Ep. 236. Brian Michael Bendis' best comics! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:12
My name is Megan with vigilante vibes and today I want to talk
• 0:15
about one of my favorite comic book writers, Brian Michael
• 0:18
Bendis. I've mentioned many times on
• 0:21
this channel that his writing sings to my soul, especially
• 0:25
when he's writing a grounded or gritty story.
• 0:28
And I want to name some of my favorite comics that he'd
• 0:31
written and some that actually got me into Marvel Comics from
• 0:34
the start. So one that I'll start with
• 0:36
absolutely got me into Marvel Comics.
• 0:39
It's alias the introduction of Jessica Jones.
• 0:42
This is the comic that put Jessica Jones at the top of many
• 0:45
lists for characters, and if you haven't read it, you absolutely
• 0:49
should. We learn so much about Jessica.
• 0:51
We learn about the Purple Man and how torturous he was for
• 0:54
her. We learn about her and Luke Cage
• 0:56
and we get to see when Jessica first tells Luke he's pregnant.
• 0:59
This is a comic run that started it all with Jessica Jones, and
• 1:02
honestly, it's what hooked me to Brian Michael Bendis's work.
• 1:06
The next one is Daredevil, and if you know anything about me,
• 1:11
you know that I am the biggest Daredevil fan you'll ever meet.
• 1:14
So his run of Daredevil, the story is just incredible.
• 1:19
Every story arc is a masterpiece.
• 1:20
Bendis took Daredevil places he had never been or explored while
• 1:24
staying true to the character and to Frank Miller's
• 1:26
revolutionary run. There are a lot of great St.
• 1:30
level stories in here with fantastic characters who you can
• 1:33
cherish for a lifetime. For me, this run on Daredevil is
• 1:39
absolutely top of the pile. If I'm spending money on it, I'm
• 1:42
buying. I would direct you to this one.
• 1:45
You will not be disappointed in the story.
• 1:47
It is some of Bendis's best work and it is what makes him one of
• 1:50
my favorite writers, even among Miller and Brubaker's run.
• 1:55
Also easily some among their best too.
• 1:58
It shines very very brightly. It is character defining for
• 2:02
every major Daredevil character in a really good way.
• 2:06
So highly recommended. Alias and Daredevil are easily
• 2:11
my top favorites for Brian Michael Bendis Ultimate Spider
• 2:16
Man. It's a modernized take on Spider
• 2:18
Man's early days. There are some liberties being
• 2:20
taken in this alternative universe from the traditional
• 2:24
Canon, but it is still seen as some of the best Spider Man
• 2:27
comics of all time. Something to keep in mind if
• 2:31
you're thinking of jumping in. There are many very
• 2:34
understandable reasons why people may not want to get
• 2:37
involved or get or they get nervous when jumping into Marvel
• 2:40
Comics. But one reason that I hear a lot
• 2:44
are the people don't know where to start reading and that people
• 2:47
are afraid of missing out. Because even if you start at
• 2:50
some, you know, issue #1 you still have decades of stories
• 2:54
you may not know about or may confuse you.
• 2:57
Ultimate Spider Man has none of that.
• 2:59
It has an issue, one that actually is a first issue.
• 3:03
And since it's also the beginning of what was the new
• 3:06
Ultimate Universe, you won't really be missing out on lore
• 3:10
because there is none. With that being said, it
• 3:12
absolutely is worth the read and any Spider Man fan can find
• 3:15
something to love in it. The next one, House of MI know
• 3:20
there is some disagreement with the quality of House of M mostly
• 3:23
because of the lore of the Scarlet Witch being ignored to
• 3:26
make the story happen, but I loved it.
• 3:29
House of Them is an event that I think every Marvel fan should
• 3:32
read at least once. I'm a huge fan of it and I've
• 3:34
read it quite a few times and honestly it always holds up for
• 3:38
me. It's when The Avengers and the
• 3:40
X-Men come together to fight their ultimate enemy Wanda
• 3:42
Maximoff AKA the Scarlet Witch. If you do check it out, make
• 3:45
sure you read all the TIE insurance too so you don't miss
• 3:47
anything. My next one is Ironheart, the
• 3:51
saga of RiRi Williams. I will always fight for respect
• 3:55
on Riri's name and with Bendis writing her there really is no
• 3:59
way for anyone to prove otherwise to me with the amount
• 4:02
of toxicity that's attached to RiRi Williams.
• 4:04
Mostly thanks to grifters on the Internet who use rage bait and
• 4:07
negativity for clicks. Y'all know who you are.
• 4:10
I happen to like Bendis's job he did with her, and I think more
• 4:14
people should check out her comics if interested.
• 4:17
Also, be sure to check out Evelle Ewing's work with her
• 4:20
too. So these are my favorites of
• 4:23
Brian Michael Mendis, but this list does not stop there.
• 4:26
You can also check out New Avengers, Avengers Versus,
• 4:29
X-Men, The Pulse, The Defenders, Hawkeye, Dark Avengers, Secret
• 4:34
Invasion, the list goes on and on.
• 4:36
And Brian, Michael Mendis has written some of the most iconic
• 4:39
stories that we all still read in Marvel Comics today.
• 4:42
And it doesn't even stop at Marvel Comics because he's
• 4:44
really all across the board. So those are my favorite from by
• 4:48
Michael Bendis. Make sure you let me know in the
• 4:50
comments which ones your favorite are.
• 4:52
And if you have any recommendations, I'd love to
• 4:54
check them out. So please let me know and be
• 4:57
sure to like and subscribe so you don't miss anything else I
• 4:59
put out because I put out a whole bunch of stuff.
• 5:02
So with that being said, have a marvelous day.
