- 0:28Welcome back, listeners to Sandman stories presents.
- 0:31A folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:33story. I'm your host Dustin today, we
- 0:36are back in the book of Yoruba folklore recorded by Mir Gumi
- 0:39Foo. In the first story, the main
- 0:42character learns that you need every part of your body to get
- 0:44ahead. And in the Second Story, a lazy
- 0:47old man, gets high to be able to see what his neighbors are up to
- 0:50but he loses everything to the ants.
- 0:54And in the final story Mighty Hunter uses magic to turn into a
- 0:57boa. But when a spell is broken, he
- 1:00might not be able to come back. Okay, let's begin.
- 1:05The head. There is a certain country where
- 1:09the inhabitants have heads but no bodies.
- 1:13The heads move about by jumping along the ground, but they never
- 1:16go very far one of the heads desired to see the world.
- 1:20So we set out one morning secretly, when he had gone some
- 1:23distance, he saw an old woman looking out of the door of a
- 1:26Hut. And he asked her, if she would
- 1:28kindly lent him a body, The old woman willingly.
- 1:32Lent him the body of her slave in the head thanked, her and
- 1:35went on his way. Later he came upon a young man
- 1:39sleeping under a tree and asked him.
- 1:41If he would kindly lent him a pair of arms as he did not
- 1:43appear to be using them. The young man agreed and the
- 1:47head thanked him and went on his way.
- 1:51Later still, he reached a river bank or Fisherman's Hat singing,
- 1:54amending their cone shape, net. The head asked, if any one of
- 1:58them would let him a pair of legs as they were all sitting
- 2:01and not walking one of the fishermen agreed and the head
- 2:05thanked him and went on his way, but now he had legs arms and a
- 2:09body and so appeared like any other man.
- 2:14In the evening, he reached to town where he saw a maiden's
- 2:16dancing while the onlookers threw coins to those, they
- 2:19favored. The head through all his coins
- 2:22to one of the dancers and she's so much admired, his handsome
- 2:25form that she consented to marry him and go to live with him in
- 2:28his own country. Next day they set out but when
- 2:34they came to the river bank, the stranger took off his legs and
- 2:36gave them back to the fisherman. Later they reached the young man
- 2:40who still lay sleeping under the tree and to him, the head gave
- 2:44him back his arms. Finally, they came to the
- 2:47cottage where the old woman stood watching and here the
- 2:50stranger gave up his body. When the bride saw that her
- 2:55husband was merely ahead. She was filled with horror and
- 2:58she ran away as fast as she could go.
- 3:01Now, that the head had neither body arms nor legs, he could not
- 3:05overtake her and so lost her forever.
- 3:09The end. Okay.
- 3:29And Story number 20, lay and the Ants.
- 3:34There was a certain lazy and disagreeable, man, whom
- 3:36everybody called Olay or lazy one.
- 3:40He liked to profit by the work of others and was also very
- 3:43inquisitive about other people's affairs.
- 3:47Once he saw that, the ants had begun building a pillar in the
- 3:50compound of his house, but though the ants destroyed all
- 3:53the plants in the compound and stripped all the trees, well,
- 3:56they would not trouble to kill them or to break down their
- 3:59pillar. Instead he thought to himself
- 4:03when the ants have made this pillar very high, I will sit on
- 4:05top of it and then I should be able to see all that my
- 4:09neighbors are doing without leaving my compound.
- 4:13This thought, pleased him and he was glad that the ants swarmed
- 4:16in his compound, each day, their pillar grew higher and at last
- 4:21the ants ceased their building and began again elsewhere.
- 4:25Only then climbed up onto the pillar and spent the whole day,
- 4:27observing the doings of his neighbor's and laughing at their
- 4:30activity. Here.
- 4:33I sit like a great Chief and I see all things sang Olay.
- 4:38But while he sat on the pillar, the ants began to demolish his
- 4:41house in all that, it contained in a short time there was
- 4:45nothing left of all of his food and possessions.
- 4:49Olay, thus became the laughingstock of the village and
- 4:52everyone who song cried kui Juco or greetings to you on your
- 4:56sitting. Soon afterwards, he died.
- 5:00And it is not known to this day whether he died of shame or of
- 5:03laziness. The end.
- 5:37Okay. And Story.
- 5:38Number 3, the boa constrictor. Alguna Manera the famous Hunter
- 5:44live to such a great age that he was no longer able to go into
- 5:47the forest and Chase the deer in the leopard.
- 5:50Life had no pleasure for him other than hunting.
- 5:53So we went to a magician and ask for some charm which would
- 5:56enable him to in continuous occupation.
- 6:00The magician gave him two pots. Each container charm.
- 6:05Every day, okuni era dipped his head into the first pot and was
- 6:09at once transformed into a boa constrictor in which form, he
- 6:13glided into the forest and hunted to his heart's content at
- 6:17night. He returned and dipped his head
- 6:19into the second pot and so became a man, again.
- 6:23This went on for a long time without the knowledge of the old
- 6:26Hunters family but when At Last I chance to discover the secret,
- 6:30they were filled with horror and his son in a rage kicked at the
- 6:33pots and overturn them both. Oh goon was at that moment
- 6:38hunting in the forest and when he returned to his house found
- 6:42the magic pots overturned an empty.
- 6:44He was filled with dismay for he had no means of regaining his
- 6:47human form for some days. The boa constrictor glided about
- 6:51near the house, seeking for a few drops of the charm.
- 6:54But in vain and at last, he disappeared into the forest and
- 6:58was never seen by his family again.
- 7:01The end. I really enjoyed the first
- 7:31story, the most, it reminds me of a long joke.
- 7:33I heard a few times in my family but a guy that is just ahead,
- 7:37then he turns into a grape and a squash.
- 7:38And so the punchline is he should have stopped while he was
- 7:41ahead. The Second Story, I think would
- 7:44be a great Illustrated story seeing the old man, get higher
- 7:47and higher on the big pile in the middle.
- 7:49While The Termites Ate Everything, it would just be an
- 7:52excellent visual for that story. And the third story is a cool.
- 7:57This is how bows were made style story.
- 8:00Logan has a lot of meanings, and so I'd have to ask someone who
- 8:03knows the nuances of the story to properly translated.
- 8:06I hope you enjoyed these stories as much as I did, there's only
- 8:0917 stories left which translates to about six more episodes after
- 8:14I finish this book, I'll start a new one from the same region to
- 8:17keep Africa represented. And the podcast shout out is to
- 8:21Tibet folklore. It's not a folklore podcast but
- 8:23rather just a Twitter user. It is posting Tibetan folklore
- 8:27for all to see Seriously, just go check them out.
- 8:30They are just at Tibet, folklore on Twitter and go read their
- 8:35stories. And my listener, shout-out goes
- 8:39to the capital of Colombia. Bogota d.c.
- 8:43Nicknamed, the Athens of South America.
- 8:46The city was first settled by the muisca people who may have
- 8:48named it moist Kita. Meaning the Walling of the
- 8:52farmland, It was later colonized by the Spanish, which is the
- 8:56majority language in the area. Although there is a school now
- 9:00teaching classes in chicha It looks like a beautiful place and
- 9:05I would really like to see the altiplano.
- 9:08So if I get a chance, I'd love to go there.
- 9:11And so to my listener in, Bogota I say, gracias, Edwin is noches.
