- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Well, the wait is finally over from High Street to the banks of the Ohio River up to the shores of Lake Erie.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Scarlet, Orange, and Brown podcast.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: And I'm Chris Huseman.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: And today we are unleashing our ultimate Ohio gridiron preview.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: We're talking about Ryan Day's championship mandate, Joe Burrow's protection plan, and the absolute beautiful chaos brewing in Cleveland, Kenny.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Well, no homers, no holding back.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Turn the volume up, Ohio.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It's the SOB podcast starting right now.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And I gotta ask you, how was your offseason, Chris?
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Uh it was really good.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Um being retired is uh all that it's cracked up to be.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Uh a lot of golf.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: And um I tell you what, just a great, great summer overall, and uh can't complain one bit.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: How about you, Kenny?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, not too bad.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Trying to stay busy, and uh this is the time of the year with uh the podcast that we we get a little busy and uh try to put uh put together some some info for our listeners and uh hopefully they'll be entertained and uh who knows, maybe they'll be able to take some of our picks and uh maybe even play some bets and uh see how close we are with it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Well, we got some good ones picked up, Kenny.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I'm excited.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Well, let's start off like we always do with uh the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: They uh you know had a nice run last year, kind of came up a little bit short.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: But um I guess the big question this year is that stands out in my mind is how many players they lost and what they have returning and who did they pick up in the transfer portal.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And what are your thoughts on that?
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, that that's a great point.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Um, they're the absolute gauntlet of a schedule that they have this year.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the the the offseason debates are finally really over, in my opinion.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And the path to the championship begins now for Ryan Day, Coach Patricia.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Um, this year's squad looks elite, um, highly experienced, at least on the offensive end.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Um the defense is completely retooled this year, uh, looking to prove that it can maintain that best in America standard, I guess.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I'm just excited to see the offense.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, eight returning starters uh on offense this year.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Kenny, to me, they're they're they're providing that level of continuity that's incredibly rare today in college football.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: And, you know, with everybody jumping ship uh with the transfers and transfer portal and whatnot.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I expect Julian Sand to be in the Heisman race again.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Um he's back for a second year as undisputed QB1.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Uh he's armed with that extra year of knowledge that's so crucial.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And I think he has full command and autonomy of the line of scrimmage this year.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, you talk about running backs.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Bo Jackson, you know, took over in the backfield as a freshman uh late last year.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Um he's definitely uh RB1.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Uh a kid that I loved last year was that Isaiah West.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Um and another weapon that they have is Legend Bay.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Um, this kid is just, I mean, I think they got a bunch of packages for him as well.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Jeremiah Smith speaks for himself.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Um, he's already a household name, in my opinion, uh, potential record breaker.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Um, Brandon Ennis uh is holding down that slot spot for now.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I think he's going to be a very good one.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: What I'm excited about, Kenny, is something that we, you know, really have been really critical on this podcast on the SOB, and that's our offensive line.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Those big men up front.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the four returning starters are anchoring that line.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, you got Carson Hensman, who's the center, you've got Austin uh Syravel moving to right guard this year, uh, Luke Montgomery at left guard and Philip Daniels at right tackle.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And then they've even put a young guy in there.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Ian Moore has won the left tackle spot.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And um one of the one of the outliers that I'm really concerned about too is our tight end this year.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Um you know, it's scheduled to be Nate Roberts, so hopefully he'll come in and do a great job.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Um, but um, you know, these wide receivers, Kenny, uh Devin McCuin.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Um, this guy is a Texas San Antonio transfer.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you heard about this kid, but he's got major speed.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a Z receiver in a vacancy left by Carnell Tate.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Um, and another guy um that I'm really excited about too is Connor Hawkins, the kicker, uh, the transfer in.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And um, I think our kicking game is gonna be lights out this year, too, as well.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, and that's not even mentioning guys uh like Chris Henry Jr., Kenny.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, hyper talented freshman whiteout, um, expected to make an immediate impact uh in the rotation.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I'm excited to see offensively.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, I agree with you.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: The offense is is loaded, and you know, you got to consider that the Buckeyes lost, I believe, eight in the draft, and four of them were first rounders.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And they they come back with guys that are gonna be really exciting to watch.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: And the the defensive backs and the linebackers are going to be uh they're gonna have to step it up big time because we lost a lot of really good players to the draft in graduation.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And you know, on the offensive side of the ball, you've got to be unbelievably excited if you're uh McEwen or if you're Chris Henry, and another guy that's surprised a lot of people is Brock Boyd because everybody's gonna focus on Jeremiah Smith.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm just hoping that Arthur Smith is coming up with some new ways to make sure he gets his hands on the ball because he's the best receiver in the country, hands down, and he's going to be critical.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And like you said, the running game is going to be solid.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: We got we got plenty of guys to run, and Julian Smith, he gets the protection he we think he's going to get.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: He led the nation in accuracy last year.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I can't imagine what he's going to be like this year.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, the thing that really jumps out to me when you when you look at everything, everybody I talk to here saying, you know, they wouldn't be surprised if the Buckeyes lost two games.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And the part of the schedule that jumps out to me the most, obviously you play Texas at game two, but that October 17th to November 7th stretch, Indiana away, USC away, and Oregon at home.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: That's going to decide a lot for the Buckeyes in the Big Ten race.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I totally agree.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And and I don't think we're going to have a problem putting up points, to be honest with you.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And, you know, to me, I think our defense is um, you know, in that kind of um, you know, with the schedule that you just mentioned, we're in that figure things out phase.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: And you know, you mentioned Julian Zayan, and I just think, you know, this I mean this guy has Nick Saban's stamp of approval.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, I just saw Chip Kelly uh the other day.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, he believes the Buckeyes are gonna run it and and win the national championship.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, that week two test at Texas, um, yeah, it's gonna be crucial, but it's not gonna be the end-all to end all.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think we're gonna finish some things there.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And yeah, you know, going to USC is never never a fun thing to do.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Playing Oregon's never a fun thing to do, but we got them at home.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Um, but I just wanted to mention the defense.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I'm looking at Kenyatta Jackson and Bo Atkinson, our ends.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, we got two brick houses in the middle, Edric Houston and John Walker, big John Walker.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Um Peyton Pierce is an interesting um candidate for me at middle linebacker with Christian uh Allegro.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: This guy is the transfer Kenny from Wisconsin.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: So he's battle tested and he knows uh Big Ten football, and I think he is just going to be exactly what we've been clamoring for, especially last season on the SOB.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Um, but the thing that really I'm encouraged about are the plethora of defensive backs that we have that are just outstanding, Kenny.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Jermaine Matthews Jr., you got Devin Sanchez, Jalen McLean, Earl Little Jr., watch out for this kid.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: And then a true freshman is going to be starting.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Jay Timmons also in the backfield and the nickel.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And I'm just excited to watch these guys play and see what they come up with.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I the the big shoes to fill on the defensive end is obviously going to be the two linebackers with Arvell Reese and uh Sonny Styles.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: But from everything that's coming out of camp, they say Peyton, uh Pierce and Allegro are are you know ready to step up and take over.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So you know you give Matt Patricia another year of calling defense back there.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: And what are your thoughts on Arthur Smith?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: He was an NFL guy, but uh I think it's gonna be make it even more challenging for coaches because they have no idea you know what what he's gonna bring to the college game.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, you just look at it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, Matt Patricia's our defensive coordinator.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's what 51 years old, and you know, this guy was an NFL head coach, and here he is, you know, entering what his third season at Ohio State.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, it's just fabulous what he's done uh here.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: He loves Columbus.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Um, but Arthur Smith brings that NFL type uh wide receivers.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: That's why High State's been known, Kenny, as wide receiver U and lately.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: And I mean you just look at Olave and Jigba and you know all the all the all the wide receivers that are in the NFL, and it's just you know, uh High Estate's just dotted all over the NFL.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think he's gonna do a fabulous job.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: He brings um, you know, if anybody can replace what we had at wide receiver coach, um, I think it's gonna be Arthur Smith.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Well, let me ask you this.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Big ten predictions.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, this is my top four.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, to me, I think you got to throw Oregon in there.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Um, I think um you gotta throw Indiana in there, um, Ohio State, obviously.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Um that's three, and I think there's gonna be, you know, one that comes out of nowhere.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, could that be USC, you know, could it be Michigan?
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, who knows?
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, just a lot of there's a lot of variables that those guys uh bring, but you know, to me, those four right there are the class of what I feel was the best conference uh in in in the nation right now.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I agree with you with uh Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon, and that fourth slot, I I just was going through the schedules, and Penn State literally does not play Indiana, Oregon, or Ohio State.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Great call.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: They're in a situation where their schedule is very favorable, and they could be a team that could even sneak into that that uh 12-team playoff at the end of the season just based on the fact that their their schedule is very accommodating.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Well, the if you had to pick right now, who's your Big Ten champion?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um right now, um, I you know, honestly, I have to say it's just the Julian Saiyan factor.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: If our defense um plays half to three quarters as good as I think they can, then you know, you got to think that all the weapons that we have offensively and just his prowess behind center being QB1.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: I just don't see any other quarterbacks in the Big Ten with those types of weapons, that type of line that we have.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And to me, Ohio State will be the class of the Big Ten this year.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go ahead and agree with you, and I I hope that Ryan Day takes the approach that that uh Signetti did at Indiana and just boat race every team that you get out there with and just put points up constantly.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: I think that's that's how Indiana did it, and they're like, sorry, beat us.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: You know, that's that's just how we're gonna be.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: So I I think I I'll agree with you on that.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: I think Ohio State's got the the best opportunity, and when it comes time for the playoffs, it ain't gonna be like last year.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: They're gonna be battle tested without a doubt.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, Kenny, you you mentioned something there, Indiana, and you know, just to me on the outside looking in, and I think Kurt Cignati's a great coach.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Um, I really do.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And um the thing that he did is he went out and got veteran transfer porter guys.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, he brought a lot of those guys with him uh when he transferred from James Madison, and you know, they were they were leaders, they knew his system.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Now those guys are gone.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I mean the joke going around the Big Ten and in Big Ten Country was you know, those guys were 24, 20, 25 years old.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And that's fine.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're playing within the rules, and that's fine.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, but I think they're getting out of that now.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: I think um they got a lot more pieces.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Fernando Mendoza's gone.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, there's a lot more movable pieces there, and there's not a lot of margin for error.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Um, is Indiana gonna be good?
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I just I just think they've lost a lot of variables there.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And you know, the thing is with that game at at Indiana this year, for the past whatever 25-30 years, every time the Ohio State went over to Indiana, it ended up being probably 70-75 percent Ohio State fans.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's gonna be a little different moving forward because all the Indiana fans are coming out of the woodwork now to and they're gonna fill that stadium up and it's gonna make it uh more challenging game to go over there and play without a doubt.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, Indiana fans are no joke.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know what, Kenny, that's that's what we're used to.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, we're gonna go to Texas, we're not gonna get a warm welcome there.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're going to USC, we're not gonna get a warm welcome there.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: You know, everywhere we go, I mean, people are gonna put their best foot forward.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I I think if this ball gets rolling for Ohio State, um, look out because this train, this train could be unstoppable.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Well, let's make that transition to the NFL.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: The Cincinnati Bengals, they are, in my opinion, I think they're set up for a big year.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Key factors for me Joe Burrow's got to stay healthy.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: They got to get off to a good start.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: They obviously got Chase and Higgins on the outside.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: They upgraded their defense.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: They uh the thing that jumps out to me is what Joe Burrow said.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And he could he quarterback the team that went to the Super Bowl.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: He said this is the best overall roster he's he's had a chance to play on.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: So that is a huge benefit.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: And just like the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals are gonna benefit from one of the before the season starts, easier schedules in the NFL this year.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it's kind of a massive redemption run for the Bengals, 26 Bengals this year.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the roster has undergone, you know, incredible transformations.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Um the standard, like you said, has never been higher.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, if you look under the hood, you know, what is what has changed?
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Uh it all started with giving away their first round pick to get Dexter Lawrence.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Um just a you know, unmovable force in the middle.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, they kind of branched their way out.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, you know, they got Boye Mafe, um, they drafted Cassius Howe.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Um, now your edges are set to take up for the loss of Trey Hendrickson, who went to Baltimore.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think what you said was correct, Kenny.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Joe Burrow has made an immediate impact not only on the field, but in the front office.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: And, you know, doesn't want, you know, he's 30 years old, maybe 31 now.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: And, you know, he's getting to that point.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, where his best days are coming up.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: And uh you throw in some new wide receivers in there.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Colby Young is going to be a great wide receiver.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Um, we drafted Connor Lew at center, uh, fourth round pick, working his way into the interior offensive line.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but the elite trio of Burrow, Chase, Higgins, um, those guys, along with a uh a tenured offensive line, Orlando Brown Jr., Dylan Fairchild, Teddy Karras, Dalton Risner, who they signed again, uh Americus Mims.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Those are tough.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, those are just tough.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: That's a tough offensive line, you know.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: And then you throw in Chase Brown, who had his best season as RB1, and now he's starting to catch the ball out of the backfield.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, this kid's throwing up one, 150, 200 yards a game in receiving and rushing yards.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, it's just that that defensive core, Kenny, like you said.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's, you know, Sam Hubbard left, which is a heart and soul, you know, Trey Hendrickson was just a workman.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: He just brought his he brought his lunch and did his job.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: You know, Logan Wilson fit fizzled out.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Um, we had to adjust our secondary.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And I think honestly, the defense has just um, albeit the linebackers, um, you know, we stuck with Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but they must see something, Kenny.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: We're not at practice every day.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, we see it on Sundays, and yeah, we see all the missed tackles.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Um, but we gotta, you know, we gotta remember that they were young.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: They were young as hell.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I think with Demetrius uh or Dexter Lawrence there, that Demetrius and Barrett are just gonna flourish because they're gonna, you know, uh Dexter Lawrence and and and um you know Jordan Jefferson, our new defensive uh linemen, they're gonna keep those guys off of our linebackers and it's gonna allow them to make plays.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: So that O-line depth, um if we can get away from a slow start again, you know, I've seen everything, Kenny, on these guys.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I've seen there there's a site that projects them 17 and oh.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: There's a site that that you know projects them uh nine and seven, you know, or uh uh nine and eight.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, it it just it's the Bengals.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, you don't know the X factors.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the AFC North with a new head coach in Pittsburgh, you got a new head coach in Baltimore.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Cleveland's going through some things.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Uh now they got a you know new head coach too as well.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Um but you're right.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: I think you you hit it on the head.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: The strength of the schedule with these guys, that's gonna be uh that's gonna be the key.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's um it's gonna be uh one of those things where uh you know a money Mac.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Hey, we started out three and oh in the preseason, Kenny.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: I can't remember the last time we did that.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: And you could tell that just those guys I mean it it's a different type of attitude down there on the river.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Well, talk about the um the uh the player that they brought in that uh he was basically not gonna have a shot, and then he Burrow calls him up from uh and asks him if he can show up to.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Uh a throwing session.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Myers.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: And and you know, he um Joe calls him up, asks him if he wants to throw.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: And he's like, uh, yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And he's like, well, can you be here tomorrow?
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: And he's like, absolutely.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And you know, unbeknownst to Joe, he, I mean, he was in Atlanta, Georgia, and he got in his car that night and drove all the way up and was was there at the practice field, uh, you know, ready to throw that day with no sleep.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: I think he slept in his car a couple hours, and you know, he was ready to go.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: And I mean, that tells you, you know, just how hungry some of these guys are to um you know make a difference uh on the team this year and how that new found, you know, it's to me, it almost seems like, hey, it's Super Bowl or bust for us this year.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And I I'd love it.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: I I mean, I love it.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think the expectations there, and we got to keep Joe healthy.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: With old Joe Flacco back there too.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're I I just I like I like the roster setup.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: I wish we could have got another linebacker.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: I wish we could maybe bolster uh I'm hearing that we plucked uh um uh a waiver uh transfer from uh the Colts, big 6'8 guy.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: I can't remember his name off the top of my head, but I'm hearing we plucked him away today.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just bolster that up a little bit, and I think we're gonna go.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, I think they got a great chance, and you know, just just looking at it, I I don't see how they don't win the AFC North this year.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: And, you know, they got uh I think they're projected from some things I looked at because it's the NFL where they want everybody to be 500, I could see them winning nine anywhere from nine to eleven games.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And just because there's gonna be some games where they'll probably be a heavy, heavy favorite, and they just end up making you know goofy mistakes and end up losing a game.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: But but that's the NFL.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: It could happen on uh any any game, especially, you know, I'm being a Browns fan.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: I've I've I've always wondered, you know, uh why things go the way they do.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: You know, and and that's a great point, Kenny.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: And and you talk about uh Zach Taylor.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: I mean the pressure's on Zach Taylor this year, and you know, from what I understand, he's given up a lot of his play calling duties upstairs.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, he said he's still gonna be involved in that.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I kind of like that a little bit, you know, and Al Golden uh wasn't a big fan.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I tell you what, the way he's turned it on and the way he's been looking at uh and and you know, diving into this defense and and getting these guys to buy into his his way of uh playing defensive schemes, um it could it could be really turned into something.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, without a doubt, you know, and you know, moving toward Cleveland Browns.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't even know where to start, but uh you know, obviously the the offseason was the big QB controversy.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Um Miles Garrett gets traded, bring in Todd Munkin, new head coach.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I I I looked this up today just out of curiosity.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna throw these names out here.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And I I don't know if you've ever thought about this, but since 1999, the Browns had an opportunity to draft but passed on the following quarterbacks 2000, Tom Brady, Rothelsberger in 04, Aaron Rodgers in 05, Joe Flacco 08, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins in 2012, Derek Carr in 2014, Patrick Mahomes and Watson in 2017, Lamar Jackson in 18, along with Sam Darnold, Justin Herbert, Love at Green Bay, and Hertz, the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Kenny, you can't make it up.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, it's um I I just don't know what's going on uh you know with the quarterbacks.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Andrew Berry uh has completely re-reconstructed the roster through massive 10-player draft class, uh 26 draft class.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Um he got aggressive uh getting the veterans during free agency moves.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Um you know, there's some there's some premier acquis acquisitions in there.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, Jared Verse, the defensive end, I mean, he's tough.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: You know, he arrives from LA, and you know, he'll be a centerpiece um too as well.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Uh Spencer Fano uh is another one off the top of my head.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Offensive tackle, um, ninth overall pick out of Utah.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's a plug-and-play guy.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Uh Casey Concepcion.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, this guy, I mean, this kid can play.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, Denzel Boston, he can play.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Um, so there's dynamic rookie receivers out there that they got and they picked up.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: You know, you throw in uh Noah, and I'm gonna butcher his last name, but Ingo Bing Ingo Binahe, the cornerback, uh, this kid shut down.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: I saw him play a couple times.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Sam Wilson's another defensive end.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but um, you know, uh, to me, uh, despite the new coaching staff, uh, the key veterans, the rising young stars, remain anchors for this team.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think if Munken plays it right, you know, who knows?
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: You know, I just think he just wanted to get out of this bug of saying, hey, you know what?
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna name a starting QB now, Deshaun Watson.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, he did it what three weeks ago, and just said, I'm I'm I'm just we're just gonna do a clean slate.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: And you know, I know Shadur's good, but you know, he's kind of recovering from injury a little bit.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: So is um Dylan Gabriel uh as well.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, Jerry Judy, I mean, you know, that that guy's good.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Uh to me, I think you and I both agree on this, Kenny.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: They got the best linebacker in the NFL, uh, Carson Schwissinger.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, that kid is just unbelievable.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: And then, oh, by the way, you throw in, you know, Denzel Ward and Grant Delpitt.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, all those guys are veteran stability.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Dewan Jones, offensive tackle, you know, those guys are back.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Um, but they've kind of managed a clever roster here.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and they um, you know, they need to protect these guys.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, um, they're young defensively, you know, on several spots.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Of course, they don't have Miles Garrett.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: They got a revamped offensive line um out there, but you know, to me, it's gonna be, you know, the quarterback drama, how much he gets pressured, if he can take it, uh, will he struggle early?
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: You know, what's life gonna be like after Miles Garrett?
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and then, you know, beyond Jerry Judy, you still do have unproven pass catchers.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I think that the Miles trade, you know, I I I know he's probably gonna go down as you know, probably top two, three pass rusher, pass rusher of all time, but I think we got an upgrade in leadership when it comes to Jared Verse based on what's coming out of camp.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Um the thing that that's gonna just be the issue the whole season is the quarterback.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: And I don't know where you stand on it, but I I'm curious to hear where you stand.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: I initially thought that Shador Sanders should be the starting quarterback, but I I understand the the way he's thinking that all right, let's give Deshaun the start.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: First two games are away.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: He doesn't get it done, we easily move into Shador Sanders.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: And right now, based on the Cleveland fan base, other than him throwing, you know, Deshaun Watson being perfect on the field and the Browns winning, it's gonna be hard to get that fan base to get behind that guy.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Who do you think should be the starting quarterback?
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Well, uh to me, Joe Flacco.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: But he's gone.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I I think that um, you know, honestly, uh, you know, we we've said it in the on this podcast last year.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, Shadur Sanders, you know, everybody was waiting for him.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, uh you get in a situation where Deshaun Watson during the preseason didn't look the greatest and was getting booed.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And he had to have Deshaun or you know, he had to have Shadur stick up for him and on social media.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And, you know, it was just one of those things where, you know, I think that um um, you know, the Browns have to make a decision and they have to win their fan base back.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Not only are you building a brand new Taj Mahal stadium, yeah, but you've got to get that fan base back to where it's the old dog pound where nobody wanted to go there and play.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: And, you know, now it's just like, yeah, they're gonna put up a fight for the first couple, you know, quarters, first half, and then they're gonna start making Cleveland Brown mistakes, and you know, they're gonna lose it late or they're gonna self-implode or shoot themselves in the foot.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what every Cleveland Brown fan has endured um, you know, for a long time.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: And I think they've got to start winning their fan base back.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: And to me, it starts with a premier quarterback.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: I think, be honest with you, in my opinion, this is just a Bengals fan, um, but you've got to you've got to clean that quarterback room out.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: And you've got to go for one of these, you know, uh bigger quarterbacks coming out of college, and you got to give him his chance and you gotta stick with them.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: And even you can even if he's a Peyton Manning the first year, he goes, you know, I think he went one in ten his first year um when he got put in the game, you know, and look what he did.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think you got to give him his due diligence and build your team around that quarterback.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: And you know, they're doing everything else, Kenny.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're they're building the defense, they're building, you know, this, that, and the other.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: But the centerpiece, as we all know in the NFL, is a quarterback.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: So, you know, to me, it's it's that's that's where it needs to start.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And, you know, but they're gonna be in a race, a race to the bottom to get one of those quarterbacks.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: And you're dealing with the Miami Dolphins, the Arizona Cardinals, they're all gonna be terrible too.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: So, you know, but there's quite a few good quarterbacks coming out, at least right now, you know.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Well, and and if you look at um the strength, you know, you talk about we talked about the strength of schedule with the Bengals.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, look at the strength of schedule with the Browns.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, the only X factor there, Kenny, is I I think they're playing less home games than they are away games.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that might be a good thing.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it could be.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, I what it was it one game I think they're playing overseas or something.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, I I think it's um you know one of those things where they have to start out quick.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Deshaun Watson has to start out fast.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: And I think they're what are they at New Orleans, the first game?
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: No, they're uh they're at Jacksonville.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: At Jacksonville, sorry.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: At Jacksonville, tough place to play, but that's a winnable game, Kenny.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I I I just you know, I think that that's something that, you know, and I think their first couple games are away.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, first two are away.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: So they got to start out, man.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: They gotta start out on fire, and Deshaun has to kick it in.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, without a doubt.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Well, it's gonna be interesting to see.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: They don't uh the NFL doesn't start this weekend, but um it does uh get rolling um the following week.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: And I guess to to kind of tie all this together, let's just stay with the NFL for right now.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: And who is your NFC North pick?
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Tell me how they're gonna finish in the NFC North, and and then give me your two teams that are gonna be in the Super Bowl and who wins it.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I just for some reason I just can't get over the LA Rams.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I just think um, you know, with that quarterback, that coach, you're talking about a consistency, a continuity, which is something that Cleveland has been lacking, quite honestly.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: And you know, to me, I think they're one of the class teams of the NFL, and they're always there, they're always in the mix.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: So to me, it's the LA Rams uh on the NFC side.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: And who do you got doing the AFC playing them in the AFC?
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Well, in the AFC, you know, I I I just I'm not high on Kansas City right now.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: I just don't know why.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I just don't think they have the arsenal that they used to have and that defense that they used to have.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I mean, Travis Kelsey's, you know, saying, hey, yeah, I'll play another year.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, his mind's somewhere else.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: You know, Pat Mahomes is still Pat Mahomes, though.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, that kid's injured.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: And I mean, you know, I think it's I think all those injuries, Kenny, are starting to catch up to him.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: And to me, at the end of the day, uh, New England's, you know, they're they're tough, they really are.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, to me, I think the class of the AFC is still Buffalo.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Um if there's any team that can go into Buffalo and beat Buffalo, it's the Bengals.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Um, we've done it several times.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think we're um scared, I guess, of Josh Allen.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Um, I think we have a really good game plan.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but if we can keep Josh Allen in the in the pocket, I think we're fine.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: But um to me, Buffalo, LA Rams, right now, they're sticking their heads up as the the favorites.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Well, I you know, I was I I'm with you there because you know we didn't share notes prior as far as who we were gonna pick, but I um on the AFC side, I think this has got to be Josh Allen's year, and and Buffalo's gonna get over the hump.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Of course, I said that last year, but um you know, new coach, maybe something good will happen, who knows?
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Um Cincinnati obviously is a team that's gonna be good.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Denver Broncos um are gonna be there too.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And I think when it comes to the NFC, it's it's either gonna be the Rams or the Seattle Seahawks.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: And you know, maybe the Seahawks repeat again, but if I were to pick and have to pick a winner, I'm gonna say Buffalo over the Rams and uh in the Super Bowl.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yep, yeah, we're right online.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I I honestly uh here, I I have a great thought.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: How about Cleveland Drafts?
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: The ball state quarterback.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Have you seen this kid, Kenny?
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: 510-250.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: 5'10, 250.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: What was that big quarterback they had at uh Kentucky Lorenzen or Jared Lorenzen, I believe?
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: This kid have you, I mean, this kid is a load.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: You know, there you go.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, they could just hike it back to him, let him run for seven yards.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: That's that could make it interesting, that's for sure.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Well, let's um, since we got our NFL picks out of the way, let's let's go to we'll we'll circle back around to the college football playoff.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I have 12 teams written down, and um, you know, I have Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Indiana, BYU, LSU, Penn State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: And that um I'm I'm gonna be a homer here, and I'm gonna say the Buckeyes won it all this year.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I I agree.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: I I think it's Ohio State's uh to lose with that schedule.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Texas is gonna be good.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, that could be a preview right there.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: And Notre Dame's gonna be fabulous.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, he's a great coach.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, he gets his kids to play, they got a chip on their shoulder.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I think Notre Dame's gonna be a problem.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Oregon's always a problem.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Um who knows what Miami, Florida does.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh, you know, who knows what uh some of these guys are gonna do coming out, but uh ACC, I mean you just never know, Kenny.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: Well, I think I think it's uh the Miami and Notre Dame play each other, but that's probably their their toughest game the whole season.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: So their schedule, I would say, probably compares to what Ohio State's schedule was last year, and they you know didn't really have a ton of tough games.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: And you know, maybe that'll hold them back when it comes playoff time.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but but uh Notre Dame's got a quarterback uh that uh you know, based on that man in camp, he finished ahead of everybody else that was there, so he's obviously legit.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, it's gonna be hard to to not uh pick Notre Dame to to win it all this year, but I'm gonna go with the Buckeyes, and um you know, I think that will be uh the interesting.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: And who are you?
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: So you're picking the Buckeyes also?
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I am, and and I'll I'll be honest with you, of of of USC, Texas, Oregon, and Indiana and Michigan.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, we play Plenty Penn State, correct?
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: Okay, so of those games, if we only lose two, we're in.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: If we only lose one, look out.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: If we win them all, it's just it's a it's a un it's an uncontrollable locomotive that nobody can stop.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: Well let's um let's wrap up with uh our upset pick and lock for this coming weekend.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Who do you have?
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Well, I I tell you what, today I just threw down some uh um Draft Kings.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: I took Albany plus 18.5 over Buffalo.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: I took all uh I took all underdogs here.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Okay West Georgia plus 22 and a half at Kennesaw State, and Merrimack plus 28.5 at Delaware.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: So I took those today to make some money today or uh tomorrow.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: I I think a lock, if you had to pin me on a lock, Kenny, it'd be LSU minus 10.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: Lane Kiffin coming in.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: You know, they're playing Clemson at home.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I think this is the first year Clemson was not ranked, if I if if I'm correct on that.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, and they don't have their Ken Klubnick, their starting quarterback.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: He yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Now you and I talked briefly, though, but here's an upset.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Akron at Wait Forest, and Akron's getting 24 and a half.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: Now that's something I would I don't know what do you think about that.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Max School's been playing well lately.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: This isn't the game where the Akron head coach is allowing a booster or a season ticket holder to like call the first four plays of the game.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: Script the first drive.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe it may be the one when they play at home because I imagine they're probably going to wake force.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: But uh I don't know.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: It's uh I have a hard time picking Akron in anything, but uh I know.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Hey, 24 and a half points.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Uh here's another one for you, Kenny.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Sticking with a Mac.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: How about Toledo over Michigan State?
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: No, I think that's a possibility.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Toledo's always no, they're getting nine and a half.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: They're getting nine and a half points.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: Michigan State's got Pat Fitzgerald leading the charge up there, so they'll be a they'll be a different type of team, that's for sure.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: True.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: Well, my um my lot for this weekend is I got Miami just putting it on Stanford.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Stanford, you know, they I believe they squeaked by Hawaii last week in the zero week.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: And then my my upset, and you know, I'm I'm not a hundred percent sold on it, but I maybe Boise State surprises Oregon and beats Oregon.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: They always play that game tough.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's always a nail bitter.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: And Dan Lenning, he's got, you know, he he's had some great teams, but when they get to the playoffs, they just fall apart.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: So he's hoping to put it together, and he's got a really good quarterback coming back, so he should be in good shape.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Well, I I guess to uh to wrap things up, this is our preseason uh predictions, I guess you could call it.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: And starting next week, we're going to be live streaming on YouTube.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: And uh you know, if you if you check out the podcast and you like it, uh please be sure to check us out on YouTube.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I'm looking forward to another uh great football season, and uh, you know, we're going to make it as entertaining as possible for you, the listener.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: Yep.
