- 0:34We know about 40% of you guys don't, and let's just get
- 0:38straight into it. So the first story that I have
- 0:41for you guys today is I'm going to break down the discourse that
- 0:45has been going on the past month on TikTok around unfollowing
- 0:49influencers, when they become mothers, when they fall
- 0:52pregnant, when they become engaged, basically when they
- 0:56announce like big life milestones that are around
- 0:59relationships and babies. So at the beginning of February,
- 1:02a creator named Shan made a video that went super viral in
- 1:06which she said that the second a creator starts posting wedding
- 1:08content or pregnancy content, she unfollows them.
- 1:11Now Shan has deleted her video but I will play a clip of it
- 1:15from a stitch that I found. No shade and no disrespect, but
- 1:18the second I see a chick start posting wedding content, bride
- 1:21content, Bachelorette content, baby content, pregnancy content.
- 1:24I bow out. This video sparked immense
- 1:26backlash and it's still ongoing. And now several influencers have
- 1:30been dragged into the conversation, namely Madeline
- 1:33White and most of all, Whitney Simmons.
- 1:36For context, Madeline White is a fashion and lifestyle influencer
- 1:39who married 1/2 of the DJ group Loud Luxury, and she recently
- 1:43announced that she's pregnant with their first child, a baby
- 1:45girl. And Whitney Simmons is a super
- 1:47popular fitness creator who announced that she's pregnant
- 1:50with her first child about 20 weeks ago.
- 1:51So she's been pregnant publicly on social media for a while now.
- 1:55Both Madeline and Whitney share about their pregnancies in
- 1:57different ways. Madeline is very chatting to the
- 2:00camera in her content and she shares a lot about her life.
- 2:03So naturally pregnancy and like planning for this baby, that
- 2:06comes up a lot in her content. Whitney, on the other hand, she
- 2:09shares more like structured fitness content.
- 2:12But obviously she's pregnant. So she looks different in the
- 2:14content and the workouts that she can do and show us on camera
- 2:18are inevitably different as she progresses in her pregnancy.
- 2:22And she's also creating a lot of content, of course, now around
- 2:24like working out for pregnancy. So let me play you a few clips
- 2:29of the discourse to give you some idea about what's going on.
- 2:32Unfollowing people when they get pregnant.
- 2:33Okay, first there was this girl who made a video saying I
- 2:36unfollow everybody who gets pregnant or gets married or
- 2:38whatever. And people were like, okay.
- 2:41And then now people are unfollowing Whitney Simmons
- 2:43because she's pregnant. Okay, like let's talk about
- 2:45this, right? Because if you are unfollowing a
- 2:48woman simply because she was pregnant, simply because she is
- 2:54engaged, her content is staying the same, right?
- 2:56Her content is staying the same exactly as she was posted.
- 2:58But now she's just, this thing is happening to her, right?
- 3:01Like she is pregnant whatever. I do think that is internalized
- 3:05misogyny talking that is anti women.
- 3:07People are upset at Whitney Simmons for being pregnant.
- 3:10The problem came from the comment section, because in that
- 3:13comment section there were hundreds of people saying that
- 3:17they felt this way about Whitney Simmons.
- 3:20People are upset. They are calling her selfish.
- 3:22They're saying that why would anyone want to bring a baby into
- 3:25this world and that you shouldn't be having babies
- 3:28anymore. We shouldn't be putting down a
- 3:29woman who is in a healthy marriage who is more than
- 3:34capable of providing for this child financially.
- 3:37I would like to talk about unfollowing pregnant women on
- 3:39social media because, as usual, I fear we are missing the point
- 3:42of it. For context, over the past few
- 3:44days I I've seen several videos on my FYP about the phenomenon
- 3:48of women getting unfollowed when they share about their pregnancy
- 3:51and basically that this is a misogynist or woman hating thing
- 3:55to do. I want to say first and foremost
- 3:57that there is a massive difference between someone you
- 3:59follow on social media because you know them and someone you
- 4:01follow for a specific type of content that they create.
- 4:04As I said, I am child free but most of the women in my actual
- 4:06life have children and I love their children.
- 4:08I love children generally and several of them actually have
- 4:11like dedicated newsletters strictly about motherhood and I
- 4:14subscribe to and read those newsletters mostly to support
- 4:16them, but also because like they're in my life and their
- 4:19child is a big part of that life.
- 4:21When someone is following a content creator strictly as an
- 4:24audience member for some type of content they create, be that
- 4:27cooking or fashion or personal finance or whatever.
- 4:29Like not only do they not owe them a fucking thing, they're
- 4:32just literally following them on social media.
- 4:34They don't know them, but also be like they're following them
- 4:37for that content. And often, not always, but
- 4:40often, when a woman becomes a mother, in addition to being a
- 4:43large content creator, her content becomes significantly
- 4:47about motherhood, parenting her kids, et cetera.
- 4:50If you look at the data, women posting about marriage, babies,
- 4:54family life, et cetera, that shit works with audiences.
- 4:58OK, so there will obviously be creators who will make
- 5:01pregnancy, motherhood, being married, whatever, more central
- 5:05to their content than others. An example, just like off the
- 5:08top of my head, of a creator whose content and vibe
- 5:11essentially didn't change at all was Lauren Simpson.
- 5:14She's a fitness influencer. And when she had her first baby,
- 5:17she didn't really change her content at all to the point
- 5:20where it was really easy to forget that she was pregnant,
- 5:23that she had a baby. Like, it just didn't remain
- 5:25central to her content. She shares her kid, you know,
- 5:27like she shares these things here and there, but it didn't
- 5:30become her entire profile. It didn't seemingly take over
- 5:34her identity online, but who's to say which is right or wrong
- 5:37in terms of how you're approaching your content in real
- 5:40life? We don't expect people to show
- 5:42up exactly the same as they always have through different
- 5:45phases of life, so I don't think we should expect that from
- 5:48influencers or creators online. I do want to say too, in this
- 5:52conversation, the fathers are not a part of this conversation
- 5:57basically at all. And I do believe that's because
- 5:59when you become a mother, it's probably, I mean, I'm not a
- 6:02mother, but I imagine it is so transformative at like a
- 6:05cellular level from the moment you find out you're pregnant.
- 6:09So naturally your content will change because all of a sudden
- 6:12your life has changed. And I also think it's probably
- 6:15because we allow men to have identities outside of being
- 6:18fathers, including outside of being newborn fathers, because I
- 6:23know we talk a lot about how women, you know, they lose
- 6:26themselves in motherhood. And I'm sure there are some who
- 6:28do. From my perspective, I see it
- 6:30more when it's the earlier stages of having kids.
- 6:35And so when a woman has a child and especially has a newborn
- 6:38baby, a newborn child, it feels essentially impossible to
- 6:42separate her from that new experience that she's going
- 6:45through, even as somebody who's on the outside, right?
- 6:48And I'm sure that mothers to newborn babies feel that way
- 6:51tenfold. And I'm not saying that's like
- 6:53right or wrong. I think it's just kind of the
- 6:55reality of how we view motherhood versus how we view
- 6:58fatherhood. Now, where I land on this, I
- 7:00think I do understand why some people are uninterested in this
- 7:04type of content. And it also may be sensitive
- 7:07content for people, right? We have no idea why people may
- 7:10not want to see content related to pregnancy, fertility,
- 7:14motherhood. That could be really sensitive
- 7:16for people. I don't think that influencers
- 7:18should take it personally if people unfollow them and don't
- 7:21want to see this content. I know Madeline White has been
- 7:24pretty vocal and almost like defensive about the fact that
- 7:26people are unfollowing her and saying they don't want to see
- 7:28her motherhood content or her pregnancy content.
- 7:31And she seems to not really understand why.
- 7:33And I don't think that that's the right approach.
- 7:36Like there's a variety of reasons why somebody might not
- 7:38be interested in that content. It could be sensitive to them or
- 7:41they might just not be interested in having kids.
- 7:44So kid related content is not interesting to them, especially
- 7:47if they don't know the kid and they don't know you.
- 7:49Plus influencers who do document things like pregnancy and
- 7:52motherhood, they will find new followers through that content.
- 7:56So I don't think influencers should be upset about this.
- 7:58I don't think they should necessarily take offense to it.
- 8:01But I also think from our perspective we should probably
- 8:04just be on following and moving on.
- 8:07Not everything needs to be a thing piece.
- 8:10Not everything needs to be a hot take.
- 8:11I think some opinions can stay as inside thoughts, especially
- 8:15when it comes to something as nuanced as fertility, pregnancy,
- 8:19motherhood. That opinion can't just be
- 8:22reduced to like a 42nd video of a hot take.
- 8:24I read a comment that said it's weird to judge a creator for
- 8:27getting pregnant as if they have failed you in some way.
- 8:31And I think that's unfortunately what this conversation has
- 8:34become. And I'm not saying that there's
- 8:35not meaningful discourse that could be had around this topic
- 8:39because it's interesting. It's a very interesting topic.
- 8:42That's why it's been going on for the past month.
- 8:43That's why people are still making new content about this
- 8:46and why it went so viral, because it is an interesting
- 8:49topic. And Shan's original video did
- 8:52spark intelligent debate in some ways, but I think it also has
- 8:56sparked debate that has caused some harm.
- 8:58But I'm interested to hear where you guys land on this, if your
- 9:00parents, if you're not not parents, how you feel about that
- 9:02type of content. I feel very neutral.
- 9:05I don't unfollow influencers or creators when they get pregnant.
- 9:09I don't necessarily like care about their content, but I don't
- 9:13not care if that makes sense. I'm just following them for the
- 9:15ride. I'm like, I'm following you for
- 9:17your life because I'm parasocial with you or whatever, and this
- 9:20is like another stage of your life.
- 9:21All right, the next story that I have for you guys today we are
- 9:24back talking about Rosanna Pansino and Mr. Beast.
- 9:28Please forgive me. I have said this before, but
- 9:31sometimes the problem with doing a daily podcast is stories or
- 9:35topics can feel repetitive because there is something
- 9:38that's specifically like in the news all the time or going viral
- 9:41at this moment, like somebody or some topic, right?
- 9:43So Mr. Beast and Rosanna Pansino specifically were those people
- 9:49for like months and months and months, maybe like a year ago.
- 9:53I feel like every single week, multiple times a week.
- 9:56I was talking about them and it got so tired.
- 9:59But it's been a while, so we're back.
- 10:01OK, So Rosanna Pansino is calling out Mr. Beast for
- 10:05allegedly buying his views or at least some of his views.
- 10:09So it all began on March 1st when Jeff Holzenbold, who's the
- 10:12CEO of Beast Industries, shared figures claiming Mr. Beast's
- 10:15content reached 1.45 billion unique viewers over a recent 90
- 10:21day period. So Rosanna responded to this on
- 10:24X. She questioned whether those
- 10:26figures were transparent, pointing out that Mister Beast
- 10:29ran his long form and his short form videos as ads 428 times
- 10:34last year alone, and that his long form views are actually
- 10:38down by 50% compared to the year prior despite the paid
- 10:41promotion. She continued.
- 10:42I'm not accusing him. It is a fact based on data.
- 10:46He is using YouTube's promote feature where you put in money
- 10:49and you get views slash Subs. This is how you buy views on
- 10:52YouTube following their rules. OK so neither Mr. Beast nor Jeff
- 10:55have responded as we know this is part of like a long running
- 10:59feud I would say between them. But it's really more like
- 11:02Rosanna going after Mr. Beast and like, power to her.
- 11:05OK, but it dates back to 2023 when she was like a contestant
- 11:09on one of his shows and she started calling him out very
- 11:12publicly for basically the production behind the scenes
- 11:16being rigged. And then that just kind of
- 11:18snowballed. I have a million episodes that
- 11:20cover all of the back and forth, so go back and listen to some of
- 11:24those if you're confused. But I find this whole thing
- 11:26really interesting from the perspective of a media brand
- 11:29owner because in media, for example, at least in Australia,
- 11:32there's actually very little distinction made between views
- 11:35or reach that are boosted and views and reach that is organic.
- 11:40And that was a surprise to me when I started Centennial and
- 11:42when we started working with like media budgets and media
- 11:45agencies instead of working with smaller like content in house
- 11:50budget. So initially we started more so
- 11:52on that like content side of things where brands would give
- 11:54us a little bit of money here and there from their content
- 11:57budgets or even sometimes their influencer budgets.
- 11:59And then, you know, we kind of graduated as our brand grew and
- 12:02we got more recognition into being eligible for media
- 12:05budgets, which are bigger budgets budgets and part of
- 12:07usually like bigger ad buying and media buying campaigns.
- 12:11And something that surprised me when we entered that world was
- 12:14that these larger scale campaigns, the brands will
- 12:16actually allocate specific budget for boosting for your
- 12:20content too. So in the case of Mr. Beast, I
- 12:23don't think this is necessarily true.
- 12:24But in the case of Mr. Beast, for example, what it could have
- 12:27been is some of those videos could have been sponsored and
- 12:30the brands that sponsored those videos, let's say, gave him an
- 12:33extra like $10,000 to specifically put behind the
- 12:37promotion of those videos. And that is like a very
- 12:40transparent exchange between the media company or the influencer
- 12:44and the brand. So the distinction between
- 12:47organic traffic versus traffic that you've paid for, it's not
- 12:50as important in this industry as you might think, at least like I
- 12:54said here in Australia and even media brands in general, Like
- 12:57when we were moreofa.com, I found it shocking when people
- 13:00would ask us about our site traffic and they would be like,
- 13:03did you buy this? Like is this mostly bought or is
- 13:06this organic? And we would be like, I didn't
- 13:07even know you could buy site traffic.
- 13:09Like we were just so naive and like so green.
- 13:12But you know, like our traffic was organic and say now like we
- 13:15don't have the money to be like boosting everything, obviously.
- 13:18But yeah, it's it's similar, I suppose if you're in a different
- 13:20industry, like if you're in a consumer goods industry and you
- 13:23think about your customer acquisition cost, you're
- 13:25spending on Meta, YouTube, TikTok, other avenues to
- 13:29generate leads, how much it cost for you to generate that lead
- 13:32and thus convert them to a customer.
- 13:34It's kind of the same thing in media.
- 13:36That's like our version boosting and stuff is like our version of
- 13:39lead generation where it's like the viewer may convert to an
- 13:43audience member. So I don't know if Rosanna's
- 13:46questions on X are necessarily the right ones, but I think she
- 13:50should be asking is OK, let's look at where those views are
- 13:54specifically coming from. How long?
- 13:56Like what's the retention rate? Like how long are people
- 13:58watching these videos, these like viewers that you have quote
- 14:01UN quote bought? Like how long are they watching
- 14:04the video for? Because, you know, are they real
- 14:06views? Are these real people that have
- 14:08been promoted to or I don't know.
- 14:11There's always speculation that's possible.
- 14:12These platforms just put the numbers up and it's not actually
- 14:16a real view. Like what's the watch time like?
- 14:17There's other metrics I feel like that she could have.
- 14:20I know that this was not like an actual like Inquisition, but I
- 14:22feel like there's other questions and metrics that she
- 14:25could have put out there that would have maybe made a little
- 14:28bit more sense. OK.
- 14:29And the last story that I have for you guys today is there is
- 14:32some TikTok fashion girly beef in the comments section.
- 14:36This is a short one, but a creator named Alina AI AI.
- 14:41Oh my God, I am brain rotted. I read her last name was capital
- 14:45A lowercase I and I read it as AI instead of AI think is
- 14:49probably how you pronounce it. But like my brain literally just
- 14:51said AI. OK, Elena posted a video last
- 14:55week on TikTok in this frilly white Coachella inspired outfit
- 14:59with the caption when she tries to copy my style but doesn't
- 15:03know this will cause bankruptcy. OK, so like a sassy little video
- 15:07and the video has now gone so viral because of this mild beef
- 15:11in the comments section. So a user who calls herself the
- 15:14thrift store girl who has like 700,000 followers by the way,
- 15:17like she is a really big creator.
- 15:19She commented. Unfortunately, I'm the thrift
- 15:22God. I can replicate your outfit
- 15:24after two weeks at the bins. I fear this comment specifically
- 15:27has over 657,000 likes right now.
- 15:32Elena responded Isabel Morant isn't at the bins, I fear.
- 15:36And then a day later, Thrift Store Girl commented a photo of
- 15:39an Isabel Morant tag on a thrifted shirt and wrote, it is,
- 15:43I fear so clapping back. And then Alina responded a twal
- 15:49because I guess Isabel Morant has a more affordable casual
- 15:52brand called Isabel Morant A twal, which is what the tag
- 15:55said. It said Isabel Morant A twal.
- 15:57And then the thrift store girl responded.
- 15:59The point is, your style is inspired by vintage bohemian
- 16:02fashion. Regardless, it's easily
- 16:04accessible if you have thrifting skills.
- 16:06Just because you spend racks on a name brand shirt doesn't
- 16:09differentiate you from the rest of the fashion girlies Savage.
- 16:13And then she posted her own video showing that the blouse
- 16:17Elena had posted in her original video is actually isel morant a
- 16:22dwell collection. So now this is of course turned
- 16:26into like a whole meme. So people are memeing the
- 16:28comment first the at the bins. I fear part of it.
- 16:32And then people are also making their own versions when they're
- 16:35thrifting, posting videos being like wonder if I'll find Isel
- 16:39Morant at the bins. All right, guys.
- 16:41Well, that's it for mini today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 16:44I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 16:47and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
