Latest / The Craig Way Show / Mississippi State Football Preview with Neil Price

- 0:00Speaker 1: Here on a Friday afternoon. So I took this from
- 0:04Speaker 1: the selfish perspective here because I'm going to go see
- 0:08Speaker 1: the guests who and also with Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the great Randy Backman from Bachman Turner Overdrive, and this
- 0:15Speaker 1: was one of their hits looking out for number one,
- 0:17Speaker 1: which is the way it has to go in the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference. So we continue our SEC football previews as
- 0:23Speaker 1: everybody's trying to as Randy Bockmans had climbed to the top,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and that goes for the Mississippi State Bulldogs as well.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Jeff Levi's ball club getting ready to start his third
- 0:32Speaker 1: season there in Starkville, and as always, so pleased to
- 0:37Speaker 1: be joined by the play by play voice of the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Mississippi State Bulldogs on the hotline with us is Neil Price.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I appreciate the time we've talked about this when we've
- 0:48Speaker 1: done yacht rock stuff before, when I've had you on before, Neil,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and so I know you have an appreciation for also
- 0:55Speaker 1: the classic rock side of things.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, bto in particular, taking Care of Business is
- 1:02Speaker 2: obviously one of the great all time rock songs, and
- 1:07Speaker 2: in this part of the world, When you hear that,
- 1:09Speaker 2: you think of BTO and you also think of Elvis
- 1:12Speaker 2: Presley because Elvis was famous for the TCB band, you know.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So it's yeah, I think when I was listening to
- 1:18Speaker 2: bub coming back, it felt like I needed a Martine
- 1:21Speaker 2: or something, so kind of deal like, you know, we're
- 1:24Speaker 2: just gonna sit back at chill for a little while.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that was kind of that's the kind of clubby
- 1:28Speaker 1: side of Randy Bachman there. Uh uh And that was
- 1:33Speaker 1: a bt O song, but it's funny you uh uh.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm glad you did that the little spoiler alert sneak preview. Uh.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Taking care of business is what we have a little
- 1:42Speaker 1: bit later on in the program. But as we take
- 1:44Speaker 1: care of the business at hand. U. I saw coach
- 1:49Speaker 1: Levy at SEC football media days and uh and you
- 1:53Speaker 1: I've told you this before.
- 1:54Speaker 2: You know this. Uh.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I've known him for a long time, even before he
- 1:57Speaker 1: was assistant coach. I knew him when he was younger,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but as I knew his dad. It was such a
- 2:01Speaker 1: successful high school football coach in Texas as well. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: we hear that you know coaches, certainly it takes them
- 2:09Speaker 1: at least a couple of years to start to ramp
- 2:12Speaker 1: things up, and coming off getting to a Bowl game
- 2:15Speaker 1: last year and being able to do that and trying
- 2:17Speaker 1: to improve on the five and eight mark, do you
- 2:21Speaker 1: since get the sense that, not only for coach Levy
- 2:23Speaker 1: but also for the Bulldogs there is more of an
- 2:28Speaker 1: implanted comfort level now as they get ready to launch
- 2:31Speaker 1: season number three.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I think in terms of the expectation from the players, yes,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think the thing that is kind of always in
- 2:42Speaker 2: flux is that the staff changes. Now, that's not necessarily
- 2:46Speaker 2: a bad thing. Some of that needed to happen, and
- 2:49Speaker 2: I give Jeff a lot of credit because when you're young,
- 2:54Speaker 2: sometimes you come into your first dad coaching job and
- 2:56Speaker 2: it's natural to want to put your stamp on something.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You've got a plan, you want to show the world
- 3:02Speaker 2: that the people who have trusted you to run a
- 3:05Speaker 2: program have made the right decision, and you've got one
- 3:09Speaker 2: confidence in what you're going to do. And I think
- 3:11Speaker 2: Jeff had that when he came here two years ago
- 3:13Speaker 2: to plus, but I think he realized that he's got
- 3:18Speaker 2: to adapt and evolve, and some of that is you
- 3:21Speaker 2: have to bring in new people on your staff to
- 3:23Speaker 2: be able to make that happen. And and to his credit,
- 3:25Speaker 2: he's been willing to do that. So vac Arnett, who
- 3:29Speaker 2: was the defensive coordinator here from Mike Leach and then
- 3:32Speaker 2: was the interim head coach for a season after coach
- 3:35Speaker 2: is passing, is back as the defensive coordinator. Matt brock
- 3:38Speaker 2: Is back with him, who was his co DC and
- 3:41Speaker 2: was a linebackers coach here with Coach Leech. I think
- 3:44Speaker 2: those two guys are great additions and will help that
- 3:47Speaker 2: side of the ball. And then he brought a guy
- 3:50Speaker 2: like Philip Montgomery in who has been a successful college
- 3:53Speaker 2: head coach, a guy that he knows, that he trusts,
- 3:56Speaker 2: that gives him another set of eyes offensively that can
- 4:00Speaker 2: help him, you know, continue to build his scheme, try
- 4:04Speaker 2: to evolve in that way, and just give him some
- 4:07Speaker 2: experience that maybe he doesn't have. I think for somebody
- 4:11Speaker 2: to be willing to go out and make those kind
- 4:13Speaker 2: of moves and surround himself with the best people possible
- 4:17Speaker 2: says a lot about where Jeff is growing as a head.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Coach too well. And I see a commonality here what
- 4:22Speaker 1: you just talked about. Jeff, of course being an outstanding
- 4:26Speaker 1: play caller, but yet willing to have another as you said,
- 4:30Speaker 1: set of eyes on the field, and coach Montgomery Stark
- 4:32Speaker 1: the same way, calling his own plays, but having enough
- 4:36Speaker 1: offensive viewpoint from others there, whether they're analysts or assistant coaches,
- 4:41Speaker 1: things like that. I think coaches are kind of getting
- 4:43Speaker 1: to that point where they realize, hey, I could still
- 4:45Speaker 1: call a place. I just don't have to be the
- 4:47Speaker 1: only set of eyes on the field here, right.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And I think if you're going to do that, and
- 4:53Speaker 2: there are a lot of guys in college football today
- 4:55Speaker 2: who are the head coach slash play caller, I think
- 4:59Speaker 2: if you're going to do that, you need somebody to
- 5:02Speaker 2: kind of look at the big picture so that you
- 5:05Speaker 2: can focus on what your next play needs to be,
- 5:10Speaker 2: or you can focus on making an adjustment, second drive,
- 5:14Speaker 2: third drive as you begin to go deeper into the
- 5:17Speaker 2: game when you're trying to look at a big picture,
- 5:20Speaker 2: plus be that guy when your offense is on the field,
- 5:23Speaker 2: I don't know how guys do it. I don't. I
- 5:25Speaker 2: think it's a lot to try to balance at one time.
- 5:28Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean people wonder why football staffs are
- 5:31Speaker 2: so big. Sure that the number of players is enormous,
- 5:35Speaker 2: but I just think you've got guys who have to
- 5:37Speaker 2: specialize so much within the game that you need those
- 5:41Speaker 2: extra eyes and ears out there to help you be successful,
- 5:44Speaker 2: no doubt about it.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Would you say it also not only on the offenses,
- 5:47Speaker 1: because I know how fans think about this. A lot
- 5:49Speaker 1: of media does as well when they think, okay, the
- 5:51Speaker 1: offensive play calling, maybe there's some help there, whether somebody
- 5:54Speaker 1: else is calling the plays or somebody But on the
- 5:57Speaker 1: defensive side, you mentioned Zach Arnett return and then you've
- 6:00Speaker 1: got Matt Brock who was successful as a DC at
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yukon as well. Having more than one set of eyes
- 6:07Speaker 1: in the coordinating role on both sides of the ball
- 6:09Speaker 1: would seem to be a benefit, and it looks like
- 6:12Speaker 1: the Bulldogs are trying to capitalize there as well.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think two guys who have worked together
- 6:18Speaker 2: before who understand each other, in Zach Barnett and Matt Brock,
- 6:23Speaker 2: I think that piece is important too, because they know
- 6:27Speaker 2: how one another think when it comes to a lot
- 6:29Speaker 2: of things when you're talking about coaching defense. So I
- 6:33Speaker 2: think that piece is huge. And I don't know how
- 6:36Speaker 2: Jeff Levy will be compared to how Mike Leach was
- 6:40Speaker 2: with Zach Barnett, and Matt Brock. But when coach Leach
- 6:43Speaker 2: was here, he basically told coach Barnett, look, I'm not
- 6:47Speaker 2: going to tell you how to do your job. My
- 6:49Speaker 2: job is to go score points. Your job is to
- 6:51Speaker 2: stop the other team. Now, I'm not going to tell
- 6:53Speaker 2: you that I won't go for it on fourth and
- 6:55Speaker 2: twenty from my own eighteen and we'll turn it over.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And I give you a pass because I've pinned you deep.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You still got to go find a way to stop him.
- 7:02Speaker 2: If I do that, that's on you. You know. I
- 7:05Speaker 2: don't know if Jeff's going to be that hands off.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I think at least early on he will be. But
- 7:10Speaker 2: Zach has made it very clear too that look, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 2: we'll call the plays. We'll get you in the best
- 7:16Speaker 2: position defensively we can. But if coach says this is
- 7:19Speaker 2: what he wants or this is his idea, it's his program,
- 7:22Speaker 2: that's what we're going to do. So I think they've
- 7:25Speaker 2: got a really clear understanding. But Zach and Matt Brock
- 7:28Speaker 2: fit the culture of this place, Craig about as well
- 7:32Speaker 2: as anyone. I mean, they are blue collar, hardworking. Both
- 7:38Speaker 2: of them have earned everything that they They've been able
- 7:41Speaker 2: to get in life, and I think that's something that
- 7:44Speaker 2: in this program has kind of always been the case.
- 7:46Speaker 2: You know, whether it's players coaches, they've all had to
- 7:49Speaker 2: have that blue collar kind of edge to him. And
- 7:51Speaker 2: those two guys fit this place really really well.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Mississippi's take play by play voice Neil Price, joining us
- 7:56Speaker 1: here in our SEC previews here on sports Radio AM
- 7:58Speaker 1: thirteen hundred zone. All Right, some of the players in
- 8:00Speaker 1: a good place to start, always says at quarterback, and
- 8:03Speaker 1: I know the Blake shape and adventure when up and
- 8:06Speaker 1: down in the injuries were a big part of that.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But now is it safe to say this offense is
- 8:12Speaker 1: in the hands of Camaro Taylor?
- 8:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I think so. And you know, I'm not
- 8:18Speaker 2: trying to heap on too much with regard to expectation
- 8:22Speaker 2: on a guy who's a sophomore, but I think he
- 8:27Speaker 2: is a generational type talent. I do. They've had guys
- 8:32Speaker 2: play quarterback here in my ten years that have been
- 8:36Speaker 2: exceptional runners but have not been accurate passers. They've had
- 8:41Speaker 2: some guys that have been very accurate passers, but not
- 8:45Speaker 2: the most mobile when it comes to trying to extend
- 8:48Speaker 2: plays or get out of trouble. Camaro Taylor is a
- 8:52Speaker 2: guy who is an exceptional thrower who just happens to
- 8:56Speaker 2: be able to run at an elite level mall sample sized.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Last year, we saw him do things that you just
- 9:03Speaker 2: sit back and go wow, you know, I mean, weave
- 9:06Speaker 2: his way through defenses, bring the team back in spots
- 9:09Speaker 2: and sec games where especially at Arkansas where it wasn't
- 9:12Speaker 2: looking great, look like State had lost all the momentum
- 9:15Speaker 2: and blake shape and got banged up, and Tomrio goes
- 9:17Speaker 2: in the game and suddenly he takes him down the
- 9:18Speaker 2: field and scores and he's a true freshman and you're going, wow,
- 9:23Speaker 2: that's not common. I think the key for his success though,
- 9:27Speaker 2: is that they've got to have an offensive line it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: capable of protecting him. And what we saw at times
- 9:32Speaker 2: last year, especially on the left side of that offensive line,
- 9:35Speaker 2: was that it wasn't consistent. So that's where they've got
- 9:39Speaker 2: to take a big step. Is that group's got to
- 9:41Speaker 2: be better. Give him time to make the throws, but
- 9:45Speaker 2: also keep him up right and give him a chance
- 9:47Speaker 2: to extend plays and use all that talent. He's got
- 9:50Speaker 2: to give this team a chance.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Well, that's a great point. And we always talk about
- 9:55Speaker 1: the offensive line, you know, being so important. Is a
- 9:59Speaker 1: guy like Camp being a guy who has to kind
- 10:01Speaker 1: of lead the charge there as well as some of
- 10:03Speaker 1: the younger guys there to step up and make sure
- 10:05Speaker 1: this whole line can keep Camaro Taylor upright.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think Canon to I think Cannon did
- 10:12Speaker 2: a good job of trying to be the leader. A
- 10:14Speaker 2: year ago. They just had so many injuries and you know,
- 10:18Speaker 2: they had to revolve indoor. By the end of the year,
- 10:21Speaker 2: they're down to seven guys and you're bringing a defensive
- 10:24Speaker 2: guy over trying to plug some holes there with regards
- 10:27Speaker 2: to depth on that offensive line. So they need people
- 10:30Speaker 2: to be healthy, they need a good leader like Cannon Boom,
- 10:33Speaker 2: and they just need to be consistent do the very
- 10:36Speaker 2: basic things every day to because they've got great skill people.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But you can have the greatest skill players in the world.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Barry Sanders is the great exception. You know, he played
- 10:47Speaker 2: for bad teams you're in and you're out in the NFL,
- 10:50Speaker 2: yet somehow found a way to get his yards and
- 10:52Speaker 2: overcome bad situation. It's hard to do that in college football.
- 10:57Speaker 2: It just is. So you've got to have a group
- 10:58Speaker 2: of guys upfront that can be assistant and give those
- 11:00Speaker 2: skill guys a chance to be dynamic.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I want to ask you about a couple of offensive attorneys
- 11:05Speaker 1: who I saw with my own eyes in that epic
- 11:09Speaker 1: game in Starfield between Texas and Mississippi State last year,
- 11:14Speaker 1: that overtime special and that is Fluff Bothwell, who came
- 11:19Speaker 1: in last year and he made an impact in that game.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And then you have a veteran receiver in Anthony Evans
- 11:24Speaker 1: returning as well, and I remember those two guys specifically.
- 11:27Speaker 1: How important will those two guys be in terms of
- 11:31Speaker 1: being able to direct the offense to be very productive?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Well, huge, because I think the ball is going to
- 11:38Speaker 2: go through both of them a lot. You know, So
- 11:41Speaker 2: without Brendan Thompson now who's moved on to the NFL,
- 11:44Speaker 2: Anthony Evans has to be your number one receiver and
- 11:48Speaker 2: then who emerges as that two guy behind him. Well,
- 11:51Speaker 2: that's what camp's for right now, and it's something that's
- 11:54Speaker 2: going to you know, play out, I think over the
- 11:56Speaker 2: first two or three games of the year. Because you
- 11:59Speaker 2: had you that one A and one B with Brennan
- 12:02Speaker 2: and Anthony Evans last year. Now, you know, you got
- 12:05Speaker 2: Anthony Evans, but you don't really know who's going to
- 12:07Speaker 2: step up and be the guy with him, or who
- 12:09Speaker 2: that third guy even is going to be with him there,
- 12:12Speaker 2: So in the passing game, he's going to be huge.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Fluff is a guy that you know, I was even
- 12:17Speaker 2: a little surprised at how quick he was able to
- 12:21Speaker 2: make the adjustment, and that says a lot about his talent.
- 12:25Speaker 2: It says a lot about his maturity level that he
- 12:27Speaker 2: was able to come in and make the impact he
- 12:29Speaker 2: did a year ago, and he was splitting carries a
- 12:32Speaker 2: lot of the year, and I think this year he's
- 12:34Speaker 2: kind of your bell cow guy when it comes to
- 12:36Speaker 2: carrying the ball, so he's durable. What I like about
- 12:41Speaker 2: him is that he was not the fastest guy on
- 12:44Speaker 2: the team a year ago, but certainly he was capable
- 12:46Speaker 2: of being a physical runner with a fair amount of speed.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And he's a guy who catches the ball well out
- 12:53Speaker 2: of the backfield, so you can use him in a
- 12:55Speaker 2: lot of different ways. So in terms of the skilled
- 12:57Speaker 2: people after Camaro Taylor, yeah, you're right on it. Those
- 13:00Speaker 2: two guys are going to be the two impact guys
- 13:03Speaker 2: on this team.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Neil probably has been said to stay played by play voice,
- 13:06Speaker 1: join us for a few more minutes. Let me jump
- 13:07Speaker 1: to the defense. And I know that with the influx
- 13:11Speaker 1: also of what he was doing with the coaching staff,
- 13:13Speaker 1: coach Levy felt like he had to get some guys
- 13:15Speaker 1: in there, some playmakers, didn't he, especially on the defensive front.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You've got some transfers coming in. How do you see
- 13:21Speaker 1: that shaking down right now?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Well, I think Camp's gonna have a lot to do
- 13:25Speaker 2: with it. The guy they got back that I think
- 13:28Speaker 2: can make the biggest impact, who is sort of still
- 13:31Speaker 2: a newcomer I guess, considering only played in two and
- 13:34Speaker 2: a half games a year ago, is Will Whitson. They
- 13:36Speaker 2: brought him over from Coastal Carolina before last season. He
- 13:40Speaker 2: was really good in a small sample size, but unfortunately
- 13:44Speaker 2: it's been a trend in his career. Places he's been,
- 13:47Speaker 2: he's had problems with injuries. You know, half a year's
- 13:50Speaker 2: kind of been what he's been able to do. They
- 13:51Speaker 2: hope they can get a whole year out of him
- 13:53Speaker 2: this year. And if you can take the numbers he
- 13:55Speaker 2: gave you in two and a half games last year
- 13:57Speaker 2: and extrapolate those out over twelve and you think you've
- 14:00Speaker 2: got a really good rush in there who can be
- 14:03Speaker 2: a difference maker. I think he's going to be the
- 14:06Speaker 2: guy who has to anchor him up front, and then
- 14:08Speaker 2: you need the rest of that group to come along
- 14:10Speaker 2: and create some pressure because I do think they've got
- 14:13Speaker 2: some good cover guys. Kelly Jones is going to be
- 14:15Speaker 2: an NFL cornerback one day. They like Jet Jefferson. He's
- 14:19Speaker 2: still a young guy who got banged up, only played
- 14:22Speaker 2: four games last year, but they like what he can
- 14:24Speaker 2: do as a cover guy in the secondary. So I
- 14:27Speaker 2: think they have some pieces to be good on defense,
- 14:30Speaker 2: and I think they'll be different defensively this year because Backgard,
- 14:33Speaker 2: that's a guy who comes off that Joe Lee, Duntree,
- 14:36Speaker 2: Rocky Long not scared to get out there and blitz,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and he may send sticks, he may send eight, he
- 14:44Speaker 2: may send ten. You just don't know. You know, it
- 14:47Speaker 2: comes from all directions. So it's a fun defense to
- 14:50Speaker 2: be a part of. And they just got to find
- 14:51Speaker 2: guys who want to get out there and play and
- 14:53Speaker 2: give them a chance to build some step before.
- 14:56Speaker 1: We get done. Neil, I want to ask you. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: always ask my fellow SEC play by play brethren about
- 15:02Speaker 1: their schedules coming up, and there's some that have some
- 15:05Speaker 1: easier rides early on than some others. I look at
- 15:09Speaker 1: your schedule and to say, okay, there's definitely a way
- 15:12Speaker 1: to start at home a winnable non conference game against
- 15:16Speaker 1: Uel Monroe, and then it looks like it's quite a
- 15:18Speaker 1: challenge having to travel up the Big Ten country to
- 15:21Speaker 1: play Minnesota, and it's back to back road games because
- 15:23Speaker 1: then the open SEC play the next week again South
- 15:26Speaker 1: Carolina on the road, and you've got South Carolina, Missouri,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and then Alabama at home before you even get a
- 15:31Speaker 1: chance catch breath. Then you've got road games the Baton Rouge.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You come here to Austin sandwiched around a homecoming game
- 15:37Speaker 1: against Oklahoma, and then obviously we'd never want to leave
- 15:41Speaker 1: out the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving weekend. How do you
- 15:43Speaker 1: see the important elements of this schedule playing out for
- 15:47Speaker 1: the Bulldogs?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Well, first of all, what else is new? Jan That's
- 15:52Speaker 2: just kind of yeah, that's just kind of the way
- 15:54Speaker 2: it is. I got to ask a similar question the
- 15:56Speaker 2: other day, and I said, remember, Mississippi State was in
- 15:59Speaker 2: the SEC West when divisions were still a thing, and
- 16:03Speaker 2: they always ended the year with some combination of some
- 16:09Speaker 2: combination of Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss. Alabama was usually in
- 16:15Speaker 2: there somewhere in that final month too, So it's just
- 16:19Speaker 2: part of it. I mean, it just is and and
- 16:21Speaker 2: the reality is you and I understand how tough it is.
- 16:24Speaker 2: The coaches understand how tough it is. I think fans
- 16:27Speaker 2: when they watch it, they just want you to go win.
- 16:29Speaker 2: They don't really care who you play. I think they
- 16:32Speaker 2: have to find a way to stay healthy against that
- 16:34Speaker 2: that middle third of that schedule that starts. I mean,
- 16:38Speaker 2: you talked about the front end. There's nothing easy about that,
- 16:41Speaker 2: But when you're talking about that stretch that starts with Alabama,
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think there's a bye week ind there after that,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and then you've got LSU. Remind Texas and remind me
- 16:51Speaker 2: of the fourth one.
- 16:53Speaker 1: At LSU, then Oklahoma at home, then as Access and

- 17:09Speaker 2: stay healthy because we all know that's why depth is
- 17:12Speaker 2: so important in the SEC is you're going to hit
- 17:14Speaker 2: stretches where guys are going to get banged up because
- 17:16Speaker 2: of the physical demand of playing a schedule like that,
- 17:19Speaker 2: So they just got to find a way to stay
- 17:21Speaker 2: healthy and get through it. And you know, take advantage
- 17:24Speaker 2: of your opportunities at home as best as you can
- 17:26Speaker 2: and go on the road and see if you can
- 17:28Speaker 2: scare somebody. I mean, that's just kind of what you
- 17:30Speaker 2: have to do in this week.
- 17:32Speaker 1: He is the outstanding play by play voice of the

- 17:48Speaker 2: Appreciate it. Yeah, Craig, always good to talk to you.
