- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hey, good afternoon. So there is a chance that one
- 0:18Speaker 2: of the dumber Easter rules may change in time for
- 0:21Speaker 2: this Easter. Currently, you're not allowed to buy a drink
- 0:23Speaker 2: on Good Friday unless you are staying at the establishment
- 0:26Speaker 2: or order yourself a substantial meal. But Karen McNaughty of
- 0:29Speaker 2: Labor has promoted an amendment to the Sale and Supply
- 0:32Speaker 2: of Alcohol Act in order to change that. It's being
- 0:34Speaker 2: debated today in Parliament and he's with us.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Karen, Hello, Gay, how are you?
- 0:38Speaker 2: And well, thank you. Chances it's done by this Easter.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, well the debate is happening right now. I've literally
- 0:46Speaker 3: stepped out of the house to have a yarn with you,
- 0:48Speaker 3: so we will know the result and probably about an
- 0:51Speaker 3: hour's time.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Chances it passes.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think it's pretty good. The numbers of support has
- 0:58Speaker 3: stayed steady throughout the stages, and this is the furthest
- 1:02Speaker 3: that any attempt to amend Easter rules has got. In fact,
- 1:05Speaker 3: no previous attempt had even got to Select. So the
- 1:09Speaker 3: fact we've got through Select Committee second Reading committee the
- 1:12Speaker 3: whole where now we're on third reading with the same
- 1:15Speaker 3: level of support. I'm pretty confident if it.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Passes, it means that you can go into a pub
- 1:20Speaker 2: on Good Friday, you can order yourself a beer without
- 1:22Speaker 2: ordering a meal. Does it also mean that that pub
- 1:25Speaker 2: owners can keep their pubs open on Good Friday morning
- 1:28Speaker 2: rather than shutting them at midnight like they do on
- 1:30Speaker 2: Thursday night.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yes, it will, and I'm look. The thing is that
- 1:36Speaker 3: on these three and a half days, that the half
- 1:38Speaker 3: day is the morning of Anzac Day, these on licensed
- 1:42Speaker 3: premises have to operate under different rules and they do
- 1:45Speaker 3: any other time of the year. And all I'm proposing
- 1:48Speaker 3: is that on these days the businesses that are already
- 1:51Speaker 3: operating and the workers that are already working anyway, can
- 1:55Speaker 3: just do so under normal conditions. It'll clear up so
- 1:58Speaker 3: much confusion for tourists that just want to have a
- 2:00Speaker 3: pint and have to be told they have to order
- 2:03Speaker 3: a race meal. And I want a race meal where
- 2:05Speaker 3: you have to if you want to have a drink,
- 2:06Speaker 3: it's just nonsense. If they're open anyway, just let them
- 2:09Speaker 3: operate under normal conditions.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Because I'm getting a lot of texts from people like
- 2:12Speaker 2: Nick who says, hey, we've already done rosters for the
- 2:14Speaker 2: next few weeks, and someone else says it's going to
- 2:16Speaker 2: be bad for your voting base because you normally look
- 2:19Speaker 2: after the workers who want to have a break. What
- 2:20Speaker 2: do you say to that.
- 2:22Speaker 3: If this bill was proposing what those that have failed
- 2:25Speaker 3: before me was is that we're changing the trading laws,
- 2:29Speaker 3: then yeah, sure they might have a point, but the
- 2:31Speaker 3: only businesses that are affected by my bill are those
- 2:34Speaker 3: that are open and operating anyway, so the workers are
- 2:38Speaker 3: already working. In fact, if anything, the feedback I've had
- 2:41Speaker 3: from workers is that instead of monitoring what food people
- 2:44Speaker 3: have ordered, they can just operate under normal conditions and
- 2:48Speaker 3: it's better for them. But it's a face of a rule,
- 2:50Speaker 3: you know, the fact that you're required to order a
- 2:53Speaker 3: substantial meal when a substantial meal isn't actually defined. You
- 2:57Speaker 3: have to order it, but you're not actually required to
- 2:59Speaker 3: eat it. You just have to order it in order
- 3:01Speaker 3: to get a drink. It's nonsense.
- 3:02Speaker 2: It's such nonsense. What pub are you hitting on Good Friday?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Then there's a beer guard and small walk from my
- 3:09Speaker 3: house and Maston in which I'll be popping down to
- 3:11Speaker 3: on good Friday, and I might even go out with
- 3:13Speaker 3: the family after Mass on Lisa Sunday Morning.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Wild weekend for you, Kieren, Thanks very much, Kieran Mconaughty
- 3:19Speaker 2: Labor MP.
