust me. I know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: As I mentioned in last week's Five Minute Friday, I
- 2:56Speaker 1: am dealing personally with some unknown stuff in my.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Left tip region. I don't know exactly what is causing
- 3:04Speaker 2: me this pain.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It could be something like a versiitis or perhaps something
- 3:08Speaker 1: with my SI joint, which sounds fancy, but I do
- 3:11Speaker 1: know this. I am not running right now, and again,
- 3:15Speaker 1: when running is your coping mechanism for all things that
- 3:18Speaker 1: feel uncomfortable or hard, it is hard to figure out
- 3:21Speaker 1: how to better handle uncomfortable and hard things. You know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: we can draw a lot of comparisons between physical injury
- 3:29Speaker 1: and emotional wounds. Right physical and emotional pain, they hurt
- 3:33Speaker 1: in different ways, and many of us are for sure
- 3:37Speaker 1: experiencing one of those at least right now. Both prevent
- 3:42Speaker 1: us from going about as we once did, and oftentimes
- 3:46Speaker 1: they leave us wanting more, and of course both can
- 3:49Speaker 1: also have us changing our workout habits. I know I
- 3:53Speaker 1: have gone through some tough stuff in my personal life
- 3:57Speaker 1: that has made it hard to get out of this,
- 4:00Speaker 1: just like these days, waking up naturally at six point
- 4:04Speaker 1: fifty two and asking myself, if I'm not running, what's
- 4:08Speaker 1: the rush to go anywhere? But here's the thing, there's hope,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and today I am here to do you a solid
- 4:17Speaker 1: I am here to be your hype man, your hype willman.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Sometimes a little bit of motivation can help you turn
- 4:26Speaker 1: the corner, you know, And I may not have all
- 4:29Speaker 1: of the answers you're looking for, but I can encourage
- 4:32Speaker 1: you to find them and brace change and show up
- 4:35Speaker 1: again as always.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Hit me up on social media.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle Podcasts at Emily a Body on Instagram,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Twitter and Facebook.
- 4:45Speaker 2: If you have a Hurdle moment of your own to share.
- 4:48Speaker 1: If this one really hits home, I'd love to hear
- 4:51Speaker 1: from you. Shoot me an email over at Emily at
- 4:54Speaker 1: hurdle dot us. And as soon as you are done
- 4:57Speaker 1: listening to this, if you haven't done so already, I
- 5:01Speaker 1: would be elated if you'd head on over to the
- 5:03Speaker 1: iTunes store, rate and review the podcast and make sure
- 5:08Speaker 1: that you're subscribed.
- 5:09Speaker 2: With that, let's get to heartline.
- 5:22Speaker 1: There are things we're gonna go through and they're not
- 5:25Speaker 1: gonna be easy. This injury, it's one of those things
- 5:31Speaker 1: like a bad first kiss or missing your subway stop.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It's anything but desirable. First and foremost, I'm gonna let
- 5:40Speaker 1: you in on something that maybe you've forgotten in all
- 5:44Speaker 1: of this chaos. You have a lot to offer beyond
- 5:49Speaker 1: the thing that your injury is preventing you in doing.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I know, I know some days it doesn't feel like that.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And let me tell you the things I would do
- 6:01Speaker 1: to tackle track repeats in this very moment, to sprint
- 6:05Speaker 1: all out and be totally breathless. But for just a second,
- 6:10Speaker 1: think about all the great things you bring to the table.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm sure you got a great smile, a warm heart, compassion,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and hey, perhaps a great sense of humor. If you
- 6:23Speaker 1: close your eyes in this very moment and pretend that
- 6:26Speaker 1: nothing is quote unquote wrong with your body, all of
- 6:30Speaker 1: those things, those positive attributes that make you, they're still there.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So let's start with remembering that.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I'm also gonna remind you, even though you may not
- 6:42Speaker 1: want to hear it, there is a reason that setbacks happen.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Oftentimes we want to place blame, complain, We might not
- 6:51Speaker 1: choose to see the bright side. But for just a moment,
- 6:56Speaker 1: what if I reframed this particular injury as an opportunit tunity.
- 7:01Speaker 1: What if perhaps slowing down was something that your body
- 7:04Speaker 1: has been wanting for quite some time. As I record
- 7:08Speaker 1: this in the age of coronavirus, there's a lot of
- 7:11Speaker 1: science that's coming out about how right now, the last
- 7:15Speaker 1: thing our bodies really need is loads of extra strain.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Right now, we just need to do the things that
- 7:22Speaker 1: make us feel good, not the things that have us
- 7:26Speaker 1: headed back to bed because we are so sore we
- 7:28Speaker 1: can't move a single centimeter.
- 7:32Speaker 2: So back to opportunity.
- 7:34Speaker 1: When you are not focused on the thing that you'd
- 7:36Speaker 1: be doing if everything was quote unquote fine, what other
- 7:40Speaker 1: things can you take on now that you're not giving
- 7:43Speaker 1: your time elsewhere? Forget the injury for a moment, the setback,
- 7:49Speaker 1: think about what else it is? What else do you
- 7:52Speaker 1: want to do? Perhaps there's been something that you've been
- 7:55Speaker 1: avoiding that you need to do. If I had to
- 7:58Speaker 1: estimate on average perk, I'd spend about seven hours running
- 8:04Speaker 1: seven hours That is almost an entire work day. Please,
- 8:09Speaker 1: who am I giving? Some days I do not even
- 8:12Speaker 1: work for seven hours. Okay, So if you decide that
- 8:16Speaker 1: you want to spend your time equivalent still moving, which
- 8:21Speaker 1: I'm not personally. You can ask yourself, what is it
- 8:24Speaker 1: that I can do that makes me better with this time?
- 8:28Speaker 1: For me, that's stability work, single like deadlifts and glop
- 8:33Speaker 1: bridges and core work and planks. It's so many of
- 8:37Speaker 1: the things that feel otherwise tedious, but right now I
- 8:41Speaker 1: know that they are a lifeline. But let's for a
- 8:44Speaker 1: second think beyond movement. Not that I'm saying that your
- 8:48Speaker 1: injury should stop you from moving all together. There is
- 8:51Speaker 1: always some way to move, even if it isn't the
- 8:54Speaker 1: way that you used to.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But what if you.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Took all of that time and started that thing you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: you know exactly the thing that I'm talking about, the
- 9:04Speaker 1: thing that you've been thinking about forever, the.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Thing that you kept making excuses for.
- 9:11Speaker 1: What if now this injury it's happening to give you
- 9:14Speaker 1: the push that you need to show up for yourself again.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I know you might not want to hear it, but
- 9:21Speaker 1: I am here to tell it to you anyway.
- 9:24Speaker 2: You are great, You are capable. I know it's frustrating.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I've been there so many times that I am there
- 9:34Speaker 1: right now, But you have conquered so many hurdles before this,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and you will conquer this. You just have to start
- 9:44Speaker 1: by believing that you can. Thinking positive instead of negative,
- 9:49Speaker 1: being optimistic instead of hopeless. Hope is a beautiful thing
- 9:55Speaker 1: and once you choose it, the sky is the limit.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I hope for you is that you embrace the now,
- 10:04Speaker 1: embrace this injury and learn from it. Open yourself up
- 10:09Speaker 1: to the possibility that you can be better. You will
- 10:14Speaker 1: be better. You are bigger than this. You are bigger
- 10:18Speaker 1: than this. Dwell in possibility instead of fear, and you
- 10:23Speaker 1: just might catch a necessary glimpse of your own potential.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Keep your chin up and as always, I am here
- 10:32Speaker 1: for you. This hurdle, the next hurdle, and all the
- 10:37Speaker 1: hurdles to come at Hurdle Podcast at Emily Abadi Another
- 10:42Speaker 1: hurdle soon to be conquered.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time. He
