- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Jim Bonas.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I just hit record without him knowing because he was...
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Piecing together a well-thought-out argument on why everyone should tune in
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: to Real Football with our own Jim Monas.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: And it's a pleasure to have you, but
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: let it rip, Jim.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I'll shut the hell up.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: No, we do this pod, and we have a great time because we actually do our work.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: You go to places, you go to the team's actual sites, you talk to the players.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I actually watch tape.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I actually did this job for a living.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And it's fun to be able to see the stuff that we talk about.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Honestly, we're giving everybody that listens to this good info.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Whether or not you agree with anything we say, we're giving you good info.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: We're the ones telling you, be careful.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It ain't that pretty yet.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: We're getting fooled on some things.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: We'll talk about who do we trust, who we won't trust after week one a little bit.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I always say it's that trust thing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Hold on now.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But back to the whole I'm really proud of this pod, Tyler.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: You do a great job, and I'm proud of the work we do because we do work.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And we don't just run our mouth and say Reuben Bain's going to win the Super Bowl.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Seriously, those comments, when you think about that comment, somebody actually picked Tampa.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Somebody I respect took Tampa to win the Super Bowl because they have Reuben Bain.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And that's on ESPN.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And I know that's crying over spilled milk.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm jealous.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I wish we had those jobs.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: It's a nice job.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And those guys are good at what they do.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I'm not even trying to say that.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying they just say whatever without any base.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And they've never done what I've done.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And quite frankly, players don't evaluate players very well.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Most of the time they have agendas, and they actually really don't know what they're looking at.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: They go really off stats, production sometimes, and they're not actually looking at the fines.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Like Ruben Bayne,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: we'll keep using Bayne,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: but nobody talked about the fact that he didn't run a 40 and didn't vertical jump.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And I come,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: it's funny now,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I guess I'm one of the old school scouts now,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: but I didn't use, but we just want you to do it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: We don't care what the number is.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I don't care what your 40 time is or your vertical.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Just compete.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Everybody tells me you're the toughest guy in America and you don't want to run a 40.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Brandon Spikes at Florida.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I use him as a great example.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Brandon Spikes at Florida coming out.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: He knew he was slow.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: He was slow in high school.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: He knew he was going to run a bad time, but guess what he did?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: He ran it.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And we respected that.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Nobody was drafting him because he could run.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: We're drafting him to go bang up the middle and destroy fullbacks,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: tight ends, whatever you want to do.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: That's what he did.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: But he wasn't scared.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I think the wrong people get around these prospects too, right?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: They're surrounded by agents for this and agents for that and handlers for this
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: and handlers for that.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And don't run a 40 because it might cost you money.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Where the truth shall set you free.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're seeing it with Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: There's a reason he didn't run the 40.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Amazing.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: He wasn't competitive.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: had it at the site in our Kyler Murray series where his dad would be on his ass game
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: in and game out.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: It was never enough.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Beat him down.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Mentally, I was told, by scouts.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Again, scouts there in Columbus who see this, who are up close.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: They're getting the good, the bad, and the ugly, right?
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: That's your job as a scout.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And that's why Dabo Sweeney drives teams insane.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: I was just talking to a defensive coordinator recently,
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: and I actually had to tweet it out because it was very rich
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: to see Dabo get all defensive with a reporter down there.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I'm sure a lot of people saw it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: This was like a week ago.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: You know, just scolding him.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Did you ever play football?
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is after Clemson just got curb stomped by LSU.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So this is a defensive coordinator.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: This guy's speaking for a lot of people.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And he said that he avoids Clemson players because he doesn't think they're tough.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: And he put it in much different terms than that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And he can't stand Dabo at the Pro Days.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Quote, It's like a recruiting pitch.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: He stands up there and does the same effing shtick.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, this is exactly what parents hear on an effing weekend visit.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: The same nonsense about how great Clemson is and how they're raising these kids the right way.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: And you're going to get the best people.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I don't need this.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Can you just tell me how fast the effing kid runs?
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: That's what you're getting at.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And I think ESPN, again, ESPN, NFL Network.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, now the Athletic has a business partnership.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, their articles are going to show up on the site.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: At all of these places, we have friends.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: We know people that do a damn good job.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: And I feel for those people that do a damn good job,
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: but it should be noted that everybody's kind of in bed with each other
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: at this point.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: So on ESPN, is anybody going to give you the real...
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Is anybody going to be raw?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Is anybody going to speak in those terms about Dabo when there's TV contracts here
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: and gambling partnerships there and everybody's making out
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: and everybody's getting along?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Hell, Disney owns you.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: It's just a Disney company at the end of the day.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: We don't want controversy.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: They don't want it, Jim.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So it's not going to be that critical.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And if it is, it's going to be more of like a for the clip, a hot take for the 17 second clip.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: That can be easily shared on Twitter,
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: and they know what they're doing, usually, I would think, to generate that.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And then somebody says something,
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: and then it's talked about on every single show on the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: It's not Bob Lee's ESPN anymore.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: That's for damn sure.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it's a pleasure to have you, Jim.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: I love having you.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: You always – I mean,
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: and I think people who have listened since 2020,
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: when we first started this thing,
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: again – For those that are new,
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: it started,
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: I was actually talking to you for the two-parter on Josh Allen
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: that I launched Go Long with and how there was a ton of pressure on him with
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: the backdrop being,
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: yes, Terry Pegula, loved Patrick Mahomes and passed on Michael Jordan.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, Allen's been spectacular, hasn't won a Super Bowl, but been spectacular.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: As we were talking about that,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: we were just,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: it was during COVID,
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: we're at the old Resurgence Brewery,
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: downtown Buffalo,
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: and remember,
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: we pounded, like,
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Four baskets of fried pickles because the science told you like,
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: if you're going to get a drink at a bar, you got to eat as well.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So I forgot about that.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: We just, yeah.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: So every once in a while,
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: one of those,
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: one of those Instagrams, uh,
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: slide shows up of like life during COVID
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: and everybody's like got all these contraptions around their head.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: We forget how crazy that time was.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, but anyways, that's kind of how the pod started is we were just talking football forever.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: And I think you brought it up.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Like, we should do this.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: We should just talk football.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Hit record.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Because nobody's talking like this.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Nobody that lived the world that you've lived,
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Eagle Scout,
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Saint Scout,
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Bill's director personnel,
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: and now with the UFL,
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: very few people are willing to share those stories because they're afraid
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: of pissing somebody off.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: That's the other part of it.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: The Diana Rossini thing?
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: I'll get off my soapbox here in a second.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Obviously,
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: not everybody's interlocking fingers and sharing a hot tub with Mike Vrabel
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: or any NFL coach in Sedona.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: But there's a lot of similar arrangements out there.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Wink, wink, transactional.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: I'll report this if you do this for access driven.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: You know, that's a whole other conversation.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Are you going to bite the hand of feeds?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Are you going to piss a team off?
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Probably not if they're giving you a credential.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: We don't care about that.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: There's no transactional relationships.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: And it's a beautiful thing because we are, at Go Long, paid by you, the reader, the subscriber.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: I don't make a dime unless you deem what's written as worth a dime.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Same with this podcast, Real Football.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: And I would hope people understand the purity of that
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: because I think it's getting lost, that independent coverage of pro football.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: It's worse than ever.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: There's not much of it out there.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And I want us to stay in our lane as long as we possibly can to think clearly.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Agree.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: We get to the point.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: We're going to cover the good topics.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: We're going to give it to you really how it works.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I look back.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: We always use ESPN as an example.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: That's the mecca everybody wants to work on there.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And you see what happens.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Ryan Clark now gets bounced, and he's doing something on the pivot.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: He's going to disappear.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: If you're not on ESPN, you're going to disappear, I think.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: See, I disagree with that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: I feel like you can leave, and you're – Voice can grow.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: I don't think you need them anymore.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe we're saying the same thing.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying you have to stay there.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Just watch how hard life is.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: It's a machine at ESPN is how I feel.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And I just feel like once you leave, be careful what you wish.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: I always look at Dan Levitard when he left ESPN and started his own Meadowlark.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Draft Kings.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: He started his own stuff.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And that is,
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: I can remember,
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: just because I listened to him, I can remember the stress he went through.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You know, because it's hard.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: You know, once you get that, it's just a luxury when you have ESPN behind you, basically.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: But no, it's true.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: We did this.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, we had Mina Kimes on our pod.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: I always laugh.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: It was the Anthony Richardson one.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And I'm like,
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I told you guys,
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know how anybody would draft this guy off what I'm watching at Florida.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Like, And it's easy for her to say, oh, you got to take him top five or top 10.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: She was all in on him.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it's a pretty workout or pro day, whatever he does.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: But are you watching tape?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Is your life on the line like it was for us when we were actually making these picks
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: and we dive in and we see this and that?
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: You can't win without a quarterback.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: To me, it's like she doesn't even have to worry about that stuff.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not trying to say anything against Mina at times.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: They do a great job, like we were saying.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: It's not about being right or wrong.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: It's about the experience that you have versus what I've had.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: That's all, what we've done.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: All right, we'll leave it at that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: And Jim's track record, that's how it started.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: I was going to say,
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: for those who have listened from day one,
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: no analyst, writer, Scout, anybody is going to be right 100% of the time.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, if we were to keep a tally of your takes, it'd be a pretty high percentage.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: We're talking probably,
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: if Shaq at the free throw line is one end of the spectrum, you're more so Curry.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I'd say in the 90s, 90 percentile.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: That's when it can go off the rails when I'm saying,
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: I know how you and Brian Westbrook weren't buying my,
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: anybody would take Shaq over Michael Jordan in a draft.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I'll still stand by that.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: If both are in the gymnasium,
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: if those are your only two picks,
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: you have to build a team,
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: and those are the only two guys that you're watching work out in front of you,
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: who are you picking?
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: The 6'5", 2-guard that you can find anywhere, or this whatever Shaq is.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: We all know we've never seen anything like that, and that's my point.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Shaq didn't know what cuts were.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: When Jordan was getting cut in high school, Shaq never heard of cuts.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: And that's just my point.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: That's how we draft.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Like, we look for that rare.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Like, it's just – that's all.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: That's really my point of it.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's not that – obviously,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Jordan's – it's Jordan LeBron, greatest resume, greatest players ever.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not trying to – I just like to bring a different view
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: on – I'm just telling you right now,
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: you wouldn't – you would not pass up Shaq if your job is on the line
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: and those are your two picks.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: You're not – that's a rare guy.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I've seen 6'5 guards that can dunk and shoot 30% from the field.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Jordan was getting people fired before – Before Pippen came and they put together that team.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Well, if it's sacrilegious to speak about Michael Jordan and such, such crass terms, Jim, man.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Ooh, the greatest ever.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Can I also state my all-time favorite basketball player is Isaiah Thomas from
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: the Detroit Pistons.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I'll tell
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: you what.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Now, here's why.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: That performance on the sprained ankle against the Lakers,
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: one of the greatest individual efforts of all time, any sport.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Like, really, if you're just looking for something to do, burn time, YouTube that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: It's insane.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: You can see him hobbling around on one good leg.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And did he put up, what was it, like 28 points in the?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in one quarter.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: 26.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Couldn't have broken ankle.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: He couldn't play game seven.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: That was their series to win.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: He was on a different level.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: But the reason he doesn't, Tyler, what I love about Isaiah Thomas.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: 25 points in the third quarter of Game 6, 88 finals.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: That's what it was.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I thought 26, 25.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Barely able to walk.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: It was amazing.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: But when you look at what we talk about, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron,
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: there's only one 6'1 player to ever actually carry his team to championships.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: One, Isaiah Thomas.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Iverson didn't do it.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Steph Curry brought in some people to help him.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Now, Curry, obviously, to me, is the greatest smaller player ever.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Isaiah Thomas would be second.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Don't think for a second Isaiah couldn't average 30 a game.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: He could do whatever he wanted.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: He went to the University of Indiana,
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: won a national championship, got out of there, goes and takes the Detroit Pistons.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Isaiah Thomas was the one beating the Celtics, the Lakers.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: By the time Jordan started winning, those guys, the Lakers and Celtics, were old.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Isaiah had already beaten them up for Jordan.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to say, we revisit Jordan like he never missed it.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: It really is a lot for me to take.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: The reason I never cared about Jordan is because the Pistons always beat them.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: That was a great 30 for 30, the bad boys.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: It's like those two seasons were trapped between dynasties
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: that Our disgust ad nauseum as the great Celtics Lakers saved the NBA.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Michael Jordan, greatest player ever.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Then right in the middle,
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: he got Isaiah Thomas and all these,
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: for the lack of a better term,
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: brawlers, thugs, literally punching the opposition in the face.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: That's what he was surrounded with.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: He wasn't really surrounded with these sublime basketball talents.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Maybe they made it a good fit.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: They made them different.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Gave them character.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: But Isaiah Thomas carried those teams.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Jordan had – look, let's talk about it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Those Bulls teams were unbelievably loaded.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Isaiah Thomas had Joe Dumars.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Just the guy.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Promise you.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Love him.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Love all the stuff he did as a Piston fan.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: He's an effort player.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: He's not gifted.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Isaiah had to do Dennis Rodman at 6'8".
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: He's a high-effort, just, you know, amazing athlete running around.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Isaiah didn't have a Pippen.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: He didn't have a Kyrie Irving like LeBron had.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Shaq had Kobe.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Jordan Pippen.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, those are – all right, too much on that.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: He didn't have a Judd Bushler and a Bill Wennington.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, they carried those Bulls teams.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Those guys.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: No, those are the guys.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: But really, I had a point there.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: I know it's sacrilegious to speak on Patrick Mahomes as anything other than –
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: The greatest of the greatest, a deity.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Hell, we've done it on this show.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: We had to stop talking about it.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: We had to stop.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: We put a Mahomes band,
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: a self-imposed Mahomes band on ourselves because we were just making him out
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: to be just a deity, larger than life.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And for good reason.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's won three Super Bowls.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: That competitive spirit is rare.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: I've talked to some of his best friends, Coleman Patterson.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: He's known Patrick his whole life.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: He told the story in one of the stories I wrote on.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: They're at Augusta playing around and it's like during free agency.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Out of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl loss when Mahomes,
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: I believe he ran around for 497 yards before pass attempts and sacks.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: He's running for his damn life that game.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: 31-9, they get blown out.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: And so he needs lineman help.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And they're at Augusta.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: One of the holes, and honestly, I should look up.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I can tell you exactly what hole it was.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Hang tight.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I like the detail.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: This is what we do without producers, right, in our ear.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: So it was...
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I like the detail, though.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Hang tight.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Hang tight.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Hole number 16.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: That was a famous hole for Tiger Woods, right?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So, and this is two weeks after the Masters.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Mahomes and a few friends, they're at Augusta.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: You're not allowed to fiddle around on your cell phone at all during gameplay.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Mahomes' caddy thought that Mahomes should know, though, that his phone was ringing nonstop.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: And it was Andy Reid,
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Brett Veach,
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: calling him,
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: texting him,
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: trying to let him know that they were acquiring Orlando Brown Jr. at left tackle.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: And Coleman Patterson says,
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: you could tell something in his demeanor changed because he was like,
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: I got
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: my blindside protected.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: I'm good.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: So Patrick Holmes' shot, it was previously, it landed in the bunker, right of the green.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Really difficult shot.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: He gets this news.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: His adrenaline's pumping.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: He turns to a person next to him and declares he's going to par the hole.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Everybody's laughing at him.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Impossible from this angle.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: One swing.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: His chip shot six feet from the cup.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: Drains the putt.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: This is Coleman Patterson.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: A legendary moment.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: That's one of the hardest up and downs you can get.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: We're also at Augusta, which is one of the hardest courses you can ever play in.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: In general,
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: because of the speed of the greens,
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: the layout of the course, how well it's kept up with.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: And he had a pep in his step.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: The energy came out of him.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: So that's just – you see that in games, in big-time playoff moments.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: He's got to make a play.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: He makes the play.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: He's unlike anything else.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: At the same time, look, when we've seen this before, I think of Brett Favre in his career.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: He wins his three MVPs.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: At the end of that third MVP season, he plays Denver – And they had a plan.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Jeff Perlman gets into it in his book, Gunslinger, where it was the D-line coach, John Tierlink.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Make sure I got that name right, too.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Yes, he was the mastermind behind the game plan.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Remember, Favre was harassed and pressured.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: He still had a hell of a game,
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: but they lost to Denver as heavy favorites because Tearlink had all
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: of these quote unquote like Favre rules that just take him out of his game.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And there's so many different things that go into it.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Tearlink studied 523 Favre passes ahead of that game.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And some of these rules that he had,
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: you got to tackle him low because he relies on the stiff arm.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: He actually doesn't have that quick of a release.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: It looks like he does because he throws it so hard, but he doesn't.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: So it's good to know to finish sacks, finish plays.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: You might be able to force a fumble when usually you don't think you can.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: His snap count was, if he said, you know, Favre's a different guy.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Dick meant the snap was on one.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Balls meant the snap was on two.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Muff meant the snap was on three.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: So Denver started timing up his snap count.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: He knew kind of you had to steer Favre if the pocket's broken up into four quadrants.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: You want to somehow steer him into that third zone because that's
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: where he threw most of his interceptions.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: That's where he made mistakes for whatever reason.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: And he said just completely ignore their running game because that's not going
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: to beat you, which Dorsey Levins had a fine game.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Favre had some mistakes and that was it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: And what happened after that game?
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: The rest of the league took notice.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: The next season, Very good.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: They lose in the wild card, threw a lot more picks.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: The season after that, throws a lot of picks.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: And it took far of a while to kind of rediscover himself and Amon Green and
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: that massive offensive line, Marco Rivera, Mike Wall, Mike Flanagan.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And they ran the ball a lot.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: And by the way, he never did get back to a Super Bowl because it's a copycat league.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: So caveat being, yes, Patrick Mahomes is unbelievable, obviously.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: All that stuff.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: At the same time, we've seen this before with some of the best ever.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: It's teams, they get tape on you.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: They study you.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: And it's all in our story.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Do or die for CJ Stroud.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Nobody's facing more pressure than him this season.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And a big part of the reason why is the defense that he has there.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: And chatting with sources there in Houston in 2024, they lost to Mahomes too.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: But in both of those games in 2024, But they made him look human.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: They made him bleed.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And some sources there in Houston broke down exactly what they were able to do
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: to Patrick Mahomes.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Philadelphia took notice.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Coach on their staff took notice.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: And they used some of those very specific fundamentals.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Again, check out the story if you want to break it all down.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: One of them being,
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: don't let him just knife up field like he did in this Monday night game
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: against Denver.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: He scored a touchdown.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Travis Kelsey just tackled somebody on that play, by the way.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: It should have been a holding call.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: But that's what you have to do.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: You have to stay disciplined in your lanes because you actually want him
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: to go horizontal because he doesn't move like he once moved.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Taboo, I know.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: People around the NFL are noticing that Patrick Mahomes...
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: He's not consistently improvising and creating
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: and making those magical plays outside the pocket like he once did.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: And Travis Kelsey is old and slow.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I know he had one big play in this game, so maybe he's not completely dead yet.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: But they don't really have receivers that gain separation, that scare you.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, not like a Nico Collins, 6'4", 222, freaks of nature.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: So it's separation.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: If you've got guys that can hold up one-on-one, you'll be good on the back end.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: It's time for Patrick Mahomes' counter.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Is he going to be able to evolve and change?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: And I think that Andy Reid and the Chiefs, they know this.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: That's why they went out and signed Kenneth Walker and reconfigured their defense,
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: reconfigured the offensive line.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: I think Andy Reid and Brett Veach know they've got to win a different kind of game.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: They can't just put everything on Patrick Mahomes' shoulders and hope for magic.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: It's got to look different.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: It looked different.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: They won big.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Is that going to be enough?
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: And Jim Monas, where is Patrick Mahomes, in your opinion, with his game?
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Look, and the other thing is the Texans have freaks on defense.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: You know, the Bills did whatever they wanted to.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: That's a whole other story.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: But Will Anderson,
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Daniil Hunter, Derek Stingley, like they've got the dudes to just Man up, play ball.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: They don't have to blitz.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: They can do what they want to do within these own Mahomes rules to look good.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, Philly copied it,
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: and Mahomes didn't cross midfield until they were down 34-0 in that Super Bowl.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: And then the very next year, for the full offseason, he had career lows across the board.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: So his trainer, he shared our story.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: What did he say here?
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: He goes...
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he looked at my tweet, and he just quote tweeted it and said, oh, really, Swan?
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Bobby Strupe is a great trainer, by the way.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: They do a lot of funky things for Patrick Mahomes.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: I always love those videos.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: But thanks for sharing the story, Bobby.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: We're going to see.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: If you're playing the Chiefs now, you've got to make Mahomes beat you.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: You have to see what he has right now.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: He got by.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: They got him through that game the other night, and the Broncos played.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you just whiff.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: You don't show up.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: You throw out your best game, throw out your worst game.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: That's not the Broncos team.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: We definitely know they're better than that.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: So the Chiefs got a win.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: We're talking about that run.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: The run looked bad.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, when you watch it, it looked like he was – I mean, he's gutting it out.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: That's a champion.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: That's that Jerry Rice, the stuff that we talk about.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: You can't find these champions.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: We don't understand what they have in them, and he has that.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: His team knows it, and that's why they do anything for him.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: But when you look at their roster, it's to your point, who's scaring you again?
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Worthy can take the top off, but he's not accountable.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: He's little.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: But you know he can go deep.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: So you just pay attention to Worthy.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: But they haven't found a way to really make him a consistent player
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: that other defenses need to worry about.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: So they don't have that other weapon.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: That's a tough way to make a living if they think they're just going to run the ball.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: So Mahomes is going to have to be Mahomes if they want to beat the big boys.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're going to talk about it.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: The AFC is still going through the Borough, Lamar, Josh Allen.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Now Mahomes has to go through them, to be honest with you.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: I think he's a step below them right now with where he's at physically.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: They beat the number one seed last night.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, Denver was your Super Bowl pick.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: So let's not minimize the bigger picture.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: They got to win at home.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Mahomes is out of a torn ACL.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: They're...
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Things are good in Kansas City.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Kenneth Walker, the way he just sprinted away.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: I forget.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: I think it was 22 for Denver.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: It looked like he had a perfect angle on Kenneth Walker Jr.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, really.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Speaking of Shaq, it's like that Shaq meme.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: I was not familiar with your game.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: I was not familiar with Kenneth Walker's breakaway speed.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Holy hell.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: He just leaves him in the dust on that long touchdown.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: And all Kenneth Walker had...
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: 173 yards on 23 carries.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: That's 60 yarder.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Mahomes, he finished 15 of 27.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Didn't he start like two of 12?
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Nothing downfield.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: He had 184 yards,
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: two touchdowns,
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: but one of the touchdowns was like a little flip over to Rasheed Rice and one was
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: a shovel pass,
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: which like what Troy Aikman said, oh, I wish we had those in my day for my stats.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: And then 59 of those yards was that Kelsey play.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: He Let's pump the brakes.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Let's pump the brakes.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Patrick Mahomes is back, and Patrick Mahomes is going to take over the world.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: It was not a takeover the world performance.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: To me, the story was how bad Denver played, how bad the Chargers played, and their loss, too.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Week one lies.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: We know that.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: I get the Chiefs credit.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: They clearly have evolved.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: They know they have to win a different type of game.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: How long can...
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: How long can this take them, you think, when you look at the whole AFC?
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: To your point, I love what – I mean, obviously, he's Andy Reid.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I've always said it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: All-time greatest coach for a reason.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Evolves, finds different ways.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: He's a problem solver.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: That's what we always talk about.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Solve the problem.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Don't complain about it.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: What are you going to do to solve it?
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: And that's what Andy Reid does.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: I just find it funny that that's not a way to win, though.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: That you think you're just going to grind it out with Kenneth Walker all year.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, like you said, pump the great.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: We are all excited and like, wow, look at this Chiefs team.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: You caught Denver off.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: You caught them on a bad night and it spirals.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Sometimes when it spirals, it spirals for teams and you can't.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: But you don't want to judge yourself off that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: We know Denver is a good football team.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: So good job.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: You whipped them, took advantage of everything you needed to.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: But there is more coming.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: In fact, as you know, Tyler, I like to dabble with some gambling.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: They are playing the Colts this week.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Who are getting six and a half points.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm all over this Colts team right now because I actually didn't think
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: the Colts played that poorly in their game against Baltimore, believe it or not.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: They show some signs of life against Baltimore.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Baltimore whipped them,
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: but they had to whip them because the Colts were actually doing some things to them.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: So I think Kansas City's in for a little bit of a rude awakening this week.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know if Daniel Jones can move around,
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: which really kind of made him a Serviceable starter, the fact that he could run.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: He didn't do that against Baltimore.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Don't know where he's at coming off that injury.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: But if Daniel Jones still has his legs, that cold team could be tricky for the Chiefs this week.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: And look at the opponents.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: He had Bo Nix.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: He's unable to hold onto the ball.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: What the hell was he doing in that play?
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: He's running right.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: He's running left.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: It's slipping out of his hand.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: It looked like it was going to be this back and forth heavyweight fight early on.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: The Chiefs go down and score.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: The Broncos go down and score.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: So yeah, there's what the Chiefs were dealing with at home.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: And then you look at what the Colts were dealing with and Lamar Jackson
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: and Derrick Henry, my Super Bowl pick, the Baltimore Ravens.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: I like the The tip, you know, we hate gambling here at Go Long.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: It's ruining the world.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: I don't want anybody to do it.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I don't want anybody to do it.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Tyler, speaking of the Super Bowl picks,
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: thank you for allowing me to still continue to write on Go Long
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: because my Go Long Super Bowl prediction this year,
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: you have the right to probably hire me.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: After week one,
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: I picked Green Bay,
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: who was in complete shambles, and the Denver Broncos, complete shambles.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: So there you go for my Super Bowl picks.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Sean Payton, you live this too in New Orleans, and it's definitely been the case in Denver.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: It's weird.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: His September record is not very good.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: He just tries to figure shit out the first month of the season, I guess.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: That's actually good.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't have a reason for that because I'd never heard that before,
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: but I know one thing about he and Sean McVay.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Anytime the great ones get embarrassed, they're going to come back.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: They'll come back.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: They'll be fun to watch how they call the game,
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: especially Coach Payton giving up that play calling duty.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know about that.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know about that.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: To me, this organization hired you.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: They ate that Russell Wilson contract money for you.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: You said get him out.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: They did it.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: You got your quarterback that you told them is good enough in Bo Nix.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: You call the plays.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: You're getting paid.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: That's what made you a great coach.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: I lived it.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: I have a ring because of it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: He and Drew Brees.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: You saw how Drew Brees talked about him at the Hall of Fame speech, if you saw it.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: It was like a relationship you can't explain.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: It was a seriously professional, like, the way they looked.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like buddy-buddy.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: They fought,
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: and they had their disagreements,
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: I'm sure, like everybody does coaching quarterback.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: But the respect those two have for each other, that's what you have to have.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Anyway, that's.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Broncos will be fine.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: The Broncos will be fine is my point of all that.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: The game wasn't as bad as the final score would seem to indicate.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Spiral, spiral.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: And they were terrible in this.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just spiraled.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: So I still like Denver in the AFC West.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: I want to get your perspective.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm just trying to help you out.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: We used to say growing up as kids, I hate to go back to as kids when we would gamble.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Your team would be down 7-0 on that first 10-minute update on
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: the 10-minute ticker back in the day.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: If your team was down 10-0, your friends would laugh at you, like, you know, 7-0 first update.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: You're like, oh, do you want the bet?
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Like, if you laughed at our bet, you had to take it, like, if you made fun of it.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Because you just laugh, like, oh, you lost already, 7-0.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: But that's what gambling does to you, too.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: It just drives.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: That 10-minute ticker was like, we sat by the TV just waiting for those score updates.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Bad.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, man, that brings me back.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Before school,
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: second grade,
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: third grade,
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: fourth grade,
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: you had to wait for that score for the Charlotte Hornets on
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: the headline news ticker.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: It wasn't even on ESPN yet.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: You had to flip over to headline news,
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: or you just kept it on SportsCenter and waited 47 minutes for the Hornets highlight
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: to get its turn.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: And then you might have to go to school.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: So there's some more, it's like you're going to school and we don't know what happened.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: I love that we're talking about the Hornets.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: You were looking for Charlotte Hornets scores.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: We talked about the Detroit Pistons.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: This is our football podcast.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, man.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Speaking of kids in the morning,
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: as an aside, I'd love to see if you're waging the same battle there with Walter.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Ella is having bad dreams.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: We're in the bad dream phase, Jim.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: It's so funny as a parent because it's like,
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: It's like trying to tell somebody, just relax, right?
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Or just don't be sad.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: You can't tell your child.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can say it's just a dream.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: They know it's just a dream.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: They know it's not real.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: But Allison, what did she say last night?
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I dreamt of an angry clown who wanted to eat me.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, that would be...
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: That would be pretty horrifying.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: That's pretty terrible.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: It's like that old Brian Regan bit, the comedian.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: He's like, put yourself in your kid's shoes, right?
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: One kid he saw lost a balloon and is floating away.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: And he saw the dad say to this kid, oh, quit crying.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: We'll just get you another balloon.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: He's like, imagine if your wallet was just floating away.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Your kid said, we'll just get you another wallet.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: It's your life.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: That's their life.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Your kid is having a bad dream about an angry clown who wants to eat you.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: That's You just, all right, I'll let you come into bed with us.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: That's all right.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Get into this habit.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: It's more of a, with Walter, it's more of a, just the dark.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Not dreams, necessarily.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Just scared of the dark.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Which, that's normal.
- 34:32It's fine.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Nightlights?
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: There's ways around.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: We're working.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: When we put the kids down, you've got the closet light on.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: You've got the lamp on.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: You've got the nightlight.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: The nightmares don't ever stop either, unfortunately.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: That's a good point too.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's a life lesson in there somewhere with the angry clowns.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: You must defeat the clown through inception, Ella.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: Come on, I'll help you.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: We'll slay the angry clown.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Before we move off of Mahomes, though, I do want to get your opinion on this.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: I'll detail the blueprint that the Texans used.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: The Eagles copied and to the best they could, the rest of the NFL applied as well.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: So again, this was in 2024 and then in 2025.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: And then in 2025, the Texans, they battered Mahomes around.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: He had the worst game of his life in that game.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: So in the rest of the NFL, tried to use it best they could with their players.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: So the way the one coach broke it down to me is you've got to remember
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: that Mahomes kills you by stepping through your inside rushers
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: and taking inside gaps.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: You've got to close off those interior escape lanes,
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: give him a sliver of a vertical A or B gap, and you're toast.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: The smarter plan is to flush him horizontally.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: And traditionally, this is a poison pill again.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: This is what I wrote my story.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Traditionally, it's always been best to quarantine such magical improvisers inside the pocket.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Think about Aaron Rodgers.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: At his peak, the Packers four-time MVP feasted on the move.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: And true, Mahomes also owned that broken play for a while.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Travis Kelsey may be the best ever at uncovering and finding dead zones.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: The rapport was damn near telepathic.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: But now Kelsey is a skeletal 37-year-old shell of himself.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: And people around the NFL are whispering about Mahomes' declining mobility.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Multiple execs have told me, They've told me this, Jim.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: They bring it up unsolicited,
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: that his mobility is dwindling, and he's also coming off of a torn ACL.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: He thrives on defenders just flying wide out of the play.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Again, you saw it against Denver,
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: and then shimmying up through those vacated lanes to either run
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: or deliver some rockets.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: These Texans in Philly followed.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: They proved that if you stay in your lanes,
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: refuse to rush behind him,
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: And force him to go back and out that you've got a chance.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Especially when you have 11 maniacs like the Texans do.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Forge a disciplined wall, flush him outside, hunt, chase, close.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: And again, he doesn't have receivers that are just burning people.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: And in that game against the Texans that Houston won 20-10,
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Houston, they played like three coverages total.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Blitzed three times on 64 snaps.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: And Mahomes was 14 of 33 for 160 yards, no touchdowns, three picks, two sacks.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Both his yards per attempt,
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: 0.8, and passer rating, 19.8, were less than half of his previous career lows.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: And that's why Andy Reid went out and got Kenneth Walker, 43 mil over three years.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: They know something had to change.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Do you think that that is a plan?
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: That will work against Patrick Mahomes over the long haul.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: And what can, what will he do himself?
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Like not talking Kenneth Walker and the big,
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: what can Mahomes do to evolve,
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: to change if this is what teams are going to do to him?
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Because he knows, he knows the teams are, he knows he has to get rid of the football.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: He is not, there's no way that they've instructed him.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Like that play the other night when he ran in that touchdown, they were holding their breath.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: They weren't thinking he was going to do that.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: So he knows he has to get rid of the football.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: The great ones, I always say, the great ones always get rid of the ball.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: He will.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: But it's going to take away, to your point, what makes him special.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: If he's not able to create and get out of those and create those lanes
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: that he always does and make those special throws,
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: because who is the receiver that is just going to beat you down in and down out
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: on time?
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: If you're going to play with rhythm and get rid of the ball quickly,
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: you need your weapons to get open.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Kelsey's not that guy anymore.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: So that's what we have to pay attention to.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: How do they get open and how quickly does he get rid of the ball?
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: And does it take away from what made him special, his ability to scramble?
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Because I do think it's limited.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: He didn't look, it didn't look right to me.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, it looked like it should look coming off an injury, that injury.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Again, a torn ACL late in the season.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: When that happened,
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: I remember immediately thinking,
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: oh, he's Going to be on four-week IR to start the next season.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Justin Fields is going to take over here for a little bit, and he's back.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: He worked his way back,
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: and he won a game against a team that was in the AFC Championship game,
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: hosting it the year prior.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: It wasn't what it's being described as, though, in the national airwaves, I think is your point.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: I get so excited when we bring up backup quarterbacks.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I want Jeopardy.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: You brought up Justin Fields.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes you forget who the backups are on teams.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: I want the show Jeopardy.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: You know how they have the categories?
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: They should have a backup quarterback category.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: I would love to see.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Because, I mean, that is the one.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: If you can name some of these guys, who is the current backup for so-and-so?
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: It's an unbelievable game.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: But anyway,
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: I forgot Fields was their backup until obviously they did that play the other night.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Things get heated here at Golong HQ during Jeopardy, by the way.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Me and my wife, Gina, we battle.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: We got it recorded.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Once all three are down,
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: having their sweet dreams,
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: we fire up a little Jeopardy, keep tally, pick this up during COVID, and it's stuck.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Just picture you.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: I just picture you hitting the buzzer saying, who is Cooper Rush?
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, I die for the sports categories, but Gina is such a good generalist.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: She knows so many things about so many things.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: It's tight.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: It goes back and forth for sure.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: And there's some trash talk.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: I'm a very sore loser, as she points out.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: And that's that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I'm with you.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: There is Sports Jeopardy now, right?
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Isn't Joe Buck hosting Sports Jeopardy?
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: I haven't watched it.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: I wonder if they have.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: We should look at that to see.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: I forgot about that.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: So they may have a backup.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: How about just the whole show?
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Backup quarterback Jeopardy.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Make it the whole Jeopardy.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: All backup quarterbacks.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: All in.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: All in.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Who's your favorite backup quarterback of all time?
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: It's got to be Jacoby.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: It's Brissette.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: What do you consider him?
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Do you consider him a backup?
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: That's the key.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I think he is.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: He's a low-end starter.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Ideally, he's not a starter.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: He is ideally a backup from day one.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: That's how I viewed him.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: I scouted him in college.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: I just feel like he is everything you want in a backup quarterback.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: He delivers.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: He's tough.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: He's a leader.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: He has just proven it time in and time.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: He's what you want.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: And if you need a stopgap year.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: There's no deep cut out there, like a random quarterback that had a special place in your heart?
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Who are the backups that you love seeing come in?
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: I do got one for you.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: I don't think you were with the Eagles yet, but there is one at the tip of my tongue.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: What about a young Coy Detmer at Lambeau Field in 99 giving Favre all he can handle?
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Speaking of those Favre teams,
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: I remember he
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: had the celebration where he took his hand and he's going like this,
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: looking over to the Packers' sideline,
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: and Favre gave it back to him when they barely beat a three-win Eagles team.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Koi Detmer, he
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: had some swag.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: For a backup quarterback who wasn't very good, he felt pretty good about himself.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: That reminds me of Minshew.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: I think of Minshew like a Koi Detmer.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: Just those crafty backup quarterbacks that don't have the physical skill set,
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: but they can beat you with how their minds are.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: They're fearless.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: We always talk about YMCA hoop players.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: They're just going to be tricky with how they play quarterbacks.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Minshew, Brissett, those guys are like, I mean, those are top tier backups.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: Koi Detmer.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: What does this mean for the rest of the AFC?
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: Like if we just saw what Josh Allen was able to do with Joe Brady,
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: and we're not going to talk too much Bills because I don't know
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: when people are going to be listening to this first real football episode.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: They got the Lions Thursday night.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: I'll be there at New Highmark Stadium.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: But.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: If you're Josh Allen and the Bills,
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: if you're Lamar Jackson and the Ravens,
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: if you're Joe Burrow with the Bengals and you've got a defense all of a sudden.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: It's your time.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: I think you're still feeling pretty damn good about your chances to get to and win a Super Bowl.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: What else stood out to you in the AFC week one?
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: The Patriots didn't play.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: We're writing the Patriots off a little quickly.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: I will say that.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: I revisited that game.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, May fell apart.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: We always talk, sometimes you fall apart, it happens.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: But they played a good football game.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: They have a good defense.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: I still think they're a good football team.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: I will say this.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: This is what we needed to see to find out about Drake May.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: As far as, who is he?
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Is he really the guy?
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Because I've questioned it from day one.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: I was never the huge May believer.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: Now what he did last year was special,
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: but we know how he has not played well in the playoffs,
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: and then he starts the year like this.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: So then you lose A.J.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Brown.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: This is what we pay you for.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: This is why you're the franchise quarterback because franchise quarterbacks keep you going.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: Whatever the injuries are, it doesn't matter.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Next game.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: So let's see if May has it.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: And then I was thinking the Broncos,
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Chargers, that division was supposed to be so amazing, Chiefs.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden you look at the Chargers and Broncos, you're like, who are those teams?
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Like they didn't even really show up.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: So that stood out to me.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: And then Lamar, your Super Bowl pick is scary.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: And I wrote in the column that you are so,
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: you know, I appreciate you letting me ramble on the game recaps.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: But I did write,
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: I think Zay Flowers for Baltimore may be more important than Derrick Henry is
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: to Baltimore.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: They need Zay Flowers.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: He is an absolute weapon in that,
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: you know, what I call in space, where you just can't game plan for him.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: He can score from anywhere on the field.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: And obviously Lamar can too, but Anyway, Baltimore looks real.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know they lost Tyler Linderbaum,
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: but I think adding John Simpson,
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: adding a different mentality,
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: you can tell this is a team that wants to get back to pushing people around in
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: the trenches.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Derrick Henry hasn't lost anything.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: Lamar hasn't lost anything, torquing around the edge of defenses.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: Declan Doyle is brilliant, 30-year-old.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: I know you tell me to go...
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Pump the brakes on these young coaches and young quarterbacks sometimes.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: I think he'll be a head coach.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: I think he's a really smart guy.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: No, I think times have changed.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: They needed
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: fresh blood.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: 18 years of John Harbaugh.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: They needed Jesse Minner.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: They needed Declan Doyle.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: You can hear it in their voices down there spending time around this team.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: It's different.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: The Giants, for example.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: I think John Harbaugh is right for the Giants with everything they needed out there.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: It's definitely a different A different age out there with the New York Giants.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, in a very small way,
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: I wanted to go out there and do a bigger picture story on the team and was told,
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: well, the locker room's being renovated.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: Only beat writers are allowed in the locker room.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: No outside media, but you can hang out at the press conferences if you want.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: It was very cordial back and forth.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: I said, well, are one-on-ones available outside of the locker room?
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: And it was told, no guarantees.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: That's Sean Harbaugh, right?
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: That's Harbaugh.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: I got to think.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: He's got a way of doing business.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Again, as noted in our mission post at Golong, there are other ways to get players.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: There are other ways to get teams.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: There may be one team in particular that's still pissed off about something I wrote
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: at Bleach Report eight years ago.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: If you can do the math on that one, well, we're still going to write about that team.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: So there are other ways to deliver football in the real and the raw.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: But yes, Drake May, I'm concerned, Jim.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Is the shoulder a thing?
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: And that's what we talked about at the end of last season.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: He admitted after the Super Bowl that the injury was a little worse than he let on
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: in so many words.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: And you look at some of those throws.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: I know one game, you don't want to read into anything.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: That's why I'm asking the question.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: It, You can see
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: where he's going with the ball and it's just a little short.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: If it's labrum related,
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: you wonder if there's a lingering effect there,
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: if there's something long term that should be a concern when it comes to Drake May.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: I feel like if there was any type of,
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: I've been in these medical meetings before,
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: if there's any type of fear of anything doing damage to you or you're not able
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: to play at your highest level, there's no way they would let him play.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: They wouldn't risk They wouldn't risk him playing it in the first game of the season.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: No.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: They feel like he's ready.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: But could it be more of a chronic thing where it's just something he just has
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: to deal with is my point.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: If that's the case, they're keeping that behind closed doors.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: We won't know that one because that goes back to Drew Brees getting turned down by Miami.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: That's that high-level medical stuff that Only certain people know who's approving,
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: who's not approving of the injury.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: So that's high level.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: They're keeping that behind closed doors if there is something going on.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: But I just think with the Jets and Miami in that division,
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: they're not going to be good enough, those two teams.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: If the Patriots aren't better or what they were,
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: man, the Bills just need – They're smiling right now.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: The Bills could seriously make a huge run at this home field.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Bills surely didn't mind the outcome there Wednesday night.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: No.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Seeing Drake May struggle, seeing A.J.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: Brown go down.
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: Patriots defense looked good.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, they should have won the game.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: They're driving to win before that interception.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: That was their game to win.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: Against the defending champs in their house.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: Again, though, you need to beat a backup quarterback.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Drew Locke is definitely high on the Pantheon of backup quarterbacks, but he's in there.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: That's why the Packers collapse was so humiliating to lose to Carson Wentz.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, Kyler Murray went down six minutes into the game.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: You're up 22-10.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: It should be 35-10, and Matt LaFleur has just mastered the art of completely falling apart.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to bring it up.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: Cause I figured you and Bob, yeah, you and Bob covered it.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I didn't want to bring it up.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I'm with you on the floor.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: That's it's, it's enough.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: That's insane to me.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: Like that is your job.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: You cannot be blowing these games.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: The crime of it is how to me, how, uh, how good Jordan love play too.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, he almost threw 400 yards against that Brian floors,
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: blister, blister, 80% of the time, the line in front of them is piecemeal together.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: Some of the plays he made,
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: just like Frogger to the left,
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: to the right,
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: up, back, down, rolling when he has to roll, throwing at different platforms.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: It was Mahomesian,
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: young Mahomesian in his play style, up until the mistakes at the end, granted.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: But it should have never been in that position.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: At what point do we have the conversation, Jim?
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Is Matt LaFleur,
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: not just Matt LaFleur, the Packers in general – Wasting this version of Jordan Love.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: Love is.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: We might be moving toward that conversation with how that game went off the rails
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: for Green Bay.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Because in my opinion, I thought Love was fantastic.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: It's why I picked Green Bay to go to the Super Bowl.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: It's also why I put LeFleur on the hot seat.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: Because they are built to go to the Super Bowl.
- 51:03SPEAKER_00: They have franchise quarterback, playmaker in Parsons when he comes back.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: And they had a stud running back.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: Now, all of a sudden, we don't have the running back playing and we don't have Parsons yet.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: No Jacobs, no Parsons.
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: But guess what we have?
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: And I believe in him.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: We have Jordan Love.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: When you have the right quarterback, there are no excuses.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: These injuries don't matter.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: Parsons will be back.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: Love will get you through.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: I believe in him.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: I think he steps up and gets this team.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: We're going to find out once again.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: Love and Drake May are very much being told, we need you.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: We are hurting right now.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: And it's on the quarterbacks to pull you out.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: This is what you get paid for.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: It's why you're the franchise.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: And let's see who steps up.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: I think love's ready for this.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: And when you see if love gets them through, yep,
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: if love gets them through,
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: and when Parsons comes back,
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: that energy,
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: that team, that belief they'll have, they're like, man, we just won games.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: Now we got Parsons coming.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: Because there's very few players on defense we talk about
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: that are actually true game,
- 52:05SPEAKER_00: you know, game wreckers, game changers, however you want to say it.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: Hutchinson on Detroit's one of them now.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Man, did he come back, authority.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: But yeah, this love in May, this is true moments for them in their careers.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: Last time the Packers lost six in a row was the Dark Ages,
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: if you're going to take it back to last season, 1990, 1991, right?
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: Pre-Far, pre-Wolf, pre-Reggie Wade, pre-Holmgren.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: It's the last time.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: And I think it is fair to carry last season into this season.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: I know no two teams are the same.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: The coach is there.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: The symptoms of the losses, the symptoms from the losses that you saw last season.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: Denver, no response when your quarterback gets shoved in the head.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: The two Chicago losses, inexplicable.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: Ravens getting flattened in every way.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: It's what you saw against Minnesota.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: It's concerning.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: you can talk about finish all you want,
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: like Matt LaFleur did all offseason,
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: but if you don't have that in your coach,
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: in yourself,
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: in your own DNA,
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: in the way you lead,
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: because to me it's bigger than just taking points off the board like he did, right?
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: That's what he's getting killed for.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: They went up by eight on the road.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: I didn't mind it, honestly.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: And inside the chat, I was kind of a...
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: Alone voice in that department.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Most of the Packer fans hanging out in our game day chat, which we do every Sunday.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: Hang out with us, everyone.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: They were killing LaFleur for that.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: I was like, you know what?
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: I don't mind it because get one yard.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Get one yard.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Go up by two scores.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Bury this team.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: That would be finishing.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: And they didn't go to Tucker Craft.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: He's coming off of an injury.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: You've got LaFleur saying one thing.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: The offensive coordinator Sinovich saying another.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: They're not on the same page on Whether Kraft was ready or not, whatever.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Gain one yard.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: To me, it's more so there's something to this team's just football genetic makeup
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: where things start going wrong and you can't respond.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is a team that's lost games without punting last year.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: One mistake rolls into another and another and another and another
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: and they can never curtail it.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, you couldn't hear yourself think in US Bank Stadium.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: That place was...
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: Insane.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: There's a reason Aaron Rodgers called it one of the toughest places to play.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: Those fans were bringing it.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: The line didn't know who to block,
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: where Flores were sending bodies, and it completely got away from him.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: It's more holistic, I guess, is the concern with LaFleur to me.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: Agree.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: It's an operational thing.
- 54:49SPEAKER_00: It just shows up too often to ignore it.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: I know you've got a few topics you want to get to, Jim, so take the floor.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: No, we hit most of them today.
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: The quarterback situation right now in the NFL is outstanding,
- 55:09SPEAKER_00: but what we're coming back to is still the same guys.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: That's what I kind of love.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: What I wanted to talk about, I know what it was.
- 55:17SPEAKER_00: Jaden Daniels and Hurts didn't play a very good game, either one of them, throwing the football.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: Hurts made a couple like he always does.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: His deep balls are pretty.
- 55:27SPEAKER_00: He'll hit you with a deep ball.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: He'll hit you with a straight ahead run on a third down, break your heart.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: Jaden Daniels did not look right.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: They were out of sync on offense.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: His throws were errant.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: So those are some notes I had from the weekend.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: I was hoping to see more out of Daniels.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: Still had chances to win,
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: but neither of those quarterbacks looked like they were ready to – they need
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: to play better, I think, to take it to that level.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: Now, let's just talk.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: I don't want to talk about Caleb Williams because you guys handled that on your pod.
- 55:57SPEAKER_00: But, man, Tyler.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: It is fun.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, can I just ask?
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: And then you go.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Because we pretty much hit what I wanted to hit on.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: Where was your take on Caleb?
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: Because I know how you feel about it.
- 56:11SPEAKER_00: Did you see what you needed to see as far as did it look different first half?
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: Caleb Williams was...
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Exceptional, obviously.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think what is most impressive is the speed.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: He didn't run the 40, obviously.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: So we don't know what he's got just in terms of raw, straight-ahead speed.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: But both of those touchdowns, he hit the gas and was gone out.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: And Bob pointed this out on the NFC North pod that we do.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: Carolina was without, I don't know, like four or five guys.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Their defense was a mess.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: But Chicago took care of business.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: I think what makes Chicago...
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: So dangerous is that rushing game, man.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: It was like a flashback to the Black Friday Philly humiliation where it didn't matter.
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: You could have put 11 guys in the box,
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: and I feel like the Bears would gain four yards or more because Jonah Jackson,
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: Darnell Wright on those down blocks,
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: go back and watch it,
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: are shoving whoever's in front of them onto their heels,
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: then onto their ass, and there goes Kyle Manon guy.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: There goes DeAndre Swift.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: If they had that run game churning like that,
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: remember last year, it took a while for their run game to really get going.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: And I think there was some frustration with Ben Johnson,
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: but he pointed out subtly in some of his press conferences that it would take time
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: for him to really get the ground game going.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: But when they're healthy up front and they get into those second and fours,
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: third and twos,
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: fourth and ones,
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: Although I did love that they went for it on fourth and went deep in the row
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: and they actually missed that.
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: They keep it in these down and distances to where, yeah,
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: then you can unleash Caleb Williams in ways that you saw at the end
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: of those games last season when he's having five of the best plays you'll ever see
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: in the sport.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: You can kind of pick your spots.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Courtney Cronin, who does a great job covering the Bears for ESPN.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Speaking of ESPN, she does a very good job.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: She made a great point pregame.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: And she talks to everybody in that building,
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: House Hall, that this season, Caleb Williams, he wants to take more risks.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: Like he wants to put the ball into quote unquote danger more often.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: And you can almost see Ben Johnson in the corner of your eye.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: Like, does he like that?
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Well, no, I think he, I think he wants that now.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: I think there's a command that Caleb has that he clearly didn't have last season.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: We're going to see more of those chances.
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: So let's see what he does against Brian Flores.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to see this game.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: The way that Minnesota, look, Minnesota almost gave up 400 passing yards to Jordan Love.
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: And yet Brian Flores coached a great game because there's so much havoc.
- 58:47SPEAKER_01: There's so much chaos.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: They don't care about giving up some big plays because they know they're going
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: to get a sack fumble.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: They know they're going to get a pick at some point that will change it all.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: So I think that Caleb Williams probably puts up big numbers.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: They probably run the ball well.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: It's can Brian Flores and the Vikings force that key turnover
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: against Caleb Williams, who does want to take more, more chances.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: They're going to have to put up points because Chicago's defense is terrible, right?
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: They're going to need 30, 40 points to win some of these games.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: They made Bryce Young look like Drew Brees.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: I think Drew Brees was calling the game.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: They made Bryce Young look like an all-pro,
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: and maybe Bryce Young is taking that step for all we know.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: It's week one.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: But either way, we're not going to be able to take our eyes off Chicago this season.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Last guy I want to comment on is Baker Mayfield.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: That was some garbage.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: Straight garbage.
- 59:41SPEAKER_00: That is the most maddening.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was maddening to watch him be so out of control.
- 59:47SPEAKER_00: I always use the word with Carson Wentz, spastic.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: But Mayfield had that spastic stuff going on.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: He always comes across as small anyway, like small hands.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: It's like every time he gets hit, the ball just seems to pop up.
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: He can't hold on to it.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: He just lacks length.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: His passes get tipped.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: When you get that bad Baker game, it's hard to believe sometimes how he can look like.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: Because we know he's a good enough quarterback.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: Obviously, he's good enough to win with.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: He's not special, that's for sure.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: But that was a game where Tampa,
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: since he had to work for that game,
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: their defense, since he's defense actually got a gift.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, Baker handed them that game.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_00: And Burrow threw a pick six.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: So I guess what I'm saying is don't let that game fool you too much.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: I think Tampa has more in store.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: Baker can't play that poorly, obviously.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: And since he, I'm not sure that defense is better yet.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_01: Would you pay Baker Mayfield the contract that he received if you were the
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: GM of
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: a football team?
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: In the same exact predicament,
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: Jim Onis is general manager.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: He's Jason Light, your general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: Your quarterback makes it clear he wants to be in Tampa Bay.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: It got a little contentious there.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: Baker didn't hold back that press conference to start camp.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: And then right on the cusp of the 2026 season, three years, 165 million a year.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: You do the math.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: That's 55 million a year.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: 120 of the 165 is fully guaranteed.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_01: You would do it.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you have to.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: He's good enough.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: He is good enough that you can win with him.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: That's how we judge guys, whether they're a franchise quarterback and then that next level.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: Can we win with him?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that next level.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: We can win with him.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: If you don't have somebody else in mind, you got to pay him.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: If you don't have that next guy to replace him, you got to pay him.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: And he's good enough.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: They got to have a defense running game.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: They need all the same stuff.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: He's similar to Jared Goff.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: They just need help.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: They're good enough.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: They just need a lot of other things around them.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: Man, what a cat and mouse game too with these contract situations.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: Two very different where I get it in Houston.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: To me, in Houston, it's smart for both parties not to do anything.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: Why would you pay C.J.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_01: Stroud after what we just saw in the playoffs, right?
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: Like, you're going to pay him 60 million a year?
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know what he's asking for.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: There's all sorts of reports out there.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: And why would C.J.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Stroud want to negotiate off of that game, off of the last two seasons?
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: If you're C.J.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Stroud, go have the season of your life and ask for anything you possibly want.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: Was it, I don't know if it was Schefter or Rappaport floated the idea of like 70 million a year?
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: If he has this great season.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: So there's no deal done there.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: And then you got Baker Mayfield in Tampa where Tampa,
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: they theoretically could just play on your contract.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: We'll revisit it.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: Baker Mayfield could have said the same thing.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: I want more money.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: I'm going to wait.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they go at 55, three years, another short-termer.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: That's...
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_00: That's what the front office gets paid for.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_00: They have to have that discussion.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_00: Are we going to pay him or do we want to roll the dice and see who's out there next year?
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_00: Who could we get to replace him?
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_00: You weigh those options.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_00: If you think he's better than what the options are to replace him, got to sign him.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: Had him at six and two, looking like a Super Bowl contender.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: He was looking like an MVP front runner.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: And then everything went off the rails with his injuries, with the
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_01: team's injuries.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: Very discouraging start for both team and quarterback,
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_01: but they should put in the NFC South,
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_00: or at least, I don't know, shit.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, hold on.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_00: Tyler Shuck looked pretty good.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, so I've studied him.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_00: That's okay, good call.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: You can't just smirch the Saints anymore.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: No, no, he and Olave are real.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: That connection is legit.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_00: And Shuck is, he played a quality game, a lot of passes, too many passes.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_00: But I like the way Kellen Moore is playing with him.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: They have a plan.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: Even though it was 21-0, it didn't look 21-0 in that game.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: The Saints were down to Detroit.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: You could tell they were doing some things.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: They just weren't finishing drives and weren't capitalizing on some things.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_00: But that's a credit to them for staying the course, not panicking.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_00: They fought back, obviously had chances to win.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: But Kellen Moore is doing a good job with Shuck.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: That's that combo we're talking about.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: Owner, GM, head coach, quarterback.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: New Orleans is trending in that direction.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_00: I like what they're – they look good.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: Those two are unguardable right now.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, Shuck and Olave is unguardable.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: His routes are tough.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: His body control, his hands.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_00: And they're on the same page.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_00: And when you see that, that's natural.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, the Saints – and let me ask you this.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_00: Was it hard?
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: Not hard.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: Was it funny for you to see Mike Evans in the San Fran uniform?
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_00: I struggled with that.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: I kept thinking it didn't look right.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: It's funny.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: This morning – I don't know if it was ESPN or NFL Network,
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: had it on in the background, of course, right?
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: Still throwing that on in the background.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: And the bottom of the screen, they do their stardom, sit them for fantasy.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: Mike Evans popped up, and they still had the Buccaneers logo next to him.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_01: So I think it's weird for everybody.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's strange.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: I still think he's on there, yeah.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_00: But no, Shuck is real.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: He's good with the coach.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_00: They have a plan with him.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Kellen Moore, you
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: can tell.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's something there with him.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: Smart dude.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: And he's got the quarterback.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: And to think,
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: not too long ago,
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: it was a national emergency that the New Orleans Saints selected Tyler Shuck
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: over Shador Sanders.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_01: Let's not forget the uproar over that egregious decision to pass on Shador for
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_00: Tyler Shuck.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_00: The Browns should, I was thinking the Browns should just play each guy one quarter.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: Like do it like participation stuff.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_00: Like, hey,
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: you get the first,
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: you get the second,
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: Gabriel, you get the third, and then that rookie, Taylor Green, you get the four.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_00: They have four quarterbacks.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Each one gets a quarter.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_00: Let's have some fun with it.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: FCS Cleveland Browns.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: FCS.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: None of them.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_01: That's the stuff that we see like in Ella's summer soccer,
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: six and under, seven and under soccer.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_01: Equal playing time.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_01: Almost like we're evaluating.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they do the evaluate.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: We're evaluating to see what teams we're going to put you on, how we're going to place you.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Everybody gets a trophy.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Trophy, quarter.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: Participation.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: End of the day, they got four guys and none of them are good.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: They're sitting there and none of them are good enough.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: That's the end.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_01: Todd Munkin's got to stand there and defend him.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: Todd Culley.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: Bye.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_00: Todd Culley.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: There's no way he's lasting.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_00: I don't even know why he got the job.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_00: For this, probably.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_00: Just like Culley did.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: We need somebody to come in and take a bullet for a year.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_00: Give him a good, give him, pay him.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_00: Because what did Munkin do?
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: Lamar Jackson
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: won an MVP.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: Probably had something to do with that.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_00: Mars won an MVP with anybody, as we know.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_00: If you remember, we heard Brian Dable made Josh Allen, supposedly.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: I think we know how that turned out.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: I think that Dable did a lot of good.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: Those early stages.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_00: We talked about it.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: Those early stages when he was a 52% quarterback.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: Well, Mahomes, Allen,
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_01: all these quarterbacks would have willed themselves to the tier in which they- 100%.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_01: Occupy now, for sure.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: No, that's all.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_00: That's all it is.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_00: They all were going to be great no matter who's coaching them.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_00: Generationals.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_01: I just wonder why we even waste time talking about the Browns, thinking about the Browns.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: They aren't taking themselves seriously.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_01: Why should we?
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: No, we shouldn't.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_00: That's what I said.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_00: Each quarterback gets a quarterback.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: You didn't have to do this, right?
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: Like I get it.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: Jimmy Haslam is the overarching presence over it all,
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: but which by the way, check out the pod with Todd Haley and Jared Bailey.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: They were awesome.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: And Todd told the story of the 2018 draft and I get it.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: I know a lot of GMs and former coaches.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: It's like, I believe this, but he doesn't have any reason to lie.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: I don't think Todd Haley's lying when he says he would tell Jimmy Haslam every day.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: They got to get Josh Allen.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: And he said that Jimmy, he was a face talker.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: So he's like right in your face, like the old Seinfeld character.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_01: He's right there.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: And he'd tell him, Josh Allen, they didn't go Josh Allen.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_01: But they didn't have to, in terms of this offseason, this season, I get it.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_01: You're on the hook for all this money.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: You've restructured the money and whatever.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: It's more than a contractual albatross.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: It's an albatross of team morale.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: If you're a teammate and you see that you're trotting out these quarterbacks,
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: where's the hope, right?
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: Where's the will to fight?
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: And from the top down, the priority isn't winning.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: You're telling me there wasn't any other quarterback out there all offseason.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: Go to backup quarterback island.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Get yourself a Garoppolo, whatever.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_00: Kirk Cousins.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_00: They're always there.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_00: They're always there.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_00: Always ready.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: And maybe they weren't accused of sexual assault.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: That wouldn't hurt.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: The funny thing is, you do have a stadium to fill with fans.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: How many Deshaun Watson fans are in that stadium when they open up?
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: He might not be the starter week three for their home opener.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_00: I want the story.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_00: I feel like the owner has him.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_00: I feel like he's making him keep Shador Sanders too.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_00: I don't think they want him.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_00: So that seems owner driven as well because he's not good enough.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: No coach is playing quarterback that doesn't take being a captain seriously
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_00: or doesn't take every single day being serious.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: Like, especially Munkin.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: He's old school.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_00: He's not.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_00: There's no way he's into that.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: Now, production will equal.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_00: You know, if Shidwar comes in and makes plays, that's all good.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: But I've never seen it.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: I want to do this each week.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_01: So we're recording it Wednesday.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_01: I think there's enough.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_01: We're.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: We've got enough behind us, enough in front of us.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: I haven't really thought about the Week 2 matchups very closely, but that's okay.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you have either.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_01: Let's just rifle off straight up, not looking at spreads.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: Just tell me who's going to win the game.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_01: We'll go back and forth, all right?
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_00: All right, give me the game.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_01: Lions, Bills, Thursday night.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_00: Bills.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: Got to do it.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_00: I think they got to find, yeah, I think the Bills, they're just too loaded on offense right now.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_00: They look scary.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_01: Opening up the new stadium,
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_01: first chance for Joe Brady, Josh Allen, working concert together at home.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: It looked a little different to me.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_01: I'll just say that.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: He seemed a little more unleashed in some different ways.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: I think it's a good first sign for this partnership.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_00: Baltimore and Buffalo look pretty happy on offense.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, Carolina travels to Atlanta where Matt Ryan or Steve DeBerg may play quarterback.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to pick Atlanta.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: I have no clue who the quarterback is, but that's the NFL.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_00: They didn't play that bad.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_00: Their defense showed up.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_00: They made Pittsburgh work.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_00: That was a winnable game for Atlanta.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: I think they could sneak one out.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like Bajon Robinson to just take over this game as well.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_01: That's what he does.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_01: We saw what Chicago did on the ground running for a million yards.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: I think Bajon Robinson has himself a day.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_01: They're underdogs at home, by the way, two and a half.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_01: All right, Vikings are five and a half dogs traveling to Chicago.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: What do you got straight up?
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_00: I think the Bears win.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_00: That game is going to be a good one, though.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_00: Flores against Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_00: That's about as good as it gets right there.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_01: Punching Kyler Murray into the old search bar here.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: He's in concussion protocol.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_01: They're keeping it up in the air.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_01: It was really difficult to watch.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: Although I'm not really sure, Javon Bullard, what you do there.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: He's a violent player to begin with.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_01: Tyler Murray's keeping the play alive.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_01: I give Kevin O'Connell credit.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_01: He didn't fault the Packers for the hit.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_01: I tend to agree with him.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_01: Whether it's Kyler, whether it's Carson Wentz.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_01: I'm trusting Flores to cook something up in this one.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_01: I'm going Vikings in Chicago.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: I would definitely take the points.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_01: All right, this is a quick and painless one, I think.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: Eagles, Titans.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Eagles win, but yeah.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_00: That's one of those tricky,
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_00: ugly games for Philly where you just want to get in there and get that win.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: It's a scary trap game because they're banged up up front.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_00: Tennessee was embarrassing.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: They're going through it right now, so you might get Cam Ward just frustrates me.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: I don't understand it.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: The arm talent's there, but the rest of the play in the position is not right now.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: It's just no rhythm at all.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: Couldn't beat the Jets.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: Right, Philly.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: That was disappointing.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll go Eagles.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_01: Patriots are hosting the Steelers.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_00: I like Patriots.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_00: I think they get back on track.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: Pittsburgh has a long ways to go.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: I thought that offense would look more in sync.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: That was ugly.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: Did you catch Rodgers just bitching about all these calls after?
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_01: He doesn't care this year.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: No, he bitched about calls, receiver.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_00: It's anything.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it'll be fun.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll go Patriots as well.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_01: Packers at Jets.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, it better be the Packers.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: If they lose this game, the temperature will be cranked to decibels that we haven't.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: It hurt in quite some time.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll say Packers, but it
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: doesn't feel good.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_00: I'm with you.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: It doesn't feel good.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_01: It doesn't feel good.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: All right, Browns at Bucks.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_01: Bucks.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, come on, Tampa.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: Saints at Ravens.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_00: It's in Baltimore.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: I think Baltimore takes care of business, but they're in for one.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_00: They're in for one.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do like Jesse Minner against
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_01: a young quarterback, though.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_01: Let's remember, Detroit, they don't have Kirby Joseph.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_01: They didn't have Brian Branch.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_01: I like Shuck as much as you two.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: I think that they bring Shuck back to earth in this one defensively.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_01: Bengals at Texans.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: The Texans in a tricky spot where, I mean, you got Josh Allen.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: Now you got Joe Burrow.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_00: Burrow.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: Staring down the barrel of 0-2 here pretty quick.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_00: I'm going Houston.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_00: I think since he kind of had a game given to them by Tampa,
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_00: I think Houston's going to be a little bit frustrated.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: Their defense has got some pride.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_00: I like Houston.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_01: In the interest of being different, I'll go with the visitors.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: I'll go with Cincinnati.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_01: As much as I love that Houston defense,
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_01: they started a little slow last season from what I remember.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: Jags at Broncos.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: And the four o'clock slot, Empower Field.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: Can Bo Nix, Sean Payton, and the gang bounce back?
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_01: Jacksonville,
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: as we noted there,
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_01: Elkville Brewing Company, the forgotten contender, has gotten no love.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_00: They are making us look extremely crazy because they were lights out.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_00: But, yeah, I'm going to go Denver.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_00: Once again,
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: I'm going with these teams that got embarrassed,
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: thinking they have some pride and come back strong.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_01: I'm going to agree with you.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_01: As much as I like the Jags, I think there's too much pride there in Denver.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_01: They are.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_00: They find some solutions.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a good game.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_01: Raiders at Chargers.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_00: Man, I don't see much with the Chargers right now,
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: but you don't want to get caught up in things.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: But we already thought we know Herbert's the greatest quarterback to never do anything.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: I think the Raiders, that's a sneaky game for the Chargers.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: Have some fun.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: Take the Raiders.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_01: I can't see the Chargers losing this one.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_01: Granted, there's really no such thing as a home field advantage out there.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_01: Again, John Harbaugh.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, Jim Harbaugh.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_01: He's been around forever.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_01: I've had a hard time seeing him having two clunkers to start the season.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_01: Cardinals and Raiders.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_01: He can't lose to the Cardinals and the Raiders, right?
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_00: That's a tough start.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: That's a tough start.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_01: I like this one.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, Commanders at Cowboys.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: So the Cowboys,
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: all we heard about,
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_01: and we took that juicy bait,
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_01: that worm on the hook, hook, line,
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_01: and sinker with the Christian Parker-led defense,
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: the personnel, Will McClay, and the Giants just punched him in the mouth.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_01: So does Dallas bounce back at home against a Commanders team that was down big,
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_01: came back, made it a game, couldn't finish?
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_01: New coordinators, all that.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: I say yes.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_00: I think they find a way.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: I'm taking Dallas.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_00: I think they're good.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_00: I think these teams that laid an egg, I think they are good.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, the Cowboys didn't really lay an egg.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_00: They were starting to light up the Giants a little bit there.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_00: They were scoring.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: They just didn't get a lot of possessions.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_00: But I think Dallas bounces back.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: Too many weapons on that offense.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_00: And Dak's too good.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I want to say Dallas, too.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_01: But I still love Jaden Daniels.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_01: So for that reason and that reason alone,
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_01: and he may be my quarterback in fantasy football, we'll go with Jaden Daniels.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_01: Seattle at Arizona.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_00: I could take Arizona there.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_00: I think they could catch him.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_00: Back up court, Drew Locke's playing.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_00: Yep, I like Arizona to pull one off.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_00: The defending champs, though.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: The dark side.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_00: Backup quarterback.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_01: One quote is echoing in my head.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_01: I remember talking to T.C.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_01: McCartney about Drake May.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_01: He coached May his rookie year.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_01: Had some great insight into what makes him tick.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_01: And he had Drew Locke in Denver.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_01: And out of nowhere in our conversation...
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_01: Just starts going on and on about how he really loves Drew Locke's game.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_01: He's like, I don't know.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: He's good.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: He kind of broke down wide the way he sees the field.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_01: He's a gunslinger for a backup, which is kind of rare.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_01: No, he's a good one.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_01: He's a good backup.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_01: They've got, you know, basically they're coming off a bye week.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_01: I'm going to go Seattle.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_01: I think Seattle wins this easily.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_01: Miami travels to San Francisco.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, San Fran wins.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_01: Thirteen and a half points spread.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_00: That's what I said.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_00: That's two main points.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_00: I would take those points.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_01: But the Niners win.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: You hinted at this one, the Sunday night special, Colts at Chiefs.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: My upset special, Colts.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: To win it.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_00: They can run the ball, too.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_00: We need to see if Danny Jones can at least move around a little bit.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_00: That'll make me feel better about it, but.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_01: That would be concerning, right?
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_01: He didn't move at all.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_01: He was so stationary.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_00: No, and that's what makes him.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_00: If he's not running, he's...
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: I still like Kansas City.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: I'll go Kansas City there.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_01: And Monday night, top it off, the New York Giants travel to the LA Rams.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: There will obviously be more Giant fans in the house than Ram fans.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_01: The dream team could start 0-2 here.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_00: I like the dream.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_00: I'm going to take the Rams.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_00: I'm going to stick with my theme of guys that got embarrassed.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_00: I think they bounce back.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_01: It's a good theme because we do see it every year.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: There's the annual freakouts over this team or that quarterback losing or looking bad.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll trust the reigning MVP, Matthew Stafford.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: But it's not great when Miles Garrett's out.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_00: No, it certainly wouldn't shock any of us if the Giants pull this one off.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_00: If Dart plays like that and they can run the ball, tough.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: This was fun.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_01: Thanks a ton, Jim.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to do this all season long.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_01: This will be great.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_01: We have to do it in person, too.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_01: That was a great time at EBC.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_01: Anytime you want to come down to Ellicottville.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: Always.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_01: Southern tier.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_01: I got to get up there toward you.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_01: We'll bring it on the road here and there.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_01: We should invite folks out to hang out with us,
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_01: throw back a beer or three, and have some fun with this.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_01: Real football, long-time scout, exec, UFL mastermind right there, Jim Monas, Tyler Dunne here.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks for hanging out with us.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_01: Again, no ads, no sponsors.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_01: The only way that we can grow the show and Go Long in general is your ability,
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_01: your willingness to share with a friend.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_01: So please, I'll let your loved ones know about it if you're enjoying it.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_01: And we'll keep this thing going.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_01: This is season number seven for Go Long.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_01: And it's all because of you, our subscribers, our listeners, our readers.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you very, very much.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: We will catch you next week right here on Real Football.
