- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Wit and today we have very
- 0:06Speaker 1: special guests, recording artists actor Shays's up in this building?
- 0:10Speaker 2: What's up? Are you good?
- 0:13Speaker 1: How are you?
- 0:14Speaker 2: I'm fantastic. Thank you for having me. I love this concept.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and I love that I'm going to be
- 0:19Speaker 1: eating lunch with you.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I have breakfast and now I'm gonna have lunch. Fortunately
- 0:24Speaker 1: it's a broke dish, but broke dishes on this show
- 0:28Speaker 1: taste great. And I always have a saying, the broken
- 0:32Speaker 1: the dish, the sweeter the story.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Wow.
- 0:35Speaker 1: This entire day of filming, all the dishes combined came
- 0:40Speaker 1: to less than twenty dollars. So today's going to be
- 0:43Speaker 1: a great day for me and you are the highlight
- 0:46Speaker 1: of my day. So what are you gonna be cooking
- 0:49Speaker 1: for me?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to cook my favorite broke dish.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It's just it's just spaghetti and pasta, but I spice
- 0:57Speaker 3: up a little ground beef on top of it.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, here we go, here we go.
- 1:22Speaker 3: So you know, you can just do the regular old
- 1:25Speaker 3: pasta in the water and the sauce, but.
- 1:30Speaker 2: You know, what I'm saying, like cut an onion.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I like how you were specific about the purple onion.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So he has just so you guys know, Marinara sauce.
- 1:38Speaker 1: He has the beef, the garlic. He specifically asked for
- 1:42Speaker 1: a purple onion. I actually don't know the difference between onions.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I know one is sweet, and I don't know what
- 1:47Speaker 1: the purple onion is.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm not going to hold you like I don't know
- 1:49Speaker 3: all the benefits. But I just grew up knowing that
- 1:51Speaker 3: this was supposed to be a little better than the
- 1:52Speaker 3: white onion.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Oh so you were like a little racist.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So I just kind of like, you know right there,
- 1:58Speaker 2: Oh your.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I believe you. I actually believe that about you. He
- 2:04Speaker 1: even brought his own water. Guys, you know what I'm saying.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Look, we live in a time where we have a
- 2:08Speaker 3: lot of information, so I like to, you know, do
- 2:10Speaker 3: what I can.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'm not perfect.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I perfect, no, you know, but where I can be
- 2:15Speaker 3: on point, I try. So what I'm doing is very easy.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I'm spicing up my sauce a little bit, and I'm
- 2:21Speaker 3: putting a little bit of onions in the sauce.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Right now, are.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You gonna find like chop them. Are you gonna be
- 2:26Speaker 1: like chunks in there?
- 2:27Speaker 2: No? No, no'm an die sec is that is there?
- 2:30Speaker 1: Is that the reason why you specifically asked for just
- 2:32Speaker 1: the marinara sauce? Yeah, so you like it like playing,
- 2:35Speaker 1: so you can work it up exactly and I can
- 2:38Speaker 1: really judge your spaghetti right now.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well, look, this is again the broke me. I've evolved.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I can make my own pace. Believe you've evolved, but
- 2:47Speaker 2: it broke me. Yeah, It's like it started off with
- 2:50Speaker 2: just pasta sauce and spaghetti.
- 2:51Speaker 3: But I was like, this is boring, and then I
- 2:53Speaker 3: was like, okay, well I can actually like put some
- 2:54Speaker 3: little veggies in here. I forgot to ask for mushrooms.
- 2:57Speaker 3: There's some mushrooms in here. The whole thing and the
- 3:00Speaker 3: cool thing I like about this dish. This is why
- 3:02Speaker 3: this is the best broke dish. Ladies and gentlemen, this
- 3:05Speaker 3: is very versatile. Okay, ground beef, some veggies chopped up.
- 3:11Speaker 3: You can do a lot of things. You can make
- 3:12Speaker 3: that a stir fried. You put rice under it, you
- 3:15Speaker 3: got add sauce, make a spaghetti. You could turn these.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Into meatballs and make a meatball sandwich. So this is
- 3:22Speaker 2: just the base of a lot of meal.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I feel like you really do cook.
- 3:26Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay, we see you. Okay, take us back, man,
- 3:34Speaker 1: take us back to what was going on in the
- 3:36Speaker 1: time of the spaghetti. And by the way, I was
- 3:39Speaker 1: thoroughly impressed how you just turned that dish into like
- 3:42Speaker 1: a quadruple threat. So I know you know what you're
- 3:45Speaker 1: talking about.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I just think it's important for us young people and
- 3:47Speaker 3: people just in general to get back into cooking for ourselves.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And like I fall victim to it all the time.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Uber eats or.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Uber eats.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Oh so you have this show, you'll be eating five
- 3:59Speaker 2: times you don't even know you.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I love how you sit here thinking like, oh, she
- 4:05Speaker 1: is she living on every successful person's broke this for
- 4:09Speaker 1: the rest of her life. Just thirty days of a week.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You think I'll be in broke dishes.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I saw the schedule. You got breakfast and then you
- 4:16Speaker 2: got lunch. She got dinner dialed in tonight. Look she
- 4:19Speaker 2: bringing left over his home.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Look, yo, let me tell you something. Let me tell
- 4:22Speaker 1: you something about this show. Though some of the dishes
- 4:24Speaker 1: on this show are really good. The last dish I ate,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm telling you fire, that was fire. I'm going home
- 4:30Speaker 1: and I'm making it for me and my daughter.
- 4:32Speaker 2: For there is.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Some dishes so good on this show that I have
- 4:37Speaker 1: literally went home, ordered the dishes and tried to recreate it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Never as good as the talent has created it. And
- 4:43Speaker 1: you and I used to lie to my husband and
- 4:46Speaker 1: I would tell him like, I came up with the dish,
- 4:49Speaker 1: oh wow, be careful, yes, and then and then he
- 4:54Speaker 1: eventually caught on. And so now if he sees me
- 4:57Speaker 1: come home with tupperware after a day of shooting, he'd
- 4:59Speaker 1: be like, what's that. I'm not eating it. I'm like, what,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you don't even know if it's good. He's like, I'm
- 5:03Speaker 1: not eating it? All right when I get it? Okay,
- 5:06Speaker 1: that's so take me back. What was going on when
- 5:11Speaker 1: you were eating spaghetti? I mean, this was obviously spaghetti's
- 5:16Speaker 1: a staple dish, but like when you were struggling, when.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I was struggling to doing this, I mean, look, it
- 5:20Speaker 3: started off probably when I was going to junior college.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I was out in junior college. I was going to
- 5:25Speaker 2: junior college out in San Diego, and I knew.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I wanted to be in entertainment. I knew I wanted
- 5:29Speaker 3: to do music. I knew wanted to be an actor. Actually,
- 5:31Speaker 3: I really wanted to be an actor as a kid.
- 5:35Speaker 3: But until then, I had some like little weird jobs.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know. I literally worked everywhere. I was the kind
- 5:39Speaker 2: of person I was. Just I went at Jamaican, I
- 5:41Speaker 2: had like twenty jobs.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Are Jamaica.
- 5:42Speaker 2: No, I'm saying, like a Jamaican you got twenty jobs.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I thought we had something else in common.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Jamaicans do think that I'm Jamaican, as my dreads that
- 5:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Nah, I didn't think you were Jamaican until you said it.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But then I was like, no, he ain't no Jamaican.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Jamaican you are.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that, but go on.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So, yeah, this is just like college broke shway, you
- 6:00Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Like I was working. I was
- 6:04Speaker 2: working at this music rental shop that rented out like speakers,
- 6:09Speaker 2: and I hated the job, but.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I was just trying to stay immersed in music. I
- 6:12Speaker 3: was trying to act like I was doing school, but
- 6:15Speaker 3: I wasn't getting any credits. Like I was basically just
- 6:17Speaker 3: flunking out of class. And that's kind of when I
- 6:20Speaker 3: wanted to, Like, I was just really focused on just
- 6:23Speaker 3: trying to figure out how I was going to get.
- 6:25Speaker 1: The entertainment thing going, you know, primarily acting.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Acting, But in college I kind of was giving up
- 6:31Speaker 3: my acting low key and like transitioning into music and
- 6:34Speaker 3: like that's where in San Diego was starting to like
- 6:37Speaker 3: I was on Craigslist looking for bandmates and shit like that.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And yeah, after a while, I quit going to school
- 6:44Speaker 3: in San Diego and moved back to Malibu where I
- 6:47Speaker 3: grew up.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And I know it sounds like I grew up in a.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Rich ass town because I was about to come get you.
- 6:51Speaker 1: What's the Malibu situation? The heck, let me tell you.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I already know your story is going to be interesting. Okay,
- 6:58Speaker 1: your music is different as a tras, No you could
- 7:02Speaker 1: just let's just just put it right here.
- 7:05Speaker 2: We don't have any trash cans. We don't have any
- 7:06Speaker 2: trash cans at this time.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Take me back to Malibu. So you you were back
- 7:09Speaker 1: home to Malibu, Okay.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Freak, it's like first Prinson Bell there and stuff, like
- 7:15Speaker 3: I moved to Malibu, uh, to live with my grandparents
- 7:19Speaker 3: when when I was five years old.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So I lived, lived in on the beach and stuff.
- 7:25Speaker 2: They lived close to the beach, the beach, but very
- 7:27Speaker 2: close to the beach. We lived in a mobile home park.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But in Malibu it's like really glamorous and ship.
- 7:33Speaker 1: You put me in a mobile home park and mallible,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'll take it.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Look and this mobile home park there are a million
- 7:38Speaker 3: dollars mobile homes and shff like that.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But my grandparents were just really fortunate and they and they.
- 7:42Speaker 3: They bought into Malibu in like the seventies, so sheep,
- 7:45Speaker 3: So we kind of got grandfathered in no intended nice
- 7:48Speaker 3: you did, you know what I'm saying. So, yeah, I
- 7:50Speaker 3: grew up in Malibu, but I grew up, like, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 3: in the very lower middle class in Malibu. And you
- 7:57Speaker 3: know my grandma, which in itself gave me some drive.
- 8:01Speaker 3: It's because all my friends were hella rich, you know
- 8:03Speaker 3: what I'm saying, And I was. I was in the
- 8:05Speaker 3: mobile home park, you know, doing my thing.
- 8:07Speaker 2: But no, honestly, growing up there, I couldn't have picked
- 8:09Speaker 2: a better situation like living by the beach my whole life.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So you went to live with them at five? Where
- 8:14Speaker 1: were your parents?
- 8:17Speaker 2: So my mom was in Florida at the time.
- 8:20Speaker 1: But I love how you're handling this meet. I didn't
- 8:22Speaker 1: know you was gonna do all this. I would have
- 8:24Speaker 1: got you plastic gloves.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Or something, plastic gloves, growth the hell.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Just so because you're gonna tell no, no, no, my.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Hands are clean. I just washed them right now in
- 8:31Speaker 2: the bathroom. Okay.
- 8:32Speaker 1: No, I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about you
- 8:34Speaker 1: touching the MIC's. Eventually everyone does that. They'll touch the
- 8:37Speaker 1: me on this show if you guys are listeners, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: at some point they'll go like this, and at some
- 8:41Speaker 1: point they'll move there here out of their face. I've
- 8:43Speaker 1: literally had to pull crown beef out of girls here,
- 8:46Speaker 1: okay on the show like Home. Still, girl, you got
- 8:48Speaker 1: a piece of If I get.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Grabbed beef in my head, to leave it, just leave
- 8:52Speaker 2: it right. They don't even tell me.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:54Speaker 3: But yeah, So I grew up, So I grew up
- 8:56Speaker 3: in Malibu with my grandparents. Not not many people of
- 8:58Speaker 3: color out there, you're gonna mean. And I grew up
- 9:01Speaker 3: with not tons of money, but I grew up with
- 9:03Speaker 3: mad love. And my grandparents were amazing because my grandparents, again,
- 9:09Speaker 3: they weren't rich, but they I never saw them work
- 9:11Speaker 3: for anybody. You did what I'm saying, Like like my grandparents,
- 9:14Speaker 3: my grandfather, they were both in the arts. So my grandfather,
- 9:18Speaker 3: you know, like aspiring actor, my grandmother an actress. But
- 9:22Speaker 3: while they're waiting for those things to pop, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 3: my grandfather said fuck it, like I'll be the handyman
- 9:27Speaker 3: for these rich people, like I'll go fix these houses.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And my grandma did decide business where she would have
- 9:31Speaker 3: had like a cleaning business. So we were like service people.
- 9:35Speaker 3: You did what I'm saying in this rich town. And
- 9:39Speaker 3: so that's what I was around, you know, tons of
- 9:40Speaker 3: rich people. I grew up not having tons of dope,
- 9:43Speaker 3: but it gave me your drive to be like, all right,
- 9:45Speaker 3: let's get let's let's get this paper, let's see.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Like how I can be creative and find my way
- 9:50Speaker 2: in this world.
- 9:51Speaker 1: And yeah, were your parents like what happened where you
- 9:55Speaker 1: ended up with them? Though?
- 9:56Speaker 3: My parents told me when they were young, so I
- 10:01Speaker 3: guess at the end of the day that this couldn't
- 10:02Speaker 3: really raise me. You know, my mom I was having
- 10:05Speaker 3: some drug and alcohol problems when I was living with
- 10:07Speaker 3: her in Florida, and she ended up like in the
- 10:11Speaker 3: hospital or something. And then one of my aunts got
- 10:14Speaker 3: in touch on my grandma and sent me out to
- 10:15Speaker 3: go live with my grandparents, which I thought was just
- 10:17Speaker 3: gonna be a temporary, temporary thing. But when I got here,
- 10:23Speaker 3: I was like, can I please stay here? Like, yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 3: of course, please Can I stay here and not go back?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Type of situation. And you know, my grandmother was the
- 10:31Speaker 3: one who championed it. My grandmother, Candice. She's amazing. She's
- 10:33Speaker 3: my mother's mom, and she's the rock in the family.
- 10:37Speaker 3: She's an incredible woman. I get a lot of my
- 10:41Speaker 3: ambition and drive from my grandmother, for sure. And my
- 10:45Speaker 3: grandma said, you staying here, baby, and literally yeah, enrolled
- 10:50Speaker 3: me into kindergarten. You know, I had I was all
- 10:53Speaker 3: messed up. I was like I had ringworms, I was
- 10:55Speaker 3: all skinny, mountain nourished, the whole shit, you know.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And my grandma took me in, you know, and and
- 11:01Speaker 2: changed my life. Yeah, and my grandfather as well.
- 11:04Speaker 3: You know, they both what's beautiful about them is they
- 11:08Speaker 3: were done raising kids. They were in their you know,
- 11:11Speaker 3: fifties and sixties, Their kids were all grown, and they
- 11:17Speaker 3: were like chilling in their little mobile home park moving
- 11:19Speaker 3: their life doing their acting stuff, and then here I come,
- 11:22Speaker 3: so thank y'all for taking a second chance and decided
- 11:27Speaker 3: to have a whole nother life with me, because yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 3: it really helped me out obviously.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah you know what I mean. But beautiful when you
- 11:33Speaker 1: add that to the malleable part of the story. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: so you went back after college, You went back to
- 11:41Speaker 1: and you had did you have to tell your your
- 11:43Speaker 1: grandparents that you were flunking out of school?
- 11:45Speaker 3: They knew it was messed up too, because I was
- 11:48Speaker 3: getting all these grants all like you know, like kind
- 11:50Speaker 3: of like financial aid type shit for the books and
- 11:53Speaker 3: all that, and.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I would start strong week one.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I was killing them with the organization, was turning in
- 12:01Speaker 3: homework and it was just yeah, we just I went.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I went. That was my second college. I went to
- 12:07Speaker 2: Pierce College in I know, Pierce in the Valley. I
- 12:10Speaker 2: went to Pierce in the Valley. First I did I
- 12:13Speaker 2: did music theory and I did like I took to
- 12:16Speaker 2: a couple I took a few classes just to get
- 12:18Speaker 2: my credits. I played basketball for PEERCE for a little bit.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I couldn't hang So where'd you go? And say you
- 12:24Speaker 1: went to a four year in San Diego.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Or another junior college.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Why did you even do that?
- 12:29Speaker 3: Because I was just you know, no, it was the
- 12:32Speaker 3: whole thing, like, you know, my grandparents are old school,
- 12:34Speaker 3: so it's like, go get your education, get out the house.
- 12:38Speaker 3: You know, you graduated high school. You got to get
- 12:39Speaker 3: you can't stay here. So I was all right, cool,
- 12:42Speaker 3: So Pierce didn't work. So then I was like, all right,
- 12:45Speaker 3: maybe if I go somewhere, like, you know, kind of
- 12:47Speaker 3: further away. Sanday was only three hours away. Got a
- 12:50Speaker 3: little house with me and like three of my homies,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and that's where I first started to loking weed.
- 12:55Speaker 2: To be honest, that San Diego little house, and yeah,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I think those two college situations let me know that
- 13:02Speaker 3: college wasn't for me, but at least I got the
- 13:03Speaker 3: experience of it.
- 13:04Speaker 2: In San Diego.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I purposely chose that college because it was right next
- 13:08Speaker 3: to San Diego State. So I didn't go to San
- 13:10Speaker 3: Diego State, but I was party, but.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I was getting the I was getting the experience of.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So I got my college experience.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I didn't get no credits, but I was out there
- 13:20Speaker 3: partying and doing my thing and having fun. And then
- 13:24Speaker 3: I moved back to La started my band up. You know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: it was a little mix between hip hop and rock.
- 13:32Speaker 3: A big inspiration for me was, you know, Pharrell and
- 13:35Speaker 3: Nard in Search of It still my favorite albums ever.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And so it was cool for me to see Pharrell
- 13:45Speaker 3: because you know, like I told you, I grew up
- 13:47Speaker 3: in an all white neighborhood, rich ass neighborhood.
- 13:49Speaker 2: So my style as I was growing up, I was
- 13:52Speaker 2: just trying to figure out what it was. You know,
- 13:54Speaker 2: am I a skater?
- 13:55Speaker 3: As I got older and started playing basketball, I would
- 13:58Speaker 3: hang out from more black kids from the city who
- 14:00Speaker 3: would clown me like, Yo, what the fuck is.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Up with your hairline? Like how you talk? Crazy? Like?
- 14:05Speaker 3: So once I had that, I had to like figure
- 14:08Speaker 3: out like what my style was or how I fit in.
- 14:10Speaker 3: And then Farrell came out with fucking the rock shit
- 14:12Speaker 3: the trucker hat. He grew up on the beach town,
- 14:16Speaker 3: so I really connected with for I was like, oh shit, okay,
- 14:19Speaker 3: I see this vibe. Yeah I can do this. Yeah,
- 14:23Speaker 3: And so you know I kind of started inspired me
- 14:26Speaker 3: to start this little rock band that I had, and
- 14:30Speaker 3: and that's where my hustle started. I mean, we were
- 14:31Speaker 3: selling you know, merch out the trunk and playing shows
- 14:35Speaker 3: all over the town.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And were you the one that was responsible? You're the
- 14:39Speaker 1: one that put together the group, so you were the
- 14:40Speaker 1: one responsible for booking the shows.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Wow, So you're like the leader of the group.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Like I told you, Like my grandparents are all little hustles.
- 14:47Speaker 3: My grandmother is like a producer. I've watched her my
- 14:50Speaker 3: whole life, like put on events, on golf tournaments, put
- 14:54Speaker 3: on fundraisers.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So I just I love that. I love putting things together.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Oh we gotta you need to book some shit, all right,
- 15:01Speaker 3: I'll holler at them, you know what I'm saying. So yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 3: that has always been like something that I love. All Right,
- 15:07Speaker 3: to the dish. We got the ground beef, we got
- 15:10Speaker 3: the onions, yea, and garlic right, and the garlic.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It's simmering.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're talking like a shift.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Do you hear me?
- 15:17Speaker 1: You're hilarious.
- 15:19Speaker 2: It's simmering.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And guys, this meal is cheap at shit, one dollar
- 15:25Speaker 4: and fifty cents probably for this since since you know
- 15:29Speaker 4: what I mean, you go to like Chick fil a,
- 15:31Speaker 4: you spend ten, thirteen, fourteen dollars on this.
- 15:33Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 15:35Speaker 3: So you might as well come home and just you
- 15:37Speaker 3: hear me. After this, we'll do a whole other cooking
- 15:40Speaker 3: shit on all other shit.
- 15:41Speaker 1: You're hilarious. By the way, we always invite if you're
- 15:44Speaker 1: like a creative and you do cooking, you're more than
- 15:46Speaker 1: welcome to use our studio and take advantage of it
- 15:48Speaker 1: because we're the only cook top studio in Don't.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Tip me because I'm gonna be here like trying to
- 15:54Speaker 2: cook some little YouTube for I.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Meal prep every just so you know, I know you
- 15:58Speaker 1: think I live off eating one broke dishes. I meial
- 16:01Speaker 1: prep every Sunday and Wednesday. Okay, I eat all home
- 16:05Speaker 1: cooked meals. That's why I don't uber eat buddy, So.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Sunday you only meal prepper two day. Sunday, Monday Tuesday
- 16:13Speaker 2: meal prep the whole week.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But every once in a while, like if I have
- 16:17Speaker 1: friends come over, right, I give them a meal prep
- 16:20Speaker 1: my neighbor whoever, and trust me that meal prep will
- 16:24Speaker 1: dwindow real quick. But I meil prep every meal and
- 16:26Speaker 1: I eat I basically what I make for my daughter,
- 16:30Speaker 1: like her meal. Her lunchbox is super impressive, but mine
- 16:33Speaker 1: is like half impressive.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's hers, So I like that taking care of how
- 16:38Speaker 2: old your daughter three? So yeah, congratulations mama. Okay.
- 16:55Speaker 3: So after I had my band for a while, we
- 16:57Speaker 3: were playing a lot locally, like all over California, like
- 17:01Speaker 3: from this place, a legendary location called the Malibu in
- 17:05Speaker 3: which is located obviously in Malibu, and so that was
- 17:08Speaker 3: the place we were playing a lot. We would play
- 17:09Speaker 3: all up and down the coast from coast to Mesa,
- 17:11Speaker 3: San Diego, just building a vibe. I ended up meeting
- 17:17Speaker 3: this Cisco Aldler, who is the son of Blue Eldler,
- 17:21Speaker 3: legendary producer. Cisco also lived in Malibu and had like
- 17:26Speaker 3: some success with his band and all that stuff. And
- 17:31Speaker 3: a homegirl of mine was a mutual friend, and she
- 17:33Speaker 3: was like, yo, you know, Cisco makes beats. And at
- 17:35Speaker 3: the time, my writing was primarily to just like guitars
- 17:39Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I wasn't like a I wouldn't consider myself a traditional
- 17:43Speaker 2: rapper at this point. You know. I was very like
- 17:45Speaker 2: inspired by like the red Hot Chili Peppers and rage
- 17:48Speaker 2: against the machine, like rock shit.
- 17:50Speaker 3: But I couldn't sing, so I would rap you did
- 17:54Speaker 3: what I'm saying, So I would like musically and and texturally,
- 17:57Speaker 3: I was into.
- 17:58Speaker 2: The rock stuff, but I was rapping. Yeah, So then
- 18:01Speaker 2: I'm at Cisco.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But I love how you were like very authentically true
- 18:05Speaker 1: to you, like you see it play out but gone continue.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Thank you. I appreciate it.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Now you can interrupt me for a comliment anytime you want.
- 18:13Speaker 3: But so, so you know, I went to a show
- 18:19Speaker 3: at the Malibu And which was the place we all
- 18:21Speaker 3: kicked it, like this was the place where anyone who
- 18:24Speaker 3: had a band in Malibi would go play. And Cisco's
- 18:27Speaker 3: band of the time was a popping band, White Star,
- 18:29Speaker 3: and all the girls would go to the show.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So I was pulling up to the White Star shows
- 18:32Speaker 2: for sure, all the chicks were.
- 18:33Speaker 3: There was a fire situation, and before he went on stage,
- 18:38Speaker 3: I hopped on the mic and I started freesing down.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I was like, I'm the only black kid in Malibu,
- 18:41Speaker 3: blah blah blah, the k the crowd and crazy, which
- 18:45Speaker 3: which then allowed me to like link up with Cisco
- 18:47Speaker 3: because he saw me do my thing and we made
- 18:48Speaker 3: a song together. And once we started making music together,
- 18:51Speaker 3: we kind of found a really cool vibe, like I
- 18:54Speaker 3: had my authentic broke raw Malibu story with his because
- 19:01Speaker 3: he's about maybe eight or nine years older than me,
- 19:03Speaker 3: so he had some good experience on production and vibes.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So and we were both from Malibu. So I think
- 19:10Speaker 2: that both of our separate stories from Malibou.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Kind of coming together, you know, like made like a
- 19:17Speaker 3: really cool sound, you know, and we're kind of from
- 19:20Speaker 3: two different kind of things in Malibu, but bringing our
- 19:22Speaker 3: stories together, bringing his melodies and his experience with my rawness, I.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Think it kind of just complimented each other and right away.
- 19:31Speaker 3: It's like one of those things where when you have
- 19:33Speaker 3: something that's fired, it kind of shows itself right away,
- 19:36Speaker 3: Like you know, the fourth song we ever made together
- 19:39Speaker 3: was was one of our biggest songs and kind of
- 19:41Speaker 3: the one that kind of sept the tone of our vibe.
- 19:43Speaker 3: And back then it was my Space, remember my Space?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Back then it was my Space And what was cool
- 19:49Speaker 3: about my Space is.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You know I was like how much time? All right?
- 20:00Speaker 2: All right? All right? She got an internal clock. Ladies
- 20:03Speaker 2: and gentlemen, real cook, uh.
- 20:10Speaker 1: No, tell me tell me talking about are we talking about?
- 20:17Speaker 1: What's the name of the single that we're talking about?
- 20:19Speaker 2: Oh?
- 20:19Speaker 3: So, Buzzing was the first song that that we made
- 20:22Speaker 3: that we were like, ooh, this is fire, like this
- 20:25Speaker 3: is this feels interesting. The first thing I would do
- 20:28Speaker 3: is I would send it to like all my homegirls locally,
- 20:31Speaker 3: because for me, it's like I'm making music for the girls.
- 20:33Speaker 3: At least back then, it was very specifically like if
- 20:35Speaker 3: the girls aren't happy, then I'm not happy, Like does
- 20:38Speaker 3: this sound good?
- 20:38Speaker 2: Okay? We got a bang?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Okay? So I love the you know what I mean?
- 20:44Speaker 3: I mean, what am I doing here? I liked them
- 20:45Speaker 3: on the guys thing too, but you know what I mean.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I'm back then I was focused on that. So I
- 20:49Speaker 3: was sent all the girls and right away they'd be like,
- 20:52Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, like I love this, and
- 20:54Speaker 3: they would put on the playlist and stuff like that.
- 20:55Speaker 3: And back then on MySpace you could put songs up
- 20:59Speaker 3: for download, like we would make a song. I put
- 21:01Speaker 3: it up from my Space the same night, not mix nothing,
- 21:03Speaker 3: just put it up for download. If I got two
- 21:06Speaker 3: hundred downloads, I would be running around the house.
- 21:08Speaker 2: So excited, like playing my ship right now. So that's
- 21:13Speaker 2: that's why I did for a good year with Cisco,
- 21:15Speaker 2: we make a song.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I didn't remember my Space had that feature, but.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, as a as a musician, on the music pages. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:24Speaker 3: you can put your you can put your music up
- 21:26Speaker 3: and you can have your little thing in the new
- 21:27Speaker 3: songs and.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You can have it for download. And that changed everything
- 21:30Speaker 2: because then I would go to every every hot girl.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I would go on her page and post my thing,
- 21:36Speaker 3: just like I was sitting there all day and just
- 21:37Speaker 3: post the post post and started a building. Then before
- 21:39Speaker 3: no on, I'm selling out shows and we're doing all
- 21:41Speaker 3: this kind of you know, all these big shows like
- 21:44Speaker 3: locally and stuff like that. And that's really how it
- 21:46Speaker 3: happened MySpace and just like constantly dropping songs and then
- 21:51Speaker 3: we got an opportunity to have a meeting with someone
- 21:54Speaker 3: and we ended up getting a record deal.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Wow, And yeah it was cool. By the time we
- 22:00Speaker 2: were already sold.
- 22:01Speaker 1: What was your first record deal? Good?
- 22:03Speaker 2: It was good. It was good.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I have to ask because I hear horror stories.
- 22:08Speaker 3: You know, I lucked out, like you know, because again,
- 22:12Speaker 3: like the deal overall was good. The only problem with
- 22:16Speaker 3: the record deal was nothing wrong with the actual deal
- 22:19Speaker 3: part of it. But when they didn't like believe in it,
- 22:23Speaker 3: they didn't push it anymore, you do know what I mean?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Like the first thingle they pushed second thingle they kind
- 22:27Speaker 3: of pushed and then they never pushed anything else.
- 22:30Speaker 2: So it's like you're under the kind of control of
- 22:33Speaker 2: their motivation.
- 22:34Speaker 3: If they're hyped on you, if they're a fucking gung
- 22:36Speaker 3: hole and they have the whole engine behind you, then
- 22:39Speaker 3: life is beautiful.
- 22:40Speaker 1: But did you when they didn't push, did you find
- 22:43Speaker 1: the motivation to push harder? Or did they limit was
- 22:45Speaker 1: their limitations?
- 22:48Speaker 3: We spent our own money, got our own independent radio
- 22:52Speaker 3: team once the major label radio wasn't like getting behind it,
- 22:56Speaker 3: but it just didn't hit the same and you know,
- 23:00Speaker 3: who knows, maybe the single wasn't as good or who
- 23:02Speaker 3: knows what the reason is, But you just feel the
- 23:05Speaker 3: energy shift if they're not really on you, Like when
- 23:08Speaker 3: we first came there on us, you know, we had
- 23:09Speaker 3: to show on MTV we all this shit boom, We're popping.
- 23:12Speaker 3: So then I think we were still putting out great music.
- 23:14Speaker 3: I just think that, yeah, the attention wasn't there for us,
- 23:17Speaker 3: So we were able to get out of the deal
- 23:19Speaker 3: after the second album okay and been independent ever since.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Wow Okay, So don't hate on me. I'm trying to
- 23:28Speaker 2: ship right now. M that's ready. So you didn't even
- 23:33Speaker 2: tell me.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Do you want to know something? I like about how
- 23:35Speaker 1: you did that. You look like a real cook. When
- 23:37Speaker 1: you did that, you look like a real cook. You
- 23:40Speaker 1: didn't throw it. You could have been like, I'm gonna
- 23:41Speaker 1: put it on the table, so he just sticks. I like,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I like how you did that, though he threw it
- 23:46Speaker 1: in his mouth. How does a mug?
- 23:47Speaker 2: I was like, gee, I'm growing on her, ladies and gentlemen.
- 23:52Speaker 1: As he burns the whole table trying to pour it.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Careful, careful.
- 23:57Speaker 1: By the way, you didn't notice this, but you touched
- 24:00Speaker 1: your beard and there's beef in there. No, there's no
- 24:03Speaker 1: beef in there. But I was thinking, why is the
- 24:08Speaker 1: people do this on the shore? Everyone has to touch
- 24:10Speaker 1: their here. Okay, So when you guys went independent, what
- 24:18Speaker 1: kind of mouths, like, what kind of pivotal moments did
- 24:22Speaker 1: you hit?
- 24:23Speaker 3: And it was cool because, like, you know, it took
- 24:26Speaker 3: me back to like when I was a kid in
- 24:28Speaker 3: out selling the ship on my trunk, Like I like
- 24:31Speaker 3: having being a part of every single bit. Once I
- 24:34Speaker 3: got on the record label side, you know, there's a
- 24:36Speaker 3: million people working for you, so you kind of like
- 24:39Speaker 3: back up and there's people doing this kind of ship,
- 24:41Speaker 3: like i'mproving shit.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah cool, but like not so much hands in the
- 24:44Speaker 2: fucking dirt.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But how was the recooping on that, like on.
- 24:47Speaker 2: The on the first album, on the first couple, Yeah, it.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Wasn't stressful because they're spending all this money, but you
- 24:52Speaker 1: kind of have a say, but you kind of don't
- 24:54Speaker 1: and then you have to pay for it all.
- 24:56Speaker 3: No, Luckily we did have a say and all that
- 24:58Speaker 3: stuff I had, like the you know, experience of all
- 25:02Speaker 3: these other people who've been signed before me and having
- 25:04Speaker 3: all these horror stories that we were kind of coming
- 25:06Speaker 3: into a hip, Like we didn't go crazy on the
- 25:09Speaker 3: events and we didn't go crazy all that shit.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Okay, you know what I mean.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But independent, you do feel the money quicker. I mean, look,
- 25:17Speaker 3: there's pros and cons when you're independent. You get all
- 25:19Speaker 3: your money, you know what I'm saying, But they might
- 25:21Speaker 3: be able to market you a little better. But at
- 25:24Speaker 3: the same time, you just gotta look close to get
- 25:26Speaker 3: the contract because everything comes back and you got to
- 25:29Speaker 3: recoup it before.
- 25:29Speaker 2: You get your money.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Do you think that your deal was really good because
- 25:32Speaker 1: you had built a loyal fan base and they knew
- 25:35Speaker 1: no matter what they were going to get majority of
- 25:37Speaker 1: their money back.
- 25:38Speaker 3: That and I'm not going to hold you Like my
- 25:39Speaker 3: partner at the time, Cisco, like his dad is a
- 25:41Speaker 3: g in the industry. So I did get the benefit
- 25:44Speaker 3: of like having some of their experience and like their
- 25:47Speaker 3: protection a bit going into the deal, you know what
- 25:49Speaker 3: I mean. But yeah, I think that even still with
- 25:54Speaker 3: all that, you know, they lost interest Loki and I
- 25:57Speaker 3: think that you know, our second the album. When I
- 26:00Speaker 3: go play that live, it's people some people's favorite album,
- 26:04Speaker 3: you know. But you know, they lost singer John Matt.
- 26:06Speaker 2: But it was blessing in disguise because it's like I
- 26:10Speaker 2: was able to go and do this independent thing.
- 26:13Speaker 1: This is pretty much done, and it smells done. It
- 26:15Speaker 1: smells so good. It smells really good.
- 26:19Speaker 2: She acting surprised. You know what I'm saying.
- 26:22Speaker 1: You know what sucks is that, like I'm gonna risk
- 26:24Speaker 1: eating this beef because it smells good. I'm gonna take
- 26:26Speaker 1: a little bit, but I'm technically not allowed to.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Oh you can eat a little bit. It's grass fed too.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I can't digest beef. Okay, guys, so I never eat.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It on the show. Tell your husband I'm sorry. In advance.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Well, it's actually my future.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I thought you would flirting a little bit at.
- 26:54Speaker 1: It's too much fun over here, too much fun. By
- 26:57Speaker 1: the way, it's slazy travels with a dog. And it
- 27:00Speaker 1: was just sidebar just to give you guys a full
- 27:03Speaker 1: like background of how he is. But like he was
- 27:07Speaker 1: even hinting that his dog stay in the studio. But
- 27:10Speaker 1: his dog breathing was so loud that we had to say,
- 27:14Speaker 1: excuse me, because your dog breathes. But look how beautiful
- 27:18Speaker 1: it is now. See like if you were like, look,
- 27:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it look better. That's how they do
- 27:24Speaker 1: it on the chef shows. The episode they do the
- 27:27Speaker 1: little do you watch the Bear?
- 27:28Speaker 2: I watched the first season. I got tired of the yelling,
- 27:32Speaker 2: but yeah, first season was great.
- 27:33Speaker 1: See that's how I know you didn't grow up in
- 27:35Speaker 1: a too much traumatic childhood because people that have like
- 27:38Speaker 1: traumatic childhoods like shameless torture, bad parenting, you know, like
- 27:44Speaker 1: Bill burn Sebastian. I like my favorite comics because they
- 27:47Speaker 1: grow Did you burn yourself?
- 27:49Speaker 2: Not at all?
- 27:49Speaker 1: You know, I don't have insurance right forbid them all?
- 27:52Speaker 1: Ever hears this show?
- 27:54Speaker 3: Nope, Nope, I never heard nothing. No, look, great show.
- 27:57Speaker 3: I'm kidding, great job, great show. Three seasons of a
- 28:00Speaker 3: lot one was perfect. Yeah that I'm staying there.
- 28:05Speaker 2: But yes I did.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I will admit the second, the whatever season. This is
- 28:09Speaker 1: the beer. I'm not really, I'm not really.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I'm like, I gotta change.
- 28:15Speaker 1: You had a good Yeah. I'm happy that you had
- 28:17Speaker 1: your grandparents. Okay, I'm used to it. I'm like numb
- 28:21Speaker 1: to it.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Don't play by me.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I'm like past, that's okay. Let's try this amazing dish. Everybody, Okay, plated. Man,
- 28:32Speaker 1: I wish this was like impossible.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Me next time. Now I know.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Uh, this is how you know I respect and care
- 28:39Speaker 1: about you and wanted This is how you know that
- 28:42Speaker 1: I wanted you on the show because I didn't object.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Today.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Let's go get here, we go, smell so good, nice
- 28:54Speaker 3: and easy, broke me, ladies and gentlemen.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Not only did you do that, the whole irony is
- 29:00Speaker 1: you did a phenomenal job on the spaghetti. Like you
- 29:04Speaker 1: you boiled it without a timer? Are you impressed with that?
- 29:08Speaker 1: You had an internal clock because you naturally went in
- 29:11Speaker 1: there without a reminder.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Right right. I was like, oh, there it is.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It was actually the most properly boiled spaghetti in the
- 29:16Speaker 1: history of this show, because people always.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Overtook the because you don't want it too soft, you
- 29:20Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like it's then it's a whole
- 29:21Speaker 3: different things.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:23Speaker 2: The Italians like a dente, so even like lowki hard.
- 29:27Speaker 1: But I'm gonna tell you you'd a great job the spaghetti.
- 29:35Speaker 1: What old glimer, Thank you. We need to hang out
- 29:39Speaker 1: where you just let your little internal clock. Now do
- 29:42Speaker 1: you trust yourself more.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Now to hang out and cook for you? I'm gonna
- 29:45Speaker 2: shove it over you. I cook cook. We ain't broke
- 29:48Speaker 2: no more. Baby, you see me, sit up, you stay,
- 29:54Speaker 2: I'm a wheel now.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I was really excited, actually, I mean the way I
- 29:57Speaker 3: was looking at it as we just had a big
- 30:01Speaker 3: machine pushing us for two years, and so we had
- 30:04Speaker 3: a lot of eyeballs on the on the project. So
- 30:07Speaker 3: I thought that independent we just take all those people
- 30:09Speaker 3: and just keep it rocking.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And it did what it did work like that. I mean,
- 30:13Speaker 2: we have a lot of that first album back.
- 30:17Speaker 3: I did one album with Cisco, I did one more
- 30:19Speaker 3: album with him and then we broke up. But that
- 30:22Speaker 3: next album I think did great. We did we did
- 30:24Speaker 3: like a massive national tour. Yeah, no, it was all positive.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I think that there was just a little There was
- 30:32Speaker 3: a time after that, after that third album where I
- 30:36Speaker 3: was like, all right, you know, what do I want
- 30:38Speaker 3: to do musically? Like what are my goals personally? You know,
- 30:42Speaker 3: one thing about being in a group is you always
- 30:44Speaker 3: tart to think about another person.
- 30:45Speaker 1: And it was like being in a relationship, right, It's
- 30:47Speaker 1: like being in a relationship. I have to ask, though,
- 30:49Speaker 1: why did y'all break up?
- 30:51Speaker 3: Honestly, it was just we were together all the time.
- 30:54Speaker 3: I mean, imagine like it was before we got signed.
- 30:59Speaker 3: You know, I was in there and music all day.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I think it was just.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Time to try something new, low key, like we made
- 31:05Speaker 3: three albums made probably like I don't know, a hundred songs,
- 31:10Speaker 3: and we were butting heads in some weird little ways,
- 31:13Speaker 3: and and yeah, I just think at that point I
- 31:18Speaker 3: was like, all right, I kind of want to work
- 31:19Speaker 3: with different people, and that kind of didn't rub the
- 31:22Speaker 3: right way with everyone, and so it was a time
- 31:25Speaker 3: where I'd be like, all right, like let me break away.
- 31:28Speaker 2: From this completely.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Are you guys still cool?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we're cool.
- 31:33Speaker 3: You know, Like my man has a beautiful family, great son,
- 31:37Speaker 3: he's a great kid. His son and my son are friends.
- 31:40Speaker 3: When we see each other, it's all love. I've actually
- 31:42Speaker 3: never even spoken about.
- 31:43Speaker 2: This like this in a way like that.
- 31:44Speaker 1: So but because I'm sure everybody wants to know, to
- 31:47Speaker 1: be honest, yeah no, literally.
- 31:49Speaker 3: People always say that was there something like like and
- 31:52Speaker 3: honestly not, there wasn't like anything. Just like any relationship,
- 31:57Speaker 3: there's arguments. Yeah, there's argument and disagreements and this and
- 32:01Speaker 3: that and more or less. I just I think we're
- 32:05Speaker 3: both alphas, you know, and oh yeah those but we're
- 32:09Speaker 3: both alphas. And I was kind of getting stuck in
- 32:12Speaker 3: a place where I was only rapping the verses, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 3: which is fine.
- 32:17Speaker 2: You know, he was singing the hook. I roped the verses.
- 32:19Speaker 3: But like I'm a Gemini, I like I get I
- 32:22Speaker 3: get bored with things, and I want to be able
- 32:25Speaker 3: to like sing the hook.
- 32:25Speaker 2: I want to produce a song. I want to work
- 32:27Speaker 2: with this person.
- 32:28Speaker 3: And so if it feels like a hindrance to do
- 32:31Speaker 3: like anything like that, it becomes an environment where I'm
- 32:33Speaker 3: just like not having fun.
- 32:35Speaker 2: And if I'm not having fun, why am I doing this?
- 32:38Speaker 1: And as an artist, I think it's like a natural
- 32:39Speaker 1: part of evolution, right, if you've like kind of mastered
- 32:42Speaker 1: this one angle, you kind of want to just at
- 32:44Speaker 1: least feel.
- 32:44Speaker 3: What they try it out, Like, let me see if
- 32:46Speaker 3: I can do some harmonies. It might sound shitty at first,
- 32:49Speaker 3: but I'm gonna get it, you do what I mean. So,
- 32:52Speaker 3: I just wanted a space where I could grow and
- 32:55Speaker 3: as an artist, grow and just feel fulfilled, you know.
- 32:58Speaker 3: And a lot of times, you know, other people's feelings
- 33:03Speaker 3: are a factor sometimes, but I just felt that it
- 33:06Speaker 3: was important for my growth to just separate. And but
- 33:12Speaker 3: you know, it's funny because I think I've done a
- 33:15Speaker 3: lot solo, you know, I think I've proven to myself
- 33:17Speaker 3: that I can produce and songwrite and do all different
- 33:21Speaker 3: genres of music. And as much as I do, there
- 33:24Speaker 3: are still those few fans that are like, when are
- 33:25Speaker 3: you guys gonna get back together?
- 33:26Speaker 2: Which is hilarious, you know what I'm saying.
- 33:28Speaker 1: How do you feel when they respond like that positive?
- 33:32Speaker 2: The fact that anyone likes any of my music?
- 33:33Speaker 3: I feel blessed, you know, so, like you know, if
- 33:37Speaker 3: you're stuck in that era and that's and you haven't
- 33:39Speaker 3: followed Shwayz past any of that all good, like think,
- 33:42Speaker 3: I'm thankful for you, But I would say.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Does it ever make you want to rekindle? Though it
- 33:48Speaker 1: sounds like a real marriage, relations doesn't make you guys.
- 33:51Speaker 3: On It does a little bit, but it really is
- 33:53Speaker 3: a relationship, you know. Bro, I wish my bro Cisco
- 33:57Speaker 3: all the best. And I've been looking at his stuff recently.
- 34:01Speaker 3: He's doing his thing and he's very talented, a really
- 34:05Speaker 3: good dude, and so I wish nothing but the best
- 34:07Speaker 3: and if the right situation where I felt good about
- 34:11Speaker 3: it and it felt really easy. Of course I'm down,
- 34:14Speaker 3: But if I'm being honest right now, I'm just I
- 34:17Speaker 3: just feel so inspired off the new music that I'm making.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know I have a new album
- 34:23Speaker 2: coming out.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Actually, how did the Whiz Khalifa collab come about?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Yeah? So Wiz I've rubbers shoulders with for years, Like
- 34:31Speaker 2: I just bumped into him.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Always been a fan of his and the vibe he
- 34:35Speaker 3: puts out, you know what I'm saying, always positive.
- 34:39Speaker 2: So I kind of just reached out on this album.
- 34:41Speaker 3: On this album, I was just kind of like I
- 34:43Speaker 3: had most of the songs, you know, eighty percent done,
- 34:46Speaker 3: and I was just trying to figure out features, and
- 34:48Speaker 3: I was like, damn, Wiz will be fun, and it's
- 34:50Speaker 3: a you know, I do want to keep my fans happy.
- 34:55Speaker 3: So you know, sometimes fans will be like, go work
- 34:57Speaker 3: with the old Eye again, and I'll be like, but like,
- 35:00Speaker 3: what are you gonna make a song with? When are
- 35:01Speaker 3: you gonna make So that was just one that fans
- 35:04Speaker 3: have been asking for for a long time. And I
- 35:06Speaker 3: sent him a couple of demo ideas and he liked
- 35:09Speaker 3: the one we rocked, and he sent me a verse
- 35:11Speaker 3: and the rest of his sister. I just think that
- 35:25Speaker 3: I've come up with this philosophy that every song is
- 35:27Speaker 3: someone's favorite song, and so it helps me in the
- 35:30Speaker 3: studio too, because sometimes you know.
- 35:31Speaker 2: As a artist, you're harding yourself out. It's just weak out.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And now I'm just like, I want to put out
- 35:35Speaker 2: everything because.
- 35:36Speaker 3: I never know what, like who's gonna be in what
- 35:39Speaker 3: mood or like where they're gonna be in the life,
- 35:41Speaker 3: and it might help him. So yeah, like the people
- 35:43Speaker 3: who love the old stuff and love the nostalgic of
- 35:45Speaker 3: the old stuff, I'm so stoked on it. And then
- 35:48Speaker 3: people now I think ten years from now, to look
- 35:50Speaker 3: back at this time and be like, yo, Shway's been
- 35:52Speaker 3: making hits now.
- 35:53Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, I'm blessed to.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Love creation and I'm not running out of ideas anytime since.
- 36:01Speaker 3: So I just want to keep my rocking.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Do you think the secret to being a great artist
- 36:05Speaker 1: is that vulnerability? I personally think that, Like I think,
- 36:08Speaker 1: like what helps me be in love with and you
- 36:11Speaker 1: heard me talk about it before he came in, Like
- 36:14Speaker 1: it's something about like you living your life and being
- 36:16Speaker 1: like unapologetically you and where you're at at all times.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It makes it me able to be like, oh I
- 36:22Speaker 1: love you, I can grow with you, or maybe I'm
- 36:24Speaker 1: not with you right now, but at this period where
- 36:27Speaker 1: I'm with you ten years ago and then you know,
- 36:30Speaker 1: two years from now, I'm with you here and right
- 36:32Speaker 1: And honestly, you see my big painting to jay Z,
- 36:35Speaker 1: who I pray to Jesus one day, Oh my god,
- 36:37Speaker 1: he's gonna cook a broken this for me, crack on
- 36:41Speaker 1: the table, crack in front of us.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Gay I love it.
- 36:47Speaker 1: But you know what I'm saying, I feel like that
- 36:48Speaker 1: was the one artist for me that I was able
- 36:51Speaker 1: to like and I started listening to him really young,
- 36:53Speaker 1: but I was able to go okay this point. There
- 36:55Speaker 1: was albums that I absolutely hated of Jason Absolutely it
- 36:58Speaker 1: was like trash be like you're retarded. I'd be like, oh,
- 37:01Speaker 1: you are retarded. Or when Jay had a lot of money,
- 37:04Speaker 1: there was one album he put out where he was
- 37:06Speaker 1: talking about all these labels.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I was like, I can't relate this.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking you know, I never
- 37:12Speaker 1: even heard of this, you know what I'm saying. But
- 37:16Speaker 1: do you think that's the secret to being a great artist?
- 37:19Speaker 1: Is that willingness to go there? Or are do you
- 37:22Speaker 1: find making music in hopes of people liking it?
- 37:25Speaker 2: Is the key?
- 37:26Speaker 1: Like keeping up with the times? That's a genuine question.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it's a good question. I think.
- 37:34Speaker 3: I think that is a big key, just being honest.
- 37:38Speaker 3: The audience is very smart, you know, so if you're
- 37:40Speaker 3: being true to yourself, then I think there are things
- 37:43Speaker 3: that are more relatable. Like if I were to go
- 37:46Speaker 3: out and talk about like, you know, like I don't know,
- 37:49Speaker 3: some gang shit or some hood ship, I just think it.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Would just be like, no, But if I'm talking about
- 37:56Speaker 2: the beach or I'm hanging out.
- 37:57Speaker 3: With some of the chicks, like Barbie all right, that
- 37:59Speaker 3: sounds like and tick to him, And when I'm in
- 38:01Speaker 3: that mood, I can relate to that.
- 38:02Speaker 2: So I think being true to yourself is more relatable.
- 38:05Speaker 3: I think that's why, uh you know, that's why some
- 38:09Speaker 3: people like my records at one point and they don't
- 38:12Speaker 3: because maybe they can't relate to where I'm at.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I mean you said that, you said it really well.
- 38:16Speaker 3: It's like us artists are humans, so we're gonna grow,
- 38:19Speaker 3: and as we grow, we're gonna report.
- 38:21Speaker 2: How we feel and what we're feeling. So you might
- 38:23Speaker 2: not be in the same exact mindset that your favorite
- 38:26Speaker 2: artist is in when he puts out an album, but
- 38:28Speaker 2: give them time, you know what I'm.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Saying, Like play it like in a year when you're
- 38:31Speaker 3: sad or some share when you bring up with your man,
- 38:33Speaker 3: or like you know, or when you're on the beach,
- 38:35Speaker 3: in my case.
- 38:36Speaker 1: On the beach, on hey, on the beach. But I
- 38:39Speaker 1: think it's also like when you have a favorite artist
- 38:41Speaker 1: and you know they're talented, Like you know, okay, I
- 38:44Speaker 1: rocked with you for I know your talent, right, It's
- 38:47Speaker 1: like respecting that, Okay, I know that I'm gonna like it.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Either eventually you know, like I said, the life cycle
- 38:54Speaker 1: or what have you.
- 38:54Speaker 3: I love fans like that too, because I over the years,
- 38:57Speaker 3: like I see who my fans are, Like I you know,
- 39:00Speaker 3: of course there's something I don't see.
- 39:01Speaker 2: But the people who've been consistent, like been hitting me up, like.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Some of them, it's right with me, no matter what
- 39:08Speaker 3: pro I got. And I'm like, you know what I'm saying,
- 39:13Speaker 3: Like it makes you do feel good because you do
- 39:14Speaker 3: have those artists are those fans who are fans of
- 39:18Speaker 3: the person they get to the point and I think
- 39:21Speaker 3: that does happen through vulnerability. And I'm even trying to
- 39:24Speaker 3: get better at that with my social media and stuff
- 39:26Speaker 3: like that. And that's why I'm here doing this kind
- 39:27Speaker 3: of stuff. It's like, you know, the more people know you,
- 39:29Speaker 3: the more they can invest in the person. And yeah,
- 39:33Speaker 3: so yeah, I think that is a key ingredient, no
- 39:36Speaker 3: pun intended.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Yeah that was good. Now. I feel like being a
- 39:44Speaker 1: mixed person, I have a little bit of a race.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I have race I was called race issues, you know,
- 39:49Speaker 1: inter racial issues. You being black and being with your
- 39:54Speaker 1: background and putting out the music you do, do you
- 39:56Speaker 1: ever feel pressure or hear slack from in the black community.
- 40:01Speaker 2: It's a really good question. It's a really good question.
- 40:04Speaker 1: It's a real honest question. I was painful. It's hard
- 40:06Speaker 1: to ask him.
- 40:07Speaker 2: No, really good question. The answer is no. But I
- 40:12Speaker 2: don't get any flam slack from it. I only love.
- 40:14Speaker 3: But I was so insecure about it at first. My
- 40:17Speaker 3: first album I was I was like black music, I
- 40:20Speaker 3: hate this ship. Bro Min was like this kid talking
- 40:23Speaker 3: about this beach ship. I'm not like a rapper rapper,
- 40:25Speaker 3: like that's why when that's that's when like Wayne was
- 40:28Speaker 3: killing it and like you know, Drake just came out
- 40:30Speaker 3: and I'm like, what are they?
- 40:31Speaker 1: But they had the paral era that kind of helped.
- 40:36Speaker 2: But no, like when I.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Like now looking back on it, and like I meet
- 40:41Speaker 3: people now, like people the black mun like anyone who
- 40:44Speaker 3: does know my music and the black man, they say,
- 40:46Speaker 3: I love it, And I think there's a subculture of
- 40:49Speaker 3: black kids who grew up in rich towns who weren't
- 40:52Speaker 3: surrounded by black people, And like a lot of those
- 40:56Speaker 3: kids come to me, they'll be like, Yozy, I grew
- 40:59Speaker 3: up in a white down to a fucking love you dude,
- 41:02Speaker 3: like you like I like, and I'm like fuck, yeah,
- 41:05Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying.
- 41:06Speaker 1: But then I guess it goes back to living your truth.
- 41:08Speaker 2: You live in your truth.
- 41:09Speaker 3: But I was very nervous about myself coming out initially
- 41:13Speaker 3: on the black community side.
- 41:14Speaker 2: I was I wasn't sure like it was gonna be accepted.
- 41:15Speaker 2: It was be loved.
- 41:16Speaker 1: But it's kind of cool to hear you say that
- 41:18Speaker 1: you were thinking about it, because yeah, because yeah, even
- 41:23Speaker 1: when you watch the videos and you see all the
- 41:24Speaker 1: white girls, you'd be like, yeah, of course, trust me,
- 41:29Speaker 1: I get it. When jay Z puts out videos and
- 41:31Speaker 1: there's too many white girls and he shooes water and
- 41:34Speaker 1: all the black girls, I get a little mixed feelings.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Come on, man, No, I was a little sensitive too,
- 41:40Speaker 3: because I mean, like I've always had to kind of
- 41:43Speaker 3: like you know, growing up in Malibu. You know, my
- 41:49Speaker 3: experience mostly with the black community, like my own community,
- 41:53Speaker 3: is when I was like playing sports, because like that's
- 41:55Speaker 3: when I would separate and I'm like, okay, because I
- 41:57Speaker 3: was pretty good at basketball.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I was pretty good a shit, so I would I
- 42:00Speaker 2: was playing varshally and you know, going into ninth grade, so.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Those damn you were good.
- 42:04Speaker 3: So so those city kids that were on the team
- 42:07Speaker 3: in Malibu because we did have a little black section
- 42:09Speaker 3: in Malibu. Oh, but it was clown your boy like
- 42:12Speaker 3: but in a good way, like like they were like,
- 42:14Speaker 3: you know, I had never got a lineup before. And
- 42:17Speaker 3: then I went to middle school for the first time.
- 42:18Speaker 3: I got clowned a few times, and I found someone
- 42:20Speaker 3: to line me up.
- 42:20Speaker 2: I had no idea.
- 42:21Speaker 3: By the way, I don't have a lot of right now.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I'm still going back to my old school shit. I'm
- 42:24Speaker 3: a raggedy nigga, but I like it.
- 42:26Speaker 1: It's like, ready, you know what I'm saying.
- 42:28Speaker 2: But so so I was a little nervous.
- 42:31Speaker 3: But again that was all kind of like washed away
- 42:34Speaker 3: because as soon as I came out, like the people
- 42:36Speaker 3: who gravitated towards my music, they gravitated towards it.
- 42:40Speaker 2: And you know, it's not like a color thing. It's
- 42:41Speaker 2: more just like a feeling. And you could be.
- 42:43Speaker 3: The cool thing about my music is people tell me, like,
- 42:46Speaker 3: you know, they'll grow up in Detroit, grew up in
- 42:48Speaker 3: like New York, but like when they put my music,
- 42:50Speaker 3: they're like in a summer location at the beach.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how I feel about your music.
- 42:54Speaker 2: So you didn't hear my music before. So so yeah,
- 42:59Speaker 2: that's pretty.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Much say that. You just can't get away with saying that.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Shit.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Sorry, no heart fail there.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Not true.
- 43:07Speaker 1: All right gone, But yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was a great question. But I was nervous.
- 43:13Speaker 3: But I've gotten pretty much other about love. I mean, yeah,
- 43:16Speaker 3: I mean, some people hate, but some people hate no
- 43:18Speaker 3: matter what color they are, Like, my music isn't for everyone,
- 43:21Speaker 3: and I'm okay with that.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're an artist, you're a natural artist. Now,
- 43:26Speaker 1: at any point in your career, did you ever think
- 43:27Speaker 1: about quitting and doing something different?
- 43:32Speaker 2: Well, I mean yeah, I mean when my son was born,
- 43:36Speaker 2: I was like, I remember, I remember he was.
- 43:39Speaker 3: A baby and I left. He wasn't walking. I came
- 43:42Speaker 3: back from tour this long as and he was walking,
- 43:45Speaker 3: so I missed. I was missing things, and so I
- 43:48Speaker 3: kind of changed the way I toured for a while.
- 43:51Speaker 3: I changed everything, Like you know, I was no longer
- 43:54Speaker 3: doing long, long tours, just doing the spot dates.
- 43:56Speaker 2: So I could be home. And at that time I
- 43:58Speaker 2: was thinking like, hmmm, like I don't know, maybe I
- 44:02Speaker 2: could do something else. But I love doing this.
- 44:05Speaker 3: I love making music, I love entertaining and I love creating,
- 44:10Speaker 3: and I love the response I get from people after
- 44:13Speaker 3: like even a meal. It's like it's a different type
- 44:15Speaker 3: of art, but still I get to make something. I
- 44:17Speaker 3: get to create it, I get to see the reaction
- 44:19Speaker 3: of someone, but the food is gone afterwards, but still
- 44:23Speaker 3: just out like the feeling I love.
- 44:24Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I thought about different things. I thought about real estate,
- 44:28Speaker 3: I thought about uh but I don't know.
- 44:31Speaker 1: But what were those driving? So your son was a
- 44:33Speaker 1: pivotal and I like that you said that because you
- 44:35Speaker 1: don't hear men talk about that a lot. Your son
- 44:38Speaker 1: was an interesting pivot point. What are some of the
- 44:41Speaker 1: other things that make that make you think about other options?
- 44:46Speaker 1: Like what are the triggers?
- 44:47Speaker 3: Just other loves like music for me, I'm by I'm
- 44:54Speaker 3: by no means as as like good as I can be.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Like I don't think that I perfected music by anyway,
- 45:00Speaker 2: ship or form.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Still learning every time I try to write something, but
- 45:04Speaker 3: like when I'm on a movie set, it's just something
- 45:06Speaker 3: so new and I feel like I was a kid
- 45:08Speaker 3: of when I first was writing. So things like that,
- 45:11Speaker 3: like other interests like if I were able, if I
- 45:13Speaker 3: were able to book a show or like book like
- 45:15Speaker 3: a couple of movies and stuff like that.
- 45:17Speaker 2: I would put music on the backgrounder for sure.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Okay, and then do you do with imposter syndrome at all?
- 45:26Speaker 2: No?
- 45:27Speaker 1: Okay, that was it. That's it. That's all my grilling.
- 45:32Speaker 2: I feel like I understand you. I really like you.
- 45:36Speaker 3: I like you too than you like I told you
- 45:38Speaker 3: this is a beautiful platform. When I got the email
- 45:40Speaker 3: and I did some research and saw some things, I
- 45:42Speaker 3: was like.
- 45:43Speaker 2: This is so cool.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Feel like I'm gonna live up the best spaghetti.
- 45:46Speaker 2: No, I wish that I.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Could do it, but I broke me and I was like,
- 45:51Speaker 3: let me, let me, let me, let me dumb it down.
- 45:53Speaker 3: So sweet did this but even still now as a
- 45:55Speaker 3: quick thing like the stir fry, I still make.
- 45:58Speaker 2: But anyway, thank you.
- 46:00Speaker 1: So you know, when I'm lazy, I do the Trader
- 46:02Speaker 1: Joe's hack, And which is have you been a trader?
- 46:05Speaker 3: Does I shop the Trader Jose constantly? But I'm gonna
- 46:07Speaker 3: tell you be careful, tell me you're gonna.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Say no, tell me no, no, tell me tell me
- 46:12Speaker 1: what the heck is first.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Let's see, because I might not have to. I'm not trying.
- 46:16Speaker 2: I'm not trying to man explain something.
- 46:18Speaker 1: To the thing about Trader Joe's is like it's good,
- 46:21Speaker 1: it's affordable, but it's basically microwavable dinners with some with
- 46:25Speaker 1: like some options for fresh fruit, which their fresh fruit
- 46:28Speaker 1: isn't really to meet the best fresh fruit. But that's
- 46:31Speaker 1: what I was gonna say. So, like on a lazy week,
- 46:33Speaker 1: like say I've cooked too many like because I'll do
- 46:35Speaker 1: meal prep like it's like almost like the same food
- 46:36Speaker 1: for the whole week, and you want to go whatever. Yeah,
- 46:40Speaker 1: so like right now I've been doing I don't meal
- 46:43Speaker 1: prep with chicken breast because I think they're they're dry.
- 46:46Speaker 1: And I like chicken thighs even though it's more work
- 46:48Speaker 1: or whatever, and work because I always trimmed the fat
- 46:54Speaker 1: off of it, and I love the tenderness.
- 46:55Speaker 2: But the skin or the actual you get a skinless
- 46:57Speaker 2: and you trim the Yeah, why how do you do it?
- 47:02Speaker 2: No wrong way? I didn't eat that fat. Oh yeah, you.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Sound like a Jamaican, but you ain't.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Jamaican.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Was here, she'd been like, suck up that fat and
- 47:10Speaker 1: we eat all the bone marrow good stuff in there,
- 47:13Speaker 1: and like you pay for bone marrow. My mom would
- 47:17Speaker 1: be like, suck the ball marrow. My girl we go
- 47:19Speaker 1: to rustaurant, She's like, what did the bone ma room?
- 47:21Speaker 2: Like?
- 47:21Speaker 1: Fun out of.
- 47:24Speaker 2: We when we're broke out crazy.
- 47:31Speaker 1: I can imagine cauld You imagine like big growing up
- 47:34Speaker 1: and that's what you made when he was pooring all
- 47:36Speaker 1: this money on it.
- 47:38Speaker 2: My girl was sitting there like she.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Wasn't Jamaican swooping out the bone marrow. I was like, bitch,
- 47:41Speaker 1: I'm not spending a hundred dollars dispensive restaurants to My
- 47:45Speaker 1: mom used to beat me to eat that ship.
- 47:47Speaker 2: But the bag microwave, who it's all good. Just watch
- 47:50Speaker 2: off the sea oils because those those microwavable or heat.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Up meals you're talking about. Just be careful with the
- 47:55Speaker 3: sea oils. That's what seed oils. What's that canola oil?
- 47:59Speaker 3: Some flower oil? Anything that, like any kind of oils
- 48:04Speaker 3: like that, any.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Seed oils you mean on the back of the label.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Yeah, like you looking at it and be like canola
- 48:10Speaker 3: oil or sunflower why what what happens?
- 48:13Speaker 2: Well? Like these oils I have them right hair. But
- 48:16Speaker 2: you know they were first for cars, like you know forward.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Back they were using them for like engines and like
- 48:24Speaker 3: they ended up finding out you could put it in
- 48:25Speaker 3: food to preserve it that it's really bad.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Do you research?
- 48:28Speaker 1: Oh I was gonna say I didn't like it because
- 48:30Speaker 1: I was scared it had a lot of sodium in it.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that too, all that ship, all that pre
- 48:34Speaker 2: made stuff. Just make it yourself.
- 48:36Speaker 1: But I but I do. I'll go through weeks where
- 48:38Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I made the same ship. I know
- 48:42Speaker 1: because I usually just eat chicken fish, chicken.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Fish, chicken fish. I know that's a lot. You know,
- 48:50Speaker 2: I broke the oxtails fire.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Let me tell you I make some good, amazing short rip.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, my short rip. You know
- 48:58Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Stop playing with me.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Okay, anyways, Yes, I can do all of the above.
- 49:06Speaker 1: It's so funny because my mom's coming to town and
- 49:08Speaker 1: she was asking me, do I have a pressure cooker?
- 49:11Speaker 1: Do I own a pressure cooker? Do I own a
- 49:13Speaker 1: pressure cooker? Did I not come out of you? Of
- 49:16Speaker 1: course I want a pressure cooker. I have the Wolfgang
- 49:19Speaker 1: Puck pressure cooker. Shout outs to him. It is probably
- 49:22Speaker 1: one of the best pressure cookers.
- 49:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna lie, I've never used a pressure cooker don't
- 49:25Speaker 3: hate on me. I know I hear hate coming through
- 49:27Speaker 3: your brain. I don't even know what it does.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Okay, So when you eat really tender beef ox tail
- 49:36Speaker 1: short rip pressure, it's pressure cooker. You can't cook that ship.
- 49:39Speaker 1: And I mean if you I don't even know how
- 49:42Speaker 1: pressure cooker is, Like what takes six seven hours? Pressure
