- 0:29Speaker 1: All right, welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia
- 0:32Speaker 1: Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Show in the world, twelve years strong.
- 0:40Speaker 1: We got our good friend coming to you from Fox
- 0:44Speaker 1: Sports Phillies, The Gambler over at Pickswap Media as well.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Subscribe to the podcast there. You're also doing some stuff
- 0:51Speaker 2: over at DraftKings as well. He is our good friend.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Showan Bernard buddy, How you doing, my man?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I interview back on. I appreciate you having me,
- 0:58Speaker 3: Jeff A little disappointed in the winding down of the
- 1:00Speaker 3: NBA season, but we got a little bit more juice
- 1:03Speaker 3: around here with us, some draft talk to get into
- 1:05Speaker 3: as well. So I'm hanging in there. I'm making the
- 1:06Speaker 3: most of it, and it has been some really good
- 1:08Speaker 3: hoops across this playoff.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Look, we got to get into the Philadelphia seventy six
- 1:12Speaker 1: ers this offseason. Now we know that they have the
- 1:15Speaker 1: number three overall pick in the draft Sean, and obviously
- 1:19Speaker 1: we can't wait to see what they do with that
- 1:22Speaker 1: number three overall pick. You know, my co host and
- 1:24Speaker 1: I this past week we were talking about on our
- 1:26Speaker 1: main podcast show about what should happen with the number
- 1:30Speaker 1: three overall pick, and my co host Len actually said
- 1:33Speaker 1: he wouldn't be surprised if Daryl Morey possibly trades the
- 1:35Speaker 1: pick to acquire some new talent or future assets. I
- 1:39Speaker 1: thought it was interesting today there were some reports that
- 1:41Speaker 1: came out that said, you know what they're they're really
- 1:44Speaker 1: looking at developing a young core and that that number
- 1:47Speaker 1: three pick may stay and actually not be traded.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So I kind of want to go through this with
- 1:51Speaker 2: you here.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Let's start first about what you are hoping the Sixers
- 1:56Speaker 1: front office will do with this pick, keep it or
- 1:59Speaker 1: trade it? You know, what are your thoughts here, Sean.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm very bullish on the idea that the Sixers
- 2:05Speaker 3: team needs to walk away with one high level rookie,
- 2:07Speaker 3: one high level player that they give you as a
- 2:09Speaker 3: potential piece of the future. Here. I do think that
- 2:11Speaker 3: there is a certainly truth to Darryl Moorey will pick
- 2:14Speaker 3: up his phone and answer whatever call to offers that
- 2:16Speaker 3: comes way. And it is smoke screen season that I'm
- 2:18Speaker 3: sure we'll hear a million rumors before the draft even
- 2:21Speaker 3: gets here. Yea, there is I think some potential to
- 2:23Speaker 3: like the Utah Jazz has been a team pointed out
- 2:25Speaker 3: who hold that fifth pick, if they want to move
- 2:27Speaker 3: from three to five, pick up a little extra in
- 2:29Speaker 3: the process and something like that. I could be potentially
- 2:31Speaker 3: open to that idea, but I do feel very strongly
- 2:34Speaker 3: that this team does need to add a high impact
- 2:36Speaker 3: rookie that could be a part of the long term core.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I'm personally on the team Ace Bailey camp and will
- 2:40Speaker 3: be perfectly comfortable sitting there at three and making that
- 2:43Speaker 3: selection there.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But there's a lot to like. VJ.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Edgecomb has certainly built up some momentum in recent days
- 2:48Speaker 3: in recent weeks there, so the draft kind of starts
- 2:50Speaker 3: at the sixers with that third pick. With Cooper Flag
- 2:53Speaker 3: and Dylan Harper sort of penciled in for those first
- 2:55Speaker 3: and second here, it's gonna be very interesting to see
- 2:57Speaker 3: what they do.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Ace Bao, I think that he is He could be
- 3:00Speaker 1: that key component to this team in the future. I
- 3:03Speaker 1: talked about that young core that we are looking to
- 3:06Speaker 1: potentially have in the future. I think Ace could be
- 3:09Speaker 1: that guy. And again, we just don't know where some
- 3:12Speaker 1: of the veterans on this team are going to be.
- 3:13Speaker 1: We don't know where Joe ellen Beid's health is going
- 3:15Speaker 1: to be. We don't know where Paul George's health necessarily.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Is going to be.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I know we talked about those two gentlemen the last
- 3:20Speaker 1: time you were on the show, but there's just so
- 3:22Speaker 1: much uncertainty. You bring an ace and the type of
- 3:26Speaker 1: talent that he has, and you develop around him Tyrese Maxi,
- 3:31Speaker 1: Jared McCain, and you've got yourself a really cool and
- 3:34Speaker 1: really spectacular young core moving forward, at least in my opinion.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent there. And they're in a pretty
- 3:40Speaker 3: unique spot as an organization as they do sort of
- 3:42Speaker 3: have a chance to do this two timelines concept that
- 3:44Speaker 3: the foundation has been laid for sort of this next
- 3:47Speaker 3: era of Sixers basketball with the guys you mentioned with
- 3:49Speaker 3: Tyreese Maxie, with Jared McCain, Quintin Grimes each being twenty
- 3:52Speaker 3: four years old or younger as a part of that picture,
- 3:55Speaker 3: and this third pick obviously fits that same build. Now,
- 3:57Speaker 3: with all that being said, you still do have the
- 3:59Speaker 3: veterans time to their roster, and that's gonna be the
- 4:01Speaker 3: biggest question mark with things. I do feel strongly about
- 4:04Speaker 3: bringing in a young talent to continue to sort of
- 4:06Speaker 3: grow this pathway to long term success there, but If
- 4:10Speaker 3: this team is fully healthy, they're gonna be right in
- 4:11Speaker 3: this contending mix. And that's sort of what you're banking
- 4:13Speaker 3: on here. So that's the biggest question mark. But they
- 4:16Speaker 3: can kind of do both things. I feel by making
- 4:18Speaker 3: this draft pick.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look when we look at what this draft could
- 4:23Speaker 1: mean for the Sixers as well, let's not forget that
- 4:26Speaker 1: they have the thirty fifth pick in this draft as well,
- 4:29Speaker 1: in the second round. Sean and the Sixers, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 1: they've been known to draft some you know, I would
- 4:35Speaker 1: say productive talent in the second round. You know, in
- 4:38Speaker 1: recent years, Jeremy Grant, Shake Milton, they provided some depth
- 4:41Speaker 1: for this team in the past. I'm wondering, is their
- 4:44Speaker 1: talent that you're looking at in the second round that
- 4:46Speaker 1: could potentially help this team at some point down the road.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yeah, there, one hundred percent is there. And I think
- 4:52Speaker 3: the Sixers have had a fairly high success from both
- 4:54Speaker 3: the undrafted market and second round picks throughout the years.
- 4:57Speaker 3: For all the criticisms of Darryl Mory, he's done a
- 4:59Speaker 3: really nice job with the late round selections and undrafted
- 5:02Speaker 3: guys that he has hit on. What I think is
- 5:04Speaker 3: like the beautiful part of that specific selection. There you
- 5:07Speaker 3: sort of can see who are the followers, who are
- 5:09Speaker 3: the guys falling out of the first round, and pounce
- 5:11Speaker 3: from there. Ryan Kulkbrenner is a guy that I've seen
- 5:14Speaker 3: mock to the Sixers a lot, who obviously stuck around
- 5:16Speaker 3: at Creyton for a while. I wouldn't mind taking another
- 5:19Speaker 3: stab at addressing the backup center position with a position
- 5:21Speaker 3: like that. I certainly am not in on it from
- 5:23Speaker 3: the third pick perspective, right that could be talking into
- 5:26Speaker 3: it from thirty seven, But I think my mindset from
- 5:28Speaker 3: the Sixers would be let the pieces fall in front
- 5:30Speaker 3: of you, see who the guys that fell that you
- 5:32Speaker 3: didn't expect, and capitalize from there. That so often we
- 5:34Speaker 3: see gms sort of outsmart themselves across all sports by
- 5:38Speaker 3: making these unique picks here. And I think Darryl Mory
- 5:40Speaker 3: has done a really nice job just sitting in there,
- 5:42Speaker 3: keeping track of what his board looks like and taking
- 5:44Speaker 3: the best available from there.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Absolutely, And you know, depending on how the draft and
- 5:49Speaker 1: other offseason acquisitions look and how it goes for the
- 5:53Speaker 1: Sixers Sean, you know, the I look at this team
- 5:57Speaker 1: as and maybe it's just just hopeful optimism here that
- 6:00Speaker 1: they could be a competitive team in the twenty twenty
- 6:02Speaker 1: five twenty twenty six season. Then I go back to
- 6:05Speaker 1: the old phrase, you know, fool me once, shame on you.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Forol me twice, shame on me. And I feel like
- 6:10Speaker 1: we've been fooled more than a few times by the
- 6:13Speaker 1: seventy six ers. But then again, injuries continue to crop
- 6:17Speaker 1: up for key people on this team, key personnel I
- 6:20Speaker 1: should say, on this team and players that we need
- 6:23Speaker 1: to be at a certain echelon in order for them
- 6:25Speaker 1: to get to where we want them to go in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the playoffs. So, in your opinion, how competitive could this
- 6:32Speaker 1: team be with the right acquisitions next season? What are
- 6:36Speaker 1: your thoughts here, because I know you've talked about it
- 6:38Speaker 1: a little bit here and there on the Gambler and
- 6:40Speaker 1: certainly you know I know.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Pickswat media as well.
- 6:44Speaker 1: What are your thoughts in terms of how competitive this
- 6:46Speaker 1: team could be this year based on various acquisitions.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I do think this team is going to be
- 6:51Speaker 3: right back in the competitive mix next year and should
- 6:53Speaker 3: be viewed as a contender in the Eastern Conference. And
- 6:55Speaker 3: to start internally, just viewing the Sixers team, it obviously
- 6:58Speaker 3: all hinges on the health of well embid, and that
- 7:00Speaker 3: is the million dollar.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Question that we will never every year.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Every year, it sure is, and there certainly has been
- 7:06Speaker 3: much to inspire confidence based on the past results that
- 7:09Speaker 3: we do have. He obviously had another surgery this offseason,
- 7:12Speaker 3: and I mean it was crystal clear that he was
- 7:14Speaker 3: not right from start to finish last year. So you
- 7:16Speaker 3: do have to hope that returns to some extent as
- 7:18Speaker 3: this is all built around him. Paul George, I am
- 7:20Speaker 3: confident that we get a resurgence season and he probably
- 7:23Speaker 3: will never be the max contract guy that we paid
- 7:25Speaker 3: him to be. But he shot twenty percent on open
- 7:28Speaker 3: three pointers last year. That's just not Paul George. He
- 7:30Speaker 3: also revealed today that he was playing through a torn
- 7:32Speaker 3: abduct there so I kind of had a lot of
- 7:34Speaker 3: things going on, and keep in mind, like the moving
- 7:36Speaker 3: cross country, the fires near his house in La. It
- 7:39Speaker 3: was in everything that could go wrong did go wrong
- 7:41Speaker 3: for both Paul George individually and the Sixers team. Now,
- 7:44Speaker 3: looking beyond the Sixers, I do think the Eastern Conference
- 7:47Speaker 3: is as wide open as it will be next year.
- 7:49Speaker 3: The Boston Celtics, Jason Tatum obviously suffering that achilles injury
- 7:53Speaker 3: which is going to put him out for at the
- 7:54Speaker 3: minimum most of the regular season. And even before that,
- 7:57Speaker 3: there were some real deal conversations with the scenes about
- 8:00Speaker 3: all the moves that need to be made from a
- 8:02Speaker 3: cat perspective and a tax perspective for what that organization
- 8:05Speaker 3: is facing a team like the Milwaukee Bucks. I would
- 8:08Speaker 3: think it is incredibly unlikely that Janna Sneakumbo ever plays
- 8:11Speaker 3: another game in a Bucks uniform. And that's another legitimate
- 8:13Speaker 3: contender in the East that is sort of knocked off there.
- 8:16Speaker 3: There are the Knicks that are going to be around,
- 8:17Speaker 3: the Pacers are going to be around, but there is
- 8:19Speaker 3: not this like super team that you should be afraid
- 8:21Speaker 3: of in the Eastern Conference. So the Sixers have to
- 8:23Speaker 3: look at this as we have a chance to go
- 8:25Speaker 3: for it and take every every step that could be
- 8:27Speaker 3: taken to get to that point.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It it makes me think too that if the Sixers
- 8:33Speaker 1: front office tries to somehow package the number three pick
- 8:38Speaker 1: to get a veteran star in here. Of course, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Kevin Durant, you know they're the rumors about that. I'm
- 8:43Speaker 1: not a big fan of that. At this point. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 1: we've kind of seen this time and time again with
- 8:47Speaker 1: the Sixers team the front office. Let's bring in Vets,
- 8:50Speaker 1: Let's see, you know whether it's James Harden, you know
- 8:52Speaker 1: whether it back in the day, Jimmy Butler. I mean,
- 8:55Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Jimmy back
- 8:56Speaker 1: on this team. I absolutely would, but I I just
- 9:00Speaker 1: don't think having a KD around here is actually going
- 9:03Speaker 1: to be very good or beneficial for this team in
- 9:06Speaker 1: the direction of the team either.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Sean, Yeah, I would be against that game plan as well.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And for me, how I look at it is, I
- 9:12Speaker 3: just feel like it's a further all in push or
- 9:15Speaker 3: bet on a gamble that they probably shouldn't still feel
- 9:17Speaker 3: all that certain in taking. You've made your bed and
- 9:20Speaker 3: have to sleep in it with the Joel embiad situation
- 9:22Speaker 3: and the injury question marks that I'll continue to have
- 9:24Speaker 3: here by trading more to kind of bring in. And
- 9:27Speaker 3: don't get me wrong, I'm not here to argue that
- 9:28Speaker 3: Paul George is better than Kevin Durant. He is not
- 9:30Speaker 3: even at this stage of this career. But I just
- 9:32Speaker 3: don't think it makes sense to kind of double down
- 9:34Speaker 3: on that with the hopes that this can sort of
- 9:36Speaker 3: come together. So I get the concept here, but I
- 9:38Speaker 3: do feel very strongly the best direction for the organization
- 9:41Speaker 3: is make a pick at the third selection, or at
- 9:44Speaker 3: least in those handful of top picks, to have a
- 9:46Speaker 3: guy that could be a long term piece rather than
- 9:48Speaker 3: just a veteran at the end of his career.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Yeah, totally agree with you, buddy, Totally agree with you.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Again, folks, we were talking to schan Bernard from Fox
- 9:56Speaker 1: Sports Phillies the Gambler pickswap Media. Also you can check
- 10:00Speaker 1: out he's doing some great things over DraftKings as well.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Sean. Want to get into the NBA playoffs with you?
- 10:06Speaker 1: Now, enough sixers talk, Let's get into the NBA playoffs
- 10:09Speaker 1: right now. This Knicks Pacers matchup is going to be stellar.
- 10:13Speaker 1: In my opinion, I think it's gonna go seven games.
- 10:16Speaker 1: How do you think this series is gonna go? What
- 10:18Speaker 1: are you gonna be looking for?
- 10:19Speaker 2: In my man?
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm in agreement with you that I do think
- 10:21Speaker 3: this is a seven game series. And it's kind of cool.
- 10:24Speaker 3: We've seen obviously like sort of four new faces in
- 10:26Speaker 3: the conference finals now and that there is gonna be
- 10:29Speaker 3: another new champion. And I think this parody overall is
- 10:31Speaker 3: good for the NBA the amount of turnover that is there,
- 10:34Speaker 3: But when looking at this specific matchup, it is gonna
- 10:36Speaker 3: be an interesting clash of styles. The Indiana Pacers are
- 10:38Speaker 3: a team They're gonna roll very deep in their rotation.
- 10:41Speaker 3: They're gonna throw bodies that you rotate through. Guys can
- 10:43Speaker 3: be any given night where guy is stepping up and
- 10:45Speaker 3: having his twenty point outing, whether it is Andrew Nemhard
- 10:48Speaker 3: or Benedict Mattherin or Aaron Nasmith. That you can kind
- 10:50Speaker 3: of go down the list of the guys that are
- 10:52Speaker 3: capable of stepping up, and then when you contrast that
- 10:54Speaker 3: to the New York Knicks, you know exactly what you're
- 10:56Speaker 3: getting as far as who's gonna be on the floor.
- 10:58Speaker 3: These guys are gonna clock close to four forty eight
- 11:00Speaker 3: minutes on an every night basis. With that said there,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I do think that this series is gonna end up
- 11:04Speaker 3: a bit of a war of attrition, that there's going
- 11:06Speaker 3: to be a bit too much depth to this Pacers team.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Depth to me is something I've overlooked from a playoff perspective,
- 11:12Speaker 3: as you do kind of think of it as the
- 11:13Speaker 3: rotation Titans there isn't as many minutes to give around,
- 11:16Speaker 3: but I think this year we're seeing the value of that,
- 11:18Speaker 3: especially with the injuries that have popped up. So if
- 11:20Speaker 3: there is one injury to this next team, I don't
- 11:23Speaker 3: feel great about their chances whatsoever. And I do think
- 11:25Speaker 3: that there is a world where this playoff run starts
- 11:27Speaker 3: to drain them a little bit. They went through a
- 11:29Speaker 3: very physical battle with Detroit in the opening round, had
- 11:33Speaker 3: to deliver their best punch to take down the defending
- 11:35Speaker 3: champion Celtics team. I do think Pacers have life, they
- 11:38Speaker 3: have the same momentum, so I will go Pacers and seven.
- 11:40Speaker 3: But I do think it's gonna be straight up awesome series.
- 11:42Speaker 2: See I'm thinking it's going to be the Knicks. I
- 11:44Speaker 2: just do.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And I don't know whether it's a gut feeling. At
- 11:48Speaker 1: the beginning of the season, I actually predicted it was
- 11:52Speaker 1: going to be Sixers and Nicks in the Eastern Conference finals,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and I could see Jalen Brunson just putting the weight
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the world on his shoulders and at the end
- 12:02Speaker 1: of the day getting it done. He is that good
- 12:05Speaker 1: of a basketball player, as you know. So I don't know, Well,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we have to wait and see how this all turns out.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But I want to turn our attention now to the
- 12:12Speaker 1: Western Conference Finals because we of course are going to
- 12:15Speaker 1: see another another interesting instellar series between the Tea Wolves
- 12:19Speaker 1: and the Thunder. My gosh, it's gonna be This is
- 12:22Speaker 1: gonna be an incredible series as well. Again, I think
- 12:25Speaker 1: this series goes seven games here. How do you think
- 12:28Speaker 1: this series is gonna go?
- 12:29Speaker 3: Sean, Yeah, I've been a bit surprised as sort of
- 12:32Speaker 3: the perception of the series seems to be the Thunder
- 12:34Speaker 3: of the heavy favorites when you look at the odds
- 12:35Speaker 3: and all those kinds of conversations, I think the series
- 12:38Speaker 3: is up for grabs. I do think Minnesota has a
- 12:40Speaker 3: very legitimate chance. I think Anthony Edwards Brushe gotus Alexander
- 12:43Speaker 3: is going to be about as electric of a matchup
- 12:45Speaker 3: as you can hope for. And what I think is
- 12:46Speaker 3: especially cool about this is I do think it will
- 12:49Speaker 3: shake out where it's matching up with these two stars
- 12:51Speaker 3: directly guarding each other. It's pretty rare that we see
- 12:53Speaker 3: that in the NBA, as teams tend to have like
- 12:55Speaker 3: their defensive specialists thrown on that guy that both these
- 12:58Speaker 3: star players are guys that do do the dirty work
- 13:01Speaker 3: by indefensively and set the tone for their team here.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I think ultimately that Oklahoma City probably has a bit
- 13:06Speaker 3: too much depth in their defenses at a level that
- 13:08Speaker 3: I think Minnesota is going to struggle with. But expect
- 13:11Speaker 3: some old school eighty style scores in this. I think
- 13:13Speaker 3: there'll be some eighty nine to eighty seven th wins
- 13:15Speaker 3: or things like that. It's gonna be fun. So yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 3: I think it will be a defensive minded approach. I
- 13:20Speaker 3: do lean Thunder, but I do think the Timberwolves absolutely
- 13:23Speaker 3: have a chance to pull it.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Off, absolutely all right. And before I let you go, buddy,
- 13:26Speaker 1: I gotta get the prediction from you in terms of
- 13:29Speaker 1: who you think is going to win the NBA Finals,
- 13:33Speaker 1: what that matchup may look like, and who's gonna end
- 13:36Speaker 1: up holding that trophy at the end of this NBA season.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Who do you think that's gonna be.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it comes out of the West, and
- 13:43Speaker 3: I do think the Thunder have paid their dues and
- 13:44Speaker 3: it is their time to ultimately get that victory here.
- 13:47Speaker 3: So I do lean towards either one of these Western
- 13:49Speaker 3: Conference teams coming out of it having the inside path
- 13:52Speaker 3: or expected to win that the overall NBA championship there,
- 13:55Speaker 3: do you think the Thunder will end up being that team?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Not to discount the East, the Pacers and the Nation
- 14:00Speaker 3: spining extent there, They've had incredibly successful seasons and certainly
- 14:03Speaker 3: will at least win a handful of games. I think
- 14:04Speaker 3: it'll be a battle come that time. But I do
- 14:06Speaker 3: think the Thunder is overall the answer, the rightful favorites,
- 14:09Speaker 3: and I think they get the job done this Absolutely.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I'm so glad the Thunder did not get the Sixers pick.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, seriously, we didn't mention it at
- 14:16Speaker 1: the top with the number three pick talk that we had,
- 14:19Speaker 1: but how fantastic is how did that they didn't get
- 14:22Speaker 1: that pick? Because if they had gotten that pick, my god,
- 14:24Speaker 1: they'd be set for like the next twenty five years.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and they basically already are when you look at
- 14:29Speaker 3: how much they still have there. It's incredible the amount
