- 2:12that's going to be made during our show as far as what they're

- 2:21In Iowa. In Iowa, just in the state of I.
- 2:23This is an Iowa exclusive contest, if you will.
- 2:26Not even a contest. It's just a prize pool.
- 2:28Yeah. And my wife when I was
- 2:30explaining this to her last night, she I would like to have
- 2:32Derek's wallet too. Yeah, I think a lot of people.
- 2:34Would that wallet's pretty thick?
- 2:35Yeah, he's he's doing well, certainly.
- 2:37So starting tomorrow on the Circa Sports Iowa app for
- 2:42betting just on the app, and it doesn't have to be a single bet
- 2:45in totality. Bet $100 during the prize period
- 2:48starts. Tomorrow overall.
- 2:49So if I bet $10. 1010 bets you hit your $100 marker.
- 2:53If you do that during the promotion period, starts
- 2:56tomorrow, goes through December 22nd.
- 2:58If you bet $100, you're going to earn a share.
- 3:01If you bet $500, you'll get a bonus share there during the
- 3:04course of that nine day period. So it starts tomorrow on the
- 3:07Circus Sports Iowa app. Make sure you download the
- 3:10Circus Sports Iowa app and get involved and a chance to win
- 3:12some of Derek's money. I'm all for it.
- 3:14It's going to be fun. I'm going to absolutely do that
- 3:17over the weekend. All right, let's let's get into
- 3:19this. So we'll get our take on what we
- 3:21saw last night. Just a terrific 48 hours of
- 3:23basketball at Hilton Coliseum with the ladies on Wednesday
- 3:27dovetailing into the men's game last night.
- 3:30Trent, I thought that was the best I've seen.
- 3:31I will play all year. I think by by a long ways, yes,
- 3:35they lost the game. I know there's no such thing as
- 3:37moral victories. They have to feel somewhat good
- 3:39about the effort that they put up because this is a good Iowa
- 3:42State basketball game. I don't hear anything about let
- 3:44down after Purdue. I don't want to hear that.
- 3:46I won't. I won't entertain that one
- 3:48little bit. Iowa came to play.
- 3:50Iowa State, on the other hand, they had a phenomenal start to
- 3:54the second-half cut. The deficit took the lead and it
- 3:57was a a nail biter literally right until the bitter end.
- 4:01Opportunities and Iowa had a chance and they said, you know,
- 4:04how are they going to get there. It was the kind of game that
- 4:06they needed. They needed to be that rugged
- 4:08kind of affair. Didn't think that they could get
- 4:10involved in a shootout to have it happen.
- 4:12Getting down 10, get that 8 nothing run, get it back to A2
- 4:14point game and then you think of the end and so many things that
- 4:18woulda shoulda coulda from the Iowa perspective.
- 4:21He stripped the ball from behind.
- 4:23It goes between fool Garris's legs.
- 4:25I mean, you you have a steal with a chance to to take the
- 4:28lead. When that happens, the time out,
- 4:29three Iowa players are there for the jump ball.
- 4:31Yeah, one Cyclone player and Iowa without a time out.
- 4:34They get a time out and they get to keep possession.
- 4:37They're just Americans. Was it Turi?
- 4:39On the floor with I can't remember who it was, might have
- 4:41been Jefferson, but regardless, yeah, just so many different
- 4:44things that they were so close they were and this if.
- 4:48This one, if you can, was the was the cyclone.
- 4:51If this would have happened in Carver, I think we could have
- 4:54saw that, but I don't think anybody envisioned this
- 4:56happening. No, I'm with you.
- 4:57I'm. With you, that environment, that
- 4:59whistle, the foul disparity that's going to happen, all
- 5:03those things to do that in that building.
- 5:05I said yesterday I need to see proof of concept.
- 5:08I think we have the proof of concept now that this team, it
- 5:11has to be a certain way that they're gonna have to win
- 5:13against the elite teams, but it can happen.
- 5:16No, I'm with you. After the Michigan State game, I
- 5:18started to ask myself, I wonder if, because we're gonna try and
- 5:21sell that this is a tournament team, and I wasn't so sure after
- 5:25they got blown out in East Lansing.
- 5:27A lot of teams do. They are that this is a
- 5:29tournament team. If they played like that, I
- 5:31thought the Drake guys plays. Are you gonna watch off last
- 5:33night? I really did.
- 5:34How about Tate Sage? We talked about him yesterday as
- 5:36a guy whose arrow was pointing up, and if you didn't buy Stock
- 5:39and Tate Sage yesterday, I know there's no such thing.
- 5:41But it's too late because now the the country knows about him.
- 5:45He's a hell of a player and he was the last one, right?
- 5:47He was he. Was the one holdout, I don't
- 5:49know if it's a holdout, but he was the last one announced that
- 5:52he's going to join McCullum. But hell of a game.
- 5:56You know, there's times I don't want to be critical of
- 5:59Jefferson. He's the best player in floor.
- 6:01He was, yes. It does he try to do too much.
- 6:04I mean, early in the basketball game he's getting putting the
- 6:07ball on the floor. He was getting a stolen from
- 6:09behind. It just seemed like he was out
- 6:12of sorts early in the game. Missed a lot of bunnies inside
- 6:15he. Did it just like slow down, get
- 6:18your teammates involved and then your game is going to take off?
- 6:22And I I just thought he tried to do too much at times.
- 6:24I don't think so because he is their best player, he's the most
- 6:27complete player and certainly they're both best offensive
- 6:29player because Manchilovich. It's still that inconsistency
- 6:32and though it's better that it's been, you just are going to have
- 6:35those moments. They need Jeff and they need
- 6:37Jefferson. If you're going to win a game in
- 6:39the Sweet 16, you're going to win an Elite 8 game, you need
- 6:41Joshua Jefferson to be a star in that game.
- 6:44And because of that, I don't have a problem with it.
- 6:46I want him to be aggressive. I want him to take that shot.
- 6:49I want him to fire up the three early in the shot clock as he
- 6:52knocked one down as Nertz went under the screen.
- 6:54You want to see those kind of things for Jefferson.
- 6:57For me, because he is the difference maker.
- 6:59He is the guy that takes them. They're good enough to make the
- 7:02tournament into a Sweet 16, but that's it.
- 7:04You talk about elevating your program, taking that next step.
- 7:07I think Jefferson is the guy that can do that.
- 7:09I want him aggressive all the time.
- 7:11Yeah, he certainly was right off the jump.
- 7:13I thought he was a little out of sorts early, but he got it
- 7:15going. Killian Toure continues to just
- 7:19impress every time he takes the floor.
- 7:21Trent, I don't know what his ceiling is.
- 7:23Sadly, I don't know how much time he's going to be spending
- 7:25in Ames if he keeps playing like this.
- 7:27My God, he can flat out guard you.
- 7:29This guy, we we've seen TJ have some guys that excel on the
- 7:34defensive end of the floor. This guy might be at the head of
- 7:36the class. Yeah, he absolutely.
- 7:38He's quick. I haven't seen anybody embarrass
- 7:42him as far as, you know, breaking his ankles.
- 7:44I'm sure that'll happen at some point, yes.
- 7:45But my God, Toure is like he's just so much fun to watch at his
- 7:50craft. You know, looking at the numbers
- 7:53and all the guys on the players, when you look at defensive
- 7:56rating, they're all good. That's to play for TJ
- 7:59Otzenberger. You got to be done good on that
- 8:00head. In fact, the worst player on the
- 8:02team, quote UN quote worst a player on the team at this
- 8:05moment is Jamarian Bateman. He's a 97.
- 8:08So 100's a baseline. If you're under 100, that's
- 8:10good. Yeah, he's the worst at 97 on
- 8:13the whole team, which is just absolutely crazy.
- 8:15And out of the guards, Torrey's number.
- 8:17One. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 8:18He's in a back court with Taman Lipsey and he is rated a better
- 8:22defender than Taman Lipsey, who is physical and tough and rugged
- 8:26and everything that you want as a defender on the perimeter and
- 8:29now with two guys, and that's another thing we talked about
- 8:32yesterday, to have two guys like that, to have Lipsy.
- 8:36He didn't have to go out there and guard Bennett Sturtz for
- 8:383032 minutes. You were able to put Toria, we
- 8:41were able to give him different looks.
- 8:42You were able to throw a bunch of different guys and most
- 8:44importantly, 2 elite, elite on ball defenders on whatever point
- 8:49guard, not just Bennett Sturtz, but everyone that they faced
- 8:51this year. That's another difference in
- 8:53this team you looked the last couple of years.
- 8:55They're good defensively because that's how they play.
- 8:58But they didn't have these kind of on ball defenders, not two of
- 9:00them, not an extra 1 to go with Lipsy and they have that now and
- 9:04that's another difference with this one.
- 9:06No, they really are. They're every bit as good as
- 9:08advertised. That was a good test for them
- 9:10last night. Challenged them faced some some
- 9:13circumstances that they really hadn't been in all year and they
- 9:16passed that test came back from big deficit took the lead out
- 9:19into the second-half opened up a lead and then here comes Iowa to
- 9:23their credit and this back and forth down the stretch just a
- 9:25hell of a game I don't man Cyhawk 2025 lived up to every
- 9:29single bit of the advance Billy and that was was that one of the
- 9:32only games last night Oh yeah there there was and there's none
- 9:36tonight it's. A very late slate, so.
- 9:38It's finals, right? It's got to be what's behind it,
- 9:40right? Yes, I mean, that's the excuse.
- 9:43Sure, and I mean there's a few games tomorrow and there's some
- 9:46decent games tomorrow. Let's get Eugene repay in here.
- 9:48desmoinesregister.com courtside last night watching that bad boy
- 9:52Eugene Trenton Kent, thanks for coming on.
- 9:54Good to speak with you Eugene Trenton.
- 9:56I just commenting what a terrific 2 nights of side Hawk
- 9:59basketball. The women getting things
- 10:01underway on Wednesday, followed up by this men's affair last
- 10:04night. Just a fantastic 48 hours of of
- 10:07basketball at Hilton Coliseum. Fantastic 48 hours for sure.
- 10:13I mean both games came down to the wire, both teams and both
- 10:16games never quit until the final buzzer.
- 10:19It was just an exciting 2/2 day stretch at at Hilton Coliseum
- 10:23for sure. You look at last night and the
- 10:27building when I would got out to that lead.
- 10:30Now one component I had one of my Cyclone friends that texted
- 10:33me last night and said this is as few of Iowa fans as I can
- 10:35ever remember. What was that a fact being in
- 10:37Hilton and when Iowa had that little run, it was a murmur.
- 10:40It certainly wasn't like the night before when we heard loud
- 10:43cheers when Iowa was making the runs and making plays.
- 10:46That was not the case. But that is about as quiet as I
- 10:48can remember. Hilton for a long stretch of
- 10:51time, Iowa in the first half of the game when they were taking
- 10:53it out of them and and really playing at that high level.
- 10:56Eugene, you've been in the environment now a couple of
- 10:58different times. Did did you notice that in your
- 11:00first side hop game, at least at Hilton, your experience there
- 11:03and what felt like a different kind of environment than we're
- 11:05used to? It felt like a different kind of
- 11:08environment for sure. It definitely seemed like it a
- 11:11majority leaned or were donned and and Cardinal and and Gold
- 11:16definitely outnumber the Iowa fans.
- 11:18But just the way that I will play it, especially through
- 11:20those first 12 minutes of the game, just took the crowd out of
- 11:23it for sure. Eugene Blake Buchanan left the
- 11:27game. I know he came back in.
- 11:29Any update on him? Any concern?
- 11:31I guess maybe on Blake Buchanan who had to leave.
- 11:35Does did DJ mention the injury at all following the game last
- 11:38night? He appeared to roll his right
- 11:40ankle but came back and and clearly finished out the game
- 11:44there. There didn't seem to be too much
- 11:46concern and once he got tended to, we saw him come back maybe 3
- 11:49or 4 minutes after he initially went down.
- 11:52But it was definitely a scary moment for sure for Cyclone
- 11:54fans. I mean, he'd been playing well
- 11:56throughout the season and seemed to be a perfect complimentary
- 11:58piece to Joshua Jefferson. And so when you see a guy like
- 12:00that go down after grabbing a rebound, definitely cruise
- 12:04disappointment from from the fans there, but total relief to
- 12:08see him finish out the game and and continue to operate and play
- 12:11at a a good level because he made some key plays down the
- 12:14stretch there. No, he really did.
- 12:16So Mulder has to come in. What?
- 12:17What do we know about Plea? Plea is day-to-day also with a
- 12:22right ankle sprain. It's not a groin injury, but he
- 12:24he is day-to-day and and he'll be closely monitored.
- 12:28We'll see how they handle the last few non conference games.
- 12:31But right now he's he's day-to-day with an ankle sprain.
- 12:35So I want to ask you about Manchilovich for the first time
- 12:38really this season. Was it Iowa took him out of the
- 12:41game? Was it back to what we saw
- 12:43really the last couple of years with him where he just wasn't
- 12:46overly aggressive? What did you see from Blonde in
- 12:48the game? And one of the games that he
- 12:50just didn't shoot it a whole lot.
- 12:52Yeah, he, he hit a couple of key threes, but for the most part it
- 12:55seemed like Iowa was keying in on him.
- 12:58I, I don't think it was truly a red flag or, or cause for
- 13:01concern. I think it was just the flow of
- 13:03the game itself. It was definitely a slower paced
- 13:05game. It was a physical 1.
- 13:07And it seemed like, you know, Milliman Tillovich tried to get
- 13:09his when he could, But, but for the most part, you know, if you
- 13:12didn't see him forced anything unnecessary, which, which if
- 13:15you're a psycho fan, you got to be happy about.
- 13:17But I, I think it was just more so just the flow of the game
- 13:20and, and how things were going at that point.
- 13:22Yeah, I think you're probably right.
- 13:24So now a couple of, I don't want to say laughers, lay UPS, but
- 13:27certainly the schedule softens up over the Christmas break
- 13:30before Big 12 plays, Big 12 play gets underway.
- 13:34What do you think? TJ's?
- 13:35What was his take away? What will he get the group
- 13:38together back at practice And they'll work on what they'll try
- 13:41and tweak what before the Big 12 gets here.
- 13:44Eugene. For him, it seems to be more of
- 13:46a mental mindset, more of a mental component.
- 13:49I think that there was a certain disappointment with how the team
- 13:53started the game and even just played throughout it because,
- 13:56yeah, they had that great second-half run there where they
- 13:59rattled off a 22 to 4 run coming out of the gates into the
- 14:03second-half and stormed ahead. But there was still this idea
- 14:07that TJ Altoberger wants to drone to his team, that you need
- 14:10to be consistent every night. You can't have these Lols.
- 14:12You can't have teams pushing you around.
- 14:15You can't assume that things are just guaranteed.
- 14:18And so you know when when you look at how they came out
- 14:20against Purdue, they're in a hostile environment, Number one
- 14:24team in the nation and they didn't play.
- 14:26They played very free out there. They played with no pressure.
- 14:28They played aggressively against Iowa at home.
- 14:32You're the number four team in the country.
- 14:33You're wildly favored to win by double digits.
- 14:36They look stiff. They look shell shocked.
- 14:38They look rattled in the beginning.
- 14:40And you saw TJ also Burger Show, there's lots of emotion and some
- 14:44of these timeouts ripping into his team, challenging them and
- 14:47ultimately they responded. But I you know, of all the
- 14:50teams, you look at their non conference schedule, I don't
- 14:53think anybody anticipated Iowa to be the team that had the
- 14:57cycles in our first halftime deficit.
- 15:00Eugene, take us into the under 4 timeout.
- 15:03Maybe what ignited the team was ATJ might have been the other
- 15:06coach and that was Jimmy Rogers dropping the F bomb on the Hawks
- 15:09and take us into that one a little bit in what was a
- 15:12memorable moment certainly. Jimmy Rogers definitely endeared
- 15:16himself to the cycle unfaithful it.
- 15:18You know, obviously he had no impact in the game on the box
- 15:21score, but I think you can credit him with an assist, maybe
- 15:25maybe an honorary one because you know, at that point I was
- 15:28state was down. TJ's ripping into his team and
- 15:30during the time out and then all of a sudden he makes his
- 15:33introductory speech and then drops the F bomb and you know
- 15:36what? But just a mic drop moment and
- 15:38that really reignited the crowd. Hilton Coliseum.
- 15:41So, you know, for Jimmy Rogers, it's been a very eventful week,
- 15:45first week in Ames. And what a way to introduce
- 15:49yourself to the public for the first time.
- 15:51Yeah, no doubt about it. Personally, I got on the phone
- 15:54this morning. I cancelled my grandchildren's
- 15:56membership to the Little Cyclone Club, but.
- 15:58Yeah, yeah, Billary, you're the ones that doesn't drop a deaf
- 16:01Bob. I don't have any grandkids
- 16:03either. That's true.
- 16:03Yeah. Anyways, So other than that,
- 16:07yeah, I'm indifferent. The fans love that.
- 16:10Ate it up. Look, and let's be honest, if
- 16:12this was done at at Carver Hawkeye and the black and gold
- 16:15fans, if whatever, whatever your colors, right, whether you liked
- 16:18it, whether you didn't like it, it goes with being and that's
- 16:21part of the rivalry. And thank God we have that here
- 16:23in the state of Iowa because we wouldn't have a job in a lot of
- 16:26ways. All right, Le more on Jimmy
- 16:27Rogers. What are your thoughts?
- 16:29You were there obviously when the announcement was made.
- 16:31You probably camped out or spent most of your weekend in Ames
- 16:34last week. But we're, you know, just So
- 16:36what, what you've seen from the new the new football coach.
- 16:41What one thing was seeking out for me about Jimmy Rodgers is
- 16:43that he's midwester and through just throughout his whole
- 16:47coaching career, even you look back at South Dakota State, he
- 16:50mentioned being very familiar with recruiting in the Midwest,
- 16:53knowing what players are looking for, knowing what families are
- 16:56looking for, just seeing the type of character and the type
- 17:00of vibe that there is. So he's very familiar with
- 17:02recruiting in Iowa, Minnesota, you name it.
- 17:04And I think that's something that's going to bode very well
- 17:07for him as he makes the jump over to the Big 12.
- 17:10Just being familiar with recruiting.
- 17:11Obviously when you're South Dakota State, you're going to
- 17:14lose a lot of those targets. And he mentioned guys like Bo
- 17:16Goodwin and, and being familiar with Cooper Evil and some of
- 17:20these guys already on the Iowa State team.
- 17:22So I think those ties will work well for him.
- 17:25For him, it just seems to be more of like another blue collar
- 17:28hard hat, hard working guy. He's won at South Dakota State,
- 17:33He's won a national title there at Washington State, even though
- 17:38he went six and six, people will look at that and go, oh, he went
- 17:40six and six and in his first season of FDS, but four of those
- 17:44losses were close ones. He pushed some TFT bound teams
- 17:48to the end and put them on upset alert.
- 17:50And and also just one thing that stood out to me was when he was
- 17:53at Washington State, he had to rebuild the roster from scratch.
- 17:56He had 70 new players. I think this is a guy that's
- 17:59really bought into the culture around at Iowa State already.
- 18:02I mean, obviously, you know, we need to see what his coaching
- 18:05staff is going to look like, what his team is going to look
- 18:07like. He's going to run a form down
- 18:09lineman front. So if you're someone who's
- 18:11taking up the three three stack, you're going to love to see a
- 18:14little more push up front. And I'm just curious right now.
- 18:17I mean, right now, you you want to hold some of the the
- 18:20judgments until we see the roster come together and the
- 18:22coaching staff come together. But I think he's aced his first
- 18:27press conference and now he aced it last night in front of the
- 18:30Hilton Coliseum crowd. Last thing for me, apparently
- 18:33Rocco Beck be found were reporting that Rocco Beck
- 18:36underwent successful labrum surgery on his non throwing
- 18:38shoulder which would take him out of spring practice, which to
- 18:43me makes it more likely that he stays in Ames because he's got
- 18:47one year left. If there was an opportunity for
- 18:50him to leave. I'm not saying he's damaged
- 18:52goods and I'm sure he'll be fine by the time we get to August and
- 18:55into September, but I think that this improves the chances of
- 18:58Rocco remaining a cyclone for his senior year.
- 19:01How about that, Eugene? Yeah, and I also want to add to
- 19:04that, the Iowa State confirmed that report to me.
- 19:07And they also disclosed that Roccobec had a a joint sprain in
- 19:10his throwing shoulder as well. So double prong there.
- 19:15Obviously, you know, you can read into the tea leaves how you
- 19:17want. You know, I'm sure Iowa State
- 19:19fans won't feel well, you know, maximum relief until they see
- 19:23him out there next year. But I, I do see the theory and
- 19:27I'd agree with that. But of course, you know, you
- 19:29never know what can, what can happen.
- 19:31But he's dealing with shoulder injuries in both shoulders.
- 19:34We'll see, hopefully a good recovery for him.
- 19:37But yeah, I I can see why that would lead to hopefully him
- 19:41staying. Good stuff.
- 19:43Eugene Repay, Des Moines Register covers Iowa stayed
- 19:45along with Travis Hines, Tommy Birch as well.
- 19:47Eugene repay joining Trenton I on Fridays.
- 19:51Eugene, thank you for doing this as always.
- 19:53We will reach out next week. Eugene, you have a good weekend.
- 19:55Thank you. Same.
- 19:56To you guys, thank you. Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 20:00Eugene. Repay, Des Moines Register.
- 20:02Alright, good stuff. Let's get Rachel character in
- 20:04here. Rachel, how are you?
- 20:05Mary Greeley. I'm doing very well, thank you
- 20:08for having me. So.
- 20:10It's an exciting night in Aims where you.
- 20:12At the game last night. I was not at the game.
- 20:14We were watching it very intently.
- 20:16For sure, you, you kind of raise your hand, raise your hands
- 20:19there when my theory about Rocco Beck may be coming back for
- 20:22another year because of his surgical procedure.
- 20:25Absolutely, I have a nine year old that absolutely loves him
- 20:29and all he's ever known is Campbell time and has met Rocco
- 20:33and it's fantastic. So we're we're, we're proling
- 20:36for him to stay. Absolutely.
- 20:37All right, we continue on here. It's the variety 2 Days of
- 20:39Compassion Radio on you with Mary Greeley.
- 20:42Obviously Trent and I have learned a whole lot about
- 20:44variety Club over well leading up doing our homework as to what
- 20:47we were going to be doing. But certainly the stories that
- 20:49we've told a they're sad a lot of times, unfortunate most of
- 20:52the time, but how would they helped you guys at Mary Greeley?
- 20:55You know, they have just been an incredible partner for the
- 20:58Medical Center and the 13 counties of families that we
- 21:02serve. Do you?
- 21:03Serve that many I would never know.
- 21:05Wow. Central Iowa.
- 21:06So it's really, they're helping us provide the best care for
- 21:09those children in central Iowa. Through their generosity, we've
- 21:13been able to purchase specialized equipment like these
- 21:15panda warmers and additional neonatal monitors that allow us
- 21:20to keep the babies with the mother.
- 21:23We don't have a, we don't have a separate NICU.
- 21:25And so even in times of more critical care, we can keep the
- 21:29babies with the mother in the room.
- 21:30And so it's huge. It's huge.
- 21:32And so our nurses, it links directly to their devices and
- 21:36they can come in if there's distress.
- 21:37And that's Variety Club that enabled that for you guys.
- 21:40That's awesome. Allowed us to purchase that
- 21:42equipment so that we can keep them with us.
- 21:44So yeah, in addition to that, just the import of programs like
- 21:49SIDS prevention. So they provide the sleep sacks
- 21:52for every patient and family that leaves the hospital.
- 21:56So the education really starts there and we can keep those
- 22:00babies safe even when they leave us.
- 22:02So, you know, I would like to say that they not only have
- 22:06helped us deliver babies, but also that Peace of Mind to
- 22:09parents when they leave. You know, one thing that
- 22:12continually jumps out to me is this compassion fund and you get
- 22:16to see first hand that quick turn around, which is so
- 22:19important, what variety does and, and opportunities for
- 22:21people to help out variety and, and help us with what we're
- 22:24doing with them today is that impact when people are looking
- 22:28around, not knowing how they're going to be able to make it to
- 22:30the next paycheck to to get to the hospital, fill up their gas
- 22:33and what the compassion fund does.
- 22:36Yeah, absolutely. I think when you have a child
- 22:38that's critically ill and looking at that hospital stay,
- 22:41the parents wanna put everything else on hold.
- 22:44They wanna be bedside with that child.
- 22:46And so the ability to have these funds to, it really empowers our
- 22:51nurses to be able to help. And I think that tangible impact
- 22:56that they can have to help them pay for gas to if they need to
- 23:01travel Tiowa City to the Children's Hospital or they've
- 23:04been in the hospital for a long time and need a meal, or we've
- 23:07simply even bought birthday cakes for a child that's in the
- 23:11hospital on their birthday. And, and the nurses through this
- 23:14compassion fund are empowered to do that.
- 23:16It's meaningful for them because they feel like they're making an
- 23:20impact right there. Such a great 'cause in our final
- 23:23minute, I'll just turn it over to you.
- 23:25It's what would you like to make sure that our listening audience
- 23:28is aware of the impact that Variety has here in the state of
- 23:32Iowa and in Central Iowa particular?
- 23:34Yeah, absolutely. I just on behalf of the Mary
- 23:36Graylic Medical Center, I just want to extend our heartfelt
- 23:39thanks to Variety for this effort.
- 23:42And all of you that do donate to the 'cause I would say to
- 23:46everyone listening, I encourage you to support their work.
- 23:49Every gift, every dollar really does make a difference for the
- 23:53children and families across our state.
- 23:55And every dollar that is donated during our two hour show today,
- 23:59our friends at Wild Rose Casino going to match that donation.
- 24:03So well done. Not surprised the good people at
- 24:07Wild Rose are going out of the way to do that.
- 24:10Rachel, good to meet you. Thank you.
- 24:11Thank you for having. Congratulations on your
- 24:13Cyclones. Well, back-to-back wins over
- 24:16Iowa Hilton Coliseum. Absolutely.
- 24:18After the week, we needed to end on a high note.
- 24:20You did. Thanks, Rachel.
- 24:22Good luck. We'll take your time out.
- 24:23Tom Caker will join us on the other side.
- 24:25We'll get Tom's perspective on what he saw.
- 24:27Last night's bowl prep continues for Iowa's.
- 24:30They will head to Tampa. Did you see the press conference
- 24:34yesterday? Ference and Clark and Lee were
- 24:36both in Tampa. I didn't.
- 24:37Yeah, they normally do those things, get the coaches there.
- 24:39And, I mean, I didn't learn anything out of the ordinary.
- 24:42He was a bunch of, you know, coach speak if you will.
- 24:44Glad to be here. Ference has been going to this
- 24:46bowl game for a long time. Yes, he has.
- 24:48I mean a long time. Couple of decades now over a
- 24:51couple of decades. Truly is unbelievable.
- 24:54So good stuff. All right, we'll take a time
- 24:55out. We'll come back.
- 24:56Tom Caker joins us. Miller and Condon, we're glad
- 24:58you're with us wherever you're listening.

- 25:49They will take you until 6:00. No overtime Iowa here tonight.
- 25:52Let's get to our friend Tom Caker at hawkeyereport.com, part
- 25:55of on three Media. Tom joins Us Weekly. 99% of
- 26:00those says on Friday, but sometimes we have.
- 26:03We have to move around a little, but Tom is with us.
- 26:06Tom, thanks for doing this, as always.
- 26:07Appreciated. Tom Caker Yeah.
- 26:09Look, my take away of the game last night was I thought I would
- 26:13play their best game of the year.
- 26:14This is, as you know, is a really good Iowa State outfit
- 26:18and I thought I would did McCollum had a good game plan.
- 26:21Obviously the start of the second-half didn't go their way,
- 26:24but as as much as as much as anything, I was really impressed
- 26:28by Iowa last night. Yeah, I thought they played a
- 26:32terrific game. I thought they really came out,
- 26:35played strong. You know, the the Michigan State
- 26:38game on the road in that first half, that's where things kind
- 26:42of went a little bit sideways for him, where Michigan State
- 26:46went on a little bit of a run and opened up a lead that Iowa
- 26:48could just never get close to. And this time it was Iowa
- 26:52opening up that 13 point lead after Bennett Sturtz 3 and you
- 26:56thought whether maybe something crazy is going to happen here.
- 27:00And then Iowa State, just Jefferson was terrific and
- 27:05Munchylovitch made some big plays and and Lipsy and they
- 27:10just they just did what really good teams do.
- 27:14They they grounded grind away and built a 10 point leading to
- 27:18Iowa's credit, they came right back at him and cut it down to
- 27:21one on the last minute and and just couldn't get one of those
- 27:25loose balls to go their way. And and that was the ball game,
- 27:29but terrific basketball game. Terrific game.
- 27:33Yep, love to hear from Ben McCullum.
- 27:35Afterwards he said I'd like to win no moral victories.
- 27:39It's something that probably this program needs the way they
- 27:41competed in that kind of environment because boy, it felt
- 27:44like if maybe the previous regime was in charge, that thing
- 27:47would have turned into a 30 point blowout.
- 27:48It went the other direction. They ain't nothing run to get
- 27:50them back within two and opportunities a late.
- 27:53You can see the DNA certainly changing this Iowa basketball
- 27:56team. Do you feel that as well, Tom?
- 27:59I do, but it's just, you know, totally different team, too.
- 28:03So I do wonder one thing about Ben.
- 28:09He's not as comfortable, or at least it doesn't seem like he's
- 28:13as comfortable doing a little ref working.
- 28:16He just kind of lets it go. And he might have to do some of
- 28:21that because you look at the disparity in fouls last night
- 28:25and even the Maryland game. I mean, the last two games,
- 28:29Iowa's opponents are 41 for 61 from the foul line.
- 28:33Iowa is 9 of 17. Geez, yeah, I didn't realize
- 28:38that. And, and, and, and, and I'll say
- 28:42this too, because then you can, you can kind of say, well, maybe
- 28:45they just shot a bunch of threes.
- 28:46Maybe they're taking bad shots or different shots that don't
- 28:50create foul situations. Iowa and Iowa State both shot 15
- 28:54threes last night. Iowa and Maryland shot 18 threes
- 28:59last weekend. So it's not like Iowa was going
- 29:02nuts from three. It's the the whistles not going.
- 29:07I was way for whatever reason. Maybe they're not driving it and
- 29:11creating enough contact? I don't know, but that's a
- 29:14little weird to me. Yeah, no, I didn't realize when
- 29:19you put the Maryland game in there just what those numbers
- 29:22might add up to Tom Tate Sage looks as though he's arrived and
- 29:27is going to be a major factor on this team if the game against
- 29:30Maryland, which really to me, and I think I don't want to put
- 29:33words and trench mouth, but we both felt maybe a coming out
- 29:35party of sorts for Sage as a Hawkeye last night just took it
- 29:39to a whole nother level. Tate Sage, who I think was
- 29:42probably one of the latest to sign with McCollum and the last
- 29:46to get there. He's certainly coming on as, as
- 29:50we hit the, you know, toward the end of the non conference
- 29:52season, Tate Sage going to be a problem.
- 29:55Yeah, he is really good and he's really fearless and that he just
- 30:00doesn't, you know, he doesn't care.
- 30:03He said go keep going after guys.
- 30:06Doesn't care about the reputation, anything like that.
- 30:09They're going to say he can say the same thing about Isaiah
- 30:11Howard, who just seems. Great.
- 30:14They're just going to keep coming after people and playing
- 30:18hard and and the arrows pointing up for both those guys.
- 30:22So, you know, the good, good days are ahead for this Iowa
- 30:28team, at least that those kind of that that wing guard wing
- 30:32forward type position. One who go to Bennett Sturtz,
- 30:36who was shaking his wrist around a little bit, looked like he
- 30:39bothered him for a pretty long stretch there in the
- 30:41second-half. He was sitting in the corner.
- 30:43He was not heavily involved in the offense.
- 30:45I thought that was certainly surprising with the usage.
- 30:49McCollum was after asked after the game, you know the 40
- 30:51minutes and said no and you want to tell him he's going to come
- 30:54out Coach, you got to take him out.
- 30:56You're not going to get through this grind of a 20 game Big 10
- 30:58schedule and the way that he's going to be defended and get
- 31:01through it healthy. It is time.
- 31:03Couple minutes, a half, 36 minutes a game, 35 minutes a
- 31:06game as opposed to 40. I think it's important.
- 31:09Are we ever going to get Ben McCallum along in that line of
- 31:11thinking, though? That's a great question because
- 31:15I think at times Ben let's Bennett dictate how much time he
- 31:21played. And he just unless Bennett wants
- 31:24to come out, he doesn't take him out.
- 31:26And I said something as a coach, you got to just dictate that and
- 31:30you got to say, well, you know, and, and I know Ben will just
- 31:32say, well, they got all these media timeouts.
- 31:35He gets breaks, then we take him off the ball and we put him over
- 31:38in the corner for possession. And he's, you know, he can, he
- 31:41can stay away from things, but his presence out there still
- 31:45draws attention to him. But sometimes you just got to
- 31:49get him off his feet a little bit.
- 31:51I will say this, Bennett is in incredible shape.
- 31:54I mean, he told me before the season he'll go out his, I
- 31:57didn't know this, his mom was a track athlete and he'll go out
- 32:02on like 5 to 10 mile runs and just for conditioning sake.
- 32:07So he's in incredibly good shape.
- 32:09But it's still that's this is a grind.
- 32:12This is a big time basketball that he's going to be playing
- 32:16in. This is no disrespect to the
- 32:19Missouri Valley. This ain't the Missouri Valley.
- 32:21He's going to take a beat. And the physical toll, he said
- 32:26his wrist is OK. He just kind of fell funny on
- 32:28it, but he's going to be OK. But come February, how's he
- 32:34going to feel And I, and I'm going to dive into this today
- 32:38probably, but just his shooting percentages in the second-half
- 32:42are are they seem like they're much less than they are in the
- 32:451st. Yeah, excellent point, Tom Cake
- 32:49are part of on three Media. hawkeyereport.com joins us.
- 32:52Tom, let's switch to football. I saw that both Ference and Lee,
- 32:56who spent time in Tampa yesterday, as they normally do a
- 32:59couple of weeks before the game, just meeting with some of the
- 33:02local media, etcetera, starting to drum up some publicity for
- 33:06the match up. You know, it's when you, when
- 33:08you listen ferrets speak. It just, it just kind of dawned
- 33:11on me, you know, how many times he's been there, you know, going
- 33:14way back to the, I guess he called it the turn of the
- 33:17century because that's what it is, right?
- 33:19So the turn of the century when they first got there, when they
- 33:22first started playing in Tampa, just how many times he's been
- 33:25there. And, and it's not lost on him
- 33:28what this bowl game has meant to, you know, the his, his
- 33:30career at the University of Iowa and now where they're at.
- 33:34Good to see. What are you hearing about bowl
- 33:35prep? Yeah, and this, you think about
- 33:38it, this was their first January 1 bowl win, that O 4 game
- 33:43against Florida and Ron Zook. That was the first time they
- 33:45want to January 1st bowl game in his in his tenure.
- 33:49So it it has special meaning. There's three and three in that
- 33:53game right now. They're just doing a lot of
- 33:58developmental work until after finals week and then they'll
- 34:01start buckling down and getting the guys back out there.
- 34:04But right now they're letting some of those starters that
- 34:06logged, you know, 6700 snaps this year.
- 34:10They're going to get those guys off their feet and get them out
- 34:12away from the the field a little bit and let them heal up and
- 34:16going to get ready. But this would be a good match
- 34:19up. Vanderbilt teams really good and
- 34:21they're well coached. Clark Lee does a good job.
- 34:25Pavi is obviously going to be a, you know, probably finished
- 34:29second to the Heisman, I think, and and he's he's a certainly
- 34:35going to be an interesting player to be around during the
- 34:38bowl prep. He seems to seems to make a lot
- 34:41of headlines, you know? Not just him, his whole family.
- 34:46And his whole family, yeah, I mean, it'll be, it'll be fun.
- 34:50And it's something different for Iowa.
- 34:52I was worried they were going to get Tennessee again.
- 34:54And I was like, I want to hear his Rocky Top 100 more times.
- 34:58You know not. Really just.
- 34:59Well, as we're about, oh, sorry, Todd, about 3 weeks away from
- 35:03the portal opening up Asta, all of our hockey, I guess this
- 35:08week. What do you anticipate?
- 35:09What position groups do you think Iowa football is going to
- 35:12be targeting? A good question.
- 35:16I think some of it will depend on if guys hit the portal now.
- 35:19I asked Kirk on Sunday when they did the full announcement thing.
- 35:22I said you're going to have full roster and he was like, yeah, I
- 35:26anticipate it and I think everybody's going to play.
- 35:28I think that the new date for the portal opening probably
- 35:33helps Iowa a little bit because I'm sure there's going to be
- 35:36some guys going in into the portal.
- 35:39I would expect defensive tackle to be a position of need.
- 35:43I'd say maybe defensive backfield, they they might do a
- 35:47little looking there. Tyler Barnes even mentioned like
- 35:50defensive end wide receiver. You know, as as long as they
- 35:54keep both Hank Brown and Eklinski, I think they'll be OK
- 36:00at quarterback. And because I don't interpret
- 36:02Jimmy Sullivan leaving, I don't know that they'll have to invest
- 36:07a lot of resources into the quarterback position.
- 36:11So perhaps they can go a little more big game hunting and get a
- 36:14higher level wide receiver, but I think they probably have to
- 36:18overpay to get a wide receiver. It's just how it is.
- 36:23Tom, my last thing we we heard earlier in the week that that
- 36:26Hank Brown's actually, you know, off to a pretty good start in
- 36:29the bowl prep, but Kalinsky may be not able to to practice at
- 36:32some point and maybe Brown's getting a little bit more, more
- 36:35reps, whatever they're going through right now.
- 36:37Are you hearing that at all, Tom?
- 36:39Yeah, Hank's, Hank's done well. And and and Tim Lester has
- 36:44always said those two are really, really tight with each
- 36:47other. And it was just that that that
- 36:49one bye week where where where Hecklinski just kind of went
- 36:56nuts. He just caught on fire.
- 36:59And so they just kind of kept him in that number two spot.
- 37:03You wonder how life might have looked different had had Hank
- 37:07Brown completed that screen pass to Kamari Molson.
- 37:10I mean, it's the play that that could have changed the
- 37:13trajectory of the entire college football season.
- 37:16Really is. Like Tim, like Tim Lester said,
- 37:19he goes, he goes, I didn't look at the all 20 twos and and he
- 37:22would have scored a touchdown on that play if it was on target.
- 37:25And and then maybe they beat Indiana and maybe that upsets
- 37:29the apple cart. I mean, just think about all
- 37:32those things. Mendoza maybe doesn't win the
- 37:33Heisman. It's so wild how one play can
- 37:37change the trajectory of of an entire season.
- 37:40Yeah, and he would have had a couple of big old offensive
- 37:43lineman in front of him too. That play was absolutely there.
- 37:47Tom Kaikert hawkeyereport.com part of On Three Media.
- 37:49Tom, as always, thanks for what you do for us.
- 37:52Appreciate it. We will run you down next week.
- 37:54Tom. Thank you.

- 39:16variety has so many different ways.
- 39:18And good to see you. How are you?
- 39:20I'm great. Thank you.
- 39:21Well, let's get into what how you see the impact and how
- 39:25Variety Club has helped you guys at Mary Greeley.
- 39:27Where do you want to start? There's so many ways you can go.
- 39:30I know so many, probably focusing on the Compassion Fund
- 39:34itself really allows us to support our families while
- 39:39either in the hospital or you know, those first few days out
- 39:42of the hospital. It just helps take take the
- 39:46stressful, stressful part when parents need some support and
- 39:50we're able to help them financially with that, whether
- 39:53it's a car seat or a pack and play for a safe sleep, some gas
- 39:58money, if they need to travel to Des Moines or Iowa City for a
- 40:02higher level of care for their babies.
- 40:04All of those things help support our families and we're very
- 40:07appreciative. Stacey, you mentioned there's a
- 40:10few of those personal stories. Can you have one of those?
- 40:12I think they're just so impactful when you find out
- 40:14about those real stories. Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:17So one of them that comes to mind was actually on our
- 40:19pediatric unit, Mary Greeley. It was a patient there that we
- 40:24saw, you know, a couple times throughout the year and she was
- 40:27there for her 1st birthday. Unfortunately, she didn't have a
- 40:30lot of family there with her. And so with the support of the
- 40:34Compassion Fund, the nurses were able to get her some things for
- 40:39her 1st birthday, some necessities, but also some toys.
- 40:42And then we also threw her her first birthday party in her room
- 40:46at the hospital. Still kind of gives me chills,
- 40:48but what a special moment to be able to support that family.
- 40:52Yeah, it gives me chills. It's first I've heard of it.
- 40:54It's just fascinating what they do and how needy and how
- 40:57impactful that it is. We are running out.
- 41:00We got 30 seconds left. You take the floor.
- 41:02What do you want to make sure people know as the music is
- 41:04playing? Yeah, just that the variety does
- 41:07so much for children across Iowa and and we couldn't be grateful.
- 41:12Truly. They touched so many lives and
- 41:14it's so impactful. 100,000 children each and every year.
