- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome back everyone.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: So when you watch this, it's gonna be Ramadan.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I'm very excited for Ramadan this year.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: And Ramadan Mubarak to everybody.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Ramadan Mubarak Ram Ramadan Karim to you, your families, your loved ones, to everybody in the world celebrating to the whole universe, right?
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Ramadan Karim.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I love this month.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I especially love it this year because Aftar is at like six o'clock.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: For the first nine days.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: For the first nine days.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: It's a five year old.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And then we're it's fine.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And then we like spring forward, but it's fine as at seven.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: I will never forget when Aftar was at like 845.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: 850.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: 850.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, like, for me, it's like I'm kind of like a little bit worried because I'm like, am I gonna have enough time to come home from work?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: You know, it's so funny that you say that because I was thinking the same thing.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, that like one year when it was really late, I had time to come home and chill after work and get up and make something, kind of, and then like start preparing food.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: It's okay, you know what though?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Weirdly, subhanAllah, every single Ramadan, I'm like, I don't know how we're gonna get through it.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And then like and then like we make like God comes through, right?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, you make it, and every day seems just a little bit easier.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I wanted to talk a little bit this episode.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: This this episode, we're we have a bunch of things we want to discuss.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: But first, first thing I want to discuss is like, um, as we are all watching this, and um, I want us to, you know, really um, I don't know, like kind of like solidify like our hope and faith in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala this Ramadan.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of like terrible stuff happening.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm personally gonna use this time this month to try to do as much good as I can um and as much like worship like Ibadah that I can because I feel like that is the one thing that I need to do.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So what what what kind of Ibadah?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Like what kind of worship?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So like every year on your list, like what's what are your every year and every year I say, Oh my gosh, I'm gonna make it to like all the tarawih and I don't.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So this year I'm really gonna do that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I'm really going to set a goal for myself that I'm gonna make it to tarawih.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And I have a friend that like reached out to me uh the other day and she's like, Are we gonna do this together?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Yep, we I we are gonna do this together.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So every together.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna be able to go to the masjid every day, but I'm gonna my at least pray the tarawih.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my goal is to just pray tarawih.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Like that is my my goal this year.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna go to I'm not, like I said, I'm not gonna be able to go to the mosque, but I do want to do um like you know, the weekends where I can to go and do it like Jama, like at the mosque, like together.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So I want to do that.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and I also want to try and use this Ramadan to be as like energized.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I know that's the wrong word to use when you're not caffeinated for me, but I just don't want people to keep thinking, like, oh my gosh, Hanan sex without caffeine, which is like a thing.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: It's like a thing this year.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, have you prepared?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Because some people prepare themselves before.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: No, I haven't prepared myself.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: So you haven't weaned yourself off the c the caffeine?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I never do, and honestly, the first day, alhamdulillah, it's on a Saturday, so I'm home.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: The first two days I'm home.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: After that, I'm fine.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: The first day is the only day that I'm like really tired and I get a headache and stuff.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: I don't bother with weaning myself off either.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, I'm just gonna have caffeine.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: And as soon as I if like have uh like iftar, I'll eat, and then on my coffee's yeah, it's dipping.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just I can't, but like for anything else in terms of spiritual goals.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: That's my my main thing is to just make sure that I do all that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, because for me, you know, like it's always uh reading the Quran.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because like my Arabi is is is it's a struggle for me.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: But Lena does it every day.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: But I do it, and I what I do is I use like um I the last couple of years I've been like reading along with uh Mufti Menk, Shaykh Mufti Menk.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: And because he goes, he doesn't go too slow.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Like you can't have the extra tajweed.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: No, like if you want to finish, if you want to finish, because like I love she doesn't mean that.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, I love, I love like just to listen, yeah.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: But when you're not on a on a deadline to finish, like you don't want to do like one part each day.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: So like you need someone who's gonna go quickly.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like you know 100%.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: I know I understand what you're saying.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Because like like Abdul Basid, I'm gonna like like I listen to him when I don't have to, it's not like a homework assignment.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, but no that's but you do, but I love that that you treat this like a homework assignment.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, like that.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: You need to get through with it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Every day, like I have to read like one juza or one part of the Quran, and then like so that's that's been my thing for the past, I think, three or four years now.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I try to do that, and then this year I'm gonna try.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I always say I'm gonna do this, but I'm gonna try to make the kids sit and we have like a halakha thing.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know how successful I'm gonna be.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I love that though.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: But they promise, they promise to participate.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: You guys have to remember we have teenagers, yes, yes, and they're like, Yeah, sure.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: And I'm just like, I know them.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: They're gonna be like, no, we're tired right now.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So it's like after ifthot, obviously.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then maybe, maybe after iftar go for a walk.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, I think I I love those goals.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Because the weather is I love those goals.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: But I do love the the walk after iftod.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I'm gonna try to do that, and then also look, look, at least if I can get them to do like two or three like lessons.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: You know who's really good about walking after iftod is your husband.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, he goes biking too.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I love that because it's like that's how he's he's very serious about it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But honestly, like, remember what I said about like being energized?
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's probably why he's energized.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, how are we married?
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Because like he takes that stuff seriously.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, I don't wanna like I don't wanna mess up my hair out of God's side.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I just wash my hair.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: No, but I love that.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I love that he has like these goals.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: No, no, he definitely.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, look, I have friends that like during Ramadan, they like really settle into this phenomenal routine, and I like wish that was me, but it's not me.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: No, I don't have a routine, I can't.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Like, my my routine is like crazy.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: It's like we're like, give me your hand.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: We're like two people out and all of course we're like, yes, yes, Ramadan.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: No, because I don't have my life together without Ramadan.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: And then with Ramadan and the late hours and all the stuff you have to do and the preparation.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: No, for sure.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: It's like if I'm making it, yeah, it's like by the skin of my teeth.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Um, I had one more thing to say, and I'm just completely.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: No, it's okay.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so like I wanted to um uh also say like this month, like about hope.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Like alhamdulillah, we have we're able to like set goals and and you know, do these things and and be excited.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and on the in the spirit of like hope and giving and having faith and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and community and all of that, um, I am going to link two um uh meal trains, donation pages for two local families in our area that could really use the help and the support and the positivity that's Ramadan.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: So we need to post it as a story, too.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I will.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I will definitely, yeah, I'll definitely post it as a story.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, honestly, they are they're they're both they're two families, they're both dealing with like very serious cancer diagnosis diagnoses.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: What is the plural for diagnosis?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Don't ask me.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's um and and honestly, like it really made me pause and think um like how blessed I am.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And like just say like alhamdulillah, that I can, you, me, our families, like we really can stop and and think about you know the things, the goals that we want to have for Ramadan when someone else's goal, like right next to me, is like is just to like make it to survive.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know?
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So uh no, it's a blessing in each Ramadan that you know, like we'll joke about Ramadan, oh my god, Ramadan, but like honestly, it's also it's always a blessing that you make it and you know that Ramadan.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: You know what's funny that you say that?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: So on Tuesday I was out with some of my friends, shout out to Nihil, because she's the one who told us this, and she said that she had watched um uh a video by a it's like an Egyptian Daya, his name is Mustafa Husni.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: I don't even want to use the word dayah, he's just like a preacher.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So kind of.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: But isn't that what dayah means preacher?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, anyways, but I I like Mustafa Husni a lot.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: But basically, he was talking about how we're always like, oh my god, I can't believe it's Ramadan.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And he's like, you need to flip your switch.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Flip the switch.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, flip your your the way that you think about this and basically realize that fasting is a blessing and that you are blessed every year that you are able to participate and commit yourself to this in this way to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, because some people are not able to accept this gift that they are able to fast.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, oh my god, you know, when she told me that on Tuesday, I was like, that's actually really like a beautiful way to think about it.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: No, it's definitely I always that's how I am like Alhamdulillah, I'm here.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I made it to another Ramadan.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I'm still I'm still alive, okay?
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So, like, yeah, like shout out, shout out to Nihil because we were complaining about that.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: She's like, guys, guys, guys, I heard this.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So and you know, I also was reading uh some stuff yesterday, and I didn't realize this that um the reward for fasting, like we don't know what it is.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Only God knows that.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: So you're just doing it for God.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: So like it's I know.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I'm excited.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I'm excited.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Um uh for me, like this is just kind of going back to that episode we have about family drama.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's Ramadan.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And I just want to say take this opportunity to use this month to reconcile if you're not talking to someone.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Try at least, you know, like you're going in there, you're fasting.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I gotta, right?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I gotta, I saw something yesterday, and I gotta I gotta tell you about it because it's like right along the lines of like what you just mentioned.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And it said something so beautiful, and I am gonna pull it up for you and uh Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is the time.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: This is the time, you know.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: If Allah forgives our sins, maybe you should also forget Don't forget, you don't have to forget, but at least forgive.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Um, so it said Ahdah and namhul ghalt.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So like I like the the basically the principle of us erasing a mistake for the sake of you know, the the affection or bond or love between us, um, not uh erasing the love and affection and bond between us because a mistake was made.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: So I I saw that yesterday and I was like, I freaking love that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think this is the this is the month, this is the time to do it.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: You know, life is uh is like we said before, it's too short.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Take this as an opportunity.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: You know, this is the perfect time because it just doesn't make sense for me.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm not trying to, you know, go back and rehash that topic again, but I'm just it just doesn't make sense to me that you're gonna fast the whole month, you're gonna pray, you're gonna do tara week, you're gonna do all these extra, you know, stuff, and then in the end, you're still not gonna be talking to people.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, look, at the end of the day, you can't make anybody do something they don't want to do.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: All I say is like, you know, Rabbinna ihadi gamia.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Like I really hope that like Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala just like the month.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: This is the month to do it, you know?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Try to just open, like, you know, turn a new page.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: So I want to talk about something else Ramadan related to shift a little bit.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited this year in about every year.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: You know what's you know what I've discovered that like as I've gotten older and as the years have progressed in Ramadan, that I like have a whole Ramadan attire.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I uh freaking love getting dressed up for Ramadan, like to uh go to a gathering, to a zuma, to even even just to like go pray.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I like love the the long abayas and the kaftans, and there's a whole like Ramadan, like yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: You should post some, but uh for me, um I don't know, like I I'm still like you know when when we had the pandemic at Ramadan.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: I know you love Ramadan.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: I haven't recovered.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Like I'm still sucking.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Lena loved that Ramadan.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: That was her favorite.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Like Ramadan has never been the same for me again because like I realized I don't have to go to these events, but then again, I know that's part of Ramadan to like to see people.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Of course, but at the end I'm like, uh, like there was this thing we got invited to.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: It's like a community thing, you know.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: And and I told the kids, and like my husband, you know I'm Jin.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: He does not want to go in Ramadan.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: He's like, you can invite whoever you want, but don't ask me to go anywhere.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: He's my dad.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like, I'm fasting all day.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: I don't, he's like, I don't want to deal with going to somebody's house and they don't have good food and I'm fasting all day, and I'm gonna be really upset.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: It's it's kind of it's kind of like whatever.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: But anyways, I was telling the kids, I'm like, hey guys, we got invited to this thing, and they looked at me, they're like, I don't, I don't know, like it's the second day of Ramadan.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: They're like, not really.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: I don't just like you guys are so like I'm trying to encourage them so they can encourage me and like nothing, nobody's nobody's going anywhere.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Nobody's nobody's interested, they're just like nope kind of sound.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Honestly, though, I can't blame them because they're also fasting.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And I I always say, like, I think we forget, like, sometimes we drag our kids places, but like they're people, they're also fasting.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: I told them if you guys don't want to go, fine.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: But I'm just trying to get them out of that because we've we've gotten into this habit ever since the pandemic, we just focus on you know, Ramadan, prayer, you know, doing our own thing at home.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: But then I'm like, okay, but we have to slowly start getting it.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: But I also think there's nothing really wrong with that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: No, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: But that's that's what that's what the Ramadan the Ramadan and the pandemic taught me.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know what?
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: No, this is fine.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: This is okay, you know.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Um, but like once or twice during this.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: But I think it depends on too.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Like it really will depend for them on what it is that you want to do.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what I mean.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Like maybe, maybe they don't want to do a community thing, but maybe they wouldn't mind like to doing it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: My daughter is very picky.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: She's like, no.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: She's like, I don't know who's cooking, who's bringing the food.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: She's like, no.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And I get it because she's extremely she's extremely picky, and she's not gonna.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's not like and I get it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: When they're fasting, I'm sorry.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Like they're still kids.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: I know they're teenagers, but like, but at the end of the day, I feel like if it was any other time, I'd be like, you know what, just figure out the food thing.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: But when you're fasting, like, I don't want to figure out the food thing.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't want to figure it out.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Like, I just want to eat something I want.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And and honestly, regardless of when you break your fast, like what time it is, you kind of just are tired afterwards.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: You kind of want to chill and do nothing for a little bit.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: But then yeah, and if you have like when you get your energy, really, it should be for the things they want to do, like Quran and Tarawi.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: But that's the thing.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Like, I I mean Tarawi ha like maybe I should consider it.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Like, I should consider going once or twice.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You know, we should take the kids and go on a weekend.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Like a Friday night or a Saturday night.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Because there's a bunch of people.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Because last week last year they went with uh with um some family friends.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I mean, why not?
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: They went a couple nights.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's fun.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's fun for the kids.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's cool.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: But like I also want to talk about one more thing about that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so the people who are preparing food, whether it's the the husband, the wife, because you know, some some guys are the ones preparing the food.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: So just be kind to them.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I know for the person that's uh seriously.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the person preparing your food, and also we have to get out of this, and like I don't have this issue, alhamdulillah, like my husband's very helpful, yeah, you know, but like I've I I have friends, I I have family members who are like notorious for doing this.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Like the woman or the person, I don't want to say the woman, the person who's preparing the food is stuck all day doing that, and that's not what Ramadan is about.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know if it's really like stuck all day.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Dude, like it's they don't like okay, they're in the kitchen all day, and they're when you're cooking for big families, like it needs to be an effort.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: You guys have to help each other, it needs to be a group project.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's not because that person, it's their Ramadan too.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: They should be able to have spiritual goals as well and not just be stuck in the in the they have cooking goals.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, do you know what I mean?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Like helping.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I know you have to go.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: And like, and like afterwards, do the damn dishes.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: If the person is the one preparing the food, don't let them do the dishes too.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: This is a public service announcement.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Basically, what Lena's trying to say is Ramadan isn't just about what you're gonna eat.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: And then it's just like be helpful.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Like that's what Mishad Alkumna I mean all day, and they're like, oh, what's for like I would I would hurt someone.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I will say, like, during Ramadan on the on the weekends, especially, um, like we're either invited out or if we're gonna eat at home, every I'm here's my thing.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm just like, hey guys, what are you guys in the mood for?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And usually the response is like something really simple.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not really sure about this, but like whatever it is, like alhamdulillah, everybody's pretty helpful.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: But see, that's the thing.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Like for me, I was like, listen, tell me what you want the first day.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: And and and I'm like, something that you guys eat, because I all of you eat, because I don't also I don't want to make it like making a bunch of different things.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so my daughter's like, no makuba.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, she's I thought I thought you like it.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: And she's like, but look, I don't want it the first day.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So the consensus is showma.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's amazing.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I'm gonna like prepare all that it shouldn't be like you know, with fries and sides and like soup and all that stuff.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: That's perfect, actually.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, okay, everybody likes show.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I know where I'm going.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Your mom's house?
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Your house.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I don't say come over.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: No, the next time I make svijha, I'm gonna make a guys, yeah.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Lena Lena made me sviha and I didn't share it.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's but it wasn't a lie, didn't make a big batch because I always like when I make a big batch, like it stays in the fridge and I hate freezing it.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, like do you know?
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I I kind of agree with her because like when you reheat it, it's just not a big thing.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: It's not the same, it's not the same.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: And like even Ryo, she's like, is this fiha done?
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, I only made a small batch.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: She's like, ugh.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: She's like, I was looking forward to it.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Like, girl, I was in school.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is good.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, supply and demand.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, I'm I'm making a small amount, so you guys really want it.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: I love that supply and demand.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: No, I I'm I'm very, very excited for, you know, just like the next 30 days.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna do our best to get maybe like one or two episodes in.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're being very hopeful.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: We're thinking about what kind of content we want to do.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: There is some ideas that I presented to Lena, so but we're definitely not gonna be on our weekly schedule.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Because like, how am I gonna do this and meet my spiritual goals and meet my professional goals?
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that too.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, can I just call out?
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: We have people at work who just completely out for Ramadan.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I don't blame them.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: But they they do their their yearly PTO Can I tell you Ramadan?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Can I tell you that one of my coworkers yesterday said that to me?
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: He was like, why aren't you just like off for this month?
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Like you have the time to make it up.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: That's why.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think he's scared of me.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: I think like I'm gonna be completely honest with you guys.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: I become like because I'm there's so much going on, I like work is like not my focus.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: I wish it wasn't this bad.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: But there's like I can't help it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Like I just get so my my I can't concentrate.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I'm tired all the time.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: By week three is when I really meet my stride.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Usually for me, I have the first two weeks, I have all the energy.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm gonna do that.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And then I start like, yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: By week, by by like after the first two weeks pass, I feel like my body's gotten used to it.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I'm good.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I'm you know, I'm in a in a zone or whatever.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: I think sleep, sleep.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Sleep is the main issue.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Sleep is the main issue, honestly.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Or lack thereof.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Lack thereof.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the problem.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Is I feel like I never sleep enough.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Like I should just be a good person, go to sleep like at 11 o'clock or 10 30 and then wake up on time and I don't ever.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was I was telling Amjad, I was like, you know what, maybe they can just eat before they go to sleep.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Halas.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: And he's like, no, he's like, they have to go to get up and eat.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And I'm just like, if it was me, I would not sleeping through.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, I'm not interested.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: But honestly, like I even if we don't uh but here's the thing it's like you're gonna get up to pray anyway, just get up like 15 minutes early.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, I usually have yogurt, yeah, and like uh fruits.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, my uh yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: So my uh my husband, Mahmoud, is the one that's responsible for making this for making the sahud.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, good.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: That's his thing.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: He's pretty good about that stuff.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and my older son uh kind of gets up and does his own thing.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's hilarious because the little one, you know, for the longest time, we didn't wake him up for sahud because he wasn't old enough to fast.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: This year he's fasting, right?
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, okay.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he wasn't all the like the full day.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Insha'Allah, he's gonna do his best.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Okay, right.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Good, good.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: So the little one, the little one is 10, but uh, but you know, maybe like four or five years ago, he would uh he would wake up and be like, guys, I want to have eggs in the night too.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: That's kind of like our cat.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: She gets up, not comparing your kid to my cat, but like she gets up and so she's like, What is going on in the first two days?
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: He's like, Why is everybody awake?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: And then she's like, What's going on?
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: And then she gets used to it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, he would just be like, I want to have eggs in the night too.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: So that's why he calls sachur eggs in the night.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Eggs in the night.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, that's great.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: It's kind of cute.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, 10 he doesn't have to, but this year because it's yeah, shorter days a little bit.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Actually, you know, he did a really good job last year.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: He fasted full days on the weekends.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, good, good.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So he's prepared.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And he did half days during the school week.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Like he would have lunch at 12:30 and then fast all the way until iftar, or fast from like, you know, the morning until maybe like one.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: So which is like from fresh until one.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: So he's trying.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: I don't, I don't this would be the year, the very like formative year that he like needs to dig his heels in and do it.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he needs to lock in.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, honestly, after that, it's just really hard.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why I have so much respect.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: You mean like if you start lit much later, yeah, it's hard.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why I have so much respect for um uh reverts.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Like they are adults.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Like, I look at like my brother-in-law, yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: He I mean, it's hard for him.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: He he was like he he was like in his late 20s when he started.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Because yeah, if you don't start when you're really young, yeah, it's very because everyone that I know, like I have friends who started later in life, and they're just like it's hard.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: It's hard, but to be honest with you, like he's gangster, he does it, like he's he's he's all in and he does a good job.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: And I mean, you know, it's like it's it's kind of awesome to witness because this is something that we've been that we've been, you know, like living and dealing with our whole lives.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Take it for granted that it's easy.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: But yeah, if you if you start young, you shouldn't have an it shouldn't be a problem.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: But but this again, this just goes to show you that every year as Ramadan approaches, it makes you, you know, one, like for me at least, it makes me kind of reevaluate where I am in my um in my I would I don't want to say level of worship, but I'm gonna say level of worship.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Like way, I really makes me evaluate how I can improve my Abadah, right?
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Um, beyond just like praying, you know, the five prayers a day.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: No, there is more that I could be doing.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: It also makes me think of like, how can I do more for people in my community?
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: How can and then how can I do more for people just outside of my community?
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Um, but that's one of the things I love about Ramadan.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: We should be thinking like that all year long.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I like that there's at least a moment because I feel like we're all like giving back and and and charity for me during Ramadan, like I don't like to talk about it, but that that's one of the things that I I also like to do.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Like, even if it's just a small amount, like especially the last 10 days of Ramadan, I'm just loud, like, okay, like I gotta do it.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Let's get on it.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Let's get on it.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: But no, it just I love it.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I love, I love like that.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: It's and I'm telling you, like, there is whether you're somebody who's super social in Ramadan, whether you're not so social super social in Ramadan, I just feel like Ramadan has a different vibe vibe completely.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And I've you know, and it's and as we've like gone through, as we've gone through the years, you kinda it kind of makes me pause and think and be like, you know what?
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: I kind of actually like I had a moment in in in life where I was just like, I did really used to dread Ramadan.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Really, I really used to dread Ramadan.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: But I think like you mean but you're being honest.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, like when you're younger, it's like I didn't go through this, but you because you Don't understand the significance of the and the meaning behind it.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: It's not just younger.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: You have moments in life, even as an adult, where you're just like, this is so hard for me.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And like I like I want to fast and I want to worship and I want to do all of these things, but like I'm just having a hard time with it.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: And so I just feel like Alhamdulillah, like this year I'm in a place where I'm grateful.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's all about perspective.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm really grateful to be in this position and to be like able to fast and be able to celebrate.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: But like I said, it's you're here for another year.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: You made it another year.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: You made it for another year.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Honestly, though, Lena, it's not just that.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: It's just like between last year, between like everything that's happened in the world in the last like two years, I am grateful that we are here, that we're together.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: You, me, together, me, my family, me, my parents, my siblings, my nieces, my nephews, my extended family, my friends, like my tribe.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: So it's it's like I said, it's like a blessing.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Um, to on a whole kind of different topic.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Are you planning on watching any Ramadan shows?
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I'll get into it, but like, yeah, I this is like Ramad Ramadan is like we, you know, Musal Tele.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: In the Arab world, it's like huge.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: It is huge.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: It's huge.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: It is huge.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, like, I'll I'll find something and I'm like, okay, I love this and I want to watch it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Other times I'm like, eh.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: I don't really get into much of you know, much of what's what's going on, but I'm like, I don't know.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I I'm not gonna say, I'm not gonna like say I'm not gonna watch anything.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna avoid there.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Was that COVID year where Lena and I were just like obsessed?
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think they have the new season.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm not.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: I can't.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: I can't.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Dude, the last one was just like not the last time I've done Ramadan before.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, I can't do this.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I can't do it.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, it's stressful.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't want to watch and like Arab drama, dude.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Arab drama is like on a whole other level.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Last year I watched a few things, but like I like to watch things that make me laugh.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, like I'm I'm no, I bought a I bought this book on Islamic history.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like, maybe instead of like after, I'm like, I'm trying to be like really good.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, use your time.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Lena's prepared.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: No, because like I I love to read and like I'm I'm making an effort to like even with everything that we have to do, like work and like you know, with this podcast producing and editing.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, I have to find time.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: She said producing at I just show up.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: So when I tell you guys I show up, I'm not lying.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: No, but I have to like find like time because I love reading, you know.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: So like I I I'm like, no, I gotta spend some time.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Speaking of, speaking of, I just show up and producing and editing.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: So like we filmed this in my house, in case you guys were wondering.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Like, we're sitting at my dining room, and it's hilarious because now I have some coworkers who watch, and they're like, I know that background, yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I was like, my work calls from right here.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: So pretty much like I feel like we're like ready and like settled in and ready to get Ramadan going, right?
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Ready to go.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: But yeah, um, I I I do have like you know some of my questions that I love to ask you.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Are you prepared?
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: I'm just glad that someone else gets prepared.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's not like a quiz, it's a this or that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: So you're there's no wrong answer.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, technically there is.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: You know what's funny?
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Um, uh speaking of this or that and Lena always preparing herself.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: The last episode was about things that like Lena couldn't stand.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And I felt like the entire episode, I was just like this.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I I I people probably hate me right now with all the things.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I know, and it's just hilarious because you know it makes me think of that, like if that meme we listen or the whatever that trend we listen and we don't judge.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally, my face said, Lena, I'm listening and I'm judging you already.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: You're judging.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: And also just on a side note, the episode was filmed like a year ago, but we never aired it, so we dropped it in.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So if I look fatter, it's fine.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Now you know why.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, that is so self-deprecating.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: She's not fatter.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Anyways, ask your question.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I did gain some weight.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so we're gonna play this or that.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, before we wrap up the episode.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Iftad with soup first or straight to the main dish?
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Soup.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with the main dish.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: No, soup.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I like it, it warms my soul.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: I understand, but like the soup, it's just gonna fill my stomach.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: I'd rather eat soup and be good.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, no, I'm going to the main dish.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Um, lentil soup or harira?
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's a difficult choice.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Both?
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: No, you gotta pick one.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Harira.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I love lentil soup.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: I love both.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: Honestly, Harira's delicious, but I I don't know.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Now I want to eat Harira.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: I know, I'm sorry.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, next one.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: Uh knafa or katayev.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Well, is it kanafa al-Ishtah or a B al Bukasarot?
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's Palestinian knafa from Neblis, like with cheese.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Uh.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: For Ramadan?
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: For Ramadan.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: But okay, here's here's the follow-up.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: You're like, it's Palestinian knafa from Nebles.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: That's very specific.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Because I would pick katayev.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you why.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Because kata'ayf is the gift that keeps on giving.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Like you can eat it warm.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Anytime.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: You can eat it cold.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Knef is fine.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Like straight out of the fridge.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: If it's not warm, I lose my interest.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Here's a follow-up to that.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Cheese katayef or uh katayaf with nuts.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: So I definitely prefer cheese anything.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: No, I'm gonna go with the katayaf with nuts.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'll eat both, but I prefer cheese.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Not even cheese, I prefer ishtah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Ah, okay.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Okay, no.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we mostly agree.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, except for the cheese part.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: And except for the fact that I'm hungry now.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, at least we're not, you know.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: That is very true.
