Latest / Foul Territory / Buck Showalter joins Birdland
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, welcome into a new addition of Birdland Territory. Steve,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Brad and Tim and are three man. That grouping has
- 0:13Speaker 1: been joined by a fourth who needs no introduction, but
- 0:17Speaker 1: we'll give him one briefly. Bucks show Walter, the former
- 0:19Speaker 1: skipper the Orioles seventeen hundred wins managing is the second
- 0:23Speaker 1: winning is manager in Oiel history, behind the great Earl
- 0:26Speaker 1: Weaver and Buck. You guys had some special times in Birdland.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We appreciate you being our first guest on Birdland Territory.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Really well, thanks for asking.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Nobody's that busy and nobody's that important for sure, but
- 0:41Speaker 3: got a couple of my favorite guys.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Brad made us all look real smart. You know.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I was talking to a coach the other day for
- 0:48Speaker 3: another club. I said, if somebody walked in there and
- 0:51Speaker 3: asked you a question why you guys were struggling, what
- 0:55Speaker 3: would you tell me? Goes well, Number one is we
- 0:57Speaker 3: don't have very good players. Number two, our players aren't
- 1:00Speaker 3: very good. Number three, our players aren't very good. We
- 1:03Speaker 3: had really good players. See, we had good players, and
- 1:06Speaker 3: the smartest thing you do is get out of their
- 1:08Speaker 3: way and let them play.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You know, when you look back on your tenure, Man,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I think people might forget that. I mean, you inherited
- 1:18Speaker 1: forty games under that team was really really struggling back
- 1:20Speaker 1: in twenty ten. When you took over, immediately you guys
- 1:23Speaker 1: had winning record and then of course three playoffs and
- 1:27Speaker 1: so many wings. The place was rocking, Delman Youngstead, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: mean so many. It was just so much fun to
- 1:33Speaker 1: be around oriel baseball. Whether you're a media fan whatever,
- 1:36Speaker 1: But what are some of the memories that jumped the
- 1:39Speaker 1: top of mind when you think about being in the
- 1:41Speaker 1: dugout in Baltimore?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Oh gosh, Stee. You know, looking back on it, it was
- 1:46Speaker 3: so special to kind of live it through the players,
- 1:50Speaker 3: you know, and I used to love to take in
- 1:53Speaker 3: you know, they're you know, satisfaction and getting a return
- 1:57Speaker 3: for what they were doing.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You know, this may sound crazy.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I remember getting off the bus Brad, do you remember
- 2:02Speaker 3: this at Camden Yards in twenty fourteen after we had
- 2:06Speaker 3: swept the Tigers and the turnout of the fans let
- 2:10Speaker 3: and the players walking through that gauntlet of fans. It
- 2:15Speaker 3: kind of because we got back the next day. Because
- 2:17Speaker 3: you don't know if you're gonna winn or lose that game,
- 2:18Speaker 3: so you need make the reservation for that night at
- 2:20Speaker 3: the hotel. And I just sat remember then the flip
- 2:25Speaker 3: side of that are getting eliminated, and that saved group
- 2:27Speaker 3: of people waiting on us when we got back from
- 2:31Speaker 3: Kansas City. Those are little things that probably don't sound
- 2:35Speaker 3: I don't know, cool, but that's what sticks in my mind.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It's a snapshot of Oriel fans. They just want you
- 2:43Speaker 3: to be good, and they want you to be something
- 2:45Speaker 3: that they can trust. When they're staying up late at
- 2:49Speaker 3: night when you're playing the Mariners on the West Coast
- 2:51Speaker 3: and they're late and tired for work the next day,
- 2:55Speaker 3: it matters to them and they'ren't asking much.
- 2:58Speaker 2: There's not a lot of heirs in Baltimore. I love it.
- 3:02Speaker 3: They don't think about how big your car is or
- 3:03Speaker 3: how big your house, how much money you got. They
- 3:06Speaker 3: just you know, Steve, you know they that's been passed
- 3:09Speaker 3: down for generation and generation. It's a special place for baseball.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it really was. And I honestly forgot about that
- 3:19Speaker 4: until you just said it and gave me chills thinking
- 3:21Speaker 4: about it. When we walked off that bus and just
- 3:23Speaker 4: having that era it was just it was I mean,
- 3:26Speaker 4: I think it was when I always think about the
- 3:29Speaker 4: Doma Young double, But I was thinking this morning of
- 3:32Speaker 4: that story in Detroit. Zach started that ninth inning against
- 3:35Speaker 4: the Tigers, Game three with two doubles, and I just
- 3:37Speaker 4: remember hearing the story of you coming out to the
- 3:39Speaker 4: mound and you're telling we're gonna walk in Cassis, You're
- 3:42Speaker 4: gonna put the winning run on first base. Do you
- 3:44Speaker 4: remember that at all or can you kind of recollect
- 3:46Speaker 4: about that? Because I thought that was one of the
- 3:48Speaker 4: cooler stories, just thinking this morning.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, when I was, when we were, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 3: I was getting ready for that series. The matchup I
- 3:54Speaker 3: didn't like, and there weren't many matchups that I didn't like.
- 3:57Speaker 2: With Zach. I didn't like.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Castle longas he's a down hitter, lowball one typically for
- 4:04Speaker 3: a right hand hitter. You know, he smothered the ball
- 4:07Speaker 3: up and didn't do a whole lot of damage, but
- 4:09Speaker 3: the ball down, and I just and I said to myself,
- 4:12Speaker 3: boring that series, I have a chance to keep him
- 4:14Speaker 3: from hurt us against Zach, I was.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Going to do it. And sure enough, here it came.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Now, if you remember, right, they had pinshit earlier in
- 4:22Speaker 3: the game and the people hitting in the bottom of
- 4:25Speaker 3: order and their pinchhitter, there wasn't a whole lot of
- 4:28Speaker 3: damage behind him there, So you know, what do you
- 4:33Speaker 3: call it whistling.
- 4:33Speaker 2: In the graveyard?
- 4:34Speaker 3: When I went out there, I said, here's what we're
- 4:36Speaker 3: going to do, is Zach, We're gonna walk this guy.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You know, Zach didn't want to walk anybody, but I
- 4:40Speaker 3: didn't give him much choice. That's you know, you don't
- 4:42Speaker 3: want to put him in that in that spot. These
- 4:44Speaker 3: guys had always ask a picture if they want to
- 4:46Speaker 3: walk somebody, well, if your picture's not very good, if
- 4:49Speaker 3: he says yes, I do you know, that's your job.
- 4:51Speaker 3: That's not that's not their job. And I said, we're
- 4:55Speaker 3: going to get this guy to roll over the ground
- 4:56Speaker 3: ball here, We're going to get on the bus and
- 4:58Speaker 3: go home. And and I'm leaving the mount.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I go, I don't know about that, you know, but I.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Remember Ryan Flairt he was playing third, said it's a
- 5:08Speaker 3: ball one hopping and he was getting ready to throw
- 5:11Speaker 3: on the second he went.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Are you shipting me? Yeah?
- 5:16Speaker 4: That's I remember talking to Flash about that, and he
- 5:18Speaker 4: was just like the guy came out and was just like,
- 5:21Speaker 4: we're gonna walk a ready ground ball and we're gonna
- 5:23Speaker 4: end this thing and go back home. And I just
- 5:25Speaker 4: that was so cool. Obviously it worked out the way
- 5:27Speaker 4: it did, But uh.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I've had something that didn't. Did you you know the
- 5:33Speaker 3: Delman Young game? Had you pitched in that game? I
- 5:36Speaker 3: haven't looked at the box lately.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I was. I was the pitcher that ended that
- 5:39Speaker 4: that inning before that.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, So you know what's funny about that is,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you know this is the way bullpens. Our bullpen worked.
- 5:49Speaker 3: There didn't need to be a phone call made. Dom
- 5:52Speaker 3: chety knew the situation. Brad, I mean Zach would be
- 5:55Speaker 3: on the mound with a ball. There were Steve, there
- 5:58Speaker 3: were three calls we made. We made a a red,
- 6:01Speaker 3: which was get the ball, get your jacket off, get
- 6:03Speaker 3: on the rubber if you're not throwing. But we didn't
- 6:05Speaker 3: want to draw home anybody, but be ready so we
- 6:08Speaker 3: don't have to go through. If you got to use
- 6:10Speaker 3: the bathroom, go to the bathroom. Everything was read and then
- 6:12Speaker 3: there was a kind of a yellow where you got
- 6:14Speaker 3: going and there's a chance you might go in. Then
- 6:16Speaker 3: if you got the green, you were in the game
- 6:18Speaker 3: and you were not going to be dry humped, so
- 6:21Speaker 3: I didn't even have to call down to the bullpen.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I remember as Delman as JJ slid across home plate,
- 6:27Speaker 3: I glanced up at the bullpen and Dom already had
- 6:30Speaker 3: him throwing. But that's the cohesionve cohesiveness of a bullpen
- 6:35Speaker 3: that I don't see as much anymore.
- 6:37Speaker 2: If I walked in a ballpark and want to look.
- 6:39Speaker 3: At one thing to tell me, if a manager knew
- 6:41Speaker 3: what he was doing, I'd watch his bullpen.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I just watch how he gets his guys up and down.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Very interesting. Buck Showalter is with us our first guest

- 8:01Speaker 1: Gold Birdland Territory with you today again with Steve brad
- 8:05Speaker 1: And and Tim talking with Buck Show wafter and Tim.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You're up.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Yeah, Bucky, you were talking about the bullpen and when
- 8:14Speaker 7: you think of the twenty twelve through sixteen teams, you
- 8:17Speaker 7: think of just the thump in that lineup. There were
- 8:19Speaker 7: four straight years of your guys leading the league in
- 8:22Speaker 7: American leading the league in homers for an individual in
- 8:26Speaker 7: the American League that the bullpen was lights out, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 7: in particular twenty fourteen. When you think of Brad and
- 8:33Speaker 7: you think Andrew Miller, you think of Darren O'Day, Zach
- 8:36Speaker 7: Britten and so on and so forth, Like how much
- 8:39Speaker 7: of a luxury is that for a manager having that
- 8:42Speaker 7: caliber of bullpen?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Well, you know, there were certain things that when we
- 8:46Speaker 3: were we talk a lot about who are we and
- 8:50Speaker 3: how are we going to do it? You know, when
- 8:52Speaker 3: we got mister Angelos to put us on par with
- 8:55Speaker 3: the Yankees with the salaries for six year free agents,
- 8:58Speaker 3: Well we could get those guys like Steve Pearce and
- 9:02Speaker 3: different guys. There's no way any team should out opportunity and.
- 9:07Speaker 2: We could out.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We talked a lot about what could we do that
- 9:09Speaker 3: the Yankees and the other teams with the bigger payrolls
- 9:12Speaker 3: couldn't do. We get out relationship, we could out coach,
- 9:14Speaker 3: we could out you know, opportunity people, we could out
- 9:20Speaker 3: and you know, developing them of players. And I think
- 9:25Speaker 3: putting those bullfens together and making runs matter is a
- 9:30Speaker 3: big mentality for a team to not think how many
- 9:34Speaker 3: are enough? Tonight there's a real inconsistency there and the
- 9:37Speaker 3: versatility of it. You know, Darren wasn't just a right
- 9:39Speaker 3: I mean, Brad wasn't a right on the right guy.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And later on Darren O'Day.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Figured out with that little upshoot he had, Brad was
- 9:47Speaker 3: he figured out a way to defend himself against left
- 9:49Speaker 3: handed hitters, and Zach against right hand hitters, and Jim
- 9:53Speaker 3: Johnson a lot of people forget how good he was,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and Michael Gibbons was a piece for us.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Down there, but you know, we knew.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And you know when I watched some of the teams
- 10:03Speaker 3: today without going into the Oriel teams, but if you
- 10:06Speaker 3: look at J. J. Hardy, Mannimachiado, John Chris Davis, Markkus
- 10:11Speaker 3: and Jones and the Waters, all those guys are plus defenders.
- 10:15Speaker 3: If the ball stayed in the ballpark, we were going
- 10:17Speaker 3: to catch it and we were going to turn two
- 10:20Speaker 3: outs with one batted ball in the middle of the diamond.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And that was one of our prerequisites. That's who we were.
- 10:25Speaker 3: We were going to catch the ball and play defense,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and we were going to put together a bullpen that
- 10:30Speaker 3: would make runs matter. And nowadays, I just don't think
- 10:34Speaker 3: with all the analytics that they really know how to
- 10:36Speaker 3: evaluate defense. Really, I think that's one of the big
- 10:40Speaker 3: challenges they have, is trying to properly and that really
- 10:43Speaker 3: requires eyeballs from people that know what they're looking at.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Buck.
- 10:50Speaker 1: One of the most special times for me being around
- 10:53Speaker 1: the Orioles as a kid who grew up loving the
- 10:55Speaker 1: Oriols in Baltimore got to cover my hometown team was
- 10:58Speaker 1: the Statue ceremonies twenty twelve. Watching those great parade there
- 11:03Speaker 1: and people cheer him, and how you and your team
- 11:06Speaker 1: embraced those guys made it even better. And Earl Weaver,
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think the night I try to remember, I tried
- 11:13Speaker 1: to find this quote, but I think Arl might have
- 11:15Speaker 1: said something like, my statue looks like Buck, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and everybody just loved that because they were loving what
- 11:21Speaker 1: you were doing. But they loved this guy forever, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: of course he sensed his past. But I mean, what
- 11:27Speaker 1: was it like you getting to know at the end
- 11:31Speaker 1: of his life a little better than probably you had.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Earl Weaver.
- 11:34Speaker 3: You know, we invited him down the Spring Train and
- 11:36Speaker 3: we weren't sure of his health and everything he was
- 11:38Speaker 3: going to take us up on it, but he made
- 11:41Speaker 3: it over there.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Steve, and I gotta tell you.
- 11:43Speaker 3: After a couple of cups of black coffee, putting him
- 11:46Speaker 3: in the golf cart and going around to the.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Drills, it was on. Let me tell you, it was on.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And he was talking about different stuff and how you
- 11:54Speaker 3: should cover first and a relaye in the right field
- 11:57Speaker 3: corner with one out and the man on first.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I told him we had a back door pick.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:02Speaker 3: For years the Oils ran a pickoff system with Earl
- 12:06Speaker 3: where they would put five was the pick. One was
- 12:09Speaker 3: back door first base, Five to two was second base,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and you would hit which short stop for second base
- 12:15Speaker 3: and was covering five to three was a picket third
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know from the picture. So five was the pick system.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I remember seeing it in Rochester and Charlotte. I would
- 12:25Speaker 3: see five when I was on second day. So we
- 12:28Speaker 3: set up running a back door pick at first base.
- 12:30Speaker 3: The easter running with Eddie Murray all the time. But
- 12:33Speaker 3: we ran a pick play and Earl was sitting right
- 12:35Speaker 3: next to doug Out. I said, Earl, here comes one
- 12:37Speaker 3: of your play and we ran that back door pick
- 12:40Speaker 3: and I thought, Earl, that was one of the happiest
- 12:43Speaker 3: moments ever seeing that play executed by Earl. That's what
- 12:47Speaker 3: I remember when I think about it. But he meant
- 12:50Speaker 3: so much to so many people, and he was special.
- 12:53Speaker 3: He treated me well, and I'm proud of the way
- 12:57Speaker 3: we treated him.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Yeah, that's great. I can't help but think when I
- 13:02Speaker 4: think about your career and when you started back in
- 13:04Speaker 4: the nineties with the Yankees and finish here recently with
- 13:07Speaker 4: the Mets, what do you think is the biggest difference
- 13:09Speaker 4: of when you were managing with the Yankees back in
- 13:12Speaker 4: the nineties to when you finished in New York at
- 13:14Speaker 4: your last managing job.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I think the prerequisite for a lot of field experience
- 13:21Speaker 3: of home field not nearly as much as people think.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Brad. You know the things you still have to do
- 13:29Speaker 2: to be successful.
- 13:30Speaker 3: I mean, we were doing analytics type stuff back and
- 13:33Speaker 3: my wife used to keep the charts and we would
- 13:35Speaker 3: put it in a big notebook.
- 13:37Speaker 2: She'll tell you a dotted.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Line for ground ball, a hump back for a fly ball,
- 13:41Speaker 3: streat line for line drive, and she would I would
- 13:43Speaker 3: bring home the thing and she would try all the games.
- 13:45Speaker 3: This is a New York penal league, and we would
- 13:48Speaker 3: set our defense accordingly. Now that's five or six at
- 13:50Speaker 3: that's compared to you know, this computer system that kicks
- 13:54Speaker 3: out hundreds, so it should be better. But you know,
- 13:58Speaker 3: we were carrying match up sheets around and looking at
- 14:02Speaker 3: guy's history against certain hitters, and it's not as it
- 14:07Speaker 3: changed as near as much as people think it as.
- 14:10Speaker 3: It's still I think, you know, we're all looking at
- 14:13Speaker 3: the same numbers. It just depends on what an organization
- 14:16Speaker 3: chooses to wait. Nobody's invented some new stat that makes
- 14:21Speaker 3: you better. You've got all these different tools. Well, which
- 14:24Speaker 3: one do you do you choose.
- 14:25Speaker 2: To wait on?
- 14:25Speaker 3: Base percentage? Do you choose to wait? Spin rate? Do
- 14:29Speaker 3: you choose to wait? Zone ratings? And defense?
- 14:33Speaker 2: I mean, what do you which one are you going
- 14:35Speaker 2: to chase?
- 14:36Speaker 3: Uh, it's still about some of the absolutes you have
- 14:40Speaker 3: to be good at, though.
- 14:42Speaker 7: Buck, I'm sure you saw Ben McDonald's comments on on
- 14:46Speaker 7: masson after the game and basically, and I agree with it.
- 14:50Speaker 7: It's kind of a bottom line thing where the numbers
- 14:53Speaker 7: are the numbers, and sometimes it can get to a
- 14:55Speaker 7: point where it's paralysis by analysis. But you know, at
- 14:59Speaker 7: the end of the day, it's it's baseball. Like you're saying, Buck,
- 15:02Speaker 7: the game itself hasn't changed. We're just kind of getting
- 15:06Speaker 7: all of this extra information that maybe muddies it up
- 15:10Speaker 7: some Well, someone.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Said with the time, the game is a heartbeat, and
- 15:13Speaker 3: you better stay true to the heartbeat. I gotta tell
- 15:16Speaker 3: you I don't. I heard about Ben's saying and the
- 15:18Speaker 3: apology stuff he was trying to do the next day.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I'm sure someone called him about it. But I don't watch.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Massing a lot now that Steve and Brad aren't at
- 15:26Speaker 3: Brad's on there. Steve, I might watch it a little bit.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Doesn't have much lure. I talked to palmer a the
- 15:32Speaker 3: other day. He's not doing as many games as you
- 15:34Speaker 3: used to. But uh, you know been uh been a
- 15:42Speaker 3: voice of an opinion that has shared by a lot
- 15:44Speaker 3: of people.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yes, interesting stuff, and so I think you're right, Buck.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I mean there's so it's like, what are you going
- 15:52Speaker 1: to use to be better? And then sometimes he gets
- 15:55Speaker 1: back to did you advance the runner? Did you keep
- 15:58Speaker 1: the double play?
- 15:59Speaker 2: In order? Things? True?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Fifty years ago?
- 16:02Speaker 3: You know, Steve, I used to when Brad was with us,
- 16:05Speaker 3: I would do a thing called analytics for Dummies. I
- 16:08Speaker 3: would take our most grizzled baseball guy. At that point,
- 16:11Speaker 3: I think it was Donald cheety that year, and I'd
- 16:13Speaker 3: had him go sit upstairs with all of Danduquette's people
- 16:18Speaker 3: that all the people we had, they're not you know, it's.
- 16:20Speaker 2: A skeletal crew.
- 16:21Speaker 3: But we still had a lot of analytics and basically
- 16:24Speaker 3: take the cloak off of this thing that nobody understood.
- 16:27Speaker 3: And I would get our thirty on field guys and
- 16:31Speaker 3: we would I said, dom, I wants you to tell
- 16:32Speaker 3: us what it tells you, then tell us what it
- 16:34Speaker 3: doesn't tell you. Don't use abbreviations, you know, if it's
- 16:39Speaker 3: a zone rating, tell me exactly what it is. And
- 16:42Speaker 3: all the coaches would go Terry Crowley would go, wow,
- 16:45Speaker 3: that's all it is.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I said, yeah, let's let's put steer in.
- 16:48Speaker 3: It and embrace it and understand it as much as
- 16:51Speaker 3: they do. There's a lot of things that you understand
- 16:54Speaker 3: that they don't understand. I remember the first time I
- 16:57Speaker 3: heard John scope it over on other field. I said,
- 17:00Speaker 3: who's that kid over there? They said, and they said
- 17:03Speaker 3: something about exit. I said, yeah, I don't need to
- 17:05Speaker 3: look at the exit Colossie. I can hear him. There's
- 17:08Speaker 3: a clean click that good hitters make. Well, that's not
- 17:11Speaker 3: their fault. If they don't have that experience, so you know,
- 17:15Speaker 3: embrace them.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Ice. Tell guys, hey, bring all that stuff in my office.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But I'm going to.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Ask you at the end of it, how does it
- 17:21Speaker 3: help us win a game? How does it help us
- 17:23Speaker 3: win a game? I don't want you to be the
- 17:24Speaker 3: director of left handed Sliders in the Dirt.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I want you to tell us how to how to
- 17:29Speaker 2: win a game.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Help us win again, exactly, But show authors with us
- 17:33Speaker 1: today on Birdland Territory. We're gonna roll on next on
- 17:37Speaker 1: the show.

- 17:49Speaker 5: It's nice, it's soft, if it's really well, it's great
- 17:53Speaker 5: for summer down here in Florida. And I got a
- 17:56Speaker 5: couple of linen shirts and linen pants that are gonna
- 17:58Speaker 5: look nice when I go to Europe.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Here in a couple of weeks.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Oh, very nice.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Yeah, it's very smooth, very thin. I'm wearing the eighteen
- 18:05Speaker 6: hour jersey short and Heather Gray. I'll leave that down
- 18:08Speaker 6: here for you and the PEMA short sleeve Henley. The
- 18:11Speaker 6: color on mine is desert spring, but it really resonates it.

- 18:39Speaker 1: You know, I think Buck and the players and staff
- 18:41Speaker 1: of his era are remembered for so many things, but
- 18:44Speaker 1: among them. In twenty twelve and the Oil's got to
- 18:47Speaker 1: the playoffs. Stan been there in fourteen years. This city
- 18:50Speaker 1: and this fan base needed postseason, and Buck and the
- 18:54Speaker 1: Birds got there two years later, first day out of
- 18:57Speaker 1: the East. And since nineteen ninety seven, I mean been
- 19:00Speaker 1: a minute. And Brad you were part of all that,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and you got another question to comment for Buck.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I just think back to our teams, with the
- 19:07Speaker 4: amount of time we spent on the little things and
- 19:10Speaker 4: on the backfield, we were doing the plays until we
- 19:13Speaker 4: got it right over and over. Why do you think
- 19:15Speaker 4: there is this I guess nonchalantness with fundamentals and getting
- 19:21Speaker 4: the things right. It kind of just seems like that
- 19:23Speaker 4: has gone by the wayside. I thought, coming to an
- 19:24Speaker 4: American League TEAMO, We're not gonna work on bun plays
- 19:27Speaker 4: a lot that doesn't really happen. But we worked on
- 19:29Speaker 4: that over and over until we got it right. And
- 19:31Speaker 4: I can just think back to how many games we
- 19:33Speaker 4: won based off of keeping them from getting the extra
- 19:36Speaker 4: ninety Do you know, do you have any reason why
- 19:39Speaker 4: that stuff has kind of just been on the back
- 19:41Speaker 4: burner now? Is it because of the analytics stuff or
- 19:43Speaker 4: the just I don't know. We watch these games with
- 19:46Speaker 4: the orials and it's just the fundamentals just kind of
- 19:49Speaker 4: seemed to be not the same as they used to be.
- 19:52Speaker 3: You know, Brad, that's a good I get that. Somebody
- 19:55Speaker 3: I don't get it. I don't get mad at the players.
- 19:57Speaker 3: It's not their fault. It's not their fault, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 3: shame on you for not you know, I think down
- 20:03Speaker 3: deep they want to embrace things like that. I can
- 20:06Speaker 3: remember back in my early years managing as we would,
- 20:09Speaker 3: we were required to meet in front of the dugout
- 20:11Speaker 3: and go over yesterday's all the things that allowed us
- 20:15Speaker 3: to win or lose, what allowed them to win or
- 20:17Speaker 3: lose the other team, and we would dissect it instead
- 20:19Speaker 3: of you know, we all want to go to what
- 20:21Speaker 3: happened in the ninth inn and well, something happened in the
- 20:23Speaker 3: second inning that won or lost that ballgame. And you
- 20:27Speaker 3: know there's six basic team defenses and you don't do
- 20:31Speaker 3: them too. You get them right, you do them too,
- 20:33Speaker 3: you can't get them wrong. And we you know, Brad,
- 20:36Speaker 3: we didn't stay on the field forever, but there was
- 20:38Speaker 3: a certain you know, see, we used to go from
- 20:41Speaker 3: we would start with the staff meeting in the morning. Okay,
- 20:43Speaker 3: today we're going over rundowns. And then we would go
- 20:47Speaker 3: into the room, the big room we put in in Sarasota,
- 20:50Speaker 3: and go over it with the players so we could execute.
- 20:53Speaker 3: And I didn't want a bunch of people popping their
- 20:55Speaker 3: lips out on the field.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You know, it was supposed to be execution of the play.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And then so there were three parts there every day,
- 21:01Speaker 3: and we did, you know, the coaching staff had to
- 21:03Speaker 3: be together and how we were going to teach it.
- 21:05Speaker 3: The players had to have an understanding of what we expected.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Then you went on the field and the executed the play.
- 21:10Speaker 3: And then, as Brad remembers, we used to do a
- 21:13Speaker 3: pope Porie at the end of the spring where we
- 21:15Speaker 3: would do all the team defenses rapid fire, because you
- 21:20Speaker 3: think you've got them on pield seven on the back field,
- 21:23Speaker 3: but until you can do them at call and execute them. Okay, Brad,
- 21:28Speaker 3: first and second back door pick at first base. Okay,
- 21:32Speaker 3: ground ball back to you. It's a one two, you know,
- 21:35Speaker 3: three double play. Just the rapid fire po Poria. And
- 21:40Speaker 3: Brad will remember we used to go down to a
- 21:42Speaker 3: theater the night before the first workout started and we
- 21:45Speaker 3: would go over all the expectations and all the things
- 21:48Speaker 3: because the thing that players hate is the unknown. Just
- 21:53Speaker 3: explain to them exactly what's going on where you know,
- 21:56Speaker 3: what's so expression. If you lie to somebody, they'll never
- 21:58Speaker 3: forgive you. But if you're straight up tell the truth,
- 22:00Speaker 3: you don't have to worry about it. So, you know,
- 22:03Speaker 3: I think when the players took the field there was
- 22:05Speaker 3: a freedom in their brain about what was expected of them.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I know, we got bred over in the trade. We
- 22:12Speaker 3: felt like he could be a piece in our pin and.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He was Buck.
- 22:18Speaker 7: Steve just mentioned the twenty twelve season and just how
- 22:21Speaker 7: special that was in Baltimore, because, like Steve mentioned earlier,
- 22:25Speaker 7: when you came in end of July and twenty ten,
- 22:28Speaker 7: this organization wasn't exactly in a good shape in the
- 22:32Speaker 7: midst of fourteen consecutive losing seasons. But something that made
- 22:36Speaker 7: that twenty twelve team so special is they were historically
- 22:39Speaker 7: great in close games. Twenty nine and nine and one
- 22:43Speaker 7: run games. They were sixteen and two in extra inning games. Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 7: what what made yeah, what made that team so good
- 22:52Speaker 7: in close game situations?
- 22:54Speaker 3: I think they knew, all things being equal, they had
- 22:57Speaker 3: a confidence about they were not going to when their
- 23:00Speaker 3: fingers on the trigger. They knew that they were prepared
- 23:03Speaker 3: to execute the things that happened in close games that
- 23:07Speaker 3: separates you, and they embraced them. And there's so many
- 23:13Speaker 3: that Actually some of that started at the end of
- 23:15Speaker 3: twenty eleven the way we finished the season, and I
- 23:19Speaker 3: think it carried on. They got a taste of it,
- 23:21Speaker 3: and you know, it was a hunger. The hunger of
- 23:25Speaker 3: that team matched the hunger of the fan and it
- 23:27Speaker 3: was a great coming together. I remember the last out
- 23:31Speaker 3: in Texas, it was and I tell you, if we'd
- 23:34Speaker 3: had instant replaced Steve, we probably we might have beat
- 23:37Speaker 3: the Yankees because Nate mcloss ball toocked the foul pole
- 23:39Speaker 3: down there and we had no way to not that
- 23:41Speaker 3: I remember it, but you know, we had the Yankees
- 23:46Speaker 3: on the ropes there. I remember we beat them in
- 23:48Speaker 3: Game four at their stadium and put them on their heels,
- 23:55Speaker 3: you know, But not that I remember anything, you know,
- 24:00Speaker 3: and his group though, I remember Family Day, how big
- 24:02Speaker 3: it was for our guys, you know, getting to know
- 24:05Speaker 3: their families. And my wife was involved with the wives,
- 24:08Speaker 3: and there was just a unity among the organization. And
- 24:13Speaker 3: I'm not saying nobody's got that now. I'm just I
- 24:16Speaker 3: know what worked for us. We couldn't not be good
- 24:19Speaker 3: at those things if we wanted to compete with these
- 24:21Speaker 3: teams that had a lot more payroll than we did.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And it was painful when we had to, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 3: turn it over. It was tough trading guys like bread.
- 24:30Speaker 3: It was not fun for me.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Hey, in twenty twelve, at the Yankees don't have a
- 24:35Speaker 1: twenty five million dollar pitcher. Maybe the Orioles win that,
- 24:38Speaker 1: Not that anybody in Birdland remembers that, like to this
- 24:40Speaker 1: day or anything, that they had all the money to
- 24:43Speaker 1: spend to get the guy that made the difference in
- 24:45Speaker 1: the series. We you know, we don't remember that like
- 24:48Speaker 1: it happened yesterday. But Buck, here's what I want to
- 24:50Speaker 1: ask you, man managers today twenty twenty six, social media
- 24:54Speaker 1: age two press conferences at day. Everybody's got a show,
- 24:59Speaker 1: everybody he's got a hot take. Everybody who knows how
- 25:02Speaker 1: to make out the lineup man? How do they balance
- 25:05Speaker 1: that and at times be the player's friend and at
- 25:09Speaker 1: other times be his boss.
- 25:11Speaker 2: But you know, one you got to embrace it. You know.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I did it twice a day for almost seven or
- 25:16Speaker 3: eight months, okay, and it was a can do it
- 25:19Speaker 3: to the fans. But something I learned too. It was
- 25:22Speaker 3: only like a ten minute delay, and I would do
- 25:24Speaker 3: it at camping yards. One of the first things we did,
- 25:26Speaker 3: Steve was move it out of the locker room, and
- 25:29Speaker 3: we wanted to make that film room and advance room,
- 25:31Speaker 3: so we moved it down to the Jilliary locker room.
- 25:33Speaker 3: If you remember, he used to do it right there.
- 25:35Speaker 3: When I got there, I go, we're not doing this anymore.
- 25:37Speaker 3: This is a player's locker room, it's not.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Now.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I actually made the locker room smaller instead of bigger,
- 25:42Speaker 3: so we could put a dining room in the back.
- 25:45Speaker 3: But you know, I would go down there and now
- 25:47Speaker 3: I would come back and be a ten minute delay,
- 25:49Speaker 3: and there'd be a lot of the players sitting around
- 25:51Speaker 3: watching the press conference, and it hit me how much
- 25:54Speaker 3: they watched this, So you could you know the tenor
- 25:57Speaker 3: in which you talk to people and the fans.
- 26:00Speaker 2: You need to embrace it. Now.
- 26:01Speaker 3: I never read articles. I never watched any TV interview,
- 26:07Speaker 3: not that they weren't good. I just I didn't want
- 26:09Speaker 3: to interact with those people every day and listen to.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Every little thing they were writing or saying.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So I would walk in with Monica or Christian Hudek
- 26:18Speaker 3: and I would say, hey, before we walk in, here
- 26:20Speaker 3: is anything I need to know about because I haven't
- 26:22Speaker 3: read or talked or anything. Just I don't want to
- 26:25Speaker 3: be ambushed. But that was the That was basically what happened.
- 26:30Speaker 3: They just I said, give me a heads up, and
- 26:33Speaker 3: it gave me a clear mind about talking to everybody
- 26:36Speaker 3: every day and not having some vendetta against somebody that
- 26:40Speaker 3: was say Berry and Brad after one bad outing, because
- 26:43Speaker 3: that would.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Really kick me out.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Todd Father, I'm a last minute guy. Sometimes you're a
- 26:48Speaker 6: last minute guy where you all of a sudden see
- 26:50Speaker 6: a night open up and you want to go grab
- 26:52Speaker 6: some tickets, and you hadn't gotten them already, So you're
- 26:55Speaker 6: going to seek Geek and you're going to go look
- 26:57Speaker 6: for a green dot and see where the good seats
- 26:59Speaker 6: are in the good value is and have a little
- 27:01Speaker 6: night with the fam.
- 27:02Speaker 8: Right without a doubt. And I'm looking for some of
- 27:05Speaker 8: the best seats. I'm looking for that green dot. When
- 27:07Speaker 8: I get that, it's a simple plug it in, use
- 27:10Speaker 8: your hands, go right on your screen, your phone, whatever
- 27:14Speaker 8: platform you can get it on. And it's so simple.
- 27:16Speaker 8: They make it so easy for you to do. Even
- 27:20Speaker 8: my son can do it if I ask them. Hey, Blikester,
- 27:22Speaker 8: let's go man, get on there for us, find us
- 27:24Speaker 8: a couple of seats so we can watch even that
- 27:26Speaker 8: Subway series that would be fantastic.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Seat Geek has it.
- 27:29Speaker 8: All there for you.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 27:33Speaker 6: It's territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 27:35Speaker 6: your next set of tickets. It's a ten percent off
- 27:37Speaker 6: any tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 27:40Speaker 6: you click the link in the description download the app.
- 27:43Speaker 6: Then the code is automatically added to your account so
- 27:45Speaker 6: you can use it later.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Obviously what I think about is your bullpen management. I mean,
- 27:50Speaker 4: my arm thanks you to this day. I could still
- 27:52Speaker 4: play catch with my kids because of how you're able
- 27:54Speaker 4: to do. But what was the preparation like for a
- 27:57Speaker 4: day of getting a bullpen ready that day? And how
- 28:00Speaker 4: are you able to not get us up multiple times
- 28:03Speaker 4: and save us by the end of the season.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Brad, would you play eleven years?
- 28:07Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 28:09Speaker 2: See that?
- 28:09Speaker 3: That to me, I have so much pride, not that
- 28:11Speaker 3: I didn't any to do it, but that's special. You
- 28:14Speaker 3: know those days of people because the way that they
- 28:18Speaker 3: handle bullpens today, a guy pitching ten or eleven years
- 28:21Speaker 3: is gonna be hard to find. But you know, it
- 28:24Speaker 3: would start with the night before. We would never start
- 28:28Speaker 3: a game without knowing who's pitching. If the guy got
- 28:33Speaker 3: hit with a line drive with the first pitch, you
- 28:36Speaker 3: know we had we had these things called a longer
- 28:38Speaker 3: lever that were so important in a bullpen.
- 28:40Speaker 2: TJ.
- 28:41Speaker 3: McFarlane dance Worthy. These guys could take the baseball and
- 28:45Speaker 3: one of the things you didn't do was send them
- 28:47Speaker 3: down after they did their job. Don't send them down
- 28:51Speaker 3: because they did their job. And we did it with
- 28:54Speaker 3: seven pitchers, sometimes six, and but a longer lever. Can
- 28:58Speaker 3: you tell me five guys and big lei'es right now
- 29:00Speaker 3: are longer levers now they're called bulk guys, whatever that is.
- 29:04Speaker 3: But I'm my starter to be the bull guy. But
- 29:08Speaker 3: you know, it would start there and we would meet
- 29:09Speaker 3: before the game. I love how these people think these
- 29:11Speaker 3: pregame meetings are new. But we would gather information all day.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I love batting practice back when guys used to actually
- 29:19Speaker 3: hit outside. I would walk around and talk to the
- 29:22Speaker 3: bullpen guys, as you remember, and I would talk to
- 29:24Speaker 3: the position players who weren't playing that day, the starting
- 29:28Speaker 3: pitcher and the nine guys and anybody that need to
- 29:31Speaker 3: you know, okay, what do they need to hear from you?
- 29:33Speaker 3: And I would talk to the guys directly without making
- 29:36Speaker 3: them feel like they had to pitch. It's okay if
- 29:39Speaker 3: you need today. And then there might be something you
- 29:41Speaker 3: would say to Dave Wallace or dom Cheti that you
- 29:45Speaker 3: may not say to me, And that's okay, but we
- 29:47Speaker 3: would gather all this information in about an hour for
- 29:50Speaker 3: the game. We would go over this and then make
- 29:54Speaker 3: sure that you guys knew in the bullpen that day
- 29:56Speaker 3: exactly what was coming. So if I you remember, sometimes
- 30:00Speaker 3: I'd say stay up in the dugout today, just don't
- 30:03Speaker 3: even go down the bulpen to day.
- 30:05Speaker 2: But you guys are so close. You wanted to be
- 30:06Speaker 2: down there, but everybody was on.
- 30:09Speaker 3: The same page, and there was conflict communication about you know,
- 30:13Speaker 3: we would never, for instance, want to go into Yankee
- 30:16Speaker 3: Stadium without both left handed relievers ready because they were
- 30:19Speaker 3: so left handed Atlanta And nowadays these guys, you know,
- 30:23Speaker 3: shoot everything for one game and they wonder why they
- 30:26Speaker 3: can't maintain something for a long period.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Baseball is a long season. You got to live to
- 30:31Speaker 2: fight another day sometimes.
- 30:32Speaker 3: That's why Chris Davis pitches in Fenway Park sometimes.
- 30:39Speaker 7: Buck, you mentioned twenty eighteen a little bit earlier saying
- 30:44Speaker 7: how tough it was to trade Brad and we talked
- 30:47Speaker 7: about that season I think a week ago, and you
- 30:49Speaker 7: think twelve through sixteen, you win the most games in
- 30:52Speaker 7: the American League, and that twenty eighteen season sort of
- 30:56Speaker 7: felt like this last hurrah.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:58Speaker 7: A lot of guys were in during contract years, and
- 31:01Speaker 7: including yourself and Dan Duquet. What was it like heading
- 31:06Speaker 7: into that season? And well, why do you think it
- 31:10Speaker 7: went sideways?
- 31:11Speaker 2: Well, the window was closing. The window was closing, a
- 31:15Speaker 2: lot of the a lot of.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Advantages that big market teams have start showing up for
- 31:20Speaker 3: the It doesn't mean you can't do it, but you
- 31:23Speaker 3: got to kind of turn it over sometimes. I hate
- 31:26Speaker 3: to say, the only thing that keeps it from turning
- 31:29Speaker 3: over is if you have your farm system really producing,
- 31:33Speaker 3: and we really weren't doing that, and our guys, the
- 31:38Speaker 3: gap between when somebody was going to be ready was
- 31:42Speaker 3: pretty wide. And I didn't even know really what was
- 31:45Speaker 3: going on. It was because I had a lot of
- 31:47Speaker 3: players and say, hey, so and so has been traded,
- 31:50Speaker 3: so and so has been traded, and I get it.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Dan's operating Duquet, you know, very quickly, a lot of
- 31:55Speaker 3: moving parts and.
- 31:56Speaker 2: He didn't even tell me anything.
- 31:57Speaker 3: But it was it was tough having those conversations with
- 32:01Speaker 3: guys very quickly. You know, people that I've come to
- 32:04Speaker 3: really you know, like and respect, and all of a
- 32:07Speaker 3: sudden you just say see you later.
- 32:09Speaker 2: It felt very, very cold. To me, I thought it
- 32:13Speaker 2: was tough.
- 32:15Speaker 3: It's a tough thing when baseball reminds you of the
- 32:18Speaker 3: business that can be sometimes.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Yeah, the Oriol's gone through some of those ups and downs.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Now they've rebuilt again. They got back to the playoffs
- 32:26Speaker 1: two years in a row. But some fan, well most
- 32:29Speaker 1: Oil fans recalled they have not won a playoff game
- 32:31Speaker 1: or a playoff series since your group was there. Twenty
- 32:34Speaker 1: Fourteen's a long time, but Buck, we're about out of
- 32:38Speaker 1: time speaking a time. Man, thank you for yours today
- 32:41Speaker 1: being so generous. And I could sit here listen to
- 32:43Speaker 1: you talk about our weaver for that would be a
- 32:45Speaker 1: whole hour show. I'd love to do that one day.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I could do that, and I don't need anything else.
- 32:51Speaker 1: But the reason that's special is because you two men
- 32:53Speaker 1: are special to Ballimore. People will never forget what both
- 32:57Speaker 1: you did and your groups did. And Man, so nice
- 33:01Speaker 1: of you to share some thoughts today.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate it. I'm gonna try to get I
- 33:04Speaker 3: think Chris is going in the Hall of Fame this year,
- 33:07Speaker 3: and we went in for Adams thing. Heck, I made
- 33:09Speaker 3: it back for a Savannah Bananas game.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I don't expect you to be managing in that league.
- 33:18Speaker 2: That's probably the only league I can still manage it.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I don't think that's true. Hey, Buck, we enjoy your
- 33:24Speaker 1: work on all the broadcasts. You got some more broadcasting
- 33:26Speaker 1: coming up anytime soon.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I gotta tell you, Steve, commercial travel has turned into
- 33:31Speaker 3: such a tough thing. You want to get down in society,
- 33:35Speaker 3: go through airports. We all got all of the charter flights.
- 33:39Speaker 3: But man, yes, I will do some now and then.
- 33:42Speaker 3: I'm pretty picky about it because commercial travel is tough.
- 33:46Speaker 3: It's tough, as you guys all know. It's not like
- 33:50Speaker 3: it used to be.
- 33:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:51Speaker 3: I looked around the other day and that and five
- 33:54Speaker 3: people on the flight had a pajamason.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I went, oh my gosh, you were not one of them.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Obviously, I was jealous. I wish I could. Hey, good
- 34:08Speaker 2: to see you guys. Thanks for having me. Bradley, you're
- 34:10Speaker 2: good man, God bless you.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Take care, Thank you, Thanks Buck, Buck Show Walter joining
- 34:16Speaker 1: us today. And thanks to Tim and Brad and Buck.
- 34:19Speaker 1: And we'll see you next time on Birdland Territory.
