- 10:29:53comic art or role-playing games, stand
- 10:29:55by. Mandel Public Library has something
- 10:29:57special for you. It's coming up next on
- 10:30:00the City Center podcast.
- 10:30:01[Music]
- 10:30:09And joining us today is Eric Marcus, in
- 10:30:11charge of the Technology and Innovation
- 10:30:13Center at the Mandel
- 10:30:14Public Library. Eric, welcome.
- 10:30:17Thank you very much.
- 10:30:18Okay, before we get into talking about
- 10:30:19the FanFest, I find it fascinating. We've
- 10:30:21just been talking a few minutes
- 10:30:22off-camera about your background. Tell us
- 10:30:25a little bit about yourself.
- 10:30:25So, I went to art school, Kansas City Art
- 10:30:29Institute, private art school. And I
- 10:30:32graduated in 02, and then I moved from
- 10:30:35the Midwest there. I'm actually from El
- 10:30:36Paso, Texas. I went to school Midwest.
- 10:30:38And then I came here. My
- 10:30:39wife is from Florida, Miami.
- 10:30:41So we moved back here, and we have been
- 10:30:45freelancing since then as artists. That's
- 10:30:48where we met in art school. And we have
- 10:30:50our kids, our three kids, and
- 10:30:52we've been homeschooling them.
- 10:30:53We moved to West Palm Beach, and then a
- 10:30:56couple years later we started
- 10:30:57homeschooling. And we happened to come
- 10:30:59across, because we moved close to here.
- 10:31:02We've found the Mandel Library. And from
- 10:31:05all the cities we've lived in, all the
- 10:31:07travels and stuff, the
- 10:31:08Mandel Library was amazing.
- 10:31:10There are so many amazing libraries
- 10:31:11around the country, obviously. But the
- 10:31:13Mandel Library is just, it was amazing.
- 10:31:15So, the third floor is the kids' floor.
- 10:31:17As a freelancer, we would take our kids
- 10:31:19to the third floor, and they're reading,
- 10:31:21and they're playing, and
- 10:31:22they're doing their projects.
- 10:31:22And then I'm working on my stuff with my
- 10:31:24sketchbooks and all that, you know?
- 10:31:26You mentioned you're an
- 10:31:27artist. What sort of art do you do?
- 10:31:28Okay, so I studied. I graduated, ended up
- 10:31:31focusing on illustration, which is
- 10:31:34children's books, comic books, animation.
- 10:31:38And so I did my
- 10:31:39internship with DC Comics.
- 10:31:41Wow.
- 10:31:41So I got to work on, I mean, it was
- 10:31:43amazing. This was around the time, this
- 10:31:45was right before September 11th,
- 10:31:47actually, was my internship. And so I got
- 10:31:49to work on a lot of comic books at the
- 10:31:51time. That was when the Halle Berry
- 10:31:53Catwoman movie was coming out.
- 10:31:54I got to work on some of that stuff.
- 10:31:58There was a lot of stuff where Stan Lee
- 10:31:59was doing stuff with DC Comics, the guy,
- 10:32:00the big guy, the big name at Marvel. He
- 10:32:02was one of the creators. He was doing
- 10:32:04stuff with DC Comics. I got to work with
- 10:32:06some of that project.
- 10:32:07Wow.
- 10:32:08And it was great. The bat titles and the
- 10:32:10cartoon network. It was a lot of that. So
- 10:32:12my focus was a lot of that. And then
- 10:32:14after that, I went more of the
- 10:32:16independent route. So I did a lot of
- 10:32:17other independent books. I worked on
- 10:32:20William Shatner's, some of the, he wrote
- 10:32:22some of the sci-fi novels.
- 10:32:24And this was after Star Trek stuff, I
- 10:32:26think. And so I was part of the team
- 10:32:28where we kind of translated that into
- 10:32:29comic books and comic book format. It was
- 10:32:31great. William Shatner's
- 10:32:33stuff, Vincent Price's estate,
- 10:32:36the corner of Brian biography comic, the
- 10:32:39Taylor Swift one. It was
- 10:32:40a lot of different things.
- 10:32:41So you're perfectly positioned to really
- 10:32:43be at home in a fan fest art, comic art
- 10:32:47type of event, which really brings us to,
- 10:32:50okay, so what exactly
- 10:32:52is the Mandel Fan Fest?
- 10:32:54So the Mandel Fan Fest is going to be May
- 10:32:5724th, 12 to 4, a one day, just a very
- 10:33:01concentrated event. It's
- 10:33:03basically a mini comic con.
- 10:33:06What's a comic con?
- 10:33:07A comic convention, comic book
- 10:33:08convention. And we use the word comic
- 10:33:10con, but now it's expanded to all fandom,
- 10:33:13right? Even though it's still comic con.
- 10:33:17But we have people who are going to be
- 10:33:19script writers and people who are
- 10:33:20collecting toys and songs.
- 10:33:21So it's that whole general thing. But
- 10:33:23basically that's what that is. It's a day
- 10:33:25for fans of all kinds of genres to
- 10:33:29celebrate at that event with the vendors
- 10:33:32and the events and the
- 10:33:33panelists and stuff like that.
- 10:33:35That's really neat. Well, it's
- 10:33:36interesting to see how the conventions
- 10:33:38have morphed and changed over the years.
- 10:33:41I have the privilege of saying that I
- 10:33:43went to the first one of the very first
- 10:33:45comic cons in New York City back in 1975.
- 10:33:48Wow.
- 10:33:48Okay. And it was exactly the kind of
- 10:33:51thing where you went there and everyone
- 10:33:53was just into the comic art and the books
- 10:33:56and the idea of people walking around in
- 10:33:59costume and the vibe that you get at
- 10:34:01modern comic cons or conventions.
- 10:34:04That wasn't there. We were just into the
- 10:34:06magazine. You have a first issue of that.
- 10:34:09I got to have that. So we were sort of
- 10:34:11dealing in that. So it's really expanded
- 10:34:13and it's really for everybody.
- 10:34:15Yeah, I love that. I love that. I have
- 10:34:18seen pictures of some of the first comic
- 10:34:20cons and stuff. You're right. Like in New
- 10:34:21York, I remember seeing some photos of
- 10:34:22that. And I mean, you're right. Just the
- 10:34:25visuals you get from that. How much it's
- 10:34:27grown is amazing. It's a whole community.
- 10:34:30Oh, it's a great feeling now.
- 10:34:31So this is going to be for everyone who's
- 10:34:33involved in the fantasy science fiction
- 10:34:37genres. Well, I don't want to jump
- 10:34:40forward. Science fiction. Is
- 10:34:41it a part of what we're doing?
- 10:34:42Definitely. Oh, definitely. So yeah. And
- 10:34:45movies. Movies. Anything that's going to
- 10:34:48be any kind of that you can have some
- 10:34:49kind of fan following to, it's going to
- 10:34:51be there. And that's the people we're
- 10:34:53welcoming. Anybody who has any kind of
- 10:34:55love of any fandom to show up there.
- 10:34:57So once you show up there, what kind of
- 10:34:59things can people expect to see? So we'll
- 10:35:01have a bunch of photo ops for sure. I
- 10:35:03know the 501st is going to be there,
- 10:35:05which is basically for those who don't
- 10:35:07know. The 501st is
- 10:35:09the Star Wars community.
- 10:35:11They're a nonprofit. They're amazing.
- 10:35:14They're at all these big events. Then
- 10:35:16being a nonprofit, they do all this for
- 10:35:18free. They show up in the costume and all
- 10:35:19the Star Wars garb. And they do their
- 10:35:21photo shoot their photo ops with people.
- 10:35:23And they're walking around making the
- 10:35:24event exciting. I mean, they have a huge
- 10:35:25following. They're really friendly
- 10:35:27people. They're awesome. So they're going
- 10:35:28to be there. We have photo opportunities.
- 10:35:30Aside from that, we'll have the different
- 10:35:33panelists. We'll have artists, local
- 10:35:36artists. And it's a good amount of stuff.
- 10:35:38It's not just like you said, it's not
- 10:35:39just like somebody who does comic books.
- 10:35:40It's somebody who does comic books. It's
- 10:35:41other people who are going to be doing
- 10:35:42different kinds of sculptures and
- 10:35:46writers. And it's a variety of things.
- 10:35:49Because I want it to be a variety of
- 10:35:51things. I don't want somebody to feel
- 10:35:52excluded. I want the idea to be that
- 10:35:55everybody's going to go in there for
- 10:35:56that. That they get to
- 10:35:57celebrate what they love doing.
- 10:35:58And even if it's not like maybe I don't
- 10:36:00have somebody, a panelist or an artist
- 10:36:02that's specifying to the thing I love,
- 10:36:03you're going to meet people. And you're
- 10:36:05going to find somebody who does Dungeons
- 10:36:07and Dragons stuff more and this and that.
- 10:36:08So that's the idea. I
- 10:36:10want it to be inviting.
- 10:36:11Now you've mentioned panelists. What sort
- 10:36:13of panelists are you
- 10:36:13going to have for this?
- 10:36:14So we have five panelists lined up. And
- 10:36:17again, I really love that variety of it.
- 10:36:19It's going to be... So Nicki's going to
- 10:36:22be doing the Disney talk.
- 10:36:24So she's called "Diz Nicki".
- 10:36:26So she does like... I mean she knows the
- 10:36:29ins and outs of the parks. She knows the
- 10:36:31ins and outs of how to do things. How to
- 10:36:34kind of help yourself and make it a
- 10:36:35smoother day. A lot of marketing stuff. A
- 10:36:38lot of pin trading. Just really specific
- 10:36:41Disney details. She's
- 10:36:42really cool with that.
- 10:36:43So people are always like... That's
- 10:36:46really super useful. I mean how many
- 10:36:48times you would really wish you had
- 10:36:50somebody you had that really down on how
- 10:36:52to get around Disney World.
- 10:36:53Yeah I know. And this is like a guided
- 10:36:55tour. Wow. Definitely. And then I have
- 10:36:58Freddy who's going to be doing the
- 10:36:59sculptures. He's a local artist who does
- 10:37:00a bunch of like
- 10:37:01different little characters.
- 10:37:03And so he sells them. You'll see him at
- 10:37:06different events. So he does a bunch of
- 10:37:08different characters. Like he's going to
- 10:37:09be premiering some little snails that
- 10:37:12he's created. Very sci-fi-esque. Right?
- 10:37:15And he'll do a lot of sci-fi stuff for
- 10:37:17like steampunk characters. So like robots
- 10:37:19and snails. Some rabbits. Different
- 10:37:22things like that. So it's really
- 10:37:24colorful. Very textural.
- 10:37:25It's like an art exhibit then. Yeah.
- 10:37:27Yeah. Yeah. It can be. But with that idea
- 10:37:29of leaning towards the fandom stuff.
- 10:37:31Right? Exactly. Another panelist would be
- 10:37:34Sarah. She would be doing supernatural
- 10:37:36building. Like world building kind of a
- 10:37:38thing. It sounds really exciting. That's
- 10:37:42the one that I'm really super curious
- 10:37:43about too. Because just like the whole
- 10:37:44supernatural realm.
- 10:37:45You know? It's awesome.
- 10:37:45So is there a big video game sort of vibe
- 10:37:48or like a sim game playing kind of thing
- 10:37:51going on? So we won't have too much video
- 10:37:53game. I don't think I have a vendor or
- 10:37:57anything that's specific to that. Yeah.
- 10:37:59But like we will have a lot of well there
- 10:38:02will be a lot of like the board games.
- 10:38:03You know like you mentioned D&D. Right.
- 10:38:05As far as video game in this year it's
- 10:38:08not as big. But that's not because I
- 10:38:10don't want it to be. That's just kind of
- 10:38:11like we didn't get as many yet. But
- 10:38:13there's always that potential for next
- 10:38:14year. I would love that. Sure. I would
- 10:38:16love that. So there's that. And then
- 10:38:17Derek is going to be another writer. I
- 10:38:20think he's doing a screenwriting 101.
- 10:38:22Which is very important because there are
- 10:38:23a lot of us creative people. And this is
- 10:38:28my constant mission is to have people
- 10:38:30outside of just even fan fest in the TIC.
- 10:38:34The idea is that we're sitting there with
- 10:38:36projects that we probably should have
- 10:38:38already been building on. And as a
- 10:38:40creative person you know you put your
- 10:38:41projects on the side and life takes over.
- 10:38:44Yeah. Screenwriting 101 is a good one
- 10:38:45because you get to kind of if you have
- 10:38:47already started something but you put it
- 10:38:49on pause show up to the 101 anyway. Warm
- 10:38:52up again. If you've never but you've
- 10:38:53always had that idea in your head and
- 10:38:55needs to grow then show up to that for
- 10:38:58that reason. Get the ball rolling. So
- 10:39:00he's going to be
- 10:39:00doing a screenwriting 101.
- 10:39:01So can you say that part of the goal or
- 10:39:05the vibe of the entire event is to be
- 10:39:08inspirational to get people creative.
- 10:39:10Without a doubt for sure on the audience
- 10:39:13side on the patron side on the community
- 10:39:15side I want them to show up and just have
- 10:39:17a great day of this. But on the other
- 10:39:20side which is where I always am mentally
- 10:39:23is the creating side. I'm always
- 10:39:25producing creating something.
- 10:39:28And there are a lot of us and that's like
- 10:39:30I said that's my personal mission is to
- 10:39:32have people realize with these kinds of
- 10:39:34events with the room we have in the
- 10:39:35library with all these resources people
- 10:39:38who want to create maybe so I mean how
- 10:39:41many conversations I've had I can't tell
- 10:39:43you where somebody says I want to go to
- 10:39:44art school but I can afford it.
- 10:39:44I actually had this kid come in a little
- 10:39:47while ago a week ago and he was like
- 10:39:50saying how he's trying to you know their
- 10:39:51family business to try to get out of
- 10:39:52debt. He says I'm trying to get out of
- 10:39:54family debt so that I can get into my
- 10:39:56student debt. That's not the right
- 10:39:59mentality. No no no. There are so many
- 10:40:02resources. I mean the T.I.C. is free.
- 10:40:05Everything that I everything that I ever
- 10:40:06used in the art school
- 10:40:08which our school is not cheap.
- 10:40:09No everything there is in the T.I.C. for
- 10:40:13free for people to use. Not only do I
- 10:40:15mean hardware but the software to have
- 10:40:17creative suite I have toon boom I have
- 10:40:19Maya with blender. Yeah let's let's talk
- 10:40:23about that. Let's let's paint a picture.
- 10:40:25Tell us about the T.I.C. and what's
- 10:40:26available for folks in the room. So
- 10:40:29anything that's digital arts is that
- 10:40:32room. Anybody that's in any in other
- 10:40:34words the arts you just put a digital
- 10:40:36spin. So if you're a painter you can
- 10:40:38digital paint. If you're a sculpture you can three-dimensional.
- 10:40:38If you're a sculptor you can 3D sculpt.
- 10:40:40If you're an animator 2D traditional we
- 10:40:43can do that there digitally and we can 3D
- 10:40:45animate as well. If you're a sound
- 10:40:47recorder if you're a singer we go in
- 10:40:49there and record you. If you need a mix
- 10:40:51engineer we have Ableton Audacity. I mean
- 10:40:54I have the MIDI the beat maker. You can
- 10:40:56you can mix in my room. This is for all
- 10:40:58the audio artists. You can mix all the
- 10:41:00way to the point of mastering. I don't
- 10:41:01have the acoustics for mastering. But I
- 10:41:03mean to get to that point alone for free.
- 10:41:06Yeah. You know studios are expensive.
- 10:41:07I have a 3D printer there so somebody can
- 10:41:11essentially 3D sculpt their own character
- 10:41:14or we could 3D scan what they've sculpted
- 10:41:17and then we 3D print. We can do a
- 10:41:20maquette of something.
- 10:41:22So essentially the room is almost like a
- 10:41:24nursery for creative people. Yes. If
- 10:41:27you're if you're a musician if you're a
- 10:41:29singer you can give them a start. Yes.
- 10:41:31You have the equipment and the know and
- 10:41:33the know how to do that.
- 10:41:33If they're artists if they are you know
- 10:41:36of any sort of creative you know
- 10:41:39environment you can give them tools to at
- 10:41:41least get started and to explore that.
- 10:41:43Yes. Every single tool is in there. It's
- 10:41:45I show up there every day and it is the
- 10:41:47whole it's what I took for granted as an
- 10:41:50artist during art school. I mean I had my
- 10:41:52studio there. I can show up at 2 in the
- 10:41:53morning and I would I'd work 2 in the
- 10:41:54morning and go to bed and I'd wait.
- 10:41:55I took it for granted. You just there you
- 10:41:57show up whatever. Now that I graduated
- 10:41:59and I no longer had that access you miss
- 10:42:02it. And then I find that room in the
- 10:42:04library and then they
- 10:42:05say hey come work here.
- 10:42:06So I can't tell you every day I wake up.
- 10:42:09I'm just like I love it. I love being in
- 10:42:11work. I love it. It's not. It's just me
- 10:42:13playing. It's a great deal. I love it.
- 10:42:14And and so it's not like I just want to
- 10:42:17keep that for myself. I want other local
- 10:42:20artists and I am I'm in the art scene and
- 10:42:21we have all these local artists that we
- 10:42:23talked to etc. And I love that feeling. I
- 10:42:25want all of them and even the ones who
- 10:42:26aren't local practicing artists people
- 10:42:29who have just been sitting there thinking
- 10:42:30they're not an artist. That's not true.
- 10:42:32You are come here and look at the tools.
- 10:42:34Are there any fees or costs involved with
- 10:42:36all free as long as you have a library
- 10:42:37card there for the
- 10:42:38Mandel library. It's free.
- 10:42:41Fantastic. Okay. So let's jump back to
- 10:42:44talking about fanfests. No. No. It was
- 10:42:46really important to talk about that. What
- 10:42:48a great resource. Yes. That's available
- 10:42:50to really nurture creativity and budding
- 10:42:53artists can can actually go in practice.
- 10:42:56Their first real steps there and that's
- 10:42:58that's a fantastic service. It's a
- 10:42:59fantastic thing to do. But at at at
- 10:43:02Fanfest. You know we've talked a little
- 10:43:04bit about you know some of the things
- 10:43:07that are going to be there. I know there
- 10:43:08are parents going is this going to be a kid's job?
- 10:43:10It's a friendly sort of environment.
- 10:43:12Definitely it is. Oh it is. Before I do
- 10:43:14that let me mention the fifth panelist.
- 10:43:16Oh yes please. Mayo Mallie. Mayo Mallie
- 10:43:19is coming to us through art
- 10:43:20life through Sibelay's projects.
- 10:43:23I love art life. Just again talking about
- 10:43:25the arts and the city and stuff. The
- 10:43:27stuff that comes out of there is amazing.
- 10:43:29Anyway so Mayo Mallie is one of the five
- 10:43:30artists. And May's going to be doing. May
- 10:43:32actually did the the all the decals that
- 10:43:35we have in the elevator in the library
- 10:43:36that they did all the illustrations and
- 10:43:38stuff. That's May's work.
- 10:43:38So May's going to have a table there and
- 10:43:41one of the panelists basically on the on
- 10:43:43the creation of their characters and the
- 10:43:45process of that. So that's going to be a
- 10:43:47really cool talk in the sense of again if
- 10:43:49I'm an artist that's kind
- 10:43:50of getting that ball rolling.
- 10:43:52I get to hear this other artist May
- 10:43:53talking about that process and the
- 10:43:54struggles and how to kind of get over
- 10:43:56those slums and stuff. So that's going to
- 10:43:58relate to a lot of people. So definitely
- 10:43:59that'd be a good one to come to it.
- 10:44:00And so anyway jumping back to like you
- 10:44:04said is definitely going to be a family
- 10:44:05friendly event. We want to
- 10:44:08keep it open to everybody.
- 10:44:11I just yeah it's it's for everyone. You
- 10:44:13can have kids in there. They're going to
- 10:44:15be things for for for children to see and
- 10:44:18enjoy and maybe even spark their own
- 10:44:20creativity. Yes definitely. I want that
- 10:44:22to happen. Yeah that's fantastic. So OK.
- 10:44:25So our dates again are May 24th.
- 10:44:27The event is open to the public from 12
- 10:44:30to 4 Saturday May 24th. OK. So come on
- 10:44:33down Mandel Public Library. You can get
- 10:44:35get that. And where can we find more
- 10:44:37information about it.

- 10:44:45that has all the information. We have
- 10:44:46pictures from last year's kind of trial
- 10:44:48run event which was fun. Yeah.
- 10:44:50And a lot of people was really good. And
- 10:44:52then all the information is there. We'll
- 10:44:54have all the artists up there and the

- 10:44:57And we haven't covered yet. No. No I
- 10:45:01think I mean I'm sure there is a lot.
- 10:45:03Yeah. Can I think of any at the moment.
- 10:45:05Maybe not. The most important thing is to
- 10:45:07have people come on down. See what's
- 10:45:08going on there. Enjoy the library. Enjoy
- 10:45:11what's happening at Mandel Public Library
- 10:45:13and enjoy the
