- 1:07Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:13Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right,
- 1:15Speaker 1: disc goes, Let's get into it. The New York Times
- 1:30Speaker 1: has a new list, okay, new list of the thirty
- 1:33Speaker 1: greatest living American songwriters that the paper released last week,
- 1:38Speaker 1: a couple days ago, not quite a week ago. Ian
- 1:40Speaker 1: Watkins from Lost Profits this week's subject of disgrace Land.
- 1:44Speaker 1: He's not on that list, and not just because he's
- 1:47Speaker 1: no longer alive, nor was he American, but also because well,
- 1:50Speaker 1: he wasn't a great songwriter. But Ian Watkins does, without
- 1:53Speaker 1: a doubt, belong on some sort of list, perhaps a
- 1:57Speaker 1: list of the most disgraceful musicians to ever live. It's
- 2:01Speaker 1: a long list. We're not gonna get into that list.
- 2:03Speaker 1: We're gonna use something a little bit different, okay, And
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna use this Times thing to jump off of here. Okay,
- 2:09Speaker 1: The Times the list of great songwriters, like I said,
- 2:12Speaker 1: is limited to thirty American living songwriters. Now, Zeth and
- 2:16Speaker 1: I will be discussing their choices, which I have to
- 2:18Speaker 1: say is is kind of bullshit but kind of spot
- 2:21Speaker 1: on at the same time. Anyways, we're gonna get into
- 2:23Speaker 1: it more fully in the exclusive section of this after Party.
- 2:27Speaker 1: The list of American songwriters who are alive and who
- 2:29Speaker 1: should be on this list is almost as long as
- 2:32Speaker 1: the list itself, the list of songwriters who are on it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I keep saying list, and it's bothering me. It doesn't
- 2:39Speaker 1: feel like I'm overusing the word. But then I say it,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and it does feel like I'm overusing it. You know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I don't know whatever. Anyways, Stephen Merritt from Magnetic Fields,
- 2:47Speaker 1: he's on the list, but Tom Waits isn't. I don't know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: make that makes sense. Anyways, Deeth and I are gonna try.
- 2:53Speaker 1: We're gonna try in a little bit. Just go to
- 2:54Speaker 1: disgracelandpod dot com to sign up if you're not already
- 2:57Speaker 1: signed up as an all access member of disgrace sand
- 2:59Speaker 1: and you'll be able to unlock this exclusive content, along
- 3:02Speaker 1: with some ad free content as well. Now, I suppose
- 3:07Speaker 1: the New York Times, I suppose they had to limit
- 3:10Speaker 1: this to thirty to make the list exclusive and thus interesting.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You gotta make it kind of hard. Can't have everybody
- 3:18Speaker 1: on the list, you know what I mean. Lord knows
- 3:20Speaker 1: there are far more than thirty great songwriters still alive
- 3:23Speaker 1: in America. But as for the greatest, well, if people
- 3:26Speaker 1: are going to care about the list, then I guess
- 3:28Speaker 1: there's got to be a limit. Same goes for the
- 3:31Speaker 1: list that I'm now compiling in my head. Ian Watkins,
- 3:36Speaker 1: it's our two hundred and seventy second episode, and obviously
- 3:41Speaker 1: there's a lot of musicians doing a lot of bad
- 3:43Speaker 1: things in those in those episodes, a lot of criminal activity,
- 3:47Speaker 1: a lot of crime. Now, not all of our episodes
- 3:50Speaker 1: detail musicians who are horrible people. Some tell the stories
- 3:54Speaker 1: of horrible things that happen to good people. Some tell
- 3:56Speaker 1: the stories about musicians and songwriters who yeah, did some
- 3:59Speaker 1: pretty any things in their lives, but redeemed themselves. And
- 4:04Speaker 1: in a lot of these stories, there's the main story,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and then there are these sort of ancillary, revelatory, surprising
- 4:13Speaker 1: stories that are just kind of, for lack of a
- 4:18Speaker 1: better word, shocking, And I don't necessarily mean shocking, like
- 4:22Speaker 1: the Ian Walkins story is shocking, like oh my god,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I can't believe another human being did that to somebody.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I mean shocking, like wait, what Billie Holiday did? What
- 4:35Speaker 1: that kind of thing? You know what I mean. There's
- 4:38Speaker 1: a lot of that, and I realize that a lot
- 4:42Speaker 1: of it gets said in these episodes, and we all
- 4:45Speaker 1: get caught up in the bigger, larger story and we
- 4:48Speaker 1: don't really talk about, like I said, these like these
- 4:51Speaker 1: little ancillary tidbity stories, surprising, super revelatory things, crimes oftentimes
- 4:58Speaker 1: lesser crimes, or you know, just weirder shit that musicians
- 5:02Speaker 1: get up to that I find to be fascinating. This
- 5:05Speaker 1: stuff kind of falls through the cracks of history, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: I look at our job in part as being we
- 5:10Speaker 1: got to kind of we gotta kind of pull it
- 5:12Speaker 1: back up through the cracks and let it take root
- 5:14Speaker 1: and flower it into some storytelling. So we're going to
- 5:18Speaker 1: use this New York Times list to create our own list,
- 5:20Speaker 1: our top five most surprising musician true crimes. Okay, keyword
- 5:27Speaker 1: is surprising. Now. The Times qualifies their lists by only
- 5:32Speaker 1: listing American and living musicians. We're not going to qualify
- 5:36Speaker 1: our list with that criteria. We're gonna All we're doing
- 5:41Speaker 1: is making sure that these crimes are truly surprising, truly revelatory.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Everybody knows about Shanditti Combs's crimes. Everybody knows by now
- 5:47Speaker 1: about the stupidity the Rolling Stones hiring criminals and the
- 5:50Speaker 1: Hell's Angels as security at Altamont. Everybody knows about the
- 5:53Speaker 1: Beach Boys Dennis Wilson befriending cult leader Charles Manson. What
- 5:57Speaker 1: I want to do is create a little list here
- 5:59Speaker 1: of rock stars, singing songwriters, hip hop star as musicians
- 6:02Speaker 1: who we've covered, who's again acts are truly surprising? All Right,
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's a top five list and number five iced Tea
- 6:11Speaker 1: now iced Tea. The gangster rap innovator is known the
- 6:15Speaker 1: world over nowadays as Officer Finn Tatola on Law and
- 6:18Speaker 1: Order SVU. But I few know that back in the day,
- 6:22Speaker 1: back before his rap career, after ice T had served
- 6:25Speaker 1: his stint as a soldier in the US Army, Do
- 6:28Speaker 1: you know that? Did you know that? I didn't know
- 6:30Speaker 1: that until I get the research. Okay, so after he's
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the army, but before he's a hip hop guy,
- 6:35Speaker 1: iced T used the leadership skills that he learned in
- 6:39Speaker 1: the service to put together and to lead a high
- 6:41Speaker 1: end jewelry heist crew. Okay, think Val Kilmer in heat
- 6:50Speaker 1: sort of that kind of thing. Diamonds, big gold, knots, rollxes,
- 6:54Speaker 1: you name it. If a jewelry store in southwestern California
- 6:56Speaker 1: carried it. Back in the early eighties, chances where the
- 6:58Speaker 1: iced T and his crew were trying to steal it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Not only from jewelry stores, iced Ty and his crew
- 7:03Speaker 1: also hijacked trucks. Okay, truck hijacking. Ice team was never caught,
- 7:09Speaker 1: two members of his crew were and all this happened
- 7:11Speaker 1: before iced Ta decided that perhaps rhyming was a better
- 7:14Speaker 1: line of work than stealing Number four. Rick James. Now
- 7:18Speaker 1: we all know the Rick James mean, right, Cocaine is
- 7:22Speaker 1: a hell of a drug, the Dave Chappelle of it all.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We all know that Rick James kidnapped and tortured two
- 7:27Speaker 1: different women while in the throes of a heavy cocaine addiction.
- 7:31Speaker 1: But long before these events in the early nineteen nineties,
- 7:34Speaker 1: back in the late nineteen sixties early nineteen seventies, right
- 7:38Speaker 1: as Rick James was launching his career in music, Rick
- 7:42Speaker 1: needed money to hang out with and keep up with
- 7:45Speaker 1: the lifestyles of the rich and the famous that he
- 7:47Speaker 1: was trying to live amongst and keep up with and
- 7:50Speaker 1: become a part of. And he didn't have hit songs
- 7:52Speaker 1: at the time. Okay, So Rick James turned to drug smuggling.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And I don't mean just like loading up the well
- 8:00Speaker 1: of his car with you know, a couple, couple ounces
- 8:03Speaker 1: of dope. I mean real drug smuggling for the Colombian cartel. Yes,
- 8:09Speaker 1: Rick James smuggled drugs for the Colombian cartel. Don't believe me.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Read his autobiography. It's all in there. Number three Frank
- 8:17Speaker 1: Sinatra and No, not the story about how Frank worked
- 8:21Speaker 1: as a pimp for Jack Kennedy and how he was
- 8:23Speaker 1: the go between between JFK and Frank and his buddies
- 8:28Speaker 1: in the mafia. I'm talking about the story that was
- 8:31Speaker 1: revealed in the last few years from a new investigation
- 8:34Speaker 1: uncovering federal documents that prove, okay, that Frank Sinatra was
- 8:40Speaker 1: much more than just a friend of the mafia. Okay,
- 8:44Speaker 1: But as the book this is the book's called Frank
- 8:47Speaker 1: Sinatra and the Mafia Murders by Mike roth Miller and
- 8:50Speaker 1: Douglas Thompson. As that book alleges Frank Sinatra actively worked
- 8:55Speaker 1: for the mafia, earning money for them, using his connection
- 9:00Speaker 1: to protect them, all the while while working as one
- 9:03Speaker 1: of the world's biggest entertainers. In this fact, this is
- 9:07Speaker 1: why after Sinatra's son, Frank Sinatra Junior, was kidnapped in
- 9:11Speaker 1: nineteen sixty three, the three men believed to be connected
- 9:14Speaker 1: to that kidnapping were mysteriously tortured and killed. I know
- 9:18Speaker 1: it sounds crazy and no one talks about it, but
- 9:21Speaker 1: don't look at me. Look at the government documents detailed
- 9:24Speaker 1: in the book that I just mentioned in the fact
- 9:26Speaker 1: as well that the book was released on the heels
- 9:29Speaker 1: of a global pandemic back in the early twenty twenties,
- 9:32Speaker 1: when everybody was a wee bit distracted. Number two Paul McCartney, guys,
- 9:37Speaker 1: Paul McCartney did time in one of the world's most dangerous,
- 9:42Speaker 1: most notorious prisons. We talk about the Monster Mansion, the
- 9:46Speaker 1: prison that Ian Watkins did time in recently officially known
- 9:50Speaker 1: as HMP Wakefield, but called the Monster Mansion because of
- 9:53Speaker 1: the horrible home for real life monsters that HMP Wakefield is.
- 9:57Speaker 1: But Cosay's prison and in Tokyo, where Paul McCartney did time.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Isn't that far behind the Monster Mansion, especially back in
- 10:07Speaker 1: nineteen eighty when Cosage was ranked as one of the
- 10:09Speaker 1: world's worst and most dangerous penal facilities. And that was
- 10:15Speaker 1: when Paul McCartney again, back in nineteen eighty, the so
- 10:18Speaker 1: called safe Beetle. That was a time when the so
- 10:20Speaker 1: called safe Beetle completed his nine day prison stint for
- 10:23Speaker 1: drug possession after trying to sneak in about a half
- 10:26Speaker 1: pound of grass into Japan. Now nobody talks about this.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Paul McCartney, one of the world's most successful, most talented,
- 10:33Speaker 1: most famous musicians, doing time in one of the world's
- 10:38Speaker 1: most notorious prisons, and not all that long ago. Nineteen
- 10:42Speaker 1: eighty Okay, nineteen eighty was a long time ago, but still,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm not talking about the sixties here or the fifties.
- 10:47Speaker 1: This one blows my mind. I'll never get over it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I feel like I tell everybody this at parties we're
- 10:52Speaker 1: having drinks whatever. This is one of those ones I
- 10:55Speaker 1: don't shut up about. It's just no one. It's because
- 10:57Speaker 1: no one cares. Really, if anybody else cared besides me,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I wouldn't even find it that interesting. But just the
- 11:02Speaker 1: fact that no one talks about this is kind of
- 11:03Speaker 1: mind blowing. And I don't mean that people should be
- 11:06Speaker 1: talking about it, like judging Paul for it. I just
- 11:09Speaker 1: think it's it's kind of badass, actually, you know. I mean,
- 11:13Speaker 1: the guy did time with Yakuza like real time nuts,
- 11:19Speaker 1: but this is the best one This is my all
- 11:21Speaker 1: time fave. This is number one with a bullet. Billy Holiday. Now,
- 11:28Speaker 1: this crime kind of innocuous compared to some of the
- 11:31Speaker 1: ones we've been discussing here. But Billy Holiday, who spent
- 11:35Speaker 1: most of her career as one of the greatest voices
- 11:38Speaker 1: in pop music while also being heavily addicted to heroin,
- 11:42Speaker 1: Billy Holiday actually taught her dog how to deliver her heroin. Now,
- 11:49Speaker 1: rather than me trying to explain the number one artist's
- 11:52Speaker 1: crime on our list here, I'm just going to play
- 11:54Speaker 1: a clip from our Billie Holiday episode back in twenty
- 11:57Speaker 1: twenty two about Billy and her incredible drug dealing to
- 12:00Speaker 1: mister Matt played the clip, please, but that meant she
- 12:04Speaker 1: needed drugs regularly, and for a woman of her profile,
- 12:08Speaker 1: that was no easy task. She knew she was being
- 12:11Speaker 1: watched cops, locals, Feds whoever. She knew she was a
- 12:15Speaker 1: potential prize scout, a bold face name, capable of putting
- 12:18Speaker 1: a shine on the name of the arresting officer in
- 12:20Speaker 1: the papers. She couldn't be holding ever, it was too risky.
- 12:25Speaker 1: She could be searched at any moment without cause. She
- 12:28Speaker 1: was a black woman in a very white man's world
- 12:30Speaker 1: at the time, so a plan was hatched. Mister Mister
- 12:37Speaker 1: was Billy's dog, a boxer. Mister was smart, smarter than
- 12:41Speaker 1: some of the men in Billy's life, and definitely smarter
- 12:43Speaker 1: than some of the drummers she'd known. Mister was capable,
- 12:46Speaker 1: Mister was trained. Mister loved Billy. Mister was obedient. Mister
- 12:51Speaker 1: was crooked as fucked. Mister got recruited by Joe Guy.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Joe Guy was recruited by Billy, first to blow a
- 12:57Speaker 1: trumpet in her band, then to blow her away in
- 12:59Speaker 1: the sack, then to run mister for her. Joe Guy
- 13:02Speaker 1: every day, every day, bought an ounce of heroin up
- 13:06Speaker 1: on Eighth Avenue. Then he'd find mister, give mister a treat.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Mister would sit. Joe Guy would attach that ounce of
- 13:12Speaker 1: heroin to Mister's collar inconspicuously. Next time for mister's daily
- 13:17Speaker 1: walk down morning side drive over to the Braddock Hotel.
- 13:20Speaker 1: With the Braddock sign in his sights, Mister would know
- 13:23Speaker 1: what time it was time to see the man in
- 13:25Speaker 1: the funny hat who operated the elevator. For another treat.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Mister would run around the back of the brattoic Joe
- 13:31Speaker 1: guy his work gone would bounce, Mister would scratch the door.
- 13:35Speaker 1: The man and the funny hat would appear. Mister would
- 13:37Speaker 1: follow him into the hotel and into the elevator. He'd
- 13:40Speaker 1: go and have his new treat tossed to him before
- 13:42Speaker 1: the doors would close up. Then the doors would open,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and that meant another treat, this tree from Billy, who'd
- 13:49Speaker 1: be waiting for mister on the other side of the
- 13:51Speaker 1: opening elevator doors, on the top of the floor. Out
- 13:54Speaker 1: of the elevator and into Billy's arms. Mister would go first,
- 13:57Speaker 1: He'd get his treat. Then he'd gets smothered with love
- 14:00Speaker 1: from his mistress. Then she'd detached the special package mister
- 14:03Speaker 1: had brought her. She'd sit, she'd shoot, She'd say them
- 14:07Speaker 1: away wild. She was a star, a very high star.
- 14:17Speaker 1: She descended from the rough and tumble streets of Baltimore,
- 14:19Speaker 1: then Harlem, through reform school, whorehouses, welfare island, to the
- 14:23Speaker 1: top of the music game with a bad habit, but
- 14:26Speaker 1: able to satiate that habit from a penthouse suite via
- 14:29Speaker 1: a trained canine who ran drugs for her on orders
- 14:32Speaker 1: from a man who worked for her. Billie holiday Stone
- 14:37Speaker 1: Cold Surreal all right, there you have it. That was
- 14:42Speaker 1: Billy Holliday and her dog Mister number one on the
- 14:44Speaker 1: list of top five most surprising musicians in their true crimes.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Most surprising true crimes by musicians. Excuse me, I got
- 14:51Speaker 1: to get the copyright for the New York Times. They're
- 14:53Speaker 1: about to call Anyways, all these stories, like the Billie
- 14:56Speaker 1: Holiday story, they're all available in our archive. You can
- 14:59Speaker 1: check them out Matt's and the episode info for you
- 15:01Speaker 1: on all five of these gems in the show notes
- 15:04Speaker 1: here to help you easily navigate your way through our
- 15:06Speaker 1: archive of over two hundred and seventy episodes. All Right,
- 15:10Speaker 1: this week, as I mentioned our new episode on Ian
- 15:13Speaker 1: Watkins from Lost Profits, you might know the story about
- 15:17Speaker 1: the horrific abuse Walkins committed and is truly horrible crimes,
- 15:21Speaker 1: but you might not know the rest of the story
- 15:23Speaker 1: about how is crimes the sickening abuse of children, How
- 15:27Speaker 1: these crimes could have been prevented were it not for
- 15:29Speaker 1: authorities dismissing the warnings and accusations of a woman they
- 15:34Speaker 1: wrote off for reasons that are fucking mind bendingly stupid. Okay,
- 15:39Speaker 1: we explained it all on our episode, but the point
- 15:42Speaker 1: is This is ultimately the story of a hero who
- 15:44Speaker 1: would not be denied, and she's a very unlikely hero
- 15:47Speaker 1: and you're gonna want to hear it. So check out
- 15:49Speaker 1: the Ian Watkins from Lost Profits episode the latest episode
- 15:52Speaker 1: of Disgraceland in your feeds right now. So that's the
- 15:56Speaker 1: Ian Walkins story. Now, speaking of dirtags, we have two
- 15:58Speaker 1: Sean Diddycombs episodes. It's coming up this weekend. After this
- 16:01Speaker 1: here bonus episode, we have part one, which details the
- 16:04Speaker 1: story of Diddy in the nightclub shooting from back in
- 16:07Speaker 1: the nineties with j Lo. Now, this is in a way,
- 16:11Speaker 1: Diddy's dirt bag origin story. Okay, did He's dad was
- 16:15Speaker 1: a gangster? At least he was gangster affiliated. There's the
- 16:20Speaker 1: whole thing with the charity basketball game and Heavy D
- 16:22Speaker 1: and the boys and the nine people who died. Now,
- 16:24Speaker 1: when you know how did he came up and what
- 16:28Speaker 1: his past was like, and how his father lived and
- 16:32Speaker 1: died and what he did he was up to before
- 16:35Speaker 1: he was famous. His crimes that we were all exposed
- 16:39Speaker 1: to in the last couple of years did become a
- 16:41Speaker 1: bit easier to understand. And we're going to get into that.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And like I said, the nightclub shooting with j Loo
- 16:47Speaker 1: and all those nineties headlines in Part one of our
- 16:50Speaker 1: Sean Combe's story, Part two is much different. Okay, that's
- 16:55Speaker 1: being re released as a rewind this week as well.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Part two of our Didty story was and before his
- 17:01Speaker 1: recent conviction and sentencing, but after the cassivn Tura accusations,
- 17:08Speaker 1: after the indictment. Actually so, In fact, this episode is
- 17:12Speaker 1: based almost entirely on the indictments that were released, the
- 17:17Speaker 1: federal indictment, the Cassi even Tur indictment, the Little Rod
- 17:19Speaker 1: Jones indictment, and the episode is a reenactment of sorts,
- 17:23Speaker 1: a dramatization of the horrific events detailed by Cassie and
- 17:27Speaker 1: others in the indictments, and we teamed that information up
- 17:31Speaker 1: with more research on Ditty's past and his motivations for
- 17:35Speaker 1: living the life that he lived. Okay, these episodes, both
- 17:39Speaker 1: of them, they will surprise you no matter what you
- 17:42Speaker 1: think you know about Sean Ditty Combs. And it's important,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I think, to listen to these episodes to truly understand
- 17:48Speaker 1: who this guy is because in two years he's going
- 17:50Speaker 1: to be out of prison, and I guarantee you this
- 17:54Speaker 1: will be different than Oj getting out of jail. This
- 17:57Speaker 1: will be different than Bill Cosby getting out of jail.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I guess I garantee you. Diddy will worm his way
- 18:02Speaker 1: back into polite society, and he'll be right there on
- 18:05Speaker 1: our screens, in our feeds, making music, making content, making news,
- 18:10Speaker 1: making money, and these these episodes will hopefully help you
- 18:14Speaker 1: never forget who he truly is at his core, where
- 18:19Speaker 1: he comes from, and why he did what he did.
- 18:22Speaker 1: D I d did Diddy there, see I did that.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I didn't plan on that, I kind of did. Anyways,
- 18:29Speaker 1: check those two Diddy rewind episodes out. They're coming this weekend.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Next week our new episode on Stevie Rayvon. Guys, simple question,
- 18:35Speaker 1: when you're listening to that Stevie Rayvon's story, be thinking
- 18:37Speaker 1: about Okay, Steve Ravon died young, Gone Too Soon? All right?
- 18:43Speaker 1: You can have four dead rock stars on your mount
- 18:46Speaker 1: Rushmore of Gone Too Soon rock Stars? Who's it going
- 18:49Speaker 1: to be? Is Stevie Rayvon on your list? You only
- 18:52Speaker 1: get four four choices six one, seven, nine oh six
- 18:54Speaker 1: sixty six three, eight voicemails and texts to let me
- 18:57Speaker 1: know who's on your Mount Rushmore of Gone to Soon
- 19:01Speaker 1: Rock stars again. Limit your answers to four please, okay,
- 19:04Speaker 1: don't cheat. If you like The New York Times, limit
- 19:07Speaker 1: your list. Okay, all right, right after this your voicemails, calls,
- 19:11Speaker 1: text emails, and the greatest argument over sitcom music that
- 19:14Speaker 1: you've ever heard, all guys. Last week, during the editing
- 19:37Speaker 1: of the exclusive portion of The After Party, we were
- 19:41Speaker 1: done recording it, Zeth and I, and you know, you
- 19:43Speaker 1: get recording, you get done recording, and then the files
- 19:47Speaker 1: go over to Matt. Matt puts it together. While Zeth
- 19:50Speaker 1: and I were done and we were off doing whatever
- 19:52Speaker 1: else we were doing that day, we got a text
- 19:53Speaker 1: from Matt, who was putting the episode together, like I said,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and the text just said, oh mom and Dad are fighting.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And what Matt was referring to was this argument Zeth
- 20:03Speaker 1: and I got into over of all things sitcom music.
- 20:08Speaker 1: It wasn't so much of an argument, was it was
- 20:10Speaker 1: a disagreement. I don't like argument with people because I'm
- 20:12Speaker 1: on this tip lately, my new thing. You can't convince
- 20:14Speaker 1: anybody of anything. Nobody's ever been convinced of anything in
- 20:18Speaker 1: the history of the world. Seriously, ask yourself if you've
- 20:21Speaker 1: ever truly been convinced of something, and then think, did
- 20:24Speaker 1: that person convince me to think the exact opposite way
- 20:27Speaker 1: that I was thinking before, or did I convince myself
- 20:32Speaker 1: through a series of information on covering Maybe that person
- 20:36Speaker 1: propelled me on a journey to discovery. But that person
- 20:39Speaker 1: didn't actually have an argument with me. And I just
- 20:42Speaker 1: sat there and said, yeah, you know what, You're right.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I no longer think the way I thought ten. No
- 20:48Speaker 1: one can be convinced of anything by anyone else. That's
- 20:52Speaker 1: my new shit. So I was in no place to
- 20:55Speaker 1: argue with Zeth. I was just kind of disagreeing with him,
- 20:58Speaker 1: And I mean he deserved to be disagreed with because
- 21:02Speaker 1: he was completely fucking wrong. As you're gonna hear, because Matt,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Matt is going to share some of his madness that
- 21:12Speaker 1: has been compelled by this disagreement. And I'm not talking
- 21:16Speaker 1: about you know, Matt's going a little crazy here, okay,
- 21:18Speaker 1: if I'm being honest, And this has driven him to
- 21:21Speaker 1: a place that I've never really seen Matt go to before.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And I'm not talking about you know, regular overworked production
- 21:26Speaker 1: guy crazy. Matt's gone full Colonel Kurtz straight Jack Torrents
- 21:29Speaker 1: from the Overlook Hotel, downright psychotic Patrick Bateman style, all
- 21:34Speaker 1: over this disagreement we had before I explained the depths
- 21:38Speaker 1: of Matt's newfound insanity and what depths of his insanity
- 21:43Speaker 1: mean for you guys, Matt, why don't you just detach
- 21:46Speaker 1: the electrodes from your temples there for a moment and
- 21:49Speaker 1: play a clip of this so called argument. Guy Sesame
- 21:54Speaker 1: Street was so good. Oh man, it was the best. Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 3: The music, man, the music alone like that. Think it
- 22:00Speaker 3: was the Pointer sisters that did the one, two, three,
- 22:02Speaker 3: four five s except yeah, eleven twelve, Yeah, I think so.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Wow, no, wonder it was so good.
- 22:07Speaker 3: I know, man, this is back when they put some
- 22:09Speaker 3: effort into that ship.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And then remember it was like, oh yeah, you think
- 22:13Speaker 1: this is cool? Way to you hear the fucking Electric
- 22:14Speaker 1: Company exactly?
- 22:17Speaker 3: The elect the muppets blow your mind, and then the
- 22:18Speaker 3: electric company.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yea, what the fuck?
- 22:21Speaker 5: Man?
- 22:22Speaker 1: Who's this tall, fucking, skinny, freckled guy. Later we find
- 22:25Speaker 1: out it's Morgan Freeman. You know, we had a good
- 22:28Speaker 1: back in the seventies.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Man, we did have a good man.
- 22:31Speaker 1: What do they got now? Fucking bluey and uh, what
- 22:34Speaker 1: do they got? What's the Big Ship. I don't know.
- 22:37Speaker 3: My kids have phased out of all that stuff, but
- 22:38Speaker 3: we just don't have even like eighties sitcoms. Every they
- 22:42Speaker 3: all had theme songs that were like intentionally written, you
- 22:45Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Well they still do and they really don't really though.
- 22:48Speaker 1: You get like a little ding dunk dong.
- 22:50Speaker 3: It's just like I actually cut that.
- 22:52Speaker 1: That sounds a little too Uh. They're just like, uh,
- 22:55Speaker 1: no one thought you were doing what you think. It
- 22:58Speaker 1: sounded like okay until you pour it out and you
- 23:00Speaker 1: weren't doing it, So it doesn't matter. No, I hard disagree,
- 23:05Speaker 1: hard disagree. There's some great modern day kids. There's great Yeah,
- 23:10Speaker 1: there's a great Uh, there's a great Netflix like new
- 23:14Speaker 1: Netflix animated show that has a really kind of old
- 23:18Speaker 1: school I don't know what it is. I'll find out.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I'll ask well and when he gets home from school.
- 23:23Speaker 1: And then there's there's even like like I like the
- 23:25Speaker 1: blue Ey theme. I think I think letters to Cleo,
- 23:29Speaker 1: like Matt don't know this. I think like I think
- 23:31Speaker 1: all the Ship was done at fucking Q Division, by
- 23:33Speaker 1: the way, Like there's some like I think Kay Hanley's
- 23:36Speaker 1: done a lot of this stuff.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I don't doubt you. I'm just saying they last like
- 23:39Speaker 3: five seconds these days before they were like I'm all right, fine,
- 23:44Speaker 3: maybe all right?
- 23:44Speaker 1: Yepler than you are, dude, I have to say, you
- 23:46Speaker 1: have you have a lot of patience for me disagreeing
- 23:49Speaker 1: with you, all right, So so there you have it. Now,
- 23:53Speaker 1: because of this disagreement, Matt has gone and tried to
- 23:58Speaker 1: come up with a way to settle this, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 1: sort of. You know, I think Matt's contention is that,
- 24:04Speaker 1: you know, sitcom music, as Deth and I both we
- 24:08Speaker 1: were getting at We weren't really disagreeing over this, you know,
- 24:10Speaker 1: we both were at the point where we think sitcom
- 24:12Speaker 1: music and just TV music in general was better in
- 24:14Speaker 1: the day, back in the day, the day being the eighties,
- 24:17Speaker 1: the nineties. Now Matt has cook something up for us
- 24:22Speaker 1: all to sort of delve into this a little further.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But I can't explain it as well as he can.
- 24:26Speaker 1: So Matt, wy, don't you go ahead and chime in
- 24:29Speaker 1: here and let the people know what you're cooking.
- 24:32Speaker 6: First of all, Jake, I just want to paraphrase Joni
- 24:36Speaker 6: Mitchell here and say I told you when you hired
- 24:39Speaker 6: me that I was crazy but anyway, it's got me
- 24:41Speaker 6: thinking a lot about all of our gen X listeners,
- 24:44Speaker 6: our baby boomer listeners, you know, folks who were around
- 24:49Speaker 6: in the golden age of the seventies and eighties with
- 24:52Speaker 6: these sitcom themes. And I was also thinking maybe about
- 24:55Speaker 6: some of our younger listeners who didn't get to experience
- 24:59Speaker 6: that for hand. And so what I've cooked up is
- 25:03Speaker 6: a March Madness style, sixty four entrant tournament of the
- 25:10Speaker 6: greatest sitcom themes of all time.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Now, there were a.
- 25:14Speaker 6: Certain criteria that had to be met. Luckily, we have
- 25:19Speaker 6: the Sitcomtron two thousand, which is an advanced technology that
- 25:24Speaker 6: we've invested in that can help rank these things for us. Anyway,
- 25:29Speaker 6: we've got sixty four entrants and we're looking for our
- 25:33Speaker 6: listeners to come in and vote, and we will be
- 25:37Speaker 6: running the tournament throughout the month of May, calling it
- 25:40Speaker 6: May Madness and to vote. To get involved, all you
- 25:44Speaker 6: got to do is go to Patreon dot com slash disgraceland.
- 25:48Speaker 6: You do not have to be a Patreon member to
- 25:50Speaker 6: get involved in this, but come on over to patreon
- 25:53Speaker 6: dot com slash disgraceland. See what we're doing over there.
- 25:57Speaker 6: See what the other discos are up to, and even
- 25:59Speaker 6: if you're not a member, you can come in and vote.
- 26:03Speaker 6: First round voting ends this Friday, May eighth, at eleven
- 26:09Speaker 6: fifty nine pm Eastern Standard time.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Matt, any light that you can shed on how the
- 26:16Speaker 1: voting is shaping up thus far.
- 26:19Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, it's still early in the tournament.
- 26:22Speaker 6: We're here in the first round, but already we have
- 26:25Speaker 6: a lot of exciting action. And here's our halftime report
- 26:29Speaker 6: on the first round. We've already got a lot of
- 26:33Speaker 6: excitement brewing. In Group one, we've got a potential huge
- 26:37Speaker 6: upset with the Jetsons who are currently leading Good Times,
- 26:43Speaker 6: so that's that would be a shocking upset. Also in
- 26:46Speaker 6: group one, we have a knockdown, drag out fight between
- 26:51Speaker 6: It's Gary Schandling Show and Chico and the Man. It's
- 26:55Speaker 6: it's too close to call at this point. It's going
- 26:57Speaker 6: to come down to the wire. Same thing with Alice
- 27:00Speaker 6: and growing Pains. Over in group two, we've got a
- 27:04Speaker 6: couple matchups that are kind of interesting. Lower in the bracket,
- 27:07Speaker 6: we've got Malcolm in the middle leading, Charles in Charge
- 27:11Speaker 6: and married with children taking the lead over the higher
- 27:15Speaker 6: seeded Bosom Buddies, and now in Group three, we've got
- 27:18Speaker 6: a huge upset brewing at halftime here with the Flintstones
- 27:23Speaker 6: leading mods, so you can see these animated shows have
- 27:26Speaker 6: really shown up to play this year, and Group four
- 27:29Speaker 6: so far is really you know, playing out as you
- 27:31Speaker 6: might expect with the higher seeded shows leading. But you
- 27:35Speaker 6: know it's only halftime. If you want the full details
- 27:38Speaker 6: on the halftime score, check out the post on Patreon
- 27:42Speaker 6: right below this one. It'll be called May Madness Halftime Report,
- 27:46Speaker 6: and you can get all the current scores so you
- 27:49Speaker 6: can see what we're looking at heading into the last
- 27:53Speaker 6: couple days of voting in round one.
- 27:55Speaker 1: All right, truly riveting stuff here at double Evis. I
- 28:00Speaker 1: don't know why this is important to us, but it is.
- 28:02Speaker 1: If you're of a certain age as we are, perhaps
- 28:04Speaker 1: it's important to you as well. We know it is
- 28:06Speaker 1: for the folks over at Patreon. They're loving it. I
- 28:09Speaker 1: imagine at some point I will get into this a
- 28:11Speaker 1: little more fully on Instagram as well. Anyways, we hope
- 28:15Speaker 1: you vote, We hope you. I mean, this is the
- 28:16Speaker 1: important stuff. Okay, so get in here and let us know,
- 28:19Speaker 1: right you're shaping culture Okay, this is stuff is going
- 28:22Speaker 1: to be memorialized forever, and you know there needs to
- 28:25Speaker 1: be a record before AI comes and just you know,
- 28:26Speaker 1: ruins everything, just flattens it, all right, So let your
- 28:29Speaker 1: voice be heard. Welcome to behind the scenes the madness
- 28:32Speaker 1: here at Double evis. Now, let's let's crawl out of
- 28:34Speaker 1: the sitcom madness and hear from you guys on Ian Walkins,
- 28:37Speaker 1: from the Lost Profits and a little bit I guess
- 28:40Speaker 1: on Foo Fighters from last week with the Ian Watkins episode.
- 28:44Speaker 1: The question of the week was which story from music
- 28:48Speaker 1: history upset you guys the most? On that topic, Let's
- 28:52Speaker 1: hear from the two to one three Before we get
- 28:55Speaker 1: into the call here, it's gonna remind you all that
- 28:57Speaker 1: the views and opinions expressed by call dollars, texters, emailers,
- 29:01Speaker 1: et cetera are the views of the callers and the
- 29:05Speaker 1: texters and the emailers and not necessarily of my own.
- 29:08Speaker 1: With that disclaimer, let's now dip into the two to
- 29:12Speaker 1: one three.
- 29:12Speaker 5: Here the music history story that I absolutely cannot shake
- 29:17Speaker 5: ever since I heard it, and it makes me so pissed.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Off because it was it's I just.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Feel like not enough people are talking about it. Are
- 29:26Speaker 5: the connection between River Phoenix's death and John Frisciante.
- 29:32Speaker 7: And I don't know if it's just like the fame.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Of John and his like whole comeback story, but the fact.
- 29:40Speaker 7: That like it's pretty much easy, very easy to connect
- 29:48Speaker 7: his drugs to River Phoenix's death.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Then John leaves, the band goes basically on like the
- 29:56Speaker 5: Bender to End All Benders, and then nobody he ever
- 30:00Speaker 5: talks about it ever.
- 30:03Speaker 4: That pisses me off.
- 30:04Speaker 7: That pisses me off because.
- 30:05Speaker 5: It makes River Phoenix look just like another junkie that
- 30:09Speaker 5: died on the street when by many accounts most you know,
- 30:14Speaker 5: there was an accident and he didn't know what he
- 30:18Speaker 5: was taking, and effectively he was dosed. He was dosed
- 30:24Speaker 5: by John Fruchiante. And it makes me really angry because
- 30:31Speaker 5: River didn't have to die.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Ah. Yeah, listen, this story upsets me to no end,
- 30:37Speaker 1: and thank you for the voicemail because it's compelled me
- 30:42Speaker 1: to I've long wanted to do a Red Hot Chili
- 30:45Speaker 1: Peppers episode, but I've never read Anthony Keatis's book, and
- 30:51Speaker 1: I just don't want to get into more of the
- 30:55Speaker 1: same rock star debauchery bullshit that's not particularly interesting. Or
- 31:00Speaker 1: maybe it is. I don't know. I just don't have
- 31:01Speaker 1: high hopes for it this story. Though I love John Freschianty.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I just he's one of my favorite guitar players. He's incredible.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And I've known about this theory and the evidence behind
- 31:14Speaker 1: it that connects him to the death of River Phoenix allegedly.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I've actually heard from people who were there that night
- 31:22Speaker 1: and first hand accounts, and it's super compelling. And I'll
- 31:27Speaker 1: tell you what. The thing that's always sort of stopped
- 31:31Speaker 1: me from heading into the story full bore has been
- 31:36Speaker 1: there's this one really tough fact here, and it's the
- 31:41Speaker 1: fact that Flee was super tight with River Phoenix and
- 31:46Speaker 1: he was very affected by River's death, and he's obviously
- 31:52Speaker 1: tight with John Freschianti as well. And I don't know
- 31:54Speaker 1: what any of that means, but I know it's complicated,
- 31:57Speaker 1: and I know I want to tell this story. I
- 31:59Speaker 1: know I want to look into it. And maybe there's
- 32:01Speaker 1: not absolute proof there, but even in the absence of proof,
- 32:05Speaker 1: we can we can present facts as we find them,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and we can draw our own conclusions. So thank you
- 32:11Speaker 1: for this, appreciate the message. All right, let's check out
- 32:13Speaker 1: this voicemail from the two to one seven.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, this is Craig from this one to seven area.
- 32:18Speaker 4: I think one of the most shitty stories.
- 32:21Speaker 7: I've heard about a.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Rock musician in the recent history of well. I guess
- 32:25Speaker 4: this twenty seventeen would have been Tom Petty and how
- 32:29Speaker 4: his uh he died a mixture of pain medications and
- 32:34Speaker 4: other medications that were all prescribed to him by his doctor.
- 32:38Speaker 4: I think that you know, his with his past and
- 32:42Speaker 4: being a musician and having the past that a lot
- 32:45Speaker 4: of musicians have, I think his doctor prescribing him with
- 32:49Speaker 4: all these medications without being extra careful and then him
- 32:53Speaker 4: passing away at the young age of sixty six was
- 32:56Speaker 4: was pretty upsetting, pretty shitty to hear when I when
- 32:59Speaker 4: I got in to work that day. So that was
- 33:02Speaker 4: one of the things that really came to mind. Also,
- 33:04Speaker 4: anything that has to do with with Weenen. When ween
- 33:08Speaker 4: breaks up, it's shitty, man, they know, because most of
- 33:10Speaker 4: the time when they break up, where they take a break,
- 33:12Speaker 4: a hiatus or whatever, they're in the middle of a tour,
- 33:14Speaker 4: they're doing shows.
- 33:15Speaker 1: They've got to.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Cancel all these shows. And I understand recently, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 4: with Dean ween he you know, he had to take
- 33:23Speaker 4: a break to take care of himself mentally and take
- 33:26Speaker 4: a mental break from things. Totally get it. It's just
- 33:29Speaker 4: kind of an upsetting thing to hear, but you know,
- 33:32Speaker 4: you got to take care of yourself. But anyways, Jake,
- 33:35Speaker 4: do a story on Wean Man Cold on mean if
- 33:39Speaker 4: you ever listen to them, they're They're one of the
- 33:41Speaker 4: most amazing, unique bands of our time. They've been around
- 33:46Speaker 4: since I think like the mid eighties. Dean and Jean
- 33:49Speaker 4: Ween hope to hear something from Ween.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Thanks. Yeah, I tell you that Tom Petty death story
- 33:55Speaker 1: is incredibly frustrating. Incredibly frustrating in a similar way, so
- 34:01Speaker 1: is the Glenn Fry death story as well. Hard pivot
- 34:06Speaker 1: to Ween Man, I didn't see that coming. I love Ween,
- 34:09Speaker 1: I really truly do. I love them. They're they're divisive
- 34:12Speaker 1: band here in the Brennan household. I've managed to get
- 34:15Speaker 1: the whole family on board though, and I was actually
- 34:18Speaker 1: I saw the funniest meme yesterday It said that the
- 34:21Speaker 1: best Elliott Smith song is Baby Bitch by Ween. You'll
- 34:25Speaker 1: appreciate that. Two one seven. I'd love to do a
- 34:27Speaker 1: Wien episode. I don't know much about him. I have
- 34:30Speaker 1: a friend who's who's friends with one of the Weien brothers.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I'm not sure which one. Are the crimes there though?
- 34:36Speaker 1: You know, is there anything true crime me there? If
- 34:38Speaker 1: there is? Two one seven, hit me back and let
- 34:41Speaker 1: me know, let me find help me find a way in.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Maybe I can do it through some a Ween story,
- 34:46Speaker 1: through some Philly mob Philly mob stuff. I don't know.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Maybe maybe I'm just reaching six one seven nine oh
- 34:53Speaker 1: six six six three eight. You want to get in touch,
- 34:55Speaker 1: we can talk about Ween. We can talk about whatever
- 34:57Speaker 1: you want. Six four six text and hey, Jake Balls,
- 35:00Speaker 1: well with you and your family. I have a good
- 35:01Speaker 1: one for you, Phil, Him and Phil? Why am I
- 35:04Speaker 1: reading your text? What?
- 35:05Speaker 5: What?
- 35:06Speaker 1: What? Why are you teasing me? Phil? Get back all right?
- 35:09Speaker 1: I meant to read this one from the five o nine?
- 35:11Speaker 1: What up? Jake Brandon here in the five o nine.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Just got around to listening to that Food Fighters episode,
- 35:16Speaker 1: and Wow, as a lifelong food fan, I've been dying
- 35:19Speaker 1: to find out what really did Taylor in because, quite honestly,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I'm getting sick of people summing it up as just
- 35:26Speaker 1: junkie rock star shit and that angle with the insurance
- 35:29Speaker 1: companies is incredibly eye opening, and I have to admit
- 35:31Speaker 1: I never would have even thought that they'd have to
- 35:33Speaker 1: ensure their shows, but it totally makes sense. I wouldn't
- 35:36Speaker 1: have in a million years connected those dots, But the
- 35:38Speaker 1: more I think about it, the more I think that
- 35:39Speaker 1: that's the case, and he just simply died from rocking
- 35:42Speaker 1: too fucking hard for far too long. I'm just glad
- 35:45Speaker 1: I have something somewhat credible to defend my man with now.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Then I'm aware of the bigger pictures. So thanks for that.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Keep on rocking, you got it five on nine. Appreciate you.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Let's head on over to the eight one three wherever
- 35:57Speaker 1: that is? Where'd you go? Eight one to three? Eight
- 35:59Speaker 1: one three? Hey Jake? Finally listening to an after party
- 36:02Speaker 1: episode in real time. Listener James wrote in about Tory
- 36:06Speaker 1: Amos covering Slayer. Since you haven't heard that song, you
- 36:09Speaker 1: probably haven't listened to that album. It comes from her
- 36:12Speaker 1: two thousand and one concept album Strange Little Girls. The
- 36:15Speaker 1: album is all cover songs originally performed by men Eminem
- 36:20Speaker 1: The Beatles, Depeche Mode, and Tom Waits are all represented
- 36:23Speaker 1: and covered. It's worth a listen. My personal favorite are
- 36:26Speaker 1: her covers of I Don't Like Mondays and Rattlesnake Her
- 36:29Speaker 1: ninety seven, Bonnie and Clyde still is too creepy to
- 36:32Speaker 1: listen to again, Bonnie and Clyde ninety seven Bonnie, What
- 36:37Speaker 1: is that not the surge Gainesburg? Bonnie and Clyde? Is it?
- 36:41Speaker 1: Eight one three? Thank you for reminding me of Tori
- 36:45Speaker 1: Amos in the Slayer cover and apparently now a bunch
- 36:49Speaker 1: of other covers that I had no idea she did.
- 36:50Speaker 1: But also reminded me that I have to call Ryan
- 36:53Speaker 1: to work on a sort of Elton John piano sounding
- 36:57Speaker 1: cue for us, and I got to write that out
- 37:00Speaker 1: of my books. I'm gonna do that right now. Call
- 37:02Speaker 1: Ryan now, eight one three. I know you don't know
- 37:05Speaker 1: who Ryan is. Ryan does a bunch of the music
- 37:07Speaker 1: for us here, not all of it, but a bunch
- 37:08Speaker 1: of it. And uh yeah, I got a piano based
- 37:11Speaker 1: que that I need, and you know Toriemo's piano piano
- 37:14Speaker 1: based que.
- 37:15Speaker 4: There we go.
- 37:15Speaker 1: That's how my brain's working. Appreciate you eight win three
- 37:17Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 37:19Speaker 1: You guys want to get in touch on anything? You
- 37:21Speaker 1: want to talk more? Ian walkins and lost prophets, more
- 37:24Speaker 1: stories from music history that upset you. More Foo Fighters.
- 37:27Speaker 1: You want to get abby with your your mount Rushmore
- 37:30Speaker 1: of Gone too Soon rock Stars? Six one seven, nine
- 37:33Speaker 1: oh six, six six three eight voicemail and text. That's
- 37:37Speaker 1: how we're going to do it. Next week's question of
- 37:39Speaker 1: the week. I just mentioned it. What's your mount Rushmore
- 37:41Speaker 1: Gone too Soon? Rock Stars? Let's get into that. You
- 37:44Speaker 1: only get four Okay, call me up, leave me a voicemail,
- 37:47Speaker 1: send me a text. I'm gonna take a quick break.
- 37:49Speaker 8: I'll be back in a flash, all right.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Six one seven, nine oh six, six sixty three eight
- 38:05Speaker 1: voicemail and text to get at me at disgracelam pod
- 38:09Speaker 1: on the socials disgracelampod at gmail dot com on email.
- 38:13Speaker 1: This film should be played loud. That's our video podcast
- 38:16Speaker 1: that is available for you to check out right now.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Our new episode on high fidelity available for our Patreon members.
- 38:23Speaker 1: You gotta go to disgrace lampod dot com to sign up.
- 38:25Speaker 1: This film should be played loud. Like I said, is
- 38:27Speaker 1: a video podcast where Zeth and I discuss the greatest
- 38:30Speaker 1: movies with the greatest soundtracks. That's basically what it is.
- 38:33Speaker 1: We go through the songs, all the songs pretty much
- 38:36Speaker 1: not all. It's tough with high fidelity. Is so much
- 38:38Speaker 1: music in that movie, great music. But I'm here to
- 38:42Speaker 1: tell you not only that that episode is available for
- 38:44Speaker 1: you to watch right now, but that we have settled
- 38:47Speaker 1: the debate of what our next episode is going to be.
- 38:50Speaker 1: We put it to the people over on Patreon. We
- 38:51Speaker 1: did a poll. We knew we were going to do
- 38:53Speaker 1: a Wes Anderson film. We weren't sure if it was
- 38:55Speaker 1: going to be Rushmore or Royal Tenen bombs or perhaps
- 38:58Speaker 1: maybe you know fuck s and Er said, maybe you
- 39:00Speaker 1: guys wanted to want to hear us talk about something else. Anyways,
- 39:04Speaker 1: who put it to the people. The people came back
- 39:06Speaker 1: strongly for the Royal tene bombs. So that's gonna be
- 39:09Speaker 1: the next this film should be play a loud episode
- 39:12Speaker 1: that we do that'll be released end of May. Yeah, okay.
- 39:17Speaker 1: In the meantime, Matt wants you to give the people a
- 39:19Speaker 1: little taste of the high fidelity episode so they know
- 39:21Speaker 1: what they're missing if they're not yet subscribe over on Patreon.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Let's move on to Feel My Heat, which is the
- 39:29Speaker 3: category where we ask is the actor good at singing?
- 39:31Speaker 3: And I think we know the answer to this.
- 39:32Speaker 1: This, the answer to this could have been the answer
- 39:35Speaker 1: to every single category in here.
- 39:44Speaker 8: Don't know to this field.
- 39:50Speaker 9: And if you feel gonna scom it up, it's.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Scene I actually want to be at more than anything.
- 40:13Speaker 3: When Barry's band, which was originally called Sonic Death Monkey,
- 40:19Speaker 3: but they're going to change their name to Kathleen Turner Overdrive,
- 40:22Speaker 3: which is one of the greatest.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Song it's so great, it's almost as good as Willie
- 40:28Speaker 1: Nelson Mandela, but Kathleen Turner Overdrive will do.
- 40:33Speaker 3: So they're playing that. You know, Rob's putting out this
- 40:35Speaker 3: this record, this EP by these these skater punks that
- 40:38Speaker 3: steal from his store, and he's djang. What's that Vincent? Justin,
- 40:42Speaker 3: Vince and Justin and he's Djang And Barry's band's playing,
- 40:45Speaker 3: and he tries to pay Barry often not play because
- 40:47Speaker 3: he thinks that Barry's band is gonna suck. And of
- 40:49Speaker 3: course Barry's band blows everybody away with this cover of
- 40:53Speaker 3: Let's Get It On by Marvin Gay.
- 40:55Speaker 1: But not as but not as Kathleen Turner Overdrive correct
- 40:59Speaker 1: as Barry in the uptown five. Right, that's right, that's right.
- 41:05Speaker 10: This scene was arresting when it happened in the theater,
- 41:11Speaker 10: Like Jack Black is like Nolan Ryan in the Ninth
- 41:16Speaker 10: Inning and they're like, dude.
- 41:20Speaker 1: You just threw a no hitter. Go rest. He's like,
- 41:22Speaker 1: fuck that.
- 41:23Speaker 11: Yeah, it's extra innings and he comes out and he
- 41:25Speaker 11: strikes out the side. Yeah, like Jack Black. It's it's
- 41:29Speaker 11: like he's already given you so much. And then I
- 41:33Speaker 11: don't know if that's in the script. I have to
- 41:34Speaker 11: see if that's in the script. It's most certainly not
- 41:36Speaker 11: in the movie. I don't think the scene where the
- 41:39Speaker 11: guy it would be too perfect, right, it would be
- 41:41Speaker 11: too perfect for.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Them to cast him and for him to kill it
- 41:44Speaker 1: like this. I see this in my head as like
- 41:46Speaker 1: he was like, you know I can sing, you know
- 41:48Speaker 1: what I mean? It just like proved himself on the set,
- 41:50Speaker 1: like right, give me this.
- 41:52Speaker 3: You know they were looking at already Lang for this
- 41:54Speaker 3: role before they got Jack Black.
- 41:56Speaker 1: They were for fucking stuttering John is Rob Like what
- 42:00Speaker 1: the fuck?
- 42:01Speaker 5: Really?
- 42:02Speaker 1: All right, guys, that's the high fidelity episode of this
- 42:05Speaker 1: film should be played loud. Make sure you are a
- 42:07Speaker 1: Patreon subscriber. So you can cop that. Every month I
- 42:10Speaker 1: get a bone to pick with an Apple user who
- 42:14Speaker 1: goes by the name pave meant spelled pa capital ve
- 42:20Speaker 1: me slash and t now. Pavement writes in the reviews
- 42:25Speaker 1: no less five stars, thank you, Okay, appreciate that, I
- 42:29Speaker 1: really do, then goes on to say it would like
- 42:31Speaker 1: to hear a few more obscure artists. But good fair,
- 42:36Speaker 1: But I just want to point out today's episode. Okay,
- 42:40Speaker 1: Ian Watkins from Lost Prophets, and I might direct user
- 42:44Speaker 1: known as Pavement to our archive of over two hundred
- 42:47Speaker 1: and seventy episodes to check out episodes by obscure artists
- 42:52Speaker 1: like Johnny Paycheck gg Allen. That's it. Those are the
- 42:56Speaker 1: only No. I'm just kidding. Ta K forty seven is
- 42:58Speaker 1: a DJ Michael Alec lots of obscure artists. In fact,
- 43:05Speaker 1: I kind of think we have more obscure artists, but
- 43:07Speaker 1: then it's all relative. You know, some people would tell
- 43:10Speaker 1: you that depeche Mode is an obscure artist, which is
- 43:12Speaker 1: just ludicrous to think. Listen Pavement. If you need help
- 43:15Speaker 1: finding these, get in touch. Appreciate the review. You'll be
- 43:19Speaker 1: happy to know Pavement that we have an episode on
- 43:21Speaker 1: Wendy O Williams coming up. Okay, it's gonna pair nicely
- 43:24Speaker 1: with Adele. You know, see what we're doing. There got
- 43:26Speaker 1: one huge artists, one not so huge artists. Happy mondays
- 43:30Speaker 1: the bags. These are all common In the next few months,
- 43:32Speaker 1: It's gonna be a good summer here in Disgracelane. You're
- 43:34Speaker 1: gonna be happy, I promise you. Morbid Girly over on
- 43:37Speaker 1: Apple writes, Disgraceland is one of my favorite shows. Always
- 43:39Speaker 1: comes through a new information, interesting facts that aren't common knowledge.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Jake tells us each story with passion and really helps
- 43:45Speaker 1: the listener in vision the lifestyle and experience of each band, artist, legend,
- 43:50Speaker 1: and does it with class. Thanks for all you do
- 43:52Speaker 1: to help us remember the stars from past and present.
- 43:54Speaker 1: You got it, Morbid Girly, I appreciate that. Get in
- 43:56Speaker 1: touch six p one seven nine oh six six six
- 43:59Speaker 1: three eight YouTube. You got some merch in the mail
- 44:01Speaker 1: for those wonderful reviews. I want to read some of
- 44:05Speaker 1: these dms from you guys over on Instagram at discrisempod,
- 44:09Speaker 1: we made a little real about what we were talking
- 44:11Speaker 1: about in the after party last week about how Jim
- 44:14Speaker 1: Morrison died, and there's this theory we went through it.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I'm not going to go through the whole thing here again,
- 44:19Speaker 1: but the theory that you know, Jim didn't die from
- 44:21Speaker 1: shooting heroin on purpose, that Jim mistakenly took heroin that
- 44:26Speaker 1: was Pam's his girlfriends that he thought was cocaine. And
- 44:29Speaker 1: we went into the whole thing how the heroin was
- 44:31Speaker 1: pink so it could have been mistaken for cocaine, her
- 44:35Speaker 1: connections to the count all that. So I made a
- 44:38Speaker 1: little video about it, put it up, and I was
- 44:39Speaker 1: very very clear about it not being my necessarily my opinion,
- 44:44Speaker 1: but just this is the thing that people in the
- 44:45Speaker 1: know are talking about, and myle my, have people lost
- 44:48Speaker 1: their fucking minds about this? I want to read some
- 44:52Speaker 1: of the I don't know what it is. It's like
- 44:55Speaker 1: you just if it's something different with the medium mediums
- 44:59Speaker 1: in podcast format like this, I can have this conversation
- 45:02Speaker 1: with you. Guys. You're not there, but I can see you,
- 45:05Speaker 1: and I trust you. I trust you to know the
- 45:07Speaker 1: nuance of what I'm talking about. I trust you to
- 45:09Speaker 1: understand where I'm coming from, what my point of view
- 45:12Speaker 1: is versus information that I'm just sort of presenting from
- 45:16Speaker 1: other people. But it's just you put any any anything
- 45:20Speaker 1: up against your image on social media and people just
- 45:23Speaker 1: they just they don't even hear it. They don't even
- 45:26Speaker 1: hear the reality, the truth of what you're saying. They
- 45:28Speaker 1: actually the actual words. They do not hear. They hear
- 45:32Speaker 1: what they want to hear, and they are pissed and
- 45:34Speaker 1: they just want to yell. They just want to scream.
- 45:37Speaker 1: And I kind of love it. But a lot of
- 45:40Speaker 1: you dug this story, and a lot of you, like
- 45:43Speaker 1: cutting Zeo says can't wait, like the Glasses, and another
- 45:45Speaker 1: one Cannibal Crunch right saying, Hey, looking forward to this episode.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Love your podcast. Jay McNeely never knew this story or
- 45:51Speaker 1: all the connections, not like me. I guess I've been
- 45:54Speaker 1: under a rock, not crack, and a lot of people
- 45:56Speaker 1: are into this story, this idea of this theory. I
- 46:00Speaker 1: was fairly convinced last week when we talked about it,
- 46:02Speaker 1: that I was going to do an episode on this.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Now I am hyper convinced we will be doing an
- 46:07Speaker 1: episode on Jim Morrison and the count and the cause
- 46:11Speaker 1: of Jim Morrison's death. I'm going to dig and dig
- 46:13Speaker 1: and dig and try and find more of this stuff,
- 46:15Speaker 1: more beyond Marianne Faithful's commentary at disgracelam pod on the socials.
- 46:21Speaker 1: You want to get in touch and talk about anything,
- 46:23Speaker 1: I'm here for it. Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com.
- 46:28Speaker 1: If you want to send me an email John McNeely
- 46:31Speaker 1: Wright saying, hey, is a David episode in the works
- 46:35Speaker 1: and that's D four VD and there absolutely is. I'm
- 46:40Speaker 1: waiting for this case to be finalized and then we'll
- 46:43Speaker 1: be dipping into that for sure. Disgracelampod at gmail dot com.
- 46:48Speaker 1: You guys want to get in touch, talk about anything
- 46:50Speaker 1: at all, hit me up now. As I mentioned earlier,
- 46:54Speaker 1: Zeth and I are going to dive fully into this
- 46:56Speaker 1: list top thirty greatest living American artist from the point
- 47:00Speaker 1: of view the New York Times, and we're gonna talk
- 47:02Speaker 1: about the artists who were not on this list. It's
- 47:05Speaker 1: enough to send you straight up the poll man. Man,
- 47:09Speaker 1: this list, it's weird. This is one of those lists
- 47:11Speaker 1: where I met I said this earlier, and I meant it.
- 47:13Speaker 1: In a way I completely get the list. In a way,
- 47:16Speaker 1: I have almost no arguments with it. But then the
- 47:19Speaker 1: other in another way, I can just sit here and
- 47:20Speaker 1: argue about I can give you eazillion reasons why ten
- 47:24Speaker 1: other folks should be on this list who aren't on
- 47:26Speaker 1: the list. It's going to shock you who's not on
- 47:28Speaker 1: this list? Actually disgrace sampod dot com. Become an all
- 47:31Speaker 1: Access member to check this out. Talking in a minute otherwise,
- 47:34Speaker 1: see you on the other side. A guys, we mentioned
- 47:48Speaker 1: a ton of artists on this episode, as we do
- 47:50Speaker 1: every week. We did it with a little more structure
- 47:53Speaker 1: this week than we do usually. We talked about Ice Tea,
- 47:58Speaker 1: Rick James, Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, and Billie Holiday. Those
- 48:03Speaker 1: were our top five most surprising true crimes from artists,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and Matt is going to have the episode information on
- 48:09Speaker 1: those stories in the show notes this episode so that
- 48:12Speaker 1: you can easily navigate to them. And no, we didn't
- 48:14Speaker 1: do an entire episode on ic T being a jewel
- 48:17Speaker 1: thief or an entire episode on Billie Holiday's dog delivering drugs.
- 48:20Speaker 1: These are just smaller stories set in the larger story,
- 48:24Speaker 1: all right, So check that out now, let's recap, shall
- 48:27Speaker 1: we Number one? This week? Ian Watkins from Lost Profits.
- 48:30Speaker 1: That's our new episode. You can hear that, right, now

- 48:36Speaker 1: and two of our Sean Diddy Comb's story. Okay, number

- 48:49Speaker 1: Sheen madness this week and you can hear my music
- 48:52Speaker 1: Rex in the wrap party. Number five. This film should
- 48:54Speaker 1: be played loud. Our video podcast episode this month on

- 49:08Speaker 1: question of the week, or with whatever else you want
- 49:09Speaker 1: to talk about. Number seven. Don't forget this goes. This
- 49:12Speaker 1: isn't just content. It's a community, a community of the obsessed,
- 49:15Speaker 1: the musically obsessed. Nobody cares about music, books, records and
- 49:19Speaker 1: the crime and grime. It ties them all together like
- 49:21Speaker 1: you do. And well that's a disgrace, all right. Back
- 49:23Speaker 1: in September twenty twelve, Mega disgrace, Ian Walkins from Lost
- 49:27Speaker 1: Profits was arrested for unspeakable crimes, and here's what America
