- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome The Money in Wealth with John O'Briant, a production
- 0:03Speaker 1: of The Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Yo Yo,
- 0:14Speaker 1: this is John O'Brien and this is the Money and
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wealth podcast series, season two. And this is a gut
- 0:21Speaker 1: check episode. This is out of sequence. I didn't mean
- 0:26Speaker 1: or intend to do this episode at this time. I
- 0:30Speaker 1: would like to think that this episode is not actually necessary,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but something has happened in the last week or so
- 0:40Speaker 1: that it's caused me to think and to feel, yes,
- 0:46Speaker 1: to feel deeply that I need to double back and
- 0:53Speaker 1: relay the foundation for this house before we start talking
- 0:57Speaker 1: about building a business and building and buying a house
- 1:00Speaker 1: and and you know, buying assets and what it is
- 1:06Speaker 1: and what is that and talking about you know, all
- 1:08Speaker 1: these exciting topics that I have coming up, family offices,
- 1:12Speaker 1: et cetera. We've got to make sure we're not rearranging
- 1:15Speaker 1: the deck chairs on the Titanic. This episode just might
- 1:19Speaker 1: upset a few people, because I'm coming right at you.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I carry you, and I care about you enough to
- 1:25Speaker 1: tell you the truth. And I rather you respect me
- 1:28Speaker 1: and learn to like me than like me and never
- 1:32Speaker 1: respect me. And I wouldn't respect myself if I didn't
- 1:37Speaker 1: tell you what I believe is the hard earned truth
- 1:42Speaker 1: about success and about failure. There's a lot of attitude
- 1:48Speaker 1: out here, and I hate to have to point out
- 1:52Speaker 1: a group, but it is overwhelmingly coming from a group
- 2:00Speaker 1: I absolutely am rooting for that I want to win desperately, Millennials.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The comments that I am reading are on the one hand,
- 2:17Speaker 1: inspiring because they're very ambitious, and on the other hand,
- 2:23Speaker 1: extremely troubling because they're overconfident for no good reason. And
- 2:29Speaker 1: God gave you two ears, all of us, including myself,
- 2:32Speaker 1: two ears in one mouth, so we listen twice as
- 2:35Speaker 1: much as we talk. Quincy Jones, God rest his soul.
- 2:39Speaker 1: How'd you get so smart? John? I'm just nosy as hell.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I want to know everything about everything. I look at
- 2:50Speaker 1: the success that I've had a lot of it has
- 2:53Speaker 1: to do with me being nosy, of being curious, of
- 3:00Speaker 1: literally seeking out success stories the best in the game.
- 3:05Speaker 1: This is way before social media, digital media, so you
- 3:10Speaker 1: have to do it the hard way. You had to
- 3:12Speaker 1: meet somebody somewhere and decide whether to talk or to listen.
- 3:21Speaker 1: If you can meet them somewhere, I mean you can
- 3:23Speaker 1: meet this generation can meet anybody theoretically online, no matter
- 3:29Speaker 1: how big the star is or how influential or wealthy
- 3:34Speaker 1: or successful, if they're online, you can get a comment
- 3:39Speaker 1: to them or a message to them. Heck, I'm reading
- 3:42Speaker 1: your comments. That's why I'm doing this episode. So you
- 3:46Speaker 1: can reach me. You are reaching me if you see
- 3:48Speaker 1: me commenting on particularly Instagram. I try to get to
- 3:52Speaker 1: all the platforms Facebook, etc. Threads, etc. But if you
- 3:57Speaker 1: see me commenting, or you see somebody comming in my name,
- 4:01Speaker 1: that's me. And typically I love the common section. I
- 4:04Speaker 1: live for the common section because that's an opportunity to
- 4:06Speaker 1: have a subtopic conversation, another opportunity to educate and to
- 4:11Speaker 1: grow a couple posts that I put out, and I
- 4:18Speaker 1: don't talk unless I know what I'm talking about. If
- 4:21Speaker 1: it's about health and wellness, I don't know a thing
- 4:23Speaker 1: about that. I go to my wife, Shaeitra. If it's
- 4:26Speaker 1: about spirituality, even though I think I'm deeply spiritual, I
- 4:31Speaker 1: don't know a thing about religion and deep deep spirituality.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I go to Ambassador Andrew Young, Reverend doctor Cecil Chip
- 4:40Speaker 1: Murray raised me. But I don't know a thing about
- 4:42Speaker 1: this topic. I go to the Hero the iconic person
- 4:46Speaker 1: in my life Ambassador Reverend doctor Ambassador Andrew Young, who's
- 4:51Speaker 1: on that balcony with doctor Kingen he was assassinated, but
- 4:55Speaker 1: also is a minister who marries and councils and knows
- 5:04Speaker 1: the Bible inside out. I go to Bishop TD Jakes
- 5:07Speaker 1: who's a friend also, and Reverend Dwight Andrews First Church,
- 5:13Speaker 1: where I just spoke this Sunday, where they're trustees. Sunday.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I go to people who are experts in their area.
- 5:19Speaker 1: If it's entertainment, if it's music, I go to my
- 5:22Speaker 1: brother Ti or Killer Mike. When the area is political,
- 5:33Speaker 1: there are you know why range of folks I go
- 5:35Speaker 1: to and I listen. Even though I was a presidential
- 5:38Speaker 1: advisor for three different administrations from both parties and recognized
- 5:42Speaker 1: by five you as presidents, I've known nine you as presidents.
- 5:46Speaker 1: But I am not political, so I don't presume that
- 5:51Speaker 1: I have the answers there either. I call my head
- 5:53Speaker 1: of government relations in public Policy all the time, Jenney Roscoe,
- 5:58Speaker 1: asking questions. I've succeeded on a grand level by anybody's definition,
- 6:09Speaker 1: so I'm told, but I have four hundred employees, not
- 6:13Speaker 1: four thousand, not forty thousand, not four hundred thousand. So
- 6:21Speaker 1: if I'm going to get to four thousand or forty
- 6:23Speaker 1: thousand or four hundred thousand employees, I'm currently a four hundred.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I need to talk to my fortune five hundred friends
- 6:31Speaker 1: and ask questions and shut up and be curious and
- 6:39Speaker 1: not just hear them, but listen, truly listen. I'm not
- 6:45Speaker 1: hearing the silence of listening. I'm hearing hearing to respond,
- 6:52Speaker 1: or worse, hearing to react, waiting, worse, waiting for one's
- 6:57Speaker 1: turn to talk. Wealth is a mindset, Please hear me.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Money can be made on labor, for sure, money has
- 7:06Speaker 1: been made on labor. But money makes more money on
- 7:10Speaker 1: money than money will ever make on labor. And technology
- 7:12Speaker 1: will follow after that. But the overarching, overarching component of wealth,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and you want to come from the latter work capitalism
- 7:25Speaker 1: or copy toss copy toss copy TOAs is Latin for
- 7:29Speaker 1: knowledge in the head lucy translated. That's also really about learning,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and so when you stop learning, you start losing. You're
- 7:40Speaker 1: rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic. The ship is sinking,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but we're picking drapes. And there was a couple times
- 7:52Speaker 1: where again I love a very interesting debate and discussion.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But there was one post where I talked about the
- 8:01Speaker 1: difference between poor neighborhoods and unfortunately a large number of
- 8:07Speaker 1: black and brown neighborhoods are poor, and I grew up
- 8:09Speaker 1: in one, so I have credibility to say it. They're
- 8:11Speaker 1: poor white neighborhoods that are poor. Clearly, they're more poor
- 8:14Speaker 1: Whites and America than poor anybody else goes without saying
- 8:16Speaker 1: anybody knows their facts, but this is these are neighborhoods
- 8:19Speaker 1: that I grew up in. I was concerned about these neighborhoods,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and I was complementing the black community in brown community
- 8:25Speaker 1: for most of this post. But I started out by
- 8:27Speaker 1: saying that black and brown in poor neighborhoods tend to
- 8:29Speaker 1: be noisy urban neighborhoods, and wealthy neighborhoods tend to be quiet.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Didn't mention the race. And clearly they are black neighborhoods
- 8:39Speaker 1: that are that are wealthy. I've lived in many. We
- 8:42Speaker 1: all know them. The emotionalism in the comments about that
- 8:47Speaker 1: there were people were triggered by the fact that there's
- 8:50Speaker 1: some inference that I don't know what the inference was.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I didn't say it because I didn't say it, but
- 8:54Speaker 1: black in brown neighborhoods were only noisy. That was not
- 8:58Speaker 1: the point at all. That's not what I said. It's
- 9:00Speaker 1: not what I meant. Anybody knows me, knows that what
- 9:02Speaker 1: I meant it was, and smart people in the comments
- 9:05Speaker 1: would correct the others. Look, you guys are missing the
- 9:07Speaker 1: point all together. I mean, statistically, half of hate to
- 9:11Speaker 1: say it, behalf of black communities have a credit score
- 9:14Speaker 1: below six twenty. That's that's just a fact. So that
- 9:20Speaker 1: means that the majority of our communities can't get access
- 9:23Speaker 1: to prime credit. Now, you can call that what you want,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but it's not a prime rate community and probably is
- 9:28Speaker 1: a poor community. If you live in a five hundred
- 9:30Speaker 1: and six hundred credit score neighborhood, you seeing a check
- 9:32Speaker 1: casher and next to a pati loan lender, next to
- 9:34Speaker 1: a rental own store, next to a title lender, next
- 9:37Speaker 1: to a liquor store, next to a pawn shop. Okay,
- 9:39Speaker 1: that's gonna be a lot of noise physical. But what
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'm really talking about is mindset, right, mindset. People missing
- 9:47Speaker 1: them all together because they're so busy winning the battle,
- 9:52Speaker 1: win the battle, you lose the war. You're picking up
- 9:57Speaker 1: stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: we got to knock this off. There are people coming
- 10:04Speaker 1: from completely separate disciplines. I'm a businessman, right, I'm talking
- 10:09Speaker 1: about the investments I'm talking about I was literally talking about.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I walked through like consciously oblivious of most things around
- 10:15Speaker 1: me because it doesn't matter. I'm just quiet in the head.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And while it is symbolic, a symbolic truth that poor neighborhoods,
- 10:29Speaker 1: be they poor, white, rural, or black and brown and urban,
- 10:33Speaker 1: that these neighborhoods tend to be louder and noisier. It's
- 10:37Speaker 1: just a lot of stuff going on. People, aren't You
- 10:40Speaker 1: aren't building your own business. Typically you're working somebody else's
- 10:45Speaker 1: and you're entertaining yourself to keep yourself away from the stress.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And you've got a surviving mindset, a surviving mindset. It's
- 10:52Speaker 1: different from a winning mindset or a building mindset. So
- 10:54Speaker 1: having mindsets just trade and tende, trade and drama and emotions.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It's not an opinion, and it's just a fact. The
- 11:04Speaker 1: fact that folks could not even get beyond that to
- 11:09Speaker 1: get to the point to talk about through what I
- 11:11Speaker 1: was really talking about, which is you can live in
- 11:12Speaker 1: these neighborhoods as I did, as my friends did, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: still walk through it with a clear, quiet mind. Because
- 11:20Speaker 1: you cannot create symphonies, you cannot create beautiful music. When
- 11:27Speaker 1: Quncy Jones went into the studio, the noise had to
- 11:32Speaker 1: stop so the music would began, so he could hear
- 11:37Speaker 1: at some point in order to create genius, in order
- 11:40Speaker 1: to create a business, in order to do a budget,
- 11:42Speaker 1: in order to have a serious conversation, or you need
- 11:45Speaker 1: to think, you need time to reflect, You need to
- 11:51Speaker 1: quiet the noise. All a patterns is a monetized idea.
- 11:57Speaker 1: You need a space and a place to create eight.
- 12:01Speaker 1: The idea ideas are not created in noisy environments. There's
- 12:04Speaker 1: too much of us. There's too many things competing for
- 12:07Speaker 1: your focus. There's no time, space, or place for the
- 12:13Speaker 1: magic of creation. We never got to that conversation. Let's
- 12:18Speaker 1: fast forward beyond that. As another brother who was referred
- 12:22Speaker 1: to me by a very big celebrity. I don't want
- 12:26Speaker 1: to name names, but the celebrity said, you should speak
- 12:29Speaker 1: to John O'Brien and before that guy could be before
- 12:32Speaker 1: that gentleman who's a young man who brags about making
- 12:36Speaker 1: seven and eight figures. If you're making that kind of money,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you tend to not brag about it, by the way.
- 12:40Speaker 1: But I'll get to this in a moment. That guy
- 12:44Speaker 1: just starts going off about he's got this paper, he's
- 12:46Speaker 1: making seven figures, eight figures, he's doing cryptocurrency, he's doing stocks.
- 12:50Speaker 1: He he don't have time for talking to older dudes
- 12:54Speaker 1: and listening to them talk about boring businesses in real
- 12:59Speaker 1: estate takes too long. And even though he says he
- 13:01Speaker 1: owns real estate's complete contradiction. But he didn't ask me
- 13:06Speaker 1: a question. He didn't even know who I was. He
- 13:08Speaker 1: was too busy talking. I'm not concerned about me. I'm
- 13:11Speaker 1: concerned about him, because, yes, anybody can make money in
- 13:16Speaker 1: a moment for a minute, but if you go far
- 13:19Speaker 1: enough for the north Pole, you end up south. I
- 13:22Speaker 1: love you enough to tell you the truth. Sometimes you
- 13:24Speaker 1: need to just shut up. You just need to shut
- 13:27Speaker 1: your mouth and listen to somebody who's done it. Not
- 13:31Speaker 1: only have I am I one of the I think
- 13:34Speaker 1: top one two percent of all African American business people
- 13:38Speaker 1: who own who have a payroll of over a million
- 13:42Speaker 1: dollars every two weeks, a million a half almost two
- 13:44Speaker 1: million dollars every two weeks, four hundred employees full time.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But it built it from nothing, literally, from nothing to something.
- 13:54Speaker 1: It's the largest black male founded community based nonprofit new
- 13:57Speaker 1: US history. That's just my philanthropy. Not only have I
- 14:00Speaker 1: created these businesses and all this stuff, like the stuff
- 14:03Speaker 1: she'd sort of speak for itself, credentials. I mean that
- 14:07Speaker 1: alone should tell you to be quiet and listen, at
- 14:09Speaker 1: least in this space where I am noteworthy and this
- 14:16Speaker 1: person doesn't. I mean, if people are talking to me
- 14:18Speaker 1: don't have employees, they're confusing busyness with business. You can
- 14:23Speaker 1: be a wonderful self employment project. You can be a
- 14:26Speaker 1: personal services contract genius and have yourself and three contractors
- 14:31Speaker 1: and you're making seven figures. But riches is a contract,
- 14:34Speaker 1: so you're gonna make money, and God bless you. But
- 14:37Speaker 1: unless you're building wealth, what you do in your sleep,
- 14:39Speaker 1: what you need compounding for, which is infrastructure scale systems.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Just between a hustler, I said, this is my last podcast,
- 14:47Speaker 1: and a business person is paperwork. Okay, the paperwork takes time,
- 14:52Speaker 1: it takes patience, it takes details. Right, you can't learn
- 14:57Speaker 1: when you're talking. When you're running your mouth, we need
- 15:10Speaker 1: to knock it off and listen. I don't care how
- 15:13Speaker 1: much intelligence you have, That doesn't mean you have wisdom.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Wisdom comes with time, experiences, in years, it comes with bruises.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You cannot have a rainbow without a storm first. It's
- 15:26Speaker 1: a scientific fact that you cannot have a rainbow without
- 15:28Speaker 1: a storm. First. Success is going from failure to failure
- 15:32Speaker 1: without loss of enthusiasm. When I was coming up, I
- 15:38Speaker 1: wanted to meet two successful business people. It was Quincy
- 15:40Speaker 1: Jones and Ambassador Andrew Young. These I wanted to be international,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and the only two people I knew who were international
- 15:45Speaker 1: were these two people, to these two black men, And
- 15:48Speaker 1: so I just went about trying to meet them. And
- 15:51Speaker 1: it took me ten years to get Ambassador Young's attention,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and I literally chased him all around the country in
- 15:57Speaker 1: the world. I'd find out where he was speaking. I
- 16:00Speaker 1: would buy a plane ticket, out, buy an event ticket
- 16:02Speaker 1: I'd buy, I'd get an hotel room, I'd show up
- 16:05Speaker 1: and I would just try to get his attention. But
- 16:07Speaker 1: I would listen to the speech in the midst of
- 16:09Speaker 1: all that, And for ten years he would be gracious
- 16:12Speaker 1: to me, but he basically ignored me as he had
- 16:15Speaker 1: a right to do. He didn't know me from a
- 16:17Speaker 1: hillo Beans, but I knew he was the best in
- 16:18Speaker 1: the business in what he did. Quincy Jones, I wanted
- 16:25Speaker 1: to meet Quincy Jones didn't know I was going to
- 16:26Speaker 1: meet him. There was no social media back then, and
- 16:31Speaker 1: so I made I took a consulting contract a retainer
- 16:36Speaker 1: that I had for a thousand dollars. He was holding
- 16:37Speaker 1: a fundraiser at his house for a congresswoman. Congressmen Woman
- 16:41Speaker 1: we Needham and Linda mcdonnald got rest of his soul
- 16:44Speaker 1: who represented a district in south central La Compton, I
- 16:47Speaker 1: believe Watts and I bought up a ticket event ticket,
- 16:52Speaker 1: went to his house in bel Air. It was bel Air,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and got to meet Quincy Jones and we became dear friends.
- 17:01Speaker 1: But I invested in these relationships. When I was with
- 17:04Speaker 1: my first conversation with Quincy, I mostly listened. He talked
- 17:08Speaker 1: for four or five hours, just pouring into me. When
- 17:12Speaker 1: I met. When I finally got in bassilor Jung's attention,
- 17:15Speaker 1: we talked for four or five hours, but I mostly listened.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I talked Ambassador Young earlier tonight we've been now, dear friends,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm like a surrogate son. I'm told i've known him now,
- 17:28Speaker 1: I had a great relationship for twenty years. I still
- 17:31Speaker 1: today shut up and listen because what he has done.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I can't hold a candle to He's the best. He's
- 17:41Speaker 1: the closest thing to Nelson Mandela we have in the
- 17:43Speaker 1: world today. I can't compete with that. DOT wouldn't want to.
- 17:46Speaker 1: What I need to do is shut up. So we're
- 17:50Speaker 1: confusing bravado with confidence, we're convincing. We're confusing arrogance with
- 17:56Speaker 1: self esteem. We're confusing loudness with strength. When you got
- 18:02Speaker 1: the power, you don't need to use it. I don't
- 18:07Speaker 1: need to scream and holler. If I want to profile,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I guess I can hit you with my American Express
- 18:12Speaker 1: black heart, knock you out. But I don't even need
- 18:14Speaker 1: to do that. When you've got the power, you don't
- 18:16Speaker 1: need to use it. So I'm trying to give you
- 18:21Speaker 1: a message before it's too late. And it's not just
- 18:22Speaker 1: from millennials. These are for anybody who is too insecure
- 18:29Speaker 1: to acknowledge that you might be a little insecure. Like
- 18:32Speaker 1: my number one trade is I'm just reasonably comfortable in
- 18:34Speaker 1: my own skin. No one's comfortable in their own skin.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That's a lie. Anybody who says that or believes that
- 18:40Speaker 1: is just lying to you and lying to themselves. We're
- 18:43Speaker 1: all a little insecure. I'm insecure. Part of our success.
- 18:46Speaker 1: We get up with reason, we get up early, to
- 18:47Speaker 1: stay up late and work hard. Is a little insecurity
- 18:50Speaker 1: in our system. A little insecurity, A little fear is healthy.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Is why you run away from a bear, right. It
- 18:56Speaker 1: is what God put in you to have a proper
- 18:59Speaker 1: amount of fear at the appropriate time. God didn't put
- 19:03Speaker 1: a mouth lips on both sides of your head, He
- 19:05Speaker 1: put ears one mouth. So one of the reasons I'm
- 19:11Speaker 1: troubled is that there are people who excuse me for
- 19:15Speaker 1: being blunt. Just might be absolutely broke, but certainly are
- 19:19Speaker 1: struggling and striving. I just look at their profile because
- 19:23Speaker 1: I take the time and don't want to assume who
- 19:26Speaker 1: are on my page. This is my trade talk Live,
- 19:30Speaker 1: not the podcast. Obviously on my pages for social media
- 19:32Speaker 1: because I believe they want to learn about what it is.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm an expert, and I'm the guy who me and
- 19:37Speaker 1: my organizations who are responsible for financial literacy becoming the
- 19:40Speaker 1: policy of the US federal government. Me right, I've served
- 19:45Speaker 1: three US presidents. I've been in the Treasury Department, the
- 19:48Speaker 1: US Treasury Department, that's where I counseled, the White House
- 19:53Speaker 1: and the Treasury Department. I've been in this game for
- 19:56Speaker 1: a long time. I've built I've invested four point eight
- 19:59Speaker 1: billion dollars billion. Okay, my payroll is a couple of
- 20:04Speaker 1: million dollars just under that. Every two weeks, just the payroll,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and I'm up from nothing. No one gave me anything.
- 20:12Speaker 1: So I'm stunned that people are talking when they should
- 20:16Speaker 1: be listening and competing with me for opinion on a
- 20:20Speaker 1: topic that I think I'm pretty clear on. If you
- 20:23Speaker 1: are to compete with me, at least bring receipts. At
- 20:26Speaker 1: least I can respect that. But it is so obvious
- 20:29Speaker 1: that it's emotionalism and insecurity and vanity. But worse, there's
- 20:34Speaker 1: something about what's going on now where people actually, unfortunately
- 20:40Speaker 1: think because I guess you can comment with anybody. The
- 20:43Speaker 1: level of plans was level with digital media. Anybody can
- 20:46Speaker 1: talk to anybody, So maybe you think maybe anybody can
- 20:48Speaker 1: think they can be anybody without the work and let
- 20:52Speaker 1: me tell you that's wrong. Please hear me. Only in
- 20:56Speaker 1: the dictionary does the word success come before the word work,
- 21:00Speaker 1: because it's alphabetical. If you don't learn this lesson, whoever
- 21:06Speaker 1: you happen to be, you're going to fail. If you
- 21:11Speaker 1: don't shut up and listen, you're going to fail. You
- 21:16Speaker 1: may win the battle, but you're going to lose the war.
- 21:18Speaker 1: At some point. The money's going to run out, the
- 21:20Speaker 1: lights are going to turn off, the social media is
- 21:21Speaker 1: going to turn to somebody else or a morph into
- 21:24Speaker 1: something else with AI who knows. But this game we're
- 21:27Speaker 1: playing is going to be over because the fundamentals of
- 21:30Speaker 1: success are basically the same. They have it changed in ages,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and I'm trying to break them down for you, and
- 21:37Speaker 1: I'm doing it for free. Right, it's free game. As
- 21:42Speaker 1: Jay Z said on his four four four album, which
- 21:44Speaker 1: is a financial literacy album. In my opinion, I'm trying
- 21:46Speaker 1: to give you a million dollars worth a game for
- 21:48Speaker 1: nine ninety nine. I'm giving it to you for none
- 21:50Speaker 1: ninety nine. So let's get into some fundamentals. Right. There's
- 22:01Speaker 1: a difference between looking successful and being successful. So there
- 22:06Speaker 1: is there are too many people, particularly young people who
- 22:10Speaker 1: confused ego, arrogance, and even raw intelligence. Very smart people
- 22:15Speaker 1: out of here. I mean, there's not many dummies I
- 22:16Speaker 1: see in these comments. These people are really smart, but
- 22:19Speaker 1: they confuse that with wisdom, resilience and hard work. You see,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it's hard to compete with me because I've been homeless.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I've lost it all. I almost filed bankruptcy. I've written
- 22:34Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars check and given it to my
- 22:36Speaker 1: chief of staff and said if the income does not
- 22:38Speaker 1: revenue does not come in by This was Friday on Monday,
- 22:41Speaker 1: when payroll hits cash my check. That was back when
- 22:43Speaker 1: payroll for me was one hundred thousand dollars. I've slept
- 22:47Speaker 1: in my office. I never got a payroll. I never
- 22:50Speaker 1: had a fancy car, well, at least not at that time.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I remember my car that was forty twenty seven dollars
- 23:00Speaker 1: a month. For a long time, I didn't have a
- 23:04Speaker 1: fancy place to live. I mean, my god, even think
- 23:07Speaker 1: about this. I've been in business now for forty years ish,
- 23:12Speaker 1: thirty years of founding five, founding Operation Hope. I think
- 23:17Speaker 1: my first fancy house was fifteen years ago. Quasi fancy,
- 23:27Speaker 1: really fancy you know, seven years ago something like that.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Fancy cars, same thing. But I've been at this game
- 23:36Speaker 1: most of my life. I've been at this game most
- 23:37Speaker 1: longer than the folks who are in the comments, many
- 23:40Speaker 1: of them have been alive. I can believe I'm saying
- 23:42Speaker 1: that I feel forever young. But that is a that
- 23:46Speaker 1: is that you know, you hear your parents saying that. Here,
- 23:49Speaker 1: your uncle saying that. I never thought i'd say it,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but that is the true. And my uncle used to
- 23:53Speaker 1: tell me. My older folks would tell me to say
- 23:56Speaker 1: shut up and listen. Right. Do you know my I
- 24:01Speaker 1: could not have given my I couldn't give my John
- 24:05Speaker 1: O'Brien of twenty twenty could not give John O'Brien of
- 24:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty five advice. I'm not picking on you. I'm
- 24:13Speaker 1: trying to save you time, space and inconvenience. I'm trying
- 24:16Speaker 1: to make sure you don't trip and fail because this
- 24:18Speaker 1: world doesn't care about you. It's not about lover or hate. Today.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That was the old game. Today is increasingly radical indifference.
- 24:28Speaker 1: People who don't care enough about you to hate you. Rather,
- 24:32Speaker 1: they'd like you to fail, they'd like you to move aside.
- 24:36Speaker 1: They don't mind you playing in your ego and your drama.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And do you know the seventy six percent of all
- 24:42Speaker 1: luxury goods are bought by poor and struggling people, not
- 24:45Speaker 1: by the wealthy. They'd love you to buy all this
- 24:47Speaker 1: stuff and spend all your time going to clubs and
- 24:50Speaker 1: passing around business cards at two in the morning, where
- 24:52Speaker 1: you should be at home, studying, trying to impress somebody.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I don't know what you're trying to do leasing a car,
- 24:57Speaker 1: leasing an apartment, or or tipping over tipping the doorman,
- 25:01Speaker 1: or or buying a first class plane ticket to Paris
- 25:04Speaker 1: when you should when you you should be flying coach
- 25:07Speaker 1: to Detroit to try to get a contract or whatever
- 25:09Speaker 1: the deal is, you know, trying to floss with friends,
- 25:13Speaker 1: or or all these folks who are flying at different
- 25:15Speaker 1: places just when you get an Instagram photo. I don't
- 25:18Speaker 1: know what people are doing, but you're wasting time, and
- 25:21Speaker 1: all you really have is your time. You can mess
- 25:26Speaker 1: with my money, you can't mess with my time. I'm
- 25:28Speaker 1: ruthless about my time. You cannot waste my time. And
- 25:34Speaker 1: part of why I'm doing this table setting podcast episode
- 25:38Speaker 1: this one is I want to make sure that I'm
- 25:41Speaker 1: not wasting my time and wasting your time by giving
- 25:46Speaker 1: you the tools but not telling you what talents you
- 25:48Speaker 1: need to focus on. So it is the wisdom which
- 25:54Speaker 1: comes with time and experiences. It is the resilience. It
- 25:58Speaker 1: is taking no Forrovidemen is shaking things off. It's moving on,
- 26:02Speaker 1: getting through it, around it, to it, to get to it.
- 26:04Speaker 1: It's not talking bad. It's being bad. And being bad
- 26:07Speaker 1: is not loud. It's not punch it's not punching your chest.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It's not banging on your chest. It's not popping your collar.
- 26:15Speaker 1: It's popping payroll. It's paying your vendors on time. It's
- 26:21Speaker 1: getting multi year contracts. It's getting intellectual property rights in
- 26:25Speaker 1: your name. It's getting real estate in your portfolio. It's
- 26:30Speaker 1: owning patterns. It's having a business with employees. It's having
- 26:38Speaker 1: a business with a brand. It's showing up time for
- 26:41Speaker 1: showing up on time for meeting or letting people know
- 26:43Speaker 1: within fifteen minutes you'll be there. So it's not to
- 26:45Speaker 1: be disrespectful. It's listening to people who've made it out
- 26:49Speaker 1: of respect and regard, if nothing else, because you never
- 26:52Speaker 1: know who you're going to meet them on the playing
- 26:54Speaker 1: field of success. Be careful that toe you step on.
- 26:57Speaker 1: It maybe connected to the rear end. You've got to
- 26:59Speaker 1: kiss tom mark and keep in mind, truly successful people
- 27:03Speaker 1: don't need you. I don't need to do this right.
- 27:08Speaker 1: So do I remember people who were disrespectful to me?
- 27:11Speaker 1: You bet? I do? Do I make them pay a price? Nope?
- 27:14Speaker 1: But will I give them the time of day? Probably not. Again,
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's radical indifference. You need people to root for you.
- 27:24Speaker 1: You need people to be invested in you, which means
- 27:27Speaker 1: you need to be investable. Wisdom, resilience, hard work, basic stuff. Humility,
- 27:37Speaker 1: somebody said, people talking about humility. No, No, it's forgets
- 27:40Speaker 1: he being humility. We need to be loud and boastful, boteful, wasteful.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I don't know where people are getting this crazy stuff from.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Where in God's name is humility not an asset. I
- 27:51Speaker 1: may not be humble when I talk about my vision
- 27:53Speaker 1: and my ideas. I'm very bold about that, but I
- 27:57Speaker 1: have a humility about how I receive information and insights.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Can we disagree without being disagreeable? I'm not going to
- 28:05Speaker 1: reject a possible lesson on his face. You may say
- 28:10Speaker 1: ten minutes of discussion to me. If you're successful and
- 28:13Speaker 1: I may disagree with a lot of it. I might
- 28:16Speaker 1: disagree in part because I've never been to where you are,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and so I just have no context and already come
- 28:20Speaker 1: with an opinion. But there may be one little nugget
- 28:23Speaker 1: in there that made the whole conversation worthwhile. I need
- 28:26Speaker 1: to shut up and listen. Maybe this podcast, the episode
- 28:28Speaker 1: should be called shut up and Listen. So let's now
- 28:34Speaker 1: move to the mask of bravado. Surface level confidence is bravado.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Showing off is bravado. Looking rich is bravado. I don't
- 28:47Speaker 1: care about your chains, real or fake. I don't care
- 28:50Speaker 1: about the car you're driving. I don't care about the
- 28:54Speaker 1: house you're leasing or by whatever that you're in. I
- 28:58Speaker 1: don't care about all this stuff and all this this is,
- 29:00Speaker 1: this is, none of that matters. I care about your
- 29:03Speaker 1: balance sheet, your income statement. I care about your credit rating,
- 29:07Speaker 1: whether you pay your bills again, whether you're whether you
- 29:10Speaker 1: have institutional credit access as I do. I've done a
- 29:15Speaker 1: tunity of million dollar credit facility. Have you not you you,
- 29:18Speaker 1: but you know without a personal guarantee. I have unsecured
- 29:24Speaker 1: lines of credit for seven figures that get renewed repeatedly.
- 29:34Speaker 1: I pay my bills on time. I have an organization
- 29:38Speaker 1: as a four star Charity Navigator rating. That's my organization,
- 29:41Speaker 1: Operation Hope, which is like I've done in Bradstreet tripled
- 29:44Speaker 1: a bond rating. If you check the credit of my businesses,
- 29:48Speaker 1: all of them which there which are transparently available, you
- 29:51Speaker 1: see that we run an honorable enterprise. You go Teck
- 29:55Speaker 1: to check the Better Business Bureau and they have things
- 29:58Speaker 1: to say about how we do business. These are the
- 30:02Speaker 1: things that you want on your record, not an Instagram
- 30:07Speaker 1: post of you profiling for the record. Social media culture
- 30:14Speaker 1: is over indexing on designer clothes, least cars, fake luxury lifestyles,
- 30:20Speaker 1: posting a vacation on credit cards versus building a savings account.
- 30:24Speaker 1: It's not smart. Do you know what if you take
- 30:26Speaker 1: two hundred dollars a month for thirty five or forty years,
- 30:31Speaker 1: just that alone will make you a millionaire, just that
- 30:34Speaker 1: act alon. Imagine what we waste on stuff. It's not
- 30:41Speaker 1: about what you make, it's about what you keep. There's
- 30:44Speaker 1: one for you. You make money during the day, you
- 30:45Speaker 1: build was in your sleep. There's another one for you. Right,
- 30:49Speaker 1: you want boring businesses, Right, you want boring business advisors?
- 30:52Speaker 1: You don't want people going to the club with you
- 30:54Speaker 1: and going to want to hang out with you, and
- 30:56Speaker 1: they're your business advisors, They're going to rob you blind.
- 31:00Speaker 1: That's the last thing you wanted your boys who are
- 31:02Speaker 1: handling your money and your business hanging out with you.
- 31:04Speaker 1: If you are one to hang out. I was always
- 31:07Speaker 1: the one who hung in by the way when I
- 31:09Speaker 1: was coming up in business. This is a very interesting
- 31:10Speaker 1: point my boys, my friends growing up. This is why
- 31:13Speaker 1: I'm so I'm so strong on this right because I've
- 31:17Speaker 1: been to this I've been to this game before, I've
- 31:19Speaker 1: been to this party before, I've read this memo before.
- 31:24Speaker 1: All of my friends told me I was wasting my
- 31:27Speaker 1: time studying. They told me, is wasting my time working,
- 31:32Speaker 1: staying at home. Come out and hang with them. They'd say,
- 31:35Speaker 1: go have fun, be visible. I was like, that's cool,
- 31:39Speaker 1: go and do that. I mean, I have no I'm
- 31:40Speaker 1: not hating on your game. To go enjoy yourself fantastic.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I mean, I had no opinion about what they were doing.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Is knew what I was doing. Working from can't see
- 31:47Speaker 1: in the morning, I can't see at night. An entrepreneur
- 31:50Speaker 1: works eighteen hours day to keep him getting a job.
- 31:53Speaker 1: All I know is today, including a call I got
- 31:57Speaker 1: to say afternoon, These same people are calling out ask
- 32:00Speaker 1: me for a job or for contract, are mad at
- 32:03Speaker 1: me because they don't have either from me. You had
- 32:07Speaker 1: the same option I had. You chose them to invest
- 32:09Speaker 1: your time or use your time elsewhere, and you thought
- 32:12Speaker 1: you knew better than me. God bless you, fantastic, But
- 32:16Speaker 1: that didn't work out so well? So did it? Like
- 32:19Speaker 1: literally my folks who I grew up with, the folks
- 32:23Speaker 1: who just chose a different path, and I'm talking about here,
- 32:26Speaker 1: literally all of them, if they're still with us, A
- 32:31Speaker 1: lot of it is prison, probation, parole, unfortunately, and death.
- 32:34Speaker 1: As people know my story know the two people before
- 32:36Speaker 1: I was even nine years old close to me were
- 32:38Speaker 1: murdered right in front of me. But the rest of
- 32:41Speaker 1: them are just struggling. And while I'm writing checks, they're
- 32:47Speaker 1: trying to find someplace to cash when they're trying to
- 32:50Speaker 1: get a job. There's nothing wrong with a job, but
- 32:52Speaker 1: I think that in many ways they're smarter than me.
- 32:54Speaker 1: They were smarter than me, they had more intelligent than me,
- 32:57Speaker 1: but they didn't hustle better than me, they didn't study
- 32:59Speaker 1: better than me. They didn't get their put their head
- 33:00Speaker 1: down more than me. They weren't more resilient than me.
- 33:02Speaker 1: They weren't more consistent than me. I do the same
- 33:05Speaker 1: thing over and over and over and over again. That
- 33:08Speaker 1: is compounding. That's if you don't have inheritance in money,
- 33:13Speaker 1: you should have inheritance as in hustle and hustle on
- 33:15Speaker 1: the hustle creates more hustle. That plus organization in paperwork
- 33:19Speaker 1: creates a businessman or a business woman. Can I get
- 33:21Speaker 1: an amen? Bravado is buying liabilities to impress. Real confidence
- 33:36Speaker 1: is building assets to sustain. Good debt is tied to
- 33:41Speaker 1: something that could rise in acid value. Bad debt is
- 33:45Speaker 1: tied financing something that decreases in acid value, like financing
- 33:49Speaker 1: jewelry or whatever, or a lease for a Lamborghini you
- 33:53Speaker 1: can't afford, or whatever. The substance of confidence real confidence
- 33:59Speaker 1: is competence plus consistency plus humility. I would add also
- 34:06Speaker 1: self esteem, true self esteem. If I don't like me,
- 34:08Speaker 1: I'm not gonna like you. If I don't feel good
- 34:10Speaker 1: about me, I'm not gonna feel good about you. If I
- 34:11Speaker 1: don't love me, I can't love you. If I don't
- 34:13Speaker 1: respect me, I'm a clue how to respect you. If
- 34:16Speaker 1: I don't have a purpose in my life, I'll make
- 34:17Speaker 1: your life a living hell. Whatever goes around comes around.
- 34:20Speaker 1: So you can have hot you can have high confidence
- 34:23Speaker 1: and still have low self esteem. If you have low
- 34:27Speaker 1: self esteem, you to make the wrong choices, and you're
- 34:29Speaker 1: gonna start making emotional decisions. And I guarantee you that
- 34:31Speaker 1: every emotional decision is going to be a bad one. See,
- 34:34Speaker 1: you're getting real. Everybody listening to this podcast is getting
- 34:37Speaker 1: the benefits of the frustration that someone delivered to my
- 34:40Speaker 1: digital door this week. So please take it all in.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I'm giving you crib notes shortthand for success, so you
- 34:49Speaker 1: walk right around the stuff that just does not work.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I'm telling you this stuff will not work. I'm banking
- 34:56Speaker 1: my whole net worth and reputation on it. If I'm wrong,
- 35:00Speaker 1: don't listen to me another day. Right, But success is
- 35:04Speaker 1: pretty obvious, and so is failure. Wisdom equals time plus
- 35:11Speaker 1: scars plus reflection, rainbows after storms. How could you possibly
- 35:19Speaker 1: have wisdom at twenty five years of age? You have intelligence,
- 35:22Speaker 1: but you don't have the experiences. I was homeless at eighteens.
- 35:25Speaker 1: That didn't mean I had wisdom by twenty five. See
- 35:27Speaker 1: what I'm saying. I had a hustle, I had hard work.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I was smart, but I didn't have I mean the
- 35:32Speaker 1: stuff that I know now, Oh my god, the people
- 35:35Speaker 1: who I spent time trying to impress who I now
- 35:38Speaker 1: upon reflection, I didn't want to be like, oh my god,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I just wish I could go back and tell my
- 35:43Speaker 1: eighteen year old self by twenty five year old self,
- 35:45Speaker 1: my thirty year old self to knock it off. Stop
- 35:49Speaker 1: trying and impress somebody. You don't want to be like,
- 35:53Speaker 1: here's the financial layer. Here's I want to make smart sexy.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Here's here's sexy. A seven of the credit score. That's quiet,
- 36:01Speaker 1: confidence and open doors. A savings cushion, that's peace of mind.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It's not a flex investing monthly. That's discipline that builds freedom.
- 36:11Speaker 1: And I mean, you can invest. You can invest twenty
- 36:13Speaker 1: five dollars in a fractional investment account, don't have to
- 36:16Speaker 1: be big dollars. You can save fifty to one hundred bucks,
- 36:19Speaker 1: right And I just told you. You do that repeatedly, compounding,
- 36:23Speaker 1: you'll be a millionaire by time you're at age for retirement.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Confidence is when your bank statement speaks louder than your Instagram. Hello,
- 36:31Speaker 1: can I get an amen? The trap for millennials. This
- 36:37Speaker 1: is why this generation is vulnerable. I've already said you're brilliant,
- 36:41Speaker 1: but this is why you're vulnerable. Social media pressure to
- 36:44Speaker 1: be big by thirty. Just forget about it. Knock it off.
- 36:49Speaker 1: You'll lift a ninety or a hundred years of age
- 36:51Speaker 1: if you take care of yourself. This is a rounding error,
- 36:54Speaker 1: don't you know? Thirty is just the first leg of
- 37:00Speaker 1: the marathon, and you should be trying to get bass
- 37:02Speaker 1: and butts and not a home run. Hank Aaron had
- 37:06Speaker 1: record for the most home runs, but he also had
- 37:08Speaker 1: the record for the most strikeouts. So did my friend
- 37:09Speaker 1: Reggie Jackson. I knew Hank Aaron and Reggie Jackson. Reggie
- 37:13Speaker 1: still with us and is a great businessman, and believe me,
- 37:15Speaker 1: he'd be saying amen on all I'm talking about about
- 37:18Speaker 1: what really sustains the work. I mean, my man Alice
- 37:22Speaker 1: Rodriguez would say the same thing. He had a bunch
- 37:24Speaker 1: of strikeouts. But people don't only focus on the home runs.
- 37:28Speaker 1: The flashy part. Student debt plus rising living costs is
- 37:34Speaker 1: a vulnerability. Even though I think student loan debt if
- 37:37Speaker 1: you get your degree, could be could be an asset.
- 37:40Speaker 1: So I'm not hating on that, but I'm just saying
- 37:42Speaker 1: these are vulnerabilities that I didn't have in my generation
- 37:45Speaker 1: growing up, confusing intelligence, smart ideas with wisdom, proven decisions.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Please write that down, go back and listen to this
- 37:53Speaker 1: part again with somebody you love. Here's some stats for you.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Average first time millionaire a each fifty seven. That's a
- 38:02Speaker 1: sustainable millionaire. Anybody can make money for a minute, you
- 38:05Speaker 1: can make it three, four or five years later. It's gone.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Seventy percent of all professional athletes bankrupt in five years.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Seventy percent of all those win the lottery. As far
- 38:15Speaker 1: as farther concerned, if you're doing crypto trading or you're
- 38:19Speaker 1: doing I have no problem with crypto. I'm I'm just
- 38:21Speaker 1: saying this is this is literally true because most crypto
- 38:25Speaker 1: currencies failed, by the way. But if you're a future
- 38:28Speaker 1: you're you're an option's future trade you aah, you're a
- 38:30Speaker 1: day trader whatever. Okay, you're you're trying to make quick
- 38:32Speaker 1: money whatever. How are you trying to However, you're trying
- 38:34Speaker 1: to do it right. You just want it now. The
- 38:38Speaker 1: chance of you being bankrupt are broke in five to
- 38:43Speaker 1: ten years is about seventy percent because you don't have
- 38:46Speaker 1: the discipline, and because there is no if if you
- 38:49Speaker 1: find a free lunch, it's probably stale. Again. Success only
- 38:53Speaker 1: becomes before the work, work, because it's alphab because in
- 38:56Speaker 1: the dictionary, because it's alphabetical. Every place else is just
- 38:59Speaker 1: the work. And it takes twenty years to change a culture,
- 39:02Speaker 1: including your own, to build a culture. That's Quincy Jones quote, right.
- 39:06Speaker 1: But folks don't want to wait twenty years. They want
- 39:08Speaker 1: it in two years. Well, you can get something in
- 39:10Speaker 1: two years, but it may not be sustainable. You may
- 39:12Speaker 1: re rearranging the deck chairs and the Titanic, but it's blinging, singing,
- 39:16Speaker 1: and people to tell you what you want to hear.
- 39:18Speaker 1: And you think that what you're doing right now is
- 39:20Speaker 1: going to last. Don't believe what I'm saying. Investigating for yourself.
- 39:27Speaker 1: First generation makes it, second generation spends it. Third generation
- 39:30Speaker 1: loses it because the second generation didn't learn the lessons
- 39:36Speaker 1: of the second and the third generation just thought it
- 39:38Speaker 1: was going to last forever. And if you made the
- 39:42Speaker 1: money and you didn't have hurt or pain tied to it.
- 39:45Speaker 1: You think that it's here forever, that you don't have
- 39:49Speaker 1: to work hard for it, and you give it away easy.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I'm not giving away ten thousand dollars. I know what
- 39:55Speaker 1: ten dollars. I'm not giving away two thousand dollars, and
- 39:58Speaker 1: I can afford both easily. I'm not giving away at
- 40:01Speaker 1: dime right, I still pick up a dime by seat
- 40:04Speaker 1: on the ground. By the way, when I ran a business,
- 40:09Speaker 1: multi multi business, I sold for one hundred and twenty
- 40:11Speaker 1: million dollars. Actually my partners had wired me in this example.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I don't want to say exactly that much, but it
- 40:17Speaker 1: was tens of millions of dollars. Do you know they
- 40:20Speaker 1: never asked me for a financial statement or not audit.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I didn't want anyway, and gave it to them. But
- 40:26Speaker 1: they just knew I wasn't going to go rent a limousine.
- 40:28Speaker 1: They knew I wasn't going to go do five star
- 40:31Speaker 1: hotels with penthouse suites with their money. They knew I
- 40:35Speaker 1: wasn't going to rent a jet or LEAs a jet,
- 40:38Speaker 1: or do net jets or trying to plot. They knew
- 40:41Speaker 1: I was flying at most business class, but it really
- 40:44Speaker 1: had fly coach and get upgraded. They knew I was
- 40:46Speaker 1: going to treat them money like it was mine, with humility.
- 40:54Speaker 1: The average millionaire, first time millionaire, fifty seven years of age.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Most overnight success, It's took fifteen to fifteen years of
- 41:02Speaker 1: grinding to get there. And every legitimate millionaire, a real one,
- 41:09Speaker 1: has real estate, boring real estate in their portfolio. The
- 41:13Speaker 1: path to real success keys to move from bravado to
- 41:17Speaker 1: true confidence hard work, show up every day. It's not
- 41:22Speaker 1: in late, long lunch, leave early, show up early, stay
- 41:25Speaker 1: late and forget a break. Resilience fail, learn, keep moving,
- 41:32Speaker 1: rent and repeat wisdom, Learn from mentors, mistakes and time. Purpose.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Anchor in something bigger than your ego. I cannot stress
- 41:46Speaker 1: that enough. Folks I see coming with me with ego
- 41:50Speaker 1: and all that drama, I would never invest in them.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I wouldn't tell them. I don't want to fight, I
- 41:55Speaker 1: don't want an argument. I just keep it moving. Fine.
- 41:58Speaker 1: That works for you. You think that works for you. Great.
- 42:00Speaker 1: There are nobody the biggest, the most successful people. I
- 42:04Speaker 1: don't mean the loudest people. I'm not people. I'm not
- 42:07Speaker 1: people who are rocking in mic. I'm talking about folks
- 42:09Speaker 1: who own the mic. The folks who own the stage,
- 42:12Speaker 1: the folks who own the venues, the folks who own
- 42:15Speaker 1: the licensing rights, the publishing rights, the folks who own
- 42:19Speaker 1: the hotels you have. There's a family that owned the
- 42:22Speaker 1: Four Seasons Hotel on Doheiny. I know the family, the
- 42:25Speaker 1: four Season of Donhee or first hotel on Dolheini in
- 42:29Speaker 1: Los Angeles. I know, I've known the family for thirty years. Now.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You will never not know their name, even though you
- 42:34Speaker 1: know the names of everybody coming through their doors because
- 42:36Speaker 1: they're celebrities. But the celebrities just are renting a room.
- 42:39Speaker 1: This guy owns the room. You have no idea who
- 42:41Speaker 1: he is. That's gangster, right. Well, true wealth is quiet, right,
- 42:48Speaker 1: or it's not intentionally loud. Financial layers start automatic savings.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Confidence in knowing you've, knowing you've you're covered right invests
- 43:00Speaker 1: two hundred three hundars a month early. The boring millionaire
- 43:03Speaker 1: player just told you'll be a millionaire by a sixty five.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Do that two hundred dollars a month. Build a credit
- 43:08Speaker 1: to prime seven hundred credit score, because that's truly gangster.
- 43:12Speaker 1: The computer just says yes at midnight to whatever it
- 43:14Speaker 1: is reasonable you ask for own something, a stock, a home,
- 43:19Speaker 1: a small business, something sustainable, something real, something foundational, something
- 43:24Speaker 1: I don't want to buy. I learned to stop chasing
- 43:27Speaker 1: the appearance of success and start building the infrastructure of success.
- 43:32Speaker 1: What I'm doing now is building economic plumbing for an
- 43:35Speaker 1: entire group of people, everybody who's struggling. That's why I
- 43:38Speaker 1: have fifteen hundred offices, fifteen hundred offices in forty two states.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Nobody has infrastructure like that serving the people who are
- 43:48Speaker 1: trying to come up. No one right. I've done that
- 43:51Speaker 1: by grinding, by working, by having my head down. And
- 43:55Speaker 1: that's a seventy five million dollars a year plus budget.
- 43:57Speaker 1: That's just one organization, not the other. There four divisions
- 44:01Speaker 1: that I have through John O'Brien Enterprises. And my wife
- 44:04Speaker 1: will tell you all I do is work, and I
- 44:07Speaker 1: love it. It's not work for me. I enjoy it.
- 44:09Speaker 1: But a lot of my friends who have the yachts
- 44:12Speaker 1: and the this and the that, they'll tell me, John, here,
- 44:14Speaker 1: that's throw me the keys. You can hear it. You
- 44:16Speaker 1: can take my yacht or take my car because they
- 44:18Speaker 1: don't have time to drive them. They're time to use
- 44:19Speaker 1: it because they're they're off fulfilling commitments. A lot of
- 44:25Speaker 1: my stuff sits in the garage. I love racing. Anybody
- 44:28Speaker 1: knows me. I love driving race cars. If I can
- 44:31Speaker 1: get there one day a month, two days a month,
- 44:33Speaker 1: my god, that's a treat. But I do that after
- 44:36Speaker 1: the work, after the work. At some point I'll be
- 44:41Speaker 1: able to enjoy this much more time. But at the moment,
- 44:45Speaker 1: I'm in the venue, and capitalism is a gladiator sport.
- 44:48Speaker 1: If I don't take the seat, somebody will take it
- 44:49Speaker 1: from me. And if I'm not keep it continuing to learn,
- 44:52Speaker 1: somebody's going to clock me because they've been learning while
- 44:56Speaker 1: I was out flossing, which is not going to happen
- 45:00Speaker 1: to me, by the way I may go out and
- 45:02Speaker 1: not going out that way. You want to be Netflix,
- 45:07Speaker 1: not Blockbuster. You want to be Walmart, Amazon, not Sears
- 45:13Speaker 1: or Macy's or not Mason. Sorry, seers are Macy's is
- 45:16Speaker 1: still with us and still thriving. Actually seers are Kmart
- 45:21Speaker 1: or J C. Pennies which is still hanging on, which
- 45:23Speaker 1: just barely. But you get my point. Are we projecting
- 45:31Speaker 1: or are we building? Here's my question to you. Are
- 45:36Speaker 1: we investing or are we spending there's a difference. I
- 45:39Speaker 1: think I'm investing my time. I might be wasting my
- 45:42Speaker 1: time if people are not getting them INMO. That's what
- 45:45Speaker 1: frustrated me about the comments. I was taking my time
- 45:48Speaker 1: to try to answer what I thought was an intelligent
- 45:50Speaker 1: set of questions, having a truly robust discussion, and folks
- 45:54Speaker 1: just want to say something they think it's funny or cool,
- 45:57Speaker 1: which meant that that just wasted my entire air time.
- 46:00Speaker 1: It didn't offend me because not one of that, not
- 46:02Speaker 1: none of that affects my self esteem and my belief
- 46:04Speaker 1: in my one ounce of my life. It just wasted
- 46:07Speaker 1: my time. I want to encourage humility, mentorship, and patience. Again.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I've followed my leaders, people who I who I have
- 46:17Speaker 1: great relationships today. I follow them one year, two years,
- 46:20Speaker 1: I emails occasional meetings, you know, two years, ten years. Right.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I invested in them so they would invest, so they
- 46:28Speaker 1: would see the investment back in meeting that was worthwhile.
- 46:31Speaker 1: But I always made sure my signature was listening more
- 46:35Speaker 1: than I talked. Here's a call to action for you.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Audit your finances and audit your time, and audit your environment.
- 46:43Speaker 1: If you hang around nine bro people you're going to
- 46:45Speaker 1: be the tenth at around nine loud people, You're going
- 46:47Speaker 1: to be the tenth. You hang around my nine bochous people,
- 46:49Speaker 1: my nine arrogant folks. We confuse confidence with arrogance because
- 46:55Speaker 1: we don't see a lot of confidence. Confidences not boastful,
- 46:59Speaker 1: it's not. That's not confidence. That is arrogance, and arrogance
- 47:02Speaker 1: is tied to insecurity. When you're confident, you you're competent.
- 47:06Speaker 1: There's no need to scream and holler. Your work speaks
- 47:09Speaker 1: for yourself, for yours, for yourself, and for what you're building.
- 47:14Speaker 1: It speaks for your work, is your brand. If your
- 47:19Speaker 1: wealth is in your closet or your car, you're living bravado.
- 47:25Speaker 1: You can't fake wisdom, real folks, we'll see you coming.
- 47:32Speaker 1: You can't fake wealth. Build both the right way. And
- 47:38Speaker 1: if you have some money left over from your first budget,
- 47:41Speaker 1: which is your living budget and your teching budget, with
- 47:43Speaker 1: your investment budget, and you got it in the room
- 47:46Speaker 1: in your third budget, which is your flossing and enjoyment budget,
- 47:49Speaker 1: God bless you. Go least that ferrari or buy it.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Go take on your vacation. Go go. I have a
- 47:55Speaker 1: nice watch. I've got I've got nice things right, but
- 47:58Speaker 1: make sure you're taking it from the right pocket and
- 48:02Speaker 1: the right pool, and don't be a fool. So this
- 48:08Speaker 1: has been hopefully helpful to you that mindset is more
- 48:16Speaker 1: valuable than money. Mindset actually is wealth. That you can
- 48:26Speaker 1: be educated, but that doesn't mean you have wisdom. You
- 48:29Speaker 1: can win the battle, but you may not be winning
- 48:31Speaker 1: the war. You may be stepping in mess and not
- 48:34Speaker 1: stepping over it. If you do this wrong, somebody's gonna
- 48:40Speaker 1: tell you then let the doorknot hit you where the
- 48:42Speaker 1: dog should have bit you. If you do this wrong,
- 48:47Speaker 1: you may be stepping on the toe of somebody who's
- 48:49Speaker 1: rear and you've got to kiss a little later. If
- 48:52Speaker 1: you do this wrong, you've made the cast which you
- 48:55Speaker 1: didn't build a wealth. If you do this wrong, you've
- 48:59Speaker 1: built you burn the bridge that you got to cross
- 49:01Speaker 1: over later. If you do this wrong, nobody's going to
- 49:05Speaker 1: care when you find out that you're out of air.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I want you to win. I want those you know
- 49:16Speaker 1: to win. If you know somebody, this doesn't relate to you.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Your mindset's right, tight and full of light. But you
- 49:24Speaker 1: know somebody needs to listen to this message. Share this
- 49:27Speaker 1: podcast with them, ask them to subscribe because I'm this
- 49:32Speaker 1: is my ministry of finance every week. No one else
- 49:34Speaker 1: is going to talk to you like this. They don't
- 49:36Speaker 1: want to hurt your feelings. They don't want you to
- 49:38Speaker 1: turn away from them. I care about you enough to
- 49:40Speaker 1: tell you the truth, and the truth is that I
- 49:43Speaker 1: can't guarantee you that being positive is going to make
- 49:46Speaker 1: you a success, but I absolutely guarantee you that being
- 49:49Speaker 1: negative and rude and nasty and arrogant is going to
- 49:56Speaker 1: make you fail. No one wants to be bothered with
- 49:59Speaker 1: all that drama. No one wants to hear all of that.
- 50:02Speaker 1: It sounds cool, but you look like a fool. Real
- 50:07Speaker 1: success whispers. This is John O'Brien. This is Money and Wealth.
