- 0:01Boundaries are medicine because they help us become aware of what we are here to
- 0:06cultivate and who we truly are.
- 0:19Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You're Here,
- 0:23a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:27reconnect to yourself and remember that most important thing of all,
- 0:31why you're here. I'm Asia Suler, author, teacher,
- 0:37Earth Intuitive. And in this episode today,
- 0:41I wanted to return to a recording I made several years ago now
- 0:45called Boundaries as Medicine.
- 0:49If you listen to the intuitive reading for this month of September
- 0:542026,
- 0:56you'll know that I talked a lot about one of the energies and
- 1:00opportunities up this month is this energy of
- 1:05protecting what has newly come online for us.
- 1:09I spoke in August about this idea of these spontaneous soul retrievals
- 1:14happening, these parts of ourselves coming back online,
- 1:18these tender pieces coming home. And now in September,
- 1:22there is this vibe here of really giving ourselves the
- 1:27kind of protection and shelter that we need as we
- 1:32continue to integrate these tender parts of ourselves,
- 1:37these aspects of ourselves that we're bringing back and reintegrating into the
- 1:41whole.
- 1:42And so one of the best ways to protect
- 1:47ourselves as sensitives is boundaries.
- 1:51So I remember at some point growing up thinking that
- 1:55boundaries always looked like you were drawing a line in the sand or
- 2:00you're about to get into a fight with the rival gang,
- 2:03but boundaries really are about distinguishing what is
- 2:08you and not you.
- 2:10And this is incredibly important for sensitives and empaths.
- 2:15So I thought we would revisit this recording boundaries as
- 2:20medicine in case you're someone that needs the reframe,
- 2:23that it's actually okay for you to set boundaries. It's important,
- 2:28it's life giving, not only for you, but for the world around you as well.
- 2:32Boundaries are what make healthy relationships possible.
- 2:36They're what give you the space that you need to integrate all
- 2:41aspects of yourself,
- 2:42to feel safe at your center and to create what you're here to create in this
- 2:46lifetime. So when you're ready, go ahead and settle in.
- 2:51We're going to drop into this recording boundaries as medicine and at the end
- 2:54I'm going to walk you through one of my favorite practices for
- 2:59just coming back home to myself when I feel scattered,
- 3:03when I feel like my boundaries have slipped.
- 3:07This practice always really supports me as I
- 3:12am someone who is constantly learning and updating my awareness of what
- 3:16boundaries are.
- 3:16And this is something that a lot of us sensitives and empaths are doing.
- 3:21This is part of our journey.
- 3:23It will be different layers and aspects of learning every single time
- 3:28we have to set a new boundary.
- 3:29And so this practice will really help you with that. Okay, let's dive in.
- 3:36Summer is a season of endless expansive possibilities, blooming,
- 3:41flowers, fruit, parties.
- 3:44Summer is also one of the best times to learn about boundaries.
- 3:48In particular, because summer is such a boundaryless time,
- 3:53it's one of the most perfect times for us to begin to practice and understand
- 3:58where our boundaries are and why holding boundaries is so important for growth.
- 4:03At its most basic,
- 4:04boundaries are about learning what is self versus non-self.
- 4:09Now, of course, this is always shifting, right?
- 4:13When we're very, very young,
- 4:15we often identify ourselves with our caretakers.
- 4:19Fast forward to our teenage years and one of the ways in which we know ourselves
- 4:24is through disidentification with our parents or caretakers.
- 4:28So know that this boundary between self and non-self is something that is always
- 4:32shifting and always in the process of being clarified and figured out.
- 4:37I think this is important because sometimes we think setting a boundary is about
- 4:40realizing one hard steadfast rule, and that's not really how it works.
- 4:46So you might be invited to a potluck one week and have it feel awesome,
- 4:51and you might be invited to a potluck the next week and have it feel draining.
- 4:54This is because your boundaries of where self and non-self are have
- 4:59shifted.
- 5:00So I remember hearing once this definition of evil as just that
- 5:05which is not you and doesn't belong within your sphere.
- 5:08And it really liberated me and sort of took some of the fear out of the idea of
- 5:13good and bad and the fear around the protection of boundaries.
- 5:17It's just about recognizing what's you, what's not you.
- 5:21And if it's not you and it's inside your boundaries,
- 5:23it's time to ask it to leave. Really,
- 5:25boundaries is about continually looking towards our subtle edge and where is
- 5:29that subtle edge moving? Think about a garden bed.
- 5:33If you didn't hold the boundaries of what could grow there and couldn't grow
- 5:38there, you wouldn't have a garden. You'd have a wild space,
- 5:43which is beautiful unto itself. But if we want to grow certain kinds of herbs,
- 5:48vegetables, flowers,
- 5:50or even certain ways of being aware of ourself or certain kinds of
- 5:55experiences in our life, we need to be able to have boundaries.
- 6:00Now, just like in gardens,
- 6:03there's no right or wrong in terms of boundaries.
- 6:07It's all about what you are wanting to cultivate.
- 6:11So I learned this lesson really strongly when I moved into the
- 6:16first house that I bought. The garden there was completely overgrown.
- 6:21At one point in time,
- 6:21it had been a beautiful oasis tended by a master gardener and it had been
- 6:26basically left for about five years before I moved in.
- 6:29And the first year I just watched everything to see what was there and what was
- 6:33growing. The second year I started to make some boundaries.
- 6:37I basically had to make the decision,
- 6:38what do I want growing here versus what do I not want growing here?
- 6:43There was no right or wrong answer. It really just came down to what I liked,
- 6:47what worked for me,
- 6:48and what I thought would be most beneficial for the larger landscape.
- 6:52A weed is truly just a plant that's growing in a space where you'd prefer to
- 6:57grow something else. So something that someone else might call a weed,
- 7:01you might call medicine.
- 7:03The same is true for the things in our life that are crossing our
- 7:08boundaries and taking our attention away from what we truly want to cultivate.
- 7:12So whether that's a relationship in your life or whether that's even a thought
- 7:16form or an idea or a looping pattern of thinking that keeps coming
- 7:22back into your mind,
- 7:22this too is a boundary violation and it can be taking you away from that which
- 7:27you really want to cultivate in your life.
- 7:29So this is why boundaries are medicine because they help us become aware of what
- 7:34we are here to cultivate and who we truly are.
- 7:37And the way that we know who we are as individual people in this vastly
- 7:42connected whole is to know where our boundaries are.
- 7:45Drawing boundaries is essential for healing,
- 7:48whether that's drawing a boundary to take a sick day when you're not feeling
- 7:53well,
- 7:53or whether that's literally drawing a boundary between you and a pathogen that's
- 7:57entered into your body.
- 7:59If we can take this example of healing on a physical level and expand it out to
- 8:02this more energetic or esoteric way of thinking about
- 8:07healing,
- 8:08we can see that boundaries are actually what create the container for us to know
- 8:12ourselves and be able to fill out this vessel that we've been
- 8:17given.
- 8:18And that truly is why we're here to fill out this person,
- 8:22this individuality, this personality and give our gifts to the world.
- 8:27And we can't do this without boundaries.
- 8:29The amazing thing is that when we connect into boundaries,
- 8:32it literally can begin to change your consciousness.
- 8:35I like to say that boundaries are psychedelic.
- 8:38When I draw strong boundaries,
- 8:41because of the way in which it actually helps me curate where my thoughts and
- 8:46awareness is going and also where my energy is going,
- 8:49I draw boundaries when I feel like I'm being energetically depleted,
- 8:52I then have more energy for my life, for the things that feed me.
- 8:57I have more energy for the moment. So for me, this feels like time slowing down.
- 9:02It feels like the ability to luxuriate in life's moment to moment
- 9:07joys. Colors are more vivid, experiences are deeper,
- 9:12all of this happening just from drawing boundaries. Now, of course,
- 9:16it's hard at first to begin drawing boundaries and before we get to the numinous
- 9:21psychedelic experience of being immersed in our own energy and all of the power
- 9:25that that could bring to us, we're probably going to be dealing with guilt,
- 9:29shame, or worry, and that's fine. Just know that when those feelings come up,
- 9:35that's the precursor to being able to get to a space where you feel
- 9:39comfortable and good in asserting your boundaries. And again,
- 9:43your boundaries are always shifting too.
- 9:45So the more you practice saying no in a certain realm or drawing a certain
- 9:49boundaries,
- 9:49the more you'll feel comfortable with that and then actually be able to expand
- 9:53the ways in which you are holding a container for your energy and your life
- 9:57purpose.
- 9:58So one of the things that I like to do is I just say to myself,
- 10:03"I'm going to hold a boundary with that." And it comes in oftentimes when I
- 10:07start worrying about something or I start future tripping or I start going into
- 10:12the past and sort of going down that rabbit hole.
- 10:15I will literally say in my mind or sometimes out loud, "You know what?
- 10:18I'm going to draw a boundary with that." It's funny.
- 10:21It shakes up my train of thought and it really helps me realize that one of
- 10:26the first and most important places that I can set boundaries is within my own
- 10:30thoughts. Now,
- 10:32if you're interested in working with plants to help you hold boundaries,
- 10:35I highly recommend working with any thorned plants.
- 10:40So you can work with any thorn plants just talismatically by
- 10:44bringing in a representation of that plant into your spiritual practice,
- 10:48meditating on the idea of that plant or taking a flower essence from that plant.
- 10:53One of my favorites for this is blackberry.
- 10:57Blackberry is a plant that will often grow in after an area has
- 11:02been cleared or clear cut.
- 11:04So blackberry is actually this regenerative plant for helping to
- 11:09restore forests. If you've ever gotten yourself into a thicket of blackberries,
- 11:13you know why,
- 11:14because it keeps people and also other animals out so that these
- 11:19tender young shoots can really get a chance. They are land reclaimers,
- 11:23they are boundary holders in a really sacred way that then create healing and
- 11:27restoration. So if you're interested,
- 11:29you can try working with blackberry flower essence or even just get yourself a
- 11:33quart of blackberries and really be in presence while you're eating them.
- 11:36Invite the energy of that plant in to come help you learn about how beautiful
- 11:42and life-giving boundaries can be.
- 11:44Now I want to leave you with one practice that can help you as you start to
- 11:48implement more boundary setting in your life.
- 11:51So this practice is called EFT or emotional freedom technique,
- 11:54and it's something that I use when I'm having a lot of emotion come up.
- 11:59I find it to be very helpful when I'm trying to draw a boundary,
- 12:02but I'm having guilt or worry come up. So in EFT,
- 12:05we're actually tapping certain meridian points on our body to create greater
- 12:10energy flow.
- 12:11This idea that all negative emotional states are actually coming from a
- 12:15blockage in energy.
- 12:16And if we can just get that flow moving by acknowledging what we're feeling and
- 12:21tapping on these places on our body,
- 12:23that it can actually help us come into presence and then through that awareness,
- 12:27just begin to take the edge off the way in which that thought is controlling us.
- 12:32So if you're interested in this,
- 12:33there are tons of tutorials on EFT on YouTube or online elsewhere so you
- 12:38can look deeper into it,
- 12:39but for now you don't have to know anything about EFT to just follow along with
- 12:43me with this exercise. Wonderful.
- 12:46So let's go ahead and now do this EFT tapping exercise.
- 12:51I decided to rerecord this part as the original
- 12:56recording was a video because I want to make sure that I'm listing the different
- 13:00places that we're going to be tapping here.
- 13:03So if you're listening while you're driving,
- 13:06you can just follow along in your mind's eye and literally imagine tapping these
- 13:10places. But if you do have the space,
- 13:13if you're in a place where you can do this,
- 13:14go ahead and settle in and we're going to walk through this EFT
- 13:19technique.
- 13:23So we're using this specifically when you're feeling guilt come up around
- 13:27setting a boundary,
- 13:28which is one of the biggest emotions that will come up for us sensitives and
- 13:31empaths when we do set that boundary.
- 13:33But obviously you can use EFT tapping for any
- 13:38feeling that is causing you strife,
- 13:41any feeling that is causing you pain.
- 13:45One more quick note before we begin. A lot of times in EFT circles,
- 13:50the phrase is,
- 13:51even though I still completely accept myself or
- 13:57I still completely love and accept myself.
- 13:59One of the things that I have found over time is that if I'm not in a place
- 14:04where I feel very accepting of myself or I'm feeling very loving towards
- 14:09myself, that it can actually sort of trigger an inner alarm within me.
- 14:14So the phrase that I like to use is even though I feel whatever the feeling is
- 14:18or whatever the thought is,
- 14:19I can still show up for myself because just by tapping
- 14:24in that moment, I am always showing up for myself.
- 14:28So that's the basic phrase that we're going to use here.
- 14:32And you'll notice that the statement might shift over the course of me tapping
- 14:37and this is normal and natural.
- 14:40What I often find is that as I tap, my feelings change.
- 14:44What I'm saying to myself changes.
- 14:46And so what I'm saying out loud as I tap will reflect that.
- 14:54So if I was doing this for myself right now,
- 14:56I would first think about how bad I feel in this moment on a scale
- 15:01from zero to 10. This sort of gives me a good recognition of where I'm at,
- 15:05where my starting point is. How bad does this guilt feel, for example,
- 15:11with this phrase that we're using. Okay.
- 15:14And so now I'm going to step into this with the statement,
- 15:17even though I'm feeling guilty, I can still show up for myself.
- 15:23All right, so we begin here
- 15:28by tapping what we call your karate chop point.
- 15:31So this is the blade of your hand underneath your pinky right on the
- 15:35side of your hand. And so you just start tapping with your fingers.
- 15:40You take your other hand, you could use two fingers, you could use three,
- 15:43four fingers,
- 15:45but you go ahead and start tapping on this side of your opposite hand in this
- 15:49karate chop place, and you say your beginning statement out loud three times.
- 15:54So even though I'm feeling guilty right now,
- 15:58I can still show up for myself in this moment.
- 16:03And I normally repeat this about three times.
- 16:05Even though I was feeling guilty right now,
- 16:07I can still show up for myself in this moment.
- 16:10Even though I'm feeling guilty right now,
- 16:12I can still show up for myself in this moment.
- 16:15And then we move on to the very top of our head.
- 16:18So you can follow along with my statement.
- 16:20If you have your own statement about something that you are working with right
- 16:23now, go ahead and just drop into that. So I'm tapping now with my hand,
- 16:27either hand is fine, the very top and center of my head. And I'm saying,
- 16:32even though I'm feeling bad about feeling guilty,
- 16:37I still can show up for myself in this moment.
- 16:41And now I go to the inside edge of one of my eyebrows.
- 16:45Either eyebrow is fine.
- 16:47We're going to that inside edge where your nose meets your eyebrow,
- 16:52tapping here and deepening into that statement.
- 16:57Even though I'm feeling anxious about how guilty I am,
- 17:03how guilty I feel, I can still show up for myself in this moment.
- 17:07And now we're moving to the outside edge of one of our
- 17:12eyebrows where your eyebrow meets your temple. And again,
- 17:15you might notice that your statement begins to shift here. So for me,
- 17:21maybe it might shift into,
- 17:24even though I'm worried I might have hurt someone's feelings,
- 17:28I can still show up in a loving way for myself.
- 17:32So I was able to bring in the love in that moment.
- 17:35Now I'm going to move on to tapping the bone underneath one of my eyes.
- 17:39Your cheekbones right underneath any one of your eyes is fine.
- 17:44Even though I feel heavy right now,
- 17:47I can still show up for myself.
- 17:50I can still hold space for myself.
- 17:54And now we move to tapping between your nose and your upper lip,
- 18:00right in that divot right there.
- 18:03Even though I'm experiencing heaviness right now,
- 18:06I can still hold loving space for myself.
- 18:11And now you tap between your lower lip and your chin.
- 18:17Sometimes people like to be right on their chin or a little bit up from their
- 18:20chin towards the crease.
- 18:22Even though I'm dealing with a swirl of
- 18:26feelings in this moment, I still love and accept myself.
- 18:30So that's where I'm landing with this one.
- 18:33And then you move to tap beneath one of your collarbones.
- 18:37Sometimes I do both at the same time with both hands underneath one of the
- 18:41collarbones,
- 18:42but you're finding that notch just beneath the inside edge of your
- 18:47collarbone,
- 18:49right in the center there of your collarbone on either side.
- 18:55Even though I am dealing with a lot of feelings today,
- 19:00I still completely love and accept myself and the decision that I made. Ooh,
- 19:04it just moved again.
- 19:06And now we take our hand and we tap underneath one armpit.
- 19:11So this is the final tap and the sequence,
- 19:13and this is about four inches below your armpit. Again, on either side is fine,
- 19:18and you might find it's a little bit tender.
- 19:20So this is the very last place that you're going to tap.
- 19:25Even though this decision was hard for me,
- 19:29I still completely love and accept myself.
- 19:33And you can linger here for as long as you need, but when you're ready,
- 19:38let the tapping cease.
- 19:41And now you just stop and reassess how you feel about the same
- 19:46issue, about the same feeling, remeasure it.
- 19:51If it began at a certain number, maybe
- 19:54on a scale of zero to 10 of how bad it felt I was at a seven,
- 19:58maybe I'm at a six now. Maybe I'm at a five, maybe I'm at a three.
- 20:04But just notice what is here. And if it didn't lower at all,
- 20:08that's completely fine.
- 20:09It's really normal to need to go through this process two or three times.
- 20:14Normally I tap for about that long, maybe two to three minutes.
- 20:18If it's really something that stuck for me, I might tap for about five minutes.
- 20:24If you need a little refresher on these points,
- 20:27you can definitely go ahead and just look up EFT tapping.
- 20:31There's a lot of places where they list these points.
- 20:37And what I find with tapping, especially for us sensitives,
- 20:40is that it really brings us back into our bodies.
- 20:42And a lot of what happens when we start to feel really guilty about the
- 20:46boundaries that we're setting is that we're actually lifting up and out of our
- 20:50bodies. We're not inside of ourselves anymore.
- 20:53We're getting caught up in other people's feelings,
- 20:55worrying about the way other people are in this world, what they need,
- 21:00what they're thinking.
- 21:02And so tapping really brings us back into our center and from there we can
- 21:07really encounter the feeling and allow it to dissolve.
- 21:10So this is one of my absolute favorite tools for this,
- 21:13and I hope it's helpful for you as we step into this month of
- 21:19really bringing a bit more of that protection energy online,
- 21:23of reminding ourselves that it's completely normal, natural,
- 21:26and needed to set boundaries so that we can create in the ways we want to
- 21:30create. We can relate in the ways we want to relate and that we can allow our
- 21:35life force to be something that is feeding us, not just feeding other people.
- 21:41So as we move even deeper into this month,
- 21:45may you be supported in all of the tender new things you are tending
- 21:50to right now, all of the things you are growing and pouring your energy into.
- 21:54May you remember that you deserve this kind of boundaries,
- 21:59these kinds of boundaries of love and protection and healing,
- 22:04and may you also remember that most important thing of all,
- 22:08why you're here.
