- 0:00So if we're if we're
- 0:03gonna kill this guy if he's
- 0:07already dead once nox is on
- 0:10the job it's over baby it's just a matter of when yeah you're right i'm sure
- 0:15it's always how the story ends right no not always sometimes the hero stays
- 0:24and makes his own little homestead i don't think i'm the the hero in this particular story, Charlie.
- 0:30So maybe you're not the hero. I got news for you.
- 0:35You ain't the villain either.
- 0:38Alright, guys. We're back here. And it's kind of fun because we did a couple
- 0:43of these retrospectives.
- 0:45We did it with Nightmare on Elm Street and we did it with...
- 0:49Well, the G.S.N.s? Friday the 13th. Yeah.
- 0:51Where we always ended with the reboot. Like the reboot requel.
- 0:56Or the remake. The remake, yeah.
- 0:59And we're doing it with this one. Roadhouse, we both enjoyed.
- 1:03It's cheesy crap, but that's nothing wrong with that. We'll go with it.
- 1:07Some good music and, you know, just have fun with it. Second one was shit,
- 1:13but it had some good action.
- 1:15You know, you almost wish they kind
- 1:17of mixed both of them. That's what you appreciate? That's both worlds.
- 1:20No, Jake Busey was overutilized. He was in it too much. Well,
- 1:23he's the most memorable thing from it. Yeah, that's the problem, though.
- 1:27And this is the problem you and I are going to argue with.
- 1:30Even though 99% of the world will agree with me, you're going to have this fixation
- 1:36on some terrible acting here. Yeah.
- 1:40I think I know who you're referring to. Yeah. So we're here to talk the controversial.
- 1:45Believe it or not, all these remakes and reboots come. It's amazing.
- 1:49All these reboots and remakes that come out. I'll take it. We'll go see it.
- 1:53But you touch Roadhouse. Yeah.
- 1:56Oh, my God. It's sacrilege. Yeah. Because obviously the original was perfect,
- 2:02you know, and everywhere.
- 2:03Yeah. Yeah. But I'm cool with that. It's like tango and cash.
- 2:07I want people touching it.
- 2:10So I'll go. I get it. But you got Doug Liman here, man. This guy is an A-list director.
- 2:17American Made, him and Tom Cruise, Edge of Tomorrow, him and Tom Cruise,
- 2:21The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mr. Smith. Yep. Guy knows action.
- 2:26Guy knows what he's doing. Yep.
- 2:28You got Jake Gyllenhaal, who I like. I liked him in The Prisoners and other
- 2:33stuff he's done. Donnie Darko, of course.
- 2:35Donnie Darko with also Patrick Swayze. You know, he's built for it He's done some working out.
- 2:42And, you know, a decent little cast here Some fun actors here In this film And
- 2:48a lot of controversy Because,
- 2:50you know, you don't touch Roadhouse But I'll tell you what, the reviews are
- 2:54pretty Fair to this one And I'm gonna have to say here, guys,
- 2:58I like Roadhouse And I think most of the 80s movies Have yet remade The originals
- 3:03are always better, besides Fright Night Believe it or not, we'll get to that
- 3:06one I still like that sacrilege,
- 3:09And But I have to say guys Before we start here This is a lot better film than
- 3:16the original Roadhouse and,
- 3:19I'm gonna tell you Why but that's not to Take away that I enjoy the original,
- 3:26Okay This is where everyone just gets Well I mean certainly on a technical Level
- 3:31and you know Acting wise and stuff well apart from a certain Martin Chapp,
- 3:36who will get to- No, I want to say acting. I want to say acting.
- 3:38Jake Gyllenhaal is very good here.
- 3:40Yeah, I think Swayze is good, but we'll go over, and that's more about direction.
- 3:44Jake Gyllenhaal is told what to do and how to do it. He can do comedy as well, very well.
- 3:52Yeah, he can play deadpan pretty good. Yeah.
- 3:55So this is a film that, back when we had The Phantom Menace,
- 4:00they're going completely opposite direction here.
- 4:03They did these, what they call CGI stunt doubles. So what they did was they
- 4:07would use the stunt actors, the one actually fighting.
- 4:11Famous one would be Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, and Ray Park fighting Darth
- 4:15Maul against the other guys. Yes.
- 4:17Obi-Wan and, I can't remember his name. Qui-Gon Jinn.
- 4:21There you go. And that wasn't them fighting on that battleship,
- 4:26Death Star, whoever it was. It's all green screen.
- 4:28It was stuntmen. But what they do is the CGI, the heads of the actors on the
- 4:33stuntman's bodies. Yes. That's what they did here.
- 4:37And it's called CG fight doubles. And stuntmen use it now for these quick closeups
- 4:43and they go so fast that it blurs the image so you really don't see.
- 4:47That it's a fake punch. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not going to get me wrong,
- 4:51Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor and the gang, they all did their,
- 4:54you know, obviously trained and fought in certain scenes, but this is how they did this.
- 4:59So these closeup shots, because a lot of the fighting here has done closeups
- 5:04and the one, my, one of my complaints about the original one,
- 5:08there wasn't enough fighting where even the second one upped the fighting a bit.
- 5:12This one, balls of law has some really cool fights. Yeah. The action's good.
- 5:17Yeah. So we're going to jump into this one and we're going to talk Roadhouse.
- 5:22All right. We've got. Nobody wins a fight. All right. So this time around in
- 5:27Roadhouse, we've got Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter.
- 5:34Elwood Dalton. Who left the ring for his violent, violent temper toward a fellow
- 5:39fighter. He killed Dalton.
- 5:41We got, sadly, Conor McGregor plays Knox, who pretty much just plays himself.
- 5:47He looks like a fucking obnoxious, smiley leprechaun. He looks like a psychotic, fuzzy burr.
- 5:54Yeah, yeah, that's perfect. Yes, I like that. I'm with that. It's terrible.
- 6:00It doesn't ruin the film because you have such good supporting villains that
- 6:03are so bad at what they do.
- 6:06We kind of talked about that with the original Roadhouse. They,
- 6:08the one thing that works about this film is that they keep, you always,
- 6:14I always believe if you're doing a remake, make it your own, do your thing.
- 6:18You have the right to do that, but be respectful of the original. Yes.
- 6:24And keep the source material there. And they do that incredibly well.
- 6:29They do actually, to be fair.
- 6:30And that's, and that's because of Doug Liman and his direction team.
- 6:33And I mean, he's the DP and the writing and all. Yeah. So we got Jessica Williams.
- 6:38She plays Frankie, who's the bar owner here of the Roadhouse,
- 6:44simply called the Roadhouse.
- 6:45It's not Frank this time. It's Frankie. Little nod to the original.
- 6:49We got Danella McQuire. Yes, she's a Portuguese actress. She played Ratcatcher
- 6:542 in the recent The Suicide Squad.
- 6:57Oh, okay. I didn't really see her background much. Yeah.
- 7:00I like to see Billy Magnuson. He always plays a good brat. Yes,
- 7:04he's the spoilt brat kid of the main gangster who we never see because he's in jail. Yes.
- 7:10Yes. Well, we might see for a sequel. It'd be interesting because that'd be
- 7:13an interesting sequel, Revenge. Yeah. Have Robert Davi or something play him.
- 7:17Yeah. Yeah, exactly. He'd be good. So we got Billy Magnuson who plays Ben.
- 7:21And then we got the guy who plays the sheriff, Joaquin de la Media.
- 7:25He always plays baddies.
- 7:27He always plays bad guys. What? That's his name on it? Big Dick?
- 7:30I just call him the sheriff. But that is his name? Uh-huh. Then we got Laura,
- 7:34Billy, Reeve, Del, Vince, Moe, Charlie.
- 7:37So there you go. Yeah. I like the henchman who's a nice guy.
- 7:41He's actually, it's like he's wound up on the wrong job, but he's like,
- 7:45oh, hey, how's it going? You know?
- 7:47And I'm glad he was spurred by Jake later on.
- 7:52So the intro here, I think is clever and what they do,
- 7:58I like the fact that she's going to talk to this UFC fighter to help her get
- 8:04the bar in order, just like the original, but because.
- 8:08She can't see the fight because this guy shows up Dalton and this guy post Malone
- 8:14cameo won't fight him because once he's discovered who he is,
- 8:18he's a famous UFC fighter.
- 8:20Her the fight's done and he won't fight him and
- 8:23it's a nice intro to right
- 8:27away who dalton is but i like the fact she wasn't
- 8:29looking for him she was looking for somebody else yes and
- 8:32also as well yes he's suicidal yeah
- 8:36he he has nothing to live for i mean but
- 8:39but but we talked about the opening scene the first one where
- 8:42he gets knifed in the bar fight and he's
- 8:46all badass and takes a knife i'll tell you what in
- 8:49this one and this is not because the first one didn't
- 8:52do it well it's just because the effects and what they can do now with technology
- 8:57because when one of the guys walks up to him and goes you just cost me five
- 9:01hundred dollars whatever it was because he showed up to fight him he sticks
- 9:06it and they show it and it's obviously clearly cgi of some sort but done
- 9:11so well and cgi is always looks beautiful when
- 9:14it's done in small doses and it's just it's just a nice setup that this guy
- 9:19is a badass and he's also not the sort of the flawless character that the original
- 9:25dalton by patrick swayze was he's just such a super guy and brilliant at everything
- 9:29this guy is he's a bit of a tortured soul he's an anti-hero.
- 9:34Yes, and that's what this movie does right. Now, again, that's not Swayze's
- 9:39fault. Yes, of course. That's Rowdy Harrington's direction.
- 9:41But in this one, I guarantee you says, you're not going to be Superman here.
- 9:47You're going to get, I mean, Jesus, even in the original,
- 9:52you see him get cut, but you never see him, the bullets and the bleeding that
- 9:59Jake Gyllenhaal takes in this film is all over the place.
- 10:03He's not superman even i mean this is
- 10:05even sort of reflected with the the young
- 10:09girl in the bookshop you know who she's talking about you know like the pope
- 10:12western you know i'm just saying well is that right are you are you the hero
- 10:15the hero and he goes you know at the end of he says i'm not the hero say yeah
- 10:19but you're also not the villain you know so that's all reflected and like i
- 10:22was saying the you know basically the first one is a western for all intents
- 10:26and purposes but But so is this, you know, so again,
- 10:28it's in keeping with the tone of the original.
- 10:32Exactly. They're just, quite frankly, perfecting it. Yeah, well.
- 10:36They're doing, no, they are. They're giving us the answers that we wanted from the original. Yeah.
- 10:43It's certainly more refined and better, but it's not perfect,
- 10:47but yes. Oh, it's not perfect. That's because of Conor McGregor.
- 10:51Conor McGregor. I do like, yeah, that's just you being you. You're just going to like stupid shit.
- 11:00What are you talking about? Your finger doesn't... It's sad you feel that way.
- 11:04I'm serious. It's sad you feel that way.
- 11:06You actually thought he... No, no,
- 11:08no, no. He was just over the top and pantomime. But that's the problem.
- 11:12That's the problem. A scene stealer. We're talking... No, he's not a scene stealer.
- 11:17He is, whether we like it or not. No, he's not. He is terrible at it.
- 11:20Alan Rickman, die hard, is a scene stealer.
- 11:23Whether we like it or not... No, this guy's not.
- 11:25Don't you dare. Whether we like it or not.
- 11:28Conor McGregor, a scene stealer. You cannot take your eyes off him whenever
- 11:32he is on camera. He's a whole, we have no choice.
- 11:35Exactly. So that to me is stealing a scene. That's not scene stealing.
- 11:39It is. Whether we like it or not.
- 11:41You don't know the definition of scene stealing at all. I do.
- 11:43And whether we like it or not, he is stealing those scenes. Even off Gyllenhaal.
- 11:49Whether we like it or not. Whatever, let's move on. We're done talking about him.
- 11:55It's not funny. It's sad. It is funny.
- 11:58It's really sad that you think he's better in this than Jake Gyllenhaal. He didn't say that.
- 12:03I didn't say that. Yes, he did. Because if he's stealing, supposedly,
- 12:07the scenes, he's better than Jake Gyllenhaal. That doesn't mean that there's a difference.
- 12:10No, no, no. You just said it. It's poppin' man.
- 12:14Oh jesus christ you know you you don't know
- 12:16what you don't you don't know that you're go to gary oldman and
- 12:19say god i love how you stole those movies that you're always in that you're
- 12:22like in a leon the professional just like conor mcgregor did in roadhouse but
- 12:26whether we like i'm not saying there's no i'm not saying conor mcgregor's good
- 12:30i'm saying he's awful in this and he's completely over the top but whenever
- 12:33he is on he's awful yes i know why i'm agreeing with you but whenever he is
- 12:37on the screen no no he's awful but yet he steals the show because
- 12:41it's just so over-the-top absurd.
- 12:44Over a film that we've already discussed within the first five minutes of this
- 12:48conversation that this is a good, darker take. He's suicidal, we got this.
- 12:54But I love the fact there's a clown in here and he just steals the whole thing.
- 12:57I didn't say I loved it, but I'm saying it is completely memorable.
- 13:01You did! If you're saying he's
- 13:03seen stealing, that makes that you like the character. Not necessarily.
- 13:07Not necessarily. It means you can't ignore the character. Victor.
- 13:10All right. Let's just go back. Let's just go back to the comedy you're watching.
- 13:14Unreal. Unreal. But anyways, like you mentioned in the beginning of the podcast,
- 13:19yeah, he's suicidal. And that seat on the train tracks.
- 13:24Now he gets hit by the train. He decides, well, not today, but he can't get
- 13:28the car out in time. Yeah. And he takes a hit.
- 13:31Pretty nice little, I don't know if the car wouldn't have exploded,
- 13:36but he takes a walloping And he kind of puts you in the car a bit when he does
- 13:41that. He takes a lot of wallopings in this. I know. You know.
- 13:45But I do like the fact we have a, once you make this character,
- 13:51Dalton, suicidal, it makes him the guy who has nothing to lose.
- 13:57He doesn't give a shit then. Don't. Yeah. He's a time bomb.
- 14:01So when he decides to take this role, he obviously takes his bus at this point.
- 14:07He can't take the car anymore.
- 14:09They wrote off him buying a car every time, which I like. Yeah,
- 14:13he got rid of his car pretty early on.
- 14:16Yeah, to a train.
- 14:19We're introduced to Glass Books. That's Charlie and Stephen,
- 14:22the father and daughter team. I like them.
- 14:24I like these two characters a lot. They were likable and sort of,
- 14:27they provide good sort of bookends for the, you know, the beginning and the
- 14:31start when he goes to Florida Keys, which in reality was shot in the Dominican Republic.
- 14:36Yeah, yep. It was, is that, it was the Black Keys they called it or something?
- 14:41Black Keys or something, I think that's called, yeah, yeah.
- 14:44Yeah, the little restaurant next to it's called the Double Deuce.
- 14:46Yes, there's quite a few references in here. Well, I mean, it hooks up with
- 14:50a doctor lady as well, you know?
- 14:53Yeah, yeah. But this one can act. Yes, it can act, yes.
- 14:59Now, the great thing about having Stephen and Charlie, they're not in it enough,
- 15:03but like you said, they're mainly in the beginning and the end.
- 15:05Uh, they'll have a cameo here and there, but what they're kind of the narrator,
- 15:11not the narrator, they're kind of the beacon of hope for him.
- 15:15They're there. He, he, they're there, his wise men. They represent sort of a normal life.
- 15:20Yeah. Yes.
- 15:24There's a nice line there at
- 15:25the end of the film where he's leaving and he goes, I'm not the good guy.
- 15:31I'm not the cowboy going away, blah, blah, the sunset. I'm not the good guy.
- 15:35And she makes the comment, but you're not the bad guy either.
- 15:38Yeah, you're not the villain. And that's exactly where he is at.
- 15:41He's the anti-hero. He's in the middle of the ground. Yeah.
- 15:44Very well done. And I hope people catch some of the lines that are actually
- 15:48in this film and not be blurred by all the, you know, the action stuff.
- 15:52You know, we talked about 80s cheese a lot. That's our favorite.
- 15:54And this is done, this blends some dark tones, but it blends some humor into it.
- 16:01That might be when you're talking about with McGregor. and then you'll blend
- 16:03some cheese, it keeps the 80s cheese, especially with the boat chasing,
- 16:09and the villain, the main villain, you know, the son of the gangster yeah,
- 16:13Billy Magnes he's still out of the 80s, you know,
- 16:17Now you talk about a scene stealer. I think he does. Oh, he's very good.
- 16:20Yeah. And he can act. He's such a spoiled brat.
- 16:23Oh, he's obnoxious. And I love the scene when you're introduced to him and he's
- 16:27talking to his cronies and the guy's shaving him and it's a fucking ocean and
- 16:32it's the waves are. Yeah.
- 16:34And he keeps cutting them and the poor barber is shitting his pants.
- 16:38So he cuts him again and he goes up and he punches the captain. Yeah.
- 16:42Because yeah, you think that he's going to punch the barber,
- 16:44but he's not. that he punches the guy who's steering the boat.
- 16:47And that's our intro to him, which is perfect. Yeah, he's a complete asshole.
- 16:51He's a little yuppie prick. Yeah, and you can picture him in a lethal weapon
- 16:55film or something. No problem at all.
- 16:57Billy Madison, he's done a lot of stuff. He's been around for a bit.
- 17:01But yeah, and it's a well-grounded cast. I like everyone here. Even the doofuses.
- 17:08And it casts well. But again, I think so did the Roadhouse in general.
- 17:13I think Roadhouse did cast well itself.
- 17:16So they kept true to that.
- 17:18So I do like when the music. Now, they didn't bring Jeff Healy or that kind
- 17:24of atmosphere. No, it's not a sovereign bar.
- 17:28Yeah. And also they're not going to, oh, it's my old friend.
- 17:32Yeah. You know, Dalton, they weren't friends.
- 17:35As a matter of fact, every scene there's a different band playing.
- 17:38And some of them are jazz bonds and all sorts.
- 17:40Yeah. And their music's fucking good in this movie. isn't it?
- 17:43It's pretty decent, yeah, it's pretty likable, yeah.
- 17:46And I really like the Post Malone song. It seems quite authentic.
- 17:50Yes, and, yes, and set up for today's standards,
- 17:56Yes, you can picture these types of bands and bars these days,
- 17:59you know, it's not a honky-tonk bar, you know, not that there's anything wrong
- 18:03with that, you know what I mean, but it's not a sort of, you know,
- 18:06it's updated well. They, they.
- 18:09And I like the fact, I think they also got away from the relationship because
- 18:15of the fact, sadly, Patrick Swayze and Jeff Healy are past now. They're gone.
- 18:20So I don't think they wanted to step on that. Yeah.
- 18:24You know, let that be Roadhouse. That's the 89 Roadhouse thing.
- 18:29And I respected that a lot. Also, we talk about Carrie. Remember Carrie?
- 18:34I fucking couldn't stand in the first one. She shows up with breakfast and blah, blah.
- 18:38This carrie is actually kind of cool it's that i actually
- 18:41prefer the original but no actually no that's just an exaggeration no
- 18:43no i think they're both pretty annoying to be fair you know no this
- 18:47one's okay yeah she is still a little more irritating as you come she calls
- 18:51to his house which is now a boat in this one yeah breakfast obviously a replaying
- 18:56of the scene from the original yeah but they don't but she's not gaga she's
- 19:00not she's not annoying that yeah you know what it could be she's not doing it
- 19:04over the top it's normal like a normal person okay i'll say
- 19:06that yes and thankfully we are spared the sight of gillan howell's butt all night.
- 19:12Yeah i mean yeah he plays he puts
- 19:15his pants on he's got underwear on when she shows up he says yeah he doesn't
- 19:21go to the to the the opening of the door as the sun rays hit his ass yeah yeah
- 19:28and he pauses for a minute yeah exactly and that's totally like a bit of a sort of,
- 19:33and then joke about the original and that scene with Swayze running about literally butt naked.
- 19:40First encounter. Yes. Where we meet pretty much the two, Moe and Del.
- 19:44These guys are pretty good. Yes. And.
- 19:49They don't tell you the rules, but they do the rules by showing you.
- 19:55Yes, exactly. So he needs to get these guys, get them outside.
- 19:59So he goes up and he starts going toward their bikes. Yes. He goes,
- 20:02are those your bikes out there? So they get them out of the bar.
- 20:06They think he's going to fuck with their bikes.
- 20:09And I'll tell you what, man, how fast he fucking moves. Now,
- 20:12I don't, with the slapping, it's such a fun scene.
- 20:16Beats the crap out of him. And he's like, how is the hospital?
- 20:19And Mo's like, well, traffic. 25 minutes.
- 20:22Yeah, 25 minutes away. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:25Yeah, I like Mo. Oh, my. Yeah. Yeah, and then he, after he beats the shit out
- 20:30of him, within a half a second, he's driving with the hospital.
- 20:34Yeah, he's all very tongue-in-cheek and a bit sore.
- 20:36And again, Gyllenhaal's comedic timing is on the ball. He really can.
- 20:41Well, he plays it dead. Yeah, and his timing is perfect.
- 20:45Yeah, it is. Well, the great thing about Gyllenhaal is that he does,
- 20:49even growing up, he was one of his first film was City Slickers.
- 20:52And then he did Pleasantville. And so he's, he's been, he's been in all types
- 20:57of genres. And he can act, he can do the business, you know?
- 21:00Exactly. No, you're spot on. Exactly.
- 21:05When he's driving in the hospital you can hear
- 21:08kokomo playing in the background and then they're
- 21:11all hurt and then he goes guys bump and they're
- 21:15like oh no the comedy here has played very well and
- 21:18whereas with the original it's all intentionally comedic
- 21:22a lot of the time whereas here it's intentional and it works well
- 21:25they blend they blend it better here we talked about that
- 21:28with roadhouse where you kill wade in a
- 21:31pretty brutal manner and then all of a sudden you're
- 21:34having jokes with tubby or chubby whatever his
- 21:36name was robotic smile and the second one and stuff yeah yeah
- 21:39it's just like where are we where are we here this blends well
- 21:43here well balanced that's the perfect way
- 21:46that's the perfect word i'd use balance yes i think i
- 21:49think i think the problem a lot of people who
- 21:52are given this really harsh reviews have with it
- 21:55i think they were basically looking i'm basically uh something
- 21:59that was they were basically looking the exact same game they
- 22:02were basically looking at 2024 exact copy and
- 22:05paste of the original but why this does have its
- 22:08you know similarities to the original does its own thing too and skillfully
- 22:12i would say i'll be honest skillfully you know again that goes back to the director
- 22:17behind it and and the talent in front of the lens as well like when they handle
- 22:23that when he meets ellie the doctor yes Yes.
- 22:26And he needs to get stitched up. He just go, I don't pay. I'm romping.
- 22:30What was that line he says?
- 22:31Pay don't hurt. Well, he does say a line in reference to the original hero.
- 22:35It's nobody wins a fight. Yeah.
- 22:38But he also says, I don't want any paperwork.
- 22:43Yes. He doesn't say, I don't want help because he's in pain.
- 22:46He just says, I'm not going through the paperwork.
- 22:49Yes. So just give me a bandage. I'll do it later.
- 22:54I love how the boat It's called the boat Her uncle owned all these and he just
- 22:59called them Yes that's right The roadhouse Exactly.
- 23:05But another thing which they Rectify as well here from the second one They have
- 23:10a fucking crocodile in it And it eats a bad guy,
- 23:14Yeah I was about to say that They finally give us a And I promise you They did
- 23:19their homework these guys who wrote this And they put that crocodile in there
- 23:23Just because we never got to see the death of a crocodile Yeah definitely Or
- 23:27they listen to our podcast Well,
- 23:31In the future Time travelers, Doctor Who And a TARDIS.
- 23:39But yes Yeah that was 100% They were on the same page as us With the second
- 23:44one not giving us a crocodile Eating someone Yeah,
- 23:50i do think oh that's right they're
- 23:53they want this this one kind of gives us well
- 23:55i think this it's the same story in the original they want
- 23:59they just want the land because he wants to build an empire yes
- 24:02i that's exactly what it is it's basically his dad and there's basically money
- 24:07involved to do with i'm assuming drug dealing and stuff you know but it's basically
- 24:13they want to knock the roadhouse down they don't actually want the roadhouse
- 24:16itself they want the land and they I want to control the whole of that area,
- 24:20that region of wherever it is in front of the Florida Keys. Yeah.
- 24:25Yeah, because it's easy to get drugs in and out or something.
- 24:27Yes, yeah. It's about the depth of the waters. Yes, that's right. Yeah.
- 24:33There's a nice shot where Dale is going to try to kill him. Yeah.
- 24:37Because he wants to get revenge.
- 24:39And he's walking on the bridge and the car's coming, there's a car coming behind him.
- 24:44It's kind of just like a passing buyer. Then all of a sudden he hits it and
- 24:48the car comes right at him. And you're still there.
- 24:51He actually takes that hit and you're in with him.
- 24:55Yes. And he obviously goes over the bridge and he makes it. But the way that
- 24:59whole thing was, again, the nice blend of CGI and practical really, really worked for me.
- 25:04I think it also works for these scenes as well.
- 25:07And especially because it's, again, it's the CGI is used sparingly,
- 25:11but also because these scenes are happening at night.
- 25:14They can sort of hide it a bit more you know any
- 25:17weak flaws within the cgi yeah and it's
- 25:20and it's happened so fast you get away with being a little blurry exactly and
- 25:23that's the same with the fight later on especially you know like the final fight
- 25:26with conor mcgregor and stuff which you know which does
- 25:29who's who's better acting than alan rickman i did not
- 25:32say that all right but i'm saying whether we fucking like it or not and despite
- 25:36how bad he is you still he it's not even you don't even have have a choice whether
- 25:42you like him or not he's just like in your face he's literally in the audience's
- 25:45face along with the characters in the film a psychotic fuzzy bear so when,
- 25:52after the attempt dell goes to try to finish him off at the boat and this is
- 25:57where he gets eaten by the croc another and neither you know you just saw the
- 26:01car scene when i kind of jumped a little bit this scene scared the shit out
- 26:04of me because i totally forgot about the crocodile at this point I didn't know I was waiting on it.
- 26:08And I do like that Jake Gyllenhaal tried to help him but he can't but yeah there's
- 26:13nothing he can do he's basically crocodile food yeah yeah and he deserved it asshole,
- 26:19so then after he gets it,
- 26:23Jack and Sam show up. It's fucking hilarious. He's, man, you already said you
- 26:28got to come with us. And he's got his gun in his belt.
- 26:31And he's like, that gun's going to be useless. Why? Well, because I'm going
- 26:34to break your index finger and you can't pull the trigger.
- 26:37And he doesn't. By the time he even finishes the sentence, he breaks his index
- 26:41finger. Because they're morons. They're basically idiots, you know?
- 26:45So most of these villains here are, you know? No offense, but that's,
- 26:49I think, the way it would be.
- 26:50Exactly. yeah it's you know it's it's a
- 26:53bit of an obscure sort of comparison here but almost
- 26:56a bit like dead man's shoes which we've just recently reviewed
- 26:59yeah they're morons you know
- 27:02they're dickheads like people you know these types of criminals usually are
- 27:06in the real world you know incompetent idiots it's well the son and then they
- 27:11get the son who's speaking of the most incompetent they he calls his dad again
- 27:16we never know who the dad is but i i guarantee you this This movie doing incredibly well.
- 27:21There'll be a camp. Somebody's coming back.
- 27:25And, but, and cause Knox survives too at the end. Yes, that's right.
- 27:29So Knox might be back. Jesus.
- 27:32But this is where Knox is. He's kind of his hit man is go to henchman, the cleaner.
- 27:36I guess you can say to go in and kick some ass. It sucks because.
- 27:43It's completely over the top. You know what I think the problem with Conor McGregor is?
- 27:47A lot of people don't like him because he's a dick. He is. He's a dick.
- 27:52I'll be honest with you. I don't follow the UFC or anything like that.
- 27:56No, just the whole thing where he hit that poor man in the bar.
- 27:59I don't know much about it, to be honest with you.
- 28:01And he's just nobody.
- 28:04People don't. I know of him, but this is the first time I've properly seen him
- 28:09do something. I don't follow this sort of UFC stuff. Neither do I.
- 28:13So I don't really, I'm not in on that.
- 28:16So this is the first time, I knew who he was. He's obviously well known.
- 28:20I don't follow it either.
- 28:22I do, I think Bustista was UFC fighting too. Yeah, or MMA, mixed martial arts
- 28:27type thing. I don't know.
- 28:28Yeah, when you see Bustista on the screen in Blade Runner 2049 or when you see
- 28:33him at a knock of the cabin and what a brilliant performance those both were.
- 28:37And I would have loved to have seen him in this.
- 28:41That, to me, would have been a threat. I guess because you've got the comic
- 28:47book element of the villains where they're kind of,
- 28:51Keystone Coppery, but you don't like them, you needed a darker element there
- 28:55to fix that. Well, it's completely over the top.
- 28:58And you get this complete opposite character.
- 29:00I think Conor McGregor's a talented man. Clearly, he's fucking a machine.
- 29:05And, you know, I kind of like to see, you know, somebody who you wouldn't think
- 29:11get a role like this, get a role.
- 29:13But I'll tell you what, it's been done 300 times better. His introduction is...
- 29:17With Dolph Lundgren. Yeah.
- 29:18It's been 300 times better with, you know, Dave Bustista.
- 29:22It's been done... His introduction is insane where he's basically... Naked.
- 29:28Yeah, he's naked. He's basically shagging some guy and her husband...
- 29:30Sorry, shagging some woman and her husband comes back and then he's like...
- 29:34He's walking about this like fucking small town naked and then he goes and like
- 29:39rips clothes off from a stall and then sets fire to the stall for no reason
- 29:43at all he's just like you know he needs sectioned.
- 29:50I, the sheriff, I think is kind of wasted. You got a good actor here.
- 29:54Well, he always plays villains. He didn't desperate out on stuff with Antonio Banderas and stuff.
- 29:58Yeah. He was, I think the lead bad guy in bad boys. He pops up.
- 30:03Yeah, exactly. Yeah. And I like to see him, I guess.
- 30:07He's obviously. He's the father. The father. Of Dr. Lady. Yeah. Yeah. Father of Ellie.
- 30:13I do like the Ellie relationship with her and him. There's no sex. There's no blah, blah.
- 30:18It's not because of my prudence thing. Yeah. because the problem with Roadhouse, it happened in one day.
- 30:23And this one, it's about a week or so process.
- 30:27So they go on a small date and he takes them out. It's a bit more grounded.
- 30:30It's a lot more grounded. Yes, exactly.
- 30:32There's no sex scene. They're too shaggy on the roof.
- 30:36Well, there's no, yeah, exactly. They take away. Actually, the first film almost
- 30:41feels like they listen to our pockets, not to be cocky. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 30:44But all the stuff you and I didn't like about Roadhouse, it seems like they've
- 30:47taken it out and corrected it tone down the gratuitous naked butts and sex and
- 30:55also give us a crocodile death,
- 30:57however on an ironic twist to this to your love for your favourite actor Conor
- 31:03McGregor he could have sold the line I fuck like you guys like you in prison
- 31:09100% he could easily have basically.
- 31:13They should have given it to him yeah yeah that
- 31:17would have could the jimmy character the first one was the
- 31:20jimmy i wanted to see in this one darker quiet yeah you
- 31:23know reserved so when he said that comment the first
- 31:26one it didn't make sense exactly it was just completely like
- 31:29so much of the dialogue in the original it's completely it's just it's bizarre
- 31:34but yeah but the you still get our bizarreness and boy do we get it with mcgregor
- 31:39you know yeah yeah and i think that that that's because of the over the topness
- 31:45and the silliness of the first and second to a lesser extent,
- 31:48but especially the first. That's why McGregor's there.
- 31:51Yeah, but again...
- 31:55He doesn't steal the movie. No, I'm not saying that. I don't mean in a good way.
- 31:59I mean in a... No, you can't have that in a good way. What? No,
- 32:02I'm not saying that. Not in a good way.
- 32:03You can't, because when you say someone steals a movie, that's a good thing. He steals a movie.
- 32:08Gyllenhaal steals a movie. You did. You say, okay, it's the same thing as steal
- 32:11the scenes. That he's in.
- 32:12It's the same thing. And he's only in a few scenes. Same thing.
- 32:14But whenever he does, you cannot take your eyes off him. It's just like,
- 32:17what the hell am I watching here?
- 32:18Well, you can't take your eyes off him, because he's in the center of the camera.
- 32:21Exactly, you're forced to.
- 32:23Yes, exactly. He's forced on our fucking phone. Exactly. Fucking hell.
- 32:27You've got this psychotic, fuzzy bar screaming at you. You have no choice. It's nuts.
- 32:34I like when Knox shows up. But there's a nice little thing I saw.
- 32:39I don't know if it was deliberate.
- 32:41Knox and, you know, there's a big bar fight, right? We won't get into details. You guys got to see it.
- 32:45They use the tumbling cam. Yes. That's the cam that James Wan uses in The Conjuring and Made Famous.
- 32:52It's just very, very nicely shot and choreographed. I mean, I'm the expert in
- 32:56how you shoot a fight scene, you know.
- 32:58Well, I am. Yeah, it's very slick.
- 33:02Yeah, very cool. Very modern. Very modern.
- 33:06And there's, he's, Jake Gyllenhaal is holding his own and Conor are fighting.
- 33:12It took two other men to hold him down for Knox to get a punch,
- 33:16a real punch in. and he's just punching and punching.
- 33:19And I like the fact that his buddies, the young bouncers who he never mentioned, they help him.
- 33:29They pull, they grab Conor to get him off him.
- 33:32You know, it was an unfair fight and it was nice to see the young bouncers.
- 33:38He's kind of training to help him up. Backing him up. Yeah. Exactly.
- 33:43And this is his weakness. this he's leaving and
- 33:47he decides i'm done i'm not going through this as you would as you would in
- 33:52reality i would have stayed and fought and killed him it would be like you know
- 33:57what life's too short for this shit to deal with these absolute assholes you
- 34:01know who don't even like me and give me nothing but shit i'm out of here,
- 34:06Fuck it, I would have brought a gun. The end. This is the thing I was going
- 34:10to say about all three of the Roadhouse films.
- 34:13So much of this crap could be solved with just a gun.
- 34:16Like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Swordman jumps at him and
- 34:20he just pulls his gun out and shoots him.
- 34:22In all three of these films, so much of this crap would be solved if they were carrying guns.
- 34:27Yeah, which, well, it kind of does happen when Del shows up on the boat.
- 34:33Aye, but he's a useless idiot ate who deserved to
- 34:36get eaten back up and then and then when ben shoots
- 34:39him he goes jesus a spear gun really but yeah
- 34:43so the fight scene works and he decides he's done
- 34:46i'm not doing this anymore until he sees the glass book has been burned down
- 34:52yes and that because that was his savior that was his that was his church they
- 34:58are they are i guess you can say they are the basically the the only sort of
- 35:02remnant of real humanity within all of these,
- 35:06this cast of sort of all of these characters in this town,
- 35:09which is controlled once again by a bunch of pricks.
- 35:13And the great thing about Gyllenhaal, you don't see him clinching.
- 35:17You don't see him like, ooh, yeah, I'm going to get you now.
- 35:20He's still kind of stone-faced.
- 35:24But he has this move where he kind of walks around and like,
- 35:27it days a little bit like, okay, that's it.
- 35:31So, So not, and boy, does he lose it. I love their homage to the ripping of the throat.
- 35:38So what he does, he just walks up to one of them and he goes,
- 35:42he, and he goes, oh, I'm going to kick your ass. He punches him in the throat.
- 35:45Yep. And all he says to him was, I just broke your high, high,
- 35:49high bone, your high bone in your throat.
- 35:53And I just collapsed your trachea. Yeah. You're not going to be breathing anymore.
- 35:58Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and he's, again, certainly a lot more believable
- 36:02than Swayze, you know, and again, as I said in the last podcast,
- 36:05I always liked Swayze, you know.
- 36:08Well, it wasn't, again, that's not Swayze's fault. Swayze just was taught,
- 36:12I just think this is the Dalton that I actually personally think Swayze would have liked.
- 36:17Well, he's more of a believable Dalton, let's just say, you know.
- 36:20Well, he's a super cooler.
- 36:23And the cool thing is, he's not a cooler, Jake Schiller. Yeah, he's not even a bouncer.
- 36:27He's a henchman. yeah well he's a he's
- 36:30a guy who's there ufc fighter yeah well
- 36:34he's a hired gun exactly he's just a bouncer yeah yeah
- 36:38i do like i do like actually har he's well known for his and the character is
- 36:43well known here for his ufc fighting and you know the infamous fight where he
- 36:47killed his friend or as opposed to the original where dalton's just like really
- 36:52well known the other side of it, thousands of miles away,
- 36:54we're being a bouncer? A bouncer? What?
- 36:58Since when was celebrity bouncers a thing?
- 37:02When the sheriff tells him, can you go to the boat? They have my daughter.
- 37:07Double crossed. Even I knew he was being double crossed. Yeah.
- 37:12I like, it's weird because there's an actor who's got a small part.
- 37:15He steals the boat from one of the cops.
- 37:17And that's Travis Radwinkel. And we all know him.
- 37:21He's your favorite character because we loved seeing him get it because he was
- 37:25so over the top in Friday the 13th, the remake.
- 37:29He was that yuppie prick. Yes. who was so, so just, just a vile character,
- 37:35but it's kind of a small part for it. There must've been a director's cut somewhere.
- 37:38We had more of a role. Possibly, yeah, possibly.
- 37:41This, this whole boat scene is so silly and over the top, especially when the
- 37:47sheriff's on the boat and he goes, you're looking very comfortable and Dalton's
- 37:50like, you look very comfortable for the fact they have your daughter.
- 37:53And he's like, they don't have my daughter. And then Ben's like,
- 37:56well, actually we do have your daughter. There he goes. Oh, double cross.
- 37:59And he's like, oh, double cross, he had a double cross.
- 38:01Yeah. I mean, this whole boat scene, you know, and all the action that follows
- 38:06it and stuff, it's pure sort of 80s, sort of 90s action.
- 38:10Well, that's what I'm saying. They're adding the 80s unbelievable action scenes to us.
- 38:16They're giving us Tango and Cash now here, you know, and that's cool.
- 38:20You know what? See, throughout this entire film, I was never once bored.
- 38:24Oh, no, not at all. Not at all. Well, in Bridgewater House, I wasn't either.
- 38:29Well, I mean, I wouldn't say bored, But I was getting a bit sort of,
- 38:32are you for real? I was rolling my eyes. Yeah. There's a difference. Yeah.
- 38:36At Roadhouse, you roll your eyes. This one, you're just glued to the TV.
- 38:39No, no, this was, I was not bored and I was, I have to say, I was,
- 38:44I found it very entertaining.
- 38:46This whole boat scene when the, when Dalton blows up the boat and the boat's
- 38:52sinking, just beautifully shot.
- 38:54There's a nice shot when he's fighting one of the henchmen in the water. Yes.
- 38:59And you have Ben I believe it was I can't remember who it was Has a boat and
- 39:05he's going to try to run over Dalton with the boat That's Knox I think Was that Knox?
- 39:11I think it's Knox but Ben's not going to put down somewhere as well Yeah but
- 39:15what Dalton does Is the boat's coming at him The guy he's fighting He puts his body as a shield
- 39:21And he smacks his head Again so well done and fast And blurred a little bit
- 39:26Yeah, so to get away with it. You can get away with it and say, ooh.
- 39:30Well, I'm not going to say stuff like this is going to happen in real life,
- 39:33but if it did, it would be quite blurred and happen pretty fast as well. You know? Yeah.
- 39:38Well, it puts you in the mix and you're in water.
- 39:41Like when Ben, the big chase scene, and Ben collides so over the top,
- 39:47collides with the boat that Ben's on, and he flies off the boat,
- 39:52lands on top and bounces under the little couch in the back of the boat. Yeah.
- 39:57And, but again, the way it's shot, you're like, oh, okay. I can see that happening
- 40:01now. Even though it's come on, he'd be dead.
- 40:04I was when Ben crashes his boat and flies on top of the roof. Oh yeah.
- 40:13On the roadhouse. It's complete. I was actually a bit sort of concerned because
- 40:17I thought that they weren't going to have the finale at the roadhouse.
- 40:19But you know, they do, they get their events like through flying boats and stuff, you know?
- 40:23Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, because he says, doesn't he say something,
- 40:26no one's going to have it, I'm going to, he deliberately wanted to crash into it or something.
- 40:30But he's an idiot not realizing that he's going to take himself out. Yeah.
- 40:37And now there's one line when McGregor shows up for the final showdown.
- 40:43McGregor finally does something I enjoy. What was that?
- 40:48Breaks the fucking neck of the annoying Ben. Yes.
- 40:52Although to be frank I would have preferred
- 40:55Ben to have a more over the top death you know maybe thrown into the crocodile
- 41:00as well but yes it was he was always going to get it in some shape or form but
- 41:06yes McGregor breaks his neck well he goes would you finally shut the fuck up or something,
- 41:13what does it take to shut you up and he's right would you ever shut the fuck up,
- 41:20But before Knox shows up There's a shot where.
- 41:25Gyllenhaal is on top, he's obviously standing, looking down at Ben and Ben's crawling to the bar.
- 41:32And there's a shot where Dalton rolls his eyes and he's like,
- 41:36oh, come on. He's like, stop.
- 41:39No, he's like, no, he's serious. He's like, I don't want to do this to you. Please stop. It's over.
- 41:45And he still doesn't because he's such a whiny, he just doesn't get it.
- 41:49And so obviously Knox takes him out of the picture.
- 41:52So, but that point, that's why I think Knox had to kill him because I don't
- 41:57think Dalton would have because he's so weak and Dalton would kill him in a second.
- 42:02He doesn't want to do it. So that's why Knox had to do it. Yes. Yeah.
- 42:06Well, I mean, they could have had it where, you know what I mean,
- 42:07where Dalton was left with no choice, but he had to kill him or something or,
- 42:11you know, or something stupid where he ended up fucking, you know,
- 42:15falling into the crocodile or something, you know.
- 42:17Well, of course, we already had that with the other bad guy earlier. So, yeah.
- 42:22I mean, yeah. Yeah, but I mean, I was quite happy for McGregor to take him out,
- 42:25but I would have liked it to have been more over the top, you know,
- 42:28like something like ripped his head off or something.
- 42:31Oh, now you're just going to. Oh, well, come on. I mean, like we're watching
- 42:35Conor McGregor here, like he's completely.
- 42:37Yeah, but now you're ripping his head. That's just getting stupid.
- 42:40That'd be stupid. You're ruining a pretty, it's pretty even. It's pretty even.
- 42:45No, it's not. It's not that bad. It's not, you're now going to a glorified violence
- 42:52for no reason. It wouldn't make any sense.
- 42:54But I'm just saying, it was just a bit too easy and quick for McGregor to break.
- 42:59That's the way it should have been. He didn't see it coming.
- 43:01And he hated the guy from day one. I think everybody did. What do you think about it?
- 43:07So the fight scene's really cool. Yes, it's very well done. And they're both
- 43:11fighting really well here and pretty much has Dalton.
- 43:15But I love how he just takes pieces of wood. And uses them. And just fucking starts stabbing them.
- 43:22And leaves them there.
- 43:25And then the sheriff says, get out of here. I'll cover you. I'll cover you. Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:32And he says goodbye. Leaves the money for them. Leaves the money.
- 43:37For Charlie and Stephen. Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:42And I'm sure he kept some for himself. Oh, well, to pay for his boss's fur anyway.
- 43:45You know? Sadly, we have to end with Conor McGregor's naked ass.
- 43:50Because he's still alive.
- 43:54If he comes back, they would have to probably address it. They have to bring
- 43:58him back. They need to kill him in the beginning.
- 44:03Do not bring him back for a full thumb. Maybe he could get his own spinoff film,
- 44:06you know, just all about him and his story. People won't see it.
- 44:10He's actually the one thing people don't like about this film.
- 44:13If he wasn't in this, this would have been way higher reviews than it's getting.
- 44:18He is the only problem I really have with this film. You say he is Alan Rickman, that's fine.
- 44:25But I am saying right now, if this, if he wasn't in it and you had a competent
- 44:30man, Man, a competent actor, even a fucking woman, a competent woman. What, Jake Boushey?
- 44:38You know, you just, you could have, Maggie Q, somebody cool like that even,
- 44:42somebody, but you didn't, you went for a USC fighter. Complete another madness. Doesn't work.
- 44:49Doesn't work. Doesn't work. But it's such a fun, well-directed,
- 44:54fast movies, the exact same length as the original Roadhouse.
- 44:58It's actually slightly, it's very slightly longer. It's, but it flies by.
- 45:03Yeah, but it feels shorter. Yeah.
- 45:05Yeah, exactly. no i think it
- 45:07is it is better than well both the original two and and like i say i mean,
- 45:13i enjoyed it i had an entertaining couple of hours we've never once bored as
- 45:18bonkers as conor mcgregor is in it it is what it is and you know his performance
- 45:23and yes it's completely like off the scale bonkers but you know what i mean
- 45:28bit of madness and these types of films never always he's entertained me.
- 45:33Yeah. He said he's a better actor than anyone else in it. So there you go.
- 45:36He's a scene stealer. So Gary Oldman, all the hard work you've done playing
- 45:41the good supporting role, bad guys, scene stealer you've always been.
- 45:45Conor McGregor's better. Trevor says Conor McGregor's better. He's a legend.
- 45:50And the acting world. There you go. Oh, wow.
- 45:55Yep. All right, guys. Our retrospective is doing pretty well here.
- 45:59So we're going to, it's time to dive in to a big one.
- 46:04Yes, that's right. It's time to talk Ali again.
- 46:09And we are going to dive into the Terminator franchise. We'll be back. We'll be back.
- 46:17Hasta la vista. We're doing all of them. We're doing every one of them.
- 46:21Because I'll tell you what, they're not as bad as people say. Black Sponge.
- 46:27Dark Fate is. I haven't seen Dark Fate yet. I think people need to see Dark Fate again.
- 46:32Really, the true sequel to the second one. But we'll dive into it.
- 46:35And that's our next one up.
- 46:37We might pepper in something, take a break in between and pep something in,
- 46:40in between if something, someone recommends something or we see something that
- 46:44we forgot, we like to revisit. visit, take a break from Artie for a bit.
- 46:49I know that's blasphemy for me saying that, but looking forward to it.
- 46:53I haven't watched the Terminator actually in Terminator 2 in years.
- 46:55I absolutely love the original. I'm a massive fan of the original.
- 46:59So we'll jump into that one next. We're going to wrap this one up, guys.
