Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia Podcast.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Welcome to me Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain
- 0:30Speaker 2: Time on Thursday, November seventh, and we're live from me
- 0:33Speaker 2: Eater headquarters in Bosa, Montana. I'm your host, Steve Ranella,
- 0:37Speaker 2: joined today by Brody Henderson and the version of Doctor
- 0:42Speaker 2: Randall where his hair is not combed. I didn't realize
- 0:48Speaker 2: it was that it's his boater prominent, his voting version.
- 0:52Speaker 2: On today's show, we're interviewing the Squore, the former Metater
- 0:57Speaker 2: podcast Alum. Can you be a former alarm? It's so
- 1:00Speaker 2: just it's sort of implied you can't be a future alum.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Maybe you can.
- 1:06Speaker 3: We'll sort this out.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We're interviewing me Eater Podcast alum, the squirrel Doc John Koprowski,
- 1:17Speaker 2: a mammologist and biologist at the University of Wyoming.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Then we're gonna go over and hit another installment of
- 1:22Speaker 2: tattoos I regret, which I fear is gonna be overly vicious,
- 1:27Speaker 2: followed by a rut report from Yanni's tree stand in Wisconsin,
- 1:30Speaker 2: where Yanni is currently sitting right now. Then we'll highlight
- 1:34Speaker 2: here's the thing we're gonna highlight a political defeat and
- 1:39Speaker 2: this has this has dominated the news cycle since to
- 1:45Speaker 2: like CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal. You can't
- 1:48Speaker 2: find anything that's not about this. The biggest political.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Upset, only thing everybody's talking about.
- 1:57Speaker 2: In American political history. I am talking, of course, about
- 2:02Speaker 2: the defeat of Proposition one twenty seven in Colorado, which
- 2:10Speaker 2: would have banned the hunting of mountain lions and bobcats.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And they threw in links for good measure, even though
- 2:19Speaker 2: they're eesa protected. They put a ton of money into it,
- 2:24Speaker 2: They rolled out all manner of faux experts. They tried
- 2:29Speaker 2: to run a statewide ballot box initiative to ban mountain
- 2:33Speaker 2: lion and bobcat hunting, and they got beat. We spent
- 2:38Speaker 2: a ton of time on this issue. I have been
- 2:41Speaker 2: euphoric when people saw me the next on the day
- 2:45Speaker 2: after the election, running around just inexplicably pumping my fists
- 2:48Speaker 2: in the air. I don't think they knew that's what
- 2:51Speaker 2: it was about. I have been euphoric as part of
- 2:58Speaker 2: that celebration. We're going to talk to two more me
- 3:02Speaker 2: Eater podcasts. Alum Gasper Paracone, the co chair of the
- 3:08Speaker 2: organization Colorado's wildlife deserves better. And then we're going to
- 3:13Speaker 2: talk to a personal buddy mine, a Colorado houndsman and
- 3:17Speaker 2: wild cattle catcher, Cody Farrion. Then lastly, we're gonna dig
- 3:24Speaker 2: into an indefensible law that ought to get passed. As
- 3:29Speaker 2: a quick catchup, it was proposed to me that we
- 3:32Speaker 2: talked about Randal getting a white tail deer.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And I did not propose it.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The only noteworthy thing about it was that Randall's got
- 3:42Speaker 2: many whitetail deer, but he happened to get a white
- 3:44Speaker 2: tail deer in a state other than what he had
- 3:46Speaker 2: in the.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Past, first whitetail buck in that state. Actually, because I
- 3:50Speaker 5: kill whiteail does.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It got less and less interesting to me the more
- 3:55Speaker 2: I learned about it. But just suffices to say Randal
- 3:58Speaker 2: got himself a nice white tail bark like many other Americans.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Many millions of other Americans, like Joe, you know.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Just but what's more interesting to me is the Randall's
- 4:13Speaker 2: wife tagged out. Tell me about that, Randall, because that
- 4:15Speaker 2: interests me.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Uh, that's actually, I mean, it's sort of a good
- 4:19Speaker 5: story and not a good story. At the same time,
- 4:20Speaker 5: we went out for the weekend, pulled up, set up
- 4:23Speaker 5: the camper, got the dogs running around, poured him a
- 4:26Speaker 5: bowl of water, and I set up my tripod and
- 4:28Speaker 5: my binos and.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Spotted a spotted a dough about.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's good.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Keeping someone Someone just wrote in.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Keep them coming, I'd like to I'd like to know
- 4:42Speaker 5: anything that comes to mind.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Podcast listener. Someone said he looks like Daniel Stern and
- 4:46Speaker 3: home alone too after getting electrocuted.
- 4:47Speaker 5: I'm kind of getting the ancient Aliens guy vibe too,
- 4:51Speaker 5: So to back up.
- 4:52Speaker 2: There you are, You've got the water, the dogs, all
- 4:55Speaker 2: that kind of stuff.
- 4:55Speaker 5: And set up my bipod or my tripod with my byos,
- 4:58Speaker 5: just scanning around seeing what's up and down the valley,
- 5:02Speaker 5: and about fifteen hundred yards behind camp, I see a
- 5:05Speaker 5: dough and uh. I watched her for five minutes or
- 5:09Speaker 5: so to see if there was any other deer, and
- 5:10Speaker 5: sure enough a buck came sneaking in and we put
- 5:14Speaker 5: our boots on through the crocs in the trailer and
- 5:19Speaker 5: scampered up a little butte and she shot him, and
- 5:21Speaker 5: then we went down, got the dogs, went back up,
- 5:25Speaker 5: packed him out.
- 5:26Speaker 6: Excellent, but it was nice and you still camp there.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We did.
- 5:29Speaker 5: We camped there that night and then went up to
- 5:32Speaker 5: the bar and we went to the bar, we had service,
- 5:34Speaker 5: and we got a text that my buddy had killed
- 5:36Speaker 5: a bull. So the next day we packed up the
- 5:37Speaker 5: camper and went and helped him pack out his bowl. Awesome,
- 5:41Speaker 5: and then camped again. Dogs had a good weekend. I
- 5:44Speaker 5: did two.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It's good. That sounds like a great little weekend.
- 5:46Speaker 5: We sawsold a lot of country, a lot of critters.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Did your wife take your name? She did? My wife's
- 5:51Speaker 2: been real. She's kicking around again, weirdly, in another effort
- 5:55Speaker 2: to lead me along, has been musing lately on getting
- 5:58Speaker 2: around and finally changing her name after sixteen years of marriage.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Sydney said she would not do it again, only because
- 6:05Speaker 5: of the bureaucratic headache.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Is she gonna undo it?
- 6:08Speaker 5: No? No, no, it's just the actual act of changing
- 6:11Speaker 5: it was the hurdle for her.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the missus, my lovely, beautiful wife, said I'll do
- 6:17Speaker 2: it when my passport expires because that seems like a pain.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And then I've been waiting sixteen years. I don't know
- 6:22Speaker 2: how many passport renewals we've been through, and she has
- 6:25Speaker 2: and then the other day. She was like, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 2: maybe I will change it. And then I told my daughter,
- 6:29Speaker 2: if she she can, but you don't trying to build up.
- 6:33Speaker 6: Have you gotten more sore about it over the years,
- 6:35Speaker 6: I get.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Sore and sore all the time. And now I look
- 6:38Speaker 2: very hypocritical because I told my wife or I told
- 6:40Speaker 2: my daughter, don't change your name.
- 6:42Speaker 5: We actually thought about both changing our names to my
- 6:46Speaker 5: mother's maybe name, which is just cool.
- 6:49Speaker 2: It's cool multu, it's Norwegian. I thought, Man, it was cool.
- 6:52Speaker 5: But then I didn't want to go through the hassle
- 6:54Speaker 5: of all that and explain it to people.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Uh, Brody, you just did a woodcock hunt in Pennsylvania.
- 6:58Speaker 2: That's pretty exciting. Did you bring me one?
- 7:00Speaker 6: Id we ate them all? They're pretty small.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 6: Yeah, we were back in the the I was back
- 7:05Speaker 6: in my old stomping grounds at Penn State for the
- 7:07Speaker 6: tailgate tour. Yep, And uh it was great. It was
- 7:11Speaker 6: so much fun. Like we hit the migration right like
- 7:14Speaker 6: they're just everywhere, and we had a good, very good
- 7:16Speaker 6: bird dog, a lot of shooting, a lot of missing
- 7:20Speaker 6: and uh, it was cool when we were kids. When
- 7:22Speaker 6: I was a kid, the only time I ever shot
- 7:25Speaker 6: at a Woodcock was when I was hunting something else,
- 7:27Speaker 6: like we didn't target them, so this is like the
- 7:29Speaker 6: first time. It was like we're after woodcock and we
- 7:33Speaker 6: got into him. It was cool.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah, when you hit the migration, it's awesome.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 5: I saw I saw a clip from that and it
- 7:39Speaker 5: was impressive shooting.
- 7:40Speaker 6: Yeah, well what you saw, I saw the highlight. I
- 7:43Speaker 6: guess there's a lot of unimpressive shooting too.
- 7:47Speaker 2: My main My main update, Uh, we went Kyle Column
- 7:50Speaker 2: there day, which was fun. We did good and then
- 7:52Speaker 2: me and my little boy. My little boy had a
- 7:54Speaker 2: buddy at school that wanted They had like asked him
- 7:57Speaker 2: about getting jerky, so we made. For the first time
- 8:01Speaker 2: in my life, I made the ground meat jerky, which
- 8:05Speaker 2: I've always been skeptical because like, why'd you grind it?
- 8:10Speaker 2: And then you know what I mean, right, It's like
- 8:11Speaker 2: why go through all the hassle? We made ground meat jerky,
- 8:15Speaker 2: checked around for recipes from friends, and made jerky. But
- 8:19Speaker 2: this I had cut with about twenty percent fat. M
- 8:24Speaker 2: That is some when you remove all the moisture and
- 8:27Speaker 2: the fat doesn't go anywhere. It is some greasy jerky.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Not the best, but I've hit on something. My next
- 8:36Speaker 2: batch is gonna be revolutionary hmm, because I am going
- 8:40Speaker 2: to do it again. And I'm going to grind in
- 8:42Speaker 2: a bunch of dried cherries.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Oh and I am gonna make Pemmican style.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Yes, are you going to go? You should do it
- 8:50Speaker 6: with burger that doesn't have fat cut into it. Maybe no, no.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Because then it wouldn't be Pemmican. I am going to
- 8:56Speaker 2: reinvent I am. I am in the process of reining
- 9:01Speaker 2: old school Pemmican. Just wait and watch. Joining us really
- 9:09Speaker 2: quick before our next segment.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Don't forget to write in questions for their listener feedback.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Get halfway through the show and the end of the show.
- 9:15Speaker 3: This is Steve's here. Got a question for Steve put
- 9:18Speaker 3: in the live chat.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And I just launched the new big thing. How are
- 9:22Speaker 2: we doing on time? Were good?
- 9:23Speaker 7: Oh?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Great, there's the thing we're launching.
- 9:26Speaker 5: It's called as of seven minutes ago.
- 9:28Speaker 7: No.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I thought about it last night in bed. Okay, well,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I thought about two days ago. Then I then I
- 9:34Speaker 2: quit thinking. I'll explain the whole thing.
- 9:35Speaker 7: Yep.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Making this jerky got me thinking about a great jerky
- 9:38Speaker 2: a jerky contest. It's gonna be called me Eater's Best
- 9:41Speaker 2: GD scosh darn of course, Meet Eater's Best GD Jerky Tournament.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I thought, everybody will send in jerky and then on
- 9:51Speaker 2: live will rate it, and then we'll put together a
- 9:54Speaker 2: huge prize package for who wins. But then I got
- 9:57Speaker 2: to thinking, am I really gonna eat jerky that shows
- 9:59Speaker 2: up in the mail? So then I abandoned the idea.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Then it hit me, you come here and present your jerky.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I watch you eat it, and then I know it's
- 10:19Speaker 2: okay for me to eat it. Then we eat the
- 10:22Speaker 2: jerky and rate it in front of you, and we'll
- 10:25Speaker 2: do let's say ten contestants over the course of a year,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and we'll put together a mega prize package. You're responsible
- 10:33Speaker 2: for getting yourself here. You come in, you join the show,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you present your jerky, your jerky gets raided, we crown
- 10:42Speaker 2: a champion at the end of twenty twenty five Me
- 10:45Speaker 2: Eater's Best GD Jerky turn at twenty twenty five, that
- 10:48Speaker 2: person gets a huge prize package.
- 10:50Speaker 6: There's some details that need to be sorted out.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I got them all in my head.
- 10:53Speaker 6: No you don't, and what if what if you run
- 10:56Speaker 6: into two people are here at two different times.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But they say they get scheduled.
- 11:00Speaker 6: They're both. Yeah, I'm saying, like you rate one, it's
- 11:04Speaker 6: the best jerky.
- 11:05Speaker 5: You've ever had.
- 11:06Speaker 6: You can't okay, it's you score it a nine point five. Okay,
- 11:10Speaker 6: Later in the tournament someone also scores a nine point five.
- 11:13Speaker 5: But you can't go back and revisit the first one
- 11:15Speaker 5: to get a good comparative.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I'll have him leave a piece because I already know
- 11:20Speaker 2: he does have all the details. It says, I already
- 11:22Speaker 2: know it's not been poisoned.
- 11:24Speaker 5: I mean, couldn't we just have to send in your email?
- 11:27Speaker 8: Crent?
- 11:28Speaker 2: Where do they send in to get this started?
- 11:33Speaker 1: I would say, Oh man, it's either meat eater at
- 11:36Speaker 1: the meeteater dot com or Radio at the meat eater
- 11:39Speaker 1: dot com.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Radio.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Yeah, radio, let's do radio.
- 11:42Speaker 8: Send in.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Send in your proposal your pitch to radio at the
- 11:51Speaker 2: meeater dot com. But title it subject line me Eater's
- 11:55Speaker 2: Best gd Jerky Tournament twenty five with a little apostrophe.
- 12:02Speaker 6: You should reiterate, don't send jerky here.
- 12:04Speaker 2: This is not where you send jerky. This is where
- 12:07Speaker 2: you say I have a great jerky recipe. I would
- 12:10Speaker 2: like to come in and present we scept ten.
- 12:15Speaker 3: In the check. He wants people to send jerky in
- 12:18Speaker 3: the mail.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I don't because I do, but I don't because I
- 12:21Speaker 2: don't want to get poisoned.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Yeah, if you just have a tester, like a like
- 12:25Speaker 5: a monarch in the olden days.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I guess I could have my kids eat it and
- 12:28Speaker 2: then bring it down the word.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Yes, we just need to find.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Also, we just like somebody could just send you some
- 12:37Speaker 6: old trapper or something. You be like, God, that's some
- 12:40Speaker 6: good jerk.
- 12:40Speaker 2: That's why they're gonna come and present.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Hm, okay, Meat Eater's Best gd Jerky Tournament twenty five.
- 12:46Speaker 2: We're gonna pick our ten favorite people. You gotta get
- 12:49Speaker 2: yourself here. You come in, you present your jerky. We're
- 12:52Speaker 2: gonna put together mega package. It's gonna include stuff hanging
- 12:56Speaker 2: on the walls in.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Here, first out, and we'll get.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Meat propers seeing equipment. I don't know. We got a
- 13:02Speaker 2: you can have a Canada. We got a big spin drift.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Not an official sponsor, but with some out there, well,
- 13:10Speaker 2: it'll be a great prize package. Joining us on the
- 13:15Speaker 2: line is John Kapowski, the mammologist, biologist and dean of
- 13:21Speaker 2: the Hobbe School of Environment and Natural Resources at the
- 13:24Speaker 2: University of Wyoming. Former me Eater podcast guest he was
- 13:28Speaker 2: on going way back in the Vault episode two five nine,
- 13:32Speaker 2: which was titled The Squirrel Doctor is in, Uh what
- 13:36Speaker 2: Weirdly what prompted this is a thing we're not going
- 13:41Speaker 2: to talk about exactly, but we're still I've been really
- 13:47Speaker 2: into this world with this word lately, which is an apothesis, Okay.
- 13:52Speaker 2: An apothesis is when you're fighting with someone and you
- 13:57Speaker 2: bring something up by saying you're not going to bring
- 13:59Speaker 2: it up, So you're gonna fight with your wife, and
- 14:03Speaker 2: you go and I'm not even gonna talk about what
- 14:05Speaker 2: happened on Friday. That'd be more like something my wife
- 14:08Speaker 2: will say to me. I'm gonna fight with my wife.
- 14:10Speaker 2: My wife says, and I'm not even gonna talk about
- 14:11Speaker 2: what happened on Friday. That's an apothesis. She's talking about
- 14:15Speaker 2: it by saying she's not gonna talk about it. We're
- 14:17Speaker 2: not gonna talk about Peanut, the squirrel whose euthanization by
- 14:26Speaker 2: New York's Department of Environmental Conservation has made international news.
- 14:32Speaker 2: This one up getting embroiled in the presidential election. The
- 14:39Speaker 2: left and the right are both up in arms about
- 14:41Speaker 2: it over peanut. But again, we are not gonna talk
- 14:45Speaker 2: about Peanut the squirrel. Rather, rather we're gonna talk about
- 14:53Speaker 2: handful squirrel things. We're gonna lead off John with how
- 14:59Speaker 2: in the hell, how in the world have fifty new
- 15:03Speaker 2: squirrel species been discovered in the past decade, And is
- 15:06Speaker 2: this the kind of thing where they were discovered or
- 15:10Speaker 2: did we already know about them and then realize they
- 15:13Speaker 2: were a teats a bit different than other squirrels we
- 15:15Speaker 2: knew about.
- 15:18Speaker 7: Well, thanks so much, Steve, great to be here. We
- 15:21Speaker 7: will not mention peanut rest in peace. And I'm a
- 15:27Speaker 7: bit mythed right now. I just want to say I
- 15:29Speaker 7: thought I was coming on for the regretful tattoos.
- 15:33Speaker 6: We can jump to that and willing.
- 15:35Speaker 7: To give it. Let's do it. When we think about
- 15:39Speaker 7: squirrels and diversity, last time we talked for about two
- 15:42Speaker 7: hundred and eighty species that are recognized. We're about three
- 15:46Speaker 7: hundred and twenty five right now. And it's a little
- 15:50Speaker 7: of both. Some of these are you know, as we
- 15:52Speaker 7: get genetic techniques and people are looking a little more closely,
- 15:56Speaker 7: or they're looking at the calls at different species, realize
- 16:00Speaker 7: that that something we previously lumped in as a single
- 16:04Speaker 7: species might be split a bit. And that's that accounts
- 16:09Speaker 7: for about half of those new squirrels. And then there
- 16:13Speaker 7: really are some new squirrels that are are completely new
- 16:16Speaker 7: to science that are are being described some really cool
- 16:21Speaker 7: giant flying squirrels about the size of a garbage can
- 16:26Speaker 7: lids for instance.
- 16:29Speaker 2: No, wait, really, see that's what I was talking about.
- 16:31Speaker 2: See I was, I was, I was like ship talking
- 16:33Speaker 2: you earlier.
- 16:36Speaker 7: You always do.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I was like, love the guy, Love the guy, but
- 16:39Speaker 2: he's gonna give us a bunch of stuff about them
- 16:41Speaker 2: realizing there's all these different pine squirrels that they didn't
- 16:44Speaker 2: realize that they thought were the same thing. But now
- 16:46Speaker 2: we're onto something new, okay, like legit stuff that we
- 16:50Speaker 2: didn't know about. That that's that's exciting to hear.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Yep, exactly. And and I still geek out over the
- 16:57Speaker 7: you know, the subdividing of things that we are he knew.
- 17:00Speaker 7: But quite seriously, these are species that in one case,
- 17:05Speaker 7: one was found in a market in Southeast Asia, and
- 17:10Speaker 7: that's what prompted people to say, what is this. They
- 17:13Speaker 7: went up in the mountains, found another kind of the
- 17:16Speaker 7: brand new species.
- 17:18Speaker 2: The large Himalayan flying squirrel is it is it of?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Is it of like a very small population and so
- 17:26Speaker 2: it's not widely known or is it a like a
- 17:29Speaker 2: big widespread, thriving population of these squirrels.
- 17:33Speaker 7: It's it's probably fairly widespread because it's relatively new. Folks
- 17:39Speaker 7: are just starting to get the sense of how widespread
- 17:42Speaker 7: they are. But when you think of the Himalayas, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 7: like many mountaintops here in the Rockies, you get these
- 17:49Speaker 7: sky islands and often kind of left behind on those
- 17:53Speaker 7: are some species that were left behind in the recession
- 17:56Speaker 7: of the glaciers in the last Ice Age. The Himalayas are,
- 18:02Speaker 7: you know, obviously a very prominent range of mountains and
- 18:06Speaker 7: not much work has gone on there, and they've got
- 18:09Speaker 7: species that actually live in cracks in crevices there and
- 18:14Speaker 7: they glide between cliffs and then feed on the few
- 18:18Speaker 7: trees that are there. So these are species that are
- 18:20Speaker 7: about tree line in many cases, and so when we're
- 18:26Speaker 7: when we're looking at them, we know that they've most
- 18:29Speaker 7: of There are three species that have been very recently described,
- 18:33Speaker 7: and all of them there have been multiple individuals reported.
- 18:40Speaker 7: I just this morning got a camera trap photo from
- 18:45Speaker 7: Nepal where they said, hey, we've got another one and
- 18:48Speaker 7: it's a little bit of a range extension probably and
- 18:52Speaker 7: that kind of thing. So we're just learning. And that's
- 18:55Speaker 7: what's so fun about this. You know, when any of
- 18:57Speaker 7: us who are interested in biodiversity, interested in wildlife, something
- 19:02Speaker 7: like squirrels, you think you know everything about. We find
- 19:05Speaker 7: out there's all kinds of neat stuff going on that
- 19:07Speaker 7: we had no idea.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Karin have mentioned that she had spoken with you about
- 19:13Speaker 2: a flying squirrel that can fluoresce. Yes, what's up with this?
- 19:19Speaker 7: So these are the common flying squirrels that you'll see
- 19:22Speaker 7: throughout North America. Well, and they actually fluoresce under black light,
- 19:33Speaker 7: under UV light, and they have like blue ears pink
- 19:37Speaker 7: stripes on them. A professor in Wisconsin was out with
- 19:43Speaker 7: a black light on a UV light kind of spotlighting
- 19:47Speaker 7: one evening and something flew across his field of vision
- 19:52Speaker 7: in the light and it was pink and blue. And
- 19:55Speaker 7: it turns out that a number of species and we
- 19:58Speaker 7: have absolutely no idea why fluoresse, and it's not just
- 20:03Speaker 7: kind of a single color that you think, Ah, that's
- 20:06Speaker 7: something that's probably not all that meaningful. They actually fluoresce
- 20:10Speaker 7: with multiple colors in different parts of the body with
- 20:13Speaker 7: a pattern, so tells you something funky is going on.
- 20:17Speaker 7: And we've actually learned recently the last decade or two,
- 20:21Speaker 7: that a lot of birds do the same thing. The
- 20:23Speaker 7: colors that we see very different than the colors that
- 20:26Speaker 7: birds see when they're because they're able to detect things
- 20:31Speaker 7: in that UV those UV wavelengths. So all kinds of
- 20:35Speaker 7: crazy stuff going on is why I stay with squirrels.
- 20:39Speaker 2: You know. Years ago I had a conversation with a
- 20:42Speaker 2: turkey biologist named Robert Abernathy, and we were talking about
- 20:45Speaker 2: the fluorescent qualities or sorry not not for the iridescent
- 20:50Speaker 2: qualities of turkey feathers, and he was speculating, we don't
- 20:54Speaker 2: really know that perhaps a turkey to another like a
- 20:59Speaker 2: turkey experience, seriences the appearance of another turkey in a
- 21:02Speaker 2: way that humans do not, Meaning it might be just
- 21:07Speaker 2: this bright thing that just pops out right, and when
- 21:10Speaker 2: you look at it, you see a drab bird when
- 21:13Speaker 2: they look at their like todah, you know, a turkey.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Right, yeah, exactly. And when you think of things that
- 21:21Speaker 7: are predators of turkeys, they're things that don't see kind
- 21:25Speaker 7: of in that that visual spectrum, and so they're able
- 21:29Speaker 7: to convey messages to other birds, possible mates. Maybe it's
- 21:34Speaker 7: something related to territoriality, but you know what kind of
- 21:38Speaker 7: condition they're in, and other species may not be able
- 21:42Speaker 7: to pick those things up quite as well.
- 21:44Speaker 9: So you know.
- 21:47Speaker 7: These things are when you see patterns like that, they're
- 21:51Speaker 7: very likely adaptations, right that just you know, help them
- 21:54Speaker 7: in the you know, survival of the fittest battle.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Now, John, we do a thing on the show in
- 22:01Speaker 2: our network called a rut report where we get into
- 22:04Speaker 2: white tailed, the white tail deer rut calendar, the breeding
- 22:08Speaker 2: cycle calendar. I understand that the squirrel rut is coming
- 22:13Speaker 2: up next month. My friend Kevin Murphy, who I like
- 22:18Speaker 2: to call him the world's greatest small game hunter, has
- 22:20Speaker 2: described to me finding what he calls a rut tree
- 22:26Speaker 2: where he catches the squirrel rut activity going on, and
- 22:29Speaker 2: he can he'll talk about seeing seven or eight males
- 22:33Speaker 2: chasing after a single female. I have here in front
- 22:36Speaker 2: of me that you've bet you've seen rout trees containing
- 22:41Speaker 2: thirty to forty males in pursuit of a female. Yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 2: that's like a barn anchorage.
- 22:48Speaker 5: The long long odds there.
- 22:51Speaker 7: Well, exactly, And it's all because most squirrels are the
- 22:56Speaker 7: females are only in heat for about half a day,
- 22:59Speaker 7: and so that is your chance. And because squirrels have
- 23:05Speaker 7: an incredible sense of smell. We know, you know a
- 23:08Speaker 7: lot of tree squirrels. That's how they're in part relocating
- 23:11Speaker 7: nuts that they buried. That's a lot of their social
- 23:15Speaker 7: behaviors is tied to picking up scent fruiting trees, like
- 23:20Speaker 7: a walnut tree that's in fruit. They pick that up
- 23:22Speaker 7: by scent. They pick up females who about five days
- 23:26Speaker 7: before they're five days before they go in into estris,
- 23:31Speaker 7: and the day of there are often dozens of males
- 23:36Speaker 7: waiting outside the female's nest cavity in a tree or
- 23:41Speaker 7: when those leaf nests, those drays, and so I've seen
- 23:44Speaker 7: up to forty five males chasing a single female. Long
- 23:49Speaker 7: day for everyone involved. There, I'm guessing, and.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Yeah, exciting day. Can you do me a favorite I
- 23:56Speaker 2: don't want to bring you know, I hope no one
- 23:58Speaker 2: else is listening to this idea because I want to
- 24:01Speaker 2: keep it to my own. Can you get me some
- 24:06Speaker 2: squirrel and heat urine. Has anyone thought to dip a
- 24:12Speaker 2: cotton ball in that and then just peg it up
- 24:14Speaker 2: on a tree and then just sit and hunt.
- 24:19Speaker 7: So it's actually not it doesn't appear to be in urine.
- 24:22Speaker 7: You have to you have to swipe the private parts
- 24:24Speaker 7: of the female and that's that's where it's exuded from.
- 24:29Speaker 2: So everything gets the name complication. And you got a
- 24:36Speaker 2: half day to do it.
- 24:38Speaker 9: That's right, So you gotta be quick and convincing once again.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Uh. John Kapowski joining us from the Hobbes School of
- 24:53Speaker 2: Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming, and
- 24:58Speaker 2: want to applaud John for doing the work that so
- 25:03Speaker 2: many scientists just get. They just don't want to do
- 25:07Speaker 2: it because it doesn't work out. Sometimes it does the
- 25:09Speaker 2: work of interpreting science for idiots. Thank you, John.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Probably not how he'd phrasy.
- 25:19Speaker 2: But it's how he thinks about it, and a lot
- 25:25Speaker 2: of and a lot of researchers just get and I
- 25:27Speaker 2: understand when they get there, they get to where they
- 25:29Speaker 2: just can't bring themselves to do it anymore. But John
- 25:32Speaker 2: is a great sport about coming in and talking about
- 25:36Speaker 2: squirrel biology squirrel ecology in a way that folks at
- 25:41Speaker 2: home can understand it. So when you look out a
- 25:43Speaker 2: window and you can see a squirrel, you can you
- 25:45Speaker 2: can look to your husband or wife and be like,
- 25:48Speaker 2: did you know right, and tell them good stuff about squirrels.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Thank you very much, John, I really appreciate you. Coming on, man,
- 25:55Speaker 2: we're gonna jump into tattoos. I regret, So, John, drop
- 25:59Speaker 2: your pants. I'm joking. He's not he's not joining us.
- 26:03Speaker 2: He's not. He's not the tattoo holder. But he can
- 26:06Speaker 2: stay on the line if he wants to see about
- 26:08Speaker 2: the tattoos. I regret. These are good ones.
- 26:10Speaker 3: So this came in wet to do the sound. There's
- 26:14Speaker 3: no arrested development fans here at the hop.
- 26:16Speaker 10: I like that.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yeah that that that's not your best work.
- 26:20Speaker 3: I'll replace it next time you need a segment.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Uh. This one comes in from northwest Arkansas, which doesn't
- 26:28Speaker 2: surprise me.
- 26:29Speaker 5: No.
- 26:30Speaker 6: I thought that was very predictible, not even a little bit.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Uh.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Okay, he goes the tattoo holder. That's not even the
- 26:40Speaker 2: good one.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Phil, Oh, which one are we looking at? I'm looking
- 26:44Speaker 3: at the first one. These are on the same guy, right, Oh, yeah,
- 26:46Speaker 3: we can show the the other one next I just
- 26:48Speaker 3: want to talk about this.
- 26:49Speaker 2: We'll do it one time.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Read the email and describe.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'm a hunter from northwest Arkansas. I like he's very
- 26:57Speaker 2: careful word choice he uses. I wouldn't say I regret
- 27:01Speaker 2: my tattoos. I got the duck Life one at eighteen
- 27:05Speaker 2: and I'm twenty nine now. I got the Goose one
- 27:08Speaker 2: a couple of months ago. I would picture that it
- 27:12Speaker 2: would be the opposite. Oh no, to me, it looks
- 27:17Speaker 2: like you'd have got that goose when he was three and.
- 27:21Speaker 6: Then got the We can't talk about the goose until people.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, okay, I got the Goose one a couple
- 27:28Speaker 2: months ago. Mainly my arm is a joke to my
- 27:30Speaker 2: duck hunting buddies. Now, oh well, hope y'all like her.
- 27:33Speaker 6: That's the best part.
- 27:34Speaker 7: I like.
- 27:35Speaker 6: I like that the most because he just seems resigned
- 27:37Speaker 6: to his fate.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You know, he's just like.
- 27:39Speaker 5: I think the duck Life one is trying too hard.
- 27:42Speaker 3: This one is genuinely bad. Here's the Goose one. I
- 27:45Speaker 3: love it.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I love it. This is shirt a T shirt with
- 27:48Speaker 2: people for people that can't that aren't seen. We're talking
- 27:51Speaker 2: about Duck Life has got three puddle ducks, three mallards, whatever,
- 27:55Speaker 2: three ducks. I don't know till they are cupped up,
- 27:57Speaker 2: cupped up, feed out coming in the land I need.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It's like a little pattern of three ducks. On one
- 28:01Speaker 2: side it says duck. On the other side it says
- 28:04Speaker 2: life coming. You gotta make duck life what I okay?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Then the other one, the other one is a silhouette
- 28:10Speaker 2: of a Canada goose who's got like seven feathers.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Looks like it was drawn by a small child.
- 28:17Speaker 2: He's got eight feathers, and it says, you're honking for
- 28:23Speaker 2: a bonkin'.
- 28:26Speaker 5: I love that one.
- 28:28Speaker 2: So what I like about Duck Life's wear is duck
- 28:31Speaker 2: Life is versatile because if he gets where he stops
- 28:35Speaker 2: hunting ducks and just gets generally burned out on life,
- 28:40Speaker 2: he just needs to have the d turned to an.
- 28:42Speaker 5: F yep, yep, I had the same thought.
- 28:45Speaker 2: And and he's got a whole new tattoo, well, a whole
- 28:47Speaker 2: new meaning. And it's like getting two tattoos for the
- 28:50Speaker 2: price of one.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Or if he gets really into whitetail hunting, he could
- 28:54Speaker 6: go buck life and really.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Just every week in there, every week draw lining with
- 29:00Speaker 2: a sharpie and it's a buck life.
- 29:03Speaker 3: So say that the font choices is uh not what
- 29:05Speaker 3: you want. I don't like this font at all.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Or he could become a spokesman for buck knives and
- 29:11Speaker 2: have it be.
- 29:12Speaker 5: Buck knife yep.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 29:14Speaker 2: So that tattoo has versatility.
- 29:18Speaker 11: It's also huge.
- 29:20Speaker 2: You're honking for a bonkin. I don't know.
- 29:26Speaker 6: I need to know more.
- 29:29Speaker 3: I like it. If it's like high step and it's
- 29:30Speaker 3: putting its foot forward, No.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I think that he I think that the goose isn't honking.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I think he's saying to the geese geese in general,
- 29:44Speaker 2: when they come and they hank and he's hunting and
- 29:45Speaker 2: they're honking, he's saying. He's thinking himself, uh, you're honking
- 29:50Speaker 2: for a bonka.
- 29:51Speaker 5: So he's addressing the goose there. I took that as
- 29:54Speaker 5: the goose to be addressing the the a viewer of
- 29:58Speaker 5: the tattoo.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I thought it because the goose is saying to his
- 30:03Speaker 2: some guy in the bar. Some guy in the bar
- 30:06Speaker 2: is talking a bunch of whatever. Yeah, they're arguing about
- 30:08Speaker 2: a turtle soup recipe, which is I bring it up
- 30:10Speaker 2: only because Johnny Paycheck shot a man, literally shot a
- 30:14Speaker 2: man in the head in an argument about a turtle root.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Led the scene afterwards, didn't.
- 30:18Speaker 2: He fled the scene kind of missed creased his head. Anyways,
- 30:23Speaker 2: They're in a fight about a turtle soup recipe. For instance,
- 30:25Speaker 2: he holds up his arm to the guy he's fighting with.
- 30:28Speaker 2: The guy sees the arm and he's like, oh, that's me.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I'm honking for a bonking fear though, and then the
- 30:35Speaker 2: guy also his last thought before catching the fists, his
- 30:38Speaker 2: last thought is, but why is there a goose on there?
- 30:42Speaker 5: This is this is one of those facts I forget
- 30:45Speaker 5: about myself for three or four years at a time.
- 30:47Speaker 5: But when I was three, Uh, a goose broke my toe.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 30:52Speaker 6: They can be mean, I know.
- 30:54Speaker 5: So that's like he might think, Oh, yeah, goose can
- 30:57Speaker 5: be mean. He's telling you when the fist comes.
- 31:00Speaker 6: To mean that he knocked one down in some grain
- 31:02Speaker 6: field and needed to go out there and bonk it. Oh,
- 31:08Speaker 6: who knows.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Only the tattoo artists art they No one knows.
- 31:14Speaker 3: We have multiple people in the chat saying that if
- 31:16Speaker 3: we put the goose one on merch, they would buy
- 31:19Speaker 3: multiple copies. Honk people love it. People say it's elite.
- 31:23Speaker 3: They want, they want it on shirts.
- 31:25Speaker 2: It's elite, it's elitist.
- 31:27Speaker 5: No, no, no, it's just it's high level.
- 31:29Speaker 3: This is this is just a gen Z lingo.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Oh gotch Yeah, I like that.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I recently got a good lecture on gen Z. But
- 31:35Speaker 2: they didn't talking about that one. That that lingo. Here's
- 31:38Speaker 2: the next one. Now this next one, Randon, do you
- 31:41Speaker 2: might grabbing the painting?
- 31:42Speaker 5: I'd love to.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Actually, one of my favorite pieces of artwork of all
- 31:46Speaker 2: time is from Clay Nuclem. He drew when he was
- 31:49Speaker 2: a teenager, and it's a future space man.
- 31:52Speaker 6: Did you see that, Phil.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Yeah, pointed at that this camera. Yeah, there we go.
- 31:56Speaker 2: It's a future space man. You know what's fun? Clay
- 32:00Speaker 2: was taught we were moose hunting, and Clay's telling me
- 32:02Speaker 2: about what he used to like to draw. He liked
- 32:04Speaker 2: to draw like future spacemen, but he also liked to
- 32:07Speaker 2: draw wild hogs. So here a while, a big, huge
- 32:10Speaker 2: boar is charging a future space man who's fixing the
- 32:14Speaker 2: gun it down.
- 32:15Speaker 6: If that's a spaceman, why has he got like a
- 32:18Speaker 6: Superheen Arthur armor on?
- 32:21Speaker 2: I don't know, but anyway, there's a lot of questions
- 32:23Speaker 2: Clay then called his mom and said with me. I
- 32:26Speaker 2: was with him. He called his mom, Hey, you know
- 32:28Speaker 2: that picture I drew of the She's like, oh yeah,
- 32:31Speaker 2: and had it, so now we have it framed in
- 32:35Speaker 2: the office. We got a tattoo of someone basically having
- 32:39Speaker 2: a sort of truncated, more contained such scene. His note
- 32:47Speaker 2: is when I was eighteen, I wanted to get my
- 32:49Speaker 2: first tattoo, and being an avid bird hunter at the
- 32:52Speaker 2: time and shooting a Browning shotgun, there was only one
- 32:55Speaker 2: logical idea, the Browning buck mark. I made it appointment.
- 33:01Speaker 2: I got digressed for a second. I used to work
- 33:03Speaker 2: with a guy when I worked for my buddy Ronnie.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I worked with a guy that was preparing to get
- 33:10Speaker 2: the Bacardi bat tattoo.
- 33:11Speaker 6: I've seen that one before.
- 33:14Speaker 2: His brother once set a sentence to me that I'll
- 33:16Speaker 2: never forget. His brother said to me, you know, when
- 33:20Speaker 2: you're drinking Bacardi so fast, you get the red splatches
- 33:23Speaker 2: on your neck tobacco. When I was eighteen, I wanted
- 33:30Speaker 2: to get my first tattoo, and being an avid bird
- 33:32Speaker 2: hunter at the time and shooting a Brownie shotgun, there
- 33:34Speaker 2: was only one logical idea, the Browning buck mark. I
- 33:38Speaker 2: made an appointment with my brother's longtime tattoo artist and
- 33:43Speaker 2: got the tattoo on the upper portion of my left arm.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Since then, the browning buck mark has become synonymous with
- 33:51Speaker 2: red neckery and overall douche baggery. I've regretted that tattoo
- 33:56Speaker 2: for almost twenty years. See, I didn't know that the
- 33:59Speaker 2: browning mark was a widespread tattoo.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Amongst a certain segment of the population.
- 34:05Speaker 2: I've regretted that too. I've regretted that tattoo for almost
- 34:08Speaker 2: twenty years. I finally decided to get a cover up
- 34:12Speaker 2: so I could once again be proud to show my
- 34:15Speaker 2: upper arm. I have one more session on the cover up.
- 34:19Speaker 2: The Nordic the Nordic god Friar is that how he says?
- 34:24Speaker 6: It's Frere?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Oh, this is interesting. The Nordic god Freer, from which
- 34:31Speaker 2: my last name is derived. Pictures included Love the podcast
- 34:36Speaker 2: and the other podcast on the network Keep It Up
- 34:40Speaker 2: and It is a Nordic god similar in style to
- 34:47Speaker 2: Clay's future space Man. The more decidedly period. It's not
- 34:52Speaker 2: a confusing period. He's carrying a broad sword that comes
- 34:57Speaker 2: up to his navel.
- 34:59Speaker 6: He's got a pig, and he.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Has sort of I gather with him.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Yeah, it doesn't seem to be an adversarial relations.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Well, that's not any old pig. That's Gullen Bursty, the
- 35:12Speaker 5: golden mained pig, created by the sons of Vivaldi, the
- 35:16Speaker 5: famous dwarf craftsman. I didn't know that Freer rides Gullan
- 35:23Speaker 5: Birsty into battle.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Oh interestingly in battle?
- 35:26Speaker 6: Yeah, interestingly enough.
- 35:27Speaker 5: The sons of Vivaldi also made for for uh skied Blaneer,
- 35:32Speaker 5: the famous ship that always has a favorable breeze and
- 35:35Speaker 5: can be folded together and carried in a pouch when
- 35:37Speaker 5: not in use.
- 35:38Speaker 2: How do you know all that looked it up. Here's
- 35:42Speaker 2: the problem. I don't want to hack on him because
- 35:43Speaker 2: here's the deal. I think where he's when he talks
- 35:46Speaker 2: about the tattoo he regrets he's talking about the one
- 35:49Speaker 2: that was hiding under there. Sure, yeah, So just I
- 35:54Speaker 2: don't want to hack on this one because I because
- 35:57Speaker 2: you know, I could spoil the relationship.
- 35:59Speaker 5: This is this is the after, this is the glow up.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm gonna say like, I'm gonna say this,
- 36:04Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, good lord, I like that tattoo.
- 36:09Speaker 6: I don't think there's anything to regret about that one.
- 36:11Speaker 6: He put a lot of thought into that one.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Yeah, And I like that hog in the background, but
- 36:15Speaker 2: I mean, come on, tusks. Those are big tusks.
- 36:18Speaker 5: Yep.
- 36:19Speaker 2: My old man killed a hog in Arkansas, and when
- 36:23Speaker 2: he got the hog, the hog stuffed. I'm gonna get
- 36:26Speaker 2: this hog and bring it home me someday. When he
- 36:27Speaker 2: got the hog stuffed, he did that thing that you
- 36:31Speaker 2: used to do where you barely, you know what, You
- 36:33Speaker 2: pull the tusks out, but then you glue them back in.
- 36:36Speaker 2: When you're all done, you barely stick it out there,
- 36:39Speaker 2: and do it so all the root right, like most
- 36:43Speaker 2: like three two thirds of the tusk is doesn't stick
- 36:46Speaker 2: about the gum line. But you fell it full of
- 36:48Speaker 2: hot glue and just barely stick the tusk in there.
- 36:51Speaker 2: And it looks like some apparition from hell.
- 36:53Speaker 6: You get a couple out of them.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so this thing's got these tusts, You're like,
- 36:56Speaker 2: it looks like a warhog.
- 36:57Speaker 5: It's like when my skull caps fall off the shelf
- 36:59Speaker 5: and I have to epoxy him back together, and I
- 37:03Speaker 5: wang the antlers out another two or three and hold.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Them out and give another inch of hide and hold
- 37:08Speaker 2: them out. Yeah for sure, all right, fantastic tattoo. If
- 37:13Speaker 2: you could ever do me the favor of taking a
- 37:15Speaker 2: picture of that tattoo. What's this gentleman's name, Russ? Russ,
- 37:20Speaker 2: If you could do me a picture and send it
- 37:22Speaker 2: to us, take a picture of your tattoo and then
- 37:25Speaker 2: go in and highlight where the old tattoo is hiding.
- 37:28Speaker 5: Yeah, that would be very interesting.
- 37:30Speaker 3: But that makes it a pretty good cover up because
- 37:32Speaker 3: we can't tell.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Oh, you, I don't know what's a cover up. And
- 37:35Speaker 2: like when that guy gets, you know, f life, I
- 37:37Speaker 2: don't know that I'll think it's a cover up either.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I wonder why I had ducks in it.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Yeah, the ducks are just they're taking off for greener past.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the ducks are leaving life. Yes, going to the afterlife.
- 37:48Speaker 2: We're gonna cut down to a rut report from Yanni
- 37:52Speaker 2: Uh the lavr Lover the Lava and Eagle, Yanni Chimani
- 37:57Speaker 2: just Yanni Jannis Janice Uh in Louisiana. They can't the
- 38:02Speaker 2: Cajuns cannot say, ye, honest, they can't. They the Cajuns
- 38:09Speaker 2: had to eventually arrive at that he is just ja.
- 38:13Speaker 2: It doesn't work. There's something about being a Cajun that
- 38:18Speaker 2: makes it that not only can you not remember it,
- 38:21Speaker 2: you can't say it.
- 38:24Speaker 5: They'd be like, you know, we all have our own challenges.
- 38:28Speaker 3: This is actually a double reperport. We've got Mark Kenyon
- 38:31Speaker 3: first and then yes, oh I'm sorry, yeah, double the content.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Okay, but before that.
- 38:37Speaker 6: Well we should tell run.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Can't believe it's already here.
- 38:41Speaker 11: Kenn's gonna tell you what should dude protects you bye,
- 38:47Speaker 11: because you're what the kids goodbye. Don't decide to desert you.
- 38:56Speaker 5: What a gift.
- 38:57Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Here's the reperport.
- 39:00Speaker 10: Hey, guys, Mark Kenyan here with Wired to Hunt, and
- 39:03Speaker 10: I'm coming at you with the rut report for November seventh.
- 39:07Speaker 10: And I'm here hunting in Kentucky, just kicked off a
- 39:10Speaker 10: hunt and the whitetail rut should be on now.
- 39:13Speaker 12: I haven't seen sign of it yet myself, but all.
- 39:16Speaker 10: Reports I'm hearing from across the country are that dose
- 39:18Speaker 10: are coming into heat, bucks are chasing, bucks are cruising.
- 39:22Speaker 2: It's on.
- 39:23Speaker 10: November seventh, is the day that a lot of folks
- 39:25Speaker 10: claim to be maybe the very best day of the
- 39:27Speaker 10: entire white tail rut, and this next week or so
- 39:30Speaker 10: should be absolutely lights out for almost the entire country.
- 39:34Speaker 10: There are some places down in the South that have
- 39:35Speaker 10: slightly different running dates, but for most.
- 39:37Speaker 12: Folks listening, this is it.
- 39:40Speaker 10: This is the Super Bowl user vacation time, use up
- 39:43Speaker 10: the brownie points in the bank. Whatever you need to
- 39:45Speaker 10: do to be in the tree, do it now. An
- 39:47Speaker 10: important thing to note for large parts of the country.
- 39:50Speaker 10: Right now we are seeing warmer than average temperatures and
- 39:53Speaker 10: there's definitely some rain going on too, so less than
- 39:56Speaker 10: ideal conditions. But you need to know that despite these
- 39:59Speaker 10: conditions that maybe aren't great, the rut is still happening
- 40:03Speaker 10: and good action is out there to be had.
- 40:06Speaker 12: The midday might be a.
- 40:07Speaker 10: Little bit slower, but be in a tree, be in
- 40:09Speaker 10: the key, rut spots downwindo doll, betting areas, pinch points, funnels.
- 40:14Speaker 10: Tree time is key, so do not let the bad
- 40:16Speaker 10: weather keep you home.
- 40:18Speaker 2: This is it. Anything is possible.
- 40:20Speaker 10: Time in the tree, time in the tree, time in
- 40:23Speaker 10: the tree. Good luck out there.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Well, I started over, I got so distracted by Yonn
- 40:33Speaker 2: he cleared his nose, that I missed the part of
- 40:35Speaker 2: the rut report.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Okay, let's here it again.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Hold on, do people know that it's live? Mostly? Oh yeah,
- 40:45Speaker 2: because this isn't live. We just started it over again.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Well, the pre recorded videos are certainly not live, but
- 40:51Speaker 3: there should be a disclaimer. I don't think that's a
- 40:53Speaker 3: ship you're about to here is not live. Saturday Night
- 40:55Speaker 3: Live has lots of pre recorded videos. Anyway.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Here's y live, Time in the tree, Time in the tree.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Good luck out there.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Glad we got that mantra again.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Here's the ns RUT report for November sixth.
- 41:13Speaker 7: Uh.
- 41:14Speaker 1: First off, what you need to know is that I
- 41:16Speaker 1: picked the wrong spot today. I sat in that tree
- 41:25Speaker 1: right behind me for six hours this morning and did
- 41:29Speaker 1: not see a single beer. Beautiful morning here in central Wisconsin.
- 41:36Speaker 1: It started off at about forty degrees, it's now fifty.
- 41:40Speaker 1: The wind's blowing five to ten out of the north northwest.
- 41:47Speaker 1: I mean, really just a prime, prime morning for the RUT.
- 41:52Speaker 1: So although I didn't see any running myself, I'm on
- 41:57Speaker 1: sure that there's some running going on somewhere not too
- 42:01Speaker 1: far from me. I hunted a ridgetop today to be
- 42:06Speaker 1: in the woods and have a good spot for this
- 42:09Speaker 1: north wind. Just picked the wrong one. We just didn't
- 42:13Speaker 1: have the right buck come down that ridge behind me
- 42:18Speaker 1: right there, or that one right there. So anyways, I'm
- 42:24Speaker 1: changing spots right now. I'm gonna go hunt on a
- 42:28Speaker 1: very small ridge. It's very close to the neighbors fields
- 42:34Speaker 1: where we've had fifteen to twenty doze every single evening,
- 42:39Speaker 1: and I think there's been some bucks out there too,
- 42:42Speaker 1: but we've got pick pictures of the big box, a
- 42:47Speaker 1: couple of them daylighting. The cameras have been slow the
- 42:50Speaker 1: last two days because it's been raining. It's been wet, wet, wet, wet, wet.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Now it's dried out. The tempest drops ten to fifteen degrees,
- 43:00Speaker 1: so the next to the next two three days should
- 43:04Speaker 1: be phenomenal. And so my plan is for the evening
- 43:08Speaker 1: and probably most evenings, is to get down closer to
- 43:11Speaker 1: the food, which is gonna be closer to the doze,
- 43:14Speaker 1: which is gonna bring me a big buck encounter. So
- 43:18Speaker 1: hopefully that will happen. Maybe next week I can give
- 43:21Speaker 1: you a little bit more of an exciting report to
- 43:25Speaker 1: all of you out there sitting or about to be sitting.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Good luck, stick to it. It's gonna happen any moment.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Be oh, oh sweet, thank you, Yanni. I made the
- 43:39Speaker 2: really stupid mistake one day of looking at Yanni had
- 43:43Speaker 2: some posts on on Instagram, and I was looking at
- 43:45Speaker 2: the comments, and this woman's like freaking out on him
- 43:48Speaker 2: because he's gonna him talk and he's got family property Wisconsin.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Him talking about that's gonna make everybody in Wisconsin, everybody
- 43:54Speaker 2: start hunting Wisconsin.
- 43:57Speaker 12: What's this?
- 43:58Speaker 2: What's this strange fiftieth state I'm hearing about?
- 44:02Speaker 4: What is it?
- 44:02Speaker 2: W Yeah? Uh, we're gonna jump over now to our
- 44:09Speaker 2: interview around again. Oh what Krin put a whole tattoo
- 44:15Speaker 2: over the whole thing. I couldn't see what was going
- 44:16Speaker 2: on the document. I touched the document. Let's take a break.
- 44:21Speaker 2: I'm reading. Let's take a break for some listener feedback.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Phil, Let's do it. Okay, this one seems time sensitive.
- 44:29Speaker 3: It came in a while ago. But average human guys asking, Hey,
- 44:32Speaker 3: everyone's sitting in my ground blind for a buck, thinking
- 44:34Speaker 3: of going to pull a card from a camera down
- 44:36Speaker 3: and drainage after the pod? Should I hold off in
- 44:38Speaker 3: fear of scent or go check once? What would you do?
- 44:43Speaker 2: There's too many? I can't there's too many variables. I
- 44:45Speaker 2: can't say, does he gotta walk right past the spot
- 44:47Speaker 2: anyway that's true? Is it?
- 44:49Speaker 7: Like?
- 44:49Speaker 2: Uh? I can't. I don't know do it.
- 44:53Speaker 6: I wouldn't do it if that's where we're expecting to
- 44:55Speaker 6: see a buck. Stay out of there.
- 44:57Speaker 3: There you are, Eric's asking Steve to Claire fight your
- 45:00Speaker 3: turkey tattoo. You've talked about it a couple of times
- 45:02Speaker 3: in the past, but I wonder if you've come to
- 45:03Speaker 3: any sort of realization I want.
- 45:05Speaker 2: To do it. It's like, what I like is that
- 45:07Speaker 2: I like that me and my wife are the last
- 45:09Speaker 2: couple in America to have no tattoo.
- 45:11Speaker 6: Me and my wife don't have me either, second to last.
- 45:15Speaker 2: So I wanted to get and I stole this idea.
- 45:19Speaker 2: I want to get the outline of North America tattooed
- 45:24Speaker 2: and then either either get the spot's little turkey feet
- 45:31Speaker 2: tattooed on there where I killed my You know, I'm
- 45:35Speaker 2: a two time super slam holder, m where I killed
- 45:38Speaker 2: my super slams, or just put turkey feet everywhere I've
- 45:44Speaker 2: ever gotten any turkey at all.
- 45:46Speaker 6: I like that better.
- 45:48Speaker 2: My wife thinks it's a terrible idea. I know in
- 45:51Speaker 2: the back of my head. It's a terrible idea, and
- 45:52Speaker 2: I might do what Pat Durkin did. Pat Durkin has
- 45:56Speaker 2: a lot of tattoos. Now, he waited till he was old.
- 46:02Speaker 2: He knew he wouldn't live long enough to regret him,
- 46:05Speaker 2: and then he got that's it. That was his plan.
- 46:08Speaker 6: And when you get get tattoos when you're young, and
- 46:10Speaker 6: then you get old, those tattoos start to look a
- 46:12Speaker 6: little different as an age.
- 46:14Speaker 2: But if I got it fresh now, I still might, like,
- 46:18Speaker 2: let's say I live to be eighty, I still might
- 46:21Speaker 2: have to live twenty years wishing I hadn't done that.
- 46:24Speaker 7: Right.
- 46:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I think if you're in dow it, go big,
- 46:27Speaker 6: do your whole back.
- 46:29Speaker 5: No, I mean, if you go with the every turkey
- 46:31Speaker 5: have killed, I feel like you'd have to have a
- 46:33Speaker 5: pretty sizable map so that you could Yep, it's.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Gonna be hot. It's gonna be what would look like
- 46:38Speaker 2: hot spots.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Maybe maybe you put like a bigger track where you've
- 46:41Speaker 5: killed more than more than six.
- 46:44Speaker 3: H John's asking about tips on how to get kids
- 46:47Speaker 3: more involved in butchering and processing.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I got huge tips on this. Randall has none.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Brody's got hot tips my I got my kids started
- 46:59Speaker 2: in that kind of stuff so young that they never
- 47:03Speaker 2: had a realization that it was anything unusual. Like they
- 47:09Speaker 2: just have always been involved, always done it. There was
- 47:12Speaker 2: never a moment where they're like, yeah, what is that.
- 47:15Speaker 2: They can't remember, They don't remember ever not helping gut
- 47:18Speaker 2: stuff if you would grab and I could hand them anything.
- 47:22Speaker 6: If you wait too long, they'll start thinking it's gross.
- 47:24Speaker 6: But when they're little, they're super interesting in all.
- 47:26Speaker 2: That idea stuff. I could take anything in the any
- 47:29Speaker 2: bloody thing on the planet, like hold that my kids
- 47:31Speaker 2: are gonna grab it, yep. And on food, I could
- 47:36Speaker 2: serve them cat house cat. They have just always we've
- 47:41Speaker 2: always made them just eat stuff and now we don't
- 47:44Speaker 2: have to hear about it.
- 47:46Speaker 6: Start young, yeah, and get them involved with like like
- 47:51Speaker 6: that they turning it into food kind of thing like
- 47:53Speaker 6: making burger, making sausage that like my kids love doing that.
- 47:57Speaker 6: So like take it, like don't just stop at the gutting,
- 48:01Speaker 6: like go the whole thing.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Yep. I remember my kids Like little jobs I would
- 48:06Speaker 2: get my kids is they I would if I'm grinding meat,
- 48:10Speaker 2: I I you know, very careful, like not joking, very
- 48:14Speaker 2: careful about them their hands around the grinder, so bear
- 48:18Speaker 2: with me. Give them the job of taking the cube
- 48:21Speaker 2: ut meat out of the toe or out of the tub,
- 48:24Speaker 2: putting it in the pan. Give them the job of
- 48:28Speaker 2: turning the hand crank on the sausage stuff, or give
- 48:32Speaker 2: them the job of putting stuff in the bag. The
- 48:35Speaker 2: other day I had my kid. We were bagging up
- 48:37Speaker 2: some stuff. We were bagging all the jerky we made,
- 48:39Speaker 2: were bagging up the jerky you made. My kid was
- 48:42Speaker 2: in charge of hitting the button on the vac siler.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Like little jobs. Make it fun, don't make it go
- 48:49Speaker 2: on for like nine hours. Get them involved. They know
- 48:52Speaker 2: the stuff and just the key is starting them young,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and you'll never have to go through any of that
- 48:57Speaker 2: weird stuff when they when they freak out.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Awesome. Let's do one more with the show's running a long,
- 49:04Speaker 3: but we're all having a good time, so we'll tackle
- 49:06Speaker 3: some more of these at the end of the show,
- 49:08Speaker 3: depending on what time it is. We've got some guests
- 49:10Speaker 3: on the line waiting to come on.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Doing one right now or not running.
- 49:12Speaker 3: Yeah, we're do one more right now, Steve, did you
- 49:14Speaker 3: hear about Lanna del Rey marrying an alligator?
- 49:17Speaker 2: Guide my neighbor told me about that, but no, I
- 49:22Speaker 2: haven't looked it up yet.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Well, both when when Spencer and I heard the news,
- 49:26Speaker 3: both of us thought about you and how you're feeling
- 49:28Speaker 3: about this, because it seems like it's like a you
- 49:31Speaker 3: type character, and she was into him enough to marry him.
- 49:34Speaker 3: So I'm just wondering how you're feeling about.
- 49:36Speaker 2: So You're you're suggesting that I would You're suggesting that
- 49:40Speaker 2: I would be looking like that, I would have a
- 49:42Speaker 2: feeling of jealousy.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Your wife suggested that as well.
- 49:46Speaker 2: She did. Yep, no, no, no one ought to say this,
- 49:53Speaker 2: and I've told my neighbor this. Nobody, nobody understands her
- 50:00Speaker 2: music properly except me. That's all I'm gonna say on
- 50:04Speaker 2: the whole subject.
- 50:05Speaker 3: All Right, we can move on the show.
- 50:08Speaker 2: I will someday write a book. After I write my
- 50:10Speaker 2: book about how it's okay to hate Shakespeare, I will
- 50:13Speaker 2: write a book about.
- 50:16Speaker 8: Uh.
- 50:16Speaker 2: I'll write a book about what is going on in
- 50:19Speaker 2: those lyrics?
- 50:20Speaker 8: Hard to read it?
- 50:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm excited to write it. To continue our giant
- 50:26Speaker 2: gloat about proposition one twenty seven, We're going to talk
- 50:29Speaker 2: really quickly to Gasper para Cone, and we're gonna go
- 50:33Speaker 2: talk to a houndsman who one guy that that really
- 50:38Speaker 2: helped drive and and and win this fight, and one
- 50:42Speaker 2: guy that would have been really screwed had this fight
- 50:45Speaker 2: not gone the way it did. So we're taking a
- 50:47Speaker 2: two pronged approach to it. Welcome gasper, Welcome, gentlemen. Tell
- 50:53Speaker 2: me what do you think was the key man?
- 50:55Speaker 7: Like?
- 50:55Speaker 2: What what? What wound up? What wound up happening?
- 50:58Speaker 13: Well, I got to start by saying, this is the
- 51:00Speaker 13: only show in America that I think can segue from
- 51:03Speaker 13: the swabbing of squirrel privates to honkin for a bonkin,
- 51:06Speaker 13: to house cat seeing to maybe the most consequential political
- 51:11Speaker 13: outcome on the state based ballot mat.
- 51:15Speaker 2: It's elastic.
- 51:17Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, look, obviously a monumental achievement for both
- 51:21Speaker 14: the defense of and the promotion of science based wildlife
- 51:25Speaker 14: management in this country, and I think a very clear
- 51:28Speaker 14: validation of the role that hunter harvest plays in this
- 51:30Speaker 14: Plus you know, look, let's take a quick moment to
- 51:33Speaker 14: just revel in the fact that we sent for the
- 51:35Speaker 14: first time in Colorado the anti hunting community pack and
- 51:38Speaker 14: on a political measure.
- 51:40Speaker 13: So, uh, you know, just a real surprising and tremendous outcome.
- 51:44Speaker 13: And you know, to your question, Steve, you know what
- 51:48Speaker 13: was the difference here? Uh, let's dive into the numbers
- 51:51Speaker 13: and then I'll leave you with my takeaways. But look,
- 51:53Speaker 13: we're you know, obviously a huge victory. We had forty
- 51:58Speaker 13: four point five per five to three percent voting yes,
- 52:02Speaker 13: with fifty five point four to seven percent of Colorado
- 52:05Speaker 13: voters coming out against Proposition one twenty seven. We won
- 52:10Speaker 13: fifty nine of sixty four counties statewide. Obviously, the urban
- 52:14Speaker 13: demographic continued to vote in favor of it, as we've
- 52:18Speaker 13: seen in both one to fourteen, which was the wolf
- 52:20Speaker 13: proposition in previous ones. But we've turned the tide here
- 52:24Speaker 13: in a very real and meaningful way.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Go ahead, Oh No, what I was gonna say is
- 52:31Speaker 2: within this, I think that's what I'd like you to
- 52:34Speaker 2: touch on too. And you talk about what worked is
- 52:36Speaker 2: I just want to point out to the listeners, is
- 52:38Speaker 2: there's this obvious thing where this was not that fifty
- 52:42Speaker 2: five percent of the vote in Colorado was not coming
- 52:46Speaker 2: from houndsman. I mean, you don't have you know, you
- 52:50Speaker 2: got probably sub one thousand houndsmen. But it was voters
- 52:55Speaker 2: not just not voting about a thing that they felt
- 52:57Speaker 2: was going to immediately affect them individuals, but coming out
- 53:01Speaker 2: to vote against a dangerous trend in wildlife management. And
- 53:06Speaker 2: it wasn't motivated by it wasn't motivated by deeply personal incentives.
- 53:16Speaker 13: I think that's exactly right, and that underscores I think
- 53:21Speaker 13: what was so unique about the way in which we
- 53:23Speaker 13: approached this campaign. So, you know, I think there's three
- 53:26Speaker 13: primary takeaways here. The first is when we as a
- 53:29Speaker 13: community can find cause to coalesce around a particular issue
- 53:33Speaker 13: and a singular strategy, and we do it in a
- 53:35Speaker 13: manner that supports a professional campaign, we as sportsmen and
- 53:40Speaker 13: women can win these things. We had an awful lot
- 53:43Speaker 13: of naysayers early on who bore witness to the outcomes
- 53:46Speaker 13: at Prop One fourteen and frankly every other ballot measure
- 53:49Speaker 13: that's been put forward that's wildlife related in Colorado, and
- 53:51Speaker 13: there wasn't a lot of faith that we could pull
- 53:54Speaker 13: this off. But we took a very smart and strategic
- 53:58Speaker 13: approach in how we developed the campaign, which brings me
- 54:01Speaker 13: to the second takeaway that I think is probably of
- 54:04Speaker 13: the greatest significance, and the lesson to carry forward as
- 54:07Speaker 13: we begin to continue this fight in other states. And
- 54:10Speaker 13: that is and tangential to the point that I just made,
- 54:13Speaker 13: But how we engage matters. It's relatively easy to take
- 54:17Speaker 13: stock of this outcome and believe that the effort to
- 54:20Speaker 13: rally our troops and just fight the anti hunting efforts
- 54:23Speaker 13: is the only factor that led to this win. On
- 54:27Speaker 13: the other hand, while you know that is certainly important,
- 54:29Speaker 13: I think what is a far greater significance, and the
- 54:32Speaker 13: reason that we actually won is we intentionally and strategically
- 54:36Speaker 13: engage the non hunting voting population with messages that resonated
- 54:41Speaker 13: to them. We knew early on in order to win
- 54:43Speaker 13: that we're going to have to dedicate the majority of
- 54:45Speaker 13: our campaign efforts to talking to that persuasion universe. And
- 54:48Speaker 13: we're talking to soccer moms in Denver and Boulder who
- 54:51Speaker 13: have never purchased a hunting and a fishing license. You know,
- 54:55Speaker 13: when you make up eight percent of the population, you
- 54:58Speaker 13: can't rest on your laurels. You need to be very
- 55:00Speaker 13: concerned in your effort to talk to folks and meet
- 55:03Speaker 13: them where they're at with a message that means something
- 55:06Speaker 13: to them. In our landscape, and we were able to
- 55:08Speaker 13: do that effectively, And I think that is the real
- 55:12Speaker 13: core understanding and takeaway coming out of this.
- 55:14Speaker 12: But the third is these are not partisan issues.
- 55:18Speaker 13: All too often we get wrapped up in thinking this
- 55:21Speaker 13: is a Democrat versus Republican fight. But look, I mean
- 55:24Speaker 13: we outperformed one twenty seven even by a full point
- 55:27Speaker 13: over Colorado that went fifty four percent for Harris.
- 55:32Speaker 12: It's a clear demonstration that.
- 55:36Speaker 13: Voters of all variety, Democrat, Republican, independent, unaffiliated, all resonated
- 55:41Speaker 13: with our message and turned out, even to the point
- 55:43Speaker 13: where we were exceeding votes cast for President Harris in Colorado.
- 55:47Speaker 12: It's just it's a remarkable outcome.
- 55:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's incredible. Now I got to ask you a question,
- 55:51Speaker 2: and why I be totally honest with you, and I'll
- 55:52Speaker 2: be honest with you in my asking of it. I
- 55:57Speaker 2: got I got a little pessimistic leading up to the election.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Were you surprised or did you know how this was
- 56:07Speaker 2: going to land?
- 56:10Speaker 12: Look, this was a long fight.
- 56:13Speaker 13: For those that work in this world, you always go
- 56:15Speaker 13: through the roller coasters of up and downs, and numbers
- 56:18Speaker 13: changed throughout the course of the campaign based on what
- 56:20Speaker 13: you know.
- 56:21Speaker 12: Voter sentiments are.
- 56:22Speaker 13: Uh, it became relatively evident to us about two weeks
- 56:26Speaker 13: out that we were very likely to win this.
- 56:28Speaker 2: We had that was right when I started to get pessimist.
- 56:33Speaker 5: Loop him in next time.
- 56:35Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, look, I think it's inherent in human
- 56:38Speaker 13: voter behavior to worry, right, Yeah, we had. We had
- 56:42Speaker 13: pretty good indication based on the data that we were collecting,
- 56:45Speaker 13: that we were likely to win this about a week
- 56:47Speaker 13: and a half out. I will tell you I did
- 56:49Speaker 13: not anticipate an eleven point margin.
- 56:51Speaker 12: By any stretch of the imagination. That was surprising.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, congratulations, man, you were in there, and I
- 56:59Speaker 2: know you know, as you eagerly point out yourself, you
- 57:03Speaker 2: were in there along with many other people on it.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Fantastic You guys did a fantastic job. And congratulations there
- 57:12Speaker 2: and hopefully this will lead to a long string of
- 57:16Speaker 2: victories as hunters and anglers continue to need to fight
- 57:21Speaker 2: against an animal rights movement that would seek the shout
- 57:25Speaker 2: down our way of life. So, man, hats off, fantastic job,
- 57:29Speaker 2: thanks for coming on.
- 57:30Speaker 12: Well, and I want to thank you guys for all
- 57:32Speaker 12: that you've done. I do want to give a shout.
- 57:34Speaker 13: Out to Dan Gates and Responsible Wildlife Management for leading
- 57:38Speaker 13: the charge on this. Mark Truax, who ran the day
- 57:40Speaker 13: to day campaign, did a fantastic job.
- 57:44Speaker 12: And look, you hit the nail on the head. This
- 57:46Speaker 12: fight's not over already.
- 57:48Speaker 13: This morning CATS has come out calling on the Colorado
- 57:51Speaker 13: Parks and Wildlife Commission to take a very close and
- 57:53Speaker 13: concerted look at whether we.
- 57:55Speaker 12: Ought to continue to allow the use of hounds for.
- 57:59Speaker 8: Line.
- 57:59Speaker 13: So, you know, despite is I think, you know, let's
- 58:03Speaker 13: take a moment and pat ourselves on the back for
- 58:05Speaker 13: the victory in one twenty seven, but we're a long
- 58:07Speaker 13: ways from done.
- 58:09Speaker 2: Yes, sir, all right, thank you. Take that to heart, man,
- 58:11Speaker 2: appreciate it.
- 58:12Speaker 12: Thank you.
- 58:13Speaker 2: All right. Jumping out real quick to a friend of ours,
- 58:16Speaker 2: Cody Farrion. Cody's been on the show in the past,
- 58:19Speaker 2: and he was on a long time ago. We did
- 58:21Speaker 2: an episode with power hitter New York mets power hitter
- 58:26Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo, and Cody was hanging out with us and
- 58:29Speaker 2: we talked about Cody's business as a he does feral
- 58:35Speaker 2: cattle capture. So now and then you wind up in
- 58:37Speaker 2: a situation where people got feral cattle running around could
- 58:41Speaker 2: be on posing a public wrath, posing a public threat
- 58:47Speaker 2: on public lands, public safety issues, habitat destruction, whatever, And
- 58:53Speaker 2: you'll need to get these kyles caught. That's Cody's business,
- 58:57Speaker 2: catch a wild cattle. He's also a land and ranch
- 59:00Speaker 2: manager and does He's a very avid lifelong houndsman and
- 59:06Speaker 2: lion hunter. Welcome to the show, Cody, thanks for coming on. Man.
- 59:11Speaker 3: So Cody was waiting and he's he disappeared a few
- 59:14Speaker 3: minutes ago. Damn, he's he's in the green room. We
- 59:18Speaker 3: just I just can't see him, and I don't think
- 59:19Speaker 3: he can hear us. So I don't know where he went.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Oh, we lost him. We just I'll tell you what
- 59:24Speaker 2: I was gonna ask, Cody. Have we not lost him?
- 59:26Speaker 2: And you guys can just make up your own question
- 59:29Speaker 2: in your mind, as I would have to wonder. Like
- 59:31Speaker 2: I've often said, and I hesitate to bring this up,
- 59:36Speaker 2: I've often said that like, if all of a sudden,
- 59:39Speaker 2: it all sudden, hunting became illegal for reasons that I
- 59:43Speaker 2: didn't think we're justified in terms of wildlife populations, would
- 59:50Speaker 2: you then become like would you become like a type
- 59:56Speaker 2: figure I was gonna ask Cody, if you're a houndsman,
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: and you have and you have hounds and your whole
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: life you're a houndsman. You like to chase lions, and
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: all of a sudden they say you can't do you
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: then just go and be like, what do you do.
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: Dogs for a walk in the wood.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: It's hard to keep a low profile as a hounceman. Yeah,
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: if you love to bow hunt whitetails, you could probably
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: pull that off.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: You'd be like, I think I'm going to probably take
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: a little mosey in the woods of my boat on that.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: But yeah, but it's hard to like quietly take your
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: hounds out. I don't know what you would do. I'm
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: not again, I'm not here to give legal advice.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: Yes, is you'd probably still be in business because they'd
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: outlaw hunting. But then the game agency would call you
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: to help them.
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, nuisance cat.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: They'd be like, Okay, now we got to pay people
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: to kill five hundred lions a year?
- 1:00:46Speaker 12: Uh?
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: Are we doing?
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Indefensible law? Who's got one?
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: You want to go first? Randall, doesn't matter.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: I'm happy, do you not just waiting for that?
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: We've got I got a million infencible law.
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: I mean, I was trying to think of one. And
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: so many of my laws I found are just purely
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: I mean defensible. I have a hard time arguing.
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: To you there.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: But in the in the spirit of this week, having
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: seen all of the u I voted, you know, make
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: sure you get out and vote, make sure you do
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: this and that, I was reminded of a law that
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: I have thought about. I think about it every spring,
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: and that is this. I wish it were illegal to
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: publicize draw deadlines.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Make it more insight.
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: Every March April. May you see people posting like, don't
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: forget to apply for moosecoat sheep And I think to myself,
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: I've had those on my calendar for months now. And
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: you know, it's not that like agents. You know, the
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: agencies would still publish the draw eight. It wouldn't be
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: a secret, but people would actually have to look up
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: when they need to get their applications in because I
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: think if you'd forget to apply for a big horn
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: sheep tag. And this is where maybe it becomes a
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: little bit of a hot take that you shouldn't then
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: draw one. And I'll point out too that people when
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: you are looking for a job and you see a
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: great job ad, you're like, oh, this would be a
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: huge opportunity.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: To send me around.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: Do you post it and say, hey, guys, I found
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: this job at some guys some guys not looking for
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: a job who's maybe perfectly happy without that job, throws
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: his resume and that guy gets the job. So I
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: would just ask that, you know, it's sort of fun
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: to advertise that you're participating in this in this thing.
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: You know, it's sort of like a a badge of
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: pride or or sort of identifying with your tribe by saying, hey,
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: don't forget. I'd actually prefer that those people who have
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: forgotten to not apply.
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: But trying to use this law to reduce competition for.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Yourself and to make it more like more of a
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: if you get it, if you deserve it, you deserve
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: it by it.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: And I'm not trying to This is the one way
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: I think, like, I'm not trying to make it harder
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: for people to apply. I'm not trying to like price
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: people out. I'm not trying to like keep new applicants
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: out of the pool. I'm just saying, if you can't
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: remember to put in for those once in a lifetime tags.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: Put a little notice on your Google if you can't
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: if yeah, like like there's a bare minimum threshold.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: That's a great point. I like it. I like that law.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Let's pass it. And then I think we should do
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: away with those little stickers you get with a flag
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: on it that says I applied.
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: Yeah, you know exactly.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: You know that's what made me think of this.
- 1:03:35Speaker 6: You need to gabble to prove the law.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Oh where's your fish bonker? Brody's was your uncle's fish bond? Dad?
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: This dad's fish bonker? U approved? Now, I want you
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: to know I've never done what you're saying. The only
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: time I would ever remind someone to apply for something
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: is if I wanted to go along if they drew
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: it right. I only do it if it affects me. Yeah. Uh,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I thought of one that related to this whole voting company,
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: this whole you're you're tying it into, Like I voted
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: congratulatory stickers, which crane was running around, and I gather.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: I think this is the old idea. I think you
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: shouldn't be able to vote unless you can pass a
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: quiz that everyone like both sides, everyone agrees on the questions.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: A current events quiz get to pass the current events
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: quiz and if you need to opt for an oral quiz,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: will provide staff to give you an oral quiz. I
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: don't think you should just be able to go down
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: there and vote, because leading up to the election, I
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: would be talking to people and they'll tell me things,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: and I would know I'd be like, what you're saying
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: is just not like that's not a thing. You're talking
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: about a thing that's impossible.
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: What about like not only current events, but a little
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: like American history, basic civics.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: I think then gonna get in trouble with people. This
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: is already an incendiary This is the definition of an indefensible.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: I mean I did have that. I had. I actually
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: had an analog to that in my uh in my
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: indefensible law, which was like you have to identify the animal,
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: like if you're putting if you're putting in for a
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: big horn sheep tag.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: What is a big horn sheep?
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: Point like here's three animals. Point out because like.
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: Perhaps even identify a legal ran to.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: Hunt bears, Yeah, to hunt bears in Montana, you have
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: to be able. You have to take that online quiz.
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: You know this is a grizzly, this.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: Is a black bear unpass a law. This is not
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: accepted because I applied for a sandbar gear tag in
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Florida one time and I wouldn't So that's still to
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: this day couldn't tell you what one means in the i.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: OT in the reconciliation process, I decided to do away
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: with that because I did think that was a barrier
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: maybe too far. It's just like, do you want it?
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: You can figure out what it looks like.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Sandbardier on some island in Florida, and I thought that
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: sounds fun. I don't know, tell they look like yep.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: But and also he reminded me. But it wasn't a
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: public announcement.
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: Bro you got yeah, yeah, texting your buddy.
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: I got a big one. Catch and release fishing should
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: be illegal. Oh come on yeah, come on.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's appropriate that I approved that I approve this
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: with Brody's Fish Bonder.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: If any like, if any given species of fish on
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: any given body of water can't support a catch and
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: keep season there, should you shouldn't be able to fish
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: for them at all? Like come on, like and like
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: the dudes that are like patting themselves on a back
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: after a fifty letting fifty fish go in a day.
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: They killed exactly. And finally, if you were to sink
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: a cable into the ground and attach a big cable
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: snare to it, put a little noose on there and
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: bait that that thing with a carrot or an apple
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: and get a deer, then mess with it, take pictures
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: of it. Let let it wear itself out and let
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: it go. You get thrown in jail. Like, don't look
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: at fish the same.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: You killed that book. No, I just caught him, exhausted him,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: took a picture of him.
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: Rode him around for a while, and I shook him
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: around in the water for a minute and he's good.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, well I kind of had to like resuscitate
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: him a little bit. Yeah, I breathed into his nostrils.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: I mean he kind of limped off.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: Man, I had to push him two or three times.
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: But it's like fish, they get it. They get treated horrible.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Because they don't have eyelashes slashes. You wouldn't be able to
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: do that to him or souls.
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: You know, either, or you'd have to make some exceptions
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: and let people go. Let you know, if it's like
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: an unintentional bycatch of a fish, you're not supposed to
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: be fishing for it. But yeah, man, it should be illegal.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: I Phil his one last listener feedback.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: We've got your buddy Cody in right now. He's kind
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: of popping in and out, but let's let's give it
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: a shot. Here, Hold on one second.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Holy cow, he's back, Cody Farrion.
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: Hey, what up?
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Listen?
- 1:08:12Speaker 8: Cody?
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: I want to ask you a question. I don't want
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: you to I don't want you to admit that you
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: would become a vigilanti. What in the world as as
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: a lifelong houndsman, lifelong lion hunter, you got I don't
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: know how many dogs, right, you got You've got livestock,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: you got horses, you got dogs, you got the whole infrastructure.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: You spent your whole life doing this. You always look
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: forward to the winner. All of a sudden they come
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: and say, hey, we had a vote, and you're not
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: allowed to do that anymore. What in the hell would
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: you do?
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: Be pretty tough to take, right.
- 1:08:46Speaker 15: It would almost take an honest person and turn him
- 1:08:49Speaker 15: into an outlaw for sure.
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: Civil disobedience.
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: All.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: How how were you feeling that day? Man? Was that
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: the thing was that the part of the election you
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: were watching most sort of most hotly, most personally.
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: I was in the top two for sure, But.
- 1:09:11Speaker 15: Yeah, I was kind of real pessimistic there at the
- 1:09:14Speaker 15: end of it. But we had so many good people
- 1:09:16Speaker 15: pulling for us, and I think education was kind of
- 1:09:19Speaker 15: what really in the end pulled through. Just like mister
- 1:09:24Speaker 15: Gasper was saying that there was a lot of people
- 1:09:26Speaker 15: that voted for the wealth of the animal, you know,
- 1:09:29Speaker 15: just not for because they were educating the fact that
- 1:09:33Speaker 15: they knew to do the right thing. So it worked
- 1:09:35Speaker 15: out good for sure, but there is still what two
- 1:09:39Speaker 15: million uneducated people that were going to have to enlighten
- 1:09:44Speaker 15: on why we still need hunting and use the North
- 1:09:48Speaker 15: American model to do so.
- 1:09:49Speaker 8: And yeah, hey.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Man, man, tell us real quick, who's behind you there? Cody?
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: That would be I got uh rot and Thelma.
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: Yeah, you guys doing a victory lap.
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: Yeah, we've been dancing all morning.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: And uh and Cody, when does your season start? Like,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: when are you gonna go out and start looking for tracks?
- 1:10:16Speaker 15: Actually, we're hunting cattle down south now. We got some
- 1:10:19Speaker 15: snow down down by Los Alamos and we've been down
- 1:10:23Speaker 15: there running dogs and then lion season will start the
- 1:10:27Speaker 15: end of the big game Hunt for season which is
- 1:10:29Speaker 15: the end of this month. Plus CPW, which there's a
- 1:10:34Speaker 15: great group of guys down here with our colorhod Parks
- 1:10:37Speaker 15: and wildlife there are employing another lion study in this
- 1:10:42Speaker 15: unit or these units down here, So not only will
- 1:10:45Speaker 15: we be able to pursue lions and take them, but
- 1:10:50Speaker 15: we're gonna probably coller a bunch of lines for CPW
- 1:10:53Speaker 15: for a line study.
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: So it's all good.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: Excellent, man up, keep up the great work. I always love
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: hearing your stories. Thanks for coming on, catch in with you.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: We'll touch in with you again down the road once
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Lion Season gets rolling. Cody Farrion, thanks so much.
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: Man, awesome, Thanks guys.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: All right, Phil and Hit, did you want to do
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: one last feedback a week?
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: I mean, we'll turn this into kind of like a
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: feedback slash promo because people have some questions that I
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: think we've got answers to. When are we getting season
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: thirteen of Meat Eater. I thought this would be a
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: good discussion to have about rough cuts, and yet.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Heard rough Cuts is available right now. We've just started
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: launching a show that we did that I'm hosting called
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: rough Cuts. Is kind of a different sort of look
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: at a lot of the issues and practices that we'd
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: like to get involved in. Our first rough cuts just
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: launched on Monday. It's about trapping. We're gonna run a
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: bunch of rough cut episodes coming up in the next weeks.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: And at the same time, I'm working on a season
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: thirteen to Meat Eater as well. But we've only filmed
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: one episode so far, but we got a bunch more
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: coming up, and we'll get another season of me Eater
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: under wraps in the future.
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: Here and to follow that up, since Randall's here as well,
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: Mogo's asking about the next audiobook and also is it
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: very exhausting?
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: Are are you making that assumption based on my appearance.
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: Exhausting or exhaustive?
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Both both. It's coming along great. We're actively recording it
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: right now. We've got most of the chapters under wraps.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: It is the history of so if you remember when
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: we did Meat Eater's American History, The Long Hunters, we
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: covered the deer skin trade, so are kind of one
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: of our figures of focus was Daniel Boone, who was
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: a deer skin hunter. Now the one we're currently recording,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: we jump into the Mountain Man era, which is the
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: beaver skin trade, and we're covering the years the Long
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Hunters covered seventeen sixty three to seventeen seventy five. The
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Mountain Men so Me Eaters American History of the Mountain Men,
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: which we're just finishing that'll be out very soon, covers
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: eighteen oh three to eighteen forty. It covers the mountain
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Man era. You probably think you know what a mountain
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: man was. I think you're gonna learn a lot more
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: details about it.
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: It is a.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Enlightening at times quite gruesome, very gruesome, very gruesome, lot
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: of violence.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: A lot of eating weird stuff, a.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Lot of eating weird stuff, story of the Rocky Mountain
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: beaver trappers, and one of our primary figures of focus
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: in that is Jim Bridger. From there we will jump
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: into the Buffalo Hide Hunters, and that will probably when
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: we bracket those years. It'll probably be eighteen sixty six
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: to eighteen eighty two.
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: And I it will be available I believe early February.
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: I think it'll go on pre sale sometime in mid
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: December according to our latest understanding.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's gonna seem bias, but it is a
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: phenomenal Uh. It's a phenomenal work. And then after that,
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: it's what I wish would have existed my whole life.
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: After that, they're gonna start coming out at a quicker clip,
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: quicker clip after that.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, great, all right, Uh end outro video, I have
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: I haven't done this in a long time. What does
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: that mean?
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Oh, we're gonna play the outro video and then stay
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: tuned for a video that Spencer took of him shooting.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Ah, so that's not the end outro video.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: We're gonna play the the the bumper outro. We played
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: the theme song again, rollicking theme song. It's gonna fade
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: to black. You're gonna see uh, you know, sort of
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: like ending videos.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: And then you see Spencer killer ELK.
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: It's like a post credit.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: This is a very nimble program.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: I guess I'll stick around to watch.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: Thanks guys, see you next week.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Thanks everybody.
- 1:15:03Speaker 16: That was a good shot. If you got another, that
- 1:15:08Speaker 16: was a good one. Man. I'm pretty sure he's fatal.
- 1:15:10Speaker 16: He's struggling. He's really struggling.
- 1:15:15Speaker 8: He's down.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: Oh good, Oh dude, he's still alive.
- 1:15:26Speaker 16: But his all four legs are down.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: Holy shit, Now his legs are up kicking. I think
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: he's dead.
