Transcript
- 0:23Thank you very much for being here. We're going
- 0:25to begin with a question from one of the members
- 0:28in our town hall. Each of you will have two minutes
- 0:30to respond to this question. Secretary Clinton,
- 0:32you won the coin toss, so you'll go first. Our
- 0:34first question comes from Patrice Brock. Patrice.
- 0:39Thank you and good evening. The last presidential
- 0:42debate could have been. Rated as ma mature audiences
- 0:46per TV parental guidelines knowing the educators
- 0:50assigned viewing the presidential debates of
- 0:52students homework Do you feel you're modeling
- 0:54appropriate and positive behavior for today's
- 0:57youth? Well, thank you. Are you a teacher? Yes,
- 1:01I think that that's a very good question because
- 1:04I've heard from lots of teachers and parents
- 1:07about some of their concerns about Some of the
- 1:10things that are being said and done in this campaign.
- 1:14And I think it is very important for us to make
- 1:17clear to our children that our country really
- 1:22is great because we're good. And we are going
- 1:26to respect one another, lift each other up. We
- 1:30are going to be looking for ways to celebrate
- 1:33our diversity. And we are going to try to reach
- 1:38out to every boy and girl as well as every adult.
- 1:41to bring them in to working on behalf of our
- 1:44country. I have a very positive and optimistic
- 1:47view about what we can do together. That's why
- 1:50the slogan of my campaign is Stronger Together.
- 1:53Because I think if we work together... If we
- 1:55overcome the divisiveness that sometimes sets
- 1:59Americans against one another, and instead we
- 2:03make some big goals, and I've set forth some
- 2:05big goals, getting the economy to work for everyone,
- 2:08not just those at the top, making sure that we
- 2:11have the best education system from preschool
- 2:14through college, and making it affordable, and
- 2:17so much else. If we set those goals and we go
- 2:21together to try to achieve them, there's nothing,
- 2:24in my opinion. that America can't do. So that's
- 2:27why I hope that we will come together in this
- 2:30campaign. Obviously, I'm hoping to earn your
- 2:33vote. I'm hoping to be elected in November. And
- 2:37I can promise you, I will work with every American.
- 2:40I want to be the president for all Americans,
- 2:42regardless of your political beliefs, where you
- 2:45come from, what you look like, your religion.
- 2:47I want us to heal our country and bring it together.
- 2:51because that's i think the best way for us to
- 2:53get the future that our children and our grandchildren
- 2:55deserve secretary clinton thank you mr trump
- 2:58you have two minutes well i actually agree with
- 3:00that i agree with everything she said i began
- 3:04this campaign because i was so tired of seeing
- 3:08such foolish things happen to our country this
- 3:12is a great country this is a great land i've
- 3:15gotten to know the people of the country over
- 3:17the last year and a half that i've been doing
- 3:20this as a politician i cannot believe i'm saying
- 3:23that about myself but i guess i have been a politician
- 3:25and my whole concept was to make america great
- 3:29again when i watch the deals being made when
- 3:33i watch what's happening with some horrible things
- 3:36like obamacare where your health insurance and
- 3:39health care is going up by numbers that are astronomical
- 3:4268 59 71 When I look at the Iran deal and how
- 3:49bad a deal it is for us, it's a one -sided transaction
- 3:52where we're giving back $150 billion to a terrorist
- 3:56state, really the number one terrorist state.
- 3:58We've made them a strong country from really
- 4:01a very weak country just three years ago. When
- 4:04I look at all of the things that I see and all
- 4:06of the potential that our country has, we have
- 4:08such tremendous potential, whether it's in business
- 4:12and trade where we're doing so badly. Last year,
- 4:15we had an almost $800 billion trade deficit.
- 4:19In other words, trading with other countries,
- 4:21we had an $800 billion deficit. It's hard to
- 4:25believe. Inconceivable. You say, who's making
- 4:28these deals? We're going to make great trade
- 4:30deals. We're going to have a strong border. We're
- 4:32going to bring back law and order. Just today,
- 4:35policemen were shot, two killed. And this is
- 4:39happening on a weekly basis. We have to bring
- 4:42back. respect to law enforcement. At the same
- 4:46time, we have to take care of people on all sides.
- 4:48We need justice. But I want to do things that
- 4:52haven't been done, including fixing and making
- 4:54our inner cities better for the African -American
- 4:56citizens that are so great and for the Latinos,
- 5:00Hispanics. And I look forward to doing it. It's
- 5:03called Make America Great Again. Thank you, Mr.
- 5:07Trump. The question from Patrice was about, are
- 5:10you both modeling positive and appropriate behaviors
- 5:12for today's youth? We received a lot of questions
- 5:15online, Mr. Trump, about the tape that was released
- 5:17on Friday, as you can imagine. You called what
- 5:19you said locker room banter. You described kissing
- 5:21women without consent, grabbing their genitals.
- 5:24That is sexual assault. You bragged that you
- 5:27have sexually assaulted women. Do you understand
- 5:29that? No, I didn't say that at all. I don't think
- 5:31you understood what was said. This was locker
- 5:34room talk. I'm not proud of it. I apologize to
- 5:38my family. I apologize to the American people.
- 5:40Certainly, I'm not proud of it. But this is locker
- 5:43room talk. You know, when we have a world where
- 5:46you have ISIS chopping off heads, where you have,
- 5:49and frankly, drowning people in steel cages,
- 5:51where you have wars and horrible, horrible sights
- 5:55all over, where you have so many bad things happening.
- 5:58This is like medieval times. We haven't seen
- 6:00anything like this, the carnage all over the
- 6:02world. And they look and they see. Can you imagine
- 6:05the people? that are, frankly, doing so well
- 6:09against us with ISIS. And they look at our country
- 6:12and they see what's going on. Yes, I'm very embarrassed
- 6:15by it. I hate it. But it's locker room talk.
- 6:18And it's one of those things. I will knock the
- 6:21hell out of ISIS. We're going to defeat ISIS.
- 6:24ISIS happened a number of years ago in a vacuum
- 6:28that was left because of bad judgment. And I
- 6:31will tell you, I will take care of ISIS. And
- 6:34we should get on to much more. important things
- 6:37and much bigger things. Just for the record,
- 6:39though, are you saying that what you said on
- 6:41that bus 11 years ago, that you did not actually
- 6:43kiss women without consent or grope women without
- 6:46consent? I have great respect for women. Nobody
- 6:48has more respect for women than I do. So for
- 6:51the record, you're saying you never did that?
- 6:52I said things that, frankly, you hear these things
- 6:55are said. And I was embarrassed by it, but I
- 6:58have tremendous respect for women. Have you ever
- 7:00done those things? And women have respect for
- 7:02me. And I will tell you, no, I have not. And
- 7:05I will tell you that I'm going to make our country
- 7:07safe. We're going to have borders on our country,
- 7:09which we don't have now. People are pouring into
- 7:11our country and they're coming in from the Middle
- 7:14East and other places. We're going to make America
- 7:16safe again. We're going to make America great
- 7:18again, but we're going to make America safe again.
- 7:20And we're going to make America wealthy again,
- 7:22because if you don't do that. It just sounds
- 7:25harsh to say, but we have to build up the wealth
- 7:29of our nation. Thank you, Mr. Trump. Right now,
- 7:30other nations are taking our jobs and they're
- 7:32taking our wealth. Thank you, Mr. Trump. And
- 7:33that's what I want to talk about. Secretary Clinton,
- 7:35do you want to respond? Well, like everyone else,
- 7:39I've spent a lot of time thinking over the last
- 7:4148 hours about what we heard and saw. You know,
- 7:47with prior Republican nominees for president,
- 7:51I disagreed with them. politics policies principles
- 7:55but i never questioned their fitness to serve
- 7:59donald trump is different i said starting back
- 8:04in june that he was not fit to be president and
- 8:08commander -in -chief and many republicans and
- 8:12independents have said the same thing what we
- 8:17all saw and heard on friday was donald talking
- 8:22about women what he thinks about women what he
- 8:26does to women. And he has said that the video
- 8:30doesn't represent who he is. But I think it's
- 8:35clear to anyone who heard it that it represents
- 8:38exactly who he is. Because we've seen this throughout
- 8:42the campaign. We have seen him insult women.
- 8:47We've seen him rate women on their appearance,
- 8:51ranking them from 1 to 10. We've seen him embarrass
- 8:56women on TV and on Twitter. We saw him, after
- 9:00the first debate, spend nearly a week denigrating
- 9:04a former Miss Universe in the harshest, most
- 9:07personal terms. So, yes, this is who Donald Trump
- 9:12is. But it's not only women, and it's not only
- 9:16this video that raises questions about his fitness
- 9:20to be our president, immigrants, African Americans,
- 9:28Latinos, people with disabilities, POWs, Muslims,
- 9:33and so many others. So this is who Donald Trump
- 9:37is. And the question for us, the question our
- 9:40country must answer, is that this is not who
- 9:45we are. That's why, to go back to your question,
- 9:50I want to send a message, we all should, to every
- 9:54boy and girl, and indeed to the entire world.
- 9:57That America already is great, but we are great
- 10:00because we are good. And we will respect one
- 10:04another. And we will work with one another. And
- 10:07we will celebrate our diversity. These are very
- 10:11important values to me because this is the America
- 10:14that I know and love. And I can pledge to you
- 10:18tonight that this is the America that I will
- 10:21serve if I'm so fortunate enough to become your
- 10:24president. And we want to get to some questions
- 10:27from online. Well, am I allowed to respond to
- 10:29that? I assume I am. Yes, you can respond to
- 10:31that. It's just words, folks. It's just words.
- 10:36Those words, I've been hearing them for many
- 10:37years. I heard them when they were running for
- 10:42the Senate in New York, where Hillary was going
- 10:44to bring back jobs to upstate New York, and she
- 10:47failed. I've heard them where Hillary is constantly
- 10:50talking about the inner cities of our country,
- 10:53which are a disaster. education -wise, job -wise,
- 10:58safety -wise, in every way possible. I'm going
- 11:02to help the African -Americans. I'm going to
- 11:04help the Latinos, Hispanics. I am going to help
- 11:07the inner cities. She's done a terrible job for
- 11:11the African -Americans. She wants their vote,
- 11:13and she does nothing. And then she comes back
- 11:15four years later. We saw that firsthand when
- 11:18she was a United States senator. She campaigned.
- 11:21Mr. Trump, I want to get to audience questions
- 11:25and online questions. So she's allowed to do
- 11:28that, but I'm not allowed to respond. You're
- 11:29going to get to respond right now. That sounds
- 11:32fair. This tape is generating intense interest.
- 11:35In just 48 hours, it's become the single most
- 11:37talked about story of the entire 2016 election
- 11:41on Facebook, with millions and millions of people
- 11:45discussing it on the social network. As we said
- 11:48a moment ago, we do want to bring in questions
- 11:50from voters around the country via social media.
- 11:53And our first stays on this topic. Jeff from
- 11:56Ohio asks on Facebook, Trump says the campaign
- 12:00has changed him. When did that happen? So, Mr.
- 12:04Trump, let me add to that. When you walked off
- 12:06that bus at age 59, were you a different man
- 12:10or did that behavior continue until just recently?
- 12:14And you have two minutes for this. As I told
- 12:16you, that was locker room talk. I'm not proud
- 12:19of it. I am a person who has great respect for
- 12:23people, for my family, for the people of this
- 12:26country. And certainly I'm not proud of it. But
- 12:29that was something that happened. If you look
- 12:32at Bill Clinton, far worse, minor words, and
- 12:36his was action. His was what he's done to women.
- 12:39There's never been anybody in the history of
- 12:41politics in this nation that's been so abusive
- 12:44to women so you can say any way you want to say
- 12:48it but bill clinton was abusive to women hillary
- 12:52clinton attacked those same women and attacked
- 12:55them viciously four of them here tonight one
- 12:58of the women who is a wonderful woman at 12 years
- 13:02old was raped at 12. her client she represented
- 13:08got him off And she's seen laughing on two separate
- 13:11occasions, laughing at the girl who was raped.
- 13:14Kathy Shelton, that young woman, is here with
- 13:17us tonight. So don't tell me about words. I am
- 13:22absolutely, I apologize for those words. But
- 13:26it is things that people say. But what President
- 13:30Clinton did, he was impeached. He lost his license
- 13:33to practice law. He had to pay an $850 ,000.
- 13:38dollar fine to one of the women paula jones who's
- 13:41also here tonight and i will tell you that when
- 13:45hillary brings up a point like that and she talks
- 13:48about words that i said 11 years ago i think
- 13:53it's disgraceful and i think she should be ashamed
- 13:55of herself if you want to know the truth can
- 13:59we please hold the applause secretary clinton
- 14:03you have two minutes well first let me start
- 14:07by saying That's so much of what he's just said
- 14:10is not right. But he gets to run his campaign
- 14:12any way he chooses. He gets to decide what he
- 14:15wants to talk about. Instead of answering people's
- 14:18questions, talking about our agenda, laying out
- 14:21the plans that we have that we think can make
- 14:24a better life and a better country, that's his
- 14:28choice. When I hear something like that, I am
- 14:31reminded of what my friend Michelle Obama advised
- 14:35us all. When they go low, you go high look if
- 14:46this were just about one video maybe what he's
- 14:50saying tonight would be understandable but everyone
- 14:55can draw their own conclusions at this point
- 14:58about whether or not the man in the video or
- 15:01the man on the stage respects women but he never
- 15:04apologizes for anything to anyone he never apologized
- 15:09to mr and mrs khan the gold star family whose
- 15:15son, Captain Khan, died in the line of duty in
- 15:18Iraq. And Donald insulted and attacked them for
- 15:23weeks over their religion. He never apologized
- 15:28to the distinguished federal judge who was born
- 15:32in Indiana. But Donald said he couldn't be trusted
- 15:36to be a judge because his parents were, quote,
- 15:40Mexican. He never apologized to the reporter.
- 15:44that he mimicked and mocked on national television
- 15:47and our children were watching. And he never
- 15:50apologized for the racist lie that President
- 15:54Obama was not born in the United States of America.
- 15:58He owes the president an apology. He owes our
- 16:01country an apology. And he needs to take responsibility
- 16:05for his actions and his words. Well, you owe
- 16:10the president an apology because, as you know
- 16:12very well, uh your campaign sydney blumenthal
- 16:16he's another real winner that you have and he's
- 16:19the one that got this started along with your
- 16:21campaign manager and they were on television
- 16:23just two weeks ago she was saying exactly that
- 16:27so you really owe him an apology you're the one
- 16:29that sent the pictures around your campaign sent
- 16:32the pictures around with president obama in a
- 16:34certain garb that was long before i was ever
- 16:36involved so you actually owe an apology number
- 16:39two michelle obama i've gotten to see the commercials
- 16:44that they did on you and i've gotten to see some
- 16:48of the most vicious commercials i've ever seen
- 16:50of michelle obama talking about you hillary so
- 16:55you talk about friend go back and take a look
- 16:58at those commercials a race where you lost fair
- 17:02and square unlike the bernie sanders race where
- 17:05you won but not fair and square in my opinion
- 17:09And all you have to do is take a look at WikiLeaks
- 17:11and just see what they said about Bernie Sanders
- 17:13and see what Deborah Wasserman Schultz had in
- 17:16mind. Because Bernie Sanders, between superdelegates
- 17:20and Deborah Wasserman Schultz, he never had a
- 17:21chance. And I was so surprised to see him sign
- 17:24on with the devil. But when you talk about apology,
- 17:28I think the one that you should really be apologizing
- 17:31for and the thing that you should be apologizing
- 17:33for are the 33 ,000 emails that you deleted.
- 17:38and that you acid washed and then the two boxes
- 17:41of emails and other things last week that were
- 17:45taken from an office and are now missing and
- 17:47i'll tell you what i didn't think i'd say this
- 17:50but i'm going to say it and i hate to say it
- 17:53but if i win i am going to instruct my attorney
- 17:57general to get a special prosecutor to look into
- 18:02your situation because there has never been so
- 18:05many lies so much deception there has never been
- 18:09anything like it and we're going to have a special
- 18:11prosecutor when i speak i go out and speak the
- 18:15people of this country are furious in my opinion
- 18:18the people that have been long -term workers
- 18:21at the fbi are furious there has never been anything
- 18:24like this where emails and you get a subpoena
- 18:27you get a subpoena and after getting the subpoena
- 18:30you delete 33 000 emails and then you acid wash
- 18:34them or bleach them as you would say a very expensive
- 18:36process So we're going to get a special prosecutor,
- 18:40and we're going to look into it. Because you
- 18:42know what? People have been, their lives have
- 18:45been destroyed for doing one -fifth of what you've
- 18:48done. And it's a disgrace. And honestly, you
- 18:50ought to be ashamed of yourself. Secretary Clinton,
- 18:52I want to follow up on that. I'm going to let
- 18:54you talk about it now. Because everything he
- 18:56just said is absolutely false, but I'm not surprised.
- 18:59In the first debate... In the first debate, I
- 19:03told people that it would be impossible to be
- 19:06fact -checking Donald all the time. I'd never
- 19:08get to talk about anything I want to do and how
- 19:11we're going to really make lives better for people.
- 19:14So, once again, go to HillaryClinton .com. We
- 19:18have literally Trump. You can fact -check him
- 19:20in real time. Last time, at the first debate,
- 19:25we had millions of people. fact -checking so
- 19:27I expect we'll have millions more fact -checking
- 19:30because you know it is it's just awfully good
- 19:34that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump
- 19:37is not in charge of the law in our country because
- 19:40you'd be in jail secretary Clinton we want to
- 19:48remind the audience to please not talk out loud
- 19:53please do not applaud you're just wasting time
- 19:55And Secretary Clinton, I do want to follow up
- 19:57on emails. You've said your handling of your
- 19:59emails was a mistake. You disagreed with FBI
- 20:02Director James Comey calling your handling of
- 20:05classified information, quote, extremely careless.
- 20:08The FBI said that there were 110 classified emails
- 20:11that were exchanged, eight of which were top
- 20:14secret, and that it was possible hostile actors
- 20:17did gain access to those emails. You don't call
- 20:20that extremely careless? Well, Martha, first
- 20:22let me say, and I've said it before, but I'll
- 20:25repeat it because I want everyone to hear it.
- 20:26That was a mistake, and I take responsibility
- 20:29for using a personal email account. Obviously,
- 20:34if I were to do it over again, I would not. I'm
- 20:37not making any excuses. It was a mistake, and
- 20:40I am very sorry about that. But I think it's
- 20:43also important to point out where... there are
- 20:48some misleading accusations from critics and
- 20:52others. After a year -long investigation, there
- 20:56is no evidence that anyone hacked the server
- 21:00I was using, and there is no evidence that anyone
- 21:04can point to at all, anyone who says otherwise
- 21:08has no basis, that any classified material ended
- 21:12up in the wrong hands. I take classified materials
- 21:14very seriously. and always have when i was on
- 21:18the senate armed services committee i was privy
- 21:21to a lot of classified material obviously as
- 21:24secretary of state i had some of the most important
- 21:28secrets that we possess such as going after bin
- 21:32laden so i am very committed to taking classified
- 21:36information seriously and as i said there is
- 21:39no evidence uh that any classified information
- 21:42ended up in the wrong hands okay we're going
- 21:45to move on and yet She didn't know the word the
- 21:48letter C on a document Right. She didn't even
- 21:51know what that word what that letter meant, you
- 21:54know, it's amazing I'm watching Hillary go over
- 21:57facts and she's going after fact after fact and
- 22:00she's lying again because she said she You know
- 22:04what she did with the emails was fine. You think
- 22:05it was fine to delete 33 ,000 emails. I don't
- 22:08think so She said the 33 ,000 emails had to do
- 22:11with her daughter's wedding number one and a
- 22:14yoga class well maybe we'll give three or three
- 22:16or four or five or something 33 000 emails deleted
- 22:19and now she's saying there wasn't anything wrong
- 22:22and more importantly that was after getting a
- 22:24subpoena that wasn't before that was after she
- 22:27got it from the united states congress and i'll
- 22:29be honest i am so disappointed in congressmen
- 22:32including republicans for allowing this to happen
- 22:37our Justice Department where her husband goes
- 22:39on to the back of an airplane for 39 minutes
- 22:42talks to the Attorney General days before a ruling
- 22:44is going to be made on her case but for you to
- 22:47say that there was nothing wrong with you deleting
- 22:5239 ,000 emails again you should be ashamed of
- 22:56yourself what you did and this is after getting
- 22:58a subpoena from the United States Congress. We
- 23:01have to move on. Secretary Clinton, you can respond,
- 23:03and then we've got to move on. We want to give
- 23:04the audience a chance here. Let alone after getting
- 23:08a subpoena from the United States Congress. Secretary
- 23:10Clinton, you can respond, and then we have to
- 23:11move on to an audience question. Look, it's just
- 23:14not true, and so please go to... Oh, you didn't
- 23:17delete them? Allow her to respond, please. Personal
- 23:19e -mails, not official. 33 ,000? Well, we turned
- 23:22over 35 ,000, so it was... What about the other
- 23:2515 ,000? Please allow her to respond. She didn't
- 23:27talk while you talked. Yes, that's true. I didn't.
- 23:30Because you have nothing to say. I didn't in
- 23:32the first debate and I'm going to try not to
- 23:34in this debate because I'd like to get to the
- 23:37questions that the people have brought here tonight
- 23:39to talk to us about. And get off this question.
- 23:44Okay, Donald, I know you're into big diversion
- 23:47tonight, anything to avoid talking about your
- 23:49campaign and the way it's exploding and the way
- 23:51Republicans are leaving you, but let's at least
- 23:54focus on some of the issues that people care
- 23:58about tonight. Let's get to their question. We
- 24:00have a question here from Ken Karpowitz. He has
- 24:02a question about health care. Ken? I'd like to
- 24:04know, Anderson, why aren't you bringing up the
- 24:06e -mails? I'd like to know. We brought up the
- 24:08e -mails. No, it hasn't. It hasn't. And it hasn't
- 24:10been finished at all. Ken Carpowitz has a question.
- 24:14It's nice to one -on -three. Thank you. Affordable
- 24:17Care Act, known as Obamacare, it is not affordable.
- 24:23Premiums have gone up. Deductibles have gone
- 24:25up. Co -pays have gone up. Prescriptions have
- 24:29gone up. And the coverage has gone down. What
- 24:32will you do to bring the costs down and make
- 24:36coverage better? That first one goes to Secretary
- 24:39Clinton because you started out the last one
- 24:41to the audience. If he wants to start, he can
- 24:43start. No, go ahead, Donald. No, I'm a gentleman,
- 24:46Hillary. Go ahead. Secretary Clinton? Well, I
- 24:51think Donald was about to say he's going to solve
- 24:53it by repealing it and getting rid of the Affordable
- 24:57Care Act. And I'm going to fix it, because I
- 25:00agree with you. Premiums have gotten too high,
- 25:02co -pays, deductibles, prescription drug costs.
- 25:05And I've laid out a series of actions that we
- 25:08can take to try to get those costs down. But
- 25:11here's what I don't want people to forget when
- 25:13we're talking about reining in the cost, which
- 25:16has to be the highest priority of the next president.
- 25:20When the Affordable Care Act passed, it wasn't
- 25:22just that 20 million people got insurance who
- 25:25didn't have it before, but that in and of itself
- 25:27was a good thing. I meet these people all the
- 25:29time, and they tell me what a difference having
- 25:32that insurance meant to them and their families.
- 25:35But everybody else, the 170 million of us, who
- 25:40get health insurance through our employers got
- 25:44big benefits. Number one, insurance companies
- 25:46can't deny you coverage because of a pre -existing
- 25:49condition. Number two, no lifetime limits, which
- 25:54is a big deal if you have serious health problems.
- 25:57Number three, women can't be charged more than
- 26:00men for our health insurance, which is the way
- 26:02it used to be before the Affordable Care Act.
- 26:05Number four, If you're under 26 and your parents
- 26:08have a policy, you can be on that policy until
- 26:12the age of 26, something that didn't happen before.
- 26:15So I want very much to save what works and is
- 26:19good about the Affordable Care Act. But we've
- 26:22got to get costs down. We've got to provide some
- 26:24additional help to small businesses so that they
- 26:27can afford to provide health insurance. But if
- 26:31we repeal it, as Donald has proposed, and start
- 26:34over again, All of those benefits I just mentioned
- 26:38are lost to everybody, not just people who get
- 26:42their health insurance on the exchange. And then
- 26:44we would have to start all over again. Right
- 26:47now, we are at 90 percent health insurance coverage.
- 26:50That's the highest we've ever been in our country.
- 26:53So I want us to get to 100 percent, but get costs
- 26:56down and keep quality up. Mr. Trump, you have
- 26:59two minutes. It is such a great question, and
- 27:02it's maybe the question I get almost more than
- 27:05anything else outside of defense. Obamacare is
- 27:09a disaster. You know it. We all know it. It's
- 27:13going up at numbers that nobody's ever seen worldwide.
- 27:17Nobody's ever seen numbers like this for health
- 27:19care. It's only getting worse. In 17, it implodes
- 27:23by itself. Their method of fixing it is to go
- 27:26back and ask Congress for more money, more and
- 27:28more money. We have right now almost $20 trillion
- 27:31in debt. Obamacare will never work. It's very
- 27:35bad, very bad health insurance, far too expensive,
- 27:40and not only expensive for the person that has
- 27:42it, unbelievably expensive for our country. It's
- 27:45going to be one of the biggest line items very
- 27:48shortly. We have to repeal it and replace it
- 27:52with something absolutely much less expensive
- 27:56and something that works where your plan can
- 27:59actually be tailored we have to get rid of the
- 28:02lines around the state artificial lines where
- 28:04we stop insurance companies from coming in and
- 28:07competing because they wanted President Obama
- 28:10and whoever was working on it they want to leave
- 28:13those lines because that gives the insurance
- 28:14companies essentially monopolies we want competition
- 28:18you will have the finest health care plan there
- 28:22is. She wants to go to a single -payer plan,
- 28:24which would be a disaster, somewhat similar to
- 28:27Canada. And if you ever notice, the Canadians,
- 28:29when they need a big operation, when something
- 28:31happens, they come into the United States in
- 28:33many cases because their system is so slow. It's
- 28:38catastrophic in certain ways. But she wants to
- 28:41go to single -payer, which means the government
- 28:43basically rules everything. Hillary Clinton has
- 28:47been after this for years. Obamacare was the
- 28:50first step. Obamacare is a total disaster. And
- 28:54not only are your rates going up by numbers that
- 28:57nobody's ever believed, but your deductibles
- 29:00are going up. So that unless you get hit by a
- 29:03truck, you're never going to be able to use it.
- 29:05It is a disastrous plan and it has to be repealed.
- 29:09and replaced secretary clinton let me follow
- 29:11up with you your husband called obamacare quote
- 29:13the craziest thing in the world saying that small
- 29:15business owners are getting killed as premiums
- 29:17double coverage is cut in half was he mistaken
- 29:20or was his mistake simply telling the truth no
- 29:22i mean he clarified what he meant and it's very
- 29:25clear look we are in a situation in our country
- 29:28where if we were to start all over again we might
- 29:32come up with a different But we have an employer
- 29:35-based system. That's where the vast majority
- 29:37of people get their health care. And the Affordable
- 29:40Care Act was meant to try to fill the gap between
- 29:44people who were too poor and couldn't put together
- 29:48any resources to afford health care, namely people
- 29:51on Medicaid, obviously Medicare, which is a single
- 29:54-payer system, which takes care of our elderly
- 29:57and does a great job doing it, by the way, and
- 30:00then all the people who were employed. but people
- 30:03who were working but didn't have the money to
- 30:05afford insurance and didn't have anybody, an
- 30:08employer or anybody else, to help them. That
- 30:11was the slot that the Obamacare approach was
- 30:15to take. And like I say, 20 million people now
- 30:18have health insurance. So if we just rip it up
- 30:21and throw it away, what Donald's not telling
- 30:23you is we just turn it back to the insurance
- 30:25companies the way it used to be. And that means
- 30:28the insurance companies get to do pretty much
- 30:30whatever they want, including... saying, look,
- 30:32I'm sorry, you've got diabetes, you had cancer,
- 30:35your child has asthma. Your time is up. You may
- 30:37not be able to have insurance because you can't
- 30:40afford it. So let's fix what's broken about it,
- 30:43but let's not throw it away and give it all back
- 30:46to the insurance companies and the drug companies.
- 30:47Let me follow up with you, Mr. Trump. That's
- 30:49not going to work. Mr. Trump, let me follow up
- 30:50on this. I just wanted just one thing. First
- 30:52of all, Hillary, everything's broken about it,
- 30:54everything. Number two. Bernie Sanders said that
- 30:57Hillary Clinton has very bad judgment. This is
- 30:59a perfect example of it, trying to save Obamacare,
- 31:02which is... You've said you want to end Obamacare.
- 31:05You've also said you want to make coverage accessible
- 31:08for people with pre -existing conditions. How
- 31:10do you force insurance companies to do that?
- 31:13if you're no longer mandating that every American
- 31:14get insurance? We're going to be able to. You're
- 31:15going to have plans. What does that mean? Well,
- 31:17I'll tell you what it means. You're going to
- 31:19have plans that are so good because we're going
- 31:21to have so much competition in the insurance
- 31:23industry once we break out the lines and allow
- 31:27the competition to come. Are you going to have
- 31:30a mandate that Americans have to have health
- 31:32insurance? President Obama, by keeping those
- 31:35lines, the boundary lines around each state,
- 31:37and it was almost gone. until just very toward
- 31:40the end of the passage of Obamacare, which, by
- 31:44the way, was a fraud. You know that because Jonathan
- 31:47Gruber, the architect of Obamacare, was said
- 31:50he said it was a great lie. It was a big lie.
- 31:52President Obama said you keep your doctor, you
- 31:54keep your plan. The whole thing was a fraud and
- 31:56it doesn't work. But when we get rid of those
- 31:58lines, you have competition and we will be able
- 32:01to keep preexisting. We'll also be able to help
- 32:04people that can't get. don't have money, because
- 32:07we are going to have people protected. And Republicans
- 32:10feel this way, believe it or not, and strongly
- 32:12this way. We're going to block grant into the
- 32:15states. We're going to block grant into Medicaid
- 32:18into the states so that we will be able to take
- 32:21care of people without the necessary funds to
- 32:23take care of themselves. Thank you, Mr. Trump.
- 32:25We now go to Gorba Hamid with a question for
- 32:28both candidates. Hi. There are 3 .3 million Muslims
- 32:33in the United States, and I'm one of them. You've
- 32:36mentioned working with Muslim nations, but with
- 32:39Islamophobia on the rise, how will you help people
- 32:42like me deal with the consequences of being labeled
- 32:45as a threat to the country after the election
- 32:47is over? Mr. Trump, you're first. Well, you're
- 32:51right about Islamophobia, and that's a shame.
- 32:54But one thing we have to do is we have to make
- 32:58sure that, because there is a problem. I mean,
- 33:01whether we like it or not, and we can be very
- 33:03politically correct. But whether we like it or
- 33:05not, there is a problem. And we have to be sure
- 33:08that Muslims come in and report when they see
- 33:12something going on. When they see hatred going
- 33:14on, they have to report it. As an example, in
- 33:16San Bernardino, many people saw the bombs all
- 33:19over the apartment of the two people that killed
- 33:2114 and wounded many, many people. Horribly wounded.
- 33:24They'll never be the same. Muslims have to report
- 33:28the problems when they see them. You know, there's
- 33:34always a reason for everything. If they don't
- 33:37do that, it's a very difficult situation for
- 33:40our country. Because you look at Orlando, and
- 33:43you look at San Bernardino, and you look at the
- 33:45World Trade Center, go outside, you look at Paris,
- 33:47look at that horrible... These are radical Islamic
- 33:50terrorists. And Xi won't even mention the word,
- 33:54and nor will President Obama. He won't use the
- 33:57term radical Islamic terrorism. Now, to solve
- 34:01a problem... You have to be able to state what
- 34:04the problem is, or at least say the name. She
- 34:07won't say the name, and President Obama won't
- 34:09say the name. But the name is there. It's radical
- 34:12Islamic terror. And before you solve it, you
- 34:16have to say the name. Secretary Clinton. Well,
- 34:20thank you for asking your question. And I've
- 34:22heard this question from a lot of Muslim Americans
- 34:25across our country. Because, unfortunately, there's
- 34:30been a lot of very divisive, dark things said
- 34:36about Muslims. And even someone like Captain
- 34:39Khan, the young man who sacrificed himself defending
- 34:42our country in the United States Army, has been
- 34:46subject to attack by Donald. I want to say just
- 34:49a couple of things. First, we've had Muslims
- 34:51in America since George Washington. And we've
- 34:55had many successful Muslims. We just lost a particularly
- 35:00well -known one with Muhammad Ali. My vision
- 35:05of America is an America where everyone has a
- 35:09place. If you're willing to work hard, you do
- 35:12your part, you contribute to the community. That's
- 35:16what America is. That's what we want America
- 35:18to be for our children and our grandchildren.
- 35:21It's also very short -sighted and even dangerous
- 35:24to be engaging in the kind of demagogic rhetoric
- 35:27that Donald has about Muslims. We need American
- 35:30Muslims to be part of our eyes and ears, on our
- 35:34front lines. I've worked with a lot of different
- 35:37Muslim groups around America. I've met with a
- 35:40lot of them, and I've heard how important it
- 35:43is for them to feel that they are wanted and
- 35:45included and part of our country, part of our
- 35:49homeland security, and that's what I want to
- 35:52see. It's also important I intend to defeat ISIS.
- 35:56to do so in a coalition with majority muslim
- 35:59nations right now a lot of those nations are
- 36:03hearing what donald says and wondering why should
- 36:06we cooperate with the americans and this is a
- 36:09gift to isis and the terrorists violent jihadist
- 36:13terrorists we are not at war with islam and it
- 36:18is a mistake and it plays into the hands of the
- 36:20terrorists to act as though we are so i want
- 36:24a country where citizens like you and your family
- 36:28are just as welcome as anyone else. Thank you,
- 36:31Secretary Clinton. Mr. Trump, in December, you
- 36:33said this. Donald J. Trump is calling for a total
- 36:37and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the
- 36:39United States until our country's representatives
- 36:42can figure out what the hell is going on. We
- 36:45have no choice. We have no choice. Your running
- 36:49mate said this week that the Muslim ban is no
- 36:51longer your position. Is that correct? and if
- 36:55it is was it a mistake to have a religious test
- 36:58first of all captain khan is an american hero
- 37:01and if i were president at that time he would
- 37:05be alive today because unlike her who voted for
- 37:09the war without knowing what she was doing i
- 37:12would not have had our people in iraq iraq was
- 37:15a disaster so he would have been alive today
- 37:18the muslim ban is something that in some form
- 37:24has morphed into a extreme vetting from certain
- 37:28areas of the world. Hillary Clinton wants to
- 37:31allow... And why did it morph into that? No,
- 37:34answer the question. Do you still believe...
- 37:37Why do you interrupt her? You interrupt me all
- 37:38the time. Why don't you interrupt her? Would
- 37:40you please explain whether or not the Muslim
- 37:42ban still stands? It's called extreme vetting.
- 37:47We are going to areas like Syria where they're
- 37:50coming in by the... tens of thousands because
- 37:54of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton wants to
- 37:57allow a 550 % increase over Obama. People are
- 38:03coming into our country like we have no idea
- 38:06who they are, where they're from, what their
- 38:10feelings about our country is, and she wants
- 38:12550 % more. This is going to be the great Trojan
- 38:16horse of all time. We have enough problems in
- 38:19this country. I believe in building safe zones.
- 38:21I believe in having other people pay for them.
- 38:24As an example, the Gulf states, who are not carrying
- 38:26their weight, but they have nothing but money,
- 38:28and take care of people. But I don't want to
- 38:31have, with all the problems this country has
- 38:33and all of the problems that you see going on,
- 38:35hundreds of thousands of people coming in from
- 38:38Syria when we know nothing about them. We know
- 38:41nothing about their values, and we know nothing
- 38:43about their love for our country. And Secretary
- 38:46Clinton, let me ask you about that, because you
- 38:49have asked for an increase from 10 to 65 ,000
- 38:53Syrian refugees. We know you want tougher vetting.
- 38:57That's not a perfect system. So why take the
- 39:01risk of having those refugees come into the country?
- 39:04Well, first of all, I will not let anyone into
- 39:06our country that I think poses a risk to us.
- 39:10But there are a lot of refugees. women and children.
- 39:14Think of that picture we all saw of that four
- 39:16-year -old boy with the blood on his forehead
- 39:19because he'd been bombed by the Russian and Syrian
- 39:22air forces. There are children suffering in this
- 39:27catastrophic war, largely, I believe, because
- 39:31of Russian aggression. And we need to do our
- 39:36part. We by no means are carrying anywhere near
- 39:40the load that Europe and others are. But we will
- 39:43have vetting that is as tough as it needs to
- 39:47be from our professionals, our intelligence experts,
- 39:51and others. But it is important for us as a policy
- 39:57not to say, as Donald has said, we're going to
- 40:01ban people based on a religion. How do you do
- 40:05that? We are a country founded on religious freedom
- 40:08and liberty. How do we... do what he has advocated
- 40:13without causing great distress within our own
- 40:17country. Are we going to have religious tests
- 40:20when people fly into our country? And how do
- 40:24we expect to be able to implement those? So I
- 40:29thought that what he said was extremely unwise
- 40:33and even dangerous. And indeed, you can look
- 40:37at the propaganda on a lot of the terrorist sites.
- 40:40And what Donald Trump says about Muslims is used
- 40:45to recruit fighters because they want to create
- 40:51a war between us. And the final thing I would
- 40:54say, this is the 10th or 12th time that he's
- 40:56denied being for the war in Iraq. We have it
- 41:00on tape. The entire press corps has looked at
- 41:03it. It's been debunked, but it never stops him
- 41:05from saying whatever he wants to say. Has not
- 41:07been debunked. So, please. Has not been debunked.
- 41:10Go to HillaryClinton .com and you can see it.
- 41:12I was against the war in Iraq. Has not been debunked.
- 41:15And you voted for it and you shouldn't have.
- 41:18There's been lots of fact -checking on that.
- 41:20I'd like to move on to an online question. She
- 41:22just went about 25 seconds over her time. Could
- 41:25I just respond to this, please? Very quickly,
- 41:27please. Hillary Clinton. In terms of having people
- 41:31come into our country, we have many criminal
- 41:33illegal aliens. When we want to send them back
- 41:36to their country, their country says, we don't
- 41:38want them. In some cases, they're murderers,
- 41:40drug lords, drug problems. And they don't want
- 41:43them. And Hillary Clinton, when she was Secretary
- 41:45of State, said, that's OK. We can't force it
- 41:47into their country. Let me tell you, I'm going
- 41:49to force them right back into their country.
- 41:51They're murderers and some very bad people. And
- 41:54I will tell you very strongly. When Bernie Sanders
- 41:57said she had bad judgment, she has really bad
- 41:59judgment because we are letting people into this
- 42:02country that are going to cause problems and
- 42:04crime like you've never seen. We're also letting
- 42:06drugs pour through our southern border at a record
- 42:09clip, at a record clip, and it shouldn't be allowed
- 42:14to happen. ICE just endorsed me. They've never
- 42:17endorsed a presidential candidate. The Border
- 42:19Patrol agents, 16 ,500, just recently endorsed
- 42:23me. They endorse me because I understand the
- 42:27border. She doesn't. She wants amnesty for everybody.
- 42:30Come right in. Come right over. It's a horrible
- 42:33thing she's doing. She's got bad judgment and,
- 42:36honestly, so bad that she should never be president
- 42:39of the United States. That I can tell you. Thank
- 42:42you, Mr. Trump. I want to move on. This next
- 42:44question comes from the public. through the bipartisan
- 42:46open debate coalition's online forum where americans
- 42:50submitted questions that generated millions of
- 42:53votes this question involves wikileaks release
- 42:56of purported excerpts of secretary clinton's
- 42:59paid speeches which she has refused to release
- 43:02and one line in particular in which you secretary
- 43:05clinton purportedly say you need both a public
- 43:08and private position on certain issues so two
- 43:14from Virginia asks, is it okay for politicians
- 43:17to be two -faced? Is it acceptable for a politician
- 43:21to have a private stance on issues? Secretary
- 43:25Clinton, your two minutes. Right. As I recall,
- 43:28that was something I said about Abraham Lincoln
- 43:33after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg
- 43:38movie called Lincoln. It was a master class watching
- 43:43President Lincoln get the Congress to approve
- 43:47the 13th Amendment. It was principled and it
- 43:51was strategic. And I was making the point that
- 43:55it is hard sometimes to get the Congress to do
- 43:58what you want to do. And you have to keep working
- 44:01at it. And yes, President Lincoln was trying
- 44:05to... convinced some people, he used some arguments.
- 44:08Convincing other people, he used other arguments.
- 44:11That was a great, I thought, a great display
- 44:15of presidential leadership. But, you know, let's
- 44:18talk about what's really going on here, Martha,
- 44:20because our intelligence community just came
- 44:24out and said in the last few days that the Kremlin,
- 44:29meaning Putin and the Russian government, are
- 44:32directing the attacks the hacking on American
- 44:37accounts to influence our election and WikiLeaks
- 44:41as part of that as our other sites where the
- 44:45Russians hack information We don't even know
- 44:48if it's accurate information and then they put
- 44:51it out We have never in the history of our country
- 44:54been in a situation where an adversary a foreign
- 44:59power is working so hard to influence the outcome
- 45:03of the election. And believe me, they're not
- 45:06doing it to get me elected. They're doing it
- 45:08to try to influence the election for Donald Trump.
- 45:11Now, maybe because he has praised Putin, maybe
- 45:14because he says he agrees with a lot of what
- 45:17Putin wants to do, maybe because he wants to
- 45:19do business in Moscow. I don't know the reasons,
- 45:21but we deserve answers. And we should demand
- 45:25that Donald release all of his tax returns so
- 45:28that people can see what are the entanglements
- 45:32and the financial relationships that he has with
- 45:35Russians and other foreign powers. Well, I think
- 45:38I should respond because it's so ridiculous.
- 45:41Look, now she's blaming, she got caught in a
- 45:44total lie. Her papers went out to all her friends
- 45:47at the banks, Goldman Sachs, and everybody else.
- 45:49And she said things, WikiLeaks, that just came
- 45:52out. And she lied. Now she's blaming the lie
- 45:57on the late, great Abraham Lincoln. That's one
- 46:00that I have. OK, honest Abe. Honest Abe never
- 46:04lied. That's the good thing. That's the big difference
- 46:06between Abraham Lincoln and you. That's a big,
- 46:09big difference. We're talking about some difference.
- 46:12But as far as other elements of what she was
- 46:16saying, I don't know, Putin. I think it would
- 46:19be great if we got along with Russia, because
- 46:22we could fight ISIS together as an example. But
- 46:24I don't know, Putin. But I notice any time anything
- 46:26wrong happens, they like to say, the Russians,
- 46:29the Russians. He doesn't know if it's the Russians
- 46:31doing the hacking. Maybe there is no hacking.
- 46:34But they always blame Russia. And the reason
- 46:35they blame Russia is because they think they're
- 46:37trying to tarnish me with Russia. I know nothing
- 46:39about Russia. I know I know about Russia, but
- 46:42I know nothing about the inner workings of Russia.
- 46:44I don't deal there. I have no businesses that
- 46:46have no loans from Russia. I have a very, very
- 46:49great balance sheet. So great that when I did
- 46:51the old post office on Pennsylvania Avenue, the
- 46:54United States government, because of my balance
- 46:56sheet, which they actually know very well, chose
- 46:59me to do the old post office between the White
- 47:02House and Congress, chose me to do. the old post
- 47:06office one of the primary things in fact perhaps
- 47:08the primary thing was balance sheet but i have
- 47:11no loans with russia you could go to the united
- 47:14states government and they would probably tell
- 47:17you that because they know my sheet very well
- 47:19in order to get that development i had to have
- 47:21now the taxes are a very simple thing as soon
- 47:24as i have first of all i pay hundreds of millions
- 47:26of dollars in taxes many of our friends took
- 47:30bigger deductions. Warren Buffett took a massive
- 47:33deduction. Soros, who's a friend of hers, took
- 47:36a massive deduction. Many of the people that
- 47:38are giving her all this money, that she can do
- 47:40many more commercials than me, took massive deductions.
- 47:44I pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes,
- 47:47but as soon as my routine audit's finished, I'll
- 47:50release my returns. I'll be very proud to. Thank
- 47:53you, Mr. Trump. We're on a turn, actually, on
- 47:55the topic of taxes. We have a question from Spencer
- 47:57Moss. Spencer? good evening my question is what
- 48:06specific tax provisions will you change to ensure
- 48:08the wealthiest americans pay their fair share
- 48:11in taxes mr trump you have two minutes well one
- 48:13thing i do is get rid of carried interest the
- 48:15one of the greatest provisions for people like
- 48:18me to be honest with you i give up a lot when
- 48:21i run because i knock out the tax code and she
- 48:24could have done this years ago by the way she's
- 48:26a united states she was a united states senator
- 48:28she complains that donald trump took advantage
- 48:31of the tax code well Why didn't she change it?
- 48:33Why didn't you change it when you were a senator?
- 48:35The reason you didn't is that all your friends
- 48:37take the same advantage that I do. And I do.
- 48:39You have provisions in the tax code that, frankly,
- 48:42we could change. But you wouldn't change it because
- 48:44all of these people give you the money so you
- 48:47can take negative ads on Donald Trump. But...
- 48:51And I say that about a lot of things. You know,
- 48:52I've heard Hillary complaining about so many
- 48:55different things over the years. I wish you had
- 48:56done this. But she's been there for 30 years.
- 48:58She's been doing this stuff. She never changed
- 49:00and she never will change. She never will change.
- 49:04We're getting rid of carried interest provisions.
- 49:06I'm lowering taxes, actually, because I think
- 49:08it's so important for corporations because we
- 49:10have corporations leaving massive corporations
- 49:12and little ones. Little ones can't form. We're
- 49:15getting rid of regulations, which goes hand in
- 49:17hand with the lowering of the taxes. But we're
- 49:19bringing the tax rate down from 35 % to 15%.
- 49:23We're cutting taxes for the middle class. And
- 49:25I will tell you, we are cutting them big league
- 49:28for the middle class. And I will tell you, Hillary
- 49:30Clinton is raising your taxes, folks. You can
- 49:32look at me. She's raising your taxes really high.
- 49:37What that's going to do is a disaster for the
- 49:40country. But she is raising your taxes and I'm
- 49:42lowering your taxes. That in itself is a big
- 49:45difference. We are going to be thriving again.
- 49:47We have no growth in this country. There's no
- 49:50growth. If China has a GDP of 7%, it's like a
- 49:54national catastrophe. We're down at 1%. And that's
- 49:59like no growth. And we're going lower. in my
- 50:02opinion and a lot of it has to do with the fact
- 50:04that our taxes are so high just about the highest
- 50:07in the world and i'm bring bringing them down
- 50:09to one of the lower in the world and i think
- 50:12it's so important one of the most important things
- 50:14we can do but she is raising everybody's taxes
- 50:17massively secretary clinton you have two minutes
- 50:19the question was uh what specific tax provisions
- 50:22will be changed to ensure the wealthiest americans
- 50:23pay their fair share of taxes well everything
- 50:26you've heard just now from donald is not true
- 50:29i'm I'm sorry I have to keep saying this, but
- 50:32he lives in an alternative reality. And it is
- 50:36sort of amusing to hear somebody who hasn't paid
- 50:39federal income taxes in maybe 20 years talking
- 50:41about what he's going to do. But I'll tell you
- 50:43what he's going to do. His plan will give the
- 50:46wealthy and corporations the biggest tax cuts
- 50:50they've ever had, more than the Bush tax cuts
- 50:53by at least a factor of two. Donald always takes
- 50:56care of Donald and people like Donald. And this
- 50:59would be a massive gift. And indeed, the way
- 51:03that he talks about his tax cuts would end up
- 51:06raising taxes on middle class families, millions
- 51:09of middle class families. Now, here's what I
- 51:12want to do. I have said nobody who makes less
- 51:15than $250 ,000 a year, and that's the vast majority
- 51:18of Americans, as you know, will have their taxes
- 51:21raised because I think we've got to go where
- 51:23the money is. And the money is with people who've
- 51:26taken advantage. of every single break in the
- 51:29tax code and yes when i was a senator i did vote
- 51:31to close corporate loopholes i voted to close
- 51:34i think one of the loopholes he took advantage
- 51:37of when he claimed a billion dollar uh loss that
- 51:40enabled him to avoid paying taxes i want to have
- 51:44a tax on people who are making a million dollars
- 51:48it's called the buffett rule yes warren buffett
- 51:51is the one who's gone out and said somebody like
- 51:53him should not be paying a lower tax rate than
- 51:56his secretary i want to have a surcharge on incomes
- 51:59above 5 million we have to make up for lost times
- 52:02because i want to invest in you i want to invest
- 52:04in hard -working families and i think it's been
- 52:08unfortunate but it's happened that since the
- 52:12great recession the gains have all gone to the
- 52:14top and we need to reverse that people like donald
- 52:18who paid zero in taxes zero for our vets zero
- 52:22for our military zero for health and education
- 52:25That is wrong. And we're going to make sure that
- 52:28nobody, no corporation and no individual, can
- 52:32get away without paying his fair share to support
- 52:35our country. Mr. Trump, I want to give the chance
- 52:37to respond. I just want to tell our viewers what
- 52:39she's referring to. In the last month, taxes
- 52:41were the number one issue on Facebook for the
- 52:43first time in the campaign. The New York Times
- 52:45published three pages of your 1995 tax returns.
- 52:48They show you claimed a $960 million loss, which
- 52:51means you could have avoided paying personal
- 52:53federal income taxes for years. You've said you
- 52:55pay state taxes, employee taxes, real estate
- 52:57taxes, property taxes. You have not answered,
- 53:00though, a simple question. Did you use that $916
- 53:03million loss to avoid paying personal federal
- 53:05income taxes? Of course I do. Of course I do.
- 53:08And so do all of her donors, or most of her donors.
- 53:11I know many of her donors. her donors took massive
- 53:14tax write -offs a lot of my personal federal
- 53:16income tax a lot of my write -off was depreciation
- 53:19and other things that hillary as a senator allowed
- 53:21and she'll always allow because the people that
- 53:23give her all this money they want it that's why
- 53:26see i understand the tax code better than anybody
- 53:28that's ever run for president hillary clinton
- 53:31and it's extremely complex Hillary Clinton has
- 53:34friends that want all of these provisions, including
- 53:37they want the carried interest provision, which
- 53:39is very important to Wall Street people, but
- 53:41they really want the carried interest provision,
- 53:43which I believe Hillary's leaving. It's very
- 53:46interesting why she's leaving carried interest,
- 53:48but I will tell you that, number one, I pay tremendous
- 53:51numbers of taxes. I absolutely used it, and so
- 53:55did Warren Buffett, and so did George Soros,
- 53:57and so did many of the other people that... Hillary
- 54:01is getting money from now. I won't mention their
- 54:04names because they're rich, but they're not famous.
- 54:07So we won't make them famous Can you say how
- 54:09many years you have avoided paying personal federal
- 54:12income taxes? No, but I pay tax and I pay federal
- 54:14tax, too But I have a write -off a lot of its
- 54:17depreciation, which is a wonderful charge. I
- 54:19love depreciation You know, she's given it to
- 54:22us. Hey if she had a problem For 30 years she's
- 54:25been doing this, Anderson. I say it all the time.
- 54:27She talks about health care. Why didn't she do
- 54:29something about it? She talks about taxes. Why
- 54:31didn't she do something about it? She doesn't
- 54:34do anything about anything other than talk. With
- 54:37her, it's all talk and no action. And again...
- 54:41Bernie Sanders, it's really bad judgment. She
- 54:44has made bad judgment not only on taxes, she's
- 54:48made bad judgments on Libya, on Syria, on Iraq.
- 54:52I mean, her and Obama, whether you like it or
- 54:55not, the way they got out of Iraq, the vacuum
- 54:58they've left, that's why ISIS formed in the first
- 55:01place. They started from that little area, and
- 55:03now they're in 32 different nations, Hillary.
- 55:07Congratulations. Great job. Won't you be able
- 55:09to respond, Secretary Clinton? Well, here we
- 55:14go again. I've been in favor of getting rid of
- 55:16carried interest for years Starting when I was
- 55:19a senator from New York, but that's not the point
- 55:22here. Why didn't you do it? Why didn't you do
- 55:24it? Because I was a senator with a Republican
- 55:26president. Oh, really? I will be the president.
- 55:28You could have done it. If you were an effective
- 55:30senator, you could have done it. If you were
- 55:33an effective senator, you could have done it.
- 55:36But you were not an effective senator. Please
- 55:37allow her to respond. She didn't interrupt you.
- 55:39You know, under our Constitution, Presidents
- 55:41have something called veto power. Look, he has
- 55:46now said repeatedly, 30 years this and 30 years
- 55:49that. So let me talk about my 30 years in public
- 55:53service. I'm very glad to do so. Eight million
- 55:57kids every year have health insurance because
- 56:00when I was first lady, I worked with Democrats
- 56:02and Republicans to create the Children's Health
- 56:04Insurance Program. Hundreds of thousands of kids
- 56:07now have a chance to be adopted. because I worked
- 56:11to change our adoption and foster care system.
- 56:13After 9 -11, I went to work with Republican mayor,
- 56:17governor, and president to rebuild New York and
- 56:20to get health care for our first responders who
- 56:23were suffering because they had run toward danger
- 56:25and gotten sickened by it. Hundreds of thousands
- 56:28of National Guard and Reserve members have health
- 56:30care because of work that I did, and children
- 56:34have safer medicines because I was able to pass
- 56:37a law that required... the dosing to be more
- 56:40carefully done. When I was Secretary of State,
- 56:44I went around the world advocating for our country,
- 56:47but also advocating for women's rights, to make
- 56:50sure that women had a decent chance to have a
- 56:55better life, and negotiated a treaty with Russia
- 56:58to lower nuclear weapons. 400 pieces of legislation
- 57:03have my name on it as a sponsor or co -sponsor
- 57:07when I was a senator for eight years. I worked
- 57:10very hard and was very proud to be reelected
- 57:13in New York by an even bigger margin than I had
- 57:16been elected the first time. And as president,
- 57:19I will take that work, that bipartisan work,
- 57:22that finding common ground, because you have
- 57:24to be able to get along with people to get things
- 57:26done in Washington. Thank you, Secretary. And
- 57:28I've proven that I can. And for 30 years, I've
- 57:31produced results for people. Thank you, Secretary.
- 57:33We're going to move on to Syria. Both of you
- 57:35have mentioned that. She said a lot of things.
- 57:37I mean, I think we should be allowed to maybe
- 57:39dispute it. No, Mr. Trump, we're going to go
- 57:41on. This is about the audience. Because she has
- 57:42been a disaster as a senator. Mr. Trump, we're
- 57:44going to move on. The heartbreaking video of
- 57:47a five -year -old Syrian boy named Amran sitting
- 57:50in an ambulance after being pulled from the rubble
- 57:53after an airstrike in Aleppo focused the world's
- 57:57attention on the horrors of the war in Syria.
- 58:00with 136 million views on Facebook alone. But
- 58:04there are much worse images coming out of Aleppo
- 58:06every day now, where in the past few weeks alone,
- 58:09400 people have been killed, at least 100 of
- 58:13them children. Just days ago, the State Department
- 58:16called for a war crimes investigation of the
- 58:18Syrian regime of Bashar al -Assad and its ally,
- 58:22Russia, for their bombardment of Aleppo. So this
- 58:26next question comes from social media through
- 58:28Facebook. diane from pennsylvania asks if you
- 58:31were president what would you do about syria
- 58:34and the humanitarian crisis in aleppo isn't it
- 58:38a lot like the holocaust when the u .s waited
- 58:41too long before we helped secretary clinton we
- 58:44will begin with your two minutes well the situation
- 58:47in syria is catastrophic and every day that goes
- 58:52by we see the results of the regime by assad
- 58:57in partnership with the iranians on the ground
- 59:00the russians in the air bombarding places in
- 59:04particular aleppo where there are hundreds of
- 59:07thousands of people probably about 250 000 still
- 59:10left and there is a determined effort by the
- 59:14russian air force to destroy aleppo in order
- 59:18to eliminate the last of the Syrian rebels who
- 59:24were really holding out against the Assad regime.
- 59:27Russia hasn't paid any attention to ISIS. They're
- 59:30interested in keeping Assad in power. So I, when
- 59:34I was Secretary of State, advocated, and I advocate
- 59:37today, a no -fly zone and safe zones. We need
- 59:41some leverage with the Russians because they're
- 59:44not going to come to the negotiating table for
- 59:49a diplomatic... resolution, unless there is some
- 59:52leverage over them. And we have to work more
- 59:56closely with our partners and allies on the ground.
- 1:00:00But I want to emphasize that what is at stake
- 1:00:04here is the ambitions and the aggressiveness
- 1:00:07of Russia. Russia has decided that it's all in
- 1:00:12in Syria. And they've also decided who they want
- 1:00:16to see become president of the United States,
- 1:00:18too. And it's not me. I've stood up to Russia.
- 1:00:21I've taken on Putin and others. And I would do
- 1:00:24that as president. I think wherever we can cooperate
- 1:00:28with Russia, that's fine. And I did as secretary
- 1:00:31of state. That's how we got a treaty reducing
- 1:00:33nuclear weapons. It's how we got the sanctions
- 1:00:35on Iran that put a lid on the Iranian nuclear
- 1:00:38program without firing a single shot. So I would
- 1:00:41go to the negotiating table with more leverage
- 1:00:44than we have now. But I do support the effort
- 1:00:47to investigate. for crimes, war crimes, committed
- 1:00:51by the Assyrians and the Russians and try to
- 1:00:54hold them accountable. Thank you, Secretary Clinton.
- 1:00:55First of all, she was there as Secretary of State
- 1:00:57with the so -called line in the sand, which...
- 1:01:01No, I wasn't. I was gone. I hate to interrupt
- 1:01:02you, but... But you were in contact, excuse me,
- 1:01:05you were in total contact with the White House.
- 1:01:08And perhaps, sadly, Obama probably still listened
- 1:01:12to you. I don't think he'd be listening very
- 1:01:13much anymore. Obama draws the line in the sand.
- 1:01:16It was... left at all over the world what happened.
- 1:01:21Now, with that being said, she talks tough against
- 1:01:24Russia. But our nuclear program has fallen way
- 1:01:28behind, and they've gone wild with their nuclear
- 1:01:31program. Not good. Our government shouldn't have
- 1:01:33allowed that to happen. Russia is new in terms
- 1:01:37of nuclear. We are old. We're tired. We're exhausted
- 1:01:40in terms of nuclear. A very bad thing. Now she
- 1:01:44talks tough. She talks really tough against Putin
- 1:01:47and against Assad. She talks in favor of the
- 1:01:52rebels. She doesn't even know who the rebels
- 1:01:53are. You know, every time we take rebels, whether
- 1:01:57it's in Iraq or anywhere else, we're arming people.
- 1:02:01And you know what happens? They end up being
- 1:02:03worse than the people. Look at what she did in
- 1:02:05Libya with Gaddafi. Gaddafi is out. It's a mess.
- 1:02:09And by the way, ISIS has a good chunk of their
- 1:02:11oil. I'm sure you probably have heard that. It
- 1:02:14was a disaster because the fact is almost everything
- 1:02:16she's done in foreign policy has been a mistake
- 1:02:19and it's been a disaster. But if you look at
- 1:02:22Russia, just take a look at Russia and look at
- 1:02:25what they did this week, where I agree she wasn't
- 1:02:27there, but possibly she's consulted. We sign
- 1:02:30a peace treaty. Everyone's all excited. Well,
- 1:02:33what Russia did with Assad, and by the way, with
- 1:02:36Iran, who you made very powerful with the dumbest
- 1:02:38deal perhaps I've ever seen in the history of
- 1:02:40dealmaking, the Iran deal with $150 billion,
- 1:02:43with the $1 .7 billion in cash, which is enough
- 1:02:46cash to fill up this room. But look at that deal.
- 1:02:50Iran now and Russia. are now against us. So she
- 1:02:54wants to fight. She wants to fight for rebels.
- 1:02:57There's only one problem. You don't even know
- 1:02:59who the rebels are. So what's the purpose? And
- 1:03:02one thing I have to say, I don't like Assad at
- 1:03:05all. But Assad is killing ISIS. Russia is killing
- 1:03:09ISIS. And Iran is killing ISIS. And those three
- 1:03:13have now lined up because of our weak foreign
- 1:03:16policy. Mr. Trump, let me repeat the question.
- 1:03:20If you were president, What would you do about
- 1:03:24Syria and the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo?
- 1:03:28And I want to remind you what your running mate
- 1:03:30said. He said, Okay. He and I haven't spoken,
- 1:03:51and I disagree. I disagree. I think we have to
- 1:03:54knock out ISIS. Right now, Syria is fighting
- 1:03:58ISIS. We have people that want to fight both
- 1:04:00at the same time. But Syria is no longer Syria.
- 1:04:03Syria is Russia, and it's Iran, who she made
- 1:04:05strong, and Kerry and Obama, made into a very
- 1:04:09powerful nation and a very rich nation very,
- 1:04:11very quickly. Very, very quickly. I believe we
- 1:04:15have to get ISIS. We have to worry about ISIS
- 1:04:19before we can get too much more involved. She
- 1:04:22had a chance to do something with Syria. They
- 1:04:24had a chance. And that was the line. What do
- 1:04:26you think will happen if Aleppo falls? I think
- 1:04:28Aleppo is a disaster, humanitarian -wise. What
- 1:04:31do you think will happen if it falls? I think
- 1:04:33that it basically has fallen, okay? It basically
- 1:04:36has fallen. Let me tell you something. You take
- 1:04:38a look at Mosul. The biggest problem I have with...
- 1:04:41the stupidity of our foreign policy. We have
- 1:04:44Mosul. They think a lot of the ISIS leaders are
- 1:04:46in Mosul. So we have announcements coming out
- 1:04:48of Washington and coming out of Iraq. We will
- 1:04:50be attacking Mosul in three weeks or four weeks.
- 1:04:53Well, all of these bad leaders from ISIS are
- 1:04:56leaving Mosul. Why can't they do it quietly?
- 1:04:59Why can't they do the attack, make it a sneak
- 1:05:02attack, and after the attack is made, inform
- 1:05:06the American public that we've knocked out the
- 1:05:08leaders, we've had a tremendous success. People
- 1:05:11leave. Why do they have to say we're going to
- 1:05:13be attacking Mosul within the next four to six
- 1:05:16weeks, which is what they're saying? How stupid
- 1:05:18is our country? There are sometimes reasons the
- 1:05:21military does that. Psychological warfare. I
- 1:05:24can't think of any. I can't think of any. It
- 1:05:26might be to help get civilians out. Look, I have
- 1:05:29200 generals and admirals who endorse me. I have
- 1:05:3221 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who
- 1:05:36endorse me. We talk about it all the time. They
- 1:05:40understand. Why can't they do something secretively
- 1:05:43where they go in and they knock out the leadership?
- 1:05:47Why would these people stay there? I've been
- 1:05:50reading now for weeks about Mosul, that it's
- 1:05:54the harbor of where, you know, between Raqqa
- 1:05:57and Mosul. This is where they think the ISIS
- 1:05:59leaders are. Why would they be saying they're
- 1:06:02not staying there anymore? They're gone because
- 1:06:04everybody's talking about how Iraq. which is
- 1:06:07us with our leadership, goes in to fight Mosul.
- 1:06:11Now, with these 200 admirals and generals, they
- 1:06:15can't believe it. All I say is this. General
- 1:06:17George Patton, General Douglas MacArthur. are
- 1:06:20spinning in their grave at the stupidity of what
- 1:06:24we're doing in the Middle East. I'm going to
- 1:06:25go to Secretary Clinton. Secretary Clinton, you
- 1:06:27want Assad to go. You advocated arming rebels,
- 1:06:30but it looks like that may be too late for Aleppo.
- 1:06:33You talk about diplomatic efforts. Those have
- 1:06:36failed. Ceasefires have failed. Would you introduce
- 1:06:39the threat of U .S. military force beyond a no
- 1:06:43-fly zone against the Assad regime to back up
- 1:06:46diplomacy? I would not. use American ground forces
- 1:06:51in Syria. I think that would be a very serious
- 1:06:54mistake. I don't think American troops should
- 1:06:58be holding territory, which is what they would
- 1:07:01have to do as an occupying force. I don't think
- 1:07:04that is a smart strategy. I do think the use
- 1:07:08of special forces, which we're using, The use
- 1:07:11of enablers and trainers in Iraq, which has had
- 1:07:15some positive effects, are very much in our interests.
- 1:07:19And so I do support what is happening. So what
- 1:07:21would you do differently than President Obama
- 1:07:23is doing? Martha, I hope that by the time I am
- 1:07:27president that we will have pushed ISIS out of
- 1:07:34Iraq. I do think that there is a good chance
- 1:07:37that we can take Mosul. And, you know, Donald
- 1:07:41says he knows more about ISIS than the generals.
- 1:07:43No, he doesn't. There are a lot of very important
- 1:07:47planning going on. And some of it is to signal
- 1:07:51to the Sunnis in the area, as well as Kurdish
- 1:07:55Peshmerga fighters, that we all need to be in
- 1:07:58this. And that takes a lot of planning and preparation.
- 1:08:01I would go after Baghdadi. I would specifically
- 1:08:04target Baghdadi. al -Qaeda leaders, and I was
- 1:08:10involved in a lot of those operations, highly
- 1:08:12classified ones, made a difference. So I think
- 1:08:16that could help. I would also consider arming
- 1:08:19the Kurds. The Kurds have been our best partners
- 1:08:22in Syria, as well as Iraq. And I know there's
- 1:08:27a lot of concern about that in some circles,
- 1:08:30but I think they should have the equipment they
- 1:08:32need so that Kurdish and Arab fighters on the
- 1:08:35ground are the principal way that we take Raqqa
- 1:08:39after pushing ISIS out of Iraq? Thank you very
- 1:08:42much. We're going to move on. She went over a
- 1:08:43minute over and you don't stop her. When I go
- 1:08:47one second over, it's like you had many answers.
- 1:08:49It's really very interesting. Got a question
- 1:08:51over here from James Carter. Mr. Carter. My question
- 1:09:00is, do you believe you can be a devoted president
- 1:09:10to all the people? in the United States? That
- 1:09:14question begins for Mr. Trump. Absolutely. I
- 1:09:17mean, she calls our people deplorable, a large
- 1:09:22group, and irredeemable. I will be a president
- 1:09:27for all of our people, and I'll be a president
- 1:09:29that will turn our inner cities around and will
- 1:09:32give strength to people and will give economics
- 1:09:36to people and will bring jobs back because NAFTA,
- 1:09:39signed by her husband, is perhaps the greatest
- 1:09:41disaster. trade deal in the history of the world.
- 1:09:44Not in this country. It stripped us of manufacturing
- 1:09:47jobs. We lost our jobs. We lost our money. We
- 1:09:52lost our plants. It is a disaster. And now she
- 1:09:54wants to sign TPP, even though she says now she's
- 1:09:57for it. She called it the gold standard. And
- 1:09:58by the way, at the last debate, she lied because
- 1:10:00it turned out that she did say the gold standard.
- 1:10:03And she said she didn't say it. They actually
- 1:10:05said that she lied. OK, and she lied. But she's
- 1:10:09lied about a lot of things. I would be. a president
- 1:10:12for all of the people, African Americans, the
- 1:10:15inner cities, devastating what's happening to
- 1:10:18our inner cities. She's been talking about it
- 1:10:20for years. As usual, she talks about it, nothing
- 1:10:23happens. She doesn't get it done. Same with the
- 1:10:26Latino Americans, the Hispanic Americans, the
- 1:10:31same exact thing. They talk. They don't get it
- 1:10:33done. You go into the inner cities and you see
- 1:10:36it's 45 % poverty. African Americans now 45 %
- 1:10:40poverty in the inner cities. The education is
- 1:10:43a disaster. Jobs are essentially non -existent.
- 1:10:48I mean, it's, you know, and I've been saying
- 1:10:51at big speeches where I have 20 and 30 ,000 people,
- 1:10:55what do you have to lose? It can't get any worse.
- 1:10:58And she's been talking about the inner cities
- 1:11:00for 25 years. Nothing's going to ever happen.
- 1:11:04Let me tell you, if she's president of the United
- 1:11:06States, nothing's going to happen. It's just
- 1:11:07going to be talk. And all her friends, the taxes
- 1:11:09we were talking about, and I would just get it
- 1:11:12by osmosis. She's not doing any favors. But by
- 1:11:16doing all the others favors, she's doing me favors.
- 1:11:18Mr. Trump, thank you. But I will tell you, she's
- 1:11:21all talk. It doesn't get done. All you have to
- 1:11:23do is take a look at her Senate run. Take a look
- 1:11:25at upstate New York. Your two minutes is up.
- 1:11:27Secretary Clinton, two minutes. It turned out
- 1:11:28to be a disaster. You have two minutes, Secretary
- 1:11:30Clinton. Well. 67 % of the people voted to reelect
- 1:11:34me when I ran for my second term. And I was very
- 1:11:38proud and very humbled by that. Mr. Carter, I
- 1:11:43have tried my entire life to do what I can to
- 1:11:47support children and families. You know, right
- 1:11:51out of law school, I went to work for the Children's
- 1:11:53Defense Fund. And Donald talks a lot about, you
- 1:11:56know, the 30 years I've been in public service.
- 1:12:00I'm proud of that. You know, I started off as
- 1:12:03a young lawyer working against discrimination
- 1:12:05against African American children in schools
- 1:12:08and in the criminal justice system. I worked
- 1:12:11to make sure that kids with disabilities could
- 1:12:13get a public education, something that I care
- 1:12:16very much about. I have worked with Latinos.
- 1:12:20One of my first jobs in politics was down in
- 1:12:23South Texas registering Latino citizens to be
- 1:12:26able to vote. So I have a deep devotion to use
- 1:12:31your absolutely correct word, to making sure
- 1:12:34that every American feels like he or she has
- 1:12:37a place in our country. And I think when you
- 1:12:42look at the letters that I get, a lot of people
- 1:12:45are worried that maybe they wouldn't have a place
- 1:12:47in Donald Trump's America. They write me and...
- 1:12:52One woman wrote me about her son, Felix. She
- 1:12:55adopted him from Ethiopia when he was a toddler.
- 1:12:57He's 10 years old now. This is the only country
- 1:12:59he's ever known. And he listens to Donald on
- 1:13:02TV, and he said to his mother one day, will he
- 1:13:05send me back to Ethiopia if he gets elected?
- 1:13:09You know, children listen to what is being said,
- 1:13:13to go back to the very, very first question.
- 1:13:16And there's a lot of fear. In fact, teachers
- 1:13:18and parents are calling it the Trump effect.
- 1:13:22A lot of people are feeling, you know, uneasy.
- 1:13:25A lot of kids are expressing their concerns.
- 1:13:27So first and foremost, I will do everything I
- 1:13:31can to reach out to everybody. Democrats, Republicans,
- 1:13:34independents, people across our country. If you
- 1:13:37don't vote for me, I still want to be your president.
- 1:13:39I want to be the best president I can be for
- 1:13:41every American. Secretary Clinton, your two minutes
- 1:13:43is up. I want to follow up on something that
- 1:13:44Donald Trump actually said to you, a comment
- 1:13:47you made last month. You said that half of Donald
- 1:13:48Trump's supporters are, quote, deplorables, racist.
- 1:13:52sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic.
- 1:13:54You later said you regretted saying half. You
- 1:13:57didn't express regret for using the term deplorables.
- 1:14:00To Mr. Carter's question, how can you unite a
- 1:14:02country if you've ridden off tens of millions
- 1:14:04of Americans? Well, within hours. I said that
- 1:14:07I was sorry about the way I talked about that
- 1:14:09because my argument is not with his supporters.
- 1:14:13It's with him and with the hateful and divisive
- 1:14:15campaign that he has run. and the inciting of
- 1:14:19violence at his rallies, and the very brutal
- 1:14:23kinds of comments about not just women, but all
- 1:14:27Americans, all kinds of Americans. And what he
- 1:14:31has said about African Americans and Latinos,
- 1:14:35about Muslims, about POWs, about immigrants,
- 1:14:40about people with disabilities, he's never apologized
- 1:14:43for. And so I do think that A lot of the tone
- 1:14:47and tenor that he has said. I'm proud of the
- 1:14:50campaign that Bernie Sanders and I ran. We ran
- 1:14:52a campaign based on issues, not insults. And
- 1:14:54he is supporting me 100 percent because we talked
- 1:14:58about what we wanted to do. We might have had
- 1:15:00some differences and we had a lot of debates,
- 1:15:03but we believed that we could make the country
- 1:15:06better. And I was proud of that. We have a divided
- 1:15:09nation. We have a very divided nation. You look
- 1:15:13at Charlotte, you look at Baltimore. You look
- 1:15:16at the violence that's taking place in the inner
- 1:15:18cities, Chicago. You take a look at Washington,
- 1:15:22D .C. We have an increase in murder within our
- 1:15:27cities, the biggest in 45 years. We have a divided
- 1:15:31nation because people like her, and believe me,
- 1:15:33she has tremendous hate in her heart. And when
- 1:15:37she said deplorables, she meant it. And when
- 1:15:40she said irredeemable, they're irredeemable.
- 1:15:43You didn't mention that. But when she said they're
- 1:15:46irredeemable, to me, that might have been even
- 1:15:48worse. She's got tremendous hatred. And this
- 1:15:53country cannot take another four years of Barack
- 1:15:56Obama. And that's what you're getting with her.
- 1:15:59Mr. Trump, let me follow up with you. In 2008,
- 1:16:01you wrote in one of your books that the most
- 1:16:03important characteristic of a good leader is
- 1:16:05discipline. You said if a leader doesn't have
- 1:16:07it, quote, he or she won't be one for very long.
- 1:16:10In the days after the first debate, you sent
- 1:16:12out a series of tweets from 3 a .m. to 5 a .m.,
- 1:16:14including one that told people to check out a
- 1:16:16sex tape. Is that the discipline of a good leader?
- 1:16:18No, it wasn't check out a sex tape. It was just
- 1:16:20take a look at the person that she built up to
- 1:16:22be this wonderful Girl Scout who was no Girl
- 1:16:25Scout. By the way, just so you understand, when
- 1:16:28she said 3 o 'clock in the morning, take a look
- 1:16:30at Benghazi. She said, who's going to answer
- 1:16:33the call at 3 o 'clock in the morning? Guess
- 1:16:34what? She didn't answer because when Ambassador
- 1:16:37Stevens... The question is, is that the discipline
- 1:16:39of a good leader? 600 times. Well, she said she
- 1:16:42was awake at 3 o 'clock in the morning. And she
- 1:16:44also sent a tweet out at 3 o 'clock in the morning,
- 1:16:45but I won't even mention that. But she said she'll
- 1:16:48be awake. The famous thing, we're going to answer
- 1:16:50our call at 3 o 'clock in the morning. Guess
- 1:16:51what happened? Ambassador Stevens sent 600 requests
- 1:16:57for help. And the only one she talked to was
- 1:17:00Sidney. Blumenthal, who's her friend and not
- 1:17:04a good guy, by the way. So, you know, she shouldn't
- 1:17:07be talking about that. Now, tweeting happens
- 1:17:10to be a modern -day form of communication. I
- 1:17:13mean, you can like it or not like it. I have,
- 1:17:14between Facebook and Twitter, I have almost 25
- 1:17:17million people. It's a very effective way of
- 1:17:20communication. So you can put it down, but it
- 1:17:23is a very effective form of communication. I'm
- 1:17:25not unproud of it, to be honest with you. Secretary
- 1:17:28Clinton, does Mr. Trump have the discipline to
- 1:17:30be a good leader? No. I'm shocked to hear that.
- 1:17:34Well, it's not only my opinion, it's the opinion
- 1:17:39of many others, national security experts, Republicans,
- 1:17:44former Republican members of Congress. But it's
- 1:17:48in part because those of us who have had the
- 1:17:52great privilege of seeing this job up close and
- 1:17:56know how difficult it is, and it's not just because...
- 1:18:00i watched my husband take a 300 billion dollar
- 1:18:02deficit and turn it into a 200 billion dollar
- 1:18:05surplus and 23 million new jobs were created
- 1:18:08and incomes went up for everybody everybody african
- 1:18:12-american incomes went up 33 percent and it's
- 1:18:15not just because i worked with george w bush
- 1:18:17after 9 11 and i was very proud that when i told
- 1:18:22him what the city needed what we needed to recover
- 1:18:24he said you've got it and he never wavered he
- 1:18:27stuck with me And I have worked and I admire
- 1:18:30President Obama. He inherited the worst financial
- 1:18:33crisis since the Great Depression. That was a
- 1:18:37terrible time for our country. We have to move
- 1:18:39along. Nine million people lost their jobs. Five
- 1:18:42million homes were lost. And $13 trillion in
- 1:18:45family wealth was wiped out. We are back on the
- 1:18:48right track. He would send us back into recession
- 1:18:51with his tax plans. Secretary Clinton, we are
- 1:18:54moving to an audience question. We're almost
- 1:18:56out of time. We have another. We have the slowest
- 1:18:58growth since 1929. Mr. Trump, Secretary Clinton,
- 1:19:04we want to get to the audience. Thank you very
- 1:19:07much, both of you. We have another audience question.
- 1:19:13Beth Miller has a question for both candidates.
- 1:19:17Good evening. Perhaps the most important aspect
- 1:19:20of this election is a Supreme Court justice.
- 1:19:23What would you prioritize as the most important
- 1:19:26aspect of selecting a Supreme Court justice?
- 1:19:30We begin with your two minutes, Secretary Clinton.
- 1:19:32Thank you. Well, you're right. This is one of
- 1:19:34the most important issues in this election. I
- 1:19:38want to appoint Supreme Court justices who understand
- 1:19:42the way the world really works, who have real
- 1:19:45life experience. who have not just been in a
- 1:19:48big law firm and maybe clerked for a judge and
- 1:19:51then gotten on the bench, but maybe they tried
- 1:19:53some more cases. They actually understand what
- 1:19:57people are up against because I think the current
- 1:19:59court has gone in the wrong direction. And so
- 1:20:02I would want to see the Supreme Court reverse
- 1:20:06Citizens United and get dark, unaccountable money
- 1:20:10out of our politics. Donald doesn't agree with
- 1:20:12that. I would like the Supreme Court to understand
- 1:20:15that voting rights are still a big problem in
- 1:20:17many parts of our country, that we don't always
- 1:20:20do everything we can to make it possible for
- 1:20:23people of color and older people and young people
- 1:20:27to be able to exercise their franchise. I want
- 1:20:30a Supreme Court that will stick with Roe v. Wade
- 1:20:34and a woman's right to choose, and I want a Supreme
- 1:20:36Court that will stick with marriage equality.
- 1:20:39Now, Donald has put forth the names of some people
- 1:20:41that he would consider. And among the ones that
- 1:20:44he has suggested are people who would reverse
- 1:20:47Roe v. Wade and reverse marriage equality. I
- 1:20:50think that would be a terrible mistake and would
- 1:20:53take us backwards. I want a Supreme Court that
- 1:20:56doesn't always side with corporate interests.
- 1:20:58I want a Supreme Court that understands because
- 1:21:01you're wealthy and you can give more money to
- 1:21:03something doesn't mean you have any more rights
- 1:21:05or should have any more rights than anybody else.
- 1:21:07So I have very clear views about what I want
- 1:21:11to see. trying to change the balance on the Supreme
- 1:21:14Court. And I regret deeply that the Senate has
- 1:21:17not done its job, and they have not permitted
- 1:21:20a vote on the person that President Obama, a
- 1:21:23highly qualified person, they've not given him
- 1:21:26a vote to be able to have the full complement
- 1:21:29of nine Supreme Court justices. I think that
- 1:21:32was a dereliction of duty. I hope that they will
- 1:21:35see their way to doing it, but if I am... So
- 1:21:39fortunate enough as to be president, I will immediately
- 1:21:41move to make sure that we fill that. We have
- 1:21:44nine justices. Thank you, Secretary Clinton.
- 1:21:46On behalf of our people. Thank you. You're out
- 1:21:48of time. Mr. Trump. Justice Scalia, great judge,
- 1:21:53died recently and we have a vacancy. I am looking
- 1:22:00to appoint judges very much in the mold of Justice
- 1:22:04Scalia. I'm looking for judges, and I've actually
- 1:22:08picked 20 of them so that people would see. Highly
- 1:22:12respected, highly thought of, and actually very
- 1:22:16beautifully reviewed by just about everybody.
- 1:22:19But people that will respect the Constitution
- 1:22:23of the United States. And I think that this is
- 1:22:28so important. Also, the Second Amendment, which
- 1:22:30is totally under siege by people like Hillary
- 1:22:33Clinton. They'll respect the Second Amendment
- 1:22:36and what it stands for, what it represents. So
- 1:22:39important to me. Now, Hillary mentioned something
- 1:22:41about contributions, just so you understand.
- 1:22:44So I will have in my race more than $100 million
- 1:22:48put in of my money, meaning I'm not taking all
- 1:22:51of this big money from all of these different
- 1:22:54corporations like she's doing. What I ask is
- 1:22:55this. So I'm putting in more than by the time
- 1:22:58it's finished, I'll have more than $100 million
- 1:22:59invested. Pretty much self -funding mind. We're
- 1:23:03raising money for the Republican Party and we're
- 1:23:05doing tremendously on the small donation $61
- 1:23:07average or so I asked Hillary. Why doesn't she
- 1:23:11made 250 million dollars by being an office?
- 1:23:15She used the power of her office to make a lot
- 1:23:17of money Why isn't she funding, not for $100
- 1:23:21million, but why don't you put $10 or $20 or
- 1:23:23$25 or $30 million into your own campaign? It's
- 1:23:27$30 million less for special interests that will
- 1:23:30tell you exactly what to do. And it would really,
- 1:23:33I think, be a nice sign to the American public.
- 1:23:35Why aren't you putting some money in? You have
- 1:23:37a lot of it. You've made a lot of it. because
- 1:23:39of the fact that you've been in office you made
- 1:23:42a lot of it while you were secretary of state
- 1:23:44actually so why aren't you putting money into
- 1:23:47your own campaign i'm just curious well thank
- 1:23:49you very much thank you we're going to get on
- 1:23:51to one more question the question was about the
- 1:23:52supreme court and i just want to quickly say
- 1:23:54very quickly i respect the second amendment But
- 1:23:58I believe there should be comprehensive background
- 1:24:00checks, and we should close the gun show loophole
- 1:24:03and close the online loophole. We have one more
- 1:24:06question, Mrs. Clinton. We have one more question
- 1:24:09from Ken Bone about energy policy. Ken? What
- 1:24:16steps will your energy policy take to meet our
- 1:24:18energy needs while at the same time remaining
- 1:24:21environmentally friendly and minimizing job loss
- 1:24:24for fossil power plant workers? Mr. Trump, two
- 1:24:27minutes. Absolutely. I think it's such a great
- 1:24:28question because... Energy is under siege by
- 1:24:31the Obama administration, under absolute siege.
- 1:24:35The EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, is
- 1:24:38killing these energy companies. And foreign companies
- 1:24:42are now coming in, buying so many of our different
- 1:24:45plants, and then rejiggering the plant so that
- 1:24:49they can take care of their oil. We are killing,
- 1:24:52absolutely killing, our energy business in this
- 1:24:55country. Now, I'm all for... alternative forms
- 1:24:58of energy, including wind, including solar, etc.
- 1:25:01But we need much more than wind and solar. And
- 1:25:04you look at our miners. Hillary Clinton wants
- 1:25:06to put all the miners out of business. There
- 1:25:09is a thing called clean coal. Coal will last
- 1:25:13for a thousand years in this country. Now we
- 1:25:16have natural gas and so many other things because
- 1:25:18of technology. We have unbelievable, we have
- 1:25:21found over the last seven years, we have found
- 1:25:24tremendous wealth right under our feet. So good,
- 1:25:27especially when you have $20 trillion in debt.
- 1:25:30I will bring our energy companies back. They'll
- 1:25:34be able to compete. They'll make money. They'll
- 1:25:37pay off our national debt. They'll pay off our
- 1:25:39tremendous budget deficits, which are... are
- 1:25:42tremendous. But we are putting our energy companies
- 1:25:46out of business. We have to bring back our workers.
- 1:25:50You take a look at what's happening to steel
- 1:25:52and the cost of steel and China dumping vast
- 1:25:55amounts of steel all over the United States,
- 1:25:58which essentially is killing our steel workers
- 1:26:01and our steel companies. We have to guard. our
- 1:26:05energy companies. We have to make it possible.
- 1:26:08The EPA is so restrictive that they are putting
- 1:26:12our energy companies out of business. And all
- 1:26:15you have to do is go to a great place like West
- 1:26:17Virginia or places like Ohio, which is phenomenal,
- 1:26:20or places like Pennsylvania, and you see what
- 1:26:24they're doing to the people, miners and others,
- 1:26:27in the energy business. It's a disgrace. Your
- 1:26:29time is up. Thank you, sir. It's an absolute
- 1:26:31disgrace. Secretary Clinton, two minutes. Well,
- 1:26:35that was very interesting. First of all, China
- 1:26:39is illegally dumping steel in the United States
- 1:26:42and Donald Trump is buying it to build his buildings,
- 1:26:45putting steel workers and American steel plants
- 1:26:48out of business. That's something that I fought
- 1:26:51against as a senator and that I would have a
- 1:26:54trade prosecutor to make sure that we don't get
- 1:26:58taken advantage of by China on steel or anything
- 1:27:01else. You know, because it sounds like you're
- 1:27:04in the business or you're aware of people in
- 1:27:06the business, you know that we are now for the
- 1:27:08first time ever energy independent. We are not
- 1:27:11dependent upon the Middle East, but the Middle
- 1:27:14East still controls a lot of the prices. So the
- 1:27:16price of oil has been way down, and that has
- 1:27:19had a damaging effect on a lot of the oil companies,
- 1:27:23right? We are, however, producing a lot of natural
- 1:27:26gas, which serves as a bridge to more... renewable
- 1:27:30fuels and I think that's an important transition.
- 1:27:34We've got to remain energy independent. It gives
- 1:27:37us much more power and freedom than to be worried
- 1:27:41about what goes on in the Middle East. We have
- 1:27:43enough worries over there without having to worry
- 1:27:45about that. So I have a comprehensive energy
- 1:27:49policy but it really does include fighting climate
- 1:27:52change because I think that is a serious problem
- 1:27:54and I support moving toward more clean, renewable
- 1:27:59energy as quickly as we can, because I think
- 1:28:03we can be the 21st century clean energy superpower
- 1:28:06and create millions of new jobs and businesses.
- 1:28:10But I also want to be sure that we don't leave
- 1:28:12people behind. That's why I'm the only candidate
- 1:28:15from the very beginning of this campaign who
- 1:28:17had a plan to help us revitalize coal country,
- 1:28:22because those coal miners and their fathers and
- 1:28:24their grandfathers They dug that coal out. A
- 1:28:27lot of them lost their lives. They were injured.
- 1:28:30But they turned the lights on, and they powered
- 1:28:32our factories. I don't want to walk away from
- 1:28:34them. So we've got to do something for them.
- 1:28:36But the price of coal is down worldwide. So we
- 1:28:39have to look at this comprehensively. And that's
- 1:28:41exactly what I have proposed. I hope you will
- 1:28:43go to HillaryClinton .com. And we have skipped
- 1:28:45my entire policy. One more audience question.
- 1:28:48We've sneaked in one more question, and it comes
- 1:28:51from Carl Becker. My question to both of you
- 1:28:59is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would
- 1:29:04either of you name one positive thing that you
- 1:29:09respect in one another? Mr. Trump, would you
- 1:29:18like to go first? Well, I certainly will, because
- 1:29:25I think that's a very fair and important question.
- 1:29:28Look, I respect his children. His children are
- 1:29:33incredibly able. and devoted. And I think that
- 1:29:39says a lot about Donald. I don't agree with nearly
- 1:29:42anything else he says or does, but I do respect
- 1:29:46that. And I think that is something that as a
- 1:29:49mother and a grandmother is very important to
- 1:29:52me. So I believe that this election has become
- 1:29:59in part so So conflict -oriented, so intense,
- 1:30:05because there's a lot at stake. This is not an
- 1:30:09ordinary time and this is not an ordinary election.
- 1:30:13We are going to be choosing a president who will
- 1:30:16set policy for not just four or eight years,
- 1:30:20but because of some of the important decisions
- 1:30:22we have to make here at home and around the world,
- 1:30:25from the Supreme Court to energy and so much
- 1:30:28else. And so there is... lot at stake it's one
- 1:30:32of the most consequential elections that we've
- 1:30:34had and that's why I've tried to put forth specific
- 1:30:37policies and plans trying to get it off of the
- 1:30:40personal and put it on to what it is I want to
- 1:30:43do as president and that's why I hope people
- 1:30:46will check on that for themselves so that they
- 1:30:49can see that yes I've spent 30 years actually
- 1:30:53maybe a little more working to help kids and
- 1:30:56families and i want to take all that experience
- 1:30:58to the white house and do that every single day
- 1:31:01mr trump well i consider her statement about
- 1:31:06my children to be a very nice compliment i don't
- 1:31:09know if it was meant to be a compliment but it
- 1:31:11is a great i'm very proud of my children and
- 1:31:14they've done a wonderful job and they've been
- 1:31:17wonderful wonderful kids so i consider that a
- 1:31:20compliment i will say this about hillary she
- 1:31:24doesn't quit She doesn't give up. I respect that.
- 1:31:27I tell it like it is. She's a fighter. I disagree
- 1:31:32with much of what she's fighting for. I do disagree
- 1:31:35with her judgment in many cases. But she does
- 1:31:40fight hard, and she doesn't quit, and she doesn't
- 1:31:42give up. And I consider that to be a very good
- 1:31:45trait. Thanks to both of you. I want to thank
- 1:31:50both the candidates. I want to thank the university
- 1:31:52here. This concludes the town hall meeting. Our
- 1:31:55thanks to the candidates, the commission, Washington
- 1:31:56University, and to everybody who watched. Please
- 1:31:59tune in on October 19th for the final presidential
- 1:32:02debate that will take place at the University
- 1:32:05of Nevada, Las Vegas. Good night, everyone.
