- 0:09Speaker 1: What's going on everybody. This is to check O Daily.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am Andrew de check O, Eagles beat reporter Friendsidethebirds
- 0:15Speaker 1: dot Com. I hope everyone enjoyed the most recent podcast
- 0:19Speaker 1: that I did, where I sat down with former Eagles
- 0:21Speaker 1: fullback Josh Parry. That's something. These interviews are something that
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm looking to weave in in conjunction with my daily
- 0:29Speaker 1: podcast to bring you guys some extra off season content.
- 0:33Speaker 1: And I really pride myself on identifying former Eagles that
- 0:36Speaker 1: have really compelling stories and then allowing those subjects to
- 0:40Speaker 1: share those stories. I kind of get out of the
- 0:42Speaker 1: way and I let them revisit their playing career and
- 0:47Speaker 1: it's been a lot of fun. I talked to Jeff
- 0:49Speaker 1: Thomas in the week before, Josh Parry earlier this week,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and I have some other ones in the pipeline that
- 0:55Speaker 1: we'll have throughout the off season for you. But today
- 0:59Speaker 1: we're going to look at the quarterback room, much like
- 1:01Speaker 1: I look at the tight end room earlier in the week.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And we'll first start by saying that the Eagles seemingly
- 1:09Speaker 1: have a new quarterbacks coach, and as was reported by
- 1:13Speaker 1: Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Eagles are expected to
- 1:18Speaker 1: name Parks Fraser the quarterbacks coach for the twenty twenty
- 1:22Speaker 1: sixth season. Nothing's been confirmed yet, but that seems to
- 1:26Speaker 1: be the way the Eagles are leaning, meaning that Scott
- 1:30Speaker 1: Leffler and I know that there seemed to be a
- 1:32Speaker 1: lot of Scott Leffler fans out there, won't be in
- 1:34Speaker 1: the mix this season. Parks Fraser was on staff last
- 1:37Speaker 1: year as the past game coordinator. I know many of
- 1:40Speaker 1: you when you hear that, are going to roll your
- 1:43Speaker 1: eyes because it left a lot to be desired last season. Now,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it wasn't all bad jaywhen Hurts through for a career
- 1:49Speaker 1: high in touchdowns, and it had some moments, although they
- 1:52Speaker 1: were pretty infrequent. But this is a thirty four year
- 1:56Speaker 1: old coach. He came over last season as the pass
- 1:59Speaker 1: game cord under Kevin Petullo and Nick Sirianni. And he's
- 2:04Speaker 1: a coach that when you look at his resume, you're
- 2:07Speaker 1: not going to be wild because he's young, so he
- 2:10Speaker 1: hasn't had a lot of opportunities. But he was once
- 2:13Speaker 1: upon a time a quarterbacks coach and assistant quarterbacks coach
- 2:17Speaker 1: for the Indianapolis Colts. He was the interim head offensive
- 2:22Speaker 1: coordinator under Jeff's Saturday when Jeff Saturday replaced Frank Reich.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And so that right there is probably the most eye
- 2:32Speaker 1: popping part of his resume that he has called plays before.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But I think you also have to wonder about that
- 2:38Speaker 1: aspect because when the offense was struggling last season, the
- 2:42Speaker 1: Eagles seemingly didn't have anyone else that they could turn to,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and so they continue to keep Kevin Petullo in that role.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They didn't turn to Parks Frasier, that didn't turn to
- 2:50Speaker 1: Scott Leffler or whoever else you want to name. But
- 2:54Speaker 1: this is a young coach who obviously has familiarity with
- 2:57Speaker 1: jaywhen Hursts. Jay when Hurts seems to have comfortability that
- 3:02Speaker 1: can be suggested with that with that reassignment. But there's
- 3:08Speaker 1: going to be a tall task here for Parks Frasier
- 3:11Speaker 1: in getting Jaywen Hurts to play to the level that
- 3:13Speaker 1: he played in years past. You've seen glimpses, but last
- 3:17Speaker 1: season was not a great season for Jalalen Hurts. Wasn't
- 3:21Speaker 1: a good season for the offense in general. But let's
- 3:23Speaker 1: start to unpack now that we've sort of gotten past
- 3:27Speaker 1: the presumed quarterbacks coach, the quarterback room itself, Jayalen Hurts
- 3:32Speaker 1: is now going to be faced with a tall task,
- 3:35Speaker 1: probably the most challenging year, at least on the surface
- 3:39Speaker 1: of his career, because he's going to be asked to
- 3:41Speaker 1: do things that presumably, and I say presumably, because we
- 3:45Speaker 1: don't quite know what the offense is going to look
- 3:47Speaker 1: like yet. All we have to go off of is
- 3:49Speaker 1: the influences of that Sean Mannion has in his past.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But based off of that, this is something that is
- 3:55Speaker 1: going to be a stark contrast compared to what Jaywen
- 3:58Speaker 1: Hurts has had to do in the past. So you're
- 4:00Speaker 1: going to see a West Coast offense. So the ball's
- 4:03Speaker 1: got to come out on time, the throwing the throwing game,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the passing game has to be in rhythm. You have
- 4:10Speaker 1: to make quick decisions. I would like to see Jayalen
- 4:12Speaker 1: Hurts run a little bit more this year, but I
- 4:15Speaker 1: think you're going to see him tested in a way
- 4:18Speaker 1: you haven't seen before. And that's not to say he's
- 4:21Speaker 1: going to be the only person who's tested the offense
- 4:24Speaker 1: as a whole. I think that you're going to see
- 4:26Speaker 1: some different intricacies in the run game, and with Ryan
- 4:30Speaker 1: Mahaffey now the run game coordinator coming over from Green Bay,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you're likely going to see some different schematics and how
- 4:36Speaker 1: they approach the run game. But looking at it through
- 4:40Speaker 1: the lens of Jalen Hurts, this is going to be
- 4:43Speaker 1: the big question because Kellen Moore, let's not forget, came
- 4:46Speaker 1: in in twenty twenty four with the expectation of bringing
- 4:50Speaker 1: in a lot of motion, a lot of usage of
- 4:54Speaker 1: eleven personnel and getting that third receiver into the mix
- 4:57Speaker 1: and middle of the field throws. It came over and
- 5:01Speaker 1: when he did come to Philadelphia, I remember seeing on
- 5:04Speaker 1: social media beware of the hitches, Here come the hitch routes.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And that's something that has stayed in the Eagles offensive playbook.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's pretty much a hallmark and a lot of teams
- 5:15Speaker 1: playbooks that's the Eagles aren't exclusive to that. But the
- 5:20Speaker 1: point is is that when kell Moore came over, you
- 5:23Speaker 1: expected to see drastic changes, and for the first four
- 5:25Speaker 1: weeks more or less, you saw that it didn't go well.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The Eagles turned the ball over, the offense looked disjointed,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and then give Kellen Moore credit, he scaled it back,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and they reverted to an offense that suited that team more,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and they became run heavy, and it's hard to argue
- 5:43Speaker 1: against an offense that has a two thousand yard running back.
- 5:47Speaker 1: There were moments in the passing game that were fine,
- 5:49Speaker 1: like the Steelers game and the postseason, but we're cherry
- 5:52Speaker 1: picking here. The passing game in twenty twenty four left
- 5:55Speaker 1: a lot to be desired, if we're being completely honest.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And so you look at this year. We expect Sean
- 6:02Speaker 1: manni and to bring in a lot more under center principles,
- 6:05Speaker 1: middle of the field utilization, quick decision making, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: motion and all those things, but we don't yet know
- 6:15Speaker 1: what the offense is ultimately going to look like. They
- 6:17Speaker 1: may try to implement that in Philadelphia in twenty twenty six,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and they may end up having to scale it back
- 6:23Speaker 1: much like they did with Kellen Moore. And any good
- 6:27Speaker 1: coach that you bring in is going to tailor the
- 6:30Speaker 1: offense to accentuate the strengths of your players. But I
- 6:34Speaker 1: think it's also unfair to suggest that Jalen Hurts can't
- 6:37Speaker 1: do it because he hasn't really been asked to do it.
- 6:40Speaker 1: He's done it, not consistently. That's the key. You've seen
- 6:44Speaker 1: moments where he's throwing over the middle of the field.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You've seen moments with the passing game, throwing with anticipation
- 6:51Speaker 1: and all those things you would like to see, but
- 6:54Speaker 1: it hasn't been on a consistent basis. So if the
- 6:56Speaker 1: Eagles quickly find that that's not their most successful resci well,
- 7:01Speaker 1: if Sean Mannian is a good coach and it's sharp
- 7:03Speaker 1: minded as he's being billed, you're going to alter the
- 7:07Speaker 1: offense to fit the strengths of your players. I go
- 7:11Speaker 1: back to the square peg round hole. But Jalen's proven
- 7:14Speaker 1: to be coachable. He's obviously a coach's son. He's talked
- 7:17Speaker 1: about like appreciating being coached hard and challenges and all that.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But make no mistake about it, this is going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: be a drastic departure from what he's used to since
- 7:30Speaker 1: being the starting quarterback in Philadelphia. He's no stranger to
- 7:35Speaker 1: I guess change because this is now going to be
- 7:38Speaker 1: his sixth quarterback coach. He's had a number of offensive coordinators,
- 7:41Speaker 1: so he is adaptable. But I think he also deserves
- 7:44Speaker 1: the benefit of the doubt that he's going to be
- 7:45Speaker 1: able to capably execute something new and for the Eagles
- 7:50Speaker 1: offense to ultimately evolve and become something to something on
- 7:56Speaker 1: the level of some of the more preeminent offense in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the NFL and modernize things. You got to give him
- 8:02Speaker 1: that opportunity to do so. But I think right now
- 8:06Speaker 1: where Jalen Hurts is, He's done some really good things.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He's won a ton of games in Philadelphia. The Eagles
- 8:13Speaker 1: have been really successful playing a certain style. Twenty five
- 8:17Speaker 1: touchdowns last season, Super Bowl MVP. I don't have to
- 8:19Speaker 1: go through the resume, but this offense is going to
- 8:23Speaker 1: be predicated on whether or not Jalen Hurts is able
- 8:26Speaker 1: to adapt to this kind of change. I go back
- 8:34Speaker 1: to He's dealt with a lot of change in his career.
- 8:36Speaker 1: But fundamentally and structurally, this is going to be for
- 8:42Speaker 1: what we expect a very new look Eagles offense. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't like looking at what they did, what Sean Mannion
- 8:52Speaker 1: did in the past, the coaches that he brought in,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and this and that, because we should have learned our
- 8:56Speaker 1: lesson from Kellen Moore. So it would be disingenuous for
- 8:59Speaker 1: me to sit here and tell you all, yeah, they're
- 9:01Speaker 1: gonna do this. Yeah, they're gonna do that. No, they're
- 9:03Speaker 1: not gonna do this. We have to let things play out.

- 11:31Speaker 1: But I think the Eagles have the right quarterback and
- 11:34Speaker 1: the right mental makeup to be able to embrace this
- 11:38Speaker 1: kind of change. Whether or not it ultimately works out,
- 11:41Speaker 1: we have no way of knowing, but we're gonna find out.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And I think this is a really big season for
- 11:45Speaker 1: Jalen Hurdson for the offense as a whole. Now, as
- 11:49Speaker 1: we look towards the other quarterbacks in the room, Tanner McKee,
- 11:53Speaker 1: Tanner McKee, he's had great training camps, he's had good preseasons,
- 11:58Speaker 1: he's had good moments, and he's had to be called
- 12:00Speaker 1: upon in the regular season. Really just the end of
- 12:04Speaker 1: the twenty twenty four season is when I'm speaking on then.
- 12:07Speaker 1: He didn't really perform well when he was pressed into
- 12:09Speaker 1: service in the twenty twenty five season, but he is
- 12:13Speaker 1: a good quarterback. I think there are some who try
- 12:18Speaker 1: to make him out to be something that he isn't.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I mean, he's not a larger than life figure. He
- 12:24Speaker 1: has flaws in his game, just like any quarterback does.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But I think that he does have some really good
- 12:31Speaker 1: traits in terms of being able to throw with anticipation.
- 12:34Speaker 1: He has a good arm, he keeps the offense in rhythm,
- 12:38Speaker 1: and he is someone that I think can make all
- 12:41Speaker 1: the throws. He can't do some of the special things
- 12:44Speaker 1: that a lot of the top quarterbacks in the NFL
- 12:46Speaker 1: can do. Look no further than Jalen Hurts, which I
- 12:49Speaker 1: guess while we're on the subject here, In order for
- 12:52Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts, I think to be performing at peak levels,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you need to see him run the football more. I
- 12:59Speaker 1: think he cares just one hundred and five times last
- 13:02Speaker 1: season for just over four hundred yards. That is severely
- 13:06Speaker 1: depriving the offense of a component that makes it special,
- 13:09Speaker 1: that makes jaywhen Hurt special, and so you would like
- 13:12Speaker 1: to see him do more of that. But going back
- 13:14Speaker 1: to Tanner McKee, he is a high level backup probably
- 13:19Speaker 1: can start for a number of teams in the NFL.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I don't want to get too carried away, but I'm
- 13:24Speaker 1: sure there are a lot of teams who would sign
- 13:26Speaker 1: up for what Tanner McKee can provide. But right now,
- 13:31Speaker 1: unless the Eagles are blown away with a deal, I
- 13:33Speaker 1: can't see Tanner McKee being offloaded this offseason. He's too valuable.
- 13:38Speaker 1: The Eagles have probably more than most teams value that
- 13:41Speaker 1: backup quarterback position, and he has had some really good
- 13:45Speaker 1: moments when the opportunity has presented itself. He took a
- 13:48Speaker 1: little bit of a step back late last season. You
- 13:51Speaker 1: could say that he wasn't playing with a full complement
- 13:54Speaker 1: of players. That's fair, but yeah, I mean he kind
- 13:58Speaker 1: of is who he is, and I think that when
- 14:00Speaker 1: you look at the state of quarterback play around the NFL, Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 1: there are probably a lot of teams who would sign
- 14:05Speaker 1: up for Tanner McKee, But right now looking at it,
- 14:09Speaker 1: he's a different type of quarterback than Jay when hurts,
- 14:11Speaker 1: he's a stationary guy, and he's more of a prototypical passer,
- 14:16Speaker 1: if you will, And I think he gives you stability
- 14:20Speaker 1: at that backup quarterback position. But no, I don't believe,
- 14:24Speaker 1: barring a trade that blows the Eagles away, that Tanner
- 14:28Speaker 1: McKee is going anywhere the third quarterback in this room
- 14:32Speaker 1: is Sam Howell, at least for the time being. He's
- 14:35Speaker 1: a pending free agent for agency, by the way, is
- 14:39Speaker 1: just a few weeks away. He didn't factor into any
- 14:42Speaker 1: regular season game. I thought that that was a shrewd
- 14:44Speaker 1: maneuver to bring him in before the season. Tanner McKee
- 14:48Speaker 1: had the injury in training camp and it bled a
- 14:52Speaker 1: little bit into the regular season. So having someone there
- 14:55Speaker 1: like a Sam Howell provides some insurance depending on what
- 14:58Speaker 1: happens with Tanner McKee, depending on if the Eagles are
- 15:03Speaker 1: overwhelmed with offers or something unforeseen like that, Well, it
- 15:06Speaker 1: would make a lot of sense to try and keep
- 15:08Speaker 1: Sam Howe in the fold. He's a scrappy player. He
- 15:11Speaker 1: doesn't have that prototypical size. He can move around the
- 15:14Speaker 1: pocket a little bit. He can pick up yards with
- 15:16Speaker 1: his legs if nothing else. I think he makes a
- 15:19Speaker 1: really good backup where you don't have to drastically alter
- 15:22Speaker 1: the offense because you have a player who has plus
- 15:25Speaker 1: movement ability. He's played a lot of football and he's
- 15:30Speaker 1: a gamer. He doesn't do anything particularly I don't want
- 15:36Speaker 1: to say particularly well because that doesn't sound like he's
- 15:38Speaker 1: a good football player. I think he's a solid backup
- 15:41Speaker 1: quarterback in this league. But he doesn't do anything overwhelming.
- 15:46Speaker 1: He doesn't have any overwhelming characteristics. I think is a
- 15:49Speaker 1: fair assessment here. But that was a really shrewd addition
- 15:54Speaker 1: to the roster before the season. Gives you someone who
- 15:57Speaker 1: has started games in the NFL. He's young, he was
- 16:00Speaker 1: cost effective. We'll see what the market looks like for him.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I assume that he's going to want to go to
- 16:05Speaker 1: a team that gives him an opportunity to be a
- 16:07Speaker 1: number two, maybe even a team that lets him compete
- 16:11Speaker 1: for a starting job. Maybe. But yeah, he didn't. There's
- 16:14Speaker 1: not a whole lot to really say about his time
- 16:16Speaker 1: in Philadelphia because he didn't have to play. But he
- 16:20Speaker 1: added insurance and he really just a different perspective to
- 16:25Speaker 1: add to the quarterback room, someone who's played a lot
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the NFL. But look at Jalen Hurts, look at
- 16:31Speaker 1: Tanner McKee, and yes, I am expecting the Eagles to
- 16:34Speaker 1: draft a quarterback. That shouldn't be viewed as a slight
- 16:37Speaker 1: on Jalen Hurds. It shouldn't be viewed as the Eagles
- 16:40Speaker 1: aren't happy with Tanner McKee, because neither of those things
- 16:43Speaker 1: are true, But the Eagles are billed as the quarterback factor.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I know that's often said tongue in cheek, but that's
- 16:50Speaker 1: said for a reason. They are always looking to add
- 16:53Speaker 1: another young developmental arm that you can get as a
- 16:58Speaker 1: cost effective you can mold into a cost effect effective
- 17:01Speaker 1: backup who knows you may be able to offload them
- 17:04Speaker 1: down the line in a trade. But the Eagles have
- 17:06Speaker 1: always been a team that will scour the quarterback market
- 17:10Speaker 1: in terms of the NFL Draft and try to find
- 17:13Speaker 1: a player that they can really groom and who knows
- 17:17Speaker 1: down the line where whatever becomes of Tanner McKee, maybe
- 17:20Speaker 1: he goes somewhere else and as a starter. Well, then optimally,
- 17:24Speaker 1: if everything works out according to plan, the Eagles would
- 17:27Speaker 1: have that quarterback that they've drafted and developed to be
- 17:31Speaker 1: a backup option who obviously isn't cost prohibitive.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Hey everyone, I continue to tell you about the importance
- 17:38Speaker 2: of you and your loved ones feeling safe in your

- 19:46Speaker 1: But I do expect the Egos to target a quarterback
- 19:49Speaker 1: in the draft. Where that will be whether that's day
- 19:52Speaker 1: two or day three, Well, that's neither here nor there.
- 19:57Speaker 1: But I think that really put the onus on Parks
- 20:01Speaker 1: Frasier to develop that player and the Eagles to to
- 20:07Speaker 1: really lean into their developmental periods and things like that
- 20:12Speaker 1: to give them an opportunity to be successful. They did
- 20:17Speaker 1: that they thought they had that in Kyle McCord last
- 20:20Speaker 1: year when they drafted him out of Syracuse in the
- 20:21Speaker 1: sixth round. He didn't really have a good training camp
- 20:24Speaker 1: at all, didn't perform well in the preseason. He's no
- 20:28Speaker 1: longer in Philadelphia. He signed a reserve futures deal with
- 20:30Speaker 1: the Green Bay Packers. But I would imagine that the
- 20:32Speaker 1: Eagles are going to look to try and swing the
- 20:35Speaker 1: bat again on Day three in hopes of adding a
- 20:37Speaker 1: player with some kind of upside that they can develop
- 20:40Speaker 1: behind the scenes. But that's your quarterback synopsis here as
- 20:44Speaker 1: I look at it heading into free agency, looks like
- 20:47Speaker 1: they got their quarterback coach again. We're waiting on confirmation
- 20:51Speaker 1: for that, but that should be the makeup of the
- 20:54Speaker 1: quarterback room in twenty twenty six. This has been to
- 20:57Speaker 1: check odally. I'm Andrew Decheko, and I'll catch you all
- 21:00Speaker 1: on the next one.
