- 0:00You're listening to episode 52 of Burning Brightly,
- 0:02riding the business roller coaster.
- 0:05This is Burning Brightly, a podcast for Christian
- 0:07moms who are feeling called to build a
- 0:09business and share their light with the world.
- 0:11I'm Bonnie Wiscombe, a life coach, mom, and
- 0:14entrepreneur.
- 0:15And I'm honored to be your guide as
- 0:16you face this business building adventure, full of
- 0:18highs, lows, and everything in between.
- 0:21This is where we help each other find
- 0:22the courage to shine.
- 0:28Hey friends, today's episode is going to be
- 0:29really fun because I'm going to teach you
- 0:31all the highs and lows of riding the
- 0:33business roller coaster and what that means, some
- 0:35of the pitfalls that we encounter as we
- 0:38start businesses, and what makes us want to
- 0:40quit.
- 0:41So there are very specific phases that we
- 0:43go through when we build a business.
- 0:46It's human nature.
- 0:47You cannot escape them, I promise, because I've
- 0:49built lots of businesses and it happens every
- 0:50single time.
- 0:51But knowing this information and doing some self
- 0:55-coaching or getting coached by another coach will
- 0:56help you push through the tough phases, but
- 0:59it's really important that you understand what these
- 1:00are.
- 1:01Now, the first thing I want to teach
- 1:02you is something called the Dunning-Kruger effect.
- 1:05And this is something a business coach taught
- 1:06me a while ago.
- 1:08It is a psychological phenomenon where people believe
- 1:11they are better at something than they actually
- 1:13are.
- 1:14And it's kind of the opposite of imposter
- 1:16syndrome, but it actually comes up for a
- 1:17lot of us when we first start a
- 1:19business.
- 1:20Most of us fall prey to this somewhere
- 1:22in the beginning of business, sometimes not right
- 1:24away because we realize, oh, there actually is
- 1:26a lot to learn.
- 1:27But very often, it is somewhere in those
- 1:28beginning stages where you think, oh my gosh,
- 1:30this is going to be so much fun.
- 1:31I cannot wait.
- 1:32So we begin this business journey, and this
- 1:35Dunning-Kruger effect sets in.
- 1:37We get certified as a coach, maybe, or
- 1:38we get our first client, and we're like,
- 1:40oh, yeah, I'm kind of competent in this.
- 1:42This is going to be easy.
- 1:43We start thinking that maybe we're just a
- 1:45few steps away from success, and we start
- 1:47waiting for the money to just roll in.
- 1:48We hear everybody else's stories of immediate success
- 1:50or pretty quick success, and we think, all
- 1:53right, it's just a matter of time.
- 1:54But the fact is that the difference between
- 1:56a brand new coach and one with a
- 1:58handful of clients is really just a few
- 2:00months and a little bit of dumb luck.
- 2:02So I'm not telling you this to make
- 2:04you feel discouraged, but rather just to acknowledge
- 2:06that there is always something we should be
- 2:08learning, that even at the very beginning when
- 2:10you're thinking, oh gosh, yeah, this is going
- 2:12to be exciting, this is going to be
- 2:13fun, to just remember that there is never
- 2:15going to be a time in your business
- 2:16that you're going to stop learning.
- 2:17There's never going to be a time when
- 2:19you know everything and when things are easy.
- 2:22Again, this isn't meant to be discouragement, but
- 2:23rather we're always learning and growing no matter
- 2:25where we are.
- 2:26So this also helps us realize that the
- 2:28end of our journey, there really is no
- 2:29end of the journey, but when we accomplish
- 2:30the thing we're trying to accomplish, whatever money
- 2:33we want to make or however many clients
- 2:34we want to have, that we're going to
- 2:36have more things to learn, more things to
- 2:38improve upon, okay?
- 2:39That's just a constant learning and growing process.
- 2:42So what I like to do is acknowledge
- 2:44that when one thing works in my business,
- 2:45I celebrate it, but then I look at
- 2:48it and I analyze the data immediately.
- 2:49I'll ask myself, okay, what went well, what
- 2:52didn't, what will I do different next time,
- 2:55what else will I do if I try
- 2:56something similar and I don't get the same
- 2:58results, right?
- 2:58Maybe I had a little success and I
- 3:00tried again and all of a sudden the
- 3:01results are different, to not let that get
- 3:03me down, but just acknowledge, okay, I'm going
- 3:04to have to maybe change things up.
- 3:06Just kind of always assume you're a beginner,
- 3:08but also have the confidence in your ability
- 3:12to learn any new thing.
- 3:13I know that's kind of a fine line
- 3:14to walk, right?
- 3:15Not fall prey to imposter syndrome, I'll never
- 3:16figure this out, I can't do it, I'm
- 3:18not good enough, but also not fall prey
- 3:21to this Dunning-Kruger effect, right?
- 3:22Where we're like, I'm good, yeah, I think
- 3:24I got this.
- 3:25Because the fact of the matter is, there's
- 3:26always something new to learn.
- 3:27So have confidence in your ability to learn
- 3:29any new thing and acknowledge that the new
- 3:32things will keep coming over and over and
- 3:34over.
- 3:34And that's what I love about entrepreneurship, honestly.
- 3:37So let's go back to the rollercoaster of
- 3:39business.
- 3:39Where does this fall?
- 3:40Well, it's right at the beginning, of course,
- 3:42right?
- 3:42When things are exciting and fun, when you
- 3:45do a rollercoaster, nine times out of 10,
- 3:47there is a big hill at the beginning,
- 3:49right?
- 3:49And you get to the top really, really
- 3:50quickly because they want you to get your
- 3:51adrenaline going, they want you to get really
- 3:53excited.
- 3:54If you've ever been on the Incredicoaster at
- 3:57Disney's California Adventure, it has a really fun
- 3:59start.
- 4:00It's one of my favorite rollercoasters because it
- 4:01shoots you at a high speed up that
- 4:04first mountain, right?
- 4:05There's no suspense, there's no, well, there's a
- 4:07little suspense before you get started, but it
- 4:08shoots you very rapidly up that hill.
- 4:10And that's kind of like building a business.
- 4:12We have an idea and boom, nothing can
- 4:15stop us, right?
- 4:15We're like on the computer researching all the
- 4:17things.
- 4:18And we're all of a sudden telling everybody
- 4:19ideas are flowing.
- 4:21Maybe we invest a little bit of money,
- 4:23websites, logos, telling people, we're just on top
- 4:26of the world with all the things that
- 4:27are going right for this idea, right?
- 4:28You just can't stop thinking about it.
- 4:30But the rollercoaster of business contains more than
- 4:34one step.
- 4:34More than that, just initial excitement.
- 4:36There are actually five steps of entrepreneurship.
- 4:38I've read about this multiple places on the
- 4:40internet, but the names of these stages I'm
- 4:42taking from Alex Hermosi, how he refers to
- 4:45them, because I think they're pretty brilliant.
- 4:46But this first step, that first initial exciting
- 4:48hill of the rollercoaster is called uninformed optimism
- 4:52for obvious reasons, right?
- 4:54We have no clue what we're doing and
- 4:56we don't care.
- 4:57It's a blast.
- 4:58And we can hardly sleep with all the
- 4:59ideas and all the excitement that's pumping through
- 5:01our body.
- 5:02Right here, that Dunning-Kruger effect is in
- 5:04full force.
- 5:05We have zero clue what it's going to
- 5:06take to make this thing successful, but we
- 5:08know we've got it and it's going to
- 5:10be amazing and we can't wait, which is
- 5:12so exciting, right?
- 5:13It's meant to be that way.
- 5:14Now we acknowledge that not every phase in
- 5:16business is going to be like this, but
- 5:17don't be mad at this stage.
- 5:19It's really amazing and it's really fun.
- 5:21It's the reason we start businesses, right?
- 5:22Just like the early dating stage of a
- 5:24relationship.
- 5:25We have no clue how hard marriage is
- 5:27going to be to keep going year after
- 5:29year after year, but we don't care because
- 5:30we're so giddy with the anticipation of seeing
- 5:32this person again.
- 5:33And that's how business is at the beginning.
- 5:35And it's so fun.
- 5:35So don't get angry at this stage when
- 5:38you're just a little bit uninformed, just be
- 5:41excited, write it out, but acknowledge that things
- 5:43are going to change in a little bit.
- 5:45So we're going to crest that hill of
- 5:47uninformed optimism, and suddenly we're going to find
- 5:49ourselves coasting down the other side.
- 5:51And that is where we find stage two
- 5:53called informed pessimism.
- 5:55So we're uninformed, we're excited.
- 5:57All of a sudden we start doing some
- 5:58stuff.
- 5:59It's a little bit harder than we expected.
- 6:00The money's not just pouring right in.
- 6:02The clients aren't magically materializing.
- 6:04It's taking more time, maybe more money, more
- 6:07brain power than we initially expected.
- 6:09And the pessimism sets in a little bit,
- 6:10right?
- 6:11We're eyes wide open a little bit, a
- 6:13little bit more open anyway.
- 6:14And we're like, oh, dang, this is maybe
- 6:16a little bit harder than I thought.
- 6:18The excitement cools off.
- 6:19And as we learn that this may be
- 6:21going to take us a little bit longer
- 6:22than we anticipated, not always as fun as
- 6:24the beginning, which is okay.
- 6:26That's okay.
- 6:28But unfortunately, the roller coaster keeps dipping down
- 6:31here to what we call stage three, or
- 6:34what Alex Hormozy calls the valley of despair.
- 6:36I love this name so much because it
- 6:38feels just like that.
- 6:39It feels terrible.
- 6:41Everything is set up in your business for
- 6:43success, and you're working your butt off, and
- 6:45you're posting on social media nonstop, and you're
- 6:46telling everyone, and you've seemingly done everything right.
- 6:50And now your brain is like, but nothing
- 6:51is working.
- 6:52Why is nothing working?
- 6:54You're not going to make it work.
- 6:55Everything is broken, and you're a failure.
- 6:57And you just want to sit and eat
- 6:58your body weight and cookies.
- 7:00It's the worst.
- 7:01It's disheartening.
- 7:02And frankly, the only thing that sounds good
- 7:04in your business at that stage is to
- 7:06bail, is to leave this business and start
- 7:08something else.
- 7:09Or to maybe quit the niche that you've
- 7:12considered coaching on and start something new, or
- 7:14maybe quit the marketing technique you're using and
- 7:16start something new.
- 7:17You keep thinking back to those good old
- 7:19days of uninformed optimism.
- 7:21It's got to be better than this, and
- 7:22you want to just jump ship.
- 7:25But here's the important thing.
- 7:27When you're in that valley of despair and
- 7:28you choose to do something else, guess where
- 7:30you end up?
- 7:31At the top of another roller coaster that
- 7:33looks exactly the same with the exciting uninformed
- 7:36optimism, and then the informed pessimism, and then
- 7:39the valley of despair again.
- 7:41There is no escaping it.
- 7:43You have to push through because if you
- 7:44don't, you're just going to keep hopping to
- 7:46something new, keep chasing the high.
- 7:49Again, this might not be a totally different
- 7:50business.
- 7:51It might just be a pivot in your
- 7:53current business because you think it's going to
- 7:54be better somewhere else.
- 7:55And unfortunately, it's just not.
- 7:57We have to push through that valley.
- 8:00When you get into the valley of despair,
- 8:02stop looking at all the other business ideas
- 8:04or everyone else's niche and thinking, oh my
- 8:07gosh, it's going to be so much better
- 8:08over there.
- 8:08Look how much money she's making.
- 8:10Look at how successful he is over there.
- 8:12I just need to change.
- 8:13Now, I'm not saying we don't shift things
- 8:15when things quote unquote aren't working.
- 8:17We try something new.
- 8:18We do a different webinar or a different
- 8:20marketing tactic or we try a new social
- 8:22media channel, but we do not make any
- 8:25drastic decisions in the valley of despair because
- 8:27our brain is like, eject, eject.
- 8:30I want out.
- 8:31But if you keep bailing, you never get
- 8:33to move on up the hill again to
- 8:35stage four, which is informed optimism.
- 8:39So uninformed optimism, informed pessimism, that valley of
- 8:42wants to bail from.
- 8:43And then we go up to some informed
- 8:45optimism.
- 8:46And this is where it starts to get
- 8:47fun again.
- 8:48We start to see a little success.
- 8:50Maybe we noticed that our message is resonating
- 8:52with people.
- 8:53We likely start to make some money here
- 8:55and we start having some wins.
- 8:57The excitement comes back in little by little
- 8:59as we gain evidence that it is indeed
- 9:01working.
- 9:03And then finally, that last stage is that
- 9:05of achievement where we accomplish what we set
- 9:08out to do, whether that's, I don't know,
- 9:10retire our husband or make an extra thousand
- 9:12dollars a month, whatever your big goal is.
- 9:15That's where we achieve the thing.
- 9:17And remember, achievement is fun, but it's not
- 9:19better than here.
- 9:20It's just different.
- 9:21We've achieved that goal.
- 9:22But there are other hard things.
- 9:23Right.
- 9:23Once we've accomplished that goal, we'll have other
- 9:25challenges.
- 9:26We'll have to manage a team or we'll
- 9:28have to make sure that we're regularly working
- 9:29on our business.
- 9:30Whereas right now in the valley of sorrow,
- 9:31we're just eating our feelings and complaining to
- 9:34anyone who listened.
- 9:35OK, so acknowledge the achievement doesn't make it
- 9:38better.
- 9:38It's just a little bit easier to deal
- 9:40with because our brain is like, oh, look,
- 9:41there's evidence that what we're doing is working.
- 9:44Now, here's the other important thing to know.
- 9:46This roller coaster does not happen once, even
- 9:49in the same business.
- 9:50It happens over and over again, at least
- 9:53in my business.
- 9:53And I'm thinking it probably will in yours.
- 9:56The good part is that the dips just
- 9:59get smaller.
- 9:59OK, so the highs are a little bit
- 10:01tempered.
- 10:02The lows are a little bit tempered.
- 10:03The valley of despair is never quite as
- 10:04miserable as the first time.
- 10:06But this happens every time I launch a
- 10:07program.
- 10:08Every time I make a significant goal, I
- 10:10see this happen over and over.
- 10:12I personally have also started five different businesses.
- 10:14So I've been on this roller coaster a
- 10:16lot of times.
- 10:18And I've seen this cycle happen in a
- 10:20variety of industries.
- 10:21It's not just coaching.
- 10:21It's everywhere.
- 10:22It's human nature.
- 10:23It's going to happen no matter what.
- 10:25So let's talk for just a minute about
- 10:27this valley of despair.
- 10:28How do we ensure that we do not
- 10:31bail when the time comes and we find
- 10:34ourselves here at the bottom?
- 10:35Well, there are three main steps, OK?
- 10:37The first one is awareness and acknowledgement.
- 10:39That's where we are.
- 10:40The second one is compassion and curiosity.
- 10:42And the third one is coaching, coaching ourselves
- 10:45or getting coached by someone else.
- 10:48So that first one, the awareness is just
- 10:50knowing that this exists.
- 10:51So just listening to this is going to
- 10:52teach you that this exists.
- 10:54The acknowledgement part is knowing that you're in
- 10:56it.
- 10:57Once you're there, you have to be like,
- 10:58oh, I remember Bonnie was talking about that
- 11:00valley of despair.
- 11:00I think that's what this is because I
- 11:02feel like crap and I want to bail
- 11:03and everything is failing.
- 11:04So it's very easy to hear about this.
- 11:07Not so easy to be inside that valley
- 11:09of despair and feel like everything is failing.
- 11:11But being aware of it reminds us that
- 11:12we aren't failing and business.
- 11:15Our business isn't broken, but this is just
- 11:17normal.
- 11:18This is expected.
- 11:19Write it out and it will get better.
- 11:21Number two, the compassion and the curiosity piece.
- 11:23These are hallmarks of good coaching, right?
- 11:25Being really compassionate, really curious about yourself or
- 11:28the person you are coaching.
- 11:29They're absolutely required to become a successful, happy,
- 11:33fulfilled business owner.
- 11:34You cannot blame yourself for all the things
- 11:37that are going quote unquote wrong.
- 11:40If you remember episode 48 with my friend,
- 11:42Danny fake, where she talks about parts work,
- 11:44this is where we're going to step into
- 11:46that role of authentic self that she taught
- 11:48us about.
- 11:48The best friend that you can be to
- 11:51yourself.
- 11:51There's going to be many parts in your
- 11:53brain doing different jobs.
- 11:54Your authentic self is going to be the
- 11:55one who's going to be in charge of
- 11:56them all.
- 11:57And the best friend to them all.
- 11:59She's the big sister, right?
- 12:00Who puts her arm around everybody around the
- 12:02fear and the indecision and the imposter syndrome
- 12:04and says, I see your suffering.
- 12:06I get it.
- 12:07And I know it's hard, but just stick
- 12:08with me.
- 12:09We'll pull through.
- 12:10She's the one that everybody else looks up
- 12:12to and goes, okay, if she's not panicked,
- 12:13I won't panic.
- 12:14We'll make it right.
- 12:16That's the compassion piece.
- 12:17The curiosity piece puts that authentic self in
- 12:20the driver's seat.
- 12:21And she gets curious, like, what's fear doing
- 12:23here?
- 12:24Why is she so freaked out about what's
- 12:26happening here?
- 12:27She is learning from those other parts in
- 12:28the brain and trying to figure out where's
- 12:30this coming from.
- 12:31Do I want to keep allowing this imposter
- 12:33syndrome or overwhelmed to stick around?
- 12:35Is it benefiting me in any way?
- 12:36It might be, but also I'm going to
- 12:38keep in charge.
- 12:39I'm going to keep hold of the wheel
- 12:41and make sure that none of them run
- 12:42us amok.
- 12:43Finally, number three, get coaching.
- 12:46Either do your own self coaching or get
- 12:47coached by somebody else.
- 12:48That looks like running that model, the one
- 12:50I call the head, heart, hands model on
- 12:52your thoughts and on your feelings.
- 12:54Go back to episode 20 if you don't
- 12:55know how to do a model.
- 12:56But I like to start with the heart,
- 12:58the emotion, because it's very often so much
- 13:00easier to identify emotions than it is to
- 13:02identify thoughts.
- 13:03So what am I feeling?
- 13:05What thought is causing this feeling?
- 13:07Why am I thinking this?
- 13:08What is this thought helping me do?
- 13:11Because your brain always thinks thoughts for a
- 13:12reason.
- 13:13Do I want to stay here?
- 13:14If not, how can I loosen the grip
- 13:16that this thought has on me?
- 13:18All right.
- 13:18So those stages of business, that roller coaster
- 13:22looks like this.
- 13:23Uninformed optimism, number one.
- 13:24Number two, informed pessimism.
- 13:26Number three, that valley of despair.
- 13:28This is where most people bail and try
- 13:29to go find green grass somewhere else, but
- 13:31they just find more of the same.
- 13:33Number four, informed optimism, likely where you start
- 13:36making money and have some success.
- 13:37And then number five, achievement.
- 13:39And again, you're not going to feel a
- 13:41thousand times better over there.
- 13:42Remember, because circumstances don't change our feelings, but
- 13:44you will have some evidence that it's working.
- 13:46So it does make it easier to get
- 13:47through those future valleys of despair as long
- 13:49as you keep going.
- 13:51So step into that valley of despair and
- 13:53all the other parts that come with building
- 13:54a business.
- 13:55It's so fun.
- 13:56And if you manage your mind, it's totally
- 13:58doable and enjoyable.
- 13:59Even when you're feeling a little bit miserable,
- 14:01you just get curious.
- 14:02You just get compassionate.
- 14:03You just pay attention and push your way
- 14:05through it.
- 14:06Just keep going because the only way to
- 14:07fail is to quit.
- 14:09Okay, friends, I'll talk to you next week.
