- 0:00Hey, cannon Ball, I like your statement. When life takes a cheap
- 0:03shadow you you stand your ground. Billy Corgan smashing pumpkins homage, Simpson smiling
- 0:08politely. You know, my kids think you're the greatest, and thanks to
- 0:12your gloomy music, they finally stop dreaming of a future I can possibly provide.
- 0:16Well, We try to make a difference. Four finger Discounted. Welcome
- 0:37to four figure discount A very special classic review gone all the way back to
- 0:40season seven of the Simpsons. This week, we're here to review Home a
- 0:44Paloozer. I'm Denk and I am gud. This is classic rock. You
- 0:48know, we we're excited. We rub a hands together sometimes and sometimes I
- 0:53couldn't believe how much I related to this one from a whole new perspective.
- 0:57I hadn't gone back and review this one since maybe twenty seventeen did this with
- 1:00Mitch. I've maybe watched it one or two times since then, But this
- 1:03one here, I watched it going, holy shit, I'm home now.
- 1:07When you're in, when you're at thirties and you're sort of reaching in mid
- 1:11thirties as you have, yeah, that's when it really starts to kick and
- 1:14it's like, oh, yeah, the generation gap is real and I am
- 1:17on one side of it. Yeah. The thing is this episode, right,
- 1:19it feels like a real time capsule. However, because of the story
- 1:23told within it, right, it's an episode that feels timeless as well,
- 1:27rather than dated, because it's a it's spoken Vickiet Generation X, right,
- 1:30and it's got a nineties vibe to it. But just the story of feeling
- 1:34out of touch will forever be relatable. Well, it's incredibly summed up in
- 1:38that bit the the Grandpa meme. Yeah, it was like, yeah,
- 1:42I used to be with it. Now what now? What it is is
- 1:45just scary and unfamiliar to me. It's going to happen to you too,
- 1:47It's like, and of course we'll change what it was. When you now
- 1:51see that as a young person, you're like, well, I think the
- 1:53zone're even saying this episode, No way, man, I'm cool forever,
- 1:57a rock on forever, forever forever. Yeah, and now it's incredible.
- 2:01I mean I've got a few, uh say, a few years, a
- 2:05few decades on you. But for me, it was funny looking at the
- 2:09way Generation X, my generation is depicted in this and how of course I'm
- 2:15an old man. I'm kind of shaking my fist at the Zoomers and the
- 2:17millennials, going, you're just not with it. Their mood, their attitude
- 2:23is very similar to me at least. It's like, oh, so this
- 2:28is how I probably looked to my parents order people like, oh, you
- 2:32know, you're apathetic and you know, oh you don't believe in anything,
- 2:37and you just you want everything handed to you. It's like, was I
- 2:39really like that? Because that's how I regard the kids these days. Every
- 2:43generation feels like the generation after them has it easy. Oh absolutely, in
- 2:46my day. Every once in a while someone will bring up it's like there
- 2:53was some graffiti on the walls in like ancient Greece or ancient Rome, we
- 2:58had a philosopher saying, but children they believe in nothing. Yeah, they
- 3:04are lazy and shiftless and all these kinds. Oh my god. It's always
- 3:07it has always been this way, and it will probably always be. It
- 3:10feels like generation always feels when he gets like forty to fifty, you feel
- 3:15like the younger generation you're scared of them, because now quite often he people.
- 3:20We used to be able to leave the front doors unlocked and it's like,
- 3:22we can't do that anymore. And it's like, I do think it
- 3:25feels a little bit more dangerous now too. But also the world is so
- 3:28much more accessible now where we're hearing all these horrible news stories on a more
- 3:31global scale. Yeah, and you wonder if it becomes a bit of a
- 3:36self perpetual, self fulfilling prophecy in that regard. It's like, oh,
- 3:39okay, so so I'm talking about I used to be able to leave my
- 3:44door unlocked, and now people think my door's unlocked. Way better lock my
- 3:46door. Yeah. Yeah, it's an interesting but that's just the dynamic.
- 3:52That's not necessarily the story here. No, the story here is Homer feeling
- 3:54out of touch with his kids. Yeah, this is just I used to
- 3:58be cool and now I'm not cool. Yeah, yeah, which I'm going
- 4:00through now. Or you know, you are still cool, but you're cool
- 4:03on your terms. Yeah, but someone else is setting the terms, or
- 4:09someone who is setting society's terms. Because we always think the kids know what's
- 4:14what. Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. I mean, is this they
- 4:18talk about what do they actually call the festival? And this they don't call
- 4:23it? Home holor loser holoor Palooser. But but this is based on Lollapalooser.
- 4:29Yeah, and I don't know if we actually talked about it on air,
- 4:32but there's a documentary on Paramount Plus I'm called Lola, the Story of
- 4:36Lollapalooza, the festival and how you said it's worth watching. It's pretty interesting.
- 4:41Yeah, it was the Woodstock one though, right, No, no,
- 4:44but that is so good. Well that's because it was such a you're
- 4:46talking about Woodstock ninety al. Yeah, I'm just so glad we have all
- 4:50the footage of it. I'm like, this was fucking crazy, I know.
- 4:56Yeah, but looking at this this three part doc o called Lola,
- 4:59I mean it's very much. It's executive produced by Perry Farrell, who was
- 5:03the front man of Jane's Addiction and basically established a Lola Paloser and so and
- 5:10so you a lot of You've got a lot of these people from say Rage
- 5:12against the Machine and all these other bands, right, yeah, yeah,
- 5:15you're thinking about Perry Farrell, is he is a genius? And then he
- 5:17got Perry Farrell saying I don't know, I think I just you know,
- 5:19I just wanted to get a lot of people together and have play some music.
- 5:23It's like, Perry, you're pumping up your own tires here. Lu
- 5:26and I were we watched together when we were Cut of Love. I think
- 5:29Perry Farrell might be the you know, president of the Perry Farrell fan club.
- 5:32By the n we're going. He was kind of onto something. He's
- 5:36a bit of a he's a little up himself, but justifiably so. If
- 5:41you are a subscriber to Paramount Plus or you want to get that Sweet Sweet
- 5:44you know what is it free week trial or something like that, Lola is
- 5:48definitely worth checking out. But you're watching that as as I said a member
- 5:54of Generation X. It was launched in the early nineties and had you know,
- 5:59these terrific bands that are now sort of iconic bands of that era in
- 6:02their early stages like yeah, Iced Tea is there? Yeah, Rage against
- 6:06the Machine, all these others, Pearl Jam, et cetera, et cetera.
- 6:11Nirvana thought it would be selling out, so they didn't do it.
- 6:14They did do They did Redding Festival. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
- 6:16but look at they go, Wow, that's so incredibly vibrant and cool.
- 6:19Look at these great bands. You know, music was never so good.
- 6:23And then Lolla Blois went away for a while, got re launched, and
- 6:27they were like, I don't recognize any of these bands are artists, and
- 6:30the one that they do, they straighten me is pop sellouts. They don't
- 6:31like them, Billy I, at least you do. That's cool. What
- 6:38was that festival that just went to ship about three or four years ago as
- 6:41a whole documentary about it, five Festival. Yeah, I still haven't watched
- 6:46that documentary. Pretty fun. Yeah, just if you're like watching shit go
- 6:48up in metaphorically go up in flames as opposed to Woodstock with the shit literally
- 6:54went up. Yeah, it was Fred Dorsa says break ship or something.
- 6:58Oh yeah, yeah, break stuff. It's like they did, okay,
- 7:04Fred, I love like there's a point like in the documentary was like mid
- 7:09like performance, everyone's like, oh shit, to cut the mics. Oh
- 7:12yeah. But this episode I also thought looked at the relationship with Homer and
- 7:17Bart in particular and sometimes Lisa. Yeah, but his main focus is the
- 7:21arc of Homer appearing uncool and embarrassing to his kids, particularly, but it
- 7:26embarrasses him in front of his friends, to the person that he admires the
- 7:28most, to by the end being the uncool parent again, despite the fact
- 7:33that he put his family first. I feel like I'm at the moment there
- 7:35with Aliott not not yet, but I'm dreading them where I'm not cool to
- 7:39ali anyonere because right now I'm not his world. But it's like everything I
- 7:43do, it's like he looks up to me. They'll get a point where
- 7:45he wants to take on the word himself and I won't be cool anymore.
- 7:47But I think we all go through that phase of our parents aren't cool.
- 7:50They're talking about they just trying to tell us off, tell us to do
- 7:53things because they are our parents. They want to boss us around. And
- 7:56you get to like maybe seventeen eighteen, you're like, oh shit, you
- 7:59were just trying to me up for life. Oh you had a point.
- 8:01Yeah, all those stories there was a meaning to them. Yes. So
- 8:05I just love the way that the arc there of it was uncool. He
- 8:09admired him. He's uncol but eventually he will, yeah, realize it's funny.
- 8:16Lou had to pick a daughter up in Melbourne, yeah, from a
- 8:18concert on Sunday night, and they were driving back and you know, the
- 8:24girls in the back are talking about something and have you tried anel as a
- 8:28conversations in jo of Nicholas. At one time, Nichola was out at a
- 8:31went out for dinner with her friends from mother's and the mom picked up the
- 8:35girls right, No, it was at a handstone note anyway, and the
- 8:39mother of one of the girls picked him up, was driving him home and
- 8:41when it was like, so if you guys tried anal and then one of
- 8:43the guys like, because I like the chick say it was in the front
- 8:48with her mum's just like Nicholas, like, it was so fucking awkward.
- 8:52Lou's story is relatively tame, I think to a conversation and basically, can
- 9:01you explain the Drake Kendrick Lamar beef to me? And the girls then did
- 9:05so and then put on some songs and now lose algorithm as but Spotify playlist
- 9:11is now just but you came. I think I'm I think I'm team Kendrick.
- 9:16Though Drake sounds like a dirt back just throws in a bit of a
- 9:20cally ca Well, that was my job back in the day. Also,
- 9:26I appreciated the satire of just music festivals in general and the specialization of them
- 9:30all just the ticket well that yeah, but that's very much what Lolapalooza is
- 9:33as well. Yeah. I mean I think music festivals prior of that probably
- 9:37had no they would have had setups of things like that. But again Perry
- 9:43Farrell sort of pumping up his own tires. He was like, yeah,
- 9:46we also had art stands and political stands, and you know, all these
- 9:48things could be all these showcases and not just one side of politics. We
- 9:54wanted to have everybody on this budget jump for racism or something, yeah,
- 9:56like exchange other ideas and things like that, and having them go into oh
- 10:03god, I forgot the name already home Hulla Blues Holabalooser Yeah, but with
- 10:07a Hella baloos Hella Balooser. Yeah, having them go in and it's all
- 10:11these different corporations and everything like that. Yeah, this feels very much like
- 10:16you're trying to thread the needle of art and commerce. Yeah. Yeah,
- 10:18so, and we also got a very thought a South parkish ending, not
- 10:22quite the end, but towards the end. Words like, we learned something
- 10:26today about with the music festival. I think it was especially Pumpkins, yeah,
- 10:30who were saying, it's just like you know what you know, and
- 10:31that's where they realized that they're rich. I think, Oh, Billy Corgan,
- 10:35especially Billy Corgan, he was. It was a real good sport.
- 10:37Yeah, him, him and em and Peter Frampton man. But let's talk
- 10:41a bit about the musical lineup. Yes, yes, they had in this
- 10:45episode because it was Cypress Hill was the one I think everyone remembers the most,
- 10:48maybe specially Pumpkins, but Cypress Hill and the fucking orchestra. Yeah,
- 10:52very much so. But prior to the people that they actually got for this,
- 10:56they wanted now a bunch of others and some turned them down and some
- 11:00were not included for other reasons because apparently they've got Peter Frampton in there.
- 11:05Frampton very big in the seventies. Anyone who's watched Wayne's Well knows, you
- 11:09know, they were Basically I still don't know who he is. I just
- 11:11know from the Simpsons. Yeah, you got his pig wouldn't work. That's
- 11:13not allies lunch. If you're in the if you're around in the nineteen seventies,
- 11:16basically every house had a copy of Frampton Comes Alive. Really okay,
- 11:20yeah, that was his live album. It was a double album. But
- 11:24yeah, just huge. In the nineteen seventies, Wain's Well says, you
- 11:26know, I think they're he and Wayne and Tea Carrera at like the record
- 11:31shop and like what's this? Yeah, every every home came with this.
- 11:35You bought a house, You've got a copy of Framden comes Live. He's
- 11:37kind of the elder statesman in this. They initially wanted Bob Dylan and yeah,
- 11:43and Dylan. I think she said no, thanks. Sorry anytime Dylan's
- 11:48mentioned I've got it. Oh again, Sorry, it's time for things.
- 11:52Guys saw on Twitter there was some tweet last night where this woman wrote,
- 11:58uh, my husband seeing wheels on the bus in the style of Bob Dylan,
- 12:03and now my baby is unbelievably angry. I saw that while I was
- 12:09on the couch with Lou and again I was just laughing at like why are
- 12:11you laughing. Sometimes you see things on social media like this is what the
- 12:16Internet's for very much. It's just just a snappy comment that you would normally
- 12:20hear at the pub or something. It's like oh, my husband saying it
- 12:24was on the buzz like Bob Dylan. It just pissed off the kid.
- 12:26The weird and the bad It's like, have you seen a video of people
- 12:31have frogs doing a frog splash? Have you seen a video? Is that
- 12:35the one you sent me with the frog on the ladder? Yeah? The
- 12:37frog on the table and they played John sens visico. Did the frogs flash
- 12:39through the table? This is what the Internet was made for? But someone
- 12:45else they wanted, well, they want to Courtney Love and Whole. Yeah,
- 12:48and or she originally had the line of the smiling politely that's right.
- 12:52I mean it would have been, oh, Homer, I'm a big fan
- 12:54Courtney Love, which when Homer replies, Homer grateful, which is not work
- 13:00as well. That's not unfunny, But for mine, it's it's a top
- 13:05ten Simpsons exchange. Its politely Yeah, Billy Corgan's smashing punkins. What was
- 13:11Simpson smiling? You could just retire? Yeah, written that, I mean,
- 13:18you might as well just hang up your guns. It was almost like
- 13:20Courtney Love and Hole turning down The Simpsons was like the universe trying to set
- 13:22them up for this perfect gag. But did they turn them down because apparently
- 13:26Sonic Youth, who appear in this episode were like, we're not going to
- 13:28be on this episode if Courtney Love is in this Well, they didn't respond
- 13:31to the to the quest. Yeah, Love was wanted specifically for one joke,
- 13:35which was the exchange, and they it's never got back. But that
- 13:37has been said that at something Weekly said that that johny Youth wouldn't appear.
- 13:41I just love this like into inter which they wouldn't appear if whole were there.
- 13:46Of Courtney Love was there. Well, of course there was this ongoing
- 13:48rumor slash urban legend that you know, Kirkerban didn't actually kill him stuff,
- 13:52all that'd vidiculousfomped Corney Love. It's yeah, I don't know kind of you
- 13:58know, riggs and misogyny and jealousy and all this kind of ship. Yeah,
- 14:01I think it's just let's okay, Yeah, let's not get let's not
- 14:05bring the mood down. But you're right, I mean, but no doubt
- 14:09we're also in this episode. They were. Indeed, it didn't have any
- 14:11line I noticed in the back because Eric was working. Was he right or
- 14:15was the animator on the show animator? I think I think it was an
- 14:16anime. It was an animated Yes, is he animator on the show?
- 14:20Yeah, But Cyprus Hill playing to their strengths or playing into their stereotyp like
- 14:24they were stoned all the time, but also how great is just insane in
- 14:28the brain? Oh god? Or basically anything by Cypress Hill but just so
- 14:31distinctive, but particularly hearing the orchestra do it though, right. It's one
- 14:39of those things where in theory is like this could be cool, and here
- 14:41you're like, goes now this I life is like it's actually fucking amazing,
- 14:46Yeah, because I mean, is it insane the rain or they're sort of
- 14:48doing like no, itice it is, but it's like a it's like a
- 14:52jaunty version that they're doing, like his singing as as the violin. Yeah,
- 14:58I thought that was sort of doing another song that sounded a bit like
- 15:01it because a bit of a nerdy reference here, but you've seen The Godfather
- 15:07and Godfather part not all too there's a bit in the start of two where
- 15:11you know they're at this big event and there's an orchestra playing, and one
- 15:16of the mobster guys goes to the band is that you're not playing any Italian
- 15:20music player Tarantella. Yeah, and the band doesn't know it and they play
- 15:26pop goes the weasel instead. Never it's just all the all the whites are
- 15:30like, that's hilarious, and the mob going oh you uncle, And that's
- 15:35what it's sort of sounds like to me, is like we don't quite get
- 15:37this, but we do. Yeah, I know. I still thought it
- 15:41was very, very funny, but just all that stuff, did you we
- 15:45actually ordered the Oxtra Okay, fine, let's go. Let's go with that
- 15:48possibly high Cypress Hill. Yeah. I think that they captured the vibe of
- 15:54music traveling music festival as well, because you think of music festivals now right,
- 15:58and then they exist much in Australia at all, but it doesn't feel
- 16:02like a traveling music festival exists anymore when the bands are all like hanging out
- 16:07together. Yeah. I mean, well, one of the things about this
- 16:08Loblo documentary is that how it was a traveling thing, was it really thens
- 16:14just got two nuts and now it's just based in Chicago. Yeah okay,
- 16:17yeah, which because it's just now bands have their own rooms, they find
- 16:19their own way to get there, which I can get that, but just
- 16:22the idea of the comaraderie that would come with traveling together, yeah, well
- 16:26you see that on this documentary as well. Everyone's so yeah, backing each
- 16:29other up and having fun with each other. It's great. But yeah,
- 16:32I think you're right in that Smashing Pumpkins are kind of the MVP guest performance
- 16:37in this episode. I mean not just yeah, Billy Corgan, I think
- 16:38is great. Everyone has their moment, some of you have the cooler moment,
- 16:42Smashing Pumpkins especially, And then they actually play a song yeah we can't
- 16:47get insane in the brain as well, but also playing my probably my favorite
- 16:51Smashing Pumpkins song, I love zero. It's a fantastic. Yeah, I
- 16:55love it. I'm very much home with it and nod my head like I
- 16:57was in the band. Oh my god. The early bit of cultural appropriation
- 17:04from Homer. I love having a batch too cool for this planet. This
- 17:11really strike. This whole episode is great in terms of its references, because
- 17:15it's one thing that I think, you know, a lot of us love
- 17:18about, particularly classic bench Simpsons or whatever. How it throws in just references
- 17:22from all over the place, whether it's you know, I mean, this
- 17:26has got stuff that's very relevant to Lollapalooza and Generation X and all that kind
- 17:30of stuff. But you know, the bit where home is strutting around.
- 17:33That's like fabulous, very freak brothers. That's seventies alternative animation designed to designed
- 17:40to make him feel old as well. Yeah. Also, yeah, example
- 17:41of es. You know, oh, this was cool when he was a
- 17:44kid, but you know you're gonna have people who were Homer's age at this
- 17:48stage when this episode released, going, at least I got that bit,
- 17:52you know, that's when I was with it. Yeah, And also,
- 17:55I mean, sorry, what was the release date of this episode? This
- 17:57was in ninety six. Look at up hanging one second. It was released
- 18:02originally May nineteenth, ninety six. Yeah, even the bit where Homer wants
- 18:07to be sort of part of the cool crowd. Those guys at the what
- 18:10do they call it, oh, the second Basemobile, Yeah, they're all
- 18:14the Franken's sign what's the signs? A song by the Winner Group? Yeah,
- 18:18dirt dirt fucking What's a good song. Absolutely, But all the characters
- 18:22around the van are styled like characters from the movie Dazed and Confused, which
- 18:27came out a few earlier. Okay, yeah, I mean particularly the guy
- 18:30with the blonde hair who's sort of talking about second base. We were that's
- 18:33McConaughey's character from someone's talk about mcnaughey, he's got a bit of a welcome
- 18:37to the second basement. Yeah, so even throwing stuff like that, and
- 18:41I mean Days and FEUs was never a huge hit, but it became a
- 18:44cult hit over the following years. So even to throw that in, it's
- 18:47just like if you know, you know, and that's it's just be so
- 18:49great for that. It used to be really great. Even if you didn't
- 18:52get everything, there was going to be someone who got it. Because it
- 18:55feels like now that we're reviewing season nineteen episodes, it feels like the're trying
- 18:56to references that a pop culture current at that time, and it's like you
- 19:02forgot the lesson of home a Loser. Yeah, yeah, that's that strikes
- 19:07me as a bit a little bit sad, Yes, but I just yeah,
- 19:11this overall just really really relate to his episode from my host perspective,
- 19:14which really surprised me. And there's a lot of gags in this that I
- 19:17missed as a kid. I can't remember. I may have missed them when
- 19:19we did our last review, but get into them now with favorite moments.
- 19:25My favorite so one that I really loved. It's just a passing comment.
- 19:27When Homer and Barter in the kitchen and he's telling me the question, how
- 19:32do you wear boxes or briefs? Nope, nope, always lost on me.
- 19:37I was like, that's funny. Great, so many Nope gags like
- 19:41that are fantastic. I mean, everyone knows that I love you, Beware
- 19:45the Eyes of March. That one, that one's almost as good. So
- 19:49I not that the joke was over my head. I just never heard that.
- 19:53Yeah, yeah, it's the one that it's a throwaway and it's almost
- 19:57a perfect joke. Oh, it's so good. And the suicide Notes formally
- 20:02good vibrations. That is perfect. But suicide Notes is a great name for
- 20:07a for a music store. Yeah, it's not that it is, yeah,
- 20:11for that year, but also formerly they were walking in there, bright
- 20:15eyed, pushing tailed. Hey where's this? You know? Classic? Right?
- 20:18Yeah, old old oldies. Yeah, it's like, well, I
- 20:22don't know if you listen to the radio in your car or if you sometimes
- 20:25Yeah, but it's there's no more bracing moment I announced to the oldies stage.
- 20:30Yeah, yeah, the stuff that you grew up on is now on
- 20:33great, good times, great, it's on five are Kings of Leona is
- 20:36now in the classics, And I'm like, oh, I guess it's like
- 20:38that old. Yeah, apparently the good criteria now is ten years plus.
- 20:42Okay. I'm like, I don't think have de find classic or oldies like
- 20:45ten years. I guess it's old, but I think it used to be
- 20:48like twenty years to be twenty. Yeah, it used to be. You
- 20:51put class Gold one of four point three's, but isn't a Shaw Gold one
- 20:52of four point three classic great classic hits. That's what I whenever I use
- 20:56that phrase good times, great class Ye, that's their catch right. Essentially,
- 21:00it felt like when you put it on, it was always rolling stones
- 21:02or beetles or abbro. Now it's stuff from like mid to late two thousand.
- 21:06I'm like, oh shit, the killers are on here. Okay then,
- 21:10but I also enjoyed just the iconic used to be with it. And
- 21:14Homo Siems is smiling politey, But what else did you enjoy? Yeah,
- 21:17Homo Simson smiling polity is just an Ald timer. I think I've got down
- 21:22boxes and briefs as well. A really great cut in this episode was you
- 21:29know Homer when he's finally got the sort of approval of the crowd and he's
- 21:33shouting his slow they remember kids don't trust anybody over thirty and now Bitter Brampton,
- 21:41very very good. I like the shout out to the Jim Rose circus,
- 21:44which people's that's that's essentially the freak show because that was something that was
- 21:48that lollapalooza, but also to it itself. When I was riding for Street
- 21:52Press interview Jim Rose, this is baby Yeah. I mean I love how
- 21:56the guy the sort of the entrepreneur he calls it. I like you to
- 22:00be part of my what is it my page on the trans Mundane it's the
- 22:03freak trip at his office. But this is yeah, this guy called Jim
- 22:08Rose, he essentially set up what was basically an old time Carnie freak show
- 22:12where you had guys who were like, you know, they had weights on
- 22:15them, they had pierced nipples and they would put like weights on them.
- 22:18Or people who would you put a straw up there, a tube up their
- 22:22nose and dawn it in their stomach and they would pump a lot of beer
- 22:25into it and then they'd regurgitate it and drink it and one things that I'm
- 22:30sorry I keep pumping up the tires of this Lollaballoozer documentary, But they show
- 22:33footage of it where Eddie Vedder and a couple of others come out on stage.
- 22:37While they're doing it, it's like, who's going to drink from this?
- 22:38And anybody was like, I'll take a step, like, yeah,
- 22:41I drank the bar. I would go into a I never forgot it.
- 22:45It would have been like a maybe seven eight year old birthday party from school
- 22:48and one kid put spaghetti up his nose in at his mouth, has poorn
- 22:51it. Oh, mortified me. I've never forgotten that it would just like
- 22:56this. Yeah, this bar guy is probably like the least a great he
- 23:00just of the Jim Row circus, because you had a guy with like a
- 23:02Prince Albert piercing and a dick and he would like put really heavy weights on
- 23:06it. And I think I don't know if someone was like hammering nails into
- 23:10their scroat set. But it was really transgressive top which is what we were
- 23:14into in the nineties. We were like, yeah, let's push some boundaries.
- 23:15Then it's not that far, not that far. Yeah, they used
- 23:19to be with it. Memes just hilarious. Suicide notes again fantastic. You've
- 23:25probably got your folder on your laptop of like you know, just pictures that
- 23:29you've downloaded for the innet or memes or whatever downwards folder. Oh absolutely,
- 23:33And yeah, one that I've got is home it just got You've got the
- 23:34sass. You got the sass? Yeah, which is ja Turkey is a
- 23:41bad person. Is a bad person, but just you've got to have things
- 23:48on hand for when someone just is trying too hard to be cool. You
- 23:52just throw that got assassin, do you assassin' it? So, yeah,
- 23:56something I really love. But there's gonna be I'm sure there's gonna be more
- 24:00coming. He found something people about something. As I said Generation X member,
- 24:04here is a good line. Like I thought I had an appetite for
- 24:07destruction. I just wanted a club sandwich. That's me. I mean there's
- 24:15variations on that throughout the episode. I used to ruck and roll on it
- 24:18and party every day. Now I can only find half an hour get party
- 24:22every day every day. Appetite for destruction. All I won was a club
- 24:26sandwhich is the better version of that for mine? So I like, I
- 24:30love that a lot. Next question, you there eating the beast. All
- 24:34right, trivia time. My first question for you is what is the station
- 24:37at Homer is listening to? He is listening to k FSL Fossil one O
- 24:41three. Yes, what done right? Your faxt question of mine? Who
- 24:44provides the competent drum work in Grand Funk Growler, Damn, no, no
- 24:48idea. It was Don Brewer. I like the as Grand Funk. You
- 24:52guys don't know Grand Funk side. Feel free to cut this outside because this
- 24:57is well, this is a semi relate. Listeners to the show will know
- 25:00that Louise and I love the show ninety Day Fiance. There's a UK very
- 25:04end called naetyd Fiance UK. Who knew but a lot of these people on
- 25:08this show they're looking for love. They will go to the Dominican Republic,
- 25:11which has been abbreviated to the DR. It gets referred to the DR as
- 25:17a lot. This woman on ninety Day UK has found the love of her
- 25:22life in the Dominican Republic and she says she's off to the dom rep LU
- 25:27and I looked at it, so I said that ain't it. She didn't
- 25:33get the memo she used to be with it. Now what now what whether
- 25:37this change they changed what it was? Now? What she's with isn't it?
- 25:42But it was the lairs that we both look at her. She means
- 25:45the dr, the DR, the dom Rep, the dom Rep. Eh,
- 25:49his tom is good. Your next question for me what worthy promotions on
- 25:56the ticket? Oh? For authentic refreshment yet Clark bar Clark bars, and
- 26:03I forgot cloud pass rings. Justin's Justin's what done? Yeah? Go Jostin's.
- 26:11The guy behind the counter at Suicide Notes is reading what magazine? No
- 26:15idea. It's called Mondo Frown, which honestly it does sound like the title
- 26:19of a zine. It does. Yeah, oh zines? Oh good stuff.
- 26:22They were the original blog. So my next question is the blog was
- 26:29a what you had before podcasts? What do you get at the vet while
- 26:33you wait? Oh? Oh god, damn it? Cat detailed, cat
- 26:37detailing. Yes, do I have anymore for you? I've got one more.
- 26:42I'll give it to you. Why are you looking for one? My
- 26:45final one is what or where? Sorry? It? Did Peter Frampton buy
- 26:48the pig? You got them a pink Floyd? Yes, I don't think
- 26:53I've got any more for him because I had k K F s O L
- 26:57A F L. Sorry, what's getting Review of Homer Palouser The visual air
- 27:02date was May nineteenth, nineteen ninety six. Written by Brent Forrester and directed
- 27:07by Wes Archer. The Cashgaer family enters in a black light haze. Lighting
- 27:11returns to normal when Homer turns on the lights. I thought, just the
- 27:12vibeent it just felt right for this episode as well. Absolutely it does.
- 27:17Yeah, yeah, just the sort. It was all like Neon, wasn't
- 27:18it. Yeah, that whole Clowe in the dark black light poster deal.
- 27:22Yeah. This episode kicks off with Otto he's having a dream about winning the
- 27:26safety award for bus drivers at the school district safety Awards. Millhouse wakes him
- 27:30up. It nearly hits Jasper. I just thought it's a really fun sequence
- 27:33where it ends up in the wrecking yard and it's squashing it as they're running
- 27:34out. Yeah, it was just animated really well. Just a cool little
- 27:37action sequence. Who's good to keep his secrets and cuts too Marge reading the
- 27:41letter out loud waiving any legal responsibility on the school's part in perpetuity for threat
- 27:45the universe forever. So Homer is now suggests well, it's gonna be like
- 27:49a road trip to school with your dad, and it kind of comes out
- 27:55of nowhere. But I guess they need to establish early. You can't waste
- 27:57time of Homer becoming uncoollsh home it's just uncol And I guess at that age
- 28:02your parents is always uncol aren't They are the idea of a roach it with
- 28:04your dad. Yeah, not really not really working. And it's the I
- 28:08think it's the enthusiasm home has for it too. It's like, ah,
- 28:11you're a little too eager for this. I've certainly had times when I've had
- 28:15to pick up lose kids from either from school or from their work, particularly
- 28:19Lo's daughter who's a teenage girl who's just got no time for mum's uncle boyfriends.
- 28:25I don't know this guy, stranger danger Amber alert. But I think
- 28:33the first couple of times I was like, I'll make conversation and all of
- 28:34a sudden, it's nice way for it to get to know each other.
- 28:37Now it's just like, how's work? Cool? All right? No more
- 28:41words until your phone comes out? Oh yeah, absolutely for the fifteen minute
- 28:45drive home. So this is the way it is. No I can I
- 28:49can imagine and that's understandable as well. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 28:52Man. For a while I was like, I'm not like, oh,
- 28:56we're going to be best buddies. But you know, this is a
- 28:57nice way to break the ice. Like, no, this is breaking the
- 29:00eyes. It probably is better that you can just becomfortable sitting in the car
- 29:03like that. Oh yeah yeah, but he brings up those rainbow suspenders are
- 29:07cool way to keep your pants up. But my favorite part about this whole
- 29:11sequence was but continuing nervousness of going Dad, Dad, that Dad. You
- 29:17can see, Oh, he's gonna say something that's going to really embarrass me.
- 29:19But then he tries to teach me how to say jive. Oh see
- 29:22these kids now with jive printed on their shirts. Now I can teach you
- 29:26how you're supposed to say jive. Dad. Please just drive the car,
- 29:30Dad, I'm watching the road, sweetie. You Jeff Turkey, See,
- 29:36you got to assess it. Quit javing me, Turkey, You got to
- 29:40assesss it. Turkey is a band brutude. Then he puts on the radio
- 29:45and the station is now for playing Abbato Zeppelin and the Comma Lid. Yes,
- 29:52they put on puts on the track and Nelson's just like you tell me
- 29:55time, So he gets me house to say he change the station, and
- 29:56home is just disgusted. Then they don't know. You guys don't know Grand
- 30:00Funk and the way he details every every person brings their own little element to
- 30:03the band. More information can set you school Ybrary another way of showing these
- 30:07out of touch. I guess in nineteen ninety six, I guess the library
- 30:10is still library. Still question. Yeah, yeah we have the internet,
- 30:12Yeah, yeah, it's true. The next day have it, but yeah
- 30:15it's not as yeah not the go to yeh in ninety six? Do we
- 30:18really the kids was accessible in ninety sixty incident? Did everyone have ourahome computer
- 30:22with the incident? Oh? I don't think so, but betting Carter and
- 30:25Cyclopedia correct. Next day though, Homer is he's playing Mississippi Queen and he
- 30:30says, yeah, you know, you notice for a good song sometimes no,
- 30:33no, no, don't start the rocket. But he's trying to help
- 30:37in terms of like, well these guys led to Jeffers air Plane, which
- 30:41then provided the lift up for Jefferson Starship. He's trying to help, but
- 30:44he's also trying to make himself feel Oh yeah, he's well cool, Yeah,
- 30:48this is real credible stuff. Yeah. Everyone feels like they're passing on
- 30:52the wisdom, and in a way they are, because it's like, well
- 30:56whatever, you're an ever an elder person who went to Ford, right,
- 30:59whatever. They'd be telling me things. I always listen because I'm like,
- 31:02these guys have waited for thirty years. They know what's up. So I'm
- 31:04just a dumb fucking kid. Yeah, And I mean even with culture,
- 31:07I mean, sure, you've got to have your ownership of the stuff that's
- 31:10yours. Yeah, of your era. But I think as you get a
- 31:12little bit further down the line, maybe just a year or two, you
- 31:15realize, oh, well there wouldn't be this without that, So maybe I
- 31:19should listen to that and find out where it came from. Well maybe I'm
- 31:22just an outliwer and a big old nerd. They would make fun of me
- 31:26for doing my podcast or what's this super Simpsons thing you do? And I'm
- 31:29like, have fun stacking car parts forever, buddy or not? May be?
- 31:34But Bart says this is here related, but says you embarrassed me.
- 31:40No, I'm not. I dread the moment where I embarrass my kids but
- 31:44I don't realize that I am. It's like, oh no, officially I'm
- 31:47that guy. But but then yells at him, so I'm just trying to
- 31:49party with you. Guys. You actually feel really sorry for homing you,
- 31:52don't you. Yeah, so he says, you know, they say they
- 31:55wouldn't party with you if you'd a last out on Earth, which I thought
- 31:56was a bit harsh. But then Hope and then goes to suicide. It's
- 32:00formally good Vibrations and I'm asked for let's release from uh Bread? Is it?
- 32:04Oh? Yeah, yeah, it's in the oldies Holdies? Where can
- 32:07I find the latest releases by Bread? Oldies Holdies? But you've got all
- 32:12the top bands in here sticks. I just heard them on the King Biscuit
- 32:15Flower Hour. Now here are some of your no name bands. Sonic Youth,
- 32:22nine Inch Nails. Hallabalooza Hollabaloosa is a music festival, the greatest music
- 32:28festival of all time. There can only be one truly great music festival a
- 32:31lifetime, and it's the US Festival, the What Festival, the Art Festival.
- 32:37Geez It was sponsored by that guy from Apple Computers. What Computers.
- 32:44This is a data joke. A joke that doesn't make sense now sponsored by
- 32:46what computers. It's like Apple runs the world now, but there was a
- 32:52time where it didn't. Eh, it's crazy to think that Apple in ninety
- 32:55six was seen as like the dying Oh absolutely, the old fashion one.
- 33:00Yeah, one thing I really liked as well. I mean I talked about
- 33:01how this is sort of very representative Generation X, but that whole kind of
- 33:06voice yeah, and passionizing, smart ass tone. Yeah, and I'm just
- 33:10talking to you, you know. It was like, oh, but as
- 33:14a generation exer, I'm like, my boy never talk like that, And
- 33:16now thinking that's how Zoomer's talk. Yes, it's like, oh no,
- 33:20every young every young generation sort of goes, don't you go get it all
- 33:23man, and has the flashback here that this is arguably the most relatable moment
- 33:29in the history of the Simpsons. I think with that, it'll happen to
- 33:30you. Oh, you'll make me feel like dancing. I want to dance
- 33:36a mat of way. What the hell are you two doing? That's cold
- 33:38rocking out. You wouldn't understand dead You're not with it. I used to
- 33:44be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm
- 33:47with, isn't it? And what's it? Seems weird and scary to me.
- 33:52It'll happen to you. Everyone will experience this in their life, and
- 33:57I just don't think it can be sort of summed up in words anymore.
- 34:00Then what happens in this moment? Yeah, I think I might have been
- 34:02mixing up this and Buzz Colder as well, because there is this. Is
- 34:06there a similar thing with buzz Coler No, I don't know about buzz coll
- 34:08Oh. Grandpa tries to be Yeah, he tries to be with it and
- 34:13he's like, uh, he tries to like I'm cool and he's running a
- 34:17bike and he falls off. Maybe he also drinks buzz. The bubbles are
- 34:21killing. This is a different This is completely level, but just let us
- 34:24break it down. I used to be with it, but then they change
- 34:27what it was like that that then they changed what it was. Now what
- 34:30I'm with, isn't it? And what it is? Weird and scary?
- 34:32To me? It's like that is just life. You can't say anything just
- 34:37changing what it was. Whoever wrote that one line is a genius. I
- 34:42absolutely love that. But of course, you know, being young and dumb,
- 34:45we're gonna rock on Forever. I also appreciated the fact that they're singing
- 34:49Leo Sayer, but we also get the I think actually we have skipped ahead
- 34:57a bit first, be before that they'll be a second basement Bill. What
- 35:00I really appreciated the most about this was the animation of the strobe blinding being
- 35:04used to full effect here, of him getting closer and closer and then nope,
- 35:08just coming to further, further and further back to the start again.
- 35:12Beautiful animation. Yeah, it's great when Yeah, there used to be sort
- 35:15of terrific visual gags like this as well. Yeah, so so great.
- 35:20So now this is what we get that it'll happen to you, And we
- 35:22get the transition to him looking in the mirror saying forever forever. Now he's
- 35:25fat, bold, and feeling like he's he's out of touch, he tells
- 35:29Marjor he feels old and march so much. Music store has always been crazy
- 35:32to me. Music's none of my business. I feel like I was kind
- 35:37of in this moment recently where it's like I'm sending to get out of this
- 35:40rut. I felt like just doing the same shit over and over again.
- 35:44Wake Up, here's the school do the same shows. That's why we're starting
- 35:46the pilot podcast something fresh, shaking it up a bit, and he needs
- 35:50to get out of this rut. So Marge says, you need to include
- 35:52button Lisa, if you do this please, So then we cut to the
- 35:54next day and he's driving to pick up the kids, but you straight past
- 35:58millhouse. My Mom'll got me the other end. You know what's great about
- 36:02that is that they didn't have to set it up previously. It's just you
- 36:06can imagine what the conversation will you smell? And they find the tickets in
- 36:13the glove box easy authenticator spots and Home is very, very excited, and
- 36:16they're kind of like, okay, well we're gonna go to Lolla Losers.
- 36:20So is it yes, because it's got Homo Pollo. It's actually Lola's Hulla
- 36:28Balooes. It's so confusi. But they're on their way to Capital City,
- 36:30which is thirty miles away. So they arrived though. You get a free
- 36:34nose piercing with every admission, and it's like Woodstock with advertisements everywhere and tons
- 36:38of security guards and they throw out Mackey throw at everything, which apparently was
- 36:42something that one of the writers experience when you went the threat to throw at
- 36:45his homemade make allure, but yeah, throw it at the cameras, any
- 36:49forms of ID throw them in the bin, please Generation X. They may
- 36:52be show, but at least that tolerant and respect all people. And we
- 36:55get the freak Show, and we introduced to Cypress Hill and they're about to
- 37:00sing this one of those songs, but there's a lost child within an hour
- 37:02and become a property of Blockbuster Entertainment. Blockbuster yeah, gone, yeah,
- 37:07yeah, that was that what they were referring to, was that Blockbuster Entertainment.
- 37:10Yes, but then smells he smells something his jacket. There was another
- 37:16gag they used on The Simpsons. I believe that smells like the teacher's room.
- 37:19Is that? Yeah, similar kind of vibe hom and then buys his
- 37:22restafarian hat. Did karma karma karma? Oh? I get it. The
- 37:30way that guy says karma always annoyed me. I'm like, I know what
- 37:34it is is karma karma And I'm like, funk off, you didn't do
- 37:38anything. I'm already paying these. You get to a festival, prices are
- 37:43already through the ring. Oh they get it. Tips at a festival,
- 37:45completely extortionate. Yeah, so kids say you can't wear that, but he's
- 37:49too cool for this planet. Badge a strut, which was from what we're
- 37:52saying, fabulous fairy Freak Brothers. I don't think is an our Crumb cartoon.
- 37:55Was that a take off of when they did the Itching Scrutchy cartoon for
- 37:58adults? Was that what that was? Yeah, a similar vibe with him
- 38:00walking I'm cool baby. Yeah, well I don't have Chrumin's responsible. Oh
- 38:06no, that's rough. Back in Fritz the Cat, which the cat was
- 38:08what it was? Yeah, Like the tagline says it's X rated and animated,
- 38:15let the kids watch it. What was the X rated Muppets? Was
- 38:19it the Mupets or something that feebles feebles Peter Jackson, Yeah, I'm hiring
- 38:23it as a kid, going, oh my, your video store clerk was
- 38:30derelict in his duty that day. Yes, he was a good dude.
- 38:35You high species. The video store guy, Chris absolute legend because whenever I
- 38:40would hire a movie that I knew Mum wouldn't let me. I put it
- 38:44in the middle of the pile and you see Chris looking at you and go,
- 38:46look at me. Put it through and I'm like, what a what
- 38:50a lord? He knew all I was supposed to be watching this, but
- 38:52He's like, fucking go for it. This is what Generation X for all
- 38:55Man. You could make a make a decent living being a goddamn video They
- 39:00were the coolest people in the world to me. People that for me as
- 39:02a kid was the dream. It was on a video store and a books
- 39:07on a record store, yeah, a rental store. Just felt like you
- 39:10were the coolest person in the world to me because you knew all about the
- 39:14movies. You just legends. You know you didn't. You wouldn't necessarily had
- 39:20to make a huge living. But I can make my rent and you know
- 39:23you bag at the end of the week. I'm happy. And I would
- 39:25go there and I would hang out like an hour. You didn't tell me
- 39:28to leave. You just you'd make small small talk with me. Yeah,
- 39:30and you know you could get your own term. Just reading the back of
- 39:34the covers, Oh my god, what a time. Look at this cover
- 39:37for Kreeberzoids. I really want to go check out video Land that displayed yesterday
- 39:43was up in Melbourne where if you haven't if you live in near Melbourne,
- 39:45in Australia check out video Land. So basically the guy for an exhibition has
- 39:52the theme is joy and he says the most joyous thing for him was video
- 39:55stores and the feeling of being in a video store, and his got like
- 40:00hundreds. It looks like a video stores video land. It's a custom car
- 40:02park, carpet. Sorry, posters on the wall, box old sr T
- 40:08TVs. The old boxing, whatever it is with with commercials playing, it's
- 40:13just I want to go there, I want to go. What do you
- 40:15What would you say is the smell of a video store? What's the one?
- 40:17What's the smell for you? How would you define the smell? Because
- 40:22you can smell it when you think of a videos, so you can smell
- 40:23it, But how would you describe the smell of a video It's kind of
- 40:25it's kind of neutral with a slight well I mean plastic, yeah, covers,
- 40:31slightly disinfectant. Yeah, the tapes. Yeah, it's an inter requestion
- 40:38because I think if you're talking about to say, like a video easy or
- 40:42a Blockbuster. Yeah, it's a little more clinical and a little more corporate.
- 40:46But yeah, indie ones are a bit so as like a wardrobe.
- 40:50Yeah, it's a little a little musty, yeah, maybe a sort of
- 40:52a slight tinger of cigarette smoke because someone's gone out back for a dark couple
- 40:57of faded posters on the wall. Correct, what a time? What?
- 41:04But yes, So they're at there at the festival and Home is now being
- 41:07called a narc hate crime, hate crime, and he gets tossed out.
- 41:09Then it's a Smashing Pumpkins playing your song that you love playing zero, and
- 41:15the teens are dancing in their zombie dance that they're enjoying themselves, maybe ablee,
- 41:19but they're really getting to the crowd home that doesn't understand. Why am
- 41:22I cool? I don't understand. Maybe I just am He's lost, now
- 41:24kicks the balloon gun pick Peter Friendom's pig comes out, boom, hits him
- 41:28in the guts and I was just him of the guts. Now it does.
- 41:31They were hitting the guts and he's okay if I'm like, oh my
- 41:32god, I can't believe it. And then the guy with the pageant of
- 41:35the transmandine the fiction probably not a shout out or an unexpected connection, but
- 41:43I don't go. Oh, it's a bit sort of mored Flanders vibes,
- 41:47which oh yeah, that came after this of course. Yeah, yeah,
- 41:50yep, But so he wants having to be that I want you to be
- 41:53that fatso and he wants him to get shot with the cannon. Marge is
- 41:57not impressed at all. So I don't think I always this here again.
- 42:02So you want to go on tour with a traveling freak show. I don't
- 42:07think I have a choice, March. Of course I'll have a choice.
- 42:09How do you figure you don't have to join a freak show just because the
- 42:13opportunity came along, you know, our March. In some ways you and
- 42:16I are very different people. I don't remember this scene, but it was
- 42:21just so funny. It says like I don't have of course you do.
- 42:23In some way, you and I, it's very different people love that.
- 42:27Yeah when you that strikes me as like the best possible version of like a
- 42:30Homer and Marge's not disagreement, not fighting. Yeah, or there weree times
- 42:36when home is kind of like I've got to do this, yeah, actively
- 42:38sort of loathing towards March though, when she's when when they're not on the
- 42:42same page, Yeah, and this like sometimes we just very feel like we're
- 42:45very different people. I like it when he's sort of snooty or he feels
- 42:52like he's got the upper hand in the way. It's also a good way
- 42:53of just justifying why he's going to do this as well, I've got to
- 42:57do it, and it's true. Ninety six get invited to go on is
- 43:01traveling Lola Blues and Festival? You're doing it? Oh god? Yeah.
- 43:05So now we're at the at Raleigh Durham. I believe it's pronounced sure at
- 43:09Rally Rally Rally Durham. Yeah, at a new event for Lola Bloeser.
- 43:15It's a Holod Blueser. Sorry, homers into it, but you know,
- 43:17he's very, very nervous. Is everybody good? And he gets shot and
- 43:22we get the famous slow mo of the cannon hitting the man. Yeah.
- 43:25Now this is a bit of a pop culture I think the name of the
- 43:29actual guy Frank Marshall. Let's look it up. There will be references on
- 43:34the cutter references. So yeah, Frank cannon Ball, Richard's Richards. Yes.
- 43:37Now, I was wondering where i'd seen that picture, and of course
- 43:40it's been around river, but it was I think the main reason I remember
- 43:44it. It was on the cover of Van Halen three. Oh okay was
- 43:47it really yeah? Released in nineteen ninety eight. Rightly, by the way,
- 43:50Dazing Confused was the van and the opening album version of Prince's song nine
- 43:54Times in nine was where They're talking shoes is based on Okay, yeah,
- 43:58so yeah, so he's been shot with the cannon everyone thinks. Everyone's a
- 44:00huge fan of it. I don't know if I could wash this, could
- 44:01you wash this the guy getting shot with the cannon ball, I'll be like,
- 44:05I don't know, I'm like, ugh, this has thezars are written
- 44:07all over it does certainly, and the fact that they've gone from the inflatable
- 44:12pig to an actual cannonball, I don't know. But then, like I
- 44:15said, I we went we went crazy for the gym Rows circus and that
- 44:19was just, you know, some pretty gross stuff. Yeah, okay,
- 44:22Well he signs the cannon ball for the kid. He's famous. Now does
- 44:24they stay in school or something something like that. But Billy Corgan now introduced
- 44:28him smiff and we get the iconic smiling politely. Yeah. I got to
- 44:31think you're gloomy music stop my kids from jimming or a future they can't possibly
- 44:36provide see now this, that's that's great. That feels as fresh as tomorrow.
- 44:39It really does, doesn't it. I think things just keep getting more
- 44:45and more expensive. Well, our wages go up, but shit always feels
- 44:47like it's just getting more and more expensive, doesn't it. Absolutely, But
- 44:50for him to say this in ninety six, yeah, oh wait a minute,
- 44:53it's still relevant in twenty four yep. But then reads the letter from
- 44:58home A home is telling detailing his his his trip away, and they're driving
- 45:00on the bus. They go to Cleveland, Cincinnati, turn around and don't
- 45:04go to either of them. Sometimes you get a message cross as well.
- 45:07He's got no litter written on his stomach. Then he's tacking in to the
- 45:09spirit of the self destruction, which is the rock and roll lifestyle. And
- 45:14Astragon behind the bus with Fryan Pansy frying pans for skis. Oh, here
- 45:17comes that cannon ball guy. He's cool, you mean, sarcastic, dude,
- 45:23I don't even know anymore. That's a pretty good way of summing up
- 45:27this generation pretty much. I think. I don't think you know anymore.
- 45:30I think, yeah, even back in ninety six, when being a generation
- 45:34extra, I was like, yeah, they got out number is they don't
- 45:36trust anyone over thirty or twenty. It's not trusting anyone over thirty, which
- 45:39was very much as hippies. And then Peter Frampton, Now what was with
- 45:44the I know they explained the commentary. I forgot to watch it. With
- 45:45the commentary, he does the weird dance as he gets he strums the catan
- 45:49does like the yeah, I don't know, it's a weird thing. Yeah,
- 45:52I know there is a thing. Nan I would have discussed it when
- 45:53I did the review years ago, but anyway, tuned into that one may
- 45:57yeah, smashing pumpkins. Then about Springfield, like what's it like? And
- 46:01you know they all mentioned how that they were all freaks as well. You
- 46:05know, she's part of the Audio Visual Club. And Home was like I
- 46:07got kicked out because my political leads and I'm slim projectives home and drix the
- 46:12beer though, and his stomach starts making weird sounds and they're not, like,
- 46:15that's not right. So I'm gonna look after You're gonna send you to
- 46:17a vet. Then the vet basically says, you know, if you keep
- 46:22doing this, you're going to die, and Home's like not not have any
- 46:24man by the way got any messages for Jimy Hendrix up your dog Hendrix.
- 46:29So Bart is now asking questions to Homer. Homan doesn't really know why he
- 46:32could comes back home new because they've done in the Springfield shown next, and
- 46:36turns out for a report the person I admired the most. It was a
- 46:38very sweet moment, was like, but then he eats the pie and he's
- 46:42getting the stomach sounds as well. It's almost like, Okay, I'm now
- 46:45the person that my son admires the most. So Cash twenty two. He
- 46:47loves me because I'm doing this, but also I want to be around for
- 46:51him if I do this, It's like, what do I do? What's
- 46:52the best decision here? At what cost? Yeah, And he makes the
- 46:55right decision in the end, obviously be rare for his family. But they
- 46:58all arrive at the fairgrounds. Homer is now the pride of Springfield. He's
- 47:00got the billboard there. Marge is really excited. Last time she was backstage
- 47:05went but with his pants at the Christmas play and be real Cypress Hill.
- 47:08This is where we get the iconic London Symphony Orchestra. This episode had a
- 47:13lot of iconic moments. Yeah, it's so so great. But yeah,
- 47:16possibly while high Cypress Hill, look in your direction and as you were saying
- 47:21earlier, the whole let's go for it. What not? Hey man,
- 47:27we order an orchestra? What's up with this orchestra? Where'd orchestra come from?
- 47:30I don't know, man, I didn't tell me about this. Man
- 47:34do something? Oh yeah, yeah, we think we did. Uh do
- 47:37you know what's saying in the brain? We mostly no classical, but we
- 47:43could give it a shot. Marges. Now, this, I like,
- 47:59is the perfect way to some up that that music. I think I just
- 48:00thought it was sounded so it was like you never picked these two things to
- 48:04blend together like that. But they there's magic Peter Frampton know he's playing his
- 48:09songs and oh man, that guy's guitar is talking, and my shoes are
- 48:13talking too, And I don't like the apparently the video clip for ninty nine
- 48:15or something. I don't know. Yeah, I've been I don't to consider
- 48:19themself a bit of a Prince fan, but I'm not sure I remember that.
- 48:21I mean from I don't know if it's from the song so much as
- 48:22the album nineteen ninety nine. It says here so when was it? When
- 48:25was the album? So it says here Otto's drug induice hallucination of his Talking
- 48:30Shoes is based on the opening of the album version of Prince's song nineteen ninety
- 48:35nine, Oh I think that. Yeah, it doesn't sound with don't worry
- 48:39everything is oh that bit? Yes, yeah, okay, it's a bit
- 48:44of a long bird. I really I wouldn't have made that connection if I
- 48:45hadn't really got Wikipedia, which never lies. Of course not. But this
- 48:51is where the pet doesn't work, because it's just I was fucked it up.
- 48:57But before that we actually get Burns mentioned that he's bought Ticketmaster surcharges again
- 49:00relevant of course we discussed recently. It's like, what is with these surcharges?
- 49:06That the processing fee? And I'm like, but I'm not dealing with
- 49:09the human here. Why am I paying a processing fee? Yeah, isn't
- 49:14technology meant to make it? You've you've built your website, you've paid it
- 49:17off, it's been the same website for a decade plus. Now you're not
- 49:21paying anything else to make the infrastructure any better. Why am I paying a
- 49:23processing fee? Going on a booking fee? What if I want to if
- 49:28I want to book online, I've got to pay a nextra ten percent or
- 49:30something. But if I go to the cinema, speak to a human being,
- 49:32no booking fee, just whatever. And I had some for the cinema.
- 49:37Tell me was because you get the book where your seats are? And
- 49:38I'm like, no, no, no no, because I went there and
- 49:43she said, she turned the screen and said which seats would you like?
- 49:45And I'm like, so I can actually book my seats here as well?
- 49:47What the hell is the booking fee for? By the way, you will
- 49:51not see it, but Dano did a very nice fingerwag need you style.
- 49:57But this is where Peter Frampton's had his It doesn't work. The cyper Seals
- 50:00stole his orchestra. I'm like, that's a great little buttons out game.
- 50:04And then so rating is cooler. You' don't gonna need all that watermelon.
- 50:08Mister franp I they call him. Mister Frampton is the old guy on campus.
- 50:13But it's our time for Homer, the man who embodies everything about rock
- 50:15and roll except the music. And Milu what Homer says? Okay, Homer,
- 50:20don't feel the reaper. Maybe I doe remember I know, Milhouse says,
- 50:22I used to a couple of that guy Marge is really worried though kind
- 50:25of cannon the design to hurt, design to hurt. It reminds me very
- 50:30similar vibe to when he's in the boxing ring. Uh what does she yell
- 50:35at? Though? Because I know Homer says you gotta fight back. I
- 50:37was like that bull cactus is right, is right. But the family they're
- 50:42putting on the brave face for Homer, I don't let's not see him,
- 50:44let's not let him see us worry, but says you're the coolest that alive.
- 50:47Everyone's incredibly nervous or ale watching and Homer jumps out of the way,
- 50:51which was the right decision. Then this is where he says that I thought
- 50:53I didn't have enough of destruction. All I wanted was the club Sandwich sonic
- 50:59youth. Then say your hold, loser, it's not about the freaks,
- 51:00It's about the music, the advertising, youth orientated product placing placement, and
- 51:05get nicely toasted the manager that the manager that expects Home's letter of resignation to
- 51:12end his office at the end of the day, which is the hood of
- 51:14his car. Homer then says, you know, I can't I'm sorry,
- 51:16Billy, I just can't set share your bleak world view. I've got too
- 51:22much to live for. But Billy say, I'm just gonna have to settle
- 51:25for. What is it my legions of fans, millions of dollars, and
- 51:30and my youth. Ye yes, let's go, fir coat, I want
- 51:32to walk in humid off. Apparently Billy Corgan did like really good impersonations of
- 51:37Homer and marg Julie. Okay, said Wrestling Company, I know the n
- 51:40w WA. It's so bizarre. And the family are now driving home and
- 51:46well, I guess being a family is more important than being cool, and
- 51:50they're just trying to say it was a hip to be square, that they're
- 51:52being uncool, and the family, the kids are trying to explain, you're
- 51:55not cool, and it's not okay. Me not caring that I'm not cool
- 51:59makes me cool? Right? No? What does make me cool? Maybe
- 52:01if you're truly cool, you don't need to be told that you're cool.
- 52:05Of course you do. How is it? You know? It's like that
- 52:07conversation to me is a lot of the epitome of no one actually knows what
- 52:10cool is? The eternal quandary, Yes, like, how do you be
- 52:14called nobody knows you just some people are call some people aren't. But also,
- 52:16you can't call yourself cool, no, No, being cool is like
- 52:21being tough or being a lady. If you need to say you're you're not.
- 52:23If you need to say you're the best, you're probably not. Well
- 52:27the quote was it Ti in Taiwan Lanister, He's like, any man who
- 52:31has to call himself king is no true king. Yes, So then we
- 52:36get the closing credit, So I'm like Dando, who's just the king doing
- 52:38their zombie dance sort of just deep. Yeah, is really getting to them,
- 52:42but they're not really doing anything different. And that's just the end of
- 52:45Homer Palooza, an episode that I knew was iconic but forgot to how many
- 52:49iconic moments we're in it. It's just so fun iconic and just playing fun,
- 52:52playing and playing funny. Yeah, would you say it was funnier or
- 52:57just fun? What did you like it was pretty funny? Didn't? Yeah?
- 53:00I think yeah, But I think for people at have various stages of
- 53:06I don't know, societal development and the various demographics that we're in, which
- 53:10I think the lot of the writers are probably going through at that point in
- 53:13time as well. Yeah, it's a good time capsule. Yeah, it
- 53:16doesn't feel dated, but it doesn't feel dated because you know everything old is
- 53:20new again and you know, some things just remain. It's forever. It's
- 53:22the story of the forever theme of just being out of touch. Yeah.
- 53:24But yeah, the Quota band that is eternally cool. The song remains the
- 53:29same. I think, yeah, A say that, do they sometimes?
- 53:34But I think this episode I've never appreciated it more. I think I've always
- 53:38liked this episode, but now that I've truly entered that phase of what Home
- 53:42is going through, I think that's how you really truly appreciate this episode and
- 53:45enjoy it for what it is. You used to enjoy it, now you're
- 53:47living now I'll live it and I love it. Yeah. I just thought
- 53:50this episode was fantastic. So that has been our classic review for this monthe
- 53:53you guys enjoyed it. Homer Blueser come back with another classic review next month
- 53:57as well. Also got some season nineteen reviews and some upcoming guest stars as
- 54:00well, which is pretty exciting. Don't forget guys, if you haven't yet
- 54:02checked it out, We've just launched a brand new podcast available every single Friday.

- 54:13and you blew it, It's called TV Launch TV Launch pots So basically go
- 54:20back and we review the pilot episodes of particular TV shows and it's gonna be
- 54:23a lot of fun. And the first episode we recorded this week we recorded
- 54:27today actually as we recorded this one, it is Bob's Burger's, a show
- 54:30is very near and dear to our hearts, and as we still say,
- 54:34we will launch it Bobs Burger's Podcast if we get enough supporters on Patreon so
- 54:37you can do it so for as little as just one single dollar per month,

- 54:43to go back and movies at the pilot, wasn't it. We had an
- 54:44absolute blast doing so. Yeah, and some upcoming shows are gonna be doing
- 54:47this month. We want to keep it a surprise, but let's tease one
- 54:50more. We're gonna be Buffy the vampires Layer. We are indeed, yes,
- 54:52that's gonna be not coming on as well, but every single week it's
- 54:54gonna be doing no animation sitcoms dramas, dramas. You just you don't know
- 54:59what's gonna be coming. It's gonna be a variety of pilot episodes are gonna
- 55:01be a lot of fun because we just thought we do side fellow shows on
- 55:05Patreon, but you're King of the Hill. It's the same show I've and
- 55:07over and it's good, great shows, but we want to switch up a
- 55:09bit, just a bit of variety. Yeah, because I'm a swifty let's
- 55:12shake it up a little bit. Yeah. And again, it's gonna be
- 55:14some shows we watched the pilot of that we've never actually seen the show.
- 55:16I think I feel like those pilot reviews will be genuinely the best ones because
- 55:20we don't know what's coming. They will be completely uninformed and thoroughly entertained.
