- 1:26Speaker 1: for the team's website. Here's a snippet of Ted Carris's
- 1:30Speaker 1: micd up segment following the Thursday night win over Pittsburgh.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Let's go, let's go, hud huddle, huddle, hudd up.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Hey, no one relaxes from session.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Me and you mimsy, Me you moby, Me and you mimsy.
- 1:47Speaker 1: The kick is off. Yeah, good, good, great job.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Great job.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I love you, man, I love I love you.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I love you too, man.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Great job, Scott Riach job, great job, matters. Let's finish
- 2:00Speaker 3: you saw me.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'm not there yet. Yeah yeah. That Ted talk was
- 2:10Speaker 1: highly amusing, and last week Joe Flacco and t Higgins
- 2:14Speaker 1: were both miked up in the game against the Jets,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and their three and a half minute segment is outstanding.
- 2:21Speaker 1: The Bengals have been doing these videos for years, but
- 2:23Speaker 1: I think they've been better than ever this season. You
- 2:26Speaker 1: can watch all of them by going to Bengals dot com,
- 2:30Speaker 1: clicking video, and then clicking miked up. Now let's get
- 2:35Speaker 1: to my first guest. The Bengals offensive line has taken
- 2:39Speaker 1: a share of criticism in recent years, so how about
- 2:41Speaker 1: giving credit when credits due. In the last two weeks,
- 2:45Speaker 1: Cincinnati has averaged thirty five and a half points and
- 2:49Speaker 1: more than four hundred and thirty yards of offense. And
- 2:52Speaker 1: it hasn't just been Joe Flacco to Jamar Chase, the
- 2:56Speaker 1: Bengals have averaged more than one hundred and sixty rushing
- 2:59Speaker 1: yards in the last two weeks while surrendering a total
- 3:02Speaker 1: of three sacks. That success begins up front, and I
- 3:07Speaker 1: discussed it this week with offensive line coach Scott Peters. Scott,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you are not much older than your quarterback Joe Flack.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What's impressed you since he arrived three weeks ago. Well,
- 3:17Speaker 1: part of it's I mean that I'm not that much
- 3:18Speaker 1: older than him.
- 3:19Speaker 5: I mean for a guy to come in and do
- 3:21Speaker 5: what he's been able to do to help our team
- 3:24Speaker 5: is impressive. I've seen it before when I was in Cleveland.
- 3:26Speaker 5: He joined us late in the year and really helped
- 3:29Speaker 5: the team. Gave us a boost. And the thing that's
- 3:31Speaker 5: most impressive is that he can just walk in with calmness,
- 3:34Speaker 5: coolness and just you know, learn a new system and
- 3:38Speaker 5: be able to go out there and play ball at.
- 3:40Speaker 1: A high level.
- 3:42Speaker 5: It's a lot of confidence for the unit. And I think,
- 3:45Speaker 5: you know, he's obviously done a good job for us
- 3:47Speaker 5: so far.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He's a pocket passer. He's not going to be running
- 3:50Speaker 1: around a lot back there at age forty, but he's
- 3:53Speaker 1: only been sacked four times so far in three games.
- 3:56Speaker 1: How his Joe, even with limited mobility at this stage,
- 4:00Speaker 1: help the offensive line.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Well, I think every line coach will tell you it's
- 4:03Speaker 5: probably getting the ball out on time, but that always helps.
- 4:06Speaker 5: But I think, you know, being able to manage a
- 4:08Speaker 5: run game two, you know, get the run game up
- 4:10Speaker 5: and going and helping us there making the right checks
- 4:13Speaker 5: and things like that. But yeah, it's all the above.
- 4:17Speaker 5: I think there's a lot of factors that play into that.
- 4:18Speaker 5: But we're we're excited about, you know, the direction.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Let's talk about the run game. Two weeks ago, one
- 4:24Speaker 1: hundred and forty two yards against Pittsburgh. Last week one
- 4:27Speaker 1: against the Jets, you've averaged seven yards per run during
- 4:31Speaker 1: that two game stretch.
- 4:32Speaker 5: What changed, you know, I think it's it's kind of
- 4:35Speaker 5: getting you know, the run game is a something that
- 4:38Speaker 5: you got to develop. And I think it's combination blocks,
- 4:40Speaker 5: it's phasing, timing the backs, understanding how we're blocking, and
- 4:45Speaker 5: their vision. I think they did an incredible job of
- 4:47Speaker 5: playing off of us and you know, the guys that
- 4:50Speaker 5: you know, you get new people in there, and I
- 4:52Speaker 5: think as far as the line goes, just the way
- 4:54Speaker 5: we want our combinations run, the where our blocking structures
- 4:57Speaker 5: is run, and again just kind of repetition. I think,
- 5:00Speaker 5: you know, obviously starting the year out with Joe in there, Burrow,
- 5:04Speaker 5: you're you know, you're going to throw the ball a lot.
- 5:06Speaker 5: So it's feeding the running game. It's like you got
- 5:08Speaker 5: to feed it for it to grow. And I think
- 5:09Speaker 5: that's part of it. But no, I think the guys
- 5:12Speaker 5: bought in and we've done a nice job and played
- 5:14Speaker 5: hard and I think they take great pride in it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: We're visiting the offensive line, Kirk Scott Peters. Right now,
- 5:19Speaker 1: You're starting lineup includes a twenty three year old and
- 5:21Speaker 1: his second year at right tackle and a couple of
- 5:23Speaker 1: rookies at the guard positions. What are the biggest challenges
- 5:26Speaker 1: that go with inexperience.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Up front, it's the getting past the inexperience because at
- 5:31Speaker 5: some point we expect them to be experienced. You know,
- 5:33Speaker 5: you got to take that each each measure you got
- 5:36Speaker 5: to you know, you got to be able to leave
- 5:37Speaker 5: each game with you know something, you know, an upgrade
- 5:40Speaker 5: and knowledge upgrade to be able to take each lesson
- 5:43Speaker 5: as they come. So then the next time you see it.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Because you see a lot of things in this league,
- 5:47Speaker 5: but really you start to see patterns and so when
- 5:49Speaker 5: the players start to grow, that's when you start to
- 5:51Speaker 5: see results in success. So not every day is a
- 5:53Speaker 5: new day, and I think that's what's challenging, is getting
- 5:56Speaker 5: that off the ground where guys truly can grow and
- 5:59Speaker 5: you want to see those players, young players in particular,
- 6:01Speaker 5: to us end, that's really what makes a difference, where
- 6:04Speaker 5: where they get the exposure and the experience, and that's
- 6:06Speaker 5: really how players do improve is getting experience in the game.
- 6:10Speaker 5: It's a challenge for them, and I think that they've
- 6:13Speaker 5: done a nice job so far, and we expect them
- 6:14Speaker 5: to continue to grow. That's the expectation and we hope
- 6:17Speaker 5: they do that.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I was talking to Ted Carriss last week, and he
- 6:20Speaker 1: said that he thinks the three young guys Mims, Delan
- 6:23Speaker 1: Fairchild and Jalen Rivers could start together on this offensive
- 6:28Speaker 1: line for ten years, like it's the nucleus of a
- 6:31Speaker 1: really good offensive line. Are you seeing signs that that
- 6:35Speaker 1: could be the case.
- 6:36Speaker 5: You know, you'd love that, You'd love that. I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 5: I think that's what every line dreams of is. You
- 6:40Speaker 5: want continuity. And those three men have have done everything
- 6:44Speaker 5: we've asked of them, and again there's there's learning curve,
- 6:46Speaker 5: but yeah, that would be that would be exceptional because
- 6:49Speaker 5: they're good people. They're good, you know, good men, they're
- 6:52Speaker 5: smart guys, they're they're tough, they're physically capable, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 5: getting the exposure and the comfortability there together itself to success.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I mean, you really want continuity at the line position,
- 7:03Speaker 5: and I think that would be great if those guys
- 7:05Speaker 5: were able to play that along together. It's not not
- 7:07Speaker 5: very common these days in this in this realm in
- 7:09Speaker 5: the NFL, but but that certainly would be an awesome thing.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I asked you about a Marius Mims during training camp.
- 7:14Speaker 1: You said the following quote, you have to be greedy
- 7:17Speaker 1: about how good you want to be. It's not enough
- 7:19Speaker 1: to block people, you have to dominate them. I know
- 7:22Speaker 1: you've said the same thing to him. Do you see
- 7:24Speaker 1: him developing that mindset?
- 7:26Speaker 4: You do?
- 7:27Speaker 5: And and that's it. That doesn't happen immediately either overnight.
- 7:29Speaker 5: And I think for him it's been incremental to growth.
- 7:32Speaker 5: And the last game excited us. You know, we see
- 7:35Speaker 5: one one step more. He's starting to get that greed
- 7:37Speaker 5: and that hunger to that can really be really good
- 7:40Speaker 5: at this, you know, And and he can be. And
- 7:42Speaker 5: I think you know what you've seen early on as
- 7:44Speaker 5: a guy that's raw, that you know, didn't play a
- 7:46Speaker 5: ton in college, came here, played a little bit. Last year,
- 7:49Speaker 5: played you know, he played with an injury and and
- 7:51Speaker 5: you know his development was probably stunted that way. But
- 7:53Speaker 5: I think what he's done is, uh, he's he's just
- 7:56Speaker 5: continually ascended with experience. And then when you get a
- 7:59Speaker 5: chance to go out there against the top rushers in
- 8:01Speaker 5: the league and and you've played well and then you
- 8:03Speaker 5: see mistakes that you made, He's he's taken to the
- 8:05Speaker 5: to the you know, the classroom and on the field,
- 8:07Speaker 5: he's working extra with me. And so yeah, I think
- 8:10Speaker 5: he's got all the potential to be the best, and
- 8:14Speaker 5: and you see that spark in his eye. I think
- 8:16Speaker 5: a lot of it's about the confidence that you need
- 8:19Speaker 5: to feel like you can truly.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Dominate in this game. And I think he sees it.
- 8:23Speaker 5: It's possibility for him.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Your techniques are a little bit different from what most
- 8:27Speaker 1: of these guys have done before. Did they embrace it
- 8:30Speaker 1: right away or is there a little bit of reluctance
- 8:33Speaker 1: to change when you've made it to the highest level
- 8:35Speaker 1: doing things one way.
- 8:37Speaker 5: I don't know that they've like outwardly embraced it or
- 8:40Speaker 5: not embraced it. I think that they've all attempted to
- 8:43Speaker 5: do it early on. I think the issue is when
- 8:45Speaker 5: you when you get certain, you know you have to
- 8:47Speaker 5: build movement patterns in the body. So what's happened is
- 8:50Speaker 5: you understand that takes some time, and you get guys
- 8:53Speaker 5: that have done it successfully at a high level for
- 8:55Speaker 5: a long time. It's even harder yet for those guys.
- 8:57Speaker 5: And I got to say, like, like Ted Carris has
- 9:00Speaker 5: has done an exceptional job for someone that has played
- 9:02Speaker 5: this many games in his life, come in and here's
- 9:05Speaker 5: a new coach tell him to do things just a
- 9:06Speaker 5: little differently, and sometimes it's quite different from what he's
- 9:10Speaker 5: done in the past, and that takes a lot of
- 9:12Speaker 5: reps into his credit. He's really worked hard at it
- 9:15Speaker 5: and he's embraced it and he's seeing results with it.
- 9:17Speaker 5: So it's been really positive that way. And I think
- 9:20Speaker 5: it's just like anything, it's not so much that that
- 9:23Speaker 5: guys reject or embrace. It's more about just what the
- 9:26Speaker 5: unconscious body will do and that just takes time to
- 9:28Speaker 5: time and repetition.
- 9:30Speaker 1: A couple more questions for Scott Peters. You were an
- 9:32Speaker 1: NFL player for eight years. I'm sure there were times
- 9:35Speaker 1: where one side of the ball performed better than the other.
- 9:38Speaker 1: When that happens, how do you avoid whitting fingers? Essentially?
- 9:43Speaker 5: Well, I reminded our guys, you know, it wasn't too
- 9:45Speaker 5: long ago when we were the ones that weren't playing
- 9:48Speaker 5: up to our standard, and we got to be there
- 9:50Speaker 5: to support our team because it's a team game, so
- 9:52Speaker 5: it can't do it without everybody, and our guys are
- 9:54Speaker 5: fully aware of that.
- 9:55Speaker 6: That's what they.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Are their leadership, and that's what we expect of our players.
- 10:00Speaker 7: You know.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Good, We have a really good room of guys and
- 10:03Speaker 5: it takes a whole team to win, so as frustrating
- 10:06Speaker 5: as it might be, and it was very frustrating to
- 10:09Speaker 5: lose the game, it's a team effort and where you know,
- 10:12Speaker 5: and it's always going to be the case in football,
- 10:14Speaker 5: So we just need some group to step up if
- 10:16Speaker 5: somebody's not playing well or not it didn't have a
- 10:19Speaker 5: good performance day. It's a team that makes this happen.
- 10:21Speaker 5: So our guys are fully embraced of the defense and
- 10:25Speaker 5: the players on that side of the ball because it's
- 10:27Speaker 5: going to take all of.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Us to do it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You face the Bears this week. They've had some issues
- 10:31Speaker 1: stopping the run. They're giving up more than one hundred
- 10:33Speaker 1: and forty rushing yards per game. After what you've done
- 10:36Speaker 1: the last two weeks, how important is the running game
- 10:38Speaker 1: against Chicago?
- 10:40Speaker 5: Well, it's always important. You know, when you have great
- 10:42Speaker 5: receivers like we do and a good quarterback that's able
- 10:45Speaker 5: to distribute the ball, you know, you want to be
- 10:47Speaker 5: a balanced outfit, and when you can run the ball effectively,
- 10:50Speaker 5: it really opens you up to a lot of good possibility.
- 10:53Speaker 5: So of course we're putting a lot of premium on
- 10:55Speaker 5: every week. You know, it's always the case, nothing's really
- 10:58Speaker 5: changed from that perspective. It's just a matter of us
- 11:01Speaker 5: going out and executing. And each week is different based
- 11:04Speaker 5: on the opponent you face and they're the problems that
- 11:06Speaker 5: they present. But certainly certainly is an emphasis, like I said,
- 11:10Speaker 5: every week. So hopefully we're able to get that done
- 11:12Speaker 5: this week.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Appreciate your time, best of luck against the Bears.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Appreciate it. Thank you.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I began my interview with Scott by asking him about
- 11:19Speaker 1: Joe Flaco and as you probably know, Joe Calm's status
- 11:23Speaker 1: is a bit up in the air this week after
- 11:25Speaker 1: he sprained his shoulder against the Jets. Here's Zach Taylor.
- 11:29Speaker 6: He wants to play in the game, and so kudos
- 11:31Speaker 6: to him. Man, he's been here three weeks. He wants
- 11:34Speaker 6: to play. He's speaking for him, but that's what he's
- 11:36Speaker 6: told me. We'll have to work through the week to
- 11:38Speaker 6: see if that's that's able to do that. It's a
- 11:40Speaker 6: throwing shoulder, it's painful, but I mean, call the guy
- 11:45Speaker 6: who wants to do that, wants to get out there
- 11:47Speaker 6: and play with something like that. Credit to him. So
- 11:50Speaker 6: we'll go through the week and see what it ends
- 11:52Speaker 6: up and have Jake ready to go to and just
- 11:55Speaker 6: see how it plays out for him to come in,
- 11:57Speaker 6: and it would be easy to make a decision that
- 11:59Speaker 6: there's no way, you know, I just I've got ac joint.
- 12:02Speaker 6: We got a bye week next week. Let's just let
- 12:04Speaker 6: this think. Heel up and that has not been the
- 12:05Speaker 6: communication he's given to me at all.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Now.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Ultimately he may not be able to play. We may
- 12:09Speaker 6: make that decision, but for him just to want to
- 12:12Speaker 6: put it out there for our team himself. Like you
- 12:15Speaker 6: said before, he's just a football player. That's what he does.
- 12:18Speaker 6: That certainly goes along with me.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Flacco is limited at practice on Thursday. If he can't
- 12:23Speaker 1: play against the Bears, Jake Browning will start in Former
- 12:27Speaker 1: Saint Xavier High school quarterback Sean Clifford will move up
- 12:30Speaker 1: from the practice squad to be the backup. Sunday's game
- 12:34Speaker 1: will be televised by CBS, and the announcers will be
- 12:37Speaker 1: the same as last week. I caught up with one
- 12:40Speaker 1: of them to discuss the loss to the Jets and
- 12:43Speaker 1: this week's game against the Bears, but the second straight week,
- 12:47Speaker 1: former NFL safety Adam Archiletto will be in the booth
- 12:50Speaker 1: broadcasting the Bengals game on CBS Adam. Last week's game
- 12:54Speaker 1: was obviously a disappointing one for the Bengals, particularly on defense.
- 12:58Speaker 1: What stood out on that side of the ball as
- 13:01Speaker 1: the Bengals were unable to hold on to their lead
- 13:03Speaker 1: against the Jets.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's a good reminder that as much
- 13:08Speaker 4: as you you think you know and understand these teams
- 13:11Speaker 4: before the game starts, and I'm specifically talking about the
- 13:14Speaker 4: New York Jets, we thought, man, it's going to be
- 13:16Speaker 4: hard for them to generate any offense whatsoever. How are
- 13:19Speaker 4: they going to do it without Wilson and you know,
- 13:21Speaker 4: fields with the situation that he was dealing with. And
- 13:25Speaker 4: then they just score thirty nine points, which is is
- 13:28Speaker 4: pretty crazy. But I just you know, what stands out
- 13:32Speaker 4: obviously is the trend here for Cincinnati's defense and their
- 13:36Speaker 4: inability to stop the run. That's where it all starts.
- 13:41Speaker 4: You know, if you can't stop the run, well forget
- 13:44Speaker 4: about trying to rush the passer and get to the quarterback,
- 13:47Speaker 4: because you're just now all of a sudden, your defense,
- 13:50Speaker 4: you're just thinking about how do we stop the bleeding?
- 13:53Speaker 3: And I credit the Jets.
- 13:55Speaker 4: They came in with a really good game plan, and
- 13:58Speaker 4: for Cincinnati, they got a lot of work to do.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Adam, the Bengals are playing a lot of young guys
- 14:03Speaker 1: on defense, including a couple of rookies that are starting
- 14:05Speaker 1: at linebacker. You started as a rookie for the Rams
- 14:09Speaker 1: back in your day. What was the learning curve like
- 14:12Speaker 1: for you in the NFL?
- 14:15Speaker 4: It was pretty natural for me because I had a
- 14:17Speaker 4: defensive coordinator that really understood how to use me and
- 14:21Speaker 4: play to my strengths, and we kind of saw the
- 14:24Speaker 4: game the same way, so it was a natural transition.
- 14:28Speaker 4: One of the things that I was taught early, especially
- 14:30Speaker 4: with Lovey Smith, is the importance of understanding and knowing
- 14:34Speaker 4: what your keys are, because if you're seeing too much
- 14:38Speaker 4: in the game, you're making the game more complex. Well
- 14:41Speaker 4: then you can't play fast, and it doesn't really matter
- 14:44Speaker 4: how good you are, it doesn't matter what you're ceiling is.
- 14:47Speaker 4: If you're not making fast, decisive decisions based on your keys,
- 14:51Speaker 4: well then you're going to struggle. And certainly the game
- 14:53Speaker 4: now in this day and age, has gotten a little
- 14:55Speaker 4: bit more complex, but to me, it really comes down
- 14:58Speaker 4: to that. And when I watched these young players play,
- 15:03Speaker 4: they're not even getting to a place where they can
- 15:05Speaker 4: use their talent, because in my eyes, they're seeing too much.
- 15:09Speaker 4: They're not playing decisive and these little mistakes are getting
- 15:13Speaker 4: them in bad positions. And now you know that's why
- 15:16Speaker 4: you're seeing some of these big plays against his defense.
- 15:19Speaker 1: You are a defensive back, what do you think of
- 15:21Speaker 1: Bengals cornerback DJ Turner, who's currently leading the NFL and
- 15:25Speaker 1: passes defense.
- 15:27Speaker 4: What I'm seeing as a player that in man coverage
- 15:29Speaker 4: is really starting to trust himself and he's really starting
- 15:32Speaker 4: to play with great patients. He's playing with good leverage.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I mean, that's the key for any defensive back is
- 15:37Speaker 4: understanding where is your help?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Where can I be strong and.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Knowing that, yes, I've got this great speed, so I
- 15:44Speaker 4: can be more patient, especially at the top of the route.
- 15:47Speaker 4: And then I think every cornerback the better you can
- 15:51Speaker 4: go and play the football and you can go take
- 15:54Speaker 4: that ball away and not just be a cover guy.
- 15:56Speaker 3: But really look for the football.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I mean, the interception he had in that Pittsburgh game
- 16:00Speaker 4: was just incredible. So I'm seeing a player that's starting
- 16:03Speaker 4: to believe in his abilities and play at a much
- 16:06Speaker 4: more confident level than we've seen him play.
- 16:09Speaker 1: We are visiting with Adam Archalletta from CBS. I'm sure
- 16:11Speaker 1: in your seven NFL seasons there were times where the
- 16:14Speaker 1: offense played great and the defense struggled and vice versa.
- 16:18Speaker 1: How do you keep the group together when that happens.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I think that's always interesting, because you know, when I
- 16:25Speaker 4: played for the Rams, that was the greatest show on
- 16:28Speaker 4: turf on the other side of the ball, my rookie
- 16:31Speaker 4: year when we went to the Super Bowl. It was
- 16:33Speaker 4: the year in two thousand and one we lost to
- 16:35Speaker 4: the Patriots. We actually played pretty good. It was one
- 16:37Speaker 4: of the best offenses in NFL history, and I think
- 16:39Speaker 4: we were number one and number two in total defense
- 16:41Speaker 4: that season. That wasn't the case in the subsequent years,
- 16:47Speaker 4: and I think it can be hard. I think, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 4: it's really easy to fall into a trap of saying, hey,
- 16:53Speaker 4: we're doing our job. Those guys aren't doing their job,
- 16:55Speaker 4: especially when one side of the ball is so elite,
- 16:57Speaker 4: and that's the situation you have right now in Cincinnati
- 17:00Speaker 4: with the offense that they have, whether it's Burrow or Flacco.
- 17:03Speaker 4: So it can be difficult, especially when you're trying to
- 17:07Speaker 4: claw back into this season and you score thirty eight points,
- 17:10Speaker 4: you figure you should be able to win that football game.
- 17:15Speaker 4: But that's what team building is about, that's what culture
- 17:17Speaker 4: is about, that's what leadership and accountability. And I think
- 17:23Speaker 4: if you get to a point where you do become
- 17:25Speaker 4: a fractured locker room, you aren't going to be able
- 17:28Speaker 4: to win. But you are fighting against the human element
- 17:31Speaker 4: and the human nature of being a high end competitor.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You're not much older than Joe Flacco. Are you amazed
- 17:38Speaker 1: by what he's done in his first three weeks in Cincinnati?
- 17:41Speaker 4: It is incredible, And you know, it's interesting talking to Joe.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Obviously he's still got the arm to be able to
- 17:47Speaker 4: play at a high level, But to me, it's his mentality.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I marvel at. You know, it's so easy when you
- 17:54Speaker 4: play sports to be if things don't go your way.
- 17:57Speaker 4: And let's face it, there's a point in this career
- 18:00Speaker 4: where it didn't go his way. He was a Super
- 18:02Speaker 4: Bowl winning quarterback that was basically relegated to backup status
- 18:06Speaker 4: the rest of his career, and it would be it's
- 18:09Speaker 4: so easy to be disgruntled, it's so easy to turn bitter,
- 18:13Speaker 4: it's so easy to blame everybody else, But I think
- 18:17Speaker 4: it's so refreshing and such a good lesson. When you
- 18:20Speaker 4: talk to him, you really feel this, and it's authentic.
- 18:24Speaker 4: He has a great gratitude for the game, He has
- 18:26Speaker 4: a great gratitude for where he at, where he's at
- 18:29Speaker 4: in this position in his career, and he's able to
- 18:32Speaker 4: go out there and really genuinely enjoy playing the game.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And to me, that is as rare as it gets
- 18:40Speaker 4: because unfortunately, and what I see in a lot of players,
- 18:45Speaker 4: and most players don't leave the game on their terms,
- 18:48Speaker 4: but a lot of players unfortunately had a chance to
- 18:51Speaker 4: live out their dream and play this game, and I
- 18:52Speaker 4: see them bitter at the end of their career because
- 18:55Speaker 4: things didn't go the way they felt either they were
- 18:57Speaker 4: injured or they just didn't feel like they got a
- 19:00Speaker 4: fair shake. And it's really refreshing and it's a great
- 19:03Speaker 4: reminder how we should approach everyday life. So I think
- 19:06Speaker 4: that's what I appreciate about Joe more than anything, is
- 19:08Speaker 4: not only his ability to come in and play, but
- 19:11Speaker 4: really his mentality towards the game and how he lives
- 19:14Speaker 4: every day.
- 19:15Speaker 1: He's getting a ton of credit for what he's done
- 19:17Speaker 1: the last few weeks and deservedly so. But what about
- 19:19Speaker 1: the job that Zach Taylor and the offensive coaches have
- 19:22Speaker 1: done in getting him up to speed under these circumstances.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Listen, I think it's an incredible story.
- 19:29Speaker 4: And you know, the game is the NFL game is complex,
- 19:32Speaker 4: There's no doubt about it. And to be able to
- 19:35Speaker 4: mix in different quarterbacks to try and come up with
- 19:38Speaker 4: a productive game plan, to devise an offense that in
- 19:42Speaker 4: just a few short weeks your players, not just the quarterback,
- 19:46Speaker 4: but everybody can still go out there and play fast,
- 19:50Speaker 4: is really incredible. And really, you know, I another place
- 19:52Speaker 4: where I credit Joe and you know I've had a
- 19:55Speaker 4: chance to cover him now when he was in Indianapolis
- 19:58Speaker 4: and in Cleveland and in a similar role is his
- 20:02Speaker 4: ability to simplify the game so that he plays fast.
- 20:05Speaker 4: I do think that coaches naturally try to overcomplicate things
- 20:10Speaker 4: because there's so much information that goes into playing at
- 20:13Speaker 4: a high level and it's your job as a player,
- 20:17Speaker 4: and I think coaches as well to strip away all
- 20:19Speaker 4: the extra minutia and get back to what are the
- 20:22Speaker 4: common denominators so we can go out and execute and
- 20:24Speaker 4: play fast. I know Joe does that and I really
- 20:27Speaker 4: credit Zach Taylor and his staff for understanding that. Listen,
- 20:33Speaker 4: with Burrow and that bank of knowledge and all the
- 20:35Speaker 4: different things that he can do, let's not try to
- 20:39Speaker 4: do that. What does Joe know? How can we simplify
- 20:42Speaker 4: it and let him play faster? And really, at the
- 20:45Speaker 4: end of the day, how can we get the ball
- 20:46Speaker 4: to our best players? And I think they've done an
- 20:48Speaker 4: incredible job of that in just a short time.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Adam arche letter from CBS is our guest. The Bengals
- 20:54Speaker 1: have had one hundred and forty two and one hundred
- 20:56Speaker 1: and eighty one rushing yards in the last two weeks.
- 20:58Speaker 1: The Bears are giving up more than one forty on
- 21:01Speaker 1: the ground per game this season. How important do you
- 21:04Speaker 1: view that for this Sunday?
- 21:06Speaker 4: I think it's critically important, just the ability to have balance. Listen,
- 21:11Speaker 4: this is going to be a passing football team with
- 21:13Speaker 4: the way your offense is built. What I thought, and
- 21:16Speaker 4: really what I've seen Cincinnati do a great job of,
- 21:20Speaker 4: especially in this last game against the New York Jets,
- 21:24Speaker 4: is teams are going to dedicate their resources to stop
- 21:27Speaker 4: and chase in Higgins. Defense to me is all about
- 21:31Speaker 4: how do you use the extra man. You have an
- 21:34Speaker 4: extra guy on defense, do you use them in coverage?
- 21:36Speaker 4: Do you use them in the back end, do you
- 21:39Speaker 4: use them and put them on the defensive line, do
- 21:41Speaker 4: you blitz them, do you put them in the box.
- 21:42Speaker 4: How do you allocate that extra person? And you saw
- 21:46Speaker 4: many times in that game on Sunday where the Jets
- 21:49Speaker 4: use the extra person to cover Chase or to double Higgins.
- 21:55Speaker 4: And many times you saw Joe check to a run
- 21:58Speaker 4: and when you have your safeties back and you have
- 22:00Speaker 4: the advantageous position and check to that run, you saw
- 22:04Speaker 4: it had devastating consequences and they were able to run it. Well,
- 22:08Speaker 4: same thing happened in the Pittsburgh game. So to have
- 22:11Speaker 4: a quarterback that can manage that, you obviously have that
- 22:14Speaker 4: in Joe. Well they're both Joe, but you obviously have
- 22:16Speaker 4: that in Burrow. But with Flacco, he made several checks
- 22:19Speaker 4: in that game that put them in an advantageous position
- 22:23Speaker 4: to give it to Chase Brown, and he took advantage
- 22:25Speaker 4: of it. So just being able to play the game
- 22:27Speaker 4: within the game and be able to capitalize and get
- 22:30Speaker 4: those explosive runs gives you one more thing that you
- 22:33Speaker 4: have to think about on defense.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Whose name is not Chase in Higgins.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Chicago has sixteen takeaways. The Bears lead the NFL in
- 22:42Speaker 1: turnover ratio. What jumps out when you watch that Bears
- 22:45Speaker 1: d Well.
- 22:46Speaker 3: That's been their calling card.
- 22:47Speaker 4: We had the Bears in I don't know it was
- 22:50Speaker 4: Week three or four when they played the Raiders, and listen,
- 22:54Speaker 4: in their four wins, they've had three games with four takeaways,
- 22:59Speaker 4: in one game with three takeaways, and their losses they
- 23:01Speaker 4: had they had no takeaways.
- 23:03Speaker 3: And so give you just simple math.
- 23:06Speaker 4: You give your offense more possessions, you take possessions away
- 23:09Speaker 4: from the other team, you have a much better chance
- 23:12Speaker 4: of winning. They have some ballhawks on that defense. Kevin
- 23:15Speaker 4: Byer has been one of the NFL's best as a
- 23:17Speaker 4: free safety for a long now, almost a decade now
- 23:20Speaker 4: and taking away the football, and so to me, that
- 23:24Speaker 4: is going to be essential. Now, who knows who's going
- 23:27Speaker 4: to play quarterback this week, hopefully Flacco for the Bengals.
- 23:30Speaker 4: He's going to be healthy and he can play. I mean,
- 23:32Speaker 4: that's certainly one of the best things that he has
- 23:34Speaker 4: done is take care of the football and not give
- 23:36Speaker 4: it to the other team. So that has been the
- 23:40Speaker 4: Bears formula. That's been the Bears what they've done, and
- 23:45Speaker 4: they didn't do it this last week against Baltimore and
- 23:48Speaker 4: they ended up losing that game.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Final thing for Adam Archialetta. It's been a crazy first
- 23:53Speaker 1: half of the season in the AFC North. The first
- 23:56Speaker 1: place Steelers only have one more win than the Bengals.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Is your view of the state of affairs in this division?
- 24:04Speaker 4: You know what, I have no no idea what's gonna happen.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Like like I said, I I did not expect the Jets.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I thought they were gonna struggle. And you say, listen,
- 24:15Speaker 4: and this is where I I. You know, people talk
- 24:18Speaker 4: about strength of schedule, Well it doesn't really apply because
- 24:21Speaker 4: the Jets hadn't won a game. So tell me that
- 24:23Speaker 4: game was easy for the Bengals, right, Neither team.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I think.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Obviously of Joe's health, that's gonna be a factor in this.
- 24:35Speaker 4: I do think at the end of the day, it's
- 24:37Speaker 4: gonna it's gonna come down to December football. Both teams
- 24:42Speaker 4: have glaring holes on one part of their team. The Steelers,
- 24:46Speaker 4: even though they're highly paid on defense, can't seem to
- 24:49Speaker 4: stop anybody. And right now the Bengals, they they have
- 24:52Speaker 4: their own issues on the defensive side of the ball,
- 24:55Speaker 4: So to me, I still think the Bengals have a
- 24:57Speaker 4: chance to find themselves in this. I think baltim More still,
- 25:00Speaker 4: if they get Lamar back, has a chance to find
- 25:02Speaker 4: themselves in it. You can't necessarily trust that the Steelers
- 25:05Speaker 4: are going to go on any sort of a run.
- 25:07Speaker 4: So every single team here in the NFC or the
- 25:11Speaker 4: AFC North, outside of the Browns, they have some issues
- 25:15Speaker 4: they have to fix and they have to play perfect
- 25:17Speaker 4: football down the stretch.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Adam Save travels back to Cincinnati this weekend and thanks
- 25:22Speaker 1: so much for your time.
- 25:23Speaker 3: No problem. Can't wait for another good one.
- 25:26Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by pay Corps,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Proud to be the Bengals official HR software provider, by

- 25:40Speaker 1: the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 25:43Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. The Bengals are
- 25:47Speaker 1: a two and a half point underdog this week against
- 25:49Speaker 1: the four and three Chicago Bears. Under new head coach
- 25:53Speaker 1: Ben Johnson. The highly creative former offensive coordinator in Detroit.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Last year with the Lion, Johnson had a play called
- 26:02Speaker 1: stumblebum where quarterback Jared Goff pretended to be falling down,
- 26:07Speaker 1: running back Jamiir Gibbs dove to the ground as if
- 26:09Speaker 1: he was recovering the fumble, and then Goff straightened up
- 26:13Speaker 1: and threw a touchdown pass. Perhaps it was no coincidence
- 26:16Speaker 1: that the victim on that play was the team that
- 26:19Speaker 1: hired him to be their head coach, the Chicago Bears.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Johnson worked with Zach Taylor for four years in Miami.
- 26:27Speaker 6: Incredibly smart. I mean, this is no surprise where he's
- 26:30Speaker 6: at in his career, the job he's doing. I think
- 26:34Speaker 6: anyone who's ever interacted with him and worked with him
- 26:36Speaker 6: would see this coming. You know, one of the easily
- 26:40Speaker 6: one of the smartest people I've ever been around, great
- 26:43Speaker 6: outside the box thinker. He's worked his way up the
- 26:46Speaker 6: hard way. You know, when he got to Detroit, he
- 26:49Speaker 6: had to work up even though he was way overqualified
- 26:53Speaker 6: for where he started. That's just where you do. And
- 26:55Speaker 6: he just kept earning the trust of people and working
- 26:57Speaker 6: on his way all the way up through the ranks.
- 26:59Speaker 6: Did it all the hard Way did a great job
- 27:01Speaker 6: at every level he's been at tight end coach to
- 27:03Speaker 6: coordinator or Tom now the head coach, and so I'm
- 27:06Speaker 6: not surprised at all the job that has done.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Johnson had his pick of several head coaching jobs, and
- 27:12Speaker 1: one of the reasons why he chose Chicago was the
- 27:14Speaker 1: opportunity to work with the number one pick in last
- 27:17Speaker 1: year's draft, Caleb Williams. The voice of the Bears, Jeff Joniak,
- 27:22Speaker 1: joined Dave Lapham and me on the Bengals Game Plan
- 27:24Speaker 1: Show this week, and I started our conversation by asking
- 27:27Speaker 1: him about Williams play this season.
- 27:31Speaker 7: Well, he's definitely making progress. And you know, I can
- 27:35Speaker 7: look at statistics many different ways as we all can.
- 27:38Speaker 7: And Ron Rivera, my good friend and former Bears linebacker
- 27:41Speaker 7: and former head coach, in a couple of spots that
- 27:44Speaker 7: figures lieon Liar's figure. But I'm going to go with
- 27:47Speaker 7: the positives and Caleb, when you look at key situational football,
- 27:52Speaker 7: whether it be first down performance, what he does on
- 27:56Speaker 7: third down, what he done in the fourth quarter games.
- 28:00Speaker 7: You know, his quarterback ratings here have been up over
- 28:04Speaker 7: one hundred, so you know that's just one simple breadcrumb
- 28:08Speaker 7: leading to a bigger picture. But despite the loss last week,
- 28:11Speaker 7: and it was a tough one to take, no question
- 28:13Speaker 7: about it, Ben Johnson said he made major progress last week.
- 28:18Speaker 7: And as long as we keep pairing major progress for
- 28:20Speaker 7: a young quarterback, that's music to my ears.
- 28:23Speaker 2: What about the Chicago Bears in general, you know, it
- 28:26Speaker 2: seems like they've had their moments where they're playing pretty
- 28:29Speaker 2: darn dude football. I think it's a solid football team,
- 28:32Speaker 2: and then they've had other moments where you know, it's
- 28:34Speaker 2: been a struggle. And I guess I don't know. I
- 28:39Speaker 2: don't know exactly what the anticipation was organizationally for the
- 28:44Speaker 2: season for the Chicago Bears. I don't know if they're
- 28:47Speaker 2: living up to it or whether they're not, or you know,
- 28:50Speaker 2: just right right in the middle of all those expectations
- 28:54Speaker 2: in terms of how they performed. What is it about
- 28:58Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears why? I guess consistency or inconsistency might
- 29:03Speaker 2: be the best way to put it. What's the reason
- 29:05Speaker 2: for the inconsistency do you think, Jeff?
- 29:08Speaker 7: You know, and a lot of self inflicted wounds. I mean,
- 29:11Speaker 7: that would really sum up some of their losses here
- 29:14Speaker 7: Detroit was the exception that was just a steam rolling
- 29:17Speaker 7: walked into a hornet's nest there. But the penalties, you know,
- 29:21Speaker 7: they're one of the highest penalized teams in the NFL.
- 29:24Speaker 7: The false starts, they've got the most in the NFL.
- 29:26Speaker 7: Those pre snap things will drive any any coach crazy,
- 29:29Speaker 7: particularly an offensive coordinator who is the head coach in
- 29:33Speaker 7: this case, Ben Johnson, So he's challenged much like Zach
- 29:36Speaker 7: Taylor's challenged the defensive leaders of the football team there
- 29:40Speaker 7: in your neck of the woods. He's challenged the offensive
- 29:43Speaker 7: leaders in the Bears to clean it up and make
- 29:47Speaker 7: sure that they stop hurting themselves because it has happened
- 29:50Speaker 7: at critical moments. And there could be other penalties too,
- 29:54Speaker 7: including special teams that affected the balance of the field,
- 29:58Speaker 7: that put the team where they would back somebody up,
- 30:01Speaker 7: or you know, now it's a big penalty that that
- 30:03Speaker 7: wipes it out and now you get the football thirty
- 30:05Speaker 7: yards up down the field. So many of those types
- 30:08Speaker 7: of things, I think, you know, the first part of
- 30:10Speaker 7: the season, especially with the first time head coach and
- 30:13Speaker 7: a new staff, there's growing pains that come with learning
- 30:16Speaker 7: new schemes and particularly a very challenging and dynamic offensive
- 30:21Speaker 7: concepts that that Ben Johnson puts down the table.
- 30:24Speaker 1: The Bears have sixteen takeaways. They are number one in
- 30:29Speaker 1: the NFL in turnover ratio. How are they doing it?
- 30:33Speaker 1: How are they getting that many takeaways on defense?
- 30:37Speaker 7: Well, they're rallying to the ball, and you know, it's
- 30:40Speaker 7: a feeding frenzy when it starts to happen. They did
- 30:42Speaker 7: not have one last week and that was a tough
- 30:45Speaker 7: tell reason for the defeat. They were living on that
- 30:49Speaker 7: and they were turning those into points. Think they have
- 30:51Speaker 7: fifty points off takeaways. You know, I made a mistake.
- 30:55Speaker 7: I was talking. I was talking with the former All
- 30:58Speaker 7: Pro cornerback and Bears defensive back coach and passing game
- 31:01Speaker 7: coordinator Al Harris about, Hey, the ball is finding certain
- 31:06Speaker 7: players and it had been the case all throughout training
- 31:08Speaker 7: camp fellas, I mean guys like Tremaine Edmunds, guys like
- 31:12Speaker 7: Kevin Bayern and it spilled over into the regular season.
- 31:15Speaker 7: And I said, you know, why is the ball finding
- 31:18Speaker 7: these players? Is Is it just because of the And
- 31:20Speaker 7: he kept shaking his head. Am I on the run track?
- 31:23Speaker 7: He goes it's mindset, he corrected me, and I kept
- 31:25Speaker 7: trying to push that envelope. Nope, it's about mindset, and
- 31:28Speaker 7: I do believe this team plays with that mindset and
- 31:31Speaker 7: that fire and if they're able to cut it loose
- 31:35Speaker 7: and play physical and violent, that's what That's what every
- 31:38Speaker 7: coach wants. But that's been stated as one of the
- 31:42Speaker 7: key components of what they want the identity of this
- 31:44Speaker 7: team to be in all three phases. You know, the
- 31:47Speaker 7: ball is going to come out hard hits or ricochets,
- 31:51Speaker 7: or you know, making teams feel uncomfortable when that ball
- 31:54Speaker 7: is in the air, or if they're running at you
- 31:56Speaker 7: and you're getting raked every time you touch the ball.
- 31:59Speaker 2: When I think Chicago Bears, I think Dick but Kis,
- 32:03Speaker 2: I think, you know, just stoning people. I think, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 2: Walter Payton running people over and you know, putting cleat
- 32:11Speaker 2: marks up their chest and their face mask as he
- 32:13Speaker 2: runs them over. You know, I just think about Top Bears,
- 32:17Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears, I mean, monsters are the Midway. Have
- 32:22Speaker 2: they got that mentality? Does this group have that type
- 32:26Speaker 2: of mentality, because historically the Bears have been all about that.
- 32:29Speaker 2: They've been one of the most physical teams in the
- 32:31Speaker 2: National Football League, is this group of guys. Are they
- 32:35Speaker 2: up to the task.
- 32:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean they want to be. And I you know,
- 32:40Speaker 7: it's funny you brought that up because I've been banging
- 32:42Speaker 7: that drum for years. I don't know, call me a meathead,
- 32:45Speaker 7: I don't know what you want to call me, but
- 32:46Speaker 7: I guess I'm romanticizing the same thing of but just
- 32:49Speaker 7: peering over a guy on the ground after blasting him
- 32:53Speaker 7: and Mike Singletary in his eyes in that eighty five
- 32:56Speaker 7: defense in the sixty three championship team, those teams from
- 32:59Speaker 7: the forties. You know, I always feel that you should
- 33:03Speaker 7: reflect the city that you play in. And now this
- 33:06Speaker 7: is the city of broad shoulders. This is you know,
- 33:09Speaker 7: rough and tumble Chicago, the meat yards back in the day.
- 33:14Speaker 7: You know, just that kind of mentality, and I think
- 33:17Speaker 7: Bears fans expect it, they love it when it happens,
- 33:21Speaker 7: and I do too. And I think when you close
- 33:24Speaker 7: your eyes, especially in the AFC North, in the NFC North,
- 33:29Speaker 7: the old Black and Blue Division, in the NFC Central,
- 33:32Speaker 7: the AFC Central, and I go, I'm very familiar with
- 33:37Speaker 7: both of those divisions where I have grown up in
- 33:41Speaker 7: my life, and you can close your eyes and know
- 33:45Speaker 7: what a Steeler looks like, what a Raven looks like,
- 33:48Speaker 7: what a Cleveland Brown and ball in Cincinnati Bengal looked
- 33:52Speaker 7: like throughout the history of their franchise. And you can
- 33:54Speaker 7: say the same thing about the four teams in the
- 33:56Speaker 7: NFC North.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Jeff ben Johnson was the coach that every team with
- 34:02Speaker 1: a vacancy last year wanted to hire. How did the
- 34:06Speaker 1: Bears come out on top in that derby to come
- 34:09Speaker 1: away with Ben Johnson?
- 34:12Speaker 7: In his first introduction, he simply said I want this
- 34:15Speaker 7: job and it was over. Got it. As soon as
- 34:17Speaker 7: he said I want this job. He got that job.
- 34:21Speaker 7: And he made it clear before they even uttered a
- 34:23Speaker 7: single question in the interview, I want this job, and
- 34:27Speaker 7: that passion connected and it didn't hurt that he's very
- 34:33Speaker 7: well paid in addition, but he was going to get
- 34:35Speaker 7: that no matter where you go. But the Bears dipped
- 34:39Speaker 7: into their vault and they paid what they believe was
- 34:44Speaker 7: the best candidate for the job in this hiring cycle.
- 34:47Speaker 7: And I listen, man, I think this is my eighth
- 34:50Speaker 7: head coach in my twenty nine years associated with a team.
- 34:53Speaker 7: In twenty five is play by play. I've met some
- 34:57Speaker 7: amazing coaches, all kinds of coaches, different personalities. Uh, this
- 35:02Speaker 7: this guy has me waking up every day excited about
- 35:05Speaker 7: what I'm going to see next and certainly on game day,
- 35:08Speaker 7: what what plan is going to be put together offensively
- 35:12Speaker 7: and and and I feel the same way frankly about
- 35:14Speaker 7: Dennis Allen right now. I'm just excited to see what
- 35:18Speaker 7: they bring to the table because they have They are
- 35:20Speaker 7: making new game plans every single week for their opponent.
- 35:23Speaker 7: And then that's just relying on, you know, a bunch
- 35:26Speaker 7: of plays thrown together. That they have a they have
- 35:28Speaker 7: a plan, and I do appreciate that.
- 35:31Speaker 2: What are you expecting? What is the media expecting? What
- 35:34Speaker 2: do you think you're gonna see how the Chicago Bears
- 35:37Speaker 2: all season long? What's going to be their staple? What's
- 35:40Speaker 2: going to be the thing they hang their hat on?
- 35:42Speaker 2: No matter what, the Chicago Bears will be.
- 35:46Speaker 7: This physical and violent. That's what they want to be.
- 35:50Speaker 7: They want to if you're if you're gonna get into
- 35:52Speaker 7: a fight, you know, and you're gonna win that fight
- 35:55Speaker 7: and you're gonna leave Chicago or they're gonna you're gonna
- 35:58Speaker 7: feel that game, and you want to feel them when
- 36:01Speaker 7: you watch and turn on the tape and you know
- 36:04Speaker 7: that you're going to be in for a long six minutes,
- 36:06Speaker 7: no matter what the outcome. I think that's kind of
- 36:09Speaker 7: the notion and all three phases, not just not just defense,
- 36:14Speaker 7: but offense and special teams. And I'm sure every coach
- 36:18Speaker 7: in the league want that right, but you've got to
- 36:20Speaker 7: speak it into existence and make it a thing. And
- 36:23Speaker 7: then believing because this has been a franchise obviously it
- 36:27Speaker 7: has had a roller coaster ride, and they have to
- 36:30Speaker 7: feel and understand what it takes to win, that every
- 36:34Speaker 7: play counts, that every play matters, and learn how to
- 36:37Speaker 7: do it. And they started that process during that four
- 36:40Speaker 7: game winning streak, and they want to make sure that
- 36:43Speaker 7: that feeling does not vacate the facility after one setback
- 36:49Speaker 7: last week.
- 36:50Speaker 1: All right, thanks to Jeff joni Ack, And here's a
