Latest / Seattle Kraken Audio Network / KRAKEN WEEKLY: Immediate reaction to Ron Francis stepping down, outlook with 5 games left (4/8)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, we could have to go a little bit
- 0:02Speaker 1: less than that may be here for the regular season,
- 0:04Speaker 1: we're gonna talk more about how we got here to
- 0:06Speaker 1: this place before we get to Ewa Fitzhu and al Kiniski.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We're gonna go ahead and peel back a little bit
- 0:11Speaker 1: on the curtain from this show. We tend to pre
- 0:14Speaker 1: record this, so a lot of the conversation that you'll
- 0:16Speaker 1: be hearing as a course from the greater scope of
- 0:19Speaker 1: what happened over this last week. Some talk as well
- 0:22Speaker 1: for the future. But earlier today it was announced a
- 0:25Speaker 1: little past four pm that Ron Francis, who had been
- 0:28Speaker 1: a part of the Seattle Cracking before they even had
- 0:31Speaker 1: a name way back on July seventeen, twenty nineteen, named
- 0:35Speaker 1: as GM, he will be stepping down at the end
- 0:38Speaker 1: of the season as a team's president of hockey Operations,
- 0:43Speaker 1: opening a door that could lead to a massive change
- 0:47Speaker 1: here for the future, potentially. Ian Fornesh joins us right
- 0:51Speaker 1: now for the KRACK and Hockey Network also heard one
- 0:53Speaker 1: to three week days ninety three to three KJARFM. Ian
- 0:57Speaker 1: I can't think of an executive that I've worked with
- 1:00Speaker 1: who was as classy as Ron, who was I think
- 1:03Speaker 1: forthcoming as Ron and someone who laid down a very
- 1:07Speaker 1: very important piece of the foundation here for this franchise.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But this was a massive wow that we got here
- 1:15Speaker 1: for this afternoon as he transitions on from what has
- 1:19Speaker 1: been a season of disappointment, but yet a lot too unpack,
- 1:23Speaker 1: maybe as far as the path of where the Kraken
- 1:26Speaker 1: go from here. Ian your initial reaction on this, I'm
- 1:29Speaker 1: not surprised.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'm not surprised. I thought, I think his contract was
- 1:35Speaker 2: coming up this year anyway, after five years, so I
- 1:37Speaker 2: wasn't surprised necessarily. I thought this might happen anyway.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean Ron is in a different role than he
- 1:42Speaker 2: was when he started. He you know, he wasn't he
- 1:45Speaker 2: was no longer really running the hockey day to day,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think much to you know, a lot of people
- 1:50Speaker 2: didn't realize that, but Ron was not running the teams.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Jason Bottle's team has been Jason Boderle's team for a while.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Ron was more of a kind of a figurehead, a scout,
- 1:58Speaker 2: helping some of the young guys and you know, and
- 2:00Speaker 2: so forth. So I'm not real surprised. I think this
- 2:04Speaker 2: question is this lead to more changes in the hockey
- 2:06Speaker 2: ops department.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Drafting, developing, analytics, these things usually are on the
- 2:11Speaker 1: table when it comes to a time like this. But
- 2:13Speaker 1: Crack and CEO Todd Liwiki, we're told, will be talking
- 2:16Speaker 1: to the media tomorrow morning, nine thirty at Climate Pledge Arena.
- 2:20Speaker 1: This also will lead to the concept of direction, whether
- 2:23Speaker 1: you want to keep leaning in and going for it
- 2:25Speaker 1: adding veteran pieces, or does this now pave the way
- 2:28Speaker 1: for youth to be served here long term for the Kraken.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I wish I knew, Mikey, but I just
- 2:36Speaker 2: think this might be the first of many steps. If
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'm being honest, I think this might be the first
- 2:40Speaker 2: of many changes. I think Lane Lambert is and should
- 2:43Speaker 2: be safe, but I think outside of that then who
- 2:45Speaker 2: knows what else could happen?
- 2:46Speaker 1: All right, Well, looking forward to hearing more of this
- 2:49Speaker 1: for your reaction Ian tomorrow one to three as well.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But to appreciate your time. But thank you, thanks Mike,
- 2:54Speaker 1: Mike Benton, Everett Fitsu who is back also for this week,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I Fitz, welcome back out Canski as well along here
- 3:01Speaker 1: for the ride for all of us. For this next hour,
- 3:04Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking with Jake con Also later on
- 3:07Speaker 1: the host of Sirius XM The Point co host matter
- 3:10Speaker 1: of Fact with Victoria Matty Ash will go over surprises
- 3:13Speaker 1: in the East in the West direction for the Kraken
- 3:16Speaker 1: after this season is over and much much much more.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Jacn gonna be with us here in just a little bit.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Last four games here for the Kraken, Let's just say
- 3:27Speaker 1: it could have gone a lot better. Six to two
- 3:29Speaker 1: loss at Utah, brief two game homestand closing four to
- 3:33Speaker 1: two loss against Chicago six to two loss then at
- 3:37Speaker 1: Winnipeg Monday night, five to two loss at Minnesota last
- 3:42Speaker 1: night to close out a brief two game road swing.
- 3:47Speaker 1: As usual, fellas, we'll begin here with the opening thoughts,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and I will go here first up by just laying
- 3:54Speaker 1: this out as how Koniski says, we're just gonna call
- 3:56Speaker 1: balls and strikes here on this one. The Krackner of
- 4:00Speaker 1: officially on the brink of elimination nine points that with
- 4:03Speaker 1: five games left now.
- 4:04Speaker 4: In the regular season, how we got here.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Was a disappointing mix, either at the same time or
- 4:11Speaker 1: in spurts of energy, emotion, finish, or even just flat
- 4:16Speaker 1: out resolve. It's pretty apparent. Lane Lambert got sick and
- 4:20Speaker 1: tired of this once and for all in last night's
- 4:24Speaker 1: news conference.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And here's more with Lane Lambert.
- 4:27Speaker 5: I sit here and it's another loss, and it's a
- 4:29Speaker 5: five to two loss and another empty net goal against.
- 4:32Speaker 5: And I sit here and I say, I thought we
- 4:34Speaker 5: played a pretty good hockey game. And it's like, really,
- 4:38Speaker 5: you do, another loss. But I do actually think we
- 4:42Speaker 5: played pretty good tonight. We have a chance to them,
- 4:47Speaker 5: you know, and we just can't get out of our
- 4:50Speaker 5: own way. We make mistakes that are inexcusable, and it's
- 4:59Speaker 5: you know, that disallowed goals that we're getting take momentum
- 5:04Speaker 5: away from us, especially when we're fragile, you know. So
- 5:09Speaker 5: I mean we want, we want our guys going to
- 5:11Speaker 5: the net. Freddy does a good job going to the net.
- 5:14Speaker 5: We make a good play. But regardless of that, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 5: we can't we can't turn the puck over at the
- 5:21Speaker 5: start of the second period. We have a protocol on
- 5:24Speaker 5: that rush. There's no way that that guy should be
- 5:27Speaker 5: alone in front of the net.
- 5:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:30Speaker 5: The fourth goal, Mark Shahans standing off to the backside
- 5:35Speaker 5: by himself. It's it's things that that have to change.
- 5:41Speaker 5: And you know there will be a lot of a
- 5:43Speaker 5: lot of soul searching.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Why do you think those mistakes have happened?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Is it just something? Do you think it's like a
- 5:48Speaker 1: fatigue thing, like a mental fatigue thing.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Is it, you know, like a skill thing?
- 5:52Speaker 3: Like what do you kind of point to there? Ah,
- 5:56Speaker 3: I'm going to pass on that question.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Discipline, accountability or hallmarks of a Laine Lambert team. Strength
- 6:03Speaker 1: is a part of a Lane Lambert team. This is
- 6:06Speaker 1: a coach who has tried everything from benching veterans to
- 6:10Speaker 1: take it away ice time, to blending line combinations, to
- 6:13Speaker 1: blending power play units, to even blending defensive pairings. Ultimately,
- 6:19Speaker 1: it comes down to the willingness and the focus to
- 6:21Speaker 1: make the right play at the right time, to not
- 6:23Speaker 1: overplay a two on one, to leave the inside of
- 6:26Speaker 1: the rink uncovered, to not overthink the extra play, to
- 6:31Speaker 1: not let slumping body language take over when things go wrong,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and too many times a crack can have failed to
- 6:38Speaker 1: adapt since the Olympic break in those categories and what's
- 6:43Speaker 1: now ongoing as a five thirteen and two records since
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Olympic break tells me there's a deeper rooted issue here.
- 6:51Speaker 1: This is one hundred percent not a coaching issue, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: I feel we're about a few weeks away from words
- 6:58Speaker 1: going into action on what the next course should be
- 7:01Speaker 1: to fix this once and for all. Do you want
- 7:04Speaker 1: to overhaul the roster with talent upgrades? It will take work,
- 7:07Speaker 1: but it's possible. Do you want to overhaul the roster
- 7:10Speaker 1: to let UFAs move on and let the kids play?
- 7:14Speaker 1: It's possible. And I think a large chunk of fans
- 7:17Speaker 1: around here understand this move because it is for the
- 7:20Speaker 1: greater good.
- 7:22Speaker 4: But I think we know.
- 7:23Speaker 1: What's starting at the credit now, staring at the Kraken
- 7:26Speaker 1: right in the face, and it's fate and it's hard
- 7:29Speaker 1: to take right now. But I mean if this force
- 7:31Speaker 1: has changed, and change is good because this is a diehard,
- 7:36Speaker 1: passionate sports town who wants their pro sports teams to
- 7:39Speaker 1: succeed with direction, passion, and emotion. Nash, that was done
- 7:46Speaker 1: here fellas your opening thoughts, take it away?
- 7:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, you know, it's it's frustrating, rights, it's frustrating,
- 7:55Speaker 7: it's annoying, it sucks, it's all of that.
- 7:58Speaker 3: You know, this was a very promise start to the season.
- 8:02Speaker 7: You can understand Lane Lambert's frustration because you know, on
- 8:07Speaker 7: one hand, you were three points coming out of the
- 8:10Speaker 7: break out of first place in your division. You've been
- 8:14Speaker 7: going through some injury issues, you'd had a lot of
- 8:16Speaker 7: man games lost, so you were able to get guys healthy,
- 8:20Speaker 7: and then you just weren't able to recapture some of
- 8:23Speaker 7: that magic that you had in the first half of
- 8:28Speaker 7: the season. And you're right, I don't think it's coaching.
- 8:30Speaker 7: We've seen the system work, you know. I you don't
- 8:35Speaker 7: want to ever call out players, but I do think that,
- 8:39Speaker 7: like Lane said, there's got to be some soul searching.
- 8:42Speaker 7: This isn't anything that hasn't been said before. This team
- 8:45Speaker 7: somehow has forgotten to do the things that don't require talent.
- 8:50Speaker 7: They're getting beat to easy puck battles and corners, they're
- 8:53Speaker 7: getting beat through neutral zone. They're not you know, crashing
- 8:57Speaker 7: the net. They're not shooting. You know, Lane Lambert said
- 8:59Speaker 7: to us the other day in our pregame conversation that
- 9:02Speaker 7: the defensive side of the puck was winning this team
- 9:06Speaker 7: games in the first half of the year.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Now it's losing games.
- 9:10Speaker 7: The Kraken peaked this year at fifth overall in goals
- 9:14Speaker 7: against they were in the top twelve, top third of
- 9:17Speaker 7: the NHL and goals against for the bulk of the season,
- 9:20Speaker 7: and then now they're barely above twenty fifth and barring
- 9:24Speaker 7: you know, five shutouts. So here, over the next five games,
- 9:27Speaker 7: I mean, Seattle is going to finish in the bottom
- 9:30Speaker 7: you know, ten percent of the league, bottom fifteen percent
- 9:34Speaker 7: of the league and in goals against. So there was
- 9:37Speaker 7: just a huge dropoff from where this team was to
- 9:41Speaker 7: where this team is now. But for as dum and
- 9:45Speaker 7: gloom as everything is, I mean, I'm going to go
- 9:46Speaker 7: back to saying what I've been saying all year. If
- 9:49Speaker 7: you look at this team's bottom basement, you know, the
- 9:53Speaker 7: bottom of the barrel baseline goal for this team, you
- 9:56Speaker 7: achieved it. You were in a playoff spot until games seventy. Hell,
- 10:01Speaker 7: we're in game seventy eight and the cracking technically have
- 10:04Speaker 7: not been eliminated going into tomorrow night against Vegas. So
- 10:07Speaker 7: here you are, with five games left in the regular season.
- 10:11Speaker 7: For all intents and purposes, you're still in a playoff race.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Game sixty five, Game seventy mattered. I mean, the kra
- 10:19Speaker 7: can you know, spent one hundred and seventeen days in
- 10:21Speaker 7: a playoff spot this season, each of the last two years,
- 10:26Speaker 7: or each of the last three years. Rather, the Crack
- 10:29Speaker 7: can have spent nine days each season.
- 10:32Speaker 3: In a playoff spot.
- 10:33Speaker 7: So outside of year two, and outside of this year,
- 10:36Speaker 7: year one, year three, and year four, the Crack and
- 10:39Speaker 7: have spent a total of twenty seven combined days.
- 10:42Speaker 3: In a playoff spot.
- 10:43Speaker 7: So, yes, it stinks right now, but I think we're
- 10:48Speaker 7: gonna look back here in July when we're going into
- 10:51Speaker 7: free agency, when we're meeting again at CASEI for development
- 10:55Speaker 7: rookie camp, and we're gonna say to ourselves, you know what, Yeah,
- 10:58Speaker 7: that ending wasn't good, but man, considering where this team was,
- 11:01Speaker 7: it felt good to be playing meaningful games.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It does going into to the Easter weekend.
- 11:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I agree with everything he said.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Fits.
- 11:10Speaker 8: I was looking at some stats this morning, and you know,
- 11:13Speaker 8: the Kraken finished twenty seventh overall in the league last year.
- 11:17Speaker 8: They're currently at twenty eighth with five games remaining. So
- 11:21Speaker 8: it remains to be seen if this team's going to
- 11:23Speaker 8: finish higher or lower than where they were last year, which,
- 11:26Speaker 8: if you asked me a couple of months ago at
- 11:28Speaker 8: game fifty six, right before the break when they were,
- 11:32Speaker 8: like you said, a few points out of that first place.
- 11:34Speaker 8: I thought no way to ever get anywhere near that level.
- 11:38Speaker 8: And here we are two months later and things have
- 11:42Speaker 8: fallen off. I think that the why is the natural
- 11:45Speaker 8: question that everybody wants to ask us, wants to ask
- 11:48Speaker 8: the team. It's no one thing, But I'll say what
- 11:53Speaker 8: I've said all along, which is this Lane Lambert structure
- 11:57Speaker 8: is a difficult game to play. That doesn't mean that
- 12:01Speaker 8: that's an excuse. It just is it's a difficult game
- 12:03Speaker 8: to play, and you need people on this roster that
- 12:06Speaker 8: are going to commit to it for eighty two games
- 12:09Speaker 8: and play it night in and night out. If they don't,
- 12:12Speaker 8: that's when you start to see games get away. That's
- 12:14Speaker 8: where you start to see goals against start to skeoch
- 12:17Speaker 8: up from two to three to four, to five to six.
- 12:19Speaker 8: And this team can't compete as easily when you're getting
- 12:24Speaker 8: scored on four or five and six as they can
- 12:26Speaker 8: win it two, three and four. And this, this structure,
- 12:29Speaker 8: when played right, allows allows for that. So it's difficult,
- 12:34Speaker 8: and you know you need all twenty guys playing this system.
- 12:38Speaker 8: You can have nights where you know, three or four
- 12:41Speaker 8: guys take the night off and say I can't play
- 12:43Speaker 8: this system today. I got to back off because those
- 12:46Speaker 8: are games you're going to lose, and the bigger that
- 12:48Speaker 8: number gets, the bigger you lose by. And I think
- 12:51Speaker 8: in the first let's call it the three first. You know,
- 12:54Speaker 8: almost seventy percent of the season, this team played that
- 12:57Speaker 8: way more games than they didn't, so no surprise they
- 13:00Speaker 8: were sitting in that third spot prior to the Olympic break.
- 13:03Speaker 1: One of my favorite, yeah, one of my favorite sayings
- 13:07Speaker 1: when it comes to the scenario of times getting tough,
- 13:10Speaker 1: came from now Ottawa Senator's broadcaster Jamie Baker. You used
- 13:15Speaker 1: to play for Quebec San Jose Sharks, scored one of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the most famous goals in Shark's history, then became a
- 13:20Speaker 1: Sharks broadcaster for a long long time, and it was
- 13:23Speaker 1: when times get tough, are you driven or are you motivated?
- 13:28Speaker 1: And then I think, to me, is a focus here
- 13:30Speaker 1: for the last five games of this regular season. But
- 13:33Speaker 1: I think in connection to that, since the Olympic break,
- 13:36Speaker 1: eighty one goals allowed average four goals per game, power
- 13:40Speaker 1: play is five of fifty four. And then the penalty
- 13:44Speaker 1: kill issues, which reared its ugly head at Winnipeg on
- 13:47Speaker 1: Monday night. What do these last five games mean to you,
- 13:52Speaker 1: either from the emotional standpoint or the numerical standpoint.
- 13:57Speaker 8: I think from an emotional standpoint it means more. Yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 8: you'd like to see this team go five and zero
- 14:03Speaker 8: for the for the last five and again until there's
- 14:07Speaker 8: an innix to your in your name. You've got to
- 14:08Speaker 8: play it like like like there's a chance. So you'd
- 14:12Speaker 8: love to see that. But I think more so I'd
- 14:15Speaker 8: like to see five games that have a lot of
- 14:17Speaker 8: emotion behind them that you know, uh, you recommit to
- 14:21Speaker 8: the system that Lane has put in place. You you
- 14:24Speaker 8: have that never quit mentality. You certainly don't want to
- 14:27Speaker 8: get pushed around these last five games. You want to
- 14:29Speaker 8: you want to leave these least five teams that you're
- 14:32Speaker 8: gonna play knowing that, regardless of what the standings say,
- 14:37Speaker 8: this cracking team is not a team that's gonna.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Be uh, that's gonna be pushed around, that's going to
- 14:41Speaker 3: be beat up.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Part of the changing go ahead everyett Sorry bout that
- 14:44Speaker 4: go ahead.
- 14:45Speaker 7: No, I was gonna say, I think Al's spot on,
- 14:48Speaker 7: but I'm gonna go even further than that, I think
- 14:51Speaker 7: these last five games, from an individual standpoint, each player
- 14:55Speaker 7: needs to find what makes them tick. Because this is
- 15:00Speaker 7: an audition for spots next year for the UFAs.
- 15:06Speaker 3: On the team.
- 15:07Speaker 7: This is an audition for other teams for potential trade
- 15:11Speaker 7: chips on the roster. Let's not forget there are probably
- 15:15Speaker 7: four or five guys on this current roster who got
- 15:17Speaker 7: years left on their contract that other teams may be
- 15:20Speaker 7: snooping around on, and this is an opportunity for them
- 15:23Speaker 7: to also put on a show. But I think just
- 15:26Speaker 7: for for athletes' sake, I mean, this is your job, right,
- 15:30Speaker 7: you were paid a lot of money to do this job.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And didn't Lane Lambert bring up the word professionalism earlier
- 15:37Speaker 1: on the road, trapalism?
- 15:38Speaker 7: He did, right, the three of us, everybody up here
- 15:41Speaker 7: on this press bridge, we take pride in our jobs, Okay,
- 15:45Speaker 7: And I'm not saying I'm not saying these guys don't
- 15:48Speaker 7: take pride in their jobs.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Clearly they do, otherwise they won't be here.
- 15:52Speaker 7: But they need to show that, you know what, just
- 15:55Speaker 7: because we've fallen on hard times three twelve and two
- 15:59Speaker 7: in their last seventeen games, Just because we've fallen on
- 16:03Speaker 7: hard times does not mean that we're gonna roll over
- 16:06Speaker 7: and die. And I think, yes, you want to win
- 16:09Speaker 7: these games, but.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I'm with al.
- 16:11Speaker 7: If you go zero to five, but you're losing these
- 16:14Speaker 7: games five to four to shootout. If you're losing these
- 16:16Speaker 7: games five to four in overtime, you know what, we
- 16:19Speaker 7: had something We went down swinging, and I think that's
- 16:22Speaker 7: more of an individual thing because the system's there. The
- 16:25Speaker 7: system hasn't changed, The power play structure hasn't changed, the
- 16:28Speaker 7: defense hasn't changed, the breakouts haven't changed. Nothing has changed
- 16:32Speaker 7: since day one of camp in September.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:35Speaker 7: The personnel largely hasn't changed. You brought in Bobby McMahon.
- 16:38Speaker 7: You had a couple of guys who were out to injury.
- 16:40Speaker 7: But for the most part, this group has been together
- 16:43Speaker 7: since you know, before Halloween, right, This.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Gu's been because since September.
- 16:48Speaker 7: Yeah, So I think individually this means about as much.
- 16:54Speaker 7: A strong finish means as much for them in that
- 16:57Speaker 7: dressing room as it does for the entire organization.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Philip Grubauer left the Winnipeg game lower body injury, and
- 17:06Speaker 1: it appeared that he tweaked something off the play off.
- 17:09Speaker 1: The pocket was mysterious here to us, but Lane Lambert
- 17:13Speaker 1: offering no definitive as far as a return for him.
- 17:15Speaker 1: But now there's only five games left here for the
- 17:17Speaker 1: regular season. He would hope that Philip Grubauer gets a
- 17:20Speaker 1: chance to get right back in there at least one
- 17:22Speaker 1: more time. For the season he's had. It has been terrific.
- 17:25Speaker 1: It has been a turnaround type of year. And I
- 17:27Speaker 1: would argue in the running here for the Pete Muldoon
- 17:30Speaker 1: Award for Team MVP just based on how well he
- 17:33Speaker 1: has played for this entire season. But there is one
- 17:36Speaker 1: more back to back, so if he can't go, that
- 17:39Speaker 1: could potentially mean Matt Murray time for the first time
- 17:42Speaker 1: since November here. But what do we make out of
- 17:45Speaker 1: the situation? And what did we make also at a
- 17:47Speaker 1: joy to cord Press into duty in Winnipeg to mop
- 17:52Speaker 1: up and then full game against Minnesota.
- 17:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, it would be nice to get Grubauer,
- 17:58Speaker 7: you know, back, minimally one more game here on this
- 18:00Speaker 7: home stand, just so we can get get some more
- 18:03Speaker 7: groos going into the offseason. You know, for the year
- 18:07Speaker 7: that he he's had. He deserves it, He's earned it.
- 18:10Speaker 7: I'm with you, partner. I mean, I think Mike Pete Muldoon,
- 18:15Speaker 7: I feel like it's got to be his to lose again.
- 18:19Speaker 7: You know, my my, my definition of MVP, who's the
- 18:23Speaker 7: most valuable to your team? And I'd argue that without
- 18:26Speaker 7: Philip Grubauer and the resurgence that he had this season,
- 18:30Speaker 7: we're not sitting here talking about playoffs even being a
- 18:33Speaker 7: remote possibility. So but yeah, you know, I think anytime
- 18:37Speaker 7: a goalie comes in cold. Joey Decord, you know, did
- 18:40Speaker 7: as best job as he could in in Winnipeg. And
- 18:44Speaker 7: I think that the goals that were scored in my
- 18:46Speaker 7: in Minnesota. You know, I don't know if man everywhere
- 18:50Speaker 7: were his fault. You know, you had the one that
- 18:52Speaker 7: was the up high stick.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Check deflection goal.
- 18:57Speaker 7: You had Marcus Johansson wide open on the back door
- 19:00Speaker 7: because of a blown assignment. He had another scramble out
- 19:04Speaker 7: in front where he was doing what he could do,
- 19:07Speaker 7: you know what I mean. So it's not like he
- 19:09Speaker 7: was beat clean on any of these goals. And again
- 19:12Speaker 7: we go back to the last handful of games. How
- 19:14Speaker 7: many of these goals?
- 19:15Speaker 3: And maybe Al you can answer this question better than
- 19:18Speaker 3: I can.
- 19:18Speaker 7: How many of these goals do you think cracking. Goaltending
- 19:22Speaker 7: was beat clean on. I mean, I can't remember looking
- 19:25Speaker 7: at you saying he should have had that one. And
- 19:27Speaker 7: I feel like we're talking again defensive breakdowns, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 7: making these mistakes you should be making. I'm not going
- 19:33Speaker 7: to sit here and blame goaltending for the recent struggles.
- 19:36Speaker 7: I think it is just a systematic defensive breakdown that
- 19:39Speaker 7: we've been seeing time and time again from the guys
- 19:41Speaker 7: on the ice. But you know, Decord did did his job,
- 19:45Speaker 7: he did what he could do, kept the team in
- 19:46Speaker 7: the game, and unfortunately they couldn't pull it up for him.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Well, you know, you make the point about soft goals,
- 19:52Speaker 8: There just weren't many of them, you know, in recent past.
- 19:56Speaker 8: And you know, you and I and Mike have talked
- 19:58Speaker 8: a lot about the second periods over the last ten
- 20:00Speaker 8: games to dash thirteen goal differential, a lot of probably
- 20:04Speaker 8: almost half of those coming on the power play. The
- 20:07Speaker 8: thing about goaltanding is is that you have to have
- 20:09Speaker 8: trust in the players around you. You have to have
- 20:11Speaker 8: trust that you know, on a two one one you're
- 20:14Speaker 8: going to take away that pass. I got the shot
- 20:16Speaker 8: as the goal, You've got to take away that pass.
- 20:18Speaker 8: And if you let that pass go through and he's
- 20:20Speaker 8: got a one timer in an open net. Hey, we
- 20:22Speaker 8: had assignments. I didn't blow, mind, you blew yours, And
- 20:25Speaker 8: I think too many times to your point, it's the
- 20:28Speaker 8: guys in front of them that were blowing their assignments
- 20:30Speaker 8: that allows a guy like Marcus Johnson to stay on
- 20:33Speaker 8: the back door and and get a feed cross ice
- 20:35Speaker 8: into an open net. So too many times that's been
- 20:38Speaker 8: happening since the Olympic break, and that's why the goals
- 20:41Speaker 8: against are up, that's why the save percentages are down,
- 20:44Speaker 8: and that's why obviously there have been a lot more
- 20:46Speaker 8: losses than this team would like to see. So yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 8: I point to a lot of that.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Before we get to break, we're going to also bring
- 20:54Speaker 1: up the issue here at the penalty kill, and it's
- 20:55Speaker 1: been ongoing for virtually the entire year.
- 20:58Speaker 4: But we've learned a.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Course in the NHL as a baseline, especially in crunch
- 21:02Speaker 1: time and definitely playoff time. If you've got good goaltending,
- 21:07Speaker 1: you're on the right path. If you have great penalty killing,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you're on the right path as well. The goaltending has
- 21:12Speaker 1: been there, the penalty kill has not been way off
- 21:15Speaker 1: the tracks. This season, near the bottom of the NHL
- 21:18Speaker 1: for the entire year, and going back now for this
- 21:22Speaker 1: last stretch to the Olympic, break the crack and allowing
- 21:25Speaker 1: thirteen power play goals in forty eight opportunities as well.
- 21:29Speaker 1: So I think part of this direction for this offseason
- 21:33Speaker 1: when you want to consider the shaping of the roster
- 21:35Speaker 1: if they go that route, is not just from a
- 21:39Speaker 1: top six standpoint, not just maybe a faceoff standpoint, but
- 21:43Speaker 1: also potentially what can you do to find the right
- 21:46Speaker 1: combinations here for the penalty kill.
- 21:49Speaker 8: Yeah, it's penalty kills an interesting thing. You need to
- 21:53Speaker 8: be smart number one, because you have to understand a
- 21:56Speaker 8: what your kill system is, but also you have to
- 21:59Speaker 8: understand the other teams power play and how to how
- 22:01Speaker 8: to shut it down, how to break it, what to
- 22:02Speaker 8: be aware of. So you've got to be smart. You
- 22:05Speaker 8: have to be a little crazy as well, because you
- 22:07Speaker 8: have to throw yourself in front of slap shots. You
- 22:09Speaker 8: have to you have to be willing to block shots.
- 22:10Speaker 8: You've got to be a little crazy.
- 22:12Speaker 7: Uh.
- 22:12Speaker 8: And the third thing is you've got to be I
- 22:14Speaker 8: think Fits used the word determined. You've got to be
- 22:17Speaker 8: determined to kill off this two minutes and do whatever
- 22:20Speaker 8: it takes to do it. And you know, when you
- 22:22Speaker 8: do get control of the puck in your own end,
- 22:24Speaker 8: uh know where their opening is. To get the puck
- 22:27Speaker 8: down the ice, make a good change recognizing the second period,
- 22:30Speaker 8: and penalty killing's a little harder because of that long
- 22:32Speaker 8: change in the first period, So you've got to be
- 22:34Speaker 8: sure it gets all the way down. It can't just
- 22:36Speaker 8: get to their blue line because they're going to catch
- 22:38Speaker 8: you on a change. All these things go into good
- 22:41Speaker 8: penalty killers, and honestly, it doesn't. It doesn't get all
- 22:44Speaker 8: the limelight, doesn't get all the highlights, doesn't get all
- 22:46Speaker 8: the glory. But you got eight guys that can kill
- 22:49Speaker 8: penalties off. You know it fits you. And I talk
- 22:52Speaker 8: about this a lot. What would you rather have a
- 22:54Speaker 8: good penalty killer or a good power play? And lots
- 22:57Speaker 8: of times the answer is a penalty kill.
- 22:59Speaker 7: Yeah, I would take I would take a good I
- 23:02Speaker 7: take a top five PK and a bottom five power
- 23:06Speaker 7: play over the reverse any day of the week, because
- 23:10Speaker 7: I feel like, especially in playoff time, when you're only
- 23:13Speaker 7: getting two max three power plays a game. In a
- 23:17Speaker 7: playoff game, you kill off three of those pks and
- 23:20Speaker 7: and you know, especially if you're on the road, I mean,
- 23:23Speaker 7: you're you're shutting that entire crowd down. And I think
- 23:25Speaker 7: the momentum change of being able to have four guys
- 23:29Speaker 7: shut down five mentally, that is a huge piece to
- 23:33Speaker 7: overcome subconsciously or not for the other team.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So but now I'm with you man.
- 23:38Speaker 7: Like the PK. I mean you mentioned Mike the numbers.
- 23:40Speaker 7: This team has given up seven to nine power They've
- 23:44Speaker 7: given up nine power play goals in their last seven games.
- 23:49Speaker 7: I mean that is just again, like everything else, it's inexcusable.
- 23:54Speaker 7: It's it's befunneling, it's baffling, it's mind bottling.
- 23:57Speaker 3: It's when everything that Lane Lambert has said.
- 23:59Speaker 7: And again, the PK this year was one of the
- 24:02Speaker 7: stronger areas until it was it. You know, the power
- 24:05Speaker 7: play was strong all year longer. The PK earlier than
- 24:08Speaker 7: you like, took that dip off the table. They've been
- 24:11Speaker 7: thirty first in the NHL for about six weeks straight
- 24:13Speaker 7: now in the PK, and that number just kept on falling.
- 24:17Speaker 7: But you know, I think you're right, it's a termination.
- 24:19Speaker 7: I think it's also just don't simplify, don't do too
- 24:23Speaker 7: much when you get the puck, dun, dumb and change right.
- 24:26Speaker 7: You know, I don't need short handed goals. I don't
- 24:29Speaker 7: need a power kill. I don't need that. I need
- 24:31Speaker 7: you to kill off the two minutes and get back
- 24:34Speaker 7: to work.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Five on five. That's what I need.
- 24:36Speaker 7: So don't you know, you get the puck, whip it
- 24:39Speaker 7: down the ice, lived to five another day.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Here's the impact of this, just for example, in the
- 24:43Speaker 1: recent stretch, Winnipeg three of three and the power play
- 24:47Speaker 1: on Monday night, crack And lost that game six to two.
- 24:49Speaker 1: The cracking kept Winnipeg off the board five on five
- 24:53Speaker 1: until period three when Brad Lambert scored against you the
- 24:57Speaker 1: manmock went three of six. Crack And lost that game
- 25:00Speaker 1: against Buffalo, cracking allowing a power play goal on three chances.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Buffalo came right back won that game as well. We
- 25:08Speaker 1: go back here to the Nashville game at Nashville to
- 25:11Speaker 1: begin that six game road trip. Nashville went one of
- 25:14Speaker 1: three on the power play, and what could have been
- 25:16Speaker 1: a very very close game, crack And fell in that contest,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and so forth and so on.
- 25:21Speaker 4: So it certainly makes a big impact, all right.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Once again, a lot to get to here, as Ron
- 25:26Speaker 1: Francis stepping down from the Crack and end of the season,
- 25:29Speaker 1: plus more conversation from the last week as well, potentially
- 25:33Speaker 1: for the future directions of Krack and want to Go,
- 25:35Speaker 1: and we're gonna cover more of this with ja Con
- 25:37Speaker 1: right around the corner. Pull questions up right now a
- 25:40Speaker 1: Crack and audio net, go and vote. We'll cover more
- 25:42Speaker 1: of this in a bit as far as what young
- 25:44Speaker 1: player you want to see with the hot hand by
- 25:47Speaker 1: the end of the regular season. Jay CON's next right
- 25:49Speaker 1: here on Cracking Weekly on ninety three to three KJERFM.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Firebirds are back into a playoffs spot. The X is
- 25:57Speaker 1: officially at their name, and it looks like it's going
- 26:01Speaker 1: to be an opener for them in round number one.
- 26:04Speaker 1: The only question is who will they face again. Mike
- 26:07Speaker 1: Benton with you back here on Cracking Weekly along with
- 26:10Speaker 1: Everett and now they're going to take a bit of
- 26:12Speaker 1: a break. Jake Con joining us right around the corner.
- 26:14Speaker 1: The Firebirds, though locked in right now, it appears no
- 26:17Speaker 1: higher than third place, although beyond that plenty of doubt.
- 26:21Speaker 1: San Jose comes in today one point back of them.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Coachella Valley at thirty nine twenty two and five eighty
- 26:28Speaker 1: three points on the season. Up next today they take
- 26:32Speaker 1: on the Hendersons Silver Knights. Six games left on their
- 26:37Speaker 1: side and at the playoffs word to begin today, they
- 26:41Speaker 1: would open the first round against the Bakersfield Condors. So
- 26:45Speaker 1: a lot to look forward to. Logan Morrison right now
- 26:48Speaker 1: leads them fifty seven points in sixty four games. Jagger
- 26:52Speaker 1: Furkus two points back, fifty five points in sixty one games.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Tyson Jugnat the Monks the league leaders in defenseman for scoring. Oh,
- 27:02Speaker 1: by the way, he's also a rookie forty three points
- 27:05Speaker 1: in sixty six games as well. Nick A Koco, Victor
- 27:09Speaker 1: Ossman splitting plenty of time in Nasel. Before we get
- 27:12Speaker 1: to Jay con Fellas, give me one guy you're looking
- 27:17Speaker 1: forward to watching here for the Calder Cup playoff run.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Oh, I gotta go jug Nof.
- 27:21Speaker 8: I think that. You know, he's a guy that we
- 27:24Speaker 8: got to see in camp last year a little bit.
- 27:26Speaker 8: I was pretty excited about the way he played. I'm
- 27:29Speaker 8: looking forward to seeing him next year in camp and
- 27:32Speaker 8: some preseason games as well. But the way he's played
- 27:35Speaker 8: for the Firebirds this year, getting into the playoffs, he's
- 27:37Speaker 8: absolutely somebody I'd won on my blue line.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Yeah, give me, gimme Fercus and Morrison.
- 27:45Speaker 7: I think those two guys, you know, you're looking at
- 27:48Speaker 7: potentially finding more offense, and those guys are doing it
- 27:51Speaker 7: down there in CV. They're you know, higher draft picks
- 27:54Speaker 7: in these first few years for Seattle, and you want
- 27:57Speaker 7: to see what you got from from your prospect pool.
- 27:59Speaker 7: So well they have, they have a good playoff and
- 28:03Speaker 7: then I think they're coming in here camp trying to
- 28:06Speaker 7: battle for a spot.
- 28:07Speaker 3: So I'm looking at.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Those two to see how they handle the high pressure
- 28:10Speaker 7: situation of pro pro playoffs.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Logan Morrison right now in the top twenty four league
- 28:16Speaker 1: scoring again fifty seven points in sixty four games. I'm
- 28:19Speaker 1: gonna go Tyson Jugnath. Defensemen take longer to develop a marinate,
- 28:23Speaker 1: but my goodness for what he did in Portland. It
- 28:27Speaker 1: showed playing head and shoulders above the rest. He knows
- 28:29Speaker 1: how to play the puck with confidence, he knows how
- 28:33Speaker 1: to defend in the modern game. He turned plenty of
- 28:36Speaker 1: heads in preseason play and showing that he has adapted
- 28:39Speaker 1: very very quickly here to the pro game at the
- 28:42Speaker 1: American Hockey League level as of right now. Take notes,
- 28:46Speaker 1: Tyson Jugnath is seventh in AHL scoring among defensemen, leader
- 28:51Speaker 1: among all rookies on the blue line, by the way,
- 28:54Speaker 1: forty three points in sixty six games. I think he's
- 28:58Speaker 1: gonna be a big piece of future. I'm looking forward
- 29:01Speaker 1: to watching him all right. Moving on, joining us now
- 29:04Speaker 1: on Cracking Weekly, the world famous Jake con He is
- 29:07Speaker 1: the co host on The Points, heard Monday through Friday
- 29:10Speaker 1: from ten am Pacific to noon Pacific on Sirius XM
- 29:15Speaker 1: NHL Network Radio. He and Victoria Maddie Ash do a
- 29:18Speaker 1: great job on the air every day. First time, though,
- 29:21Speaker 1: I believe Jake joins our airwaves now on the Beacon
- 29:24Speaker 1: Plumbing Hotline for this Hello to you, thank you for
- 29:27Speaker 1: jumping on, and I first want to begin with a
- 29:29Speaker 1: nod to your late colleague and a dear friend of
- 29:32Speaker 1: many of us, Jim Boomer Gordon. You two taken over
- 29:36Speaker 1: for a guy who was near and dear to a
- 29:37Speaker 1: lot of us, and Boomer Gordon passing away tragically just
- 29:42Speaker 1: a while back here in this regular season, A lot
- 29:45Speaker 1: of us had a chance here to share what Boomer
- 29:47Speaker 1: meant to us. But he had this share for quite
- 29:50Speaker 1: a while. How much did Boomer influence many of you,
- 29:54Speaker 1: whether it would be professionally or personally.
- 29:56Speaker 9: I mean, it's hard to put into words what he
- 29:58Speaker 9: meant to me, both as a co worker, as a
- 30:01Speaker 9: co host for so many years over a decade doing
- 30:03Speaker 9: shows with him, but also just as a friend. I
- 30:05Speaker 9: think that's really where I've missed him the most is
- 30:08Speaker 9: those texts about other sports.
- 30:09Speaker 6: Boomer was such an all sports guy.
- 30:12Speaker 9: Obviously, he loved hockey, was great at covering the game
- 30:14Speaker 9: of hockey, but he would text me about anything any
- 30:16Speaker 9: sport you could name. Golf was probably our favorite. That
- 30:19Speaker 9: was a big one for us on the weekend or
- 30:21Speaker 9: in any big golf tournament. Obviously with the Masters coming up,
- 30:23Speaker 9: this would be a big time for us doing our
- 30:25Speaker 9: Master's picks. And we always had his Jim Nance bit
- 30:28Speaker 9: to start the show. So so many things I'm going
- 30:30Speaker 9: to miss about the guy. And he really helped me
- 30:32Speaker 9: grow as a broadcaster. He gave me the chance, you know,
- 30:34Speaker 9: I started it out with just a small role on
- 30:36Speaker 9: the show, and then it grew and grew and really
- 30:39Speaker 9: being our show, and he treated it as such, and
- 30:41Speaker 9: he really made me feel like it was our.
- 30:43Speaker 6: Show over the years.
- 30:44Speaker 9: So man, I really miss him every day, you know,
- 30:47Speaker 9: a little things remind me of him. We had a
- 30:49Speaker 9: celebration for life for him about a week and a
- 30:50Speaker 9: half ago. Really nice to meet some of his family,
- 30:53Speaker 9: beautiful people, meeting some of his old college buddies and
- 30:56Speaker 9: things like that as well. So there's there's certainly a
- 30:58Speaker 9: hole to station Mike, and you know, hole in all
- 31:00Speaker 9: of our hearts missing Boom. It's been tough to roll on,
- 31:03Speaker 9: but you know, credit to everybody at the station, particularly
- 31:06Speaker 9: Victoria stepping in and not an easy spot. And I've
- 31:09Speaker 9: really enjoyed doing the show with her. And look, we're
- 31:11Speaker 9: doing our best to entertain and kind of keep the
- 31:13Speaker 9: ball moving forward. And Boomer would want us to keep
- 31:16Speaker 9: watching hockey, stop talking about him, and kind of move on.
- 31:18Speaker 6: That's that's how Boom was.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Boomer, we're looking up at you. We miss you,
- 31:22Speaker 4: love you.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And one more question for you, eighteen holes for one
- 31:26Speaker 1: round at Augusta. What do you have gone with Tiger
- 31:28Speaker 1: Phil or someone else?
- 31:31Speaker 9: Oh, I think we're going Tiger. I think he's going
- 31:34Speaker 9: Tiger here. Boom was always a huge Tiger guy. I'm
- 31:36Speaker 9: a big Tiger guy as well. Unfortunate, what's sort of
- 31:38Speaker 9: happened really the weeks, and I was looking forward to
- 31:41Speaker 9: seeing him tee it up. I really thought he was
- 31:43Speaker 9: going to. I think if if this didn't happen, he
- 31:45Speaker 9: we probably would be watching him at least tee it
- 31:47Speaker 9: up and obviously not going to contend at this point.
- 31:49Speaker 9: So yeah, eighteen holes at Augusta. I think you gotta go, Tiger.
- 31:52Speaker 9: What a golf course.
- 31:53Speaker 6: I dream one day of being able to play it.
- 31:55Speaker 4: Mike, I don't know how I'm going to get myself in.
- 31:57Speaker 6: We'll see. We'll see.
- 31:58Speaker 9: Maybe me and you could play it together one time.
- 32:01Speaker 9: We'll figure that out later.
- 32:02Speaker 1: By hook or by crook, it's going down, and I'm
- 32:05Speaker 1: going to send a text here to the wife saying
- 32:07Speaker 1: something emergency. Why it's just popped up here, and we'll
- 32:10Speaker 1: take care of the rest. We kinda have to go
- 32:12Speaker 1: on the regular season. Tampa Bay and Buffalo are duking
- 32:16Speaker 1: it out in the Atlantic. Carolina's basically have the metro
- 32:20Speaker 1: all locked up. The Penguins are there. Then in the Central,
- 32:24Speaker 1: then Dallas and Minnesota, who are a duking this out
- 32:27Speaker 1: here for seeds two and three, And then as Conor
- 32:29Speaker 1: mc david said, ye, Pillow fights in the Pacific Division
- 32:33Speaker 1: at this point, what is your biggest surprise.
- 32:37Speaker 9: Well, I would say biggest surprise probably of the season
- 32:40Speaker 9: would be Buffalo and not only making the playoffs, but
- 32:43Speaker 9: where they are pushing Tampa for the top spot in
- 32:45Speaker 9: the Atlantic Division. If you would have told me the
- 32:47Speaker 9: Sabers would make the playoffs, I'd probably say, no, not happening.
- 32:50Speaker 9: I've tried, you know, I've gone down that road many
- 32:52Speaker 9: times and it never works out. But if you would
- 32:54Speaker 9: have told me they would win the Atlantic Division, which
- 32:56Speaker 9: they haven't yet, but they're right there fighting tooth and
- 32:59Speaker 9: nail down the stretch Withampa. Montreal is in that conversation
- 33:01Speaker 9: as well, I would probably call you crazy. So it's
- 33:04Speaker 9: been fun to watch this come together. Depending on home
- 33:07Speaker 9: ice advantage, Mike, I might have a little trip planned
- 33:09Speaker 9: to Buffalo. Buffalo's you know, very quick drive from where
- 33:12Speaker 9: I am to go to a game and obviously seeing
- 33:14Speaker 9: playoff hockey there for the first time in a long time,
- 33:16Speaker 9: that fan base is going to be rabid for some
- 33:18Speaker 9: playoff hockey.
- 33:19Speaker 6: So I'm hoping to catch a game in Buffalo.
- 33:21Speaker 9: And you know, I was breaking it down four games
- 33:23Speaker 9: left for Montreal, Buffalo and Tampa and the Atlantic Division
- 33:27Speaker 9: all tied with points. Now Montreal has less regulation wins,
- 33:31Speaker 9: the schedule still does favor Tampa just slightly. So I
- 33:34Speaker 9: still think they've got the inside track to that one seed,
- 33:36Speaker 9: but a couple of regulation losses here lately for the
- 33:39Speaker 9: lightning of open the door for Buffalo and heck, maybe
- 33:41Speaker 9: even Montreal to jump up there.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you saw the vibe around Key
- 33:46Speaker 1: Banks Center before last night's game against Tampa Bay. They
- 33:50Speaker 1: had a wagon that had a Buffalo logo outside. They
- 33:54Speaker 1: had visual signers that you can take for instagram saying
- 33:58Speaker 1: we're back. They had I mean something even installed in
- 34:01Speaker 1: your live size figure Brandon Hagel that fans could walk
- 34:03Speaker 1: up and punch. And this is all before the game,
- 34:06Speaker 1: so needless just say the vibes are certainly back in Buffalo.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Are you buying ors selling the Sabers as the Eastern
- 34:13Speaker 1: Conference champion?
- 34:14Speaker 9: I think I'm selling overall because if I'm picking an
- 34:17Speaker 9: Eastern Conference champion, I can only pick one here. I
- 34:20Speaker 9: can't pick three or four and kind of go that way.
- 34:22Speaker 9: So I got to narrow it down to see them
- 34:25Speaker 9: making the Cup final.
- 34:26Speaker 6: I just it's difficult.
- 34:28Speaker 9: There's a lot of players on that roster that haven't
- 34:29Speaker 9: played playoff hockey before. I do think it's a bit
- 34:32Speaker 9: of a different animal, and when I'm looking at the
- 34:33Speaker 9: teams they're gonna have to go through, Tampa's got a
- 34:36Speaker 9: lot of veterans on that roster.
- 34:37Speaker 6: I know they've.
- 34:37Speaker 9: Struggled in the playoffs recently, but I think it'll be
- 34:40Speaker 9: a little bit different this year. With Florida out of
- 34:42Speaker 9: the equation, Tampapa kind of feels like the team to
- 34:44Speaker 9: beat on that side, and Montreal they just have playoff magic.
- 34:47Speaker 9: Whether they're a good team or not a good team,
- 34:49Speaker 9: they feel like they get more out of their roster,
- 34:51Speaker 9: and I would say this year they are actually a
- 34:53Speaker 9: really good team in Montreal. They're getting the goaltending coffields
- 34:56Speaker 9: having an excellent season, only a matter of time before
- 34:58Speaker 9: he gets that fiftieth goal. So I think it's gonna
- 35:01Speaker 9: be tough for Buffalo if they do make it through there,
- 35:03Speaker 9: You're probably looking at maybe a Carolina in the conference final.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Certainly wouldn't rule it out, Mike. I think the.
- 35:08Speaker 9: East is very wide open compared to the Western Conference.
- 35:11Speaker 9: I think any of these teams could go on a
- 35:13Speaker 9: run and Buffalo could be that team, but I'm probably
- 35:15Speaker 9: gonna go somewhere else with an Eastern Conference pick.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I'm sure you discuss this here a million times across
- 35:21Speaker 1: multiple airways, but just for you know, for the sake
- 35:23Speaker 1: of getting this in the Seattle.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Airspace, we have to talk about the Leafs. The E
- 35:28Speaker 4: is next here to their name.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Questions abound, and this also begins with their roster Ashtin, Matthews,
- 35:35Speaker 1: Morgan Riley, William Nielander.
- 35:38Speaker 4: At this point, would.
- 35:39Speaker 1: You be surprised if all move on or more if
- 35:43Speaker 1: all stay by this next year opening night?
- 35:46Speaker 9: I would be more surprised if all of them moved on.
- 35:48Speaker 9: I really would, just just based on the verbiage that
- 35:50Speaker 9: they're using. Keith Pelly obviously they make the GM change
- 35:54Speaker 9: last week and he comes out and speaks president, you know,
- 35:57Speaker 9: president of the team comes out and speaks and talks
- 35:59Speaker 9: about how they want to do more of a retool,
- 36:01Speaker 9: not a rebuild. So I would think any general manager
- 36:03Speaker 9: coming in and that search is still ongoing, I think
- 36:05Speaker 9: that's going to be the MO. It's okay, how do
- 36:08Speaker 9: we get this team back to being a playoff team
- 36:10Speaker 9: and a contender with Austin Matthews and with William Neelander
- 36:13Speaker 9: now Morgan Riley might be a different conversation. I could
- 36:16Speaker 9: see if they're able to move on from him, maybe
- 36:19Speaker 9: something there. But I think they want to continue to
- 36:21Speaker 9: build this team at least for the next couple of
- 36:22Speaker 9: years around Nelander and Matthews, because these two players are
- 36:26Speaker 9: still very much in their prime. Like they're still excellent
- 36:28Speaker 9: hockey players. There's still players capable of ink Neelander's case
- 36:31Speaker 9: ninety plus points. You know, Matthews in a healthy season
- 36:34Speaker 9: could go for fifty heck even sixty, and he's going
- 36:36Speaker 9: to have to bounce back off some sort of injury.
- 36:38Speaker 9: So I think that's how the Leaves view it. We
- 36:40Speaker 9: got these guys in their prime. Let's see if we
- 36:42Speaker 9: can kind of thread the needle retool this roster. If
- 36:44Speaker 9: it doesn't work, then yeah, there's probably gonna be some
- 36:47Speaker 9: lean years and they might have to end up entertaining
- 36:50Speaker 9: a rebuild a couple of years down the road.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Ja con joining us here from the point on Sirius
- 36:54Speaker 1: Sex at Menachel Network Radio here as a part of
- 36:56Speaker 1: Tonight on Crack and Weekly about to the local matters
- 37:01Speaker 1: here at this point, Jake the Kraken, It looks so
- 37:04Speaker 1: good about three weeks ago, four weeks ago, coming out
- 37:07Speaker 1: of the Olympic break, and now they're teetering on the
- 37:10Speaker 1: brink of elimination. So at this point when you talk
- 37:13Speaker 1: about the fork in the road with the young players
- 37:16Speaker 1: coming up and already breaking through on this roster, using
- 37:19Speaker 1: just Berkeley Catton as an example, plus also the veterans
- 37:24Speaker 1: ranging from those who could be extended. Jordan Everly's already
- 37:27Speaker 1: one of them. Reportedly they were in the mix for
- 37:29Speaker 1: artimy Paneren right before the Olympic break. What direction for
- 37:33Speaker 1: them in this next offseason makes the most sense to you.
- 37:37Speaker 9: Look, it's unfortunate that it's gotten here for Seattle, especially
- 37:40Speaker 9: because I was kind of thinking, Okay, are we going
- 37:42Speaker 9: to get a possible Seattle Colorado rematch in the first
- 37:45Speaker 9: round from a few years ago, and Colorado actually clinched
- 37:48Speaker 9: up the Central Division they have won the Central since
- 37:50Speaker 9: that year, and Seattle beat them in the first round.
- 37:53Speaker 9: I remember being so excited for the fans in Seattle
- 37:56Speaker 9: that they got to see playoff hockey for the first time,
- 37:57Speaker 9: because Mike, there's nothing like playoff hockey in the National
- 38:00Speaker 9: Hockey League and you get that first taste of it,
- 38:02Speaker 9: you become a little bit addicted. You're like, oh man,
- 38:04Speaker 9: this is just something else. The building's rocking. So it's unfortunate.
- 38:08Speaker 4: It was ridiculous back in twenty three. Ridiculous.
- 38:10Speaker 9: Oh I bet and Utah is most likely going to
- 38:13Speaker 9: get to experience that this year as well. So I'm
- 38:15Speaker 9: happy for the fans in Utah and I've kind of
- 38:17Speaker 9: been rooting for that this year. I want everybody to
- 38:18Speaker 9: kind of get that taste of it. So I look,
- 38:21Speaker 9: that's the goal, right, how do we get back there?
- 38:23Speaker 9: And I just think, unfortunately for the crack And they've
- 38:25Speaker 9: kind of find themselves in that mushy middle where they
- 38:27Speaker 9: haven't really been bad enough any year to draft really
- 38:30Speaker 9: high to get that superstar player. They're always competitive but
- 38:34Speaker 9: yet missing the playoffs, so you got to find a
- 38:36Speaker 9: way to get that superstar talent. You reference them being
- 38:38Speaker 9: in on our Tevy panera and that doesn't surprise me
- 38:40Speaker 9: at all because I think when you see a player
- 38:42Speaker 9: like that become available, you go, Okay, let's let's do
- 38:44Speaker 9: what we can to bring him in. Unfortunately that didn't
- 38:46Speaker 9: work out. He goes to La So I think that
- 38:48Speaker 9: would be the top of my list. I know it's
- 38:50Speaker 9: not easy. It's easy for me to sit here and say, yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 9: go get a superstar, right, it's easy for any of
- 38:55Speaker 9: us to say that. Another thing to actually go do it.
- 38:57Speaker 9: I don't know how you do it, but I think
- 38:58Speaker 9: that's what you're trying to pull off. Or you're trying
- 39:00Speaker 9: to get a star player coming to Seattle in any fashion,
- 39:03Speaker 9: whether that's via trade or via free agency.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Crazy how free agency has certainly of all because Nick
- 39:08Speaker 1: Smaltz was for a long time top of the list,
- 39:11Speaker 1: and he all of a sudden then gets locked up,
- 39:13Speaker 1: gets extended, and we're, you know, we're seeing more and
- 39:15Speaker 1: more of this trending because the salary cap is going
- 39:17Speaker 1: up here in the NHL, so not many big names
- 39:20Speaker 1: are available this offseason. It is a paper thin free
- 39:23Speaker 1: agent class as far as proven talent. Bobby McMahon the
- 39:26Speaker 1: crack and one would love to get him locked up
- 39:28Speaker 1: presumably here. But we'll see where this goes, because he
- 39:31Speaker 1: is still a UFA at this point, despite the torching
- 39:34Speaker 1: start that he has had since beginning his time here
- 39:36Speaker 1: in Seattle. But I pose this question to one of
- 39:40Speaker 1: your colleagues. A few weeks ago, and I'll just you know,
- 39:42Speaker 1: toss this here to you. Trades versus free agency in
- 39:46Speaker 1: this day and age in the NHL for the summer,
- 39:48Speaker 1: is free agency dead?
- 39:50Speaker 9: I think it's it's I don't know if it's fully dead,
- 39:52Speaker 9: but it's dying. It's a fairy, faint heartbeat for free
- 39:54Speaker 9: agency at this point. And look, this might change as
- 39:57Speaker 9: the landscape changes over the next few years, but I
- 39:59Speaker 9: think the period you put it perfectly right there, with
- 40:01Speaker 9: the salary cap going up and players you know, last
- 40:04Speaker 9: chance to maybe get that eight year deal, that eighth year,
- 40:07Speaker 9: I think a lot of guys are comfortable where they're at.
- 40:10Speaker 9: They get paid, they take the money before they even
- 40:12Speaker 9: hit free agency, and that's changed over the last couple
- 40:15Speaker 9: of years. So I think if you're a team like
- 40:17Speaker 9: Seattle and a handful of other teams that are thinking,
- 40:19Speaker 9: I want to improve my team in free agency, you're
- 40:22Speaker 9: probably looking at going out there and getting middle tier players,
- 40:24Speaker 9: and those aren't really needle movers.
- 40:26Speaker 3: Those aren't really.
- 40:26Speaker 9: Going to change things too much for you, right, So
- 40:28Speaker 9: you're not going to go out there and get that
- 40:30Speaker 9: superstar player in free agency, which leads to probably having
- 40:33Speaker 9: to make some sort of trade. Again, those aren't easy.
- 40:36Speaker 9: You got to find a dance partner. You've got to
- 40:37Speaker 9: be able to make it work for both sides. But
- 40:39Speaker 9: I'd be working the phones. I'd be trying to find
- 40:41Speaker 9: out we just talked about Austin Matthews, right. I don't
- 40:44Speaker 9: think the Leafs are going to deal him in the offseason.
- 40:46Speaker 9: But that's the type of guy, you know. If I'm
- 40:48Speaker 9: a Seattle I'd be saying, Hey, what will it take
- 40:50Speaker 9: to get him here? What do you guys need? Picks, prospects,
- 40:53Speaker 9: you know, whatever it might be. Again, it might not
- 40:55Speaker 9: be him in particular, but a player like that, if
- 40:58Speaker 9: that is, if there's any chance of that, that's the
- 41:00Speaker 9: type of trade I'd be looking to make if I
- 41:01Speaker 9: was Seattle.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Speaking of those young players, let's just go through them
- 41:05Speaker 1: right now. I mean, Berkeley Catton just turned twenty years
- 41:07Speaker 1: of age and many love what he's doing despite the
- 41:10Speaker 1: goal scoring finish not being there yet for him. Jacobrien
- 41:14Speaker 1: ohl Guy is tearing it up the season. Shane Wright
- 41:18Speaker 1: is in his early twenties, Matty Beaniers is still in
- 41:21Speaker 1: his early twenties as well. Out of that group, for
- 41:24Speaker 1: anybody else, who is the most compelling young guy to
- 41:26Speaker 1: you for this next season.
- 41:28Speaker 9: I think Catton, just because we haven't seen as much
- 41:31Speaker 9: of him yet, and I see the potential because I'm
- 41:33Speaker 9: looking for someone to be a true needle mover here
- 41:35Speaker 9: and I'm not saying those other guys can't be, but
- 41:37Speaker 9: I think he's the one that maybe intrigues me to
- 41:39Speaker 9: the most here going long term. And I have to
- 41:42Speaker 9: remind myself how young Matti Beniers is still. I feel
- 41:45Speaker 9: like he's now been around for a while and I
- 41:47Speaker 9: treat him as a more of a mid twenties, late
- 41:49Speaker 9: twenties guy, but he's not. He's still in his early twenties.
- 41:52Speaker 9: He's still kind of learning the NHL game, and I
- 41:54Speaker 9: think at times I've been underwhelmed by the.
- 41:56Speaker 6: Production, not by the play. The eye test.
- 41:58Speaker 9: When I watch Beniers, I like what I see, but
- 42:00Speaker 9: you look at the points and you go, Okay, it's
- 42:02Speaker 9: a little underwhelming for a guy drafted that high. You
- 42:04Speaker 9: know you want that ninety plus point guy. Maybe he
- 42:07Speaker 9: can become that at some point, and you hope Shane
- 42:09Speaker 9: Wright can be a legitimate goal scorer as well. So again,
- 42:11Speaker 9: it kind of goes back to what I said at
- 42:13Speaker 9: the start. You need someone to develop into a needle
- 42:16Speaker 9: mover here, like a true again ninety plus point guy,
- 42:19Speaker 9: forty plus goal scorer. That's what they need to do.
- 42:22Speaker 9: Maybe it's just patients with some of these young guys.
- 42:24Speaker 9: You know, watch Benears develop, watch Shane Wright developed. Maybe
- 42:27Speaker 9: Katten turns into something that's the hope in Seattle. So
- 42:30Speaker 9: I'm bullish on what Catton could become. And I'm gonna
- 42:33Speaker 9: still stay patient with Maddy Biniers. I got to cut
- 42:35Speaker 9: the guy some slack. He's still very very young.
- 42:37Speaker 1: On the verge of twenty goal third time four seasons.
- 42:40Speaker 1: When you consider the the kind of game that he
- 42:42Speaker 1: loves to play, the two hundred foot style defensively, he
- 42:45Speaker 1: is on the cusp once again of hitting that benchmark.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Speaking of ninety point guys, Koutrov, McDavid McKinnon, Celebrini or
- 42:54Speaker 1: the field who does the heart trophy go.
- 42:56Speaker 9: To oh man, this is this. I flip flop on
- 42:59Speaker 9: this most daily, Mike. This is a great race between
- 43:02Speaker 9: these guys. I'll watch the Sharks that I'll go, I'll
- 43:04Speaker 9: give it to Celebrini. Then I watch the Lightning and
- 43:06Speaker 9: I go, Okay, maybe Kutrov should get it. And then
- 43:09Speaker 9: I see the even strength goal scorer or the even
- 43:11Speaker 9: strength points for Nathan McKinnon are very impressive, and I think,
- 43:15Speaker 9: you know, maybe because McKinnon just won it a couple
- 43:18Speaker 9: of years ago, maybe voters will pivot somewhere else. I know,
- 43:21Speaker 9: Kutrov doesn't seem to get the attention that he probably deserves.
- 43:25Speaker 9: And everybody loves Macklin Celebrini. I mean, it's just a
- 43:27Speaker 9: love and around the league, and why not.
- 43:29Speaker 6: The kid is special.
- 43:30Speaker 9: He's so exciting to watch, especially in Canada for those
- 43:33Speaker 9: watching the Olympics, and you had a young kid, a
- 43:35Speaker 9: teenager like that, making an impact at the Olympics. So
- 43:38Speaker 9: if the Sharks get into the playoffs, Mike, I think
- 43:40Speaker 9: my vote might be going to Macklin Celebrini, and it
- 43:43Speaker 9: might be a little biased. I just like watching the guy,
- 43:45Speaker 9: but ultimately Nikita Kutrov what he means to that Tampa
- 43:48Speaker 9: Bay Lightning team. If San Jose doesn't make it, I'm
- 43:50Speaker 9: giving the vote to kuch. I think he's just been
- 43:52Speaker 9: unbelievable this year, and I think he's been disrespected in
- 43:54Speaker 9: the voting too many times. It's kind of it's time
- 43:56Speaker 9: to right some of those wrongs this.
- 43:58Speaker 4: Year, Jake.
- 43:58Speaker 1: We can't let you go without the us in the
- 44:00Speaker 1: craziness that we have seen over the last week with
- 44:02Speaker 1: coaching changes, and I kind of have joked to mean,
- 44:05Speaker 1: I think we're on the verge of seeing someone replaced
- 44:08Speaker 1: mid round during the Stanley Cup playoffs. This actually happened
- 44:11Speaker 1: globally elsewhere back in the CAHL.
- 44:13Speaker 4: It actually happened two years ago.
- 44:15Speaker 1: But the Islanders are right now three points out of
- 44:17Speaker 1: the mix, bringing on Pete de Boor for Patrick Wahb.
- 44:21Speaker 1: The Vegas Golden Knights brought in John Tortorella replacing Bruce Cassidy,
- 44:25Speaker 1: and what do you know, They've won four in a
- 44:26Speaker 1: row and are now on the verge of a division
- 44:29Speaker 1: title in the Pacific Division. Would this surprise you to
- 44:34Speaker 1: see this happen again down the road or where you
- 44:37Speaker 1: just call this maybe for this season a one off?
- 44:40Speaker 9: I think, well, mate, look this is a bit of
- 44:42Speaker 9: a copycat of league, so maybe maybe it is something
- 44:45Speaker 9: if it works for these teams.
- 44:46Speaker 6: And we're gonna wait and see.
- 44:47Speaker 9: The Islanders haven't even played a game with Peter de
- 44:49Speaker 9: Boor yet, and they've got four games left and they're
- 44:51Speaker 9: kind of watching everybody past them. I think the Islanders
- 44:54Speaker 9: are in trouble for this season. I think they're gonna
- 44:55Speaker 9: miss the playoffs. I think this is more for next
- 44:58Speaker 9: year and beyond with Matt Schaffer, and they want to
- 45:00Speaker 9: to get in front of Peter de boor block other
- 45:02Speaker 9: teams from going to get him.
- 45:03Speaker 6: But if this.
- 45:03Speaker 9: Works for Vegas, and you just said it, there all
- 45:06Speaker 9: of a sudden looking like they might win the Pacific Division.
- 45:08Speaker 9: Here they timed it out well. They bring in towards.
- 45:10Speaker 9: They had two against the Canucks, one against the Calgary Flames.
- 45:13Speaker 9: They were very impressive in Edmonton though against the Oilers,
- 45:16Speaker 9: I thought that was the game where they.
- 45:17Speaker 6: Really wowed me.
- 45:19Speaker 9: If that works out for them, they go on any
- 45:20Speaker 9: sort of playoff run, you might see other teams go,
- 45:22Speaker 9: you know what, we can fire a coach with three
- 45:25Speaker 9: weeks left in the season, bring in a guy like Tortorella,
- 45:28Speaker 9: kick the team in the pants, and make it sort
- 45:30Speaker 9: of a timing type situation. We always talk about the
- 45:32Speaker 9: coach bump, right, and normally we see it in January
- 45:35Speaker 9: or something like that, and then it wears off. Maybe
- 45:37Speaker 9: there's something to be said for the coach bump at
- 45:39Speaker 9: this time of the year and you use it to
- 45:41Speaker 9: propel yourself into the playoffs. It's interesting strategy, not one
- 45:44Speaker 9: I thought we would see this year.
- 45:45Speaker 4: Though, Jake, good stuff man.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Appreciate you and for those around here just getting still
- 45:50Speaker 1: in tomb. Social media, whis best place to find you?
- 45:53Speaker 4: Where is it at?
- 45:54Speaker 9: Jhon four on x formerly known as Twitter, So you
- 45:58Speaker 9: can reach me there, you can ask me a question,
- 46:00Speaker 9: things like that.
- 46:01Speaker 6: Maybe maybe have.
- 46:02Speaker 9: Some Master's picks up there as well throughout the course
- 46:04Speaker 9: of the week. So thanks for having me on Mike.
- 46:06Speaker 9: Really great chat with you.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I'm going Rory by the way, please lock it in. Jake,
- 46:10Speaker 1: thank you, appreciate you all.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Right, Grace Tove, Jake, thank you very much.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Jaken joining us here on Crack and Weekly, Everett myself,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Al Kaniski. We will be right back after this with
- 46:21Speaker 1: final thoughts, poll question, update, mail bag, three stars and
- 46:26Speaker 1: you right here on Cracking Weekly on ninety three to
- 46:28Speaker 1: three k JERFM. Youth could be a big piece of
- 46:33Speaker 1: this picture very very soon on the Crack and side directions.
- 46:36Speaker 1: What we're looking forward to as far as uh, what's
- 46:40Speaker 1: going to be coming about here for this and this
- 46:42Speaker 1: next summer and that leads us here to our Crack
- 46:43Speaker 1: and weekly poll question. With five games left in the
- 46:46Speaker 1: regular season, which young player do you want to see
- 46:49Speaker 1: a scoring streak from most to end the regular season?
- 46:53Speaker 1: As of right now, drum roll please, forty percent of
- 46:58Speaker 1: you say either Matty Beaneer's or Berkeley Catton. It is
- 47:03Speaker 1: a tie right now, but it is fluctuating back and
- 47:06Speaker 1: forth as of right now, a forty percent draw between
- 47:10Speaker 1: Matty Beanear's and Berkeley Catton. That pole question still ongoing
- 47:14Speaker 1: right now at Twitter and x at Kraken Audio Net.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Always a sudden to look forward to, But as Everetten
- 47:20Speaker 1: now said, you keep playing as hard as you can
- 47:23Speaker 1: until that he is right by your name. The situation's dire,
- 47:26Speaker 1: but there is still opportunity here as the Kraken get
- 47:29Speaker 1: back at home for one last home stand for the
- 47:31Speaker 1: regular season Tomorrow night against Tomorrow night against Vegas, then
- 47:36Speaker 1: this Saturday coming up against Calgary Rare afternoon start time
- 47:40Speaker 1: by the way at four o'clock, and then Monday regular
- 47:44Speaker 1: season home finale against Los Angeles Kings before the Crack
- 47:48Speaker 1: can end this regular season on the road in Vegas
- 47:52Speaker 1: and Colorado. Everetten now back with us right now, Fellows,
- 47:56Speaker 1: what about you Baneer's Catton, Fisker, Mulgard or the field
- 48:00Speaker 1: for the young player that you want to see a
- 48:02Speaker 1: streak from scoring wise to end the regular season, Yeah,
- 48:06Speaker 1: I would go.
- 48:07Speaker 8: I'd love to see a goal or two from Visker,
- 48:10Speaker 8: Molgard and Malanson. I think that you know they've played
- 48:14Speaker 8: well enough to certainly get those.
- 48:15Speaker 3: If you're talking about goals scoring streaks or points also,
- 48:19Speaker 3: you know, yeah, points streaks.
- 48:21Speaker 8: I'd love to see Maddy Beniers end the season on one.
- 48:25Speaker 8: I'll talk about him a little bit in my three Keys,
- 48:28Speaker 8: but I think Berkeley Catton, you know Berkeley Catton, same thing.
- 48:32Speaker 8: His game has developed over the course of the year.
- 48:34Speaker 8: He's he's looked good at certain points, He's looked junior
- 48:39Speaker 8: hockey still at certain points, but I think that junior
- 48:41Speaker 8: hockey piece is slowly coming out of him and his
- 48:44Speaker 8: game is adapting to the NHL level. So I'd love
- 48:47Speaker 8: to see him end the season with a handful of
- 48:50Speaker 8: points to wrap it up.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna go Maddi Beniers. I mean, I'm looking
- 48:55Speaker 3: at two goals, four assists his last twelve games. I'd
- 48:59Speaker 3: like to.
- 48:59Speaker 7: See him pick up a little bit more of the
- 49:01Speaker 7: offense going into the summer. I mean, like I mentioned earlier,
- 49:05Speaker 7: this is now about giving yourselves a good taste in
- 49:08Speaker 7: your mouth going into the summertime and going into the offseason,
- 49:11Speaker 7: giving you something to build on. I think these last
- 49:14Speaker 7: five games are just as important individually as they are collectively.
- 49:19Speaker 7: And Matty Beaneers this year, you know, no one can
- 49:22Speaker 7: argue with the defensive turnaround.
- 49:24Speaker 3: That we've seen in his game.
- 49:26Speaker 7: I mean Matty Beaneers right now this season at a
- 49:28Speaker 7: you know, minus eight, but he or yeah, minus eight
- 49:32Speaker 7: this year, forty seven points, if you can get to fifty,
- 49:34Speaker 7: that'd be great. Twenty goals. He's one shy of that.
- 49:37Speaker 7: But I think that I'd love to see Maddy Beaneers
- 49:41Speaker 7: showing the flashes of that seventy point player. We all
- 49:45Speaker 7: think he should be, right, you know, my whole thing
- 49:48Speaker 7: ten points per million, right, I'd love to see Matty
- 49:50Speaker 7: Beaneers with the seventy point season, seventy five point season,
- 49:53Speaker 7: a thirty goal season coming up here soon. So if
- 49:57Speaker 7: we can see Matty Beaneers stream together, you know, four
- 50:00Speaker 7: in two in these last five games, five and whatever,
- 50:03Speaker 7: you know, three and seven, if he if he can,
- 50:05Speaker 7: you know fill the score sheet in these next next
- 50:09Speaker 7: five games. I think you're gonna you're gonna feel good
- 50:11Speaker 7: about where he is going into next season.
- 50:14Speaker 1: All right, our mail bag segment once again, you can
- 50:16Speaker 1: find me at Twitter and ex at Benton Underscore Mike
- 50:19Speaker 1: ever it fits you is at the Voice fits Alconisky,
- 50:22Speaker 1: also at al Kaniski. And we get a question here
- 50:26Speaker 1: from Troy and this is as simple and direct, does
- 50:29Speaker 1: it gets?
- 50:29Speaker 5: All?
- 50:30Speaker 4: Right? What's our next move?
- 50:32Speaker 1: So it really depends on how this regular season is
- 50:36Speaker 1: going to end. But I think we know as far
- 50:38Speaker 1: as where this is tracking when it is going to
- 50:42Speaker 1: end by game eighty two, potentially once again the crack
- 50:45Speaker 1: and five games left regular season, they're nine points out.
- 50:49Speaker 1: This is gonna be a very very tricky situation, I'm
- 50:52Speaker 1: going to tell you right now. But I again see
- 50:55Speaker 1: merits here to both sides of this argument. I touched
- 50:59Speaker 1: on this back at the top of the show. If
- 51:01Speaker 1: you want to be aggressive, if you want to go
- 51:03Speaker 1: ahead and find a new way, a new route to
- 51:07Speaker 1: add your roster, if the playoffs are a priority, dig
- 51:10Speaker 1: in its go time. Trademarkets where you got to go
- 51:13Speaker 1: to hammer away and be prepared to pay up and
- 51:17Speaker 1: pay up richly, not to mention Bobby McMahon due to
- 51:20Speaker 1: be a UFA and with his run right now, he
- 51:23Speaker 1: is showing that he is going to be worth potentially
- 51:26Speaker 1: every single penny no matter what the final costs will
- 51:30Speaker 1: be here. But this is again the cost of doing business,
- 51:32Speaker 1: especially in the NHL when you're a fifth or franchise
- 51:35Speaker 1: and you're also battling it out with teams who have
- 51:38Speaker 1: been in this league for decades upon decades and they
- 51:42Speaker 1: have a longer track record.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Here's where I see.
- 51:45Speaker 1: If you want to go with the younger route, you
- 51:47Speaker 1: have UFAs said to depart, you'll have cap space opening up.
- 51:51Speaker 1: That cap space is there in case you want to
- 51:53Speaker 1: bring a veteran or two in who's going to help
- 51:56Speaker 1: you up front? But also I think be a big
- 51:58Speaker 1: culture guy. That's the most important thing for me. This
- 52:02Speaker 1: is someone who's going to be I think aligned with
- 52:04Speaker 1: Lane Lambert, his vision and what he laid down for
- 52:08Speaker 1: the first two thirds of this season. From there, here's
- 52:11Speaker 1: the beauty of this elevate Berkeley Catton, elevate, Matty Benier,
- 52:15Speaker 1: still maybe even Shane Wright in this picture, Oscar Fisker Muleguard,
- 52:19Speaker 1: he blew us away. Can Tyson Jugnauth also make this roster. Yes,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I know Ded take longer to develop, but he's shown
- 52:27Speaker 1: the fast track to get into the NHL more so
- 52:30Speaker 1: than others on this blue line. Some folks will say,
- 52:34Speaker 1: you let the kids play, I will still show up.
- 52:38Speaker 1: That's very important to consider when you have a plan
- 52:41Speaker 1: in place and you provide direction.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Watching the kids.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Grow, no matter the ups and downs, is a fun
- 52:48Speaker 1: thing here to watch and that will be an important
- 52:51Speaker 1: part of this decision.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Potentially for this next summer.
- 52:55Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean four UFAs this summer, five to count
- 52:59Speaker 8: Mount Murray. I can't see a situation where this team
- 53:03Speaker 8: carries three goaltenders next season. So you know, as much
- 53:07Speaker 8: as I like the person in the play of Matt Murray,
- 53:10Speaker 8: I just don't see him being part of this roster
- 53:13Speaker 8: long term. And that leaves you with Schwartz Toldenen, Bobby
- 53:17Speaker 8: McMahon and Alexiak and this team I think has to
- 53:21Speaker 8: find a way to hold on to Bobby McMahon.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Now that may impact some of the.
- 53:25Speaker 8: Other UFAs, it may not, but they've got to make
- 53:30Speaker 8: a real hard decision on what it's going to take
- 53:32Speaker 8: to keep Bobby McMahon around based on how his first
- 53:37Speaker 8: sample size has come through here since the trade deadline.
- 53:42Speaker 8: That's the big one for me, Mikey. I think if
- 53:44Speaker 8: this team is able to come to terms and keep
- 53:48Speaker 8: Bobby McMahon, the other uf as you know, I'm fifty
- 53:52Speaker 8: to fifty on. I think that mcmahn's the most critical
- 53:56Speaker 8: one of the bunch. I think going into next season,
- 54:00Speaker 8: and everything you said is right, I want to keep
- 54:02Speaker 8: seeing uh Coppo Coco continue to develop his game. I
- 54:05Speaker 8: think that he's been fantastic since the return.
- 54:08Speaker 4: I love you brought him up to Yeah, you.
- 54:10Speaker 8: Know, yeah, he's He's definitely in that mix for me.
- 54:14Speaker 8: I think on the blue line, you know, a guy
- 54:16Speaker 8: like Rikor Evans, you know, listen, Matty Mneer's had a
- 54:18Speaker 8: down here. I think Rikor Evans has had a down yere.
- 54:21Speaker 8: I'm hoping he can get.
- 54:22Speaker 3: It turned around for next year. I'd like to. I'd
- 54:25Speaker 3: like to see that happen for sure.
- 54:28Speaker 8: As far as the maybe the bottom four, the bottom
- 54:31Speaker 8: pairings of defenseman, there could be some change there. We'll see, uh.
- 54:35Speaker 8: But my highlights I think are are Coco and and
- 54:39Speaker 8: McMahon as far as uh signing, signing McMahon, and seeing
- 54:43Speaker 8: Coppo Coco continue to evolve his game.
- 54:47Speaker 7: I think what's next for Seattle is is taking the
- 54:50Speaker 7: next step.
- 54:50Speaker 3: You know Utah. I'll use Utah as an example. And
- 54:54Speaker 3: and Al.
- 54:55Speaker 7: You talked to the two Army Bill Armstrong the other
- 54:57Speaker 7: day when they were here, you know, he you were
- 55:00Speaker 7: to ask him, you know, about what's been the difference
- 55:04Speaker 7: between this year and last year. He told you last
- 55:06Speaker 7: year we were playing meaningful games. But this year we're
- 55:09Speaker 7: winning those meaningful games. And I think next year the
- 55:12Speaker 7: Kraken need to be in that position. You know, this
- 55:15Speaker 7: year the goal was to the barrel bottom basement, goal
- 55:20Speaker 7: was to play meaningful games.
- 55:22Speaker 3: In April, in March. You did that.
- 55:24Speaker 7: Now next year your floor, your absolute basement floor.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Playoffs.
- 55:29Speaker 7: Don matter if it's one, don matter if it's WC two.
- 55:33Speaker 7: You need to get into the playoff. That is the minimum,
- 55:36Speaker 7: That is the bare minimum. Next season for this team,
- 55:40Speaker 7: six years in, you need to get back to the playoffs.
- 55:43Speaker 7: So you got four first over your next two seasons,
- 55:46Speaker 7: You've got some We talked about the UFA is going
- 55:49Speaker 7: to be pushed out. You talked about I mentioned it
- 55:51Speaker 7: before in I open there are guys on this roster
- 55:54Speaker 7: that have been of interest to other teams. Make me
- 55:58Speaker 7: an offer, you know what I mean? There needs to
- 56:00Speaker 7: be a roster overhaul. You know, there's a lot of
- 56:03Speaker 7: players on this team that I know that we all
- 56:06Speaker 7: like personally, our fans like as people they've grown close
- 56:11Speaker 7: to and grown accustomed to. But these are the facts.
- 56:15Speaker 7: There is something flawed with the roster as it is
- 56:18Speaker 7: constructed today, and there needs to be fixes. There needs
- 56:21Speaker 7: to be changes, and there needs to be hard I
- 56:25Speaker 7: don't envy Jason Bottril, I don't envy the people who
- 56:29Speaker 7: have to make those decisions, but there needs to be difficult, hard,
- 56:35Speaker 7: maybe unpopular decisions made this summer to help advance this
- 56:40Speaker 7: team to a bare bones minimum playoff spot next year.
- 56:45Speaker 1: And I think also one thing that shows as far
- 56:48Speaker 1: as potential of this Jason Botterrel pulled off the biggest
- 56:51Speaker 1: trade at the deadline of Bobby McMahon. There's no one
- 56:54Speaker 1: that's come close to his goalscoring production for names moved.
- 56:57Speaker 1: But once again there's one example. You make it move
- 57:00Speaker 1: to fill a need, do it with purpose. You can
- 57:02Speaker 1: find a way to begin change because change is good Everett,
- 57:06Speaker 1: as you said, with what this team is looking to
- 57:08Speaker 1: do here in the long term future. All right, to
- 57:10Speaker 1: our three stars, we go right now, and I'll just
- 57:13Speaker 1: begin from this point because it was such a tough
- 57:15Speaker 1: four game run and I kind of had to sit
- 57:19Speaker 1: back and dwell on this. But once again we have
- 57:21Speaker 1: opened this part of the conversation to more of a
- 57:24Speaker 1: creative approach. I'll go for this with my third star
- 57:28Speaker 1: and head coach Lane Lambert, because I look back last
- 57:32Speaker 1: four games, three of them. This team came out ready
- 57:36Speaker 1: against Utah, two nothing lead against Winnipeg, one nothing lead
- 57:41Speaker 1: against Minnesota, one nothing lead against a team that had
- 57:45Speaker 1: thirty three wins when scoring first this season. Matter of fact,
- 57:48Speaker 1: they led to one. They showed that they were prepared
- 57:53Speaker 1: to come and play Chicago. Didn't the course begin as well.
- 57:57Speaker 1: But I think for the message we're getting for guys
- 58:02Speaker 1: who have bought in and we're seeing this as well,
- 58:06Speaker 1: there is once again reminders of what kind of culture
- 58:10Speaker 1: he is trying to set. We have talked a lot
- 58:12Speaker 1: about accountability, We've talked a lot about discipline, but also
- 58:16Speaker 1: resolve is a big part.
- 58:17Speaker 4: Of that too.
- 58:18Speaker 1: So we're seeing a bit of a tug right now.
- 58:20Speaker 1: I think between old versus new and new concepts are
- 58:26Speaker 1: coming in. New concepts are going to break old habits,
- 58:30Speaker 1: and breaking old habits will lead a new opportunity and
- 58:34Speaker 1: new victories as well. Again, this is a difficult period
- 58:38Speaker 1: they're going through right now, but I think once again
- 58:40Speaker 1: for the message that's being sent for a difficult time.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Lane Lambert is my third start, my second star of
- 58:45Speaker 1: Philip Grubauer. Granted a few got past him here, but
- 58:48Speaker 1: not many of these were his fault. If any forty
- 58:51Speaker 1: two saves forty eight shots, this could have been much
- 58:53Speaker 1: much worse, though. I think he came out prepared out
- 58:57Speaker 1: of the gate against Winnipeg. The Mark Scheifflee break away
- 59:00Speaker 1: way and then the rebound saved showed me at that
- 59:02Speaker 1: point he was dialed in. You hope that he's certainly
- 59:05Speaker 1: back to health before the end of this regular season
- 59:08Speaker 1: to cap off what has been a fine, fine campaign
- 59:10Speaker 1: for him. Philip Grubauer is my second star. My first
- 59:13Speaker 1: star goes to Coppocaco four points in four games. He
- 59:17Speaker 1: has played great hockey since the Olympic break, much more
- 59:20Speaker 1: confidence with the puck. He's making plays. He's using size
- 59:24Speaker 1: to his advantage. Cop Ocaca was my first star.
- 59:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna steal one of yours. Mike.
- 59:31Speaker 3: I like your creative your creative juices.
- 59:33Speaker 7: If you want, this is your canvas. My third star
- 59:38Speaker 7: Mike Betton, thanks for feeling it and uh, you did
- 59:43Speaker 7: well in Winnipeg and then traveling to Minnesota.
- 59:45Speaker 4: Thank you, buddy, great great.
- 59:47Speaker 3: Seeing your folks again. Who made the trip up to Minnesota.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Oh it was so fund baby boy, do some work.
- 59:52Speaker 7: So my third star Mike Betton, Uh, I'm with you.
- 59:56Speaker 7: I didn't even I didn't even you know. I like
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: that star for Lane. You know, coaching is not the
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: issue for this team.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: He's done it.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: He's tried it all and all the while for as
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: frustrated and is for annoyed, and as for as visibly
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: upset sometimes as.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: He is, he always makes time for us.
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: You can tell that that it ain't for lack of trying,
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: and he's always been measured.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: In his responses.
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: So I appreciate especially after a tough week like this.
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: Lane Lambert will be my second star and four points
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: four games. Wesley Fitzi's favorite cracking got Pococo enough said,
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: I mean he was a. He was a bright spot
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: for this team. You know, I love the Grubauer shot
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: there as well. Maybe I'll give him my honorable mention.
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: Not really his fault, the cracking. You know, when I
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: was doing the TV broadcast in Winnipeg, we had a
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: whole package on puck luck, just bad bounces, and that's
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: been the case in recent games. Philip Grubauer has given
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: Seattle chances to win time and time again the great starts.
- 1:00:59Speaker 7: He's made some fun nominal saves early on. I mean,
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: I think al we talked about how three four games
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: in a row. Now Kraken goaltending has had to make
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: bigger saves, game saving saves.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: On the first shift. But you shouldn't be needing to
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: make a game.
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: Saving save a minute and a half into a hockey game,
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: and Gruby's been doing that, So I'll give him my
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: honorable mention.
- 1:01:23Speaker 8: Yeah, my three stars start with Maddy Beneers for my
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: third star. He's had assists in the Chicago and Winnipeg games.
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: He's closing in on a fifty point season. Yes, you'd
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: like to see him get up to the seventy level,
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: but it looks like he should finish at fifty or above.
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: He looks and plays differently this season, and I like
- 1:01:42Speaker 8: the change that he's made to his game. Still producing
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: as much as he can offensively, but his defensive game
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: has improved so much. So he's my.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: First He's my third star.
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: Second start.
- 1:01:52Speaker 8: I'm gonna get to Jaden Schwartz a goal and assist
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: in that Chicago loss. He was involved on both goals
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: in the four to two loss. Three points over his
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: last five games. I think he's a leader on this team.
- 1:02:04Speaker 8: I think he's a guy that gets it done in
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: all situations. Wherever he's needed, he steps up to the plate.
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: He's someone that does not shy away from the front
- 1:02:13Speaker 8: of the net, plays their game in and game out.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: So he's my.
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: Second star, and then, surprise, surprise, Kopocacco is my first
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: star as well. Assists in the Winnipeg in Minnesota game.
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: Four points over his last five. He'd be a fifty
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: point guy as well if he was on an eighty
- 1:02:30Speaker 8: two game season. But I think he's good. He's at
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: about I don't know sixty two right now, so ten
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: or fourteenth short of where everybody else is at that's
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: played a full season, so good chance he'll be on
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: a fifty point season had he played a full year,
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: and hopefully that's the case next year.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Very promising signs as he presses on the Crack and
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: trying to press on here. With five games left in
