- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon. This is episode number two eleven
- 0:20Speaker 1: and to in the show, Spencer, Dan and I are
- 0:23Speaker 1: celebrating spring turkey hunting season by sharing a few of
- 0:26Speaker 1: our latest turkey exploits and answering listeners submitted turkey hunting questions.
- 0:44Speaker 1: All right, welcome to another episode of the Wired to
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by Sick of Gear. And
- 0:51Speaker 1: today on the show, we're doing our what's kind of
- 0:55Speaker 1: become like our annual Turkey episode and joining me we
- 1:00Speaker 1: got my buddy Dan Johnson and Spencer new Hearth. Thanks
- 1:05Speaker 1: guys for making this happen. We're recording late today because Dan,
- 1:10Speaker 1: You've got a sick kid again. Feel like this happens
- 1:13Speaker 1: every week. Kids, the kids. What are you doing with
- 1:17Speaker 1: these kids that they're constantly in the infirmary? Uh, you
- 1:21Speaker 1: gotta work them. I mean that's how you build up
- 1:23Speaker 1: their tolerance. Like you know, clean out the garage and
- 1:26Speaker 1: start you know, start the yard work and you know,
- 1:30Speaker 1: vacuum and do all the chores that I don't want
- 1:32Speaker 1: to do. That's why, kid, That's why people have kids. Okay,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and so it's the fact that they're slightly overworked that
- 1:40Speaker 1: they're under the weather. Now, yeah, it could be that's
- 1:43Speaker 1: their fault. They're not conditioned for it. You're such a
- 1:48Speaker 1: great role model from his parents. How not to raise
- 1:53Speaker 1: kids is the book that I would Yeah, yeah, man,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I was on baby duty tonight because my wife was
- 2:01Speaker 1: playing on a volleyball tournament. So I had to bathe
- 2:04Speaker 1: him and change him and feed him and put him
- 2:07Speaker 1: down all my own and I managed. Yeah, I managed
- 2:12Speaker 1: to do it with no major emergencies or issues. So
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm giving myself a pad in the back. Um, Spencer,
- 2:21Speaker 1: still no kids for you, huh No, no surprises yet,
- 2:24Speaker 1: still no kids. If one show would all that would
- 2:27Speaker 1: be the case. So yeah, yeah, hey, speaking of uh well,
- 2:31Speaker 1: not really speaking of anything, but before we get into
- 2:33Speaker 1: anything of real substance, I was just reminded. I don't
- 2:37Speaker 1: know why this reminded me of this, um, but I
- 2:40Speaker 1: wanted to make sure we we did a little bit
- 2:42Speaker 1: of like housekeeping before we dove into turkeys. Um, because
- 2:48Speaker 1: Tuesday May in Detroit, I'm gonna be at a back
- 2:54Speaker 1: country Hunters and Anglers camp fire storytelling event. Um. So
- 2:58Speaker 1: these things have been uh starting to pop up across
- 3:01Speaker 1: the country. There was a really big one at the
- 3:03Speaker 1: b h A Rendezvous in Boise, Idaho two weeks ago,
- 3:07Speaker 1: at the Big Rendezvous event. Um. But we've got one
- 3:11Speaker 1: in Detroit at the Philson Store in Detroit, and I'm
- 3:14Speaker 1: gonna be one of the storytellers there spinning the yarn
- 3:18Speaker 1: of some sort. I'm not what story or what stories
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell, but people should definitely come. Uh. It
- 3:26Speaker 1: is going to be, like I said, Tuesday, the first
- 3:30Speaker 1: forty tickets sold are going to be invited to like
- 3:32Speaker 1: a v I P meet and greet with the storytellers
- 3:36Speaker 1: such as myself and others. Um. That's gonna be at
- 3:38Speaker 1: the Philson Store from five thirty to six thirty, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: then after that the main event is going to be
- 3:44Speaker 1: at the Detroit Bus Company, which I don't know if
- 3:46Speaker 1: that's a brewery or if that's a theater or it's
- 3:49Speaker 1: some kind of venue, but it's called Detroit Bus Company.
- 3:52Speaker 1: It's in Corktown. It's from seven to nine o'clock Tuesday,
- 3:56Speaker 1: May fifteen. So if you live in Michigan or Ohio,
- 3:59Speaker 1: over or Ontario or somewhere close to Detroit, you should
- 4:02Speaker 1: definitely come out for the b h A storytelling event. Um,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I'll be there. Ronnie Bam who has been on the
- 4:09Speaker 1: Meat Eater podcast and he runs a hunting dog podcast.
- 4:12Speaker 1: He's gonna be telling a story. Tom McGraw is on
- 4:14Speaker 1: the national board for b h A. He's gonna be there.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Um a whole still of other folks, so it should
- 4:20Speaker 1: be good. Um, you might be sick of my stories
- 4:23Speaker 1: now though, I guess if you listen to this podcast,
- 4:25Speaker 1: But just in case you're not, that's my promo for
- 4:28Speaker 1: the day. Um turkeys, though, I wanted to start our
- 4:34Speaker 1: episode with two things. I want to talk about a
- 4:37Speaker 1: bunch of stories turkey ding stories because I know that
- 4:40Speaker 1: Dan you've got some new stories, and Spencer you've got
- 4:42Speaker 1: some new stories. I've got a little of a preview
- 4:45Speaker 1: story when it comes to turkeys. We've got a bunch
- 4:48Speaker 1: of questions from listeners about turkeys that people sent in
- 4:51Speaker 1: tonight that I want us to tackle. Um. But I
- 4:54Speaker 1: also want to share a few turkey fun facts and
- 4:57Speaker 1: a couple of good quotes. Um, have either one of
- 4:59Speaker 1: you guys read the book The Tenth Legion by Tom Kelly.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I'm not no, have you either of you heard of it? Nope? No, Okay, Well,
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's kind of like the holy text of turkey hunting.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I've been recommended this book over and over by so
- 5:16Speaker 1: many people. It's kind of this legendary book. If there's
- 5:20Speaker 1: any book on turkey hunting that people should read, this
- 5:23Speaker 1: is the one that people always tell me, you gotta
- 5:24Speaker 1: read this one. So I finally started reading. I haven't
- 5:26Speaker 1: finished it yet, but I'm getting into it and I'm
- 5:29Speaker 1: really enjoying it so far. Um, So I want to
- 5:31Speaker 1: read a couple of quotes from that that kind of
- 5:33Speaker 1: set the stage for why turkey hunting is worth having
- 5:37Speaker 1: a podcast about here today. So here's here's the first quote.
- 5:41Speaker 1: This is the author talking about turkey, and he said,
- 5:44Speaker 1: the first turkey that ever came to me on the
- 5:46Speaker 1: ground did it a long time ago. I sat there
- 5:48Speaker 1: with my handshaking and my breath short and my heart
- 5:52Speaker 1: hammering so hard. I couldn't understand why he could not
- 5:54Speaker 1: hear it. The last turkey that came to me last
- 5:57Speaker 1: spring had exactly the same effect. And the day that
- 6:00Speaker 1: this does not happen to me is the day that
- 6:03Speaker 1: I quit. That's quote number one. Now here's the second
- 6:08Speaker 1: thing he says about turkey hunting. And there he's talking
- 6:11Speaker 1: about how turkeys can sometimes get their hooks India. And
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm saying this metaphorically, and that you can become just
- 6:17Speaker 1: addicted to turkey hunting, as I think all three of
- 6:20Speaker 1: us are. But there's also highs and lows. And I
- 6:23Speaker 1: think that it's gonna actually apply to deer hunting to um.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So I'm curious to hear if this resonates with you guys.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But here, here he is talking about those that are
- 6:30Speaker 1: obsessed with turkey hunting. Quote. He will experience moments of
- 6:35Speaker 1: tragedy of such a depth and feeling as to preclude
- 6:38Speaker 1: them from having been written by anyone but Euripides. And
- 6:41Speaker 1: he will exult in periods of piercing rapture previously understood
- 6:45Speaker 1: only by willing Christian martyrs being eaten by willing lions.
- 6:50Speaker 1: He will operate primarily in a climate not of desire,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but of compulsion. This is painfully evident in my own case.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I do not hunt turkeys because I want to. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: hunt them because I have to. I would really, I
- 7:05Speaker 1: would really rather not do it, but I am helpless
- 7:07Speaker 1: in the grip of this compulsion. I feel like that
- 7:12Speaker 1: perfectly describes me as a deer hunter. Uh, moments of
- 7:16Speaker 1: great tragedy. Uh, not really a desire, just a compulsion.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Can't help. But doing it, I'm obsessed with it is
- 7:24Speaker 1: just fully gripping. Does that speak to it? All day?
- 7:29Speaker 1: And yeah? For white tails, Uh, not so much. For
- 7:33Speaker 1: turkeys maybe maybe oh seven years ago, ten years ago,
- 7:37Speaker 1: when my wife wasn't hunting with me, I was that
- 7:41Speaker 1: guy who would go out from morning until night basically
- 7:46Speaker 1: and just move around, set up, move, set up, move,
- 7:49Speaker 1: set up, move, run and gun all day long for turkeys.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And now, if I was to hunt turkeys like that
- 7:57Speaker 1: last quote, my wife would not be joining me ever,
- 8:00Speaker 1: because I just wear out. You've slowed with age. No,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I have a partner now who doesn't who doesn't hunt
- 8:10Speaker 1: the same way that I hunt, and I like hunting
- 8:13Speaker 1: with her, So I have to change my approach to
- 8:16Speaker 1: it to accommodate her needs. You know what I mean?
- 8:20Speaker 1: This is an opportunity for me to get my wife
- 8:22Speaker 1: involved in hunting, and so I'm going to change it now.
- 8:28Speaker 1: When my wife's not there with me. I'm I'm like,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I'm still moving right. But because now I have a
- 8:36Speaker 1: sidekick with me when it comes to turkey hunting, I
- 8:40Speaker 1: change it a little bit because you can't take someone
- 8:43Speaker 1: who is not as passionate about something and just dive
- 8:47Speaker 1: in and go hard. She likes the turkey hunt, but
- 8:50Speaker 1: she's not like we are. When it comes to that,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I hear you and that's that's cool, That's that's it's
- 8:56Speaker 1: it's been fun to be able to hear about you
- 8:57Speaker 1: talking about getting her into it and how she's been
- 9:00Speaker 1: going it over the years. Um, I can. I can
- 9:02Speaker 1: totally get that. And what about you, Spencer, do you
- 9:05Speaker 1: still have the fire or are you taking your wife out?
- 9:09Speaker 1: Or where do you stand when it comes to the
- 9:11Speaker 1: turkey hunting obsession? Uh? I would say for myself, it's
- 9:16Speaker 1: like less about the turkeys and more about what spring means. Um,
- 9:22Speaker 1: it's like months of cabin fever and then this is
- 9:26Speaker 1: something that breaks that. And especially this year, we had
- 9:30Speaker 1: a blizzard that was just like ten days ago. Um,
- 9:33Speaker 1: so to go out like a couple of mornings ago
- 9:36Speaker 1: and it was fifty and there were birds chirping, and
- 9:39Speaker 1: like you can hear the creeks rushing with water. Um,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's way way more special to me than like the
- 9:47Speaker 1: the kill or the reward or the chase of a
- 9:49Speaker 1: turkey that's kind of byproduct. Um, that stuff is super fun.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But if I like had to choose in a another
- 9:57Speaker 1: world where the turkey rut and the deer runds at
- 10:01Speaker 1: the same time, UM, I don't think I would ever
- 10:04Speaker 1: choose turkey hunting over deer hunting. But I know I wouldn't.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But because it's in the spring and everything else that
- 10:10Speaker 1: goes along with it, yeah, I'm really passionate about it.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Then Yeah, no, I agree with that. That is definitely
- 10:18Speaker 1: one of the coolest things about turkey hunting is is
- 10:20Speaker 1: that it just I feel like turkey hunting Harold's spring,
- 10:23Speaker 1: Like this spring is officially started when you start hearing
- 10:27Speaker 1: the turkey's gobble and you can get out there and
- 10:29Speaker 1: like you said, hearing the world wake up around you
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the morning. That's just a good feeling. But man,
- 10:37Speaker 1: there is something about gobbling turkeys that just gets you
- 10:43Speaker 1: fired up. And that the fact that you can talk
- 10:46Speaker 1: kind of that you can engage with with those critters
- 10:49Speaker 1: and go back and forth that his just like that's
- 10:51Speaker 1: super addicting to me, Like I I get. I know
- 10:54Speaker 1: we've talked about this in the past, Dan, how even
- 10:56Speaker 1: though we aren't pulling the trigger lots of times, it's
- 10:58Speaker 1: fun just to be out there to be part of it,
- 11:01Speaker 1: like just to take other people, to kind of call
- 11:03Speaker 1: for other people, get him out there, just to be
- 11:05Speaker 1: part of the hunt. Um. I love just being part
- 11:08Speaker 1: of the whole process. Um. So, man, I'm really glad
- 11:13Speaker 1: it started. My season just opened here yesterday, um and
- 11:18Speaker 1: I didn't go out. And actually, I have to save
- 11:20Speaker 1: my tag for the last weekend of this season because
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm doing a hunt with some folks coming down and
- 11:26Speaker 1: I want to save my tag for that. So I'm
- 11:27Speaker 1: kind of just scouting and I'm gonna take my nephew
- 11:31Speaker 1: out and try to get him a bird. And I'm
- 11:33Speaker 1: just gonna go out some mornings just sit out there
- 11:35Speaker 1: and just listen to birds and practice my calling and stuff.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Um And and that's almost just as much fun, just
- 11:41Speaker 1: like being in it is what I love. So Spencer,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you said that you had a snowstorm recently then you
- 11:49Speaker 1: got out there. You want to kick us off with
- 11:52Speaker 1: your turkey of the of the year story. Well, it
- 11:56Speaker 1: came on probably I think it was my Fiit hunt.
- 12:01Speaker 1: It was with my bow. Um. And so this fifth
- 12:07Speaker 1: hunt was a morning hunt out there before sunrise, trying
- 12:11Speaker 1: to find the roost, getting close and killing a bird
- 12:15Speaker 1: off the roost. And so far I've been unsuccessful doing that,
- 12:19Speaker 1: and I am quite an impatient turkey hunter. Um, if
- 12:24Speaker 1: if I can't get one in that first like two hours,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I have a super super hard time sitting in the blind.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Beyond that, like I have a hard enough time doing
- 12:34Speaker 1: an all days sit during the rut for deer. So
- 12:39Speaker 1: it's like pulling teeth for me to see noon on
- 12:45Speaker 1: my phone and still being a ground blind. So at
- 12:47Speaker 1: that point I'm typically running and gunning with with my bow.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And so this fifth hunt, it finally worked out. The
- 12:56Speaker 1: morning was unsuccessful. I had some ja coming to my decoys,
- 13:01Speaker 1: but but I passed because like I said earlier, I'm
- 13:04Speaker 1: not like super super into the kill and and just
- 13:09Speaker 1: getting a turkey. I can I can go without that
- 13:12Speaker 1: if it means passing on a jake or waiting for
- 13:15Speaker 1: a better opportunity. And so, uh, that afternoon, doing some
- 13:19Speaker 1: running and gunning, I caught a flock um going up
- 13:22Speaker 1: a hill and I talked into some seaters and that
- 13:26Speaker 1: the timing was like perfect. As soon as I talked
- 13:29Speaker 1: in the saters, it was probably thirty seconds later the
- 13:31Speaker 1: hen came through a shooting lane and following her was
- 13:35Speaker 1: the tom that I ended up shooting. It was no
- 13:37Speaker 1: calling involved. It was kind of what a lot of
- 13:40Speaker 1: my haunts end up being that it's it's more of
- 13:43Speaker 1: an ambush than like your typical bring them to you
- 13:48Speaker 1: set up. And uh, that was it. That was my
- 13:51Speaker 1: archery tag this season. Are you just trying to get
- 13:54Speaker 1: in front of them? Uh? It varies on the setup.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I saw these two key's leaving a field edge and
- 14:02Speaker 1: heading up this hill that I was quite familiar with,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and so uh with that, Yeah, I just ran to
- 14:08Speaker 1: the top of the hill and tucked in some seaters,
- 14:11Speaker 1: had a pretty good idea of where they were going,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and it worked out there nice. So when you're drawing
- 14:21Speaker 1: on a turkey in that kind of situation with your boat,
- 14:24Speaker 1: did you did you wait for him to have his
- 14:26Speaker 1: head down or look in the direction or do you
- 14:28Speaker 1: just draw and shoot and not worry about him catching
- 14:31Speaker 1: your moving or were you masked well enough in those seaters.
- 14:33Speaker 1: How did you get the shout off? Well, luckily I
- 14:36Speaker 1: had the hand come through first. Until once the hand
- 14:38Speaker 1: came through, I knew the others wouldn't be far behind.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So head had been the other way around that it
- 14:44Speaker 1: was Tom first hand. Second, I wouldn't have killed one. Um.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So the hand came through, re drew and the Tom
- 14:49Speaker 1: was right there. So it was just perfect timing for
- 14:53Speaker 1: it all to work out like that. Uh No, they
- 14:59Speaker 1: were just walking through it. They didn't know why I
- 15:01Speaker 1: was there, Like I said, it was just pure ambush.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Nice was um? What was the what? What? What's the
- 15:09Speaker 1: talk has been like so far? You said, this is
- 15:11Speaker 1: your fifth hunt, So five hunts so far, a lot
- 15:13Speaker 1: of gobbling so far and not a lot what's the
- 15:17Speaker 1: what's the kind of action been like on that front?
- 15:19Speaker 1: So the flocks have definitely um breaking up or they're
- 15:23Speaker 1: breaking up at this point. But it wasn't but like
- 15:26Speaker 1: a week ago when I was still seeing birds that were,
- 15:29Speaker 1: you know, twenty of them together at a time, and
- 15:32Speaker 1: mid day finding flocks that were staying out of the
- 15:35Speaker 1: snow and staying out of the rain, and you'd find
- 15:37Speaker 1: dozens of them, you know, tucked under the cedars and
- 15:39Speaker 1: stuff like that. But now that we have some consistent
- 15:42Speaker 1: weather and nice weather. UM, I'm finding a lot of
- 15:46Speaker 1: times that have been you know, gobbling midday and they're
- 15:49Speaker 1: coming out of the roost fired up, and usually it
- 15:52Speaker 1: seems like there's a lull like right after they come
- 15:54Speaker 1: out of the roost. They might go you know, thirty
- 15:56Speaker 1: or forty minutes and you don't hear them gobbling too much.
- 15:59Speaker 1: But the last couple of days, as I've been doing
- 16:02Speaker 1: some more scouting and stuff, it's been way more active
- 16:05Speaker 1: than you know, we saw a week ago when we
- 16:07Speaker 1: had lows and the teens and snow and stuff like that.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I love that sound how I was doing. UM. I
- 16:16Speaker 1: was talking to a bunch of people when I was
- 16:18Speaker 1: at p h A at the rendezvous about this. UM,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I'm curious what you guys would say. How would you describe,
- 16:26Speaker 1: going back to the talk of the gobbles, how would
- 16:29Speaker 1: you describe that moment when you hear the first gobble
- 16:32Speaker 1: of the day, Because I feel like for me that's
- 16:33Speaker 1: always special. UM, how would you describe what you're feeling
- 16:38Speaker 1: at that moment, Spencer when you hear that first one
- 16:40Speaker 1: fire off? Ah, Typically some relief that I know I'm
- 16:46Speaker 1: within a earshot of one. I would say that's always
- 16:49Speaker 1: my first reaction, like a good I know they're roosting
- 16:53Speaker 1: over there um. But beyond that, it's it's just exciting.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I love love their aggression, Like a pheasant goes off
- 17:02Speaker 1: and then they get right back at him, or you
- 17:04Speaker 1: hear an owl and they get right back at him,
- 17:06Speaker 1: or someone starts to pick up and they're getting at him.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I love that part of it that. I love how
- 17:13Speaker 1: furious they get about every other noise. I've always wondered,
- 17:16Speaker 1: like why why they do that? Like what's the what's
- 17:20Speaker 1: the evolutionary benefit for turkeys? The gobble like on any
- 17:25Speaker 1: loud noise like that. I'm I'm sure someone I'm sure
- 17:29Speaker 1: there's some kind of biologist they can speak to that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Have you guys ever heard anything for for why they
- 17:33Speaker 1: do that. I heard it's they call those a shock gobble,
- 17:39Speaker 1: is what I've heard, And I think it is because
- 17:42Speaker 1: they are so fired up. You know, as far as
- 17:47Speaker 1: you know, it's it's breeding season that anything they're they're
- 17:50Speaker 1: they're ready to gobble. So if like it's it's just weird,
- 17:55Speaker 1: And I don't like you said, I don't know any
- 17:57Speaker 1: scientific facts about it, but um, it's just like they're
- 18:02Speaker 1: so amped up this time of year that anything really
- 18:05Speaker 1: sets him off. Yeah, what about what about you for
- 18:08Speaker 1: that first gobble of the day, day, and what's going
- 18:10Speaker 1: through your head? Well, it just lets me know, just
- 18:14Speaker 1: like kind of what Spencer said about, Okay, now I
- 18:17Speaker 1: know I'm in the right spot or or and it
- 18:21Speaker 1: lets me know like it's game time now, right, I
- 18:24Speaker 1: gotta put my coffee down, I gotta pick up my call,
- 18:27Speaker 1: and it's you know, it's time to get serious and
- 18:30Speaker 1: and locate them. And then that next one goes off
- 18:33Speaker 1: and then okay, so if this one doesn't work, this
- 18:36Speaker 1: one's talking back to me. And then just they they
- 18:38Speaker 1: all kind of every time there's a gobble, it's almost
- 18:42Speaker 1: like another piece of the strategy has been put into place,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and and it just during that period of time that
- 18:48Speaker 1: first one lets me know, Okay, you know it's uh
- 18:53Speaker 1: time to time to get serious. Yeah. Yeah, I have
- 18:57Speaker 1: that same feeling too, Like I get in my head,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I feel like my little voice says like all right,
- 19:02Speaker 1: this game time, and then I think last times like
- 19:04Speaker 1: literally a smile that creeps onto my face when that
- 19:07Speaker 1: starts happening. Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah. So so I
- 19:11Speaker 1: heard you had a crazy hunt. Dan, you gotta tell
- 19:13Speaker 1: us what happened to you this weekend. Well, I'm gonna
- 19:17Speaker 1: start on Friday morning, right, And for a lot of people,
- 19:22Speaker 1: you know, especially the guys up north North Bioa that
- 19:25Speaker 1: are hunting, you know, turkey hunting in the snow. I've
- 19:27Speaker 1: seen plenty of pictures of guys posing with their turkeys
- 19:31Speaker 1: with a fan spread in about you know, two inches
- 19:34Speaker 1: three inches of snow. But when I stepped out of
- 19:38Speaker 1: the truck, I picked up my buddy. Um I stepped
- 19:42Speaker 1: out of the truck, it was twenty two degrees uh.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And this was not a turkey This was not a
- 19:48Speaker 1: blind hunt. We were just kind of walking this field
- 19:51Speaker 1: edge and set up in this fence row. And it
- 19:55Speaker 1: was the coldest turkey hunt I've ever been on. Typically,
- 19:58Speaker 1: you know, I'm used to hunting forty maybe forty low
- 20:01Speaker 1: forties in the mornings to you know, maybe the fifties
- 20:05Speaker 1: in the mornings and then that kind of warms up
- 20:07Speaker 1: gradually throughout the day. But it was freezing cold. So
- 20:10Speaker 1: I had all my uh late season deer hunting stuff
- 20:14Speaker 1: on and and the sun came up and they just
- 20:19Speaker 1: they started to gobble like crazy, and it was it
- 20:22Speaker 1: was money. It was like, I can't believe this is
- 20:24Speaker 1: gonna happen on the very first day. And I didn't.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I didn't even at this point have my turkey tags purchased.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I was specifically going to call for my buddy, and
- 20:32Speaker 1: I really hoped that one was gonna come his way. Um.
- 20:38Speaker 1: We we listened to him gobble. They hit the ground
- 20:42Speaker 1: and I hunt and live kind of by an airport,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and a plane went over right over where we were hunting,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and it shut every bird off. We could hear birch goblin,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, like a long ways away, nothing within, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: any of the properties that we could hunt on. The
- 21:00Speaker 1: birds shut off. We tried calling. I saw one pitch
- 21:03Speaker 1: down and he never worked. Or one turkey. I couldn't
- 21:07Speaker 1: tell if it was you know, Hen or Tom, but
- 21:11Speaker 1: it pitched down into the field. I couldn't see where
- 21:14Speaker 1: it went. We got up, We went back to behind
- 21:17Speaker 1: his house. He owns a little bit of property set
- 21:20Speaker 1: up in a blind started calling, had some more birds
- 21:23Speaker 1: talking to us. Nothing ever came in and uh, then
- 21:26Speaker 1: I had to go to kindergarten round up. Kindergarten round up.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I remember you mentioned the other day on your podcast.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I think, yeah, yeah, how did I go? Oh, kindergarten
- 21:38Speaker 1: round up? You know they it's basically a introduction to
- 21:44Speaker 1: kindergarten for a preschooler. My daughter was jacked up about
- 21:48Speaker 1: it because one of her preschool friends is in the
- 21:50Speaker 1: same class as her, and she's just really fired up
- 21:54Speaker 1: about going to kindergarten and learning all the cool stuff
- 21:57Speaker 1: that kindergarten, you know, gets gets to kindergarteners get to
- 22:01Speaker 1: learn about. So then we packed the whole family in
- 22:05Speaker 1: the car. We head south to my my white Tail Farms,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I guess you want to call him. This is typically
- 22:12Speaker 1: where we we set up. We went and me and
- 22:16Speaker 1: my wife drove into this cattle pasture that we've started
- 22:19Speaker 1: off with the last three years. Um, the first year
- 22:24Speaker 1: we started hunting in this spot, she got a turkey
- 22:27Speaker 1: right off the roost one morning. The next year, things
- 22:30Speaker 1: didn't work out, UM, and she was pregnant, so you
- 22:34Speaker 1: know she it was a little bit more difficult for her.
- 22:37Speaker 1: And then UM, this year we I went right up
- 22:42Speaker 1: on the timber. I didn't I wasn't I didn't put
- 22:44Speaker 1: the blind in the pasture. I put the blind right
- 22:47Speaker 1: against the fence line that separates the pasture from this
- 22:52Speaker 1: big section of timber um. And again we get in
- 22:59Speaker 1: there early. Uh we get chased by some cattle a
- 23:01Speaker 1: little bit, which is freaky if you guys have never
- 23:05Speaker 1: been chased by cattle or horses. And all you hear
- 23:08Speaker 1: is the coming at you louder louder and louder and louder,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and you can't see where they're at because it's pitch black.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And then you catch, you catch their eyes, and then
- 23:18Speaker 1: you gotta go, oh hey, you know, to get them.
- 23:21Speaker 1: You know they're chickens. So they turned around run away.
- 23:23Speaker 1: But anyway, you know right away, my my wife is
- 23:29Speaker 1: so tired because she's still breastfeeding throughout the night in
- 23:32Speaker 1: our little asshole, doesn't sleep very well, and uh so
- 23:38Speaker 1: she she falls asleep. And then it was funny because
- 23:41Speaker 1: I was looking at her right when that first gobble
- 23:44Speaker 1: that we talked about when and her eyes just slowly
- 23:46Speaker 1: open and got real big, and she's like, Okay, it's
- 23:50Speaker 1: time to do this. And I started calling and they
- 23:52Speaker 1: started responding, calling, responding, and then I could hear him
- 23:56Speaker 1: fly down and then they shut off and that was
- 24:02Speaker 1: that was it for that. The rest of that day, Um,
- 24:05Speaker 1: we bounced around to two more spots, did some calling,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and it was like an off switch got hit and
- 24:14Speaker 1: there was a ton of birds gobbling throughout the that morning.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But as soon as they flew down, it was over.
- 24:24Speaker 1: They I have a feeling that they were hend up
- 24:26Speaker 1: pretty bad. And and what I saw driving from the
- 24:29Speaker 1: road around the section was you would see a couple
- 24:33Speaker 1: of times out strutting in the field and they were
- 24:36Speaker 1: right there with all these hands. They weren't leaving their side.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So UM, and I'm not the best caller ever when
- 24:43Speaker 1: it comes to turkey calls, and so you know, so
- 24:47Speaker 1: instead of going out later that night, I basically just
- 24:50Speaker 1: hung around played with the kids. It was such a
- 24:53Speaker 1: beautiful day out, you know, as one of those days
- 24:55Speaker 1: where you can feel the warmth. Finally spring has, you know,
- 25:01Speaker 1: made it here. So I basically just yeah, hung outside
- 25:05Speaker 1: and played. Man. It was just it was really fun.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Um had a good meal with them, had a good
- 25:11Speaker 1: meal with the fam, my mom and stepdad and UM
- 25:16Speaker 1: just hung out. Went to bed that night. The middle
- 25:19Speaker 1: of the night, my son wakes up and he is
- 25:23Speaker 1: breathing really really weird. He's going like, I'm like, oh no,
- 25:28Speaker 1: not pneumonia again, because he had pneumonia. And I'm just like,
- 25:33Speaker 1: oh my god, you know, not not trying to act selfishly,
- 25:37Speaker 1: but I was like, oh my god, it's over right.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to hang out
- 25:43Speaker 1: here with him, you know, that's what a dad does.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So we gave him some tile and all. He settled down.
- 25:48Speaker 1: His breathing kind of went back to normal, his temperature
- 25:51Speaker 1: went away, and I was just like, man, this is weird.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So I went back to sleep. My alarm went off,
- 25:56Speaker 1: so I went over to my wife, who was sleeping.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I was like, so, what do you want me to do?
- 26:02Speaker 1: I if we have to go back home, I still
- 26:06Speaker 1: have to go out and get the blind because I
- 26:09Speaker 1: don't want to leave it up over, you know, until
- 26:12Speaker 1: who knows when I'm going to be back, and with
- 26:14Speaker 1: all the theft problems that I've been having on the property,
- 26:16Speaker 1: I don't want to leave it up there for potentially
- 26:18Speaker 1: a month. So my wife's like, just go hunt and
- 26:23Speaker 1: then if as soon as you know, whenever whatever happens,
- 26:28Speaker 1: pack it up and then we'll go. Well, I get
- 26:31Speaker 1: a text, so so anyway, I I leave, I go
- 26:35Speaker 1: and I go to the blind. I get a text.
- 26:37Speaker 1: My son's up and he's doing fine. Right, so there's
- 26:40Speaker 1: no problem. Well, the turkeys weren't going as crazy as
- 26:45Speaker 1: they were the the day before, the morning before, but
- 26:50Speaker 1: they were more responsive. So I would call, they would answer.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I would call, they were answered, and they were roughly
- 26:58Speaker 1: in the same spot. So typically they are across this
- 27:02Speaker 1: this valley. They roosted up on these big oak trees
- 27:06Speaker 1: and then they pitched down to the bottom and they
- 27:08Speaker 1: work their way up to this cattle pasture. And I
- 27:12Speaker 1: was calling, responding, calling, responding. I heard him fly down.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Call a little bit, respond, call a little bit. Respond.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It quieted down just for a minute, and all this happened,
- 27:22Speaker 1: you know, like ten minutes, right. And this is my
- 27:27Speaker 1: absolute favorite part of turkey hunting is when you can
- 27:32Speaker 1: hear them strut before you can see them or before
- 27:37Speaker 1: they gobble, so you're you're hearing that mm hmmmm. And
- 27:44Speaker 1: he gobbled that for the first time. I don't know
- 27:46Speaker 1: if he saw me walk in, and that's why he
- 27:49Speaker 1: didn't gobble out of the roost. But this bird came
- 27:51Speaker 1: from a completely different direction, and he hammered at about
- 27:55Speaker 1: fifty yards and it's one of those where you get
- 27:58Speaker 1: these this team goal up your you know, up your back,
- 28:02Speaker 1: you're really fired up. I'm in a blind and I froze,
- 28:06Speaker 1: like he can see me through the blind, you know
- 28:08Speaker 1: what I mean, Like if I move now, he's gonna
- 28:10Speaker 1: he's gonna see me. But I was in a blind,
- 28:12Speaker 1: So so he called once and I couldn't see him, right,
- 28:17Speaker 1: I'm slowly slowly leaning my head out of the blind,
- 28:21Speaker 1: and so I don't see him. I don't see him
- 28:25Speaker 1: any he but I can still hear the boom and
- 28:29Speaker 1: then you can hear him strut and drag his tips
- 28:31Speaker 1: of his wings in the leaves right making that noise.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It's just and it's not windy, so it's perfect. You
- 28:38Speaker 1: know he's there, but you can't see him. So I
- 28:41Speaker 1: get out. I put my gun down, I get out
- 28:44Speaker 1: my slate call that I've had for like ten or
- 28:47Speaker 1: fifteen years. Man, it's one of the first slate calls
- 28:49Speaker 1: ever bought. And it was just a He goes again,
- 28:56Speaker 1: and he's like thirty yards from the blind this time,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and I I look out and I can see his
- 29:01Speaker 1: head in his end um and he's in full strut.
- 29:06Speaker 1: He comes out of full strut and he's trying to
- 29:08Speaker 1: make his way through the fence to my decoys that
- 29:11Speaker 1: are out in the cattle pasture. So he finally found him,
- 29:15Speaker 1: and and I'm like, I am not set up for
- 29:18Speaker 1: this because my window was into the timber with the
- 29:21Speaker 1: blind and so I had to go to the side.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I had to open the blind. Um it's like a
- 29:27Speaker 1: big t zipper, so the zipper runs up and then
- 29:30Speaker 1: out and then that it all folds down. So I
- 29:33Speaker 1: had to go up to the top and open like
- 29:36Speaker 1: four inches over and four inches down. And I took
- 29:40Speaker 1: the twenty gage and I stuck it out the window,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and he made his way through the through the fence,
- 29:45Speaker 1: and he took maybe five steps and boom. And I
- 29:51Speaker 1: don't like if I was to spine a deer right
- 29:56Speaker 1: and just hit his off button, I would never laugh
- 29:59Speaker 1: at it. For some reason, I don't. But when you
- 30:01Speaker 1: shoot a turkey and you shoot him good and you
- 30:04Speaker 1: know they're dead, there's a little part of me that laughs.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And I know this sounds bad, but he just went
- 30:10Speaker 1: and this like no flopping, like just no flopping I
- 30:14Speaker 1: hit him with the full load and he shut off.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And I was just like I I was on cloud nine,
- 30:23Speaker 1: Like if I had tap dance shoes on, i'd be
- 30:25Speaker 1: I would have been tap dancing in the timber, you know.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I was like singing songs and I was just like
- 30:31Speaker 1: I just I don't know. It turned. It turned everything
- 30:36Speaker 1: that was bad in life good at that moment. And
- 30:39Speaker 1: I don't know it was. It was. It was a
- 30:42Speaker 1: good beard man, twenty six pounds, the longest longest spurs
- 30:46Speaker 1: I've ever had on a turkey at an inch in
- 30:49Speaker 1: three sixteenth and he had a ten inch beard, which
- 30:52Speaker 1: is above average for what I typically shoot. So uh,
- 30:57Speaker 1: great great bird. And when I was going to clean
- 31:00Speaker 1: him out, he had a spur from another bird wedged
- 31:06Speaker 1: in his one of his breasts that was broken off.
- 31:09Speaker 1: That is crazy. I saw you post that. That's awesome. Yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I wish I would have taken a picture of it
- 31:15Speaker 1: because it looked like it had been there for a month.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So there was it was about oh a penny maybe
- 31:23Speaker 1: a nickel size fester, and I was digging in it
- 31:27Speaker 1: because I'm like, what is that? And I pulled this
- 31:29Speaker 1: hard thing out of it. I got a needle nose
- 31:31Speaker 1: plier pulled this hard thing out of it, kind of
- 31:34Speaker 1: shook it off, and it was the tip of another spur,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and I was like, I've never seen that before. I've
- 31:38Speaker 1: seen birds who have been shot and then they get
- 31:42Speaker 1: that fester and you pretty much can't even use the breast.
- 31:45Speaker 1: So I just cut that little piece off and threw it,
- 31:47Speaker 1: threw it away and and saved the rest of the meat.
- 31:49Speaker 1: But man, just you know, there's this song by a
- 31:54Speaker 1: band called the Nappy Roots, and it's called like good
- 31:58Speaker 1: Day and it's gonna be a good day and all
- 32:00Speaker 1: my problem is gonna go away. And that song was
- 32:04Speaker 1: just played in my head, and I don't know, it
- 32:06Speaker 1: was a good days. The turk hunt's alve out right there. Man.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Then they did the thing like they did the thing
- 32:13Speaker 1: for me. I just wanted to do that thing. That's cool.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Are you gonna get to bill to go out anymore
- 32:20Speaker 1: and take your wife out, try your hair bird or anything. Man.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I went out and I took her to I went
- 32:27Speaker 1: back home. So I shot my bird at six thirty five,
- 32:31Speaker 1: six is right. So I the after I shot this bird,
- 32:36Speaker 1: and I took two minutes to celebrate its life, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 1: and think, you know, like, man, this is awesome. I
- 32:42Speaker 1: get to do with this. I shut down my celebration,
- 32:47Speaker 1: I shut down my blind I got I pulled my
- 32:50Speaker 1: truck back that there, packed everything up, went back to
- 32:53Speaker 1: the house, got my wife because my son was feeling
- 32:56Speaker 1: better at this point. We went out to the second
- 32:59Speaker 1: place that we always go and when she shuts the
- 33:03Speaker 1: door and we had to the tailgate to load the
- 33:06Speaker 1: gun and pack up, we heard a gobble and I'm like,
- 33:10Speaker 1: this bird is right where we are gonna go. That's
- 33:14Speaker 1: gonna be money. She's gonna you know, she's gonna get
- 33:16Speaker 1: a bird today too. So we went. We walked over there,
- 33:19Speaker 1: set up and it was the same bird man that
- 33:21Speaker 1: was hend up the day before. And we called and
- 33:24Speaker 1: he gobbled. We called and he gobbled, and he didn't
- 33:26Speaker 1: get any closer, and finally he shut off, and uh
- 33:30Speaker 1: we we bounced around to a couple more spots. But
- 33:33Speaker 1: then ultimately this was on a Sunday, so we had to,
- 33:38Speaker 1: uh we had to go back and uh get the
- 33:42Speaker 1: kids and head back home because the three day vacation
- 33:45Speaker 1: was over. Anymore weekends you can go, no, because we
- 33:50Speaker 1: we get second season shotguns. So I think tomorrow is
- 33:54Speaker 1: the last day. And I work, and she works, and
- 33:58Speaker 1: the kids, who knows they're gonna be feeling better at all?
- 34:01Speaker 1: So are My turkey season every year is three days.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I I give myself three days to get it done because, like,
- 34:13Speaker 1: like you guys know, I man, my elk hunting and
- 34:15Speaker 1: my white tail hunting this year are taking priorities along
- 34:19Speaker 1: with whatever other family vacations that we take. Um, so no,
- 34:24Speaker 1: it's it's three days for us, short and sweeten, you
- 34:28Speaker 1: got it done. Yep, absolutely, And it's so much fun. Man.
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's like, like like we all said earlier, I take
- 34:36Speaker 1: deer hunting really serious, but I'll punish myself if I
- 34:42Speaker 1: make a mistake in the deer woods. But if I
- 34:45Speaker 1: make a mistake in the turkey woods, man, I don't care.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I like I I honestly don't even care if I
- 34:49Speaker 1: kill a bird. I'm just out there, like Spencer said,
- 34:52Speaker 1: just to have a good time. Yeah, I agree, it's
- 34:54Speaker 1: it's so much lower pressure but a ton of fun.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Um and and and I don't hunt turkeys, like you said,
- 35:02Speaker 1: not nearly as obsessively, not nearly as much. But sometimes
- 35:05Speaker 1: I wish, you know, some guys that take it really seriously,
- 35:08Speaker 1: like this guy Tom Kelly, who wrote those quotes I
- 35:12Speaker 1: mentioned earlier. You know, guys hunt all spring, like two
- 35:15Speaker 1: months straight, all sorts of states. That would be a
- 35:20Speaker 1: ton of fun. Like sometimes I wish I could just
- 35:21Speaker 1: take like two or three weeks and just go from
- 35:23Speaker 1: state to state to state and just chase birds, because
- 35:26Speaker 1: I'm sure be high action. I mean, you're just it's
- 35:29Speaker 1: different than deer hunting. Lots of times you might deer
- 35:32Speaker 1: hunt for a rut week or whatever, and or of
- 35:36Speaker 1: that week might be you know, nothing monotonous, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 1: just being patient, waiting it out for something to happen.
- 35:44Speaker 1: While turkey hunting, it's almost always, not always, but almost
- 35:47Speaker 1: always action. Um it's a it's a good time. I've
- 35:51Speaker 1: never done it, but I certainly tried to extend my
- 35:54Speaker 1: turkey season as much as I can. I only get
- 35:55Speaker 1: one tag in Michigan, but I usually try to go
- 35:58Speaker 1: to Ohio for at least a day or two and
- 36:00Speaker 1: then and then every year anyone I can convince to
- 36:03Speaker 1: to let me go with them and call for them
- 36:04Speaker 1: or something, I do that. So so this year, like
- 36:07Speaker 1: I said, I'm taking a bunch of different people. So
- 36:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to get a salad. Like four weeks
- 36:13Speaker 1: the turkey hunting in this year, not not obviously hunting
- 36:15Speaker 1: every day, but getting out different several days a week,
- 36:19Speaker 1: going out with different people and stuff. And like I said,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I haven't got to actually go yet. Um, but I
- 36:25Speaker 1: did have a cool turkey experience the other day. UM.
- 36:29Speaker 1: On Sunday, I took my son on his first turkey
- 36:33Speaker 1: hunt quote unquote turkey hunt. UM. I bundled them up
- 36:38Speaker 1: firstly in the morning. He woke up Sunday morning and
- 36:40Speaker 1: I opened the door and let the dogs out, and
- 36:41Speaker 1: it was nice and warm out and I stood out
- 36:44Speaker 1: there waiting for the dog to take a dump, and
- 36:45Speaker 1: I heard a turkey gobble off the distance. I was like, oh,
- 36:48Speaker 1: it's on. So I went and grabbed Everett. There was
- 36:51Speaker 1: jacket on, grabbed a call and went out into the
- 36:53Speaker 1: backyard and went to the end of the yard, back
- 36:55Speaker 1: at the edge of the cornfield, and I just started yelping.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And then I was like, good a little. I had
- 37:01Speaker 1: three different gobblers going crazy, and because I was like
- 37:05Speaker 1: all right, so I just held Everett on one side
- 37:07Speaker 1: and he's looking at me with these big eyes, like,
- 37:09Speaker 1: what is this noise my dad's making? And and I
- 37:12Speaker 1: called these gobblers over towards the house and had one
- 37:15Speaker 1: of them actually come over the hill into view. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: obviously ever had no idea what was going on, but
- 37:20Speaker 1: it was pretty cool to me actually being out there
- 37:22Speaker 1: with my son for the very first time, um with
- 37:25Speaker 1: Tyrakese goblin. So that was a proud dad moment. And uh.
- 37:30Speaker 1: And then the next day I did go to this
- 37:33Speaker 1: property that I'm a new property that I'm gonna be
- 37:35Speaker 1: hunting in a couple of weeks with some folks, and um,
- 37:38Speaker 1: got out there, like I woke up at four in
- 37:40Speaker 1: the morning in my house, It's a two hour drive
- 37:42Speaker 1: this property. So I barreled out there four in the morning,
- 37:46Speaker 1: got there like just a daybreak, snuck out to this
- 37:49Speaker 1: little high point in the It's kind of where three
- 37:52Speaker 1: different fences fence roles all come together and you can
- 37:54Speaker 1: see into three different fence or sorry, you can see
- 37:57Speaker 1: into three different fields from this high point. And so
- 38:00Speaker 1: I sat there for the morning, did just a couple
- 38:02Speaker 1: of yelps just to try to get some stuff to
- 38:04Speaker 1: talk to hear where they might be roosted, and heard
- 38:07Speaker 1: a few birds roosted off in one direction, not quite
- 38:09Speaker 1: when I was I was hoping. I was thinking this
- 38:11Speaker 1: place would be loaded with them, um, but I heard
- 38:14Speaker 1: just one or two off in one corner. But after
- 38:18Speaker 1: like the first hour, maybe half hour hour, one bird
- 38:21Speaker 1: came out into the field, one nice big gobbler, and
- 38:24Speaker 1: then I saw like three four or five hens over there,
- 38:26Speaker 1: and then three jakes came out over there. And then
- 38:29Speaker 1: while I was watching them, I turned to look the
- 38:30Speaker 1: other direction, to the one of his other fields. I
- 38:33Speaker 1: see two gobblers come off the opposite hill over there,
- 38:35Speaker 1: and they start walking my direction, and then they come
- 38:38Speaker 1: through and then they disappear. And then that initial gobbler
- 38:42Speaker 1: walks all the way up towards me. And I had
- 38:43Speaker 1: just called, like I said, a few yelps kind of
- 38:46Speaker 1: right when I got there in the morning. He came
- 38:47Speaker 1: all the way to like within like thirty yards of
- 38:49Speaker 1: me and walked past, and I just watched him do
- 38:51Speaker 1: his thing. And you know how they get when they
- 38:54Speaker 1: think there should be hens somewhere nearby, but they can't
- 38:56Speaker 1: see it. He's stopped and he'd stick his neck up
- 38:58Speaker 1: and just spinning his turn his head in all directions,
- 39:01Speaker 1: looking looking looking nothing. That he'd walk ten yards and stopped,
- 39:05Speaker 1: put his head back up. Look look look. Um. That
- 39:08Speaker 1: was kind of fun because usually in that kind of
- 39:10Speaker 1: situation I would be shooting that bird, um, so that
- 39:14Speaker 1: would be end and ended. But in this case, it's
- 39:16Speaker 1: kind of like passing on a buck. I just got
- 39:19Speaker 1: to watch him do his thing up close, which was
- 39:21Speaker 1: fun and uh. And then two more gobblers came tearing
- 39:24Speaker 1: over from the third field over my direction, so I
- 39:27Speaker 1: saw like six different gobblers from that spot in the
- 39:29Speaker 1: first hour and a half or two hours a day.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And then I spent the rest of the day scouting
- 39:34Speaker 1: for white tails, and over the course of my walkings
- 39:37Speaker 1: and ramblings, I bumped into two other groups of three
- 39:41Speaker 1: gobblers strutting around with hens and stuff. So that was
- 39:45Speaker 1: fun just to see him and hear him and get
- 39:47Speaker 1: to get my blood pumped and primed for the rest
- 39:51Speaker 1: of the season. So that was my start to turkey hunt.
- 39:54Speaker 1: And then this weekend I'm gonna take my nephew up,
- 39:57Speaker 1: so hopefully we'll have a good turkey story to come
- 40:01Speaker 1: from that. Um. It's exciting stuff. I love it. And
- 40:07Speaker 1: now I think would be a good time for a
- 40:09Speaker 1: quick word from our partners at white Tail Properties. This
- 40:13Speaker 1: week with white Tail Properties, we are joined by Tim Woods,
- 40:17Speaker 1: a land specialist out of central Ohio, and Tim is
- 40:20Speaker 1: going to be telling us about how to better understand
- 40:22Speaker 1: what the deer hunting neighborhood is like around a potential property. Well,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I guess, you know, I guess there's there's a couple
- 40:29Speaker 1: different ways to look at it. If you're a nonresident
- 40:32Speaker 1: looking to buy out of states. Um, you've got to
- 40:34Speaker 1: trust your trust, your agent, you know us with white
- 40:36Speaker 1: Tail Properties, UM, this is what we do. UM. You know,
- 40:39Speaker 1: it's the fact that you know, I'm here in Ohio.
- 40:42Speaker 1: I've got my territory. Um. You know, I've got a
- 40:45Speaker 1: fairly large territory. But I'm pretty well grounded. And what
- 40:51Speaker 1: pockets of areas are good, you know, I mean great
- 40:54Speaker 1: word Ohio. Not everywhere in Ohio is good or even
- 40:57Speaker 1: the given states that you're looking for. So you've got
- 40:59Speaker 1: a trust, you trust your agents, um, and and let
- 41:03Speaker 1: them do the legwork for you. UM. And don't be
- 41:05Speaker 1: scared to walk properties, talk to neighbors, UM. And you know,
- 41:09Speaker 1: look at bragging boards and so forth, and that you know,
- 41:12Speaker 1: social media is a great way a lot of people.
- 41:14Speaker 1: You know, a lot of people like to talk about
- 41:15Speaker 1: their big deer. So you can get out there and
- 41:17Speaker 1: uh kind of scratch the surface a little bit and see,
- 41:20Speaker 1: um what a what a particular area is like, how
- 41:24Speaker 1: much pressure it gets, how many hunters are there. But
- 41:26Speaker 1: I would say that the biggest thing would be the
- 41:28Speaker 1: trust your agent, um when it comes to you know,
- 41:31Speaker 1: a high quality area. Um, you know, there's always gonna
- 41:35Speaker 1: be those areas where you have big landowners and very
- 41:38Speaker 1: little hunting pressure and guys that are killing high caliber deer.
- 41:42Speaker 1: So you know, again back to just trust your agent
- 41:45Speaker 1: and uh let them do the legwork for you and uh,
- 41:49Speaker 1: you know, put some boots on the ground, walk some
- 41:51Speaker 1: properties and go from there. If you'd like to learn
- 41:55Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Tim currently has
- 41:57Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit wait to old properties dot com
- 42:01Speaker 1: backslash woods. That's w O O d S. I pulled
- 42:09Speaker 1: some fun facts related turkeys that I want to drop
- 42:13Speaker 1: on you guys. Yeah, I I haven't done a ton
- 42:18Speaker 1: of you know, when it comes to white tails and stuff.
- 42:20Speaker 1: I read everything, right, we read all sorts of research
- 42:24Speaker 1: and literature on on white tails and all these articles
- 42:26Speaker 1: and stuff. I don't do a whole time turkey reading. Um,
- 42:30Speaker 1: but there's some interesting stuff. So get this. Did you
- 42:33Speaker 1: guys know that you can tell a bird's sex and
- 42:37Speaker 1: age from his droppings? Did you guys know that about
- 42:39Speaker 1: about turkeys? I did not know that. No, enlighten me. Yeah.
- 42:45Speaker 1: So male turkey droppings are j shaped and female turkey
- 42:50Speaker 1: droppings are spiral shaped. So you go out there and
- 42:53Speaker 1: you look for the poopy jay's and you know that's
- 42:55Speaker 1: a gobbler. And then the larger the diameter of the turd,
- 42:59Speaker 1: the older the bird. So remember that. Now. Have have
- 43:04Speaker 1: you heard guys say that about like what deer crab
- 43:08Speaker 1: looks like or what buck crap looks like versus doe crab.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I've heard. I've heard different kind of theories on that.
- 43:15Speaker 1: I've heard like the bigger, clumpier ones or bucks versus
- 43:19Speaker 1: your smaller, very separated palets would be doves. Um. Have
- 43:24Speaker 1: you heard something similar? Well, I think we've all kind
- 43:28Speaker 1: of heard that, like grandfather wisdom that yeah, this this
- 43:31Speaker 1: is what dear or this is what buck crap looks like.
- 43:34Speaker 1: It's the big stuff and this is doe crab the
- 43:36Speaker 1: little stuff. But in reality, I think what it is
- 43:40Speaker 1: um that when you're seeing like the stuff that looks
- 43:43Speaker 1: like it was made by a rabbit, that means that
- 43:46Speaker 1: they're eating um like grains and harder things like that, um, walnuts,
- 43:54Speaker 1: and whereas if it's like smoother uh kind of piles
- 43:59Speaker 1: than they've been feeding on, like fruits or grass things
- 44:04Speaker 1: things that are softer for their diet. So I've I've
- 44:07Speaker 1: heard a lot of that before, but I believe the
- 44:11Speaker 1: real answer is that, no, you can't tell a buck
- 44:14Speaker 1: from adough, but you can tell what they've been eating. Interesting,
- 44:17Speaker 1: that makes sense. I've never paid much attention to it,
- 44:20Speaker 1: but it's if that's true. If if you could wrap
- 44:24Speaker 1: your head around that, that would be an interesting thing
- 44:27Speaker 1: to look at because you could determine what the deer
- 44:30Speaker 1: focused on right now is the food source then to
- 44:32Speaker 1: a degree, so you could see based off droppings if
- 44:35Speaker 1: you should be focusing on something like soft mass like
- 44:37Speaker 1: apple trees or something like grains um. That would be
- 44:42Speaker 1: an interesting thing to to consider. Yeah, I try to
- 44:47Speaker 1: try to take that into account because so much of
- 44:49Speaker 1: what I hunt is agriculture, soybeans, corn field and stuff
- 44:53Speaker 1: like that, So it's not like uncommon for me to
- 44:56Speaker 1: find the stuff that's in piles. But that gets me thin,
- 45:00Speaker 1: getting like, Okay, where was this deer at because he's
- 45:03Speaker 1: obviously not spending all of his feed time like on
- 45:06Speaker 1: a field edge. So uh, and I'm not I shouldn't
- 45:10Speaker 1: say this is absolutely the answer, but I believe that
- 45:14Speaker 1: that's what it is. Never never tell you a story,
- 45:18Speaker 1: Dan about my uncle's dad and the dear turd story.
- 45:24Speaker 1: I have not I'd love to hear it. That so
- 45:27Speaker 1: so he this, so this, this is how the story goes.
- 45:30Speaker 1: At least. Um, this guy, we'll call him Bob, was
- 45:34Speaker 1: taking a friend of his out deer hunting for the
- 45:36Speaker 1: first time. And um, as Bob walked along, he'd point
- 45:41Speaker 1: at deer poop and he'd say, well, that's that's old
- 45:44Speaker 1: deer poop, and the guy would look at it and
- 45:45Speaker 1: say okay, and they keep walking. He point to another
- 45:48Speaker 1: set of palaces. Oh, there's something that's a little bit fresher,
- 45:51Speaker 1: And then they kept walking on and they kept going
- 45:54Speaker 1: and going and going, and finally, all along Bob had
- 45:59Speaker 1: been carrying some like chocolate covered raisins in his pocket,
- 46:03Speaker 1: and so he'd been pointing at real turds all this
- 46:05Speaker 1: whole time, and his friend was getting more and more
- 46:07Speaker 1: curious about it, and finally he dropped him right in
- 46:10Speaker 1: the ground in front of him when his friend wasn't looking,
- 46:12Speaker 1: and he reaches down he grabs him. He says, no,
- 46:14Speaker 1: these these are fresh dear turds, really really fresh dear turds.
- 46:18Speaker 1: And the buddy looks at him. He's like, man, how
- 46:20Speaker 1: do you know this? How do you know these are fresh?
- 46:22Speaker 1: And he's like, well, the way you can tell for sure,
- 46:24Speaker 1: you taste him. He pops one in his mouth. He's like, yeah,
- 46:28Speaker 1: oh yeah, this is this was just a couple of
- 46:29Speaker 1: hours ago. The buddies looking at him like, dude, you
- 46:32Speaker 1: are nuts. I always like that. I was like, man,
- 46:36Speaker 1: that's a good way to fool buddy. Oh that's not okay.
- 46:42Speaker 1: How about this one? Did you guys know and this?
- 46:46Speaker 1: I did not know this. I I'll just say wild
- 46:49Speaker 1: turkeys their head gobbler's heads actually changed colors with their
- 46:56Speaker 1: level of excitement or emotion. So I always just assumed that,
- 47:01Speaker 1: like a blue headed turkey was just always a blue
- 47:03Speaker 1: head turkey, and a red headed goblers. The red headed
- 47:05Speaker 1: gobbler and summer white summer, red summer blue summer pinkish,
- 47:08Speaker 1: and I just thought that was like east individual turkey
- 47:11Speaker 1: or sometimes older turkeys had a certain coloring. Is that
- 47:15Speaker 1: just me being ignorant? Or do you guys not realize
- 47:17Speaker 1: that that's the same bird can be all the different
- 47:18Speaker 1: colors based on his excitement. I did know that, yeah,
- 47:24Speaker 1: and I've seen it happen. And like the coloration is
- 47:27Speaker 1: a bit of wisdom that you want to use if
- 47:29Speaker 1: you're trying to reap turkeys. They say that, uh, if
- 47:33Speaker 1: you're trying to find the ideal reaping situation, and reaping
- 47:38Speaker 1: is if you don't know where, you basically hide behind
- 47:41Speaker 1: a fan and use that to you know, cut the
- 47:44Speaker 1: distance between you and the gobbler and bring the gobbler
- 47:47Speaker 1: to you anyway, They stay the ideal reaping tom is
- 47:51Speaker 1: one with a white head, because that's like maximum aggression,
- 47:55Speaker 1: one with maximum attitude. Who's most likely to appro to
- 48:00Speaker 1: you hiding behind a tail fan. That's so cool. I
- 48:03Speaker 1: don't know how I missed that in my in my
- 48:05Speaker 1: years of turkey hunting, but that for some reason makes
- 48:07Speaker 1: turkeys even cooler to me, that they've got like chameleon
- 48:10Speaker 1: heads or like mood ring heads. Maybe it is a
- 48:13Speaker 1: better way to say it. Have you ever I tell
- 48:16Speaker 1: you what? I tell you what I I was sitting
- 48:19Speaker 1: on a ridge one day I fell asleep, um one
- 48:22Speaker 1: of those scenarios. I called for a little bit. It
- 48:24Speaker 1: was mid day, fell asleep. I woke up and down
- 48:29Speaker 1: this little creek system, I see out of field a
- 48:34Speaker 1: tom with a decent beard, and he had a red head.
- 48:39Speaker 1: He was, you know, not fired up at all, and
- 48:42Speaker 1: he was, you know, eating down eating, And then I
- 48:45Speaker 1: started calling and he perked up, and you know, he
- 48:50Speaker 1: went from that skinny little body to he started puffing up,
- 48:53Speaker 1: and his head went from kind of this red to
- 48:58Speaker 1: a blue and then he started coming in and then
- 49:00Speaker 1: he started getting in full strut. And then I watched
- 49:02Speaker 1: it change from blue to this pure white color, and
- 49:07Speaker 1: it was it was one of the coolest things I
- 49:10Speaker 1: had ever seen. And just the light hitting it and
- 49:14Speaker 1: watching his head change colors was I know. That's that's
- 49:19Speaker 1: where I learned learned from. I don't know how I've
- 49:22Speaker 1: never seen it or never noticed. I'm sure it's happened,
- 49:24Speaker 1: but I guess I've never been paying attention enough to
- 49:26Speaker 1: the head. Now what happens? So when you shoot the bird.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Is it stuck at whatever color it was, or does
- 49:34Speaker 1: it revert to something else. I've never paid attention to that.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Either you'll see a change, like I've I've shot ones
- 49:41Speaker 1: with red heads and then you know, I'll brest him out,
- 49:44Speaker 1: but not take pictures for you know, until hours later,
- 49:47Speaker 1: and by that point they'll they'll have a blue head.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Quite often I've seen him, you know, like keep the
- 49:52Speaker 1: red head or maybe it's a different shade of red.
- 49:55Speaker 1: But I think after they're dead, you'll see a change
- 49:59Speaker 1: there that makes sense. Have you have you raped a
- 50:02Speaker 1: turkey in before, Spencer? I have not. Um I I
- 50:08Speaker 1: would love to try it because like that is my
- 50:11Speaker 1: style of being aggressive. I don't care if I mess
- 50:14Speaker 1: up on a turkey, like like Dan said earlier, who
- 50:16Speaker 1: cares just a turkey? But uh, that's something I'll definitely consider.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And we have like the wide open topography here that
- 50:25Speaker 1: would uh you know, work well for that, so it'll happen. Yeah,
- 50:32Speaker 1: that would be. I've never tried it, and I know
- 50:34Speaker 1: it's not legal in all places, I don't think so
- 50:37Speaker 1: if you're listening, you have to make sure to check
- 50:38Speaker 1: up on your regulations around that. But it looks like
- 50:42Speaker 1: a super cool way to just to literally crawl across
- 50:44Speaker 1: the field towards the gobble or towards the gobbler, holding
- 50:48Speaker 1: that fan up in front of you, trying to cut
- 50:50Speaker 1: the distance. And I've heard like they can. Then they
- 50:51Speaker 1: get super aggressive too, so lots of times they just
- 50:54Speaker 1: come charging in at it. And then the last second
- 50:56Speaker 1: you've got to drop that fan and pull up with
- 50:58Speaker 1: your gun or whatever, try to get a show out
- 51:00Speaker 1: when he's five yards away from you or whatever coming
- 51:02Speaker 1: at you. I mean, talk about high intensity turkey hunting
- 51:07Speaker 1: that I'd love to try that. Yeah, that'd be cool. Okay,
- 51:10Speaker 1: what would you guys call a group of turkeys? What
- 51:14Speaker 1: would be the proper term for a group of turkeys? Dan,
- 51:18Speaker 1: what do you think? I'm just gonna go with what
- 51:22Speaker 1: every other game bird, a flock spencer? Uh, I would
- 51:30Speaker 1: go with the same thing. So I do think that
- 51:34Speaker 1: is one of the terms that can be used as
- 51:35Speaker 1: a whole slow. I found a whole bunch of different ones,
- 51:38Speaker 1: but two that I saw that I had not heard before.
- 51:42Speaker 1: You can call, supposedly one of the official terms for
- 51:45Speaker 1: a group of turkeys is a gang or a rafter,
- 51:48Speaker 1: a rafter of turkeys. I also called them. At once.
- 51:53Speaker 1: I was turkey hunting with my wife and a whole
- 51:55Speaker 1: bunch of jake's came in and like, in the heat
- 51:58Speaker 1: of the moment, I don't know, I've never even was
- 52:00Speaker 1: this word in my entire life ever before, but this
- 52:02Speaker 1: group of three jakes came like barreling in towards us.
- 52:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh man, there's a whole passle of them
- 52:07Speaker 1: coming in. And so now I always refer to a
- 52:10Speaker 1: group of turkeys as a passle of turkeys. So write
- 52:13Speaker 1: that one down. I'll pass. How fast How fast do
- 52:17Speaker 1: you think a turkey can move on foot? What's the high?
- 52:21Speaker 1: Twenty two point five miles per hour? Is that right?
- 52:24Speaker 1: It was like the same speed as Usain Bolt I
- 52:27Speaker 1: saw twenty four But that's essentially the same thing. That's crazy,
- 52:32Speaker 1: isn't it. Yeah? I wanted to say that, like during
- 52:36Speaker 1: Usain Bolts hunter meter dash record time, and I don't
- 52:40Speaker 1: remember what year twelve might have banned or whatever, that
- 52:43Speaker 1: like his top speed is the same as like a
- 52:45Speaker 1: turkey's top speed. That's that's a great, great line for
- 52:49Speaker 1: an announcer during the Olympics or something. No, no, what
- 52:54Speaker 1: about to flight my guests would be forty fifty five
- 53:02Speaker 1: miles per hour flight? Is that is the top? That's
- 53:06Speaker 1: crazy because I read somewhere that the way a Turkey
- 53:12Speaker 1: is built and how physics works, like they shouldn't even
- 53:17Speaker 1: be able to take off with their body weight. Yeah,
- 53:20Speaker 1: it doesn't look like it. They have like one of
- 53:23Speaker 1: the lowest wing load scores. I think it's called wing load.
- 53:27Speaker 1: It's it's like the ratio of uh, you know, your
- 53:30Speaker 1: wings to your body weight, and uh, there's is so
- 53:35Speaker 1: far off the chart that it's, like you said, hard
- 53:39Speaker 1: to fathom that that they can take flight. They are
- 53:44Speaker 1: the most un great, un graceful looking animal ever when
- 53:51Speaker 1: they take flight, I'd say, I mean, they can be
- 53:53Speaker 1: so cool looking when they're strutting around, and then when
- 53:56Speaker 1: they try to take off and fly somewhere, sometimes they
- 53:58Speaker 1: get going, it's it's it's not quite as impressive um
- 54:03Speaker 1: or or they fly out of the tree. It's like,
- 54:07Speaker 1: especially during deer season, when you'll hear him fly up
- 54:11Speaker 1: at night, or you'll hear him fly down, it's like
- 54:13Speaker 1: someone's just throwing cannonballs out of a tree. Yeah. Yeah,
- 54:17Speaker 1: do you guys ever try to simulate that noise? One
- 54:19Speaker 1: of the things I used to try when I was
- 54:21Speaker 1: kind of calling the turkeys on the roost is I
- 54:23Speaker 1: would try to simulate the sound of the fly down
- 54:26Speaker 1: of hens. So I'd like take my hat or something
- 54:29Speaker 1: and I hit it against my my thigh or something
- 54:31Speaker 1: to make like that noise as like they're flying down. Um.
- 54:37Speaker 1: I don't know if it's ever really helped my calling
- 54:39Speaker 1: sequence in the morning. But have you guys ever tried
- 54:41Speaker 1: that at all? Uh? I have tried it. I like
- 54:47Speaker 1: the added realism, but as far as like that being
- 54:51Speaker 1: the difference between you getting a gobbler and you're set
- 54:54Speaker 1: up and I can't right, I don't know, but I
- 54:57Speaker 1: don't think it hurts either. They're not gonna hear them
- 54:59Speaker 1: be like that that, what's that asshole doing? What's okay?
- 55:05Speaker 1: So so on that note, I want to jump to
- 55:08Speaker 1: some listener questions because I want to get some of
- 55:10Speaker 1: these answered and then maybe hot back to a couple
- 55:12Speaker 1: of stories. But Jacob on Twitter asked us this. He said,
- 55:19Speaker 1: how on the living hell do you kill one of
- 55:21Speaker 1: these damn things? Because I have no freaking clue. So
- 55:27Speaker 1: let's give us a lot to talk about. But if
- 55:30Speaker 1: you have one like your one best turkey hunting tip
- 55:33Speaker 1: for someone who has no freaking clue, Spencer, what would
- 55:37Speaker 1: it be, uh, find the dumb ones? And you know,
- 55:42Speaker 1: that can be a number of factors, like time of
- 55:44Speaker 1: year right now, like I said, the turkeys are breaking off,
- 55:48Speaker 1: and so they're getting a lot more aggressive and you know,
- 55:53Speaker 1: not making the best decisions all the time, and so
- 55:55Speaker 1: that makes them dumber. Trying to find birds that are
- 55:59Speaker 1: on pressure, maybe flocks that are living in Mrs Jenkins
- 56:05Speaker 1: backyard that are eating out of a bird feeder but
- 56:08Speaker 1: roosting in a past year, you know, a quarter mile away,
- 56:10Speaker 1: those ones that have never been bothered, and so those
- 56:14Speaker 1: would be obviously the dumber ones. And and then as
- 56:18Speaker 1: far as like species too, I think the guys who
- 56:22Speaker 1: are uh you know, the slam holders and the people
- 56:25Speaker 1: who hunt all over the country say that Easterns are
- 56:28Speaker 1: the most difficult to get into range and the hardest
- 56:33Speaker 1: to to you know, match their vocalizations. Who are like
- 56:36Speaker 1: a Merriam's is the easiest to you know, talk to
- 56:42Speaker 1: and fool and so another you know, not as far
- 56:46Speaker 1: as finding a dumb one, Miriam's would likely give you
- 56:50Speaker 1: better odds than an Eastern I've I've heard that too.
- 56:54Speaker 1: How much how much of that is just pressure related?
- 56:57Speaker 1: You know, the Eastern turkeys are getting hunted by so
- 56:59Speaker 1: many more guys. Do they it's that? Or do you
- 57:00Speaker 1: think there's actually some kind of genetic difference? Have you heard?
- 57:03Speaker 1: I know, I know there's a genetic difference, but I
- 57:05Speaker 1: mean a genetic difference and why they're more susceptible to hunting.
- 57:09Speaker 1: I would say that's definitely part of it. Like you
- 57:11Speaker 1: think about what stereotypical Miriam's habitat is, like, like you
- 57:16Speaker 1: could spot these things, you know, from a mile away,
- 57:19Speaker 1: whereas an Eastern is probably in really dense timber and
- 57:23Speaker 1: so it's just more difficult to I don't know, identify
- 57:27Speaker 1: where that birds at and get them into range, uh
- 57:30Speaker 1: than it would be the type of terrain that a
- 57:33Speaker 1: Miriam's lives in. You know, Dan, what about you? You're
- 57:37Speaker 1: one best tip for the guy that has no freaking
- 57:39Speaker 1: clue Just I don't know. Um, this is a This
- 57:46Speaker 1: is the reason I'm successful at turkey hunting, or I
- 57:51Speaker 1: was this year, is because I knew where they've been
- 57:53Speaker 1: roosting historically. So if you get the opportunity, go out
- 57:59Speaker 1: and do some more pre morning scouting. If I can
- 58:04Speaker 1: even say that, my system is starting to shut down
- 58:06Speaker 1: because I'm overly tired because we're recording so late. But
- 58:09Speaker 1: what I'm trying to say is go out before your
- 58:12Speaker 1: season starts early in the morning, walk around, call a
- 58:15Speaker 1: little bit, locate them, and then just leave. And then
- 58:20Speaker 1: when it's time to do hunting season, you know it's
- 58:23Speaker 1: you got a couple of options right off the bat
- 58:27Speaker 1: that you can start off with, and those are going
- 58:29Speaker 1: to be your your best options. Yeah, that's kind of
- 58:33Speaker 1: what I would say to I mean, I taught myself
- 58:35Speaker 1: to turkey hunt with like no I had no idea.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I didn't hadn't gone out with anyone who knew what
- 58:40Speaker 1: they're doing. Um it just read some magazine articles and
- 58:45Speaker 1: watched like a YouTube video or something about how to
- 58:47Speaker 1: call and stuff. I just kind of figured it out.
- 58:48Speaker 1: And I think the most important stuff is Number one,
- 58:51Speaker 1: just find some gobblers, so do what you just said.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Find where they're roosted, so just walk around and listen
- 58:57Speaker 1: to them at night when they're up in their roost.
- 58:59Speaker 1: Find some birds, and then just learn how to do
- 59:02Speaker 1: a basic yelp. Just figure out that that one basic
- 59:06Speaker 1: hen sound and that's enough to call on a gobbler.
- 59:10Speaker 1: I mean, I knew how to do nothing but the
- 59:12Speaker 1: very most basic yelp um, and I was able to
- 59:16Speaker 1: call birds in my very first year. Now I didn't
- 59:18Speaker 1: kill him, um, but I had some good action, had
- 59:20Speaker 1: some close calls and stuff like that. So that's number
- 59:24Speaker 1: one right there. If you can do that, I think
- 59:26Speaker 1: you can at least like get into the action on
- 59:28Speaker 1: some birds and then you can figure out the nuance
- 59:31Speaker 1: and figure out all the other things that might help
- 59:32Speaker 1: you close the deal more often. But that can at
- 59:35Speaker 1: least get you going. Um, there's plenty more. I mean,
- 59:40Speaker 1: if you're trying to bow hunt, that can be more challenging,
- 59:43Speaker 1: or if you're trying to hold out for a certain big,
- 59:46Speaker 1: big mature tom, or if you're trying to kill him
- 59:48Speaker 1: in a bunch of different states, Sure things can get
- 59:49Speaker 1: more difficult. But to just get some stuff happening, you
- 59:53Speaker 1: don't need to be some kind of savant hunter to
- 59:56Speaker 1: have some basic turkey any action. Um, what you're saying,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I would go back to, like dance point. I asked,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: like one of the best fishermen that I know, I
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: asked him one time, like, what is the single best
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: piece of advice you've ever gotten or given? And he said,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: don't fish memories. And so you know, meaning that if
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: you nail the walleye here like two years ago, that
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: doesn't mean that they're gonna be right on that hump again.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: And that's something that I think applies to turkeys. Like
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: as far as the roost, and this is something that
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I like fail at every year and I have to
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: relearn every year. I see turkeys roost in a tree
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: and it's like in my head that, Okay, well they're
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: going to roost there again, but that's not always the case.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Turkeys are not married to a roost, and more often
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: it's like that they're going to roost somewhere in that
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: creek bottom again within like you know football field stretch. Uh,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: but they're not necessarily going to be like in that
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: tree and they're not going to pitch down out of
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that tree into this in little opening. And so just
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: like learning to be mobile or flexible in that first
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: you know, half hour of daylight is a big part
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: of it, because I have uh messed that up a
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: lot of times where I'm overconfident that like yep, they're
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: gonna fly out of that branch and they're gonna land
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: on you know, that piece of dirt, and I'm gonna
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: kill them there. That that's not that simple, and you
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: could go you could go into like all these really
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: hardcore details like we do with white tails, where Okay,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: you're gonna find where they're roost. Then you're gonna find
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: where they have what they call a strut zone, right,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: So it's basically a location that these turkeys hang out
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: at part of the day and they just sit there
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and strap back and forth while the hens are feeding.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: So it's you can get into a lot of detail.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: But I think the less you know about turkey strategy,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: the or successful you'll be because I how I learned
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: a turkey hunt was was with my uncle's and it
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: was literally a you walk into the woods at dark
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: in the morning, you call, you locate them in a tree,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: You sit down with your decoys out in front of you.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: You call, you call, do they come in, Nope, get up, move,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: put the decoys out, call call call, nope, move and
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: then you finally you'll run into something and then you
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: shoot it in the face. So it's pretty easy. I
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: don't know if it always goes quite that easily. But
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I like, I like the freestyle nature of your approach.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: What about go back to the roost? Uh, situation that
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: you're mentioning their Spencer. We got a question a number
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: of questions related to when birds are on the roost.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: So one person asked, when the birds when the gowlers
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: are on the roost, is it better to remain silent
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: and wait till they reach the ground or should you
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: lightly call why while they're in the tree. And then
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: another person said, when birds on the roost, how much
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: calling is too much? It's kind of getting at the
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: same thing there. Um, what would you say to those things, Spencer? Uh,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I would let the real life turkeys be the guide.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: And so if you hear the hands talking a lot,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I think that's an invitation for you to do some
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: talking and give up your location. Um. And if you
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: you know, let out a yelp and you have a
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: gabbler that cuts you off, I think that's an invite
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: to talk a little more too. But uh, that turkey
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: is like not going to forget where you're at if
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you call and they don't respond, Um, you know, obviously
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: it's it's easier to say don't overcall than it is
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: to actually put your call away and not do it,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: because you know, obviously that's that's what I think. The
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: answer is, don't overcall, But then to actually not overcall
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: is is really difficult to do. So I think the
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: best thing you can do is let the real turkeys
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: dictate what you're doing. Man. The first year I went
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: out turkey hunting on my own, I remember pulling up
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: close to where I thought one was roosted, and then
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: one sounded off, just like I was hoping he would.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: And for like however long it was fifteen minutes or whatever,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: while he was up in that tree still and I
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: was down the ground. Every time he gobbled, I was yelping.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: He gobbled, I was yelping, he was gobbling. I was
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the helping, and that just kept. If he didn't talk
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: for like thirty seconds, I started helping again, thirty seconds,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I was the helping again for like fifteen minutes. If
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: anyone was around there, they would have heard the biggest
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: idiot just calling and calling and calling. Um. I think
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: you're right, though, I think overcalling all the time you do.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: I talked about I talked back and forth with him
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: all the time. I'm I leaded the conversation. I'm in
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: charge of it. See I've I've found that that was
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: my biggest mistake, was calling too much. Like I would
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: overcall at least here A lot of times these birds
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: would almost not this is probably giving them too much credit,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: but they'd almost be like, no real hand would be
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: talking this much like that, that's something seems fishy. So
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: I was having these birds that would gobble for a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: bit and then they would like fall by the wayside.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: And then as soon as I started playing hard to
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: get with them, so I would just get it to
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: where I knew they heard me, they were interested, and
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: then lots of times I'd stop and I'd wait a
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: long time, and then that's when I when I started,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you know, holding up, especially on the roots, like for
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: me on the roost, I would just do a little
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: light yelping just to get him excited and make sure
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: they know our map, and then it usually would just
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: stop until they fly down um and then maybe I
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: hear one and go off. Once there on the ground,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: then I'll yelp a few more times and a couple
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: more times that they're coming in closer and closer, but
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: especially if they hung up or anything like that where
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: they don't seem to be coming in anymore, but I
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: still hear them. That shutting down and being quiet so
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: often for me has been what has gotten them to
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: come all the way in. They're like, Okay, I know
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: there's a hand over there. Why isn't she talking anymore?
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: I gotta go get her. Um, that for me was
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: like the light switched moment when I started killing birds,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: when I started getting really picky about how often I called.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: So that's interesting to hear that you're the opposite. Yeah,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: I The way I look at it is if they're
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: roosted with a hen, and that hen they can see,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and she doesn't even have to call, right she flies down,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: they're gonna follow her, regardless of the hen that's going
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: bananas across the valley right and on the opposite side,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: if there is no hen in the tree with him,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: they're gonna And then let's say there's multiple birds they're going,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: it's now a competition to see who can get there
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: the fastest. That's the way I look at it. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: I know I can. I can see the logic to
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: that too. Um, Now, what about this scenario. This is
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: another question we got. So what if the gobbler, What
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: if the birds aren't talking at all? When you've got
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: a quiet morning, nothing's gobbling off the roost, nothing's gobbling
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: during daylight when they should be on their feet and
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: walking around. What do you do Dan in that situation
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: when the turkeys are quiet. That's a great question. And
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: the answer to that is, I go to a local
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: diner and I eat something called a river wreck, which
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: is scrambled eggs, biscuits, and gravy, hash browns and bacon
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: all on one massive pile, and I wash it down
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: with mountain dew, and then I go and take a nap.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: That's one way to approach it. I don't like, dude,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I don't like to hunt. If they're not calling back
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: and forth. Right, I may go out, drive around the section,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: see where they're strutting, try to sneak up on them
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: and and go from there. But if they're on a
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: different property, there's not much I can do. Yeah, Spencer,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: about you, Well, if that's the case that, like you
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: are confident the birds should be talking, and the weather's
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: right and the seasons right, and the turkeys are there,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: then it's probably something thing you did wrong, Like you
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: walked in with your you were skylined, and you know
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: every turkey in that creek bottom saw you come in there.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Or uh, you were putting up your ground blind and
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you were popping out the hubs and goes whishh. You
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: know you do that five times right next to the roost, Well,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: that will probably shut them down. And so if you
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: think that like all the conditions are right for turkeys
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: to be talking and they're not talking, then I would be,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: you know, trying to figure out what I just did
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: to shut them up? Man. But you know there's there's
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: some days though, when they just aren't talking, Like even
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: if you didn't do anything wrong, even if you're a
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: long ways away from there where they're roosted, but you
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: would be able to hear them. And I don't know
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: what conditions shut them down. I'm not that much for
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: turkey hunter to know. But I did just read an
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: article before the podcast where they're talking about some research
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: done but I think Mississippi State, UM where they were
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: correlating certain conditions to gobbling activity. UM. So they did
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: see like there was a certain Now I believe I
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: saw like between sixty and sixty nine degrees temperature wise
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: was like the optimal temperature for gobbling activity for like
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: pete gobbling. And then like if you got I think
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: I think that I've read that if it got hotter
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: than that, it went downhill. And then there was other
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: possible connections to like bara metric pressure, um and something else.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: So there are certain things and a wind to a
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: certain amount of wind can shut down gobbling. UM. So
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: in those situations when I think, even if you're like
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: you're doing the right things, there's just gonna be some
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: days when the turkeys are just quiet no matter what. UM.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: And on those kinds of days, for me, what I've done,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: like you said, Dan, I'll get up and move around
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: and just try to spot and stock them kind of
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: just you know, because they're still gonna go and go
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: about their day their daily routine still, so they're gonna
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: still fly down somewhere. They're still gonna strut around for
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: some you know, at some point, um, for an hour
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: hour and a half or two hours for the first
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: thing in the morning, walk around some hens and stuff.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: But then usually again so at that point, if you
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: can walk around and class them up, then you can
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: move in on them and maybe get them to come
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: and do a call or something. Or the other thing
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: that happens a lot of times is even if it's
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: been quiet all morning, right around that like nine thirty,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: Between nine and thirty, it seems like for me um
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: is when lots of times the hens break off from
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: the tom's. Maybe they go and they nest or whatever,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: and then the tom's are back on the move. They're
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: back on the hunt. For another hand, it seems like
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of people talk about this time
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: frame two whether it's kind of like their cruise and
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: again kind of like a running buck. And so it
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: always seems to be like there's like a couple hour
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: lull in the late morning and then like ten o'clock
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you hear that gobble all of a sudden out of nowhere.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: You haven't heard anything for three and a half four hours,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: and the boom, there's that lone turkey on the hunt.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: And uh, lots of times that can be then the
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: start of a good period of the day too. But
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: maybe even if they aren't gobbling, you'll catch that cruiser
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: at that point. So I like trying to move around
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: sitting spots, you can watch and just try. I mean,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: my one of my favorite hunts ever was with my
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: dad a few years back, and this is the situation
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: when the birds hadn't been talking at all, but we
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: just set up in the spot we could see down
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: a power line a long ways in either direction. We
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: set out a decoy and we just waited and just
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: sit sitting glass and talk, you know, caught up on
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: life and all that kind of good stuff. And finally
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: we just got lucky that Tom crossed that power line
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: like two yards down the way. There hadn't been any
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: talking all day, all afternoon, but we just saw him
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: from long ways off and just because we are determined
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: to sit out there and be there, we saw him
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: and then we were able to call and call him
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: right and he never I don't think he ever gobbled.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: He just came in and um, I mean, there's something
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: to be said about It's kind of like during the rut.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: If he has put in the time, even if you're
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: not seeing lots of action, good stuff can happen. But
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: you know, it depends on what you want of it.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Like you said, Dan, if you want the gobbling, hot
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: action and that's all you want, then going to get
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the river record might be the better option on the
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: slow days. I'm a big fan of hot action. I
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: I believe you you are. Um, Okay, how about this one?
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: What what is your favorite way to serve wild turkey? Spencer?
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: What about that one? Mm hmm, go to Dan? Let
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: me think about that, Dan, what's her go to wild
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: turkey recipe? I got to go to number one? Potatoes, carrots, cream,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: and mushroom soup, some chopped up onions, all in the
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: big crock pot, and then you just cook it and
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: cook it and cook it. But first I gotta hammer
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: it right. You gotta tender eye the meat, because like
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the breast is really uh like wild turkey meat is
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: a little bit tougher than your or about turkey meat.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: So I tend to rize it right. I put to
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: put it in between two towels, and I take a
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: cookie roller or a dough roller and beat it. And
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: then that that typically does a trick. Or my wife's
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: favorite is turkey nuggets. You cut them up into about
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: an inch by inch and then you bred them, fry them,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: serve them with some hot you know, uh, do the
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: hot sauce, dance on them or barbecue or whatever and
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: then serving with blue cheese or ranch. Nice. Yeah. I
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: like to do like a like a fried turkey nugget too,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: with deep fry them, kind of like fried chicken type thing. Um.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: But I don't know, I don't know where I found
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: this recipe, but it's kind of like hot chicken like.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: It's kind of a spicy fried chicken breading. Man. That
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: is good. I mean, that is really good. I'm actually
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: talking about having my nephew over this weekend before we hunt,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: and we're gonna make some of those up. So that's
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: my favorite one. Um. And then white turkey chili is
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: also a good a good one. You can even use
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: the legs for that slow cook up, tear it up,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: put it in chili um or pulled turkey tacos. That's
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: another good way to use that leg meat. Um, that's
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: kind of tougher stringer. But if you like slow slow
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: cooking in the crock pot until it starts to break
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: down and then just use forks to tear it all up,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: that makes some really good turkey filling um or taco
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: type meat. Um. Spencer, did you figure out yours yet? Yeah?
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: So thinking about it a little more probably my favorite
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: is like a turkey Philly and so slicing up or
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: breast super thin and then you know, tossing that in
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: a pan or on a grill fairly quickly you don't
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: want to overcook it. And then with like some green peppers, mushrooms,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: onions on a HOGI and I love that, And if
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the season is right, you can like find some morals
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: to serve with it, or pick some asparagus and just
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: get like a real springtime delicacy. And so that's probably
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: my favorite turkey rest to pee. But then I'm a
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: wild game enthusiast, and so this is one thing that
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: I think is important for people to consider as well
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: as like brianing, do you guys do any Brian's for
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: like your wild turkey or your Thanksgiving turkey? That it's
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: a great point, I Brian. Anytime I'm making wild turkey,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I Brian at first. So what what is your Brian
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: that you do? Real simple sugar, salt and lemon, usually
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: water and water. Okay, all right, well now I got you.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: So there's been some food science done on like this
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: has gotcha journalism? Is that what you're doing to me?
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: I got you? So I will send you the article
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: and we're done. But there's been some food science done
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: about like the weight retention and the liquid retention in
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: turkey breasts um based on different Brians. And so the
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: thought with like a wet Brian is that the soul
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: like opens up the pores and then the water comes
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: rushing in there and stuff. And so while if you
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Brian a turkey breast like that, it will be juicier
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: than a turkey breast that you did not Brian. But
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: what you're getting is not like natural turkey flavor. You're
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: you're putting water in your turkey breast. And so what's
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: actually better is just a dry brine like salt. And
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: I can't remember what the like the science is going
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: on there. I think it's something that like when you're
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: cooking the breast then and you have a dry brine
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: on there, the juice comes to the outside and it
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: hits that salt layer and it turns around and it
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: stays in the turkey breast. And so like a dry
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: a dry brian um helps you retain white better and
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: it's giving you like a better flavor because you're not
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: just shoving water in your meat. Interesting, very interesting Spencer,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: nice little factoid there. I'm probably still gonna shove water
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: in my turkey breasts, but but I'm interested that to
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: look more into that idea, you have to send me
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: the article if you can find it. All right, Um,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: speaking of you, Spencer, I don't know why I thought
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: of this while you were talking about that. I guess
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: I was thinking about you shooting these turkeys and putting
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: them in dry brins. Um. But being a bow hunter
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: for turkeys, can you talk a little about arrow placement?
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Because I think a lot of people maybe that are
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: considering bow hunting for turkeys but haven't yet, might get
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: this mixed up because you see this great, big round
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: ball of turkey and you might think of a certain
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: spot would be the place to shoot it, but it
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: is wrong. Can you talk about the right place to
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: aim on turkey with the bow? Um? I guess it's
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: it's hard to like explain it, but I think the
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: most important thing to consider is that, like people want
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: to talk about turkey broadheads like they do dear oddeads,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: but the most important thing is just being accurate, because
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: what you're shooting at is about the size of a softball,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: you know, Although it looks like more you know of
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: a basketball that's that's not the case. There are a
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: lot of guys and I've done it multiple times in
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: my bow hunting Turkey career where a shot is just
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: gonna end with a big puff of feathers because there
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: is like not much actual meat there in a strutted
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: up tom. And I think the best shot that you
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: can take is like when a tom has turned away
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: from you and you can you know, go for like
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: that Texas heart shot. Obviously that's ideal because you can draw,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: you have like a good indicator of where to aim. Um.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: But uh, it's just you know, important to be accurate
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: and know where you're shooting and know that there's not
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: you know, much of a forgiving area there. Yeah, So
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: for those who don't know what the Texas heart shot is,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: that would be shooting it in the vent for the
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: the anus um straight from behind would be the Texas
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: heart shot um or like you said, it's it's a
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: really small vital so you really got to know where
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: this is out of Turkey. But you can follow follow
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: the legs up and then shoot it like the top
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: third of the body right above the legs and a
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: touch ahead would be about where those vitals would be. Um.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: And then you can also try the head shot. You know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: some people have you know, used the specific broadheads to decapitate. Um,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: I've never done that. Have you ever tried that spencer? No?
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: I have not. Yeah, it seems I guess you either
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: get it done or you missed completely. But that seems
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: to be how my bow hunting for turkeys has been anyways,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I just usually missed the bird completely. Um. When I
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: first started trying to teach myself turkey and I thought
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: I should start with a bow, and my first two
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: ever shot opportunities I missed right between the legs underneath them. Um,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: So I switched to a gun and started killing a
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: bunch of birds. So I think I'm probably gonna switch
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: back one of these years. But UM, it didn't start
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: off too well. What either one of you guys are
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: gonna turkey mounted or have you? It would have to
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: be really unique and big, because obviously turkeys don't have
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: characteristics like dear do, so it would have to be
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: like multiple beards or unique feather configuration or of I
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: don't know, three ft beard or something like that. I
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: don't know. Huge spurs three eyes. I don't know. I
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: was very close to mounting one last year. UM. I
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: shot our state record our three real grand turkey had
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: triple beard UM, and he's number fifteen in the world
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: with a bow, and so I just about mounted him.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: But then I started like looking at the prices and
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, he's cool, but he's not cool,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: So I didn't like I didn't do a full strutted
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: out mount, but I got the fan and his wings
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: and then the you know, I kept the spurs and
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: the three beards, and those are all on a plaque
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: together is his fan, the two wings, spurs, and the beard.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: But uh, you know, I always have that option since
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: I have the important parts. I talked to some text
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: him as if I were ever to get another rio,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: that I could, you know, have a full body of
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: mount done. But like, where does that go in a home?
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I don't know that that doesn't look good anywhere. I
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: don't think I've reached out to some music. I've reached
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: out to some museums like the Smithsonian and uh some
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: other places, I think the Natural History Museum to see
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: if they had wanted UM. But there's just like a
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: whole bunch of um paperwork to go along with that,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: and so at this point hasn't happened. I've reached out
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: to Cabela's about taking it um, but with their best
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: pro merger, they have stopped UM buying mount and stuff
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: like that. So at this point it's just you know,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: the fan, the wing mounts. But I'd love for him
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: to be on a full display somewhere, whether it's you know,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: in my basement or in a museum in Washington, d C.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Where is your How much did that cost for I
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: can I cost you for a full mount? I can't
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: even remember now. I want to say it was like
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: seven hundred bucks or somewhere around there. It's gotta be
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: like a ton of detail for a full stutting tom. Yeah,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: that's crazy. Yeah, I don't think I would ever do it.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: I my first bird I ever killed. I did, like
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: just like the tail, fan mountain, the beard, and that
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: was super cool. I like having that up and getting
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: to see that, you know, that first one. Now, for
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: whatever reason, I keep the beards and I keep the legs,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: you know, with the spurs attached, and I just have
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: like a table and my barn just stacked with beards
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: and legs, and if anyone who didn't like understand what
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: these things were, they'd be really creeped out by this
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: weird pile in my bar. But uh, but I've I've
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: seen some people like cut the spurs off and like
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: put them on like a a cord or something. I
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: don't know, Maybe I should do something like that someday,
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: because you know, it's nice to have some kind of
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: token or memento of that hunt and that bird. But
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: I don't know, they just don't lend themselves to it
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: like a like a deer. And I've got multiple uh
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: tail feathers and beard plaques that are in my garage
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: that I don't even happen on the wall. It's like
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: they take up so much space. And my success for
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: a turkey is higher than my success for a deer.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: So I mean, if I wanted to, I'd have them
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: in every room of the house and you know, multiple
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: stacked on top of each other, and it just I
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: don't know. I think I'm to the point now where
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: I'm almost done collecting that stuff. Yeah, I mean it. Yeah,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: when some when a rarity of it is lost, it
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: does change things a little bit. Okay, last question for
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you guys, um, do do you have like a most
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: embarrassing turkey experience or story? Either one of you guys?
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: I do. I mean, my life is pretty much an embarrassment,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: but I will tell you. I'll tell you this turkey
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: hunting story. So it was one of my very first
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: ever turkey hunts. I'm twenty six, no excuse me, two
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: thousand and two, so I'm like two years old. I'm
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: in college. Um, the night before I went out and
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: I just got hammered. And so the next morning I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: woke up, drove to drove to meet my uncle's and
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: we went out into the turkey woods and started hunting.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: And the birds, the birds aren't going bananas. And all
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: of a sudden, I am getting this rumble in my stomach,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: like I gotta go number two, and I gotta go
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: right now, and so I am I put my gun down,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: and my uncle can't see me because he's kind of
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: behind me. He's calling for me. So I have to
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: like pull my pants down walking the walk, you know,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: into this taller grass behind a tree. And I got
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: my pants down and I'm holding real still and I'm
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: going to the bathroom and I'm watching these birds fly
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: out of the tree right down to our decoys and strutting.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: They're already strutting right in front of the decoys. And
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: I hear my uncle just yell shoot him, shoot him,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: And I don't even have my gun. And then he
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: he sits up out of this this old tree. He
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: was sitting and looks at me, and I had my
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: butt out and I was pooping. That that seems like
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: on par for the core story for Dan Johnson. Can
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: you top that? Spencer? Uh No, I can't think of
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: like one individual moment that bad, but maybe just like collectively,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: my first couple of years turkey hunting, I was just
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: terrible just what I was doing. Uh you know, my
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: lowest of lows as a turkey hunter were really poor,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: and nobody in my family turkey hunted. So I was,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: you know, self taught, learning in the woods. And I
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: think I probably started hunting when I was like seventeen
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: or eighteen for turkeys, and uh, you know, I couldn't
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: kill him with a shotgun. I just I was a failure.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: And so those first couple of years, looking back, when
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: I was doing as far as like setups and calling
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: and decoys and stuff like that. It was bad. I
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I that's a very similar situation. Myself took a little
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: took some growing pains. As I'm trying to think of,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: like my embarrassing story, I realized that probably the best
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: embarrassing stories I have are not my own, but stories
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: about further So. And since Further is not on here,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: I should tell some of Further's embarrassing defend himself, roast
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: and Furthers when Josh isn't here. Um, so how about
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: this one? Um kind of a serious there's a whole
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: series of turkey further stories where he does these things,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: and I'm like, really, man, like we're turkey hunting. We
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: were sneaking in to actually get set up on this
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: food plot. I might have told the story a couple
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: of years ago, right after it happened. But we're heading
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: into this blind set up and we get to the
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: food plot. We're just about to step out into the field,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: and um head towards the blind and usually the birds
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: roost a long ways away from this spot, but it's
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: usually the closest we can get to the roost, and
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: usually they're on a neighboring property. We're just about stepping
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: the field and a bird just lights up, like forty
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: yards away in a tree or just on the other
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: side of the field, like right across the way. There's
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: never birds here, but there was one this night. So
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: we all just collapse on the ground in the tall grass,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: like right next to the field, right next to the
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: food plot. And fast forward, you know, the next twenty
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: minutes or whatever. I'm made a couple of yelps. He
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: hammers back. When it gets daylight, he flies down right
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: into the food plot. But Josh and me are laying
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: down because again we didn't have a blind, we didn't
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: have any cover. We just collapsed like right right where
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: we were. So the turkeys coming in and I can
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: see the bird and furtherterres watching the bird, and I'm
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: sitting there in the turkeys at like thirty five yards,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: and he's got the gun, and I'm just sitting laying
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: there behind him watching him, thinking, Okay, when's he going
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: to shoot the bird? When he's gonna shoot the bird?
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: And like the birds at thirty five yards, the birds
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: at thirty yards, the birds twenty five yards, the birds
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: at twenty yards, the birds at fifteen yards, And this
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: whole time, I'm like what's he doing? What's he doing?
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: And then he he turns looks at me and he said,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: are you ready. I'm like, dude, I'm not doing anything here, man,
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: it's all you shoot the bird thenny. Then he finally
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: gets down on his knees and suits the bird and
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: chases it down and all that. That poor guy, That
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: poor guy. I think. I think, Spencer, we need to
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: have a Wired to Hunt podcast that Mark isn't even on,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: but we bring further in to talk shit on Mark
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: for a whole hour. Yep. Yeah. The key the key
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: thing that makes this so so much better for me
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: those that I have the keys to the uploads. So
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: so I always get to I always get to make
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: Josh be the butt of my jokes. He's a good sport.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: He's a very good sport. He keeps that and he's
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: killed plenty of birds and he gives us a good
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: thing to laugh about every once in a while. So
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: cool man. Well, do you guys have any final thoughts
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: on turkeys before we wrap this one up? I have
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: a I have a p s A on something that's
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: been sweeping the turkey hunting nation, and that is the
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: like hashtag long bird and hashtag snood to tail. Are
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: you guys familiar with that? Yeah, I got called out
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: because I didn't provide that measurement on there. And I
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: guess I'm not trendy enough to know that there is
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: a new measurement that actually does not go into the
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: actual scoring of a bird. So this was started by
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: the guys at the hunting public like Zach and Aaron. Uh.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: And I I believe it's just like kind of poke
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: fun at the idea of like chopy turkey hunting or
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: the idea I got you you know, like that's ridiculous.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: So look at this ridiculous measurement kind of thing. It
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: was something that they had started a couple of years ago.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: But now that they have their own deal going, uh,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: that they can kinda you know, talk about freely. And
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: and so everybody, everybody detail measurements from what I missed. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: So now that this is the hunting public thing, So
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: get your snoo detail MEASU truments out there. When you
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: upload him, tag the hunting public. Sam sohold. He is
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: a huge promoter of snood detail, So tag him. Take myself,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I'm I'm interested in this. I believe the record holder
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: for this season so far is uh Matt McCormick from Sitka.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: He shot a fifty two inch, which is ginormous from
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: the little bit of uh, you know, information gathering that
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: that I've seen. So last week I killed the forty
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: nine inches, which is pretty good, but it's no fifty two.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: And so get get those snow detail measurements. Uh what
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: do they pay? What do they pay you for this plug? Dude?
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: H Well, the one rule they said is you're supposed
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: to have fun and uh, you're supposed to have a
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: loose snood when you measure it. So no stretching the
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: snood out. Um. But let's hear those long bird measurements
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: this season, all right? And with that, I guess we
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: will wrap up our turkey talk of the year. Thanks,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: thanks guys for sticking with us. Gotta have a loose nude.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: And that is it for episode two eleven. Couple quick reminders.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: If you haven't yet left a rating or review on iTunes,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: please do that. It does not take very long. All

- 1:32:22Speaker 1: If you want to leave more feedback, you can do that.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: We appreciate that. Um. Also, as I mentioned, a couple
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: of weeks back. We're posting more videos over on YouTube,

- 1:32:33Speaker 1: And finally, I guess we'll just end this right off

- 1:32:39Speaker 1: your attention, thanks for your time, good luck out there
