- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: On today's episode, we're going to talk about
- 0:06superfoods. Or are they really snake
- 0:08oils? Or why your acai bowl won't
- 0:11cure cancer? And also why you should maybe stop
- 0:14listening to your friend who sells sea moss on
- 0:17Instagram.
- 0:21I'm Dr. Terry Simpson, your chief medical explanationist,
- 0:24and this is for Q Fork
- 0:27University, where we bust myths, make sense of the
- 0:29madness, and teach you a little bit about food and
- 0:32medicine.
- 0:37Let's start with a harsh truth. The
- 0:40term superfood means absolutely
- 0:43nothing in science. It's a marketing term
- 0:45born in the early 2000s, fueled by
- 0:48desperate food companies and Gwyneth
- 0:51Paltrow's glowing skin.
- 0:54What gets labeled a superfood? Maybe a
- 0:57study, maybe a molecule, maybe a press release.
- 1:00And suddenly blueberries are the key to immortality.
- 1:03And if you're not spooning chia seeds into your overnight
- 1:06oats, you must want heart disease.
- 1:09Now don't get me wrong, I love blueberries. I think
- 1:12they're great. I do have chia seeds in my overnight
- 1:15oats. And I love avocados. They're delicious,
- 1:18but that doesn't make them magical.
- 1:21And the superfood label is just a health
- 1:23halo with a price tag.
- 1:26Let's pick on turmeric for a m minute. People love
- 1:29to say it cures inflammation. Many people
- 1:32approach me on TikTok and say what should they do with turmeric?
- 1:35Because they have inflammation. And there are thousands
- 1:38of articles that cite curcumin, which is
- 1:41turmeric's active compound, as anti
- 1:43inflammatory. Here's the
- 1:46Curcumin doesn't absorb well in your gut.
- 1:49Your gut treats it like an uninvited guest. Clinical
- 1:52trials mixed at best. Most are funded
- 1:55by supplement companies with more turmeric to sell than
- 1:58data to show. And now the part they
- 2:01really don't put on the turmeric
- 2:04has been linked to liver failure. There
- 2:07are multiple case reports of turmeric induced
- 2:09hepatitis in even otherwise healthy
- 2:12individuals, especially when mixed with alcohol or
- 2:15when taken in high dosed supplement form.
- 2:18So if you think downing a turmeric shot after a night of
- 2:21tequila will detox your liver fork, no.
- 2:25That golden drink might actually damage it.
- 2:28And in cases, it's even led to urgent liver
- 2:31transplantation. So here's my Keep
- 2:34your liver. It's the only one you've got. And turmeric will
- 2:37not grow you another. And maybe be the designated
- 2:40driver. I mean, it's time to grow up.
- 2:42Let's talk about a couple of other darlings in the wellness world. Let's talk
- 2:45about sea moss. People love it for thyroid
- 2:48support, gut health and vibrations, whatever those
- 2:51are. Sure, sea moss contains
- 2:53iodine and some trace minerals, but take
- 2:56too much and your thyroid's going to shut
- 2:59down. There's nothing like hypothyroidism
- 3:02leading to cardiac arrhythmias. And, you know, that's
- 3:05kind of the opposite of good vibes. And then
- 3:08there's RFK Jr. S favorite
- 3:10raw milk, the new status symbol for
- 3:13crunchy TikTok wellness warriors. Look,
- 3:16I get the nostalgia, but, uh, this isn't
- 3:19a return to tradition. It's a return to
- 3:22listeria, salmonella, escherichia
- 3:24coli, campylobacter, and tuberculosis.
- 3:28You know, pasteurization wasn't invented to ruin
- 3:31your rustic milk aesthetic. It was invented
- 3:34to prevent deaths. Raw milk
- 3:36causes miscarriages, sepsis, kidney failure,
- 3:39and death in children. If you're
- 3:42drinking unpasteurized milk because someone online says it
- 3:45has more nutrient value or more enzyme, ask
- 3:48them how many funerals those enzymes have been to.
- 3:51And then pasteurize your milk. Because the truth of the
- 3:53matter is there is no more nutrient value in
- 3:56unpasteurized raw milk at all.
- 3:59But there are bacteria. And I don't care how good the
- 4:02farm looks until you can actually get a
- 4:05microbiologist out there, your best
- 4:08is pasteurization. You
- 4:11know, here's the part where I sound boring, but actually
- 4:14give some good advice. Like eat mostly
- 4:17plants. Prioritize whole foods over ultra
- 4:19processed. Use olive oil like an
- 4:22Italian grandmother. Get your fiber if you need it from
- 4:25powders, that's fine, but it's better from real food. And
- 4:28supplements are okay, but legumes are better. And
- 4:31don't fear carbs. Fear
- 4:33nonsense. The Mediterranean diet remains the
- 4:36most evidence backed dietary pattern on
- 4:39the planet. Not because it has superfoods,
- 4:42but because it has balance. Tomatoes, beans,
- 4:45whole grains, fish, olive oil. Not
- 4:48flashy, but dangerous. Deeply effective.
- 4:52So you do not need powdered lion's mane from the
- 4:55Himalayas. You need beans, lentils, chickpeas.
- 4:58Foods that have been sustaining civilization longer than
- 5:01those TikTok shirtless salesmen of supplements and
- 5:04scams have existed. Let's talk
- 5:06about lowering cholesterol.
- 5:09Soluble fiber from beans beats red
- 5:12yeast rice any day. And
- 5:15statins beat both of them. What about
- 5:18magnesium for blood pressure? It turns out that a cup of
- 5:21legumes, which is like beans, chickpeas,
- 5:24gives you a hefty magnesium dose, plus protein,
- 5:26plus fiber and no mystery additives. And
- 5:29if your body has enough magnesium, food
- 5:32doesn't cause it to take more and give you the well
- 5:35I need to go to the bathroom for this. And while
- 5:38vitamins might fill gaps, and vitamins are very important
- 5:41for people who are on GLP1 drugs. People who've had weight
- 5:44loss surgery, people who are pregnant are going to become pregnant. Or
- 5:47people on weird diets. Food gives you
- 5:50synergy, nutrients, working together like a jazz band,
- 5:53not like a solo act. So supplements have their
- 5:56place. But if you're skipping legumes and swallowing
- 5:58capsules, you're missing the point.
- 6:01Here's a few other little tricks. Bone broth. It's not
- 6:04magical. It's a decent source of collagen. But it
- 6:07will not erase wrinkles. It will not
- 6:10seal up your gut. It will not fix leaky
- 6:13gut. Goji berries. Overhyped,
- 6:15expensive raisins with a press agent. Acai
- 6:18bowls. Basically, it's sorbet with
- 6:21granola. Raw milk. Again,
- 6:23bacteria are not your friends. Beets for
- 6:26nitric oxide or beetroot powder.
- 6:29It's been helpful for elite athletes, but not your
- 6:32average couch potato. Matcha,
- 6:35Huberman's current favorite. Yep, it contains
- 6:37antioxidant. But if you're chasing youths, wear
- 6:40sunscreen. And you know what? Black tea works
- 6:43just as well. So superfoods are great
- 6:46clickbait. But real health isn't
- 6:48about one food, one supplement,
- 6:51one ground up beef heart. It's about
- 6:54patterns, consistency, and let's be
- 6:57honest, a lot less
- 6:59Instagrammable meals. So the
- 7:02next time someone tries to sell you health in a jar,
- 7:05just remember for Q.
- 7:10This podcast was researched and produced by me, Dr. Terri

- 7:30Distribution handled by my friends at simpler media. The

- 7:36Terra. Have a great week. Everybody be
- 7:39skeptical. Eat real food. We'll see you
- 7:42next week.
- 7:49Hey, Evo, what's your personal
- 7:51superfood? I'm going to give you mine. It's
- 7:54coffee, black, over roasted,
- 7:56epidemiologically sound.
- 8:00I'm strong to the finish. Cause I eat space
- 8:03spinach. I'm popped by the sailor.
- 8:06Um.
