- 0:16episode of the Christian we've podcast.
- 0:18Today's guest is a podcaster and radio host, all the way from
- 0:22Connecticut in New York and the United States.
- 0:25His name is build reverse key. Welcome to the show, Bill.
- 0:28How you doing? I'm doing good things for having
- 0:30me. Thank you for agreeing to do
- 0:32this. I'm just going to go jump
- 0:35straight into this actually because I'm quite fascinated.
- 0:38I had to kind of say, here's the thing that I do list is of the
- 0:41show, mine unnoticed but I have like a giant Stack of research
- 0:45notes for all my different guests and obviously I do these
- 0:49way in advance, right? So the last time I looked at
- 0:52this piece of paper was probably about a month ago so I'm kind of
- 0:55like you know, and trying to remember get my Freight in my
- 0:59mind back in the game source, so to speak.
- 1:02And the first thing I noticed when I was doing my research, is
- 1:05that you have a obviously a podcast, which isn't, you know,
- 1:08some mind-boggling thing. But you also have a radio show
- 1:13and I was like, huh? This is interesting because this
- 1:15is the first time I've interviewed someone who has a
- 1:18radio show and I'll be honest, I'm a little bit sort of
- 1:21confused by this concept so yeah like you're the host of this
- 1:25show it's called the way podcast and it also airs live on the
- 1:29radio in Connecticut in New York.
- 1:31So it's a local radio station over there so that what drove
- 1:36you to actually create a podcast version of the show and what
- 1:42topics do you normally discuss on the show?
- 1:44Sounds good. Yeah, first thing you have like
- 1:46a notebook there. That's like paper, some papers.
- 1:49Oh dude. Yeah.
- 1:50I mean this is a calendar. So okay, never explained this
- 1:54before. So I have like a physical
- 1:56calendar that I use as well as my phone calendar because I
- 2:01booked so many guests in and and other things as well, it's not
- 2:04just podcast, it's just things in general and because I never
- 2:08remember like I usually will all know that I have something to do
- 2:11on that day, but yeah, I just find it easier.
- 2:14That way the phone gives you the alert but having it in a
- 2:17physical calendar. I don't know.
- 2:18I'm old-fashioned, I like that. But the actual notes is
- 2:22interesting because when I started doing it I used to use
- 2:26it as like. Oh this is like the Bible, you
- 2:28know, I have to ask every single question and I'm lost without it
- 2:32but now I use it more as a guide you know I don't get too
- 2:35worried. If I don't ask all of the
- 2:36questions sometimes I don't you know really depends and also one
- 2:41thing I try to do which I would say most podcasts do this, not
- 2:46all. But you know, most of them do
- 2:49which is, if a guest starts talking about something that
- 2:52you've already got. Maybe two thirds of the way down
- 2:54in your questions. Let it roll.
- 2:56Just make a quiet marker to cross that off or maybe to sort
- 3:00of just, you know, allow that sort of questioning if you're
- 3:03not a meaning and ask all the questions that are related to
- 3:06that, because I've noticed and this is something that I wanted
- 3:11to eliminate straight away was not.
- 3:13What sort of going back and forth.
- 3:14So like if someone is in, you know, sort of a dialogue and
- 3:19there in that flat 20 minutes and you go.
- 3:21Okay, yeah, that's great. And then, let's go back to where
- 3:24we were 20 minutes ago. It's a bit annoying.
- 3:26I think, as a listener, you would be annoyed to hear that.
- 3:29I don't know. It would bug me.
- 3:30So that's just why I do that. Oh, definitely are some shows,
- 3:33were like, they'll go on this crazy tangent and I'm like,
- 3:36please ask about that. That sounds really interesting,
- 3:39and the host just brings out all the way back and it's like,
- 3:41you're gonna skip that the guy just In the plane that crashed
- 3:44three times or something like exactly exactly that.
- 3:47Nothing frustrates me more than when twin hosts do that.
- 3:50Like, I'm fully onboard with that, I'm always listening and
- 3:53thinking, right? What would the listener want to
- 3:56know about what would they want to hit that?
- 3:57Obviously, I'll be as a bit selfish, it's my podcast.
- 4:00I can ask what I want. So I will ask, you know what I'm
- 4:03interested in but I will try to think about.
- 4:06Maybe that would be interesting this probe that let's go a bit
- 4:09further there. Why?
- 4:10Why again, I don't know. Like I feel like that's probably
- 4:13Especially if you're doing an interview is probably the most
- 4:15important element of it is, is the inquisitive nature of it.
- 4:19So, yeah, and yeah, just going back to what we were saying
- 4:22that, that element of it is jarring.
- 4:24I think you had definitely with my show.
- 4:27That's the number one thing I had to pick up.
- 4:29I have a researcher who will give me like a nice set of
- 4:32research that I'll read through. Then I'll put my own little
- 4:35questions down, so I have them to ask but like, I don't know if
- 4:38you can see it, my nose just become like this chaotic sort of
- 4:42nest. All over the page like that's
- 4:46what my that's what my notes used to look like and also look
- 4:50like if I try to do, I don't know if I'm trying to do
- 4:54something and paired like I don't know when I was at
- 4:56University, that's how my notes would look like.
- 4:58Because it's like, you're trying to pay attention and do that,
- 5:00you can't do both. I mean, it's normally it's like
- 5:03you jot something down like or they'll be useful for Clips or
- 5:06that'll be no, remember that thing?
- 5:09Check out that thing. I don't know.
- 5:10Then when you look at it after it's just like what?
- 5:12I don't understand any of Of this, like, what the fuck?
- 5:16But as a show is going like, the bottom right is like, oh this
- 5:20topic in the top left this, and then I cross off and scribble,
- 5:23with arrows, and it looks like No One's Gonna Get this for
- 5:26reference, but it looks like the 17 album by tent, asean.
- 5:33Pitch, is that? That's your show.
- 5:37So yeah, you're the host of the way podcast and like I said
- 5:41before it's airing live on the radio in Connecticut in New York
- 5:45but yeah, I really want to know why you chose to do a podcast
- 5:49version of the show and what are the sort of main things that you
- 5:53tend to discuss on the show? Sounds good.
- 5:56So yeah. Well originally I went to a
- 5:59local radio station because I'm an engineer myself and I like
- 6:03the audio sound engineer. Mechanical.
- 6:06I'm actually trying to switch into sound like an audio
- 6:09engineering. Okay, so I'm in that process but
- 6:12because of this and like the show and how much I've come to
- 6:14enjoy it but with the radio I just want to learn the
- 6:17soundboard. I want to find the editing and
- 6:19maybe do some work for them, but then I decided to take a course
- 6:23with them. I get trained to go on the
- 6:25radio. So I start doing the radio and I
- 6:28said, well, I can easily plug a USB into one of these big
- 6:32computers. Take the file and upload for
- 6:34podcasting because Was like with music, no way, really listens to
- 6:39music on the radio. You just use Spotify or apple
- 6:43music or whatever. So streaming is sort of
- 6:45replacing the radio industry, you say that.
- 6:48But I mean, people driving that causal day and before you say it
- 6:54yes. Cause do have Bluetooth and
- 6:57stuff and you can obviously listen to your stuff in the car
- 6:59but not everyone wants to know, everyone has a need Spotify, you
- 7:03know, like I've been counting Is cause here in the UK where
- 7:07people just have the radio on whatever, they don't even think
- 7:09about it like D, do not think. Maybe there's still some value
- 7:13in radio. I mean, maybe it's different in
- 7:15the states. I don't know.
- 7:16But Yeah, so I guess I'm not tried this respect the radio
- 7:21industry because he's still. Does I still love them on the
- 7:24radio? I saw upload on the radio and
- 7:27people that are still listening from the radio for that reason
- 7:30you just said it's still popular and it's still it's going to
- 7:35remain for a while. I'm not worried about that
- 7:37audience going away but podcasting I think every year
- 7:40has gone up for like the past 10 years.
- 7:42This let's talk about a little bit about the format because
- 7:45obviously you said like or his or not You need to just, you
- 7:48know, I'm already doing this, maybe I'll use this and use it
- 7:52for a podcast and it's not, okay, but the rules are
- 7:54different because obviously a typical radio show tends to
- 7:59follow, you know, your standard format similar to a podcast.
- 8:02But, you know, maybe you have coolers in on the show.
- 8:05Maybe you have, you know, ad breaks all of these things.
- 8:07So, are you doing like a lot of editing to kind of make it into,
- 8:12you know, a podcast or is there no end editing involved, like
- 8:15talk to us about the format of Gonna turn that show then into
- 8:19something that you can use as a podcast.
- 8:22Yeah, definitely. So, first things first, send
- 8:25some as you can see on my studio right now, I'm actually right
- 8:29next to my bed in my bedroom saying that my boat, my crib,
- 8:35there you go. But the because since March, the
- 8:39studio has been closed because of covid, right?
- 8:42And even though I think you could put glass barrier between
- 8:45some of the microphones and they could make Work.
- 8:48They just chose not to so expensive covid.
- 8:52Keeping the place running or it could be that too.
- 8:56They did offer to ship equipment.
- 8:58Each post house or whatnot. Oh cool.
- 9:02But then you have to sort of sort of share and I didn't want
- 9:05to deal with the hassle so I just got my own stuff.
- 9:07But yeah, but for the studio, I guess it sounds different is
- 9:13before covid. I would are live like once I
- 9:16spoke into the microphone, there's a Seven second delay.
- 9:19And it would be right in the somebody's car wherever they
- 9:22have an antenna. And yeah, you could have callers
- 9:26call in the soundboard. Was a great tool.
- 9:29I could like maybe click some buttons, have some audio little
- 9:32Clips fly in and whatnot but now because of covid it's definitely
- 9:37become more podcast focused and then it airs on the radio too
- 9:41because it's dreaming. And for that reason is because
- 9:45now that I'm back in my place I edit every I'm able to critique
- 9:50maybe like clean up the audio. I'm a ver able to.
- 9:54Well I'm not able to swear now because before I could swear it
- 9:58was after 10:00, I could say whatever.
- 10:00Can I swear here? Yeah, I've already swollen so
- 10:04yeah, you can. Yeah I'm trying not to I'm
- 10:07trying my best because what I'm trying to do is, eventually I
- 10:10want this to get like, you know, sponsors and all that stuff, but
- 10:12it's like he's a lot harder than you think to not swear, even if
- 10:17it's just because I don't consider dropping the F-bomb.
- 10:19Really is swearing. Oh, trust me I know about a
- 10:23month ago. Little Sidetrack Gaia.
- 10:26I fucked up and lets us worst go through an episode.
- 10:29I was I was interviewing Ken Lewis who basically he says
- 10:34producer and he was telling a story about like Eminem coming
- 10:37in and obviously Eminence were so as he's telling the story,
- 10:41mentions those squares and I forgot to edit that out and they
- 10:44had a whole meeting for me. Ha ha.
- 10:48Disciplinary me in something right.
- 10:51It was and I walk in thinking, like, no, I at every episode,
- 10:54they don't have anything on me. I don't know why you thought I
- 10:56swore like, all right, pull up the three clips and they but
- 11:01each clip. Yeah.
- 11:03As like I'm doing my best to have a flat face with my hands
- 11:13covering my mouth. Like I don't know how to defend
- 11:17that. At, I'm sorry.
- 11:19It's always, you know, it's always puzzled me because when I
- 11:23was growing up as a kid, you know, I was into things like
- 11:25wrestling and and, and just, you know, late night TV, I don't
- 11:29know, I suppose it depends on your parents and stuff.
- 11:31But point is you get exposed to swearing a lot.
- 11:34Like we were already swearing when we were like seven
- 11:36eight-year-old kid. Like I learnt swearing not, for
- 11:38my parents, but from other kids in the playground, that
- 11:41obviously, I would hear my mom, swear once, in a blue moon.
- 11:44But like, anyway, that's where I really learned.
- 11:46Swear was like, In the playground and the reason I
- 11:49bring that up, it's like, it's always kind of fascinated me
- 11:53this concept of like, oh, we can't swear, we mustn't.
- 11:56Swear, you know, it's really important, like in the UK we
- 11:58have a thing called The Watershed, right?
- 12:00Which is basically just like you show certain programming after
- 12:05like 9:00 p.m. or 10 p.m. or something.
- 12:07So before then no swearing, that's going to be a copy.
- 12:10Anybody adult themes, blah, blah blah.
- 12:12Then after that go nuts have a party but I don't know.
- 12:17It was It's always kind of struck me as a little bit, maybe
- 12:21immature to even have that as a rule.
- 12:24Like okay I understand certain swear words like if you're
- 12:26dropping the sea bottom and it's like midday that's a bit rough
- 12:29like maybe avoid that but like you know they mean like and and
- 12:33also there's a lot of like deliberation over what counts as
- 12:35a swear word. So like you said like bitch in
- 12:39the England. I've heard that in daytime
- 12:41television and that's apparently.
- 12:43Okay. But drop the F-bomb and suddenly
- 12:45you're like Public Enemy. Number One.
- 12:47Understand that like definitely a mom, but I was watching Family
- 12:52Guy, when I was like 13 and even though, like, I lips words get
- 12:57bleeped out. They definitely say stuff that
- 13:00is much worse than swears. He was interested about that as
- 13:03well. Is that Family Guys edited a lot
- 13:06for the UK audience. So like that Family Guy is shown
- 13:09quite late at night like in the UK as like 11 p.m. or something,
- 13:13but they cut out loads of stuff because it wasn't until I got
- 13:16like the DVDs. Years later.
- 13:18And I heard them dropping like, the sea bottom and stuff as I.
- 13:21Whoa, I never heard this before, and it's like, yeah, they edit
- 13:24heavily for the English audience.
- 13:26And I just found that fascinating because I always
- 13:29took America as being the country that was like, I guess
- 13:33more sense that, you know, like for instance when you guys say
- 13:36like ass, that's a parent like a big deal, but here, I don't
- 13:40know, it's kind of funny and we say it differently as well as it
- 13:42ass instead, we even spell it differently as well.
- 13:45But whatever. Seminar in English like isn't
- 13:49arse? Yeah, that's what I mean when we
- 13:51say both but like we more often than not will say arse.
- 13:56Yeah. So anyway, as bring about to
- 14:03your podcast, so that what kind of topics are you?
- 14:07You sort of talking about on this show, generally what's it
- 14:09for. So it's just a radio but like
- 14:12was also conversations, like, yeah.
- 14:14So what I like to do is be In like three words, it's talking
- 14:19with experts, but basically I like to do a blend between 60
- 14:23Minutes or Joe Rogan where like people who are experts in their
- 14:26topic, I sit down and talk with them.
- 14:28So, for example, a journalist spent seven years in Colombia
- 14:32where you wrote a book on cocaine.
- 14:35So I had him. Come on the show to talk about
- 14:37what's cocaine like in Colombia or death row was a topic and
- 14:41inmate actually called in from death row for an episode.
- 14:43I talk to him. Oh wow.
- 14:46Yes, that was an interesting one and then woman was in the 2002.
- 14:50Finished women coup and talked about that, or even Ken Lewis
- 14:53producing music. So, as long as well, or even a
- 14:56flatter, their poo was an expert because he was on like, Netflix
- 14:59and stuff. And that's a different kind of
- 15:01expert, I think. But as long as you're an expert,
- 15:04I talk to the person. It's cool, it's cool.
- 15:08And what would you say some of the like major do's and do Nots
- 15:14of radio? Like it give us a bit of Of a
- 15:15like seminar on how to do a good radio show.
- 15:20Sounds good. It's very similar to podcasting
- 15:24is just like the service or how its listen to.
- 15:28But well, when you're in like the studio, I guess the big one
- 15:32is don't swear, but they have a dump button, it's called, so if
- 15:35you swear, you just press it. And somebody tuning in, we'll
- 15:38just here like seven seconds of Silence.
- 15:40That's the reason of that seven-second delay you go badly
- 15:45by And yeah, exactly. So like if I say a swear or make
- 15:49a mistake or my guest, does he has his own I'll be like click
- 15:53it click it right now, right now what that what and the why I
- 15:55told you about oh and I have seven seconds to get it done.
- 15:59Is there like a delay between what the audience at home is is
- 16:03hearing and then what's actually going on in the studio?
- 16:06Because I know there is with like television and a lot of the
- 16:09time that's done on purpose to eliminate that.
- 16:12So it gives the production team like a little bit of time to
- 16:15play. Live in case.
- 16:16There's something extremely happens, is it?
- 16:18Same with radio? Yeah, it's a seven-second delay.
- 16:21So like, when I'm speaking, maybe like another second, it
- 16:24takes to reach the car but the idea is seven seconds.
- 16:27Okay, cool, cool, cool. And yeah like aside from that is
- 16:32there any like things that you like really just shouldn't do
- 16:35with radio or like, particular things that you do to ensure
- 16:40that every time the show is as good as possible?
- 16:44Besides that, I have a lot of leeway.
- 16:47Basically, I can say whatever I want one thing that I like about
- 16:51the radio. A lot is because the studio.
- 16:53It's a lot more count. You're just sitting with the
- 16:56person the studio and you're able to talk about whatever or
- 16:59it's a lot more freestyle oriented but there's not really
- 17:04a dues or do not you basically allowed to say, at least with my
- 17:07station. You could literally say, like, I
- 17:12don't know if you could go, Team and say, like I'm gonna go shoot
- 17:14the president tomorrow, but I know I asked like an extreme
- 17:20that came to my head was after 10:00 able swear, say whatever
- 17:23you want. I was like, all right.
- 17:25What's the most extreme? I think of all right, I'm a
- 17:27white kid. Could I say the N bomb on the
- 17:29radio if I wanted to for whatever reason?
- 17:32And they said, yeah, really. Yeah, how was it Justified?
- 17:37That surely I mean I'm not going to do it, but they said, yeah,
- 17:42you can you get the freedom? You can clearly say that after
- 17:4510:00. Wow, that's interesting.
- 17:50Yeah, okay, I just wonder why I mean, it's still not okay to say
- 17:55that, who cares? If it's past 10:00 p.m., when I
- 17:57do always hit men in general? Is it like okay if we have a
- 18:04black guest on the show, for example, and he drops the n-bomb
- 18:07sort before 10 p.m. It's not, okay?
- 18:09But then after it's cool is that kind of went all like that judge
- 18:12is whether or not it'd be bleeped out or something.
- 18:16Like there's the FCC guidelines and once again to like hate
- 18:20speech or something, I think that's where like, then you
- 18:23can't say it. But if you're just saying a
- 18:25sentence and you just drop like that word, or it's still
- 18:29categorized as a swear word, like saying with the any
- 18:32derogatory term towards any other race or religion or
- 18:36something, you can still see it for that reason.
- 18:39Just when you start targeting saying like oh I hate those
- 18:41people or blah, blah, blah. That's where I have to check the
- 18:45guidelines. That's where you might get
- 18:47different interesting. Says more about intention rather
- 18:51than actual, just saying the word, which I think is more
- 18:55sensible. Anyway, because a word is just a
- 18:57word, but how you use it is obviously more important, you
- 19:01know what I mean? But anyway, do you tell us, what
- 19:06do you think of that? The key things that make a Good
- 19:09radio show. So not just your show but just
- 19:11in general. What would you say are the main
- 19:13things that make an excellent radio show.
- 19:16Yeah, so from like, my first episode like with everybody else
- 19:21is slowly changes a lot, you realize like what you're doing,
- 19:24right, what you're doing wrong. And the key thing I notice is
- 19:28like, basically effort, like, early on, it was all the
- 19:32research all. Well, there's still more
- 19:34research now, actually, but it's all like, let me ask these
- 19:38questions. Let me bring up these steps.
- 19:40These studies, this everything in formatted perfectly but
- 19:44people sort of just like to hear a conversation they it's not.
- 19:48It doesn't need to be to 60 Minutes.
- 19:50Like like every sentence is Extreme and important.
- 19:54It's very like that's why like nowadays I like the more Joe
- 19:57Rogan style where it's just talking to the person and
- 20:00they're still the research eyes. Now I'm uploading them on the
- 20:03each episode, on the website. So now I don't have to
- 20:07reference. I don't need to say the EPA.
- 20:09EPA says this percent, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 20:11What do you think about this? It's just oh, apparently, this
- 20:14is going on. What do you think about this?
- 20:16Or like just more laid back? Like, that's the best approach I
- 20:20would recommend. That's what I'm aiming for with
- 20:23mine. Like I Joe Rogan is one of my
- 20:25biggest Inspirations as well and when I look at like my show
- 20:28format and the structure and everything and I'm just
- 20:33fascinated how he's able to do that.
- 20:35I just sit in a room with a guy or woman and he knows exactly.
- 20:39Lee, you know what to talk about?
- 20:40And obviously, he's got a team like, you know, he's got a bunch
- 20:43of people and stuff but I wonder like does he have that?
- 20:47Does he look through like a bunch of research before he sits
- 20:49down with a person? Or is it just kind of like he
- 20:53skims over that? And then he just focuses on what
- 20:55he knows and he just makes a conversation you know let me
- 20:57because I like sometimes it does come across as very random.
- 21:01Obviously. Some of its purposeful.
- 21:03He's going to ask specific things and also let the guard.
- 21:06Sorry the guest kind of say what they want to say.
- 21:09As well, like he gives the floor so to speak and like I try to do
- 21:14the same with mine, but I feel like sometimes, if I wouldn't
- 21:17have just those initial questions in research beside me,
- 21:20I'd feel like a loss. And I as long as I roughly
- 21:23understood, I think I could probably make it work.
- 21:26But the only times I've ever done that have been with repeat
- 21:29guests alike, Friends of the show people.
- 21:31I know I have like chemistry woven and we can do something
- 21:35with but I never want to get caught out just you know just go
- 21:38ah. Be this time.
- 21:39I'll try it without research and then that's the episode where
- 21:42it's just like loads of our being a narang and not knowing
- 21:45what to say, you know, oh definitely.
- 21:48I feel the exact same way and I would Joe Rogan.
- 21:52You could make the argument that he's either the dumbest person
- 21:55or the smartest person ever. I say he's the smart.
- 21:58I think he's a genius but he does ask like some dumb stuff at
- 22:02times. You're like seems whatnot.
- 22:05I think he intends on his guests, you know, I feel like
- 22:08he's a chameleon. Ian, you know what I mean?
- 22:10He definitely that's why. I think he's like a real smart
- 22:13guy for that reason because he can sit down with like Alex
- 22:18Jones and like make sense there. But then you could sit down with
- 22:22a raucous Hiatus and like make sense there.
- 22:25Yeah, that's how she had very good point.
- 22:27I see, that's something I do as well.
- 22:29My show like, nope, perhaps not to the same extent.
- 22:32I'm still it's very early days on the show.
- 22:34I mean, I think we're like we're in the 80s now episode wise.
- 22:39But when I look like I'm a moron, but you're able to make
- 22:41this episode still sound good? Yeah, it would you mean sorry
- 22:45I'm a moron, but you can make this episode sound good still
- 22:48now you know, no more come on. Don't be like that.
- 22:51No, no. Like what I'm saying is that
- 22:52like every guest that you have in the show is different and
- 22:56there's a couple of things that I always look for that.
- 22:58I try to do. So like first and foremost, I
- 23:00want my guests to feel comfortable because if you feel
- 23:03comfortable you more inclined to speak and it's awkward, you're
- 23:06talking to a stranger. Someone you don't know, you
- 23:08don't know their Ender. You don't know what they're
- 23:09about, you know, you don't know what's going on and I kind of
- 23:13fully accept that people don't have the time to check out my
- 23:16show beforehand because I barely have the time to check out what
- 23:20other people are doing some too busy doing what I'm doing.
- 23:22You know. So I fully I fully get so I
- 23:25don't have long to kind of make that person feel comfortable and
- 23:28get like a conversation going, you know I mean it's something
- 23:31you have to do on the spot and and just hope you can charm the
- 23:34pants off them maybe but every single person you meet is so
- 23:38different. Some More introverted and yeah.
- 23:41Okay, they're doing stuff which is public, but that doesn't mean
- 23:43that you might not still be introverted.
- 23:46I mean, me, and real life. I'm fairly laid-back.
- 23:49I don't, I don't tend to start conversations much.
- 23:51I can easily have conversations I can do that.
- 23:54I'm happy to do that but I kind of prefer my own company, you
- 23:57know? But I know there's other people
- 23:58that are the life and soul of the party and, you know, I've
- 24:01had them on the show before and to get back to my point, what I
- 24:05tend to do is allow them to kind of just take take the Reigns as
- 24:10far as like just guiding the conversation in terms of just
- 24:13what they want to say. And all I really do is kind of
- 24:16make sure it doesn't go too far off Kilda and every now and
- 24:20again I might snap it back and be like, okay, back to this or
- 24:23like, maybe I'll ask a question, just to kind of throw their mind
- 24:26back in the game, you know, I mean, but it never really tends
- 24:29to go like that. Like, I feel like a lot of the
- 24:31time when people were doing these sorts of things, they're
- 24:33very sort of cognizant of what's going on and they kind of know
- 24:36the deal and, and, you know what I mean.
- 24:39It kind of works. I like to go long form with this
- 24:41anyway. So if it goes an hour, two
- 24:43hours, three hours, whatever. Like I'm still gonna have to
- 24:46clip it up and do some all that stuff with it later on, but the
- 24:49actual finished product. I want it to kind of sound.
- 24:53Yeah, natural, not too Jagged and as you said before, like,
- 24:58you know, that kind of conversational Vibe.
- 25:00I think that's, that's really important.
- 25:03Yeah, and one thing I love with like, as like getting better
- 25:06with the show early on, it would take me probably hours to like a
- 25:1110 episode because there were so many little like stutters so
- 25:14many little mistakes. So may like, ah, so I got crap
- 25:17out that uh I gotta prep our ever use, copy this copy
- 25:20paraphrase, blah blah blah even though like no way.
- 25:22Listen Sokka, first ones. Yeah.
- 25:25But nowadays it's just that's a concern of mine too if people
- 25:28actually bother to listen to the earlier episodes.
- 25:31I mean it's I think there's value in All of them.
- 25:33But sometimes when I listen back and I hear they're like lack of
- 25:39confidence, it's just like ah I could have done that so much
- 25:44better. Definitely, that's why the
- 25:50episode. I was like, bring up his, I
- 25:52talked to a guy on death row and I'm proud of that.
- 25:55But so but also was an early one.
- 25:58So I'm always cautious like tune into it but like should Do I do
- 26:03I want you to? I don't know how.
- 26:05Well, it way. I think it went great but like,
- 26:07it's still the same sort of, I don't know how smooth they went
- 26:10back then. How much prep did they give you
- 26:12before you did it? I don't know.
- 26:19It's a female like a, we got time to like research at this
- 26:23time. I had to do it all myself.
- 26:25And I mean now no, probably have like a good amount of time.
- 26:28I you should plan like a week ahead.
- 26:31Now, how did the conversation go generally?
- 26:35So yeah, it was a very sit down. It's interesting because he
- 26:40calls him from Death Rows to hear like the phone call you
- 26:43here. Like a sort of a what do you
- 26:45call those ones? Like a payphone style phone
- 26:47call. Oh, and about the 4-minute mark
- 26:52in, I like it. That's when it hit me that I was
- 26:55like talking to Ganda throat. Like it hit me, I got shocked
- 26:58and there's like 15 seconds of Silence where I'm just like like
- 27:03I can't even think of the next. Shin and luckily the guy then
- 27:07end up taking and like just start talking about the book and
- 27:10I was able to crop that out in the final release and the rest
- 27:13of the episode went great. He talks a lot of facts, he
- 27:17talks a lot about how the situation is and everything
- 27:20around it. There's a great episode but like
- 27:22that was still early on and still had that little.
- 27:27I mean, thank you for post-process editing.
- 27:29Put it like that. I think in those situations in
- 27:32particular it's like That's not, that's a time when you don't
- 27:36want to cut it, unless there's something extreme that you have
- 27:38to cut out. Like, I don't know, like my
- 27:40Approach towards editing, though, as always been like,
- 27:43just do it, if it's absolutely necessary.
- 27:46You know, I've had episodes where maybe the other person's
- 27:49internet was terrible and you have to cut out, like, genuine
- 27:52pieces of audio or video, or it's going for too long and it's
- 27:55like, okay, yeah. Did this is just someone waiting
- 27:58for the internet to get barreleye.
- 27:59No one wants to hear or see. But the same time as you say, if
- 28:03it's people going. I mean that's not true, but a
- 28:05conversation, isn't it? If I sitting here cracking a
- 28:08beer of you in real life? That's how it would be.
- 28:11You know, I'm not gonna you know I think the key thing I've
- 28:16learned throughout this time is like being prepared and having
- 28:21information that you you're winning to talk about with that
- 28:24person is enough. You don't have to worry about
- 28:27like constantly having something to say because real
- 28:30conversations aren't like that you know sometimes you even
- 28:32sitting you have silence and And obviously, you can't do that
- 28:36with a bug, guys, you have to keep it going but then that's
- 28:38what questions for, you know? And and like I like to kind of
- 28:42have a good understanding of my guests and their lives so that I
- 28:46know the sort of questions I'm going to ad-lib as well because
- 28:49I that's something I know I'm gonna do.
- 28:51I didn't used to do that before but that over time has become a
- 28:55thing and I'm sure you do it now more and more.
- 28:57Now once you get more confident specially on radio, I imagine
- 28:59it's something you just feel like, yeah, this should be good
- 29:02that sauce. This, you know, And that's why I
- 29:05like with the radio is I kind of got sort of thrown to the wolves
- 29:09in the sense that you're live after your training and whatnot.
- 29:14Your first episode is why so like, on a podcast, if you fuck
- 29:17up you can like, oh, clean it up or whatnot.
- 29:20On the radio is like you stutter.
- 29:22You make a mistake, you gotta keep going, you can't stop that
- 29:26actually leads me to my next question.
- 29:28So other than that, what are some of the other key
- 29:31differences between podcast and doing the radio?
- 29:34Ow. So yes.
- 29:38Like, that is freestyle. Swearing, you focus on.
- 29:45I don't know. I mean, it's very much the same.
- 29:47It's just the different medium. So like the radio, you got the
- 29:49studio and you're able to get more locals while assume.
- 29:54Well, that's why I like what podcasting you're able to Source
- 29:56stream with people across the country across the world.
- 29:58This is an example, and Besides that, I think it's just very
- 30:03similar, she's a different kind of medium.
- 30:08So like other than some of the things you've already
- 30:10highlighted, what some of these some of your of a kind of like
- 30:14best moments doing this radio show.
- 30:18The favorite moments, maybe sounds good.
- 30:25Let me actually see cuz sometimes I forget.
- 30:27So like my favorite, well, I have a few favorites, but a
- 30:32recent one was called a hatless hacker by talk to this guy
- 30:36Alberto, Daniel Hill and he was in Uruguay and he was the first
- 30:40hacker to be sent to prison. And basically, he had this whole
- 30:44crazy story for people to listen.
- 30:47Listen to the darknet Diaries. He was actually one of those
- 30:49episodes and he was just such a great guy to talk to and I'm
- 30:53still messaging it. I'm still in contact with them
- 30:56to this day. Awesome.
- 30:59So proud of that. Okay, let me do me.
- 31:01A lot of people through food is doing this radio show.
- 31:04Then yeah. I mean, I meet the people
- 31:11through the radio station but a lot of the people I meet to
- 31:14appear on the show or like social media like social media
- 31:17by far is an amazing tool for this industry.
- 31:21But people are also very excited to be on the radio because the
- 31:24radio still does get a lot with since and I still for that
- 31:28reason. When I talk to a guest they're
- 31:30always very excited to see. Oh when does the air, what's the
- 31:33station? And how tell them Wednesday
- 31:3691.7? Because as the podcast is
- 31:39growing, the radio still is my still my leading category of
- 31:43like what my show is. And now I've spoken about some
- 31:48of your favorite moments. Well, some of the worst moments
- 31:51on the show things that you want to forget about, but we're going
- 31:54to remind you because ye content, yes, I was great.
- 32:02So I guess a different one was. I didn't interview with the.
- 32:07She used to be a sex worker. And now she, she's like a
- 32:11leading Advocate to legalize it. J.
- 32:14And that episode. Yeah, it was a good episode is
- 32:18she'll, but sometimes no matter what you do, you're not on the
- 32:21same level with people. And that whole episode just felt
- 32:25kind of off. Like I want to go in One
- 32:28Direction that she goes in the other and then I make a joke,
- 32:31but we're on. We don't have the same kind of
- 32:32style of comedy and it's also like the episode is good but it
- 32:38also not just felt something or oh no I didn't offend or
- 32:42anything. It was just I guess awkward is
- 32:44the best way to put it. Is there any other moments to
- 32:49stick out for you? Or is that is that the worst of
- 32:51the Heap? I'll say oh Look into a little I
- 32:57think that's the worst. I am.
- 33:00I'm in a join my show besides there.
- 33:01And like the death row freezing up for like a mini cuz like
- 33:06shocked. I think those are the words.
- 33:08I have been so far lucky, I guess that's not see.
- 33:13That's that's that's that's pretty pretty straightforward.
- 33:16I do have one actually it was a great episode that was gonna
- 33:21about guy who toured America and wrote a book and what About was
- 33:27a conservation efforts, but then an audio issue happened.
- 33:31And I lost that episode. I'm still really upset about
- 33:34that. Oh, no, yeah, - devastating is a
- 33:42whole like our, it ton of research behind it went great.
- 33:45I was very happy with that one, too.
- 33:48Oh my God. Got loads of questions now.
- 33:51Well, firstly, I'm sorry to hear that.
- 33:53Like, I've had a sip. I had asked.
- 33:56Care one time where it was my mistake, about a couple of
- 34:00times, there's been audio issues, because what I do is I
- 34:03record with zoom, and I also record with a separate program,
- 34:08right? And I found that's a good,
- 34:10that's the best way, because if the zoom fails, hey, no worries,
- 34:13got this back up and in future, I want to do even more backups
- 34:16just to because I'm OCD like that.
- 34:18And I just think it's it's better to have backups and you
- 34:22know things go A bit slower but you've got that raw file then.
- 34:25Yeah. To lose it and then just have
- 34:27nothing. So, I've had some heart attacks
- 34:30with that but ah, okay. So talk us through like when
- 34:36this happens. So obviously, you're devastated.
- 34:38But like, how is it for the guests?
- 34:40Like knowing that, you know, that whole hour was just wasted.
- 34:46Yeah, first thing I'm going to need to ask you like what?
- 34:49That backup is after because I need my own backup.
- 34:53Oh, I see, I got you soooo good and And I can just, I can just
- 34:58say it now actually. Yeah.
- 34:59Sorry sorry. It's sir program called mix pad.
- 35:05It's by a company called NCH software.
- 35:08So you guys you guys should sponsor me because I'm giving
- 35:11you a free plug here but they have a they have a host of
- 35:15different things and they were recommended to me by a French
- 35:19out to trial by fire. Erin, you're awesome and Wise,
- 35:23It's a games developer here. Recommended that.
- 35:26You use a program called videopad because I was using
- 35:29Sony Vegas, like some Noob and wondering why everything was
- 35:33just terrible and taking forever.
- 35:35And the reason why is because it sucks.
- 35:38So I started using this program called wave.
- 35:42No, hang on. What was it videopad?
- 35:44That's right. And there's a like I said
- 35:46there's like a host or a suite of different programs and mix
- 35:50pad is one of them and it's essentially just audio recording
- 35:54software. I use it for everything.
- 35:56Thing, like voice acting podcast and you name it.
- 35:59It's a really good tool. And one of the biggest things is
- 36:03it gives you several tracks, which is not like a big deal.
- 36:06I mean, you could do the same with like audacity but like,
- 36:09sometimes you need those extra things.
- 36:11You know what I mean? Like, for me, especially when I
- 36:13started editing, and have to cut stuff out and really go that
- 36:17extra mile because you do, you do need to do that with podcast
- 36:20and people think, are you just plug in and play?
- 36:22And that's it, right? But no, if you want to do it
- 36:25properly, Lee as a whole bunch of stuff, like when I finish
- 36:28this afterwards, there'll be loads of editing to do, you
- 36:31know, a couple of hours, maybe more and then that's just the
- 36:34edit. Then there's the scheduling and
- 36:36everything else that's involved. I mean, that's yeah, whatever.
- 36:40But I digress, what did I write? Guessing is kind of like a
- 36:46second job, but I forgot to. Oh no, wow!
- 36:50Yes. It was your failed show where
- 36:52you lost the audio. How was it for the guests?
- 36:55Yeah. I reached out, I like apologize.
- 36:59I was like, oh, I'm so sorry. Absolutely, I hate this mistake.
- 37:03They have been ancient. You want to come back on the
- 37:05show and rerecord, but I never got response.
- 37:08So, I guess not. See, I would say, yes, I would
- 37:14I'd be annoyed if it were me. I'd be annoyed, but I would say
- 37:17yes, because publicity's publicity June and I mean, if
- 37:21someone's reaching out to you giving you publicity, I mean, go
- 37:24for it, take it generate. Radio station called out to me
- 37:27and said, hey, we messed up your audio but we still want to have
- 37:30you on the show? I'll be like, hell, yeah.
- 37:32I need, I need to plot. I mean, maybe this person
- 37:34doesn't need to pluck. I don't know.
- 37:36But I don't think, I think generally take advantage of it.
- 37:39You know, people are interested in.
- 37:40You just go with it. Yeah, I was hoping maybe you'd
- 37:45even see the email, I don't know.
- 37:46But yeah, it's unfortunate and I was so far ahead like
- 37:50schedule-wise where I could finally relax.
- 37:53Not worry too much about future gas, but that's like Yep,
- 37:56there's a whole week's episode back and I'm only two weeks
- 37:59ahead now. So like when you don't have
- 38:02guests on the show, what are you tending to talk about that?
- 38:04What the standard things like, what's the, what's the size?
- 38:07You just you talking and you just kind of, it's just a talk
- 38:11show with just yourself or, you know, what, what's the setup
- 38:14like? I pretty much only hit every
- 38:18weeks, just so guess. So the show is yeah.
- 38:21It's just like constant guests each week as the show when the
- 38:25studio open. I want to start doing like radio
- 38:27only specials where like I'll just invite friends and talk
- 38:31about what not like, conversational one.
- 38:33But for now each week it's just a new guest new topic and then
- 38:37the next week. So when this actual radio shows
- 38:41been listed as one of the top 10, listen to radio stations in
- 38:46the whole of Connecticut, which is pretty awesome.
- 38:49So, how did you actually know a better question would be are to
- 38:52ask you is what did this award actually mean to you?
- 38:56You and like how large is your listener base?
- 39:00Yeah, I am. I mean, I joined it when it was
- 39:04top 10 is like right towards the end, but still top 10.
- 39:07Hey, stay can take it, baby. Take, take the recognition.
- 39:09You were part of the journey, go for it.
- 39:13So I hope I'm helping it grow and it's just great.
- 39:17Because like, now I'm getting a poster done like a 3x5 one
- 39:22where, like, I'll stand with a friend of mine and on a corner,
- 39:25handing out, flyers and the station is wh U s--.
- 39:28So I put like a nice Little slab on the poster like hey look at
- 39:32that. Is it just?
- 39:34Is it generic poster of like two guys like this?
- 39:38Like some light? I don't know. 86 conversation.
- 39:43I'll be fine. That's a good idea but it's just
- 39:45the logo Way by guest:look samples and it's very clean.
- 39:49Like it. I worked on the I use canva.com
- 39:53and she's like a very keen minimalist.
- 39:55Yeah, I'm a big fan of it. But it's definitely great and
- 39:59it's just like yeah it it definitely makes the whole show
- 40:03feel better and perform better to Butler because asking before
- 40:08like how how large is the listener base like how many
- 40:10people can you expect to be listening on Earth?
- 40:12This a weekly basis? I forget.
- 40:16But I think like maybe average like thousand, maybe that's a
- 40:20lot. That's like, yeah, I think like,
- 40:23that's like maybe the average. I mean, different times at
- 40:26different. Well, let's see, how many
- 40:28people, how many people live in Connecticut?
- 40:32I'm actually curious to now, for those who don't know.
- 40:34So, Connecticut, as I understand is a major city in an area
- 40:41called Greenwich, which is in New York, look, no New Jersey,
- 40:45all right? Yeah, we're surrounded by
- 40:48Massachusetts New York and New Jersey a little bit.
- 40:52We're nice little state in New England and the population is
- 40:563.5 million goddamn. That's just like, 1,500. 1,600
- 41:02is the average, but it's been a while since I checked.
- 41:04So like how long is this radio station?
- 41:07So Bingo, this radio show. Been being on the air for this
- 41:11one. Beer and a half two years.
- 41:13Now, that's about a year and a half two years.
- 41:16Yeah, that's pretty good to, to build a following of the least
- 41:199,000 people listening every week for, you know, relatively
- 41:23new radio show. Yeah.
- 41:26And I'm happy about that too, because they help with the
- 41:28station, and my time was different.
- 41:30But now, I'm like, new slots and whatnot, but it's a because,
- 41:35like the guest definitely help, like, the guess our my show.
- 41:39So, like, once I show that it helped with the station,
- 41:41definitely And you got locked out from the station as far as I
- 41:46promotion and stuff. Yeah, I finished little clip.
- 41:51It's like a little 30 second clip of slicing.
- 41:54What this show is would like some music, an audio and I don't
- 41:57know when it basically. Just there's constantly every
- 42:00random points in the week and it'll say, tune in Wednesday is
- 42:035:00. And so that's there's that
- 42:07they're paying for that poster, like I said, and just little
- 42:10things like that. So like, What do you use or Draw
- 42:15inspiration from as far as the sella radio?
- 42:19Hosts radio shows that I will what's inspiring you and
- 42:23motivating you? Yes I am.
- 42:31I've talked to a lot of people of a lot of backgrounds and
- 42:35everybody has but I've also like Talk to like a lot.
- 42:39Lot would like a lot of like moving join different groups and
- 42:41whatnot and all this stuff and like multiple jobs and stuff.
- 42:45And I just met interesting people that I think are well for
- 42:50example like just working at a stop and shop at one point, this
- 42:53guy had like the longest coma in Connecticut and I just thought
- 42:58that's like, wow because the interesting thing and I really
- 43:01enjoyed hearing the guys story and I've always found that when
- 43:05I'm talking to people other people tend to talk More and
- 43:09very considerations where it's like, well I just met this guy.
- 43:11Many going just told me his whole life story.
- 43:13Great. It's funny how like some people
- 43:16are willing to do that. Maybe they just they just want
- 43:18someone to listen. Yeah, pretty much.
- 43:22And I always enjoy listening though, and always loved looking
- 43:25up random Wikipedia articles or like random Blow YouTube videos
- 43:29and love learning little stuff like delving into it.
- 43:33So I enjoy like talking to people, I love learning stuff,
- 43:37so I sort of use my podcast in a way.
- 43:40It's not so much like it's a show and I love airing it.
- 43:44But I also do love doing the show because I love talking to
- 43:47these people and learning these things.
- 43:49Like I use like the Venezuela coup.
- 43:51As an example, like I do love wearing a little bit of history
- 43:53or a few philosophy episodes, like I just really love learning
- 43:57this stuff. So I'm like, alright sweet.
- 43:58Here's a guy wants a tool but here's like a way for me to do
- 44:04what I enjoy. Like how many episodes into the
- 44:07Podcast version. Are we talking now?
- 44:10How many do you have 35? Just aired and I'm recording 39
- 44:17to night? I think so.
- 44:18Okay, yeah. All right.
- 44:21Yeah. So we getting fully in.
- 44:22What's the response been like so far online?
- 44:26It's been good. Some few people like my message
- 44:32in from the radio saying like, oh, I really liked this episode.
- 44:37I only heard the end. Where can I find the whole
- 44:40episode? And it's like, oh, great that
- 44:43shows interest. So then I'll try to direct words
- 44:45the podcast that we can see the whole thing.
- 44:47And I'm so, like, responses, like that on Joy, L podcast,
- 44:51getting some nice refuse or whatnot, but I feel like a few
- 44:55of them are other podcasts try. Like, Plug or something, I don't
- 44:57know. But overall I'm getting good
- 44:59responses. Good emails and I'm happy with
- 45:01the show. Yeah.
- 45:03I just want to say on the side, do I hate that like if anyone
- 45:05ever who comments on my posts, I get it on like Tick-Tock and
- 45:11Instagram places out that they're like, oh hey, yeah, if
- 45:14you like this, why don't you check out this and it's like I'm
- 45:16never going to check out your thing because you're promoting
- 45:19on my thing. Like if you want me to check out
- 45:22your staff, email me privately. Or message me privately and say
- 45:28hey Christian, nice to meet you. Make a conversation with me,
- 45:32Give Me A Reason, establish a connection because that's
- 45:35another things are so many people get in contact with me
- 45:37like, hey, check this out. I'll give you a really good
- 45:39example, sry, just a quick ride because this annoys me there was
- 45:42a guy who contacted me the other day, right?
- 45:45And if you're listening to this, I hope you're listening to this
- 45:47because, you know, I'd be, but I kept it professional.
- 45:51So is the typical kind of promotional thing like our, hey
- 45:55yeah, we can give you a promotion.
- 45:56All services blah, blah blah blah.
- 45:58And I'm like, hey, you know, right now I'm not in a sort of
- 46:01financial situation to be able to accept that but thank you for
- 46:04your offer, all the best to you and I thought that would be the
- 46:07end of it and he's like the word for word.
- 46:09This is what the guy says, he's like.
- 46:11Well, at least follow this page and this page and I just
- 46:15literally just said, why Why, why should I you didn't like
- 46:23trying to make me feel bad? Like, oh, at least do this.
- 46:25If you're not gonna give me money, at least.
- 46:27Do this. How about at least, fuck off?
- 46:32At least, fuck off a little bit. How about that?
- 46:34Just, you know, the audacity of and here's the thing, there are
- 46:39so many people in the world right now.
- 46:43Content, creators podcast is, right?
- 46:45Because like, we've been given this time, you know, I'm here is
- 46:48because some say it is a blessing.
- 46:50I see it as a blessing. I've I've chosen to use this
- 46:52time to wipe my ass off and really, finally do everything
- 46:56that I wanted to do and just actually give it a go, you know,
- 46:59actually try and make it a reality for myself.
- 47:02And you know what? It feels like, it might be going
- 47:05somewhere, there's some positivity, I'm seeing in the
- 47:08community more and more people are joining getting positive
- 47:10reviews for the podcast, blah, blah, blah, blah blah, right?
- 47:14But one thing I know that doesn't ever work is like when
- 47:17you try to kind of almost like a beg people to check you out both
- 47:23in real life and on social media like people don't care.
- 47:26People only care. When they hear about you, when
- 47:28other people say you got to check this guy out.
- 47:31You got to check this woman out. There are amazing like when
- 47:34people start doing that I'm sure it's the same with your radio
- 47:37show. A lot of people, I'm sure come
- 47:40across the radio show because someone else is our yeah you got
- 47:42to check out this show on. On this radio network is
- 47:45awesome, you know, because that's what most people go
- 47:47through is recommendations from other people, right?
- 47:50It's rare that you just stumble across things.
- 47:52It does happen, but it's rare and a lot of the time that's the
- 47:57case. Like what I make sure is that
- 47:59every single podcast, every single video, every single live
- 48:02stream that I do has an element of consistency.
- 48:04You always getting roughly the same thing, even if it's
- 48:08different every time and therefore you know what, to
- 48:11expect every time and you know what you're signing up for.
- 48:13For as well. That should be the
- 48:15advertisement. Not me telling you.
- 48:17Hey check me out. Hey, please subscribe.
- 48:19That's not the advertisement. That's, that's a nice reminder,
- 48:23sure. But that shouldn't be your
- 48:25advertisement in differently. No, that's definitely accurate.
- 48:31Like, right off the bat. When, if you message people
- 48:33saying, hey, on Twitter, I see all the time.
- 48:35Like, hey, look at my pockets. Look at my podcast.
- 48:37It's like no, you're an advertisement.
- 48:39People don't like ads. When I'm watching showing an ad
- 48:42comes on, I go on the Room. Do you know?
- 48:44That's a really good point. I've never thought about as
- 48:47well. Yeah.
- 48:47Like We always tend to avoid ads, that's why we have ad
- 48:54blocker on YouTube. It's, you know, it's annoying.
- 48:56When you see an ad, it's annoying.
- 48:57It's like if anything, it makes you hate that thing like it and,
- 49:02and that's unfortunate. But, that's the reality.
- 49:04So yeah, if you see unsolicited messages constantly in your
- 49:08feed, it's like why do you care about this?
- 49:10Like, it makes you angry towards that thing.
- 49:13And, you know, the way I always, I try to kind of relax things,
- 49:18you know, I'll always plug. You video where possible but I
- 49:22don't plug everything, you know what I mean?
- 49:24Because it's just too much and to my own audiences.
- 49:27Watch too much. Like I've noticed subscribers
- 49:32fall off some of my YouTube channels because of this because
- 49:36I was posting too much and is fair enough, I would find that
- 49:38annoying. I mean, you do have options.
- 49:40You can turn off notifications and stuff, but still like,
- 49:44people don't think that far ahead, you know, if they've, if
- 49:46they've gone to the sort of the trouble of checking you out
- 49:49following you, Whatever, that's a big deal.
- 49:51So if you then abuse that by just inundating them was crap,
- 49:56it's just going to put them off. And they're not going to want to
- 49:59be a part of that, and you're sort of out doing all of your
- 50:03work, you know, because just getting someone on board.
- 50:05That's a huge achievement. Yeah.
- 50:08It's like a tough tightrope to walk because you still want,
- 50:11plug yourself like me. I just use my website the end
- 50:14instead of everything because you still want people to 8.
- 50:18Check me out, but you don't, To do that, for that reason.
- 50:21What I use now or my go-to is, I upload my stuff, the N.
- 50:27But since I have guess, I never even asked them like, hey, plug
- 50:30it yourself. It's just, hey, I'm going to
- 50:32upload on my stuff and if they upload it themselves, I am
- 50:37extremely happy because it's like what you said.
- 50:39It's that like somebody, you know, telling you, hey, check
- 50:42out this podcast. Like when the person from the
- 50:45show, says, Hey, I was on this show.
- 50:47It tells Their audience. Yo, check out this Podcast.
- 50:52And like I've said this on the show before.
- 50:54So I'll make this quick, but like, even people in my own
- 50:57network people, I'm friends with fellow content creators.
- 51:00Like, you have to understand. If you are a content creator of
- 51:04some description, you're busy doing stuff, creating maybe not
- 51:11even create may be doing other stuff in your life.
- 51:13If someone sends you a video, it's like, okay, what do you
- 51:17want me to do with this? Like, I know you want me to Get
- 51:21out but it's like you didn't ask me you didn't say like okay if
- 51:25one of my friends would say, hey Christian would you mind
- 51:29checking this out man? I really want like your thoughts
- 51:32on this or like hey would you mind checking out this?
- 51:36I'd really like you to be a part of this.
- 51:38If someone says that I'm going to be more inclined to go check
- 51:42them out and I want to help them bout because I know they helped
- 51:45me out and it's there's that personal connection there.
- 51:48But if it's just, hey, uploaded a new video.
- 51:50Geo. Hey, got a live stick.
- 51:52Like there's a guy in my in my network he does this and I've
- 51:55spoken about it before I've never mentioned him by name
- 51:57because it's some professional and I wouldn't want to shame him
- 52:00like that but he knows who he is and he's done it several times
- 52:05in my messages and it's like, dude.
- 52:07I'm not going to check out your street.
- 52:09I'm not going to check out your video because you just you just
- 52:12post it at me like like you just as his expectation that I'm
- 52:15going to check it out. It's like what do you think?
- 52:17I just sit around doing nothing all day.
- 52:20Like oh Balboa nothing better to do.
- 52:22So I know I have got to stop. There are better things to do,
- 52:24no offense but like it did not to be like unless you turn
- 52:28around to me and you then there's that nice because and
- 52:31the here's the thing as well. Some people won't think I'm
- 52:33being a dick here in like, by saying that.
- 52:35But it's like I would expect the same.
- 52:38Do you know what I mean? Like, if I would just post a
- 52:40video to you and I would just be like, hey, check it out.
- 52:43I would expect you not to check it out because I've not been
- 52:45polite or given you a reason to care.
- 52:48Whereas, if I you know create that Personal connection that
- 52:51personal message. I mean, I don't expect them to
- 52:54check it out, but I think there's a better chance that
- 52:56they will, and it's more of a friendly gesture.
- 53:00And here's the thing, you can't abuse that either, you got to
- 53:02save that for that special occasions.
- 53:05You know what I mean? Like, if someone truly wants to
- 53:07consume all of your content, they'll subscribe.
- 53:10They'll follow you though. Join your desk or whatever, but
- 53:13a lot of time, you know, people just check out a couple of
- 53:16things here and there. And, you know, I sometimes try
- 53:19to do, I try to drop in. Randomly unannounced and I'll
- 53:22drop in a friends live stream or are you know, like then there's
- 53:26a guy shout out to Buck mr. Cole.
- 53:28He's a friend of mine, fellow content create.
- 53:29He does a thing on Instagram where he raps freestyles.
- 53:33Really cool, right? And every now and again I'll
- 53:35drop in his stream and I'll just like message him like silly
- 53:39stuff to get him to wrap and it's fun and it makes it really
- 53:42good and enjoyable and people have a good time.
- 53:44Right. And but I don't do that all the
- 53:48time. I do it once in a while.
- 53:49You know. I mean if I got Five minutes.
- 53:51I see his stream and I'll go check it out.
- 53:53And that's the reality. Like, when you're that busy.
- 53:56It's, you know, you don't often have those moments where you
- 53:59just sit in on your phone, not doing anything.
- 54:00Like, oh yeah, cool. I check it out.
- 54:02I do, you know what I mean? Oh yeah. 100%.
- 54:06And like those are plugs. You were saying earlier where
- 54:08it's like, oh can I have some improvement or something?
- 54:11I agree. But then I also see a ton of
- 54:13people say that as like episode 1 2 or 3.
- 54:18And like when I first started, I had the biggest urge Like sort
- 54:21of go everywhere, like, oh my God, like I like, because
- 54:24you're, it's like all exciting to you, but the heart, you give
- 54:28it some time, and then do that. But like, what you were saying
- 54:32with the the like, well basically, I had this guy my
- 54:37show. I think I mentioned them earlier
- 54:38Ken Lewis, he for people don't know.
- 54:42He has 103 gold and platinum records now, he's a producer.
- 54:46He's worked for like Eminem, Jay-Z Kanye West, all that stuff
- 54:50in He said like he's like huge like compared to me he's like
- 54:55Beyond he's like I don't know what's a good singer.
- 54:58I'm like one inch off the ground he's like five miles off the
- 55:01ground like that. He but he says he gets so many
- 55:09Twitter. So my Instagram.
- 55:10So my like message is a people just say, hey check out my
- 55:13mixtape. He's a producer.
- 55:15They want him to listen and he's like no if you say check out my
- 55:18mixtape, I'm not gonna Count your mixtape just cause you plug
- 55:22it. Whatever.
- 55:23I'm not going to do that. I want you to either like grow,
- 55:27like prove yourself in some way or something, but I am so busy
- 55:33making all these making these songs all this stuff.
- 55:35I don't have time to plug in your half hour, mix tape, or
- 55:39whatever. Yeah, you know it's it's
- 55:42stupidity. I hate to be mean to those
- 55:44people but like you're not thinking enough, you know, it's
- 55:48like it. I've message some of my favorite
- 55:50content. Creators but like really super
- 55:52famous people, right? And I never expect a response
- 55:55back because they're too busy to read.
- 55:57But what some random English guys messages from Bumfuck,
- 56:01nowhere, who has like, less than however many follow?
- 56:04Like, who the fuck am I? Why should they care?
- 56:07Like, I mean, they're too busy doing their stuff and I, even if
- 56:11I was super successful at their level, I still wouldn't expect a
- 56:15response if I don't, if I don't know them.
- 56:17Do you know what I mean? Like and that's the thing that I
- 56:18do as well is unless I know Someone I've met them, I don't
- 56:23tend to respond, you know, I mean like, the only exception
- 56:28I'll make is if I've seen that someone is a regular follower of
- 56:32mine. Like, I do this on Instagram
- 56:34sometimes, right? When you get someone who's been
- 56:36in quite a few live streams, their comment a lot that they're
- 56:38clearly part of the community, then I'll follow them back and,
- 56:42you know, I might sort of message them now and again, but,
- 56:46It's something that I know can change as well because I think
- 56:50at this level, when you're still growing, you're able to do that
- 56:53one day. I'm just not going to have the
- 56:55time to do that because it's things will grow, things will
- 56:58expand, you know, we'll have a big following and then, you know
- 57:02what I mean? Like, it will actually be
- 57:03impossible, not just because of the time element, but because
- 57:06you have so many, as you said you, he gets like thousands and
- 57:09thousands of messages a day, right?
- 57:11Like what is he going to like look through like all 100,000 of
- 57:14a cusp buddy. Not like, you know, Happy
- 57:16Madness. Even if he's an employer PA to
- 57:19sort that out, they still wouldn't have enough time to do
- 57:22that, because it's just an inevitable kind of
- 57:25ever-increasing thing. Yeah, there's only like so few
- 57:29up at like that top level where he is, and you're talking like
- 57:32whole country and maybe other countries trying to like
- 57:35message. So, I'm sure he gets so many.
- 57:37He told me a story like one time he was like, walking through a
- 57:40New York and these people were on the corner trying to sell
- 57:44like a rap album. And he was like, all right, you
- 57:47know what, let me um, give me that I won't tell you who you
- 57:50are. I mean so I won't tell you who I
- 57:52am, but I think you should give me that album and the guys like,
- 57:56no, it's a three bucks or five bucks.
- 57:58Oh yeah, yeah, that dude like that's one of the time he's
- 58:05going to take one and whoever was handing those out completely
- 58:08blew his chance right there. Joe, that's amazing.
- 58:12You know, I've met those sorts of people in Hollywood.
- 58:15I was in Hollywood. Time and they're very forceful.
- 58:19Like I remember we were just tourists walking past and they
- 58:21were like fully like you need to buy this.
- 58:23You need to buy this and it's like dude fuck off.
- 58:26Like I don't want to buy you a shitty album that you made for
- 58:29like less than a dollar that you're shoving in my face.
- 58:34Like working your sales pitch, my friend, the why do I need to
- 58:40buy this? But no, lemon listen, listen I
- 58:43know everyone's got to make a living and like If you're out on
- 58:47the street, trying to, you know, I've been there, I've done that.
- 58:49I, you know, I was in a metal band for three years or
- 58:52something and, you know, we would try and get people to buy
- 58:55our albums, but here's the thing.
- 58:58I didn't shove it in people's faces on street corners.
- 59:01People that I know probably aren't gonna buy it right.
- 59:03You think about these things? Okay, we booked a metal show,
- 59:07right? So there's going to be people
- 59:08that like to listen to metal music.
- 59:10The paid to see the show. So, set up a merch store, have
- 59:13your stuff there, that makes sense.
- 59:16Those people are likely to buy that not Joe, you know, mama and
- 59:20papa walking on the street in the middle of the daylight in.
- 59:23I don't know, California. Like they're just there to have
- 59:26a nice day. They don't want.
- 59:27To be hounded by you, you know, and like that.
- 59:31That's a good example as well like they say.
- 59:33I mean, obviously, they had no idea who that guy was.
- 59:35But like, if you're, if you're selling records for three to
- 59:40five pounds on the street, right, and someone says what you
- 59:45just laid out, I would just, I would just give it for free.
- 59:48I would give freebies now. And again, you know what I mean?
- 59:52- well yeah, yeah. I like it.
- 59:54How does it really affect you like the, the, I mean, I
- 59:56remember. Even when I made my Records back
- 59:58in the day. It didn't cost that much to
- 1:00:00create like because once you've initially created the records,
- 1:00:04then it's just reproduction and that you I mean you could do
- 1:00:06that yourself a relatively cheap.
- 1:00:07I mean most people listening to this podcast, won't know what
- 1:00:10this is if they are younger generation, but that's what
- 1:00:13burning CDs is, like, I mean, that's where that comes from.
- 1:00:18And that's free that whatever their last, huh?
- 1:00:22Wow. Rough way, He should, he should
- 1:00:28take it one step further and told them who he was afterwards.
- 1:00:32That would have been amazing. You just reminded me.
- 1:00:35He when he walked away he said you guys know, Kanye West they
- 1:00:40said yeah he's like yeah I produced for him.
- 1:00:44Wow, he did. Yeah, how did they react, you
- 1:00:47know how they reacted? I don't know.
- 1:00:49I think just kept walking. I okay, I don't know.
- 1:00:52I made like a joke right after. I'm like, man, I'd be on my
- 1:00:54knees. Like, no.
- 1:00:55Take the CD, like, fucking holding it up.
- 1:00:58Like, it's a sacred thing. Please don't know how they
- 1:01:02reacted, but like they better, they probably were kicking
- 1:01:06themselves. I'll say that even that.
- 1:01:08Oh, they probably thought he was just like some crazy dude, lol.
- 1:01:12Yeah, whatever. I bet there is that And it's
- 1:01:14selfish sure that it's because that's the weird thing as well,
- 1:01:16like, about people in that position, It's like because I
- 1:01:20you get people like that in the UK and it's like their whole
- 1:01:24ideologies are were an unknown band.
- 1:01:26We've really got to push us up, but the thing is, when you're
- 1:01:28unknown, here's the deal, like, no one cares about you.
- 1:01:34Right? And what I mean, is, okay, that
- 1:01:35sounds like a really obvious thing to say, but like I get
- 1:01:39comments now and again, from people who say to me, wow, Like
- 1:01:44I can't believe you had have such a small following, like you
- 1:01:47do really good content and this isn't me going on, guys and
- 1:01:49they're great. I'm getting comments like that.
- 1:01:51That the reason that I'm bringing that up is that I know
- 1:01:55why that's the cat. And this is my response to these
- 1:01:57people is, well, I'm a nobody, right?
- 1:01:59And the first thing, you look at, when you discover a new
- 1:02:02content creator, is you look at how many followers they got.
- 1:02:05Generally speaking, not always. Now, I don't care.
- 1:02:08Like, I subscribe to people all the time that don't have a lot
- 1:02:11of fun. Lois, I found some really
- 1:02:15amazing content creators recently and they've got like,
- 1:02:17less followers than me, but they're amazing.
- 1:02:19And I'm like, wow, I hit the jackpot because when I talk to
- 1:02:22these people better respond. So it's a win for me.
- 1:02:25But most people don't think that way.
- 1:02:26Most people are like, meh, whatever like who's this guy,
- 1:02:30right? But that's the thing.
- 1:02:32Once you start progressing and you get to certain levels
- 1:02:35suddenly that begins to change ever so slowly.
- 1:02:39So, like if you take YouTube as an example, I reckon when you've
- 1:02:43got, like, maybe like 10K, something like that.
- 1:02:46Like you're starting to progress like you people will probably
- 1:02:49more than likely subscribe to check out a few videos before
- 1:02:53they leave, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:55Like what I see as a kind of a trend on my channel is people
- 1:03:00quite often or check out one video and then check out like
- 1:03:03six other videos and then leave right.
- 1:03:05I just think that's really funny but it's cool.
- 1:03:08I like that because it's that says to me, okay, people were
- 1:03:10taking notice because, you know, maybe two years ago Wasn't doing
- 1:03:14that. So, it's a, it's, there's levels
- 1:03:16to these, it's in this thing. And I think that a lot of people
- 1:03:20forget that they don't, they don't think about that.
- 1:03:23And they just get too fixated on numbers.
- 1:03:26And as we know, I mean, it takes so very little to change things.
- 1:03:32I mean, in the world of content creating as far as video is
- 1:03:34concerned. All it takes is one video.
- 1:03:36But in terms of podcasting and and the radio, I mean, all it
- 1:03:40takes is that one guest, you know, that one interview You,
- 1:03:44you know, that one moment and like boom sky's the limit after
- 1:03:48that? Yeah, it's true.
- 1:03:50And there's definitely like some gas that like make a wicked
- 1:03:54difference. I've had some episodes go up
- 1:03:56then the next episode, it's like an episode.
- 1:03:59I think people would like, goes right down, I'm like, wait what?
- 1:04:03That's what is it just like that topic?
- 1:04:05That's yeah, that's why I always aim for the consistency element
- 1:04:10because I have the same thing. But like what I tend to do with
- 1:04:15every episode of the podcast that going in is I tried to have
- 1:04:18zero Expectations, I just go into it thinking, okay, focus on
- 1:04:22making this consistent and focus on making this as good as it
- 1:04:27possibly can be, you know what I mean?
- 1:04:29So if there's difficulties, even if you noticing them during the
- 1:04:32course of the podcast, don't think about it.
- 1:04:34Just focus on the goal and normally that works.
- 1:04:38And you know what? Like then it's just subjective,
- 1:04:41isn't it? You know, people listening will
- 1:04:43find different things. Like sometimes people tell me
- 1:04:45like, oh I really enjoyed this episode of I'm like huh.
- 1:04:49I wasn't maybe I wasn't as keen on that episode.
- 1:04:51Like, you know, I didn't really feel like it was my best one and
- 1:04:53then one that I'm really proud of there's like, no one.
- 1:04:57No one cares says is interesting.
- 1:04:58I don't know. It's yeah.
- 1:05:00Oh yeah, it's just it's just different opinions.
- 1:05:02I guess than that. Definitely from an example for
- 1:05:05me is like, I didn't happen. So don a plastic and like, it's
- 1:05:09pollution effects. And that's an episode that I
- 1:05:12think is a important deal. I like it and that's it very
- 1:05:17well. I was completely surprised.
- 1:05:19And then like my my recent one shot is on China.
- 1:05:24And that's a, I think it went a great episode.
- 1:05:27I expected to perform very well and so far.
- 1:05:31It's growing like not as well as like the episode before that the
- 1:05:34one before that. I'm like, why is that have you
- 1:05:38also noticed as well? Like, I find this a lot
- 1:05:40especially when I do like stuff for Tick-Tock or sometimes even
- 1:05:44YouTubers. Well, I can't make a video and
- 1:05:46I'll put very little effort. I'm like, whatever.
- 1:05:50I got an idea, I'll put it at that.
- 1:05:52I'll make it good. You know, I have the nose from
- 1:05:54nail and all the everything it needs.
- 1:05:56But like I don't put a lot of effort in and that's the video.
- 1:06:00Like I'll give you an example, right?
- 1:06:01My my best performing video on Tick-Tock right now which has
- 1:06:06gotten me like over 1,000 fall out like a so went before this I
- 1:06:10had I don't know, maybe like 150 followers or something right and
- 1:06:14then this one video has blown its got.
- 1:06:16Like I think about EK views 630,000, basically and the the
- 1:06:24follower count keeps going up because interestingly, yeah,
- 1:06:26when a lot of people are actually watching your video on
- 1:06:29a platform like that, they just randomly follow which I guess
- 1:06:32makes sense but it's just like that's interesting but literally
- 1:06:35the quality of the video is shit like it.
- 1:06:38It's a clip from a longer video. So the actual video was like,
- 1:06:43maybe ten minute video that I uploaded to my second channel,
- 1:06:46right? And it was just exposing a scam
- 1:06:48in The UK. So, most of the video was shot
- 1:06:51like this facing me and then there's a point where because I
- 1:06:54don't, you know, I just use literally a handheld camcorder
- 1:06:58from like 7 or 8 years ago. It's it's low budget stuff.
- 1:07:03Yeah, you work with what you have anyway when it came to
- 1:07:07actually show it because the scam was on a mobile phone,
- 1:07:10right? So I had to show the message and
- 1:07:13I thought about different ways I could do this.
- 1:07:14Like I know I can maybe I probably should have done it.
- 1:07:18You know, this is the reason I did it.
- 1:07:20So normally I would just put screenshots within the video,
- 1:07:24right? But because I needed to interact
- 1:07:26with this text in the links, that's why I filmed it like
- 1:07:30that. So it looks like crap and when I
- 1:07:32uploaded the clip onto Tick-Tock, I I cut it.
- 1:07:36So it's just the bit where I'm looking at the phone and
- 1:07:38explaining it and that's what I uploaded to tick tock.
- 1:07:41And as you may or may not know, like you only get like a minute
- 1:07:44to work with, so I just uploaded that and that's the video that
- 1:07:47does. Well, What the fuck zero effort
- 1:07:54in that? Like obviously, yeah, there was
- 1:07:56effort, like filming that video but it wasn't that difficult but
- 1:07:59mostly I was just talking about. It wasn't even really giving
- 1:08:02much of an opinion. I was like huh lol?
- 1:08:04This isnt this obviously a scam. Ha ha ha end of video.
- 1:08:09You want to go to your audience can be like what's wrong with
- 1:08:12you people? We just I don't get it and it's,
- 1:08:16I mean, it's not always that way.
- 1:08:17Some of the other clips that have done, well have been
- 1:08:20Controversial clips from podcast, which that makes sense
- 1:08:23at least, because it's okay. Gets people talking.
- 1:08:25People have a massive argument in the comments, great my
- 1:08:28interactions up. I don't care by the way, to the
- 1:08:31bank, but that, but it makes sense.
- 1:08:33I'd like logically. But when it's poor quality
- 1:08:37stuff, like I said before, always put the effort in, but it
- 1:08:41still doesn't change the fact that like no effort has gone
- 1:08:44into this, whereas everything else.
- 1:08:45I do music comedy, skits acting, whatever that That that I
- 1:08:50actually prepare and put effort in and then it just gets like a
- 1:08:54few views, you know, one or two of them might pop off, but most
- 1:08:58of them don't, and it's just like, I don't understand this at
- 1:09:02all, but keep trying, I guess. I guess it's like the substance
- 1:09:08in a way, but you got pick like, the right substance like, that
- 1:09:12was the right substance. But I saw this podcast.
- 1:09:15It's the I can't sleep podcast and basically the guy reads,
- 1:09:19like Wikipedia articles to help people fall asleep.
- 1:09:22Like, it's supposed to be so boring, they fall asleep some
- 1:09:26days, but it, yeah. And it's like good substance.
- 1:09:29Like he's reading interesting stuff, but it's like that point
- 1:09:32where it's so like, narrow or so.
- 1:09:36Interesting quotation marks that it puts people to sleep.
- 1:09:43And that's dangerous as well because like for some people it
- 1:09:46might actually be interested see why they might have the adverse
- 1:09:49effect and you get like really intrigued and you sit there like
- 1:09:52two hours into this Wikipedia thing.
- 1:09:53Wanting to know what's next like yeah tell me more about that.
- 1:09:56Serial killer. Oh my God.
- 1:09:58My the geopolitical situation and Israel I don't know.
- 1:10:04Like the interesting stuff now Sun's Rising.
- 1:10:08As you look out the window be like ah shit I got work in our.
- 1:10:11I did it again. And God damn it anyway.
- 1:10:16Move it on. What do you think of someone
- 1:10:19like the secrets to being A good radio show host.
- 1:10:27Yeah. So, like we said, Joe Rogan
- 1:10:32before, and I like to use him as an example, because yeah, he's
- 1:10:35podcast, but he's still very good at what he does and I watch
- 1:10:39the video to, like, take notes on what makes it special and why
- 1:10:43what do I want to apply for like the radio show.
- 1:10:46And it's sort of a combination of I like to, I like to speak
- 1:10:51very fast. Like, in public settings, I like
- 1:10:53speak very fast and I like going on a general direction and like,
- 1:10:56but then I'll slow down and whatnot.
- 1:10:58So, Big step is just slowing your voice and making sure every
- 1:11:03word is heard. And then you go deeper and say,
- 1:11:06make sure like the power words are emphasized.
- 1:11:08I never worried about that too much, but it's more.
- 1:11:11You have to slow yourself down. Get the point across clear
- 1:11:15verses like in everyday life, people want to speak
- 1:11:18sporadically and a big challenge to is, you got my hands like
- 1:11:23just below the camera so you don't see as much but I move my
- 1:11:28hands crazy like I come from. Italian family.
- 1:11:31So, when I'm speaking, I'm literally acting like my whole
- 1:11:36like, if I point an arrow, I actually do like The Arrow
- 1:11:38motion and everything, but people tuning in, they don't see
- 1:11:43that I do. So I don't know why it's
- 1:11:47interesting because I don't think my parents do that.
- 1:11:50But like, yeah, I don't, especially like, I don't know,
- 1:11:53sometimes I feel like it's a weird, like, intellectual
- 1:11:55flexor. Be sitting out armchair like,
- 1:11:57you know, it's like this and I did and then I retracted Sighs
- 1:12:00what I'm doing and I'm like, you don't like a twat.
- 1:12:02What you do there's like you're not consciously aware because
- 1:12:06you just, you know. Yeah, yeah, I go into me, throw
- 1:12:09this episode. I see you moving your hands too.
- 1:12:11And I'm like, oh, he does that to give, at least, at least in
- 1:12:15your culture. That makes sense.
- 1:12:17Dude. I mean why, I'm just some
- 1:12:19British guy like, you know, my family from what I understand.
- 1:12:23Historically, didn't go anywhere and I've got I think I've got
- 1:12:25some French and Irish blood on my dad's side.
- 1:12:28But other than that, Being stayed in England.
- 1:12:30Never did anything. What?
- 1:12:34But I don't know. I have a fascination with
- 1:12:35traveling and going to different countries and living abroad.
- 1:12:38So that's how I'm different, I guess, but whatever.
- 1:12:42Anyways, the saying about me, that's why one of my big goals
- 1:12:47is to have the podcast, give me enough money.
- 1:12:49That I could literally, like, go to Europe, maybe interview a
- 1:12:52guest there something. But like basically be able to
- 1:12:55move wherever I want because podcasting yeah there's like a
- 1:12:58studio But doesn't require you to be in one space so I want to
- 1:13:02be able to go to Germany, Italy, Japan like whatever country.
- 1:13:08So you're looking to kind of set up your own thing, then your own
- 1:13:11sort of traveling podcast but it's time to think that would be
- 1:13:14interesting. It was still be the same theme
- 1:13:18but it could be like cool segments or something.
- 1:13:19Like just I want to be able to travel it.
- 1:13:23Just like you said, it seems very interesting.
- 1:13:26Cool dude. Cool, cool, cool.
- 1:13:27And what advice? Ice, could you give to people
- 1:13:32that want to get into radio and podcasting?
- 1:13:35Yeah, so do it. That's true.
- 1:13:40That's true. I see so many people like, who
- 1:13:46love watching those motivational YouTube videos, or these
- 1:13:49motivational stories, and so many, it's podcasting.
- 1:13:53But like, in every Dynamic, people are always saying, check
- 1:13:56it out, my new streaming station, or my Or a new podcast,
- 1:14:01all this stuff I'm doing this, I'm doing all this stuff in the
- 1:14:05second. You say you're doing something
- 1:14:07or like basically that's when you lose like you have to do it
- 1:14:13because when you say you've done something, you get that
- 1:14:15satisfaction that you've already done it even though you haven't,
- 1:14:18you've only taken like the first step.
- 1:14:21Oh, I know what you mean? Yeah.
- 1:14:22When you first start out. Yeah.
- 1:14:25Now you're right. You're right.
- 1:14:26I know what you mean? I know what you mean.
- 1:14:28Yeah. That's because you You sort of
- 1:14:30touched on that before, when you said like, oh, when people reach
- 1:14:33out, and they've only got like a couple of episodes behind their
- 1:14:36belt, and it's like, it's kind of a pointless time to ask is
- 1:14:38because I've said this before, in the show, like when I hear
- 1:14:41like someone setting up a podcast and I know the type of
- 1:14:44person they are. Yeah.
- 1:14:46Not necessarily said they won't stick with it, but it's like a
- 1:14:49podcast, is a lot of work and commitment and it's like I mean
- 1:14:53I remember when I first set mine up, I done a podcast before with
- 1:14:56a couple of friends and we Ended it prematurely unfortunately,
- 1:15:01but I still wanted to go and I've been thinking about doing a
- 1:15:04podcast for a long time but I don't know.
- 1:15:06I don't have an idea that no, will it be good?
- 1:15:09Bubba bubba and eventually I just went for that matter of
- 1:15:13just all that idea that I should just do it and then just see
- 1:15:17what happens. But maybe just keep it as like a
- 1:15:20discussion / because it really, which is gonna be a discussion
- 1:15:24podcast where I just spoke at length on a topic like I do in
- 1:15:27my Vlogs and yeah. Once in a blue moon, I still do
- 1:15:31that, but I think the money if you like, is in doing interviews
- 1:15:35and talking to people, I feel like most comfortable people
- 1:15:38seem to enjoy it more as well. So I've just kind of run with
- 1:15:41it, but I don't think I really found my footing with this
- 1:15:45podcast until maybe 20 or 30 episodes in, to be honest.
- 1:15:50And like, I feel like it's always constantly, you're always
- 1:15:54constantly learning and growing. And, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:56And you always look back at like the past 50, they like, Huh.
- 1:16:01Now, I feel like now is the best time because before I didn't
- 1:16:04know what I was doing and I'm sure in 50 episodes for now I
- 1:16:07say the same thing then you know, it's an interesting thing.
- 1:16:12Yeah, definitely, I keep seeing that a lot with them groups
- 1:16:15where they'll make a podcast but then some people aren't
- 1:16:19interested. But one person still really
- 1:16:21enjoys it. So they'll like keep the show
- 1:16:24going but the rest sort of don't want to do it anymore.
- 1:16:26Yeah. Like it always kind of scares me
- 1:16:29when People reach out to me if they want me to appear on the
- 1:16:33show and it's literally just a group of people chatting.
- 1:16:36Like that's my idea of a nightmare.
- 1:16:38That's not a podcast. I'm sorry, like, I know some of
- 1:16:41you have done it and made it work and fair play to you, like
- 1:16:44some of them that I've been on. They actually have segments and
- 1:16:47they cut it up and it's good and it works.
- 1:16:49But I've heard so many it's just literally like that.
- 1:16:53One over one guy said to me like, oh yeah, we like to just
- 1:16:56record our conversations and put it online and on I'm like, why?
- 1:17:01Like like you need to hat? Like the whole point of a
- 1:17:04podcast is the listener needs to be able to follow some sort of
- 1:17:08narrative, you know. It's like when you listen to an
- 1:17:10audiobook you know, there's a story, you know, you listen to a
- 1:17:14song, There's an eventual ending, you know where it's
- 1:17:16going. You know?
- 1:17:17I mean like if you just have a conversation that you've
- 1:17:20uploaded and every time it's a conversation, I mean you run
- 1:17:24into so many problems like that, aggravating problem.
- 1:17:27We spoke about earlier of, you know, return To an issue, maybe
- 1:17:30an hour after you've already spoken about it or you know what
- 1:17:33I mean? Like forgetting stuff or I don't
- 1:17:36know whatever. Like there's so many issues
- 1:17:38would not just having that basic structure.
- 1:17:40Like, you can still, don't get me wrong, you can still have
- 1:17:42like mates in a room having a laugh but it's going to be mates
- 1:17:47in the room. Having a laugh with a bit of
- 1:17:48structure that you work with. At least one person is taking
- 1:17:53control of the situation and guiding it.
- 1:17:55You have to have that you can't call it a podcast.
- 1:17:58Otherwise Oh absolutely 100% or else like and then people will
- 1:18:04hit like that brick while ago, right?
- 1:18:06But year in the group setting for the podcast and you got
- 1:18:09nothing to talk about. So it's so how was your day?
- 1:18:12It was good man. I drove to the gas station.
- 1:18:14Wow. And then you're in your car
- 1:18:16listening to and you're like who defy?
- 1:18:18That's okay. Yeah.
- 1:18:20It's like I don't want to know about the fact that you drop
- 1:18:23your keys and the cashier looked at you funny and like you know
- 1:18:26you filled your gas tank half and I like who the fuck cares?
- 1:18:29Is tell me something. Interesting.
- 1:18:31Tell me how, I don't know. The cashier told you to go fuck
- 1:18:35yourself. That's interesting.
- 1:18:36I want to hear that. Like you want to hear something
- 1:18:38over brakes? You're not like, you don't want
- 1:18:40to hear the norm because you're living the norm.
- 1:18:42He was like the taste you away from the norm and makes you
- 1:18:45think. Oh yeah, life can be
- 1:18:47interesting. Sometimes you want something
- 1:18:51that sucks you in. Not the boring everyday.
- 1:18:55You want something to escape from that every day to listen to
- 1:18:58something unique, you know? The irony with that, as well as
- 1:19:01most things start out. Like that.
- 1:19:02I'm sure that's how podcast probably starting to beginning.
- 1:19:04I remember, that's how Twitter started in the beginning.
- 1:19:07Do you remember when Twitter started doing for?
- 1:19:10That was like a little bit but I think I liked a little bit more
- 1:19:14because then you have to see those celebrities thoughts.
- 1:19:17Do you want now very beginning do like the very I'm talking
- 1:19:20before the celebs even gone there when it was like,
- 1:19:22literally just started, it was people fucking going like oh
- 1:19:26yeah, I had some Weetabix today. Oh, Mike might go outside.
- 1:19:33Now I had packet crisps that was that was the extent of the
- 1:19:37tweets. That was this.
- 1:19:41It's like Paris, Hilton ate some crisps.
- 1:19:43I'll grate Fantan, bloody tastic.
- 1:19:46Why do I care about that? But they never Got Hijacked in.
- 1:19:50It changed in it then it became more what it is today.
- 1:19:53So I'm glad I log into Twitter today, I feel like that's a kind
- 1:19:58of modern face. Facebook.
- 1:20:00I don't use Facebook. I feel like that's a lot today,
- 1:20:03like, oh my dog went for a walk today or picture of your bowl of
- 1:20:07cereal or something. Yeah, I fight.
- 1:20:10I've got mixed feelings about Facebook, because I only use it
- 1:20:12because of family, some friends. And then, to be honest, content,
- 1:20:18creating actually I say this much if If I wasn't doing this
- 1:20:28or no, if I could get a management team to like, manage
- 1:20:33my account, I would never use Facebook again.
- 1:20:37I would, I don't know, I'd figure out what, because I've
- 1:20:39still been trying to figure out a way of like, making my
- 1:20:41account. I don't know.
- 1:20:42My account already has the highest priorities privacy
- 1:20:45settings imaginable, but I barely use Facebook like my
- 1:20:48actual profile. Like I interact in some groups
- 1:20:52and stuff but like, It's mostly just meme stuff to them in like
- 1:20:55now, and again. But like ultimately, yeah, I
- 1:20:57don't really use it. Like, who uses Facebook anymore?
- 1:21:01Like, like you say, people when they're like 50s and sharing
- 1:21:03pictures of their kids and dogs and shit, and it's like, okay
- 1:21:06great, I'm glad you're happy. But most people I'm really
- 1:21:10because it's not really, got much interesting stuff.
- 1:21:12And now people are starting to use it as basis for fact, like
- 1:21:16they get their news from their nest, egg ologies, that's
- 1:21:19deadly. That's that's the beginning of
- 1:21:22the end of civilization right there.
- 1:21:28But you are really. You write about Twitter though
- 1:21:30so it is become. I mean, Twitter still has a
- 1:21:33bunch of crap on that, don't get me wrong but it's, I feel like
- 1:21:37when something is going on in the world, like Twitter's the
- 1:21:40first to know about it, like Jim and I mean, I don't know, it
- 1:21:43just say, I hope I am. I different uses for like
- 1:21:47Facebook. I lost my password like three
- 1:21:49years ago and I haven't bothered to get that back.
- 1:21:52Yeah, for the show. I literally met Facebook.
- 1:21:55And that was it. I don't even use it.
- 1:21:57Twitter, Instagram and Reddit. I love for either each reason
- 1:22:02like Instagram, I say, up-to-date social with friends
- 1:22:06and family, what not? It's cool.
- 1:22:08You get interesting posts of what's going on description.
- 1:22:11Twitter is like where I get my news.
- 1:22:15Well and read it but Twitter you get your news from like, what's
- 1:22:19going on with like say this sports team or this celebrity
- 1:22:22you get to see their tags, what they upload while read it is
- 1:22:26like just sort of let there's the news feed that love.
- 1:22:30That's my favorite for news. I wish everyone would get their
- 1:22:32news from there because I'm ready.
- 1:22:34Yeah, it sounds crazy. But when you look at the, it's
- 1:22:37nothing but articles. So you see like the guardian or
- 1:22:40even New York Times or even New York pose like you see the
- 1:22:44different sides? You know I agree with you that
- 1:22:46actually cuz a lot of time with read it, you get sort of what
- 1:22:50Karma points, bonus points more Prestige if you actually post a
- 1:22:55legitimate Source. Whereas if you just post any old
- 1:22:58crap, people call you out for it.
- 1:22:59So yeah, I agree with you that I think there's some effort.
- 1:23:03Yeah. And I suppose it depends where
- 1:23:05you are on read it because there's a lot of toxicity or
- 1:23:07minute, but then there's a lot of sources on there and useful
- 1:23:11subreddits for news and history and culture.
- 1:23:15Sure and stuff. So very, very because the rape
- 1:23:18the right ones like they have to be get fact-checked.
- 1:23:21Like, they have to be good news sources and even like the
- 1:23:25majority like I'm among the majority where I'll see a
- 1:23:27headline. And I'm like, I don't want to
- 1:23:30read a whole article right now, but I love a top.
- 1:23:33Comment will be like, Snippets from the article taking out the
- 1:23:36most important detail tldr tldr. That's what it is.
- 1:23:40Yeah, exactly. What's that stand for again?
- 1:23:43I forget too long, didn't read? Yep.
- 1:23:47It's to know what is so true as well?
- 1:23:49Because a lot of the time when you do read those articles like
- 1:23:52legitimately you don't like that article could have been a
- 1:23:56paragraph, but they choose to fluff it up because they have to
- 1:23:59justify their payroll and they're paying their jobs and
- 1:24:02stuff, but it's like, that didn't need to be 1,200 words.
- 1:24:05It's just the, you know, the news, it's the journalists.
- 1:24:10You know, having fun with their ego.
- 1:24:12Like yeah, I'm a writer, you know, I write passionate stop,
- 1:24:18you know, it's like it's rare that it's like, you need to read
- 1:24:21or 1200 words of it like sometimes.
- 1:24:24But rarely most of the time. Yeah.
- 1:24:26It could just be a quick. Here's our son.
- 1:24:30So I'm like capture me. But yeah, lava is fluff.
- 1:24:33Like, all right, if we put two more paragraphs now, we can
- 1:24:35squeeze another ad and maybe two more.
- 1:24:38We can squeeze in another law, add right there.
- 1:24:40It's money. That's the real reason they do.
- 1:24:42Yeah, that's why I love ready because the tlb are like is
- 1:24:47perfect. It literally gives you the bulk
- 1:24:48Bill throwing like the stats and then I walk away with like a
- 1:24:52decent understanding. So that's why I wish everybody
- 1:24:55would get on it. But the only generation tends
- 1:24:58like Facebook and that has a history of not being accurate,
- 1:25:04put like that, Facebook annoys me anyway, like, I had to
- 1:25:08account before. For my current was so my account
- 1:25:11before was my like original I made in like I don't know.
- 1:25:162009-present tends to another and I deleted it because I
- 1:25:20wanted to delete it and then they just never deleted it.
- 1:25:23And I've since message Facebook saying like hey can you please
- 1:25:26delete this? I don't use it anymore and I
- 1:25:29haven't done for the past 11 years and they still won't
- 1:25:32delete it. And it's like Fuck.
- 1:25:35Like why I try to keep like their numbers up like oh we have
- 1:25:38this many profiles as well. Yes, I know my stupid.
- 1:25:46I want delete mine. The problem is, like I said, I
- 1:25:49don't know, my password and then I enter the email.
- 1:25:52What is my password? And I don't even know my email.
- 1:25:56Yeah, but I do yeah, that profiles up probably run by some
- 1:26:00brush and Bot tweeting some, posting some crazy article,
- 1:26:04conspiracy theories, and I'll have no idea.
- 1:26:07Bill, you just gotta look like a crazy man in the pit of my
- 1:26:11friends. Are you saying all these things
- 1:26:13on Facebook? What's wrong with you?
- 1:26:15All my friends around, like all my old high school friends were
- 1:26:18look at him and be like, she's what happened to this kid.
- 1:26:21Holy shit. He felt the beep and maybe it
- 1:26:26for. Do you have any sort of jobs
- 1:26:28outside of broadcasting or you is, is this just your film
- 1:26:31career? Now, I wish it was my fault.
- 1:26:34My career now, I own. I'm in the process of looking
- 1:26:36for a mechanical engineer job. Oh, that's right.
- 1:26:40Yeah. Sorry said in the beginning?
- 1:26:41Yeah, cool cool. But at the same time I'm trying
- 1:26:44to switch. Feels like I had a interview
- 1:26:47with the studio71 because I want to be like an audio engineer and
- 1:26:53this has all been a great resume but it's still hard to actually
- 1:26:56get the job. So I'm trying to become like a
- 1:26:59production assistant or just like a freelance worker
- 1:27:01somewhere else. So treated like I've got degree
- 1:27:05in four years experience in marketing and I've been
- 1:27:07unemployed for the last year. It happens, nice crazy like and
- 1:27:13I've had more work and success. With freelancing that seems to
- 1:27:16be the career that's happened. And I'm fine with that.
- 1:27:19I am. That's what I want because I
- 1:27:20want Financial Freedom. I want no, not just Financial
- 1:27:23freedom, freedom of time, freedom to choose hours, because
- 1:27:27I think that's a thing as well as everyone is productive at
- 1:27:30different times. I don't think the whole nine to
- 1:27:32five thing really should apply for everyone.
- 1:27:34And yeah I've spoken to people on the phone as well where they
- 1:27:38won't allow remote working and they say their workers loved it.
- 1:27:42I loved being in the office and I'm like, ha ha.
- 1:27:45Screw you you wrong then they just too afraid to say that they
- 1:27:50don't want to die. He had she had the audacity to
- 1:27:53say that to me. Oh yeah, my workers love working
- 1:27:56in the office. They miss it so much.
- 1:27:58It's like, oh shit. Don't maybe that bullshit in the
- 1:28:02background there crying or like every time the boss comes in.
- 1:28:05They're like oh shit. Yes, I'm so happy here.
- 1:28:09Yes, yes, I love it. It's great.
- 1:28:12You got to be pulling the lips up so they're smiling.
- 1:28:15Eiling. Okay, so yeah.
- 1:28:19You what you want to be a sound engineer?
- 1:28:20That's the plan then. Well, best of luck with that,
- 1:28:22man. I hope it works out for you and,
- 1:28:25you know, I mean, it's not too much of a departure from what
- 1:28:28you're doing now, really. I mean, it's certainly your in
- 1:28:31the White Field. I don't need, you know?
- 1:28:32I mean like I hope so and I hope it works out too, but I'd kiss
- 1:28:38like, the mechanical engineer degree compared to like the like
- 1:28:43audio production, assistant or audio went freelance.
- 1:28:46And it's a bit different like the interview he says I ask then
- 1:28:50you have a question for me says yeah.
- 1:28:53So I see mechanical engineer. Can you tell me about that?
- 1:28:57Is the ferry sort of different. It still has a audio engineer
- 1:29:01but It's not like the inverse but it's the opposite.
- 1:29:07Yeah, so we mentioned at the top of this that you're from
- 1:29:11Connecticut. What are the best and worst
- 1:29:13things about Connecticut? Yeah.
- 1:29:16So what's the worst about I can I get ya?
- 1:29:22Because I asked a lot of my guests.
- 1:29:24This, when they're from a place, I have an interview from before,
- 1:29:27and I always like to get, like, an honest and account for that
- 1:29:31person because obviously, you don't want Bury your hometown,
- 1:29:33but at the same time like you're going to be honest about it.
- 1:29:35It's not like you're the mayor or something, you know, you're
- 1:29:37gonna give me like legit like, well this is good, this is shit.
- 1:29:41This is how it is. Yeah I get it.
- 1:29:44That's why I say worse because people like to Source shit, I
- 1:29:48Connecticut not too much. We are so we do have our ups and
- 1:29:51downs. Basically, Connecticut is
- 1:29:53squeezed between Boston, New York city.
- 1:29:57So that's like we're like that middle ground.
- 1:30:00And we have the city of Hartford with Which cop became less
- 1:30:04shithole, its fell apart, but starting to come back around.
- 1:30:06So hopefully it gets better. We everything's close together.
- 1:30:12Because why don't realize compared to like the West Coast
- 1:30:14or other. I feel like Europe is actually
- 1:30:16similar to New England or Connecticut.
- 1:30:18Where everything's close together but there's not too
- 1:30:21much to do. We don't have like the best
- 1:30:23beaches we have some decent skiing snowboarding if you drive
- 1:30:27up to Vermont. But it's a we do have a top-five
- 1:30:32taxes tax rate so that's a gray people.
- 1:30:35Love that, no tax, that's what whoop.
- 1:30:40And I think we're like top five, worse infrastructure and like
- 1:30:43Road Sprouts like in the country to muscle up all hose and stuff.
- 1:30:49Oh yeah, everywhere like you can't walk without seeing a
- 1:30:51pothole. You can't drive without driving
- 1:30:53over 1, so that's Connecticut. You've sold me?
- 1:31:01Yeah. See I moved to Connecticut.
- 1:31:03There you go. Rio is oh yeah.
- 1:31:08And also where we've been the next state to legalize weed for
- 1:31:11the past five years so maybe the legalize it soon but they've
- 1:31:15been saying that for a while that that would be a big bonus.
- 1:31:18I think it allowed drive more people into the state when they
- 1:31:21can legally smoke. That would be New York, just
- 1:31:24legalized it. And so many people have been
- 1:31:27leaving Connecticut to go to Massachusetts, to get the legal
- 1:31:30weed there. And then they just drive back
- 1:31:32over the border and their We allowed to carry it into the on,
- 1:31:37it's illegal. But you can legally biomass and
- 1:31:39then you like, tuck under your seat or something or the cop
- 1:31:42pulls you over. Be like, hey, here's a little
- 1:31:44bit Dona, we good, you didn't see anything pal.
- 1:31:50All right, I remember, I got pulled over in New Hampshire
- 1:31:56with some friends and like we had weed because we like drove
- 1:32:00the Massachusetts and it's not funny that when we get pulled
- 1:32:03over we're like worried. Wait, wait, wait and then we
- 1:32:06realize wait, it's legal here. This is completely fine.
- 1:32:11This is fine. This is this is totally fine.
- 1:32:13Yeah we're not doing anything illegal here.
- 1:32:15That's yeah that's right. All right yeah relax guys yeah
- 1:32:21yeah we know that body Stone. The trunk crap.
- 1:32:24I knew we forgot something goddamn it.
- 1:32:31What I want to switch it up? What's the biggest life lesson
- 1:32:37that you've learned so far? There's a there's a few I guess
- 1:32:47like I must say like three small ones.
- 1:32:51Oh no that's cheating. It says many as you want. 3 Min
- 1:32:553 medium big. So not larger.
- 1:32:56So three big. Okay.
- 1:32:58So number one, try to be I guess try to be generalists in life.
- 1:33:05So what that means is, you don't have to worry about being a
- 1:33:09specialist, you don't have to be a pure expert on everything.
- 1:33:13Just be a generalist, have a general idea of many things.
- 1:33:16Make sure your general idea is like accurate and don't stress
- 1:33:20up too much. Don't give yourself imposter
- 1:33:21syndrome. Just understand what, you know,
- 1:33:24try to develop it. And the end that kind of feeds
- 1:33:27into stoicism of, like, can control, what you can control,
- 1:33:31whatever you can't control. So be it, whatever that the
- 1:33:37butterfly effect, that's actually the way logo of my
- 1:33:41show. The Y has a two arrows pointing
- 1:33:44off and I can dive more into it. But like the general idea is,
- 1:33:49when you come up to a road, any options in your life, there's
- 1:33:53options to choose from you. Go left or right but just
- 1:33:56realize that they will have Jurassic impacts.
- 1:33:59It's literally butterfly, like, everybody's heard you step on a
- 1:34:02butterfly and the freaking Toyota Camry, and California
- 1:34:05blows up for whatever reason. So don't let again stoicism.
- 1:34:10Don't let that stress you out too much but just the smallest
- 1:34:14decisions can have the biggest impacts.
- 1:34:19And the referee. With the third one was, the
- 1:34:21third one is, don't forget. When number three is a fair
- 1:34:27enough. Fair enough, thank you for
- 1:34:29sharing know, the third one is never speak about Fight Club.
- 1:34:32That's it. Let me speak.
- 1:34:39As we draw things to a close for today, do you have any upcoming
- 1:34:43projects that you'd like to share or maybe some final
- 1:34:45thoughts? Do you like to leave our
- 1:34:46listeners with sounds good? So, on upcoming projects, One of
- 1:34:54the coin tonight is Silk Road, that's going to are like four
- 1:34:58weeks. And that's about.
- 1:34:59Basically, this whole, was it the dark market and how drugs
- 1:35:03are sold over, the dark web, that's going to be exciting one
- 1:35:08and I'm forgetting the other one, there's like, two or three
- 1:35:12others, but there's one other exciting.
- 1:35:13One, it'll come back to me in a minute probably balsamic.
- 1:35:16Final thoughts is pretty audience, just I guess whatever
- 1:35:20you want to do in life, just do it like You brought up before,
- 1:35:24but when you say you're gonna do something or I'm gonna do this,
- 1:35:29I'm gonna do that. They actually did studies,
- 1:35:31where, like, you get the dopamine release in your brain
- 1:35:34and the satisfaction of doing something, even though you
- 1:35:37haven't done it because you say, I'm going to do something.
- 1:35:39So you feel like you've already done it and therefore you'll you
- 1:35:42won't do that thing. So try to take action in your
- 1:35:46life and when I say that, then when you see all those posts
- 1:35:49about, we need to help this cause or You see that mountain
- 1:35:54you want to hike or you see that something you want to do,
- 1:35:57realize what I said before? So that you actually do what you
- 1:36:01do in life But my father, thank you very much for sharing.
- 1:36:07I really appreciate it. And yeah, just thank you very
- 1:36:10much for agreeing to be a guest on the show.
- 1:36:12It's been actually pleasure listening to you and listen to

- 1:36:20show. You know, can tell people where
- 1:36:22to go for my show. Absolutely, yes, please.
- 1:36:25Please plug of course, of course.
- 1:36:27Yeah. So the advice, actually, the
- 1:36:33most important advice. Number one priority is just got
- 1:36:36podcast away.com. Like just podcast the wait, I
- 1:36:40can't do that ven. Thank you, awesome.
- 1:36:43Yeah, I know that my my listeners will definitely check
- 1:36:48you out. Other the low bunch.
