- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. We are entering the final
- 0:28Speaker 1: few days before training camps.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Begin in the NFL. As you're listening to this.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The Jets actually start camp this week as they have
- 0:35Speaker 1: to get things going with the Hall of Fame game
- 0:39Speaker 1: up ahead. They also got the news that they were
- 0:40Speaker 1: on hard knocks this year, and I think all people
- 0:43Speaker 1: are excited about it. The NFL is excited about it,
- 0:45Speaker 1: NFL Films is excited about it. I'm excited about it.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I don't get the feeling the Jets are so excited
- 0:50Speaker 1: about it. And Aaron Rodgers made as much clear when
- 0:54Speaker 1: he took to the cameras when they were interviewing him
- 0:57Speaker 1: at the golf tournament and basically said, the league shoved
- 0:59Speaker 1: it down their throats.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Guess what they did.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what we get from it. Sala
- 1:04Speaker 1: is an interesting character in this one, one for the
- 1:06Speaker 1: camera's not looking to make it about him, and yet
- 1:09Speaker 1: he has.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Such a cool life, such a cool, interesting.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Family life, and one of the partons I like about
- 1:14Speaker 1: hard knocks is they take us into the people's personal
- 1:17Speaker 1: lives and goes into the homes. Robert Sala has seven
- 1:20Speaker 1: kids under the age of thirteen. He's an NFL head coach.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He's got all this expectations and all of I guess
- 1:28Speaker 1: this pressure this year touse. I would like to think
- 1:31Speaker 1: Salah is going to be one of the more interesting characters.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I know Rogers, it's going to be fascinating.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Question is Aaron as we think about that, does Rogers
- 1:39Speaker 1: let them in for free?
- 1:40Speaker 2: This is the guy, Aaron Rodgers who has ip to
- 1:43Speaker 2: his name that.
- 1:44Speaker 1: He could sell his own documentary following his own career
- 1:46Speaker 1: for millions of dollars. Is he going to be open
- 1:49Speaker 1: with the cameras? Is he going to be saying, hey,
- 1:50Speaker 1: let's take a day through my existence here.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I don't see it.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I don't know if Rogers is going to be so welcoming,
- 1:56Speaker 1: especially after we saw the quote that he gave at
- 1:59Speaker 1: the golf tournament this weekend.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I also wonder like, does Rogers have the Lebron set
- 2:03Speaker 3: up where Lebron has had people following him at all
- 2:06Speaker 3: times like filming the Inevitable documentary? Does Rogers also have
- 2:10Speaker 3: that you might, yeah, So I don't know. I also
- 2:13Speaker 3: feel like, what are you going to get like footage
- 2:16Speaker 3: of Rogers going on McAfee show once a week, Like,
- 2:19Speaker 3: I don't know if that's going to make the most
- 2:20Speaker 3: enticing Hard Knocks footage.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I'd like to see where Rogers lives.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I think that would be interesting just from the lifestyles
- 2:26Speaker 1: of the rich and famous aspect of it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'd like to see.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Rogers take a day trip to New York City. I
- 2:30Speaker 1: would love to be along on the ride on that thing.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And you know, as much as he might be a
- 2:35Speaker 1: polarizing figure with his thoughts on whatever it was during
- 2:39Speaker 1: the pandemic or his way his departure with the Packers went,
- 2:43Speaker 1: Rogers smart guy. He's got a pretty quick humor. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: think more Rogers the better. I think if we get
- 2:50Speaker 1: on Hard Knocks and suddenly we're doing, you know, forty
- 2:53Speaker 1: minutes on the third string corner and we're doing what's
- 2:57Speaker 1: working out in the offensive line room, you're not getting
- 2:59Speaker 1: what you really signed up for when you said, Jets,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you must do this. So Aaron Rodgers, I would hope,
- 3:05Speaker 1: would be a part of it. I'm just not sure
- 3:06Speaker 1: how much he's going to give. Did you get a chance,
- 3:09Speaker 1: Aaron to watch The Quarterback on Netflix yet? The new
- 3:13Speaker 1: series that has been produced by Omaha as well as
- 3:17Speaker 1: NFL Films and follows around the season of Patrick Mahomes
- 3:21Speaker 1: Marcus Mariota. And after a week of feedback from this thing,
- 3:25Speaker 1: everybody's darling Kirk Cousins.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yes, I am. I think I'm five episodes in so far.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I'm trying to slow it.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I don't want to binge the whole thing because this
- 3:34Speaker 3: is kind of like our content until you know, hard
- 3:39Speaker 3: Knocks comes up. So I've been I've been slowly enjoying it,
- 3:43Speaker 3: and I really like it so far.
- 3:45Speaker 1: All right, let me give you a couple of takeaways
- 3:47Speaker 1: that I've had, and I want to hear whatever instant
- 3:50Speaker 1: reactions you might have, because I haven't really talked about
- 3:52Speaker 1: this with anybody except my wife, who has been watching
- 3:54Speaker 1: it sporadically with me. One is Cousins the most likable, endearing,
- 4:01Speaker 1: most just like I want to hug him and be
- 4:02Speaker 1: his best friend.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Guy in the entire NFL. First of all, the guy
- 4:05Speaker 2: takes an absolute beat.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You never hear him complain his cerebral nature to playing
- 4:10Speaker 1: quarterback with the writing down every different plan. I think
- 4:14Speaker 1: it was episode four, episode three where they showed him
- 4:16Speaker 1: wearing that headset, which yep, what.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Is that called brain control? What was that then?
- 4:21Speaker 3: I don't remember, but like he's watching something and it
- 4:25Speaker 3: goes dark if he's not paying enough attention.
- 4:27Speaker 1: It was a sports century on Larry Bird that he
- 4:30Speaker 1: was watching on his iPhone, and if he's not paying
- 4:33Speaker 1: attention and if his mind drifts, the lighting dims. So
- 4:37Speaker 1: he just I've never heard of it. That's ai next level.
- 4:41Speaker 1: They're running our world stuff, and yet Cousins like, I've
- 4:43Speaker 1: been doing this for ten years. It's what I do.
- 4:45Speaker 2: He writes out every single play. That's my first thing. Cousins.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Your thoughts on Cousins?
- 4:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I was talking to my girlfriend this weekend about
- 4:53Speaker 3: it and she was asking, like what takeaways I had
- 4:56Speaker 3: so far? And I was like, I like Cousins a
- 4:59Speaker 3: lot more than I expected. He's also so much more
- 5:01Speaker 3: calm and soft spoken. Like the things I know from
- 5:04Speaker 3: Cousins are you like that the chains on the airplane
- 5:08Speaker 3: and they go over that. But like he is, he's
- 5:11Speaker 3: a nice dude, and like he's he's kind of silly,
- 5:14Speaker 3: like he's wearing the clothes his wife puts out for
- 5:17Speaker 3: him that morning, and.
- 5:18Speaker 4: You know, but yeah he does.
- 5:21Speaker 3: He takes such a beating it's I visibly winced when
- 5:24Speaker 3: he had his chiropractor there, Like I always think the
- 5:27Speaker 3: factors are scary, but like the next stuff, Oh my god,
- 5:31Speaker 3: I know there's.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A little moment, and I'll break the fourth wall here.
- 5:35Speaker 1: There's a little moment where they beat the Bills in
- 5:38Speaker 1: this dramatic game and he's.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Walking off the field.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Yes, I remember, I.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Know, I'm sorry your Bill's fin and he looks up
- 5:44Speaker 1: into the crowd and as everyone's in the screen, hey,
- 5:47Speaker 1: cool starter jacket man, Like he noticed a starter jacket.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So I have cousins number in my phone from.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Like the deep annals of meeting him back probably when
- 5:56Speaker 1: he was with Washington. So I just sent him a
- 5:58Speaker 1: text and not expecting a response, being like, best moment
- 6:01Speaker 1: of the series is when you shout out the guy
- 6:02Speaker 1: with the starter jacket and he wrote back to me
- 6:04Speaker 1: and he's like, huge starter jacket.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Anyone who grew up in our era love starter jackets.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I had one.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I had to call it out. I'm like, yes, that's
- 6:12Speaker 2: my first takeaway.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Second takeaway, I think Patrick Mahomes's wife, Brittany gets a
- 6:18Speaker 1: bad rap. Everyone seems to think she's annoying when you
- 6:20Speaker 1: hear her screaming or shit her. I think she comes
- 6:23Speaker 1: across incredibly well on this thing, and I feel like
- 6:26Speaker 1: she's a big reason for Patrick Mahomes's success, how committed
- 6:29Speaker 1: she is to this lifestyle, but also their relationship as
- 6:32Speaker 1: a whole, how strong it is.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It doesn't help that the show opens with her being like, Patrick,
- 6:38Speaker 3: we need to take a photo here, Patrick, let's take
- 6:40Speaker 3: a photo over here, and he's like, I hate photos,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and she's like one more over here, over here, and
- 6:45Speaker 3: like not a great start for her. They did her
- 6:48Speaker 3: a little dirty with that. But yeah, I didn't realize
- 6:52Speaker 3: that she was a part owner of a soccer team, Like, yeah, she's.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I played college soccer.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yes, I'm impressed with her. I do like Mariota's wife more.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I think I liked her, Like I don't know if
- 7:04Speaker 3: you've gotten to this episode where she's watching I think
- 7:07Speaker 3: it's the Falcons forty nine ers game and she's like, oh.
- 7:11Speaker 4: It's getting spicy in me. She's like swimming in the stands.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I loved that.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I like she also is studying the playbook and
- 7:18Speaker 1: she knows it better than the Marcus does. She's literally
- 7:21Speaker 1: reading back plays like double, why is it dragon?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm like what that was amazing.
- 7:25Speaker 3: One of my favorite moments with plays is when Mahomes
- 7:29Speaker 3: sits down and he's watching the tape and he takes
- 7:32Speaker 3: you through the entire thing and he's like, you can
- 7:35Speaker 3: see because he's lined up a little closer here, and
- 7:38Speaker 3: when we go in motion, it means they're in a
- 7:40Speaker 3: zone read and so that means I can throw deep
- 7:44Speaker 3: to the left, or I can throw the cross or
- 7:46Speaker 3: on the left like that was one of my favorites too,
- 7:48Speaker 3: him breaking down that playbook like that.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I find it really interesting because I work on a
- 7:52Speaker 1: daily show. Obviously, I work on the Fox Sunday Show.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I grew up and you always had edge NFL matchup
- 7:59Speaker 1: around and there's all these sites.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Pfff.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I didn't I didn't play football at a high level.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I didn't coach at a high level. So a lot
- 8:05Speaker 1: of that X is and oh stuff. And they call
- 8:07Speaker 1: it lebarros in TV talk where the guy goes to
- 8:10Speaker 1: the board and Danie Rolotsky will chart it out and
- 8:12Speaker 1: Brian Boldinger will say, here's what happens.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Here's how it broke open. It's like almost like calculus.
- 8:17Speaker 1: To me, or it's speaking you know, a different language
- 8:20Speaker 1: where I just kind of tune out and I'm like,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I get it. He gets open and I know it's
- 8:24Speaker 1: for everyone else for some reason.
- 8:25Speaker 2: When Mahomes is.
- 8:26Speaker 1: The one taking us through it, and when the player
- 8:29Speaker 1: who actually did it takes us through it, it's much
- 8:32Speaker 1: easier to follow.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And it's really cool. It's like watching chess in a way.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 3: And he's like pointing out, look at this one person
- 8:39Speaker 3: on this play, and this is why this is happening.
- 8:42Speaker 3: It's not like I'm looking at the entire formation and
- 8:45Speaker 3: trying to see everyone moving. It's just him saying, here's
- 8:48Speaker 3: one guy. I'm just focused on this and this is
- 8:50Speaker 3: the thing to look at. And this is how I
- 8:52Speaker 3: know what defense are and kind of thing.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I have two more takeaways.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Third one Mahomes uncensored. You know I'm that dude and
- 9:01Speaker 1: mother f this it's all.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I don't know if it's almost like he's an actor
- 9:06Speaker 2: playing what.
- 9:07Speaker 1: He thinks like a tough guy man, yet it's authentic.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I guess, I don't know. He says warm, cuddly, like
- 9:13Speaker 2: sweetheart of a kid.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And then he's out there cursing off Max Crosby and
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, there's a different side of him.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I also love his he he kind of does
- 9:21Speaker 3: the Andrew Luck thing too, right.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yep, good play, good play man.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Always compliment to Crosby.
- 9:28Speaker 1: But Nick Bosa, he was like, man, you're great. After
- 9:31Speaker 1: if you're and He's like, you're outside the box, but
- 9:34Speaker 1: you're great. Man.
- 9:36Speaker 2: That was awesome. And my last takeaway is an open question.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And this sounds like if we have Good Morning Football
- 9:43Speaker 1: right now, I would one hundred percent say this would
- 9:46Speaker 1: be our a block to start off the show.
- 9:48Speaker 2: The three quarterbacks you would want heading into twenty twenty three.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Let me give you my three first, and then you
- 9:55Speaker 2: can marinate. And if you're a listener, and you're a
- 9:58Speaker 2: regular listener this podcast, tweet us, tweet me.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I'm outside right now. I got planes flying over me.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Here's what I'm thinking. I want Rogers.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I want this Jets here, whether it's great or whether
- 10:12Speaker 1: it's terrible, I want Rogers. I feel like this is
- 10:15Speaker 1: going to be an interesting season for him and for
- 10:17Speaker 1: the New York Jets and for the New York media market.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I'd love to see Rogers because they have a hard schedule,
- 10:22Speaker 1: they have the hard knocks. They also have the extra
- 10:24Speaker 1: week which is in Canton, Ohio, so they're there early,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and then you just have this just this amazing thing.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Okay, so that's Rogers.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield third stab at this thing, kind of fighting
- 10:35Speaker 1: for his career. Baker has things to say. I think
- 10:38Speaker 1: he is a great character in this league. I don't
- 10:41Speaker 1: want him to be like relegated to a journeyman or
- 10:44Speaker 1: a backup moving forward, like this is his last fight,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and I think Baker has a lot to say.
- 10:49Speaker 2: The last one is a.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Guy that I've only met once and it was at
- 10:54Speaker 1: the combine and I was blown away by him, and
- 10:57Speaker 1: then he was taken way before where everyone had him
- 10:59Speaker 1: going in February. Once the draft came into April, I
- 11:03Speaker 1: think the Anthony Richardson thing in Indianapolis would be really
- 11:05Speaker 1: cool because and.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Fantasy owners do what you will with us. What I
- 11:10Speaker 2: hear at Indianapolis is like this guy is the super freak.
- 11:14Speaker 1: This is Yannis coming to the NFL at quarterback six
- 11:18Speaker 1: foot six doors. The ball a country mile can apparently
- 11:22Speaker 1: run like he's you know, Jalen Hurts or DeShawn Watson
- 11:25Speaker 1: in his prime, Like I'm here for it. So the
- 11:27Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson experience, he's going to be twenty, I think
- 11:30Speaker 1: when the season starts, and I'm not taking out of
- 11:33Speaker 1: the possibility that he's starting week one, so I'm fascinating
- 11:36Speaker 1: what he's got.
- 11:36Speaker 2: So those are my three, three very different situations.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Rogers on this ride, Baker kind of fighting for his
- 11:41Speaker 1: career and still being Baker Mayfield that you know, the
- 11:44Speaker 1: same son of a gun that he's always been.
- 11:45Speaker 2: And then Anthony Richardson, let's get to know this kid.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Who are your three?
- 11:49Speaker 3: So I think I don't I don't want to copy
- 11:51Speaker 3: what they currently have in terms of the breakdown of
- 11:53Speaker 3: the three guys, but I think he wants someone who's
- 11:56Speaker 3: like a competitor and one of the top young guys,
- 12:00Speaker 3: like a Mahomes. So I feel like a Burrow or
- 12:03Speaker 3: maybe a Trevor Lawrence would be really interesting. I also
- 12:06Speaker 3: feel like we don't get a ton of Trevor Lawrence
- 12:10Speaker 3: stuff right now, and I think he would be really
- 12:12Speaker 3: interesting to see, So he would probably one of those
- 12:15Speaker 3: two would.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Be my top guy.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I want someone who Sorry Mariota, but someone who's also
- 12:23Speaker 3: in that like competing for their job might lose it.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I like Baker, but we've seen Baker so much. You know,
- 12:32Speaker 3: he's he's got enough commercials and everything. So I kind
- 12:35Speaker 3: of want Tannehill, especially like why they've got Levis behind him.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I think you know There'shill.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I had Tannehill on Hard Knocks with the Dolphins ten
- 12:46Speaker 2: years ago.
- 12:47Speaker 4: We've gone ten years ago.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Let's go Tannehill.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Fine, so you get Tannehill, and that also means we
- 12:52Speaker 3: get vable because some of them have more coach involvement
- 12:55Speaker 3: than others.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yes, all right, who's your third?
- 12:59Speaker 3: And then the third I think I would want. I
- 13:04Speaker 3: think I want Daniel Jones.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Oh god, you just picked Trevor Lawrence, Ryan, Tannehill, and
- 13:09Speaker 1: Daniel Jones as the three personalities you want to follow
- 13:13Speaker 1: for this season.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, maybe not Daniel Jones.
- 13:16Speaker 1: There I have not gotten a single quote out of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the last two in their entire careers, and in the
- 13:20Speaker 1: first got well, Tannehill maybe, but no.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Come on, Daniel Jones. Lamar, Yes, now we're talking. Give
- 13:27Speaker 2: me Lamar. I would love to follow Lamar for a year.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And this is whatever situation. He's in in Baltimore. Sorry
- 13:32Speaker 1: to shame Daniel Jones there.
- 13:34Speaker 3: No, I was trying to think of someone who just
- 13:36Speaker 3: signed a contract, and Lamar is the obvious one.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I don't know why what with Daniel Jones. I'm to
- 13:41Speaker 4: New York, I'm in midtown.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So yeah, I just bullied you into picking Lamar.
- 13:45Speaker 4: If you want to go Daniel Jones, believe me into
- 13:47Speaker 4: a better pick I think. So that's next one.
- 13:49Speaker 1: All right, today's podcast guest. Really excited for this one.
- 13:53Speaker 1: We're about to hop on with him. The offensive coordinator
- 13:57Speaker 1: of the Jacksonville Jaguars. You mentioned Trevor Lawrence. Just now,
- 14:00Speaker 1: here's a guy who was in Trevor Lawrence's ear all
- 14:03Speaker 1: last year as he took that giantly forward and gosh,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what he has to say. This
- 14:08Speaker 1: is Press Taylor o C of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So excited for our guest this week.
- 14:19Speaker 1: He is the offensive coordinator of one of the best
- 14:22Speaker 1: young offenses in the league, and he's got a really
- 14:24Speaker 1: cool career and he's a great all around coach in
- 14:26Speaker 1: the NFL. With no further ado, Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Welcome to the season with Peter Schriker.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Thanks man, thanks for having me.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Great to have you. You and I have got to know
- 14:38Speaker 1: each other over the years, but I first became aware
- 14:41Speaker 1: of your name post Super Bowl and I'm gonna go why.
- 14:46Speaker 1: And it wasn't because of your amazing relationship with Nick
- 14:49Speaker 1: Foles or Carson Wentz. When I was doing a deep
- 14:52Speaker 1: dive post Super Bowl, like the days after, they were
- 14:55Speaker 1: like the Philly Special, it starts with Press Taylor. Now,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I know you deflect that that kind of you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: it's a team at for the Philly Special. Let's start
- 15:04Speaker 1: off right there before we go back any further. We
- 15:06Speaker 1: bring it up to speed. Take us through Press Taylor's
- 15:10Speaker 1: relationship to the Philly Special, one of the biggest play
- 15:12Speaker 1: in Super Bowl history.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Yeah. So, I was the assistant quarterbacks coach in Philly
- 15:17Speaker 5: that season and one of my jobs was just helping
- 15:20Speaker 5: Frank Reich, you know, game plan given ideas. Obviously that
- 15:23Speaker 5: season we lost our starting quarterback late in the year.
- 15:26Speaker 5: We're rolling with Nick, you know, at the time of
- 15:29Speaker 5: backup going into the playoff run, Frank Wright comes to
- 15:31Speaker 5: my office and just to say, you know, we're probably
- 15:34Speaker 5: gonna need something through this playoff run. Some gadgets, give me,
- 15:37Speaker 5: give me your best ideas well. One of my things
- 15:39Speaker 5: all season long is basically a glorified quality control. Being
- 15:42Speaker 5: an assistant position coach was to watch everything around the
- 15:45Speaker 5: league all the time. I'm tagging film. I'm tagging cutups
- 15:49Speaker 5: or coverages or whatever it may be. So I see
- 15:51Speaker 5: a lot of film and I'd spend money.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Random, random Browns Ravens game. You're watching it just because
- 15:56Speaker 1: we might say something.
- 15:57Speaker 5: I'm watching every plus twenty pass attempt that week. Every
- 16:01Speaker 5: Monday night. I'd kind of take two hours and just
- 16:03Speaker 5: watch across the league, different things, explosive plays, red zone passes.
- 16:07Speaker 5: That's kind of where I got to that one, was
- 16:09Speaker 5: just watching red zone passes and seeing that, and it
- 16:12Speaker 5: was like a meaningless twenty. It would have been in
- 16:15Speaker 5: the twenty sixteen season, like Week seventeen game, I think
- 16:18Speaker 5: the Bears are.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Out of it playing I think it was the Vikings.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's Matt Barkley playing quarterback. Alshan's on the field.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Who's on our team at that time? I tagged it.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I had five or six other versions of it from
- 16:29Speaker 5: different teams. We just happened to pick. So I have
- 16:31Speaker 5: a cutup of you know, ten examples of this thing
- 16:34Speaker 5: right here. Whatever we're going to call it at the time.
- 16:36Speaker 1: The same play, very similar.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Maybe drawn a little differently, you know, maybe not the
- 16:40Speaker 5: quarterback fake in or whatever it may be. Even college versions,
- 16:44Speaker 5: we're college rules are different. You can put your hands
- 16:46Speaker 5: on the center, toss the ball to running back and
- 16:48Speaker 5: still throw it. In the pros, there's nuances to the
- 16:50Speaker 5: rules you can't do. So we were kind of massaging
- 16:52Speaker 5: that as we went, but present these ideas to Frank.
- 16:55Speaker 5: He's like, I like that one. Let's do that one
- 16:57Speaker 5: kind of fits some schemes. We run some different presentation
- 17:00Speaker 5: down that area. So we kind of take it. That's
- 17:03Speaker 5: before the playoff run. We have the buy where the
- 17:05Speaker 5: first round seat we get the buy. So we just
- 17:07Speaker 5: start working it, you know, once or twice a week,
- 17:10Speaker 5: working our way through it. Carry it through that bye week,
- 17:13Speaker 5: carry it through the Falcons game, carry it through the
- 17:15Speaker 5: Vikings game. We have to convince Doug not to call
- 17:17Speaker 5: it in the Vikings game. In the fourth quarter.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Let's talk about this. I love this right here. So dogs,
- 17:22Speaker 1: so we're rolling, You're up thirty points, and let's do
- 17:25Speaker 1: the play.
- 17:25Speaker 5: We'd hit a flea flicker, we'd hit all this stuff.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Everything's very sim The crowd's going wild, like he's just
- 17:32Speaker 5: gonna feed the momentum.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Right here, empty the bag, if you will, exactly.
- 17:36Speaker 5: And so we're all like, he's I'm gonna go Philly,
- 17:38Speaker 5: especially guys. Good No, no, no, no, everybody, Mike, grow Johnny.
- 17:42Speaker 5: We're all screaming in the headset. No no, no, no no,
- 17:44Speaker 5: We're just save it, save it safe. So then we
- 17:46Speaker 5: go into we're playing New England and the super Bowl
- 17:49Speaker 5: and we're practicing. We run. We practice in Philly for
- 17:52Speaker 5: the first week. Okay, so we're running all our everything,
- 17:55Speaker 5: we got all our trick plays, everything. We go practice
- 17:58Speaker 5: at the University of Minnesota in the super Bowl and
- 18:02Speaker 5: we're in a dome, but we don't practice it ever.
- 18:04Speaker 5: We're like, we don't we don't know what's we don't
- 18:06Speaker 5: know who's around here, who these people are, whatever it
- 18:08Speaker 5: may be, We're not gonna run.
- 18:09Speaker 1: There's a hystory of practices, maybe a super Bowl keep
- 18:12Speaker 1: it simple.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Sure, So the only time we rep it the week
- 18:16Speaker 5: of the Super Bowl is and walk throughs in a
- 18:18Speaker 5: hotel ballroom where it's just us, just our offensive unit
- 18:21Speaker 5: in the hotel ball and we walked through it a
- 18:23Speaker 5: handful of times, but we've been repping it for almost
- 18:25Speaker 5: a month now, so we kind of worked out some
- 18:27Speaker 5: kinks and figured it out, and then you know, we
- 18:29Speaker 5: don't know if he's going to call it. You always
- 18:31Speaker 5: have these trick plays. Sometimes you carry a trick play
- 18:33Speaker 5: the whole year and it never gets called. It's not
- 18:35Speaker 5: the right time, nobody's feeling it, whatever. And then Nick
- 18:38Speaker 5: kind of spurred the whole thing. You know, Nick comes off,
- 18:40Speaker 5: We take a time out on fourth and one Nick
- 18:42Speaker 5: comes off that you want Philly. He called it Philly, Philly, Philly, Philly.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Doug you know, looks him in the eye and saw
- 18:48Speaker 5: some convictions. Yeah, let's do it. So that's kind of
- 18:50Speaker 5: how it all spurred about. But yeah, I mean it's
- 18:53Speaker 5: a copycat league, like you know, we're all stealing plays
- 18:55Speaker 5: that we see work and fit our system and then
- 18:57Speaker 5: turn it into our own.
- 18:58Speaker 1: It's funny because I remember McVeigh ran it in a
- 19:00Speaker 1: playoff game, ran a trick play and it was for
- 19:03Speaker 1: a two point conversion against the Packers, and afterwards, I
- 19:06Speaker 1: think I said, or maybe it's a regular season game.
- 19:08Speaker 1: And I sid to Sean, I'm like, that was amazing.
- 19:09Speaker 1: How'd you draw that up? He's like, oh no, the
- 19:10Speaker 1: Dolphins right out last week Salvin Akhmed ran it like
- 19:12Speaker 1: it was the same exact play, Like we just took
- 19:13Speaker 1: it from when we really liked that they did.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Was they then Ben Johnson beats the Packers on it
- 19:20Speaker 5: last year?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yes he did.
- 19:21Speaker 5: We ran out to Golden Tate a couple of years
- 19:23Speaker 5: back too, exactly.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So it's like you see it, You're like, what is
- 19:25Speaker 1: that play? And it's like, no, we just stole from
- 19:27Speaker 1: someone else. And there's no shame in that, right.
- 19:29Speaker 5: None at all none. What sir, you're trying to move
- 19:31Speaker 5: the ball.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, all right. Your story for the listeners come from, obviously,
- 19:37Speaker 1: I would say, a football family. Your pops was a coach.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Your older brother is Zach Taylor who's the head coach
- 19:42Speaker 1: of Cincinnati Bengals. But your path is not as maybe
- 19:45Speaker 1: direct as as Zachxpert was. Hey college superstar into coaching,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and to take the path, you were a high school
- 19:53Speaker 1: player going in You went to played college, but not
- 19:55Speaker 1: major division one, am I correct?
- 19:57Speaker 5: No, I originally went to junior college out of high school.
- 20:00Speaker 5: So for two gimes. When I'm a six foot tall quarterback,
- 20:02Speaker 5: I threw for two thousand yards in high school. You know,
- 20:05Speaker 5: we had a really good pl but mostly skilled players,
- 20:08Speaker 5: but we were old school under center all that. So
- 20:10Speaker 5: one highly recruited guy. I had some D two one
- 20:13Speaker 5: double A offers at the time, but wanted to play
- 20:15Speaker 5: D one football. So I went to junior college. And
- 20:17Speaker 5: my brother had gone to junior college the same one actually.
- 20:20Speaker 1: But I didn't know that.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Yeah, so he had, but he had bounced back there.
- 20:23Speaker 5: He went to Wake Forest out of high school, went
- 20:26Speaker 5: to Butler, had a lot of success, went on to Nebraska.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I had a great career there. So we were familiar
- 20:31Speaker 5: with the staff at Butler, so they recruited me. I
- 20:33Speaker 5: wanted to play D one, so I wanted to, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 5: take that opportunity to go and develop a little more.
- 20:38Speaker 5: So went there, had two great years playing there, really
- 20:41Speaker 5: enjoyed it, and then went on to Marshall University and played.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Two years years. Not out of high school though, yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Yeah, no, not out of high school. So kind of
- 20:48Speaker 5: developed into that and had had a good experience doing that.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Spent two years at Marshall University.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Did you play quarterback at Marshall?
- 20:54Speaker 5: I did, Yeah, I was really a backup.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Who are you behind? Were you like left Witch years
- 20:58Speaker 1: or was it Pennington or after?
- 21:00Speaker 5: No, I was younger than those guys. Yeah, younger than
- 21:02Speaker 5: those guys.
- 21:03Speaker 1: So you go to Marshall and then careers over in
- 21:06Speaker 1: Then what.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I think I knew early on, I was going to
- 21:09Speaker 5: coach just kind of my dad was my dad coach.
- 21:11Speaker 5: My brother was kind of getting into coaching at that
- 21:13Speaker 5: point coming out, and so knew I was going to coach.
- 21:17Speaker 5: My brother was at Texa and at the time he
- 21:19Speaker 5: was like, hey, you can be a volunteer assistant here,
- 21:21Speaker 5: you know you could. I was trying to get into
- 21:23Speaker 5: Oklahoma at the time, that's home for us. And then
- 21:26Speaker 5: my brother knew some people on staff at Tulsa, and
- 21:29Speaker 5: I knew the head coach I had. My dad grew
- 21:31Speaker 5: up with the head coach at the time, Bill Blank
- 21:33Speaker 5: and Chip. So I just sent an email saying, Hey,
- 21:36Speaker 5: I'd love to get on staff here. I'll wash cars,
- 21:39Speaker 5: I'll find a place. I don't need anything, just let
- 21:42Speaker 5: me sit in your meeting room. And so he just
- 21:44Speaker 5: sent I spent in this long email. He just responds, Hey,
- 21:47Speaker 5: come see me. So next morning, jump in my car.
- 21:50Speaker 5: I'm sitting in front of his office at six o'clock.
- 21:52Speaker 5: His secretaryis, do you have an appointment? And said no,
- 21:54Speaker 5: he just said to come see him. I'm here. So
- 21:56Speaker 5: I just sat there and then we end up talking.
- 21:58Speaker 5: He's yeah, I got a roll for you, and you
- 22:00Speaker 5: come to this. I stay with in a basement at
- 22:02Speaker 5: some family friends And.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Is that right? So you're living in the basement of
- 22:05Speaker 1: a family friend's house and you're like, and this is
- 22:08Speaker 1: for an entry level job at a you know, Tulsa's
- 22:11Speaker 1: had some years, but it's not exactly Ohio State or Michigan.
- 22:13Speaker 5: No, not at all. But they'd had some good teams
- 22:15Speaker 5: and it was a good experience for me. And so
- 22:17Speaker 5: for the first five months I stayed in my mom's
- 22:20Speaker 5: sorority sisters family's basement.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I love this.
- 22:23Speaker 5: Didn't get paid and just trying to get some free
- 22:26Speaker 5: meals and hang out and learn some football.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Did you have a family at this point or are
- 22:29Speaker 1: you so low?
- 22:29Speaker 5: No?
- 22:30Speaker 2: No, no, solo, solo, so nothing to lose.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I want to be a coach. Yeah, and what a
- 22:34Speaker 1: lesson for everybody.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Right, just just kind of chasing dream, doing whatever is possible,
- 22:38Speaker 5: and you know, going to work. I just wanted my
- 22:40Speaker 5: foot in the door. I felt like I could, I
- 22:42Speaker 5: could earn my keep if I could get my foot
- 22:43Speaker 5: in the door, and that I was fortunate enough to
- 22:45Speaker 5: get that opportunity.
- 22:46Speaker 1: So then from Tulsa at that position, what's next?
- 22:49Speaker 5: So I'm at Tulsa for two years. My second year
- 22:51Speaker 5: at Tulsa, so really I spent that first six months
- 22:54Speaker 5: with the DFO time director Football Operations, just helping him.
- 22:58Speaker 5: But I'm in meetings, I'm around all of a sudden,
- 23:00Speaker 5: the GA that's coaching quarterbacks because we didn't have a
- 23:03Speaker 5: quarterback coach. The time goes to LSU. He had a
- 23:06Speaker 5: pre relationship with Steve Kragthorpe. Steve Kragthorpe's the PC at
- 23:10Speaker 5: LSU at the time, takes this guy with him. Well,
- 23:12Speaker 5: there's an opportunity now for a GA position in coaching quarterbacks.
- 23:17Speaker 5: So I was given that opportunity because kind of, you know,
- 23:20Speaker 5: my four or five months of being there, being around
- 23:23Speaker 5: those guys, the head coach, we've gotten to know each
- 23:25Speaker 5: other well, and I guess I'd earned his trust. So
- 23:28Speaker 5: it gave me this opportunity coach at quarterbacks. So then
- 23:31Speaker 5: meet my wife my second year there, which I think
- 23:33Speaker 5: is an important part of my story, but she would
- 23:36Speaker 5: say it is.
- 23:38Speaker 1: The record.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Ye, So meet her there, and then the summer before
- 23:44Speaker 5: my second year at Tulsa, my brother is in his
- 23:47Speaker 5: first year as a quarterback coach at the Dolphins, or
- 23:50Speaker 5: he might have been assistant quarterbacks coach time. So we're
- 23:52Speaker 5: going down on a family trip to Disney World, I
- 23:55Speaker 5: think it was. So we're hanging out. It's the last
- 23:57Speaker 5: day there in the office. So I'm just hanging out
- 23:58Speaker 5: in his office. Well, Chip Kelly comes through. Chip was
- 24:02Speaker 5: at Oregon at the time, had some NFL interests at
- 24:04Speaker 5: the time, but was going back to organ So you know,
- 24:08Speaker 5: we get a chance to talk to one of the
- 24:09Speaker 5: revolutionary minds and the football time. So we're just firing
- 24:13Speaker 5: off questions. He leaves the room. We're typing out everything
- 24:16Speaker 5: you said. Just we're note takers. That's that's kind of
- 24:18Speaker 5: what we did. When are you talking about how do
- 24:20Speaker 5: you practice?
- 24:22Speaker 1: I want it for the listeners because if you, if you,
- 24:24Speaker 1: if you just fly in and you're.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Like, all right.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Chip Kelly a coached for the Eagles and Fort Niners
- 24:28Speaker 1: and whatever he's coach. You see, there was a five
- 24:31Speaker 1: year window when he was in Oregon where every NFL coach,
- 24:34Speaker 1: like if you were asked them, who's most innovative offense?
- 24:36Speaker 1: One in it was Chip Kelly and it wasn't even
- 24:38Speaker 1: a question, no.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Not at all. So this so the chance to sit
- 24:42Speaker 5: there for three hours with this guy in a room,
- 24:43Speaker 5: just my brother and I and him and some other
- 24:45Speaker 5: coaches in and out was invaluable. So we're just firing
- 24:48Speaker 5: off questions talking all that go our separate ways. That
- 24:51Speaker 5: was cool. A year later, he ends up taking after
- 24:55Speaker 5: that season, ends up taking the Eagles job. There's a
- 24:58Speaker 5: guy on stab at Greg Austin, who was a GA
- 25:01Speaker 5: form at the time at Oregon, Okay, was actually an
- 25:04Speaker 5: offensive lineman from a brother at Nebraska. When my brother's
- 25:07Speaker 5: playing quarterback, Okay, Greg calls me. I'm on a walk,
- 25:11Speaker 5: you know, along the river in Tulsa with my girlfriend
- 25:13Speaker 5: at the time. He calls and says, hey, I'm going
- 25:17Speaker 5: to Philly with Chip. We're talking, We're throwing around names,
- 25:20Speaker 5: trying to find we need a young guy that can
- 25:22Speaker 5: work with quarterbacks, can work for nothing as long as
- 25:26Speaker 5: that we need to and so I said, I'm in.
- 25:28Speaker 5: They didn't talk about pay, we didn't talk about title,
- 25:30Speaker 5: we didn't talk about I said I'm there.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Did you ask your girlfriend on the walk? Are we in?
- 25:34Speaker 5: You just said at that time I didn't. I said, yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 5: I'm in it. So I just signed up without knowing
- 25:41Speaker 5: what was going on, and it worked out. They brought
- 25:43Speaker 5: me in, ended up getting on staff there, and that
- 25:46Speaker 5: was kind of how I got my foot in.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I remember that first, the first summer with Chip, and
- 25:50Speaker 1: it was like, first of all, you guys are the
- 25:52Speaker 1: first to like put the geo trackers on every fire,
- 25:54Speaker 1: and it was like this modern sports science And I'm
- 25:57Speaker 1: not mocking at all because I think it's a it's
- 25:58Speaker 1: the standard now. The time there was about thirty articles
- 26:02Speaker 1: about it and brought in all these different experts. And
- 26:04Speaker 1: then the other thing was you got if I'm not mistaken.
- 26:08Speaker 1: In the quarterbacks room, it was like Bradford Sanchez Tebow like,
- 26:11Speaker 1: it was everyone right.
- 26:13Speaker 5: We had everybody roll through there. When we first get there,
- 26:15Speaker 5: it's Michael Vick, Nick Foles in the room right there,
- 26:18Speaker 5: and then it goes. We ended up at Barkley Sanchez,
- 26:22Speaker 5: Sam Bradford. You know, we had a t bow came through.
- 26:24Speaker 5: We had all these guys kind of rolled through there.
- 26:26Speaker 5: So it's really cool, you know, looking back on that
- 26:28Speaker 5: three year experience.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Yeah, different quarterback types to work with, right, Like, and
- 26:32Speaker 1: how does that impact you as a coach or a
- 26:34Speaker 1: young assistant working with them? Like, Okay, here are five
- 26:37Speaker 1: different players, five different skill sets, but let's try to
- 26:40Speaker 1: do what we can to make it work for all
- 26:41Speaker 1: of them exactly.
- 26:42Speaker 5: And we kind of tinkered, you know, we had a
- 26:43Speaker 5: different starter every year. We kind of tinkered the system
- 26:45Speaker 5: every single year. And it was that was cool because
- 26:48Speaker 5: with Chip nothing was off the table. It was what
- 26:50Speaker 5: can we do? And then you know, the way he teaches,
- 26:54Speaker 5: the way he thinks, it was very forward thinking. So
- 26:57Speaker 5: it's fun. You know, we're kind of just a think
- 26:59Speaker 5: tank of we can try to do whatever we want
- 27:01Speaker 5: any sort of way.
- 27:02Speaker 1: So we have how deep would you guys go? Would
- 27:04Speaker 1: you go to like Division III? Like what do you
- 27:06Speaker 1: look for when anything? Any high school?
- 27:08Speaker 5: Should kind of cut his teeth coaching at New Hampshire
- 27:11Speaker 5: and so it was, you know, we'd watched clips. Here's
- 27:14Speaker 5: what we did at New Hampshire. We'd have install tapes
- 27:16Speaker 5: of a New Hampshire play and sometimes you get the
- 27:18Speaker 5: players looking at you sideways. And then we'd introduce it
- 27:21Speaker 5: and we'd kind of turn it into our own thing
- 27:23Speaker 5: and see if it worked. Maybe it'd make it to
- 27:24Speaker 5: a game, maybe it wouldn't, but we or we just
- 27:27Speaker 5: get access to it to coaches, and you know, maybe
- 27:29Speaker 5: it just got left on the cutting room floor, but
- 27:31Speaker 5: you're seeing all this and you're seeing that football's football,
- 27:34Speaker 5: regardless of the level. If we can make it work
- 27:36Speaker 5: in our system and explain it to our guys and
- 27:38Speaker 5: understand it and teach it, why can't we do it?
- 27:41Speaker 5: So we were always it felt like just this think
- 27:43Speaker 5: tank of football, and it was awesome.
- 27:45Speaker 1: That first year with Chip, and then obviously Chip gets
- 27:48Speaker 1: shown the door and incomes Doug Peterson. How do you
- 27:51Speaker 1: stay on staff? How do you ingrain yourself with a
- 27:53Speaker 1: whole new crew of guys? And I guess for the
- 27:56Speaker 1: coaching lifeers listening here like is there survivor's guilty for
- 28:00Speaker 1: something like that, we were like, well, some of my
- 28:02Speaker 1: guys haven't been knocked out, but I'm still here and
- 28:04Speaker 1: I've got a family to provide for.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I mean you know, I'm kind of looking
- 28:08Speaker 5: i'd gotten married at the time I got married in
- 28:10Speaker 5: twenty fifteen, that was the year that was Chip's last
- 28:12Speaker 5: season in Philly. So then Chip goes to San Francisco.
- 28:16Speaker 5: We're just kind of in limbo as a coaching staff.
- 28:18Speaker 5: You know, they tell you, hey, you get an opportunity
- 28:20Speaker 5: to meet with this new coach. See how it goes.
- 28:22Speaker 5: It's his call. So I'm kind of thinking in the
- 28:24Speaker 5: back of my mind, like I'm going to have to
- 28:25Speaker 5: go to San Francisco. And I'm like, I'm newly married,
- 28:28Speaker 5: I'm a quality control. I'm not making enough money to
- 28:30Speaker 5: live out in San Francisco, So what am I going
- 28:32Speaker 5: to do? But I get a chance, obviously sit down
- 28:35Speaker 5: with coach Peterson. We just talk, kind of share. I
- 28:38Speaker 5: kind of shared my vision for myself, what I was doing,
- 28:41Speaker 5: what I want to do, where I came from all this,
- 28:44Speaker 5: and so he just wanted to keep me and said,
- 28:47Speaker 5: you know, I'm going to make you the assistant quarterbacks coach,
- 28:49Speaker 5: which was at the time of promotion and title. I'm
- 28:52Speaker 5: still a quality control, You're still breaking that. You're doing
- 28:54Speaker 5: the same stuff. You're just you get to your resume
- 28:57Speaker 5: sounds a little better.
- 28:58Speaker 1: It's amazing, and then Chip goes on to San fran
- 29:00Speaker 1: You stay with these guys and then is that where
- 29:02Speaker 1: you meet Frank Rake and the rest.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Yes, So Frank comes in, John d. Filippa comes in
- 29:06Speaker 5: as the quarterback coach, and it was a little unprecedented
- 29:09Speaker 5: the time. They kept a lot of us. So Jeff
- 29:12Speaker 5: Stallin stays Jeff Sallen was brought in by Chip, he
- 29:14Speaker 5: stays on, Douce Staley stays on, Justin Peel stays on.
- 29:19Speaker 5: You know, there were a lot of us that kind
- 29:20Speaker 5: of stuck through. So we there was probably four or
- 29:23Speaker 5: five of us in the offensive staff room that were holdovers,
- 29:26Speaker 5: so we had a working relationship. But then that was
- 29:28Speaker 5: cool because Doug comes in. Doug brings what they're doing
- 29:31Speaker 5: with Andy. Frank brings in what he's done in his past.
- 29:34Speaker 5: John d. Flippo had been a coordinator, He brings in
- 29:36Speaker 5: what he's doing. And then four or five of us
- 29:38Speaker 5: have this idea of what we'd built with Chip, and
- 29:41Speaker 5: so we kind of meshed this whole system together and create,
- 29:44Speaker 5: you know, our offense at that time. So it's there's
- 29:47Speaker 5: bits and pieces of people say the Andy Reid system,
- 29:49Speaker 5: the chip spread, whatever it may be. But we just,
- 29:52Speaker 5: I mean, like you do any season, you just kind
- 29:54Speaker 5: of form it onto the players you have and what
- 29:56Speaker 5: you know and what you think presents issues for a defense.
- 30:00Speaker 1: That rookie year for Wentz goes well, he wins the job,
- 30:03Speaker 1: and then obviously he's having this MVP season and then
- 30:06Speaker 1: you go to Los Angeles and this much anticipated battle
- 30:08Speaker 1: against Goff and he goes down with a knee quickly.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Carson and you what was your relationship and you know
- 30:16Speaker 1: the toughness you saw from wins to kind of handle
- 30:19Speaker 1: that situation where we're gonna go on this ride and
- 30:22Speaker 1: you're on the team, but gosh, you're not the one
- 30:24Speaker 1: throwing the passes in the big game.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's the tough part of it. Again,
- 30:27Speaker 5: I'm assistant quarterback coach, so I'm more more or less
- 30:30Speaker 5: a fly on the wall.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Now.
- 30:31Speaker 5: I'm offering input to Frank and coach Y Filippo and
- 30:34Speaker 5: all that, and I'm a sounding board for the quarterbacks
- 30:37Speaker 5: as well. So I got good relationship with all those guys.
- 30:41Speaker 5: But Carson goes down, Nick steps in. I'd been there
- 30:44Speaker 5: when we originally had Nick, so Nick was there with Chip.
- 30:47Speaker 5: We end up, you know, trading Nick for Sam Bradford. Well,
- 30:51Speaker 5: that Carson's rookie year. Obviously, we trade Sam to Minnesota.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Carson steps in and ends up starting that rookie year,
- 30:57Speaker 5: bring Nick back in as the backup in seventeen. So
- 31:00Speaker 5: we had a previous relationship under a different staff.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Talk Nick out of retirement, if I'm not mistaken, Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 5: I think Nick was borderline retirement there for a while
- 31:09Speaker 5: after after a stint away Kansas City, Yeah, and then
- 31:12Speaker 5: came back through. So yeah, so we came in and
- 31:16Speaker 5: Carson goes down, and then it just kind of quickly
- 31:18Speaker 5: as an offensive staff, as quick as we could, we
- 31:21Speaker 5: pivot more to the thing that Nick does well. And
- 31:24Speaker 5: a lot of that was going back to the success
- 31:26Speaker 5: he had under Chip. Some of the play action concepts,
- 31:29Speaker 5: some of the RPO game that we developed in that system,
- 31:33Speaker 5: we'd still had in our system, and we just kind
- 31:35Speaker 5: of pulled it back out of the playbook and featured
- 31:37Speaker 5: it a little bit more, and then we're able to
- 31:39Speaker 5: kind of create this run with Nick late in the year.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Your relationship with Foals, you guys are tight, right.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Yeah. So when I got married, my wife comes out.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Nick's wife and my wife really hit it off. We
- 31:50Speaker 5: end up having kids at the same time. We both
- 31:52Speaker 5: have daughters. They end up being close, So really they
- 31:55Speaker 5: started a friendship. We have a professional relationship and then
- 31:59Speaker 5: you know, you spend time in the off season when
- 32:01Speaker 5: they're around, getting dinner together something like that. So we
- 32:03Speaker 5: developed a friendship through that. Yeah, so that was cool.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I've said this before. I got killed for it on
- 32:10Speaker 1: It was after you guys beat the Bears in that
- 32:13Speaker 1: playoff game, the Cody Parky double dooint game, and I
- 32:15Speaker 1: came on camera and said, I don't care if it's
- 32:17Speaker 1: Tom Brady, I don't care if it's Peyton Manning, I
- 32:18Speaker 1: don't care who it is. And if I need one
- 32:21Speaker 1: drive and one game, I think I'm going with Foles.
- 32:24Speaker 1: And it was one of those deals where an NFL
- 32:26Speaker 1: network put that out there and it was like a
- 32:28Speaker 1: press release and it was on Instagram. And I still
- 32:30Speaker 1: to this day people call me a clown for it,
- 32:32Speaker 1: and yet I quietly in certain corners, we'll look around
- 32:35Speaker 1: and be like I stand by like fools. When the
- 32:38Speaker 1: game was on the line, there was maybe no one
- 32:40Speaker 1: better than Nick Foles.
- 32:41Speaker 5: Yeah, he did a great job. He rose the challenge.
- 32:44Speaker 5: Those two and seventeen, the NFC Championship against Minnesota and
- 32:48Speaker 5: the Super Bowl against the Patriots are two of the
- 32:50Speaker 5: best quarterback performances and modern folks to sit there and
- 32:54Speaker 5: watch him play and yeah, exactly. I mean, I think
- 32:57Speaker 5: he played as well as anybody has and those two
- 32:59Speaker 5: and for the moment they were you know, it's not
- 33:01Speaker 5: just some regular season game this guy pulls and they're
- 33:03Speaker 5: two of the biggest games and the franchise history at
- 33:06Speaker 5: the time, and so he to play the way he
- 33:09Speaker 5: did was awesome.
- 33:10Speaker 1: You go to the Colts after the Eagles, that's you know,
- 33:15Speaker 1: with Frank and then you end up in Jacksonville with
- 33:17Speaker 1: Doug last year. You get there first time where it's like, Okay,
- 33:22Speaker 1: yes Doug is an offensive coach, but it's really your offense.
- 33:25Speaker 1: The change when you get that title and you get
- 33:27Speaker 1: the opportunity to kind of move that with this young
- 33:29Speaker 1: quarterback Trevor Lawrence, especially coming off what was just you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: a forgettable first season with Trevor, Like, what was that like?
- 33:37Speaker 1: Going into that That.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Was fun because it was kind of a clean slate.
- 33:41Speaker 5: You know, rarely do you walk into a situation where
- 33:43Speaker 5: you have this first round kid that you know, generational
- 33:45Speaker 5: talent that gets thrown around a lot.
- 33:47Speaker 1: But that was it.
- 33:47Speaker 5: But you know, honestly struggled his rookie year. He's the
- 33:50Speaker 5: first to admit that. And so but you get this
- 33:53Speaker 5: basically piece of clay, and the type of kitty is
- 33:55Speaker 5: obviously becomes a big deal. But you've got a clean
- 33:58Speaker 5: slate to work with. We've got money to spend that,
- 34:01Speaker 5: you know, the front office was willing to spend and
- 34:03Speaker 5: go out and invest in the receivers and the people
- 34:05Speaker 5: around him. And then again we put together a pretty
- 34:08Speaker 5: cool coaching staff and kind of made our own system.
- 34:11Speaker 5: So we take what we'd done in Philly that Doug
- 34:14Speaker 5: and I are familiar with. Phil Rausher comes in from Minnesota,
- 34:17Speaker 5: you know, kind of in the coming from the Kubiak system,
- 34:20Speaker 5: Jim Bob Cooter and Mike McCoy coming from more or
- 34:24Speaker 5: less the Peyton manning Philip Rivers passing game, which was
- 34:27Speaker 5: something I was familiar with being with Frank Reich and Indy.
- 34:31Speaker 5: So we the three of us kind of have our
- 34:33Speaker 5: own language in the past game. Doug and I have
- 34:35Speaker 5: our language from Philly. Phil kind of has these revolutionary
- 34:39Speaker 5: ideas from and on in our world, revolutionary ideas from
- 34:42Speaker 5: the Kubiak system, the Shanahan thing taking over, and so
- 34:45Speaker 5: we just kind of put this together and then we
- 34:48Speaker 5: molded around this really special young quarterback, you know, bringing
- 34:53Speaker 5: in Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, Evan Ingram, Travis, etn. And
- 34:57Speaker 5: just kind of tried to have massage it to fit
- 34:58Speaker 5: our skill set, the skill set of the guys around him,
- 35:01Speaker 5: and be creative and you know, again with Doug, Doug's
- 35:05Speaker 5: encouraging us to to think out of the box and
- 35:08Speaker 5: do whatever we need to do to create the offense
- 35:11Speaker 5: that we're going to become.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Two different. Trevor Lawrence questions A when did you first
- 35:16Speaker 1: see And it could have been the first practice he
- 35:18Speaker 1: laid eyes on him, like this guy's special. When was
- 35:20Speaker 1: that moment for you where you're like, ooh, this is
- 35:22Speaker 1: something different.
- 35:23Speaker 5: Yeah. I think just watching him throw through the OTA process,
- 35:27Speaker 5: just routes on air, it's like this is the ball
- 35:30Speaker 5: never hits the ground, you know, it's just kind of
- 35:32Speaker 5: that type of thing where it's on air, that's what
- 35:33Speaker 5: you'd expect. But you know, he was special in that
- 35:36Speaker 5: regard and I'd been around really good high picks, you know,
- 35:40Speaker 5: Michael Vick, Sam Bradford, those type of Carson went. You've
- 35:43Speaker 5: been around those high picks and you'd seen it and
- 35:45Speaker 5: you're like, okay, it's on par with that, it's special.
- 35:50Speaker 5: And then just getting to be around him through the
- 35:52Speaker 5: off season, you're like, this guy's are really laid back.
- 35:54Speaker 5: You know, nothing seems to bother him. He doesn't get
- 35:56Speaker 5: but you don't know, you haven't been in any fire
- 35:58Speaker 5: with him. Yeah, go through the season, we kind of
- 36:00Speaker 5: start out highs and lows. You know things are going good.
- 36:03Speaker 5: We hit a little rough patch, but you believe like
- 36:05Speaker 5: this guy's and special. But the mindset I think really
- 36:08Speaker 5: showed up to me particularly was the Baltimore game. That's
- 36:12Speaker 5: kind of where we started to hit our stride where
- 36:14Speaker 5: the fourth quarter we need a drive to win the
- 36:15Speaker 5: game and he looks like he's just playing catch in
- 36:18Speaker 5: the backyard. You could feel from the press box you
- 36:20Speaker 5: can feel this momentum building and the way the kid's playing,
- 36:25Speaker 5: the confidence, the way he's throwing the ball. I mean,
- 36:27Speaker 5: you're just watching him throw it and you kind of
- 36:29Speaker 5: know there's a little more conviction in that. You see
- 36:31Speaker 5: the passion come out and the way we win the
- 36:33Speaker 5: game and all that. So you start to see that,
- 36:35Speaker 5: you start to think, like, Okay, this mindset thing with
- 36:38Speaker 5: the kids real. He is steady, he's even keeled, he's composed,
- 36:43Speaker 5: but he's passionate, like he is a fiery fighter. And
- 36:46Speaker 5: that's kind of just what you wanted to see. You
- 36:47Speaker 5: hadn't really seen it.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and of course you know, the great high school player,
- 36:53Speaker 1: a great college player. But after the first year of
- 36:55Speaker 1: the pros, it's like, all right, well that doesn't mean
- 36:56Speaker 1: anything in the NFL. Sure, And to hear that he's
- 36:59Speaker 1: a laid back. I don't know Trevor. I've never interviewed him.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I don't know him, but everyone says he is as
- 37:05Speaker 1: authentic as it comes. He is who he is. He's
- 37:06Speaker 1: not trying to put on airs and either you know
- 37:09Speaker 1: the players, they all love him. So what is that
- 37:12Speaker 1: quality that you see from him that really makes him
- 37:13Speaker 1: stand out?
- 37:14Speaker 5: That's the big Honestly, we were playing We played golf
- 37:17Speaker 5: with a couple buddies two or three days ago, and
- 37:19Speaker 5: I had a buddy that's a Jags friend that didn't
- 37:21Speaker 5: know him or anything like that, and we get off
- 37:22Speaker 5: He's like, is he always like that? Just chill? He said, yeah,
- 37:25Speaker 5: you know, I've never really seen him lose as cool
- 37:27Speaker 5: or anything like that. I've seen him getting tense and
- 37:30Speaker 5: a little more competitive, but he's pretty much just always
- 37:33Speaker 5: the same guy, even keeled, and I think just the
- 37:36Speaker 5: authenticity that he carries himself with guys appreciate that. He
- 37:40Speaker 5: is humble, but he's accountable. You know, if something goes wrong,
- 37:43Speaker 5: he's the first to say, that's all me. If whether
- 37:46Speaker 5: it's him or not, he's the quarterback, he's going to
- 37:48Speaker 5: stand there. He's going to take the arrows for his guys.
- 37:50Speaker 5: And I think guys see that and guys respond to that.
- 37:52Speaker 5: I mean, when you know what you're getting out of
- 37:54Speaker 5: a guy, you know he's got your back, you know
- 37:57Speaker 5: you're you're willing to fight a little extra for him.
- 37:59Speaker 5: And I think that's our players saw that from the jump,
- 38:01Speaker 5: because we brought in a lot of new guys that
- 38:03Speaker 5: you know, didn't know much about him other than the
- 38:05Speaker 5: hype and struggles his rookie year. But you know, he
- 38:09Speaker 5: quickly earned everybody's trust and the way he prepares and
- 38:11Speaker 5: the way he plays and the way he treats people now.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I'm going to get you on the board in the
- 38:15Speaker 1: All twenty two and you're gonna put the filmer on
- 38:18Speaker 1: your favorite Trevor Lawrence pass of the twenty twenty two season.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Oh man, there were some special ones. One of the ones,
- 38:25Speaker 5: I'd say that really kind of part of it was
- 38:27Speaker 5: the time in the season. Looking back now you realize
- 38:30Speaker 5: it was a spark. But we go honestly, we beat
- 38:33Speaker 5: Baltimore in this emotional comeback win. We go to Detroit
- 38:36Speaker 5: and just get our faces kicked in. I mean, we
- 38:38Speaker 5: fumble the second play of the game. They just ran
- 38:40Speaker 5: us up and Trevor gets dinged up pretty good. So
- 38:43Speaker 5: he's hurt. You know, we thought he tears his acl,
- 38:46Speaker 5: his ankle something like that. He comes back into this game,
- 38:48Speaker 5: we're already down thirty, fights his tail off for his guys.
- 38:52Speaker 5: That was cool to see. Don't practice much of the
- 38:54Speaker 5: week going. We're playing Tennessee at Tennessee, first time we're
- 38:57Speaker 5: playing them in season. So he's banged up. Yeah, so
- 39:00Speaker 5: he's banged up. We're not sure if he's going to play.
- 39:02Speaker 1: C J.
- 39:03Speaker 5: Betherd's ready to roll all week. You know, come Friday,
- 39:06Speaker 5: Trevis's I'm playing I'm good to go. So he comes
- 39:08Speaker 5: out again. We're trying to limit movements with him, protect
- 39:11Speaker 5: him a little bit. Well, you know, we just kind
- 39:14Speaker 5: of start rolling as an offense, throwing the ball over
- 39:16Speaker 5: the yard. We have a short, little five yard in
- 39:18Speaker 5: route to Evan Ingram singled up on the outside or
- 39:21Speaker 5: runner two by two, So he's outside at number one,
- 39:23Speaker 5: just gonna run a five yard in banging a completion.
- 39:25Speaker 5: Keep this change moving well, Trevor pumps him. Trevor gives
- 39:28Speaker 5: him a double move, just feeling something at the time.
- 39:30Speaker 5: You know, he'd been playing really well throughout the game.
- 39:33Speaker 5: Throws a double move. Evan doesn't necessarily win right away,
- 39:37Speaker 5: but Trevor puts in a spot where Evan's got a
- 39:39Speaker 5: chance to go get it, make a play that kind
- 39:41Speaker 5: of just right there showed you the confidence, the ownership
- 39:44Speaker 5: he had in the system himself. You know, I think
- 39:47Speaker 5: that game, he's thirty of forty two for three ninety
- 39:50Speaker 5: and three touchdowns, playing on a bad ad play on
- 39:52Speaker 5: a game we didn't even know if he'd play it,
- 39:54Speaker 5: and that really sparked us. I think that kind of
- 39:56Speaker 5: kicked us into a five six game win streak or
- 39:58Speaker 5: something like that at the time.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And it also shows the ceiling right like or the
- 40:02Speaker 1: unlimited like oh wait, he could do.
- 40:04Speaker 5: That exactly, and the confidence to do it. You know,
- 40:06Speaker 5: that's not something we necessarily we talked about, hey, you've
- 40:08Speaker 5: got the green when I coached to do that, not necessarily,
- 40:11Speaker 5: but he doesn't. He gives him a pump. He has
- 40:13Speaker 5: faith in his guys and he can throw it right
- 40:15Speaker 5: where he wants to throw it and guy makes a play.
- 40:17Speaker 5: So that for us as a coaching staff was like, Okay,
- 40:20Speaker 5: this guy's special. There's something different. He believes in this
- 40:22Speaker 5: his teammates. That was a big turning point for our
- 40:26Speaker 5: season there with that throw. But you know, there's a
- 40:28Speaker 5: number of other throws that you know in the Dallas
- 40:30Speaker 5: late in the Dallas game, I think it's fourth down,
- 40:32Speaker 5: he scrambling, he throws when it goes basically threw a
- 40:35Speaker 5: guy's hands over his head, hit Zay Jones, keeps us rolling,
- 40:38Speaker 5: walk off field, go. There are a couple things like
- 40:40Speaker 5: that that I could name a few that were just
- 40:43Speaker 5: special type throws.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And the potential for him unlimited.
- 40:47Speaker 5: Yeah, unlimited. I would I wouldn't put a ceiling on it,
- 40:50Speaker 5: just athletically where he is mentally where he is. You know,
- 40:54Speaker 5: hopefully we can keep this core together with him to
- 40:56Speaker 5: continue to grow around him because they all play really
- 40:58Speaker 5: well together. But you know, it's really fun to see
- 41:02Speaker 5: him just want to come in every single day and
- 41:05Speaker 5: get better and be a better play. That's the way
- 41:07Speaker 5: he attacks it and the way he carries himself.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I know how close you are with your brother Zach.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Do you guys ever you know, whether you're hanging out
- 41:14Speaker 1: at the family having a barbecue or just texting him like,
- 41:17Speaker 1: my guy's better than yours, Trevor would be Burrow, And
- 41:20Speaker 1: do you ever go like that way? Does it ever
- 41:21Speaker 1: get to that point where you guys like this is
- 41:23Speaker 1: my dude, that's really let's go.
- 41:26Speaker 5: I think we both I think it's both clear we
- 41:28Speaker 5: love the guy we're coaching right now. It's never come
- 41:31Speaker 5: down to my guys better than your guy. But I
- 41:33Speaker 5: think both of us would would stand on the table
- 41:35Speaker 5: for the guy we have right now. But it's fun
- 41:37Speaker 5: to see. I mean, we're just getting to work with
- 41:39Speaker 5: these two guys that are a special point in their
- 41:41Speaker 5: career right now.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And what a cool test when it is to your
- 41:43Speaker 1: family that you've got two brothers, and both of you
- 41:46Speaker 1: guys are in the ears of maybe the best two
- 41:48Speaker 1: young quarterbacks under a certain age in the NFL. And
- 41:52Speaker 1: your dynamic with Zach, like, are you watching games and
- 41:55Speaker 1: looking at like the corner of your eye at the scoreboard,
- 41:56Speaker 1: either rooting for him, we're doing against Like, are you
- 41:58Speaker 1: keeping an eye on what they're doing too?
- 41:59Speaker 5: Absolutely, that's my brother. I'm his biggest fan. So unless
- 42:05Speaker 5: it hinders the jag in some way, I'm rooting for
- 42:08Speaker 5: the Bengals always. So I always kind of keep an
- 42:09Speaker 5: eye on where the scores are in their games. Whenever
- 42:12Speaker 5: I get a chance, in between a drive and between
- 42:14Speaker 5: a quarter, whatever it may be, when my attention doesn't
- 42:17Speaker 5: have to be dialed in, you kind of catch the
- 42:19Speaker 5: scoreboard and say, oh, they're winning by four, they're in
- 42:21Speaker 5: a tight game, whatever it may be. You just keep
- 42:23Speaker 5: an eye on it. When we get a chance, we're
- 42:25Speaker 5: not playing at the same time, I've got it on
- 42:27Speaker 5: I'm watching the Bengals.
- 42:28Speaker 1: What makes you guys different from each other? Obviously you
- 42:31Speaker 1: see the last name, and you see that you guys
- 42:33Speaker 1: both wanted to coach, and like your father, you're both
- 42:35Speaker 1: coaching offenses and you're doing a great job at the
- 42:37Speaker 1: NFL the highest level. What separates the two of you
- 42:39Speaker 1: or what would you both say, Hey, if you look
- 42:41Speaker 1: in the mirror, this is a long different than Zach.
- 42:43Speaker 5: That's a good question. Honestly, I don't know. We've never
- 42:46Speaker 5: worked together. You know, we've always shared ideas. I design,
- 42:49Speaker 5: not necessarily I'd love to work with them at some
- 42:51Speaker 5: point in time. I think that'd just be cool for
- 42:53Speaker 5: us to get a chance to work together. But you know,
- 42:56Speaker 5: our path is just never the right time to kind
- 42:58Speaker 5: of get together. You know, he was a first taking
- 43:01Speaker 5: his job as a first year coach, and you know,
- 43:03Speaker 5: when I was coming out of Philly, it wasn't really
- 43:06Speaker 5: he had two tough years in Cincinnati. It wasn't really
- 43:08Speaker 5: the right time to bring your brother in and double
- 43:10Speaker 5: down on that. So, you know, that one something that
- 43:13Speaker 5: ever really came up. We never talked about, you know,
- 43:15Speaker 5: doing this, not doing this. It was just I've got
- 43:18Speaker 5: my path, you've got your path. Let's do our thing
- 43:20Speaker 5: and root for each other from far. If it works
- 43:22Speaker 5: out in the future, that would be awesome. But uh,
- 43:25Speaker 5: I'm not I don't know if I could say what's
- 43:27Speaker 5: necessarily different. We have a very similar demeanor. We've kind
- 43:31Speaker 5: of come up in different paths, but at the same time,
- 43:33Speaker 5: our paths have crossed and weird ways where we've been
- 43:36Speaker 5: exposed to the same systems through different people. But you know,
- 43:40Speaker 5: I think just the the element of like our environments
- 43:43Speaker 5: are different at this point in time. So it's you know,
- 43:45Speaker 5: he's doing what he needs to do to be the
- 43:47Speaker 5: best coach for the Bengals, and I'm doing what I
- 43:49Speaker 5: need to do to be the best office coordinator for
- 43:51Speaker 5: the Jaguars. So you know, our offense is pivot at
- 43:54Speaker 5: certain times, and whatever that may be is what it
- 43:56Speaker 5: needs to be. We have different terminology. I know that
- 43:59Speaker 5: we share enough ideas that I hear him talk and
- 44:02Speaker 5: things sound different. But I watched them play and we
- 44:04Speaker 5: run that play. You know, I may ask question about
- 44:06Speaker 5: how you're coaching this one and steal some ideas off
- 44:09Speaker 5: him because I have access to him.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So Yeah, one of the things I loved about Zach
- 44:14Speaker 1: last year. We've always you know, he had the Super
- 44:16Speaker 1: Bowl run and then the obviously the horrible situation against Buffalo,
- 44:20Speaker 1: and then you know, Zac should a little edge afterwards
- 44:23Speaker 1: about the coin toss and all that stuff, and a
- 44:25Speaker 1: little attitude kind of embodied like, hey, we're not the
- 44:27Speaker 1: old Bengals, will you push us around anymore? Did you
- 44:30Speaker 1: see that always from him, because that's the first time
- 44:32Speaker 1: I think football fans saw that from Zach where there's
- 44:34Speaker 1: a little bit of bite to him too.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Oh. Absolutely, there's so much that you know, he to
- 44:40Speaker 5: an extent lets people in, but he really it's coach
- 44:42Speaker 5: speak when he's in front of people and in front
- 44:44Speaker 5: of the media and things like that, which most guys are.
- 44:47Speaker 5: So I know, I know the fiery competitive guy he is,
- 44:51Speaker 5: and probably in front of his team too that they know,
- 44:54Speaker 5: and you know, I've seen it as a competitor him
- 44:56Speaker 5: growing up and watching him coach and talking to him,
- 44:59Speaker 5: and you know, I know how aggressive his demeanor is,
- 45:01Speaker 5: his mindset is, and then I also see what he
- 45:04Speaker 5: puts in front of the media and all that. So
- 45:05Speaker 5: I don't know that people have seen the true Zach
- 45:08Speaker 5: that he presents in front of his team or that
- 45:10Speaker 5: I know him as, but certainly proud of the way
- 45:13Speaker 5: he presents himself and you know where he's gotten his
- 45:16Speaker 5: team at this point.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Dude, it's so cool that you're both doing it, obviously,
- 45:19Speaker 1: but on an individual level. Your path has been great too,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and now you're at this point and we look at
- 45:24Speaker 1: this Jaguars team heading into twenty twenty three, just to
- 45:26Speaker 1: bring it up to speed, a sexy pick for a
- 45:29Speaker 1: lot of people, like it was there. They're on the cusp,
- 45:32Speaker 1: they had Kansas City on the ropes. What's the message
- 45:35Speaker 1: to the team going into twenty twenty eight three and
- 45:37Speaker 1: is it one of those where it's like, don't read
- 45:39Speaker 1: the headlines, just worry about ourselves.
- 45:40Speaker 5: Yeah. I think we've always kind of been that way,
- 45:42Speaker 5: even last year when we started out, and a lot
- 45:45Speaker 5: of it stems from coach Peterson. You know, he's the
- 45:47Speaker 5: same positive, optimistic, consistent guy every single day in front
- 45:51Speaker 5: of the team, and we've always kept the focus on us.
- 45:54Speaker 5: You know, we don't care if people are saying we're
- 45:55Speaker 5: the same old Jaguars. Oh this is a new age thing.
- 45:58Speaker 5: You know, they're they're up and coming team. None of
- 46:00Speaker 5: that matters to us because the coolest thing about this
- 46:03Speaker 5: thing is, you know, you got to go prove it
- 46:04Speaker 5: for three hours every Sunday, and so none of it
- 46:07Speaker 5: matters whether you're hyped, favored, underdog, whatever it may be.
- 46:11Speaker 5: And our guys we have really high character players that
- 46:14Speaker 5: understand that, and everybody kind of wants to prove that
- 46:17Speaker 5: Sunday that we're ready to roll and we have an
- 46:19Speaker 5: opportunity to win and we can put our best foot forward.
- 46:21Speaker 5: So our focus has solely been on getting better, and
- 46:24Speaker 5: that's the message from Coach Peterson. That's the message we
- 46:27Speaker 5: relate to our players. That's the cool thing is you
- 46:29Speaker 5: hear them say that. You know, we hear the expectations.
- 46:32Speaker 5: It's hard not to hear all that. But I don't
- 46:34Speaker 5: think any of it matters to our guys at this
- 46:36Speaker 5: point in time, because at the end of the day,
- 46:38Speaker 5: they're going to kick them all off on Sunday and
- 46:40Speaker 5: you're going to see who the better team is or
- 46:42Speaker 5: who's going to come out on top of that game.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Let me ask you, as we're in July right now,
- 46:52Speaker 1: you know, I remember when Robert Griffin and I kind
- 46:54Speaker 1: of had that big breakout year. The following off season,
- 46:57Speaker 1: there are a lot of articles about defensive coordinators spending
- 47:00Speaker 1: the off season kind of constructing ways to stop whatever
- 47:03Speaker 1: the Shanahans had built for Robert Griffin, and you know,
- 47:05Speaker 1: there was a lot of copycat We were in the
- 47:07Speaker 1: league with that. As an offensive coordinator, what do you
- 47:11Speaker 1: do during the off season to improve your skills to
- 47:14Speaker 1: get your offense even better? And is there a certain
- 47:17Speaker 1: point where you're like, all right, I need to have
- 47:20Speaker 1: this as vacation, but hey, I got to get in
- 47:22Speaker 1: the lab. Also, this offense announced my time to do it.
- 47:25Speaker 5: Yeah, you're constantly doing it. From the moment the season ends,
- 47:28Speaker 5: you kind of do your exit interviews, you sit down
- 47:30Speaker 5: with your staff and we kind of mapped out.
- 47:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 47:32Speaker 5: It ended up being we started like, all right, let's
- 47:35Speaker 5: find five things we really need to improve as an offense,
- 47:37Speaker 5: you know, whatever that may be. As the off season
- 47:39Speaker 5: went involved, I think right now we had like nineteen
- 47:41Speaker 5: points of we need to do better at this. Okay,
- 47:44Speaker 5: what does that mean? That could be That's what we
- 47:47Speaker 5: ended up with.
- 47:47Speaker 1: I love this, not twenty nineteen.
- 47:50Speaker 5: And it goes on. It just evolves, you know, it's far.
- 47:53Speaker 5: It just ended up that way of and it could
- 47:56Speaker 5: be one hundred. You know, there's all these little sub
- 47:58Speaker 5: points off of it. But from we need to improve
- 48:01Speaker 5: our short yards, we need to eliminate our negative runs.
- 48:03Speaker 5: You know. I think at the end of the day,
- 48:04Speaker 5: we were one of the most explosed offenses, but we're
- 48:07Speaker 5: one of the most We may have led the league
- 48:10Speaker 5: and negative plays on first and second half, so we
- 48:12Speaker 5: were extremely volatile. We could get ourselves out of it.
- 48:15Speaker 5: We'd get in first and ten, go to second, and
- 48:17Speaker 5: twelve to go to first and ten. So we'd get
- 48:20Speaker 5: ourselves out of these holes because we have these players
- 48:22Speaker 5: that could do special things. But like, we need to
- 48:24Speaker 5: identify how we can get better at this, and we've
- 48:26Speaker 5: kind of gone about that our own certain way. Part
- 48:29Speaker 5: of us just evaluating who we are, what we did,
- 48:32Speaker 5: what worked, what didn't work, What do we want to
- 48:34Speaker 5: continue to invest in, what do we want to you know,
- 48:36Speaker 5: maybe put aside we thought we'd be great at that,
- 48:37Speaker 5: we're not. Let's put that aside and hut our losses
- 48:40Speaker 5: and move forward. Where can we add who's doing something
- 48:43Speaker 5: that looks similar to the way we play the game,
- 48:46Speaker 5: or has similar players. How are they using their players
- 48:49Speaker 5: that's maybe we don't have in our system at this
- 48:51Speaker 5: point in time, or we have in our system we
- 48:54Speaker 5: just hadn't thought to do it that way.
- 48:55Speaker 1: We need them.
- 48:56Speaker 5: Yeah, So you know that's the fun part of it
- 49:00Speaker 5: right now is more than ever in football, you have
- 49:03Speaker 5: access to so much. You know, everybody's watching, everybody's watching everybody.
- 49:07Speaker 5: You can watch all of college, all the college teams
- 49:10Speaker 5: out there, what they're doing Twitter. You see some crazy
- 49:14Speaker 5: high school D three play no ideas off the table,
- 49:17Speaker 5: and you can you have access to all that. You
- 49:18Speaker 5: can see, all that, you can read these articles, you
- 49:20Speaker 5: can listen to podcast of guys' philosophies and how they
- 49:23Speaker 5: got to where they got to. And so you know,
- 49:27Speaker 5: I've been asked a couple of what's your hobby. What
- 49:29Speaker 5: do you like to do? I like football, So I
- 49:31Speaker 5: like to watch football, listen to football, if an old
- 49:34Speaker 5: games on NFL. My wife got on me the other day,
- 49:35Speaker 5: she said, it's.
- 49:36Speaker 1: The Office Network.
- 49:38Speaker 5: I watched the twenty sixteen Cowboys Week fifteen game that's
- 49:42Speaker 5: on it, whatever it was, And you know.
- 49:45Speaker 1: It's just stress you and me. Exactly last week. Last week,
- 49:50Speaker 1: I was at the thing for Fox, and I go
- 49:52Speaker 1: up to Greg Olsen and Kevin Burkhart and I'm like,
- 49:54Speaker 1: I was up this week. I'm like, you guys called
- 49:57Speaker 1: a game a couple of years ago Patriots Colts, and
- 50:00Speaker 1: I think you were probably coaching in it. It was a
- 50:01Speaker 1: Saturday game and I'm like, you guys did a really
- 50:03Speaker 1: nice job. And Burkhart looks at me, He's like, why
- 50:05Speaker 1: are you watching that? Are you watching that? It's June?
- 50:07Speaker 1: Why are you watching that?
- 50:08Speaker 5: Like, I don't know.
- 50:09Speaker 1: And I loved it.
- 50:10Speaker 5: It's worked, obviously, but that's it's fun. That's what I
- 50:12Speaker 5: enjoyed doing.
- 50:13Speaker 1: It's also a drug.
- 50:14Speaker 5: I love it. I'm listening to podcast. I texted you
- 50:17Speaker 5: the other day that I was listening. I was watching
- 50:18Speaker 5: your YouTube with you and Kellen doing this thing. And
- 50:21Speaker 5: you know, I'm trying to pick nuggets. Every time I
- 50:23Speaker 5: hear kill and say something insightful, I go to my notes,
- 50:25Speaker 5: throw it in there or something whatever it may be.
- 50:28Speaker 5: So that's the fun part of it right now, is
- 50:29Speaker 5: you constantly learn, you can constantly grow, constantly evolve, and
- 50:33Speaker 5: if there's something I think can help our team, then
- 50:35Speaker 5: I'll steal it. I'll take it. I'll turn it into
- 50:37Speaker 5: ours and present a target.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Let's do a little rapid fire here. Your father was
- 50:42Speaker 1: obviously a legendary high school coach who was your greatest
- 50:48Speaker 1: mentor in this profession. Would you say it's your pops.
- 50:51Speaker 5: I would say it's my brother, just because now my
- 50:53Speaker 5: dad was coaching, but he got out of coaching before
- 50:57Speaker 5: I was even born, so he coached justice, but he
- 50:59Speaker 5: wasn't coaching college at the time. So my brother and
- 51:03Speaker 5: I have My brother's obviously five years older than me.
- 51:05Speaker 5: He's always been ahead of it, so he was always
- 51:08Speaker 5: kind of could call him and you know, how do
- 51:10Speaker 5: I deal with this coming up, because maybe he went
- 51:12Speaker 5: through it before, So I would say him, and then
- 51:14Speaker 5: Frank Craich and Doug Peterson are certainly two other names
- 51:17Speaker 5: that you know in Chip Kelly's influence on me, I
- 51:20Speaker 5: would say that's that's never really left my mind and
- 51:22Speaker 5: stuff like that. So those those guys, you know, my
- 51:25Speaker 5: brother and Frank are probably too that I talked to
- 51:27Speaker 5: the most. And then obviously Doug. I can walk around
- 51:29Speaker 5: the corner and talked about who.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Is the player that you've coached that you've looked at
- 51:33Speaker 1: and said that that's just the biggest physical freak I've
- 51:35Speaker 1: ever been around, and this is this is a special dude.
- 51:38Speaker 5: That I've coached. I mean Michael Vick.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Yeah, at that even at that age.
- 51:42Speaker 5: I'm twenty four years old, when I get in the NFL,
- 51:44Speaker 5: I've played with Michael Vick on Madden for ten years
- 51:47Speaker 5: before that, and that was the one. You know, you're
- 51:49Speaker 5: not allowed to play with him. It's different.
- 51:50Speaker 1: No, yeah, him and Algae Crumpler and Brian Finneran you
- 51:53Speaker 1: cannot play with that team. Yeah, I think that. I
- 51:55Speaker 1: think it was for Madden, yes, yeah.
- 51:57Speaker 5: So so Michael Vick was the one that's like, this
- 52:00Speaker 5: guy is a moss. Just the way he throws the football,
- 52:02Speaker 5: the way he moves effort like that was really you know,
- 52:06Speaker 5: of being on the field with watching them day and
- 52:08Speaker 5: day out. Just a physical freak. Jason Peters, you know,
- 52:12Speaker 5: left tackle for the Eagles, one of those guys is
- 52:14Speaker 5: just his ability to move another grown man was incredible.
- 52:18Speaker 5: And then the thing I tell people too is as
- 52:21Speaker 5: a coach, the opponent when we went to in twenty seventeen,
- 52:24Speaker 5: we went to Carolina on a Thursday night and watching
- 52:27Speaker 5: Julius Peppers and Cam Newton run out of the tunnel,
- 52:30Speaker 5: it was just like, wait, what are those two like.
- 52:33Speaker 1: They belong on the same as the others.
- 52:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, they were just athletics specimens. So it was
- 52:39Speaker 5: cool to see. It's just cool to you know, get
- 52:41Speaker 5: to be on field level with those guys and see
- 52:43Speaker 5: those guys every single week.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Yeah, your favorite play call that you've made that you
- 52:48Speaker 1: take pride in and you're like, all right, that was
- 52:50Speaker 1: kind of unique and you haven't seen that everywhere. If
- 52:52Speaker 1: you can go into the annals of the Press Taylor
- 52:54Speaker 1: play call history.
- 52:56Speaker 5: Well, another big one was the Chargers playoff game. You know,
- 53:00Speaker 5: we we were kind of making this comeback. We score,
- 53:03Speaker 5: we're about to kick their point, they get a penalty,
- 53:05Speaker 5: balls on the one. Doug says, let's go for two.
- 53:08Speaker 5: We've got a little screen called out to Evan Ingram.
- 53:10Speaker 5: It's got a at the time because it's short yardage,
- 53:13Speaker 5: goal line played, it's got to kill on it for
- 53:15Speaker 5: Trevor to sneak it. Well, you know it's on the one.
- 53:18Speaker 5: It's two point play, I'm saying, and I head say, hey,
- 53:20Speaker 5: no kill, just throw the screen, let's roll, and Trevor
- 53:23Speaker 5: kind of just you know, Trump's everything dives in the
- 53:25Speaker 5: end zone. Nobody's blocking the sneak for him. You know,
- 53:28Speaker 5: he does it all on his own. The line's not cutting,
- 53:30Speaker 5: nothing like that. So that was one of those ones.
- 53:32Speaker 5: It's like that worked out well everything, you know, moment
- 53:35Speaker 5: I told him not to do it, he does it.
- 53:37Speaker 2: You know, that's kind of where you'll take it.
- 53:39Speaker 5: A little player with momentum kind of do his thing
- 53:41Speaker 5: right now. You don't want to take a stinger away,
- 53:43Speaker 5: and he was feeling it. He made a play. So
- 53:45Speaker 5: that was the one that's like, I don't know if
- 53:46Speaker 5: that's a great play call. It obviously was not, but
- 53:49Speaker 5: he made it work, and so that was a cool
- 53:51Speaker 5: one to be a part of him. Like, all right,
- 53:52Speaker 5: things are hitting here.
- 53:53Speaker 1: So were you in so far? For when the Rams
- 53:56Speaker 1: played the Bengals in the Super Bowl two years ago,
- 53:58Speaker 1: I was where were you seated? Let me hear everything.
- 54:01Speaker 5: I had just gotten the job here. So I signed
- 54:03Speaker 5: my contract on like Thursday, and I tell Doug like,
- 54:07Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm enough to miss Monday, Like I got
- 54:09Speaker 5: to go to the Super Bowl, so, you know, second
- 54:11Speaker 5: day of work, I'm asking for the day off, all
- 54:13Speaker 5: ready to go out there and celebrate or watch my
- 54:16Speaker 5: brother kind of you know, in the biggest game of
- 54:18Speaker 5: his career. So we're out there. You know, they've got
- 54:20Speaker 5: a suite for the family. We're in Beyonce, jay z
- 54:24Speaker 5: or Beyonce maybe just they are three suites down. My
- 54:27Speaker 5: sister's waving at her all this stuff. So that was
- 54:30Speaker 5: a really cool experience just getting to be there for that,
- 54:33Speaker 5: watching them play, you know, come down to the very end.
- 54:35Speaker 5: That was a cool experience for our family to be
- 54:37Speaker 5: able to sit there and see that and watch that.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Yeah, your Eagles Super Bowl Parade memory is what I mean.
- 54:44Speaker 5: I tell people that was probably the most fun I've
- 54:47Speaker 5: ever had in coaching. You know, people say it was.
- 54:48Speaker 1: The super game, the parade.
- 54:50Speaker 5: The game is so stressful. To see the confetti fall,
- 54:53Speaker 5: it's it's almost just relief at that point it's over.
- 54:56Speaker 5: We did it. The parade as you wake up in
- 54:58Speaker 5: the morning and you know we're about to go out
- 55:00Speaker 5: to a million screaming fans celebrating us, yelling at us
- 55:04Speaker 5: all the time. So the parade was awesome. I remember
- 55:07Speaker 5: Joe Douglas were on different floats, but seeing him at
- 55:10Speaker 5: the end, when we get to the Rocky steps and
- 55:13Speaker 5: all that, seeing him he's got a big gash on
- 55:14Speaker 5: his face. I guess he didn't know. A fan throws
- 55:17Speaker 5: him a big beer can, hits him in the face,
- 55:18Speaker 5: cuts his face. You know, I think he was excited
- 55:21Speaker 5: about it. He didn't care at the time. Stuff like that.
- 55:24Speaker 5: Just those memories of seeing all that Jason Kelsey's speech
- 55:27Speaker 5: and the Momber's outfit, you know, Fletcher Cox trying to
- 55:30Speaker 5: talk and people getting them off the stage, just things
- 55:32Speaker 5: like that that you just remember, and that was a
- 55:35Speaker 5: really special day for us.
- 55:37Speaker 1: It's a special team. I feel like that was like
- 55:39Speaker 1: a really cool team that was of that model where
- 55:42Speaker 1: there was these homegrown guys, but they also went and
- 55:45Speaker 1: acquired guys like Alshon Jeffery, and they acquired you know,
- 55:49Speaker 1: jay A Jayi at mid season and they put it
- 55:52Speaker 1: all together and then the Eagles almost overnight they're in
- 55:55Speaker 1: Super Bowl again with a whole new crew, but they
- 55:57Speaker 1: still have some of those holdovers from that guy, that
- 56:00Speaker 1: twenty seventeen team. When you look back on it, did
- 56:02Speaker 1: you know at the time it was as special as
- 56:04Speaker 1: it was?
- 56:05Speaker 5: You know, I think midway through the year you started
- 56:08Speaker 5: to feel there's something special going on. Offense was kind
- 56:10Speaker 5: of hitting our stride. The end of the defense. We
- 56:12Speaker 5: had a top five defense that year. We had talent
- 56:14Speaker 5: across the board, We had the right veterans on the
- 56:16Speaker 5: right spot. There was great leadership on that team, so
- 56:20Speaker 5: you kind of saw I think early on we didn't know,
- 56:22Speaker 5: you know, we we we're one on one coming back
- 56:25Speaker 5: from a tough loss at Kansas City playing the Giants.
- 56:29Speaker 5: We end up kicking a sixty one yard walk off
- 56:31Speaker 5: field goal to beat the Giants and struggle our way
- 56:34Speaker 5: to two and one at the time.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Jake Elliott Jake Elliott.
- 56:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:37Speaker 5: So so within from there is when we kind of
- 56:40Speaker 5: get hot and we kind of start beating up on teams,
- 56:42Speaker 5: and that's when you start getting into you know, you
- 56:44Speaker 5: look back at it, and we were beating teams pretty good,
- 56:46Speaker 5: pretty handily, which doesn't happen much in the NFL. So
- 56:49Speaker 5: you started thinking, yeah, you know, we might be pretty
- 56:51Speaker 5: good here, and we've got our showdown with the Rams.
- 56:54Speaker 5: The Rams are you know, coming out like Gangbusters early on,
- 56:57Speaker 5: and I think that was Sean's first year and my
- 57:00Speaker 5: brother's on staff there, and we go out there and
- 57:02Speaker 5: play those guys in just a battle, lose Carson in
- 57:05Speaker 5: the game, Nick gets us through, get the win, clinch
- 57:07Speaker 5: the division. But then you're like, all right, things are
- 57:10Speaker 5: going well, well we just lost the MVP candle, Now
- 57:13Speaker 5: where is it going to go? So it was, you know,
- 57:15Speaker 5: there was kind of the ebbs and flows throughout the seat.
- 57:16Speaker 5: I think We're the first ever one seed to be
- 57:18Speaker 5: an underdog in the second round.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Of playoffs against Falcons.
- 57:23Speaker 5: So I don't know. There were times where he felt
- 57:25Speaker 5: like we might be really good. Then you lose your quarterback,
- 57:27Speaker 5: then you lose Jason Peters, then you lose Darren. I
- 57:29Speaker 5: mean it was just kind of there was enough ebbs
- 57:31Speaker 5: and flows that kind of kept us on our toes
- 57:33Speaker 5: and which probably ultimately got us over the hump. There
- 57:36Speaker 5: was never letting your foot off the gas.
- 57:38Speaker 1: Carson Wentz, I mean, such an interesting figure right now.
- 57:40Speaker 1: I don't think he's even on a team at the moment.
- 57:42Speaker 1: I've been been checking my phone of the day. But
- 57:44Speaker 1: you coached him in multiple places. The good of Carson Wentz.
- 57:47Speaker 1: If you were to make the case to a coach
- 57:48Speaker 1: who's like, should I bring this guy on? What is
- 57:50Speaker 1: the good of Carson Wentz? As far as if you're
- 57:52Speaker 1: doing a pros and cons and will make the case
- 57:54Speaker 1: for why he's still a viable player in this league.
- 57:57Speaker 5: Well, I mean he's a great athlete, honestly. Now, he
- 58:00Speaker 5: went through a lot of entry and tearing his acl,
- 58:02Speaker 5: had a broken bones, back whatever you know. The next
- 58:05Speaker 5: season has had his share of injuries that I think
- 58:08Speaker 5: a little in a little bit hampered his athleticism. But
- 58:13Speaker 5: you know he's a great athlete. He's incredibly cerebral. He
- 58:16Speaker 5: spends a lot of time, is able to process a
- 58:18Speaker 5: lot of information, has a very aggressive mindset, and the
- 58:20Speaker 5: way he plays wants to push the ball down the
- 58:22Speaker 5: field and then he'll lay it on the line for
- 58:24Speaker 5: his team. I think you know he brings a physical
- 58:27Speaker 5: aspect now I think at times that hinders him, you know,
- 58:30Speaker 5: willing to let go of play. But you know, as
- 58:33Speaker 5: far as a teammate and a guy you're coaching, and
- 58:35Speaker 5: a guy that will put it out their first team
- 58:36Speaker 5: all the time, you know that's what you're asking for.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, our last in the rapid fire. And
- 58:41Speaker 1: it's more of a philosophical question and a message to
- 58:44Speaker 1: young coaches out there. You said it. You were living
- 58:46Speaker 1: in a basement of your mom's sorority sister and you
- 58:49Speaker 1: are driving yourself to Tulsa and saying, hey, I could
- 58:52Speaker 1: do anything. Would be your message to a young man
- 58:55Speaker 1: or woman leaving college and you know, no job opportunity
- 58:59Speaker 1: in the NFL sitting there waiting for them, but they
- 59:01Speaker 1: say I want to coach football, What would be your
- 59:03Speaker 1: message to that person.
- 59:04Speaker 5: Find a way to get your foot in the door.
- 59:06Speaker 5: At your foot in the door, and then make yourself
- 59:08Speaker 5: as valuable as possible to where when people leave your staff,
- 59:13Speaker 5: you know they have to take you because of the
- 59:15Speaker 5: things you provided, the things you were able to do,
- 59:17Speaker 5: and the staff you're on has to keep you because
- 59:19Speaker 5: they don't want to lose the things you're able to do.
- 59:22Speaker 5: Whatever it may be. You know, I took a lot
- 59:25Speaker 5: of pride and take an initiative, and I did the
- 59:27Speaker 5: job requirement that I was asked to do. And then
- 59:29Speaker 5: I wanted to do. Now, what can I do? How
- 59:31Speaker 5: can I make the offensive coordinator's life easier, the quarterback
- 59:34Speaker 5: coach's life easier, the quarterbacks life easier. What can I
- 59:36Speaker 5: do to provide value? And you know, you can't take
- 59:40Speaker 5: it hard when you throw an idea out there, or
- 59:42Speaker 5: you do something and you don't see the fruits of
- 59:45Speaker 5: it at the time. You know, yeah, that's a good idea,
- 59:47Speaker 5: but we're not going to do it. You know, Okay, great,
- 59:50Speaker 5: you know I researching idea, I brought an idea. It
- 59:52Speaker 5: doesn't fit us right now. That doesn't discourage me from
- 59:56Speaker 5: continuing to try to find ideas, try to find value,
- 59:59Speaker 5: try to push ways to progress the team.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Or push that idea in the future. Right to me,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: that's important. We do this. We do a TV S
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: every day and it's like a young producer comes up.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: It's like I got this idea and we kind of
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: like poop poo it and I'm like, no, no, no,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: that stick with it.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: I like that.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I like that you're thinking of things. That's good.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: Yeah, you're just trying to grow. I mean that's the
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: coolest thing about being in the NFL is it's football
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: twenty four to seven. I mean we are We are
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: constantly watching film, tinkering scheme, stealing ideas, molding things that
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: fit our players, listening to our players. You know, it's
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: a partnership with players, and I think not putting yourself
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: on this pedestal to where nobody else can give you
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: an idea. I mean I will take an idea from
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: anybody at any time that can get us four yards.
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: You know, we're willing to do it four yards. Yeah,
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: that's I mean, we're staying ahead of the change. We
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: get four so so you know that's you kind of
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: got to leave your ego at the door and you're
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: just trying to get better every single day. We tell
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: our players that too, but that's the ultimate goal. It's
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: just I want to continue to grow.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Who's a play call then maybe doesn't get the same
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: credit he might deserve. I mean we always hear about
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Shanahan McVay and even you know, your brother gets a
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: lot of love for some of the stuff you get.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: They do it to. Like, who's someone that you say,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: you know, you should check out with this guy doing
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: because what he does is pretty impressive too.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: You know, I always kind of liked and this isn't
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: just because he's on your podcast, but I always liked
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: kind of what Nate Hackett was doing in Buffalo and
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: Jacksonville when he was doing it originally there and it
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: looked a little different than it does now. You know,
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: obviously you continue to grow in evolve. I like watching
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: Shane Walderton in Seattle. You know those guys are he
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: did a great job interesting.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: You know, Shane's on that whole tree also never gets mentioned.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: He's been with those guys Lafloor and all those guys.
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: Yeah, did a great job, you know, helping put Geno
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: Smith in great positions while keeping their identity of running
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: the football and the things they want to do. So honestly,
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: you know, I'll watch anybody at any time.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I know the goes on.
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's a lot of fun to just see
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: what's going on the leagues in good hands of just
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: I think football is in good hands, just these forward
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: thinking minds, everybody kind of pushing the envelope and compete
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: and do to make football better.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Our last thing, and you know it's for the Jaguars
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: fan specifically, as we get excited for this season, your
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: message to down there in Duval County is what I think.
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: There's a lot to be excited about. You know. Obviously
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: we we have we have the right guy pulling the trigger,
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: and I think that's the biggest thing. You know, we'll
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: go along way, I think with Trevor Lawrence as our leader,
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: uh and and coach Peterson obviously the guy at the
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: front of it all. With those two, I think my
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: message to the Gyro fans were in good hands. You know,
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: just just stick with us, keep showing up. The last
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: two they were essentially playoff games. Titans game in the
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: Charge game. Awesome environment, right, our crowd was as good
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: as any crowd I've ever been in, and so when
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: Duval comes out, it's a it's a pretty special thing
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: in our players feed off it and stick with us.
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: We got the right people leading the charge.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: All right, from the basement of the sorority sister's house
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: to the grunt work under Chip and you know, helping
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: with the Philly Special to now being the offensive coordinator
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: one of the hottest teams. And the sex I say sexy.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: The word sexy makes sense, but you know the one
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: that they very hot pick for this summer. Press Taylor,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: I'm so happy for you to come on the podcast.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Hope you had a good time, and we appreciate you
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: taking the time, especially during your one vacation week when
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: the training camp gets gone.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: I appreciate it. Man, always good.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Talking to awesome stuff. Press Taylor, Jaguars, Oh see on
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: the season. That was great. I'm bringing in our producer,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Aaron wan Kaufman. Aaron, you've been on riding shotguing me
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: for most of these podcasts. There's something that I like.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I smile when I hear I was living in the
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: basement of my mom's sorority sister because she lived near
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Tulsa that I'm like, I love that stuff. I love
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: that and of course he you know, he finds his
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: own way. But pretty cool story at a Press Taylor too.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and especially with last week's too, we have
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: working the enterprise, rent a car and yeah, Brad Holmes
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: living in the one room apartment you know, at the
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: end of the train line. And now you know, Press
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: like going driving all night to get somewhere. He doesn't
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: have an appointment or anything. He's just like, yeah, I'm here.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: He told me to come meet him, and here I
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: am for to talk.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: You know. I started with the special with Press because
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I love that part of the Philadelphia Eagle season and
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: I was obviously coasting Good Morning Football at the time,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: and there was all sorts of coverage about that play,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and like the hours afterwards, I remember talking to someone
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: with the Eagles and they're like, I'm like, where the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: hell did that play come from? And They're like, twenty
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: four year old Press Taylor find him. And I'm like
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: googling who that is and he's in the bottom of
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: the org chart. But like, isn't that a sweet message
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: that like any ideas can come from anywhere And in
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: that case, it was the assistant quarterbacks coach who essentially
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: was basically you know, low level guy at the time,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: but now he's the offensive coordinator of the Jaguars. Yeah.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: I also love him talking about every time you assembled
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: this like new collection of coaches, whether it be offensive
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: or defensive, they're all bringing in influences from the Chip
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: Kelly system, the Andy Reid system, the McVeigh system, and
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: you get like parts of each of them, which is
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: a really fun thing to think of. And none of
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: these coaching staffs are like static and yeah, just the
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: same thing, no matter who's at the head of it.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: So that I loved hearing about that too, and all
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: of the different people he's worked with.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: It's really cool. We're wrapping up two weeks in a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: row of doing Lions GM last week, Jaguars OC this week.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Two teams that have not been on the radar relatively.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: We were a little blip for the Jaguars few years ago.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: But I might pick that as my Super Bowl this year,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Like this is why the NFL is the best. Were
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: in July and I'm talking Jaguars and Lions as a
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Super Bowl pick as a possibility. But you hear from
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: some of the decision makers. You hear from some of
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: the coaches, and it's hard not to kind of take
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: a bite out of that apple and be like, I
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: like where these teams are had at. Young Ascending had
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: a taste of success at the end of last year
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: the Lions and the regular season the Jaguars obviously won
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a playoff game. It's almost here, dude, it is almost here.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: It would be it would be wild for the Kansas
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: City Kansas City's next rival to be the other brother,
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: the other Taylor brother.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: They went from Zach Taylor to all right, this is
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: the season with Peter Schreger. We love you guys listening.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: We're gearing up. Training camp starts soon on behalf of
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Aaron Wan Kauffman are awesome producer, and Jason English and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Grace Fuse and Kurt the great editor, and of course
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: we've got our folks back in LA and we can
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: go down the list, Jason Kleinman doing an awesome job,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: and Meredith Batten and her team at Schneider his squad,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: David Jurenka, who runs the whole show as far as
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: digital goes, and then of course we talk about you guys.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: The listeners keeping this thing going. I feel like I
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: don't want to say it's a cult it's a cult favorite,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: because that means it's a small favorite, and it means
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: that doesn't have a huge audience. But the truth matter
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: is the amount of texts I get based on these interviews,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: whether it be the Kellen Moore, than Daniel Hackett or
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: even the Hankers area in a few weeks ago, got
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: a lot of love, so we'll keep them coming. I
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: love doing it, and we love that you're listening. Tell
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: your friends, subscribe, and let's keep on rocking as the
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: season approaches. The Season with Peter Schrager is a production
