- 0:00Speaker 1: The Force will be with you always.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hell Hello everybody, and welcome back to Star Wars Alliance,
- 0:22Speaker 2: your home on geek first Ultimate Alliance podcast network for
- 0:25Speaker 2: any in all things Star Wars. I'm your host as always,
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's Kat and with me as per usual, it is Clay. Clay,
- 0:34Speaker 2: how are you doing today?
- 0:36Speaker 1: I am doing a lot better now that I'm actually
- 0:40Speaker 1: sitting down here and you know, getting ready to record,
- 0:42Speaker 1: because I just told you right before we started recording,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I have had a hell of a week and it's
- 0:48Speaker 1: only Wednesday, so I am and I know that we'll
- 0:53Speaker 1: kind of get into the nitty gritty of all the
- 0:55Speaker 1: all this news. For those of you who are joining
- 0:59Speaker 1: us of course here on YouTube and or of course
- 1:03Speaker 1: listening to it later on the next day. You have
- 1:07Speaker 1: noticed that we haven't been talking about some of the
- 1:09Speaker 1: biggest news that have hit that has hit the last week.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Of course, we had the interview with Stephen Barnes last week,
- 1:14Speaker 1: so if you haven't listened to that, go back listen
- 1:18Speaker 1: to that great stuff. But yeah, there's a lot of
- 1:22Speaker 1: I wouldn't say controversial topics, but the topics within itself.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'll go ahead and tease one. Now, everything that's going
- 1:31Speaker 1: on with the Ray Skywalker movie and all of that
- 1:34Speaker 1: stuff and where Ray and Daisy Ridley is gonna be
- 1:37Speaker 1: going like that feels like a mess. I can't really
- 1:41Speaker 1: wait to hear your opinion on it. And so yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: it's gonna be really fun tonight.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Just to give y'all a heads up. I never do
- 1:48Speaker 2: show notes for this, but we do have a guest.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But I'm gonna finish the show notes feel first. I
- 1:52Speaker 2: never do show notes. I hate doing show notes. I
- 1:54Speaker 2: literally did laundry. I did four loads of laundry today,
- 1:58Speaker 2: cleaned my daughter's room and put away all her things,
- 2:02Speaker 2: cleaned my laundry room and organized it, and cleaned my
- 2:05Speaker 2: kitchen from top to bottom before I did anything related
- 2:09Speaker 2: to show notes today. That's how bad I hate them.
- 2:12Speaker 2: But they are literally two pages long. So we got
- 2:16Speaker 2: some stuff to talk about. But our guest is Kate Sanchez.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I had to make sure I got it. I'm carerible
- 2:27Speaker 2: at it. Okay, I'm just terrible at Kate, who is
- 2:30Speaker 2: the editor in chief of A but Why though, and
- 2:33Speaker 2: I just lost my intro shpiel. She also podcasts is
- 2:38Speaker 2: a part of the Austin Help Critics Association. And has
- 2:43Speaker 2: been a judge for crunchy Roll Anime Awards four times,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and she writes for several other places as well. But
- 2:49Speaker 2: Kate is here to promote something that was very near
- 2:52Speaker 2: and dear to my heart. I don't write anymore, but
- 2:54Speaker 2: I used to before I got too busy with mom stuff.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But independent media is so important as Google and AI
- 3:05Speaker 2: kind of takes over, supporting your local media is absolutely
- 3:09Speaker 2: important and making sure that the non privileged people of
- 3:16Speaker 2: the Critics Association can still get access because that is
- 3:20Speaker 2: something that is so undervalued, is having a diverse person
- 3:25Speaker 2: be able to ask the questions and they're so ct
- 3:28Speaker 2: How are you doing today?
- 3:30Speaker 3: I'm doing so well, And it means a lot to
- 3:32Speaker 3: me that you kind of gave this feel beforehand, and
- 3:35Speaker 3: because it is I think a lot of people think
- 3:37Speaker 3: about like independent media is the way that a lot
- 3:39Speaker 3: of people first start their journey into any sort of
- 3:42Speaker 3: critic circle. Regardless if you're writing about video games, film TV,
- 3:47Speaker 3: it does not matter like you need that entry point,
- 3:49Speaker 3: and independent Media has been able to provide that for
- 3:51Speaker 3: a lot of people. I am very proud of what
- 3:53Speaker 3: we've been able to do at the site in getting
- 3:55Speaker 3: people access and getting getting those people kind of where
- 3:58Speaker 3: they need to be. Uh So, Yeah, throughout the month
- 4:02Speaker 3: of November, we're running a fundraiser. Essentially, it takes about
- 4:07Speaker 3: three thousand dollars every month for us to pay all
- 4:09Speaker 3: of our writers, because we do believe writers should be paid,
- 4:12Speaker 3: which apparently is a rarity now. And our goal has
- 4:18Speaker 3: been to make sure that, like to us, if we
- 4:21Speaker 3: had to go back to voluntary, that is not staying alive.
- 4:24Speaker 3: That is kind of failing the people who have built
- 4:26Speaker 3: the site into what it is, because it's not just me.
- 4:28Speaker 3: It is every person who has ever published a review,
- 4:30Speaker 3: every person who has ever done an interview, every person
- 4:32Speaker 3: that has ever opened their hearts and poured it out
- 4:35Speaker 3: into the page in an essay. And that's what we
- 4:37Speaker 3: want to do. We are doing this to give back
- 4:39Speaker 3: to people. Just like you said at the top, Google's
- 4:41Speaker 3: AI and search results have really really pushed independent media
- 4:45Speaker 3: into a corner and we're all essentially becoming your local
- 4:49Speaker 3: MPR and asking for help, and it's what we should do.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I think that we have got in very used to
- 4:59Speaker 3: not wanting to invest even just a little bit into
- 5:02Speaker 3: the stuff that we rely on, and that can be
- 5:04Speaker 3: as small as just subscribing to somebody's newsletter, which we
- 5:07Speaker 3: do have, or even just sharing stuff out. We kind
- 5:11Speaker 3: of exist in this ecosystem for the people who read us,
- 5:15Speaker 3: and we're propped up by the people who read us too.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So you can go to but Why the Net, click
- 5:19Speaker 3: the support us button and there's like a links little
- 5:21Speaker 3: donation forward, and if you do want more information, I
- 5:24Speaker 3: have a giant letter to the editor or a letter
- 5:26Speaker 3: from the editor that I wrote when we first started
- 5:29Speaker 3: our donation period that really breaks down what we're raising
- 5:32Speaker 3: money for, why we're in this position, and why we're
- 5:34Speaker 3: asking everybody out there to help.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yes, so we will leave those linked in the podcast
- 5:43Speaker 2: description for you guys, so please go check that out.
- 5:47Speaker 2: It's something that's super important. I was lucky to be
- 5:50Speaker 2: one of the few people that got paid at Full
- 5:53Speaker 2: Circle for editing and for writing, and they tried their
- 5:57Speaker 2: best to do that and ultimately Full Circle kind of
- 6:00Speaker 2: hit hit the same issue. But everybody's kind of like
- 6:04Speaker 2: split in different directions. So if you guys wouldn't mind supporting,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I know you guys do a lot for our podcast
- 6:11Speaker 2: and listening and for the ads and everything. Uh, but again,
- 6:16Speaker 2: would really appreciate if you guys go check the site
- 6:19Speaker 2: out and give the donation link in the letter some views,
- 6:24Speaker 2: So yeah, thank you. Uh, but we are going to
- 6:29Speaker 2: dive on in for this newscast. Did you tweet? I'm
- 6:34Speaker 2: sorry I did.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I literally just s.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Sorry squirrel. Anyways, Okay, so we're gonna hit the newest
- 6:46Speaker 2: news first because we're going to just kind of go
- 6:50Speaker 2: in order things. But this dropped late last night. Ut
- 6:54Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four Disney Apac Content Showcase was revealed
- 6:59Speaker 2: that Star Wars Visions will debut the third volume next year.
- 7:03Speaker 2: It does not state a specific date, but it's just
- 7:06Speaker 2: twenty twenty five. And this is solely Japanese studios, which
- 7:11Speaker 2: I do want to say that I called because of
- 7:13Speaker 2: Star Wars celebration next year. I want to point that out.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But we have new studios. So we have David Production,
- 7:21Speaker 2: Polygon Pictures, Project Studio Q and with Studio and then Anima.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I don't know if that's how you pronounce it, so
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'm sorry, but they are doing a co production with
- 7:32Speaker 2: returning studio Kama Kazi Douga, which was a part of
- 7:35Speaker 2: volume one and they did the duel. Yes, the returning
- 7:40Speaker 2: studios are Kinema Citruska, which was a part of volume
- 7:44Speaker 2: one with the Village Bride, Production Ig which was also
- 7:49Speaker 2: part of Volume one with the Ninth Jedi, and then
- 7:51Speaker 2: Trigger or I think it's actually studio Trigger, but it
- 7:54Speaker 2: was in the article is Trigger and they did volume
- 7:58Speaker 2: one with the Elder and the twenty So what do
- 8:01Speaker 2: y'all think about this? Kate? Why don't you go first?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Because I'm not a big anime person, so like Visions,
- 8:08Speaker 2: maybe some studio Ghibli is all I know?
- 8:10Speaker 3: So the first So I this isn't to disparage the
- 8:15Speaker 3: season two Visions. I thought that that was really good.
- 8:18Speaker 3: I think that there are really great studios there, and
- 8:20Speaker 3: I think one of the important things for me is
- 8:22Speaker 3: like at its core, I love Visions because I think
- 8:25Speaker 3: animation is a medium that deserves more recognition for the storyteller,
- 8:29Speaker 3: like the storytelling it can do. It's not just for kids,
- 8:32Speaker 3: it's for every age. It's a medium, not a genre,
- 8:35Speaker 3: and I think that Visions really highlights that. That being said,
- 8:39Speaker 3: Vision season one I think was an a very important
- 8:42Speaker 3: recognition of what Japanese culture has done for Star Wars
- 8:47Speaker 3: as a property. The majority of the Star Wars storytelling,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and George Lucas has been very upfront by this was
- 8:53Speaker 3: influenced by Korrosawa films. A lot of the Jedi robes
- 8:57Speaker 3: are influenced by Japanese. I'm forgetting the what it is called,
- 9:04Speaker 3: but well.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It's, uh, that's only what I know.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Okay, it's a specific.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Like it's not it's not k it's.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Uh, it's I don't know why it's escaping me. Anyway,
- 9:16Speaker 3: it is it is. It is traditional Japanese dress, and
- 9:19Speaker 3: I think that one of the important things that we
- 9:20Speaker 3: can do, especially when we are watching media go on
- 9:24Speaker 3: for longer, is kind of honor where it started. And
- 9:26Speaker 3: I think that what we saw with Vision season one
- 9:30Speaker 3: was that type of honoring and exploration. I also think
- 9:33Speaker 3: that the first season of Visions was a fantastic primer
- 9:37Speaker 3: into what anime is and can be and what people
- 9:40Speaker 3: can expect because I think that there's kind of a
- 9:43Speaker 3: I don't think I know that there's kind of an
- 9:45Speaker 3: assumption of the stories that anime tells, but it's just
- 9:49Speaker 3: as diverse as any other animated medium. It like anime
- 9:52Speaker 3: just means it comes from Japan, so I I like
- 9:56Speaker 3: to use it. I like to use visions as a
- 9:58Speaker 3: way to really get people in so far as the
- 10:01Speaker 3: studios that are on here, Production ID, Trigger and WIT
- 10:04Speaker 3: are really heavy hitters. David Production did production on Joj's
- 10:09Speaker 3: Bizarre Adventure, which is one of the probably I would
- 10:13Speaker 3: say like it's reached icon status a joke. Everybody knows
- 10:17Speaker 3: a Jojo if you're an anime fan. And Kazakamidoga and
- 10:21Speaker 3: an I mean, they're going to do some great work.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Although I'm blessed familiar with anima and so I think
- 10:26Speaker 3: that like this is a fantastic slate, And all of
- 10:30Speaker 3: these studios, at least from the ones that I know
- 10:32Speaker 3: really well, are creating animations that are wildly different styles
- 10:38Speaker 3: and wildly different core themes. And I think that that's
- 10:41Speaker 3: what's really exciting, because you go from Trigger you have
- 10:45Speaker 3: Cyberpunk Edge Erunners, which I think most people in the
- 10:47Speaker 3: West will know because it was an adaptation of the
- 10:50Speaker 3: video game. But they also did pro Mare Kill a Kill,
- 10:53Speaker 3: some really large titles with did SPAIEX family, which is
- 10:56Speaker 3: probably the biggest crossover for anime into the mainstreamers and
- 11:01Speaker 3: production IG has done a lot of work on partnering
- 11:05Speaker 3: with three D animation houses to really push the what
- 11:09Speaker 3: traditional anime is seen as, which is two D. They've
- 11:13Speaker 3: been doing a lot of work to either support fully
- 11:16Speaker 3: three D rendered studios or start building their own. So
- 11:20Speaker 3: that was a lot of words to say. There is
- 11:22Speaker 3: a lot of diversity here in the representation of art
- 11:25Speaker 3: styles that we're about to see in Star Wars Vision
- 11:27Speaker 3: season three, and I am very excited for it.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you talked about good introductions, like this was probably mine, honestly.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Like again, I've seen like some studio ghibli and then
- 11:42Speaker 2: like a couple like death Note and things like that
- 11:47Speaker 2: sort art online, but like this was like pure introduction.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So I'm very excited, especially with the ninth Jedi production
- 11:56Speaker 2: ig returning and Kinemasiitrius with the Village Bride. Like, I'm
- 12:00Speaker 2: seriously hopeful for some sequels.
- 12:03Speaker 1: What do you think, Clay, I was gonna say, I
- 12:06Speaker 1: think Kate just stole the entire show. By the way,
- 12:11Speaker 1: all of that knowledge of anime. Uh No, But I
- 12:16Speaker 1: agree on everything, Katie. You know, I have been gushing
- 12:22Speaker 1: over Visions ever since it started. I was in love
- 12:25Speaker 1: with the duel. I loved the novel adaptation and continuation
- 12:30Speaker 1: of that world. Studio Trigger being a part of this, again,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I think is just wonderful. Not a whole lot of
- 12:39Speaker 1: people really dug the Twins, but I absolutely loved it.
- 12:44Speaker 2: It was phenomena.
- 12:45Speaker 1: It was so ridiculously like just pure anime stuff. It
- 12:50Speaker 1: was just so people call it weird, like the fact
- 12:52Speaker 1: that there was a lightsaber that was the size of
- 12:54Speaker 1: a planet and all of this su like it's sposed.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Still, it was triggered at its most.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Yes, I absolutely love it. But on the story side,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I am super excited about Production IG because of how
- 13:14Speaker 1: many people wanted a continuation of the Ninth Jedi and
- 13:19Speaker 1: how Studio IG even said like, oh, if we had
- 13:22Speaker 1: the opportunity, we would totally do this, and like to
- 13:27Speaker 1: possibly to even have that small possibility of there being
- 13:30Speaker 1: a continuation of the Ninth Jedi gets me so excited.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And and Okay, I want to agree with you again
- 13:39Speaker 1: that this is a medium. And I've said this plenty
- 13:44Speaker 1: of times, but again it's worth noting while we are
- 13:47Speaker 1: talking about visions, I think that lucasfilm Star Wars and
- 13:52Speaker 1: Disney need to consider bringing animation Star Wars to the
- 13:58Speaker 1: big screen.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that that's one of the things
- 14:03Speaker 3: that has frustrated me. And fun fact, this is the
- 14:06Speaker 3: first time I've talked about Star Wars on a podcast
- 14:08Speaker 3: in a very very long time. So there we go.
- 14:12Speaker 3: But like one of the things that like, I really
- 14:14Speaker 3: wish you did, because I mean, I love the Clone Wars,
- 14:16Speaker 3: I love everything that Filoni has done, but it's the
- 14:21Speaker 3: exact same art style. Not to say that it isn't
- 14:24Speaker 3: worthy of being on the big screen, but I think
- 14:26Speaker 3: what we've seen with the explosion of visions is that
- 14:29Speaker 3: there are so many intricate worlds that we can see
- 14:31Speaker 3: brought to life. And I think that as we have
- 14:35Speaker 3: seen some of like the highest grossing anime movies that
- 14:38Speaker 3: have ever released have been released in the last four years,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and we are just seeing more money get thrown into them.
- 14:44Speaker 3: And whether you go for a Japanese animated series or
- 14:48Speaker 3: a movie, which I think they should do, and I
- 14:51Speaker 3: actually think projection IG's Ninth Jedi and an Expiration that
- 14:54Speaker 3: would be a best feast for that I wouldn't hate
- 14:57Speaker 3: any other, uh any other or just feature film that
- 15:01Speaker 3: they make fully animation. I think that when you I
- 15:08Speaker 3: think that Filoni's animated series tell a much more adult
- 15:12Speaker 3: story than we give it credit for because of how
- 15:14Speaker 3: it looks. But I will say if we kind of
- 15:19Speaker 3: invest in a more, I don't want to say grittier,
- 15:22Speaker 3: but just like a More. It feels weird calling it
- 15:28Speaker 3: more adult because like those Clone Wars go deep, they
- 15:31Speaker 3: hit are I do. But like something that visually you
- 15:34Speaker 3: can sell to adults, I think I'll say that something
- 15:36Speaker 3: you can visually sell to adults, I think it'll be
- 15:39Speaker 3: really good. I would also like to point out with
- 15:42Speaker 3: a pro with Studio Q, they have worked on Eureka, Sevan, Evangelian,
- 15:50Speaker 3: Darlene and there. I think that we are going to
- 15:54Speaker 3: get a Star Wars Mac and that is what I want.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I really hope. So, but not only that, so I
- 16:04Speaker 1: believe it was Evangelian. Recently, I want to say, in
- 16:10Speaker 1: the last three or four years, have has really popped
- 16:13Speaker 1: off again for sure because.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Of Thrice upon a Time. Yeah, so they did a
- 16:17Speaker 3: re release of the rebuilds. YEP.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I think that this is going to be really good
- 16:23Speaker 1: for Disney. Plus, I think there will be even if
- 16:26Speaker 1: it's for a short time for the release of Visions,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I think you will see an increase of those subscriptions
- 16:33Speaker 1: to watch this show.
- 16:36Speaker 3: No we will, Yeah, for sure.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I don't have anything to add.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It's okay. Like Katy is all in on on the
- 16:51Speaker 1: nerdim of books and so I give her that and
- 16:55Speaker 1: that's totally fine. I was raised off of anime. Uh.
- 17:00Speaker 1: The very first anime that I ever watched was Dragon
- 17:02Speaker 1: Ball Z and so it's like my favorite of all time.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But yeah, like it is, it is a culture, and
- 17:09Speaker 1: so I think that just like how Katie, we have
- 17:14Speaker 1: multiple conversations in the guachat about directors and writers and
- 17:19Speaker 1: cinematographers and everything else when it comes to anime. These
- 17:24Speaker 1: studios are the big ones that people talk about when
- 17:29Speaker 1: it comes to anime fans. It's like, oh, well, who's
- 17:32Speaker 1: what production is doing this new anime that's about to
- 17:34Speaker 1: come out. Oh there's an adaptation of this, Well who's
- 17:37Speaker 1: doing it? Like that's the big talk of the town
- 17:39Speaker 1: in the anime community. So having these bigger names is
- 17:43Speaker 1: going to make a big pop when it finds comes.
- 17:48Speaker 2: For sure, when do y'all think this will drop? Are
- 17:51Speaker 2: we thinking another May fourth release window right after celebration
- 17:56Speaker 2: where they can do all the panels and stuff.
- 17:59Speaker 3: So I think it will try to align itself with
- 18:03Speaker 3: the lease packed anime season, because I think that that's
- 18:06Speaker 3: what ended up happening last time too, So I think
- 18:09Speaker 3: we'll probably be looking at a winter or spring release
- 18:13Speaker 3: because fall is usually where the heavy hitters of every
- 18:15Speaker 3: season come through.
- 18:17Speaker 2: So that makes sense.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I didn't even consider that.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I can sign with that.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, y'all, we are going to hit our
- 18:24Speaker 2: first ad break and we will be right back in
- 18:27Speaker 2: three two one. We talked about how things are more
- 18:32Speaker 2: adult with the visions things, So let's go to and
- 18:35Speaker 2: Or because that is probably the most adult show that
- 18:40Speaker 2: is on Disney Plus now that Accolade is gone. So
- 18:45Speaker 2: we have an official release date April twenty second, twenty
- 18:50Speaker 2: twenty five. Obviously, going back to the twelfth episode count
- 18:57Speaker 2: to date, it releases two days after Celebration ends, so
- 19:01Speaker 2: more than likely we're gonna see another preview showing for
- 19:05Speaker 2: Celebration like Oh Wei Wan Kenobi did, And there was
- 19:09Speaker 2: actually eleven seconds of teaser footage in the coming in
- 19:15Speaker 2: twenty twenty five Disbey Plus did either of y'all watch that.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I saw it, but I was only able to watch
- 19:26Speaker 1: it like as a preview. I didn't actually click into
- 19:29Speaker 1: the video. I didn't hear any of the audio. I
- 19:31Speaker 1: just saw it. From what I saw, it looks nice.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I think the only thing that really popped off on
- 19:38Speaker 1: the timeline was Diego Luna's new what are the what
- 19:44Speaker 1: are the cool kids say these days? The cool drip
- 19:47Speaker 1: is what they say. My God, I like this code.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I like it. I do like was this already confirm
- 20:00Speaker 1: or did they confirm it during all of like the
- 20:02Speaker 1: news and stuff that this is going to be like
- 20:06Speaker 1: every episode is going to be like how many months?
- 20:11Speaker 2: So it's three, So it's three episodes per year. So
- 20:15Speaker 2: we're starting in for.
- 20:17Speaker 4: A b y.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Then we get three to one and we leave right in.
- 20:22Speaker 2: So at the end of episode twelve for season two,
- 20:25Speaker 2: Cassine is going to be getting on the ship to
- 20:27Speaker 2: go meet his contact that we see him kill and row. Okay,
- 20:32Speaker 2: so that's kind of how they're going to lead up
- 20:34Speaker 2: to everything.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I like that.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, it makes sense, and this is something that
- 20:39Speaker 2: we've known, I think since season one premiered and they
- 20:43Speaker 2: switched from five seasons to two seasons. They wanted to
- 20:48Speaker 2: kind of cover his introduction into the rebellion with season one,
- 20:51Speaker 2: but then kind of lead up to rogue one with
- 20:53Speaker 2: season two. So that's kind of where we're got. I've
- 20:57Speaker 2: got the teaser footage here. Thanks to Start Wars all
- 21:00Speaker 2: chron we don't have to search through the video.
- 21:03Speaker 1: So here we go.
- 21:05Speaker 2: So we've got stormtroopers. She's back. I can't remember her name.
- 21:11Speaker 2: The tie Defenders there, mm hmm.
- 21:16Speaker 1: So there. The talk of the town, Yeah, was the
- 21:19Speaker 1: fact that this scene right here, Thank you exactly for
- 21:22Speaker 1: for stopping it. The uh, the tall grass. Some people
- 21:28Speaker 1: are calling them cornfields. Uh. A lot of people think
- 21:33Speaker 1: this is Lothal from uh from Star Wars Rebels. I
- 21:43Speaker 1: think they could be correct. I've heard other people theorize
- 21:50Speaker 1: that it was uh oh shoot Dantine. Yes, it was
- 21:56Speaker 1: the other planet that was rumored. I would I think
- 22:02Speaker 1: it would be nice to see dance Wine because I
- 22:04Speaker 1: don't think technically we have seen dant Wine on screen. Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I don't think we have either. It was mentioned because
- 22:16Speaker 2: Leya brings it up in the interrogation with mof Tarkin,
- 22:20Speaker 2: and so she says, oh, there was a rebel base
- 22:22Speaker 2: on Dantueen, knowing the rebels have left Dantweene at this
- 22:24Speaker 2: point and are on Yeah, then so I danta Wine
- 22:29Speaker 2: could be a cool tie over lo Thal would be
- 22:33Speaker 2: cool because you have the live action cast that you
- 22:36Speaker 2: could kind of lean on from Ahsoka to kind of
- 22:40Speaker 2: if you wanted to cross over with things. But I
- 22:43Speaker 2: don't think Tony Gilroy is that kind of guy something.
- 22:45Speaker 2: And this is Dantuene, if it's a planet that we know,
- 22:50Speaker 2: putting that out there, but I mean to get teaser
- 22:55Speaker 2: footage at this point where Skeleton Crew hasn't even premiered.
- 23:00Speaker 2: It's something amazing from Lucasfolm that I didn't think was
- 23:03Speaker 2: possible that they could do. Like what the heck was
- 23:06Speaker 2: not expected?
- 23:08Speaker 1: Well was wasn't the meme going on during uh yeah
- 23:15Speaker 1: D twenty three was that they were I forgot what
- 23:20Speaker 1: the what the exact actual meme was, but the phrasing
- 23:24Speaker 1: was like, I isn't that illegal. I didn't know you
- 23:27Speaker 1: could do that when Marvel shared all their trailers and
- 23:31Speaker 1: teasers because Star Wars for some reason, like Star Wars
- 23:35Speaker 1: thinks they hold the deepest, darkest secrets of the of
- 23:38Speaker 1: the universe, and it's just like, guys, it's just Star Wars.
- 23:43Speaker 1: There wouldn't be so much controversy and everything else if
- 23:45Speaker 1: you were just out in the open and like hyped
- 23:48Speaker 1: everybody up yep, the way you're supposed to, like every
- 23:51Speaker 1: other studio.
- 23:52Speaker 3: I so I think that Star Wars, Rumor Mills and
- 23:59Speaker 3: Scooper are worse than any other one on other ones
- 24:03Speaker 3: on the Internet that I have had to deal with,
- 24:06Speaker 3: And I think that that is probably why they do
- 24:08Speaker 3: a lot of it. But I also know that, like
- 24:10Speaker 3: from a marketing campaign, they already know that they're going
- 24:13Speaker 3: to be able to get a lot of people in
- 24:15Speaker 3: the door. I think what they do by holding stuff
- 24:18Speaker 3: back is just to make people rabid for any scrap
- 24:22Speaker 3: because then when it's out, it's like we are here
- 24:25Speaker 3: talking about eleven seconds that but Eiser had to do nothing.
- 24:34Speaker 3: But it's been their marketing strategy for Marvel too, like
- 24:37Speaker 3: for the most part. But I also think they're also
- 24:39Speaker 3: finding themselves in a precarious position where they have had
- 24:43Speaker 3: to cancel and restart and push back and find new
- 24:46Speaker 3: directions and having people leave their ecosystem. More broadly that
- 24:51Speaker 3: I think the sooner they come out with stuff after
- 24:54Speaker 3: issues with obviously the recuts for trailers like World one
- 24:58Speaker 3: and everything like that, I think they are hesitant because
- 25:02Speaker 3: they have kind of garnered a fairly bad reputation on
- 25:05Speaker 3: having stuff out there before it got ready, and now
- 25:09Speaker 3: I think they kind of overcorrected in the other way.
- 25:13Speaker 3: That's at least my two cents.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So yeah, no, it makes total sense for sure.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and like there really is nothing in the footage
- 25:22Speaker 2: other than the picture of the three. I can't even
- 25:26Speaker 2: remember her name. I think it's like it starts with
- 25:28Speaker 2: a beat. Oh my gosh, it's gonna drive me insane,
- 25:32Speaker 2: but like that's pretty much it.
- 25:35Speaker 3: And then and so yes, yeah, like if you were
- 25:39Speaker 3: curious and or is still hot?
- 25:41Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right, So.
- 25:48Speaker 1: It's her name, Bix.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Thank you, good job.
- 25:53Speaker 2: So the title has been altered to and or a
- 25:57Speaker 2: Star Wars Story. What do y'all think about them bringing
- 25:59Speaker 2: the Star Wars Story end cap title back?
- 26:08Speaker 1: You want to say something, Kate, what's going on?
- 26:11Speaker 3: All of the Star Wars titles are ridiculously stupid and
- 26:15Speaker 3: they make it very hard to write about them.
- 26:18Speaker 2: It's such a bad it's so badd Like I.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Journalists people, it's like like, so it's that part.
- 26:33Speaker 3: But I also think that there is an unnecessary burden
- 26:36Speaker 3: that they put on their properties but explicitly tying them
- 26:40Speaker 3: together in this way. I actually think that that's why
- 26:42Speaker 3: Vision succeeds so much, because it's not bearing the weight
- 26:46Speaker 3: of anything else in or around it. And I think
- 26:49Speaker 3: that like when you immediate, like I think the Star
- 26:52Speaker 3: Wars story label kind of hurt things. I think Skywalker
- 26:56Speaker 3: saga hurt things. I think there is you can just
- 27:00Speaker 3: release things and then they're released.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And we have a very strong opinion about the Skywalker
- 27:08Speaker 1: saga and how we can never leave the Skywalker saga.
- 27:13Speaker 1: But I agree, I one agree with that take. I
- 27:17Speaker 1: think that if Star Wars was just Star Wars, it
- 27:21Speaker 1: could broaden so much. You could have so many different
- 27:25Speaker 1: storytellers telling different parts of this vast universe, but they're
- 27:31Speaker 1: so zoned in on telling this one odyssey is just like,
- 27:37Speaker 1: we're done with that. It was great, we all had fun.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm okay with like going back every once in a while,
- 27:44Speaker 1: but let's try new things. Let's have fun with it.
- 27:47Speaker 1: And you're right, I think Visions does that very very well.
- 27:51Speaker 1: The fact that like a Star Wars story, I don't
- 27:57Speaker 1: know if I have ever seen I'm gonna try to
- 28:03Speaker 1: not be super like dramatic about this, but I don't
- 28:08Speaker 1: think I have seen a side of Twitter get so
- 28:12Speaker 1: triggered so quickly, and I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I think,
- 28:19Speaker 1: for one, going back on it kind of tells us, well,
- 28:25Speaker 1: did you make a mistake by like getting rid of
- 28:28Speaker 1: the Star Wars story for everything else? And so it's
- 28:31Speaker 1: a very confusing, like conversation with the audience here. So
- 28:36Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's okay when it comes to
- 28:42Speaker 1: it being attached to and or, but again it's just
- 28:45Speaker 1: like where's a Star Wars story on everything else? Like
- 28:48Speaker 1: are we gonna see Ahsoka you know, season season two
- 28:54Speaker 1: a Star Wars story when it releases, or Mandalorian and
- 28:58Speaker 1: Grogu a Star Wars story like they haven't announced yet,
- 29:02Speaker 1: but I could see it happening.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Oh now that's a good point. I thought the Star
- 29:10Speaker 2: Wars story attags were really I was able to separate
- 29:15Speaker 2: kind of your standalone stuff when they first dropped with
- 29:19Speaker 2: Solo and Rogue one, But kind of now that you've
- 29:23Speaker 2: dropped it, I don't really like bringing back because, like
- 29:25Speaker 2: you said, like okay, is this our way of saying like, Okay,
- 29:29Speaker 2: we like this, but we don't like this kind of
- 29:31Speaker 2: sam like we're putting this out because otherwise we lose
- 29:35Speaker 2: so much money, but it's not attached kind of thing.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's weird. I just think it's I think that
- 29:48Speaker 3: they've found themselves in a situation. So how do I
- 29:52Speaker 3: say this? One of the reasons I haven't talked about
- 29:55Speaker 3: Star Wars, Like on podcast, I tapped out there's just
- 29:59Speaker 3: there's so much and there's too much in a way
- 30:01Speaker 3: that it's just like it is in the same way
- 30:04Speaker 3: that I tapped out from the MCU. It was like, Oh,
- 30:06Speaker 3: this thing that I loved deeply is just now become
- 30:09Speaker 3: my homework. And I will I will, I will lock
- 30:11Speaker 3: in for and or season two because that is my boy.
- 30:14Speaker 3: But I think that like they have expanded everything so
- 30:19Speaker 3: much that I think that now that they did and
- 30:22Speaker 3: we're having issues, and Disney Plus has had issues with
- 30:25Speaker 3: viewership across all of its properties consistently. It's an expensive
- 30:29Speaker 3: platform for not a lot of new content, which I
- 30:32Speaker 3: think is partly driving that. But I think what they're
- 30:34Speaker 3: trying to do is I think they're trying to like
- 30:36Speaker 3: kind of pull in the arms that they stretched out
- 30:39Speaker 3: a little bit and like just put Star Wars story
- 30:42Speaker 3: back because then they can keep things smaller from like
- 30:45Speaker 3: a financial perspective, but I think that it's ultimately going
- 30:48Speaker 3: to hurt them in the long run because they are
- 30:51Speaker 3: like Disney has been so concerned about cohesive stories and
- 30:55Speaker 3: cohesive narratives and cohesive this cohesive that regardless of the
- 30:58Speaker 3: property that they own, our doing it too. That I
- 31:01Speaker 3: think they're kind of just putting themselves into a corner
- 31:03Speaker 3: where it's like you gotta watch it out, you gotta
- 31:06Speaker 3: watch out because it's too much, I think, and I
- 31:09Speaker 3: think it's it's too weird of an organization for me,
- 31:13Speaker 3: Like looking on the outside of somebody who's been a
- 31:15Speaker 3: bit out of Star Wars four for a couple of
- 31:18Speaker 3: years now, I don't really understand it. I don't understand
- 31:22Speaker 3: the choices. It's it's messy. It doesn't have to be messy,
- 31:26Speaker 3: and they're making it messy.
- 31:28Speaker 2: It really should not be messy. Like I know, I'm
- 31:31Speaker 2: like deeplys in all the contents and everything, but like,
- 31:35Speaker 2: it doesn't it does not have to be this messy
- 31:39Speaker 2: at all.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It's it's a problem. It's a problem that I have
- 31:42Speaker 1: with a lot of franchises is the fact that like
- 31:46Speaker 1: we as an audience are very simple and yes, as
- 31:53Speaker 1: and I apologize if this offends anybody, but as humans,
- 31:57Speaker 1: we're kind of dumb. It's just like, give us something
- 31:59Speaker 1: big and shiny and action and like loud colors, like boom, Okay,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you grabbed our attention. Like it's you don't have to
- 32:09Speaker 1: do a lot. You don't You don't have to do
- 32:12Speaker 1: a whole lot when it comes to the entertainment of
- 32:14Speaker 1: your fan base. And I genuinely think that a lot
- 32:20Speaker 1: of these studios think way too hard to get the
- 32:26Speaker 1: money they're already guaranteed like to get, like that's the
- 32:30Speaker 1: one thing for me always. So you're infuriating. It's like, oh,
- 32:35Speaker 1: we're gonna change this thing that has been working for
- 32:38Speaker 1: so long to grab more fans that we know that
- 32:43Speaker 1: we're not gonna grab, but we're gonna try to anyway.
- 32:45Speaker 1: It's just like you didn't really have to, but I
- 32:49Speaker 1: get it because you guys are kind of greedy. You
- 32:52Speaker 1: just want more money.
- 32:53Speaker 3: But like capitalism, baby, ye yeah.
- 32:58Speaker 1: It's just the way it is.
- 33:01Speaker 2: So with the season two announcement and everything, they did
- 33:06Speaker 2: also drop the synopsis, which I realized I forgot to
- 33:09Speaker 2: copy paste into the Google doc, but I have the
- 33:13Speaker 2: screenshot right here, so it says and Or, the acclaimed thriller,
- 33:16Speaker 2: returns for its long awaited conclusion. The twelve episodes of
- 33:20Speaker 2: season two will carry the story of Cassian Andor in
- 33:22Speaker 2: the emerging rebel alliance over the climactic four years that
- 33:26Speaker 2: lead to the discovery of the Death Star. In the
- 33:28Speaker 2: events of Rogue one, Season one followed Cassian's reluctant journey
- 33:32Speaker 2: from cynical nobody to revolutionary volunteer, and Or. Season two
- 33:37Speaker 2: will see him transform from soldier to leader to hero
- 33:40Speaker 2: on the way to his epic destiny. From the very
- 33:43Speaker 2: first scene, cassian story has activated an ever widening ensemble
- 33:48Speaker 2: of allies and enemies. Season two will see these relationships
- 33:52Speaker 2: intensify as the horizon of galactic war draws near. Everyone
- 33:56Speaker 2: will be tested, and as the stakes rise, the betrayals,
- 33:59Speaker 2: sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound. Who will live
- 34:03Speaker 2: to see their dream realized? Who will realize what that
- 34:06Speaker 2: dream costs. So there's kind of the summary that basically says, oh, hey,
- 34:12Speaker 2: this was a great show. Here's nothing.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Well. I think, I mean, we've we've said it over
- 34:23Speaker 1: and over again. I think that there was a very
- 34:27Speaker 1: big pop on and Or that they weren't entirely anticipating,
- 34:34Speaker 1: but at the same time, just like Kate said, every
- 34:37Speaker 1: single show has had a really hard time to be,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, successful on Disney Plus. Katie, we had said it.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I think it was not last week, but the week prior.
- 34:49Speaker 1: We've talked about how and Or actually ended up being
- 34:52Speaker 1: on Freeform. It was either free Form or FX, one
- 34:56Speaker 1: of the two the first three episodes trying to people
- 35:00Speaker 1: to subscribe to Disney Plus. And it's I don't know
- 35:07Speaker 1: what they need to do as far as their marketing
- 35:09Speaker 1: team goes, because prior to COVID, I feel like the
- 35:14Speaker 1: biggest conversations was the fact that Disney had the best
- 35:17Speaker 1: marketing in all of the world and it's just for
- 35:21Speaker 1: some reason not working out for their platform. And unfortunately,
- 35:26Speaker 1: it feels like for a lot it's the like it's
- 35:32Speaker 1: being targeted. For sure, I'm sure it's being targeted towards
- 35:36Speaker 1: Star Wars. A lot of the hate for the less
- 35:38Speaker 1: marketed stuff, and that is from fans, and then the
- 35:43Speaker 1: stupid feuds between Marvel and Star Wars, and it's all
- 35:48Speaker 1: the same nerd and stuff. Guys like, get over it.
- 35:50Speaker 1: But but yeah, I think that something needs to change
- 35:55Speaker 1: with how they market Star Wars. I don't know how
- 35:57Speaker 1: that works, so I to.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Push back a little, not necessarily pushing back on the idea,
- 36:04Speaker 3: because I think marketing in and of itself has gone
- 36:07Speaker 3: into the can I guess on here?
- 36:09Speaker 2: Yes?
- 36:10Speaker 3: Oh, it's all gone into the shitter, ultimately across every
- 36:14Speaker 3: single streaming platform because we're in an age of social
- 36:16Speaker 3: media where everything is made to go viral, everything is
- 36:20Speaker 3: made to have people market your stuff for free. Essentially
- 36:24Speaker 3: that that is just what happens. And I think Disney
- 36:26Speaker 3: has been the biggest, the biggest criminal of this when
- 36:30Speaker 3: it comes to ensuring that their shows get seen, because
- 36:34Speaker 3: they rely a lot on both positive and negative discourse
- 36:38Speaker 3: around it to push up numbers, and they stoke those
- 36:40Speaker 3: flames and they do it consistently. But they're not the
- 36:43Speaker 3: only platform that does it. Netflix does it, Paramount does
- 36:46Speaker 3: it a lot of the times, like everything that we
- 36:48Speaker 3: say is oh why did I why didn't I know
- 36:51Speaker 3: that the show came out? And a lot of it
- 36:53Speaker 3: is because they rely on algorithms to put content in
- 36:57Speaker 3: front of you that you already get a click, and
- 36:58Speaker 3: then they also rely on the social media system ecosystem
- 37:03Speaker 3: to put it in front of you, so they don't
- 37:04Speaker 3: spend money on it. So I don't think that they
- 37:07Speaker 3: have ever particularly been good marketers so much as they
- 37:11Speaker 3: were marketers without a streaming service at first. So when
- 37:15Speaker 3: studios had to market their own products on other platforms,
- 37:18Speaker 3: they had to put in a much more concerted effort
- 37:20Speaker 3: to make sure that it was getting seen in other
- 37:22Speaker 3: places or even on network television, because that's not something
- 37:25Speaker 3: that you're always completely plugged into. You move into the
- 37:27Speaker 3: streaming ecosystem, everybody has it on their phone, everybody has
- 37:30Speaker 3: it on their tablet, on their TV. They can kind
- 37:32Speaker 3: of serve it to you whenever you want, so they've
- 37:37Speaker 3: kind of divested from spending that money. So I wouldn't
- 37:41Speaker 3: say that it's necessarily a Disney problem so much as
- 37:43Speaker 3: it's indicative of the larger issue. I think Disney's larger
- 37:48Speaker 3: problem with people not watching their shows is that they
- 37:50Speaker 3: actually don't have a stable ecosystem of consistent output. They
- 37:55Speaker 3: don't have a lot of new content on their platform,
- 37:57Speaker 3: and a streaming service ultimately only serves you if you're
- 38:01Speaker 3: watching stuff on there consistently, so a lot of people
- 38:04Speaker 3: may just wait until they get like, what a week
- 38:06Speaker 3: off in December for Christmas or a fall holiday, and
- 38:10Speaker 3: then subscribe, watch everything you close it out. There are
- 38:13Speaker 3: fewer and fewer people relying on weekly television because they
- 38:17Speaker 3: just can't afford all the streaming services. And when you
- 38:19Speaker 3: don't put out as much shows as say Netflix, you're
- 38:24Speaker 3: just not going to see it. I mean, I use
- 38:28Speaker 3: somebody else's Disney Bundle for ESPN and Hulu and Disney,
- 38:33Speaker 3: and I would say that I'm consistently on Hulu more
- 38:36Speaker 3: so because they're putting out a more diverse array of content.
- 38:39Speaker 3: If Disney Plus here looked like it did internationally, then
- 38:44Speaker 3: I think you wouldn't be having the same problem because
- 38:46Speaker 3: people would be going to Disney Plus for anime, for
- 38:48Speaker 3: international shows, for the consistent stream of output from FX
- 38:52Speaker 3: as well as Hulu originals. And I think that that
- 38:55Speaker 3: is where the issue lies for Disney Plus. I don't
- 39:00Speaker 3: necessarily think that it is that people don't want to
- 39:02Speaker 3: watch these shows. I think is that people are even
- 39:05Speaker 3: more limited incomes, which you've seen. People have less buying
- 39:08Speaker 3: power now than they did pre COVID or even the
- 39:11Speaker 3: start of COVID. So they're going to slash it for
- 39:13Speaker 3: Netflix because Netflix can give them more or they'll go
- 39:16Speaker 3: to Hulu.
- 39:17Speaker 1: And I'm just going to say, Disney, You're lucky that
- 39:21Speaker 1: I had it on automatic payment, because you stole one
- 39:25Speaker 1: hundred and seventy five dollars for me annual when I
- 39:32Speaker 1: that's what bog was my mind. They gave me three
- 39:35Speaker 1: years for eighty nine dollars and for one year I
- 39:38Speaker 1: have to pay one hundred and seventy five Like that's
- 39:41Speaker 1: some bs. I am still to this day pissed off
- 39:45Speaker 1: about how they charge so much after they gave me
- 39:49Speaker 1: three years for less than one hundred dollars.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Ridiculous. Ridiculous yep.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I think the only streaming service you can get now
- 39:57Speaker 3: for really cheap are going to be like your international
- 40:00Speaker 3: ones that do like just K dramas or Shutter A
- 40:05Speaker 3: shutter an AMC plus are probably the cheaper ones, but
- 40:08Speaker 3: everything else is like ridiculously expensive.
- 40:11Speaker 2: So it's so bad.
- 40:13Speaker 1: It's getting everything is I think at least seventeen plus.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so yeah, yeah, it's insane.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I need to go through and cancel some because
- 40:23Speaker 2: you get in the habit of like it's just automatically charges.
- 40:26Speaker 2: It is so bad.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Look, man, those Rocket money ads actually like like they help.
- 40:32Speaker 3: They help you know how many things that you actually
- 40:35Speaker 3: subscribe to that you don't watch.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I will admit I got into like I saw the
- 40:43Speaker 1: Rocket Money ad and I was like, all right, it
- 40:45Speaker 1: got me, let's do it. And then I saw everything.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I was like, oh crap. And I was warned about
- 40:51Speaker 1: Disney Plus. I will say that I was warned about
- 40:54Speaker 1: an upcoming large fee and I was like, oh, that's
- 40:58Speaker 1: rent and it's like, hey, I just got an email
- 41:00Speaker 1: from Disney Plus, what is this? Oh God, Like, That's
- 41:04Speaker 1: that's how I learned. And so now I will make
- 41:08Speaker 1: sure to actually open my notifications for Rocket Money.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Now apparently I need to do that because I just
- 41:15Speaker 2: always like scroll past those, So I need to do that,
- 41:17Speaker 2: all right. So uh with returning back to Yavin for
- 41:24Speaker 2: and Or, Tony Gilroy actually talked about it and said, he,
- 41:28Speaker 2: I mean, we have to end up in Yavin, right,
- 41:30Speaker 2: so we'll tell the story of Yavin. No one has
- 41:33Speaker 2: quite dealt with Yab in the way we will be
- 41:35Speaker 2: doing it. And this excites me because Tony Gilroy is like, yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 2: I don't really care what else is going on and
- 41:42Speaker 2: Star Wars, but also he has so much respect for
- 41:47Speaker 2: what else is going on with Star Wars, Like yes,
- 41:51Speaker 2: it's actually a little insane because he's like I don't care,
- 41:54Speaker 2: like I'm not gonna do cameos. But then like legitimately
- 41:57Speaker 2: the guy is like, got it down.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I'm gonna say something very controversial. Just the
- 42:06Speaker 1: way you spoke that quote, I was like, oh god,
- 42:09Speaker 1: why does this sound like Trump is saying this. It's like,
- 42:13Speaker 1: I mean, we have to give up at Yevin, right,
- 42:17Speaker 1: so we'll tell the story at Yevin. No one is
- 42:20Speaker 1: quite told dealt with Yavin the way we have.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Oh my god, stop it.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Sorry, it's like.
- 42:28Speaker 3: That, don't don't do that. Don't don't do that.
- 42:31Speaker 1: That was terrified. I was absolutely terrifying. I'm so sorry.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Oh god, no. But I am also excited that we
- 42:44Speaker 1: are going back to Yavin. I truly am. I think Gilroy,
- 42:50Speaker 1: like as somebody who has never really followed Gilroy outside
- 42:55Speaker 1: of his Star Wars stuff, like I I trust him
- 43:00Speaker 1: with almost anything. Now. Just with the season one of
- 43:03Speaker 1: and Or, I really enjoyed Rogue one outside of the
- 43:08Speaker 1: Darth Vaders seeing people. Okay, I know that's always.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Darth Vader didn't belong in that movie anyway, he didn't.
- 43:16Speaker 2: He didn't. It was great, but it was still good.
- 43:19Speaker 3: It was great, It was a good scene, but it
- 43:21Speaker 3: didn't need to be there.
- 43:23Speaker 1: It was great, it needed it needed to Katie. Because
- 43:27Speaker 1: of our lightsaber problem, we talked about it all the time.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Star Wars projects without a lightsaber don't do as great
- 43:34Speaker 1: with projects that do have lightsabers. It's unfortunate, but the truth.
- 43:40Speaker 2: A wrong.
- 43:41Speaker 3: That is fair.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I agree with that, say totally fair.
- 43:44Speaker 3: I will say so, I've actually been a really big
- 43:49Speaker 3: fan of Tony Gilroy before and Or so kind of
- 43:52Speaker 3: like opposite like because I really love spy thrillers and
- 43:55Speaker 3: like you get a lot of them because he does
- 43:57Speaker 3: The Born, the Born series, but he also does me
- 44:00Speaker 3: like The Devil Advocate, which was a really interesting way
- 44:03Speaker 3: to take on genre film and also a courtroom drama,
- 44:06Speaker 3: which I think was perfect. And I think that he
- 44:09Speaker 3: has an understanding of balancing genre, tone and message, and
- 44:19Speaker 3: I think that that is what made and Or such
- 44:22Speaker 3: a stark departure from a lot of the other things
- 44:26Speaker 3: that we see, because I think sometimes we end up
- 44:28Speaker 3: with really muddled storytelling. For that was my issues with
- 44:32Speaker 3: The Acolyte, Like I felt like the Accolade on paper
- 44:34Speaker 3: fantastic Acolyte and execution did not want but it was
- 44:39Speaker 3: because of some of the execution of balancing the elements
- 44:41Speaker 3: of deep genre storytelling and deep dramatic storytelling, and the
- 44:47Speaker 3: Heather was never connected from me, but to his overall
- 44:50Speaker 3: point into Like what you said, Katie, and God, I'm
- 44:53Speaker 3: probably I don't. I'm sure your fans are lovely and great,
- 44:56Speaker 3: but as somebody who just said they didn't like the
- 44:58Speaker 3: Accolyte and also despises Lunch Jedi, I also must say
- 45:02Speaker 3: the fact that I did not like the last Jedi
- 45:04Speaker 3: was because it threw out every single thing that immediately
- 45:08Speaker 3: preceded it, and you can't, in my opinion, you can't
- 45:11Speaker 3: do that in a trilogy. I also think you can't
- 45:14Speaker 3: do that when you're building up to a big thing,
- 45:17Speaker 3: which for the and Or series is Rogue one. So
- 45:22Speaker 3: I think like Gilroy thrives in wanting to tell his
- 45:27Speaker 3: story his way, but understanding the world that he is
- 45:31Speaker 3: in and how it impacts like the Ripples, he kind
- 45:34Speaker 3: of sends out of it, and I think that that's
- 45:36Speaker 3: what makes it very different than just saying I'm going
- 45:38Speaker 3: to make the story. I want to make and what
- 45:40Speaker 3: happens before and after do not matter, because this is
- 45:43Speaker 3: my story, which is why I have issues with The
- 45:45Speaker 3: Last Jedi. And I think that those are two ways
- 45:48Speaker 3: to approach something, and one I think gets you a
- 45:50Speaker 3: wider audience, and I think one can kind of just
- 45:53Speaker 3: silo us off and becomes the horror show that was
- 45:56Speaker 3: the twenty seventeen Twitter.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I will say, you're talking to two Last Jedi fans,
- 46:04Speaker 1: but I'm aware. The one thing, the one thing, the
- 46:08Speaker 1: one thing that we love about our show, and one
- 46:14Speaker 1: thing that me and Katie have like founded on is
- 46:19Speaker 1: everybody has an opinion and it's worth having an opinion
- 46:22Speaker 1: if you can back it up with some actual criticism
- 46:26Speaker 1: and facts.
- 46:27Speaker 2: You're not rude about it.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Exactly, Yeah, exactly, that's.
- 46:35Speaker 1: It's so easy. It's so easy.
- 46:38Speaker 3: But yeah, no, So I said I'm aware only because
- 46:44Speaker 3: I am. I've consistently realized that everybody that I tend
- 46:48Speaker 3: to like and go on shows with just love that movie.
- 46:50Speaker 3: And I'm like, dude, I think it's trash. I am
- 46:52Speaker 3: so sorry. I will tell you why if you let me,
- 46:55Speaker 3: please don't please, don't hate me. I think it's beautiful.
- 47:00Speaker 3: I do give it its beauty and it's needle drops
- 47:04Speaker 3: that it does very much. But I do think, like
- 47:08Speaker 3: for like an and Or comparison, like the idea of
- 47:11Speaker 3: saying like I am going to just do what I want,
- 47:13Speaker 3: I think is a strong way to storytelling that I think,
- 47:17Speaker 3: like I said, like more Star Wars needs to do
- 47:19Speaker 3: it is what made Visions really strong because they weren't
- 47:23Speaker 3: constrained by the Lucas story group. I That's why I
- 47:30Speaker 3: am really hopeful for and Or season two, like in
- 47:33Speaker 3: a way that I really am not for a lot
- 47:35Speaker 3: of other Disney properties that are coming out, like in general,
- 47:39Speaker 3: because I think Gilroy has had a good track record
- 47:42Speaker 3: in telling an interesting story and I think sometimes that
- 47:45Speaker 3: gets lost.
- 47:46Speaker 2: We're gonna go into our second ad break and we'll
- 47:50Speaker 2: be right back, all right, So we're gonna switch Gears
- 47:54Speaker 2: into Skeleton Crew just because we have a lot to
- 47:57Speaker 2: talk about and the Skeleton Crews are third topic. So
- 48:03Speaker 2: so we have the directors for each episode specifically, so
- 48:10Speaker 2: episode one and eight, so we have our bookends of
- 48:13Speaker 2: the show is done by John Watts. Episodes two and
- 48:17Speaker 2: three are done by David Lowry, who directed The Green Knight.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Episode four is directed by the Daniels who did everything everywhere,
- 48:26Speaker 2: all at once. Episode five is Jake Schreyer. I think
- 48:31Speaker 2: it's how you pronounce that, and he did. He did Thunderbolts.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Bryce Dallas Howard is doing episode six, and Lee Isaac Chung,
- 48:38Speaker 2: who did Twisters, is doing episode seven. So I'm very
- 48:42Speaker 2: excited by this range. Obviously, Thunderbolts hasn't come out. I
- 48:46Speaker 2: haven't seen Twisters, and I really didn't like the Green Knight.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Honestly, so Kate looks like she's chomping at the bit.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Kate go, I I am loving you as a guest.
- 49:04Speaker 3: I don't have a poker face like that is my problem.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Consistently at work is the best thing that happened to
- 49:12Speaker 3: me because I just wear a mask in public and
- 49:14Speaker 3: nobody knows my thoughts otherwise they do no, okay, So
- 49:20Speaker 3: this is what is wils to me. This includes some
- 49:23Speaker 3: of my absolute favorite things and things that I despise
- 49:27Speaker 3: and like. I don't know how to react to it
- 49:30Speaker 3: because I like, I love the vision, the vision that
- 49:34Speaker 3: David Lowry has for his work. I love the Daniels,
- 49:38Speaker 3: not even everything like everything everywhere, all at once. It's fantastic,
- 49:41Speaker 3: but so are there other films that are increasingly weird
- 49:44Speaker 3: and increasingly focused on how to get emotion out a
- 49:47Speaker 3: genre storytelling. I hate The Thunderbolts, I hate Paper Towns.
- 49:51Speaker 3: I have literally not liked a single film that Shryer
- 49:55Speaker 3: has done. They are bad. And I'm not interested in
- 49:59Speaker 3: the Thunderbolt. El brace Ellis Howard. Girl can direct, the
- 50:03Speaker 3: girl can direct, I'm interested. And Twisters is like my
- 50:07Speaker 3: blockbuster of the year, And I think Lee Isaac Chung
- 50:09Speaker 3: has like that idea of bringing really sound blockbuster filmmaking
- 50:15Speaker 3: into small things. And now this is where I talk
- 50:16Speaker 3: about John Watts. I hate MCU spider Man with my
- 50:20Speaker 3: entire heart because he's not Peter Parker. He's not poor,
- 50:25Speaker 3: he's not destitute. I mean, I guess now there's.
- 50:29Speaker 1: A there's a very large conversation about that, like and
- 50:33Speaker 1: I think there just will always will be. Yeah, uh
- 50:37Speaker 1: I I'm very curious to how we are still going
- 50:43Speaker 1: to stay in the line of you know this what
- 50:48Speaker 1: is supposed to be stranger things in the Star Wars galaxy.
- 50:54Speaker 1: When looking at all of these peop like it's it's
- 50:58Speaker 1: kind of bouncing all over the place. When you look
- 51:00Speaker 1: at these directors. Now we've seen the Mandalorian and we've
- 51:06Speaker 1: also seen the Mandalorian. You know, so like a you know,
- 51:12Speaker 1: a great you know, ensemble of directors can be good
- 51:16Speaker 1: at times, but it can also really hinder the way
- 51:20Speaker 1: that the show kind of falls together. And so I
- 51:24Speaker 1: don't know if this is going to be good for
- 51:27Speaker 1: this show or bad for this show, because I will
- 51:30Speaker 1: tell you right now, the only thing that I have,
- 51:33Speaker 1: the only things that I have seen on this list
- 51:36Speaker 1: all the way through is MCU, Spider Man, and the Mandalorian.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I have still not seen Twisters yet. I have still
- 51:44Speaker 1: to this day, even after renting it and saying I'm
- 51:48Speaker 1: gonna watch this later. Didn't even get the chance to
- 51:51Speaker 1: watch everything everywhere all at once, and The Green Knight
- 51:54Speaker 1: I was never able to see in theaters. So like,
- 51:58Speaker 1: but I know these people's were, like I've seen it,
- 52:01Speaker 1: and I know how crazy everybody was over these pieces
- 52:04Speaker 1: of work that they are currently you know, showcasing for
- 52:08Speaker 1: the show. But it's just like I, I I don't
- 52:12Speaker 1: know what is supposed to excite me. We've talked about, Katie, Yeah,
- 52:16Speaker 1: the look of the show, the feel of the show,
- 52:20Speaker 1: the idea of these kids, going on this adventure sounds fun,
- 52:26Speaker 1: but we still don't know what to expect from it,
- 52:29Speaker 1: and so I think that this is like it could
- 52:34Speaker 1: either pop really really well or it can spiral out
- 52:39Speaker 1: of control really fast.
- 52:41Speaker 3: That's and I think that's where I am with like
- 52:43Speaker 3: like literally like there are things that I love so
- 52:46Speaker 3: deeply and I'm just like I don't know how they
- 52:49Speaker 3: work with anything else. Because like the Daniels, I think
- 52:52Speaker 3: is a very good example. So you have like the
- 52:54Speaker 3: Death of Dick Long, which was what Daniel us did
- 52:58Speaker 3: on his own, and that is like a more drama
- 53:01Speaker 3: focused piece but still like more like comedic. But then
- 53:03Speaker 3: you also Swiss Army Man Knife, which is probably the
- 53:06Speaker 3: weird Swiss Army Man, which is probably the weirdest movie
- 53:10Speaker 3: I have ever seen, where it is literally like kind
- 53:12Speaker 3: of like Daniel Radcliffe is paralyzed and becomes different things.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Like it's weird, and so like, I don't know how
- 53:21Speaker 3: to add up what this can even tonally be because
- 53:26Speaker 3: I can't see anyone on this list being on the
- 53:30Speaker 3: same page because like I I've seen so much of
- 53:33Speaker 3: the work of a like everybody on here, I just
- 53:40Speaker 3: don't understand where the connective tissue is and that scares me.
- 53:48Speaker 3: Is is it the same writer at least, Like is
- 53:50Speaker 3: there one person at least doing something consistently across every
- 53:54Speaker 3: episode or is everything different?
- 53:58Speaker 2: I think John Watt is the only writer, maybe with
- 54:02Speaker 2: Filoni and Fabreau backing him up.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Let me look, because that is what I think the
- 54:10Speaker 3: big issue is, so to be somebody in the driver's seat.
- 54:15Speaker 2: So Christopher Ford and John Watts write episodes one through four,
- 54:20Speaker 2: and episodes seven and eight and then five and six
- 54:25Speaker 2: are written by young Joe Westner. No idea who that
- 54:31Speaker 2: is doesn't have a line.
- 54:33Speaker 3: On Wicked that I don't know either.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Yeah, O, Katie, what do you what do you think of?
- 54:40Speaker 1: Because I mean you you've said that you know, you
- 54:44Speaker 1: didn't like The Green Knight, but like I.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Know, which is like controversial a lot.
- 54:50Speaker 3: I you know, when it first came out, I thought
- 54:53Speaker 3: it was I rewatched it and I'm like, oh, I
- 54:56Speaker 3: can see I can't understand because it was.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Like said, is this like Arthurian legend tale? And I
- 55:04Speaker 2: didn't feel like that at all, Like I just walked
- 55:06Speaker 2: into it was like, Okay, King Arthur. I really love
- 55:09Speaker 2: King Arthur. Like not no, not one bit I don't
- 55:15Speaker 2: know anything that Shreier has done, and the only thing
- 55:17Speaker 2: by the Daniels I've seen is Everything Everywhere All Once.
- 55:20Speaker 2: I'm not a big movie buff person. I'm more a
- 55:23Speaker 2: book and a TV show person. I don't think I've
- 55:27Speaker 2: seen anything with Lee Isaac Chung.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Either, So it's like Fast and the Furious movies too, ohka,
- 55:34Speaker 3: I think, I think, Yeah.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Then, yeah, I've seen those. I will be interested because
- 55:40Speaker 2: like Green Knight, very different compared to like Everything Everywhere
- 55:45Speaker 2: All Once, Like you're saying, very different compared to MC
- 55:48Speaker 2: spider Man. So it will be interesting. I think Bryce
- 55:53Speaker 2: Els Howard is very good at adapting to a tone
- 55:57Speaker 2: for what her show runner wants to do. I really
- 56:01Speaker 2: need to see the girl do her own show, like
- 56:03Speaker 2: for the Life. Yeah, I need it that.
- 56:05Speaker 3: I agree with.
- 56:08Speaker 2: You were gonna say something else.
- 56:11Speaker 3: No, I agree that entirely. I will say to correct myself,
- 56:14Speaker 3: Lee Isaac Chung, No, that was Jessin Lynn. I'm very
- 56:16Speaker 3: bad for confusing the two. I don't know why I
- 56:18Speaker 3: do that. No, Lee Isaac Chung was the director on Manari,
- 56:23Speaker 3: and then he's also done an episode of The Mandalorian.
- 56:26Speaker 2: Okay, then I'm seeing that, but like I've not seen Manari,
- 56:30Speaker 2: so the only other.
- 56:34Speaker 3: TV writers, which I think is the scary thing, which
- 56:37Speaker 3: is the other issue I think Star Wars in every
- 56:40Speaker 3: other Prestige television series is running into They're hiring people
- 56:44Speaker 3: who make movies to make TV and they are fundamentally
- 56:47Speaker 3: different mediums.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think one of the things that we've
- 56:51Speaker 2: talked about is like, Okay, maybe they're using this as
- 56:54Speaker 2: like a an audition process for like, Okay, could any
- 56:59Speaker 2: of these people make movies, which is why they're giving
- 57:05Speaker 2: the budget that they do for these shows. But I
- 57:07Speaker 2: think with some of the WGA contract negotiations they will
- 57:12Speaker 2: be able to get a writer's room in which will
- 57:15Speaker 2: help a lot of these shows. But like Skeleton Crew
- 57:17Speaker 2: wasn't done. It was done before the WGA new contract,
- 57:23Speaker 2: so I'm hoping with like I know Tony Gilroy was
- 57:27Speaker 2: doing and or So that was done too. But like
- 57:29Speaker 2: new things coming out Ahsoka season two for one, Like
- 57:33Speaker 2: somebody give Dave Filoni, Like, somebody edit Dave Filoni for
- 57:37Speaker 2: the life of me, please.
- 57:39Speaker 5: Anyways, I will say I love well, I love Gianchino's dad.
- 57:44Speaker 5: I like he does amazing work, so hopefully he got
- 57:50Speaker 5: daddy's jeans. Oh, he's doing He does the Penguin. He's
- 57:56Speaker 5: the composer on the Penguin.
- 57:58Speaker 2: I have not gotten the and watched so but I
- 58:02Speaker 2: did see that because I think Snell brought up actually,
- 58:06Speaker 2: but yes, we're talking about Mick Giacchino is the composer
- 58:10Speaker 2: for Skeleton Crew and his dad did Rogue One and
- 58:14Speaker 2: The Batman and has done a bunch of other things,
- 58:17Speaker 2: but those are by Night.
- 58:18Speaker 3: He directed yea by Night. Yeah, you're right, So.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Hopefully he got some dad's jeans and is able to
- 58:25Speaker 2: do a really good job.
- 58:29Speaker 3: So can I also say something as I feel bad
- 58:31Speaker 3: for slandering John Watts. I only don't like his Spider
- 58:34Speaker 3: Man's I do actually like some of his other stuff
- 58:39Speaker 3: because he did a horror movie called Clown that is
- 58:41Speaker 3: like atrociously great, like it is just aware of what
- 58:45Speaker 3: it is and in like the best ways. And he
- 58:46Speaker 3: just did the new Apple TV movie Wolfs, which was
- 58:50Speaker 3: really good. Yeah, so I will give John Wats his flowers.
- 58:55Speaker 3: It came in kind of hot on him, and I
- 59:00Speaker 3: should be honest.
- 59:02Speaker 1: I love when people can be honest, but like I
- 59:06Speaker 1: love hot takes. It's just like I come from a
- 59:09Speaker 1: family that's always spilled tea, and you know it's you know,
- 59:14Speaker 1: I mean Kate, you know Hispanic family is always looking
- 59:17Speaker 1: for you know, it's just like we we got it.
- 59:21Speaker 1: We gotta know it, we gotta see it. So whenever
- 59:23Speaker 1: somebody is on here and in sharing some of that stuff,
- 59:26Speaker 1: I absolutely love it.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Hot takes are how I got my job here because
- 59:30Speaker 2: Snell heard my defense of my I hate Netflix Nares
- 59:33Speaker 2: Devil and was like, Okay, I like her. Yes that's
- 59:37Speaker 2: a whole Yes, that's the whole thing.
- 59:41Speaker 3: And I've wounded you all enough. It's okay. I can
- 59:44Speaker 3: take I can take one for the team.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I appreciate what they've pulled him into the MCU and
- 59:50Speaker 2: the stuff that they've had.
- 59:51Speaker 1: There, but I.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Really enjoyed Ben affleck as stare deevil. Okay, we'll just
- 59:56Speaker 2: leave it at that's fair.
- 59:58Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 59:58Speaker 3: I actually don't hate Affle like Daredevil. Those movies are fine.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: They are not as bad as people say they are.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: I'm not alone in the world. Clai like, Okay, I.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: Can feel too much on this podcast.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: All right, So we're going to quickly add in this
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: book things because we have two things, and then we
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: will dive into the movie talk, but I figure the
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: movie talk is going to kind of combine into one
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: topic and take us the rest of the show, so
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: we're gonna go do that. So the Rise of Skywalker
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: comic adaptation is coming officially once again, because it was
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: supposed to come out in June of twenty twenty and
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: then was canceled because I'm assuming COVID, but then also
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: the reaction to the film, So now it's coming again.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: It will be a five issue series with scenes that
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: were not featured in the movie, and it is going
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: to be done by returning comic book adapter Jodie Hauser.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Jody Hauser does a lot of the adaptations for Star
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Wars comics, like she did the Thrown books. So and
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: then the only other thing that we have is Kirsten
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: White's Pad One is getting a manga adaptation, which I
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: don't have that pulled up, but were they They were
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: here sumhmerre this is our chat. Welcome to the Chat.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: So we have this cover which has Obi Wan staring
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: off into a sunrise or sunset on Coruscant, and then
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: we have obi Wan in the wild on the planet
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: that I don't remember was featured because we really didn't
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: like this book, so but they're there. They've been doing
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: a lot of adapt manga adaptations for the Disney young
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: adult series books like Lost Stars has a really good
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: one that I know is super popular, So if you're interested,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: you can check those out. There is a pre order
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: and it will be released by Jakin. I don't know
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: that one, but it's on January sixteenth next year, so.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. The only thing that I will add to
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the book news is historically, as somebody who worked at
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: a comic shop when the last Jedi comic was coming out. Unfortunately,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: they don't do very well as far as like the adaptations.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Go, and yet Lucasfilm keeps doing them.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I think it's just because they've done it with everything else.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: They've done a or at least I think they're actually
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: set to release a trade paperback of the full prequel trilogy.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I actually just saw a cover for it, but like, uh,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: it's thin.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: That's a dark horse with the graphic novel.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but still it's it's it's as far as
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: like adaptations for the movies, it's like, oh, well, we've
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: done one for everything else, so let's just continue making them. Also,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I will say this, it does give people jobs as
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: far as editors, artists, and writers, so that's good for
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: the industry. Uh, but unfortunately it's just it's they're not
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: very popular.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: So just like I think how to Train Your Dragon
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: is going to be anyways not not a topic for
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Star Wars, but I just had to say it. Okay,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: I need to go refill my water before I cough
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: some more and miss my mute button. So Clay, why
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: don't you lead into the movie talk and I will
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: be right back. And we're about to jump into our
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: third ad, y'all. We promise we'll be right back. We promise.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Uh. The top of this movie news is, of course,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: the Simon Kinberg trilogy. Now, Kate, I did not know
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: this because I, uh was what is this? The Oh?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: No is Simon Kingberg? See? I always get this mixed up.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: He did the Phoenix movie correct for X Men? Yeah,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: right of the Phoenix see, and I jasus.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: Users passed and last and and first class?
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Was he a part of all of the Wait?
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: No, no, no, wait no he wasn't. I don't think
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: he was. Sorry, Google, this isn't look this is the
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: problem with Google. AI it just pops it to the
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: top and tells you that's what it is.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: See. No, sorry, I will say this for those of
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: you he did not know. I saw a comic creator
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: say that if you go into a Google search and
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: use the subtraction sign and push AI on every Google
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: search that you do, it gets rid of the AI results.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: That is fantastic. So for anybody else was watching Okay, actually, yes,
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: he was involved in Dasa Fuser's past. He wrote it.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: He wrote the abysmal Fantastic four movie. He also wrote
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: X Men Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: See I have not seen Apocalypse and I have not
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: seen Dark Phoenix. So for me.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Oh and the last end, Okay, Google AI wasn't wrong.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Oh look at that.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: He wrote that.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: I it's really funny how people reacted to this. There
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was two camps in the conversation about Kenberg being involved
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: in this new trilogy, and I want to hear your
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: opinion on Kinberg himself and the idea of these two
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: pockets of Star Wars fandom that have been created right now.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: On one side, people are saying this is great news.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: There's going to be one individual writing for all three movies.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: It's something that we didn't have for the sequel trilogy,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: so now we're gonna have it here. It's all gonna
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: be connected. That's one side of the story, whereas other
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: people are solely focused on the abysmal pieces of work
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: that he's worked on and saying, oh no, this is
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: what we get for Star Wars. I don't know how
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: we feel about this. So Kate, you got the floor,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: give me those hot takes you've been giving us all night.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: How do you feel about kin Berg? And these two?
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Both sides of this coin that people are on.
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: It's a monkey's paw situation. I want one writer to
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: handle a trilogy so they can tell one cohesive story
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: as I mentioned earlier. But oh my god, he does
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: not have a good thing in his repertoire. I guess
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Invasion in Sherlock.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Holmes, okay, yeah, and the original.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Mister and Missus Smith. That's it. His like Homeboy goes
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: from State of the Union to Jumper, and like all
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: of the X Men movies. He did create Star Wars Rebels,
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: which is good. So he has like a footing in
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: the Star Wars universe.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but like I.
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: I don't I like one two things that he has
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: done in his entire career as a writer, and I
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: watch a lot of movies. No, I think this is
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: a bad idea. But I mean, at least it feels
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: like they learned something from the last one.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Question mark.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: So is he is he? Is he directing or is
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: he just writing?
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: I think that he is only producing?
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Like I like, okay, he's only producing. Okay, Well, then,
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: like I wouldn't be that worried because if he's old.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Trilogy will be written and produced by Ken Bert.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, never mind, because he's produced some good movies.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: He produced a Haunting in Venice, He's produced he produced Legion,
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: which is a fantastic TV show. Uh, he produced Designated Survivor,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: the Deadpool movies, Logan, Well, Chaffy, which was good. So
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: it's like, it's weird he is. It's weird.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: He's had a very clearly hit or miss career. Uh. Well,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: here's here's as somebody who has who has had a
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: very diverse opinion on the Star Wars universe, what is
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: your opinion on if this should be Because there's massive
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: rumors on this whole thing. Okay, so some people are
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: saying that this is, you know, going to be episode
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: ten eleven twelve. Some people say that it's not going
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: to be episode ten eleven twelve. We've kind of talked
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: about how you really love visions and that shows like
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: a very vast type of stories telling that isn't stuck
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: in the lucasfilm Star Wars Skywalker saga. Do we as
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: fans of Star Wars need an episode ten eleven twelve
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: or should they just jump on to something else?
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I think what sucks is and then this are the
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: hot ticcums. I think if jj Abrams had been able
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: to tell the story that he wanted to tell with
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: the sequel trilogy and Ray, I don't think we would
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: need it. But because I do think Ray's growth, like
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: the issue like taking like whatever opinion and about Last Jedi,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: aside the fact that it only takes place eighteen hours
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: after the start of the first one. Top Me ever,
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: stunts the growth of Ray like she is somebody who
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: is confined to a matter of months, when she's a
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: character that deserves an actual long art like her O.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: Her time with her in the trilogy I think is
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: like about on part to the entire time that Luke
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: spends in Dagaba, like like that is insane to think
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: of because that's one section of that movie, right, Yeah,
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: And so like I think that, like it's weird because
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: like I was a person who did not hate the
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: Race Skywalker of it All, because I'm also a person
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: who is a stepfather and a really terrible biological father.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: So I think that for me that hit as a
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: kid with non traditional families. But I just think, like,
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: outside of The Skywalker of it All, I think Ray
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: herself deserves more. I think Finn deserves more, more substantially
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: more so, even if it's not a race story, Finn
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: deserves more, which is actually the reason I have an
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: issue with the sequel trilogy is because of what the
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: second one does to Finn and Po. And so it's
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: weird because like in my heart of hearts, I want
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: to say, we don't need it, because we just need
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: different stories. Let things go. But I actually have an
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: attachment to the characters from the sequel trilogy that I
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: don't see got. I don't think got the ability to
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: grow in the way that they deserved to, and so
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: I almost want it as a do over in a
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: way which makes it very hard for me to be
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: like I don't want it at all.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Which is very valid. I think that a lot of
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: people have found an attachment to all of these characters
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: that have been shown in the sequel trilogy, you know,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: which is why you know, the conversations of the Race
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Skywalker film, you know, it has also so kind of
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: amalgamed into this whole kin Berg story as well, like,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: is he actually rewriting what we thought was going to
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: be the Race Guy Walker film and they're actually throwing
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: into a trilogy. Some people are saying, oh no, this
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: is going to be completely separate from that, and it's
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: it's all a huge mess right now. Which worries me
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: more than anything else in Star Wars is that, of
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: course lucasfilm has it right, but because there is so
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: many people saying so many different things, when those people
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: have had reliable sources in the past saying things, that
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: is still worries. You know, we heard that in the past.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: There was I forgot the writer that recently walked away
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: from the Skywalkers film night Yeah, walked away from the
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: from the film, and they were talking about how I
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: can't remember who the actual Scooper was at the time,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: but they were saying something of all in the lines
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: of like, oh, lucasfilm has kind of they can't run
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: on nostalgia anymore, or something like along those lines.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Star Wars is a nostalgia based enterprise and they're
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: running out of ways to create nostalgia.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, oh yeah, it's right here. It's right here,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: And I did show notes you walk away from that
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and just create stories in a vast universe. That's the
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: science fantasy you have Star Wars. That's all you need
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: to do.
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: No, I agree there, especially with the fact that the
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: December twenty twenty sixth movie has been taken off the calendar.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: I did not include that. I just realized that. But
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: with that being taken off, it becomes more likely that
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Kenberg is actually stepping in to write a full trilogy,
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: and hopefully Charmine Obeyed Shanoi gets to stick around as
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: the director, because I think that's super important for her
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: to still be able to take on Ray Skywalker and
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: have that female perspective on her as a character.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: So let me see.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: Hey, I agree there. I think it's weird. I think
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: Star Wars is in a new place and Lucasfilms needs
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: to do some soul searching into what is actually what
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: they want to do, because I do think there is
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: a problem that they've continually run in by setting things
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: up so far in advance and then having stuff not
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: come into fruition that it stunts the growth of everything
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: else behind it, which is an issue.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: They need to pick something and stick to it, because
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: I mean, when The Force Awakens came out, like, there
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: were so many new fans that latched on. I know
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: so many people on Star Wars Twitter join on specifically
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: because of seeing right in that trailer and getting the
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: cosplays hurt at everything. So if you pick something and
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: stick with it, people are going to latch on, and
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: you are going to draw new fans in. The reaction
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: should not matter. You need to be able to stick
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: to a story and finish it out.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: And I think the weird thing for me is like
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: I think in general, like I don't even so I
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: don't even believe that Disney and Lucasfilms are directly looking
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: at Internet reaction and sentiment. I think they are looking
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: at numbers and conflating two things. And I think what
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: they are doing overall, and because this is what's happening
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: in a lot of studios, not just Disney is they're
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: making so many films by committee instead of actually letting
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: them become artistic, be artistic visions, that you're having them
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: just get curtailed and pushed out or taken off the
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: chopping block from like one test screening and not even
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: a test reading necessarily with audiences. But where like different
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: execs have their hands in the pie when like they
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: don't genuinely know what would make a good pie. They're
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: just there. And I think that that's the thing that
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: is going to I think if left uncheck, it's it's
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: going to run it into the ground, the same way
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: it's been doing with other with other things. I mean,
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: it's what WB's having to deal with more broadly as well,
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: because their executives are essentially putting together committees to greenlight
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: to write too, Like they're everywhere. There's so much oversight
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: that nothing's allowed to flourish.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: As Andrews said in the chat earlier when we were
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: talking about the shows, Lucasolm doesn't even know what they're doing.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Too many yeah chiefs and not enough Indians or as
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I would like to say, too many managers and not
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: enough workers. Ah. So I completely agree with everything but
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: I know you have a heart out. I think Clay
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: and I have one more thing to discuss, but I'm
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: going to go ahead and let you close out. So
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: say your spiel Kate.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: Oh yeah, hi, okay, editor, achieve a vote? Why though,
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: and we need your health, stay alive and genuinely pay
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: our writers like we could do this for free, but
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: I want to make sure that my people get paid
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: because we are only what they make of it, and
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: I think that more sites need to push on that
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: to make sure that they, you know, pay folks, even
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: if it's hard. So throughout the month of November, we
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: are taking no nations taking subscriptions. That's also an option.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: No amount is too little. All of it goes to
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: help us. And if you can't help us that way, like.
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: Sign up for a newsletter, share, share our work, get
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: us out there, show people that independent media is important
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: because it is getting eaten up a lot more by
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: vcs and at the end of the day, those are
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: the only ones that are going to be around.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: And that's always hard because those are not always diverse,
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: and they are usually not focused on creating the original
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: content now so much as they're focused on guides an CEO,
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: writing and all of these other things because they're capitalist.
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: So yeah, it's me your friendly neighborhood, not a capitalist,
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: just trying to pay the people that work for her site.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: Yes, so y'all. Just to remind I go check out
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: the links in the description box below. Kate, thank you
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: so much for being here. I really appreciate you. I
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: love what you do.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: One question, just because I've been loving your hot takes
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: all night. We had this discussion right before we did
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: our interview with Stephen Barnes last week. If Star Wars
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I don't know if you're familiar with Bridgerton at all.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, okay, if Star Wars adapted modern music the
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: same way Bridgerton does an orchestra form, yep, I knew it.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: I just I I think this is gonna be like
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: if they were to adapt modern music but infuse it
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: with their like overall, like Star Wars in world music,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: would that be a go for you? Or No?
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: This is funny because I want to be like, that's dumb.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: But I'm not talking about Bridgerton. I listen, I watched
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: Olive Rain on the CW and they have they that's yeah,
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: I would not say no. I would not say no, and.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: This should be our final ad break. So y'all thanks
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: for bearing with us. We appreciate y'all. We'll be right back.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: It's a good idea.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: I think Lucasfilms should do it it, like, because everybody
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: is always annoyed at like Star Wars using modern music
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: for their trailers, like apparently this last Skeleton Crew one
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: like got a lot of people all up in a you.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: Know, tizzy because they used uh, a modern song to
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: to promote their show, and I just like, who cares.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: It's it's music, it's entertainment, whatever. But I think it
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: would be fun. I think it would be fun. But
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: that's all. That's all I wanted to ask. I I
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: I think that's gonna be the key question Katie. Then
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask everybody. I'm really should you should?
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: I want to know if anybody else brings up Rain.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: So shout out to you, Katie for knowing exactly what
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: I'm talking.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: I have been looking at I always put on like
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: a dumb TV show while I'm working because I just
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: need the background noise. And I've been looking because Rain
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: is on Prime Video and I've been looking at it
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: and been like, Okay, I need to put that on,
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: like and now I think I gotta do it.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Like is it.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: Historically accurate with period clothing?
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: No?
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: Is it historically accurate? Was with music choice?
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: No?
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: Is it messy as all hell and really sexy? Yes?
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Yes? Absolutely yes? And the oh my god, Adelaide is
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: in Craze anatomy now and I just love this anyways,
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: So we will let you get out of here because
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: we know you gotta go. But once again, thanks for
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: being here. Go check out but why though on all
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: the social media platforms and the site.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, thank you so much. It has been great.
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: I'm happy that you enjoyed my hot takes not everything. Yeah,
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: thank you so much for having me.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: Thanks by Kate. I all right, so I believe the
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: last bit of this that we need to discuss is
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: specifically the Hollywood Reporter article. Oh so, this is something
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: that I think we kind of talked about in the
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: GUA chat or the Star Wars Lives chat, I don't remember,
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: but part of this says unlike Marble or DC with
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: decades of stories propelling them forward, or been Harry Potter
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: with seven fleshed out books, Star Wars at its Court
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: has been the original George Lucas movies, and nothing has
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: been codified or made more canonical in modern times than
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: those three movies. To filmmakers and executives, the First Trilogy.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: So the original trilogy is the Old Testament. I don't
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: like how this sounds.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I don't like it either, because I mean, from one,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: let's just get this out of the way. Yes, I
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: understand that, like we said, a lot of this stuff
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: recently has been focused on nostalgia. You can even say,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: going as far back as Rogue One, when you say, oh,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Darth Vader does not deserve to be in that movie,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: doesn't need to be in that movie. It was there
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: for a nostalgia piece. It was there to make the
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: connection from Rogue One to a new Hope with people
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: that just be like boom, I know why he's there,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: you know, it's just that nostalgia. Same thing with Luke
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Skywalker and season two the Mandalori. Yep, it was all
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: nostalgia based. Now, thinking that the First Trilogy is the
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: Old Testament, like the idea that this like again, it's
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: kind of what we were talking about with Kate, like
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: and what we've always said. I don't like being stuck
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: in a single timeline in what is described as a
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: massive eight hundred planet universe. Yeap, that is absolutely ridiculous.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I don't get it. I don't get it. Like it.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: You look at all these other things. You look at Marvel,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: you look at d C. And yes, you could say, oh,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: well Marvel had from Iron Man all the way to
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Infinity War and they're gonna keep going blah blah blah.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: It's technically one story. If you look at the actual comics,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: those stories go everywhere with their storytelling everywhere. Same thing
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: with d C. Harry They I don't know why they
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: used Harry Potter in there. I know that they wanted
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: to try to.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Like it's just because they have reference material.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: They have read it. Yeah, that's basically it. But there
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: is when you set a precedent of a massive universe
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: to the point we're one of the key story points
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: in one of your Disney Plus shows is hey, we're
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: actually going to travel to a different galaxy.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: That is a problem. It really is.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: And like they can say all day long, oh, we
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: don't have reference material. Well you know what I'm staring
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: at over there on a bookshelf. I'm staring at roughly
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty Legends books, So you can't tell me,
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: and I know this is the Hollywood reporter doing their
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: thing editorializing whatever. You have one hundred and fifty Star
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: Wars Legends books, and before people tell me Legends was
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: not perfect. Yes, Legends was not perfect whatsoever, but it
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: is still reference material and it may be something that
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: George Lucas was like, yeah, you know, if you want
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: to write for Star Wars, you can write for Star Wars,
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: but like, it's not going to matter to me. That
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: may be what he said, but that is still something
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: that Lucasfilm put their stamp of approval on on the
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: publishing page. Yes, the one hundred and fifty books probably
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: just I can't even say that because MCU has been
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: around for forever. So I was like, probably as much
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: storytelling as like Captain America has had, with like how
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: many pages are out there, because I've also got comics
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: on that bookshelf.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: But again, you have Captain America was made in the forties.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: So like Captain America's a bad example. I admitted it before.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: It's gonna be a little hard to compare the two,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: but I will say this. There is a lot of content.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: The one thing that Lucasfilm did wrong is he opened
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: the floodgates and said here you go, y'all can do whatever.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: He called it fan fiction, and that's exactly what people did.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: They fanfic the fuck out of this universe so much
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: so oh.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: That they every fan thinks they have a right to it.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Yeah. But also they've mass produced books about it. Like
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: you said, a stamp of approval from Lucasfilm to put
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: that name Star Wars on a hardcover, on a paperback,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: on a comic, whatever it may have been. They said, okay,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: let's do it. There's there's You can't say that it
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: was not wanted because boom, it's right there and again.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: And even if Disney didn't want to approve of it,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: well then guess what They are printing things that say
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: the Essential Legends Collection on them.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: Yes, and you can tell me, oh, this is random
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: house World's idea. Everything Star Wars has to go through Lucasfilm.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: If you have an idea, Lucasfilm has to approve it.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: We talked to Stephen Barnes last me, who was like, yeah,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: I had ideas for this book. Look as SOMETHM didn't
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: approve them, like well he they approved some of them,
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: but there was like other ideas, but.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: It was his editor. His editor, who works directly with
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Star Wars is gonna be the one to tell him
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: yes or no. And again we've already talked about this,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: but one thing that also holds them back continuously the
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Skywalker saga, the idea that these characters, the same actors
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: need to play these characters over and over and over again.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: We've talked about this numerous times. Like Mark Hamill is
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: like getting to a point where I don't even think
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: he's voice acting anymore. Yeah, Like he he came out
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: of retirement to do one last scene for the Joker
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: in that Wild Infinite Crisis animated movie and that was it,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Like he's not acting anymore. He didn't even like he
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: hardly acted for the Mandalorian. He was a stand in
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and then they used an AI voice over machine or
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: software to his voice to make his voice sound younger,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: to attach to this actor who actually played Luke Skywalker.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Like they are bending over backwards and hurting themselves when
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: they just need to say, hey, Luke Skywalker is a
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: fictional character that anybody can play. Yeah, it's it's that simple.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: We could beat a dead horse over and Orian. Yeah,
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: like y'all know where we stand. This is dumb.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's just very, very scary to hear this
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: from somebody who was supposed to leap at Lucasfilm. Yeah,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: so tell somebody, oh, this is the old testament. You
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: need to create a new testament. And we're running out
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: of nostalgia ideas. So here you go, Like, we're intrusting
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: you on this, but we're probably not gonna like it.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Like like it's a scary thing to be under a
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: microscope like that.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: You know, one hund as I hack to put another
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: lung that nobody heard because I got the mute butt.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: It's absolutely batshit and studios have depended on nostalgia and
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: we're seeing it with the How to Train Your Dragon.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: We're seeing it with Malwana, which Malana is only not
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: even ten years old, and the live action behind the scenes.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: I saw the behind Yeah, I saw it today and
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I'm like, Amber Lynn loves Moana, not gonna see it,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: not gonna see it. I love her to death. She
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: is also too young to be going to a movie theater.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: Right now, even when it hits Disney Plus not gonna
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: watch it because I have also heard that How to
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Train Your Dragon, if you've seen the animated movie, you've
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: seen the live action. That was a direct quote that
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Daniel Rpka said, if you've seen the animated movie, you've
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: seen the live action.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: The trailer for How to Train Your Dragon, Toothless looks
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: identical minus his eyes, and the scene is like exactly
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: the same when what's his name meets Toothless like hiccup, no, yeah, no.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: They even got Gerard Butler back to play the dad.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it's it's the it's the complete
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: opposite direction of like, cause again there's people that are saying, Oh,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: if I wanted to watch this, I could just go
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: watch the animated movie, and so Disney was like, oh,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: and Paramount like whoever dream works They're they're like, Oh,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: if that's the case, we'll just rewrite the animated movie
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: into live action. And that's just not the way to go.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: It's not original, it's not fun, Like, it doesn't do
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: anything for us.
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: Hollywood has lost the creative bone in its body and
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: it doesn't know what to do with itself because That's
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: that's why we're living the nostalgia train. It's easy. They
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: don't have to rewrite scripts a dozen times because they go, oh, hey,
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: we have something that works, let me just use this.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: I'm not seeing ma Wanatu in theaters. I'm not seeing
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: How to Train Your Dragon. I will always have animated
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: How to Train Your Dragon in my heart and available
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: to watch. I'm not going to see the live action one.
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: You drag my whole dead body to that movie.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: I love.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: I loved How to Train Your Dragon. The animated one
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: like it is a great film, and it saddens my
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: heart because the live action, the one minute and eleven
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: second trailer doesn't have the vibrancy then How to Train
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Your Dragon anyways, Okay, I'm sorry I keep talking about
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: how to Train Your Dragon. This is not How to
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: Train Your Dragon podcast. But that's my thoughts on that.
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: I think that's about it on this. I don't know
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: what you and Kate talked about, because obviously I took
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: my headphones off.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Well, no I I I genuinely just asked her what
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: her opinion is on the Kinberg thing, and she said
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: that she is in love with the idea of having
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: somebody complete a story from A to B. But it
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: being kin Berg and not having a great career is
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: what's really scary about the situation.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I can agree with that. I really liked Dark Phoenix.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I have not seen Phoenix. I haven't seen Apocalypse. I
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: haven't seen anything that that Kinberg has actually been a
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: part of. So I think I think he's produced movies
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: that I've seen, but like the stuff that he's written,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: I don't think i've seen so.
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: No.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: I also and like for me, I'm in the same
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: boat because I I like continuity. Continuity is always good
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: for storytelling. But the fact that this person has a very,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: very hit and miss career, and I think one of
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: the quotes that we read in our chat two weeks
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: ago was, oh, well, we know that he'll get something
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: done quick. That's not the best idea when it comes
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: to Star Wars. You know, like to just churn out
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: a story. It's like, it doesn't give me a whole
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: lot of hope that it's going to be a good story.
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, sorry, I was googling ken Burg. I was
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: googling ken Burg to tell you what he had written
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: on everything, and I just see this is geek tyrant
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: who is sourcing My Time to Shine and this apparently
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: was a subscriber's only post on Twitter.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Did you see this? I have not what happened.
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: So they posted that Henry Cavell has had talks to
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: star in that Triller already.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: Don't know.
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: I feel like that's too fresh and this is like
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: so comic book movie. Had this a day ago. A
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: geek tyrant posted this four hours ago, but Kinberg came
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: out last week. Why would they have already decided to
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: talk to a person to start That's bullshit. Okay, Anyway,
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: I got completely distracted.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I think it's for the fact that they are just
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: My Time to Shine is always trying to just grab
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: onto something. But also there has been a lot of
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: people that have been making up scoops and tagging legitimate scoopers,
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: and they have been calling them out on it. So
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: don't believe everything you see on the internet. Guys, we
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: when we talk about this stuff, it is all rumor
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: mill It is speculation. It is a conversation that you're having.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: That's the whole point of us having this podcast. Yeah,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: but we don't say anything is official unless it's on
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: Star Wars.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Dot com Yeah for sure. Okay, so writer, these are
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: the ones I know of which I think you would
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: have seen. I'm not saying any of the ones I
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: don't know. Mister and Missus Smith. The original, Yes, yes,
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: the original, two thousand and five, X Men, The Last Stand,
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Sherlock Holmes, I have heard of this means War. I
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: don't recognize it, but I've heard of it.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: This Means War that's with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: Yes, okay, that's.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I need to watch that.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: I think I saw it on Hulu, and that is
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: why I was.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Like, if you if you like a good rom com,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: funny stuff, Okay.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: X Men, Days of Future Past, Fantastic four, obviously, X
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: Men Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, the three, five to five, and
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: then the Killers game, which has not come out yet.
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: That is an early rewrites, so excuse me. And then
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: he's produced a lot of things, but like Sherlock Holmes, phenomenal,
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: loved it. That's the fact that he's not on Sherlock
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: Holmes two. That's probably why Sherlock Holmes three hasn't been
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: made yet. And I really enjoyed the new X Men stuff.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: I enjoyed Days of Future Past, I enjoyed Apocalypse, I
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: know that's like heresy, and I enjoyed Dark Phoenix.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: Like Last Stand was not great.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: I hated Last Stand.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: Last Stan was not great at all when you look
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: at that trilogy, horrible that that is the sore thumb
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: out of everything. But yeah, we'll see how it goes again.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: This is something that Lucasfilm definitely is attempting to get right.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: So I don't think that they will, you know, just
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: will and Nilly say hey, yeah, we completely trust you
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: without any notes. Let's get moving yea. If they don't
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: like his direction, I think they will get rid of him.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: I'm just worried about how far out they're willing to
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: push this trilogy until they finally say, oh, we're done
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: dragging you guys along. I know it's twenty thirty seven,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: but we're not getting any trilogy no, yeap, all right.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: So let's close us out because I think that's about it.
