- 2:02State's obviously, he's going to join us to talk about that. Plus Tristan
- 2:06Levit, who's a candidate for a House of Delegates, will be stopping by.
- 2:07Doctor Casey Sacks. Abridge Valley is here, and Hannah Gardner from the
- 2:10Canal Charleston Humaine Association is here with this week's not Me Please Pet of the
- 2:15Week. But before we get to all that, yesterday, to the surprise
- 2:19of some Canawa County Commissioner Carper filed to run for re election for the county
- 2:23commission and Commissioner Carper joins us now. Commissioner, Good morning, welcome to
- 2:28the show. Well, good morning, Dave. Were you surprised when the
- 2:31bulldogs won? The Georgia Bulldogs? Yeah? Well who else what the dogs
- 2:37are? Well, there are no other dogs as far as I'm concerned.
- 2:39The Georgia Bulldog. I'm always I'm a diehard, but haven't been since I
- 2:42was a kid, a big Georgia Bulldogs. Yeah, so, Commissioner,
- 2:47I think there had been some some speculation that you was questionable. Right now,
- 2:55I give the answers. I haven't given the question yet, but I
- 3:00know what the question is going to be. Yeah, you said it twice,
- 3:02now, all right, speculation I wouldn't run, yes, some reason.
- 3:06Well the speculation has ended. Okay, you made it official earlier yesterday,
- 3:12I guess, or that's when it all came out. Yeah, about
- 3:15for four or fifteen something like that. If you go back and look,
- 3:17you won't find a foul photo of me. Ever, I think in twenty
- 3:22years, registering, I mean registering is dropping a piece of paper at the
- 3:27clerk. Saw. It is, it is, and it's become a lot
- 3:30bigger than that because people make a big deal. Oh it, it really
- 3:32doesn't. You get the same piece of paper no matter what. So I
- 3:36suspect other people will file for that office and they'll make a big show out
- 3:40of them. Usually you have people that are failed candidates, they've lost a
- 3:44couple of races, and they'll foul looking for something to do. So we'll
- 3:47see, it's up to the voters of Kennall County, pure and simple,
- 3:53and it's no singer. There had been some controversy surrounding you of the last
- 3:55year or so. We talked about that. We don't know what the future
- 3:59holds, but you feel you have a shot to win reelection. Now,
- 4:02I mean the voters have have done it every year, so I wasn't a
- 4:05fould if I didn't think I could. Right right, you stepped down as
- 4:11commissioned President Lance Wheeler is a new president, with your blessing. With your
- 4:14blessing, I may add, why did you choose to step down as president?
- 4:17Well, I chose to step down for a couple of reasons. Number
- 4:20one, I don't think it's any secret that others wanted that position. That's
- 4:26number one. Number Two, I'd held it for twenty years. You to
- 4:30be twenty years or someone breaks that record. So I'm in good shape for
- 4:33twenty years. Well, we wish you the best of luck. What do
- 4:36you want the voters of Kanawak County to know? Sir? Whenever I have
- 4:40any any other candidate for office on the show, I always say, I'll
- 4:44give you a thirty or so seconds uninterrupted. Why should people vote for you?
- 4:47So now that you are going to run for reelection, Commissioner Krper,
- 4:50what do you want the people of Kanawa County to know about you? For
- 4:55over twenty five years, I've had the privilege of serving the people of county.
- 5:00I chose to run again. It's not my seat, it's your seat.
- 5:05It's up to the voters. I think if we'd spend a little more
- 5:10time on my record here today, I've got a pretty good record, I
- 5:14believe, but that's up to the voters. So I want them to know
- 5:15that I'm willing to continue to serve it. To allow me to do so,
- 5:19it would be a great privilege under honor, talk about that record.
- 5:23Give me a couple of examples of things. And I know it's only like
- 5:27a five minute segment, but give me give me a couple of examples of
- 5:30things maybe here during your last term that you were particularly proud of. Sir
- 5:32Well, I don't really consider the last term any more important than my first
- 5:36term or the terms in between. I mean, there's no secret we wouldn't
- 5:41have the public Safety Complex with the Sheriff's Department and the Prosecute Attorney's office if
- 5:47it wasn't for me. That sounds like I'm bragging. And of course the
- 5:50taxpayers paid for it, so I know that. But I negotiated to work
- 5:55with the power company and got the building. I think that's made a big
- 5:59difference for public safety in Kennall County. Everyone agrees. I believe that I
- 6:03had a lot to do with saving Jaeger Airport, not once, but at
- 6:06least twice. The list is pretty long. You don't have enough time in
- 6:11five minutes. If you want to invite me back, I'll do it.
- 6:14And it sounds like I'm bragging, but you asked the question. Yeah,
- 6:16I'm trying to answer it. Well, you're always welcome. You're always welcome
- 6:19on this show, and I would be remiss, sir. And you've been
- 6:23on the show since these allegations have come out. Is there anything you'd like
- 6:26to say about about some allegations that have been floated around today? You brought
- 6:30it up. You brought it up five or six seven times. I think
- 6:32there's probably enough in one five minutes. Okay. I want to give you
- 6:35the opportunity if you'd like to time out, but if you don't, that's
- 6:38fine too. Well, Well, I did comment on it. I've known
- 6:43my statement on that's all I appreciate. I appreciate the op turning be on
- 6:46your show. All right, Well, you're always welcome, sir. We'll
- 6:49talk to you again soon. I appreciate it. Thank you, thank you,
- 6:51thank you. Come mister Kent. Carper. Again, it is nine
- 6:56fourteen. It did surprise a lot of people today because there was speculation.
- 7:00But again, you know, I reached out to Commissioner Carper. I said,
- 7:04would you like to go on the show and talk about it? And
- 7:06he did his He did his part, and who knows. And it is
- 7:11important to note that in this country everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and
- 7:17that there have been no charges filed against King Carper. So I'm not saying
- 7:21that there won't be or there will be. I don't know, and I
- 7:24don't have a crystal ball, but nothing as of yet. Man, he
- 7:29is running for re election. I keep hearing he's a Democrat. Of course,
- 7:32we had a Republican person on the show yesterday that's going to be running,
- 7:36and I keep hearing that there's going to be at least one more Democrat.
- 7:40I hear speculation that as somebody who's very very well known in the political
- 7:44realm as a Democratic former statewide office holder is going to be filing for county
- 7:48commission. But they've got the rest of today until midnight tomorrow to file.
- 7:54So let's move on. Let's bring in a Handah Gardner with the Knaw charst
- 7:58Humaine Association with this week's Adopt Me PA Pet of the Week. Hannah,
- 8:01good morning. How are you? I'm gret, how are you? I
- 8:03am doing fine? You could follow up, can't carper? Now we get
- 8:07to go to talk about dog. So here we go. Awesome, let's
- 8:13talk about this dog known as Martha Stewart. That's the dog's name, and
- 8:18as always our doc Mey, please put the week's pictures posted Dave Allen Radio
- 8:22on Facebook and the Dave Allen Show on ex tell us about Martha Stewart.
- 8:28All right, well, Martha Stewart. She is a very sweet girl.
- 8:31She is a female. I don't think she's fixed yet, but of course
- 8:37she will be before she leaves the shelter if we can get her on the
- 8:39schedule in time. If not, she'll always be brought back to be six.
- 8:45And she is around one year and six fish months. Again, we
- 8:48estimate by their guns and their teeth, so it could be a roundabout,
- 8:54but she is around a year old. She has microchips vaccinated as astray to
- 9:01us, along with what we assume is maybe her brother. And his name
- 9:07if anybody's curious about him, is Notorious Doog. So yeah, he and
- 9:13her are both available, but she is our start today. So she's very
- 9:18very friendly, very very good with children from what we have seen in our
- 9:24care. Of course, we always it as caution with kids and dogs,
- 9:28and as well as other animals as well. She is good with other animals
- 9:33dogs for sure, we know I'm not sure about cats, but she does
- 9:37put for commer dogs. When she's in the playgroup, she is kind of
- 9:41staying to herself or hanging out with her brother, but she does kind of
- 9:48hang around the other commer dogs. But I think that's just because she's more
- 9:52sha she's more kind of hesitant to going out and playing with all the other
- 9:56dogs. I think maybe once she warms up, but she'll definitely come out
- 10:01of her shawl a little bit. But she is pretty laid back. She
- 10:05will play every now and then. But she's a good family dog, I
- 10:09would say. So. She is a social butterfly with people. She definitely
- 10:13loves people. She can be a little bit shy at first going too fast
- 10:18with her and stuff, but she's very very sweet and she is ready for
- 10:20a good home. And I believe she is around thirty one thirty two pounds.
- 10:26She's probably not going to get any bigger, right, I mean,
- 10:28that would be a good discussion. She's definitely not going to get any bigger.
- 10:31Might get she might get a little fatter like I do, But you
- 10:35mean she's not going to probably grow much, right, right? Should I
- 10:37get bicker? But she ain't getting bigger? Yeah? I get you.
- 10:41Let me talk about something you have going on to Shelter Hannah, and it's
- 10:43called this pick your Price deal through Sunday. Tell us about that. Yeah,
- 10:48so pick your Price. We used to do that more often than not,
- 10:52but recently we've been doing a bunch of other events lately. But this
- 10:56event is called pick your Price and it goes on until Sunday, which is
- 11:01the twenty eighth. We included pretty much all of the animals this time.
- 11:09We included cats. We included all of our adult dogs, and then most
- 11:13of our puppies are included as well. We try not to include the ones
- 11:16that are rather new, just to give them a chance to get a home,
- 11:20or if they have been in our care for a while, or if
- 11:22they've been medical cases or anything like that. It's really just dependent. You'll
- 11:28have to look on their cages or ask one of the staff members. But
- 11:31most of the puppies are included, so I would definitely go and look at
- 11:37them. We are open from twelve to six today, so if you don't
- 11:41come today, if you come tomorrow or Sunday, we're up in until five
- 11:45twelve to five, but definitely come and check it out. It is pick
- 11:48your price, so that is literally picking your price whatever it is that you
- 11:52have or want to pay. It can be more than the adoption, less
- 11:56than the adoption, or it can be very very minimal. But we are
- 12:00just thankful that people are trying to help sign homes, cities babies. Absolutely,
- 12:03before we let you go, give you about thirty or forty seconds here.
- 12:05What are you currently in need of at the shelter, Hannah? Yes,
- 12:11so we have I believe upwards of like two hundred and seventy two hundred
- 12:16and seventy two something like that animals in our care, So we definitely still
- 12:20always are needing blankets, sheets, and maybe not like the big, big
- 12:28big comforters or anything like that, but just big blankets and sheets and stuff
- 12:31like that. Dog food, we are always in need of dog food lately
- 12:35where we've had so many animals, Puppy food is definitely something we need and
- 12:41colors and leashes is something that we always need. And then we also have
- 12:46our wish lists on our website for Chewy and Amazon, and then we also
- 12:50have our wish lists for just physical donations that you can bring up to the
- 12:54shelter. And if you can't donate, you can always volunteer and help out
- 12:58or just spread the word. You're always thankful for everything that we can get,
- 13:03all right, and I appreciate it and we will talk to you soon.
- 13:05Thanks a lot, thank you and a gardener again from kennaw Charlesty,
- 13:09Maine Association. With this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week, let's
- 13:13review Martha Stewart is her name. Pictures posted on Dave Allen Radio on Facebook
- 13:16and The Dave Allen Show on x She's a female came in as astray with
- 13:22what they believe to be her brother. The brother's name, by the way,
- 13:24the notorious dog. I love that they can be adopted separately, though
- 13:28they don't necessarily have to go together. One years old, vaccinated microchip not
- 13:35fixed yet but will be. Would probably do best with calmer, laid back
- 13:37dogs. Likes to be alone, super sweet and loves attentions. And cuddles
- 13:43would be good on aleish around thirty two pounds. That's about as good as
- 13:45she will get. So if you're looking about as big as you get,
- 13:48I should say if you're looking for a perfect small dog, this would be
- 13:52your dogg And you go over to Dave Allen Radio and Facebook or the Dave
- 13:56Allen Show and X take a look at the picture and then get in touch
- 13:58with Hannah and Foks at the charlest Ney Main Association and let's get Martha Stewart

- 14:33a couple of texts here, let me see. Uh, okay, I
- 14:39can not reading that. One text says, Uh, Commission Carper came across
- 14:43his little jerk on the radio. Well, I don't. I don't know
- 14:46if I would go along with that or not, but that's the opinion of
- 14:48the texture. Uh that interview was embarrassing, says a texture. Well maybe
- 14:54it was. Uh maybe I'm the one that made it embarrassing. I don't
- 14:58know. H let me see, okay text, So so what I take
- 15:07from that interviews? Mister Carper was dodgy. The allegations question, didn't you
- 15:09want to say whether they're true or not? I was accused of doing something
- 15:13like that, I would at least say the allegations are totally false. And
- 15:16that did not do that now or ever, says a texture. Text says
- 15:22at some point, can't you just want to enjoy life? Let it go?
- 15:28You can barely walk? Okay? Texture says that interview is awkward.
- 15:33Well, I do read. I do make interviews awkward sometimes, tex says
- 15:39Dave All and Kent Carper. There's no more awkward and cringey interview in the
- 15:43radio every single time. Just saying I don't know if that's because of me
- 15:46or because it can't. I don't know which one it is. Is all

- 18:32Oh, you know, just just plain radio. I don't know how
- 18:36I how I recover from that, but anyway, I mean, you're living
- 18:40the dream. I am living the dream as they say, I've I've been
- 18:42living this same dream for thirty six years almost, but it's going out a
- 18:45Bridge Valley. I know you've had a lot of things actually over the last
- 18:48couples looking, you know, kind of scrolling on the social media there,
- 18:52and I mean there's been a lot of stuff going on out there. You
- 18:56had your win Academy talk about that and talk about the information, and the
- 19:00time is yours, doctor, So I actually, first I want to hand
- 19:03you an invitation. What Dave's getting right now is we have our ten year
- 19:07anniversary coming up in the college turns ten and so we're having a galla at
- 19:11the Clay Center and we'd love for you to come in, and the entire
- 19:15listening audience is also welcome to a ten Please go online and get your tickets.
- 19:19It should be a really fun celebraty a fancy thing. You sure you
- 19:22want me there? Yeah, I mean, I think you can pull off
- 19:25Fancy Dave obviously haven't met me. Okay, cowboy boots are welcome, all
- 19:30right, all right, all right, very good. But we're pretty excited
- 19:32about it. The college has never had something quite like this before. We're
- 19:36getting very jazzed for quite a lineup of some wonderful sponsors and a fun EMC
- 19:41and it should be a good night. It should be a really fun time.
- 19:44And again, this is the tenth anniversary, the tenth anniversary of the
- 19:45college. We're so young, Yes you are, you are indeed, so
- 19:49talk about some of these other things going on here. You get this Win
- 19:52Academy. They had an information session I think help this week. Was that
- 19:56last night? It was it was last night. It was terrific for I
- 20:00haven't heard you on the show before. Doctor Sachs talk about what the Wind
- 20:02Academy is. So, the Wind Academy is a public charter school for eleventh
- 20:04and twelfth graders. It's a high school experience that's specifically designed to make sure
- 20:10students can get a nursing degree. And we're expanding in the fall to allow
- 20:14students who want to get a manufacturing to degree to go after that, and
- 20:18so a lot of other states have these early college academies. It's just new
- 20:22here in West Virginia. And the idea is, how do we get you
- 20:25on a pathway and how do we make sure that you're getting the same job
- 20:27and the same experience that students have who come to us as traditional college students.
- 20:33So it's very boutique and it's designed for students who already know that they
- 20:37want this experience. And our info sessions have been so fun because students are
- 20:44bringing their grandparents, They're bringing their parents and their older siblings. We have
- 20:48a couple sisters who I know the grandfather was trying to talk the older sister
- 20:52and coming with her little sister. So that's all been really wonderful just to
- 20:56see families come out and talk about what a great experience this has been for
- 21:00their kids and what a good opportunity it is for kids who want to sign
- 21:03up. And you mentioned parents and grandparents, and I know a lot of
- 21:07our folks that are listening right now know what the term FAFSA means. That's
- 21:11financial Well I don't exactly what does it actually its financial aid, but what
- 21:15does it actually stand for? The Federal Free application for federal student aid.
- 21:18Okay, So at the federal government, if you want access to federal dollars
- 21:22to go to college, they make you fill out this form. They've changed
- 21:26the form this year. I was gonna say, haven't there been some problems
- 21:30with the form? It's it's been kind of rocky. The intention was Congress
- 21:36said make the form shorter. It's too long. It's fifty pages long.
- 21:38This is ridiculous. Make it shorter. So the Department of Education in DC
- 21:44has been trying to make it shorter, and it has not been a smooth
- 21:47transition. The new form is supposed to pull data directly from your tax return
- 21:52and directly from sources the Feds already have. It's not working quite as they
- 21:56hoped it would. So once they get the bugs iarn out. We are
- 22:00really hopeful that it'll make the process easier for families. We'll have kids who
- 22:03are in the foster care system who don't have access to parents information to fill
- 22:07out the form, and so this should help. But we're not there yet.
- 22:11And that you all offering some help with this program for parents and grandparents.
- 22:17So Bridge Valley is doing Fastfoo workshops for folks. We want to make
- 22:21sure that people understand how to fill out the form. I know when I
- 22:23was a student, my parents had never gone to college, and so my
- 22:26mom said, great, fill out whatever forms you have to fill out.
- 22:30And I remember sitting at the kitchen table crying, being so frustrated trying to
- 22:33fill out this form. And so we try and make it easier than that
- 22:37for families. We don't want other kids to have the same experience that is
- 22:41just that frustration of not knowing how to do it. And I do want
- 22:44to mention that I get some information from the Kanaw County Board of Education last
- 22:48week. I was kind of going back, or actually earlier this week,
- 22:49and I think I'm working with the Brianna and the folks in the Board's office,
- 22:53and I'm going to have someone from the Kanaw County School System on the
- 22:59show next week talk about that because they're doing some things as well, because
- 23:03it is very, very difficult, and you know, going back, as
- 23:07you said, you were someone like myself, my parents also did not go
- 23:11to college. I think my mother made taking a couple classes here there,
- 23:15but it did not have a college education. And sometimes you're asking people to
- 23:18fill out forms and maybe have zero experience with them. Now it can be
- 23:22dated and let's be honest. Let's be honest, actors. Acts. The
- 23:26government doesn't always make things easier. No, No, it's all well intentioned,
- 23:30but really more complicated than any one of us might make it. But
- 23:33you're right. Kennaugh County Schools is doing FASSO workshops for students and families and
- 23:37we're a part of that too. We're really excited to be able to help
- 23:40reach out into the school district and really anything we can do to help our
- 23:44families be able to get access because so many folks can get this money and
- 23:48have then their college costs be much much lower. With the West Virginia invest
- 23:52Grant in community colleges, that makes the tuition covered for families even if you
- 23:56don't qualify for the federal aid, but you still have to fill out the
- 24:00federal form. So we want to help folks. Appreciate you doing that,
- 24:03and I know, as you said, the folks in the Kaana County school
- 24:06System and another school system around the area trying to help out with that as
- 24:07well. We're talking with doctor Casey Sachsonbridge Valley, The Dave Allen Show,
- 24:11and five of Elves brides who departed by Pinnacle Consultants, the only accredited commercial
- 24:15lab in the state for asbestos and mold as Bessels was banned in some building
- 24:18products, but not banned for all products in the US. Don't expose your
- 24:21family or workers to as bestis mold or lead paint. With Pinnacle Consultants,
- 24:25they offer real estate environmental assessments for hazardous materials and the air quality. That
- 24:29is at Pinnacle Corp. Dot net. Because what you don't know can't hurt
- 24:32you, doctor Sax. Earlier this week, there was an open house about
- 24:34the FAME program, and we spent a lot of time talking about Fame.
- 24:37Not the Irene Karra song, but obscure reference there. So tell us about
- 24:42the FAME program and tell us about the open house. Yes, so that
- 24:45FAME is the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education. It's a group that Toyota actually
- 24:51started in Kentucky and they've replicated here and so the Federation is a group of
- 24:56manufacturers who have collaboratively said we don't want to steal talent from each other,
- 25:00we want to help grow talent in our community. So they pick an education
- 25:03provider. They picked Bridge Valley and they work with the Putnam County Development Authority
- 25:07to help recruit students to come into manufacturing, and the fame businesses select people
- 25:14and they work three days a week at a business and they come to Bridge
- 25:17Valley two days a week for school. Business pays them while they're going to
- 25:21school, and we do all of the classroom instructions so that they are able
- 25:25to go into advanced manufacturing technology. Most of those fame companies hire students when
- 25:30they graduate, about nine out of ten end up with jobs at those same
- 25:33companies where they've got And that's amazing to me because looking back one hundred years
- 25:37ago when I was in college, thinking that, Okay, I'm working at
- 25:40a place you're paying me to get educated, and not out of ten of
- 25:45those students have a job waiting on them at the place that they've been working.
- 25:49Yeah, that's pretty cool. It's really how we should be doing things.
- 25:52It's just it takes that real collaboration between employers who have stepped up to
- 25:57say we don't want to poach town from each other anymore, we want to
- 26:00work collaboratively, and they've all agreed Bridge Valley is the place to send people
- 26:04for the training that they need to get the job skills that exist in the
- 26:08community. And then the Putnam County Development Authority acts sort of as an intermediary
- 26:14where they're out talking to other businesses to recruit them to be part of the
- 26:17group and talking to kids in schools to say, hey, you really should
- 26:21make sure you're signed up for this training at Bridge Valley so you can get
- 26:22these jobs. It's great for all of us. And you mentioned Toyota.
- 26:27I don't think sometimes people realize what a good community partner. Somebody who lives
- 26:32in Putnam County. I know what a good community partner that Toyota has been
- 26:37ever since they've been here, and not only just for Putnam County, but
- 26:38the entire state of West Virginia. They do it right, they really do.
- 26:42They've been wonderful. We've always had an executive sit on Bridge Valley's board
- 26:47for the last ten years, as long as we've been to college. We
- 26:49run all of our manufacturing programs out of Toyota Hall out at the Tech Park.
- 26:53They just gave us another scholarship for a group of students. We do
- 26:59a summer stem camp, so we bring in middle schoolers and high schoolers to
- 27:03help teach them about science, technology, engineering, and math. It's a
- 27:07summer program that we like to do in Toyota. Help sponsor it. They've
- 27:10been a sponsor for the last ten years, so really, you're right,
- 27:14they're wonderful community partners. Talk about some of the other training programs that are
- 27:18available out of Bridge Valleys as the face of education, as we talk about
- 27:22all the time when you're on the show, the face of education has changed
- 27:26in higher education. Talk about some of the things that are offered out at
- 27:29Bridge Value people possibly may not be aware of. So one program that we
- 27:33have that gosh, hospitals are screaming for more people out of this program.
- 27:37It's called Medical Laboratory Technology or MLT, and the job is people who you
- 27:42know, once you've had your blood drawn at a hospital, someone has to
- 27:45look at your blood. They have to decide are you sick, do you
- 27:48have COVID or do you have the flu? And whoever is looking at those
- 27:52cells their medical lab techs. So we have a program that trains people to
- 27:56be medical lab techs. It's a great paying job. All of our students
- 28:02are getting employed, but it's one of those jobs that people don't automatically know
- 28:06about. So we've been recruiting in science classes, we've been recruiting from high
- 28:11schools. We're really trying hard to figure out how do we get more people
- 28:14to know about MLT because there's such a demand in the community and it's such
- 28:18a great program. So that's a good example. Another example of something we
- 28:21have that's just highly in demand is the CDL program. You have to have
- 28:26a CDL even just to be aligned with rcial Driver's license h marcial Driver's License.
- 28:30So one of the projects that we're doing right now that we're pretty excited
- 28:33about is we just started working with an engineer to tear down a couple of
- 28:37old buildings in Montgomery that nobody's been using, and we're going to pave the
- 28:41site and we'll have a big flat area finally in Montgomery where we can do
- 28:45some really formal CDL training, okay, like on the job, I mean,
- 28:48you know, actually steering wheel and hand kind of trying will in hand.
- 28:51We put in some really state of the art simulators too, so we
- 28:55can teach you how to double clutch without getting you in the real truck first,
- 28:57and once you know what the skill looks like, then we can put
- 29:00you in the real truck. It's amazing right now. I've said this before
- 29:04that if you have a CDL license in this country right now, you have
- 29:10so many opportunities. And people say, well, I don't want to drive
- 29:11a truck, Well, there's a whole lot more to it than just the
- 29:14truck driving and driving you hauling goods. There's so many If you've got a
- 29:18CDL lies, you've got a ticket pretty much to do a whole variety of
- 29:22things, doctor Sacks. We have two million CDL truck drivers in the country.
- 29:26That's more than there are people in West Virginia. It's a huge We
- 29:30need more, ga we do, and we really need more. And locally,
- 29:33one of the things that I hear from lots of local employers is CDL
- 29:36long haul is a great job, and if that works for you, that's
- 29:38terrific. But lots of folks want to stay in town and want to be
- 29:41home when their kids are home at night. Yeah, and the city can't
- 29:45find people to drive trucks. The school districts can't find people to drive school
- 29:48buses. And those are all folks who have to have a CDL. Indeed,
- 29:52where can people learn more about any of the activities that we talked about
- 29:55to give us the website and whatnot. Bridge Valley dot edu. Right,
- 29:59Doctor Sacks, is always a p pleasure to have you on the show,
- 30:02and I can tell one of the great things I like about having you on
- 30:03the show is that you truly believe in the mission of Bridge Valley. I
- 30:08mean you tell by looking at you and listening to you, you're really excited
- 30:11about the work that you folks are doing out there, and that's great to
- 30:14hear. It's a wonderful college. The people there are terrific. They've been
- 30:17there a long time and I'm thrilled to get to be part of the community.

- 33:38elections director for the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office, going to join us
- 33:43to talk about that a little bit later on. Want to welcome to the
- 33:45show now though Tristan Levitt, he's a candidate for House in District fifty three.
- 33:49Is that right? That's right? All right, welcome to the show.
- 33:51Good morning, Thank you, Thank you so much for having me.
- 33:52Thank you for being here. Now you've been on the show before. But
- 33:54tell us a little bit about Tristan Levit. Give us the bio on yourself,
- 33:58sir, Yeah, absolutely so. Up in rural Idaho, the oldest
- 34:00of seven children. My dad's a small business owner, did drywall. My
- 34:04mom stayed home to raise us. I grew up with him. He needed
- 34:07help, so I grew up doing in the summer's doing drywall. So I
- 34:09learned the value of hard work at an early age hanging she rock and money
- 34:14was always tight, so I also learned the value of watching every dollar making
- 34:15account. I met the love of my life, Brittany Atkinson, in college,
- 34:20and so I first came to Charleston in two thousand and five. She's
- 34:22a lifelong resident. She was born and raised in Knaw County, and so
- 34:27I knew when I married her, I was married into West Virginia for life,
- 34:30and so we Our oldest son was born here at Women's and Children's in
- 34:32two thousand and seven. I worked here at Steptoe and Johnson twenty ten as
- 34:36a lawyer, and I thought we would stay here, but I had a
- 34:37very unique opportunity to go work for Senator Chuck Grassley on the Senate ju Shurry
- 34:42Committee in Congress and as a lawyer investigating waste fraud abuse in the federal government.
- 34:46And my first investigation was into Operation Fast and Furious, and so for
- 34:50the next really ten years after that, my career was just working with whistleblowers
- 34:52to find and fix problems in government. So we have five kids. We
- 34:55moved back here to raise those five children they wrenched from a junior we were
- 35:00at Capitol High School down to a kindergartner at Refere Elementary who was just honored
- 35:02this morning. We were just there for her leadership with some of her peers
- 35:07and there. Our kids are just involved in all sorts of things. So
- 35:08you'll find us at school sporting events and you know, performing arts activities in
- 35:14Canas City soccer games and Applechian Children's Chorus in River City, East Bala.
- 35:19So we just love this community, are really proud to be a part of
- 35:21it. If you don't mind asking, how did you end up in West
- 35:22Virginia? So I had the opportunity to work remotely after working with whistleblowers for
- 35:27so long, I had the opportunity to work remotely when I was nominated to
- 35:30position and confirmed by the United States Senate, and it was to be as
- 35:32a judge to hear appeals from federal employees who had either gotten in trouble for
- 35:37doing bad things that we wanted to get out the door, or those that
- 35:39were whistleblowers being retaliated against. So as soon as we had that opportunity to
- 35:43work remotely, we moved back here, which again, we talked about for
- 35:45years and it's been the biggest blessing for us. Now, you know,
- 35:49you're a multi faceted guy, and you've kind of gotten into that a little
- 35:52bit. But with all of those things that you've done and all this experience,
- 35:54why do you want to serve in the house. So this is really
- 35:58a unique opportunity for West Virginia right now. A lot of West Virginians,
- 36:02including those in eastern Kannak County where we live, are really hurting. And
- 36:07in part that's because of national things like Bidenomics and killer inflation that are really
- 36:10hurting people in the pocketbook. But a lot of it's really unique to our
- 36:14area. Right so for many years, jobs have been leaving, people have
- 36:16been moving out. Of course, the flooding, really severe flooding last two
- 36:21summers really you know, devastated a lot of folks. And so people need
- 36:25a government that works for them. And my background is in finding and fixing
- 36:30problems in government, and so I really want to help to champion in West
- 36:32Virginia. And I believe that, you know, we can make this state
- 36:36a place where my kids can stay to raise their families. And as a
- 36:38West Virginia by choice. I believe I'm you know, uniquely qualified also to
- 36:43help champion policies in the state House that will attract more people here to live,
- 36:46work and raise a family. What are some of the policies that you'd
- 36:50like to work on to try to champion, as you said, so some
- 36:52of them that are really close to our heart. You know, this is
- 36:53Education Freedom Week, and one of the things that we really had followed closely
- 36:58before we moved here was the education the school choice provisions. So the Hope
- 37:01Scholarship is something that we're beneficiary of. Our daughter has multiple learning disabilities,
- 37:06and four of our kids are in public school, but she's at Trust Montestory,
- 37:07So expanding the Hope Scholarship is something that's very very important to us.
- 37:10Additionally, even though there have been all these amazing economic development announcements over the
- 37:15last couple of years, I've talked to a lot of companies and people still
- 37:20look at our public school numbers and say, is this the place where I
- 37:22want to come? And so I'm very passionate about improving our public schools.
- 37:25Not everybody's going to have, even with the Hope Scholarship, the opportunity or
- 37:29the ability to go to a private school. Obviously, homeschooling and micro schooling
- 37:32are possible with hope, but so lots of policies like that. I think
- 37:35the tax cuts are things that will draw people here to our state and so
- 37:39identifying, you know, pro growth policies that not just bring in the businesses
- 37:45but bring in the families and individuals to work. Those those are all things
- 37:49that any smart legislator should be very focused on. Bea And we're talking with
- 37:52Tristan Levit, who's a candidate for our house in District fifty three. Phone
- 37:54calls to the show service of Big Lee, Pigley Whiggly and our Texi service
- 37:58provided by Fruit Pharmacy or Hometown Family Pharmacy for seventy one years. It's been
- 38:04a lively session so far. Tristan, anything in particular that you've been kind
- 38:09of keeping an eye on or anything you'd like to comment on so far.
- 38:13I've been following almost everything I've been I've spent as much time as I could
- 38:15down at the State House just to follow and learn as much as I could.
- 38:19One thing that I'm really excited about actually comes from last year. I'm
- 38:23on the board of the West Virginia Faith and Freedom Coalition, and so my
- 38:28fellow board member Andrew Garrett, and I were at one of the two crisis
- 38:30pregnancy centers here in Charleston last fall, and we had a really great conversation
- 38:36there about the importance of caring for young mothers not just through conception and birth,
- 38:40but with the challenges they faced there, especially those were single mothers.
- 38:44And so Faith and Freedom has helped to get a bill introduced that would remove
- 38:47the sales tax for baby formula, for bottles, for diapers, for car
- 38:52seats, and so we're really excited about that. Obviously, there's a lot
- 38:55of other a lot of other issues that are going on, and so finding
- 38:59things that will not just again attract people here, but protect families, protect
- 39:02children. A lot of that has been discussed. Finding the right way to
- 39:06do it is can be complex, but you know, there's exciting things happening,
- 39:09and there's some there's some you know, there's a lot of proposals that
- 39:14will have an impact on people one way or the other, for better or
- 39:15for worse. I didn't mention at the top of the show, but I
- 39:17guess people can kind of tell by listening to you that you are a Republican.
- 39:22I am a Republican. I'm a conservative Republican. Sometimes with some of
- 39:23my guess I don't feel like I need to do that. They just listen
- 39:27to you talking. You can say that you are a conservative Republican. I
- 39:30am. I am absolutely yeah. So I'm actually a member of the kannak
- 39:31Anty Republican Executive Committee. Right, right, So you're you weren't around in
- 39:37West Virginia when West Virginia was controlled by Democratic you know, by the Democratic
- 39:42Party for eighty eighty years. Well, again, I worked here at Stepto
- 39:45during the time when that was. Okay, okay, but okay, yeah,
- 39:46that's right, you are. You're my fault. But for the most
- 39:50part, neither one of us were around for that eighty and before you say,
- 39:52no, I wasn't around all eighty years, So don't don't even go
- 39:54there. But my point in saying that is there's been a drastic change.
- 40:00Obviously, that's the understatement of the year in West Virginia since you know,
- 40:05late twenty eight, nine, ten, twenty fourteen, the end of the
- 40:08two thousands. I'll just say that some have said it's not changed for the
- 40:14better. I would argue that if you look at all of these economy and
- 40:19I know it's not, as you said, Tristan, not just about the
- 40:21economy. But if you look at all these economic announcements that have been coming,
- 40:23starting well before the current administration and going back then, that something is
- 40:29going. Something must be going right to again to have these businesses want to
- 40:34come to West Virginia. That's the point I keep trying to drive home.
- 40:37Yes, the economy may be growing in some areas, but there's a reason
- 40:42why they're choosing West Virginia. So what do you hope to do to further
- 40:45that people would want to choose West Virginia over any other state? So I
- 40:52tend to think of this issue in two areas. This is the lawyer in
- 40:54beginning getting in my way. But I think a lot of the low hanging
- 40:58fruit for Republicans in twenty five fifteen, like changing right to work laws,
- 41:01to reform you know, on the judicial hell whole list for a lot of
- 41:05years, including what I was at a law firm here. So I think
- 41:07policies like that are why states are newly considering West Virginia. Things have changed
- 41:10in that way. That said, what's left, And of course the tax
- 41:15cuts were a huge, huge accomplishment, and I hope we get down to
- 41:17zero percent on the income tax. But though again that's kind of the that
- 41:22was the low hanging fruit for Republicans, what's left, it seems to me,
- 41:25are a lot of really complex issues. So again, if we don't
- 41:28fix our public education, people may not come, and if they come,
- 41:30they may not stay. The challenges with thorny issues that I haven't had the
- 41:35chance to write my sleeve yet, but PIA and keeping EMT workers and teacher
- 41:39pay, all of those things. So there are just some structural things,
- 41:43and it's exacerbated by you know, lingering effects from the COVID pandemic that again
- 41:46hurts small businesses. So as a small business owner in our home again,
- 41:51my wife owns Nelly's Cookie Jar. I can't remember if I mentioned that earlier
- 41:53and not, but we're small business and so she's a capital market all the
- 41:59time. But so, you know, policies that benefit small businesses. I
- 42:04understand the need to compete with other states with these huge, you know,
- 42:07these huge packages to try and attract big corporations, but focusing on small businesses
- 42:10here too, I think can really help, not just to benefit those that
- 42:14already live here, but again attract more people to come. Give me thirty
- 42:17seconds on why people should vote for Tristan Levitt for a House because I show
- 42:22up and I do the work. And if you look on my social media
- 42:25or talk to anyone who's in Kannak candidate's involved in politics, you will see
- 42:29that that's the case. And so I absolutely want to as a conservative Republican
- 42:32challenge or champion policies that will benefit West Virginia. And because of my background
- 42:37in finding and fixing problems in government, I believe I can help government make
- 42:40better for you, work better for you. I wish you the best to
- 42:44luck out on the campaign trail. Tristan Levitt, Republican candidate for House in

- 45:42for office for the May fourteenth primary election. Britney Westfall is the director of
- 45:45Elections for the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office, and she joins us.
- 45:49Now, Brittany, good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning,
- 45:52thank you, thank you for being here, fun times all the way up
- 45:55till midnight tomorrow night in the secretary of State's office. Right, that is
- 46:00correct. So I was looking at the numbers, and so far nearly five
- 46:05hundred people overall have filed to run for offices around the state, is that
- 46:08right? That's correct, Well, all around the state if you count the
- 46:13county offices, we're now over statewide seventeen hundred candidates. And there are as
- 46:20you said, there are many, not only statewide, but also you've got
- 46:22the local races as well. What does it actually take to file to run
- 46:28for office in West Virginia? Britney. So, to run for office in
- 46:31the primary election, you will need to file your certificate announcement candidate filing SEA
- 46:37and have that notarized or come here to have it notarized at the Secretary of
- 46:44State's office. So that is if you want to run for a state office
- 46:46or a multi county office. If you want to run for a county office,
- 46:51then you'll do that filing with your county clerk, so you'll need your
- 46:54certificate announcement. You'll need to make sure that is notarized and to have your
- 46:59file. Now our state capital, we are going to be open here until
- 47:05midnight tomorrow night, so from nine to midnight. For county offices, they
- 47:10will be open from nine to noon, but you should definitely contact your county
- 47:15clerk's office just to make sure. Yeah, because all of the all the
- 47:19courthouses, as you said, the county clerk's office, whatnot, they may
- 47:21be different. But at the Capitol, you folks are going to be there
- 47:23till midnight tomorrow night. And it's always interesting, even well before I started
- 47:29doing the show, Brittany, and before I spent my time working in the
- 47:30Secretary of State's office, it's always interesting how people will watch that website and
- 47:36watch to see who comes in because there are those, as you know,
- 47:38with the flair for the dramatic, and there's nothing wrong with that that like
- 47:42to come in at eleven fifty five, or they like to bring the entire
- 47:45family with them, or you know, the entourage with them and film it
- 47:49and so on and so forth. So there's a little bit of drama involved
- 47:52here, right well, I hope there's no drama. But yes, you're
- 47:58not on your end the drama on there, I mean, you know,
- 48:00definitely not on your end. Yeah. And you mentioned that they that they
- 48:05can file at the at their county clerk's office and so on and so forth
- 48:07and so forth, or come into the Secretary of State's office. And you
- 48:10folks have done a great job of keeping track of all the filings on the
- 48:14website as well. Well, thank you. Yes, we like to have
- 48:17those up. The public is looking forward to seeing those. Any any advice
- 48:22that you want to give to those that are on the on the on the
- 48:25fence right now as to whether they should decide to run for office tomorrow or
- 48:29not, Any any advice you want to give them. Yes, I want
- 48:32to be sure that if you are getting your filing in the mail, you
- 48:37want to make sure that is post office postmarked at the United States Post Office
- 48:40by tomorrow, by the twenty seventh. If you're coming in person, you
- 48:45know the hours now, so come see us. If you are mailing your
- 48:51form, you want to contact us just to make sure you're filling everything out
- 48:53right, because if that comes after the twenty seventh and there's mistakes, then
- 49:00we will not be able to accept that. So let's be very careful as
- 49:02we're following at the last minute to make sure you have all your information and
- 49:07requirements for running. All right, Brittany, I know you folks are busy
- 49:10in the offices as you head up into twelve o one am Sunday morning.
- 49:15I'll let you get back to it. Britney west Fall, I appreciate you
- 49:16being here. Thanks a lot, thank you, I had Britney Westfall again
- 49:22the director of Elections for the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office. Let me
- 49:28knock out a couple of texts here before we end it all for the week.
- 49:30Texas Dave Big thanks to Delegates Horset, Hornsby, thorn heckerd Height and
- 49:34Dean for introducing House Bill five thousand and eight to bring a true three hundred
- 49:37and sixty five day fishing license program to West Virginia, good for one year
- 49:43from dat to purchase. Hopefully it passes and we bring West Virginia fishing into
- 49:45the twenty first century, says ask Tristan. Why it is three point two
- 49:52percent GDP growth that last quarter under Biden is good federal money and the centers
- 49:57are the reasons for job growth. Stop lying to yourself and everyone else.
- 50:01Well again, why are they choosing West Virginia to come here though? Tex
- 50:06says, Dave don't need more women haters in the legislature. Social issues and
- 50:09the people needs to stop. According to a text, we're going to be
- 50:15keeping a close eye on the Republican Party's winner. Meeting tomorrow in Charleston,
- 50:19the Republican Executive Committee will meet to vote on a proposed resolution to close the
- 50:23Republican primary. This made anyone other than registered Republicans. So, in other
- 50:29words, if you are a registered independent, if this passes tomorrow what's being
- 50:35proposed, you would not be allowed to request a Republican ballot, as many
- 50:38independents frequently do. Again, if you're registered, it's nonpartisan. You are
- 50:43independent. You go to your polling place and you say, I am Dave.
- 50:45I would like to have a Republican or Democrat ballot. If some Republicans
- 50:51get their way, then you'd have to be a registered Republican, And if
- 50:53you're not, you would only be able to vote for the nonpartisan races.
- 50:57Your judge's magisters, whatever that's could be taken up at the Republican Party's winner
- 51:00meeting tomorrow and Charleston up scheduled for last week, but because of the weather
- 51:04it is postponed to this week. I'm not sure which way it's gonna go.
- 51:07Hoppy actually has a poll going on on X the artist wim me known
- 51:12to Twitter right now, so you could weigh in on what you think about
- 51:14that. I will say this editorial comment, I don't think it's a smart
- 51:17move on behalf of Republicans. I just I really don't. There are a
- 51:23lot of people that are registered independent, and these studies have shown they tend
- 51:27to vote Republican, and I think you run the risk, in my opinion,
- 51:31of peeing off a whole lot of independence. If this passes, we'll
- 51:37see what happens. It'll happen tomorrow. Also, Republican Party may be choosing
- 51:39a new chair tomorrow. Lja mccardo is going to be stepping down to perhaps
- 51:44run for a judicial position. All right, got to go. Thank you
- 51:45to all my guests today. Coming up on Monday show, chero Ellis from
