- 0:22None. Hamster with a blunt penknife
- 0:35for doing quicker. Quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 0:45I knew the commentary for Part 6 of Hamster of the Planet of the
- 0:49Spiders for hamster with a blunt penknife.
- 0:52Hello, I'm Psy and I once had a phone call from the Great One.
- 0:56Would you believe? I couldn't believe it.
- 0:58There I was in my kitchen, phone rang and the Great One had
- 1:03phoned to call me up to say that her brain was expanding and that
- 1:07was it. And then the phone went dead and
- 1:09then my boyfriend rang up slightly after that.
- 1:13Whether the two were connected I will never know, but this was at
- 1:16the time when I was getting letters from the macro and from
- 1:19ORAC, so you. Know a very.
- 1:22Interesting time and I thought. You were saying?
- 1:25That Maureen Morris phoned you up.
- 1:27I don't. Know.
- 1:28Randomly left that message. No, this is Dan Hogarth.
- 1:31Right. OK, I get it.
- 1:34I knew. Something welcome back to A
- 1:37Hamster with a Blood Penknife, the Doctor Who commentary
- 1:39podcast where we are about to finish off an era eight months
- 1:45after we started. Before we do that, though, you
- 1:48can't just leave us hanging there.
- 1:49What did Orac see in his letter? Oh, he swore a lot.
- 1:55There. Was a cartoon of him saying piss
- 1:59flaps. He also detailed in, you know in
- 2:04a great detail as well, a map that would lead you to fight
- 2:08discovery, which consisted of two corridors.
- 2:15Was it done in? Felt pen it pretty well was.
- 2:20Yeah. But fortunately at that point,
- 2:21the best Travis was still around.
- 2:23So we were in good shape. So yes, here we are at the end.
- 2:31It's been a long time getting from there to here.
- 2:36It has been eight months and most we six parties feel like
- 2:42they last eight months, this one actually.
- 2:45Has the only two commentaries that have had a gap this long.
- 2:49Even our web planet wasn't this long.
- 2:52No it. Wasn't, and the only other one
- 2:53was another six part colony in space where I've done 3 episodes
- 2:59and I still haven't finished it. And that was recorded a year and
- 3:02a half ago. Oh my God.
- 3:05He goes, oh don't worry, we'll do something else.
- 3:09We're so bored by it, I'm sure. Climactic end of Jon Pertwee,
- 3:15gentlemen. Yes.
- 3:16So five years our longest running doctor.
- 3:19At this point, children wouldn't have, maybe not even known, a
- 3:24different doctor. Ratings were soaring.
- 3:26He was very popular. And this is it.
- 3:31A whole generation are going to be scarred by this doctor
- 3:34leaving. How much do you buy into
- 3:37Pertwee? Going in to see the head of
- 3:39drama asking for a pay rise because Barry Letts says that's
- 3:43bullshit. I think it's a great story that
- 3:47Pertwee could spin. Pertwee is a master of a great
- 3:51story, and if he could rinse an anecdote out of something, he
- 3:55would do because he's a he's a professional.
- 3:58He knows that people are going to ask him about this, so he's
- 4:02not just going to say, oh, I just decided to leave because
- 4:05that's not dramatic enough. So he's going to spin a big yarn
- 4:09about it, isn't he? Is this the era of The
- 4:11Raconteurs? Because you've got a PERT where
- 4:14you can spin a yarn, tear and sticks you can spin yarn.
- 4:17Katie Manning can certainly spin a yarn.
- 4:20Yeah, well, these are all, and I think they all come, they all
- 4:25get this from Pertwin, who is the master of doing this because
- 4:29they've probably been regaled by five years of perk.
- 4:32We's Tall Tales. Trouble is, so right on these
- 4:34commentaries, it's so embarrassing because you've got
- 4:36Barry let's there, the man of Ultimate integrity pointing out
- 4:40when everyone's talking bullshit you.
- 4:43Having none of. It Are you sure?
- 4:46He says Kate Manning and Planet. Are you sure?
- 4:50Because I've seen to remember it was.
- 4:51This, and she sort of laughs really awkwardly and goes no,
- 4:54no, no, I think it was that and it was going, yeah, all right, I
- 4:59love Barry Letts. I love his, yeah, He just isn't
- 5:03having any of it. He's just there to debunk all
- 5:06these stories and say no, no, no.
- 5:07If John wanted a rise, he would have come to me and I would have
- 5:10decided out of my budget. Because I was the producer, I
- 5:13could decide this. I've got a big question for both
- 5:16of you then that I'd like you to answer.
- 5:18And we'll start with Fraser because he's been very quiet for
- 5:20the first couple of minutes. Is this the point where this
- 5:26team should have disbanded? Was there more?
- 5:31Could they have done more with the 3rd Doctor and Sarah?
- 5:33Could Barry and Terrence have gone on to do more great work,
- 5:37or was this a good time to get off?
- 5:40This is a good time to get off, I think.
- 5:42I mean, could Barry and Terrence do more?
- 5:46Absolutely. Yes.
- 5:49Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:51Barry, let's talk in the making of of this.
- 5:52And he says, you know we we were just kind of running out of
- 5:56ideas but but you know we didn't realize that we were you know
- 6:01another production team would have had these scripts pitched
- 6:03to them and would have done something with them.
- 6:05We would say no, no, we've done that.
- 6:06We've done that. We've done that.
- 6:08It's getting kind of same as. So I think they could have just
- 6:13went on and on you know doing what they could be doing perk
- 6:17way. You know he could probably have
- 6:21went on longer as well. You know what you've got to
- 6:23think is, you know, without Katie Manning and without Roger
- 6:27Delgado, is it going to be the same?
- 6:29And yeah, probably not and all. You're a Russian part where the
- 6:34arc in space. Well that's that's the other
- 6:37question is you know, you know obviously Katie's left already.
- 6:42He wanted our God has passed away.
- 6:43Unfortunately Barry and Terrence have decided they're moving on.
- 6:53If you believe the Jon Pertwee tail that you went and asked for
- 6:56a big reason, they said no. So he left you know amount.
- 6:59You know the the what if is what if they said, Oh yeah cool,
- 7:03yeah, there you go. There's an extra 20% and he's
- 7:06kind of Lombard with with season 12, What would Jon Pertwee look
- 7:12like in a Hinchcliffe and Holmes era?
- 7:18It's fascinating, isn't it? Because we don't get this
- 7:21terribly often at this point. Everything has been so stable
- 7:27behind the scenes and I can understand completely that we
- 7:33deciding to go because Barry and Terence were going absolutely
- 7:37makes makes sense because he's someone who very much needs his
- 7:44comfort team behind him. And I think he would have.
- 7:48It would have been fascinated to see him with Hinchcliffe because
- 7:52he would have been a bit on the back foot and he might have had
- 7:55to to do things that his Doctor hadn't done before, which would
- 8:01have been been fascinated. Would have been really
- 8:03interesting to see where they took the 3rd Doctor.
- 8:06In the same way, people often say, what if Steven Moffat had
- 8:10had David Tennant for his first year and that difference, or
- 8:14Chris Chipnall had had Peter Capaldi for a year, you know?
- 8:18Going into camp now. Exactly.
- 8:21All of those what ifs. You just don't know what.
- 8:23What would have happened. I mean, I think this is probably
- 8:26the time to go, but interestingly, Terence is the
- 8:31one who says I actually didn't want to leave, he said.
- 8:35But I felt like I had to, because I might appear as
- 8:39yesterday's man with someone with a new producer, and you
- 8:44don't want to be the one who's sort of left behind.
- 8:47I don't think Hinchcliffe would have objected, though I think
- 8:51Hinchcliffe would have worked with Terrance Dicks.
- 8:53Because Terrance is so resolutely professional and so
- 8:57good at his job. And so much of the this era
- 9:01works because Terrance has worked damn hard to make sure
- 9:04the scripts work and are watertight.
- 9:08Yeah, I think, I think obviously the but this the main success
- 9:12for me of the of both eras of both the the 3rd Doctor and the
- 9:20the 4th Doctor, you know 12/13/14 Hinchcliffe is how much
- 9:27on the same page Barry less than 10 sticks were and how much
- 9:32Philip Hinchcliffe and Bob Holmes were on the same page.
- 9:34They are making this show together.
- 9:36They are not. You know, we come to Eric
- 9:38Saywood and John Nathan Turner and they are making different
- 9:41shows. You know, say we'll just try to
- 9:46write and script, edit a drama, whereas GNT is making light
- 9:52entertainment, you know, Hinchcliff and Holmes are both
- 9:56making drama. Let's and Dicks are both making
- 9:59light entertainment. You know, they are working,
- 10:03working together. So to put Terrence Dicks with
- 10:06with Hinchcliffe and say well, you know, that would be a bit of
- 10:10a clash of styles. Yes, 10 sticks would have been
- 10:13utterly professional and you know, have done the best.
- 10:16But would it have been as successful as having someone
- 10:19totally sympatical? Because his his sensibilities
- 10:22are slightly different to Robert Holmes.
- 10:25Yeah. But I do.
- 10:26You know what? I think his stories will be a
- 10:28lot plotted a lot tighter than those.
- 10:32Stories. Great endings.
- 10:33Yeah, because the the hedge clave homes endings are
- 10:36generally pretty bad. But you know, you're trading
- 10:41off. I mean, you know, Bob Holmes is
- 10:44is the master of the witty dialogue and the the world
- 10:47building and the, you know, the character.
- 10:51Eccentric characters, yeah. Yeah.
- 10:55So you kind of lose that as well.
- 10:57So the the tarsus for courses. I mean, both eras are totally
- 11:02magnificent, but in their own special way.
- 11:06I do think it's time to leave UNIT and Earth behind and do
- 11:12something different. We've had five years of coming
- 11:16back to this and actually you do need to keep the show fresh and
- 11:21I don't think they would have divorced Pertwee from UNIT ever.
- 11:26And that's that's The funny thing.
- 11:28I mean, let's and Dicks decided within the first series, within
- 11:33season seven that decided that didn't and want the Doctor to be
- 11:36Earthbound. And it takes them five years.
- 11:40It takes them three years to get the the ability to fly his own
- 11:44TARDIS back, and you just kind of wonder why, why it took them
- 11:48so long. Well, I like that, though.
- 11:49I like how it's staggered, how it's not easy because then when
- 11:52that moment hits in the three doctors, it means something.
- 11:56Yeah, it's it's earned. You've We've been the long way
- 11:59around to get there. And then you get Carnival of
- 12:02Monsters and it feels so fresh. Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:05They're, they're it's like they're let out and and off they
- 12:09go. The weird thing is, is we're
- 12:11talking about her. We potentially being in stories
- 12:14like Arcade Space and Genesis of the Daleks.
- 12:18I actually think, and I do really like Roblox.
- 12:20I think it's a witty script. She's got funny character.
- 12:23Sarah Jane gets a great role, but Tom Baker just feels so
- 12:26weird in that setting. Yes, with those characters.
- 12:31But that's what that's what the story is setting out to do.
- 12:35It is setting out a new Doctor who isn't going to have the same
- 12:40relationship with UNIT as as the old Doctor did.
- 12:45And Tom is playing every scene in the Anti.
- 12:49Pert we weigh, he's thinking, what would Pert we do?
- 12:52Well then I'm just going to lie on this bench because Pert, we
- 12:55wouldn't do that. I'm going to sit with my feet up
- 12:58in the Jeep because he wouldn't do that.
- 12:59All of those things. He's taking the piss in the most
- 13:03spectacular way, isn't he? Yeah, yeah.
- 13:06And that is kind of what works about it, that is really.
- 13:09Charring, but it, yeah. And I think it works because Tom
- 13:13is coming in with so much energy, whereas it would be just
- 13:16another unit story if Perlby was there and it'd just be another
- 13:21season opener. That and we've done all of this.
- 13:24We did enough, I think. Had Perlwe gone out on Robot,
- 13:28which is sort of action adventure, that wouldn't have
- 13:31felt as satisfying as this, which is more of a character
- 13:36drama, it's it's a bit more thoughtful than that.
- 13:39The pace is a bit more measured. I don't know.
- 13:42It feels like a sensitive way to bow out, especially this
- 13:45episode. But I think this this story is
- 13:48geared to exit her way. Yes, it's well, that's that's
- 13:53his main. That's his main.
- 13:55Yeah, it's his main reason for being.
- 13:58Absolutely. I mean if you take, you know,
- 14:02the doctor leaving at the end of it out of this story, if you
- 14:05move this story to second in the season or third or whatever,
- 14:10it's, you know, we wouldn't have nearly as much we love and
- 14:15affection for it as we do. You're right.
- 14:17You know, robot works like you say, because it is the new
- 14:22Doctor in the old doctor's shoes.
- 14:24You know, it's saying this is, this is the exact story that you
- 14:27used to. It's a very one of the mill
- 14:29story. But what elevates it is having
- 14:31that new Doctor in it. You know what I say this is this
- 14:34is someone doing different. This is how different things are
- 14:37going to be now. And we're using the all to
- 14:40juxtapose the new and make it that contrast between Tom Baker
- 14:44and Jon Pertwee. Absolutely Crystal, clearly.
- 14:47So that's why that works. And.
- 14:50That point about about being in the middle of the season, We
- 14:53wouldn't be forgiving of that chase in episode 2 because that
- 14:57would feel indulgent, but because it's his last hurrah, we
- 15:00go, let's let him have it. We would.
- 15:02We wouldn't be as we wouldn't be as forgiving as the best feeling
- 15:05is free. But Temple is free sequences
- 15:08because in this we know this, this grand finale is coming.
- 15:12So you sort of sit, you ride it, you know, Whereas if it was like
- 15:15like monster a pedagogy, you just go, oh God, what is this?
- 15:19Just get on with it. Yeah.
- 15:20What? Are you going to say someone was
- 15:23going to say something then I was?
- 15:24Going to say should we get on with it?
- 15:26Yes, let's go with it. I was going to say we were quite
- 15:30forgiving of the big chase that takes up episode 5 of Invasion
- 15:34of the Dinosaurs. I mean that's I think, I think I
- 15:38would be quite forgiven of this chase, you know, if it came, you
- 15:43know in you know third story, I think the chase is the chase,
- 15:47it's the chase, it's just, it's just great daft, glorious fun
- 15:51regardless of whether it's in this story or another one.
- 15:54So. What I will say is, I think
- 15:56episode 6 of Planet of the Spiders has some of the most
- 16:00startling character moments in this entire era where the Doctor
- 16:04talks about his greed, certainly his death, and it is a death.
- 16:09Yeah, and they're character moments for the Doctor, which we
- 16:12don't. Often get it's development for
- 16:15the Doctor, which we don't often get.
- 16:17Well, let's we watch it. Yes.
- 16:19What? Not OK.
- 16:21Well, let's give it another. OK. 54321 Let's go one last time
- 16:32for those other I'd love those Spears of light.
- 16:35That's gorgeous. Imagine if that terrible
- 16:39Delaware theme was being used so terrible.
- 16:49The. Funk.
- 16:52Mind you, it's not too dissimilar from the Colin Baker
- 16:54trial theme, is it? It's not in places.
- 16:59The reprise is completely different.
- 17:01What's going on? I have no idea.
- 17:05It's it's the same so far. Don't we talk about Simon?
- 17:07Look, there's. Unbelievable that we've cut back
- 17:1010 minutes. It's it's it's, you know, it's
- 17:14just the back end, the back quarter of Episode 5.
- 17:20Never before have we seen a a show in such time crisis that
- 17:24we've had to play the last 10 minutes again.
- 17:29Megalos says Hold my beer, but. Doesn't it cut out some scenes?
- 17:33It cuts out some scenes as well. It's very weird.
- 17:37Yeah, because because they borrowed them from the next
- 17:40episode for like 3 episodes. Now get to like the last episode
- 17:43of Bubble can't borrow from episode seven.
- 17:45There isn't one. So we're just going to have to
- 17:47put some new stuff in. Oh fabulous.
- 17:52So I mean, the Cliffhanger Episode 5 should be the bit
- 17:55where the realized server's got the spider on her back.
- 17:56Yes, but. Absolutely.
- 17:58There's just not enough else. Is that what it was going to be?
- 18:01It should be. That would be.
- 18:03Great. I think it's.
- 18:05I don't know if it was what was planned, but that's the obvious
- 18:08cliffhanger. Feels like it, doesn't it?
- 18:10Yeah. But you know it's.
- 18:11Just not enough in six to where? Where she says where she's got
- 18:17the spider on her back and she says that she's brightened.
- 18:19She plays that for real. She is.
- 18:22That's why she was a terrible rocket of four.
- 18:26Oh, you're not. Going to talk about those
- 18:30rehearsal scenes, are you? Put these little toys bring up
- 18:34to bring in slightly bigger toy spiders every day, because
- 18:36otherwise she would have just absolutely not been able to do
- 18:40the scene with the spider on her back.
- 18:42That which is what he. Says saying, yeah, if I, yeah,
- 18:46she said. I wouldn't have been very
- 18:47professional as an actress doing.
- 18:49That she goes, I'm bloody acting.
- 18:50She says in the commentary. I'm all right with a fake
- 18:53spider, John, Like, oh, look, there's Fraser, that's.
- 18:58Me, that's. Got me.
- 19:00That's got me right. So I've got to say though,
- 19:02you're way prettier than Orum there.
- 19:06Got a better? Heck, and he's got terrible
- 19:08teeth as we've got big gap in his teeth.
- 19:10Yeah, 70s teeth, 70s hair, 70s specs, 70s total neck.
- 19:14Oh man, you're retro. You are vintage.
- 19:17Give another 50 years and you know they'll be there.
- 19:21Then 2074 version of me. The Fraser Gregory look.
- 19:30Good day. I look what I found on YouTube.
- 19:32What's YouTube? That's what old people used to
- 19:34watch. Look what I found.
- 19:36That person looks exactly like me.
- 19:37That says stop it all the time. Look at Look at how that's
- 19:40directed with Sarah in the foreground there.
- 19:43I was just thinking that I've not.
- 19:45I don't know if it's because I'm so up close to to the screen for
- 19:49this, but I've never noticed that before that she's
- 19:52foregrounded. And she's acting.
- 19:54Brilliantly. And the Doctor is throwing her
- 19:57looks as well, so he knows. Maybe he was paying attention
- 20:03last week. Yeah.
- 20:05It's interesting as well when? We go she's she's doing that so
- 20:10brilliantly. I must give it to me.
- 20:13Seize it. What's come over you?
- 20:14What's going on is. It and that feels that feels
- 20:18big. Sarah James shooting the Doctor.
- 20:20That's that's your cliffhanger. Yeah, what a shame.
- 20:26Just have a Just have a longer episode and a shorter episode,
- 20:29for God's sakes. And this magical bit where he
- 20:31says see through my eyes and the spider appears.
- 20:35Oh, great. And he goes, What a.
- 20:36Good. Grief.
- 20:38That we're so good at a good grief.
- 20:41And here's the cliffhanger. Hasn't someone done a super cut
- 20:44of all the good? Griefs.
- 20:45Yeah, it's on YouTube. It's.
- 20:46Greatly done a good, I think. It's about 5 1/2 hours long, are
- 20:53they? It's up there with Tom's What?
- 20:56There's a supercar of his what? Good grief.
- 21:00There up. Just below all of the Packers in
- 21:03the Invasion. Oh, Packer.
- 21:06Someone saw that as well and I swear, and there's definitely a
- 21:09Benny supercar. For a more than 55.
- 21:15Yeah, look, here we are now in the cliffhanger.
- 21:17It's very odd. I feel like someone's put
- 21:21together a jigsaw in the wrong order.
- 21:24But I think this is probably the right order and the last episode
- 21:27was the wrong. Thing is, what the fact would we
- 21:29know if we were watching this on original transmission?
- 21:31You wouldn't even. Wouldn't have remembered that
- 21:33book. You'd just be watching this so
- 21:35you know you. It's worth remembering always
- 21:37that they these were not meant to be binge watch no as a whole.
- 21:44You'd remember Tommy kicking that fellow up the ass?
- 21:47Yeah, God, they do shoot. Like, look at her eyes.
- 21:55Yeah, I think that's right. I wish that spider on our back
- 21:56twitch though. Yeah, somehow it looks even
- 22:00worse when that bugs on Donald's back and turn left.
- 22:04Well, that's your modern, modern day comparison, isn't it?
- 22:11But actually, Donna plays those scenes absolutely terrified as
- 22:15well, doesn't she? It's where we were.
- 22:18We've been lucky with the actresses.
- 22:20They've scored. This lady, now she is acting her
- 22:25socks off. Well, and she has to sort of go
- 22:29between being the spider and being Sarah.
- 22:31Oh, look what else. We're mesmerized by it.
- 22:39Well, yeah. I can't even hear it.
- 22:41Can you hear it? No, no.
- 22:43And she's writing close up and then we go that that line.
- 22:46I'm frightened. Of course, Fraser, it's worth
- 22:52remembering this is the period where, Sigh, Hart hated Sarah
- 22:55Jane the entire classic run. Those days are gone.
- 23:03Did you not love the way those spider legs all came up there?
- 23:05Like the flower? Can we dispose of these boring
- 23:11characters now, please? I think we're nearly done with
- 23:14them. Oh.
- 23:14Thank goodness. No, they've got the.
- 23:17Oh, they're going to make a circle, yeah.
- 23:20Unfortunately the trade off is you get these wonderful scenes
- 23:24where he's talking about his greed for knowledge, which is
- 23:27great, and where he realises who Campo is.
- 23:31Yeah, but the trade off is we don't have enough time to give
- 23:36to the Mesabilia scenes. So we go back and very quickly
- 23:40they've all been taken over and then that's dealt with in about
- 23:432 1/2 seconds. But the annoying thing is, is we
- 23:46do have the time. We've done that.
- 23:48That's. The frustrating thing is, if you
- 23:51cut a little bit of padding from further down in the Domino Rally
- 23:56and then have Will Cliffhanger where it should have been,
- 23:58you've now you could give yourself two or three more more
- 24:02scenes in metabolis with spiders and what his face Not, not, not
- 24:10Blake. No.
- 24:12Gareth Chewar. Chewar.
- 24:15Chewar. Raffarlis.
- 24:16Yeah. The an.
- 24:18Arak. I want to say Gareth Thomas, but
- 24:20it's not, it's. It's Gareth Hunt.
- 24:22That's him, that's him. You know you could you could do
- 24:27something proper with that because you know the runaway and
- 24:29it's it's it's almost you don't need to go back to Metabolis
- 24:33because that's that feels very much wrapped up that feels
- 24:36wrapped up in a very Doctor Who sort of way or just.
- 24:38Back to the caves. Just.
- 24:40Sort of. You've had your revolution.
- 24:42Awesome. Thank you very much.
- 24:43We're going off now. You look after yourselves.
- 24:46Everything will be fine. It feels, you know, that's
- 24:48that's classic Doctor Who. But for once, I'll take the
- 24:51trade off because these scenes are great and.
- 24:54Extra. Scenes on Metabilia 3 would not
- 24:56be great. And this scene where the doctors
- 24:59suddenly realized it's his guru. Tabara Tardis.
- 25:04Sigh. Was naughty to say the least.
- 25:09Borrow day. And it's lovely.
- 25:12It's really, yeah. It's just really lovely and full
- 25:14of warmth. Isn't that the first use of
- 25:16regenerated as well? Yeah.
- 25:18Yeah, I regenerated and came to Earth.
- 25:20Yeah. Barry Letts was a trendsetter,
- 25:22wasn't he? We'll make, we'll make it
- 25:26something else for the first time, hearing this one that has
- 25:31just come up recently. Oh yeah, A bi generation.
- 25:35Yes. It's not a BI generation in
- 25:38this, is there? Well, because you've got Choji,
- 25:40who's the projection of the of Campo, who's there in the same
- 25:46way as Lagopoulos has got the Watcher who is the future
- 25:53doctor. Yeah, I never thought about
- 25:56that. That's that's.
- 26:00Who's it? Still in it?
- 26:01Oh, there he is. Yeah, so like.
- 26:05The. Only thing now that's really
- 26:07important now is per we yeah, it's the docks of the crystal
- 26:11and the grey one and the dress is just bumped around it.
- 26:14It is. It's not bad.
- 26:17Bump, but it is bad. It could have been better.
- 26:21Like I say, I think if you if you have a bit more solid scenes
- 26:26on you know the metabolists with the with everyone you know you
- 26:31could really do do something better there.
- 26:33If you'd if members you have your revolution in part 6 rather
- 26:37than part five. You know, I think right now
- 26:40we've got the magic stones. Now we're going to go in and do
- 26:42that and not have the sort of kind of fake, fake out of then.
- 26:48Oh yes, we've actually been took over by the spiders and I think
- 26:51that would probably be worked a lot better.
- 26:54I do love the fact that Campo is so is is not scared that he's
- 27:03regenerating, is he? It's like Jodie Whittaker in
- 27:05Power of the Doctor. He's really just resigned to his
- 27:08fate. It's.
- 27:08Going to be all right. Yeah, I like that a lot.
- 27:11And. I like that he sees completely
- 27:13through the doctor. Because really, the drama is the
- 27:17Doctor regenerating, you know? But it reassures the audience by
- 27:22seeing because it hasn't been seen for five years.
- 27:25So you're in the you're reassuring the audience that it
- 27:28will be OK. And look, if this happens to
- 27:32Campo and it's all right, then it when it happens to the
- 27:34doctor, it'll be OK. I.
- 27:36Don't mean it's in any way a negative way, but perk we does
- 27:39look tired as well he. Does look tired and.
- 27:41Old, Yeah, like something happened between recording The
- 27:46Time Warrior and Invasion of the Dinosaur.
- 27:48But when he came back, it was like he.
- 27:51Danced 5 He looks quite yeah. Vicky was having big trouble
- 27:55with his back at this point and was in a lot of pain.
- 28:00But that line he had there where he says I have to go back.
- 28:03Yeah, I have to do it. It's fabulous.
- 28:06Yeah, because he's got a responsibility.
- 28:08Yeah. Because he set all of this in
- 28:11motion. What's great is the thing that's
- 28:13caused all of this is that that hilarious comedy sequence in the
- 28:17Green Death? Yes, with a massive, you know,
- 28:19feet sweeping past. Because he wanted the crystal
- 28:25and it was is great for that. If he hadn't studied art at
- 28:29Saint Martin's College, he wouldn't have a thirst for
- 28:33knowledge. But also, if he hadn't have got
- 28:36his, if he hadn't have got the TARDIS working again at the end
- 28:39of the Three Doctors, he never would have been able to go to
- 28:42Mesopelius 3 and he would have survived.
- 28:45Yeah, and he wired in the coordinates into the programmer
- 28:50in the green deaf, so that he was actually going to get there.
- 28:52So it sets all of this up. Yeah, Yep.
- 28:55It's nice. It's neat.
- 28:56But if. They hadn't planned it, yeah,
- 28:59and I don't think they did. I think it was just luck that
- 29:01all of this came together like this.
- 29:04That's a point, you know. What happened to the giant bird?
- 29:08Were there not, would there not be like the predators of the
- 29:10spiders would they? Would you know as soon as you
- 29:14get? Them with her mind, Uja.
- 29:17I mean, if it's not, as soon as you get like a giant spiders,
- 29:19like a giant bird, not going to. Go imagine that, right?
- 29:22You know it all ends in a big explosion when the Great One
- 29:25goes up. Imagine if the ending was that
- 29:26bird swooping in those big feet. Wow, it was sad last.
- 29:33Year again, you. Couldn't say it wasn't set up
- 29:36the. Previous year though, Good job.
- 29:41Oh, praise for the great ones. I love this, but I love we just
- 29:45swanning in and like having one last you know, I I'm in charge,
- 29:50bitches. Sit down.
- 29:54He's got, he's got to be humble in that sequence with Campo,
- 29:57talking about his greed. He gets to be commanding here,
- 30:00then he gets to be. Terrified and.
- 30:04Then you're getting it all from Pertwee.
- 30:06And then when he died, the the stillness of it as well.
- 30:11It's so moving. I think that's that's one of his
- 30:14best active scenes in the show, rightly so.
- 30:17I love that line. It's You've beaten us, Doctor.
- 30:20It is good that you will die. And he will, and he's no idol
- 30:25fret. He knows this is he knows what's
- 30:28going to happen. There's a good look of disgust
- 30:31on his face there. Yep.
- 30:33And then it's just out of me way.
- 30:35So no, Lupton is going to die soon, isn't he?
- 30:38He does now. Yeah.
- 30:39Is it now? Spoilers.
- 30:43It's a shame, because we did discuss in the first half of
- 30:45this just how effective Lupton was as a sort of yes.
- 30:49But he gets. So sidelined as the story goes
- 30:52on because. He's just put in the corner his.
- 30:55Plot function has finished and there you go, he's done.
- 30:58It's a very Eric Saywood ending for a character.
- 31:03And if if there was a fridge looked at, would be it up.
- 31:06Indeed, But he's no longer in the cellar, Fraser.
- 31:11Well, actually, he might be in the cellar soon.
- 31:14Now he's dead. Lupton has left the cellar.
- 31:21Oh, here we go. Here he goes.
- 31:25Yeah, this really is a good episode.
- 31:28Yeah, it really is. It does.
- 31:30It does come to. I'm not going to say it's a
- 31:31rousing conclusion because it's not like especially dynamic, but
- 31:34it is. But.
- 31:36It is a proper conclusion, yeah. So is this what's going to
- 31:40happen to to shoot you that? Well, then when when the 14th
- 31:46Doctor eventually you know needs to regenerate is is shoot you
- 31:53then going to disappear and reappear wherever?
- 31:57That could be embarrassing. He's like in the middle of
- 31:59something. Yes, please.
- 32:03Oh, I love. How doesn't he wakes?
- 32:05Up and he laughs and he's. You put this in your magazine,
- 32:08Sarah Jane Smith. And she's smiling as well.
- 32:13Here we go. And then per we, yeah.
- 32:16This fucking spider is terrifying.
- 32:19It's the size of a cave, guys. Yes.
- 32:24And Dudley's going crazy with Yeah.
- 32:28Dudley is selling selling it all, isn't he?
- 32:33Yeah. Well, so it's a mixture of the
- 32:35size of it, which I think is very effectively done with him
- 32:38in there too. Yeah, the music and her insane
- 32:41voice, Yeah. And the fact she gets more and
- 32:45more insane and. That's a real model, isn't it?
- 32:48That that the, the crystal above her head and all of that.
- 32:51That was a real mate. Yeah, it's all a model.
- 32:52Yeah, it's basically the same as they're doing in Underworld.
- 32:58It's a model, but because you've got the spider actually in the
- 33:02model, it sells it a bit bit better for for the CSO.
- 33:08I mean, I know we can we can mock how this looks, but I could
- 33:11just imagine being like 6 watching this at the time.
- 33:14Oh yeah. Until.
- 33:18Until. Until.
- 33:20Until. So what is it that goes wrong
- 33:25then? Basically, it's a it's a
- 33:29feedback. So as soon as she puts it in,
- 33:32the power will just keep building up and up and up, and
- 33:34it won't stop, and she's not going to be able to absorb it
- 33:38all. OK, I figured it was her own
- 33:40madness. You know that created.
- 33:44We brings it back down to a circuit.
- 33:46Yeah, yeah. Well, it's simple, man.
- 33:51You will destroy yourself. You waste a little time
- 33:56remaining to you. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 34:01But that is kind of epic, isn't it?
- 34:02A cave of crystals, you know? Absolutely.
- 34:05There's going to be in resonance with her mind.
- 34:08Yeah. And just the size of her is,
- 34:13yeah. The floaty crystal going through
- 34:16the end. I am complete.
- 34:22I bet she's like, look at her enormous abdomen.
- 34:32Honestly, she could. Get nerve to a lot of babies?
- 34:35That's. Good.
- 34:38And you're so painless either. That is the most effective
- 34:41spider we've had, and it's the one.
- 34:43That gets the least amount of screen to us.
- 34:47Yeah, of course he is. Well, it's the Doctor.
- 34:50Oh, is it? I didn't know that.
- 34:56Yeah, look. Great, All powerful me.
- 34:59I really love look at the shadows of the spider on the
- 35:02model and the way that the full is going down on several levels.
- 35:06Yeah, it just sells it, doesn't it?
- 35:09It's terrific. I think Poe looks dreadful.
- 35:13But never mind. Half his head's vanished.
- 35:16Well, that's the problem when you've got bouffon hair.
- 35:18It's a shame they couldn't have just done a bit of location, a
- 35:21little bit of wookie hole here, you know, would have gone a long
- 35:23way. Oh dear, they're in a terrible
- 35:27way, those spiders. And actually, I do think we get
- 35:32a good bang here. Yep.
- 35:34Well, it's probably era ending, isn't it?
- 35:36Where everything explodes. But it's it's a mountain going
- 35:41up, isn't it? Yeah.
- 35:42See, we're doing the epic again. Oh, oh, oh, Oh, well, that's
- 35:52them done. I do wonder where all those 40
- 35:54odd spiders went, because the maggots were given out to
- 35:59people. Richard Franklin.
- 36:00And so did Katy Manning. Oh, here we go.
- 36:04Yeah, it's a good explosion. Slow motion explosions.
- 36:09Close up explosions. I mean, you know, implosion and
- 36:16I love. Then don't you just cut straight
- 36:18to Sarah sniffing his jacket? Yeah, it's a lovely, intimate
- 36:23moment. Just hugging the cloak.
- 36:25Yeah, I'll do that with my mask close.
- 36:29You know when he ain't around sometimes.
- 36:31Yeah, oh. That's the Brig back from Robot.
- 36:39We haven't seen him since episode 2, have we?
- 36:41No, no. It's like I thought I'd pop in
- 36:44at the end just to watch him regenerate, you know?
- 36:47But quite right, too. It's right that he's there.
- 36:53And yeah, you could for almost foresee this as an ending of
- 36:55Doctor Who, where he just doesn't come back and it's the
- 36:57scene between the two of them. Yeah, it could have been.
- 37:00Yeah, I think another reason the Brick comes back.
- 37:04I think Terence wanted him there to witness the regenerations.
- 37:07We didn't have to go through the whole spearhead from space.
- 37:11Oh. It's the.
- 37:12I saw the flag this time. Yeah.
- 37:15I'm wondering if there's a bit of dodgy direction there because
- 37:17she's doing this thing with her eyes as if she can see the
- 37:19TARDIS. Right.
- 37:20Across, but it just materializes.
- 37:23I think it's more than she's sort of hearing the noise and
- 37:26trying to work out where where the noise is coming from.
- 37:30Look at it. He looks oh Terry Walsh one last
- 37:34time. It's no way Perry was full like
- 37:38that is he's like get me Marcus shouldn't.
- 37:41OK. Thank you.
- 37:41He does look ghastly, doesn't he?
- 37:43He does. What's lovely?
- 37:47I love how he tries to comfort her and he dies doing that.
- 37:52And that's his last. His last thing.
- 37:56But I don't do we ever see any other doctor actually expire
- 37:59like this like we you know we we we get the build up in with a
- 38:05lot of doctors. But we don't get the, I mean, I
- 38:10guess it's only Paul McGann, but we're only told that he's dead.
- 38:15And then the camera code is sort of goes in really gently.
- 38:19Yeah, and he's doing that thing where he's touching her cheek,
- 38:22like in Death of the Daleks, that bit that.
- 38:24You love Joe. Yeah, there's no music here as
- 38:28well. There's.
- 38:28It's completely silent, isn't it?
- 38:32Oh God. Look at him, he's act.
- 38:34He's acted his socks off there. He's actually dead.
- 38:38Yeah. Oh, this is funny now though,
- 38:43the fellow beams in. Hello.
- 38:47I'm just going to give it a little push.
- 38:51Oh, she's doing the eye thing again.
- 38:53Yes, yeah. Fraser, do you find this quite
- 38:57moving? Yes, it's good, isn't it?
- 39:01It's. Well, it's because none of it's
- 39:05down to effects. It's all down to performance,
- 39:07yeah. Yes.
- 39:09And it's kind of something that don't really date.
- 39:12And that's the script in as well.
- 39:16And the the acting is is absolutely superb.
- 39:19Liz Laden is obviously selling this.
- 39:25When she says please don't die, she's like choking her salt,
- 39:28isn't she? Listen to it as well.
- 39:32She always thinks he's dead. We're all very, very respectful
- 39:35of this scene, you know? Yes.
- 39:38Well, yeah, because you know. Oh, then this is.
- 39:42Just to remind us, this is Doctor Who.
- 39:44We've had that very moving scene and he's going on about bloody
- 39:47crystals and Metabelius and all that this.
- 39:50But you've got the break there. It was like, thank you, Miss
- 39:53Smith, thank you. Has everything up.
- 39:55Yeah, yeah. It's all you need, isn't it?
- 39:57From Nick Cole Day. It's a sardonic one liner.
- 40:01Well, here we go again. Goodbye.
- 40:06Look after him. Oh, sorry, I'm being a bit
- 40:08racist. Look.
- 40:10Bring it here. Look, I think it's starting.
- 40:14What's that Blue Peter they need to set?
- 40:16Let's get out of here quick. And it's Tom.
- 40:26I mean it is a a lousy fade. And as regenerations go, it's as
- 40:32basic as you can make it. But I think, I think the lead up
- 40:36to the regeneration is what is the best in regeneration, it's
- 40:39probably the worst. Yeah, I mean, it's simple.
- 40:44It does the job, but it's not massively.
- 40:49It's not a massive technical exercise, which, considering
- 40:51it's it's Barry Letts, is a bit of a surprise.
- 40:54Well, yeah. And he does berate people like
- 40:57Paul Bernard for not like doing more visually interesting things
- 41:02sometimes. And he is guilty himself
- 41:05occasionally. But you know it works, and I
- 41:09think because you've had the build up you don't need anything
- 41:16fancy. No at.
- 41:18That point you're you're done. Well, boys, we need to figure
- 41:23out our nine fabulous things to recommend.
- 41:29Not each I need to go to bed tonight.
- 41:31All right, Rumpy. Fuck.
- 41:33At work tomorrow we do 9 each. Let's.
- 41:37Start with Fraser. I'm going to pick Tom Baker.
- 41:47Oh, he was great. He was.
- 41:49That's one of his best performances.
- 41:50No, I'm going to say the chase scene in episode 2.
- 41:54God. Damn it.
- 41:56Because that's just, you know, five episodes worth of fun.
- 42:03Just, you know, the the perfect sort of like little little gift
- 42:09to put we There you go have a hovercraft, have a gyrocopter,
- 42:12have Bessie, have you, who will be all and just have fun with
- 42:17it. And yeah, this fluff, it's
- 42:20nonsense, you know? Yeah, it serves no purpose
- 42:22whatsoever to the plot, but it is just joyous to watch.
- 42:27It's good fluff. Yes.
- 42:30Sigh. To be completely obvious, the
- 42:36spiders are brilliant. I think the the joy of giving
- 42:42them all female voices, I think is something really special and
- 42:47and works beautifully because it makes it such a different menace
- 42:51to anything else in the poet we era.
- 42:54And I think just that that Doctor Who image of that
- 43:00publicity still of Pertway and Sarah with Sarah having the
- 43:05spider on her back, is so Doctor Who.
- 43:09Is it why he's doing this? Yeah, yeah.
- 43:12And it's the one that was painted on the original book
- 43:15cover. And it's just one of those
- 43:17brilliant, wonderful Doctor Who images that was printed
- 43:21everywhere, and one of those things that you knew before
- 43:24you'd even seen it. And it's it's magnificent, that
- 43:27that whole idea of the spider on the back, the giant spider that
- 43:32finishes perk way off, that's more powerful than all of them,
- 43:35and the fact that they all argue I'm bicker and there's
- 43:38politicking between them all is yeah, it's just really nicely
- 43:42done. Big bugs just work, didn't they?
- 43:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:47Again and again and again. Well, I'm so pleased I'll get to
- 43:49say this one. We've gone through the difficult
- 43:53first two years of the acidic asshole the Doctor.
- 43:58We've come a long way from Season 7 to Season 11, and I do
- 44:03think this showcases Pertwee at his best.
- 44:05I mean, we talked about in Episode 6 alone what the ground
- 44:09that they cover. But like you said, Fraser Wig,
- 44:12they still get to see him as a man of action.
- 44:14We get to see him having charming scenes.
- 44:16We've left Bridge Stewart in episode one, We get to see him
- 44:20very vulnerable in the middle there where he's almost dead.
- 44:24I think it's a really great send off for John Pertwee and I
- 44:27really like the fact it's a bit like the 10th Doctor.
- 44:33We're a bit introspective at the 11th hour.
- 44:38Sorry, that's Matt Smith's story at the end.
- 44:41We're a bit introspective and we're actually saying this is a
- 44:43flawed character and he's facing up to that fact and sort of
- 44:48bowing out with dignity. And I really like that.
- 44:52Awesome. Good choice.
- 44:55Oh, it's me. I'm good pick, Jenny LED.
- 45:00No, I wouldn't do, Jenny LED. Why, Fraser, Why?
- 45:04Why my husband? Why my husband?
- 45:09Why? Why?
- 45:10Just because she's given us so much fun as fans over the years,
- 45:12hasn't she? You know we've we've all laughed
- 45:17and we've all had had a little little snicker with Jenny lad
- 45:23and you know, she's she's got a prize named after her.
- 45:25She had a prize named after her rod out of all places and you
- 45:29know she's the the standard to which you can then hold up any
- 45:34other acting performance of Doctor Who.
- 45:35You know, you go, oh, then, then Judy at the centre of the torus
- 45:39of rubbishes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:40Not Jenny Laird though. But.
- 45:41It's the Jenny's, isn't it? I think it's Jenny Laird and
- 45:44Jenny Thomason. It's the Jenny's.
- 45:50So Jenny Laird is my second pick for just being memorable.
- 45:56I shan't let you choose her, Fraser, I shan't, I shan't.
- 46:02OK, I'm going to choose Richard Franklin and Captain Mike Yates,
- 46:07although he's only Mike Yates in this story, because one of the
- 46:13the wonderful things about this era is the attention they've
- 46:16paid to the characters. And as Joe said, the Doctor has
- 46:19had a lot of attention here. And the fact that they go to the
- 46:24they could have just written Mike off after invasion of the
- 46:27dinosaurs, but they give him a proper redemption and he comes
- 46:31good here. And he's the one who finds the
- 46:35initial problem, brings in Sarah Jane, because he's not sure that
- 46:39the Doctor or the Brigadier will will listen to him because of
- 46:43what's happened. And the warmth between the
- 46:46Doctor and Mike here is something that we've not really
- 46:50seen between the characters a lot of the time.
- 46:53And that's it's really lovely and I think it's a really nice
- 46:56bit of writing and a nice bit of character work to have him
- 47:00properly redeemed and come good at the end of the era when they
- 47:04didn't need to. I think you can trust no one
- 47:10finer than Dudley Simpson to bow out a doctor.
- 47:15And what I love is that rattle shaking thing he does with the
- 47:19spiders. Really good.
- 47:21Which really makes those things where they leap really
- 47:24effective. But it does sort of some
- 47:25bombastic music when the doctors having his chase.
- 47:29Yeah, Dudley Simpson is just brilliant and he's he just knows
- 47:32how to score the show at this point and this is another
- 47:35memorable score. So, Dudley Simpson.
- 47:40I'm going to pick Lupton because I think Lupton is a very.
- 47:49In the cellar. In the cellar.
- 47:50In the cellar. Clever looked and.
- 47:56I loved him because he's obviously he's a master
- 47:59standing. You know I said this in the the
- 48:01first couple of episodes he's you know the it's not the same
- 48:06story that the would have used to borrow the master out with.
- 48:11But he is very much a master standing character here which
- 48:15works for a certain extent doesn't but he is still really
- 48:18quite fleshed out character. You know, he's he's a nobody.
- 48:22He's a nobody man who's just, you know, bitter with life
- 48:27because he hasn't had, you know, hasn't had the recognition he he
- 48:34feels he should have. And you know, he's got some
- 48:37skills and abilities, but ultimately he just does get
- 48:39sidelined and has a very ignoble death at the end.
- 48:44I don't think we've had a villain who's quite so prosaic
- 48:49and basic as. 1. Middle manager who's who's,
- 48:54who's not been promoted, I mean for Doctor Who that's.
- 48:57That's. Absolutely.
- 48:59Pathetic, but kind of frightening because of it, Yeah.
- 49:03Yeah, it's it's kind of like he he wants to take over the world
- 49:06because he got made redundant. Yeah.
- 49:09Basically. Yeah, yes.
- 49:11No. It's a better motive than we've
- 49:13had for some. So you know he's he's he's kind
- 49:18of he's he's relatable and I think he he does make quite a
- 49:23quite an engaging and an interesting character.
- 49:27I think he's very well played by John Durf as well, yeah.
- 49:30I do too. And he's clever.
- 49:33Yeah. Clever, Lapton.
- 49:38So for my final choice, this is a it's a difficult one, but I
- 49:44think I'm going to go for those early scenes between the Doctor
- 49:50and the Brigadier. Because the again, I know Joe,
- 49:56you said that we've seen the evolution of the 3rd Doctor
- 49:59through throughout this era, but the this is the moment, I think,
- 50:06where the Brigadier becomes the Doctor's best friend.
- 50:10And that's the thing that will continue because there's no
- 50:14reason for the Doctor to keep coming back to Earth at this
- 50:18point. The only reason he comes back is
- 50:21because he'd hate to admit it. He's formed a real bond with
- 50:26this group of people and he really likes the Brigadier and
- 50:30we've gone from him calling him Brigadier to calling him
- 50:34Alistair, which we've not had before.
- 50:38And they're going for nights out together and are they doing this
- 50:41all the time or is this a special occasion?
- 50:43Are they going out for dinners? They're dating at this point.
- 50:47This is a real unit. Dating isn't.
- 50:49It but that absolute warmth in those first few scenes where
- 50:55they're in the lab and it's all very informal and they've been
- 50:59to the theatre. They're they're following up the
- 51:01experiments and there's none of that rating of the Brigadier
- 51:06that this happened before and treating him, he's not treating
- 51:10him as as silly or or not understanding.
- 51:15He's there's a meeting of minds that it's like they've come to
- 51:20terms with this and actually they just really like each
- 51:23other. And that's why the Brigadier is
- 51:25there at the end as well, because it's absolutely right he
- 51:28was there right at the start not believing that this was the
- 51:31Doctor and then he's found the most Dr. E Doctor that he he
- 51:36will ever know and. Of course he's got to be there
- 51:39at the end to see it because we can't go through all that again.
- 51:43No, because, yeah, exactly. And it's absolutely earned by
- 51:48Nicholas Courtney. And I think it's a lovely,
- 51:51lovely performance in this story.
- 51:53And we just get Doris mentioned and all those little hints of
- 51:56other other lives that go on. How and how we go from the end
- 52:01of Inferno, where he's like, you know, I've had enough of this
- 52:03pompous military idiot. To and I'm stuck here on earth
- 52:07with you. You Are you saying this where
- 52:11he's in the fear and he goes a little bit too much?
- 52:14It's. Lovely.
- 52:17Well, my last. One, then, is going to be how
- 52:21cleverly and subtly I think this story pulls together the era.
- 52:27Not just the unit presence, not just the big action set pieces.
- 52:33Not just the mention of Joe Grant in the first episode, Not
- 52:37just the mentions of monsters. Yeah, not just the mentions of
- 52:44the Doctor's back story that was in the Time Monster.
- 52:47Not just all of those actors that we've seen throughout the
- 52:51era. Not just giving the Doctor
- 52:53genuinely thoughtful moments, which part we had throughout his
- 52:57run. Like there's so many.
- 52:59The only thing, the only thing that is missing is Roger
- 53:03Delgado, and I kind of almost wish there was a reference.
- 53:08They I can't understand why they didn't do it because the Federer
- 53:11passed. Or Liz.
- 53:13Liz Yeah. Liz.
- 53:14Yeah. Liz as well, yeah.
- 53:16But for the most part, this really is pulling in everything,
- 53:21and it's not sort of in a showy way like you'd get in the new
- 53:24series. No.
- 53:26Well, you think when before has. It's very rare that the Doctor
- 53:32references his old companions after they've gone, let alone
- 53:37have a letter from from Joe. What's from Joe?
- 53:42Yeah. You know and that feels
- 53:46something special like this is bigger than we we normally get
- 53:50because you don't normally get that that call back because the
- 53:55show. The book's even better though,
- 53:56isn't it? Yes, get that whole sequence of
- 53:58Amazon. Yeah.
- 54:00And imagine if they'd filmed that.
- 54:02Imagine if they'd just done that with Joe and Cliff.
- 54:05Just go down some forests in England and film it, you know.
- 54:09I love as well that letter that they read out.
- 54:11You can absolutely hear Katie running it.
- 54:14Goes or they go. So my last thing then is going
- 54:19to be Barry, let's. Oh.
- 54:25Yes, yes. Because, you know, we've talked
- 54:28so much about this being the end of Pertwee era and you know, Jon
- 54:33Pertwee even. But this is this is the end of
- 54:36Barry Letts and Terry sticks his time and more than any of you
- 54:40know turn sticks will come back. Turn sticks will come back and
- 54:43write you know stories for the show again.
- 54:46You know by let's himself will come back and you know executive
- 54:50produce. Or direct Android invasion as
- 54:53well. Yeah, but you know, as a as a
- 54:57swan song for Perk Way, it's fantastic.
- 54:59As a swan song for Barry, let's as well.
- 55:03It's to write produce. He is the author.
- 55:08He gets to put in everything he wants to put into all of that
- 55:11stuff that you mentioned Joe the you know tying up the year with
- 55:14a lot of that is this doubt about let's you know Caston you
- 55:20know actors that put we he's got on with and you know giving him
- 55:25a little treat in in that respect of you know getting rid
- 55:29of work with people that he's he likes again and getting to do
- 55:32stuff he likes to do again. But it's it's it's a little
- 55:35treat for Biolettes as well. You know, he gets to write about
- 55:38Buddhism. You know he get he always wanted
- 55:41to be more of a director. So he gets to direct, you know,
- 55:43and we've talked about like the the script and the direction
- 55:46falling flat a little bit of times.
- 55:47But you know this isn't going to be the best you know story
- 55:52written by Biolettes or directed or produced.
- 55:54But it just feels like the complete package because it is
- 55:58because he's doing everything. Sort of feels.
- 56:00Quintessential Barry let's. Yes, it's absolutely.
- 56:03And I think. Pertwee is Pertwee, but it's the
- 56:05lefties let's as well. And I think for Pertwee, having
- 56:10Barry direct his last story is absolutely perfect because no
- 56:16one else is going to quite get it in the way that Barry did.
- 56:20And I think that's a spot on piece of work from Barry, let's
- 56:24say. Look, it's going to be all
- 56:26right, John, because I'm going to be here.
- 56:28Look, I'm writing it and I'm going to direct it.
- 56:31So whatever happens, you'll be looked after.
- 56:35Exactly. I think I'd say this is a
- 56:39massively flawed story and I use the phrase it isn't the best
- 56:43director that isn't the best written.
- 56:45But within those six episodes you do have some of the very
- 56:50best moments in the Jumper era and I think that the his death
- 56:55at the end is possibly the best moment of the era.
- 57:00Other than making him March round.
- 57:04Well look boys, I mean, it's been 8 bloody months.
- 57:07I can't remember what we said we were going to be doing next.
- 57:11Well, we did 2IN between, didn't we?
- 57:14So, oh, I know where we're going next.
- 57:16Where are we going next, Joe? We're going to redo a story
- 57:19that's already been done and do the PG13 version commentary so
- 57:26disgusting that Psy refuses to listen to it, so he's now
- 57:32redoing it so he can listen to it.
- 57:37Fraser's looking confused, so you better give him a quote.
- 57:40Well, I I guess we're going to the Death Zone on Gallifrey as
- 57:44easy. As pie, as he as pie.
- 57:47That's what he said, Fraser. Don't you remember talking about
- 57:51doing this one? I still don't know which story
- 57:54he's on about. What?
- 57:58This is the Terence Dixiest Dick story that there ever was.
- 58:02Featuring doctors 1234 and 50. He's doing it.
- 58:12But the Dixiest Dix is ambassadors of death, and I've
- 58:14done that one. No, that's the Hulkiest home.
- 58:19Now we weren't going to do this for the for the anniversary, but
- 58:22that's long past now. We did a lot of for the
- 58:24anniversary. Absolutely.
- 58:27By the time we'll get round to another one, it'll probably be
- 58:29the next anniversary. So coming in 20, what is the
- 58:35next anniversary? 203533 the.
- 58:42Five doctors picturing Simon Hart Fraser and Joe Ford.
- 58:48We'll reconvene for that one, and I know we'll have fun with
- 58:51it as well. I don't think it's going to be
- 58:53too much of A hardship for any of us to re watch that.
- 58:56Probably done none of the 12 versions by then.
- 58:58You can all once again tell me just how amazing Peter Moffitt's
- 59:02direction is. It's the Muffet.
- 59:10Go on, say it. I don't think I can even get
- 59:13those words out. Fraser, it's.
- 59:16The Mafiatius Muffet. I'll cut it right there.
- 59:20I'll cut it there.
