Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Kirstin Corson: Drive Electric CEO on the changes to the clean car standards
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Talk sai'd be, I don't mind a g string at
- 0:02Speaker 1: a swimming pool personally. We'll talk about that later on
- 0:04Speaker 1: Right now though, for your ute, the Clean Car Importer
- 0:07Speaker 1: standards are set to be lowered to align with Australia's
- 0:10Speaker 1: emission standards. The adjustments will see a softening of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: CO two targets for commercial vehicles, including utes. The Clean
- 0:17Speaker 1: Car standard penalties as they stand would see people paying
- 0:21Speaker 1: an extra five and a half thousand dollars when purchasing
- 0:24Speaker 1: certain types of vehicles by twenty twenty seven, so that
- 0:27Speaker 1: money could be saved. Kirsten Coulson is the chair of
- 0:31Speaker 1: Drive Electric and is with me this morning. A Kirston,
- 0:35Speaker 1: good morning to you. I won't ask about the g
- 0:37Speaker 1: strings at the pools, but we will ask about the utes.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Is this heading in the right direction or the wrong direction?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Look, that's heading in the wrong direction. It's really clear
- 0:46Speaker 2: already from the data that the emission standards of our
- 0:50Speaker 2: vehicles in New Zealand have increased in twenty three So
- 0:52Speaker 2: we're heading in the wrong direction completely.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Why should we be doing any better than Australia.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, this legislation is set to align with Australia but
- 1:05Speaker 2: actually it doesn't. Australia have got penalties that are a
- 1:09Speaker 2: lot tougher in New Zealand, and Australia also has federal
- 1:12Speaker 2: and state incentives at in every state in Australia, so
- 1:18Speaker 2: it's much more appealing to go ev in Australia than
- 1:21Speaker 2: it is in New Zealand.
- 1:22Speaker 1: What's their uptake? Because we're what two percent of athlete
- 1:25Speaker 1: are we still all?
- 1:28Speaker 2: We're two percent? And if you look at last year,
- 1:31Speaker 2: we were sitting at around twenty seven percent of new
- 1:34Speaker 2: cow sales we're electric, and this year we've gone down
- 1:37Speaker 2: to eight percent. If we look I guess at our
- 1:41Speaker 2: really big trading partners where we've got fair trade agreements,
- 1:45Speaker 2: China is looking at forty five percent new cow sales
- 1:49Speaker 2: are electric, Europe's looking at twenty five percent, and the
- 1:53Speaker 2: US is looking at eleven percent. So you know, we've
- 1:57Speaker 2: got trading agreements where we've got a commitment to decabine
- 2:01Speaker 2: and those partners are decalbinizing. But clearly we're not at
- 2:05Speaker 2: the moment.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Okay, So you would like to see this, You would
- 2:08Speaker 1: like to see the government basically reverse this. You want
- 2:12Speaker 1: to see I mean, the Ford range is still is
- 2:13Speaker 1: that still a most popular vehicle sold vehicle it was
- 2:17Speaker 1: for a few years. They're running kiwis obviously like buying them,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and there's a cost of living crisis. So isn't there
- 2:23Speaker 1: a you know, isn't there an argument to take the
- 2:26Speaker 1: the accelerator accelerator a little bit?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Look, if the government was truly serious about saving kiwi's money,
- 2:33Speaker 2: they would be supporting them to get into EV's And
- 2:35Speaker 2: the reason being that, Ryan, if you charged your EV
- 2:39Speaker 2: at home overnight, off peak, you'd be paying around two
- 2:42Speaker 2: dollars per one hundred kilometers. If you're paying for petrol
- 2:46Speaker 2: on a six point nine liter vehicle, you're paying around
- 2:49Speaker 2: twenty dollars per one hundred kilometers. So absolutely, there is
- 2:53Speaker 2: the cost of living crisis.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The road user charge will change, will take care of that,
- 2:57Speaker 1: won't it?
- 3:00Speaker 2: User charges We're still paying twenty three percent more than
- 3:04Speaker 2: a petrol vehicle and EV but still over a total
- 3:07Speaker 2: cost of ownership model evs are still substantially cheaper.
- 3:11Speaker 1: All right, we will leave it there, Kirston, thank you
- 3:13Speaker 1: very much for your time. Kirsten Couson, the chair of
- 3:16Speaker 1: Drive Electric, responding to news there that the clean car
- 3:19Speaker 1: and Porter standards are set to be lowered. They will
- 3:22Speaker 1: be aligned with Australia, though as Kirsten has pointed out,
- 3:25Speaker 1: there are other differences in that equation too. For more
