Transcript
- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Tabaki Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:20friends review Korean dramas. And we're back.
- 0:24We're back for another episode on a key drama.
- 0:28For this episode, I am joined by Sarah.
- 0:31Hi Sarah. How are you?
- 0:33I'm good, Jess. So lovely to be back.
- 0:35I love having you here. Sarah from K Drama this slash
- 0:38the Co host of Afternoon to Ask podcast.
- 0:41I love having you on. It is such a great time when
- 0:43you're here. I think the last time you were
- 0:45here was a bit more serious. We were here for DP we.
- 0:49Were. Yeah, and then unfortunately, I
- 0:53don't, I don't think this is any less serious.
- 0:58We're gonna be talking. About the Smile has Left Your
- 1:02Eyes, which is firmly A melodrama with a swing gook and
- 1:10Chong Soo min, so we are gonna really have a time here.
- 1:14I have to be honest right out the gate.
- 1:18I was unable to rewatch this drama before this recording
- 1:22because they've removed The Smile Has Left Your Eyes from
- 1:26Vicky from the Vicki library and I couldn't find it anywhere.
- 1:29And I was like, Oh my God, that sucks.
- 1:31I always pride myself on rewatching the drama before
- 1:35recording, so I also was extremely busy, like my car
- 1:39broke down. I fell like it's been a crazy
- 1:43couple of weeks here and I did not have a chance to read the
- 1:49recaps of all of the episodes too on Drama Beans, which is
- 1:52what I love to do as well if I cannot get a hold of the
- 1:56episodes. And so I haven't been able to do
- 1:57that. What I did do was reread my
- 2:02original blog review from 2019, and I gotta say, I don't know
- 2:07what the hell I'm talking about. I'm talking specifics in my
- 2:11review in my blog review. I don't know what's going on.
- 2:15So we are in for a treat today. I am flying blind.
- 2:20I'm going to be leaning on Sarah heavily because Sarah is which.
- 2:24Is, which is unfortunate, you know, because I also have the
- 2:28memory of a goldfish. I'm just so I'm just so old now.
- 2:31Like I had two kids. They took my brains.
- 2:34I haven't recovered. It's nearly 10:00 at night here
- 2:37in the UK. So and we will be good.
- 2:40We'll be good. We're going to just have fun
- 2:42through this. We might talk a little more
- 2:43broadly about the show than usual, but it's all in good fun.
- 2:48We're going to review. We're going to talk through it
- 2:50as much as we can with as much specificity as we can muster,
- 2:56but without further ado, I'm just gonna go through some
- 3:00housekeeping if this is your first time listening.

- 3:55I love you guys. All right, so we'll get started
- 3:58with the My Drama List synopsis, which is actually a very good
- 4:01synopsis. When I was putting it in here, I
- 4:03was like, hold on, this is pretty good.
- 4:05I need this. You never know, right?
- 4:07It's kind of inconsistent. It's considerate, so here's the
- 4:10My Drama List synopsis for The Smile has left Your Eyes.
- 4:14It reads ATV series centered around the unfolding
- 4:17relationship between free and unpredictable yet dangerous Kim
- 4:20Moos Kim Moo Yong, who is called Monster.
- 4:24He is the first assistant in a Korean beer brewery who becomes
- 4:28a suspect when a woman's suicide turns out to be murder.
- 4:31His life begins to change when he meets a kind, warm
- 4:34advertising designer named Yujing Kang who wishes to be Moo
- 4:39Yong's safe haven. She bears as many emotional
- 4:42scars as him. Yujin Kang also has a brother, a
- 4:46homicide detective named Yujin Kuk with 27 years of job
- 4:49experience. I don't know why they gave his
- 4:51job experience though. He could just say like he was on
- 4:54the 4th for a long time, 27 years of job experience.
- 4:58He strives to reveal who Moo Yung really is and attempts to
- 5:02keep his sister Jin Kong away from Moo Yung, with whom she
- 5:06begins to know and fall in love with.
- 5:08I just added the Fall in love with because I think that's
- 5:10important. This show aired from October
- 5:142018 to November of 2018. It is 16 episodes long.
- 5:19It's actually a remake of a Japanese drama from 2002 called
- 5:24Sora Karafuru Ichiyoku Nohuhoshi.
- 5:29I hope I didn't butcher that too much Or 1,000,000 Stars Falling
- 5:33From the Sky, which is the alternative title for this show,
- 5:36A Million Stars Following Falling from the Sky.
- 5:39It is directed by UJ One. This guy is actually, I guess
- 5:45one of my favorite directors because he's directed High
- 5:49School, King of Savvy, Oh my Ghost, Tomorrow With You, Abyss,
- 5:53Hi by Mama Hometown, Cha Cha Cha, Crash Course and Romance.
- 5:56And he is also the director of the upcoming Mom's Friend's Son,
- 6:01which is will be a 2024 release. It is one of my most anticipated
- 6:05cage dramas of the year. It will start Jung So Min and
- 6:08Jung Hen in his first ROM com. Yay.
- 6:13Which we manifested. Jess, let's take some credit for
- 6:16this girl. Let's take this some credit for
- 6:18this we. Talked at length about how
- 6:20Jungian has not done sort of like a romantic or I should say
- 6:25ROM com light hearted show, and how when you went to his fan
- 6:31meeting that was something that he specifically said he wanted
- 6:34to do. And lo and behold, we're getting
- 6:36this drama this year. So we we manifested it.
- 6:40We did. We started with a link.
- 6:42With a link actually, because obviously then you know this
- 6:45female Lady Chung, Soo Min, and that's just going to be great.
- 6:48Like, I'm so excited about them two together.
- 6:51I know. And she does such good.
- 6:53I mean I think they're both such great comic actors but also do
- 6:58the Emotion so and I loved hometown Cha Cha Cha.
- 7:01So I'm really hoping like this is a director that knows ROM
- 7:04coms and doesn't screw them up in the second like, half either,
- 7:08right? But he does like really packing
- 7:10the emotion because he, the second-half of hometown Cha Cha
- 7:13Cha was was good for. That I think he knows about tone
- 7:18really well. Yeah, and even though I hated
- 7:21Abyss and Oh my Ghost is not my favorite drama at all, I really
- 7:27respect some like some of these other shit.
- 7:29Like Tomorrow With You I think is so underrated.
- 7:32Hi by Mom. I've heard nothing but good
- 7:34things about that show. Hometown Cha cha cha Who hasn't
- 7:36freaking heard of that show and love that show.
- 7:39Crash Course a really nice solid show from 2023.
- 7:43So I really like this director, like All Things Considered.
- 7:46So good on him. Yeah.
- 7:50Writer is Song Hey Jin. I'm not sure if this is a female
- 7:54writer. My guess is yes, but this writer
- 7:57really doesn't have that much to their name, about four or five
- 8:01TV credits. And I really haven't heard about
- 8:04any of these shows before. Sent from Heaven from 2012.
- 8:09My Sweet Soul from 2008. And then they also have a
- 8:12Netflix show coming out from this year to Women I.
- 8:17So we got to keep an eye out for that.
- 8:18I don't know what that's about, who stars in there or anything,
- 8:21but when it says Netflix, I kind of feel like there's budget
- 8:23behind it. So might have some big names in
- 8:26that. They've also written movies
- 8:29including Love Lies from 2016 Love Lies.
- 8:33I reviewed it for the Patreon feed.
- 8:36It stars Han Yoju and it is heartbreaking and frustrating.
- 8:43It's a period piece with the Japanese occupation kind of
- 8:47happening, kind of tearing friends apart.
- 8:50It was it. Hani Oju plays a villain,
- 8:53essentially, and you're just like, Oh my God, like you have
- 8:57no idea. Like the lengths that some of
- 9:01these characters will go through go to.
- 9:04And it's very surprising. It's not a nice comfort movie at
- 9:09all. It seems to track, especially
- 9:14when you pair it with the smile has left your eyes.
- 9:17You're kind of like, oh, of course it was.
- 9:19It was written by the same person.
- 9:21Absolutely. She.
- 9:23Likes axed. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:25So we had this cast, which I'm only going to list the top three
- 9:28people. So we have Soy and Gook, who
- 9:30plays Kim Moo Sung. The monster quote, UN quote
- 9:33monster. He's been in so many things.
- 9:38He's really worked his way up through the ranks and he's been
- 9:43in stuff like love Rain from 2012, reply 19897, sorry 1997
- 9:51from 2012. That is when I bought all my
- 9:53stock in Sewing Gook. That's when I fell in love with
- 9:56him. Like madly in love with Sewing
- 9:59Gook. Like that's the the show Master
- 10:03Sun, which I think you just watched.
- 10:05Recently I just finished that. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:06Yeah. Oh my God.
- 10:08High school king of savvy. So he's worked with the director
- 10:10before the King's face, Shopaholic Louie, which I don't
- 10:13remember laughing as hard at a drama as I have with Shopaholic
- 10:19Louie. He was so good in that he is
- 10:22such a comedian. Oh.
- 10:23My God, it's hysterical. You know, like my our sister Pod
- 10:26Afternoon Delight has just done an episode on K Drama Himbos and
- 10:30how much they love them, and he is the archetypal K Drama Himbo.
- 10:35He's so good. It's so good.
- 10:38But then he also flips and plays like super smart savant kind of
- 10:43characters, right? Which is what he plays here as
- 10:45well. And he just has such range.
- 10:48Such range. So he's been in doom at your
- 10:51service, which a lot of people like to.
- 10:53I think that's a very polarizing show.
- 10:57And Cafe Minam Dong and Death's Game most recently, which is one
- 11:02of my favorite shows that I've seen in 2024, Period.
- 11:06It is #1 so far as far as 2024 goes, but he's excellent in
- 11:13that. How do you feel about towing
- 11:16good? Are you going to the band
- 11:17meeting? Did I do I have that right?
- 11:19Oh my God. I feel like you're like helping
- 11:22me manifest like my, my, I just need to come on my podcast and
- 11:25just tell you like everything I want to happen in my life.
- 11:28Because I think yes, that was it, right.
- 11:31So our first podcast ever was we we talked about do you like
- 11:34Brahms and for some reason we started talking about fan meets.
- 11:37I don't know why. But anyway I said I I really
- 11:40wanted to know what happened in fan meets And then circumstances
- 11:43happened and I I managed to get ticket.
- 11:46I was in Hong Kong when John he in was in Hong Kong doing his
- 11:48fan meet. So I got to do his fan meet.
- 11:50I did a whole podcast on it. So if you do want to know what
- 11:53happens in fan meets, check it out on afternoon.
- 11:55It asks. And then you asked me onto this
- 11:57PERD a while back Now and then I saw that sewing Book was doing
- 12:02fan meets in just DC and in LA and I was like, oh, I really
- 12:08wish I could go. And then, you know, you have
- 12:10just one of those moments when you're just like, do you know
- 12:11what? Like maybe I could make it
- 12:13happen. So I looked up like the Air mile
- 12:15offer because I knew I couldn't afford it money wise or I
- 12:18couldn't justify it. Obviously I can't afford it if
- 12:21I, you know, stopped eating and stuff.
- 12:22But anyway, I I kind of could. I justify going all the way to
- 12:26DC to to see him on Air Miles and then that stars aligned.
- 12:31It was really cheap. And yeah, so I'm going next.
- 12:36Oh, so exciting. I'm so excited.
- 12:39I'm sewing. Sewing Gook is one of my he's in
- 12:42my top five. I don't really rank them, but
- 12:44like he is in my top five of K drummer like.
- 12:50I love it. Yeah, and he sings as well,
- 12:54because I really think of fun meat where like the actor sings
- 12:57as well. Is always really enjoyable too
- 12:58because they can mix it up and. My ovaries can't take that.
- 13:02OK, Like, honestly, them singing and they're actually good.
- 13:08I don't stand a chance. So sewing gook in this show,
- 13:13What did you think about him? I think it's one of his best
- 13:17roles. Like, I think it is absolutely.
- 13:20You say what you think about the drama.
- 13:22I think there are mixed feelings.
- 13:23I think generally about this. Drama.
- 13:25Oh. Absolutely.
- 13:26But no one, no one would ever kind of contradict you if you
- 13:31said that this is shows you what an amazing actor he is.
- 13:35He is so and he's so charismatic.
- 13:38He's really mesmerizing. He's completely red flag.
- 13:42Oh, oh, so, so, so. Sad question, though.
- 13:47Yeah, he's so. He's so captivating.
- 13:50He's so captivating. Exactly.
- 13:51And he's the reason why you just keep wanting to watch it because
- 13:55you feel like this is a all the way through the drama.
- 13:58I mean it's I'm not going to miss Spoiler to say it feels
- 14:01like it's a train wreck that is about to happen but you can't
- 14:04stop watching what is going to happen.
- 14:07And he does amazing things with his eyes.
- 14:11Like that's my main thing with this drama that might take away.
- 14:13I remember thinking like he can make his eyes do so many
- 14:18different things like he has it's kind of like dead eye look,
- 14:23do you know what I mean? Like he looks like he is dead
- 14:25inside and you can't read him. And he's unreadable for a large
- 14:30swath of the show. And that's part of his thing,
- 14:33like the part of the character. Exactly.
- 14:35But also just he injects it so well and so he becomes this
- 14:39thing that you can't read. And then at other times he is
- 14:42just so raw and so vulnerable and he just he decides which of
- 14:47these things you're going to see.
- 14:49And I just think that's such a talent.
- 14:50It is because he feels like he's in complete control.
- 14:54Yeah. And that is, I don't want to
- 14:59shit on other actors or other names in the biz.
- 15:02I'm not going to name names. We all we all know who you mean.
- 15:06Jessica. No, it's your AMA episode.
- 15:11I won't. But when he he's he's a like,
- 15:15what can he dance as well? That would make him a triple
- 15:18threat. I think so.
- 15:20I mean look, if you look at those early because he obviously
- 15:23he won the singing show. This is so in goods background
- 15:25like he won a singing show. He wasn't actually an actor to
- 15:28start with, right? And then obviously got casted.
- 15:31So in the beginning shows, he did more singing shows, didn't
- 15:34he? And he also always does a track
- 15:37on a pretty much every OST of his dramas.
- 15:42So and he still releases single. So I still like I still follow
- 15:45him on my Apple Music. So I kind of add his music in.
- 15:48But yeah, in the early, early days, like his reply 1997 days,
- 15:52he does do a bit of dancing as well.
- 15:54And he doesn't now, I don't think, but he did back then and
- 15:58yeah. I think that he's a powerhouse,
- 16:00yes. And it's hard to find talent
- 16:05such as his where he can just sort of command the room and
- 16:09he's got such a presence about him in the show that keeps it
- 16:13even if you're sort of on the fence about the plot or you're
- 16:17just kind of confused about where things are going.
- 16:20And that's part of the think of it as well, like part of the
- 16:24sensation of watching the show is that you're kind of like,
- 16:27what is going on? I don't know if he's good.
- 16:29I don't know if he's bad. I don't know if he's a murderer.
- 16:33Like, who is he? But that's the whole thing, is
- 16:36that he is a slippery character, slippery persona, and you can't
- 16:44quite guess what he's thinking. And then there are glimpses of
- 16:48vulnerability that are so attractive that make you think,
- 16:54Oh my God, you just want to wrap him up in a hug.
- 16:56And you're like, I totally get why Chung Suman is fighting for
- 17:01this man. Yeah.
- 17:03Totally or. Actually, initially.
- 17:05Yeah. Or initially the Sangha is drawn
- 17:07to him because he's just. I mean, he is, he is everything
- 17:13that you would want your daughter not to date, right?
- 17:16Oh. Absolutely.
- 17:16If you see this man and you're a parent, you'd be like,
- 17:19absolutely not, no, no, no. No, no, no.
- 17:23But you know, all of us have fallen for a guy like this.
- 17:27We've all fallen for a guy like this.
- 17:28It's a. Prototypical bad boy without,
- 17:33like, all of the that. Boy with emotional wounds, yes,
- 17:37but but like he you're you're going to love him and heal those
- 17:41wounds. And yeah, you're like I can.
- 17:42Fix him like you can fix it? Yeah, exactly.
- 17:45You're going to be his salvation.
- 17:48That's the character. Yes.
- 17:50Yes, absolutely. It's like drama crack, honestly.
- 17:53It's so is. It's.
- 17:55So is, Yeah. And then the whole then watching
- 17:58the drama becomes quite a visceral experience, because all
- 18:01the time you're like, should I even root for this guy, right?
- 18:03Does some really, actually bad shit like some actual bad shit?
- 18:06It's. Super questionable.
- 18:08And you're like, that's absolutely criminal.
- 18:11Yeah, I can't support that. But but if he.
- 18:16But he didn't do this, we got to count our blessings here.
- 18:18On the levels here, he's kind of lower down on the totem than I
- 18:22thought. Like you're kind of making
- 18:25excuses. Yeah, justifying the whole time,
- 18:27right? You're like, oh, but he has a
- 18:29really, really traumatic past. Right this is.
- 18:32Why he's doing this. But he is, you know, like
- 18:34there's always this list of like K drama, Red Flag male leads.
- 18:39And honestly, most of them seem quite tame because.
- 18:42It's totally, totally, I agree. I agree.
- 18:48Because they don't have like he puts his money where his mouth
- 18:51is. Yeah.
- 18:53OK, he's actually doing some crazy.
- 18:56Shit, yeah, yeah. And he's really treating people
- 19:00badly. So this is this is the rich girl
- 19:03right at the start. Like, I'm not going to spoil,
- 19:06not spoil his section, but what what he ends up doing to her is
- 19:09just. It's so cold.
- 19:11It's so. Cold.
- 19:13It's so cold. And that's the thing.
- 19:15It's not even like he's like a cat with a toy, yes.
- 19:20And I Oh my God, I said that in my review in my OK, we'll leave
- 19:25that for. She just doesn't.
- 19:26Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:26We'll leave that for wait, but absolutely.
- 19:30You're totally on the money there.
- 19:31I I agree with you. So his Co star is Chung Selman,
- 19:36who plays Jing Kong. She's been in mischievous kiss
- 19:40from 2010, which is where I remember her from.
- 19:43Talk about toxic male leads back then.
- 19:46That was one of those where I was like, I cannot rewatch this.
- 19:52Can we get married? My father is strange because
- 19:55this is my first life, which pay attention to the podcast feed
- 19:59because we'll be covering it this.
- 20:01Season that was. That was my first Chung Summin
- 20:03drama. Oh, oh, that's a good one.
- 20:06Yeah, so Chung Summin also was in Alchemy of Souls Season one.
- 20:13So we won't go into Alchemy of Souls.
- 20:16We won't. We've left it all on the dance
- 20:18floor. That's just scroll back in your
- 20:20podcast feed. There's a couple of episodes
- 20:21there for you, so. What do you write episodes, by
- 20:24the way? I haven't listened.
- 20:27I can hardly recommend them. It's.
- 20:28Point by point. So Chung So Min, what did you
- 20:32think of her in this show? And you know her as an actress
- 20:35as a whole. I mean, I love Chung So Min so
- 20:38I'm not. I'm not I'm not going to sit
- 20:40here be unbiased because I just really love her.
- 20:44Yeah. I'm totally biased and I just,
- 20:47but she's so good in this. I mean she brings it all like I
- 20:50think she's such she's similar to sewing, cooking that way.
- 20:53She can do comedy. She can do really, really good
- 20:57emotion and she brings you in. I think she's such a warm.
- 21:01So whatever character she's playing, even, you know, even
- 21:03when she's, I mean, she's not in this drama.
- 21:05She is quite warm in this drama. But even when she's like a
- 21:07colder kind of assassin kind of character, like an alchemy of
- 21:11souls, she still brings you in and makes you feel.
- 21:15And there's something always just very warming about her.
- 21:19I feel as an actress, yeah, I love her.
- 21:22Yeah, I just think of her as this sort of baby faced person
- 21:28with a very quiet innocence about her that has never left.
- 21:33And it might be because I watched her in mischievous kiss
- 21:37many years ago when I was first watching K dramas and that show
- 21:41she is very infantile and she was paired with like a Sundar
- 21:45Elite. So it's like she was banging her
- 21:49head against the wall and she was very ridiculous and so I
- 21:52almost feel like I can't push that out of my mind.
- 21:55She does have a very like cute face like she's not, doesn't
- 22:00have severe features like sewing Guk does.
- 22:04So I feel like it's proper casting to have him be this
- 22:10sociopath and then she is much warmer as you said.
- 22:16Yeah, they had great chemistry together.
- 22:19Really good chemistry. Like, really good.
- 22:20Chemistry, Yeah. So they have really good enemies
- 22:23chemistry at the start, like they're really sparky, you know?
- 22:29But then obviously as the drama aggressors, you know, they just
- 22:33have more, even more like different kinds of chemistry.
- 22:36So really well cast together I. Think because they seem to be
- 22:40connecting on a soul level. Yes, really.
- 22:43Believably. Throughout the show and you're
- 22:46like, how can we let that go? He's such a red flag, but like,
- 22:50look what they have. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:54It's hard. It's difficult.
- 22:55So that's Chung Suman. And then her brother is Pak Sung
- 22:58Hoon. Who plays Jane Cook, the cop
- 23:02slash brother. OK, this guy has been in
- 23:04everything. He's been in like 51 movies,
- 23:07including the great battle from 2018.
- 23:11I just watched this movie several weeks ago for the first
- 23:14time with it's got toinsung in it.
- 23:16It's got Namji Hook in it. Let me just say right now, Namji
- 23:18Hook not a period piece person, OK?
- 23:21Like you put him in battle armor from like medieval Korea and
- 23:24you're like maybe not. Perhaps not like that man knows
- 23:27what an iPhone is. OK.
- 23:29I'm sorry to say so. And you're you're saying that as
- 23:32a fan of his, right? Like oh I love yok I.
- 23:35Love Namju Yok. I love him.
- 23:38That man should not be in period pieces.
- 23:40Oh, that's hilarious. So that's the great battle he
- 23:44was in. Love lies with Han Yoju you just
- 23:49mentioned. Yeah, POC.
- 23:50Sunun Wong played, I believe a Japanese like Commander or
- 23:56something like that. Just vile, right?
- 24:00Vile dude. And then he was also in
- 24:02commitment, which I always like to mention from 2013.
- 24:06That's TOP from Big Bang, right? Playing a North Korean spy.
- 24:14Right. Who's in South Korea on a
- 24:16mission and he gets implanted into like this fake family and
- 24:21Paxongoon plays his fake father in South Korea, like while
- 24:25they're on this mission and I'm like, whoa wow, what a
- 24:29throwback. So those are just a few of the
- 24:33movies that he's been in. And then he's been in 27 TV
- 24:36shows including, and I hate to even say it, Snowdrop from
- 24:412021-2022. There is a very painful episode
- 24:46of ours up for Snowdrop if you want to listen to it.
- 24:50I had someone DM me the other day and say I got up to episode
- 24:545 of Snowdrop and I just couldn't finish.
- 24:57I went and listened to your episode and decided to just skip
- 25:01and watch the finale. So thank you so much for
- 25:04reviewing that show and I didn't have to endure it and you did
- 25:10the hard work for me and I decided made the decision after
- 25:13listening to you guys to just skip to the.
- 25:16End I have I have to, despite being a big Jungian fan, have
- 25:20not started Snowdrop just because there's just so much
- 25:24noise about it. That just makes me think it is
- 25:26easy. I don't.
- 25:27I don't want to hate watch something, but.
- 25:30He is brilliant. You haven't.
- 25:32Well, this is the worst thing. I think it's even worse.
- 25:35You know when I'm one of your faves is this is happening to me
- 25:37right now in like, the impossible air.
- 25:39Oh God, really like someone. And you're just like, I really
- 25:42want to watch this drama because of you don't.
- 25:46Do it. You don't do anything.
- 25:48No, I know, I know. But anyway, So anyway, I drop.
- 25:51So sorry. Joke.
- 25:55So you ended up dropping impossible error.
- 25:57I've dropped, I've dropped, yeah, yeah, I couldn't.
- 26:00Couldn't happen. Yeah that's that's a
- 26:02conversation for a different day.
- 26:03So maybe maybe later. But anyway, so this guy has also
- 26:08been in good or bad Dong Jay. He'll that will come out later
- 26:11this year. I don't know what that's about
- 26:14at all but it's a 2024 release so we'll see about it.
- 26:17The Killing vote Bloodhounds Unlock my boss, Life on Mars,
- 26:21Man to man, just so many. Also Cain and Abel from 2009,
- 26:25which I remember mentioning on that episode with you on
- 26:30Afternoon, asks. Yes, it's one of your underrated
- 26:32dramas. I love Cain and Abel.
- 26:35I just love it. It is so angsty.
- 26:38And it's with Toji Sub, which is one of my first crushes in K
- 26:42Drama Land. Like that, man.
- 26:44Anyway, that's a whole another thing.
- 26:46But. Yeah, I've just.
- 26:47I've actually just seen him in unluck.
- 26:49My boss. OK.
- 26:50All right. Which is a drama I cannot
- 26:52recommend so despite despite Che Jong Kop TE Jong Kop.
- 26:57Is a delight, isn't he? He.
- 26:59Is so cute and actually they share.
- 27:02So the actress that say Sung Ah is also in in from Smilers Left
- 27:08Your Eyes is also in Unlock My Boss.
- 27:11So she's actually yeah. So it was fun to see both Parson
- 27:14Wong and So and so in Unlock My Boss when I just finished like
- 27:19Smilers Left Your Eyes. But yeah, yeah, sadly, sadly
- 27:24disappointing. OK, well what did you think of
- 27:28this guy and his character? Because I think a lot of my
- 27:32frustrations in rereading my original blog review came from
- 27:38his character a lot. So the actor himself playing
- 27:43this role loved him, I thought. He was.
- 27:46A great, yeah. He was a great older brother.
- 27:49I think he had this really great.
- 27:51In fact, I needed more of him and tack like his fellow police
- 27:55officer friend that had this thing, unspoken thing that they
- 28:00never kind of like did more with, which is a shame I think,
- 28:03because they had really great chemistry.
- 28:06So all of my issues with him hard to do with the character
- 28:11and the logic fails, yes, with his art, which I guess will go
- 28:15into the spoilers. So I as an actor, I think he did
- 28:19really great, I think. He right, I don't.
- 28:21I it wasn't the acting at all. No, it was the decisions that
- 28:24they had him doing. Yeah.
- 28:28Which like didn't make sense. No, no.
- 28:31And that bothers me. Yeah, even now I'm kind of like
- 28:34feeling the frustration without knowing why.
- 28:36I'm frustrated because I can't remember the details.
- 28:40They might come back to you. They might come back maybe.
- 28:43Interesting to see if yours look the same as mine, because I
- 28:45haven't read your blog, so we'll.
- 28:46OK, Oh, perfect. OK, so with that being said that
- 28:51that's the end of there's more cast members like Komen Chi as
- 28:54well is in it. Sun Tzu plays Sanga, that
- 28:58character that we keep mentioning, the rich girl who
- 29:00gets done dirty. You know this cast is a little
- 29:04more extensive, but those are the three main players.
- 29:08What did you think of this show? How was your experience watching
- 29:11it? And without giving any spoilers
- 29:14away, like, how did the ending sit with you?
- 29:19I hated the ending. I'm going to be completely
- 29:22frank. I love the show.
- 29:23I still, I still would watch this drama again purely for the
- 29:30performances, especially from SO and Gug and Chun So Min.
- 29:34I still feel like it was a rewarding watch for me.
- 29:38I found it frustrating because it could have been amazing.
- 29:43Like it could have been like it had so many of the ingredients
- 29:47to be an amazing show. And the things that didn't make
- 29:51it amazing were completely fixable.
- 29:54You know, They were like, they were not, They were not
- 29:57circumstances or things that you couldn't change or whatever, you
- 30:00know, or like drama, you know, like a director that created
- 30:03really saggy drama. It was none, none of those
- 30:04things. I think it was mainly for me in
- 30:07the in the plotting and the ending that they chose.
- 30:13How do I put this? Well, I'll just say it's not a
- 30:16happy ending. Yes.
- 30:20And we'll leave it at that. We won't say what the what the
- 30:22hell happens at all at the end, but you enjoyed the process of
- 30:26watching them the show. And I remember when you were
- 30:29because you post updates on Instagram, like when you get
- 30:32through a few episodes, you'll say like, you know, update and
- 30:35you'll say what your thoughts are.
- 30:37And you were kind of enthralled with the show.
- 30:40I was, I was, yeah. I really felt like it knew what
- 30:43it was doing and I felt like, and I think this is it, yeah,
- 30:47you're kind of bringing it back now.
- 30:48I felt like I felt let down because the ending, which we're
- 30:55not going to talk about, just didn't unfold narratively for me
- 31:00in a logical way. So I'm not.
- 31:03There are some people that can only handle dramas that have
- 31:06happy endings and no shade on them completely understand, you
- 31:09know, why some people feel that way.
- 31:11I'm not one of these people. I can.
- 31:13I'm totally happy with a happy ending.
- 31:14But it has to make sense and it has to be built up throughout
- 31:19the drama so that when I get to that not happy ending, I'm I'm
- 31:24maybe like sad, but I'm like OK, I get it.
- 31:27Like I get it. I don't want to spoil other
- 31:29dramas, but there are plenty of dramas in K Drama Land that
- 31:32didn't have happy endings for me but still worked because I kind
- 31:36of got why we got to where we were.
- 31:39And that's not how this drama left me feeling.
- 31:42And I'm annoyed because I think in the first part of the show I
- 31:45really felt like this writing and the directing was really
- 31:49self assured and I felt like this drama knew what it was
- 31:52doing and so I trusted it. And so then in the end when it
- 31:57happened, I was just like, OK, that is, that's not that.
- 32:01That was that was not where you were leading me.
- 32:03And now I feel really cheated because I trusted you.
- 32:06I thought that you knew what you were doing.
- 32:09Right. Yeah, and and I'm annoyed doubly
- 32:13because I was really invested at that point.
- 32:15And so at the end, what the emotions I want to feel are
- 32:19about the character and the drama.
- 32:21I don't want to feel frustrated and annoyed at the drama.
- 32:26Yeah, because it kind of really took away a lot of those and
- 32:29it's like super powerful performances in the end.
- 32:32You know what? Those.
- 32:33I remember. Episodes are just, you know, and
- 32:36that's what I want to be left with the feeling that those
- 32:38actors kind of, well, like those powerful, powerful scenes,
- 32:42that's what I want to be left with.
- 32:43Not with this, like, oh, you want to Chuck something in the
- 32:46TV? I will read you what I said in
- 32:50my review, which I evidently wrote 5 minutes after I finished
- 32:55watching the show. I said honestly, like what the
- 33:00fuck just happened? I'm 5 minutes removed from
- 33:03catching that swift Shakespearean ending and I'm
- 33:06just stunned, emotional, angry. And then I said a lot of stuff
- 33:13in a paragraph which I'm not going to read and then I said in
- 33:15all caps. However, I did not see that
- 33:17ending coming. Not by a mile.
- 33:20So I remember getting to that ending and not feeling that it
- 33:28was that it was going to going to happen at all, like it was
- 33:33came out of nowhere. But what I said at the end of
- 33:37the review was that it. I said I've maybe had an hour to
- 33:48process this because I guess it took an hour to write this and
- 33:52I've concluded that this drama was simply a tragedy and as such
- 33:56I can only accept what happened as it was always never going to
- 34:00have a happy ending. So I kind of took it as from day
- 34:06one this this was never going to be a ride off into the sunset
- 34:13story. So and it this sucks because I
- 34:17couldn't re watch the show and I didn't have time to read the
- 34:19recaps to to jump in this with my full chest.
- 34:23But basically, we don't see eye to eye on this ending like me
- 34:29five years ago and and you now don't don't see eye to eye on
- 34:33this ending because I kind of feel like even if I didn't see
- 34:37it coming, even if it was extremely crazy and sad and made
- 34:45me angry, it's the same anger that you feel at the end of a
- 34:51sort of Shakespearean tragedy where you're like, but why?
- 34:57Yeah, but like. Yeah, but for me, not like So I
- 35:02didn't expect a happy ending. I kind of felt like we couldn't
- 35:06get one quite early on in the show, actually.
- 35:10So you were. Not.
- 35:11Expecting. So I wasn't expecting a happy
- 35:12ending, and I was expecting a reveal that would mean that the
- 35:20happy ending couldn't happen. And so then I.
- 35:22Was resolved. Sort of Resolved a little more
- 35:25of a fizzle. Yeah, not a fizzle.
- 35:28But just like there is a reason why they can't be together.
- 35:30Like I and I get it. And then that reason, which had
- 35:36been foreshadowed, wasn't which we can discuss more properly at
- 35:41this point. No, absolutely.
- 35:42We're dancing. Around.
- 35:43Yeah, we are. Yeah.
- 35:43So, so yeah. We're not going to stick in the
- 35:46non spoiler section that much longer, but but I see what
- 35:50you're saying that like you didn't expect it to be a happy
- 35:52ending, but you didn't expect it to be.
- 35:55That end. Fireworks on the 4th of July
- 35:57type deal. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:00OK, fair enough. OK, So what I want to do right
- 36:05now is just have you rate the show out of Five Soldier bottles
- 36:09and we'll just get into this, the spoiler section.
- 36:12Yeah. OK.
- 36:13So it's yeah, it's interesting because I I went back to look at
- 36:16because I rate my dramas after I finished them and I actually, I
- 36:20think because of that ending rated it lower then I actually I
- 36:24think it deserves. So I went back and I re rated
- 36:26it. Oh OK.
- 36:27So I do a rating up to 10 and I do point fives as well.
- 36:32So I'm quite like there's a lot of nuance in the rating anyway.
- 36:36So when I finished it was a six and it's been re rated.
- 36:42It's been re rated as an 8. Because actually having had.
- 36:45Yeah, yeah, actually as having had it sit with me, I'm kind of
- 36:49like actually do you know what the performances, the actors,
- 36:55some of the things that it made me feel were like I was really
- 37:00taken with it. You know.
- 37:02So that's what's that's the bulk of the the and and like I just
- 37:06said like I think if they had tweaked certain things for me, I
- 37:10could have loved this show. It could have been a 10 for me.
- 37:14It had the ingredients to be a 10 because of, as I said, the
- 37:18performances and things that made me feel and like I can.
- 37:22I can not like an ending of a show so like my dearest but
- 37:28still love the show. So you know, like I because
- 37:31because of everything it made me feel like up until that point.
- 37:35Right, I'm totally following you.
- 37:37OK, so for me, I'm looking at my rating on the On the Blog
- 37:41review, which I'm leaning heavily on.
- 37:44I gave it a four out of five. OK, so we've actually ended up
- 37:47in the same place. We're in the same vicinity.
- 37:50Yeah we are in the same vicinity and that star is probably for
- 37:53all of the nitpicks and possibly the the resentment I feel
- 37:57towards the ending. But yeah I think we're we're in
- 38:00the ballpark you know with our ratings.
- 38:03So four to five sold you bottles.
- 38:06I had the rewatch value cuz I gave a rewatch value on on my
- 38:09blog reviews down at two out of five stars and I would say
- 38:13that's very accurate because I have not rewatched it in the
- 38:16last five years so. I would not watch rewatch this
- 38:20drama, right? That's good.
- 38:22All right. So we're just going to, we're
- 38:26going to get into the spoiler section.
- 38:27We'll see how much we spoil because again, I have the memory
- 38:31of a hamster. It might just be a little more
- 38:35talking about the ending and some characters and leaning on
- 38:40on Sarah's experience, having watched it just a few weeks ago.
- 38:44So without further. Ado last year, actually, just.
- 38:48Oh yeah, was it last year? My God, my memory.
- 38:51But it was the end of last year. So yeah, it was the end of last
- 38:54year. So, all right.
- 38:55Hopefully still more recent. Than, yeah, all right, spoilers,
- 39:00spoilers right after this. Excuse me, I can't chat.
- 39:04I can't chat, yeah, no. I'm sorry.
- 39:11Discoursing shit. What?
- 39:14All right, we're on the other side of spoilers, so we're just
- 39:16going to maybe jump back in on that ending, possibly, and talk
- 39:21through why Sarah feels the way that she feels and maybe how why
- 39:26I feel the way that I feel, if I can articulate it with any
- 39:31possible memory that I have. So why don't you just kind of
- 39:34walk us through it? So I'm going to start with
- 39:37saying, did you watch the Japanese drama, the original?
- 39:39And did you know anything about it when you oh?
- 39:41No, no, no. Yeah, so me, me neither.
- 39:44Oh, OK, perfect. That was my next question, but I
- 39:49read the synopsis and I looked at the poster for the Japanese
- 39:52show. Identical.
- 39:54Yes. Not, not that the poster was
- 39:56identical. The atmosphere and vibe of the
- 40:00poster was identical to this one.
- 40:02Yeah. And the synopsis is the same.
- 40:06Except for the ending, right? No, I I didn't.
- 40:08I didn't see. Anything.
- 40:09OK, so did. You look up the Japanese ending.
- 40:12Yeah, so my understanding. Oh, good.
- 40:14Oh. Tell me so.
- 40:15My understanding in the Japanese drama is that they are
- 40:19biological brothers and sisters. Fuck out of here.
- 40:22Yeah. No.
- 40:24Yeah, No. Yes.
- 40:26So that's why the Japanese drama, for me, the ending makes
- 40:30more sense that it is logical. This is why they can't be
- 40:36together. This is why, you know people
- 40:39does all of the stuff that he does to keep them to part.
- 40:44That makes a lot more sense. And that's where I I mean I kind
- 40:47of was warring with myself because I was a bit like this is
- 40:50seems to be what you're suggesting to me because they
- 40:52spent like him and tack have multiples like conversations
- 40:56where they're both like they can't be together they can't be
- 40:58together and you're like why why can't they be together unless oh
- 41:02they can't be together And then you know when like evil person
- 41:06that was like the evil Princess in my dearest like she's always
- 41:08the evil person she's she's telling the the very rich like
- 41:13Chebol sister was saying she's your sister.
- 41:18Yeah, she says. She's.
- 41:19She says You're you're. And that's when I thought, fuck
- 41:22shit, she. Says she's like a fellow, like
- 41:25sociopath. She says that his father was a
- 41:30murderer, which is true, and that they're biological brother
- 41:35and sister, which in this the K drama that's not true, but in
- 41:40the J drama it is true. Yes, which kind of makes more
- 41:45sense, right? It makes way more sense.
- 41:48Part of me a bit like an. Incestuous relationship and he
- 41:51can't be together. Yeah, exactly.
- 41:53But then I was really like, is K drama really going with incest?
- 41:57Like, really like, I just couldn't see it, right?
- 42:01Like just couldn't see that they would do incest in a in a in a
- 42:05actual studio network. This isn't that.
- 42:06Like, this is before. Like streaming could do like
- 42:09ultraviolence, like stuff that, you know, you wouldn't show on
- 42:11like network TV. This is proper network TV show.
- 42:14So I was like, are they really going with the incest?
- 42:16It was really strong with my brain.
- 42:17And then I felt like, so to me it felt like the show bottled
- 42:21it, right? So it bottled doing the incest.
- 42:24Or maybe it didn't bottle it, but it couldn't for cultural
- 42:27reasons do incest, but that it still then wanted to stay in the
- 42:32style of the show or wanted to keep like faith to the original.
- 42:37But then in so doing like didn't change the logic enough, you
- 42:41know, so they didn't change enough like.
- 42:44So I wish that basically two things either say, screw it, we
- 42:49can't go with the incest, so we need to do something different.
- 42:53Let's just actually give them a happy ending.
- 42:56Like let's just like let's let's try and do a happy ending or you
- 43:00fix the logic of the rest of the show to make it make sense.
- 43:04So then key things like why the why the fuck is he stabbing this
- 43:08guy? Like why is he walking across
- 43:10this like this, this, this heart, this road.
- 43:13And just as a policeman stabbing this guy like I just, you know,
- 43:18like it made more sense, I guess.
- 43:20If he knew who he was, but he knew that he was, he knew all
- 43:26along who he was. And he knew all along he was not
- 43:29the biological brother of Jin Gang.
- 43:33OK, so then that's what? So I have.
- 43:35So I have here in my, in my review, a whole paragraph.
- 43:43A lot of it doesn't make sense to me, but you're touching on
- 43:45something that I said in this paragraph.
- 43:47So I have literally Burp. I'm just going to read it.
- 43:50It's verbatim. It's not that long.
- 43:52I'm going to skip over the bulk of the melodrama involving 1.
- 43:55Mooyoung recovers his memories. Moo Mooyoung.
- 44:03I need to make sure these characters are all lined up just
- 44:06in case, because it's hard to. So that's Sewinguk's characters.
- 44:09So Sewinguk's character recovers his memories. 2 Jinguk stabs
- 44:14Sewinguk's character in the freaking St. like a psycho.
- 44:17This is All in all caps. That's what you're referring to?
- 44:20Yes, yes, I. I was reeling as well, like this
- 44:26is an all caps for me. I don't know.
- 44:29I that that's melodrama that I didn't.
- 44:31I was just skipping over. I was like, I don't even want to
- 44:33talk about that necessarily in detail because that's fucking
- 44:36wild. Three Moo Young, which is sewing
- 44:40this character, confronts Jinguk at gunpoint about him killing
- 44:45his father. Yep.
- 44:49And then I already read this part, say it on the fellows like
- 44:52sociopath tells MU Young about his father being a murderer and
- 44:55Jin Gong Jin Kong being the biological sister, which is
- 44:59false in this case. But all of this melodrama just
- 45:06compounding and it doesn't make sense.
- 45:11It doesn't make sense that the cop brother what's what's to
- 45:19happen in the street? Yeah, and also because what
- 45:22doesn't make sense, right, is that they spend so much of this
- 45:24drama building up his back story that he is a dedicated cop that
- 45:29he's looked down upon by everybody else in the police
- 45:33station because. He's so straight laced.
- 45:34Because he's so straight laced, he's dogged.
- 45:36He's determined he has to find the truth, but he doesn't find
- 45:39the truth about this thing, and he's so he needs so he is
- 45:44dedicated to finding out secrets, but then spends all of
- 45:49his drama keeping secrets from the sister that he apparently
- 45:53loves more than anything else in the world.
- 45:56He is dedicated to unearthing secrets and to finding out
- 46:00information about things. But he's a.
- 46:02Liar, But yeah, but is himself a liar?
- 46:05And then also like doesn't find out everything about so Ingall's
- 46:09character before stabbing him in the.
- 46:12Just like This is why I got to the end of it.
- 46:15I'm just like basically this whole thing could have been
- 46:18prevented if if Jingle could just been honest from the
- 46:24beginning and that kind of that being the reason why they both
- 46:29end up dead is. Just.
- 46:31I can't do it. I can't do it.
- 46:34I'm just like, you know, if fate.
- 46:36If fate meant that they can't be together, I can handle that.
- 46:39But if they can't be together because this one guy didn't tell
- 46:42them, like, basically communication is the reason why
- 46:46they're dead. I'm just like no, but it's but.
- 46:49I see what you're saying that if they went with the J drama, it
- 46:53would make sense that if he was trying to keep the secret that
- 46:56their brother and sister maybe, maybe, Yeah.
- 47:02Again, I would. I would probably lead with that.
- 47:04I'd be like you can't be together because you're brother
- 47:09and sister. But hey, isn't it nice that
- 47:13you've got a real brother and a real sister?
- 47:15But. Hey, family reunion.
- 47:20It's If you can't already tell and you've never watched the
- 47:23show and you're just in the spoiler section for shifts and
- 47:25gigs. This is it's a melodrama.
- 47:29It might have a little mock Jang elements in it.
- 47:31It's it's just it's an adaptation of AJ drama that is a
- 47:34little unhinged. OK, obviously, but it's really
- 47:38well done up to certain points. OK is I think the point we're
- 47:42trying to make and we're trying to make sense of some stuff that
- 47:47they changed and some stuff that maybe they didn't change.
- 47:50We're not sure, but it literally because the character, it has
- 47:55been set up in such a way. The cop brother has been set up
- 47:58in such a way when he does certain things later on in the
- 48:01show, it's going against character in such a way as to be
- 48:05like you're murdering the character.
- 48:08Yeah, yeah, Because I really liked him.
- 48:11I really liked him. I thought, what a great adoptive
- 48:15brother basically, right, Because he's not her real
- 48:17brother. What a great brother.
- 48:18He's been like he's brought her up.
- 48:20He's done such a great job of bringing her up.
- 48:22She's such a, she's such a lovely, warm person despite, you
- 48:26know, that awful up, you know start of her life.
- 48:30And he's like I said, he's got this great relationship with
- 48:32Tack and he's like really, you know, he's he's like the
- 48:35underdog in the police station. So I was really rooting for him.
- 48:39So then in the back of the drama, when he does all these
- 48:41things, he's just like what? Why have you done this to this
- 48:47character? Because the other thing that
- 48:50really annoyed me with him was that he just like he just really
- 48:53hated Mooyong to. It was a it was a loathing.
- 48:57Yeah, it was a loathing and and I think I under thought, sorry,
- 49:02I thought I understood the motives for him hating him so
- 49:05much. But then as more stuff gets
- 49:07revealed, the more you're, like really puzzled.
- 49:09Because thing is like, he feels really sorry for Jinggang
- 49:13because of everything that happened with her parents.
- 49:15But basically the same thing happened with MU Yong.
- 49:18So why do you not feel sorry for him?
- 49:20You know, like, it's like he got his life wrecked, you know, for
- 49:23no fault of his own. But she deserves, like all of
- 49:27the sympathy in the world, and he deserves, like nothing but
- 49:30your hatred. I just couldn't.
- 49:33He It's uneven, the application of his pity.
- 49:39Yeah, it is. And also because he was the one
- 49:42responsible for Jin Gang. So she she got an amazing life
- 49:46and became the person she was because of him.
- 49:49We're sewing guok. He he's like, what would have
- 49:52happened to her had she not had him in her life, you know,
- 49:56because he had no one in his life.
- 49:58And so it's not, it's not surprising he's ended up where
- 50:01he's. I mean, if anything, he should
- 50:02be congratulated, actually, for being still kind of, like kind
- 50:04of sane. But he gets no sympathy, just
- 50:08gets stabbed. It's so unhinged.
- 50:12So I have here in this review in episode 10.
- 50:17So first of all, there's 16 episodes, so this is a little
- 50:19little after the halfway point. In episode 10, Jing Kong, which
- 50:24is Chung's woman's character, again tells Jinguk, the brother,
- 50:28that she won't break up with MU Yong Sawinguk.
- 50:32And when the brother starts on another rant to make her feel
- 50:35guilty, she unleashes her true feelings about how she's felt,
- 50:38suffocated by his mere presence since her adolescence and so
- 50:43sorry toward him because she owes him so much.
- 50:47Thak later tells her to apologize for hurting his
- 50:51feelings, and Jean Kong, Jung Soo Min's character agrees that
- 50:56she was in the wrong. And I said in my review what?
- 51:02Why is Jing Kong at fault for telling her true feelings and
- 51:06saying some hurtful things for a change?
- 51:08Jing Cook spouts whatever the hell he wants.
- 51:11It's true, Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:14And I vaguely remember this. I don't fully remember this part
- 51:17in the show, but these feelings that I felt are still there
- 51:22where this like unevenness between them, where he can
- 51:29basically use her as this emotional battering like a an
- 51:37emotional punching bag. That, and also guilt, Alea,
- 51:41right? Yeah, she's, you know, he's
- 51:43allaying his own guilt. For, for.
- 51:44For. For pulling the trigger.
- 51:46Yes, but she can't call him on his bullshit and sort of
- 51:52question the validity of their relationship.
- 51:56Yeah. In fact, she agrees with the
- 52:00the, you know, sidekick tack and says, yeah, I do need to
- 52:04apologize because I was wrong to to say all this truthful but
- 52:10hurtful, hurtful stuff for once in my life.
- 52:14And I was like, I don't agree with that at all.
- 52:18Yeah, I think it bothered me less because it's probably quite
- 52:20a confusion thing. Very good point.
- 52:24Because he's because he's our older brother.
- 52:26So you you kind of like in a Confucian relationship.
- 52:29That's the way it goes. Like your mum can tell you
- 52:32whatever the hell she wants about everything that's wrong
- 52:34with you, but you can't do that to your mum because she's, you
- 52:37know, older in the pecking order than you are.
- 52:39And so if you do ever say something that upsets or is too
- 52:45truthful and not diplomatic, you are expected to apologize.
- 52:50That is the way it goes. You you have to kind of take it.
- 52:53That is kind of your role. That's an excellent point.
- 52:58And if you haven't listened to, I think it's two episodes right
- 53:03now that you guys have out on the Confucianism.
- 53:06Yes, yes. On Afternoon to Ask podcast,
- 53:09please go and listen to them 'cause they are so informative
- 53:13and really fun and entertaining to listen to.
- 53:17Thanks. Jess Yeah, I had a great time
- 53:18listening to them. So that's a excellent point that
- 53:20I'm an international fan and you're of Asian descent.
- 53:24So like you have a a different experience to Confucianism than
- 53:27I do. And so you probably felt
- 53:29differently about this scene in episode 10 and the fallout of
- 53:33the scene than I did. Although, although why the fact
- 53:39specific thing didn't bug me in that way, I do feel the same way
- 53:42as you in that like we're still supposed to celebrate him as a
- 53:45really great brother despite the fact that he he doesn't allow
- 53:51her to herself really. And she is suffocated and she
- 53:54is, she must feel like she's constantly having to be grateful
- 53:59to him. Yeah, so, so again, this is that
- 54:03kind of thing with this, this unevenness of this drama where,
- 54:07you know, like I started to like I started off really liking this
- 54:10character and then the back off just began to really just like
- 54:14him. And that kind of annoyed me as
- 54:17well, because I felt a bit like the drama still wanted me to
- 54:20like him. That's a great point, that the
- 54:25drama was on his side, the writing, the spirit of the drama
- 54:30was on his side, and as an audience member, you're like,
- 54:32but why, yeah. But why?
- 54:34Because logically. Why doesn't?
- 54:36Yeah, so we talked about what Moo Yung so Sewinguk's character
- 54:42does vaguely. Do you want to talk about?
- 54:46Because I don't remember the details.
- 54:47I just remember the broad strokes, what he does to the
- 54:50rich girl Sangha. Yeah, I mean he basically, I'm
- 54:54not going to go into the detail either because I don't know, I
- 54:57don't know that I would be able to do it justice.
- 54:59But effectively he decides, I mean, we start off right.
- 55:04She's engaged to a really rich Chebol person at the start.
- 55:09And he overhears the conversation between them.
- 55:14And I think at that point, I guess we he just decides, do you
- 55:18know what? Like, I could, I could get this
- 55:20Chebol girl. Like I could get her, you know,
- 55:22I could get her away from this fiance.
- 55:25And he just does his womanizing tricks like he you feel like
- 55:30this is not the first time he's done this, you know, he just
- 55:33thought it's a challenge to see if I can get her to like me.
- 55:38And it was really easy. And I remember one of the things
- 55:44like, because I think the drama sets him off as a red flag.
- 55:48But you like we discussed right at the start, you want to find
- 55:51the reasons why he's a red flag. And you want to find like,
- 55:54reasons to sympathize with him and and find the goodness in him
- 55:58really early on, right? Like really early on the drama
- 56:01does this. And then I remember she's in the
- 56:04car and she tells him, I looked up your friend that you said
- 56:10went to this college and he's never been there.
- 56:13And then Sewing got like, he just, he's been caught out,
- 56:18right? He has lied.
- 56:19His friend didn't go to college and he's just like, he just
- 56:22blinks. He's no reaction whatsoever.
- 56:24Like, it's no big. Not only that, but he throws it
- 56:28back on us. He gaslights her, basically
- 56:30throws it back on her, gaslights her and says you're wrong.
- 56:34He does go to that college, he goes to this college, this other
- 56:37college. I don't know what the difference
- 56:38is, but anyway, he gaslights her and he does it really calmly,
- 56:42really cruelly. And I that's like kind of why I
- 56:47like the drama. Because it never let me settle
- 56:49into deciding whether or not this character, this main lead,
- 56:52was somebody I could or could not root for.
- 56:55Because all the time they're like wrong footing me because I
- 56:57was just like, oh shit, that's a really horrible thing to do.
- 57:00Like it's a really psychotic thing to do.
- 57:02Like, you know, lie so much and then gaslight her so, so you
- 57:06could see also you could really feel like why someone as
- 57:09sheltered as her, she's lived such a sheltered upbringing
- 57:12would fall so badly for this guy and he was just constantly
- 57:17giving her a little bit of rope and then tugging, tugging.
- 57:20This is why I said, like, he's a cat with a toy.
- 57:22It's like every time she kind of rolled away a little bit, he'd
- 57:24be like, I'm going to do a little bit to make you come back
- 57:27a little bit and then I'm just going to ignore you again.
- 57:31And it was just that constant backwards and forwards and
- 57:33backwards and forwards and then in the end they're in this car
- 57:37together, right? And it's not completely obvious
- 57:40to me that he didn't she she, no, she's not sorry.
- 57:46They're not in a car together. They're they're basically,
- 57:48they're all involved in the car crash together.
- 57:50She's driving like a lunatic and because of him, because of
- 57:56emotions that he's wound up in her and she ends up, she
- 58:00doesn't, she ends up dying, right?
- 58:02She dies. Yeah, yeah, Yeah.
- 58:04Yeah, and a lot of it is, you know, because he's been kind of
- 58:09puppet stringing how long? I have here, this is my this is
- 58:17my review. So I said here song as death I
- 58:22this has to do with the specificity here and I was
- 58:24wondering if you were going to mention it.
- 58:25So hopefully this will trigger something and you'll maybe
- 58:29you'll answer this question for me because I it's almost an
- 58:32unanswerable question. So I said Sunga's death.
- 58:35I couldn't understand the line. Don't get caught.
- 58:39Moo Young says this to Sunga and then they immediately crashed.
- 58:43Did he say this to her to distract her from driving?
- 58:46Did he say this more to himself? Did he tell her this sincerely?
- 58:51It was top of mind again when the evil said on the other.
- 58:55Like sociopath in the show said she was just tickled by his
- 58:59statement when she heard it on the black box footage.
- 59:02Why did he even think to tell her in that moment not to get
- 59:05caught? What was up with this?
- 59:07We'll never be taken alive mentality.
- 59:10Am I missing something? So that's it.
- 59:14What it What do you think of that?
- 59:16I don't know. I don't know.
- 59:17What to say? I agree with you.
- 59:19I think there was a real ambivalence to what he meant by
- 59:22that line. I think it was kind of similar
- 59:25to his whole role through the drama, right?
- 59:26It's a lot of ambivalence of like, what did you actually
- 59:29mean? What did you actually think?
- 59:30I mean, for me, I felt like he it was just the final winding
- 59:33her up, like keep driving like so fast and erratically.
- 59:39Don't you don't? Yeah, in the rain.
- 59:41Don't get caught. Like, please keep, Because his
- 59:44whole thing, his whole shtick, I think from the beginning was
- 59:46like, you're some sheltered rich girl that doesn't know what real
- 59:50life is. And so you need to kind of live
- 59:52outside of your comfort zone and know what it's like to be in the
- 59:55real world. And I felt like that was him
- 59:58goading her to just be like, stop being so safe.
- 1:00:01Don't be that safe girl again. I know.
- 1:00:04Live, live your life. Like take risks.
- 1:00:08And that's for me. What?
- 1:00:10So that's why that is the most red.
- 1:00:13One of the most red flag things he does in the whole drama is
- 1:00:16his relationship with her and what he did to her. 100%, Yeah,
- 1:00:20100% Because he's not. He doesn't date that girl with
- 1:00:24any real sincerity at all. No, not at.
- 1:00:27All at all. That's.
- 1:00:28And that girl, that that song character that we keep
- 1:00:31referencing was Jean Kong's best friend.
- 1:00:36Yes, well supposed best friend. Supposed best friend?
- 1:00:39Whatever. But she and that girl was likely
- 1:00:43infatuated with him. And you know, there's a lot of
- 1:00:46stuff that flies in the face of K Drama Rules like Sewing Gook's
- 1:00:50character has sex with her and that's like a no no, right
- 1:00:55that's kind of edgy in K Drama Land.
- 1:00:58And that's way before you know this entire relationship blows
- 1:01:03up in their faces with the car crash in the rain.
- 1:01:05And obviously MU Young, that character survives.
- 1:01:11I say here he signs a non disclosure from her family as
- 1:01:13soon as he recovers and easily walks away with some cash.
- 1:01:16No remorse, no regret, no mourning.
- 1:01:20Like it was nothing for him. And actually also like Ching
- 1:01:25Kong as well, like, so I found it really confusing because the
- 1:01:28drama seemed to like they were kind of acquaintances.
- 1:01:31I thought at the start and then in the middle of the drama when
- 1:01:34all this kind of like mini melodrama was happening, they
- 1:01:37were supposed to be really good friends.
- 1:01:39And then and then it. Was like, what are we?
- 1:01:43Yeah, but then she dies, and Ching Kong's not really that.
- 1:01:47I felt like she wasn't really that.
- 1:01:48Right, right, right. Yeah, it's not that deep.
- 1:01:51No. OK, but this whole thing made at
- 1:01:56night. My review.
- 1:01:57I'd say he was basically a clinical sociopath, and I don't
- 1:02:03even think they use that term anymore.
- 1:02:04I think they medical professional or, you know,
- 1:02:09psycho. Psycho.
- 1:02:11What do they call it? Psychiatrist.
- 1:02:13Psychiatrists or psychologists or medical professionals, they
- 1:02:17use the term antisocial personality disorder and that is
- 1:02:22what he had. I feel like some of the
- 1:02:26behavioural traits of antisocial personality disorder are
- 1:02:31antisocial behaviour, deceitfulness, hostility,
- 1:02:35irresponsibility, manipulative, manipulativeness, risk taking
- 1:02:40behaviors, aggression, impulsivity, irritability or
- 1:02:43lack of restraint. And some of the mood traits are
- 1:02:48anger, boredom or general discontent.
- 1:02:52And this matches Moo Young to AT.
- 1:02:57That is basically his character. That is his character to AT the
- 1:03:02first thing that Jean Kong, which is Chung Soman's
- 1:03:08character, teaches Mooyong is how to feel and how to be human.
- 1:03:14And even despite the fact that he spent his whole life
- 1:03:19observing people, he's removed from all of his remote emotions.
- 1:03:24And what I say in my review is anything that caught his
- 1:03:28interest, he pursued until he got bored again.
- 1:03:31And it's a little game he kept playing until Song LA's death,
- 1:03:35which is when basically this romance sort of gets going with
- 1:03:40him and Jung Selman's character. Yeah, so I, you know, I actually
- 1:03:47really. So putting aside the Sungai
- 1:03:49thing, which to be fair, the drama makes us do anyway.
- 1:03:52So he's like, oh, she's you know that?
- 1:03:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:54They're like, we'll close the book on that.
- 1:03:57I had to be fair, like I was happy to follow it because I'm
- 1:03:59just like, oh, I kind of want to like this guy.
- 1:04:02And I can't if I dwell too much on what he did to her anyway.
- 1:04:04So I did really like that they went from this really snippy
- 1:04:09enemies kind of like relationship to this gradual and
- 1:04:13I felt pretty authentic falling for each other.
- 1:04:17And although we don't get a lot of, I mean, this is not a
- 1:04:21romance drama by any means. Right, I don't consider this
- 1:04:23somehow. Yes.
- 1:04:24So although we do still get, you know, plenty of their scenes
- 1:04:28together and they're really lovely, they're really some of
- 1:04:31them are really. It's magical.
- 1:04:33Yeah, it is. And they really feel like, I
- 1:04:35think you said it earlier, like they're soul connected and they
- 1:04:38really made us feel that way and they have some really great skin
- 1:04:41ship. It really felt sexy scenes
- 1:04:43together. Yes, in a in a way that you
- 1:04:46don't even see in today's dramas, I feel.
- 1:04:50Yeah, I definitely. And actually, for me, of all of
- 1:04:53I mean, I've only seen Johnson in in this, and because this is
- 1:04:57my first life in the alchemy of soul, I actually feel like this
- 1:04:59is her best chemistry and her best sexual chemistry with
- 1:05:02somebody. I can agree with that.
- 1:05:04I can. I can get behind that statement.
- 1:05:07For sure. And I feel like she turned it on
- 1:05:09specifically with SO and Gook as well because I also really liked
- 1:05:12in contrast because she has this, she dates this other
- 1:05:16policeman. Right.
- 1:05:16This other policeman called Chorong for a while.
- 1:05:19He's he's basically introduced by the brother as another tactic
- 1:05:23to try and get her to not. That's right.
- 1:05:26That's right. He was like, why don't you,
- 1:05:27like, meet this guy instead? And she actually does.
- 1:05:31It yes, she does. And they have these dates, but I
- 1:05:34love that she has just so zero chemistry with this guy, right?
- 1:05:39Zero chemistry whatsoever. There was like, no zinginess.
- 1:05:43There's just, it's just beige. And I really liked that
- 1:05:46contrast. Like.
- 1:05:47I really thought, like, it was really skillful acting on her
- 1:05:51heart, on her behalf because you could see the difference in, you
- 1:05:55know, how Moo Young made her feel because, you know, whether
- 1:05:58she hated him or loved him, he made her feel all the time.
- 1:06:02Whereas with the with the other policemen, she's just like she's
- 1:06:06just behind, you know, a a glass.
- 1:06:10Yeah, she's really polite. Yeah.
- 1:06:11She's really like she's not moved at all in either way.
- 1:06:15Yeah, yes, I said. I'm just like, I can't believe I
- 1:06:22wrote this. I said I actually looked at a
- 1:06:26non existent camera office style.
- 1:06:30When sewing. Good.
- 1:06:31Delivered the line. I want to sleep with you.
- 1:06:33Yes. Do you remember that line?
- 1:06:37OK, OK. What a great like, 'cause they
- 1:06:40have sex and their foreplay is super sweet, 'cause they're like
- 1:06:44playfully. I could see it in my hand.
- 1:06:47They're like sitting on the bed and they're playfully removing
- 1:06:51each other's clothes. Yes, yeah.
- 1:06:54And it's so there's so much like intimacy and chemistry.
- 1:06:58And it's like, it's like you said zinginess between them and
- 1:07:01you're just like, this is like amazing.
- 1:07:04It's so good. It is, yeah.
- 1:07:09So. And then all hell breaks loose.
- 1:07:12It does. I can't.
- 1:07:18Oh, I have a a nice thought here again because I'm like using me,
- 1:07:25my thoughts from five years ago to like power through this.
- 1:07:29I apologize. But I also said that MU Young
- 1:07:35shows her this family portrait that he drew in crayon as a
- 1:07:39child, saying that he imagines himself as a lost boy instead of
- 1:07:43an abandoned child. Yes.
- 1:07:46And I found so much meaning in that because the distinction was
- 1:07:51very poetic to me. I said to shield himself from
- 1:07:54further heartbreak. He keeps hoping that he's just
- 1:07:57been misplaced, lost, instead of actively abandoned by his
- 1:08:01parents, his father especially. And then I'm I start musing at
- 1:08:05the end of this and I'm like, damn, I don't know if I can
- 1:08:07write that like this now. I say, if he's lost, if he's a
- 1:08:10lost boy. Is he the Peter Pan variety?
- 1:08:13The ones who have a ton of agency and choose not to be
- 1:08:16found? But I digress.
- 1:08:20Interesting. Yeah.
- 1:08:22So I don't know if you've had any thoughts about the family
- 1:08:25portrait and him like shielding himself from a little bit of
- 1:08:30that feeling aspect. Definitely.
- 1:08:34I mean, I do think that's what the drama, and it had to, in a
- 1:08:37way, right? To to keep us in this
- 1:08:39ambivalence of wanting to love this male lead but not being
- 1:08:43able to love this maldeed was so much about fleshing out that
- 1:08:47emotion, that huge emotional crater of a wound that he's
- 1:08:51carrying around. And we see this crayon picture a
- 1:08:54lot, right? It's used a lot.
- 1:08:56It's it's in lots and lots of scenes.
- 1:08:59And we are in typical K drama style, but done very well given
- 1:09:05lots of partial flashbacks as we piece to, you know, together.
- 1:09:09And he pieces together because obviously, as you said, he lost
- 1:09:11his memory, his background on what happened and what really
- 1:09:14happened. And and I think they do this so
- 1:09:17well because they really. Yeah, they really just show what
- 1:09:22a broken boy he is. And and I think especially when,
- 1:09:27you know, she discovers that his, that, like scabby rooftop
- 1:09:30apartment that he lives in has got like, no cooking utensils.
- 1:09:35And so then they have this supermarket shopping scene where
- 1:09:38she's basically. Just buying stuff, Yeah, and
- 1:09:41then you're drogging my memory when?
- 1:09:43You, Yeah. And then she says this line
- 1:09:45about something like you, you have to have rice in your house,
- 1:09:49You have to eat. You know, you have to like home.
- 1:09:53Creation of home is about having a home cooked meal and is about
- 1:09:57having rice in your ice cooker ready to eat.
- 1:09:59And and I think that's the first time he's had a home, right.
- 1:10:05So it's really, really, really it just creates such an
- 1:10:10emotional feeling in you. And then when they have their
- 1:10:12breakup. So you know when he, he says
- 1:10:14he's going to split up with her and he does that kind of like
- 1:10:19kind of sacrificial thing of like, I'm gonna break up with
- 1:10:21you and pretend that I don't love you anymore, but actually
- 1:10:24I'm doing it for you type thing. And then he's kind of like in
- 1:10:29his apartment, with all the cooking utensils that she
- 1:10:31bought, and he just. She's everywhere, yeah.
- 1:10:35And you're just like, oh, when you just want to give him a big
- 1:10:37hug Because by that point, by that point, you've kind of
- 1:10:40forgiven all of his red flagness.
- 1:10:41You're just like, he's just a walking emotional wounds.
- 1:10:44You're like he couldn't help it. He's like a yellow flag.
- 1:10:47Now I maybe, I don't know. So I don't even remember exactly
- 1:10:57how the bad guys end up at this Cabin in the Woods type thing at
- 1:11:02the end of the show. But they get shot and die
- 1:11:10together and that's the ending that we get versus their brother
- 1:11:18and sister or some other version that was not written.
- 1:11:28And they never get to live the rest of their lives together.
- 1:11:31They die where their parents died, and it's just a lot of
- 1:11:38like, murder and sociopaths. I'm sorry, antisocial
- 1:11:42personality disorder and glimpses of redemption and a
- 1:11:48very depressing ending. And I don't know if you had any,
- 1:11:56like other thoughts about the ending or any other
- 1:12:00clarifications that you wanted to make.
- 1:12:02Yeah, yeah, I think, I think for me there.
- 1:12:05Were a few things. Like I felt.
- 1:12:07I remember when I was watching it feeling like I think as soon
- 1:12:11as he shot the rich chaebol sister, that's when I thought
- 1:12:17OK, like I had a little bit of hope that there might possibly
- 1:12:21be a happy ending for those two. And then when he shot her, I was
- 1:12:25like OK that's done. Like, we're not getting one.
- 1:12:28And and to be honest, like the post, that post, that scene, the
- 1:12:33scene when he's the scene where she's planted the seed, that
- 1:12:36Jing Gong is his real sister, are some of the best scenes that
- 1:12:41Sewing Book has ever, ever done. Like he is in his rooftop
- 1:12:46apartment and he's just broken, devastated.
- 1:12:50And so you can kind of see also when she's goading him and
- 1:12:54goading him because she, she has a great set of lines, the
- 1:12:58chaebol rich sister, where she's really winding him up and then,
- 1:13:02you know, obviously ends with a bullet in her.
- 1:13:05You can totally see why he got to that point, you know.
- 1:13:09So even at that point when you're just like, it's bad, he
- 1:13:13shot someone. I think we as the audience were
- 1:13:16like, oh, that was your chance. Like you you've now, like, we
- 1:13:22totally know why you did this. But now you've lost your chance
- 1:13:25at at being with her now, right. This is this kind of, this is
- 1:13:30when this kind of heavy cloud of dread started to kind of descend
- 1:13:34on the show. And you brought it.
- 1:13:35But I remember feeling like right at the end, even when
- 1:13:39they're in that cabin and he's already shot this chaebol
- 1:13:42sister, and he's like a wanted criminal now.
- 1:13:45And there was still like, a little bit of me was like, well,
- 1:13:49maybe she could wait for him, like after he gets out of prison
- 1:13:53and they're really old and they could finally peak, you know
- 1:13:56what I mean? Even then, even then I was like
- 1:13:59there was a little bit of me despite, as I said, starting
- 1:14:02this drama pretty much thinking there would not be a happy
- 1:14:04ending. I think by then I was still even
- 1:14:06like, maybe they could. And then cushioning the blow a
- 1:14:09bit. Yeah, cushioning the blow.
- 1:14:10And then no. We had to have this kind of like
- 1:14:15RJ, kind of it. It was very Romeo and.
- 1:14:19Giulietti. Yeah, he's died.
- 1:14:21Therefore I should die type thing.
- 1:14:23Because even then I was like, you don't have to die,
- 1:14:25Chinggang. Like you, I I get that you're so
- 1:14:28connected with the sky, but you're still, you know, an
- 1:14:33independent, feisty woman in your own right.
- 1:14:36So that was another thing that I was a bit like, I'm not
- 1:14:39convinced she had to die. Like, I felt a bit, oh, sorry.
- 1:14:42And then the other thing to remember that Jarred me as well
- 1:14:45was that post finding out that Che Boris's rich sister has died
- 1:14:51and there's question marks over who killed him.
- 1:14:54I remember Xin Gang is like, no, it's not Moo Yong.
- 1:15:00It couldn't be Moo Yong. Oh, that's right.
- 1:15:03She was like, in denial. Yes, she's in denial, but Gomin
- 1:15:06Shi's character. Like Moo Yong's friend, the one
- 1:15:11that was also like a fellow psychopathic or sociopath
- 1:15:13rather, that both went to this, you know, psychiatrist.
- 1:15:17She's basically like, she knows who he is and she gets like that
- 1:15:24he could be this person. So then I remember it feeling
- 1:15:27like it Jarred a little bit with me because it was a bit like, if
- 1:15:30he's someone you love so well, so much and a soul connected
- 1:15:36with, like, why do you not also know that this is, this is his
- 1:15:40personality too, that he's capable of being this person?
- 1:15:43Like, it's like you fell in love.
- 1:15:45Did you fall in love with The Mirage?
- 1:15:47Like, did you fall in love with somebody that you had made-up in
- 1:15:50your mind, actually, that you could be so vehement and adamant
- 1:15:54that he did not kill this woman, when clearly throughout the
- 1:15:59whole drama we've seen, he could actually totally, completely
- 1:16:03murder someone. That is exactly who he is.
- 1:16:06Yeah, I. I don't know what the answer is,
- 1:16:09but I I see where you're coming from that she it's almost like a
- 1:16:15disconnect with the character because the character of John
- 1:16:21Suman, because someone's character showed her exactly who
- 1:16:27he was throughout and there was no question that he could have.
- 1:16:32Killed. Someone, I mean, kind of already
- 1:16:36did like. Indirectly, right, Right.
- 1:16:39And there was like a clean up job.
- 1:16:41That he had done earlier in the show as well, like he didn't
- 1:16:44murder somebody, but he cleaned it up.
- 1:16:47Yes. As what?
- 1:16:49Like that was like the. Intro to the whole show and.
- 1:16:52It's like, OK, if you can clean up a dead body and stage a
- 1:16:57scene. Like you can total stage a scene
- 1:17:00to make it look like a suicide. Yeah, yeah, you could.
- 1:17:03Totally. Murder somebody dude.
- 1:17:05Like that's. She knew all of this and she was
- 1:17:10still like, Oh no, I can't be. Him.
- 1:17:12No, I just found like, babe, I just just just.
- 1:17:15Jarred a little bit for me like I could I could see you know,
- 1:17:19like if her character had just been about praying that it
- 1:17:22wasn't him praying that, you know it had to do with him like
- 1:17:25that I get. But this whole like, oh, it's
- 1:17:27not him. He didn't do it thing.
- 1:17:29Was it like she was like, too? Sure, it was just.
- 1:17:31Yeah, it was just, it just Jarred.
- 1:17:33It was like. Do you actually know who you
- 1:17:35fall in love with? Because we do.
- 1:17:37Yeah. We're we're still cheering.
- 1:17:39We're still cheering. You guys on?
- 1:17:41But like, we know exactly who he is.
- 1:17:45Yeah, that's the the. Cabin in the Woods scene is very
- 1:17:48heavy. This is basically the last scene
- 1:17:51in the whole show. She pleads with him not to kill
- 1:17:54himself. She uses herself as leverage,
- 1:17:59puts the gun to her own head. He tells her to just go, and I
- 1:18:07have here in my review. She says Go where?
- 1:18:11And he replies to how it was before me, and she tearfully
- 1:18:16says, but you were with me from the beginning, and that I felt
- 1:18:23was very heavy. That was very telling that she
- 1:18:26almost can't envision herself without him because he was there
- 1:18:29always. Yeah, well, she said that quite
- 1:18:32a few times. Like, I think when you know,
- 1:18:35when her brother Jingle was trying to tell her to not be
- 1:18:38with him anymore, she'd said quite a few times.
- 1:18:40I'm I can't live without him. I can't live without him.
- 1:18:44And you really, really began to feel that.
- 1:18:47I think I do, too. Like, I believe her.
- 1:18:49Yeah. They did a good job of showing
- 1:18:51us why. She felt that way, yeah.
- 1:18:53There's like a codependency between them, yeah?
- 1:18:56That they develop and then she. Realizes who?
- 1:18:59He is. And their history together and
- 1:19:01stuff and it just sort of clicks and then they just died.
- 1:19:04Like they get killed like the Jiang family henchman secretary
- 1:19:12dude, who like, shoots them both dead.
- 1:19:14And that's the plot device. That's it.
- 1:19:16Like they? Die.
- 1:19:20It's just not it's. I don't think that.
- 1:19:23I don't think this. Drama's for everybody at all.
- 1:19:27I think if you're you know the for for if you're the hometown
- 1:19:31Cha cha cha person, don't watch this show at all.
- 1:19:38That's not, this is not for you. But if you're the Love Lies girl
- 1:19:44or maybe into some tomorrow with you, maybe is is a better, a
- 1:19:52little closer in tone to this this show.
- 1:19:56This is not light at all. It's definitely a melodrama and
- 1:20:00it doesn't have a happy ending. We just said like they die.
- 1:20:03It's just it's just tragic. Like they have a tragic back
- 1:20:07story. It's it's all the things.
- 1:20:10And the guy's toxic. He's a red flag.
- 1:20:13He said that over and over again.
- 1:20:15It's all the things, but it's incredibly interesting and it's
- 1:20:21a lot of K drama. Like this is like a very K drama
- 1:20:27Y show. It doesn't have a lot of Western
- 1:20:32influence, I would say like a lot of the shows we see today,
- 1:20:38OK, this is not a. Netflix output.
- 1:20:42At all. Yeah, it's very mellow.
- 1:20:45It's. Very mellow.
- 1:20:47And. It it just permeates the whole
- 1:20:50show. And if that's not your vibe, if
- 1:20:53you're a mood watcher, you got to wait, wait until you kind of
- 1:20:56feel it to watch this show. But I do feel like there's some
- 1:21:00merit in it. I feel like there's something to
- 1:21:03it. I feel like there's something
- 1:21:05about this pairing and the the machinations and the
- 1:21:12relationships of the show are just kind of like you can't look
- 1:21:16away at the train wreck of it. So I would.
- 1:21:22Recommend it, but it's not for. Everybody.
- 1:21:25No, I remember. When I first started it, I'd
- 1:21:30have forgotten who it was. Sorry, somebody commented on my
- 1:21:33feed and said I love this show but I never recommend this show
- 1:21:42because. Because.
- 1:21:44Because of what it is. So I'm really looking forward to
- 1:21:47seeing how you feel about it. And I remember thinking like,
- 1:21:50how does that work? That you would love a show but
- 1:21:53you can't ever recommend it. I feel that statement deeply.
- 1:21:57Yeah, yeah, but. Afterwards I was like, OK, I
- 1:21:59totally. Got it.
- 1:22:00I get it. I get it.
- 1:22:01I get it. I mean, I have.
- 1:22:03Actually recommended it, but it's to people.
- 1:22:04Whose drama tastes. I know already.
- 1:22:07You know like I've. I'm kind of.
- 1:22:08I'm feel confident that that they will like what I liked in
- 1:22:12it and that would be enough. Absolutely.
- 1:22:15Oh my God. It's worth noting I love.
- 1:22:17Angsty shows, and so do you. Yes, yes, we're angsty bitches.
- 1:22:22So this. Was like kind of in our
- 1:22:25wheelhouse. OK, if you're not an angsty
- 1:22:28person in any way, shape or form, this ain't for you.
- 1:22:31No, this is super angst in fact, actually.
- 1:22:34Right. So I actually went on a Reddit
- 1:22:36thread. Oh no.
- 1:22:38Of somebody? No, no, no.
- 1:22:39It was. It was for.
- 1:22:40Drama. If it was drama, Rex.
- 1:22:41So it was like, can someone recommend me an angsty drama?
- 1:22:45And then literally about 10 replies in a row was smilers
- 1:22:48left your eyes. It's perfect.
- 1:22:52I was like just a ticket. Yes, it's so true.
- 1:22:56It is full on, Full on. Angst.
- 1:22:58Well, it's. Full on.
- 1:22:59Angst there I. Mean there was a there was a
- 1:23:02chance that they could be brother and sister.
- 1:23:04It doesn't end up happening in this show, but in the J drama.
- 1:23:07Lo and behold there. If there's incestuous in there.
- 1:23:12Not in this version, though, no, if that.
- 1:23:15If that's your ick, it's not in here, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:20And then if it is then. Jay drama is where to go.
- 1:23:22And then they watch a dray drama.
- 1:23:24Yeah, yeah. Where?
- 1:23:25It would logically make more sense, right?
- 1:23:28Right. Anyway, I think I've come to the
- 1:23:31end of like, my memory and the end of what I had in my original
- 1:23:36blog review. So I guess that's the end of my
- 1:23:39notes. Do you have anything else you'd
- 1:23:41like to add about? The smile has left your eyes
- 1:23:43before we get out of here. No, I think that's I got to wrap
- 1:23:47it up as. Well, yeah.
- 1:23:48OK, perfect. I'm so glad we.
- 1:23:49Got to go through everything with as much detail as we could.
- 1:23:53And if you have anything else you'd like to say, if you're
- 1:23:57listening to this and you're like, they didn't talk about
- 1:23:58this, I swear to God, we just didn't remember it, OK?
- 1:24:02It's just the fact, the simple fact that a lot of things just
- 1:24:05didn't line up and we didn't remember.
- 1:24:09OK, I'm sorry, but feel free to reach out to us, OK?
- 1:24:14Reach out to us. I'm more than willing to look
- 1:24:17things up and actually read the recaps after the fact.
- 1:24:20I don't give a shit. I'll do whatever I can to to
- 1:24:23appease you guys. I feel terrible that I couldn't
- 1:24:27do the homework, basically for the assignment.
- 1:24:29I don't know. I feel like you're, you're,
- 1:24:32you're. I think you do feel bad about
- 1:24:33doing it, but I do think we've kind of done most of it justice.
- 1:24:36I do think I am OK. I think anything that we didn't.
- 1:24:40Cover would have been. Kind of smaller details.
