- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: The Hallm opener means football and Puesto.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Mejkato, Moderna, the Restrate Home Games means three weeks in a row for you to try out.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Puesto.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: They are in Levi's Stadium between section C1-16 and C1-17.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: This is concourse level near midfield.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: On the east side of the stadium, the Adler brothers are huge nine of fans.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: They come to games at home, and on the road, and I've been telling you about West Coast forever.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: They've got two locations in the Bay Area locations in Southern California.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's phenomenal food.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to get better stadium food than this because it's not stadium food.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's just great.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: You get the Puesto Classic guacamole, the Puesto Cheese, not Chose, and of course the tacos, either chicken, Verde, with the braised chicken rolled and Puesto's signature crispy cheese salsa cruda with pickled onions and cilantro, and you can also get the short rib barbecue, the short rib wrapped in signature crispy cheese, chili, manzano, salsa, barbecue, sauce and slaw.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: And they got not shows and then you can either have the chicken or the barbecue short rib.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: The barbecue short rib tacos are a Levi state and exclusive so get it at the game.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: This week, thank you to Puesto for sponsoring the show.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: What's up guys?
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Guy here coming up on the show today from America.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think everyone's looking at the wrong play, I'll show you the play he actually got initially heard on plus up to the start video.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's the new honey badger and a booth tour from the MCG, those of you watching on YouTube, I brought home a MCG model.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: and put the Niners Ram Stadium grass inside of it.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: So that'll be here now with me forever.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Plus, what the Niners should never, ever, ever do again with Mike Evans, they did it in the Ram's game and learned their lesson.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: and something very interesting.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a me a storyline every week with 49ers.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's all coming up on the show.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: The first thing we had to talk about, and there's so much to talk about, I didn't do a reaction after the game, had to hustle to the bus, and then go to the terminal.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: We went through the public, you go through the terminal.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers, all of them, we're going through security at the Melbourne.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: airport.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: I did read some comments on one of my previous videos and and the people in Melbourne appreciated the Melbourne pronunciation, right?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think Melbourne, trying to get it right because it was just an unbelievable host city.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: The MCG 100,000 people was an unbelievable place.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: We loved every second.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you guys a booth tour from the MCG, what our broadcast booth looked like.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Kyle Shannon had said, was asked during the week.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: if it felt like a super ball.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: He said, no, you know, I'm in the hotel.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, I don't get out.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't feel like that.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think he must have...
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: I certainly, I've not been to a Super Bowl, but it felt like a Super Bowl to me right before kick off.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: They had both anthems and, you know, I think anybody you watch these videos of like, of hockey games and you see the whole crowd singing and Anthem, the whole crowd singing, the Anthem was
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: it gives you chills gives me chills right now just thinking about it and then you have the flyover and the pyotechnics and you know we were on the air when that happened on radio calling the game with Tim Ryan on can VR, 40 dinners, radio and I don't think you could hear it, I didn't say much, I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Choked up a cut did not choked up but like weld up a couple of times.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: It was I don't know why Maybe just because I knew it felt special.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think we'd been there a week you just have all this build up
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: I joked with people during the week like it felt like it was week 15 because you had so much build up for this game and there were so many times you have build up for a game and then it just looks and feels like any other game.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: This to me did not look or feel like any other game.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how it felt to you watching on Netflix.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: I watched
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: the game back.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: The T rock Tim Ryan gets the old 22 immediately and I sit behind him on the plane.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: So I just was leaning on the seat as he's going through the tape.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I watch it that way.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: But then I really wanted to watch the telecast to see how it felt to you.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it felt different.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think part of it was the light like it was a it's 10 30 AM it did not feel like 10 30 AM there I thought it would feel like 10 30 AM when that game kicked off It didn't it didn't feel as early maybe because on the body clock You know, we were waking up not on the body clock on the real clock I've been waking up at like 430 every day anyway so by the time you got to 10 30
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like early afternoon, but I didn't feel like 10.30 a.m.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think there was so much energy, you know, I've done like college football games that are noon kickoffs and like 90 and Pacific noon Eastern type games, and they don't have nearly as much energy.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: as this had, you know, we interviewed for radio, Tim and I interviewed Roger Gdell on the field before the game.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that gets the blood pumping a little bit and, you know, he was great and, of course, of course, Tim knows him and golf with him at Cyprus because, of course, Tim Ryan is like the the anonymous celebrity.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: but it was it was so special before kickoff.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: You could just feel it.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously the field looked different.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like it must have looked through the locals the way a ping-pong table looks to a tennis player.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: If you play tennis, you play tennis, you play tennis, you play tennis, you go to a ping-pong table and this field looked so small.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: But in the booth tour in the video,
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: that I'm showing.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: It actually looks closer.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: You were low.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly the best seats were not going to be, you know, sideline first rows.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe end zones, a little higher.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: That was better.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: But you would just, everything felt so cool.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Chris and Bright and the colors looked amazing and the paint looked great and the grass.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: They said it was the same grass from the practice field, but this grass looked I thought thicker.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's gonna be two more games in Melbourne.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's contracted.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: You wonder, you know, before the trip that I had, I was like, we can't believe the Rams volunteered us for this.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: The Rams dispute that, and I don't know what's true, but that's what the Niders were saying, right?
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: And now you wonder what they've volunteered to go back.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think they would happily volunteer another ram's home game to go back.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, you know, you got to figure this the next time around.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if the NFL can mandate that you got to go for a week.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think clearly in Kyle said this and you could see it coming.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: Whoever won this game, people were going to say, well, they did it the right way.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what if somebody won the game 20, 7, 23?
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: How would you know, it's not what happened.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners dominated the Rams, blew them out.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: It was not a four quarter game.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: The paper airplanes start flying from the upper deck early and they were big paper airplanes and some of them flew far and some of them were just
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: nailing people in the back, but the feeling that we had there was unbelievable, and I felt like we experienced it traveling with the nineners flying with the team, because we were there for a week.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: And the nineners had an organizational presence there.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: for a week and there's nothing that says you have to wait to the players get there to have an organizational presence there and there you saw a couple of Raiders logos i mean they have marketing rights in the area and there's a seahawks bar they have rights in the area and the ramps have rights in the area i don't see how if you were an undecided local you could be anything but a 49ers fan after the week it just felt like going to coffee shops going to restaurant just walking i walked
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: You want to who saw Melbourne?
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: I saw Melbourne.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: I want 49 miles in my seven days in Melbourne.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: Not counting the orange theory and Hawthorne that I went to on the treadmill.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: Not counting.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: hotel tread, where the real, where the real grinders work out, 49 real street miles.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: It did that does count 18 holes at Commonwealth Golf Club where the people were amazing.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks to Matt Mayoco, who has a buddy who hooked us up and met and invited me to play along with him in Nick Wagner and Cameron.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that course was amazing.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: And the people were awesome.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: And they turned the Seahawks game on and a bunch of the guys kept walking by going, why are we watching?
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: Why is this on the
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: There was a man there who is 99 years old, his name's Cliff Riley.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: He has a wiki.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: He like played in the AFL and played cricket and was in World War II and is just beloved that this golf club and he was sitting there reading a magazine when we sat down and he said, I've watched more American football in the last two minutes that have in my entire life.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's 99.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: But he was I love they use a word there a lot lovely.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: He was lovely everyone was lovely Everyone was so welcoming and kind and just wanted to talk and share the city and say hello and
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: it was so cool and they all also said the same thing every person every nobody said ha I wonder I'm being sincere I'm not picking aside here even though I could everyone is but just to be down the middle I'm just going to say I'm just going to tell you not a person said you know it'll be interesting to see which teams
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: philosophy on travel works.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: None of them said that.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: They all said some version of one of the Rams doing.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Every single one of them.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: So they all had to take on it.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I think part of it was like my senses, they it felt to them.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: Understandably and look you just got to do it McVay.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't blame McVay.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is what he thinks.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: Although I know Kawakami suggested maybe they were just kind of like throwing it away But if he thinks it's going to work because his work for them.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean he's he hadn't lost it in a national game Obviously going going there is different than going there right there not all trips London and Melbourne They're not all created equal But I think people there just because the Niners were there for a week and the Niners are getting the exposure and the players are around on the alumni around and the events are around
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: They felt like the Niners sincerely cared about making a good impression.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: And how could you not?
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: It is a gateway to a whole other world for the NFL.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: 38 different countries, it's not just the first game in Australia, is the first game.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: in the entire Asia-Pacific region, regular season game, and that's very valuable to the NFL.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think people go like, okay, there's going to be two more games in Australia, the 2028 Olympics are in LA, and then the Olympics after that are in Brisbane, like the potential flag, the summer Olympics, whether it be flag football, so that matters to the NFL a lot, a lot.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they wanted to make sure, and we asked,
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Roger Gadell, no way he said you have to ask this or ask that, it was cool and Trock knows him and so we had a great welcome and Roger was very engaged, but one of the things they clearly, they want to make people aware of his flag football, it's a big deal to them.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, playing that game there, 30, 38 different countries, people bought tickets to the game from 38 different countries.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, and I don't know, I'd be interested to see the Vendagram, how many of those people also buy tickets to
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: games in the United States.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a wild success.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think talking to people on the field before the game, it felt like the week has been a wild success.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing else left to do was to win the football game in the 49ers won the game.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: We had a great booth, people asked me like, how's the booth here?
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: you know the stadium is almost 200 years old got remodeled I said in a previous video that blew up a lot of Australians commented on it that the stadium under one recent renovation and somebody said well 2006 is not that recent and I you know I guess that's true the stadium feels in many ways very modern
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: If you're almost 200 years old, 2006 is relatively recent, but I could see, if you're in there, you'd go, well, there are a bunch of things that you could update, but really, I mean, it felt extremely new and modern and beautiful.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Our broadcast location was great.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: It was better than a lot of, it was better than our broadcast location, it's so far where you're kind of in the corner.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: Here we were around the 35 yard line and low, but not too low, and it's a three tiered box.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: I actually funny enough.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: found, you know, I call a game off an iPad.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: I used to print out a board, but now I put my spotting board on an iPad, that's why they've last year, and I've been looking for something bigger, because I've seen, you know, like, Tureko uses like a 32 inch touchscreen.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: And it's that's prohibitive to travel and there's not really a lot of them.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think the thing he uses is kind of out of data.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a Microsoft out of data sense.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's not in production.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: You can buy it second hand for like five, six thousand dollars.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I was looking and there's not many solutions.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it just so happens.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: that there's an Australian company.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: This is not a sponsored video.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it is, but not by this company.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: They said, you don't have to say anything, just use it, and it's called espresso.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a 17 inch touchscreen.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: So it's larger than my iPad, and I set it up in the booth, and I use it, and it's really compact, because the stand folds magnetically, and I was showing it to people, like this thing is cool.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, so thanks to the people at espresso, they didn't ask for an ad, they didn't ask for anything.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: But you guys know me if I use something,
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: And so I did, but it's an Australian company.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, hey, I'm coming to Australia.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, let's give you one.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: So that was the icing on the cake.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: So that was really cool.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: That was really cool.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: So check them out, espresso.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you're so much we could talk about from the game, but or I guess around the game, not over the game.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: I also put it on YouTube video of us leaving the stadium because it was, I think probably that we had some really good day.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: There was like one day we're kind of rained, otherwise we had amazing days in Melbourne, and when we left it was, it was, it was,
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: The day that the game was played was beautiful and leaving the stadium.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: I put the video in just to give you some sense of what the stadium look, what the city looks like.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's just, yeah, I can't say that good things.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was a gem, it was a gem of a place and I hope we go back, I hope to go back, I really do.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: Travel back was, not that bad, you know, I think a 17 hour flight or a 14 hour flight is more intimidating in theory and then you do it, you're like, oh yeah.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: With traveling on a charter is different than traveling, like in 68D, right?
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: We each had our own row.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: This is an A380.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's a double decker.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: It holds over 400 people.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: Both teams had the same planes.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: The Rams got to leave first because as the home team, they got to leave first.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: They also loaded up quick by the time we got to the terminal to the gate.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: The Rams had already loaded on their plan, and you know, functionally, you understand, maybe they did a little less post game media.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: uh... they have us luggage we'll you know there's like a week's worth of luggage to load up
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that was a factor, or maybe they just moved quicker knowing that they had the first flight out.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: So, but we each got, you know, a road to ourselves and the plane was plenty big and it was a fun flight home.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Was it a time zone when we'll see?
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think before Kyle Shanahan can definitively answer the question we'd love to do it again, we got to see how this week goes.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: The travel itself actually, my report is, it's not the hard part.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's like today, Sunday, when you I slept poorly, you know, that's the challenging part, but you play the game on a Thursday, you got a Thursday here, so you get home on a Friday.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think the real next, the final evaluation for the 49ers will be how do they feel this week, when Wednesday rolls around, or they back to normal, how do they feel in the game on Sunday, those sorts of things, but all in all,
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: Before I go on and get to some rea, it's time to get to some meat, some football evaluation meat, but I want to thank the sponsor, Volvo, Cars, Marin, Matt Gordon and his team.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: were awesome to work with.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: I am back baby at home driving my XC90 TA.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's a plug-in hybrid from Volvo Cars Marine.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you are looking for a new or used Volvo, look no further than Volvo Cars Marine, they will take great care of you.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: They have a great selection.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: They're very informative.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're very patient.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to get pressured.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: You want to chat?
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: You want to look at a car?
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: You want to look at a car?
- 17:16[UNKNOWN]: You
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: fine.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to get pushed.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, they really make it wonderful.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: So Volvo cars Marin go check them out.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks to Matt and his team.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: They are great and we love, uh, we love our Volvo.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, let's get to football.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: As I said, you know, I think it's going to be easy to chalk it up to a time zone win.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: The body wasn't just that the body's weren't adjusted.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: And the reality is we don't know.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think to say it was because of rest is to reduce the value, how good this 40w team looked.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: They looked excellent.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: And they should look excellent.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: They could easily have looked that good at so-fi stadium or at Levi Stadium.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Look at their players.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Look at the plan they had.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: like a lot of things went well and I and I said I thought when Kyle Shanahan spoke at a press conference in Melbourne I was like that's the best he looked.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's the it's the most well rested he looked it's the most confident looked it was the most like himself he'd been coming back from the car crash that was slow I think he was really apprehensive about the trip I think once he got through the the the first flight and he felt good and he saw that his players felt good.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: it was clear that he had his swag back.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think he believed in their plan.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: We see why.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think he believed in Rahim Morris.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: We see why.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: Rahim was one of the stars.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: There were a lot of stars on this trip, but I want to run through them.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think one thing that really stood out was how indecisive, right?
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: Here's Matthew Staffer, he knows the offense so well, he is so dialed in and he spent a lot of time patting the ball at one point at the half, he was four of 11.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: For the game he was three of 10 for 74 yards within interception on throws that were 10 or more yards downfield on deeper throws, he was 20 yards and more, he was over three
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, but Nick Bosa I thought was dominant in the run game Fred Warner back was dominant looked like the freak that Fred Warner is and was a great combo with Drake Greenlaw.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I thought they made an offense that's a well-old machine looking fused.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: And we spent a lot of time, a lot of time, talking about 13 personnel and how the Rams were on a ton of 13 personnel and how they, you know, changed the game.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the reality is that for themselves they changed the game.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: everybody else can kind of change the game like they ran 13 personal way more twice as much as anybody else last year and you have to have certain personnel like you got to have puka as you're receiver that's out there or divante as you're receiver that's out there to really make it work and you know then the nanners through a curveball and had everything covered and you looked at a 1.10 rinds like oh jack shows out there so up and stout isn't and then he goes no up and stout is out there and you could I could hear him processing
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it just made it so difficult for the Rams.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there's so many things you see.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: I call the game through the binoculars or something as you know.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: And one thing you try to do, pre-snap is identify the weapons, right?
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: So you go, I go like, all right, there's Evans, there's Debo, there's Christian, there's Kiddle, got it, right?
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: And when you do it with the Rams, as effective as 13 is, I go through the binoculars, I go, okay, there's
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: Puka, and there's their backs or good, there's Kyron Williams, and they got three tight ends out there.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: And like, while effective mostly, it's not their most talented, divantes off the field.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, okay, you feel kind of good when divantes off the field.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a credit to Reheem.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was I'm sure such a mine band, the whole off season, for him and for McVay, as well as they know each other,
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: To figure out like, what's the other guy going to do?
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: I joked McFey's not going to run any 13.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he did.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: But what's the other guy going to do it?
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: How am I going to combat it?
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it was.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: and he was worth his waiting gold.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just was such a, I think part of what was fun about it is you go, we spent all this time talking about five down, five down, five down, line men, and that was not the story of this game.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_00]: The story of the game was how we used his defense of backs using an extra defensive back, essentially.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: In key moments and to create big plays and to really, to force Matt's use tab, you could just see him patting the ball and patting the ball, and patting the ball,
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, I mean, I don't want to say it was perfect, because they got, they were getting gashed in the run game before that Renardo Green Interception, and that thing changed the whole game, right?
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: Brock threw on the pick, and then the Rams responding, pounding the rock, and then Renardo Green picking off Matthew Stafford.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a, not perfect defensive game.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think you still look at the tires and gosh, this, the interior defensive line,
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: is thin after the Alfred Collins injury, even thinner.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: At times getting pushed around inside, but once they were able to play with the lead, they were, and the Rams would have been the same.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like if the Rams were able to play with the lead, then they were going to run the ball down the 49er starts and that wasn't going to be a problem.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: but the night is able to play with the lead and as it turns out, that effectively ended the game, which leads us to Christian McAfrey.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I set out at the top of the show, there's gonna be some key things.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: What to never do again with Mike Evans, astrubling update, an up-to-instout update and this Christian McAfrey story that I think is gonna be really significant.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a position that Christian McAfrey has never been in before.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know what, before I do that though, I do wanna, for those of you watching, up-to-stout.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: this just because I was just talking about defense this guy feels like the new honey badger for if you're watching and not listening in the podcast it if you're listening there's some video in the youtube so click on the link in the description and go watch the this youtube but there is the first four basically four five plays I think actually it's like play five six seven eight maybe up and stow
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: is just messing with everybody.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: He is in the mix constantly.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: Honey Badger, Tyron, I'm not saying he's Tyron Matthew, I'm just saying he's a different type of player with the same honey Badger spirit.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: Undaunted, unafraid, unintimidated, matched by Fred Warner.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: I said in camp, you know, Fred, Fred talks a lot.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: When they had joint practices, Upton was right there with them and it's like Upton has been given.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: the clearance to like, hey man, you know, be yourself, be a problem, be a pain in the neck, and he is an excellent player.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to go so far as to say agitator because that seems hollow.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: When someone says play through the whistle, up and stout plays through the whistle.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: So it's blocking Jordan Whittington.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: or getting blocked by Jordan Whittington and Whittington ends up on his back.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's a blanketing Devente Adams and jamming at the line of scrimmage.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's chasing down a play at the end where the ball comes out and the ball was out after the ramps player was down, but Upton's going to make you tell him it wasn't a fumble and he's diving in there and creating problems.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think he was already going to be this guy, but what a great thing for him to
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: And basically, like, get the license, like, yeah, go be that guy, and it's just, I think he's special.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I thought, you know, Jack Jones made some plays and down at Orlanor, I thought a good game.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously we're not a green made a big play.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: Mark, he's seen the really tackled well, but, you know, Renardo Green is just, if you just watch him on every play, you're going to be entertained.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, let's talk about Christian McCaffrey.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is a major test for Christian.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to benefit the team if it plays out like this.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: But it may cost Christian McCaffrey big money.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think he knows it.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's not his main motivation.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: No, his main motivation is to be the best player he can be.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I think to him that means proving he can be out there on every play.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_00]: 413 touches last year led the league.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think 47% somewhere in that range of the 40 monitors.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: Offensive touches belong to Christian McCaffrey last year.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: That percentage led the league.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: And clearly the plan is different.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that was clear from the jump.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think it would be more snaps than Christian on the first possession, basically.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Christian gets a snap, Kaling is three.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: Red zone?
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, okay, Christian's gonna come jog and out in the red zone.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: Nope, not every time, sometimes, not every time.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: Some of it was K-lon black.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now, in the end, the carries plus the catches added up to the same number, 15 of peace.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Which,
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's pretty rare that you can just dial it up and have it be exactly equal.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought, well, you know, as this game's going on, that'll be cool.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: K-Lon for the first half, and it's just to keep Christian fresh for the second half.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: But it's clear it's both of those guys together.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I just thought watching it that 15 play drive to start the game and Christians in there, then K-Lons in there, and then K-Lons in there, and then K-Lons in there, and then Christians in there, and then K-Lons in there.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching through Benaclos, Christians to stay out of the sideline.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought he must be steaming, not because he's a bad teammate, but because this is not anything, he's not done this before, he's not had to do this before.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't, and I think he probably feels like I don't need to be doing it now, like I'm good, and he is.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: But David identified, clearly, I think we saw it in camp that Kailon Black has some burst.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that is not enough to get you on the field.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: You gotta be able to catch the ball.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: And you have to be trusted the block.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: But Kailon has checked both those boxes.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: The evidence is in, they believe in him.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: Is it gonna work like this the whole year?
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see, it's only one week.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I still think Kailon Black has more to prove.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: You got to do a week after week after week.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: You got to protect the football when you get these carries, right?
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: The more carries you get, the more chances you get to fumble, the more times you're out there in past protection, the more chances you get to blow a blitz pick up and get your quarterback hit.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: Christian is great, not just because he's great on a given day, but because he's great over and over and over and over and over and that is greatness.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: We talk about it all the time with quarterbacks, all these guys at the NFL level can make a great throw here or there, can you consistently layer it over, can you consistently make, you know what I charted, practice throws several years ago, what was clear is that
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: Most of the throws that you make are the run of the mill throws that actually aren't run of the mill But in the NFL they count as just basic throws, but they're hard and most guys can't make them all the time back up quarterbacks can't make them all the time
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's why Brock Perti's Brock Perti because he makes a most of the time.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: The best guys make a most of the time.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then, two or three times a game do something extraordinary.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what they do week after week after week after week.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: So there is no question that Christian McCaffrey, we know what his body of work is.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: And he's going to be judged on the past, but oven the now.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: And so we'll came on black.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: But Kaylon Black hasn't proven that yet.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing with Kaylon Black, as explosive as he is, it still feels like Christian, I mean, of course he is.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's a much more experienced runner.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: Christian is so much more patient.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like Christian, Kaylon is like, you want to see my first step?
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: First, here I go.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: Boo!
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes it's through a hole and sometimes it's up somebody's back, and he's just doing it over and over and over again.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_00]: And that's cool.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it is kind of thunder and lightning.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: But Christian has been Christian, like by himself is thunder and lightning, and now you got another guy who's kind of lightning.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be a challenge, it's going to be a challenge, and you hope that we saw on the first possession of the second half is what the result of it is.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: Those two carries from a café, so Debo has the big return.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: and we'll get to Debo.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_00]: But Debo has the big return, and then Christian goes, bam, 14-yard carry, boom, 16-yard carry, and you could just see, like, Christian never looks different, but I just maybe I was projecting because I just felt the situation is like, he must be feeling something here.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: It just felt like he came out.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: just ready to prove something.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I'll Christian McAfrey with a chip on a shoulder or whatever you want to call it is a dangerous player.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: Look, Christian McAfrey getting less touches is still to me 300 touches.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: it's a lot.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think what will be interesting is like red zone situation.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's a demon in the red zone.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's not in there in all the red zone situations.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't this last game in there in all the red zone situations.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the plan is good.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think the chance to see K-Long black.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's earned it.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think he proved it.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_00]: I thought what was great about him.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't get the chance to see it was dribbling, but it was great about K-Long
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: in the preseason game, he looked away, looked in training camp.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I've said this, like, that's the test.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: Do you, as this, as this stage gets bigger, do you just look the same?
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: And the answer through training camp to practices with him, and preseason games with him, and struggling was, yes.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then we didn't get the chance to see it was dribbling, but not much.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: He played a drive in a half.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: and I'll get to that video in a second.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: But the chance to see it with Kaylon was like, yeah, he's got it.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: And if that means Christian's more fresh, Christian would say, I don't need it.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: Look at me last year, I was good.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, ultimately, that's a benefit to the team.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll see what that looks like every week.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's just something to watch every week.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: And how does McAfrey handle it?
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: How does Kaylon black handle it?
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: If the end of the day, it's still a lot of touches for Christian, but it's just not what it's used to.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just, it was there for all of us to see, right?
- 31:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's the plan.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very different.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very different.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Daychan's dribbling.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: The injury was there for everybody to see, but I think it actually happened earlier.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: The second drive of the game is when Daychan's dribbling initially injured his left ankle.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then the video that
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: is when it got exacerbated.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and the other reason, again, like sometimes the binoculars benefit, I saw them limping off after the play.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I went, I didn't see in that play what happened, but I went back and watched the video.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's actually kind of two plays where he gets hurt.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now rap sheets said on Sunday, uh, a deltoid spraying in his ankle, I'll let the doctors explain it.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_00]: Out at least a
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: sf will be cautious he writes so you know it's it sucks because he looks so good and it's it's amazing to think I don't know how they've spread it around if they had strebling
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: Ampere Saul and they said they were going to they might have got deeper anyway, even if Pyrr Saul was healthy that it wasn't a response and Evans But they don't have that they have half of that The play that it that I think it happened on and maybe Calshanna hand when the weak starts will give a further explanation because I'm sure he'll be asked about it but
- 32:58[SPEAKER_00]: was in on the second drive.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: There's actually a two-play sequence where it looks like and it's not exactly clear, but it looks like it happens.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: He gets knocked down down field.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: And for the, again, if you're listening to this on the podcast feed, there's the video and it everything's timestamped is in the YouTube.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: But he gets knocked down down field and then the very next play, he lines up on the other side.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: and is, you know, running around and comes up a little can be not as bad as it was later in the game.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: But at that point, he limps off the field.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: You can tell he's favoring the video doesn't show everything.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_00]: This is just the all 22 from the NFL pro website.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but then he limps off, and then he comes back, Kyle, like Jake Tajus, who, who, who had limped off on it, and then came back, and then really, you could see you got hurt.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, um, I think what happened was he came back and, and then obviously it got worse, uh, but I'm sure Kyle will give us some explanation on that, uh, but again, I just want to, I, I, I, I'd seen it live that he limped off way earlier than when he actually got helped off.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: and and I went back and found that video.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: So that's when it happened on the second series, the second offensive series of the game for the 49ers.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, let's talk about Mike Evans.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: On the first series of the game, what happened?
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers had a great drive and I thought it might have been devastating for them not to not to score a touch now.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: I marked it down in my head.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's just
- 34:29[SPEAKER_00]: You lose this game.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's comes back to really haunt you because you had the opening script.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Guys are flying in and out.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob Cowings getting snaps like everything's working.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans has three first-down catches on that drive and you go third and goal and I'm I'm watching and there goes Mike jogging off the field on third now and I'm like why is Mike Evans going off the field on third now and then that play you'll remember
- 35:00[SPEAKER_00]: was that front, right, pie long throw to Mark's Robinson, incomplete, knocked away.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought, I just kind of filed away, like, that's got to be the last time on third and goal at like the three that Mike Evans ever comes off the field.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I'd say after one week.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I know we, you kind of, you had a couple things doing the pre-season, which he said, if it was the regular season I would have played.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: But after one week and I was when he was on the field like I was a pro brand IU guy to me.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: He was never a one A but you had multiple kind of one B's and he was that
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: But that's a trade you would make.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: After watching one week of Mike Evans, that's essentially the trade, right?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: If Brandon and I, you could hear, Mike Evans is not.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: Brandon and I, you could not hear.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_00]: The Marcus Robinson gets number 11.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans is, and he's a game changer.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: And there were some hints during OTAs, both Raheem and Clay Kubiak said, you know, well, use Mike the way he's used to being used, and we'll use some ways that maybe he's not being used to being used.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: And some of you may remember that Ted Winn was great on the film from the athletic came on the show.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: He said, I expected to look a little bit like Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about what that meant.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about Mike Evans and the slot more.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Mike Evans was in the slot more.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: And between all the movement and Kyle use check and run in the same 49 miles basically that I walked in Melbourne and Debo motioning all over the place and Christian motioning all over the place.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: They had those guys in a blender.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then the problem with Mike Evans is even when you have him covered.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Watson is a long corner.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_00]: And he was on Mike Evans a lot.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: Not like Mike Evans had some mismatch on, he had Jalen Watson a lot, not every time, but a lot.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_00]: And on that touchdown, Perty puts it right on top of the button on Jalen Watson's helmet.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: And it's really good coverage.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of got to catch that ball, basically the traffic being the defender's helmet and hands and arms, and Mike Evans made it look easy.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: And you just, I just want, oh my God.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm already ready.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: There's gonna be games where it's like three touchdowns on three covered ends on jump balls and it's just gonna be, you know, welcome to Big Mike's barbecue.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's talk about Debo, another guy who it was clear right away.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you like you go to all these training camp practices and sometimes you have questions and sometimes you have answers.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: And with Debo right away, it was clear and everybody said it,
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: This guy looks really good.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: You could just tell, we've all seen it enough now going into these practices.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: You could just tell when it's going to translate and with Debo, it translated, and I can't believe it was ever gone.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I can't believe he took so long to come back like in hindsight, he should have been back sooner in hindsight, if they believed that Debo would look the way Debo looks, then I do believe John Lynch when he says, it wasn't just because Ricky Pierce all got hurt that we signed Debo.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_00]: We were talking about signing Debo anyway.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: He is so hard to tackle.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: He is an absolute terror to tackle.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: He fits so well with Kyle.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_00]: I, and remember I said this.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: After they signed Debo, I said, everyone's just assuming the wide back is done.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: And my answer was, have you met Kyle Shanahan?
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: Debo is here because you can do all these different things.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: And the beauty now with Kaylon Black and McAfrey's healthy, remember Debo's last year, her Christian was not healthy, is that he doesn't need to do it, and even Jews like, Jews did so much, like watching it live, you could just see, use check was blocking so well.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: David doesn't debug and sprinkle it, sprinkle a little this, sprinkle a little wide back, sprinkle a little bubble screen, sprinkle a little dbo in the flat, sprinkle a little dbo over the middle, dbo is the kick returner.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: That was a huge boost, like he just has this constant energy.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: And if you saw while we were in Australia, I posted a back-to-back days, some practice video from practice.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought it was really important that these guys spent a week together.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be a long-term benefit to them as a team with some new guys, like Mike Evans, Demos return, that they spent a week together.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you just as pros don't really get to have road trips like that anymore.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: And college used to maybe have some more kind of team building.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: We don't really talk about team building or spirit.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: right at the pro level, but these guys got to be just them in a bubble together for a week and watching Debo at practice and he's messing around with Lenore and he's messing around with Fred Warner and Drake Greenlaw and he's high-fiving guys and he's talking to guys and he's he is just array of sunshine as a teammate.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: In addition to being a burst of flames as an opponent and he is just like
- 40:06[SPEAKER_00]: You how hard he plays and how healthy he stays playing like that and when he's not 100% he still looks he still plays a certain way.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you can just see, it's just so obvious when you go, well, why would a coach love deep?
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: Why would Kyle Shanahan love Deepo Samo?
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: Why would John Lynch love Deepo Samo?
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: Why would a teammate love Deepo Samo?
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he is a force of nature.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he is.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: He's a force of nature.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I expect him to look good.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't, so I've got some I told you so, but here's the, I didn't tell you so.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't expect him to look just vintage, Deepo.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: But he looks like vintage, Deepo.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: And it's, um, it's really impressive.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember, you know, I was thinking about it, like, what is the analogy?
- 40:54[SPEAKER_00]: Because Kyle has always, you know, I think one of his strengths, I think great coaches can all distill for their players, for their coaches, for themselves.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: And one of Kyle's strengths is he's got all these weapons he knows how to get it around.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think sometimes it can be too much for offensive coaches.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like how do you weave all of these instruments together?
- 41:20[SPEAKER_00]: And it made me think of going to see Bruce Springsteen at Chase Center.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I was not a spring-steen guy.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not anti-springsteen.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: I just like, I don't know all the songs.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_00]: I know enough to know if someone's like, hey, you want to go to spring-steen.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, yeah, but I wasn't buying ticket.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't going out of my way for it.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then we went, and he does this song, my favorite spring stings song now, I didn't have a, I mean, I knew, you know, like the basic hits, but my favorite Bruce Spring stings song is a song called City of Roens.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: And the song itself is like, I don't know, five, six, seven minutes, and it's really good.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: But the live version is like 18 minutes, depending on the one we saw was almost 20 minutes.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: And if you go listen to the other live version of that song, they're all like 15, 16, 17, 18, 20 minutes.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: And what's cool about that song is that he introduces every member of the E Street band during that song.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: He does the same thing during every live, I think.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, springsteen people go to like all the concerts so they could know better.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: But each person gets basically a solo.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: And just shout out to each person and like the crowd goes crazy because they know them all and then that person does a little thing and it is really cool.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's I counted it's like I think it's 16 people in the band including him and like the singers and they get them and when you think about it.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know that to me is kind of the cop it's like anybody can just bring a bunch like oh we get 17 people in a band.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: But can you find a way for each of them to get their solo?
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: Can you get Debo his can you get Evans his can you get Kittle his can you get juice his and the answers like juices comes in different ways that's block a hill you know he's going to he's going to leak He's going to be wide open and brushing after he had a can you get Christian his can you get came on black his can you get dribbling his I have no doubt he would have got his You know Jake Todd just going to get his
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: He gets hurt.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: So now Luke Feral gets his second and ten at the half yard line after a penalty from the end zone and Luke Feral, that was a huge play in the game to Marcus Robinson.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to get his yes, his touchdown was incredible.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: So it's Kyle is, it's one of the many things I've said this many times.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think he is almost underrated as a head coach because he's so highly rated as a play caller.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: That I think, it's almost like, well, he's a great play caller and a good head coach.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's the case.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a great head coach because he values defense.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think he has evolved from a game management standpoint.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't want to be predictable from a game management standpoint.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: Any offensive play caller that elevates all these guys, it's not normal to be able to elevate all these guys.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's developing a quarterback now, really for the first time as a head coach, Jimmy clearly played his best football with Kyle, but now Brock is from beginning to the middle now and we are in the middle with Brock, right?
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: This is Brock Perti.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: We are witnessing a quarterback peak.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we're seeing.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to turn 27 on the day.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: They play the Kansas City Chiefs after Christmas.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it's, you know, the same thing I said about Debo, let's say it about the starting quarterback.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's not normal when you get 45 minutes and without talking about the quarterback.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: But everything he does, it looked like an training camp and it looked like it in the game, is so tight.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: And in this instance, I mean, tight as in just dialed, his drops are tight.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a football guy, but,
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: God, I know clean when I see clean and that is clean.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like he is so clean right now.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: And not everything's perfect.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: He almost got Christian cut in half.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: But let go.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Go look at staffers.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's the raining MVP and he was all over the place.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's just, you can't not every, it's hard.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: But more often than not, the ball is exactly where it's supposed to be.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: The decisions were great.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: This is just one week of football.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_00]: But to me, and there will be bad games, and there will be picks, and there was a pick in this game.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to happen.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: But he looked like what I said before the game was, I think he's going to have the best year of his career because he should.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: How could he not?
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's at the age now where your physical gifts are at their peaks, or at their peaking as a physically, right?
- 45:50[SPEAKER_00]: Athletically, you're peaking at 32.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's not gonna, but right now, at 26, 27, you're peaking.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_00]: And you've been around long enough to really have it, kind of slow down.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: And your coach knows you, and now your coach has another year to develop stuff exactly for you.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: And you've been with these other guys, I thought it was gonna take him my Kevin's a little more time.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: That's how it looked and practiced to be honest, Kyle basically said it, and then, ffff, ffff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff, fff,
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's the way it happens with the killies as it's like it keeps getting better.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_00]: You come back and I thought George will create blocking, but it's still going to keep getting better.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think from kind of just an explosiveness, pass-catching standpoint, the deep ball to Robinson was on point.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: He had time to load up and he delivered.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's never been any question by the way.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I saw someone tweet the video.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he wasn't supposed to have this arm strength.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to protect him like they protected him pretty well,
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: Um, when he has time to step into it, you make it a throw, then there were times where he didn't have time to step into it, and I thought he still makes him really quick.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think the best guys who are really processing can, um, they make these last second throws that get him out of trouble, like sometimes you're going to escape with your legs.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you have to emergency escape with your arm and the question is, is it a throw way?
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: or is the completion.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: He had one kind of, he was about to get sat, kind of jump throw out to K-Lon Black in the left flat, and that play looked like it was going to be a sack, and that looked like it was going to be an in-completion.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_00]: And instead it was like five yards.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_00]: The calmness, the way he decides to run, the way he started the game, just out the gate, him and Kyle, I think.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think they of their first 14 or 18 plays, 12 of them were past.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're like 12 passes for runs like that.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like they came out firing.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_00]: And what we saw was Kyle Shanahan having total confidence, being on the same page.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_00]: Just like Brock Perry has never been more of an extension of Kyle Shanahan than now.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_00]: And what we've always said, what I've always said about Kyle is he's from a play calling example.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's great.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: But at the end of the day, he doesn't get to stand on the field.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like, to be able to be his quarterback, you've got a process with him, right?
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then there are going to be time for you have to find answers that aren't there.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, Brock does that.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: Brock adlibs,
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things, one of the big things in the offseason was Brock Stang in the pocket.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_00]: His time to throw last year was like second longest in the league, only Caleb, a month qualified quarterbacks, took longer to throw.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: And if you watch Brock every snap, you know that it's not always just Brock standing around extending plays.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: There were some plays where he gets it out quick and some plays where he extends it a long time.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: And the average of those things was longer than you want it to be.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_00]: So they wanted him to hang in there and he mostly did it.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: But it felt like every time he left the pocket was at the right time.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I questioned it.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_00]: I thought when he left the pocket to throw that touchdown to Debo, he was leaving a clean pocket.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was a good pocket.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_00]: He was getting a little pressure from the left, but as it was the play was unfolding, like, bro, bro, why is he rolling right?
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't need to go anywhere.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_00]: The pocket's fine.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_00]: He was rolling right to open it up for Debo and he did.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: And it did like to me like that was next level chess.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: from Brock, from Brock, and it confirmed just one game, but it confirmed what I expected.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I can't say at a one side, this game confirmed a lot about the 49ers, and then out of the other side say, well, you could never trust what happens in week one.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm not going to say that, but here's what I will say, now watching all of week one, except for the Sunday night and Monday night games.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_00]: I learned something years ago doing college, and I think the same thing applies to the NFL.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you get so in the weeds on a team.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: And I said this last week, so this is not a reaction.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: Because I said this team can definitely compete for a championship.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: To me, there's no doubt they can compete for a suitable, and that's how I felt before the game.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason is, you have to step back and look around the league, and in college, the lessons always this.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody hates their quarterback in college.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: The quarterback plays obviously not as good as it is in the NFL, and in any given year, like, by the end of the year, like five to seven fan bases, maybe, like their quarterback.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: And you think like, are going in every year, it's like, I don't guys like nothing, good.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: And all these other teams, you just pay attention to your team.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_00]: And these are watching other teams, you're like, oh,
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is just kind of what college quarterbacks mostly look like.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I think with the Niners, like you get in the past rush and the interior deline, legit concern, the safeties, I don't know, legit long way to go, long season to play, a lot of games to play, backhand, a lot of road games.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: But I just felt like, look at the dudes on their team.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: I was texting with Nick Falls the other day and maybe we'll get him on the pod, because I'm good buddies with his brother-in-law, but it turns out his co-host on his podcast, the season.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: And he was coming out Australia saw his text and he's like, what do you think of the Niner?
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, well, look at the teams.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, look at the players.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_00]: Look at these guys.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: All the guys have already listed.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: All the guys you know, both say in Warner and a Digi Zua and Lenore and his stout and drag green laws back.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: And Trent, why do you mention Trent?
- 51:47[SPEAKER_00]: Miles Garrett gets surgery.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: Trent was unbelievable.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: and kiddo it on and on and on, right?
- 51:55[SPEAKER_00]: You tell me that team isn't going to, with Brock now, who's about to have a career here, I think, and Kyle Shanahan and Reed Morris, a good DC, you know what I think that team has a chance?
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: Please, of course they have a chance.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then what happens?
- 52:07[SPEAKER_00]: You watch week one on Sunday and you're like, oh yeah, again, I'm not drawing any vast conclusions over week one, that's always dangerous to do the lessons have been learned.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: But like, okay, you're telling me these teams,
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: There's plenty of good teams, but I know the bear scored 59 today, but like, yeah, they're in the mix, okay, they're in the championship mix, of course they are, and that's not a reaction to week one, it's just a recognition of like, they're pretty damn good.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: October 4th home game against Denver they'll go to Seattle and that will start a stretch of five games at home and eight games on the road if you can't the Vikings games are a game which it is in Mexico City.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: On Thursday, this past Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that there is a greater than 90% chance
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: of a strong El Niño being present in October, November and December, a 75% probability on the West Coast, a 75% probability that it will rank as the strongest in history since modern records began in 1950.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you might have said, well, yeah, I heard about the El Nino last month.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Well, last month they said it was less than a 70% chance.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: It'd be the strongest in history since modern records began in 1950.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_00]: And others say it's a 75% chance.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_00]: So it's getting stronger.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: So it's actually may not be the worst time to be away from home.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now, initially, you know, these El Nino's usually are Southern California.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's looking like there's going to be
- 54:00[SPEAKER_00]: We know that honors are scheduled to go to Dallas and then Mexico City, you know, scheduled in a likelihood to practice that we can call it a springs.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's not a bad thing.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know when this rain exactly is going to be at this point, but they're probably will be a story like, how are they?
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to be able to practice.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_00]: If we're gonna get two weeks of bomb cyclones like we did a couple of years ago, are we gonna, are they gonna practice?
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: Where, how?
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, it may not be the worst thing in the world actually.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see, tourially to say for sure, but there's a chance that playing all these road games ends up being a little bit of a blessing in disguise if we're getting pounded with rain out here on the West Coast.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I'm sure, now I'll revisit this podcast and go,
- 54:46[SPEAKER_00]: But, that's where we're going to stop for now.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm missing my flat whites and long blacks, which is the espresso drinks in Melbourne, which I was having three times a day.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_00]: And now the next week begins.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: So here we go.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: Have a great one.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk to you else later.
