Transcript
- 0:00Bonus time every year at the USTFCCCA convention down in
- 0:05December, we do a live podcast event where we sit down with
- 0:08coaches from around the country for 5:00-ish minutes and talk
- 0:11about a certain topic. This year, December of 2024, we
- 0:15sat down with coaches to talk about the NCAA.
- 0:18What's going on with the NIL transfer portal?
- 0:20Roster caps all. Those kind of good things, and
- 0:22there's some interesting. Feedback and tidbits.
- 0:25From everyone who chose to sat down with us.
- 0:27So here we are, the audio version of that You can catch
- 0:29the video version over on. YouTube.
- 0:31Just search up the Gale Athletics podcast and look for
- 0:34our live events content and you'll find the three that we've
- 0:37done 20/24/2023 2020 2 and we'll do it again in 2025.
- 0:42Alright my friend, how are you doing?
- 0:45Well, doing well. Start by introducing yourself
- 0:47please. And I don't know if you heard
- 0:48the rule. We need the mic pretty close so
- 0:49everybody can hear that beautiful voice.
- 0:51All right, I'm Tyree Price, assistant track and field coach
- 0:53at TCU with the horizontal jumps.
- 0:55The horizontal jumps, man, you you're so I love you.
- 0:58By the way, you do such a good job.
- 1:00You know, USC and Bethune Cookman or SC State?
- 1:04I I always get a mixed up. Yeah, both.
- 1:06OK, See, I took a risk there to guess there, but always have
- 1:12done a good job. Everywhere you go.
- 1:13There's not just necessarily good athletes are attracted to
- 1:16being coached by you. You make really good athletes.
- 1:20You coach your butt off, my friend, and it's really cool to
- 1:22see. I gave it to the athletes and
- 1:23they make help make me. Yeah, You know, I, I, I'm glad I
- 1:26get to do this live because one of my things that I absolutely
- 1:29can't stand when coaches say this and Ken Harden is the worst
- 1:31at this, is I'm just the bus driver.
- 1:34Because here's the thing. If that's true, then I don't
- 1:36need you. We don't need you, but we do
- 1:38need you. You and Ken and other guys and
- 1:41gals. Your coaching matters.
- 1:43Yeah. OK.
- 1:43All right. All right.
- 1:44I get it. I know you're, you know, you of
- 1:46all people, Tyree, you're so humble.
- 1:48If you you're you, you ooze humility.
- 1:51I get that. But don't forget the positive
- 1:53impact you make on young people, which isn't always, by the way,
- 1:55what their penultimate stuff is. It's how you treat and talk with
- 1:58them and lift them up because you know, 99% of them are not
- 2:01going to go pro in track and field, but 100% of them are
- 2:04going to go and become business owners, doctors, teachers,
- 2:06coaches, moms, dads, etcetera. And that's that's your real
- 2:09positive impact that you make. OK, I'm stepping off my soapbox,
- 2:14but we'll get you on your soapbox.
- 2:16So, you know, the theme of the year that we've been talking
- 2:18about, what's your thoughts, feelings, actions on just all
- 2:21this, call it craziness, if you will, this change in the NCAA
- 2:24Well. I think I looked at it from last
- 2:26year's standpoint that I felt it was a, it was a good thing
- 2:30that's coming along. You know, the negative is
- 2:32probably less opportunities for some institutions, but then it's
- 2:37more so for those who people who opt in, it's less opportunities
- 2:40for those schools. But then I always said, you
- 2:43know, because I've come from a mid, mid, mid division.
- 2:47Level Major. And so and then HBCU as well,
- 2:51you have opportunities to get some of the athletes that you
- 2:54didn't have the opportunity to get before.
- 2:57So now it opens up the the level of playing field for those
- 3:00student athletes do. You, you brought up something
- 3:02that I hadn't thought about. You know, I have a lot of
- 3:06respect and love for HBC us, mainly because the coaches that
- 3:10I've met at HBC US are just salt to the earth people.
- 3:14Like I love, you know, we had Richie being here earlier.
- 3:17I mean, just really amazing people.
- 3:20I haven't thought specifically about them.
- 3:22Is, is there any extra negative towards them because of, I'll
- 3:27call it unique situations, you know, being an HBCU, etcetera,
- 3:29or are they lumped into the same of the Division One or you know,
- 3:32division two depending on what division they're in?
- 3:34No, I. I, I really don't think there's
- 3:36any downside because you know, even from, if they opt in and
- 3:40with the 45, it kind of helps them as well.
- 3:42Because now when you're looking at numbers and when Advent the
- 3:46rights are looking at numbers and they're going to boosters
- 3:48and it's like that the, when the numbers fluctuate, then you have
- 3:53no stable body from how many numbers are you're dealing with
- 3:55student athletes. So now from all levels that you
- 3:58say, OK, this is the maximum amount of student athletes
- 4:02you're ever going to have in a given.
- 4:03Year she's here just to take your picture.
- 4:05You know that not not me. Love you guys.
- 4:09Thank you. So when you look at it from that
- 4:13standpoint, now they can say, OK, we're never going to have
- 4:16this many more athletes as a as a body of athletics.
- 4:21And so it's easier to go to the to the constituents and say, OK,
- 4:25this is how much money we're going to need to able to fund
- 4:28this this pro the athletic. Department because we're.
- 4:30Never going to, but when you had before, you can have 100 people
- 4:34on your team, you can have 50 people.
- 4:36And so it can always fluctuate from that standpoint.
- 4:39So it's pretty significantly. The money and keeping it stable
- 4:41like well, this year you ask for this amount of money next that
- 4:45year you ask for. This money, you never ask for
- 4:46less, by the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah, You got you
- 4:48got half the roster, but you ask for more.
- 4:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. So if you know my my boss is
- 4:51over there, I do the I do the same thing in my budget every
- 4:54every year. Every year.
- 4:56I'm glad he's not listening. Sorry.
- 4:57Go ahead. So when you know that this is
- 4:59the maximum amount of people, yeah, you can say, OK.
- 5:01That's a great point. Where?
- 5:02Our high size going to be we're going to go lower, but yeah,
- 5:05this is where high. Size is the match.
- 5:06It gives some stability to because I think you know right
- 5:09now today you you've got to do a lot of things with roster
- 5:12management. Boy, with this 45 and 17 like
- 5:15you are AGM, you are now today, but you are really AGM on roster
- 5:19management. How you do your red shirts when
- 5:22someone gets injured, who you going to carry indoor versus
- 5:25outdoor versus cross? But you do know the maximum
- 5:28though, right? Which is different today?
- 5:30Now the other thing is it forces coaches to really forecast their
- 5:35recruiting out and and really understand those things.
- 5:38But so those, those coaches are not forecasting out.
- 5:41You're just looking for today. You're going to be caught up.
- 5:44Yeah, come in, in two years or three years.
- 5:46So, so how would your best guess, you know, recruiting.
- 5:49So let's say it's 45. So if things are equal and
- 5:52they're typically not ever equal, right, that means
- 5:5511:50-ish per class, not counting a full rich, that
- 5:59that's four years only, right? Not counting 5.
- 6:01And if we, if you're going to be a full team, that means 10
- 6:05people spread out of your distance, your throws, your
- 6:07jumps, your sprints, maybe multi, et cetera.
- 6:11Are you recruiting like you doing jumps?
- 6:14Are you like, down to like just recruiting two kids a year?
- 6:17No, well, it's, it's comes down to I think what each director or
- 6:22or head coach wants to do. And so it just comes out you got
- 6:25to get the best athletes that's going to help your program to be
- 6:28the best that they. Can be.
- 6:29So you may be 0, it could be 0. The Sprint coach may say, hey, I
- 6:32got 510 flat kids right now, boss, right?
- 6:36Yeah. And, and, and that's what you
- 6:37want to look at is what's going to better your program for a
- 6:40conference and what's going to better qualms for nationals.
- 6:42So do you this just kind of, I got a little bit of goosebumps
- 6:45actually. So let's, let's say it's evenly
- 6:47and you recruit two kids a year. Let's just, and, and I realize
- 6:50what you're saying. I respect that.
- 6:51Does that mean, and I hope the answer is yes.
- 6:54And I know we're all conjecture here, but does that mean you
- 6:57might have a better I, I hate this term, but you'll, you'll
- 7:00understand exactly what I'm saying.
- 7:01Work life balance, because right now you could be recruiting.
- 7:04I, I, I imagine you start at 4:00, 50 and it whittles down to
- 7:07the 456 whatever you sign. Is this mean like, oh, I only
- 7:10have to go after 5 or 6 to get my 2?
- 7:13I can actually be a human being and not a track coach 24/7
- 7:16because that's not healthy. Yes and no.
- 7:19And I'm gonna say, and I say that because.
- 7:22Notice all the good coaches always say maybe and yes or no.
- 7:25I. Like that because you're not
- 7:26sure if you're going to get just those two people.
- 7:29So because everybody else is probably after those same two
- 7:32people, you still have to recruit.
- 7:34A. You hope so.
- 7:34Or you there might be the two wrong people.
- 7:37So you're hoping that you're getting you got to have a stable
- 7:40of people. So just in case the two that
- 7:42you're top are going after, you can't get them that OK with
- 7:45these the next two people. So you've got to keep a
- 7:48connection with X amount of people and, and figure out how
- 7:52to do that correctly, meaning not leading people on.
- 7:54And hey, I've, I've signed my 2 that I'm allowed Mr. Mrs. third
- 7:58person. Hey, call my buddy coach So and
- 8:01so at this school or you know, or, or again, if they're you're
- 8:04recruiting the right people. They have, they've got their own
- 8:05backgrounds. Yeah.
- 8:06And so and then and in that case, like you just said, is
- 8:10being able to take that person over.
- 8:11And it's like, you know, listen, you know, we, we've reached the
- 8:13limit of what we can do. I can help you get to the best
- 8:16situation for. You right?
- 8:18Yeah, that that's what's called longevity, by the way, and means
- 8:20you can recruit 2 more people in that 20 years from now, you'll
- 8:23still be a respected person. I love it.
- 8:25All right, Tyree. So we're gonna publish this
- 8:27again next December as we're leading into the 2025
- 8:29convention. So we'll be able to check to see
- 8:31this answer. Give us a prediction for
- 8:33something that's going to happen in track and field.
- 8:35It could be TCU school record. You know, you're going to set
- 8:38the long jump school, which that's a heck of a school
- 8:40record, by the way. It could be, you know, someone
- 8:43earlier said, no, Lyles is going to bounce back and win the 100
- 8:46and 200. So it could be as high as low,
- 8:48anywhere in between. Just what's, what do you think?
- 8:49Something that's exciting, maybe that's going to happen here in
- 8:522025. Rob Benjamin is going to
- 8:54dominate again. Oh, bro, come on, I said.
- 8:56You got to give some hardness to this.
- 8:57Come on. I had a conversation with Joanna
- 9:00Hayes at Prefontaine 2 years ago.
- 9:05It was talking about rye. And you know, they're at that
- 9:07point the, the, I hate to say to me, people were like, oh, he's
- 9:12underperforming, you know, the, the war home is beating, blah
- 9:15blah, blah. And she's like, they have no
- 9:16idea what's going on, you know, the plan and things like that.
- 9:19And I was like, hey, here's the cool thing.
- 9:21And I know that doesn't care about other people think in
- 9:24regards this. I go, who cares what they think?
- 9:26Just show up and do it. And she's like, that's exactly
- 9:28what we're going to do. And so for them to have the I
- 9:30was so excited, like so pumped as she goes into a head coaching
- 9:34position herself. Like, I was really happy for Rye
- 9:36and and for her, you know, my. Mama being at USC for a.
- 9:40Long time. Here, watching Rye really train.
- 9:42It was. Setting up, it's just.
- 9:44Small, yeah, that's true. You had insider view to this?
- 9:46Yeah, so. The injuries that they happen
- 9:48in, they kind of threw derailed him that year.
- 9:50Yeah, yeah. You saw it built up.
- 9:52It built up and, and I'm not sure, and it's hard to say this
- 9:57because of what he ran and all this because I'm not sure he's
- 9:59at the cut. I think there's more in the
- 10:00tank, but there's a lot more in the tank, yeah.
- 10:02And he's more fired up now than than you thought.
- 10:05But before. I love that.
- 10:07I was at, I think it was Prefontaine somewhere.
- 10:09I had to be in line for one of these that these type of meet
- 10:12that Rye was running in and he was behind me in line.
- 10:14And so I took AI snuck a picture over my and I and I tweeted and
- 10:17said, hey, does anybody recognize this guy?
- 10:18He looks kind of fast. And I tagged him.
- 10:20Yeah, it was kind of funny. I was like, that's the closest
- 10:22Rye Benjamin's ever going to know who the world I I am.
- 10:24Tyree. Thank you so much, man.
- 10:26I'm really grateful for you to sit down here.
- 10:28You know, I'm a big fan of yours from a long time ago.
- 10:31And it's just so awesome to see the success because you deserve
- 10:34every bit of it. And the athletes that you get to
- 10:35coach are very deserving of you as well, man.
- 10:37So very, very grateful. Seeing you in always
- 10:41conversation with you, you're a great person.
- 10:43Man, you need to pick it back up though.
- 10:44I think I've said this to you every year.
- 10:47You know exactly what I'm talking about the.
- 10:49Show's coming back. Out good what's going on thing
- 10:51you have got we're. We're recording starting next
- 10:55week, we're going to start. Recording, you've got to go
- 10:57check it out. Go on is probably the easiest
- 10:58place to social media. Maybe YouTube.
- 11:00Probably, maybe YouTube. Go to YouTube.
- 11:02If I search your name, will it pop up?
- 11:03What's the name you call it? The goal?
- 11:05The making of champions. Making of champions.
- 11:06He has had really amazing people on his show, and that's coming
- 11:12from a guy who thinks I have amazing people.
- 11:14I, I do I don't, I know, I don't think I know.
- 11:16And it's really enjoyable to see a different style and a
- 11:20different, you know, you come at it from a different angle
- 11:22because of where what you're doing today as coaching.
- 11:23So you know me, I don't think of those things as competition.
- 11:27I think of it as greatness for our sport.
- 11:28So you know, I'm always going to be like more, more, more while
- 11:32you're doing your job and having a life.
- 11:33I get it, I get it, but what you're doing is important and
- 11:36I'm grateful that you're contributing to great coaches in
- 11:39that way. Thank you very much.
- 11:40Thank. You brother, appreciate you very
- 11:41much. Oh, we got a prediction by by
- 11:50the way, yes, Tyree works with Marissa Chu there at TCU.
- 11:55Of course the coaches collab love her and the Athletics LLC
- 11:59and what they're doing there. We got a prediction here.
- 12:00Jasmine Jones will run sub 52 and the foreigner hurdles.
- 12:04Jamisa Ford will run. You got a lot of predictions
- 12:07here sub 41 and Caleb Brown will run sub 49.
- 12:10It might even break the NCAA 400 meter record.
- 12:12Now that is a that's a bold, bold prediction we're going to
- 12:17do we're going to do one more after him.
- 12:19Do you want to be it? And then we've done.
