- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour. A man from Bonavista has been charged
- 0:09Speaker 2: after allegedly hitting speeds of up to 200 kilometers an
- 0:12Speaker 2: hour on the Trans-Canada Highway. RCMP clocked the 59-year-old at
- 0:17Speaker 2: twice the posted speed limit while he was racing eastbound
- 0:20Speaker 2: near Long Harbor around 11.30 Wednesday morning. His license was suspended,
- 0:25Speaker 2: his pickup was seized and impounded. Speeds of up to
- 0:29Speaker 2: 200 kilometers an hour mean that your vehicle is covering
- 0:32Speaker 2: more than 55 meters every second. Well, first BP exited
- 0:38Speaker 2: from the Newfoundland oil patch. Now Shell is picking up
- 0:41Speaker 2: the slack. Norway-based Equinor was left as the sole investor
- 0:45Speaker 2: in the deepwater field when BP pulled out. Equinor said
- 0:48Speaker 2: at the time that it would try to find another
- 0:51Speaker 2: partner for the $ 14 billion project.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It has.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Shell.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Has reached an agreement to buy 30% of the proposed
- 0:59Speaker 2: oil project, leaving Equinor as the majority stakeholder at 70%.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Equinor executive Philippe Mathieu says the new partnership will strengthen
- 1:09Speaker 2: the project as it moves toward the final investment decision
- 1:13Speaker 2: early next year. The lead company says Bay de Nord
- 1:16Speaker 2: could create thousands of jobs over the life of the
- 1:18Speaker 2: project and contribute $ 20 billion to governments. In other news.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Ready for your next adventure? Discover a thriving career and
- 1:28Speaker 3: lifestyle in Calgary, where big city opportunity meets Rocky Mountain living.
- 1:33Speaker 2: The Calgary Police Service is actively recruiting in the St.
- 1:36Speaker 2: John's area. That is a concern for the RNC Association.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You'll receive paid training, serve a community that values its
- 1:43Speaker 3: police officers.
- 1:45Speaker 2: RNCA President Staff Sergeant Mike Summers says officer recruitment and retention...
- 1:50Speaker 2: has been an issue right across the country, including in
- 1:53Speaker 2: Newfoundland and Labrador. He says the RNCA has been in
- 1:56Speaker 2: conversation with government for years about recruitment and retention and
- 2:01Speaker 2: removing barriers for cadets.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Calgary is looking at they pay their cadets to go
- 2:06Speaker 1: through the training. Our cadets receive a bursary, but we've
- 2:10Speaker 1: been in talks with government to try and remove some
- 2:12Speaker 1: of those barriers, like I said, and make it easier
- 2:14Speaker 1: for them, whether or not we start paying them right
- 2:16Speaker 1: from the get-go or whether or not we look after
- 2:19Speaker 1: their tuition, that sort of type thing. I think we
- 2:22Speaker 1: need to be out not only trying to recruit members
- 2:25Speaker 1: from this province, but also to get people from other
- 2:28Speaker 1: provinces to come here to Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 2:31Speaker 2: And three firefighters with St. John's Regional who sprang into
- 2:35Speaker 2: action when a colleague went into cardiac arrest at the
- 2:37Speaker 2: fire hall had been honored for their efforts at the
- 2:40Speaker 2: annual Firefighter of the Year Awards. On August 5th, Adam Vautour,
- 2:45Speaker 2: Brandon Snow, and Mark Vincent were all on duty at
- 2:48Speaker 2: the Goulds Station when Captain Patrick Sears suffered a cardiac arrest.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Without hesitation, all three men took immediate control, starting CPR,
- 2:57Speaker 2: pulling out the AED, and even administering oxygen. Those quick
- 3:02Speaker 2: actions saved Sears' life. That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
