- 0:00Every time we do something say something or think something?
- 0:03We are taking energy from our personal field and projecting it
- 0:07out into the world and it needs a vibrational traits in our
- 0:12field. And so every time we speak act
- 0:15or think we manifest the energy, we manifest we put it out into
- 0:19the world and the only way it becomes der virtue is if it is
- 0:25Guided by wisdom and prompted by compassion Dow.

- 1:00In the process, he captured the hearts of the community and
- 1:03showed us even the most unlikely as possible.
- 1:08His story is not dissimilar to those of the individuals
- 1:11interviewed on this podcast. At some point.

- 2:11And then studying in California, his early life was influenced by
- 2:14the free-spirited recreational drug culture of the day.
- 2:17While listening to the introductory University lecturer
- 2:20in Chinese history, that would shape the direction of his life
- 2:23and life's work. Daniel, was tripping on LSD
- 2:26after earning a master's degree. Degree in Chinese language in
- 2:30Civilization. He moved to Taiwan, and spend
- 2:32the next 16 years luxuriating, in the culture of ancient

- 2:46topics. And we leap into several of them

- 3:16Well earned please enjoy this episode of Salish Walt what
- 3:21Daniel Reed. Daniel, welcome to Salish wolf,
- 3:33thank you, glad to be here. I am so glad to have you here
- 3:37and I just want to start by way of introduction and letting you
- 3:42know, how much you have impacted my life and career.
- 3:46There were basically as I can, recall three bucks.
- 3:50And my formative years, that probably led me into natural
- 3:52medicine. One was spontaneous healing by
- 3:55Andrew while one was a diet for a new America by John Robbins.
- 4:01Yeah, and one was the DOW of Health sex and Longevity by you.
- 4:06Well, got to put to hear. Every that's the one that always
- 4:09gets people. So I've got to just thank you so
- 4:14much for that impact and what it has had on my life and for you.
- 4:19Now, this is 20 plus years later for me getting able to sit down
- 4:24and talk to you. It's such a privilege for me, so
- 4:26thank you. Thank you.
- 4:30Now, I want to know what all I've got.
- 4:32So many questions, so I'll try to pick a starting point, but
- 4:37let's start with a dow here. I want to know how the one led
- 4:42to led, the three led to 10,000 things and then how you arced
- 4:47back to the Dell. So, just by way of a starting
- 4:51point, why don't you talk about that turning point for you?
- 4:56When you started to return to the 1 or the Well.
- 5:04Started when I was in Berkeley. Starting my senior year, I
- 5:10hadn't declared a major. And I talked about this in the
- 5:15second chapter of the, first volume of my Memoir.
- 5:20And I went to a lecture that I had to go to to join that course
- 5:27for for a credit requirement. Well anyway, it was a famous
- 5:35Professor. I didn't know anything about
- 5:37China. But I went to that course and
- 5:40that day I was sailing on LSD, actually, I was the wild hippie
- 5:48hood and that 90-minute talk. And the way he talked about
- 5:54China, he was one of these, China friction itself, either
- 5:57the very famous percept, Professor.
- 5:59And he didn't want anyone to take the course who wasn't
- 6:02interested. So that's why we had to go to
- 6:04it. So basically, he told me all
- 6:07about China and 90 minutes 5,000 years of history.
- 6:10And of course, the Dow came into it.
- 6:13And I basically felt that I knew all this.
- 6:18From whenever past life, whatever.
- 6:23So I I took an individual major and East Asian studies and
- 6:28started studying Chinese thing. And then after I graduated, I
- 6:32went down to a school in Monterey to, to learn the
- 6:37language, got a master's degree in Chinese and then I went to
- 6:41Taiwan and you grew up in East Africa.
- 6:46Is that correct? Yeah.
- 6:50How did that come about? Well, I was born in 1948.
- 6:56My mother was a German war bride.
- 6:59And so when my father came back with her and we were born, he
- 7:05was working for a trans World Airlines, which no longer
- 7:08exists, actually and the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie
- 7:14wanted a an airline so, he contracted Six or seven people
- 7:25from TWA to come and set it up for him and very few people
- 7:28wanted to go at the end of the war, everyone else to stay home
- 7:32in America and all that. But my dad took it And you again
- 7:36drugs, come into it, they found themselves with six dc-3s.
- 7:44That was no sheets in them. And of course, their mission was
- 7:50to fly cut. What is that?
- 7:53Khht. Cut is a plant.
- 7:57It's got little berries on it for chewing and I mean,
- 8:02everybody in the Yemen is hooked on it.
- 8:05So it grows only in Ethiopia and it has to be taken Fresh.
- 8:09So they were setting it down on donkeys.
- 8:12Caravans and they were falling. They were written dropping off
- 8:15the mountain and everything, so they a wanting to deliver the
- 8:18stuff by air. And make more money and they say
- 8:21he told the crew, the the team from America.
- 8:25That as soon as we are only enough money, then we'll buy
- 8:28bigger planes and we'll do a passenger airline.
- 8:32So that happened a couple of years later, they start doing
- 8:35passenger service. It's one of the best airlines in
- 8:37the world maps. So we lived there for about 10
- 8:40years, and from there you ended up in Berkeley.
- 8:44Yeah. Well, we yeah, we moved to New
- 8:47York for high school and then Kelly.
- 8:50Barney. I went to two.
- 8:52I went to Columbia for a year and then transferred to
- 8:55Berkeley. And after getting your degree in
- 8:59East Asian languages and going to Taiwan, what was that
- 9:03experience? Like for you?
- 9:05Well, you know, do arrive there and speaking fluent Chinese, and
- 9:10To be able to spout, Chinese poetry, I felt again very much
- 9:15at home to be in that culture and of course, Taiwan is the
- 9:19traditional culture. I'd really tried to go to China.
- 9:22I didn't realize it, but the cultural revolution was in full
- 9:26swing and they weren't allowing anybody.
- 9:30So yeah, beautiful Chinese women and friends and everything.
- 9:38While I was there in within the first two years, I met people
- 9:42who are involved in T-Bone and traditional Chinese medicine and
- 9:49so I started when I was first working in the hotel business
- 9:54but I just, you know, I just didn't shoot me, I didn't like
- 9:58schedules and all that. So, I quit and The couple of
- 10:07editors from Hong Kong show that they were referred to me because
- 10:12they wanted to do a book on nightlife in Taipei and their,
- 10:16everyone told them that I was a guy who's she, I was staying
- 10:20home, flat broke. And they said, we want to a
- 10:24chapter on nightlife in Taipei for East Asia Guy.
- 10:29I did that. I said, I am not a writer and
- 10:31they said, well, you got a degree and I said, yes, you did.
- 10:34Everything, a term paper. I said yes.
- 10:38And the guys that you can write and I really needed the money.
- 10:42Everything 500 dollar payment, which is a fortune today, gave
- 10:46me 10 days, I wrote it, they liked it.
- 10:48They went back to Hong Kong and told everybody, they the Buddy
- 10:51in Taiwan writing now it's Taiwan was picking up in the
- 10:56tourism business. And so I started out as a
- 10:59freelance travel writer and you stayed in Taiwan for quite some
- 11:03time, didn't you? Yeah.
- 11:05I was there for 16 years, was that the intention when you went
- 11:09there or you just went with a open-ended ticket?
- 11:11And an open mind? Yeah, I had a one-way ticket and
- 11:17had no plan. I didn't think I'd stay there
- 11:20that long. Long but I just loved it so
- 11:22good. What was something that impacted
- 11:26you? Most about the culture there?
- 11:31Well, you, you know, I consider myself a scholar, I always
- 11:41studied things, I like. And so, I had a lot of
- 11:43background in Chinese culture, and civilization, and it seemed
- 11:49that every time, Regardless of which aspected Chinese
- 11:54civilization it was and in Taiwan of which traditional the
- 11:58food, the sex, the chi gong. It all came back to the Dow, the
- 12:08way, the way of everything, and it applies to every aspect and
- 12:13you know, Chinese civilization, go to 5,000 years.
- 12:17And so they just apply the basic principle unit Yang the five
- 12:20elements. The balancing Harmony.
- 12:26It was there in everything cooking.
- 12:28I love to cook and you know the flavors that the Five Element
- 12:36Elemental energies, then they have the five flavors and that's
- 12:40used in producing a good dish yin and yang acid and alkaline
- 12:47came into it, as medicine. And so, once I became a
- 12:52freelance writer, I just kept getting assignment.
- 12:56So like my first book on Chinese herbal medicine, got a friend of
- 13:02mine, who was a Chinese doctor there we helping you the
- 13:05research and I wrote that book and I got a cookbook. and every
- 13:09time, I got an assignment to do a book on some aspect of Chinese
- 13:15culture, also the art collection, and the National
- 13:18Palace Museum. The same principles came
- 13:21through. So that's how it all kind of
- 13:24boiled back down that one word doubt.
- 13:30Did you have any formal education in traditional Chinese
- 13:33medicine? Because you wrote about three
- 13:36books at least. One more than that, more than
- 13:40okay. Quite a few of that.
- 13:43No, I never went to any school. I didn't go to because I didn't
- 13:49think I want to be a Chinese doctor.
- 13:51I wasn't planning to Ichigo master, we're going to
- 13:58meditation in the temple is something.
- 14:01So I just educated Myself by doing the research, my book,
- 14:06it's incredible. Their wonderful books.
- 14:10Very brilliant resources. And one thing I love about all
- 14:16your books is, they are so easy to digest.
- 14:19They're, they're written in a way that although you're talking
- 14:22in some cases about very esoteric Concepts.
- 14:26I find it's easy for the reader to be able to absorb that.
- 14:29Yeah, that's what most of the reviewers say to is that your
- 14:34the very difficult subject that I've read about for, I can't
- 14:38understand what they're talking about.
- 14:39But my books it makes sense to So I seem to have a knack for
- 14:45that. And when you talk about the Dow,
- 14:48of course you and I are familiar with that, but can you give a
- 14:51bit of a glimpse for listeners? Who may not be familiar?
- 14:55What with what the Dow is? And if you can also kind of
- 15:00share how that has influenced your life, Well okay.
- 15:07We start with the word down. It simply means the way it can
- 15:14mean a path. It can also mean to speak or to
- 15:18know But the original ideogram indicates a the word way and in
- 15:28the daodejing the classic that the old ancient Sage called
- 15:32louder. Oh, he's you talked about the
- 15:34Dow or he you talk about something that can't be talked
- 15:38about. The way which can be spoken is
- 15:43not the real way and he's an Indian didn't even know what to
- 15:47call it. So he said so as it could have a
- 15:50nickname You take the word doubt, way because it explains
- 15:56how everything works, and it's also the source.
- 16:01Original source. So what other civilizations
- 16:06might call God or grandma or Enlightenment or whatever they
- 16:13didn't Darwinism with the talking about the same thing,
- 16:16the saying, the source of everything, which then manifests
- 16:21in a certain way and then creates the 10,000 Things so,
- 16:27that made a lot of sense to me and sort of like, There was
- 16:34nothing, there was this infinite potential and then there was the
- 16:38Big Bang. And the Big Bang is infinite
- 16:43potential, which is basically awareness.
- 16:48Manifested its life. In.
- 16:54And then sort of refracted into the five Elemental energies or
- 16:58five rays of color. And from those five energies,
- 17:04interacting and all the Myriad things came into creation.
- 17:11What we see is formed. I mean, end of this.
- 17:14Also comes from Buddhist Buddhist teachings and I I
- 17:19follow a path called The Junction kitchen.
- 17:27Of course they talked about emptiness and there's no such
- 17:30thing as form and what we see as Foreman's just because of our
- 17:35eyes and our five senses are too crude to see that where they
- 17:39really is just a bunch of energy flowing around in certain
- 17:42patterns to frequency. And the way is the way light and
- 17:51deprive rays of color from Life, interact to produce what we call
- 17:56forms. When we touch with our hands, it
- 17:59seems solid, but it's not any quantum physics verifies that
- 18:05You can go inside the atom and atom which is supposedly the
- 18:09building blocks with bricks and mortar.
- 18:12And actually then you have subatomic particles and you can
- 18:15keep looking closer and closer and suddenly they just disappear
- 18:19and there's wait wave energy. Which is the essential.
- 18:25In with that energy that in part is how we are all connected.
- 18:30How we are all one. How we are?
- 18:33All the Dow. Is that correct?
- 18:36Right, because on the energetic level, everything is just one
- 18:41big soup or ocean. But you can say in ocean has
- 18:50infinite drop of water in it and each each one has Own particular
- 18:57utility and nature, so, but everything is connected.
- 19:01Only in when you illusion that things are have solidity.
- 19:06Informed. We say, okay, well this is
- 19:08separate and that's how we get the idea that well, I am looking
- 19:13at that outside and it separates for me.
- 19:17But in fact it's not you are actually projecting the image of
- 19:21that from your own mind. It's real nature.
- 19:24Is this energy and life. With Chinese medicine, the
- 19:30philosophy in taoism, we are each of us is born with a
- 19:34Destiny and inherited Destiny. And as we are born and go
- 19:41through life, we tend to as I call it Arc away from that, we
- 19:47start to develop habituated patterns in order to avoid Pain
- 19:52and Gain pleasure. And that some individuals You
- 19:58are able to reconnect with a dow reconnect with the one and often
- 20:04that's through a crisis or some sort of turning point in life.
- 20:08Did you have any sort of event crisis turning point that
- 20:14reconnected you on that path with a dow?
- 20:16Or did you never really deviate from it in the first place?
- 20:20Oh, I've done plenty of deviations.
- 20:25I'm not surprised. My Level I would, you know, I
- 20:28don't consider myself and then light mask at all.
- 20:32I have a lot of knowledge. I consider myself a scholar. and
- 20:36a building of these thing, and I'm quite serious, about it, the
- 20:42dial and it's auction teachings, which related to that and
- 20:46Buddhism and it all goes back to the source, you know, where we
- 20:52all came from. And what we're doing here.
- 20:55And when you talk about Destiny, That's a hard one to say.
- 21:02Well where do you get the destiny?
- 21:04I think it has to do with with karmic traces in your field.
- 21:13Essentially. Each person is maybe you want to
- 21:17call it, a drop of spirit of the great spirit or you can call it
- 21:22the soul. I call it the field.
- 21:28Our real Essence, the true nature, which is basically a
- 21:30field of energy and light. That's shining as luminous, the
- 21:34Luminosity is awareness and the energy is comes from that light
- 21:42and that's how we function And so we come into the world as
- 21:47human being. In this particular universe. and
- 21:55we got we are born and we go through life and every time you
- 22:01Do something and action. Or say something.
- 22:07For think those are the only those are the three gates of
- 22:11energy. We have is energy.
- 22:12And how are we going to interact with the world?
- 22:14But other people do things build.
- 22:16Things write a book, cook a meal, go to a demonstration and
- 22:21throw rocks at the police, whatever you are using your
- 22:27energy. To impact the world and other
- 22:31people. Then we do something.
- 22:33Say something or think something we are taking energy from our
- 22:39personal field and projecting it out into the world and it needs
- 22:43a vibrational traits in our field.
- 22:49So it really depends on the intent.
- 22:53If you're doing something or saying something or thinking
- 22:55something positive to be helpful for someone that's called quote
- 23:00good karma, karma just means action.
- 23:04And if you do something harmful or you have an intention to do
- 23:07harm, then you are going to even negative traits.
- 23:11And so it's the net accumulation of these traces in our field of
- 23:17things. We've done that determines.
- 23:22Where you going next after you die?
- 23:25Which is the whole idea of continually going through
- 23:29endless numbers of lives until you sort of transcend, your
- 23:34karmic record and get to a level where you don't need to have
- 23:41this training anymore. What we call Life, you've
- 23:44learned your lessons and you can start going to the higher levels
- 23:48higher Dimensions, which don't involve physical.
- 23:52And is that what we would call Sage?
- 23:54Or is that even higher than a sage?
- 23:58I saved you the person on the path, you know, life.
- 24:07I would say more like you know they called the theft but
- 24:09Enlightenment or realization I think realization is better
- 24:13because it's realizing your true nature.
- 24:20And, like I said, it's you three things essential Emptiness.
- 24:24Formlessness is the wisdom there, and the nature of the
- 24:30light, the Luminosity of awareness is unconditional love
- 24:35compassion. That's not a goody two-shoes
- 24:39interpretation. It's just the nature.
- 24:42Of of awareness. Create the stories have the
- 24:47light, creates it creates with unconditional love and so we
- 24:50have to realize that. And then the third thing is that
- 24:54we have besides essential emptiness.
- 24:57From which you can Harvest wisdom because it's going Beyond
- 25:03knowledge. Knowledge in the world tells
- 25:05you. Yeah there's all these forms and
- 25:07you can have knowledge about many things but that's illusory.
- 25:10The only true knowledge or wisdom is that that there is
- 25:14nothing that's lasting. And so and so anyway with with
- 25:19awareness, yes the light Equals love.
- 25:27Unconditional love, not romantic, love and there.
- 25:31We have our energy which would project and that's power.
- 25:35When it's used properly, it's powerful.
- 25:37Its you can use its creative. You can create things.
- 25:42A practitioner. Whether it be of the Dow or
- 25:48Buddhism or the Hindu teaching, as long as they're all on the
- 25:52same page of what they're doing. By being in this world, we are
- 26:00on the path is on the path to realization of what our true
- 26:03nature is. And then transcending the need
- 26:06to come back in a physical body. Now, the daodejing talks a lot
- 26:12about knowledge and wisdom and I find not always in the most
- 26:16positive light allowed to sometimes talks about the, the
- 26:21danger of knowledge and wisdom. Yeah, he doesn't talk about
- 26:24Danger. The danger of knowledge.
- 26:27Okay. What does he mean by that?
- 26:31Well. the more things, you know, and do in the world of form And
- 26:43emotion and desire and all that, the more trouble you get
- 26:47injured. You have a lot of things to say
- 26:51about rulers. She said well you know the more
- 26:53laws you make the more people are going to break a lot.
- 26:57The more restrictions there are and he's basically tells people.
- 27:00One of the My Favorite Things is fill their bellies and empty
- 27:03their mind. Because the mind is not the
- 27:07spirit, the mind is the ego. It's when you're born here, we
- 27:11all have to have an identity, we call it the ego.
- 27:16I like the Chinese word, the Chinese world is showa, little
- 27:20little me and your spirit is dawa, big me.
- 27:25And so little me is running around the world doing all that
- 27:28getting in trouble and the more today.
- 27:31It's so perfect lousy would going nuts today.
- 27:37Advertisements TV, social media, Facebook.
- 27:43All this stuff, just a continuous barrage of bits of
- 27:50useless information. And it fills our mind and
- 27:55distracts us from what what we really are and leads us astray
- 28:01and you people don't work out of wisdom.
- 28:04Compassion and power, and the egos in the driver's seat and so
- 28:11it's greed. Anger ignorance running rampant,
- 28:17look at the world today. What is the Dow have to teach us
- 28:22right now in the world where we are being rolled?
- 28:27Perhaps more tightly than ever before there?
- 28:31What can we find in the dowel to help us through this part in the
- 28:34way? The one and only way the real
- 28:38way? And then say well what's that
- 28:39mean? Well the reflection of the way
- 28:43in this world. Is nature.
- 28:48Nature, the way the trees grow, the way, the weather works, then
- 28:52we messed it up so much with chemicals and electromagnetic
- 28:58radiation. All the ignorance and violence
- 29:02in the world. But if you want to go back with
- 29:05the Dow would say is return to the way return to the source.
- 29:10And in this particular World in this particular solar system in
- 29:14this particular Universe the way the Away.
- 29:18The infinite way is reflected in the way, nature works when left
- 29:25alone. So Rick a traditional Chinese
- 29:29medicine. What's the medicine plans?
- 29:33Minerals. Not cult are, you know, the
- 29:38byproducts is many Pharma drugs, which the oil industry is sold
- 29:44to the pharmaceutical industry, waste product, hazardous waste,
- 29:48and they Jiggle It Around in the lab and make drugs from it,
- 29:53especially drugs for the nervous system.
- 29:54The toxins. And so they affect your, how
- 29:58your nerves work, but they do a lot of damage.
- 30:00So the Chinese medicine because originally did all came from the
- 30:04Dow, the Chinese culture. So they you had these sages
- 30:09running around up in the mountains, they were Hermits.
- 30:14Looking for plants that would confer longevity.
- 30:19And so they tried them all and none of them work that way, but
- 30:22then I found out how they do work.
- 30:23Oh, I hate know, I don't know. I couldn't have a problem with
- 30:26my bow and I was fixed. So that's how these these 20,000
- 30:33plant medicine, Chinese medicine of which maybe 2,000 common
- 30:37huge, how their functions were all figured out.
- 30:40And what do you think combination?
- 30:42And so the same goes for everything eating well, hot
- 30:44watch what, how an animal eat. Watch the diet of a chimpanzee
- 30:50if you want to see how a human. Would do besties.
- 30:55You said I think leave nature alone.
- 31:00Yeah. And follow nature follow nature
- 31:03and I feel like we've become so disconnected because we don't
- 31:08by, and large consider ourselves to be nature, but we are.
- 31:13We're part of Nature and I feel like we've created so many
- 31:18trillions of interventions and our lives that were completely.
- 31:23Enacted. Yeah, the Western idea because a
- 31:27lot of this problem comes from Western civilization and I mean
- 31:31also in the East, but if you go back to the original way,
- 31:35civilizations arose is, isn't the whole essence of Western
- 31:40Civilization to conquer nature. Congra nature.
- 31:45You know, we'll get by all these things.
- 31:47Will go find a shortcut and all that, but all you do is go
- 31:50against nature. And then you have problems with
- 31:53your health, you have problems with your mind.
- 31:55What you're thinking And it just doesn't work and we can see that
- 32:02now. Yeah.
- 32:05We're even trying to do it with this whole so-called climate
- 32:09crisis because the climate's always changing whether we're
- 32:12here or not. Yeah about climate crisis
- 32:17comments from me. Yes please do nothing to do with
- 32:23smokestack industry and too many cars that causes the air
- 32:27pollution. That's bad for you, but that has
- 32:30nothing to do with the climate. That's nonsense was happening.
- 32:34You're going to climb it on. This planet is controlled by the
- 32:37Sun. And the sun has gone into
- 32:40remission. I forgot how many every how many
- 32:44thousands of years were in a cycle of remission?
- 32:46The Senate is cooling off. We're going into into a mini ice
- 32:52age. Not global warming.
- 32:55No, well, they've stopped using that term because it didn't fit
- 32:57the narrative very well, right? But I agree with you completely
- 33:01Daniel and I actually just interviewed someone for my other
- 33:03podcast the other day, who's an environmentalist and we got into
- 33:07this. And she actually said something
- 33:09that really resonated with me and that so-called climate
- 33:13change is, it's not actually a problem because the climate is
- 33:16going to change, it's always changing.
- 33:18It's just that humans don't like the impact that it might have
- 33:23on. Us and thus we're trying to
- 33:26control it. Yeah, of course, there's money
- 33:30to be made. And yet we're spending money.
- 33:34I find on, I would call it bogus governmental initiatives to look
- 33:40like they're doing something for the climate for the environment
- 33:44but they're not spending any money on cleaning up the
- 33:46environment. No, no, of course not because
- 33:49then it is no money debate. Now you got to spend money to do
- 33:51that. Now, I mean, look at the fossil
- 33:54fuel industry part of this whole global warming thing.
- 33:58Is this a you look? We're burning too, many fossil
- 34:01fuels. We got to get, we got at.
- 34:02So we're going to get more expensive and we're running out.
- 34:07And so it's another way to make money Cole to all of that stuff.
- 34:12But You Don't See Much investment be putting into into
- 34:20non-polluting energy system and I think that some have been
- 34:29invented and suppress Nikola Tesla.
- 34:35It was brilliant and he had a, he had advice for converting
- 34:41incoming energy from the Sun and the Stars into electricity.
- 34:46I don't know what happened to that, basically free energy, but
- 34:49there's no money to me to be made by that.
- 34:51And the other thing is consumption.
- 34:53Do we need so many cars doing? Do we need so many appliances,
- 34:59it's just the more people consume, the more, the suppliers
- 35:03make Spent most of it is useless stuff.
- 35:06This is what lousy was talking about you is the more things you
- 35:10have around the more people go let you go wrong and do harm to
- 35:15the environment and to themselves.
- 35:17So they just talked about, going back to a simple basic lifestyle
- 35:22with the daodejing. We always talk about the Dow.
- 35:28I find there's very little talk about the day.
- 35:31Can you speak of what the day is?
- 35:33And the Dao de Jing the day? Yes, Like play?
- 35:39No, no, like the Dao de Jing. So 0 Delta, G 0.
- 35:46So I know it's the day, the day or the day.
- 35:48However, it's duh, the Dell do that.
- 35:59Yes, I always wondered about that too.
- 36:02And then my favorite translator of The daodejing and Chinese
- 36:08poetry Arthur Waley. Okay, with an English.
- 36:11We never went to China. Yeah, he taught himself Chinese.
- 36:18In the British museum during WWII, he was assigned to the
- 36:22print collection. that the Chinese print collection and you
- 36:27sitting there all day, you know, bombs going off in the air and
- 36:33and nothing to do and then he had to go.
- 36:35How am I going to organize these Trends?
- 36:37So he found a dictionary there also in the book collection and
- 36:41he taught himself classical Chinese.
- 36:44That's incredible. And they can transfer the
- 36:48incredible. Okay, so you have the daodejing
- 36:51and the title of his book is the way and its power.
- 36:58Very interesting. So you look at that word doll.
- 37:02I already told you means past or way.
- 37:06Okay, now Derbies power but in the sense in the English word
- 37:11power, you know, electric power, you know, and atomic bomb.
- 37:16There's a word in English that fits it perfect which is virtue.
- 37:20Yes, the word virtue means power originally and but it means good
- 37:25power you your A good way. So you have virtue.
- 37:30So the down down, Jim. It's it's Jane is a classic text
- 37:38classic book about the virtue of the way.
- 37:43IE the power. and the power of, basically, being the power of
- 37:48creation, To create something new from the Basic Energy.
- 37:55And when you speak of a virtue, can you elaborate a bit on that
- 37:59that term? And that the implications
- 38:04remember, I talked about, okay? This is something almost
- 38:07everyone with any interest in this stuff Eastern thinking,
- 38:10know, is we talk about emptiness, which is basically
- 38:13lack of form. Took no substance light.
- 38:20Luminosity and energy. Okay.
- 38:26And in the Dowd in the doll is the same thing.
- 38:30So from those three aspects of our true nature we Harvest.
- 38:39We when we put it into action into words into thinking from
- 38:45the essential emptiness of knowing that everything is
- 38:48impermanent everything that we see around us and okay, we gain
- 38:51wisdom and from the light of awareness Nature of that is
- 38:57compassion. Unconditional love, and with
- 39:01energy, properly used with wisdom and compassion the energy
- 39:06to becomes virtue power. To do good.
- 39:13To heal. To help.
- 39:17To repair things to make things better.
- 39:20So power can be abused, or it can be used properly.
- 39:25Can only be used properly? From when it's motivated by
- 39:31compassion. And when it draws on wisdom,
- 39:34when you start using knowledge, you make an atomic bomb physics.
- 39:40Atomic science, you make a bomb, you can kill people or you make
- 39:45the electrical power system grid that ruins people's healthy or
- 39:52you make 5G. And ruin everybody's brain and
- 39:56cut cause cancer. So that's when you work from
- 40:01knowledge. Power becomes destructive.
- 40:07When you work from wisdom, power becomes virtue.
- 40:11It's put to good use. And it can only be prompted by
- 40:15compassion, not by greed. Or anger.
- 40:21So it all fits, it's very simple.
- 40:24That's another thing about that. It's one word, one syllable.
- 40:31And yet, it's all there. Would you say that knowledge is
- 40:36the language of the Mind? Whereas wisdom is the language
- 40:40of the heart. Yeah, that's exactly precisely.
- 40:45I wanted to say mind, we're talking about the human mind.
- 40:48Yes, the ego ego? That's correct.
- 40:52Knowledge. And so the ego and what is it
- 40:55that you call that the shower? Charles War shall War.
- 41:00Yes, that's perfect. I love that.
- 41:05Privacy and of course, big me which doesn't care how many
- 41:10millions of lives you have. Before you wake up to sits back
- 41:16and says, alright when you're ready fine but it that's that is
- 41:21you big. Me is the essential you and I
- 41:24suppose. Yes, suffering is generally.
- 41:29The path that gets people to wake up and just brings in the
- 41:33Buddha, the four noble truths. I mean, there's no, there's no
- 41:38conflict between Buddhism and Taoism, the talking about the
- 41:42same thing, it's just a different culture and a
- 41:44different aspect, but the good has first teaching, the Four
- 41:49Noble Truths, the nature of life is suffering.
- 41:55You're alive. You got a moment, you're going
- 41:57to suffer. So okay.
- 41:59Well then the 20, what's it called?
- 42:01That's the second one. The cause of suffering is desire
- 42:05acquisitiveness. Well, the third one then is,
- 42:08what's the solution the end of suffering?
- 42:11Is the end of Desire. Well then how do you overcome
- 42:17desire it so powerful where you follow the noble Eightfold Path,
- 42:22which is basically virtue, right?
- 42:25Right, action, right speech, right?
- 42:28Thought right livelihood, right? Meditation, those eight things,
- 42:33you follow that path to do it correctly and you overcome
- 42:36desire and you stop suffering. And you're ready to leave this
- 42:41cyclic existence, it's really like polishing yourself, like
- 42:45we're all diamond. You know, we're clear empty
- 42:51form, we put out light and all that but we've got all this
- 42:55grease and muck all over us. And so you go through life time
- 43:00of Lifetime and you just gained more and more of that.
- 43:03And until finally you start to Suffer enough that you decide
- 43:08something wrong and then if you're lucky, you find a teacher
- 43:13for teaching and then you start on the path.
- 43:16See, that's another interesting thing.
- 43:19And I would think that the Taoist Master would agree on
- 43:23this. In Buddhism.
- 43:25There are six Realms of cyclic existence the gods, the demigods
- 43:31humans animals, Hungry, Ghost and hell.
- 43:37And basically, when you die your crime account pops up and it's
- 43:42just that it's all vibration like attracts.
- 43:45Like, and there you go to that place.
- 43:47So they say that, you know, six different forms or worlds, or
- 43:53dimensions of existence, existence, you have a body of
- 43:56some sort, only, a human being, Has an opportunity to encounter
- 44:03the teaching of intruder Dow or Dharma if you're able is because
- 44:10we're sort of on the cusp there, between the demigods and then
- 44:13animals below has animals. Just go on Instinct, and never
- 44:16mind ghosts and Hell beings their lost billions of years.
- 44:21The demigods are too powerful to one of bother about teachings
- 44:26and the gods themselves also, but they all end up dead.
- 44:29Dying and dropping down to a lower level.
- 44:32But a human is on the cusp. They can either. follow the
- 44:37three poisons of Desire anger and ignorance or they can make
- 44:44the choice to follow the teacher or to seek a teacher or just
- 44:51teaching to to return to the source to return to their true
- 44:58nature and to get off this wheel to a to a higher level.
- 45:03You just said of the three poisons ignorance.
- 45:07We often think of the opposite of ignorance as knowledge.
- 45:10Yeah, but it's not wasted. It's wisdom.
- 45:13The most ignorant people in terms of spiritual work or no
- 45:18bail. Winning scientists because they
- 45:22think they know everything. They've got it all figured out
- 45:26and so they are almost totally impervious to something like the
- 45:31Dow. For the door, the Dharma or the
- 45:37light of great Perfection, as an adsorption teaching except for
- 45:41would argue, maybe Einstein. He seemed to know about energy.
- 45:46Yes. You get any talked about?
- 45:48Yes, it's true. And then some scientists do.
- 45:51But I'm just saying the more knowledge you have, you know,
- 45:54I've got four phds, I want to know Bells live in a big house,
- 46:01like a lot of money now and everything's fine.
- 46:04I've been honored by Society, what do you want to?
- 46:08Would you want to go meditate? You're not suffering anything,
- 46:13so knowledge can be the great impediment basically.
- 46:18According to the Buddha. Anyway, the thing that gets you
- 46:20on a path of suffering, but seems to be the crisis of
- 46:25existence that Gets people arcing back towards the path.
- 46:30Some sort of be it, a midlife crisis, or a loss of some sort,
- 46:34or some sort of trauma. And the universe is going to
- 46:39continue to put those opportunities in front of us
- 46:44into we choose to Arc back towards the Dow and you know,
- 46:49spring where you get always find out.
- 46:52If you trace it back, we just love to blame others.
- 46:56Yes. Then the government blame your
- 46:59wife blame, the dog, whatever. But we create our own suffering.
- 47:06What is the doll teach us about blaming and victimization.
- 47:11Without well, or any of the, the ancient Traditions, all of them
- 47:19you have these these propensities as a human being to
- 47:24do certain things and, you know, it's scientific Karma.
- 47:29Everyone thinks it's a Hindu religious concept.
- 47:32It's not, it's just a Hindi word for a universal principle action
- 47:37and reaction. You do something and there's a
- 47:40reaction. Push back.
- 47:44So in Buddhism and taoism basically when things go wrong
- 47:51the advice is to look, look look into yourself and see where you
- 47:55went wrong and then to change. People is another thing.
- 47:59People think. That the only thing they got to
- 48:03be careful about is what they do.
- 48:06Right? I don't want to break the law.
- 48:08I don't want to get busted little bit more restricted is
- 48:14what you say. Well you could you could say the
- 48:17wrong thing to the wrong person and get smacked in the face.
- 48:19But basically you can say anything you want.
- 48:21I got free speech. Used to have free speech Daniel
- 48:25and we used to have three speeds.
- 48:27Yes. Okay.
- 48:29And you know maybe you can you can yell at the kids and you can
- 48:32yell at your wife and all that But we are, well we can think
- 48:36anything, nobody knows what we're thinking that we can still
- 48:39do that, right? Humming.
- 48:41Don't people throw all kinds of poison out there against people,
- 48:46they don't like, well, it doesn't matter.
- 48:50Go back to what I said, before, real nature, as usual field of
- 48:55energy and light with sentient, we have awareness that's a
- 49:00global awareness glow. That casteneda the Don Juan He
- 49:05says an old books at least a thousand times awareness glows.
- 49:11Okay. So that's the Luminosity of our
- 49:13field is awareness and with our awareness and of course Lord,
- 49:20download a bit Consciousness human consciousness.
- 49:25The ego. And so everything we do say and
- 49:30think is simply, we are manifesting into the world, our
- 49:35energy. And it leaves.
- 49:39It needs a vibrational imprint. Energy, does that?
- 49:44It's a digital record. well, really, I think the things that
- 49:49people think are some of the most horrible of all.
- 49:53Probably you're very careful, you know, you do a lot of harm
- 49:58to people, but also you have to be careful not, you can say
- 50:00things. So you can think anything you
- 50:02want and turn that when the egos in control, it has all kinds of
- 50:07evil thoughts and he'll intent. But we think, oh, I see, nobody
- 50:13knows that. It's okay.
- 50:15But it's imprinted in your field.
- 50:17And that's that's all you have left.
- 50:19When you die you lose your body, you lose your ego.
- 50:24We don't go into the Bardo, the in-between stage between life
- 50:29and death, and the next life as John Smith or Daniel Reed.
- 50:35We just go as a field or are were stripped down into naked,
- 50:40awareness, naked, awareness with a field of energy and life in
- 50:44which is imprinted A Digital record of everything we ever
- 50:47done in other existences. That's what brings us back with
- 50:51all these various different propensity.
- 50:54And as you said, wisdom and compassion together, equal
- 50:57virtue. And if we're thinking, Lll
- 51:02things, we're putting out that energy.
- 51:05We're also not in a place of compassion and so it's
- 51:08impossible to be. Virtuous also is not wise
- 51:12because we forget that the bounces back on us, we have the
- 51:15knowledge, we think we can get away with it, right?
- 51:18And I think that seems to be where victimization it kind of
- 51:22comes from. And it's part of that, because
- 51:24the state of being a victim is not a state of compassion, it's
- 51:28a state of blaming, it's a state of not Reflecting internally,
- 51:33it's a state of doing whatever you can do to avoid that
- 51:36internal suffering and acting externally.
- 51:40Also mean, if you want to look at it victims of this becomes of
- 51:44that, essentially, the width will, why view is well, I
- 51:48deserve it, it's a bounce, back, something happened.
- 51:52I did something at some time. Either in this life or in a
- 51:55previous life how do you know? But in any How else does it
- 52:00explain? It's not random.
- 52:03You have some people had this endless.
- 52:05Good luck. Now the village in that endless
- 52:07bad luck, but it's not luck. I don't believe in wreck life is
- 52:12too intricate and complex to be a chat off-chance.
- 52:19Everything is interconnected and it's going along the way.
- 52:22It should go. And so if you are a victim of
- 52:27this or that or the other, you're just calling yourself a
- 52:30victim. That's the word saying someone
- 52:33else trying to hurt me but in fact you hurt yourself on some
- 52:36level at some point in time and you just, it's Just the bounce
- 52:40back the payoff. Another concept that find the
- 52:45Dow goes greatly into, is this concept of naming and by naming,
- 52:51we create distinction. And the more we named, the more
- 52:55we separate ourselves from each other.
- 52:58And from the one, what are your thoughts on that?
- 53:02Well, it's like dogs aren't having an ego.
- 53:06When you come in to manifest form in this world you need an
- 53:10identity. You can't just call yourself and
- 53:13field of light you can do that. That's why Dallas.
- 53:19And she would have been far mountains and living in tibetan
- 53:22Masters live in caves where you can actually see your real self.
- 53:27What you really are, but when you're interacting Society,
- 53:31you've got to have, you have to have a name, okay?
- 53:36And that's your human mind and all the Myriad things that have
- 53:43come into form and that we have also produced, I won't say
- 53:47create, you don't create anything, but we are produced
- 53:53Need names in order to deal with them.
- 53:56Confucius had something to say on this too.
- 54:02He said, it's very important to name things properly and today,
- 54:10with social media, and the government, all the propaganda
- 54:14and all that, you know, they give you the name, things to
- 54:18confuse, people, they call it medicine, it's poison.
- 54:23Are you a vaccine? You're going to cure, you could
- 54:25kill you. It's got the wrong name.
- 54:27If you really named it properly and told people what's in it?
- 54:31No, no one will go near it. So give it its real name.
- 54:38Confused to talk about that confusion is very much into the
- 54:41Dow. He went to visit loud.
- 54:44It's just that he had a different idea Confucius had
- 54:47great respect for Liza and all that but could use wasn't
- 54:50interested in meditation. And all that said he wanted to
- 54:55straighten out Society. You live in the time called the
- 54:58Warring States and all these little teams are fighting each
- 55:02other and he wanted to get The Kings to start ruling, according
- 55:08to the Dow. So that's why he was saying,
- 55:13name things naming things properly to reflect what they
- 55:16really are so that people can deal with them properly.
- 55:21And today that's not done. I mean propaganda and social
- 55:25media and announcements from government spokesman is all a
- 55:29bunch of lies because they misnamed thing.
- 55:33What do you think the impact is on us and having 100 different
- 55:37religions, countless races. 50 names for gender.
- 55:43How is that impacting humankind by doing all that naming and
- 55:47labeling confusion, causing the confusion and conflict versus
- 55:54confusion, or what's what? And then conflict not religion.
- 56:00There's a difference between religion and spirituality, the
- 56:05Latin word, I believe religion is to reunite.
- 56:08So that right there, the assumption is your Or a sinner,
- 56:12it doesn't matter. Which religion you go to Islam.
- 56:14Christianity Judaism, human beings are bad, born back.
- 56:21And so you need a religion to reconnect you with God.
- 56:30And you need to intermediary. So you need a cleric.
- 56:35You need Dogma you need doctrine, you need the Bible, or
- 56:40you need to holy book and also something in between
- 56:45spirituality, just really different.
- 56:48Everything has spirit. It couldn't exist as a came from
- 56:54Spirit from source. So we have a, like, you talked
- 56:59about my, The Head and the Heart in the heart, basically, light
- 57:04of spirit, which people, ignore and spirituality is simply
- 57:08Awakening. Awakening yourself to that
- 57:15aspect of yourself, which is eternal Immortal, that's the
- 57:21light of spirit, which has wisdom, compassion and Power.
- 57:28but everything else in the world naming names and having 100
- 57:33different gender titles test in the head, that's in the head and
- 57:38the more of that you have, the more confusion you have to push
- 57:40goes back to the daodejing and now there's that empty their
- 57:43heads until their bellies. Everybody wants to eat and needs
- 57:47to eat. But you don't need to think of
- 57:50so much, and you don't need all the names.
- 57:54I mean, why, why do you need a hundred different names for all
- 57:58these different genders and different mixes of how people
- 58:01like to get off on sex? Let's do it.
- 58:06You're still either born male or female and sex is a certain kind
- 58:11of energy. And that's, you know, it's
- 58:13nobody's business. How you manifested?
- 58:16You don't need a special bathroom for someone who has
- 58:19changed the gender for one to the other function.
- 58:24And a composite vision and conflict.
- 58:27Lots of says, it's important to know when to stop naming things.
- 58:32What does that mean? Well, I think you get to a
- 58:36certain point in practice. Practicing what with them,
- 58:44compassion and power as a Healer.
- 58:48Or martial artist. A meditator or whatever, and
- 58:54what you then going, you're going the other direction,
- 58:58you're moving back to Essence back to the Real.
- 59:02The true nature, your own true nature.
- 59:06The true nature of reality which goes all back to one thing the
- 59:11source And so are you saying, it's you need to stop naming so
- 59:18many things with different names, since they all have the
- 59:21essentially the same source, and the same nature if you want to
- 59:25live. A wise life with virtue.
- 59:32You want to keep avoid making too many distinctions between
- 59:37different things because then it gets into confusion and conflict
- 59:41people inside. One person sides with the word
- 59:45that says, Communism one with capitalism, and more and more
- 59:51conflict has caused more problems are created.
- 59:54And when you said stop name, So many things and empty the heads
- 1:00:00fill their bellies. You saying just get down to the
- 1:00:02basics. As long as we're alive, we got
- 1:00:04to have Chiller belly, but simplify simplify the human
- 1:00:09mind. So it doesn't get into the way
- 1:00:12of bigamy. So little me doesn't completely
- 1:00:15get distracted and from our real nature.
- 1:00:20So we are all one. We are all the same.
- 1:00:23We are certainly all connected and the more we named, the more
- 1:00:26distinctions we Give the more labels we give the further from
- 1:00:29that we move and an obvious solution is to stop.
- 1:00:34Looking at what separates us. Stop looking at what makes us
- 1:00:37different and start looking at what makes us the same exactly
- 1:00:42the common denominator that's it.
- 1:00:44There's only basically the awareness, the final common
- 1:00:48denominator is simply awareness. In this world as human beings.
- 1:00:53Well we've all got to sit, we are body, it doesn't matter.
- 1:00:56What color your skin is whether you're male or female or the
- 1:00:58body's function, basically works the same.
- 1:01:03You may have 200 different brands of cars with different
- 1:01:08shapes and sizes that the, basically, the motors were the
- 1:01:10same. So, with the wisdom and the
- 1:01:13compassion, we have the do the virtue.
- 1:01:16Yeah. And the only way we can have
- 1:01:18that is if we stop separating and start aligning and being
- 1:01:23one, basically, the thing about virtue power, put to proper use
- 1:01:32So what the daodejing is saying, what allows us saying and what
- 1:01:35whatever saying to is, we all have this basic essential
- 1:01:40energy, you got no energy, you're just a piece of wood or a
- 1:01:43rock. And so every time we speak act
- 1:01:46or think we manifest the energy, we manifest would put it out
- 1:01:51into the world. And the only way it becomes der
- 1:01:54virtue is if it is Guided by wisdom and prompted by
- 1:01:59compassion. And now if it's little me doing
- 1:02:03it, okay? It will be guided by knowledge
- 1:02:06and prompted by greed. You spoke earlier of Desire
- 1:02:14leads to suffering and the Eightfold Path to Virtue can
- 1:02:18help us to end desire. Taoism talks a lot about sex
- 1:02:24yeah how a desire play or not play into that role of sex and
- 1:02:31taoism like with everything else it's the way you go about it.
- 1:02:37There's nothing wrong with set and there's nothing wrong with
- 1:02:39enjoying SEC. Its attachment that causes
- 1:02:44problems, but sex itself, as a saying in the doll and also in
- 1:02:51the so-called tantric traditions of Buddhism, that were a tundra
- 1:02:56and tantric is misused, not only reason there is such a thing as
- 1:03:01applied to sex. But nevertheless, Sexual Energy
- 1:03:04is really powerful. I mean it is the most powerful
- 1:03:08energy because it's meant for procreation.
- 1:03:11So there's that drive. Now what's the dollar sex or
- 1:03:16tantric uses of sex between a male and a female involves
- 1:03:21harnessing that energy? I have three or four you read my
- 1:03:24book three or four chapters on? Male retention of semen during
- 1:03:33sex. Well, if you want to know about
- 1:03:36sex without desire as a motivator, try that the male and
- 1:03:40female are different. Now, for the female, the idea is
- 1:03:43to encourage orgasm, there's no loss to a woman, and her energy
- 1:03:50is incredibly powerful, far, more powerful than the male.
- 1:03:55And a man is basically dispensable.
- 1:03:58It's like You know the Black Widow eats her made after she's
- 1:04:01impregnated and the drawings are driven out of the hive and all
- 1:04:06that. So that kind of practice which
- 1:04:09is requires the mail too. To not go for the quick.
- 1:04:15Shot of Desire is a way of harnessing, a basic energy of
- 1:04:21life, to increase your own energy and your health.
- 1:04:25Now, there are occasions. I won't name names but Buddhist
- 1:04:32Tibetan Lamas where monks and monks have a vow of celibacy.
- 1:04:37But at a certain point in their lives, when they're in their
- 1:04:4080s, maybe 70s. It's determined by The Physician
- 1:04:46they need Sexual Energy and so this is kept quiet, quiet.
- 1:04:52Obviously, because of the way people look at that and so there
- 1:04:58will be a partner will be found for them for practicing sexual
- 1:05:03yoga. The contact with the female
- 1:05:08energy Sexual Energy in a way like just to recharge the
- 1:05:12battery. Food is not enough, herbs and
- 1:05:16tonics and not enough at a certain level.
- 1:05:18At some point, it's recharging the primordial battery.
- 1:05:24Is that the connection with someone else?
- 1:05:26Is that what the recharges? Well, it's sexualize.
- 1:05:30Yeah, it's a connection, it's physical, say, yes, but without
- 1:05:35it's done in a certain way, of course, in certain attitude, if
- 1:05:38it's done, right? It is not discomforted by saying
- 1:05:42or lecherous purposes which that happens to it as many scandals
- 1:05:47and going on forever with you, all of the sex and cult.
- 1:05:53But When done properly, the idea is to excite the female and to
- 1:06:00keep your not to lose your semen which for a male is very
- 1:06:04important, especially at that age and to get a recharge of the
- 1:06:09sexual energy to the two Fields essentially were few and it's a
- 1:06:15veggie is the most powerful energy there when it's
- 1:06:18manifested in the female orgasm. As long as a male doesn't
- 1:06:22ejaculate. His Is polarity remain.
- 1:06:27So the more female energy is radiated out from the woman who
- 1:06:33is experiencing multiple orgasms and the man keeps in his semen
- 1:06:40to the polarities the moment you ejaculate, you lose your
- 1:06:42polarity long as he keeps that polarity going that energy from
- 1:06:50the from the female it's like a magnet.
- 1:06:53It just gets drawn into the field of the man.
- 1:06:58We're not talking about something physical here.
- 1:07:01We're talking about on the energy level, but it works.
- 1:07:05It does work. As you said earlier, we are all
- 1:07:07Just Energy, there is no physical, that's right, that's
- 1:07:11right. Have you ever found yourself in
- 1:07:14a place where you've just said, I don't know how the fuck I got
- 1:07:17here, but if I follow the Dow, I'm going to get out or I'm
- 1:07:22going to get through it. All the time.
- 1:07:27Especially now I'm in a situation here where I think I
- 1:07:34made the wrong move coming here and leaving the place I was
- 1:07:37before in this particular time, especially now with the world
- 1:07:41situation is. So it's causing me some
- 1:07:44considerable suffering and I think all the time How did I get
- 1:07:50here? Why did I do this?
- 1:07:53And of course, the answer is you needed to, I guess and it's a
- 1:07:59hurdle that I have to cross. I've got the kitchen, so It is
- 1:08:10up to me. Yeah.
- 1:08:11So physically right now you're in a geographic location that is
- 1:08:14not as comforting to you as where you were right.
- 1:08:19I also not a citizen in this country and the time when
- 1:08:23visitors and visas are getting more problematic and you can't
- 1:08:27just hop on a plane and go somewhere else.
- 1:08:29It seemed like a good idea at the time but now it doesn't look
- 1:08:34that way and there are hurdles coming up, right?
- 1:08:38Can you say Where You Are? Daniel, I'm in Chiang Mai.
- 1:08:41Okay Thailand. And it's like my Thailand and we
- 1:08:45lived here before, but we came back.
- 1:08:47But again, you know, there is no hurdle that can't be crossed.
- 1:08:55If you know how to do it. Basically, I'm still pretty
- 1:08:59healthy and 72 years old now and I know what I'm doing, but
- 1:09:04there's a lot of obstacles here. I mean there's a lot of
- 1:09:08pollution got 5G Towers everywhere and other things.
- 1:09:14So maybe I had it too comfortable, right?
- 1:09:17Or How do you know this opportunity is right?
- 1:09:21For you it's because it's the opportunity that you're going
- 1:09:25through. That's what you're presented
- 1:09:26with. In that case, my wife more
- 1:09:30enlightened than me because she deserves such thinking about all
- 1:09:33this stuff. Here we are, which is be here
- 1:09:40sink or swim. I found if nothing else that has
- 1:09:46carried me through more in life, just that knowledge of knowing
- 1:09:49that every Occurrence, good or seemingly.
- 1:09:54Bad is an opportunity and it's part of our learning and it's
- 1:10:00presented to us with intention. Yeah.
- 1:10:06Yeah, but you know, when you read my Memoir eventually, okay?
- 1:10:13Just an incredibly colorful. I lots of fun and good luck were
- 1:10:19all the way down the line and it could be that you know that I've
- 1:10:25had great teachers and just maybe I haven't been working
- 1:10:30hard enough on that stuff and so the Dow turning the five
- 1:10:36elements and what's needed, what's needed just happens,
- 1:10:41especially if you're connected with that.
- 1:10:44If you're connected with the teaching, then the teachings
- 1:10:47will get just like a teacher and say well, how are you?
- 1:10:52You've been skipping class. Let's get to To work here.
- 1:10:57You've written a couple books on chi gong.
- 1:11:00Yeah. Is that a regular part of your
- 1:11:02life? Absolutely.
- 1:11:06There's two things that are regular part of my life always
- 1:11:11show. They had been seized not 1985,
- 1:11:15she gone. And what I call Kegel key, being
- 1:11:21a particular type of Chinese tea from Taiwan.
- 1:11:24I've written a book about it, called the art and Alchemy of
- 1:11:28Chinese to do. You know, this book, I've seen
- 1:11:31it, but I haven't read it. And we have a key website.
- 1:11:35So what is this tea? This tea is a kind of a oolong
- 1:11:41tea. There's three kinds of tea in
- 1:11:42Chinese cheaters. There's green tea.
- 1:11:46Yeah, this picked and dried and that just not oxidized commended
- 1:11:53And there's what we call black teeth.
- 1:11:56They call it red key fully fermented and then that's all
- 1:12:01which is the difference between fermentation and oxidation which
- 1:12:06is allowed to oxidize on the floor in the basket for about
- 1:12:10anywhere from on a scale of one to ten anywhere up to finger
- 1:12:16between three and six it's semi Oxford semi oxidized and that's
- 1:12:21the tea we drink and this is the one with the most Potency for
- 1:12:25hell. And then when the Chinese
- 1:12:29nationalist, I came to Taiwan, they brought this along to their
- 1:12:33grew, it in the mountains around Sherwood that gave birth to what
- 1:12:36we know is high mountain oolong tea, and that is the gold
- 1:12:41standard far. As I'm concerned, there's many
- 1:12:43good teams around, but this has so many properties.
- 1:12:46I won't go into it. Use this whole interview, just
- 1:12:49to promote the tea, I drink, but there's a reason for it all my
- 1:12:52teachers. Is from Taiwan, I learned
- 1:12:56everything I learned from my future's there, I would say 80%
- 1:13:01of it at the tea-table, I'd go to the house.
- 1:13:04Well, they come to my house and we make cheap, it has remarkable
- 1:13:08property. In many ways for health and
- 1:13:12healing. And so, basically, just wrap it
- 1:13:16up here. I start my day in the morning, I
- 1:13:18get up, I drink a glass of water with a little bit of sea salt in
- 1:13:21it, and then I do like tchibo. And after that, I met Pete and
- 1:13:27while I'm drinking tea, I'll go and do another, two, three forms
- 1:13:32of Qigong and all that. And that's the day.
- 1:13:35And then at night, I do some Qigong before I go to bed.
- 1:13:40So I want to talk about the Qigong.
- 1:13:41Let's stick with the tea for a second oolong by far.
- 1:13:44My favorite does it matter if you're ruling is Monkey Picked
- 1:13:49or handpicked by humans. Basically, let's get down to the
- 1:13:53brass tacks here. There's a lot of good tea in
- 1:13:56China. The most of it is contaminated
- 1:13:58with chemicals. It is not pesticides and
- 1:14:02additives, is this the air or the ground water, heavy metals,
- 1:14:07and pollution in the groundwater from industry.
- 1:14:10It's just hard to get a purity. And in Taiwan T Growers as
- 1:14:16Specialties we get, we get all of our ideas organic but we
- 1:14:20don't even need certification. I don't mean we my, the people
- 1:14:24we buy from, we have a personal connection with these Growers.
- 1:14:29They sell every leaf. Every time this is such a demand
- 1:14:32for, they don't use any chemicals they use.
- 1:14:38Fruit peeling and peanut shells and stuff approval eyes in that
- 1:14:41chemical fertilizers etc, etc. So it's t at its best growing in
- 1:14:45the mountains. And the unique thing about it is
- 1:14:48that because it's taiwan's on the ocean and T is going in the
- 1:14:52mountains at night. The Ocean Mist comes up And it
- 1:14:57just blankets the tea fields. And so that minerals from the
- 1:15:03ocean are taken into the tea leaves minerals are powerful to
- 1:15:08the nervous system very important.
- 1:15:11So all in all, if you like it alone, T, you should try our Chi
- 1:15:16grunting RT. Is you try something from to my
- 1:15:20menu? I could have it sent to you from
- 1:15:22Taiwan, please do. And the other way to do it.
- 1:15:28Maybe is where are you in Canada.
- 1:15:30I am on the west coast on Vancouver Island Victoria
- 1:15:35because my guy was doing my editing for my Memoir is in
- 1:15:40Montreal, he just ordered some right there any way we can work
- 1:15:44on that later. I love to get some the tea and
- 1:15:48it's made with a little pot, but if you like key and your
- 1:15:52chiidren, you'll I don't need to say anything.
- 1:15:54It speaks. But I'm just saying, is, because
- 1:15:56of the wave, two things chemical contamination is a big problem.
- 1:16:02You don't want that. And the other one is unique
- 1:16:05properties. In Taiwan of the ocean are
- 1:16:07dropping the minerals on and using organic fertilizers and
- 1:16:10all that, and everything is hand-picked With the fingers,
- 1:16:15which have tea. Yes, and you don't cut the leaf,
- 1:16:20you don't break the lead. All of these factors mean, that
- 1:16:24that's the creme de La Creme of tea oolong tea, which I say, and
- 1:16:30I stick by it and I could defend.
- 1:16:33This thesis is, most power is the best thing in the world in
- 1:16:37terms of what he's supposed to do, and it's really a great
- 1:16:41Health and Longevity timing. And how does that compare with a
- 1:16:45Chinese puer? That's a whole different thing.
- 1:16:50The pore pressure is a lot of fake stuff there.
- 1:16:53It's a scam sometimes. And sometimes night the poor is
- 1:16:58a tea. That's fermented.
- 1:17:00It's packed in a real brick or a wheel and put in a in a room.
- 1:17:07That's got humidity in it and allowed to ferment sometimes.
- 1:17:11I mean the best ones, 50, 60 years and then 450 grams is sold
- 1:17:16for a million dollars. This is ridiculous, it's absurd.
- 1:17:23And at this I don't see it but the poor people are Fanatics.
- 1:17:28They think, I stood a lot of timing, you know that everywhere
- 1:17:32I went, you know, 40 this to you know that I asked my Leticia.
- 1:17:37I said, what's the most expensive poor?
- 1:17:41You're a fan. He merely said a 450 gram wheel
- 1:17:45for 1 million Renminbi. That's like two hundred fifty
- 1:17:50thousand dollars. U.s., wow, we are very best
- 1:17:55teas. Thousands of times better
- 1:17:58tasting in my opinion because all poor to me to stop.
- 1:18:02Seems like old socks. No, I just don't see, I don't
- 1:18:08get it. It has, okay, what's it for a
- 1:18:11particularly good for Digestive properties.
- 1:18:13You need a lot of meat. Which the Chinese do or dairy
- 1:18:18products. It helps digestion, but it
- 1:18:20doesn't have the properties of a good for good.
- 1:18:24Hold on. No.
- 1:18:26All right. Well, I definitely want to get
- 1:18:27some of your hulong. Let's talk about chi gong.
- 1:18:31Yeah. Are you doing the same forms
- 1:18:34every day? Or do you have a variety of
- 1:18:37different forms that you do? Well, now, at my age, I've
- 1:18:41served with boiled it down to my favorite.
- 1:18:45I've learned so many hundreds of different moods from different
- 1:18:49teachers. I have a handbook, I don't know
- 1:18:52if you know about this one, I've written two books on Qi Gong is
- 1:18:56the big one which has the history and all that.
- 1:18:58And then my, it's actually the last book I wrote Before the
- 1:19:03Memoir, it's called the essence of g, go.
- 1:19:05Yes. Handbook, forms for Davey
- 1:19:07practice. Shambhala published it, okay.
- 1:19:11A lot of people really like that or doing well, there's not much
- 1:19:14texting is 56 forms in their Illustrated and with a lot of
- 1:19:21detail on how to do them. So, anyone who has any kind of
- 1:19:25background and she going can learn from that book.
- 1:19:28It's really meant, as a practice book.
- 1:19:31So what I do every day, Is in that book.
- 1:19:37Although I don't do that many. I don't do that lied to about
- 1:19:40half an hour, 45 minutes in the morning and about 20 minutes at
- 1:19:45night. And basically, I do the same
- 1:19:48forms for the once in a while. Like this this morning, I
- 1:19:51brought in a form that I haven't practiced for a long time.
- 1:19:57Occasionally, I will make an adjustment in But there's a
- 1:20:02basically, a routine that I like to follow, by the way, doesn't
- 1:20:06matter any tree going form that you really like, or maybe two or
- 1:20:10three, if you really like them and you just practice them
- 1:20:12longer eventually, the energy runs all your Channels with any
- 1:20:16one of those forms. What is the benefit you get from
- 1:20:19chi gong, what do you feel? Well, it's done with your, okay.
- 1:20:25First of all, this is the first stage, which I call warm up with
- 1:20:29where you just do certain. It's basically stretching
- 1:20:31Loosening the body, you know, you go to a gym, you compact the
- 1:20:34body weight training, and all that.
- 1:20:37But that's not what we want to do.
- 1:20:39You want your joints to loosen up and you want to stretch your
- 1:20:42tendons. So there's a few movements,
- 1:20:45which have nothing to do with breathing just to loosen up the
- 1:20:48body. It's and then you get to the
- 1:20:50main practice, the main form, which is a synchronization of
- 1:20:57the breath with particular body movement, the body move,
- 1:21:01Movements Focus, the flow of energy on particular channels.
- 1:21:06Maybe the heart channel of the lung channel of the river
- 1:21:09Channel, although it and ends up traveling, all your channel.
- 1:21:13So, what it is, is like this, your breath Which is something
- 1:21:19you can control. Yeah, you can't control many of
- 1:21:22you autonomous functions. Now, if you just don't pay
- 1:21:26attention to it, you'll breathe. That's autonomic part of your
- 1:21:29nervous system, but you can also take control of your breath.
- 1:21:32You can regulate your breath by breathing in a certain way. and
- 1:21:37that is, Our access direct regulator to our internal energy
- 1:21:45system. We have it, we have net
- 1:21:49meridians, we call them. I think in India, they call the
- 1:21:52noughties or whatever we have invisible channels going through
- 1:21:56our body through which energy flows, this is not even accepted
- 1:21:59in Western medicine, but we know that it's there.
- 1:22:04And so this and these channels feed energy to your organs net,
- 1:22:08and they can get blocked, they can, they can be deficient and
- 1:22:11all that. So when you breathe in a
- 1:22:14regulated way soft, smooth, With and deep, it doesn't have to be,
- 1:22:21you know, there's no breath retention or anything involved.
- 1:22:23It's just basically rhythmic, smooth, breathing, and combine
- 1:22:27that, with a particular movement of the body and synchronize it.
- 1:22:32So, at the top of the breath, you reach the top of the
- 1:22:35movement, and at the end of the breath, end of the movement, you
- 1:22:39tap into your energy system and you can get your energy system.
- 1:22:45The channels open and the energy flowing through it.
- 1:22:48It's a way the breath breathing in a certain way, is a way of
- 1:22:53getting into your energy system and regulating its, its flow and
- 1:22:59Sochi the word. Chih-hao means two things, that
- 1:23:03means air breath or energy, I'm going is just work.
- 1:23:10So, chicken is energy work. Done with the breath.
- 1:23:13I'm a huge fan. And I practice a few different
- 1:23:17variations of the, a brocade. And it actually got me into
- 1:23:21archery, which is another one of my favorite now, forms of
- 1:23:24meditation because doing some of the movements that are Archer
- 1:23:27esk. I was doing those so often I
- 1:23:30thought. Well, why don't?
- 1:23:31I just got myself a bow and then yeah, that's one of my favorite
- 1:23:36forms. Absolutely for me too.
- 1:23:40I'm soon, interviewing Kenneth Cohen who's oh yeah, well known
- 1:23:45Qi. Gong practitioner and writer.
- 1:23:48Yes. But thank you for that
- 1:23:51explanation of both your Qi Gong.
- 1:23:53And your tea Kong. Yeah, it's risky.
- 1:23:56It was without that, I'd be gone.
- 1:24:01It's your daily ritual, daily connection.
- 1:24:03Yeah and you know the T does various things to it keeps
- 1:24:08alkalize your body fluids. Keep the slightly out to end and
- 1:24:12that's the healthy way and all diseases involved with the city
- 1:24:17conditions and the tri breathing properly.
- 1:24:21Also, alkalizes, your bloodstream and keep the energy
- 1:24:27moving and you don't need to go to the gym.
- 1:24:31Is there any particular facet or philosophy or teaching of the
- 1:24:35dowel that resonates most strongly with you or has had the
- 1:24:38greatest impact? Well I had to say because the
- 1:24:42Dow always goes back to the daodejing I would say it's the
- 1:24:47basic principle that had the biggest impact on me because I
- 1:24:51see them everywhere. I mean, the most basic one from
- 1:24:55the primordial, primordial, Unity of the Dow eun-jung and
- 1:25:01then Community from there. The five Elemental energies
- 1:25:04balance and Harmony, but I see those principles applied and
- 1:25:10coming out in everything. And if there's something wrong
- 1:25:14with something, the taste of something or something's not
- 1:25:20growing properly in your garden. You're going to find that you
- 1:25:24get their young or the one of the five elements that are out
- 1:25:27of out of sync and you straighten it out with that.
- 1:25:30So what I liked about the dollars, its simplicity That's
- 1:25:35all. It's not that that's what's
- 1:25:37inspired me the most about it. Well, all of your books are
- 1:25:41incredible. Thank you for those.
- 1:25:43Can you talk a bit before we wrap up here about your, your
- 1:25:47Memoir, your two volumes shots from the dab?
- 1:25:50What's the what's the first subtitle sex drugs in the Dow?
- 1:25:54Yeah. Sex drugs in the Dow that takes
- 1:25:57me up through. it starts at Berkeley and my brother and I
- 1:26:04were about to embark on it because if we were in the
- 1:26:06airline business, my family I we had free passes we went to
- 1:26:10Bombay things happen and then it takes me up through my Sixteen
- 1:26:19years in Taiwan. so sex drugs in the doubt, basically there was a
- 1:26:25lot of sex to the valley drugs and then there was this thing
- 1:26:30that I've discovered amidst all that Merchants the Dow.
- 1:26:36The second one is called Energy Light and luminous space.
- 1:26:40It's basically when I settle down linked up with my wife snow
- 1:26:48and the covers up the life, I had in Thailand and in Byron Bay
- 1:26:54Australia. And that's also NG light
- 1:26:57luminous space. I was more getting into the
- 1:27:02nature of Reality spiritual, not so much spiritual practice and
- 1:27:07I'll consider myself a meditator or anything, but understanding
- 1:27:13the things we were talking about and also things that went wrong,
- 1:27:18I had some some rough hurdles to cover which is in the last few
- 1:27:22chapters I don't know how people are gonna respond to this so
- 1:27:26far. It's been pretty good but I
- 1:27:29think a lot of people think from my books they're thinking I've
- 1:27:32been the dress. My website as dr.
- 1:27:35Reed gets in there, dr. Reed, I think I'm a doctor or
- 1:27:41even more. It's sort of embarrassing.
- 1:27:43Master. You know, they think maybe I
- 1:27:47wear robes and very clean liver in terms of the conventional
- 1:27:54view of that. So what I talk right about my
- 1:27:57book Shows how I actually got to where I am now through a
- 1:28:04colorful life with ups and down. And I don't know what motivated
- 1:28:09me to do that. I guess it was just to show
- 1:28:13people that if I can do it, anyone can do it.
- 1:28:17Well, thank you for doing it. I haven't read them, but I'm
- 1:28:20really looking forward to reading them.
- 1:28:23Okay, well, I'm doing some last-minute uploads on the
- 1:28:31second one, which will be done in about two weeks and then
- 1:28:35that's fine. The first ones.
- 1:28:36Okay, perfect. And you're a prolific writer.
- 1:28:41You writing anything? So is this it for now?
- 1:28:45Yeah, I don't know. I'm going to write any more
- 1:28:48books. It depends what happened here in
- 1:28:52the situation we're in. I mean, I've got some real
- 1:28:55problems. I'm living in a very noisy
- 1:28:57place. Here, I can't write very well.
- 1:29:00So, I've got to find another place to live or if it becomes
- 1:29:02possible to go somewhere else. Like I wouldn't mind going back
- 1:29:07to Taiwan, but here there are some obstacles for me to just
- 1:29:15actually have the conditions of peace and quiet in which I can
- 1:29:18do my writing. But I'll probably get over that
- 1:29:22but I do have some ideas. Yeah, great.
- 1:29:27Well, if they ever materialized, I look forward to those as well.
- 1:29:32Yeah, door Daniel. Where can people find more about
- 1:29:36you? I know you have a website.
- 1:29:39Yeah. My website then read dot org?
- 1:29:45Día, en, R. EI d dot org orgy.
- 1:29:49And my Books, of course, you're out there.
- 1:29:51I think they're all still in print, but I don't, I don't do a
- 1:29:56blog or anything. Occasionally, something new will
- 1:29:59be posted on my website. I have a poetry page, some
- 1:30:02poems. I've written over the years and
- 1:30:05I could occasionally post articles.
- 1:30:08On health and that stuff that the website and it's a pretty
- 1:30:11website at a Korean designer, a woman.

- 1:30:57often reach out to those writers.
