- 0:01Speaker 1: You are now listening to the Someone's Favorite Productions podcast network.
- 1:15Speaker 2: When The Beyond came out on four K hmm, I
- 1:20Speaker 2: was very excited to get it, and I threw it
- 1:21Speaker 2: on one night and I think you were getting ready
- 1:25Speaker 2: for bed, and it was the very beginning of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: movie the uh you know, like the colonial attack scene
- 1:32Speaker 2: and she's getting ready for This.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Is how well I can remember movies I saw. I'm
- 1:37Speaker 3: telling you, I was a child. Shouldn't have been watching it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I know my dad and brother were in the room.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I recognized this movie being in the bathroom, just hearing
- 1:49Speaker 3: certain things.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's the whip, the when when they're whipping him with
- 1:53Speaker 2: the chain and ripping the skin.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Off and she comes down snarly.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Dude, she has been telling me about the scene that's
- 2:02Speaker 2: been in her head and she cannot figure out the
- 2:04Speaker 2: name of it forever, and it scared me. It turns out
- 2:07Speaker 2: it was The Beyond.
- 2:08Speaker 4: That Where did you? Where did you see that?
- 2:11Speaker 3: My well, I'm telling you my three I have three
- 2:14Speaker 3: older brothers, and the two oldest are very All three
- 2:19Speaker 3: of them are into movies, but the two oldest ones
- 2:21Speaker 3: are really into horror. Okay, I'm ninety nine, percent sure.
- 2:26Speaker 3: It was my oldest brother, the one who let me
- 2:27Speaker 3: watch popcorn, and I remember my dad being in the room,
- 2:30Speaker 3: and I just remember being so grossed out because I
- 2:37Speaker 3: remember the whip hitting and the skin coming off, and
- 2:41Speaker 3: then them throwing like I described it to him as
- 2:45Speaker 3: I remember a guy getting whipped in a basement. I
- 2:49Speaker 3: remember it was not black and white, but it was
- 2:52Speaker 3: like like a yellow owned color like in the film.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I said, there was. They also threw what looked like
- 3:01Speaker 3: I said Sand. I said, they threw something on him
- 3:06Speaker 3: and it started melting him. Well, turns out, seeing that again,
- 3:11Speaker 3: the reason why I got sand was because of his
- 3:15Speaker 3: appearance after the fact when he melts so like they
- 3:18Speaker 3: threw that on him. And then he kept watching and
- 3:22Speaker 3: the scene in the library with the spiders happened, and
- 3:24Speaker 3: I said, I.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Remember this fucking scene too. I'm like, I remember this.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I'm like I.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I was so happy because I had been telling him
- 3:33Speaker 3: since we met, there is a movie.
- 3:36Speaker 5: I don't know what it is.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I remember this distinct like scene, and I I have
- 3:42Speaker 3: never known what it was.
- 3:44Speaker 5: I had described it to you and you didn't put
- 3:46Speaker 5: the other put it together.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And then he put it on and I'm telling you,
- 3:50Speaker 3: as soon as I heard that noise and like the
- 3:53Speaker 3: music and the screaming, I came out and I said,
- 3:56Speaker 3: this is it?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Like middle of brushing her teeth, walked down. I was
- 3:59Speaker 2: just standing like at the exit of our hallway where
- 4:02Speaker 2: you can see the TV. And she's like, this is
- 4:04Speaker 2: it I found.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's like Nightmare of fuel as is,
- 4:08Speaker 4: and now you get to experience it in four k.
- 4:12Speaker 5: It's just crazy. That was.
- 4:15Speaker 3: That was very satisfying though for me, because when I
- 4:18Speaker 3: was I mean, I told my dad after we figured
- 4:22Speaker 3: it out, I said, Dad, this is what the scene was.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure you were there, and I'm pretty sure
- 4:29Speaker 3: I shouldn't have been in the room watching this.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I was small enough, That's what I asked. I was
- 4:34Speaker 2: like years ago, like who, Like, I didn't find the
- 4:38Speaker 2: Beyond at an age where I couldn't remember it. I
- 4:40Speaker 2: found the Beyond like way, Well, it's true.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Yeah, my oldest brother is forty two.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Okay, I'm thirty one, so my oldest brother, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 3: I'm I'm ninety nine percent sure it was him and
- 4:54Speaker 3: my dad. My parents have always been into horror, you know,
- 4:59Speaker 3: It's not so much my dad, my mom, and they
- 5:03Speaker 3: were just a huge movie family. My aunts and my
- 5:05Speaker 3: uncle is like all of us love movies so much.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And yeah, so my dad was saying like, yeah, where
- 5:13Speaker 3: where was I'm like, well, clearly in the room, like
- 5:16Speaker 3: you were in the room, and just I guess only
- 5:19Speaker 3: after that scene made me leave. But it's like, well,
- 5:23Speaker 3: how did I see the library? So I clearly had
- 5:27Speaker 3: those two scenes must have stood out in what I
- 5:29Speaker 3: was when I was there watching it. Those were the
- 5:32Speaker 3: two that stuck with me.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But arguably those are the two nastiest scenes of the
- 5:36Speaker 2: movie anyway. I mean, yeah, the only scene that bothers
- 5:39Speaker 2: me more than those is the dog attack, just because
- 5:42Speaker 2: I like animal attack stuff. It just it gets to
- 5:44Speaker 2: me in a different way.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I don't know, because I think for most of us
- 5:48Speaker 4: it's like, well, I mean you see it in movies,
- 5:51Speaker 4: and it's usually very unexpected. Yeah, it's just very visceral.
- 5:56Speaker 4: It's uncomfortable. I mean, you know, especially with like dogs,
- 6:00Speaker 4: you know, you're you're supposed to feel safe with them.
- 6:02Speaker 4: So when you kind of see everything kind of you know,
- 6:04Speaker 4: flipped upside down.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Well, she she saw nothing to be.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And it's usually it's usually fast like those, they're very
- 6:13Speaker 3: fast and they're usually pretty aggressive.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So she's also blind.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Yeah, but that's even scarier.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I see what you did. I see what you did there.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I mean that's yeah, that is scarier.
- 6:25Speaker 5: That is terrifying.
- 6:26Speaker 3: She had no idea, but I yeah, that all of
- 6:30Speaker 3: that came rushing back when you watched it. And I
- 6:33Speaker 3: kept coming out intermittently just seeing different scenes, and I
- 6:37Speaker 3: was like, I watched this. I think I watched it
- 6:40Speaker 3: in its entirety, because even the dog scene looked familiar.
- 6:43Speaker 2: To I think. Now tonight, you have to sit down
- 6:45Speaker 2: and watch it.
- 6:48Speaker 4: No, no, no, we insist.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I'm telling you that that part in the beginning, however,
- 6:55Speaker 3: they did that with the special effects, the whip with
- 6:58Speaker 3: the skin coming off like that, like it. It just
- 7:01Speaker 3: looks so incredibly painful. And I'm not squeamish at all.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I can watch a lot of different kinds of movies,
- 7:07Speaker 3: but that was something else, and I guess being somewhat
- 7:12Speaker 3: scarred enough that it was ingrained.
- 7:14Speaker 5: In my brain.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Now hold up, let me ask, is that dog scene
- 7:19Speaker 4: worse or where evil lurks you'll see I'm.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Talking about Yeah, but you don't see much the shock
- 7:28Speaker 2: in when Evil Lurks is the grab you know, like
- 7:33Speaker 2: when sorry bad Yeah, and when Evil Lurks, if I
- 7:36Speaker 2: remember correctly, you don't actually see him kill her. He
- 7:38Speaker 2: just grabs her, right and then they runs off with
- 7:41Speaker 2: her or does he on attack her? I can't remember.
- 7:45Speaker 3: I thought he grabbed and then like and might have
- 7:49Speaker 3: I thought he grabbed them maybe shook if anything.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, Like it's fast. It's a fast scene. It's not.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really quick, but you I I think the
- 8:00Speaker 3: reason why I like probably that in that moment is
- 8:03Speaker 3: because it's leaving it up to you to establish what
- 8:07Speaker 3: just happened. Yeah, And like in the Beyond, it's you're
- 8:11Speaker 3: seeing it and it's very like scary. Is scary, but
- 8:15Speaker 3: like seeing it happen so quickly, and it's a young child,
- 8:19Speaker 3: Like so it's a young kid, isn't that so?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Well the Beyond it's the build up of something because
- 8:26Speaker 2: when when when she begins kind of noticing the spirits
- 8:30Speaker 2: around her popping up around her, you know something's going
- 8:33Speaker 2: to happen. And then now the dog is kind of
- 8:35Speaker 2: starting to get so it's it's like building up something
- 8:39Speaker 2: when Evil Lurks. When that scene started, I was like,
- 8:42Speaker 2: something's gonna happen with a dog. I don't know what
- 8:44Speaker 2: it is, but something's going happen.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Did you see it in theaters?
- 8:47Speaker 2: No, we all shut her like after it came out.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Oh my god, I remember seeing that in theaters and
- 8:52Speaker 4: I was so uncomfortable. I was saying, just like, the
- 8:56Speaker 4: anxiety was ramping up as this you know, scenes building,
- 8:59Speaker 4: it's building. I was like, dude, I don't have a
- 9:02Speaker 4: good feeling about this. You know they're alluding to it.
- 9:05Speaker 4: You know something's gonna happen with the dog, and it
- 9:08Speaker 4: just goes like off the rails, just like the rest
- 9:10Speaker 4: of that movie. But I agree, those those type of
- 9:13Speaker 4: scenes make me very uncomfortable.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Well listen, man, I'm telling you right now, my favorite
- 9:17Speaker 2: movie of the year is Primate. So animal is top
- 9:21Speaker 2: of mine, top of mine.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I think Chris is on high alert.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Dude.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Primary is so fucking good. I mean, man in a suit,
- 9:31Speaker 2: monkey running around, kind of mixed with CGI and one
- 9:34Speaker 2: of the best John Carpenter Ripoff scores I've ever heard. Like,
- 9:40Speaker 2: if you get a chance to buy that vinyl, I
- 9:43Speaker 2: would get I haven't Boddy yet, but I would get it.
- 9:45Speaker 2: The score is really good. For Primate, and I also
- 9:49Speaker 2: saw it for free because the theater that I was
- 9:51Speaker 2: in when I saw it was like thirty degrees in
- 9:53Speaker 2: the theater. Didn't tell anybody that that's the one theater
- 9:56Speaker 2: that no heat.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, I mean for okay, since you've seen that movie,
- 10:03Speaker 4: was it? I don't know. I have a tough time
- 10:06Speaker 4: with like animal like Kujo Kujo is a prime example.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Kujo is I feel so bad for the dog and
- 10:13Speaker 4: what's going on? And is it like that or is
- 10:18Speaker 4: Oh no.
- 10:20Speaker 5: It's conceptually it's the same thing.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets he gets raised, so he hasn't.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, so he has no choice. So it is conceptually
- 10:26Speaker 3: the same thing as Kujo. It's just more intense, I'm
- 10:30Speaker 3: sure throughout the movie because.
- 10:31Speaker 2: It's but Kujo Kujo really leans into like the terror
- 10:37Speaker 2: yeah of you know, and like you feel bad for him. Primate,
- 10:42Speaker 2: it spends so little time with the with the ape before,
- 10:47Speaker 2: so like you can kind of like you see him
- 10:50Speaker 2: for a few minutes before it happens. But then when
- 10:53Speaker 2: he gets bit, the movie doesn't treat it like you
- 10:56Speaker 2: should feel bad for him. It just it becomes like
- 10:58Speaker 2: Friday the thirteenth, Like he's like a Jason.
- 11:00Speaker 4: For hes Okay, gotcha, And it never.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Leans on like the empathy part of it, because the
- 11:07Speaker 2: whole movie is just like from that moment on, he's
- 11:09Speaker 2: just causing carnage.
- 11:10Speaker 3: So yeah, see me, I would feel bad and I
- 11:13Speaker 3: hope you would kill all of them.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Well, and I can't do I can't do it.
- 11:18Speaker 5: I'm fine with him killing all of them as long
- 11:20Speaker 5: as they don't hurt him.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I hate animal stuff, and I none of the stuff
- 11:24Speaker 2: in Primate made me feel like how I feel when
- 11:27Speaker 2: I watch Kujo or other animal attack movies.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Kujo, I have to be in like the right mind
- 11:33Speaker 4: frame to watch it because I just you know, especially
- 11:36Speaker 4: being a dog lover, I get it. I know that
- 11:39Speaker 4: that's like the whole you know, the premise behind the movie.
- 11:41Speaker 4: But I still always have a tough time with it.
- 11:43Speaker 4: You see him become more and more deranged and rabid looking,
- 11:46Speaker 4: and you know, well.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I think also Kujo is hard because it's a it's
- 11:53Speaker 3: a household pet, like it's someone in someone's animal, So like,
- 11:57Speaker 3: how would you feel if that was your animal? So
- 11:59Speaker 3: you do you have some level of you know, being
- 12:02Speaker 3: uncomfortable because it's upsetting, you know, to think that could
- 12:05Speaker 3: happen to your animal. It's not not out of the
- 12:08Speaker 3: realm of possibility, you know, for something like that to
- 12:11Speaker 3: happen to your own animal. But with the with Primate,
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know, I feel like when you're getting into those
- 12:19Speaker 3: exotic animals, there's kind of yeah, you're a way towards
- 12:22Speaker 3: that because you know, it's a rarity for someone to
- 12:26Speaker 3: have one of those, whatever purpose it.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Is for, you know.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But the you saw Nope, right, Jordan, Yeah, you feel
- 12:37Speaker 2: worse for the ape and Nope in the very little
- 12:40Speaker 2: bit that he's in it than you do for the ape.
- 12:42Speaker 4: The entire time in Primate, that whole subplot was really uncomfortable.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean Primate never approaches it like that realistic,
- 12:54Speaker 2: Like Nope to me was like very everything with the
- 12:57Speaker 2: monkey or everything with the ape was very bothersome, like
- 12:59Speaker 2: I like got deep in and I never felt that
- 13:02Speaker 2: during Primate.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Well, it reminds me of that. The incident that happened
- 13:09Speaker 4: was it I don't know if it was like in
- 13:10Speaker 4: the two thousands where that woman got attacked by the
- 13:14Speaker 4: chimp and yeah, and.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That's what Nope reminds me of. It doesn't remind me
- 13:20Speaker 2: of anything Okay, Well because well because nope, nope. Alludes
- 13:26Speaker 2: back to that with the woman in the crowd. That's
- 13:30Speaker 2: where when he when he calls in the when he's
- 13:34Speaker 2: trying to back in the UFO to show the crowd,
- 13:37Speaker 2: and there's a woman in a crowd with kind of
- 13:39Speaker 2: like the veil over her face that blows and you
- 13:41Speaker 2: can see all the scars.
- 13:43Speaker 4: It's messed up.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Did you, Steve, did you see popcorn a lot of
- 13:47Speaker 2: times like in your local like video?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Where did you not like that?
- 13:53Speaker 2: No?
- 13:53Speaker 4: You know, I remember seeing it maybe in passing, but
- 13:57Speaker 4: it wasn't something that I was actively seeking out like that.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Uh, because the poster is incredible. This what's so interesting
- 14:05Speaker 2: about nineteen ninety one is that you still have a
- 14:07Speaker 2: lot of that bleed from the eighties kind of like
- 14:11Speaker 2: you know, there's still like eighties influence happening, even though
- 14:14Speaker 2: horror is pretty much dying and dead. But the poster
- 14:18Speaker 2: for popcorn is ridiculous.
- 14:21Speaker 4: It's iconic.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's incredible, Like I would get that tattooed on them.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I'm still trying to figure out a tattoo to get
- 14:29Speaker 3: for it, But I get tattoos that Unless you've seen
- 14:35Speaker 3: the movie. Unless you're a fan of the movie, you're
- 14:37Speaker 3: not gonna know what it is.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Fair.
- 14:40Speaker 3: So popcorn has always been at the top of the list,
- 14:43Speaker 3: and I still can't figure it, figure it out. I
- 14:46Speaker 3: wanted to do something from the movies within the movie,
- 14:49Speaker 3: but because you had said that, you said that, and
- 14:53Speaker 3: I now I'm like, I don't want the movie cover,
- 14:55Speaker 3: I want the I want something that's or No, I thought.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Of the.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Oh what is it called? They say, like the shock,
- 15:05Speaker 3: the shot clock? Yeah, the heart, you know, shoo clock
- 15:09Speaker 3: or something. Yeah, and it was it's the heart that
- 15:13Speaker 3: they it goes off every time one of the movies
- 15:15Speaker 3: is going to start.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Yeah, So yeah, I thought about that.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I would. I mean, There's been a couple of poster
- 15:22Speaker 2: arts that I've seen, but this main one. For anybody
- 15:24Speaker 2: who's never seen it, just look up the poster for popcorn.
- 15:27Speaker 2: It's a it's a skull in what would be like
- 15:32Speaker 2: a traditional kind of like what would they called like
- 15:35Speaker 2: the theater. They would like show people to their seats
- 15:40Speaker 2: and stuff like that in traditional theaters.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Well, yeah, it's called it definitely has more of like
- 15:47Speaker 4: the old school field to it.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it does that. But he's holding a it. Actually
- 15:52Speaker 2: it's kind of now that I'm kind of staring at it,
- 15:54Speaker 2: it's actually kind of confusing. It looks like he's kind
- 15:56Speaker 2: of holding her head that's like on a stick almost,
- 16:00Speaker 2: but the top of the head is missing, so you
- 16:02Speaker 2: could put popcorn in it and like a popcorn bucket.
- 16:06Speaker 2: But it's just the color, the look. I wish we
- 16:08Speaker 2: would go back to animated Oh please, drawn posters like this.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Because I think there's so much more timeless. I mean,
- 16:16Speaker 4: especially with like any of the you know, iconic horror
- 16:19Speaker 4: films that we go back to time and time again.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I mean, look at them. You know, there's a lot
- 16:23Speaker 4: more like love and thought that's put into them. A
- 16:26Speaker 4: lot of the stuff that we have now all has
- 16:29Speaker 4: you know, four or five floating heads, you know, kind
- 16:33Speaker 4: of all and you know, on the poster together and
- 16:36Speaker 4: then you know the title of the movie.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I think that's why I like the Scream seven marketing
- 16:42Speaker 2: so far, because they haven't done that yet. They've done
- 16:47Speaker 2: the face like Nev Campbell's face on on kind of
- 16:52Speaker 2: on the new cover that's kind of the theatrical one
- 16:55Speaker 2: sheet that eventually came out. It's just her face. They've
- 16:57Speaker 2: kind of done it updated, which I like they've done
- 17:00Speaker 2: the Texas chainsaw masker one, which I was actually kind
- 17:02Speaker 2: of offended by, but the more I looked at it,
- 17:04Speaker 2: I got used to it, even though I don't know
- 17:07Speaker 2: how they thought, like, oh, scream and textat chainsawm asking,
- 17:09Speaker 2: these are very similar. We can mess these in a poster.
- 17:12Speaker 4: What I love about the most recent one that came
- 17:15Speaker 4: out within the last week is that it feels like
- 17:18Speaker 4: a straight up callback to the original poster.
- 17:21Speaker 2: It does. Yeah, the woman nev on the front with
- 17:23Speaker 2: the tiers.
- 17:24Speaker 4: That I mean, you look at the other ones. I
- 17:26Speaker 4: think this blows any of those other options out of
- 17:29Speaker 4: the water by, you know, quite a bit.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I'm excited to see what Scream seven does.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I am. But the reason I wanted to bring up
- 17:38Speaker 2: the poster and the scream and stuff is because on
- 17:42Speaker 2: there's some writings out there for popcorn that are really
- 17:46Speaker 2: interesting because of the kind of meta element of like
- 17:51Speaker 2: the movie within a movie. So for people who've never
- 17:55Speaker 2: seen popcorn, essentially what you have is a master of
- 18:01Speaker 2: this guise, deranged killer that begins killing off a whole
- 18:04Speaker 2: bunch of college students who organized a horror movie marathon
- 18:09Speaker 2: kind of reminiscent of the William Castle kind of fifties
- 18:15Speaker 2: kind of gag horror films like the Gimmick. Yeah, the
- 18:18Speaker 2: feature to Gimmicks. So they decide to they're part of
- 18:22Speaker 2: a film class and they need to raise money.
- 18:25Speaker 3: They need to raise money for their film class club,
- 18:33Speaker 3: and they do that. They well, Toby pitches an all
- 18:40Speaker 3: night horrorthon to raise money for their club, and they
- 18:46Speaker 3: have access to a local movie theater that has since
- 18:50Speaker 3: closed that they reopen redo and get set up to
- 18:54Speaker 3: have this all night horror on that features the three
- 18:58Speaker 3: movies that include Gimmick, and obviously, everything starts to unravel
- 19:06Speaker 3: throughout the night, focusing around the main character, Maggie.
- 19:11Speaker 5: And I like, I love this movie.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't know, like just to say I love this movie.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I've always loved this movie so much. I know it's
- 19:22Speaker 3: kind of like a it's a hidden gem. I think
- 19:26Speaker 3: it's a.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Hidden gem totally.
- 19:28Speaker 3: I love it for all that it is, the simplicity
- 19:33Speaker 3: of it. It's just a straight it's kind of it
- 19:36Speaker 3: really is a straightforward just like you know, yeah guy
- 19:40Speaker 3: and like on the loose killing people throughout the night.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Nothing crazy about it.
- 19:45Speaker 3: You don't really get into much depth until the end,
- 19:48Speaker 3: you know, you don't really know.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Much because they find they find the film reel for
- 19:52Speaker 2: a movie called Possessor, which was unfinished, and there was
- 19:57Speaker 2: this big connection to Maggie's family with Possessor, and as
- 20:01Speaker 2: the night unfolds and the series of events are unfolding,
- 20:05Speaker 2: it's connected to this lost film that was found at
- 20:09Speaker 2: the theater.
- 20:10Speaker 4: The movie's very atmospheric. That's like the one thing I noticed.
- 20:13Speaker 4: It's very cozy kind of you know, once they're you know,
- 20:16Speaker 4: actually in the theater. I mean, it's all for the
- 20:18Speaker 4: most part take taking place within that one isolated setting. Yeah,
- 20:23Speaker 4: and there's something about it where it's just I don't
- 20:25Speaker 4: feel like you get that as much with horror films
- 20:29Speaker 4: like that, which it was kind of nice to, you know, refreshing,
- 20:33Speaker 4: I guess, is what I'm getting at.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Well, it's an interesting time. Nineteen ninety one is an
- 20:37Speaker 2: interesting time to call back to these kind of fifties
- 20:42Speaker 2: movies because you have three The Marathon becaus of three films,
- 20:45Speaker 2: and one of them is Mosquito, which is a giant
- 20:48Speaker 2: mosquito terrorizing town, government.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Testing, affected by government testing, and it blows up in size,
- 20:56Speaker 3: and then it starts attacking the town, the little town.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yep, yep. And then you have the Attack of the
- 21:01Speaker 2: Amazing Electrified Man, which is like the incredible melting Man
- 21:06Speaker 2: I think of that's.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Prisoner on death row who gets the chair.
- 21:12Speaker 2: And then you have the stench, which is sad, which, yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 2: you don't get to watch it. Yeah, you don't get to.
- 21:18Speaker 5: My one pet peeve. You don't get to watch it,
- 21:20Speaker 5: and you'll get.
- 21:21Speaker 4: To know you get short changed.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what happens.
- 21:25Speaker 2: And each of these are accompanied by a gag. So Mosquito.
- 21:29Speaker 2: There's a giant mosquito that they send flying over the
- 21:31Speaker 2: audience at a pivotal moment of the movie. Attack of
- 21:35Speaker 2: the Amazing Electrified Man they have like shocking bits on
- 21:38Speaker 2: the chairs to kind of give people a little jolt
- 21:41Speaker 2: at certain times of the movie. And then the stench.
- 21:42Speaker 2: They have a gas that they release into the theater.
- 21:45Speaker 3: So it's three D. It's the mosquitoes and three D.
- 21:50Speaker 3: The Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man is shocko scope
- 21:53Speaker 3: and the stenches aromorama so cool. I wish they did
- 21:58Speaker 3: that now. I wish even just privately owned theaters did
- 22:02Speaker 3: something like that you know, as a just I don't know,
- 22:06Speaker 3: like a once a year or something, just did something
- 22:09Speaker 3: like that because yeah, because it's fun, and you know,
- 22:15Speaker 3: I think it's it's just a light way to you know,
- 22:19Speaker 3: show horror movies and like very What I like too
- 22:23Speaker 3: is that these movies clearly are not good, Like they're
- 22:26Speaker 3: not good, but it's but like I could see people
- 22:31Speaker 3: like us going to something like this and enjoying ourselves
- 22:35Speaker 3: because it's it's supposed to make light of these movies
- 22:39Speaker 3: that came out and you know, just having fun and
- 22:42Speaker 3: also playing into the movie. Why I think it's so
- 22:45Speaker 3: great is because it is localized to the movie theater.
- 22:50Speaker 3: There's really only a few scenes where they're outside the theater,
- 22:54Speaker 3: and they're very brief. But we all have anyone who's
- 22:58Speaker 3: a movie lover. Lover has a sense of comfort being
- 23:01Speaker 3: absolutely are like and being with your peers, being with
- 23:04Speaker 3: people who love movies and experiencing something like that. So
- 23:08Speaker 3: being in a movie theater and all those people are
- 23:11Speaker 3: watching this movie and don't know what's happening in the
- 23:13Speaker 3: background or behind this, you know, behind the closed doors.
- 23:17Speaker 3: They don't know that anything's going on. How terrifying is
- 23:20Speaker 3: it to think that you could sit through a movie
- 23:22Speaker 3: theater like a movie and then you get to the
- 23:25Speaker 3: end of it and you find out like, oh, all
- 23:27Speaker 3: these people were actively dying while you were there.
- 23:31Speaker 5: So I think it's people to play off of that.
- 23:34Speaker 2: It's kind of like Scream too, but kind of damn it.
- 23:36Speaker 4: I was just gonna say that.
- 23:38Speaker 2: It feels like Stream two kind of bit off when
- 23:39Speaker 2: the crowd plays into yeah, the death of because they
- 23:43Speaker 2: don't know, Yeah, what's her?
- 23:46Speaker 4: Will Smith's Jada Pinkutt.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yeah. And people dress up in the movie. There's a
- 23:53Speaker 2: lot of fun. There's a really fun costume that somebody
- 23:56Speaker 2: comes as where they kind of they're like a mad
- 23:58Speaker 2: scientist and they have a second head sprouting off of
- 24:01Speaker 2: and rows up.
- 24:03Speaker 3: He's got the mechanism on his arm that makes him
- 24:05Speaker 3: throw up. Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so they had a lot of fun with it.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Clearly a little bit of history on the movie. There's
- 24:13Speaker 2: kind of some it's kind of some interesting drama surrounding this.
- 24:20Speaker 2: The movie was originally written and directed by Alan Ormsby
- 24:25Speaker 2: and they started production and not only was Jill I
- 24:30Speaker 2: don't know if her name is Scolan or Sholin Schulin
- 24:33Speaker 2: Shulin Schulin. She was actually replaced or no, she took
- 24:37Speaker 2: over two weeks in and they actually had to refilm
- 24:40Speaker 2: a bunch of scenes with her. They originally had a
- 24:41Speaker 2: different actress in the lead that for some reason was
- 24:46Speaker 2: let go or left the movie, so then they brought
- 24:48Speaker 2: in Jill Shulin to reshoot all that stuff. But this
- 24:52Speaker 2: also happened when Alan Ormsby was fired from the movie
- 24:57Speaker 2: for being quote unquote too detailed oriented with the films
- 25:01Speaker 2: within a film, so he was fired and replaced by
- 25:05Speaker 2: Mark Harrier, who's known for playing Billy in the Porky's movies,
- 25:11Speaker 2: who came into direct So there's kind of split responsibilities here.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Alan Ormsby is credited with directing the movies within the
- 25:18Speaker 2: movie and then Mark is kind of credited with directing
- 25:22Speaker 2: the rest of the modern day stuff. So there's a
- 25:25Speaker 2: little bit of shit with this movie.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Well was it Amy O'Neil who got replaced?
- 25:30Speaker 2: I believe so I think that was the name. Yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 2: I think they shot two weeks interesting with her, and
- 25:37Speaker 2: on the Synapse Blu Ray, there's a great making of
- 25:40Speaker 2: about this movie that's like an hour and some change
- 25:44Speaker 2: along and they talk about that pretty much like right away,
- 25:47Speaker 2: how they had to go back and reshoot all these
- 25:50Speaker 2: scenes with Maggie to replace that actress. I don't know
- 25:55Speaker 2: were you. Are you able to find a reason why
- 25:57Speaker 2: she left?
- 25:58Speaker 4: I'm looking into it right now. But of note, she
- 26:02Speaker 4: was in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, So take that
- 26:04Speaker 4: for what it's worth.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Who was she and whom O'Neil?
- 26:08Speaker 4: Yeah she was Amy, says Lynskynsky daughter.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah she's okay, okay yet, sure, okay.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Chris, how could you forget.
- 26:23Speaker 2: My favorite Stuart Gordon film? So yeah, a lot of
- 26:28Speaker 2: shit revolving around this movie, but it exists and it
- 26:32Speaker 2: came out perfectly fine. It's really kind of a weird movie,
- 26:37Speaker 2: I think for nineteen ninety one because it feels so
- 26:40Speaker 2: eighties mm hmm, you know, and it's what a weird
- 26:44Speaker 2: place in nineteen ninety one. You have kind of the
- 26:47Speaker 2: death of most of your franchise Slashers, but we're coming,
- 26:53Speaker 2: like we're like right on the heels of New Nightmare
- 26:57Speaker 2: and then obviously Wes Craven changing again five years later
- 27:00Speaker 2: to do Scream, kind of reamping the genre up a
- 27:03Speaker 2: little bit.
- 27:04Speaker 4: With super Meta for sure.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Yeah, this movie has a meta touched to it, and
- 27:10Speaker 2: I believe that right up. I read said that this
- 27:12Speaker 2: movie could have inspired, you know, kind of kind of
- 27:14Speaker 2: was like a stepping stone for Craven to do New Nightmare,
- 27:18Speaker 2: which really opened up the door for him to do Scream.
- 27:21Speaker 4: M hmm.
- 27:22Speaker 2: But Scream ends up with all the credit for kind
- 27:24Speaker 2: of doing all the meta stuff. Anyway, I think.
- 27:27Speaker 3: It came out at the perfect time, to be honest,
- 27:30Speaker 3: because you have to think of all the franchises that
- 27:32Speaker 3: came out before it. I feel like this is a
- 27:33Speaker 3: love letter to a slash do the Slasher to be honest,
- 27:39Speaker 3: like I think it it does. It plays like it
- 27:42Speaker 3: plays a big part after all of those franchises came out,
- 27:45Speaker 3: and you know everyone loves them so much.
- 27:47Speaker 5: This is an original thought, you know on that.
- 27:50Speaker 3: And I, I mean, we watched it not too long ago,
- 27:57Speaker 3: and I said to him, you know, this scene really
- 28:01Speaker 3: reminds me of Italian horror. It's the scene after Blood,
- 28:06Speaker 3: the one who gets who's in control of the shock
- 28:11Speaker 3: scene easing the wheelchair when she runs away from who
- 28:17Speaker 3: she thinks is Lanyard Gates, the cult leader that you know,
- 28:22Speaker 3: we think might be the killer. She's running down the
- 28:26Speaker 3: hall and it's just it's all fog around her and
- 28:30Speaker 3: she's just running in the camera slows and it's cutting too.
- 28:34Speaker 3: It's all very grainy, and it cuts to clips from
- 28:38Speaker 3: Possessor and the Flames and like him holding a child's hand,
- 28:43Speaker 3: and it's very you know, even the colors. It's like
- 28:45Speaker 3: a blue hall. Yes, and I said, this is very
- 28:50Speaker 3: Italian forward. This is very much it feels very Italian.
- 28:55Speaker 3: And then you know, the makeup in it, all of
- 28:59Speaker 3: it feels like it's pulling from inspiration from prior movies
- 29:04Speaker 3: that came before it. So I think it came out
- 29:06Speaker 3: at the perfect time, and I don't know, I like
- 29:10Speaker 3: it a lot.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it serves as kind of like a bridge between
- 29:14Speaker 4: the eighties and nineties, I think, like, you know, because
- 29:17Speaker 4: I feel like around that time horror was really trying
- 29:21Speaker 4: to find its footing again. You know, you had movies
- 29:24Speaker 4: like this, and then you know Candy Man, and you
- 29:27Speaker 4: know a number of other films like eventually New Nightmare
- 29:29Speaker 4: and then Scream kind of really in you know, Player,
- 29:32Speaker 4: which really turned the direction for where horror was going.
- 29:37Speaker 4: But yeah, I could definitely see this as being like
- 29:41Speaker 4: a very bridge horror film, you know for what we
- 29:43Speaker 4: were getting.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Well, this did not do well at the box office
- 29:47Speaker 2: at all. It was reported that the production budget was
- 29:51Speaker 2: about nine million dollars and ultimately only grossed four point
- 29:57Speaker 2: six million the box office. For some reason, it was
- 30:01Speaker 2: released on February first, so list it's not January. Yeah,
- 30:08Speaker 2: they're like, this is good enough not to release in January,
- 30:10Speaker 2: so we'll put it out right after January. But yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 2: since you know, it's developed this crazy cult following since then,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I think opening weekend was the majority of its budget.
- 30:20Speaker 2: It did two point five million dollars on opening weekend.
- 30:25Speaker 5: It was ahead of its time.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I said that when he's look at movies now and
- 30:30Speaker 3: they just didn't do well at the time, and then
- 30:32Speaker 3: now they have a cult following or you know all
- 30:35Speaker 3: that stuff. I just said, you know what, it just
- 30:37Speaker 3: might not have been the right time. Yeah, like you know,
- 30:40Speaker 3: for the rest of the world, Like for some people
- 30:43Speaker 3: like me. If I was around at that time, I
- 30:46Speaker 3: think I would have loved this. I think it came
- 30:48Speaker 3: out at the right time time. I think it's great
- 30:50Speaker 3: for like everything going on in horror and movies in general,
- 30:54Speaker 3: and just the.
- 30:55Speaker 5: Love of horror.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you know, also a lot of people.
- 31:01Speaker 3: I mean, this is like a rabbit hole, but like
- 31:03Speaker 3: going into how horror was received by the public anyway, Like,
- 31:07Speaker 3: you know, it still was not.
- 31:11Speaker 5: Widely.
- 31:12Speaker 2: You know, this is when horror started becoming like, uh,
- 31:17Speaker 2: what's the word, Like there almost became like this prestigious
- 31:22Speaker 2: level to horror because this is the time. So I'm
- 31:26Speaker 2: trying to think nineteen ninety one, this is Silence of
- 31:30Speaker 2: the Lambs. This is the year that Silence of the
- 31:32Speaker 2: Lambs comes.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Out, and a much different movie, a much different movie.
- 31:36Speaker 5: But it also that's very crazy comparison.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Well no, I'm not comparing it too, but I'm saying
- 31:42Speaker 2: that this is when the kind of general movie public
- 31:46Speaker 2: didn't know what to do with horror and they started
- 31:49Speaker 2: labeling it thriller in order to give it accolade. This
- 31:53Speaker 2: is when horror movies felt a little bit more prestigious
- 31:57Speaker 2: because that's what it had to be. There was a
- 31:59Speaker 2: little bit more I don't want to say the word elevated,
- 32:01Speaker 2: but they kind of kept changing it to thriller and
- 32:04Speaker 2: that was the excuse to be able to give it
- 32:06Speaker 2: accolade and kind of put it up with drama. And
- 32:08Speaker 2: things like that. So this was a really interesting time
- 32:12Speaker 2: for horror. But I also think popcorn is incredibly funny
- 32:18Speaker 2: as well.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Like it's dark, dark comedy.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got this very tongue in cheek humor to it,
- 32:26Speaker 2: which almost kind of reminds me of like, you know,
- 32:28Speaker 2: the like the Keystone Cops from Halloween five, you know
- 32:32Speaker 2: what I mean. But you have Mark who's constantly getting
- 32:35Speaker 2: hurt everything that he does. He gets chased by the dog,
- 32:38Speaker 2: he falls down the stairs, he gets punched in the face.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Why like even so, I mean doesn't matter for me,
- 32:46Speaker 3: just that I mean Toby who ends up being to me, Yeah,
- 32:51Speaker 3: Toby who ends up being the you know, the main
- 32:54Speaker 3: the killer in this. I love his moment when he
- 32:59Speaker 3: gets locked out of the theater and he comes into
- 33:02Speaker 3: the he comes into the what's it called the He
- 33:06Speaker 3: goes and sees.
- 33:07Speaker 5: No, no, no, no, no, he's uh with the Uh.
- 33:12Speaker 3: He goes and sees Maggie and Mark, and he thinks
- 33:16Speaker 3: it was a joke, like they locked him out of
- 33:18Speaker 3: the theater when he says, I phone a trash man
- 33:20Speaker 3: and I.
- 33:21Speaker 5: Twisted my ankle.
- 33:22Speaker 3: So like the Killer, even something didn't go to plan
- 33:27Speaker 3: and he he got locked out of the theater and
- 33:30Speaker 3: had to get back in, and you know.
- 33:32Speaker 5: That was unexpected.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And then when Bud dies, when he puts the recording
- 33:39Speaker 3: on the the shock you know control panel, and it's
- 33:44Speaker 3: the recording saying what color sequenced the colors will play
- 33:49Speaker 3: when the machine is turning on, so it'll electrocute him.
- 33:52Speaker 5: And he's like, well, what's that green?
- 33:54Speaker 4: Blue?
- 33:55Speaker 5: I forget?
- 33:57Speaker 3: Like it's showing like a killer as more realistic, Like
- 34:03Speaker 3: he approach like he's not gonna know, he doesn't care
- 34:07Speaker 3: and just saying, oh, I forget alright, like you know,
- 34:10Speaker 3: and so I I like that they added little bits
- 34:14Speaker 3: of humor.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Also the crowd. There's a dude, there's a lot of
- 34:20Speaker 2: really great like crowd comments when they show them watching
- 34:25Speaker 2: the movie, and it's like, I think one of them
- 34:28Speaker 2: is when they released the stench and the one guy
- 34:30Speaker 2: goes one guy goes like ew that stinks. Like there's
- 34:34Speaker 2: all these random callouts from the crowded random parts of
- 34:37Speaker 2: the movie, or like is it doing amazing electrified men?
- 34:41Speaker 2: Somebody gets up and starts running up and down there.
- 34:45Speaker 3: There's there's little I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if
- 34:48Speaker 3: they just told people like all these people are you know,
- 34:50Speaker 3: they're just extras and just come in and watch the
- 34:53Speaker 3: movies or do whatever. And one says like fry the sucker.
- 34:59Speaker 3: And then the other on in Mosquito that cracks me
- 35:01Speaker 3: up is when she it's in the beginning, when she's
- 35:04Speaker 3: looking at the sheep, dead sheep and it has the
- 35:08Speaker 3: giant puncture wound in the back of its neck and
- 35:11Speaker 3: you hear a guy and it sounds like the upper
- 35:13Speaker 3: level go are you sure that's the neck? And it's
- 35:16Speaker 3: a stupid little comment that are made throughout the movie
- 35:20Speaker 3: that are great.
- 35:21Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a lot. Well, it's I think there's a
- 35:23Speaker 4: lot of rewatchability with this movie, you know, stuff you
- 35:26Speaker 4: might not pick up on first watch. I think that
- 35:29Speaker 4: that's what makes it a movie like this so timeless.
- 35:31Speaker 4: And I don't know, I think we were talking about
- 35:35Speaker 4: this earlier. It does feel very much like a very
- 35:37Speaker 4: you know, hidden gem that you know, over time has
- 35:39Speaker 4: gotten its audience.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, of course. And there's a I love the
- 35:44Speaker 2: makeup effects of this movie. It was something. Yeah, it
- 35:47Speaker 2: was something that I that I told you the first
- 35:49Speaker 2: time you had showed it to me, because when obviously
- 35:52Speaker 2: spoiler alert. I think people already got that mom when
- 35:55Speaker 2: you're listening to a podcast about a movie, you should
- 35:58Speaker 2: have seen the movie. But when Toby is revealed to
- 36:02Speaker 2: be the killer.
- 36:03Speaker 6: And he's wearing the face and the flaps of the
- 36:07Speaker 6: face are hanging off at the side, and it's kind
- 36:10Speaker 6: of like one of the iconic images from the movie
- 36:12Speaker 6: where the skin flaps are kind of hanging on, and
- 36:14Speaker 6: there's a moment where he.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Like shakes his face and they slap like a dog's
- 36:17Speaker 2: ears would when they shake, And I was sitting there
- 36:21Speaker 2: with you, asking like, where is the seam? Where's the seam?
- 36:25Speaker 2: Like where is the transition from his burnt face to
- 36:28Speaker 2: the fake face? And it was incredible.
- 36:31Speaker 3: It's clear because it's layered, so like when you look
- 36:35Speaker 3: at him straight on, and even from a profile, you
- 36:38Speaker 3: see the actual burn makeup from like probably like here back, yeah,
- 36:44Speaker 3: and all around, and then you see the layer of
- 36:47Speaker 3: what's supposed to be like the mask or you know
- 36:50Speaker 3: that he's wearing that just sits around here the perimeter
- 36:54Speaker 3: of his face, and then you have his natural face
- 36:56Speaker 3: right in the center. So it's actually three different things
- 36:59Speaker 3: that they're capturing, and you know it's and even when
- 37:05Speaker 3: they go into Tina's face, mister Davis's face, you know,
- 37:10Speaker 3: it's all very quick, like the transitions are like they
- 37:13Speaker 3: make it feel like it's very fast. So the only
- 37:19Speaker 3: thing I don't like with the makeup personally is the
- 37:23Speaker 3: scene with Tina up in the back part of the
- 37:28Speaker 3: stage and he he has Davis's face and Tina kisses
- 37:36Speaker 3: Davis and it's as if, like all of a sudden,
- 37:40Speaker 3: the makeup melted, yeah, connected to her and she it
- 37:46Speaker 3: gets pulled off. And that's probably my one thing with
- 37:50Speaker 3: this movie is that I so desperately wished that they
- 37:54Speaker 3: had not revealed his natural face in that scene, because
- 37:58Speaker 3: you see it. He's wearing the stupid curly haired wig
- 38:01Speaker 3: that's sitting right.
- 38:02Speaker 4: On oh yep.
- 38:03Speaker 3: And you know he's got the turtleneck on, which already
- 38:07Speaker 3: I'm like, no, you can't wear the turtle neck. You
- 38:09Speaker 3: can't hard pass a hard pass, and so and the
- 38:13Speaker 3: like the wig is not part now sitting right so like,
- 38:17Speaker 3: and he's got a really it's cool, Like his makeup
- 38:20Speaker 3: is fantastic, but in that moment I wish it was
- 38:22Speaker 3: kind of like a Jaws thing where they didn't show
- 38:25Speaker 3: the natural makeup until the end where he rips off.
- 38:28Speaker 5: That's yeah, yeah.
- 38:30Speaker 2: They shot it up like it's like it just a
- 38:32Speaker 2: little too soon. They give it away a little too
- 38:34Speaker 2: You have a crazy scream.
- 38:36Speaker 5: He screamed. He yells in.
- 38:38Speaker 3: That moment at Tina, and they do this weird like
- 38:42Speaker 3: I know, I've heard this sound from another movie. It
- 38:45Speaker 3: sounds like a monster. It doesn't sound like a human yelling.
- 38:49Speaker 3: It sounds like a monster, like you know, just sound
- 38:53Speaker 3: bit that they used in that moment. So I think
- 38:57Speaker 3: that's the one part where like if they had not
- 38:59Speaker 3: shown that, I think if they left that alone, then
- 39:04Speaker 3: the movie would probably, in my opinion, be perfect. Given
- 39:07Speaker 3: all the craziness and you know, the things that people
- 39:10Speaker 3: laugh at.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Well, it's one of those things where you can kind
- 39:12Speaker 2: of point to a lot of these movies I think,
- 39:14Speaker 2: and say like underhands of a more experienced horror director,
- 39:18Speaker 2: you would definitely have some improvements in those bits, rather
- 39:23Speaker 2: than somebody like Mark Harrier, who's sort of like I think,
- 39:26Speaker 2: I can't really figure out, but it was sort of
- 39:28Speaker 2: like a fly by higher, you know what I mean,
- 39:30Speaker 2: who had never really directed anything before this and hasn't
- 39:33Speaker 2: directed anything since outside of some short films, this masterpiece,
- 39:38Speaker 2: complete masterpiece. The movie was completely shot in Jamaica, in Kingston.
- 39:44Speaker 4: That thought was interesting.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Yeah, this was a real theater in Kingston, Jamaica where
- 39:48Speaker 2: they shot this at Dreamland.
- 39:50Speaker 5: Yeah, in the Dreamland Theater.
- 39:51Speaker 2: And hence the band, the incredible band that manages to
- 39:54Speaker 2: play a full set without electricity in the middle of
- 39:57Speaker 2: the movie when the theater loses the electricity.
- 39:59Speaker 4: I didn't question you'll question.
- 40:02Speaker 3: It because it's so well done and the band kills
- 40:05Speaker 3: it the entire time.
- 40:07Speaker 4: That's it.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:08Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't speak about the band.
- 40:11Speaker 2: They're great though, and they play the same song for
- 40:13Speaker 2: like nineteen minutes. It feels like, was it Cocomainia dayco
- 40:18Speaker 2: Mania Day?
- 40:19Speaker 4: I'm here for it.
- 40:20Speaker 2: That's their that's their theme. So let's get into some
- 40:23Speaker 2: of the categories that I kind of figured out here
- 40:25Speaker 2: and kind of picked up. And I'm going to dive
- 40:27Speaker 2: right into the coolest one. I think. Obviously this is
- 40:30Speaker 2: kind of like me jumping on the best but best kill.
- 40:33Speaker 2: What do you guys think is the best kill from
- 40:37Speaker 2: this movie? I'm gonna go with I'm gonna jump on first.
- 40:42Speaker 2: I'll do the uh, the the death of Toby at
- 40:46Speaker 2: the end of the movie with the flying mosquito swinging
- 40:51Speaker 2: around the stage.
- 40:52Speaker 5: He's electrocute.
- 40:53Speaker 3: It's funny because he gets electrocuted and he's impaled by
- 40:56Speaker 3: the mosquito, which is like two of the deaths that
- 40:58Speaker 3: he inflicks on.
- 40:59Speaker 2: He used to kill a professor earlier in the movie.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the mosquito is mister Davis. And then Bud with
- 41:05Speaker 3: the electricity. You know, he shocks him.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Well, Budd was pretty early.
- 41:09Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a crazy one.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Poor guy. He couldn't go anywhere. He didn't have a choice.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Well, no, he he You have to think all that
- 41:19Speaker 3: electricity goes gone. He gets flung across the room, like
- 41:24Speaker 3: he's not attached to the wheelchair anymore.
- 41:26Speaker 5: He was anchored, so he gets flung.
- 41:29Speaker 2: They show the empty wheelchair right after he dies, and
- 41:32Speaker 2: I'm like, he's gone, he evaporated, He's no more.
- 41:37Speaker 4: On What about you?
- 41:38Speaker 2: What's your favorite?
- 41:40Speaker 5: I think? And it's only because it's so dumb.
- 41:43Speaker 3: This is I love it so much because it's so stupid.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Is Leon's death in the bathroom, because that's you have
- 41:52Speaker 3: to think of, like there it does play like that
- 41:56Speaker 3: would to me and I don't know if I'm misinterpreting this,
- 41:59Speaker 3: but I think that the death that relates to the
- 42:02Speaker 3: third movie, The Stench. He throws the pellet in the
- 42:05Speaker 3: toilet and locks him in there, and the pellet starts
- 42:09Speaker 3: this smoke starts coming up and it knocks him out
- 42:13Speaker 3: and then it explodes because it reacts with the light.
- 42:18Speaker 5: Above him, and all you see.
- 42:20Speaker 3: Is the light above the toilet stall, the bathroom stall,
- 42:24Speaker 3: and it just goes poof, and it's just it's craziness.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Like I love that scene because it's to me, a
- 42:31Speaker 3: filler death. It feels like he just had to do it.
- 42:34Speaker 3: He's trying. He even says like, I still have some
- 42:36Speaker 3: time to kill plays on, you know, he has time
- 42:39Speaker 3: till midnight to kill someone else. And he just decides
- 42:42Speaker 3: to dress up as Leon in the bathroom peas on
- 42:46Speaker 3: it and then Yeah, grabs Leon, throws him in the
- 42:51Speaker 3: in the stall, throws the pellet in that you see, smokes,
- 42:55Speaker 3: and then he dies.
- 42:56Speaker 5: Well that's really it.
- 42:57Speaker 2: That's the best shot is when he goes to the stall.
- 42:59Speaker 2: He goes of the uh what do you call it,
- 43:01Speaker 2: right next to him, and they look at each other
- 43:03Speaker 2: and he's wearing his face and his costume and both
- 43:08Speaker 2: look at each other and then yeah, he peels on him,
- 43:11Speaker 2: laughs and.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Then just kills him in a stall by knocking him out,
- 43:15Speaker 3: and then I mean, and it's also when when it
- 43:18Speaker 3: comes to death, it's the one I think that.
- 43:24Speaker 5: Is so not like there's no fight in it does doesn't.
- 43:32Speaker 4: No, it's a terrible way to go out.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and he just dies on the toilet like he
- 43:37Speaker 3: I don't even and no one even knows truly what happened.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Like you see the light explode and you just assume,
- 43:42Speaker 3: I don't know, did he blow up on the toilet?
- 43:44Speaker 3: Like what was the balant?
- 43:46Speaker 2: What?
- 43:46Speaker 4: Like a terrible way to go out.
- 43:48Speaker 5: Yeah, So I think.
- 43:49Speaker 3: That's my favorite because it's it's very just thrown in there,
- 43:55Speaker 3: not really him just saying I have time to kill
- 43:59Speaker 3: another person and so I'm just gonna go ahead and
- 44:01Speaker 3: do it because I don't care, and kills Leon very quickly.
- 44:05Speaker 2: What about you, Steve, what was your favorite?
- 44:09Speaker 4: I'd have to say Buds by Buds because it's just it's, yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 4: it's just so over the top, and I mean I
- 44:16Speaker 4: really feel like he gets like the worst of it.
- 44:18Speaker 4: It's like he can move you know, he's confined to
- 44:21Speaker 4: the wheelchair.
- 44:22Speaker 2: He's also so close like he oh yeah, that's it.
- 44:25Speaker 2: And it's really tense how it just he's so so
- 44:30Speaker 2: close to getting it, you know. I mean you think
- 44:32Speaker 2: he's gonna you know, he's not going to, but you
- 44:34Speaker 2: have hope that he will.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Oh my god, I felt for him.
- 44:37Speaker 2: And then he evaporates. He's gone. He turns into uh,
- 44:41Speaker 2: he turns into uh uh mister Manhattan, flows up, disappears
- 44:48Speaker 2: into particles.
- 44:49Speaker 4: Who knows where we'll see him next?
- 44:51Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 44:51Speaker 2: Right, yeah, Steve, what was your favorite of the three
- 44:55Speaker 2: movies within a movie?
- 44:56Speaker 4: Oh? Man, I think the one that kind of stuck
- 45:01Speaker 4: out to me was I think it's The Attack of
- 45:03Speaker 4: the Amazing Electrified Man. It just has such a classic
- 45:09Speaker 4: feel to it. I mean, they're all they're all cool
- 45:12Speaker 4: to watch, you know, but I would have to say
- 45:15Speaker 4: that one just because it felt like a callback to,
- 45:17Speaker 4: you know, older horror movies.
- 45:19Speaker 5: What about you the same?
- 45:22Speaker 3: I love Vernon, I love it who And I think
- 45:26Speaker 3: it's interesting that they had, you know, they had two
- 45:30Speaker 3: directors for this movie because I like the three you know,
- 45:36Speaker 3: made up movies. I like them, especially Possessor I When
- 45:41Speaker 3: I showed him this. I'm like, we have this joke
- 45:44Speaker 3: of whenever we watch something and it's kind of off
- 45:46Speaker 3: the beaten path and it's kind of weird. I'm like, oh,
- 45:49Speaker 3: I think I have that, Like I think you have
- 45:51Speaker 3: that in the collection, Like it's just something that he has.
- 45:54Speaker 5: And Possessor is really.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Is that.
- 45:59Speaker 3: He pulls the when he pulls his scalp apart and says,
- 46:03Speaker 3: come into my head, sees the weird gross like scalp
- 46:07Speaker 3: and I I really like that. I like the attack
- 46:11Speaker 3: the amazing electrified man. But in terms of like you know,
- 46:17Speaker 3: if you're looking at just the main three, but overall,
- 46:20Speaker 3: I like Possessor. You don't see it. I feel like
- 46:23Speaker 3: you only see it in bits and pieces.
- 46:26Speaker 4: You get like glimpses of it.
- 46:27Speaker 3: But I like Possessor because it feels like an actual,
- 46:32Speaker 3: like independent horror movie that someone just decided to make
- 46:35Speaker 3: about a cult leader that is, you know, just his own.
- 46:39Speaker 5: It looks like.
- 46:42Speaker 4: That's what I was gonna say, Oh, yeah, that's great. Yeah,
- 46:46Speaker 4: that's a great example.
- 46:47Speaker 5: So I like Possessor. I think that's good.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Mine is Mosquito because there's a great moment when they're
- 46:54Speaker 2: driving in the car and the mosquito punctures the roof
- 46:57Speaker 2: and sucks the guy dry, and you actually his body
- 47:00Speaker 2: like suck in, which is a great gag. But then
- 47:05Speaker 2: also my favorite part is at the end when they
- 47:07Speaker 2: just decide they have to drop the atom bomb. We
- 47:11Speaker 2: kind of drop the A bomb and they just drop
- 47:13Speaker 2: an atom bomb and kill the mosquito.
- 47:16Speaker 4: It's like, so you do what you gotta do.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Everything and everything in those you know, fifties, uh, you know,
- 47:22Speaker 2: sci fi movies felt so inconsequential, you know what I mean.
- 47:26Speaker 2: It's like, oh, drop the A bomb, no big deal,
- 47:28Speaker 2: you know. Meanwhile, kids in schools are being told, yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 2: just hide under your desk in a real nuclear bomb attack.
- 47:35Speaker 4: And that's what they did.
- 47:36Speaker 5: They said, hit the desk, hit the.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Oh man, if only they knew what was gonna come,
- 47:41Speaker 2: If only they they knew what that was gonna bring.
- 47:47Speaker 2: What about do you guys have any funny moments throughout
- 47:50Speaker 2: the movie? Because for me, it's the big guy who
- 47:55Speaker 2: just decides to take marks. So Mark shows up with
- 47:59Speaker 2: a different date obviously, like him and Maggie are kind
- 48:03Speaker 2: of an ex thing. So he shows up with Joy
- 48:05Speaker 2: to the theater and he's sitting next to her, and
- 48:07Speaker 2: he gets up to go find Maggie, I think, and
- 48:11Speaker 2: a random guy in the crowd who is like, the
- 48:13Speaker 2: best way I can describe him is like Bulk from
- 48:15Speaker 2: Power Rangers.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Like he looks more like a wrestler. Like he's just
- 48:21Speaker 3: a huge guy.
- 48:22Speaker 2: He gets up and sits next to her just randomly
- 48:25Speaker 2: and then tries to like put his arm around her.
- 48:28Speaker 2: And then when Mark confronts him, she comes back knocks
- 48:32Speaker 2: him out.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's why I like Cheryl, because Cheryl knocks
- 48:36Speaker 3: knock the guy out a problem. He's just an idiot.
- 48:42Speaker 3: He's a big idiot. And he just comes in, you know,
- 48:48Speaker 3: and just you know when he's like.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I've never hit a chick in my life.
- 48:52Speaker 3: He somehow still has, you know, morals and stuff like that.
- 48:55Speaker 3: He's like, I've never hit a chick in my life.
- 48:57Speaker 3: And she's like, that's all I need to know, and
- 48:59Speaker 3: just knocks him out face.
- 49:00Speaker 5: It just knocks him out.
- 49:01Speaker 4: It's so good he didn't see it coming.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Let's see. So I'm gonna go for character you'd want
- 49:09Speaker 2: on your side in a horror movie. I want Mark.
- 49:12Speaker 2: I want I want Mark there with me, my man.
- 49:14Speaker 2: I mean, I gotta protect him. I feel like I
- 49:16Speaker 2: gotta kind of wrap him in some bubble wrap. But
- 49:20Speaker 2: because he falls down the stairs, he gets punched in
- 49:22Speaker 2: the face, he gets locked.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Out, he's injury prone.
- 49:28Speaker 3: When they get locked out, he gets chased by the
- 49:30Speaker 3: door woman, he falls off the the fence or whatever.
- 49:35Speaker 5: He gets messed up throughout the entire thing.
- 49:38Speaker 2: It's a great running gag too. It's like very subtle
- 49:41Speaker 2: that he just is always getting hurt everywhere they go.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Falling down the stairs, though, I think is my favorite.
- 49:46Speaker 2: It's just such a dump.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Steps on his hand, which he goes to help him
- 49:49Speaker 3: when he falls down the steps all years, don't step
- 49:52Speaker 3: on my hand. Then he yells handy and you just
- 49:54Speaker 3: hear this crunch. So I don't know, I don't know who.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I don't know who i'd want on my side out.
- 50:03Speaker 3: I mean, I would want Cheryl just because she seems
- 50:06Speaker 3: the toughest. But you don't get a lot of Cheryl,
- 50:09Speaker 3: yeah in the in that like you get Cheryl and
- 50:11Speaker 3: you get Joni, I feel like the least and same
- 50:14Speaker 3: with Leon. Those three are kind of the ones who
- 50:17Speaker 3: don't know what's happening, and even like at the very end,
- 50:22Speaker 3: like Joni doesn't realize that. She thinks it's Leon behind her,
- 50:27Speaker 3: but it is Toby who was about to kill her.
- 50:30Speaker 3: So I don't I don't really know. I like Mark,
- 50:33Speaker 3: but I feel like I might stand strong on my own.
- 50:38Speaker 3: All those people might end up dying.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It's like, it's a shame that Toby turns out to
- 50:42Speaker 2: be the killer because he's like my favorite character to reveal. Yeah,
- 50:46Speaker 2: I like Toby, like he's a really good funny like that.
- 50:51Speaker 2: It's a shame, man, because that actor died very young.
- 50:54Speaker 2: He was very young, Yeah, shortly after this movie. But yeah,
- 50:59Speaker 2: like probably him or Mark the Professor whatever. I don't
- 51:02Speaker 2: care about care about mister Davis.
- 51:04Speaker 3: I do like his moment where when they first are
- 51:09Speaker 3: getting the movie theater set up and.
- 51:13Speaker 5: Is it doctor Mino's.
- 51:15Speaker 2: I can never suppli.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Yeah, he he comes in and he's trying to run
- 51:21Speaker 3: the place, and mister Davis calls Toby over and he goes,
- 51:27Speaker 3: who's this guy? Like it's so good, just who's this guy?
- 51:33Speaker 2: What's funny about the whole Landyard Gates Possessor thing is
- 51:36Speaker 2: my face and it's it always makes me laugh when
- 51:38Speaker 2: we when we watched the movie. Is how all of
- 51:42Speaker 2: a sudden, out of nowhere, mister Davis knows everything about
- 51:45Speaker 2: this film.
- 51:46Speaker 5: Well, he's the teacher, he's the professor.
- 51:48Speaker 3: No, I know.
- 51:48Speaker 2: But they find it, they're like, oh, what's this and
- 51:50Speaker 2: then they play it and he's like, oh, yeah, he
- 51:52Speaker 2: gives this whole backstory on Landyer Gates.
- 51:54Speaker 3: And well, they said they looked into it. They looked
- 51:57Speaker 3: into it, and it was.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Well from the time that she passed out till she
- 52:00Speaker 2: woke up.
- 52:01Speaker 5: Well, so can't question.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Little things like this. We ran the library.
- 52:08Speaker 5: Because he said, no, he bought into his wrap.
- 52:11Speaker 4: He did.
- 52:12Speaker 3: He said, I bought into his wrap for a little bit,
- 52:14Speaker 3: and then he stopped because then it got a little weird.
- 52:18Speaker 3: They started, you know, it started getting into the drugs
- 52:21Speaker 3: and all that other stuff. But he said he did
- 52:23Speaker 3: follow his rep for a little bit. But yeah, I think, uh,
- 52:29Speaker 3: I I do. I think I'm I might stand strong
- 52:32Speaker 3: on my own because all the all the people are
- 52:35Speaker 3: pretty pretty interesting.
- 52:37Speaker 2: I think, you know. Well, one thing we didn't bring
- 52:40Speaker 2: up is the fact that Dee Wallace is in this movie.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Yeah's mother, And my favorite part is when he's trying
- 52:46Speaker 2: to reenact the uh the ending of possessor that got
- 52:51Speaker 2: ruined the last time due to the fire, and he
- 52:53Speaker 2: has her a cast in a full body.
- 52:55Speaker 4: Cat it's so weird.
- 53:00Speaker 5: In the position she's supposed to be in with so
- 53:03Speaker 5: he has proposed like.
- 53:04Speaker 3: This, and it's so it's so ridiculous her coming out
- 53:08Speaker 3: and being in a full casted like suit thing.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, well she she has like the weirdest role
- 53:15Speaker 2: in the movie because she you obviously see her at
- 53:17Speaker 2: the at Maggie's house, which yeah, she's Dane, yeah, and
- 53:21Speaker 2: then yeah, and then there's this scene where she goes
- 53:24Speaker 2: to the theater with a gun and she's standing out
- 53:28Speaker 2: and it's actually kind of I think my favorite visual
- 53:30Speaker 2: moment of the movie. She's standing out front and the
- 53:34Speaker 2: the letters from the Marquee beg yeah at her, and
- 53:38Speaker 2: then she goes into the theater and you get that
- 53:41Speaker 2: great silhouette shot of supposed ly Lanyard who you think
- 53:45Speaker 2: is Lanyard Gates, and then she disappears until she's in
- 53:49Speaker 2: a guest.
- 53:50Speaker 5: I I like that.
- 53:51Speaker 3: I actually like that she doesn't really have a huge
- 53:54Speaker 3: role in it. I like that it's the kids. I
- 53:58Speaker 3: like that it's mainly the kids, and even like all
- 54:00Speaker 3: the adults get killed off pretty much initially because mister
- 54:04Speaker 3: Davis would be the only other person who you know,
- 54:07Speaker 3: is the adult in the situation, and they're completely taken
- 54:10Speaker 3: out of the picture and it's just all the kids
- 54:13Speaker 3: really there defend for themselves. They don't call the police,
- 54:16Speaker 3: like police aren't in this movie. No other kind of
- 54:19Speaker 3: authority figure is around. It's yeah, just the band, which
- 54:24Speaker 3: the band. Actually, that's who I want.
- 54:26Speaker 2: That's who I.
- 54:26Speaker 6: Want to because.
- 54:29Speaker 3: I know the band would take care of business when
- 54:31Speaker 3: it's NATed, So that's my answers.
- 54:33Speaker 5: I want the band.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Steve, what's a scene that you would you would show
- 54:38Speaker 2: a first time viewer A plopcorn? Oh sure, I was
- 54:44Speaker 2: just in the band.
- 54:48Speaker 4: I mean, I think like some of the callbacks to
- 54:53Speaker 4: Possessor I think would really work because I think that
- 54:56Speaker 4: that really accentuates just how creepy some of them memories
- 55:00Speaker 4: she's like trying to recall.
- 55:02Speaker 5: Are.
- 55:05Speaker 4: I think that probably like if you were to like
- 55:07Speaker 4: you know, piece together a little like tidbits from that
- 55:09Speaker 4: or maybe some of like the the kill sequences within
- 55:14Speaker 4: the theater. That's that's really tough.
- 55:19Speaker 2: I don't know what that noise? Well, sorry, yeah, that
- 55:22Speaker 2: I would show the Lander Gates see when they find
- 55:25Speaker 2: the real and they play the they play the film.
- 55:28Speaker 2: That's the creepiest part of the movie, is the Possessor.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it is creepy.
- 55:33Speaker 2: Yeah was it looking to my mind and then rips
- 55:36Speaker 2: into my head? Look into my head and then rips
- 55:38Speaker 2: his head open.
- 55:39Speaker 3: The scalp just comes apart and you just see the skull.
- 55:42Speaker 3: But also the it's it's really once again, it's a
- 55:47Speaker 3: very fast movie because there's moments where he's sitting and
- 55:52Speaker 3: his head, you know, it looks like his head, his
- 55:54Speaker 3: severed head is on the plate. Ye, but then it
- 55:56Speaker 3: cuts and it zooms in real fast, and it's just
- 55:58Speaker 3: the skull, like his dad, just skull there and it's
- 56:02Speaker 3: all really quick. Once again, feels very Italian, and I
- 56:07Speaker 3: that's what I was saying earlier, is that I really
- 56:10Speaker 3: like those movies. So I wonder how different Popcorn would
- 56:15Speaker 3: look if the original director had stayed on and done it,
- 56:21Speaker 3: because just going off of what he did for those
- 56:24Speaker 3: three movies and Possessor Mosquito is very cheesy, but like
- 56:29Speaker 3: the Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man Is, I think
- 56:33Speaker 3: is pretty good. Like I I probably would watch I
- 56:37Speaker 3: watch all three. I would watch all three nowadays, but
- 56:40Speaker 3: that one I feel like I would really gravitate towards
- 56:42Speaker 3: Yeah so and him being detail oriented in those three movies.
- 56:47Speaker 5: To me, it doesn't feel bad.
- 56:50Speaker 3: I can I can see from a production standpoint why
- 56:54Speaker 3: it could be a problem. But I think what he
- 56:58Speaker 3: did in those in those movies, they're not even movies.
- 57:01Speaker 3: They're just like, yeah, they're like clips, they're like, you know,
- 57:05Speaker 3: really brief, you know whatever, couple minute things. And I
- 57:10Speaker 3: wonder how different Popcorn would look if he had stayed
- 57:13Speaker 3: on and done the entire thing. Would it have a
- 57:16Speaker 3: darker feel than what we saw, which has a lot
- 57:20Speaker 3: more lightness to it, you know, as you go, yeah,
- 57:22Speaker 3: to break it up, like to break up the killings
- 57:24Speaker 3: and all that stuff. Like, Yeah, I wonder because what
- 57:29Speaker 3: would you think if he made just just say, he
- 57:32Speaker 3: made Possessor, What if that was like a full on movie?
- 57:35Speaker 3: Would you watch it?
- 57:36Speaker 2: Of course?
- 57:36Speaker 5: Yeah, of course because it looks so good?
- 57:38Speaker 2: Yeah, like it really does. I think I think Mark
- 57:42Speaker 2: Harrier brought in some of that Porky's kind of humor,
- 57:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean, that very cheesy eighties kind
- 57:49Speaker 2: of you know, silly humor of Mark constantly getting heard
- 57:53Speaker 2: and just some of the characters feel like they're out
- 57:54Speaker 2: of Porky's in a way, you know what I mean.
- 57:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's because I was like, why you guys were
- 58:02Speaker 4: talking about that. I was looking into Alan Ormsby, who
- 58:06Speaker 4: I believe was supposed to be the original director, and
- 58:08Speaker 4: he had actually worked with Bob Clark.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Bob Clark was like a secret producer on.
- 58:13Speaker 4: This, which I think is it's just so fascinating because
- 58:16Speaker 4: they've worked together on Have you guys seen Death Dream
- 58:19Speaker 4: or Dead of Night? I have?
- 58:21Speaker 2: I have. Alan Ormsby also directed Deranged from seventy four. Oh,
- 58:26Speaker 2: that's right, which Kate just came out on. I think
- 58:28Speaker 2: Vinegar Syndrome put that out right a couple of years ago.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Let me see, I believe they put out Deranged. I'm
- 58:34Speaker 2: picturing the cover.
- 58:35Speaker 4: Yeah that sounds about right now. But yeah, I mean,
- 58:38Speaker 4: I think it's so fascinating because you know Death Dream.
- 58:40Speaker 4: I mean, if you use that maybe as like a
- 58:41Speaker 4: reference point, I mean that that movie goes to some
- 58:44Speaker 4: pretty dark places.
- 58:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 58:45Speaker 2: I think he was a writer on Death Dream.
- 58:48Speaker 4: I think, yeah, he did the screenplay.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was on it yeah, Yeah, Bob Clark
- 58:53Speaker 2: had his hands in a lot of stuff kind of
- 58:56Speaker 2: outside of After Black Christmas, he had he had his
- 58:58Speaker 2: hands in a lot of stuff kind of just interesting.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Loosely, I think if you just if those movies as
- 59:07Speaker 3: much as they gave, they potentially gave him crap for
- 59:10Speaker 3: being too detail oriented in those I think if they
- 59:13Speaker 3: were anything less, then you wouldn't have the connection that
- 59:16Speaker 3: you do to the movie because I think it's focused
- 59:20Speaker 3: around those three I mean four movies and you know,
- 59:25Speaker 3: the gimmicks and everything and how the crowd responds to them.
- 59:29Speaker 3: I think if you just did bare minimum just because
- 59:32Speaker 3: you know, you the focal point is the rest of
- 59:35Speaker 3: the movie, Lanyard to be like Maggie, that's the focal
- 59:39Speaker 3: point of the movie. And I understand that, and you know,
- 59:42Speaker 3: you don't want a lot of time on extra stuff,
- 59:45Speaker 3: but those were an important part of the movie. That's
- 59:47Speaker 3: the whole premise. They are there to raise money for
- 59:51Speaker 3: their their class, like for their Yeah. So it's like
- 59:56Speaker 3: if if you're not going to put any effort into it,
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: then you're not going to be connected to this movie.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: It's there's not really a point, you know, So I
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: think what he did was great, and I can see why,
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: you know, they went with someone else, but I think
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: it ended up ultimately working in favor to have both
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: of those minds, you know, be a part of this
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: project and have the one do really great work with the.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Movies, you know, the.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Movies in the background and making them memorable, and then
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: the other director making the rest of the movie what
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: it is and adding that humor and you know, even
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: you know, the makeup, all that, like, just making it
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: a really good horror movie all around. So I would
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: show them I would probably do the same thing and
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: show possessor. I would probably show the scene with de
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: Wallace from her the start of the of her on
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: the phone with him at the house, you know, to
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: her being kidnapped, through the through the the.
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: Movie theater screen.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so I would probably show that scene from you know,
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: I would show that from start to finish, just Dee
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Wallace's encounter with him, because it it I think gives
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: you a good idea of ooh, this is this is
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: actually gonna be pretty cool and you really don't know
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: what it is. So I think that would be the
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: best scene to show.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, And just to kind of pivot out
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: as a as a final verdict. We kind of talked
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: about this before we started recording. But do you guys
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: see this as a hidden gem or just kind of
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: like fun trash? I don't. I definitely don't see this
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: as fun trash. I think this is a hidden gem
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: that actually, over the last couple of years, maybe the
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: last year, so, I've seen a lot more of our
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: community kind of rallying around popcorn.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: Do you guys think it's because, you know, getting like
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: a boutique released through say someone like Synapse really kind
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: of helped gain a new audience. As time has gone on.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Well when did this come out? This was so Synaps
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: released this in twenty seventeen, and this has been the
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: only blu ray I think. I know they did a
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: steel book eventually too, but I don't know.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: I don't know when I feel like it's overdue for
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: a four K.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Well, I'm sure there's some rights issues and
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: you know, yeah, I'm sure somebody will get it figured out.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: I'm sure Synaps will eventually put out a four K
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: or something else.
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: I just think we're manifesting it.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: I think I don't if Synaps didn't put it out.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: I really don't think it would have been what it
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: is now. I don't think many people would have still
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: known about it. So that makes me happy that someone,
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: you know, decided they love this movie and it would
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: be great to put it out and show it to
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: the world or reintroduce it to people that you know
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: might have known about it. But you know, so, I
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: definitely think it would have been hidden, definitely hidden from
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: the world. I mean, the guys who I spoke about
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: before we started recording that T shirt company, when I
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: said to them, are you going to do any more
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: popcorn merchandise? They were shocked that I even knew what
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: it was and that, unfortunately they weren't going to be
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: able to do more because of rights issues.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: But I was I just the fact alone that they
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: were shocked that I knew what it was. I'm like, yeah, no,
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: I do, Like.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: I know what it is, but I I a lot
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: of the people that I come across, if I say popcorn,
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: they have no idea what it is.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: I mean, It's happened multiple.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Times where I'm like, well, you're missing out on something
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: real special. Yeah, And you know, and also it's hard
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: to get like popcorn when you don't have releases like
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: before synaps, Like, how you gonna watch it unless like
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: somehow it was yeah VHS or if it just so
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: happened that it was on streaming, you know, then you
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: could watch it that way. But other than that, I mean,
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: it's importance of importance of physical media. If it's not
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: out there for everyone to see, then it's just gonna
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: get forgotten.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: So how did you watch it, Steve? Do you own it?
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Uh? No? So, I actually I previously remember seeing it
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: like way back when on VHS, and then I think
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: the most recent time that I watched it was like DVD.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: This time I had to I hate to stream it
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: this time around. Okay, but yeah, this is one that
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: I definitely need to add to my collection. Unfortunately, the
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: VHS is kind of expensive, and I feel like now
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: at this point, since I haven't bought the DVD or
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Blu Ray, that I should probably just hold out till
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: before k you know, yeah, it gets a nice, nice box.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Buy that five dollars screener copy. It's on eBay.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: You know what yourself? You inspired me?
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Well, I remember previously one of the guys that, uh
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: you knew Tyler?
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: Was it? Tyler?
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: When I had brought up popcorn or you had mentioned
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: it someone did and he wanted to watch it that
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: I was willing to give him. Wasn't it my copy
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: so he could watch it? And then I bought another.
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: One or something.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: It's like I was willing to give up mine so
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: he could watch it and have it because I love
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: I love this movie so much and I want people
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: to see it. I think I have a very strong
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: connection to it, especially watching it as a kid. And
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: you know, my brother being so kind and probably also
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: just not caring, not caring. I say, he was very kind.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: He probably was just like, yeah, go watch it. Yeah,
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: and you know, just watch movies, you know, just watch stuff.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: So I think, you know, if the more we can
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: share these movies, the better of the world will be.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: Because like, you make light of the band, but come on, now,
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: I know, but I'm saying that that's like one of
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: the reasons why it's so amazing is because you have
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: these little things. I'm like, if the band wasn't in there,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: I'd be sad it wouldn't.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Be the same movie.
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: So yeah, I think it's important.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: Well, I think that's the idea of these staff pick episodes.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Is that we don't have to. We can just kind
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: of pick movies that we love. We're not doing extensive
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: amounts of research. You know. This is just more much
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: more us just being able to have a conversation and
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: kind of talk about these movies in a way that's
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: not as like we're preparing for Event Horizon, which is
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: our main episode this month, and that is like I've
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: done so much research on it, and I kind of
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: feel a little bit like you almost get a little
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: bit like burned out on the movie diving into it
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: that heavy, and I do feel like it's not always there.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: And there's so many movies that we've talked about that
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: maybe aren't to the point where we need to dive
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: into a commentary for sure. We can just kind of
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: chat about them. Get somebody on to chat about him.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Well, Steve, I don't know if he told you, but
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: I said this idea because I said, I can't do
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: when I talk about movies, I really can't do structure.
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: I said.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: I just and I'm already nervous as is. I'm like,
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: I just want to go on and I just want
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: to have a conversation about this movie that I really love.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: And enjoy, and I don't want it to be structured
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: at all, just a free flowing conversation of us discussing
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: this movie and what we liked about it, and you know,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: because that's what movie conversations are.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Oh for sure.
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Yeah it's not.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: It's you know, if you go and meet someone, you're
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: not going to be diving into such specifics because odds
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: are the other person might not They're not probably going
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: to know everything behind the scenes.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: They're not going to know all that.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: So just to have a regular conversation about a movie
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: that you know is enjoyed by all the viewers is
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: easier for someone like me, who doesn't do this on
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: the daily and you know, is a nervous rag.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: So no, it's it's I mean, I think, like like
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: Chris was saying, I think like the fun of this
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: is just being able to kind of just hang out
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: and talk about like the things we really love about,
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: you know, each movie that we're covering. But I like that,
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: you know, we don't have to go super in depth,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: you know, conversation wise on it with you know, all
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: the special features and audio commentaries. This is just kind
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: of a hangout and to kind of shoot the ship.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. So I think if it's any consolation,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: I think you did amazing for your first podcast here.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: I was impressed.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you did amazing.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: I had there were multiple of times I had to
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: resist the urge to have any outbursts. Anyone who's on listening,
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: I have horrible outbursts of movie lines and I will
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: do it with no context and you, I don't care
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: if you don't understand.
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: I just need to get it out. That's I just
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: need to get it out, because I will just sit
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: on it entirely.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: So yeah, it's like you just got it. You're like
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: the Polka Dot man from Suicide Squab fills up and
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: you gotta get it out. I have to.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: I'll just just all explode. So I did a good
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: job with not saying anything.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: No, no, either way, I think you did amazing to
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: thank you for doing this. If you're listening to this.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: We are only a couple of days away from dropping
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: something new that we're doing, which is kind of a
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: bonus episode for the month of February. We actually have
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: on Jake from sublk Obsessed and Dave Lee, who is
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: a producer for Umbrella Entertainment and they're coming on the
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: show to talk about all things about the upcoming Monsters
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: and Curiosity set from Umbrella and some of the controversies
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: that people have been kind of screaming about with that set,
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: about the bonus features. We're gonna be talking about all
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: of that in depth, talking about kind of the creation
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: of a set like this, kind of the effort that
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: goes behind it and all. And a huge thank you
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: to Davee for doing this all the way from Australia
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: recording that, and then a little bit later this month
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: we have our Event Horizon episode coming, so lots of
