Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Sam Archer: NZGBC director of market transformation on the Greens' electrification plan
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Greens want the government to hand out cheap loans
- 0:02Speaker 1: for solar panels on everyone's house. They want a national
- 0:05Speaker 1: electrification plan, no detail or costings at this point. Sam
- 0:08Speaker 1: much a Green Building Council with me this morning. Morning Sam.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Very nice to be on your show, Ryan and.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Great, thank you and good to have you here too, Sam.
- 0:16Speaker 1: What I thought banks already do loans now they do
- 0:18Speaker 1: one percent loans, remain z so you can do stuff
- 0:21Speaker 1: like this, don't.
- 0:21Speaker 2: They They do, yes, And some people are making use
- 0:25Speaker 2: of that, made use of that to some of the
- 0:27Speaker 2: year where I've done in my house. But you know,
- 0:30Speaker 2: part of the issue with that is that you can
- 0:32Speaker 2: only have it on if you've got a mortgage. So
- 0:34Speaker 2: you know, there's a large life percentage of homeowners, you know,
- 0:36Speaker 2: own their home outright. They can't get the hold of
- 0:38Speaker 2: that loan. And then of course, you know we've had
- 0:41Speaker 2: things like rentals and things like that where there's much
- 0:43Speaker 2: much less incentive for landlords to put the solar panels
- 0:46Speaker 2: on their homes.
- 0:47Speaker 1: If you have a house that you own out right,
- 0:50Speaker 1: surely you can probably afford to go ahead and do
- 0:54Speaker 1: a solar panel.
- 0:56Speaker 2: You know what, there are plenty of home with our homeowners. Yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they own you know, they're their they're asset rich, but
- 1:03Speaker 2: their cash poor. You know, that's quite a common case.
- 1:06Speaker 1: This idea of mass electrification. Does our grid even have
- 1:10Speaker 1: the capacity to handle something like that?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Well? Do you know what? It's a it's an interesting
- 1:14Speaker 2: one because now you're getting into the cruts of the
- 1:18Speaker 2: issue for Music Green Building Council, which is that everyone
- 1:21Speaker 2: focuses on the solar side of things. But we've been
- 1:23Speaker 2: pushing very strongly for getting homes off gas. They're replacing
- 1:27Speaker 2: things like gas hot water with with heat pump hot
- 1:30Speaker 2: water or electric cylinders. We did a report last year
- 1:34Speaker 2: which showed that if we did that, you know, if
- 1:36Speaker 2: we moved to something like heat pumps, which are way
- 1:38Speaker 2: way more efficient, and actually converted some of the existing
- 1:40Speaker 2: electric cylinders that we've got, we've husually reduced the demand
- 1:44Speaker 2: on the grid. So you know, it doesn't necessarily mean
- 1:48Speaker 2: just because we're electrifying things that we're going to be
- 1:50Speaker 2: increasing demand.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The heat pump situation, how many houses in New Zealand
- 1:54Speaker 1: right now aren't on heat pumps.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yea, the heat pump space heating. There's a huge uptake now,
- 2:01Speaker 2: so I think I think the last time I looked
- 2:03Speaker 2: at the figures it was sixty or seventy percent something
- 2:05Speaker 2: like that. With space heating, the newest technology is the
- 2:08Speaker 2: thing that we're wanting to see ECA have been promoting
- 2:11Speaker 2: is a heat pumps for hot water, you know, forr
- 2:14Speaker 2: showers there. The uptake is maybe one or two percent
- 2:17Speaker 2: is a very very low uptake at the moment.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Okay, a long way to go there, Sam good TV
- 2:21Speaker 1: on the program. Sam Acher from the New Zealand Green
- 2:24Speaker 1: Building counciled for.
- 2:26Speaker 2: More from earlier edition with Ryan Bridge.
