- 0:00What is going on?
- 0:01LnM Family, Jesse here coming at you with my very first solo cast.
- 0:07So if you've been here before, welcome back.
- 0:09And if you're new, this is the learnings and missteps podcast.
- 0:12What we typically interview amazing people that have built careers in the construction industry.
- 0:18For the purpose of enhancing the image of careers in the trades.
- 0:23And so we're testing now running a couple of experiments.
- 0:26And, and this solo cast is the first of many to come.
- 0:31And yeah.
- 0:31So what I want to talk about.
- 0:33Is the phrase, just be yourself.
- 0:37I'm not sure if anyone's ever told you that, but I've heard it.
- 0:40I've even told people that in my patch, I like people that are caught up stuck, frustrated.
- 0:45With where they're at in life.
- 0:47And the best thing I could tell them is we'll just be yourself.
- 0:51now.
- 0:52I know when I've heard that, it's like, what in the world does that even mean?
- 0:58Um, so I've been thinking a lot about that.
- 1:01Especially.
- 1:01Cause I was like, okay, I'm going to do a solo cast or I want to infused solo casts into, the menu of what we've been providing through this podcast.
- 1:11Uh, and, and.
- 1:13For a hot minute, those dots came in, like, what should it be?
- 1:16What are people going to say?
- 1:18What are people going to think?
- 1:19So on and so forth.
- 1:21And that brought me to the idea of, well, just be yourself.
- 1:25Well, like again, what does that mean?
- 1:28and so to start.
- 1:30The thought that helped me get some traction around how can we help each other?
- 1:35Understand what we mean by just be yourself.
- 1:39And for me.
- 1:40It's really a matter of me not making decisions.
- 1:44Based on what I think.
- 1:47Other people might think it's like the operative words there are think, and might write.
- 1:55'cause, I don't really know what anybody else is gonna think.
- 1:57I can't know what people are going to think.
- 1:59I can make some assumptions about what they possibly may think about whatever it is I'm doing.
- 2:06Um, or what it is they think about me.
- 2:09But I don't know.
- 2:11so the likelihood that they're going to think the absolute worst thing possible, the worst situation that I'm concocting in my head is very, very low.
- 2:23Uh, and the only way to know is to do the damn thing, right.
- 2:26Now the problem with getting caught up in what other people might think is it's like all consuming.
- 2:34Because there are so many variations of what anybody can think.
- 2:38and for me, Uh, I'm going to assume that some of y'all out there are like me or have been in this situation where you start down that road of.
- 2:46Well, what if so-and-so is going to say this and what if this and what if that, and, and then the road just gets more slippery.
- 2:53Uh, as we start considering all of the things that could possibly be from a negative perspective.
- 3:00and then when I actually do the thing, right, so now I've said, okay, what's everybody think, what are they going to say?
- 3:05What should I wear?
- 3:06How did.
- 3:07And then I contort my behavior.
- 3:10To attempt to avoid all of those.
- 3:13Um, negative consequences of the action.
- 3:16And then I get feedback because we're always going to get feedback.
- 3:19Sometimes the feedback is in the form of like the side-eye, right?
- 3:23Like what.
- 3:23They kind of squinch their eyebrows.
- 3:25You're like, oh man, they're judging me right now.
- 3:27and inside me, when I see that it hurts.
- 3:30I don't know why they're squinching or eyebrow, but.
- 3:34Because I contorted my behavior and my thinking and my direction and my message and everything else.
- 3:40I am now like super hypersensitive.
- 3:43Why?
- 3:44Because I did all of those acrobatics to gain approval and any signal other than approval Hertz.
- 3:52Uh, and creates a void, right?
- 3:54It starts chipping away at my self-esteem starts chipping away at my confidence, and leaves me in a state of feeling like I'm just never good enough.
- 4:02Now importantly, let's stay on track because I don't want you to go into them.
- 4:06Dark places.
- 4:08The fact is all of that began with me.
- 4:11It all started by me.
- 4:13Uh, attempting to fit some.
- 4:18Mold.
- 4:20That I'm assuming.
- 4:22That I created in my own mind.
- 4:26And so what does that mean?
- 4:27Well, it means that I can actually create any mold that I want.
- 4:32Right.
- 4:32So yes, things can be negative.
- 4:34Things can be horrible.
- 4:36We can be embarrassing.
- 4:38And what else could also be true?
- 4:42It could be awesome.
- 4:43It could be impactful.
- 4:44It could be meaning it could be inspirational.
- 4:47So, all I have to do is learn how to do that.
- 4:50Now that's a little tougher.
- 4:52Like that one, I don't have the secret recipe for.
- 4:55What I do know is that I've gotten better about it through repetition.
- 4:59Getting the reps in doing it funky.
- 5:02I had a conversation with my buddy, Sean Moran, shout out Sharelle was so baby boomer.
- 5:06And we were talking about this, you know, the amount of energy and effort we put into polishing things up so that they can be perfect.
- 5:13And everybody's going to be blown away.
- 5:15Gets you stuck.
- 5:16And then when you do the thing.
- 5:18At the end of the delivery.
- 5:20The really most important thing is, you know, how you performed.
- 5:25I have never been there have been very, very few times that I've done a thing.
- 5:31And was completely content.
- 5:33With my delivery of it the first time.
- 5:36every time I do something, I find something that I can Polish something that I want to make better because.
- 5:42Because I know I can do it better.
- 5:46But the only way to find that out is by doing the damn thing again.
- 5:50So, how do I create the model?
- 5:52The form that I want to take, that's going to bring me.
- 5:57The greatest amount of joy and free me from all of that misery, all of that.
- 6:02Head garbage that's that quickly consumes us.
- 6:05So for me, it's two questions.
- 6:07How do I want to serve?
- 6:09Right.
- 6:10Like what.
- 6:11What is the emotion?
- 6:12What is the impact?
- 6:14Uh, what is the value that I want to deliver to the person or people?
- 6:20What do I want that to look like?
- 6:22And because I have this wild imagination that can paint dark, scary pictures.
- 6:27I can also paint.
- 6:28Awesome, colorful, exciting pictures.
- 6:31And okay.
- 6:31That's what I want things to look like.
- 6:33I want people to be engaged.
- 6:34I want people to laugh.
- 6:36Uh, want them to, to experience some sentiment and I want to be a catalyst for change.
- 6:42Awesome.
- 6:43Okay.
- 6:43That's part one.
- 6:44Part two, what brings me fulfillment?
- 6:48Well, when people demonstrate that I've had the impact that I wanted to have.
- 6:52And so if that's the model.
- 6:56Then all I have to do is put my energy towards that and then really give myself some grace.
- 7:01Because I know that even after I do it.
- 7:04And some of y'all like, if you don't know me, I like to capture video of me doing the stuff that I do because I review it and it helps me get better.
- 7:13I can find things that I want to improve on.
- 7:15And what that does is it takes.
- 7:19All my insecurities, like those little hot buttons that my, my precious, delicate little heart is, is covered in.
- 7:28It takes them away from everybody else.
- 7:31And the only one that can push those buttons is me.
- 7:34And when I pushed those buttons, I can use that as fuel and energy to make the thing.
- 7:41The way I want it to be.
- 7:44And whatever that is.
- 7:45Is it my shoes?
- 7:46Is it my suit?
- 7:47Is it my haircut?
- 7:48Is it the speech?
- 7:49Is it the PowerPoint?
- 7:50Is it the meeting agenda?
- 7:52Like.
- 7:53When I'm making my decisions based on what I'm guessing, other people might think.
- 7:59And so next time you hear somebody tell you, just be yourself.
- 8:03Maybe these questions will help you.
- 8:04How do you want to serve?
- 8:06And what brings you fulfillment?
- 8:08Uh, so let that little kind of flippant.
- 8:11Just be, you just be your best self.
- 8:15Be a trigger like, oh, how do I want to serve what brings me the most fulfillment?
- 8:20because I have experienced.
- 8:22MI like the best version of me.
- 8:25Has come from me finally, understanding.
- 8:28How I best serve.
- 8:31And then putting my energy towards that.
- 8:33Now.
- 8:34like one last.
- 8:36Stinky truth is even though I know how I best serve, and that's how I make my decisions and frame, whatever it is I want to do going up going forward.
- 8:45That doesn't mean everybody's going to like it.
- 8:47Like this Jessie flavor ain't for everybody.
- 8:51And that is okay.
- 8:52And I had to learn how to get okay.
- 8:55With people not choosing me.
- 8:58And guess what?
- 8:59That's okay.
- 9:00So rather than like trying to get everybody to pick me.
- 9:04I know it's like Baskin Robbins out there.
- 9:06There's a bunch of people to pick from.
- 9:08You don't have to pick me.
- 9:09You can pick somebody else.
- 9:10And we could still be friends.
- 9:11We could still be humans.
- 9:12We could still make impact on other people's lives.
- 9:15So I'm wondering how do you best serve?
- 9:17What brings you the most fulfillment?
- 9:20Like how much time have you spent thinking about that?
- 9:23the energy that you put into discovering the answers to those questions.
- 9:28We'll bring you greater reward.
- 9:31And helps you shift.
- 9:33The current dark place or you may have been putting all that beautiful energy of yours.
- 9:38And so another confession, another thing that, that I'm putting out there into the world, that, that I am a little concerned about, but.
- 9:44Because I already have proof that it is causing impact.
- 9:48That is being a catalyst for change in people's lives.
- 9:51I said, heck with it, I'm going to pull the trigger and it see what happens.
- 9:54So here in the very near future today, it's August 24th, 2023.
- 9:59I'm going to be tinkering around with creating my very first E book.
- 10:05Uh, it's going to be the electronic version of becoming the promise.
- 10:09You are intended to be.
- 10:11So be ready.
- 10:11I'll be, I'll be posting a bunch of stuff about that.
- 10:14Planning like a pre-order.
- 10:16Thing.
- 10:17Uh, to get some energy out there.
- 10:20I'm going to price it super cheap at like 3 99, because, because it's a digital thing, right.
- 10:25and the purpose of that is to make it super, super accessible to people because.
- 10:31the folks that have read the hard copy.
- 10:34A bunch of people who've reached out to me and shared how it's impacting their lives.
- 10:38And some, some of those reach-outs have become very deep.
- 10:42conversations about making significant life changes.
- 10:47and if I can contribute to that into some, in some way, That's what I'm here for.
- 10:53Uh, so be cool.
- 10:54And we'll talk at you next time.
