- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Laura Dierda with Becker's
- 0:02Healthcare. Thank you so much for tuning in
- 0:04to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. Today, we're
- 0:06going to talk about network performance.
- 0:08Joining me for today's discussion are Bob Tavernier,
- 0:12who is a solution executive for Quest Analytics,
- 0:15and Karen Tashian, who is senior director of
- 0:18network regulatory operations at Health Care Service Corporation.
- 0:21Bob, Karen, thank you so much for being
- 0:23here today.
- 0:24Thank you, Lauren. Thank you very much, Lauren.
- 0:26To get us started, can you please introduce
- 0:28yourselves and tell us a little bit about
- 0:30your work in health care? And, Karen, we'll
- 0:31start with you. Thanks for having us, Laura.
- 0:34As you stated, I'm Karen Tashian. I work
- 0:36for health care service corporation, which is a
- 0:39Blue Cross Blue Shield franchisee.
- 0:42My job is to make sure that we
- 0:44stay compliant, and so most of my teams
- 0:47work on making sure our networks are adequate
- 0:49and that we're providing enough member access to
- 0:51care. So we manage all of the regulatory
- 0:54filings that are attributed to that. Bob, do
- 0:57you wanna go next?
- 0:58Thank you, Karen.
- 0:59Hi. My name is Bob Tavernier.
- 1:01I am a solutions executive here at Quest
- 1:04Analytics.
- 1:05My role is primarily focused on client engagement,
- 1:09focusing on on all solution verticals as it
- 1:12relates to network data management,
- 1:14network management,
- 1:16and network monitoring.
- 1:18Super happy to be here today. Thank you.
- 1:21Well, Bob, Quest Analytics recently partnered with Becker's
- 1:23to survey health plan leaders on network performance
- 1:26and related challenges.
- 1:28What were the most striking or validating findings
- 1:30from your perspective, and why are these insights
- 1:33timely and important for payer executives today?
- 1:36That's a great question, Lauren.
- 1:38Some of the primary
- 1:39focus areas when organizations think about what's most
- 1:42important to them,
- 1:44network performance is hot. It really is.
- 1:47When they think about the top three priorities,
- 1:49lowering administrative costs,
- 1:51improving clinical quality, focusing in on truly member
- 1:56satisfaction,
- 1:56we're those top three.
- 1:58They know that network performance is truly foundational
- 2:02when it comes to ultimately measuring
- 2:04performance of the network and ultimately helping them
- 2:07with their organizational
- 2:08priorities.
- 2:09What's interesting is
- 2:11they really focused on
- 2:13taking a look at deeper dive at competitive
- 2:16intelligence,
- 2:17focusing in on wanting to know more from
- 2:19the data around
- 2:21not only access to care, but understanding more
- 2:24provider costs and quality. Yet the data that
- 2:27they have access to isn't good. From a
- 2:30competitive landscape, they
- 2:32actually stated that they do not have any
- 2:34high quality data. When it came to access
- 2:36to care, they actually had moderate level of
- 2:39quality data. So really understanding how do we
- 2:42collectively help improve overall data to get them
- 2:46to the position of where they want to
- 2:47ultimately go
- 2:49with aligning network data
- 2:51with network design, which ultimately helps with organizational
- 2:54priorities.
- 2:55It's very interesting space. It's super hot space
- 2:58to go in. But, ultimately, when we're focusing
- 3:02in on network,
- 3:03it's not only about where the organizations are
- 3:06at today. It's how do we help them
- 3:08to get to the next level. They not
- 3:10only need to be network adequate,
- 3:12but they want to be able to use
- 3:13the network data to ultimately be competitive in
- 3:15the marketplace,
- 3:16have truly marketplace differentiators,
- 3:19and ultimately help to improve the member's experience.
- 3:23Well, that's fascinating to hear. And certainly, whatever
- 3:25you can do to get that competitive advantage,
- 3:27in today's health care space makes a big
- 3:29difference. So I appreciate your thoughts there and
- 3:32and is currently what Quastya Analytics is doing,
- 3:35to make a big difference.
- 3:36Karen, in hearing about reviewing
- 3:39the survey findings, which two or three themes
- 3:42resonated most strongly with your experience at HCSC,
- 3:46how is your organization approaching these challenges or
- 3:48opportunities? And can you share any examples of
- 3:51strategies or initiatives that are gaining traction?
- 3:54Yep. So that is a really, really good
- 3:56set of questions.
- 3:58We have a saying in the payer industry
- 4:00that I'm sure probably will resonate to some
- 4:02of the listeners where we are, data rich
- 4:05but information poor. And so, especially at HCSC,
- 4:09we have access to all kinds of different
- 4:12types of data, but I think making sure
- 4:14that you are
- 4:15leveraging the right insights in a cohesive manner
- 4:18so that you can have actionable results and
- 4:21strategies,
- 4:22that's really key. You have to know your
- 4:24members, you have to know your provider population,
- 4:26and you have to know what your organization's
- 4:28priorities are. So certainly for us,
- 4:30we are very much prioritizing,
- 4:32making sure that we are lowering medical cost
- 4:35as much as humanly possible,
- 4:37making sure our members are getting the right
- 4:39type of care they need when they need
- 4:40it,
- 4:41and then also making sure that while doing
- 4:44all of this, we're able to grow in
- 4:46a compliant manner,
- 4:48as we're trying to keep up with different
- 4:50regulatory
- 4:51expectations that continue to grow. And managing all
- 4:54of that with, you know, different levels of
- 4:56clinical needs is sometimes a challenge for us.
- 4:59So, certainly, I definitely agree with a lot
- 5:01of the survey results. There's a lot more
- 5:03too that we'll be discussing later today, but
- 5:05I know that HCSC is not necessarily a
- 5:08standout differentiator.
- 5:10We share a lot of the same pain
- 5:11points that Bob just spoke to.
- 5:14That's great to hear and really helpful to
- 5:15have that context
- 5:17in how, you know, you're navigating through today
- 5:20is really a lot of challenges within the
- 5:22health care space and but building and designing
- 5:24the future of health care, what an exciting
- 5:26opportunity that, you know, leaders within the space
- 5:29have today. So as we look toward that
- 5:31future of network strategy,
- 5:33what approaches
- 5:34will best position
- 5:36payers to deliver value and differentiation?
- 5:38How do you both see data and technology
- 5:41evolving to support this? What innovations are you
- 5:43most excited about?
- 5:45So,
- 5:46one of the wonderful things about being in
- 5:49this juncture is technology is on our side.
- 5:51And so with so many advancements in recent
- 5:55technology, just even in the last ten to
- 5:56fifteen years, data is not only more accessible,
- 5:59but there are more solutions and opportunities to
- 6:02do more with them.
- 6:04And so I think there is a world
- 6:07of options and different solutions for payers to
- 6:10take on depending on what their low hanging
- 6:13fruit, solutions are or approaches or opportunities they
- 6:16wanna go after as well as some of
- 6:17those, opportunities that take a longer pathway.
- 6:21Excellent points, Karen. I'd love to add that
- 6:24really when you're thinking about network strategy, it's
- 6:27understanding where you're at in the market and
- 6:29where do you wanna be when you grow
- 6:31up. Do you really wanna focus in on
- 6:32your broadest networks? Do you want to have
- 6:34a high performance network? Are you focused in
- 6:36on tiering? How do you ultimately help to
- 6:39set up the the appropriate networks and product
- 6:42benefit designs
- 6:43that are ultimately helping the member to get
- 6:45to the level of care that they need.
- 6:47It's absolutely critical when you're thinking about data
- 6:50and technology.
- 6:51It's important that you're considering all avenues, not
- 6:54only the network teams, but clinical quality, customer
- 6:57service product, and that you're able
- 7:00to utilize the dataset that can help a
- 7:02variety of those health care verticals to ultimately
- 7:05work together to utilize the data to make
- 7:08informed decisions
- 7:09to ultimately create the best experience for members.
- 7:13Fascinating to hear, and great to have those
- 7:15types of capabilities.
- 7:16I I know everything you mentioned,
- 7:18really is, you know, truly top of mind
- 7:21for so many health plan leaders and executives
- 7:23today.
- 7:24Before we wrap up here, I'm curious. Is
- 7:26there anything we didn't cover or final thoughts
- 7:28you'd like to share? And, Bob, we'll start
- 7:30with you. Great question, Lauren. One of the
- 7:32things that's really critical when you're thinking about
- 7:35innovation and really taking a step forward is
- 7:38understanding
- 7:39where you are and ultimately where you want
- 7:41to go. When you think about competitive intelligence,
- 7:44understanding what the competitors have,
- 7:47being able to break down down that level
- 7:49of information in terms of things about what
- 7:51clinical outcomes, thinking about quality, thinking about costs,
- 7:55thinking about
- 7:56are the providers ultimately following things like clinical
- 7:59practice guidelines?
- 8:00Are they billing for additional services that those
- 8:03members don't need?
- 8:04The payers are very familiar with this space
- 8:07knowing, working very closely with HEDIS performance measures,
- 8:11star ratings, cap surveys. If you look at
- 8:13those surveys and performance measures,
- 8:15a lot of those are really driven by
- 8:17ultimately the member experience. So it's not only
- 8:20building that that appropriate member experience.
- 8:23It's also being able to understand what are
- 8:26the key differences
- 8:27in your space and how do you ultimately
- 8:29differentiate yourselves
- 8:30from your competitors with the utilization of network
- 8:33data.
- 8:34That's fascinating. Thank you so much, Bob. And,
- 8:36Karen, what are your final thoughts?
- 8:38I think Bob hit on some really great
- 8:41points.
- 8:41In general, I think it's a really exciting
- 8:44time for payers. Our industry is evolving and
- 8:46growing, and there's more asked of us to
- 8:49serve our members.
- 8:51And so in general, I'm excited to see
- 8:53how we can leverage any level of data
- 8:56enhancement, if you will, or data filtering
- 8:59in order for us to keep up because,
- 9:00again, that's just what our members require.
- 9:03Well, thank you, Bob and Karen, for your
- 9:05time and insights today. We also want to
- 9:07thank our podcast sponsor, Quest Analytics.
