[upbeat rock music] Hey, welcome everybody.
• 0:19
This here is Full Spectrum Cycling. Currently doing show number 238 for you all. In the studio today, [laughs] couple of two, three coffee p- folks, for sure. [laughs] That, that was Mr. Andrew Zahn there.
• 0:35
[laughs] Hey, Andrew. Hello. Andrew's got the green hair today, sporting, uh... How long you had that green hair, Andrew? Well- Oh... it started out blue and then, you know- Oh, copy that... it fades. Yeah. Gotcha.
• 0:43
I still have that in there too. It's, it's more, uh, icy right now. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was just very softly lit- Seasonal... in here, so I didn't even... I thought it was just a reflection of the wall. Ah, now I get it.
• 0:52
Oh. We, we've got Mr. Tony Burger. Yeah, I'm right here. Uh, JK's back from Cabo. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Didn't know- I'm so relaxed. Wasn't, I wasn't sure if you were coming back. [laughs] I don't know.
• 1:04
I thought you might need an extra couple days down there to- Yeah... to recover from the travel. Definitely. Definitely. What, was the return trip better at least? Only one delay. Only one delay.
• 1:15
But, but that was right from the jump, and I didn't really care 'cause we already had like a four-hour layover built in anyways, so- Nice... that part was fine.
• 1:25
But now I know you c- they do have a direct flight from Minneapolis to Cabo, if I would ever go back there, but... Take the train up to Minneapolis and- Yeah. Would you go back? Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. Yeah.
• 1:36
I feel like you said something- I mean, I got a kind of... Th- this was kind of a recon-ish. I kinda got a feel of what not to do or what not w- you know, where to go. I did go in front of Cabo Wabo.
• 1:51
[laughs] [laughs] I was just gonna say- And go in... Oh- The, the question on everybody's mind is, did you meet Shaggy? No, no, no.
• 1:58
That was the funny part because, um, on Wednesday night we were hanging out with people from the area, and they own the catamaran that we were on, and da-da-da.
• 2:10
A- and, like, you know, so it's one of those adventure companies. Sure. Or they know how. They're like a, a aggregator to, like, you can find out what to do.
• 2:17
[coughs] And I don't know, one, like, and Kim just, "Burp," goes like, "Well, Mike wants to go to Cabo Wabo." And then it was just like, "Okay, we're..." No, I'm like, "No, I don't want to."
• 2:27
I'm just like invariably I'm gonna stop there or stop in front of it or whatever. And so it like, "Hey, where are you guys going?" And they'd run into friends [laughs] along the way as we're walking. Cabo Wabo, oh.
• 2:39
[laughs] You know? [laughs] It was like just this is a fla- I'm just like, "I just need a picture. All I need is a picture," and I do have- I-... the picture... full, full disclosure, I did go into Cabo, Cabo Wabo.
• 2:49
Oh, all right. Well, I feel like I have to step up now. I did not dance on a bar, but everyone else was, or on a table. [laughs] It looked like a, I don't know- It's a shoot show...
• 2:58
up, well, w- I mean, it, it looked- Disney for adults... it looked heavily fortified, you know, like val- you know, b- bodyguards and bouncers and- Yep, yep, there was definitely that. It was just very odd to me.
• 3:10
I'm just like, "This doesn't look comfortable- Yep... at all." It was Mexico for- Yeah. So we, we hit one of their, one of the dive bars they know about. Much more fun. [laughs] Oh, yeah. [laughs] Infinitely more fun.
• 3:23
Probably cheap, too. [sighs] No, not really. Non-American. Not really. I mean, it, it's all touristy. You know, it's like a tourist- Yeah, it is... inflated market, even with the peso. It, you know, but- See...
• 3:38
you know, it's like on vacation. But then you, you know... What, and that was hence- Multivania. I've, I, and I mean, I have such an appreciation of [gasps] potable water. [laughs] I mean, I lived on that. I mean, shit,
• 3:55
yeah, I jumped off the- No pun intended... I j- I jumped off the wagon- Shit... and I was just drinking dad beers.
• 3:59
Yeah, but it, it- I'm just like, like, it's a hell of a lot safer- Is that why you drink beers there, so you don't drink the water?... to- Right? I, that's, yeah, exactly.
• 4:04
I was like, "I have no problem," you know, [laughs] getting, make, like, drinking these beer. I mean, and it was a party, so then a shot of, or three of tequila came in and- Of course... whoa.
• 4:17
I'm like, "Yeah, I remember why I don't even like tequila." [laughs] [laughs] So it was a nice little eye-opener. Well, it's, it- What's the adage? Uh, one in Cabo?
• 4:25
[laughs] I gue- yeah, yeah, they, yeah, they kinda like- You, you-... compile like the Las Vegas and the- You really-... Reno shit... couldn't have picked a better week to be out of- No, dude... Milwaukee. Yeah.
• 4:35
Holy cow, was it brutal. I was frantic.
• 4:37
I was frantic mentally and, like, th- you know, all over the place, you know, water insecurity and just, like, thinking about, like, "What the hell is the conversion f- I don't get, I don't understand. What? 2,000 pesos?
• 4:49
What the fuck am I buying?" You know, and [laughs] like, I'm not buying the borough, you know? And I'm not traveling this way. But [laughs]- Right on... but all the same, oh, shit. Yeah, I'm getting all worked up again.
• 5:04
[laughs] Well, let's, let's- But it was a vacation in a nice climate... let's take a, let's take a call while you calm down. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line?
• 5:15
Good evening, guys. It's Ulroy from Ontario, Canada calling. Yes. Ulroy. Ulroy.
• 5:21
We have a, y- [laughs] So Ulroy t- uh, text, what, he texted or emailed me or something about trying to call in the last few weeks, and I, I don't think we'd updated him on the day we do [laughs] the show yet. Oh, no.
• 5:32
Or the time or something. You know what it is? It's that I do keep up on the, the past shows. I do listen to them, and I either missed it or, but I'm also very bad with technology. So when I, when I send a, I like...
• 5:45
So I looked up the, the bike shop, and then I sent one through the customer request or something.
• 5:51
Like, that's how I [laughs] I'm so bad with technology, that's how I get ahold of people is I send it over, like, a, a customer inquiry or something like this, and that's where I got ahold of Sven and- [laughs]...
• 6:00
and, uh, yeah, it, it was, uh, it was, I thank you for the response and, uh, uh, the update on the time and, and place and, uh, yeah. How's Canada? Um, you know what? It's... So December was a complete write-off.
• 6:14
It was, there was, it was wet. It's been a very, it's been very damp up here. Um, the fat biking season is about, has been about a week long so far. Mm.
• 6:22
There hasn't been really enough of a base layer and, and nothing to... Even tonight, it's actually raining. It's, it's... And I imagine you're, you guys probably have almost identical weather. Yep, it's raining.
• 6:34
It's been, it's been damp and crummy. Yeah, we had a, we had a cold snap there for about a week. Yeah. And now it's in the- Yep... you know, high- It was-... high 30s again, so yeah... it was freaking cold.
• 6:44
Blizzard, then a freeze. It was significant cold. Yeah. Oh, it was here, too. Yeah. Yeah, there was a real deep... And that's, it's hard to get used to that. It's not bad if you've had a month of it.
• 6:55
You can kinda- Right. Right... 'cause...
• 6:57
So when I get ready to leave in the morning to commute to work, I have to have about three different changes of clothes laying on the floor, and then I have to basically pick and choose depending on how, how bad is it.
• 7:08
You don't wanna be t- you don't wanna sweat on the way in, and you also don't wanna be too cold. Right. So you gotta be, you gotta...
• 7:13
It's a, it's a real fine balancing act, 'cause you could go in the morning w- you know, two layers, uh, and by the time you come home in the evening, you're carrying most of it in the bag on your back, so. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
• 7:23
Yep. Yeah, right on. So, uh, uh, do you get lake-effect snow there normally, or are you not in a spot that's affected by that, uh, kind of meteorological phenomenon? Uh, not, not terribly.
• 7:37
Like, Lake Ontario, there is a little bit of that sometimes depending on how, which way the wind's blowing. And, and if Buffalo has something coming that way, we can sometimes get that.
• 7:45
But where we are here, it's kinda weird. We're in... I don't know if we're in a dip or we're high. I don't know which, but we... It seems to go all the way around the city that I'm in here.
• 7:53
It, it doesn't seem to really affect us quite as badly. If you go north or south, they get it quite a bit- Hmm... quite a bit more. And so here, it's, we're, it's, you know, it's pretty easy. It's not, there's not a...
• 8:02
There's a lot of complaining going on, because I think people are, um, used to having bare roads to drive on and, and clear sidewalks to walk on.
• 8:08
But, um, I mean, when we hear that Buffalo gets five feet and they're having a, you know, they're going down to the stadium- [laughs]... they're, everybody's having a good...
• 8:15
Seems like they're having a great time in it, and up here it's [laughs] seems to be people get upset with a little tiny bit of skiff of snow even though they, we live in Canada- Yeah... and supposedly it's- Yeah...
• 8:23
you know, people are thinking that it's, it's the Great White North- [laughs]... like we, we get a lot more snow than we actually do. [singing] We're here in, where I am, here. Very cool. Yeah. [laughs] That's right.
• 8:31
[laughs] Hey, uh, Ulroy, do you have a little bit to, uh, just hang out for a minute and, uh, listen while we take a quick snow report from Seely Dave? Then we can, uh- Sure. I didn't mean to...
• 8:42
I don't wanna interrupt, guys. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. We'll get him back. I'll get off the phone and quick catch up with you guys. Yeah. Yeah, I can sit tight here, no problem. Yeah.
• 8:48
Uh, we'll, we'll get back with you in just a sec. He's just gonna do a report- Yep... from up, uh, Seely way. Halfway between him and us. Sounds good. Yeah, pretty much. Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller.
• 8:58
Wait, we know it's Seely Dave already, so [laughs]... Yeah. You gotta let that cat out of the bag. Yeah. [laughs] How's it going, Dave? Who, who am I bumping? Who, who is that from Canada- Oh, you-... that I'm bumping?
• 9:07
That's Ulroy. He- Ulroy. Yeah. He's, he's been a- Oh... a semi-regular caller. He- Mm-hmm... uh, and he's, he's not... He's sitting there. He's listening. Hey, Ulroy. Say hey to Dave. Hey, uh, Dave. How's it going? Good.
• 9:20
I listen when Dave's on, too. I, I don't miss a show when Dave's on, either, so it's good. [laughs] Nice. What's the snow report, Dave? Uh, yeah.
• 9:27
So I, so, uh, so I tried today after our cold snap to do my final, like I... Tom Schuler and I went over to, uh, Lake Owen to try to circumnavigate the lake, and I sunk in up to my, my axles in slush. Ooh. Hmm.
• 9:45
  So it's, um...
• 9:47
Even with that cold weather, I don't know, there's some weird overflow thing with the lakes and stuff, so if you're coming up here to ride lakes, be careful 'cause you don't know what's under that snow anymore.
• 9:58
Um, and even though we had some very cold temps, the lakes are not safe. So, um, so I wanted to give that report, 'cause I know I've been talking a, a lot about lake riding.
• 10:08
I didn't want anybody to, "Yeah, I, I'm gonna go do what Dave did," and I don't want anybody falling through. [laughs] Good call.
• 10:15
Um, otherwise though, um, we essentially have, um, we essentially have 130 miles of, of fat bike trails, because you can basically ride anywhere.
• 10:29
Um, nobody's been grooming anymore since, uh, we haven't been getting more snow.
• 10:34
Everything's ridden in really well, so all the regular summer mountain bike trails are open, and the winter mountain bike trails are also, the winter fat bike trails, some of them like the ones in Seely, are only open in the winter.
• 10:47
And that, they just had the Seely Big Fat race last weekend, and they groomed them in prep for that. So those...
• 10:54
I just rode those trails today after I got sort of, like, my hopes and dreams of, of riding around Lake Owen were dashed.
• 11:00
[laughs] I was already arrived, so I came home and just rode, rode my neighborhood trails, and those are, are in great condition. Um, they're actually...
• 11:09
Uh, it's a little grassy, um, from all the bike racers on, on very thin snow, but, um, perfectly rideable, lots of fun. The forest is still a winter wonderland, so it looks pretty. And, uh, don't, uh... Anybody that...
• 11:24
I know you guys [laughs] probably have more snow than we do, though. [laughs] Wow. Yeah, we got about 14 inches or so total- Total... over the last- Yeah... kind of week or whatever. It'll be down to three tomorrow.
• 11:33
Yeah, but it's at, now it's in the high 30s, so it's going away real fast. Ah. Well, it's gonna... It's warming up up here. Um, we had a cold snap. It's warming up. Um, it was 28 degrees today.
• 11:46
It's gonna get into the 30s. I, it looked, uh, like our weather's kinda mirroring yours temperature-wise. So our snow probably won't last real long either, but, um, it's pretty right now.
• 11:57
And, uh, anyway, so if you feel like coming up, don't let the warm temps stop you, but be careful on the lakes. Right on. Gotcha. Very cool, Dave. Uh, any- Uh-... anything else going on besides that?
• 12:09
Oh, and just one other thing I wanted to say.
• 12:11
The, the one other thing I wanted to say, um, related to something, uh, you guys mentioned a while back, somebody said nobody's making carbon fat bikes anymore, and I think Trek still has their Farley 9.6 carbon on their website.
• 12:25
Hmm. Yeah, that was one of my th- one of my theories about the WTB-...
• 12:29
uh, tire that's coming out in 27.5, and, uh, w- uh, the original report was that that was the tire size, and then I think Gomez got a s- a set at fatbike.com and they, they have a 26 check mark box on the sleeve, but I haven't heard of a 26-inch version being available anywhere.
• 12:49
So, uh, I, I'm- Uh... I'm thinking they're doing an OE for Trek probably, but who knows? Right. Yeah, I don't know who's gonna buy those tires when you can buy Dillinger's for 75 bucks.
• 12:59
Yeah, they're running- If you can find them... they're out, they're out of stock at, at the distributor. So if you want that deal, you gotta get them through, uh, whatever, uh, online retailer you can find.
• 13:08
I think Andrew was looking for some. Did you- Yeah... did you end up finding any, Andrew? Uh, Aventon or whatever. Uh, Aventron or whatever. Oh, yeah, like those- They've been...
• 13:19
I've been emailing them, uh- It's been back ordered... and well, they haven't said it. All right. But they said- Yeah... "Oh, we're, we're gonna get them out sometime next week." Yeah.
• 13:27
And so I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I emailed them today. No, those guys are, those guys are in, like, Sheboygan, right?
• 13:32
They're not very far away from here, and they're, they're very traditionally a order it when they're, um, sold kind of a place, so. No. Yeah. Well, um- Bummer... I mean, we've got them up.
• 13:43
Uh, they're in stock at bike shops up here. Everybody... You know, they... I think Q, like, sort of forces bike shops to buy a certain amount of stuff.
• 13:50
You know, you have to buy 10 of something or other, so they're all on sale up here too, so. Oh, okay. So- You can find them at shops... so Mike's got them- Yeah... and, uh, Blue Moon's got them.
• 14:00
Uh, it's New Moon and, uh- Or New Moon. Yeah, but Start Line- Yeah, Blue Moon's the beer. [laughs] No, Start Line. Start Line. Yeah, Mike- Yep... Mike at Start Line- Yep... he's, he's... I know he's got them.
• 14:08
Well, Andrew may want a, a, a- Yeah... a pair of them, so if you can, uh, wrangle them, he'd probably- Well, if, if-... figure that out...
• 14:13
yeah, if, if somebody, if anybody wants, uh, they can reach out to me directly, and, uh, you can put my email in the show notes if you want, uh, Greg- Mm-hmm...
• 14:22
or my, my, um, cell and, um, people can ping me, and I can, um, find out what the prices are and get them shipped if they want, okay? Dig. All right, Dave. Yeah. Thanks for the report. All right. You bet.
• 14:33
Talk, talk to you soon. Okay, guys. Bye. Okay. Peace. Bye. Bye. Silly Dave, everybody. Uh, sounds like it's mirroring the conditions down here a little bit. A little bit. I...
• 14:41
D- the lake stuff is really fun when the conditions are right. And terrible when they're not.
• 14:45
[laughs] Yeah, because, you know, if it gets too much snow on there, nobody goes out there unless you maybe go to Winnebago or something, then there's a, a road across the lake or something. But, uh,
• 14:54
good stuff when it's right. It's actually coming up in February ridiculously early. Oh, the ride across, uh- Yeah... Winnebago? Bike, Bike Across Bago. Yeah. [laughs] All right, Al Roy- Got water wings...
• 15:05
we're, we're back. How's it going with you again? [laughs] It's good. No, I, I noticed Silly Dave was... He... Was that conversation that he was having about the, the lack of, uh,
• 15:16
making of the carbon fat bikes, and I did... Now, I did listen to Chewy's Salon Chair, and that was a couple weeks back, and, uh, there was a few nuggets of- [laughs] What?...
• 15:25
of, of information there that if you ha- It was a great show, by the way. Was that the shit show version? Wait, was that the drunk show? That would- Yes. Oh. [laughs] So I started listening- You would have very-...
• 15:34
to it thinking, "Okay, it, it was a bit chaotic at the beginning. There seemed like there was about 15 people sitting in one salon chair," but it [laughs] but if...
• 15:42
I just, I stuck with it, and it was, uh, it was a good... It was definitely a good show, and that one thing that came out with the, the...
• 15:49
I think there is other place, like, other manufacturers are making carbon fat bikes. I think Salsa still makes their Barry. Yeah, I'm sure. Um- So does Bariallas, I believe. [coughs] But, uh- Yeah...
• 15:58
I think, I think I had just seen like that week, like three or four, uh, manufacturers that are doing titanium. I'm like, "What? Is titanium the new carbon kind of thing?" But, uh, you know, I, I d- I think- Oh, yeah...
• 16:08
personally, unless you're racing, I don't see a carbon fat bike as being a thing anybody should have. Titanium's- No... much better material. Yeah. Can, can I digress for a second?
• 16:17
Well, yeah, I think, I think definitely the steel or titanium would, would make more sense just because the conditions, you know- Ab- absolutely... with...
• 16:23
Like, I know that mine's an aluminum bike, and it's, it suffers greatly in the winter with the... if you're commuting in the salt. It, it doesn't take long for it to start to show a lot of wear and a lot of spots.
• 16:32
And so the aluminum's very lightweight, and it doesn't, doesn't do well in, in certain conditions. So it's, you know, maybe the steel would be a, a tad more, um, you know, durable. Yeah.
• 16:43
What is your- But- What is your current aluminum, uh, fat bike? He's got that- It's just the... It's a, it's an old, it's an old bike now. It's a 2019 frame of Bigfoot frame, the Norco Bigfoot frame.
• 16:54
So it's- Norco, very nice... and everything else on it is just basically... Yeah, so I mean, it's done well. It's done... It's definitely outlived the first version, the 2015 that I had. It's definitely outlived that.
• 17:02
But, um, I'm always kind of hesitant because of what happened to the... The first frame, uh, fractured just at the, at the chainstay and right at the weld.
• 17:11
And so I'm, I was always k- I, I was always kind of a little bit nervous after that, that the bikes would start... like, something would fail. 'Cause I've never had a bike fail before. I never had a frame fail before.
• 17:20
But Norco was very good about, um, replacing the frame, so I, I, I gotta give them credit for that. They were pretty quick on the ball with that. And so I- Nice... you know, I was very happy with the replacement.
• 17:28
But, um, yeah, a little nervous that it may happen again just because it's their mass produced kind of thing, so, um- Yeah. Well, look-... but I have been looking at...
• 17:36
I've been kind of looking around and maybe f- in, you know, a couple years when this one finally dies, that, you know, something a little more modern. I mean, the thing's changed quite a bit from 2019 even to now, so.
• 17:45
Oh, yeah. Yeah, it looks like they're still making the Bigfoot, or at least it's still on their website, so that's, uh, good news. They... Yeah, they are. They, they got rid of the Sasquatches.
• 17:54
I thought it could've been really cool because the Sasquatch was always the one that they put the suspension fork on and stuff, but they started to steepen the head tube again.
• 18:01
And I'm, you know, as, as we're talking about the weather, the weather being more warm than it is cold, like, and we're getting shorter and shorter winters, um, I r- I really do think that the fat bikes...
• 18:12
I ride mine all year round, and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I know a lot of people stick them away, and they, they bring them out exclusively for what they call whatever they determine is winter- Mm-hmm...
• 18:20
is at this point. But, um, you know, if they start to slacken the head tube... But Rocky Mountain's done a fantastic job. Their bike looks amazing. We...
• 18:25
Actually, one of the guys I ride with just got one, and it looks... It's nice and slack, and it's- You know, all, all modern.
• 18:30
It's got the tall speed rear end and, you know, it, it looks really cool and I think you could use that for just about everything almost, so. Yeah, it looks like, uh, s- I know Norco did start to steepen them up again.
• 18:41
They started slackening out with the 2019 was somewhat slacker. Uh-huh. And now they've done, gone back to the 69 degree head tube again, so. Yeah.
• 18:48
That's an interesting thing because as, as conditions get softer, if that's what people are using, a steeper head tube actually works better.
• 18:56
Um, especially when you're running really low tire pressure because it change- Mm...
• 19:00
it changes the trail of the fork so much when you get that really low tire pressure that you really kinda need it because it kinda slacks it out- Yep... as you are dropping your pressure down- Mm-hmm...
• 19:10
to three or four pounds. Um, so, you know, if you're, if it's, if it's purely for, you know, soft conditions, then the steeper thing is a good thing. But I agree with you.
• 19:20
And all around, when you don't sacrifice that much, and it certainly makes it more of a four-season bike. Right. Totally worth it.
• 19:27
Uh, just noticed also- Yeah, I mean, I've taken mine on flight, I've taken mine on bike packing expeditions with the guys that I ride with. They've rode various different bikes.
• 19:34
They've gone from, um, drop bar gravel bikes, and there was, uh, one, uh, one guy rode a Surly mountain bike and, and it, it doesn't, doesn't seem to be any less. You know what I mean?
• 19:46
They all seem to perform equally good, just different. You know what I mean? Sure. So there's no, there's no one bike that's better than the others for that and particular applications, so. Yeah. Yeah.
• 19:54
It, and, and I just noticed we were talking about 27.5 tires from WTB. All of, uh, Norco's bikes are also 27.5 right now, but they're using Vee tires- Mm-hmm... on the current batch.
• 20:05
I don't know what they had on yours, but I'll tell you what. You wanna make a bike better, get rid of Vee tires- Yeah, immediately remove-... and put on those WTB's, I'm sure [laughs]... Vee tires.
• 20:12
Any, any, any 27.5, any, any brand is probably better than Vee tires. I just, I hate them. I hate to bash them, but boy. What's your, what's a, what's a criticism... I know the Vee tires.
• 20:21
I have had them and I've, I haven't r- you know, I do, I have bought 45Nrth tires as well just to, to make it a little bit better, a little bit lighter and nicer tire.
• 20:29
But they, um, I mean, the Vee rubber themselves, is, is the criticism, what's your criticism of the Vee rubber itself? I'm not saying it's a bad or a good tire.
• 20:36
I- I just, at the speed that I'm riding in the w- in the winter, I don't notice it much of a, you know, at advantage to either of the tires when the pressure- Oh... is low.
• 20:44
But what, what do you see as the negative on those tires? As, as someone who's an absolute lightweight rider and really just basically what we would call a Nancy around here, I can barely power Vee ru- [laughs]...
• 20:55
Vee dub tires. Yeah. And I bought a pair of the Toboggans, the CTS Toboggans, and it was- CST? CST, thank you Yep. And it was literally from the first, like, mile was a night and day better tire.
• 21:10
I mean, it was, it was astrono- I can, I don't know what it is. My buddy Sam yelled at me saying I'm just not strong enough, which is probably true. Um, but they just, they, the,
• 21:22
the Toboggans rolled so much better that I never looked back. Yeah, I, I noticed it.
• 21:28
We, uh, got a bunch of tires at, to fatbike.com in the old days to test and I'd been riding 45Nrth, and I put on some Vee tires and rode with the normal group of guys that I always ride with, and I was very much struggling to keep up, just around town doing some- Exactly...
• 21:42
you know, urban bashing. And, uh, I was two gears, uh, lower than I normally would be just to make the bike go. So they, at least for me, they didn't roll well.
• 21:52
One thing I will give them, though, is if you happen to have an e-bike, they're very durable. Um, it's a, it's a different compound- Yeah... that, that lasts a long time. They're a little heavier.
• 22:00
And if you're flat prone, then they're much more durable than any, you know, lightweight 45Nrth or anything like that. But, uh, yeah, I guess we ride what we can ride and, uh, what we can get too right now.
• 22:12
It's not like there's a ton of choices out there, but thank goodness there's still fat bike tires to be had. Well, it's good that- Yeah, I'm getting low... WTB's making, making a, a, a 27.5 tire.
• 22:22
I know there's a lot of fat bike companies are going to 20.
• 22:23
I'm not convinced that 27.5 re- is necess- really that, all that necessary, but I mean, it's nice that there, now there's a bit of a variety of tires, that people are starting to make different, you know, we got more choices in that, in that way for sure.
• 22:37
Yeah, right on. Cool. Uh, anything else you wanna leave us with today before we... We're gonna get into our little, uh, Shiver West 24 update here and, uh- Which you're welcome to come to. [laughs] Come on down.
• 22:48
If you got nothing going on February 4th. You know what? It's, it's... Well, I've been talking with my family about it and we are [laughs] I d- definitely do wanna come down and visit you guys.
• 22:58
There's no doubt about it, it's just the timing thing.
• 23:00
It will happen at some point, and I'll let you know ahead of time [laughs] when that happens so that you can, you know, we can, uh, you know, I can see the sights down there 'cause it sounds like there's lots of them, so.
• 23:09
Yeah. Um, yeah, would definitely look forward to that for sure. It, last weekend in July is a really good one. If you're serious, yeah, if you're seriously looking at that the last weekend in July.
• 23:16
It's a good weekend to be in Milwaukee. Yeah. Yeah. And it's definitely, um, a very rideable on the beach now too, so you wouldn't have to leave your fat bike.
• 23:25
Or y- obviously you have fat bikes around here can buy, plus- Oh, yeah... the, the Riverwest 24 weekend also has the big Harley meetup. Right. It's got the air show. And the air show. It's got German Fest.
• 23:35
The Germans are coming. German Fest. Uh, that's like, it's just a ridiculous weekend. How, how tall are you? How, how tall are you? How tall are you? Oh, I actually, I'm six foot five. Holy shit. That's how, yeah.
• 23:44
I, uh- Okay, I don't have a bike for you. Yeah. [laughs] We'll, we can find one. No, I, I have to bring my... You know what? I, it's like everything.
• 23:50
When you're, when you're this tall, um, you basically just look, whatever frame says extra large, it, you don't do any measurement. You just, you get it home and, and adjust it as necessary. [laughs] That's why.
• 24:00
You have to, you know, you have to either lengthen the stem or s- put the seat back a little bit. But you know what? You just get used to whatever. It's like having golf clubs.
• 24:06
I never had a custom set of golf clubs and I just played around with these, uh, regular ones and you know what? You make do.
• 24:12
Maybe I would've been slightly better if I would've had a, a proper set made, but you know what?
• 24:16
You don't know, what you don't know, you don't know, and so that's [laughs] Well, make- Whatever works at the time and it works...
• 24:21
make sure, make sure you give us enough time so we can find a good punk show in town that day too. That'd be cool. Yeah, no, actually one last thing, just as you remind me there is I don't, I don't think I talked to you.
• 24:32
The last time I went to see Descendents- Um, Adolescence and Circle Jerks play in Toronto. Ah. That was a fantastic show. They, they did that show- I don't think I, I don't think I called in... in Milwaukee, too.
• 24:43
Yeah, we got Bad Religion. Yeah, they did that, they did that at The Rave. They did an exact same set. We got Bad Religion and is it Social D and Bad Religion? Yep. Yeah. They play a lot around here. They're coming.
• 24:50
Yeah, so there's stuff coming. Yeah. Uh- It's, it's... it was a gr- it was probably one of the,
• 24:57
one of the best shows that Descendents, that I've seen anyways, in all the times that I've seen them, that they did, and- Nice... and, uh, yeah, it was, it was, it was r- it was pretty cool.
• 25:04
And that was right before Milo, the lead singer, had a bit of a, uh, a heart problem there- Mm-hmm... a bit of a mild heart attack, I guess it was.
• 25:10
So it was kinda cool that that didn't happen before that show and that, that, um, I guess everything turned out okay in that regard, so yeah. Cool. Yeah. They'll be back in maybe... Yeah. Yeah. You, you keep- Cool...
• 25:19
us posted, 'cause for sure we'll set you up. It would be great. I would... Yeah, yeah. No, you... Yeah, for sure. I would, I will bring my bike for sure. If I'm heading down that way, I'll, I'll, I'll throw- Cool...
• 25:28
it on the back of the rack and... Yep. Cool. Right on, man. Cool. Well, it's good to hear from you. Don't be such a stranger. [laughs] No, I won't. I'll m- I'll make sure. I know it's been a long time.
• 25:37
Things got incredibly... I don't know what happened, but life just got all of a sudden- It happens...
• 25:41
you know, kicked into high gear and, uh, I just, uh, a lot of stuff's got put to the side and [laughs] so, yeah, no, I wanted to catch up with you guys, and, uh, and thanks for, uh, taking my call. Right on, man.
• 25:50
Talk to you soon. Great hearing from you. Yep. All right. Thanks. Peace. Thanks, guys. Yep. Have a good night. Bye. Very good. All right. Sealy Dave first. Alroy, then Alroy first, then Sealy Dave, then Alroy.
• 26:02
[coughs] Long time listener. Uh, we got... We, we, we alluded to this before, Andrew's in the room. Yeah. [laughs] Let's get into it. Uh, is your official title King of Shiver West '24 or- Oh, there is no king.
• 26:12
[laughs] No, no gods, no masters. No? Okay. Well, let's, uh, let's do a little Shiver West '24 update. We did do, uh, last, in the coldest of cold days that we had, it was, uh- We talked- Did a nice-...
• 26:24
about it, and we formed a... And then we had a meeting the day after- Nice-... so we had done-... a nice ride that day- Yeah... where we, where we did a little lap and, and did some, some checking out.
• 26:31
Oh, that was Saturday. That was- Saturday. You know- Saturday was good... here's the funny part about Saturday. And- Saturday was 10 degrees when we started riding.
• 26:39
It was a little chilly to start, but I was comfortable by the time we hit the Reservoir Park. Yep.
• 26:46
That's a full 20 degrees colder than when we went down to that stupid watching people jump in the lake, which we froze- [laughs]... our nads off. What is going on with that?
• 26:55
It's very, very- Being prepared, I- Very curious. Yeah. I mean- Maybe it's something to do with the humidity... I don't know. We literally, I, like, I was incredibly comfortable on that ride at 10 degrees. Yeah.
• 27:05
Uh, and, uh, Jayzuz was asked. Jayzuz, yep, yep. Jayzuz was, uh, was comfortable- He did really well... on a, on a- On a Schwinn-... Schwinn steel frame. I don't know what that was... it's '70s or '80s... five speed.
• 27:15
Yeah. Yeah. Some, some old city looking Schwinn from the '70s, I would imagine. Could've been a Suburban. Yeah. No, and, uh, he, he had a great time. Killed it. He posted on Facebook. Uh, you know, I, I...
• 27:26
It gave us a lot of confidence that, you know, riders with any bike and any skill set are gonna have a good time- He didn't fall once... coming out. No, no. Well, it- No snow angels that, uh, that day...
• 27:36
no snow angels that day And it was a, it was a, it was a day where, you know, uh, it was, uh... I wouldn't say it was challenging, but you had to kinda keep your eye out. There was ice- Mm-hmm...
• 27:45
and there was slush and mush. Uh, but it, you know, we did talk about this is not a fat bike event. You don't have to- No... by any means have a fat Mike. No. Mike? A fat Mike? What are you doing, fat Mike?
• 27:55
[laughs] He's not that fat. You don't have to have a fat bike- I shouldn't. That's why I don't drink that much. And, and- It's not good for the baby...
• 28:01
[laughs] I would argue that in the city you're just as, as well off on a, a 32C- Well-... tire on a, on a road bike... we even talked about if it's slushy- Yeah... you want a road bike. Yeah. For sure.
• 28:12
I mean, and the week before that, the first of the practice laps was right after the blizzard, and it was a different kinda riding than I've done before, but it w- it was, uh, you know, DPW, I can't say enough good things about, uh, what Milwaukee's DPW has done to- Fully agree...
• 28:27
uh, keep the, the roads as clear as they can. Um, uh, it was, it was a, a wild time. Uh, I, I left two snow angels, but that was doing the switchback from, uh, lakefront up. Sw- switchback is guaranteed snow angel. Yeah.
• 28:42
I gotta f- I, I fucking hate the switchback-... I gotta find my donut tires from the switchback... in the best, uh- 'Cause I was riding the bike that he has, testing it out, and doing donuts at the switchback. Oh, nice.
• 28:50
[laughs] Yeah. Yeah. With electric power. Of course. So what did we, what did we learn, or what did we, uh, kind of solidify since that last practice lap?
• 29:00
And by the way, there's another practice lap tomorrow and a f- and a final one the day before the event, right? Tomorrow being Saturday. Oh, yeah, yeah. 8:00 AM that time. Yes.
• 29:07
Uh- That's why he's not clued into the internet- Right... thing. It, this is- I'm, I'm bad with days anyways... it's Friday already. Geez, K- it's time- Yeah, it's-... to go home tomorrow.
• 29:15
Fuck it, I won't show up to work. That's fine. Yeah. [laughs] I'll just be riding. Um, yeah, so we did a little...
• 29:22
This last one was really good at pacing, trying to figure out if, you know, if we packed too much stuff into the event, uh, which I don't think that we did. I think that we've got- I think it's good...
• 29:31
just the right amount. We've got four warming stations, uh, you know, bunch of bonus checkpoints. We're s- solidifying that, but, uh, you can definitely expect to see something at People's Ice Rink.
• 29:43
Uh, that's gonna be a really, uh, fun one- Yep... as a bonus checkpoint. Which by the way, I did stop by after our practice lap and after Tony and I went to Company and had a bloody Mary and a beer. It's very good.
• 29:53
Uh, I did stop by at the People's Ice Rink, and s- and Simon and some of the boys were playing there, and there were two girls out, and they were cooking out, and it was- Mm-hmm...
• 30:01
you know, a, a typical, uh, People's Ice Rink. Right, I... That would be, uh, Fratney and what's the other cross street? Well, it's middle of Fratney and- It's right on the corner almost...
• 30:13
and, yeah, you, you take the, the Beer Line Trail, you kinda can't miss it. Yeah. Yeah. Were they doing, uh- The People's Ice Rink... broomball or actual skating?
• 30:20
No, they were doing some kind of three-person thing with the puck and a ball, and you have to hit the ball with the puck or something. And it, it was a hockey thing- Oh... on, on, on ice skates.
• 30:29
And the, the ice conditions were amazingly good. Oh, yeah. Yeah. We had good weather- Yeah... for that thing to freeze nicely. Yeah, but it could've s- it could've slushed up, and with all the snow we got, that it was...
• 30:38
There was some- Today it might need-... there was some problems... a little cleaning. Yeah. Yeah. But, uh, it was great last week anyway.
• 30:42
They're pretty good at closing off and an- announcing, you know, don't get on the ice, and, you know, go to the- Let it do its thing It's a good thing. So, uh, People's Ice Rink will be on it. What else have we got?
• 30:52
Uh, after party at House of Rad. That's gonna be, uh, pretty good. So starting around 4:00. So, you know, for anyone that's, uh, not heard before, we're starting leaving Wu Tang Park at Shar- at 10 sharp.
• 31:06
Uh, well, River West Sharp. It's Garden Park, technically. Wu Tang Park. We all know what it is, but they may not. Yeah. You know, Gard- And is, is 10 sharp-...
• 31:12
Garden Park, but, you know, uh- I may be still on my Mexican minutes. So [laughs] - 10 sharp... 10 sharp, sharp, or is it Mexican time?
• 31:20
[laughs] It's a no drop group ride, so it'd be really beneficial if you showed up around the time you leave. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, am I already getting scolded for being late? Yes, you are.
• 31:28
[laughs] We're, we're, uh, you know, hopefully you can get there a little bit early. [laughs] Around, like, 9:30-ish. Uh, you know, I'll probably be there around 9:00.
• 31:35
[laughs] We're gonna be doing a, uh, food drive for Sauce, uh, MKE. Uh, we're working out the details with that, but, uh, you know, y- we'll post everything that they're looking for.
• 31:46
Uh, if you're unfamiliar with, uh, Sauce MKE, they are a free, uh, plant-based, uh, delivery, a food delivery service. Uh, um, really cool, uh, group of people. Uh- Try- trying to get people to eat healthy. Yeah.
• 32:01
Um- That, that generally may not be able to afford to eat healthy- Mm-hmm...
• 32:05
which is why when you're not able to eat healthy, all the other things come into it, like obesity and, and high blood sugar, and things like that. Yeah. And, and- Sorry... it's all bike delivered.
• 32:16
Uh- Yeah, it's a cool, it's a cool situation. We're, we're really lucky to have them. Um- Tony stepped on a duck. [laughs] So just a little semantics thing here.
• 32:26
Is it Shiverwest24 all one thing or is there a space between Shiverwest and 24? I don't like using space bars. I don't either. Yeah. That's why I don't, but I'm just- It all flows... I'm just making sure.
• 32:36
It all flows together. Um, but you can find us on the- I'm just, I'm just calling it SW24. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Uh- It's weird... um,
• 32:43
you can fi- you can find the updated information, uh, on the Riverwest 24 Facebook page. We've got an event going. Uh, you know, uh- How many do you have confirmed so far?
• 32:55
I mean, going, which is- Last time I checked it was around fif- 50. 50, that's what I thought. I saw two. Um, but, you know, what we fully expect is if it's, if it's real nice, we could get a couple hundred, right?
• 33:05
Right. You know, it, it, it- If it's shitty, we could get 10. Yeah. Uh- Us. Yeah, us. [laughs] Right, right.
• 33:09
All, all the people that have been meeting and, and, and, and having, uh, and, and volunteering to organize this, you know, I, I can't say enough great thing- Welcome... about the, this, uh, this group of organizers.
• 33:19
Uh, best looking group I've ever, uh, worked with. Uh, and, uh, yeah, they're, uh, they'll be there. Right on. Uh- Now, there is a warming station at, uh, the Uptowner. Up- yep, Uptowner.
• 33:34
They said they're gonna be smoking meats. There's fire pits outside of- [laughs] Uh, on 600 block of Bremen. Bremen.
• 33:41
And then, uh, if you're familiar with Riverwest 24, just around the corner from where checkpoint two would be, uh, is gonna be an- a- another block party and- Family oriented block party... yeah, family oriented.
• 33:55
Should be fun. Very good. I would just say just get on it. It's not gonna be- Just come have fun. Yeah. It's not gonna be hard to follow the group if there's a bunch of people riding their bikes. Nope.
• 34:01
There's no cost other than- Yeah... other than stopping at places and having a beverage or something. It's, it's- Mm-hmm... free and open to have fun, and
• 34:08
yeah, bringing bike awareness to people that don't realize that people actually ride bikes in the winter. Kinda like what, uh, the Santa Rampage used to do. Kinda like that. Yeah. Yeah. All right, cool.
• 34:19
We're just in this neighborhood. Well, we're, we're gonna- [laughs] Well- 54 going, 277 interested Well, nice. Yeah. Get those interested people off the pot and get on the bike. Right. Yeah.
• 34:27
They- they're gonna, they're gonna- Well, that gets-... they're gonna wake up and say, "Hey, Google, what's the weather today?" Yeah. Mm-hmm. Whoo. Oh, and then I roll over or I get on my bike. Oh. All right, everybody.
• 34:35
Maybe I can, maybe I can take my bike over to the bike shop right now to just have it checked out. [laughs] I'm... [laughs] That was an action-packed show today. Thank you very much, Andrew, for coming in.
• 34:44
Uh- Always a pleasure... Tony and JK, Alroy, and, uh, Dave Schlabowski. And it costs a thousand. Or Sleazy Dave. We'll be at you next week. Same bat time, same, uh, bat channel. Yeah.
• 34:58
  [rock music]
