- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark Review podcast. I'm Megan,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm a
- 0:16Speaker 1: former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, this is a bonus
- 0:20Speaker 1: movie review of The Love Hypothesis, which is now streaming
- 0:24Speaker 1: on Prime Video. It is an adaptation of the book
- 0:26Speaker 1: by the same name by writer Allie Hazelwood. Did you
- 0:31Speaker 1: read this book? I'm guessing you did. I did. We're
- 0:32Speaker 1: going to talk about that when we get into our review. Awesome.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Of course, I haven't read it, but... I remember Allie
- 0:40Speaker 1: Hazelwood is someone you like to read, right? Indeed, she is.
- 0:44Speaker 1: How exciting. I'm so excited to hear if the movie
- 0:49Speaker 1: worked for you or not. And yeah, I have some questions.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Okie dokie. Are you ready for a synopsis? I am.
- 0:57Speaker 1: After an impulsive kiss, two scientists end up in a
- 1:01Speaker 1: fake relationship, testing their theories about love and each other.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The Love Hypothesis was directed by Claire Scanlon, who is
- 1:09Speaker 1: best known in the rom-com world for directing Netflix's Set
- 1:13Speaker 1: It Up. I don't know what Set It Up is.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I do think I've seen it. I think it's like
- 1:17Speaker 1: a workplace enemies to lovers situation. Oh, no. My least
- 1:20Speaker 1: favorite trope. Right. Sarah Rothschild wrote the screenplay adapting, as
- 1:25Speaker 1: Megan said, Allie Hazelwood's bestselling 2021 novel of the same name.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Lily Reinhart stars as Olive Smith. She's best known for
- 1:33Speaker 1: playing Betty Cooper on Riverdale. Tom Bateman stars as Dr.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Adam Carlson. He's recognizable in the series Murder on the
- 1:42Speaker 1: Orient Express. Series? I don't know. It could be a movie.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I think it's a movie. Okay. Rachel Marsh plays best
- 1:49Speaker 1: friend on You Might Recognize Her from Netflix's Unstable. Again, Unstable.
- 1:53Speaker 1: What is that? Don't know. I don't know what that
- 1:55Speaker 1: is either. And I adored her. I thought she was
- 1:58Speaker 1: super cute. Yeah, she's great. Jaboukie Young White plays Malcolm.
- 2:02Speaker 1: His previous roles include Quinta Brunson's ex-boyfriend Eric on Abbott Elementary.
- 2:07Speaker 1: He's also a comedian and former Daily Show correspondent. Do
- 2:11Speaker 1: you recognize him from... You like that Abbott Elementary, don't you?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Didn't you watch that? I do, but I don't know
- 2:17Speaker 1: if I... I don't recognize him. Okay. Nicholas DuVernay appears
- 2:22Speaker 1: as Jeremy. He recently appeared in The White Lotus. Artie
- 2:26Speaker 1: Froshan appears as Dr. Tom Benton. You might recognize Artie
- 2:29Speaker 1: from House of the Dragon. Another show I do not watch.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I think that might have to do with, you know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: that like, you know, that show. I do. Game of Thrones.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. Hey, Wendy, what's your first impression
- 2:43Speaker 1: of The Love Hypothesis? I'm no prude, but somewhere during
- 2:46Speaker 1: that hotel scene, even I was like, should I give
- 2:49Speaker 1: you two some privacy? It was. It was very steamy.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I may have like fast forwarded a little bit because...
- 2:56Speaker 1: You were uncomfortable? Not because I was uncomfortable, but my
- 2:59Speaker 1: daughter was home and kept coming in and out of
- 3:00Speaker 1: the room. And I just like, there's something about like
- 3:02Speaker 1: me watching like a spicy scene with my teenage daughter
- 3:06Speaker 1: viewing me watching a spicy scene. I was like, I gotta,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I gotta not have this. Tap, tap, tap right through this. Yes, right.
- 3:14Speaker 1: My first impression is simply, damn, I love a good rom-com.
- 3:18Speaker 1: When it's done well, it's so enjoyable to watch. So
- 3:23Speaker 1: I want to start our likes by telling you that,
- 3:27Speaker 1: as we talked about, I did read The Love Hypothesis.
- 3:30Speaker 1: This is Ali Hazelwood's debut novel. Oh, interesting. Yes. And
- 3:36Speaker 1: this was the read that launched a thousand reading ships,
- 3:41Speaker 1: as it were. I have read- For you? Yes, I
- 3:45Speaker 1: have read all of Ali Hazelwood's books except for like
- 3:48Speaker 1: the two most recent. So and there are quite a few.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm a big fan. Like, it works for me. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: love her women in STEM. I like her writing style.
- 3:57Speaker 1: They're just fun, easy to get lost in. I love
- 4:00Speaker 1: a romance-y trope. And so, although I didn't remember going
- 4:04Speaker 1: into this movie, a lot of the details, that's just
- 4:08Speaker 1: how I am. It was five years ago. That's not
- 4:11Speaker 1: where my brain is. Some of it did come back,
- 4:13Speaker 1: but I will say it did invoke that like giddy
- 4:16Speaker 1: kicking your feet feeling of like, oh, a little sunny
- 4:20Speaker 1: romance while I was watching. Don't worry, I have notes, but... Overall,
- 4:27Speaker 1: because of that history I have with the book and
- 4:29Speaker 1: the storytelling, I did find that that was a little
- 4:31Speaker 1: bit easier for me to just, like, slide right into that, like, oh,
- 4:34Speaker 1: we're in a good rom-com lane. Yeah. And I think overall,
- 4:39Speaker 1: for me... This did really scratch that rom-com itch, especially
- 4:45Speaker 1: for you and I, who are regular Hallmark viewers by trade. Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And obviously, there's a lot of romance happening there. I
- 4:54Speaker 1: just want to see it done well. Yeah. And I
- 4:57Speaker 1: later in this episode want to talk a little bit about,
- 4:59Speaker 1: would Hallmark viewers like this movie? I have some thoughts. Hmm.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But tell me what you liked. Well... Let's talk this
- 5:06Speaker 1: fake dating trope. This is my trope. This is my favorite. Like,
- 5:10Speaker 1: I remember being a kid and watching Can't Buy Me Love.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And that is my first exposure to a fake dating trope.
- 5:18Speaker 1: This was very much in that lane a little bit
- 5:21Speaker 1: in terms of like, let's pick our end date of
- 5:25Speaker 1: when we're going to break up and like, whatever, right?
- 5:29Speaker 1: I was all in on it. I just love that trope.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I wish, you know, Hallmark. I can't help but reference Hallmark.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Hallmark does it occasionally and sometimes they do it well
- 5:39Speaker 1: and sometimes they don't. Sure. Like anything. Yeah. Yeah. I
- 5:43Speaker 1: also really, really enjoyed Lily Reinhart as Olive. I watched
- 5:48Speaker 1: the first season of Riverdale and then it kind of
- 5:51Speaker 1: went like weird sideways. Like it wasn't as interesting to
- 5:55Speaker 1: me anymore. That's my same trajectory with Riverdale as well.
- 5:58Speaker 1: She's so freaking adorable. But what, so her aside, like I,
- 6:04Speaker 1: she's real cute. But I really liked the character of Olive.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We have this smart, ambitious, good at what she does character.
- 6:18Speaker 1: This woman in STEM, which we don't get a lot of.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Do we ever? I don't feel like we get women
- 6:28Speaker 1: in this scientific field. I think that's what draws me
- 6:31Speaker 1: to Allie Hazelwood is she writes these smart, unapologetically smart women.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I love it. And I like being set in that place. Yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I love that. But what I also liked was that
- 6:43Speaker 1: she was super awkward and a little bit insecure and
- 6:47Speaker 1: doesn't always believe in herself either. And her entire identity
- 6:51Speaker 1: wasn't even about like... I need to find a boyfriend
- 6:54Speaker 1: or I need to get married or I need to
- 6:56Speaker 1: like whatever, which we are so accustomed to watching. Well,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and in fact, in the book, she's almost like asexual.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Like she's almost like uncomfortable with the idea of intimacy. Oh, interesting.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So it's a whole arc that we don't. You could
- 7:10Speaker 1: infer that a little bit from the way she is
- 7:13Speaker 1: portrayed by Lily Reinhart, but they don't go there in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the movie. Hmm. Okay, that. Leaves me with some questions
- 7:22Speaker 1: that we'll talk about. We will talk about. My favorite
- 7:26Speaker 1: part of this movie is the relationship between Olive and Ann. 100%. Right?
- 7:32Speaker 1: I actually think it's the most well-developed relationship in the movie. Yes, totally.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And in the beginning... As I was watching, I almost thought,
- 7:39Speaker 1: wait a minute, like what's happening here? Because there's a,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I say a lot, but there's a fair amount of
- 7:48Speaker 1: setup of her relationship, of her early days before. And
- 7:52Speaker 1: I don't, if I recall correctly, that's not where the
- 7:54Speaker 1: book starts, but book has the liberty of going back
- 7:58Speaker 1: and retelling those stories where a movie doesn't. And I
- 8:01Speaker 1: think the scene where Ann takes her home for the
- 8:05Speaker 1: holidays really cements her place In their relationship and their,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you know, their first meeting in class and all of
- 8:12Speaker 1: those things. You know that Ann is going to ride
- 8:17Speaker 1: or die. Yeah. For Olive. Oh, my God. When Ann
- 8:20Speaker 1: walks in the class and Olive is sitting in the
- 8:22Speaker 1: back and she's like, what are you doing back here? Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 1: She's like, we're here to be seen. And I was like,
- 8:26Speaker 1: God damn. I loved Ann. I loved all the friends
- 8:31Speaker 1: on and Malcolm. Jeremy, actually, to a lesser extent, but
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think he's intentionally a little underdeveloped. But Malcolm is
- 8:38Speaker 1: so fun. He just has some fun lines. And complicated, too.
- 8:45Speaker 1: You know, at the end when he's not doing well
- 8:47Speaker 1: at school and he's like, I'm here because my parents
- 8:49Speaker 1: want me to be here. I mean, that's a very
- 8:52Speaker 1: realistic thing. narrative of somebody that age who maybe has
- 8:59Speaker 1: fallen into something that they truly are not passionate about or... Yes. Yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: it was good. Yeah. I really loved the dialogue and
- 9:08Speaker 1: the pacing of this movie. This movie moves, it's quick
- 9:11Speaker 1: and snappy, and it sounds current, like the dialogue, right
- 9:16Speaker 1: down to, I think it might've been Olive who was like,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I gotta lock in. And that's a very Gen Z
- 9:22Speaker 1: thing to say right now, but it's not... Too young
- 9:25Speaker 1: or like a Gen X or like she doesn't understand
- 9:27Speaker 1: what that means, you know, so feels young and contemporary,
- 9:31Speaker 1: but too young. My daughter's lock screen on her phone
- 9:34Speaker 1: is a photo of Ryan Gosling with a speech bubble saying,
- 9:37Speaker 1: could you please just lock the freak in? I love that.
- 9:41Speaker 1: It's so funny that she's into Ryan Gosling. He's her
- 9:43Speaker 1: comfort actor. Oh. She just adores him. And honestly, I
- 9:49Speaker 1: can't say that I blame her as an aside. Project
- 9:52Speaker 1: Hail Mary, he made that. I don't think it would
- 9:54Speaker 1: have been the same experience without him in that movie. Like,
- 9:57Speaker 1: he really is a... What other movies of his does
- 9:59Speaker 1: she like? Well, La La Land is her favorite movie. Okay.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And I'm trying to think of what else. She has
- 10:07Speaker 1: not seen Crazy Stupid Love because I think there's too
- 10:09Speaker 1: much sex in that movie for her. It's one of
- 10:12Speaker 1: those things I'm like, just don't tell me you're watching it.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Just don't, you know, just watch it when I'm not around.
- 10:16Speaker 1: What about his older stuff? I don't know. The notebook? Barbie.
- 10:20Speaker 1: She hasn't seen The Notebook. What? And she did say
- 10:23Speaker 1: the other day, she's like, I really need to watch that.
- 10:24Speaker 1: She needs to watch that. And there's also another one.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Remember when Ryan Gosling dated Sandra Bullock? I do not
- 10:31Speaker 1: remember that. Yes, and they were in a movie together
- 10:33Speaker 1: because they met on set. Did we recently talk about
- 10:36Speaker 1: Sandra Bullock being 62? We did. God. They were in
- 10:39Speaker 1: a movie together, 2002, called Murder by Numbers. It's a
- 10:43Speaker 1: book adaptation, isn't it? Crime thriller. I don't know, actually.
- 10:46Speaker 1: He's like a high school student who's suspected of the crime.
- 10:50Speaker 1: That's the first movie I remember him in. Lars and
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Real Girl. I wonder if she would like that.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I've never seen it. I don't know that movie. Anyhow,
- 10:57Speaker 1: let's talk Adam. Okay. I was drawn to him. He
- 11:03Speaker 1: is intimidating. Do you ever have the experience where you're like...
- 11:07Speaker 1: I feel uncomfortable, but I and I don't want to
- 11:09Speaker 1: look at you. And then you realize, oh, I'm watching
- 11:11Speaker 1: this on TV like I can stare at this person.
- 11:15Speaker 1: That might be a unique experience for you, but I
- 11:19Speaker 1: can see it. That is me. And he was so
- 11:22Speaker 1: intimidating and also like. What I like, though, is when
- 11:28Speaker 1: he starts to, like, come out with all of a
- 11:30Speaker 1: little bit. Like, he has a softer side. He has
- 11:33Speaker 1: this dry humor that I am super drawn to. Harvey
- 11:37Speaker 1: was like, is he socially awkward? Well, that is actually
- 11:43Speaker 1: in my wishes. Okay. All right. Well, we will talk
- 11:46Speaker 1: in the wishes about that. But there were many times,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know, we watched Love Island this summer, right? And
- 11:53Speaker 1: there was a lot of talk about that one guy.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I can't remember his name. But this Melanie. Yeah. Like that's.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I was like. Corbin. Corbin GPT. Yes. I was like
- 12:04Speaker 1: Adam GPT. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So robotic sometimes. Sure. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And finally, my last like was I did think these
- 12:14Speaker 1: two had moments of chemistry. Hold on. They were incredibly
- 12:21Speaker 1: cute together sometimes. And then sometimes it was like so
- 12:25Speaker 1: painfully awkward to watch, which was on purpose. Yes. But
- 12:30Speaker 1: then they were saving all that chemistry for that hotel scene.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And boy, let's take a quick break and come back
- 12:39Speaker 1: to talk about our wishes. So let's talk what we
- 12:49Speaker 1: wished for while watching The Love Hypothesis. For me... I
- 12:54Speaker 1: do think this adaptation was done well overall. However, as
- 12:59Speaker 1: with most book to movie adaptations, I am left wanting more.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And there's only so much you can do in an
- 13:06Speaker 1: under two hour span. And I think with a limited series,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you could have taken this to a different level. Oh, interesting.
- 13:13Speaker 1: And here are the things that I would like to
- 13:14Speaker 1: see more of. To your point. Adam is very almost
- 13:19Speaker 1: robotic in the beginning. I did hear a review that
- 13:23Speaker 1: compared him to Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. And
- 13:26Speaker 1: then he's not. And he kind of comes out of that.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And while he's still buttoned up and by the book
- 13:35Speaker 1: and no nonsense, his personality does change. And there's not
- 13:39Speaker 1: really a... visible path to that change. It's not like, oh,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Lily loosened him up. It's not Lily. Olive loosened him up.
- 13:48Speaker 1: That is missing for me. I think Adam overall is underdeveloped.
- 13:52Speaker 1: We just don't know a whole lot about what makes
- 13:55Speaker 1: this man tick. I think we're leaning so heavily on
- 14:01Speaker 1: Lily being this complex character. And she is. And Lily,
- 14:06Speaker 1: damn it. Olive being this complex character. And she is.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And she is the one to watch in this movie,
- 14:12Speaker 1: of course. And I appreciate a woman being more interesting
- 14:16Speaker 1: than the man. But I also think it would be
- 14:17Speaker 1: nice to know a little bit more about Adam and
- 14:20Speaker 1: perhaps what it is that has made him the way
- 14:23Speaker 1: that he is. I mean, other than he gives her
- 14:25Speaker 1: that explanation of he's a hard professor teacher because he
- 14:29Speaker 1: had a hard one himself. Yes. I just think there's
- 14:34Speaker 1: more to him than this personality trait. One dimensional. Tom, Dr. Benton, Dr. Evil,
- 14:41Speaker 1: the actual Dr. Evil in this movie. He is evil,
- 14:45Speaker 1: but we only really know that before he pulls his
- 14:49Speaker 1: mask off in the end. There are a few looks.
- 14:51Speaker 1: You're like, oh, is there something going on here? But
- 14:55Speaker 1: you don't really know that he's bad in the book.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You know that he's bad before he's truly bad. And so...
- 15:02Speaker 1: There's something to be said for the shock of that,
- 15:04Speaker 1: for the audience feeling that alongside Olive, but it also felt,
- 15:10Speaker 1: can also feel like it comes out of nowhere. Yeah. So,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and finally, I think a longer format would have given
- 15:20Speaker 1: us a little more time to see Olive and Adam's
- 15:24Speaker 1: physical relationship develop because the beauty of fake dating is
- 15:28Speaker 1: that there's a point at which You're being physically affectionate
- 15:33Speaker 1: because you have to be for show. And then those
- 15:36Speaker 1: affectionate moments feel real. Yes. And that is the best
- 15:42Speaker 1: part about the fake dating, that in between where you're
- 15:45Speaker 1: both starting to feel things, but you can't let on
- 15:47Speaker 1: because you're just supposed to be playing a role here. Right.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And I don't think we got enough of that. It
- 15:54Speaker 1: was kind of a, for me, a full 180 in
- 15:57Speaker 1: terms of... They come back to the hotel and like
- 16:04Speaker 1: get crazy. Yes. I mean, he does carry her back
- 16:06Speaker 1: in because her feet hurt, but that's like not enough
- 16:09Speaker 1: to go from A to... No, we needed to have multiple, multiple,
- 16:12Speaker 1: multiple instances of them. You know, they have to kiss.
- 16:17Speaker 1: They have to hold hands. He slides his arm around
- 16:19Speaker 1: her shoulder. There's all of these moments and we need
- 16:22Speaker 1: to see that develop before it's... Now we're having a
- 16:26Speaker 1: prolonged sex scene. Yeah. Yeah. Didn't you think it was
- 16:31Speaker 1: kind of long? I do think it was kind of long.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Maybe it's the homework watcher in me. Totally. Where it's
- 16:37Speaker 1: just implied, what did you wish for? Okay. I'm going
- 16:42Speaker 1: to piggyback off of your thoughts on Adam needing to
- 16:48Speaker 1: be more developed. I also think Olive needed to be
- 16:52Speaker 1: a little more developed in terms of, yes, we know
- 16:56Speaker 1: she's brilliant and we know what her motivation is to
- 16:59Speaker 1: study this field of science right but tell me why
- 17:05Speaker 1: she shrinks when she tries to like talk about her
- 17:08Speaker 1: work or advocate for herself like I didn't think she
- 17:13Speaker 1: is it imposter syndrome is it being in this male
- 17:15Speaker 1: dominated field like why does she get so tangled up
- 17:20Speaker 1: right we have that whole big party scene where Tom
- 17:24Speaker 1: puts her on the spot does not go well And
- 17:30Speaker 1: then we see like Adam kind of come to the
- 17:32Speaker 1: rescue and help like, you know, pump her up for
- 17:35Speaker 1: future like speaking presentations or whatever. But I'm like, but why?
- 17:39Speaker 1: Why are we like that? Why is she like that? Right. Also,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I do agree that for a shock value, when Tom
- 17:52Speaker 1: reveals who he is, when he tells her like, you're
- 17:57Speaker 1: going to have to have sex with me or whatever.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I didn't say it like that, but... It was a
- 18:02Speaker 1: little more crass. It made me so angry. And I
- 18:07Speaker 1: love that the movie went there. And unfortunately, I have
- 18:11Speaker 1: to imagine some version of this happens all too often. Sure.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Especially in that field. And I kind of wish... Part
- 18:22Speaker 1: of me kind of wish... We could have seen that
- 18:25Speaker 1: sprinkled throughout the movie, not just in terms of Tom
- 18:29Speaker 1: and Olive, but show us how difficult it is for
- 18:33Speaker 1: women in this field. Right. They talk about it a lot.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I didn't think so. I mean. Well, I think Ann
- 18:39Speaker 1: makes a lot of references. Sure. She makes a lot
- 18:42Speaker 1: of snarky references. But we don't necessarily see it happening. Right.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I mean, that could be like us making snarky references
- 18:49Speaker 1: about like. us getting more criticism over other people you
- 18:54Speaker 1: know what I mean um but we don't really talk
- 18:57Speaker 1: about it so lastly um oh a couple things a
- 19:02Speaker 1: couple things when Adam breaks things off after they sleep
- 19:05Speaker 1: together this really pissed me off this was like low-hanging
- 19:10Speaker 1: fruit to me does this happen in the book too
- 19:12Speaker 1: I don't I honestly don't remember but I do know
- 19:16Speaker 1: that like they do break up I mean, okay, so
- 19:20Speaker 1: maybe Adam doesn't want to potentially divert Olive's trajectory. Yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 1: this is one. It is so frustrating because it's like,
- 19:31Speaker 1: we just have a conversation. She's a smart grown woman
- 19:35Speaker 1: with working on a PhD. You can't have a conversation
- 19:37Speaker 1: with her. And let her make that call. She's not
- 19:41Speaker 1: this like flighty teenager who's gonna be like, oh, I'm
- 19:42Speaker 1: gonna give up on my life's dream because we banged
- 19:46Speaker 1: last night. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. I think it... it diminishes her.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Like his behavior diminishes his opinion of her. Yeah, totally.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Finally for me, Tom's downfall was not nearly satisfying enough
- 20:02Speaker 1: for me. You know, yes, Adam, this is what I
- 20:06Speaker 1: don't like. Adam comes in and like confronts him in
- 20:08Speaker 1: front of the class and everybody's like filming it, which
- 20:10Speaker 1: was so 2026. But I didn't want Adam, I didn't
- 20:17Speaker 1: want Adam to do it. I wanted Olive to be
- 20:19Speaker 1: the one who takes Tom down. Yeah. yeah somehow some
- 20:23Speaker 1: way yeah you know like I don't think I need
- 20:25Speaker 1: to come save the day I hear you so that
- 20:28Speaker 1: was kind of like frustrating to me a little bit
- 20:32Speaker 1: that's it all right well let's talk did you see
- 20:34Speaker 1: that I only have one and it is the soundtrack
- 20:38Speaker 1: I loved the soundtrack it had like a cool young
- 20:43Speaker 1: songs that I hear because I have a Daughter of
- 20:46Speaker 1: a certain age. You know what I mean? Yes. Well,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I have so many. Okay. First of all, you may
- 20:50Speaker 1: or may not know this, but this book started as
- 20:52Speaker 1: Star Wars fan fiction. What? It was written because Allie
- 20:57Speaker 1: Hazelwood did not like the way that Kylo Ren and
- 20:59Speaker 1: Rey's story went. And so she rewrote that on a
- 21:03Speaker 1: fan fiction site, and then it turned into The Love Hypothesis. God.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Tom Bateman. How do you get from Kylo Ren and
- 21:09Speaker 1: Rey– Well, you know, Fifty Shades of Grey is Twilight
- 21:15Speaker 1: fan fiction. What? I didn't know that either. Twilight fan fiction?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Pretty sure. Okay. So anyway, Tom Bateman himself is married
- 21:23Speaker 1: to Daisy Ridley, who plays Ray in the movie. Is
- 21:26Speaker 1: that on purpose? Like, was he cast on purpose for that?
- 21:29Speaker 1: I think that's, I think that maybe is accidental. However,
- 21:32Speaker 1: the Gracie Abrams song that plays in the beginning, her dad,
- 21:35Speaker 1: JJ Abrams, did direct the movie. Oh my God, you're right.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And the musical director on this movie said that wasn't ideal.
- 21:42Speaker 1: They saw on TikTok. They were like, they need to
- 21:43Speaker 1: play Gracie Abrams in this. movie and they do oh
- 21:45Speaker 1: my god there is menacing music while tom is walking
- 21:48Speaker 1: specifically when he's tom adam well adam is walking specifically
- 21:53Speaker 1: when he's going to get the bad guy and it
- 21:56Speaker 1: is meant to invoke like Star Wars, Darth Vader, Kylo
- 22:00Speaker 1: Ren music. Wow. Yes. You know, now thinking about it,
- 22:05Speaker 1: there is kind of a Kylo Ren vibe to Adam, right?
- 22:09Speaker 1: And he dresses head to toe black all the time, too.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I mean. Also, Maggie, Girls Gone Hallmark team member over here,
- 22:17Speaker 1: had emailed us some did you see that's Now, she
- 22:19Speaker 1: did include those two that I just told you about.
- 22:21Speaker 1: How surprised Mackie watched this movie? Well, I have to
- 22:24Speaker 1: tell you, first of all, I was very proud that
- 22:25Speaker 1: I had that information before Mackie sent it to me.
- 22:27Speaker 1: But Mackie had a third one, and she said, Head
- 22:29Speaker 1: of Her Heels by the Go-Go's plays over the mid-movie
- 22:32Speaker 1: montage and felt like it could have been a nice
- 22:34Speaker 1: nod to 13 Going on 30, as the same song
- 22:36Speaker 1: plays over the opening scene in 13 Going on 30.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And I did read that this movie was intended to
- 22:42Speaker 1: be kind of an homage to classic rom-coms. So... Interesting.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I love that Go-Go song so much. Fun all the
- 22:49Speaker 1: way around. Now, I want to ask the question, would
- 22:52Speaker 1: a Hallmark watcher like this movie? My thought is that
- 22:56Speaker 1: the answer is maybe. And the reason I say that is...
- 23:00Speaker 1: A non-answer. Okay. In the sense that it's overall a well-done...
- 23:06Speaker 1: Enemies to lovers, fun to watch rom-com. Okay. It leans
- 23:11Speaker 1: into the romance tropes that are very common in Hallmark movies.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I think the chemistry is there. There is a sense
- 23:16Speaker 1: of yearning. The people are beautiful. I felt things while
- 23:19Speaker 1: watching this. On the other hand, it is a little
- 23:22Speaker 1: more than a PG rating. It's rated R. Yeah. There's
- 23:26Speaker 1: a very steamy sex scene. There's a lot of swearing. Yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 1: These are things that do not offend me, but may
- 23:32Speaker 1: offend the Hallmark watcher who watches it for quote unquote
- 23:35Speaker 1: clean television. I did think as an aside, her coffee
- 23:39Speaker 1: order was so giving. Like the girl who loves Christmas
- 23:43Speaker 1: so much, she orders like a double mocha peppermint hot chocolate.
- 23:49Speaker 1: So if you are a Hallmark watcher as a Girls
- 23:52Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark listener and spice is not your thing. This
- 23:57Speaker 1: movie probably isn't for you. But if you're a Hallmark
- 24:01Speaker 1: watcher who likes a broad variety of things, we do
- 24:06Speaker 1: have a listener who watched this movie just because of us. Really?
- 24:10Speaker 1: Because we promoted that we were going to be reviewing it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And she was like, wait, what is this? And then
- 24:16Speaker 1: her name is Elizabeth. And then she was like, I
- 24:18Speaker 1: can't wait to hear your review. I loved it. So.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Let's rate this movie out of four stars. It's so hard.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Five stars. Sorry. Yeah, it's so hard. This was so hard.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I gave it four stars. That's interesting. Why? So, well,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I give it four stars to you, four out of five.
- 24:37Speaker 1: But if I'm like comparing it to Hallmark movies, like it's,
- 24:40Speaker 1: I wouldn't do that, right? It's a 10. Come on. Yes. Okay.
- 24:45Speaker 1: We're on the same page there. Yeah. So thank you
- 24:47Speaker 1: for listening to this episode of Girls Gone Hallmark. We
- 24:50Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed this bonus review of The Love Hypothesis.
- 24:53Speaker 1: We'll be back with more Hallmark reviews next time. Goodbye. Bye.
- 25:09Speaker 1: All right, friends, before we go, just a quick heads up.
- 25:11Speaker 1: You're about to hear some ads. These little gems help
- 25:13Speaker 1: us keep the show running and the Hallmark love flowing.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So do with that info what you will. Grab a snack,
- 25:20Speaker 1: hit the skip button, or maybe, just maybe, listen in
- 25:23Speaker 1: and discover your new favorite product. Bye.
