- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Hope you're going well.
- 0:14It is Monday, it's the 31st of March and we are starting a
- 0:18whole new week together. I am not going to be able to do
- 0:21much exclamation today as well. I've, I think I'm just starting
- 0:26to lose that fight. You know how there's a little
- 0:28bit of a bug and you think I'll be fine, I'll be fine.
- 0:30And you push it away and you keep on ploughing on ahead and
- 0:33then it finally catches up with you.
- 0:35Yeah, that was this morning. I woke up and I thought, Oh
- 0:38dear, I'm not going to be able to read the Bible today for the
- 0:40podcast, but here I am. How many?
- 0:433 cups of tea later and I am ready to rock'n'roll.
- 0:47So we're going to read. And today we continue reading
- 0:50through the book of John and we will be hearing about Jesus in
- 0:54this this festival time when there's lots of festivals in
- 0:57Jerusalem and Jesus is teaching and interacting with people
- 1:01around all the thoughts that come to mind as to celebrate
- 1:04these big moments in their history as the people of Israel.
- 1:09So how about let us read it together, friends, Let us read
- 1:12together John Chapter 7. After this, Jesus travelled
- 1:27around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea
- 1:31where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death.
- 1:34But soon it was time for the Jewish festival of shelters.
- 1:37And Jesus brothers said to him, Leave here and go to Judea,
- 1:42where your followers can see your miracles.
- 1:44You can't become famous if you hide like this.
- 1:47If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the
- 1:50world. For even his brothers didn't
- 1:53believe in him. Jesus replied, Now is not the
- 1:57right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.
- 2:01The world can't hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it
- 2:06of doing evil. You go on.
- 2:09I'm not going to this festival because my time has not yet
- 2:12come. After saying these things, Jesus
- 2:16remained in Galilee. But after his brothers left for
- 2:19the temple, Jesus also went, though secretly staying out of
- 2:24public view. The Jewish leaders tried to find
- 2:27him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.
- 2:31There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds.
- 2:34Some argued he's a good man, but others said he's nothing but a
- 2:39fraud who deceives the people. But no one had the courage to
- 2:43speak favourably about him in public, for they were afraid of
- 2:47getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.
- 2:50Then midway through the festival, Jesus went up to the
- 2:53temple and began to teach. The people were surprised when
- 2:57they heard him. How does he know so much when he
- 3:00hasn't been trained, they asked. Sir, Jesus told them.
- 3:05My message is not my own. It comes from God who sent me.
- 3:09Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my
- 3:12teaching is from God or is merely my own.
- 3:16Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves,
- 3:20But a person who seeks to honour the one who sent him speaks
- 3:23truth, not lies. Moses gave you the law, but none
- 3:28of you obeys it. In fact, you were trying to kill
- 3:31me, the crowd replied, Your demon possessed who's trying to
- 3:36kill you? Jesus replied, I did 1 miracle
- 3:41on the Sabbath, and you were amazed.
- 3:44But you work on the Sabbath too, when you obey Moses Law of
- 3:47circumcision. Actually, the tradition of
- 3:50circumcision began with the patriarchs long before the law
- 3:53of Moses. For if the correct time for
- 3:57circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do
- 4:01it so as not to break the Law of Moses.
- 4:04So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the
- 4:07Sabbath? Look beneath the surface so you
- 4:10can judge correctly. Some of the people who lived in
- 4:14Jerusalem started to ask each other, Isn't this the man
- 4:17they're trying to kill? But here he is speaking in
- 4:21public, and they say nothing to him.
- 4:24Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?
- 4:28But how could he be? For we know where this man comes
- 4:31from. When the Messiah comes, he will
- 4:34simply appear. No one will know where he comes
- 4:37from. While Jesus was teaching in the
- 4:40temple, he called out, yes, you know me and you know where I
- 4:45come from, but I'm not here on my own.
- 4:48The one who sent me is true. And you don't know him, but I
- 4:53know him because I come from him.
- 4:56And he sent me to you. Then the leaders tried to arrest
- 5:01him, but no one laid a hand on him because his time had not yet
- 5:06come. Many among the crowds at the
- 5:09temple believed in him. After all, they said, would you
- 5:13expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man
- 5:16has done? When the Pharisees heard that
- 5:20the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading
- 5:23priests sent temple guards to arrest Jesus.
- 5:27But Jesus told them, I will be with you only a little longer,
- 5:32then I will return to the one who sent me.
- 5:35You will search for me, but not find me, and you cannot go where
- 5:39I'm going. The Jewish leaders were puzzled
- 5:42by the statement. Where is he planning to go?
- 5:45They asked. Is he thinking of leaving the
- 5:48country and going to the Jews in other lands?
- 5:51Maybe he will even teach the Greeks.
- 5:54What does he mean when he says you will search for me but not
- 5:57find me, and you cannot go where I'm going?
- 6:03On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and
- 6:07shouted to the crowds, Anyone who is thirsty may come to me.
- 6:13Anyone who believes in me may come and drink.
- 6:17For the scriptures declare rivers of living water will flow
- 6:22from his heart. When he said Living Water, he
- 6:26was Speaking of the Spirit who would be given to everyone
- 6:29believing in Him. But the Spirit had not yet been
- 6:31given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.
- 6:37When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared,
- 6:41Surely this man is the prophet we've been expecting.
- 6:45Others said He is the Messiah. Still others said, But he can't
- 6:50be. Will the Messiah come from
- 6:52Galilee? For the Scriptures clearly state
- 6:55that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David and
- 6:59Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.
- 7:03So the crowd was divided about him.
- 7:05Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.
- 7:11When the temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus,
- 7:14the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, Why didn't
- 7:18you bring him in? We have never heard anyone speak
- 7:22like this, the guards responded. Have you been LED astray too?
- 7:27The Pharisees mocked. Is there a single one of us
- 7:30rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?
- 7:33This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the
- 7:37law. God's curse is on them.
- 7:40Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier,
- 7:44spoke up. Is it legal to convict a man
- 7:47before he was given a hearing? He asked.
- 7:50They replied, Are you from Galilee too?
- 7:54Search the Scriptures and see for yourself.
- 7:57No prophet ever comes from Galilee.
- 8:01Then the meeting broke up and everybody went home.
- 8:15My Lord Jesus, there certainly was confusion about who you
- 8:18were. There you were breaking all
- 8:21these rules and people were trying to do what they could to
- 8:24put you in one basket or another.
- 8:26But oh, our mighty God, a wonderful Saviour, a beautiful
- 8:33Lord, you defy any categorization.
- 8:37You are more than we could possibly imagine.
- 8:42And we know that you are the Messiah, you are the Son of God,
- 8:47you are God himself, and we worship you, and we put you at
- 8:53the highest place above every other name, and let our knee bow
- 8:58to no one but you, our wonderful God.
- 9:02So we worship you today and pray all of these things in your
- 9:06precious and holy name. Amen.
