- 0:29I'm Tammy's daughter and mom
- 0:30to a very energetic little dude called H.
- 0:33We're glad you're here.
- 0:35Let's get started.
- 0:36Welcome to our very first podcast.
- 0:38We're so excited that you're here.
- 0:40If you're looking for a better way
- 0:42to nurture and raise your child,
- 0:43to understand what's going on
- 0:45in those little minds and bodies,
- 0:46and to be able to confidently and intentionally
- 0:49navigate whatever arises,
- 0:50regardless of the situation, the age, or the stage,
- 0:53you're in the right place.
- 0:54We're here to support you on your parenting journey.
- 0:57In these first couple of episodes,
- 0:59we're gonna share a little bit about ourselves
- 1:00and some of our own journey,
- 1:02and a bit of an overview of the guiding mindset principles
- 1:04that support our becoming guiding parents.
- 1:07So you can get to know us a little bit
- 1:08and the framework that we apply to parenting.
- 1:11Then in future episodes,
- 1:13we'll be all about navigating those parenting moments
- 1:16that we all share with practical tools
- 1:18that allow us to parent with greater ease, peace, and joy.
- 1:22So mom, can you tell us what brought you
- 1:24to this moment of starting a podcast?
- 1:27Oh, I've been working with children and families forever
- 1:30for most of my life, 40 plus years.
- 1:33And I am absolutely passionate
- 1:34about making a difference for children and families.
- 1:37I truly do believe that each child
- 1:38is just this amazing little being
- 1:41with unlimited potential and possibility.
- 1:43And I just think how different we would all be,
- 1:46how different our world would be
- 1:48if we grew up with our needs met,
- 1:50able to be our full selves,
- 1:51and fulfill that vast potential
- 1:53that we all come into the world with.
- 1:55And so that's what I want for our kids.
- 1:57You know, I've wanted to work with kids
- 1:58as long as I can remember,
- 2:00you know, start a school someday.
- 2:02Except for that brief little time
- 2:04when I was gonna be a ballerina.
- 2:05But other than that, you know, that's been my dream.
- 2:08And I grew up a Montessori child.
- 2:10My dad was an educator
- 2:12and he was actually the administrator
- 2:14of the Montessori school that I went to.
- 2:17And so then later when I went to college,
- 2:20I got reintroduced to Montessori
- 2:21and the instructor in those courses is just my mentor.
- 2:25She was incredible and she is really the one
- 2:27that just passed that flame, so to speak.
- 2:30So, you know, I was taking her classes
- 2:32and, you know, this was it.
- 2:34You know, this was the direction I was gonna go.
- 2:37And then I got my first job and I got fired.
- 2:41So I was devastated.
- 2:43It's like, oh my God, you know,
- 2:44this is what I'm supposed to do.
- 2:46And I, you know, I got fired.
- 2:48And thankfully for Nancy,
- 2:50she, you know, she was like, nope, that's not the issue.
- 2:54So the reason I got fired was because we had
- 2:57a little spicy boy who just, you know,
- 3:00didn't do what he was supposed to
- 3:02and was kind of the problem child.
- 3:05So they took me and a couple other of the adults
- 3:08into this small little room
- 3:09and I was supposed to talk to this child.
- 3:12So I got down on his level and I talked to him.
- 3:17And instead of doing what they expected of me,
- 3:21I failed to make him understand that I was the boss
- 3:24and, you know, be very clear on how he was to behave
- 3:27and who was the boss here.
- 3:29And so they fired me.
- 3:31But it also was one of my very first experiences
- 3:34was seeing that the way we've been raising
- 3:36and educating our kids, it isn't ideal.
- 3:39It's not, you know, that's how so many of us were raised.
- 3:43How so many of us see parenting is, you know,
- 3:45we've got to let kids know we're the boss
- 3:47and this is, they need to do what they're told.
- 3:50But, you know, in this situation,
- 3:52nobody was trying to understand the child.
- 3:54Nobody was trying to figure out what's going on with him.
- 3:57Instead it was just make sure he knows who's boss.
- 4:00So luckily Nancy was there
- 4:02and she actually hired me to work at her school.
- 4:04And which was an amazing experience
- 4:06and I went on to work at other schools.
- 4:09And then you came along Shannon
- 4:11and, you know, still I had this dream
- 4:14that I was gonna have this school
- 4:16but now I had to balance, okay,
- 4:18now I've got this little person,
- 4:19so how am I gonna be a mom?
- 4:21And launch this dream at the same time.
- 4:24But it all came together and I started Child's View
- 4:27where I was the administrator and everything else,
- 4:31teacher, janitor, you know, bottle washer,
- 4:34all the things for 24 years,
- 4:37working with children and families.
- 4:39And along the way, you know,
- 4:41your little brother came along
- 4:42and, you know, I felt like you guys
- 4:44were pretty much raised at the school.
- 4:46We kind of almost lived there.
- 4:48Then, you know, along the way I became a single mom
- 4:51and so that was a whole nother experience.
- 4:54And I remarried, got two more wonderful kids
- 4:57out of the deal.
- 4:58But now I was navigating co-parenting
- 5:00and was able to see the perspective
- 5:03of both the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent.
- 5:06And so that's, you know, that was a very eye-opening
- 5:09and helps to really consider with empathy
- 5:13what we're all going through in those kind of situations.
- 5:18But, you know, all the way along we had the school
- 5:20and it was really cool because
- 5:24all of the kids worked at the school
- 5:27at some time or another.
- 5:28They either went to the school
- 5:29or they worked at the school in some way.
- 5:32And one of my very favorite times
- 5:35was when the summer when you were finally old enough
- 5:38to be a true assistant.
- 5:40And so you were my assistant
- 5:42and we had your brother as our,
- 5:44he wasn't old enough,
- 5:45but he was too old for the summer elementary program.
- 5:47So he was our aid or, you know,
- 5:50he thought of it more as he was the gopher.
- 5:54So I got to work this whole summer with the two of you
- 5:58and it was just so amazing.
- 6:01And, you know, you were like the best assistant
- 6:03that I ever had in all of that time.
- 6:07But anyway, since finally the time came
- 6:10for me to leave Child's View
- 6:11and since leaving Child's View
- 6:13I've been teaching early childhood education
- 6:15and parenting courses at a local community college
- 6:17and facilitating courses and workshops
- 6:20for both parents and educators,
- 6:22as well as consulting and doing some parent coaching.
- 6:27Started the Guiding Mindset to support parents
- 6:30as well as a sister site for educators
- 6:33called Educating the Essence.
- 6:35Now I'm also working on the Guiding Parent book
- 6:38that will be out soon.
- 6:40And so now here we are
- 6:41and I'm so excited that we're launching
- 6:43this podcast together.
- 6:46So I know you're excited about this too.
- 6:49What brings you to this moment?
- 6:51So, I mean, obviously you just said like
- 6:53this has been your philosophy since before I existed.
- 6:57And so I kind of joke,
- 6:58like I got the beta version of the Guiding Mindset
- 7:02before it had a name, before it was fully fleshed out.
- 7:09And so, yeah, being parented this way
- 7:10makes me really passionate
- 7:11about making sure that other parents are aware
- 7:15of this kind of a parenting philosophy.
- 7:17This is how I parent my own child.
- 7:20And I'm able to see just kind of the difference
- 7:22in my parenting peers
- 7:25and how sometimes they're meeting challenges
- 7:28or struggling and seeing if they just had
- 7:31a little bit more information,
- 7:33the difference that it could potentially make.
- 7:38But I still have times where I have to call my mommy
- 7:42and mom, walk me through this.
- 7:45How do I better handle this particular scenario?
- 7:49And so, yeah, I mean, we literally have these conversations
- 7:52weekly, if not more frequently.
- 7:54And so it feels like the podcast
- 7:56is just sort of an extension of these conversations
- 7:59that we're already having
- 8:00as I navigate my own parenting journey.
- 8:04And to me, it's really important that,
- 8:06again, my parenting peers have access to information
- 8:10that can really help ease their process of being a parent
- 8:16and just their family culture and all of that
- 8:19can be a little bit more easeful.
- 8:22And I want my kid to grow up with peers
- 8:24that are well-adjusted
- 8:26and have had positive parenting.
- 8:30And I love my mom.
- 8:31So I'm here to support her.
- 8:34And I love that we get to do this together.
- 8:38Me too.
- 8:39I'm really excited.
- 8:40You mentioned having greater ease
- 8:43and that's really something that
- 8:45the guiding mindset is all about.
- 8:47That's kind of our thing is that
- 8:49you'll be able to parent with greater ease, peace and joy.
- 8:52I think it's really important that we differentiate
- 8:54between ease and easy.
- 8:57I mean, parenting is hard.
- 8:59It's not easy.
- 9:00So ease doesn't mean that,
- 9:02all of a sudden it's gonna be easy peasy
- 9:05and no more challenges or troubles.
- 9:07It means you'll just have a whole lot less flailing around
- 9:10wondering what the heck do I do now
- 9:12or going down the wrong direction
- 9:15that just causes you more difficulty
- 9:16and more stress and angst.
- 9:19So thinking about those other pieces,
- 9:22we have ease, peace and joy.
- 9:23Having that peace just reflects
- 9:25that we're gonna have a sense of calm,
- 9:27less struggle, less conflict,
- 9:29as well as that's also something that's possible
- 9:32for ourselves in our world
- 9:33is to have a more peaceful feeling.
- 9:37I believe when kids have this ability
- 9:40to be raised in this way.
- 9:42And I really want to see so much joy
- 9:46being brought to parents
- 9:47so that we're actually enjoying our children
- 9:49and enjoying our lives together.
- 9:51So the difference really is that it's not necessarily easy,
- 9:57but we know what to do.
- 9:59And so we still have those challenges,
- 10:01but we can work through them
- 10:03with intention and with confidence.
- 10:07I feel like, yeah, you can totally love your child.
- 10:09You can love parenting and still be exhausted by it,
- 10:14still find it challenging.
- 10:16There's obviously, I think for every parent,
- 10:18there's times of the day,
- 10:19there's different things that you just don't love.
- 10:21I know for me, like don't love bedtime transition,
- 10:25but that one has been one that,
- 10:27for my kids entire life has been a dicey part of our day.
- 10:31And so we're hoping that we can help you move
- 10:35from dreading those kinds of times
- 10:38of your parenting journey
- 10:40into just having them be another part of your day.
- 10:42Maybe it never becomes your favorite part of the day,
- 10:45but it's not something that you have to dread anymore.
- 10:48Right, absolutely.
- 10:50Yeah, I feel like also, our world has changed so much
- 10:54and we need to change with it.
- 10:57So many of us were parented
- 11:00with kind of this old way of thinking
- 11:01and those ideals just really don't work anymore
- 11:05in today's world.
- 11:06Or we didn't like how we were parented,
- 11:09so we've gone in exactly the opposite direction,
- 11:11which hasn't worked either.
- 11:13So we really need a different type of mindset.
- 11:16So this just gives us the opportunity to have conversations
- 11:19so we can better understand what our kids need.
- 11:22So they'll be successful in today's world.
- 11:25And that also, how we can deal
- 11:27with today's parenting challenges
- 11:29with practical strategies and tools.
- 11:33As we change and nurture and guide our kids,
- 11:35we change what's possible for them,
- 11:38for ourselves and ultimately the world.
- 11:41So it takes a village
- 11:42and we just really wanna be a part of your village.
- 11:46We're really lucky my mom has this amazing experience
- 11:50and expertise on early childhood
- 11:52and family structures and all of that.
- 11:56For this entirety of her career,
- 11:58I really feel like she's been advocating for kids
- 12:00and what they need and creating circumstances
- 12:04for the best amount of their development
- 12:09to ensure that they really can become
- 12:10the best versions of themselves.
- 12:12She's got four kiddos included and now two grandbabies.
- 12:18Who aren't really babies anymore.
- 12:20That's true.
- 12:21Yes.
- 12:22You know, and you've been living this, you know,
- 12:25but the thing about it is you're right there in the trenches.
- 12:28You know, you're living and breathing this
- 12:29every single day.
- 12:30So, you know, you bring those real challenges
- 12:33that parents are experiencing every day.
- 12:37So we get to work through them together
- 12:39and together we'll find solutions
- 12:41that fits everybody involved.
- 12:45The child, the family, and the child and the parents
- 12:48and the family as a whole.
- 12:49So that everybody's needs are met.
- 12:51And, you know, it's not just about how do we make,
- 12:55you know, do things for our child
- 12:56or not thinking about them and just doing what parents want,
- 13:01but really making a nice cohesive way that, you know,
- 13:05where the whole family is supported
- 13:06and is having their needs met.
- 13:10So next episode, we're going to dig briefly
- 13:13into what those guiding mindset principles are.
- 13:16And then you'll have those to kind of,
- 13:18as kind of a reference.
- 13:19And then all the upcoming episodes,
- 13:21we're going to dig right into the issues
- 13:23and challenges that we all deal with.
- 13:26So we hope you'll join our village
- 13:28and join the conversation.
- 13:30Let us know what you want to talk about,
- 13:33because, you know, we want to talk about
- 13:35what you want to hear and what those difficulties are
- 13:37that you're experiencing.
- 13:39So give us your parenting challenges
- 13:42and you'll find all the links in the show notes
- 13:44to follow along and subscribe.
- 13:47We'll see you next episode.
