- 0:07The Kansas City Athletics faced the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium for a Friday night game on September 30th, 1966.
- 0:15The A's entered the game at the bottom of the AL West with a 71-86 record. The Tigers were a team on the rise with 88 wins.
- 0:23The full broadcast of this game has been lost, but the exciting innings from the bottom of the 5th through the 8th are presented today from the Kansas City KMCO broadcast featuring announcers Monty Moore and Lynn Ferris.
- 0:35Well, the Oregon here in Tiger Stadium sending a birthday salute along to Frank Scaff. It's his birthday tonight and also that of Johnny Pondman.
- 0:42It's not Monty Moore's birthday, but he's sure ready to go.
- 0:46I'd celebrate if the A's could get them to win this game. Here's Mickey Stanley. Had a single his first time up in the ball game. Right-handed batter. Here's the bitch.
- 0:56It's a called strike from Odom who's throwing that ball hard here again tonight. Odom has walked one and struck out three.
- 1:02Wilson hasn't walked anybody, and that's pretty well per usual with him. He's struck out seven.
- 1:07A nothing-nothing game. The A's and the Tigers, a big ball game for both clubs. Financially a big game for the Tigers.
- 1:14Here's the 0-1 count. Curve ball swung and popped foul behind the plate. No balls, two strikes.
- 1:23The Tigers do not have a 300-hitter on the ball club. Al Keline leads with a 290 average. Stanley is right behind with 288. Stanley's played in only 91 games.
- 1:33They expect that he might be their regular center fielder all next year.
- 1:38The ball's two strikes. Odom fires way outside with a waste ball. One and two. That one actually knocked the mid off Bill Roof's hand.
- 1:48The ball stayed in the mid and was separated from Roof about two feet off to his right.
- 1:54Boy, this is the kind of a night a guy that throws as hard as Odom can make a catcher's hand puff up pretty big before it's all over. It's really cold here.
- 2:03Here's the one and two bet. Curve ball pops up from the infield. Ed Charles and Phil Roof coming in. They're calling Charles in on the play and Ed makes the catch right in front of Roof.
- 2:15So there's one away here in the fifth inning of the ball game. Kansas City nothing, Detroit nothing.
- 2:21Here's Bill Frihan, Tiger catcher, who singles in the second inning.
- 2:27The Tigers have had three hits, all singles.
- 2:36Bill Frihan catching in his 134th game of the year.
- 2:43Here's the line by Odom, the pick on the way. Foul upstairs. Strike one.
- 2:49In Odom's last three starts, he has pitched two shutouts. He shut out Cleveland by a score of three to nothing.
- 2:57He then lost the shutout to Washington, giving up a run in the last half of the ninth inning. The score of that game won nothing.
- 3:03Then he came right back in his next start and beat Cleveland again, shutting them out two to nothing.
- 3:08Here's the O1 pitch. Stinker's a little low. One ball and one strike.
- 3:17Odom has given up only two runs in his last four starts.
- 3:22And he has gone at least seven and two-thirds innings in each of the last four starts.
- 3:29Here's the one-on-one pitch. A little high on inside, ball two.
- 3:39With as many days off as the Athletics have had, not having played since last Sunday,
- 3:45you can see the confidence manager Alvin Dark has in this youngster.
- 3:49Because he could have chosen anybody on the pitching staff, they're all rested for a big game.
- 3:53Here's the 2-1 pitch. High. Ball three.
- 3:57So the Cowlitz three balls and one strike to freehand, with one out here in the fifth inning of a scoreless game.
- 4:06To indicate how big a game Alvin Dark feels it is, he has his big right-hander Jim Nash in the bullpen tonight.
- 4:13In case Odom might need some help, here's a 3-1 pitch. Watch out, that's out of play.
- 4:20So the Cowlitz full of three balls and two strikes.
- 4:23If Nash does not have to get up and warm up tonight or get into the game, he will be the starting pitcher here tomorrow.
- 4:32If he does get into the game, and for a brief period of time, he would pitch on Sunday as the starter.
- 4:41That's a 3-2 pitch to freehand. Inside he walked in.
- 4:46Freehand is on, that's the second walk issued by Odom tonight.
- 4:51And the batter is Earl Wilson, the Tiger pitcher.
- 4:57Wilson, one of the best hitting pitchers in all of baseball, has hit seven home runs this year.
- 5:05And that's more than some of the Tiger regulars. For instance, Gates Brown and Outfielder has hit only seven home runs, and he's played in 86 games.
- 5:14Wilson has played in a total of 42 games, counting pitch hit appearances.
- 5:21Mickey Stanley and Outfielder has played in 91 games and has hit only three homers.
- 5:26McFarlane the catcher has hit only five homers.
- 5:29But Wilson is dangerous. Here's the wind of pitch.
- 5:32The call strikes. No balls and a strike.
- 5:42Detroit as a team has pounded 176 homers.
- 5:46Compare that with 64 of the athletics of it this year as a team.
- 5:52Odom's pitch, Wilson's swing pops it up, short center field.
- 5:55Monday coming in, Rick's calling everybody else off, and he takes care of it.
- 6:00There are two down.
- 6:03That's what you call sawing off a bat in a guy's hand.
- 6:05Odom hit Wilson right on the fist and broke a bat.
- 6:10As Wilson comes back trotting behind home plate, he's grinning a little bit.
- 6:16That's what you call bees in the bat on a night like this.
- 6:21Boy, you can really sting your hands when one hits you on the fist.
- 6:25Two down, top of the batting order now. Here's Jake Wood, right-handed batting, second baseman.
- 6:31Pitch, strike call to Wood. He was taking all the way.
- 6:35The Tigers nothing, the Athletics nothing. Last half of the fifth inning.
- 6:43Both clubs have had opportunities.
- 6:45The A's had runners at second and third, but their runners were there with two down.
- 6:520-1 pitch. In the dirt, a nice pick up by catcher Phil Rueck.
- 6:56One ball, one strike.
- 6:59The Tigers had runners at first and third with one out in the second inning.
- 7:08A ball and a strike they got.
- 7:18Runner leaps at first base. Odom gives him a look, throws to the plate, sinks off too much again.
- 7:22Ball two.
- 7:26For the Athletics, Phil Rueck is behind the plate.
- 7:29Ed Charles back in the lineup at third tonight. Campanier is at shortstop.
- 7:32Green at second. And Danny Kader at first.
- 7:35The A's outfield has Jim Gosger in left, Rick Munday in center, and Mike Hirschberger in right.
- 7:43And pitching for Kansas City.
- 7:46Young right-hander John Lee Blue Moon Odom, who won five and lost five so far,
- 7:51throw to first back in time is freehand.
- 8:01Two and one count.
- 8:04Another throw to first, and that ball gets away from the first baseman Kader,
- 8:07but it hit the umpire, red clarity in the leg,
- 8:09and stayed close enough to first that Kader was able to pick it up with no advance being made.
- 8:16So the A's got a break.
- 8:19When the ball went to the right of the A's first baseman Danny Kader and hit the umpire,
- 8:23red clarity in the leg.
- 8:26Here's Odom, two-one pick, swinging a foul down by Jake Wood. It's two and two now.
- 8:34The American League champion Ball of the Orioles were beaten in the first game
- 8:37of their double-hunter tonight with Minnesota.
- 8:39They have come up with two runs in the sixth inning of the second game.
- 8:42The Twins are leading in that one five to two.
- 8:45Harmon Killibrews hammered a couple of home runs tonight,
- 8:47for Minnesota is 38th and 39th of the year.
- 8:52A two-two pitch to Jake Wood, sidearm fastball is fouled out.
- 8:57It's the first time Odom has gone that far down sidearm tonight.
- 9:01He really dropped down.
- 9:09Two balls, two strikes, two down and one on.
- 9:12Last half of the fifth inning of a five-ball game being played in Tigers Stadium, Detroit.
- 9:18Odom's pitch, swing and a half-ouncer towards third.
- 9:20Ed Charles is going to have a hard time throwing his man out.
- 9:22He flagged it down, throws the first two late.
- 9:27Charles had to wait on that high bouncer to come down.
- 9:30And that Jake Wood can really run.
- 9:32Charles fielded the ball, made a high throw to first base with not too much on it.
- 9:36And Wood is safe with a hit.
- 9:38The Tigers are set up now with runners at first and second, two down.
- 9:42And here is Dick McCallum.
- 9:51McCallum having a good year for the Tigers again, hitting 273,
- 9:54with 22 home runs, eight triples, 15 doubles.
- 10:03The lead runner, Bill Frehand.
- 10:06The trailing runner at first is Jake Wood.
- 10:11McCallum shortens up on the bat a little bit.
- 10:13Here's the pitch, fastball, a strike gets called.
- 10:22Norm Cash is on deck.
- 10:28The big man of great concern right now is at the plate, and that's Dick McCallum.
- 10:37One strike counts.
- 10:41Odom fires.
- 10:42Strike two, it's called, that fastball hits the knee.
- 10:47No balls, two strikes.
- 10:51That's pretty much the perfect pitch.
- 10:53It's a tough one for anybody to handle.
- 10:56But McCallum is looking for a pitch he can pull.
- 11:050-2 count, Odom ahead of him, checks the runner, fires to the plate,
- 11:08sinker again, this time little outside, ball one, one and two.
- 11:14Close enough that with two strikes on him, many batters will go for that pitch.
- 11:20A score from the National League headliner tonight, the Dodgers one and the Philadelphia Phillies two.
- 11:25They're playing at Philadelphia in the seventh inning.
- 11:33Odom's one-two pitch to McCallum in the dirt, ball two.
- 11:42So McCallum has hung on patiently with two strikes on him and worked the count to two balls and two strikes.
- 11:54Bill Freehand, the runner at second base.
- 11:57Jake Wood at first, no score in the game.
- 12:00Last half of the fifth inning.
- 12:01Good to have you with us tonight on the A's Radio Network.
- 12:05Odom whips the pitch to the plate, McCallum takes ball three, it's low again.
- 12:11So McCallum has three balls and two strikes, and with two down, that means the runners will be moving.
- 12:17So any kind of an extra base hit here could give the Tigers two runs because Wood can really run.
- 12:23And he'll be breaking with nobody holding against him at first base.
- 12:31A's manager Alvin Dark has just sent a series of signs out to the catcher, Bill Roof, and he'll relay them to Odom.
- 12:38There go the runners, here's the pitch. Fastball line to right center field, one run is coming in to score.
- 12:43Cuts the ball off in right center. Here comes Wood by the score, now they're getting the hole up, but he's got to stop at third.
- 12:49A great throw by Rick Munday.
- 12:52The eight center field are raised in the right center field.
- 12:55Cuts that ball off, it was headed for the fence.
- 12:58McCallum ends up in second.
- 13:00The Tigers get a run and the batter is Norm Cash.
- 13:08Boy, that McCallum has killed Kansas City Fitching as long as he's been in the American League.
- 13:14And he just unloaded a big one.
- 13:17Boy, what a play by that Munday in right center field.
- 13:24Now with first base open, Al Kaelin is the next scheduled batter.
- 13:29Are these going to pitch to Norm Cash here or not?
- 13:34Roof is squatting down behind home plate.
- 13:37Odom goes to the line. Here's the pitch. Cash takes it. It goes in the dirt. A great stop by Roof saves the run.
- 13:51Frank Scaff, the Tiger manager, is also the third base coach.
- 13:56He had been waving wood on from the time the ball was hit.
- 14:01Of course, the runner from second knew he was going to go, so Scaff immediately picked up his runner at first base and started giving him the go sign.
- 14:08Not realizing Munday could make a pick up as he did in right center field and a throw to the infield.
- 14:13Here's the one and oh pitch. There's a drive to right, not hitting too hard.
- 14:17Hirschberger should get it in front of the fence. He's got it.
- 14:23Blue Moon Odom hit Norm Cash right on the fifth with one. That ball didn't sound too good when it left the bat.
- 14:29And Hirschberger was able to make a catch right in front of the fence in right field.
- 14:33So Odom here in the fifth inning sees one run come across the plate. Two hits. Two men left off.
- 14:40After five full innings of play, the score, Detroit 1, Kansas City nothing.
- 14:46Say, I have a question for you. Wonder if you've been able to visit baseball's Hall of Fame, Cooper Town, New York.
- 14:52A shrine for the great names in baseball. Rogers Hornsby, Joe DiMaggio, Dizzy Dean, Luke Abling, Gabby Hartner, many others.
- 15:00Well, there's still another name that is one respect among baseball fans. Friendly Bob Adams.
- 15:05You're a loaned by phone specialist with a GFC loan company.
- 15:08Bob has built his reputation and GFC on service to people who need loans of $25,000 to $2,000.
- 15:15Bob knows many times you run short of cash, doctor bills, car payments, other expenses.
- 15:20You call Bob and the GFC team, you get the money you need without an hour wasted.
- 15:25Call them tonight. Grand 1, 5373.
- 15:29Later on, you can pick up the money and sign for it at the GFC office near a Jew.
- 15:33Well, then the Kansas City area, 3940 Main, corner of Westport and Main, 3129, 12 Parkway.
- 15:39Call tonight. Grand 1, 5373. GFC loan company.
- 15:50Now as we go to the second inning of the ball game, the Athletics have got to play catch-up ball against Earl Wilson,
- 15:56a man who has beaten Kansas City 13 times and lost to them only four in his big league career.
- 16:02The A's have had only three singles. The Tigers now have had a total of five hits in the game.
- 16:14Beckman being by McCollum with the runners moving on a 3-2 pitch.
- 16:19In the fifth inning, Odom had gotten him no balls, two strikes.
- 16:24The A's started off now with Kampi Kampanaris, the shortstop.
- 16:28He's the leadoff batter for the A's and has been most of the season.
- 16:33Kampi hitting 266. He's hit safely in the last five games in a row, but only one hit a game.
- 16:38Here's the bench. Strike, it's called from Wilson. He has not walked a batter.
- 16:43The closest he came was on a 3-1 count to Kampanaris to start the game.
- 16:47He rallied from that 3-1 count to throw two strikes by Kampi and struck him out.
- 16:54Now the big right-hander fires again. Kampanaris takes it outside, hits one ball, one strike.
- 17:03Kampanaris with 49 stolen bases to his credit had a fantastic month of September stealing bases.
- 17:10Now the one-on-one. There's a drive to center. Base hit for Kampanaris.
- 17:14His hitting streak now goes to six in a row and the A's have the potential tying run on.
- 17:19And the man they'd rather have on in this situation than any other man they have on the roster.
- 17:26Coming up behind him is Mike Hershberger, a good hit and run man.
- 17:30Mike batting 251 for the year. He's 0-2 in this game against Wilson.
- 17:35The Tigers will shorten up their infielders just a bit now with Hershberger there.
- 17:41McCullough and Wood will cheat just a bit towards the middle of the diamond to protect from the double play.
- 17:54Here's a pitch. It's a little low, ball one. Kampanaris got a big lead off first base but did not go.
- 18:02Bill Freehand is a good throwing catcher.
- 18:10Wilson down to the stretch again. Kampanaris gets a lead.
- 18:14Wilson looks at him a long time. Bobbs his head a couple of times. There goes Kampy. He's a pitch. Swung on and fouled down.
- 18:20Hershberger fouled it off with Kampanaris going.
- 18:24Mike seemed to be trying to hit that ball through that big hole on the right side of the infield.
- 18:30With the first baseman holding Kampanaris and the second baseman over towards second for the double play.
- 18:36They've really got a big hole on the right side of the infield because with Kampy breaking, second baseman had gone over to cover second that time and he had a full 90 feet to shoot through.
- 18:47A ball and a strike. There goes Kampy again. A pitch is swung on, bounced to the left side of the infield.
- 18:52Third baseman has got it. Wood throws the first Kampanaris round. Second goes to third.
- 18:56He slides in there and he's out at third base. On the throw to Dick McCullough.
- 19:00Now Kampanaris and McCullough are in a fight, a fist fight going on with Kampanaris and McCullough. Everybody out of folks, I got that under the field.
- 19:08Kampanaris and McCullough really went at it. Ed Turrows and Earl Wilson are squared away.
- 19:15Just off to the right a little bit. Kampanaris I believe is hurting the play.
- 19:20We have some 70 ball players out on the field right now.
- 19:25There are no arms or fists being swung but believe me there were some swung by Kampanaris and McCullough.
- 19:34Kampanaris tried to go all the way from first to third on a ground out to the third baseman word.
- 19:40Kampy slid in the third base and he slid hard. McCullough got up slugging Kampanaris and Kampy went after him.
- 19:47And Kampanaris now is limping off the field and he's limping pretty badly. He may be through for the night.
- 19:53You think these guys are not playing this one as if everything depended on it?
- 20:02The umpire Bob Stewart behind all plates is now arguing with Alvin Dark about something.
- 20:11I don't know what it's about but Alvin has really got his dander up.
- 20:14They're out in the middle of the infield. Kampanaris is limping back to the dugout.
- 20:19Well then that one emptied the benches in the dugout and in the bullpen.
- 20:24The second one we've seen this year but the first one was with the Red Sox when Kanigli Arrows started out to the mound after being challenged by Lou Krause but he never went out there.
- 20:35He thought more wisely of it. Jim Nash led the charge that night was the first to go to Krause's side but no punches were thrown.
- 20:44There were some good ones here and you never saw so many guys out there.
- 20:52They may have thrown Kampanaris out of the game. I don't know. Alvin Dark is appealing to all the umpires out there.
- 20:58He went over to talk with Luke Affling after his big argument with Bob Stewart and now Stewart is going out to talk again.
- 21:06Marty Springsteen at the third base umpire who called the play at third base is now in an argument with Alvin Dark.
- 21:13Kampanaris trying to go from first to third was cut down on a perfect throw from Norm Cash to Dick McCullough.
- 21:20Now Kampy slid in hard to McCullough but this is no Sunday School League and McCullough got up and kneed Kampanaris first.
- 21:29While Kampy was down McCullough jumped out on him with his knee first. Then Kampy got up and went after him.
- 21:36I don't know what's going on but the way Alvin Dark is arguing I've got to assume that something against Kansas City has happened here.
- 21:44I'll tell you Alvin's mad. After talking to Springsteen and Bob Stewart he went over to check with Luke Affling and since Luke was so close to third base in the coaches box
- 21:56I'm sure he wanted to get his version of who started it. And I would have to guess that after getting that
- 22:02Luke probably reporting that Kampy was kneed has made our skipper all of war furious.
- 22:10He's really in it with Stewart at home plate. Now pointing down towards third base.
- 22:19Boy Charles came very close to getting into it with Wilson. Wilson acted as the interceptor to keep Charles.
- 22:26Ed was trying to get to Kampanaris' A. Kampy had gotten either knocked down or fallen down off balance.
- 22:33And he was in a bad situation on the ground with several Tigers close to him where they really could have gotten to the A's little guy.
- 22:41And that's the mark of the old pro. Charles was trying to get to Kampy's side and Wilson cut in and prevented Charles from it.
- 22:48And Ed wasn't...he was all set to go at it with Wilson.
- 22:54Oh there's some guys on Wilson in our dugout right now. He just tried to stare down somebody in our dugout.
- 23:02Well we still as of this moment have to assume that Kampanaris was either thrown out or was hurt badly enough
- 23:08because Ozzie Shavarria, utility infielder, is going down to the dugout in the bullpen.
- 23:14Jim Gosger's the batter with two down here in the sixth inning. The Tigers leading 1-0 in a hotly contested battle.
- 23:19Here's the bitch. Gosger takes high of all one. Mike Hirschberger just slammed his glove down in the dugout as hard as he could slam it.
- 23:29We've got a mad bunch of Kelly Green and Gold suited Kansas City A's fans.
- 23:35Alright here's the 1-0 bitch.
- 23:37There's a drive to the right center field. We've got a tight ball game. Way back, way back. It hit the upper deck.
- 23:43Gosger ties it up with a home run.
- 23:53Jim Gosger just pounded one off the roof of Tiger Stadium in right field.
- 23:59And now it really hurts that Kemp he was out at third base too.
- 24:06As the A's could have had a lead. But there was no doubt about him being out. It was by how much?
- 24:12Now here's Ed Charles at the plate in a tied up 1-1 game. Boy I've never seen Gosger hit one that hard.
- 24:17Here's the bitch. Charles swings away and fouls it off strike one.
- 24:21You know, Monty Gosger loves to hit in this park. I don't know whether it's just a...I think it's a combination of the park, which has long been home run haven.
- 24:28And the fact that Jim's home is only 50 miles away. But I didn't want to say anything until it actually happened.
- 24:34He said before the game tonight when he walked in the dressing room he would hit a home run during this series.
- 24:39Here's the old one bitch that Charles. There's a smash to right center field. The A's are stirred up at the base head.
- 24:46Boy they were mad at Kemp and Harris being kicked out of the game or if he weren't kicked out.
- 24:52He was stopped on by the Tiger shortstop McCullough enough that he's out of the game.
- 24:58The way Dark was arguing I have to guess from here that he was kicked out though.
- 25:04Now here's Danny Kader. Charles has just had his second hit of the night. Kader has already had two hits in the game.
- 25:12Wilson to the stretch here to throw the first. Charles back in there in time.
- 25:17The home run for Gosger was his fifth of the season with Kansas City. His tenth overall this year.
- 25:23Counting his play with Boston and the A's.
- 25:28Here's the bitch. Kader goes around on a slider that's way outside. Strike one.
- 25:40One strike to count. Hit Charles the runner at first. The A's have had three hits here in the inning.
- 25:45But across the diamond and back double play.
- 25:50Got the A's out of it. Here to throw the first. Charles diving back in head first.
- 25:55Orlando Pena and the Tiger bullpen is up throwing.
- 26:01The score of the A's one and the Tigers one. Boy did that Gosger wrap the ball hard. It hit the roof of Tigers Stadium here.
- 26:11One strike count. Big lead by Charles. Here's the bitch to Kader high and inside ball one.
- 26:22A big National League happening in the seventh inning. Bill White of the Phillies has just hit a three run homer against the Dodgers.
- 26:28That means the Phillies are leading the Dodgers five to one going into the eighth inning.
- 26:33One and one count. Wilson pitching to Danny Kader. It's on the way. Kader takes it high ball two.
- 26:44Since the happening between Campaneras and McCollum occurred on the third base side of the diamond.
- 26:49That's the Tigers dug outside. So they had their players out there around the fray before the A's who had to come all the way from the first base side could get there.
- 26:59And they emptied in a hurry. Two one pitch to Kader. Swing and a miss. He chased a bad one way outside. Strike two.
- 27:07Wilson must have a great slider tonight. Some of the A's players have chased it.
- 27:12With the catcher having to reach a good distance for it.
- 27:19Incidentally, Gaskers other home run here in the stadium was hit off Fred Blanning earlier this year.
- 27:28Two two count to Kader. Throw the first base. Charles back in in time.
- 27:33The Tigers are the only club in the American League that play Kader as a full hitter.
- 27:38Their second baseman Jake Wood is playing him as though he were a full hitter.
- 27:43Kader hits a lot to right field. There goes Charles. Here's a big swing on it. Popped in the shallow left center field.
- 27:49Mickey Stanley off to his right is going to be there when it comes down. He's got it and that's all for Kansas City here in the sixth inning of the game.
- 27:57The Atlantic score one run. Three hits. There were no errors and one left on. So we go to the last of the sixth inning. It's Detroit one. Kansas City one.

- 29:16All right, here we go now, the last half of the sixth inning. Al Kailine, Tiger right fielder, Billy Dolph man.
- 29:22We're getting a report on whether or not Cavaneros was kicked out of the game.
- 29:31Cavaneros was kicked out of the ballgame, we're told. All right, here's the pitch from Blue Moon, to Al Kailine. It's outside ball one.
- 29:41The press box has announced he was not injured, Monty.
- 29:45He was limping off. I didn't think he was limping badly enough that he couldn't come back into the game.
- 29:49And I knew Alvin Dark was arguing about something and it had to be that.
- 29:52And with some forty players from each side out there, we never did see an ejection sign from the umpire.
- 29:57Here's the one oh pitch, curve ball is low. Two balls and oh strikes that got to Al Kailine.
- 30:09Cavaneros slid hard into McCullough and McCullough slammed an extra hard tag on him and bounced up and down on him with his knees before he let Cappy get up.
- 30:16When Cappy did get up, there's no question about it, he went after McCullough.
- 30:21Here's the two oh pitch, hot shot foul outside of third base.
- 30:26So they got his two balls and one strike.
- 30:28That's only the second incident I've seen Cavaneros involved in, in the big leagues.
- 30:33When Ed Kirkpatrick of the California Angels ran over Cappy on Cavaneros night in Kansas City last year.
- 30:39Cappy popped up off the ground and took a whack at him.
- 30:42He picked up some pretty big guys.
- 30:45Here's the two oh pitch, Kailine takes it high of all three.
- 30:56McCullough, I say this, from what we could see landed more punches because Cappy fell down on the first swipe he took at McCullough.
- 31:04McCullough has got right on top of him.
- 31:06Here's a three one pitch to Kailine, he'll be going for downtown at five, all four.
- 31:12So hold on, lose the bleed off man here in the sixth inning of a tied up one and one ball game.
- 31:18The last man he wants scored, the Tigers only run of the game.
- 31:22That was in the fifth inning.
- 31:24Here's Willie Horton, Tiger left fielder.
- 31:35Horton this year has blasted 27 home runs.
- 31:38He has an even 100 RBI.
- 31:43Kailine, the runner at first takes the lead.
- 31:45Here's a pitch, Horton takes it high of all three.
- 31:49McCullough, he's got a good lead.
- 31:51Kailine, the runner at first takes the lead, here's a pitch, Horton bounced it one foul.
- 31:56That one knocked down in the third base coaching box by the Tiger manager, Frank Scaff.
- 32:01Here's a score from an American League game in the sixth inning.
- 32:04The New York Yankees have just scored two runs against the White Sox.
- 32:07That means the Yankees have tied up the White Sox two and two.
- 32:14There's only one way that the Yankees could finish ahead of the Athletics this year.
- 32:18And that is if the Yankees win all three White Sox games and the A's lose all three Detroit games.
- 32:24If Kansas City wins one game with a three against Detroit here,
- 32:28there's nothing that any other team could do to keep them from finishing seven.
- 32:32Here's the pitch to Horton, it's outside, one ball, one strike.
- 32:38The A's have possibilities mathematically with only three games remaining.
- 32:42Of finishing tenth, ninth, eighth or seventh.
- 32:44The Tigers have a chance to finish in second place.
- 32:49Both clubs wanting those positions badly.
- 32:52Really having a combating battle here tonight.
- 32:55Here's a pop-up of the infield by Horton.
- 32:57Ed Charles calling for it.
- 32:59By the pitcher's mound, he makes the catch, there's one away in the sixth.
- 33:08They're going into the ninth inning at Philadelphia in that National League headlight.
- 33:11And the score is still the Phillies, five and the Dodgers one.
- 33:14The Giants are not playing tonight.
- 33:17They were rained out.
- 33:20Giants and Pirates scheduled to play each other tonight.
- 33:24Here's Don Wert, Tigers third baseman.
- 33:26He's 0-2 in the game.
- 33:27He's struck out in the second, flying up the center field in the fourth inning.
- 33:31Kaelin, the runner at first.
- 33:33Odom takes a shot at him with a quick throw over there.
- 33:35And Kaelin is back in time.
- 33:37Detroit one, Kansas City one.
- 33:42Odom's pitch, inside and high.
- 33:45You can hear that ball hit the mid down below it.
- 33:48This young fella is throwing hard.
- 33:55Manager Alvin Dark told Blue Moon if he wins this game tonight, he can go home tomorrow.
- 33:59With only two days remaining, he would not be used in any ball games.
- 34:05Here's the one-hole pitch to Don Wert.
- 34:07Curve ball.
- 34:08It's over the plate.
- 34:10Butt high.
- 34:11Two balls and no strikes.
- 34:21The Dodgers are in the ninth inning.
- 34:23The Giants are in the ninth inning.
- 34:25The attendance here tonight, 4,491.
- 34:39Odom throws the first and Kaelin goes back in on his stomach this time and almost didn't make it.
- 34:44He did, but he almost didn't.
- 34:46Odom has these Detroit runners hanging pretty close over there at first base.
- 34:53Here's a throw to first and the ball got away from Kader after he made the catch.
- 34:59He tried to put the tag on and it came out of his glove.
- 35:03Not very far.
- 35:06Kaelin stayed right where he was.
- 35:08Two balls and no strikes.
- 35:10Here's a pitch swinging a bow down.
- 35:16So the count is two balls and one strike.
- 35:26If the Tigers win two of their last three games, they will have won 90 games.
- 35:30And that's the most they have won at any time since 1961.
- 35:34The 2-1 pitch, Kaelin is going.
- 35:40The pitch is going to miss.
- 35:42Roof throws down to second base.
- 35:44It goes out in the center field.
- 35:46Kaelin is up running.
- 35:48Muddy field, the ball goes toward third.
- 35:50Kaelin dives in there, head first save.
- 35:52Al Kaelin steals second and goes to third on the throwing area by the ace catcher, Phil Roof.
- 35:58The Tigers had a hit and run play on.
- 36:04Work missed the pitch.
- 36:09But Roof got a tough one to handle.
- 36:11It was in the dirt to the outside part of the plate.
- 36:14Roof came up throwing the ball and he threw it off to the first base side of second.
- 36:20With eighth second baseman, Dick Green, going over to cover.
- 36:23He was running the opposite direction to the ball was going.
- 36:26Muddy came in in a hurry backing up the play and made a strong throw to third.
- 36:30However, Kaelin was in there with plenty of time to spare.
- 36:34So now the ace infield has got to come in.
- 36:37With one out, the Tigers have the lead run at third base.
- 36:45Two balls and two strikes on word.
- 36:47Odom really needs a strike out here.
- 36:51He goes to the full windup, rocks back on the left foot.
- 36:54Here's the pitch.
- 36:56It almost hit him at the wild pitch.
- 36:57Coming back to the screen, the Tigers out.
- 36:59Kaelin scores the lead run of the game.
- 37:12So there you have the Tigers out.
- 37:13Kaelin manufacturing a run.
- 37:16Without a ball being hit by a bat, Kaelin walked, stole second, went to third on an error
- 37:22and scored the lead run of the game on a wild pitch.
- 37:25So now the count is three and two on downward as the Tigers lead two to one.
- 37:31Odom winds up, here's the pitch.
- 37:33Outside, ball four.
- 37:37So work goes down to first base with a second walk issued by Odom here in the sixth inning.
- 37:48The batter now is Mickey Stanley.
- 37:54Detroit two, Kansas City one, sixth inning.
- 38:00Tomorrow's game will be on the air, Kansas City time at 1.45.
- 38:13Stanley single in the second inning.
- 38:15By it out to the third baseman.
- 38:18In the next inning after that, here's a throw to first by Odom.
- 38:20He almost got Wirt.
- 38:24Action out of the Kansas City bullpen.
- 38:25Wet stock up in a hurry and starts throwing.
- 38:31Odom down to the stretch.
- 38:33Fire to the plate.
- 38:34Curveball lined to left center field, base hit.
- 38:37Mutney charges the ball.
- 38:38Wirt is going to hold on at second base.
- 38:41So the Tigers have runners at first and second with one away here in the sixth inning.
- 38:48The batter now is Tiger Catcher Bill Freehand.
- 38:52Left-hander Joe Grisenda joins right-hander Wet Stock in the bullpen and manager Alvin Dark is going to the mound to talk to Odom.
- 39:00Been a tough inning for the youngster.
- 39:02He started it by walking out K-line.
- 39:04He has not been able to walk him in and get away with it very many times.
- 39:09Odom has had an amazing lack of runs scored for him in the games he's picked for Kansas City this year.
- 39:17The young guy has just not been able to make any mistakes and stay in the game.
- 39:23The most runs he's scored for him in any ball game was four.
- 39:29And that happened only twice in the 13 starts.
- 39:32So he's had as many as four runs scored for him, only twice in 13 starts, 14 counting tonight.
- 39:44Bill Freehand at the plate, the conference over on the mound.
- 39:46Odom down at the stretch.
- 39:47He's going to fire that ball.
- 39:49High-pouncing ball to the infield.
- 39:50Shavarria's got it.
- 39:51Toss it underhand to Dick Green.
- 39:52He drops the ball at second.
- 39:53Everybody's safe.
- 39:59Shavarria tossed the ball about five feet.
- 40:01A-second baseman Dick Green.
- 40:03It was an easy play there.
- 40:04Green was going to try for the double play.
- 40:06He dropped the ball at second for the error.
- 40:09The baser loaded and went out in the pitcher.
- 40:11Earl Wilson comes up.
- 40:15An error on Dick Green, the A-second baseman.
- 40:18So it's a wild inning here in the sixth.
- 40:21The Tigers with a chance to break the game open.
- 40:28Wilson came up with two men on in the second inning and lined into a double play.
- 40:32He flied out to center field in the fifth inning.
- 40:35Bases are loaded, one away.
- 40:37Wilson cocks that bat.
- 40:38Here's the line to fix for Odom.
- 40:40Swing and a miss strike one.
- 40:48Runners for the Tigers.
- 40:50Wirt is at third base.
- 40:53Stanley at second, free hand at first.
- 40:58The cage is full of Tigers right now.
- 41:02Here's the line.
- 41:03Odom fires.
- 41:04Swing and a foul back strike two.
- 41:06Wilson got his fix that time.
- 41:08That's the kind you hit out of the park to get a round on.
- 41:11A fast ball about letter high.
- 41:15He just hit under the ball a little bit and turned away from the play talking to himself.
- 41:21Score two to one Detroit.
- 41:26Two strikes on Wilson.
- 41:29Here's the line.
- 41:30Odom fires to the plate.
- 41:31Inside and high ball one.
- 41:35Wilson came into professional baseball in the Red Sox organization as a catcher.
- 41:41He had such a great arm.
- 41:43They made a pitcher on him and he has accomplished a lot of things as a pitcher.
- 41:48He's got them, the ultimate, he fixed a no hitter with the Red Sox.
- 41:54That got one and two.
- 41:56Odom rocks back.
- 41:58Fires to the plate.
- 41:59Bouncing ball towards short through the middle center field base hit.
- 42:02Wirt comes in to score.
- 42:03Stanley is right behind him.
- 42:05Runners at first and second.
- 42:06Two runs come in to score on the base hit by Earl Wilson.
- 42:10Drops the ball at second.
- 42:11Everybody's safe.
- 42:16Cavalier tossed the ball about five feet to eighth second baseman Dick Green.
- 42:20It was an easy play there.
- 42:22Green was going to try for the double play.
- 42:24He dropped the ball at second for the error.
- 42:26The bases are loaded and went out and the pitcher, Earl Wilson, comes up.
- 42:32An error on Dick Green, the eighth second baseman.
- 42:35So it's a wild inning here.
- 42:37In the sixth, the Tigers with a chance to break the game open.
- 42:45Wilson came up with two men on in the second inning and lined into a double play.
- 42:49He flied out to center field in the fifth inning.
- 42:52Bases are loaded, one away.
- 42:54Wilson cocks that bat.
- 42:55Here's the line.
- 42:56The pitch from Odom.
- 42:57Swing and a miss, strike one.
- 43:06Runners for the Tigers.
- 43:07Wirt is at third base.
- 43:10Stanley at second.
- 43:11Free hand at first.
- 43:15The cage is full of Tigers right now.
- 43:19Here's the line.
- 43:20Odom fires.
- 43:21Swing and a foul back, strike two.
- 43:23Wilson got his pitch that time.
- 43:25That's the kind you hit out of the park to get around on.
- 43:28A fastball about letter high.
- 43:32He just hit under the ball a little bit and turned away from the play talking to himself.
- 43:38Score two to one Detroit.
- 43:43Two strikes on Wilson.
- 43:46Here's the line.
- 43:47Odom fires to the plate.
- 43:48Inside at high ball one.
- 43:52Wilson came into professional baseball in the Red Sox organization as a catcher.
- 43:58He had such a great arm.
- 44:00They made a pitcher of him and he has accomplished a lot of things as a pitcher.
- 44:05He's got a lot of them, the ultimate.
- 44:08He pitched a no-hitter with the Red Sox.
- 44:11That got one and two.
- 44:13Odom rocks back.
- 44:15Fires to the plate.
- 44:16Bouncing ball toward short through the middle center field.
- 44:18Base hit.
- 44:19Wirt comes in to score.
- 44:20Stanley is right behind him.
- 44:22Runners at first and second.
- 44:23Two runs come in to score on the base hit by Earl Wilson.
- 44:26So the score now is Detroit four and Kansas City one.
- 44:42Wilson hit one for just a fleeting second.
- 44:44Looked like a double play ball.
- 44:46But Shavarria was playing over a little bit to his right.
- 44:49And the ball went to Oz.
- 44:50He's left on out in the center field.
- 44:55And he's out in the batter, Jake Wood.
- 45:02So Blue Moon Odom has given up more runs in this ball game than he had given up in his last four games combined.
- 45:12Right hander throws to Wood.
- 45:13It's low for ball one.
- 45:21Boy, you can see how that Earl Wilson could win a lot of ball games with a club like Detroit.
- 45:26With his own bat.
- 45:29He's knocked in a lot of runs.
- 45:30He got to stay in a lot of close games that way.
- 45:33Here's the one-oh pitch.
- 45:34Curved ball.
- 45:35Too low.
- 45:36Ball two.
- 45:40Two balls and no strikes to Jake Wood.
- 45:43The next batter is Dick McCollum who knocked in a run in the fifth inning to give the Tigers a brief lead of one-nothing.
- 45:49The A's Jim Gosker came back in the sixth and felted one off the roof to tie it up for one-and-one.
- 45:59Here's Odom's two-oh pitch to Jake Wood.
- 46:01It's high for ball three.
- 46:04And Alvin Darker's going to the mound.
- 46:05That's all for Odom tonight.
- 46:11The West Stock is coming out of the A's bullpen with a count of three balls and no strikes on Jake Wood.
- 46:16Runners at first and second.
- 46:20The Blue Moon Odom comes out of a ball game prior to six innings for the first time in his last seven starts.
- 46:29And he didn't have too much help here in this inning.
- 46:31Two errors and a stolen base set up the big inning for the Tigers.
- 46:36That will be up to West Stock to try to cut it off.
- 46:38Lynn, Moon officially worked five and one-third innings, tagged for four runs that came on seven hits.
- 46:46He walked four, struck out three, and threw a wild pitch.
- 46:50I don't know what these explosions are here.
- 46:54They're louder than firecrackers.
- 46:57Going off the first three we heard was while Moon was making some crucial pitches.
- 47:02And they seem to be coming from the left field stands.
- 47:04This one that just went off now is right over by the A's dugout.
- 47:08Moon victimized by shaky defense.
- 47:12The A's have committed three errors tonight, two of them in this inning.
- 47:16Boy, a wild pitch hurt.
- 47:21And walks have hurt Moon.
- 47:23It all started off when he walked K-line, who stole second.
- 47:27Roost throw trying to get the Tiger off.
- 47:30Giller went into center field as he advanced to third and K-line came home on a wild pitch to break the tie and make it two to one.
- 47:37Moon went on and got Willie Horton to pop up.
- 47:40Good pitch, too.
- 47:43But then he proceeded to walk downward.
- 47:47Mickey Stanley lined a single to center, and then it was freehands ball that was grounded to short to Shaverea,
- 47:56who flipped about five or six feet over to Dick Green, and Green couldn't hang on to the ball.
- 48:00That set the stage for Wilson.
- 48:02Two runs batted in single to center with a count of three and all.
- 48:06West Stock is in the pitch to Jake Wood.
- 48:08If he goes on and walks in here, it'll be charged to Odom.
- 48:12Money.
- 48:14West Stock in his 35th game of the season for Kansas City.
- 48:18Will throw off the stretch.
- 48:20Three-oh pitch.
- 48:21He got it in there.
- 48:22Three and one now.
- 48:25Really a big play when Green dropped the ball at second because had he caught that ball,
- 48:30even if he didn't get the double play, the infield would have been back on the ball hit by Wilson,
- 48:35and it would have been gobbled up easily by the shortstop.
- 48:37As it was, the shortstop was in.
- 48:39Here's a three-one pitch.
- 48:40It popped up short right field.
- 48:42Hirschberger coming in, calling for it.
- 48:45The runners are going to hold on.
- 48:46Mack makes the catch and Stock retires the man.
- 48:56So West Stock out of the bullpen with a three and O count.
- 49:02Manages to retire Wood.
- 49:05And West Stock now must pitch to Dick McCollough with two arms.
- 49:14Yes, sir, the positioning of the infield means quite a bit.
- 49:21And on the ball, Wilson hit.
- 49:23It's a routine ball for a shortstop if he's playing his normal position with two down.
- 49:26But Shavarillo was in, trying for the double play with only one out,
- 49:32and was not able to get over to the ball Wilson got.
- 49:39So that was the big error of the inning, and it came on an easy chance.
- 49:45West Stock has just called Phil Roof out for a short conference.
- 49:51Freehand leads off second, Wilson off first base.
- 49:54Stock fires a strike call in the outside corner to McCollough.
- 50:01Stock scheduled the number four hitter.
- 50:07The next inning for Kansas City, if the A's got that far,
- 50:10Alvin Dark has hand or hand in presenting the bullpen.
- 50:13The O-one pitch, McCollough takes it outside one and one.
- 50:17West, the job right here is to make sure he doesn't give McCollough a ball he can hit out of the park.
- 50:22So he's trying to keep it away from him.
- 50:27Tigers are leading four to one in an explosive game here, just three days from the end of the season.
- 50:32A pitch, slider outside, ball two.
- 50:39Norm Cash, the next hitter.
- 50:43On deck swinging a bat.
- 50:45This is the eighth man to bat for Detroit here in the sixth inning of the game.
- 50:53Out of the two-one pitch, ball three.
- 50:56Three balls and a strike.
- 50:58Stock really trying to pitch fine here.
- 51:05Orlando Pena throwing in the Detroit bullpen.
- 51:11Tigers really need to win this one because the twins are putting it on the Orioles in a doubleheader tonight.
- 51:17The pitch, ball four, he walked in the base and a loaded.
- 51:22And that's all for West Stock as Alvin Dark comes out of the dugout to make another move into the A's bullpen.
- 51:27Going to bring on the left-hander Joe Grisenda.
- 51:33So Stock pitches to two men, retires one of them.
- 51:41And it will be Grisenda coming on to try to get a mighty big out.
- 51:50So while he comes on, let's pause for station identification.
- 51:53This is the Kansas City A's baseball network.
- 51:56Dial 81, KCMO Radio, Kansas City, Missouri with the Jack Elliott Good Morning World Show.
- 52:01It's why people of the know depend on KCMO Radio for music.
- 52:05It's nine o'clock.
- 52:06At Tiger Stadium in Detroit, this is Monty Moore with Lynn Parris.
- 52:11We'll be on the air tomorrow at 1.45 Kansas City time and the last game of the season.
- 52:17Be on at 12.15 Kansas City time on Sunday.
- 52:22Al Grisenda takes his warm-up tosses here prior to pitching to norm cash with the bases loaded.
- 52:27Pass along some statistics that we have accumulated from our records that we keep daily on the ball club
- 52:33that might prove interesting to you as to what kind of year the athletics have had this year compared to last year,
- 52:37no matter where we finished.
- 52:39Last year the A's finished in 10th place and only spent one day of the entire season out of 10th place.
- 52:45It was on September 3rd in L.A.
- 52:46We won a doubleheader one night and got into 9th place and the next day went back in and stayed.
- 52:51This year it's been much contrast.
- 52:52The A's have spent one day in 6th place, two days this season.
- 52:56The A's were in 7th, 63 days in 8th place.
- 53:02Actually we've had more than two days in 7th place.
- 53:05We've had 12 days in 7th, 63 days in 8th, 25 days the A's spent in 9th place and 26 days in 10th this year.
- 53:13So the A's have spent more time in 8th place this year, 63 days than in any other position.
- 53:19But we've got a chance if we can win one game in the next three to finish in 7th place.
- 53:27This man right here in Armcash could have a lot to do with it.
- 53:30As he's up with the bases loaded, Tiger's already leading 4-1.
- 53:33They said here he might put it out of reach.
- 53:35Here's the line, Grisenda throws, there's a fly ball, shallow right center.
- 53:38That's going to be tough.
- 53:39Mundy's coming in, not so tough after all, he's got it.
- 53:42So Grisenda makes one pitch at Armcash and gets it on a fly ball in the shallow center field.
- 53:49But here in the big sixth inning, the Detroit Tigers get three runs.
- 53:59Only two hits, two errors, and three men left on.
- 54:04So the score after six full innings, Detroit 4, Kansas City 1.
- 54:11All right, let's glance now at scores of other games.
- 54:14And at Torre, National League dogfight, the Dodgers have gone down to defeat.
- 54:19They've just been beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3.
- 54:23They rallied for two runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough.
- 54:26And Bill White is the hero of that ballgame.
- 54:28He smashed a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
- 54:31Short, a long-time Dodger nemesis, beats Claude Osteen.
- 54:35The giant Pittsburgh game has been rained off.
- 54:38So the Pirates are still alive and still breathing, even though staggering.
- 54:43Cardinals leading the Cubs 2-0 in the ninth inning.
- 54:46Atlanta Cincinnati also rained off.
- 54:48The Mets shut out Houston tonight 1-0.
- 54:51And the Americans, White Sox have picked up two more runs
- 54:54and now lead the Yankees 4-2, going into the seventh.
- 54:57Minnesota has taken a double header from Baltimore, 10-7 and 8-2.
- 55:02Wow, they really laid it out.
- 55:04Powerful hitting attack.
- 55:05Cleveland, California not yet underway.
- 55:07In the Minnesota double defeat of Baltimore, in the first game,
- 55:14the Twins pounded out 10 runs that came on 13 hits.
- 55:18In the night cap, they got nine hits, mounted for an eight-run attack
- 55:22and winning 8-2.
- 55:23Mudcat Grant got the victory in the first game, Jim Merritt in the second.
- 55:28And the Baltimore Orioles Aces, both of them went down to defeat tonight.
- 55:33The two are expected to open up against the National League Champions next week.
- 55:38Dave McNally expected to pitch the opener if the Dodgers win, and Jim Palmer.
- 55:45All right, we go to the seventh inning now.
- 55:47The A's need three runs to get back in this ball game.
- 55:49They'll lead it off with Rick Munday, a strikeout victim twice in the game.
- 55:53Big strikeout occurred in the fourth inning with two on and two out.
- 55:57And a nothing-nothing game at the time.
- 55:59Here's the pitch to the left-hand batter, inside ball one.
- 56:05Two of the runs scored in the sixth inning go unearned.
- 56:13One ball and no strikes to Munday.
- 56:16Here's the pitch, foul ball right back below us.
- 56:22Rick Munday, number one draft choice two seasons ago
- 56:28among all the free agents in baseball.
- 56:31Arizona State product, an All-American in college.
- 56:36In two years in the A's farm system, he has played on two pennant winners.
- 56:40This year he had 22 home runs, knocked in 72 runs.
- 56:45Here's a one-on-one pitch.
- 56:47It's a little low, ball two, two-and-one account.
- 56:51Rick has had trouble getting the wood on the ball in the last five ball games in which he's played.
- 56:57He struck out at least twice in every one of them and three times in one.
- 57:02Pitch, bouncing ball foul outside of first base.
- 57:08Two balls, two strikes on Munday will be followed by Dick Green and Phil Roof.
- 57:14Ken Sanders is warming up in the A's bullpen now.
- 57:17Joe Grisenda did a fine job on cash.
- 57:20He hit it right on the fist with what looked to be a slider.
- 57:27Detroit four, Kansas City one.
- 57:30The A's had three innings left in which to try to get those three runs back, keep it alive.
- 57:36Now the two-two pitch, that's high ball three.
- 57:40Wilson has not walked a batter in a game.
- 57:42That's what makes it so tough to beat him. You've got to beat him with a bat.
- 57:47He doesn't give you any help.
- 57:53That guy fires a three-two pitch in there.
- 57:56Ball four, Munday is on to start the seventh inning.
- 58:01Wilson finally walked a man.
- 58:04Odom walked four in the ball game.
- 58:07And out of the four walks, three scored runs.
- 58:14Now here's A's second baseman, Dick Green, who's 0 for 2.
- 58:20Green started tonight's action with a 2.45 batting average.
- 58:26Here's the pitch. Inside and high, ball one.
- 58:30Kaffee Cavanaer has kicked out of a ball game for the first time in his big league career tonight.
- 58:35Because of an altercation on the tail end of a double play in the sixth inning,
- 58:40Kaffee tried to go from first to third on an infield out.
- 58:43But the throw now, Dick McCullough put the tag on him and came up fighting.
- 58:47The pitch fouled off by Green, one and one.
- 58:53McCullough had the ball well ahead of Cavanaer's getting into third and Kaffee
- 58:57doing all he could to try to get in there safely.
- 58:59Slipped hard and he slid high into McCullough, who didn't like it a bit.
- 59:04Before he let Kaffee up, he had stomped him a couple of times with the knees
- 59:08and slammed that ball down into his chest.
- 59:10McCullough could get up, got into a pretty good fight.
- 59:14Here's the one-one pitch. Green bounced it one out through the middle.
- 59:17That's in the center field, a hit.
- 59:18Mundy rounding second, he's digging for third.
- 59:20And he's going to make it.
- 59:23No throw on the third base. Stanley bobbled the ball just momentarily out in short center.
- 59:28So the A's are set up now with runners at first and third and nobody down.
- 59:31And Larry Stahl will pinch it for Phil Rue.
- 59:37Larry Stahl batting 249 in his rookie year in the big leagues.
- 59:40He's been at the pipe 313 times, has 78 hits including five home runs.
- 59:46I'd like to see history repeat here Mundy.
- 59:48The very first home run the A's got all year long was off the bat of this youngster right here in this stadium.
- 59:54Larry Stahl, who's got five home runs the first month of the season and hasn't had one since.
- 1:00:04It's surprising to everybody to see Larry got those five that quickly.
- 1:00:07He's never been a big home run production man in the A's minor league system.
- 1:00:12Green links it first. Mundy at third.
- 1:00:14Here's the pitch from Wilson.
- 1:00:15Oh, ball one.
- 1:00:18But what a ballpark this is for a left-handed batter to be up with a chance to hit the bat.
- 1:00:24The easiest home run ballpark for a left-handed hitter in the American League including Yankee Stadium.
- 1:00:31One at O'Conn. Wilson throws. That's in the dirt ball too.
- 1:00:38Tim Tolton is on deck for Kansas City.
- 1:00:42Jack Akers goes to work in the bullpen next to Ken Sanders.
- 1:00:46Frank Scaff, Tiger manager, walking across the foul line at third towards the mound.
- 1:00:51He has Orlando Pena ready at the bullpen in case he wants to use it.
- 1:00:55You're going to see plenty of action among all the pitchers in this three-game series.
- 1:01:01Until positions are clenched, the Tigers need at least two wins in the series to clench second place,
- 1:01:09and the A's need one win in the series to clench seventh place.
- 1:01:13And both managers are going to go all out to try to get those positions.
- 1:01:16That's all for Earl Wilson.
- 1:01:18Orlando Pena coming out of the Tiger bullpen as Earl Wilson is through for tonight.
- 1:01:23So he leaves the game after pitching six innings, and he leaves it with a 4-1 lead.
- 1:01:33Well, then we started a while ago going over how the A's have done this year in comparison to last year.
- 1:01:40You can look at the losing streaks that the Bobb Club in Kansas City had last year and the ones the A's had this year.
- 1:01:46This year the A's have never lost more than five games in a row.
- 1:01:49Well, last year the 65th edition of Kansas City A's lost five in a row twice, lost six in a row one time,
- 1:01:56the A's lost seven in a row three different times last year, and they lost eight in a row one time in 1965.
- 1:02:03So we had actually last year a total of seven long losing streaks.
- 1:02:09This year the A's have had as many as five losses in a row only one time.
- 1:02:14The longest winning streak last year was four in a row, and the A's did that only one time.
- 1:02:18This year the A's have had several four-game winning streaks and several three-game wins in a row
- 1:02:25and actually won eight in a row at one time, which is the second best in the history of Kansas City baseball.
- 1:02:32The one big factor you've got to look at this year is the athletic scoring.
- 1:02:37The A's, in only 25 games out of 157 they played, scored as many as five runs in a game.
- 1:02:45That's only 25 times this year have the A's scored five runs or over in a ballgame.
- 1:02:53That's not too many. We were shut out 15 times this year.
- 1:02:58The A's 20 times scored only one run, 27 times scored two runs, 25 times scored only three runs in a game,
- 1:03:05and 25 times scored only four runs in a game.
- 1:03:09Eleven times did the A's score more than seven in a game, and our high for the season?
- 1:03:16Well, that came one night against the California Angels. The A's won by a score of 14 to 2.
- 1:03:23So it's been a lack of scoring ability for Kansas City this year that it's kept the A's from being in that first division.
- 1:03:32But it's certainly been the most interesting year and entertaining year in Kansas City baseball history.
- 1:03:37Now here is Orlando Pena, a right-hand reliever for the Tigers, former Kansas City A's player,
- 1:03:43pitching to Larry Stahl with a count of two balls and no strikes.
- 1:03:46That Pena throws every pitch known to baseball.
- 1:03:49Here it comes, Stahl takes it outside ball three.
- 1:03:55Now Pena throws one more bad one. The walk will be charged to Earl Wilson.
- 1:04:01Orlando is the best control pitcher the Tigers have, one of the best Kansas City ever had.
- 1:04:10Here's the pitch. There's a fly ball right center field, hit pretty well, way back, way back.
- 1:04:14Stanley on the warning track has got the ball in his glove and makes the catch.
- 1:04:18Mundy tags up a third and comes across the score.
- 1:04:21As Larry Stahl belted one over 400 feet into right center field,
- 1:04:25if he had pulled that ball six feet it would have been a home run and the ball game would have been tied up.
- 1:04:30But if is a mighty big word.
- 1:04:33So now there's one away, the score four to two and the batter is Tim Tulten.
- 1:04:39Tulten having a fantastic year for Kansas City with the bat hitting 333.
- 1:04:44He's had only one home run. He was off-milled, startled by the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:04:51Dick Green held out at first base.
- 1:04:54That goes by the way as a sacrifice fly for Larry Stahl and the run batted in.
- 1:05:03Boy he really hit it but here at Tiger Stadium, left center and right center and straightaway center,
- 1:05:08are mighty big parts of the ballpark.
- 1:05:11Here's Tulten batting for Joe Grisenda.
- 1:05:15Runner at first and one away.
- 1:05:17There's a drive to right center, it's going, it's going. Bye-bye baseball, we got a tie ball game.
- 1:05:24Tim Tulten hitting the first pitch by Peña into the upper deck in right field.
- 1:05:34Here's Dick Green stepping on home plate. Right behind him Tim Tulten.
- 1:05:38Tulten gets the handshake of the Yankees players and the dugout he goes.
- 1:05:42And he's swarmed by Kansas City Kelly Green Jackets.
- 1:05:46And they're going to form all game.
- 1:05:48Brand new and starting all over again and here's Ossie Shavarria to lead off for Kansas City now.
- 1:05:56Boy that Tulten comes off that bench swinging a bat and this time he unloaded one way up in the upper deck.
- 1:06:05So it's now Orlando Peña's ball game.
- 1:06:09Here's a bit to Ossie Shavarria. He pops it up on the third base side in foul territory.
- 1:06:15Here Tiger third baseman makes the grab in there two down.
- 1:06:18Shavarria batting because Campaneros was kicked out of the ball game for the first time in his big league career.
- 1:06:24Well if you can imagine being kicked out of a game here three days before the end of the season.
- 1:06:30The kind of a game we have going here tonight and the kind of a series.
- 1:06:34Boy it's great to have something going in the last series of the season too.
- 1:06:37Here's Mike Hertzberger now.
- 1:06:41Mike is 0 for 3 in the game. A pitch.
- 1:06:45It's in there for a call strike.
- 1:06:49Ken Tulten second big league home run. This was a man sized over.
- 1:06:54It might have been out in Kansas City even.
- 1:06:57Here's the 0-1 pitch. Swing and a miss strike two.
- 1:07:12Peña ahead of Hertzberger. Here's the 0-2 pitch.
- 1:07:15It popped up to the right side of the infield.
- 1:07:17Norm Cash Tiger first baseman is there. He's got it.
- 1:07:20But the Athletics have come back to tie the ball game in the seventh inning.
- 1:07:24Three runs for Kansas City. Two hits. No errors. Nobody left.
- 1:07:28So we go down to the last of the seventh inning. The score is the A's for the Tigers four.
- 1:07:34Well it's started. Every day except Sunday KCMO Radio 81 is giving away four first nighter tickets to the American Royal.
- 1:07:42Every week we're giving away a box of 24 prime Kansas City steaks.
- 1:07:46And by October 19th we'll give to some lucky person listed in the Kansas City phone book not one but two brand new his and her Mustangs.
- 1:07:53How does it work? All you have to do is listen to KCMO Radio and get the name of the KCMO Radio Wrangler of the Hour.
- 1:08:00Then if the KCMO cowgirl calls you and you have the correct name you will receive a copy of Better Homes and Gardens Barbecue and Picnic Book.
- 1:08:07And your name goes into the Stetson for the Daily Weekly and Grand Prize drawings.
- 1:08:11Even if we call you and you don't know the name of the KCMO Radio Wrangler of the Hour you're still eligible for the Daily drawings.
- 1:08:17Now what could be fairer than that? So here's what you do.
- 1:08:20Listen to KCMO Radio 81. Get the name of the KCMO Radio Wrangler of the Hour and wait for the telephone to ring.
- 1:08:26If it's the KCMO cowgirl calling you well who knows you just might win those two new his and her Mustangs.
- 1:08:33Last hand of inning number seven and coming out of that A's bullpen a guy who has done it before, Jack Akers. Jack Akers, the leading relief man in the American League, comes into a game for the 66th time this year.
- 1:08:55He has tied the all-time American League record for saves but Jack comes in tonight with no chance at a save.
- 1:09:02If he's a picture of record here tonight he'll either be a winner or a loser.
- 1:09:06No save involved because the A's are not ahead right now.
- 1:09:09Tim Tauten stays in the game as the A's catcher.
- 1:09:21All right, Jack Akers must face, first of all, Al Kaelin.
- 1:09:26Akers record, six wins, four losses, 26 saves.
- 1:09:35This is the fourth picture used by Alvin Dark. The fixer Kaelin. Strike and get the name.
- 1:09:42In Akers' last outing he picked an inning, gave up two hits, no runs.
- 1:09:49Five days ago Jack worked in the game.
- 1:09:56Now the 0-1 fix from the right-hander.
- 1:09:58Spine-arm curve, Kaelin way out front swinging and missing, strike two.
- 1:10:04Ball-of-ball game here in the Tigers Stadium in Detroit.
- 1:10:08The Tigers got a 1-0 lead. The A's came back to tie it up on a tremendous homer by Gosgar in the sixth.
- 1:10:14The Tigers scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead and the A's came right back in the seventh with three to tie.
- 1:10:20Here's the fix. A little low with a side-arm sinker. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:10:30In this, the last of the seventh, it's Kaelin, Horton and Wirtz, the back for Detroit.
- 1:10:39Here's his bet. Swing and a miss, strike three, he got Kaelin. Man and he threw a big breaking curve.
- 1:10:49The Aker strikes out the man he faces.
- 1:10:55Let's now pitch to Willie Horton.
- 1:11:00That's score. Kansas City, 4-4 Detroit, last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:11:05That's all nice, but with a game like this, you don't notice the weather.
- 1:11:10Here's the line, the pitch coming. Side-arm curve, Paul strikes to Willie.
- 1:11:18Willie Horton, big guy, is requested from the Tigers that he be allowed to wear Charlie Dressen.
- 1:11:25Old number next year. Dressen, the Tiger manager, is the start of the year.
- 1:11:31Passed away during the season. Here's the pitch. Swinging, strike two, right over the top of an Aker side-arm kicker.
- 1:11:45No balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:49Boy, there have been some outstanding defensive plays in this ballgame.
- 1:11:53There have been some that have not been too outstanding.
- 1:11:56The Conde in center field has made a couple of sparklers.
- 1:12:00Aker's 0-2 pitch. Outside, ball one.
- 1:12:13One ball, two strikes on Horton. One out here in the seventh.
- 1:12:18The bottom of our game should be a Danny 2. Jim Nash against Denny McClain. Here's the pitch.
- 1:12:23Side-arm curve, line to left. Horton hung out a rope for a base hit.
- 1:12:27Horton way out of the front foot. Reached out across the plate that time and hit the ball between the third baseman and shortstop.
- 1:12:34Aker made a fine pitch, but Horton has got such great power.
- 1:12:37He just reached out there and one-handed the ball out in the left.
- 1:12:42So Horton is on with one out.
- 1:12:44And the batter is Don Wirt, who drew a walk in the sixth inning from Blue Mood Old on the starter here tonight.
- 1:12:50Oh, the ran into defensive problems behind him and Wild is committed by himself.
- 1:13:03Here's a pitch. Low and away, ball one.
- 1:13:07One ball and those strikes to Tiger, third baseman Don Wirt.
- 1:13:12Frank Scaff, the Tiger manager, actively participates in the game from the third base coaching box while the Tigers are at the plate.
- 1:13:23Got that loud foghorn voice.
- 1:13:27Here's the pitch. There's a line shot right field base hit.
- 1:13:30Horton goes to second and holds on as Hertzberger is upholding.
- 1:13:35So now the Tigers have teed off on Aker here in the seventh inning.
- 1:13:40After he got K-line, Horton dumped one out in the shallow left and now Wirt has hit one between first and second and to right.
- 1:13:47And that brings up Mickey Stanley who's had two hits in the game.
- 1:13:53So Aker needs a double play ball thrown here.
- 1:14:01Aker, Gary, a left-hander, and Fred Gladding, a right-hander up in the Detroit bullpen throwing.
- 1:14:07Score tied 4-4 Detroit with an uprising again here in the seventh.
- 1:14:12A fairly well-typical Detroit-Canva City ball game, I'd say.
- 1:14:16Boy, if we had some thrillers with this club this year.
- 1:14:21Aker throws. Strike it in there.
- 1:14:29Artie Shavarria at shortstop as Campaneras was kicked out of the ball game.
- 1:14:34And they're getting involved in a fight with Dick McCallop, the Tigers shortstop in the sixth inning.
- 1:14:46Aker's no ball, one strike count to Stanley.
- 1:14:49Inside and low, it's one and one.
- 1:14:59And he's been taunting in the game for Kansas City behind the plate as he benched it for Joe Grisinda
- 1:15:04and unloaded a two-run homer to tie it up.
- 1:15:11A ball and a strike. Right-handed batting Stanley cocks that bat over his right shoulder.
- 1:15:16Aker throws. Popped up outside of first. Danny Cater will have a play on it in front of the A's dugout.
- 1:15:22He's got it. Renner's hold on at first and second with two down.
- 1:15:25And now the batter will be Bill Frihan.
- 1:15:33I'd like to remind you, fans, that A's season ticket holders have within the past day or so
- 1:15:40received renewal forms for your 1967 Kansas City A's season tickets.
- 1:15:48We'd like to remind you that with 67 baseball season coming up in Kansas City,
- 1:15:53the A's should have the greatest season ever.
- 1:15:55If you want to join the swing to the swing of A's, be sure and renew your season tickets.
- 1:15:59And if you haven't had any this year, call and get some applications sent to you for next year.
- 1:16:04The first pitch to Frihan is inside ball one.
- 1:16:07All you have to do if you're interested in becoming an A's season ticket holder,
- 1:16:10believe me, that's the best way to be able to see ball games from the same seat every night, guaranteed location.
- 1:16:16Just call or write the A's ticket office at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City,
- 1:16:20and they'll get those application forms for 1967 season tickets to you in a mail real soon.
- 1:16:27Martin leads off second. Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:30That's over a called strike, one and one.
- 1:16:40Join the swing to our swinging A's for 67. Make sure you have season tickets.
- 1:16:47Get those renewals back in in a hurry to ensure your same seat you had this year.
- 1:16:51If you weren't a season ticket holder, call or write and they'll send you some applications for next year.
- 1:16:56Acres one-one pitch. Frihan takes it low. Ball two.
- 1:17:01Two balls in one strike to count.
- 1:17:03Big Tiger Catcher had a single in the second inning. He walked and scored a run in the fifth.
- 1:17:08And hit the bouncing ball to shortstop in the sixth inning.
- 1:17:11The Chavarilla fielded behind the mound and tossed underhanded to Dick Green at second.
- 1:17:15Then allowed Stanley to go in there when Green dropped the ball.
- 1:17:22Two balls, one strike count.
- 1:17:26Acres chops away on that gun. Checks the runner at second.
- 1:17:29Fires to the plate. Bouncing ball towards third. That's foul.
- 1:17:34Brother count is two and two on Bill Frihan.
- 1:17:42The A's are going to end the season having played only 160 games.
- 1:17:46Instead of their 162, Boston and Washington have already ended their season.
- 1:17:53It's just a matter of those two teams standing by and waiting to see what happens to Kansas City and New York after their standings.
- 1:18:00Two and two count.
- 1:18:03Acres down to the belt in the stretch. Frihan ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:06Outside ball three.
- 1:18:09And now the runners will be going again on a 3-2 pitch.
- 1:18:13The Tigers got their first run in the fifth inning with a count of three and two on McCullough and runners at first and second.
- 1:18:19They broke McCullough line to single out in the right center field.
- 1:18:24Really a big play in the game now is the fact that Mundy was able to cut that off and hold it to a single.
- 1:18:29And hold them to one run on the play.
- 1:18:33The Horton will break from second.
- 1:18:35Work from first. The infield is back for Kansas City.
- 1:18:40Acres call his side.
- 1:18:43Tulsen gives him the target.
- 1:18:46There go the runners. Here's a 3-2 pitch. Swing it on the loop around behind first.
- 1:18:50Kader's going back. He's not going to be able to get it.
- 1:18:52It falls in there. Here's Wink going to play two later run scores.
- 1:19:00That ball was hit no more than ten feet in behind where Danny Kader was playing.
- 1:19:05It went over his head and he started back on it and stopped for some reason.
- 1:19:09And then started again and by then it was too late.
- 1:19:13Dick Green headed over that way but could not get it.
- 1:19:18The Tigers have broken the tie and lead five to four with runners at first and third.
- 1:19:23When that ball was hit I thought the inning was over for sure.
- 1:19:26There's no way in the world that ball could have been falling in there for a hit.
- 1:19:31But Kader somehow turned wrong on the ball and never did get back on it at all.
- 1:19:36It goes to the hit and a run scores.
- 1:19:40Green picked it up and threw to the plate late.
- 1:19:42Now Jerry Loughey's coming out as a pinch hitter for the pitcher banger.
- 1:19:52Man alive what a weird game this is.
- 1:19:57The Tigers are just being handed some runs.
- 1:20:09Kader reacted at first as if he didn't see the ball.
- 1:20:13He didn't even move after it at first and then he started back and he turned the wrong way on it.
- 1:20:18He got his glove going away and it fell about a foot from where he ended up.
- 1:20:23Now runners at first and third and here's Loughey up as a pinch hitter.
- 1:20:27Acre fires, Loughey takes it inside and I have all one.
- 1:20:42Five Kansas City four, last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:20:49Acre's fetch, Loughey takes it low ball two.
- 1:20:55Loughey's been bothered by bad legs a lot this year but he's hung in there and still played 110 games.
- 1:21:01Jerry's average 233 about the lowest he's ever had in the big leagues.
- 1:21:06He's a good line drive type hitter, hard to strike out.
- 1:21:12Word at third, free hand at first, here's a pitch, that's a strike two and one now.
- 1:21:29Two balls, one strike.
- 1:21:36Acre's got the sign from Taunton, checks the runners.
- 1:21:40He pitches, Loughey takes it high ball three.
- 1:21:44Jack making a concerted effort to keep that ball up and in on Loughey.
- 1:21:56What a game here at Tigers City and there will be two more in the series and it will all be over for 66.
- 1:22:03Three and one count to Loughey, Acre's fetch, there's a drive to right field, falling fast, here's Herzberger coming in, he makes the three-screen catch.
- 1:22:12Loughey had a line drive to right but Herzberger playing fairly shallow was able to get to it.
- 1:22:17And that retires the side but the Tigers put the lead run up on the board.
- 1:22:21Three base hits, no errors, two left. So we call to the eighth to score Detroit 5, Kansas City 4.
- 1:22:31Justice victory is important to Kansas City here tonight, so is it for the Detroit Tigers because the Minnesota Twins already have gone on and taken a double header.
- 1:22:40And the situation is this, it puts Minnesota's percentage at 550.
- 1:22:45They're really waging a dogfight these two teams for second place money which is considerable difference financially per player.
- 1:22:51Going into tonight's action, the Twins were just a game and a half behind Detroit.
- 1:22:56In effect, right now, they are tied with the Tigers pending the outcome of this ball game.
- 1:23:02If Minnesota or if the Tigers should lose this game, the A's able to come from behind, Minnesota would be tied with Detroit.
- 1:23:12The only way the Tigers can stay ahead is to hang on here and get a win.
- 1:23:20So they're fighting hard for that second place money. The A's are fighting hard to nail down a victory.
- 1:23:25They must get one win in this series.
- 1:23:29The A's need only one win to nail down seventh place for sure.
- 1:23:34Washington and Boston both have finished.
- 1:23:36Plumpee takes it low ball two. Plumpee's been bothered by bad legs a lot this year, but he's hung in there and still played 110 games.
- 1:23:46Jerry's average, 233, about the lowest he's ever had in a big league.
- 1:23:52He's a good line drive type hitter, hard to strike out.
- 1:23:58Wirt at third, freehand at first, here's a pitch. That's a strike, two and one now.
- 1:24:14Two balls, one strike.
- 1:24:22Akers got the sign from Salton, checks the runners. He pitches. Plumpee takes it high of all threes.
- 1:24:29Jack making a concerted effort to keep that ball up and in on Plumpee.
- 1:24:42What a game here at Tigers State.
- 1:24:45And there'll be two more in the series and it'll all be over for 66.
- 1:24:49And one count to Lumpy. Akers pitch. There's a drive to right field, falling fast.
- 1:24:54Here's Herzberger coming in, he makes a shooting test.
- 1:24:58Lumpy had a line drive to right, but Herzberger playing fairly shallow was able to get to it.
- 1:25:02And that retires the side, but the Tigers put the lead run up on the board.
- 1:25:06Three base hits, no errors, two left.
- 1:25:10Though we go to the eighth to score to truck five, Kansas City four.
- 1:25:17The victory is important to Kansas City here tonight.
- 1:25:20So is it for the Detroit Tigers because the Minnesota Twins already have gone on and taken a double header.
- 1:25:25And the situation is this, it puts Minnesota's percentage at 550.
- 1:25:31They're really wasting a dog fight these two teams for second place running, which is a considerable difference financially per player.
- 1:25:37According to tonight's action, the Twins were just a game and a half behind Detroit.
- 1:25:42In fact, right now they are tied with the Tigers pending the outcome of this ballgame.
- 1:25:48If Minnesota or if the Tigers should lose this game, the A's able to come from behind.
- 1:25:55Minnesota would be tied with Detroit.
- 1:25:57The only way the Tigers can stay ahead is to hang on here and get a win.
- 1:26:05So they're fighting hard for that second place money.
- 1:26:07The A's are fighting hard to nail down a victory. They must get one win in this series.
- 1:26:14The A's need only one win to nail down second place for sure.
- 1:26:19Washington and Boston both have finished their season.
- 1:26:22The Yankees could well end in the cellar.
- 1:26:24They're trailing over Chicago and the only way they could really stay healthy is by sweeping that series against the White Sox,
- 1:26:32something the Yankees don't figure to do against outstanding Chicago pitching.
- 1:26:37In tonight's ballgame, for example, they've been getting a rookie starter in Fred Clages with veterans Pizarro and Wilhelm relieving.
- 1:26:49Now this means that Eddie Snanky would have at his disposal Joe Harlan, and he would certainly have Gary Peters,
- 1:26:57and he might be able to come back with Tommy John.
- 1:26:59John pitched the other night on Wednesday night, but he will be able to come back on Sunday,
- 1:27:05so it'll be a tough task for Ralph Hobson.
- 1:27:08And if they do end up finishing in that spot in the cellar, it'll be the worst finish since the year 1912.
- 1:27:16Hank O'Garry is the new pitcher for Detroit. They have their A's it up, Mickey Lulich and Larry Shering the bullpen.
- 1:27:22Here's Jim Gosgur, the pitcher that goes to that side ball on.
- 1:27:25Gosgur hit a long home run in the sixth inning. He lined out hard to straightaway center in the fourth.
- 1:27:31He's one for three here tonight.
- 1:27:34His home run would have gone out of the Kansas City ballpark, maybe even over the Brooklyn Avenue wall.
- 1:27:38Here's the pitch. Here's a ground ball hit it right cut off for the second baseman Wood.
- 1:27:42He throws him out at first one away.
- 1:27:45So O'Garry gets his first man, and that brings up Ed Charles.
- 1:27:51Boy, you talk about some sloppy hits against Akers.
- 1:27:55The one that Willie Horton got started.
- 1:27:57Two strikes on him, a sidearm curve ball thrown way out over the plate, away from him.
- 1:28:02He reached out and one handed the ball in the left field.
- 1:28:06And Wood got one out in the right field, hitting the opposite direction, and the one by freehand really hurt.
- 1:28:11Here's a pitch to Ed Charles.
- 1:28:12Spag gets in there.
- 1:28:17Lowlitch a left-hander and Sherry a right-hander in the bullpen.
- 1:28:23Last home run Ed Charles hit this year was against the Tigers, Denny McClain in Kansas City.
- 1:28:28There's a curve. Charles chased it and missed it and cracked it.
- 1:28:31That ball went in the dirt.
- 1:28:33Ed was up there guessing on that one and guessed wrong.
- 1:28:41Charles has hit two home runs against Detroit this year, one here against McClain and one in Kansas City against McClain.
- 1:28:47That Tiger 20-game winner will be pitching tomorrow against Kansas City.
- 1:28:51Airtime 1.45 in Kansas City.
- 1:28:58Low balls, two strikes, one out, eighth inning. Tigers leading 5-4 in a thriller.
- 1:29:04Now the 0-2 pitch. Curve ball, swing and a foul out and Charles gritted his teeth on that one.
- 1:29:10Sherry got away with one. He hung a curve to Charles and he was guessing right that time, I'll guarantee you.
- 1:29:16Just hit over the top of it a little bit.
- 1:29:26No balls, two strikes.
- 1:29:29And to Sherry Fierce, way outside he wasted his ball one.
- 1:29:33The A's have finally come out with four runs in a game, which is the most they've been able to get for Odom all year.
- 1:29:38And they got him from Moon after he leaves the ball game.
- 1:29:43Here's a pitch. Curve and it's popped up in the shallow center.
- 1:29:47Ball's going to be trouble. Stanley going out, can't get it.
- 1:29:50Ed Charles dumps one in, in front of the center fielder and behind the second baseman.
- 1:29:56They were playing real deep for Charles and Ed gets his third hit of the ball game.
- 1:30:02That brings up Danny Kader, A's first baseman. Danny's had two hits.
- 1:30:08The A's have had nine hits in the game, the Tigers have had ten.
- 1:30:12Kansas City's had two home runs, Detroit has none.
- 1:30:17But the difference in the game is basing on balls as it so oftentimes is, that and errors.
- 1:30:24Odom walked four in the game and three of the four walks scored.
- 1:30:28But still, Odom gave up only three earned runs.
- 1:30:35Hank O'Garry now will pitch to Danny Kader.
- 1:30:40Tigers swing way around for Kader.
- 1:30:42Even in a double play situation, McCollum is playing deep and do his right.
- 1:30:47O'Garry's pitch, Kader takes it on the inside, ball one.
- 1:30:56West Dock and Joe Crescendo did fine jobs in relief for Odom,
- 1:30:59to keep the A's close enough that they were able to come back and tie it up at four all.
- 1:31:03Now gotta try to tie it again.
- 1:31:07O'Garry fires high and away to Kader, two balls and O strikes.
- 1:31:12Rick Mundy is on deck.
- 1:31:20The Athletics without Campanera since the sixth inning when he was kicked out of the game.
- 1:31:29To an O'Garry, Charles with a big lead at first.
- 1:31:31Here's a pitch, Kader takes one down, a shoot, a call, strike.
- 1:31:33It's two and one now.
- 1:31:36That was a good pitch by O'Garry.
- 1:31:43Kader straightens up at the plate, looks down to Luke Appling for a sign.
- 1:31:51Here's the pitch.
- 1:31:53Power ball outside of first.
- 1:31:56Down into the A's bullpen area.
- 1:31:58Norm Cash made a headlong dive trying to come up with that ball.
- 1:32:03Detroit five, Kansas City four, that's the score.
- 1:32:06The Athletics have 171 games and lost 86.
- 1:32:16The Tigers have 188 and lost 71.
- 1:32:21With only three to play counting this one.
- 1:32:24Two-two pitch to Kader.
- 1:32:26O'Garry won't be made right now as he steps off trying to catch Charles going.
- 1:32:31Thompson goes out of the A's dugout down to the bullpen.
- 1:32:36That time is called, Kader steps away from the plate.
- 1:32:41He's rechecking with Luke Appling who's coaching at third.
- 1:32:45Pitch, swinging, strike three.
- 1:32:48Kader chased one and hit the dirt.
- 1:32:51O'Garry records the second out of the eighth inning.
- 1:32:56That's eight Kansas City batters down on strikes tonight and here's Rick Monday coming up.
- 1:33:00Rick hasn't batted against left hand pitching up here very much.
- 1:33:05Earl Wilson struck him out twice and walked him once while he was in the game.
- 1:33:15Rick definitely has the power to reach the fence anywhere in the ballpark if he gets old to one.
- 1:33:23Ed Charles at first carrying the potential tying run of the game.
- 1:33:26This is the eighth inning. There goes Charles here to pitch. Monday swings and misses.
- 1:33:30Freehand throws the second.
- 1:33:31Too late Ed Charles isn't in there with a steal and he's hurt at second base I believe.
- 1:33:37Ed Charles swipes second base but he comes up grabbing his side.
- 1:33:42Billy Jones is running out there.
- 1:33:44Boy did he flatten out to get under that throw.
- 1:33:49Ed Charles has now stolen 12 bases this year.
- 1:33:54And he's only been thrown out one time all year long.
- 1:33:57Now the A's manager Alvin Dart has called Rick Monday back to the dugout.
- 1:34:03And he's going to pinch hit with Joe Natic.
- 1:34:10Ed Charles walking around down at second base.
- 1:34:15Boy he flattened out when he hit the ground and immediately grabbed that left side which he pulled over in Washington.
- 1:34:22Alvin doesn't want him to get out of the ballgame if he can help it.
- 1:34:27Boy he needs that guy in the game.
- 1:34:29Pando's gone into the Army.
- 1:34:32And to show the effects of not having Charles on the lineup the team's leading hitter as you know he lost five out of six ballgames all at home.
- 1:34:41Games that Charles in which he did not play.
- 1:34:44And here tonight in his very first game back in nearly two weeks he's gone three for four.
- 1:34:50Here's Joe Natic coming up to pinch hit for Rick Monday.
- 1:34:53Alvin left Monday in there knowing he was going to have Charles steal.
- 1:34:58And he wanted to help the runners by having the left-handed batter stand in there.
- 1:35:01It's a little harder for a catcher to get the ball and throw over a left-handed batter.
- 1:35:08All right Charles did it second. A base hit could tie it up.
- 1:35:10Here's a flick to Natic.
- 1:35:11Curve ball lined to left field base hit.
- 1:35:13Charles rounding third.
- 1:35:14He touches the bag.
- 1:35:15He's heading home.
- 1:35:16Harden throws to the plate.
- 1:35:17Two late and the ballgames all tied up.
- 1:35:20Joe Natic cuts through again.
- 1:35:25And Natic has knocked in three runs with his last two base hits.
- 1:35:29His batting average now is up around the 260 mark.
- 1:35:32It was 257 going into this one.
- 1:35:36A big base hit for Natic and the Swing and A's are back in business thanks to a timely stolen base by Ed Charles.
- 1:35:42A timely bench hit by Joe Natic.
- 1:35:47More than Alvin Dark is really operating here tonight.
- 1:35:50And now here's Dick Green.
- 1:35:54Green can get hold of one now and give the A's the lead.
- 1:36:02Here's a throw to first base Natic back in there in front of you time ahead of the throw.
- 1:36:09Gary sets and fires a curve ball.
- 1:36:12The green is in there for a call of strikes.
- 1:36:17Another thing in favor of Natic too, fans probably don't know, the guy's really been under the weather fighting a very severe chest cold.
- 1:36:24He got over in Baltimore.
- 1:36:26Sir, he's been pumped full of penicillin on this trip.
- 1:36:30He leads it first.
- 1:36:31Gary gives him a look.
- 1:36:33Bet you it's a Dick Green.
- 1:36:35High and outside, one ball and one strike.
- 1:36:38Joe's been quite worried about his brother Bill Natic who was the starting quarterback for the Kansas State football team against Army and was hit in the back with a hard tackle or block and is in the hospital at Kansas State University in the infirmary there.
- 1:36:53Probably listening in the game tonight.
- 1:36:55Joe certainly sends his best.
- 1:36:56Here's a pitch to Green.
- 1:36:57Curve ball, here's a drive hit pretty deep to left.
- 1:36:59It's way back, it's way back.
- 1:37:01It is going to home run.
- 1:37:10Dick Green tags them all as he hits a two run flat.
- 1:37:14His ninth home run of the year and the Athletics are leading again seven to five in the eighth inning.
- 1:37:21I'm chuckling at Gary.
- 1:37:23The A's love nothing better than getting out of this guy and Gary's had a miserable time all season against Kansas City.
- 1:37:30And he served up the golfer ball before the A's.
- 1:37:33They tag him hard and he gets real hot very quickly.
- 1:37:38When he's benched, Jack, he starts getting on him.
- 1:37:40Good to see Green swing the bat.
- 1:37:42Here's a pitch to Jack Aker.
- 1:37:44The A's pitcher swinging a foul ball strike.
- 1:37:47Green hits well in this ballpark too.
- 1:37:50This is a park he can definitely reach and he hits that one high and deep into the left center field seat.
- 1:37:56Now the pitch to Aker, outside one and one.
- 1:38:00Oh what a ball game.
- 1:38:01Fans I don't know about you but we're having the time of our life here tonight at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:38:06The A's and the Tigers in a Donnybrook and I mean a real one.
- 1:38:10Here's a pitch.
- 1:38:11Curve is in there.
- 1:38:12A call strike to Aker.
- 1:38:19Dark has had great success with pinch hitters in this ball game.
- 1:38:23Here's a one and two pitch, curved outside to Aker.
- 1:38:26The first pinch hitter he used was Larry Stahl.
- 1:38:29Stahl batting for Roof in the seventh inning,
- 1:38:31knocked in a run with a 415 foot blast to right center field.
- 1:38:35Here's a two-two pitch to Aker.
- 1:38:37Foul out of play.
- 1:38:39Right after Stahl hits that ball out into right center field and with a runner on, Dick Green, who had just singles.
- 1:38:47Alvin Dark reached down and brought up catcher Tim Thalsen and he unloaded one up into the right field seats for a two-run homer.
- 1:38:53Curve ball, Aker fouls it off.
- 1:38:56And then he pulls Joe Nasik off the bench with one strike on Monday and Nasik got a hit to knock in a run.
- 1:39:03So Alvin has gone to the bench three times tonight and all three men have had hits or RBI.
- 1:39:08There's a pitch fouled off.
- 1:39:11Two and two count.
- 1:39:20Nasik will stay in the game for Kansas City.
- 1:39:22He's out in the bullpen throwing the ball around with Monday leaving.
- 1:39:26Boy, that Monday made two great plays defensively tonight.
- 1:39:34Here's a Gary's two-two pitch to Aker.
- 1:39:37Swinging, strike three and down he goes.
- 1:39:40The catch, hang on and hold him for two innings to score Kansas City seven, Detroit five.
- 1:39:46The full broadcast of this game has been lost.
- 1:39:49The game finished with the Kansas City Athletics scoring one more run in the top of the ninth to win the game eight to five.
- 1:39:55The winning pitcher was Jack Aker who extended his season record to eight and four.
- 1:39:59And the loss went to Hank Aguirre who fell to three and nine every year.
