- 0:00You know, I wasted years measuring my days
- 0:03by how much of my written plan in my planner I had actually accomplished.
- 0:11How many boxes I checked, how much school we finished, whether or not the laundry
- 0:16was caught up, whatever that means.
- 0:18Whether or not I'd started dinner at 10:00 AM
- 0:22And do you know what was actually on my planner?
- 0:24A whole bunch of wishful thinking projects that I thought I ought to be doing
- 0:29or really ought to have already done
- 0:32And so whenever I looked around at my real life, it didn't match up.
- 0:39It didn't measure up
- 0:42to the plan that I had made or to the life I had really envisioned myself living.
- 0:48And even on days where I was getting a lot done, where I felt very
- 0:53productive, I would look around and there was always more to do.
- 0:58There was no such thing as getting ahead
- 1:01or even getting on top of anything
- 1:03And so it's no wonder that I felt overwhelmed and stressed out when I looked
- 1:11at the reality that was in my life and how far short it came from my imagined ideal
- 1:18Now, then there was a point where I decided to just forego the
- 1:23ideal and do the bare minimum and count it all as good enough.
- 1:28That also didn't work very well.
- 1:30It was not satisfying
- 1:32It wasn't responsible
- 1:34And that was not walking with Christ in my day-to-day life
- 1:39And yet, eventually I did realize not only that my stress was a product
- 1:46of the story I was telling myself in my head, but I also realized I could
- 1:51change that story to be more true
- 1:55More realistic?
- 1:57and therefore more encouraging.
- 2:00And when I did that, my stress went away and my productivity actually increased.
- 2:07So today I wanna share three ways that you can get rid of your stress response
- 2:14by telling yourself a more true story about your life so that you can walk in
- 2:20fellowship with God and your family and experience satisfaction at the end of
- 2:26a day because of a job well done, even if that job was not what you predicted
- 2:32it would be when you made your plan.
- 2:34And if this kind of practical Christian homemaking That focuses on faithfulness
- 2:40is what you're looking for, then hit that subscribe button.
- 2:44That's what I talk about here every week
- 2:47Now, grab a basket of laundry to fold, and let's talk about
- 2:51getting rid of your stress
- 2:53So the reality is that that stress response grows when I compare the day that
- 3:00I am actually having with an imaginary day I thought I was supposed to be having
- 3:07Often my plan for the day, my ideas of how the day is supposed to go, do
- 3:12not involve children interrupting me.
- 3:17Does not involve a child who needs extra math help or the interrupted reading
- 3:23It definitely does not involve anyone getting injured or sick,
- 3:29and yet those things happened in my real life all the time
- 3:34responding faithfully and wisely and well in the midst of a life
- 3:39that goes not according to plan is actually the whole point.
- 3:45That's
- 3:46That's maturity.
- 3:47That's taking responsibility.
- 3:50It's caretaking
- 3:52And so instead of seeing myself as a broken machine who's supposed to
- 3:56be continually chugging out products
- 4:00I can see that my job is to respond well to the life that's actually unfolding
- 4:07in front of me, whether or not I predicted that that's what would happen.
- 4:12And so instead of looking at everything that was happening to me
- 4:17and mentally and emotionally insisting upon what I wanted to have happen
- 4:23instead, I could just move forward and take care of the business at hand
- 4:29Now that doesn't mean that I'm just respondingâ¦
- 4:33Now that doesn't mean that I'm just Flying by the seat of my pants
- 4:38reacting to what's ever in front of me.
- 4:41Responsiveness is not the same as reactiveness, and the key difference
- 4:48between the two and the difference that makes one stressful and the other not is
- 4:54your priorities, and really knowing what your priorities are because one of our
- 5:01priorities is not finishing our checklist
- 5:05And I had three key priorities that I learned to put first and foremost
- 5:10in my responses so that I knew when I needed to stay on track or when
- 5:16I needed to be diverted to rep-
- 5:19to respond appropriately to the people whose needs I was supposed to be helping
- 5:25Even if that meant that our homeschool lesson didn't happen, that morning time
- 5:29was truncated, that we didn't finish the book or the lesson, that math
- 5:34took twice as long as I had predicted.
- 5:37That's all okay if these three priorities are in order
- 5:43The first priority is stay in fellowship Who cares if the math lesson gets done if
- 5:52we've just had an angry argument about it?
- 5:55That's not a win
- 5:57The visible output, the things that get checked off do not define success.
- 6:04What really matters as we are living together as a Christian family is
- 6:10repenting when we sin against one another and restoring fellowship
- 6:16Now, of course, fellowship with one another begins with fellowship with God.
- 6:22So time in the Word, time in prayer, these are what set the foundational base for the
- 6:28other relationships happening in the home.
- 6:31And then with those other relationships, it matters how we treat one another.
- 6:37It matters more how we treat one another than what gets done That
- 6:42doesn't mean that we don't worry about getting things done, but it means
- 6:45we take care of first things first.
- 6:49When we ask for forgiveness, when we sin against one another, which
- 6:52includes when mom sins against the kids, because that happens,
- 6:58and the kids know that it happens,
- 7:00And we should not have two sets of expectations, one for how kids behave
- 7:04and one for how adults behave All of us should ask for forgiveness when
- 7:10we sin against the other party, and then the other party receives that
- 7:15apology, offers forgiveness, and then you can move on You can get things
- 7:23done now that you are back on a team in fellowship working together instead
- 7:30of being antagonists to one another.
- 7:33Keeping fellowship first actually allows you to end up getting farther
- 7:41than you would if you prioritized getting the thing done no matter what
- 7:46Priority number two
- 7:49is being faithful in my duties.
- 7:52And oftentimes my duties are different than what I planned on paper.
- 7:58My paper tends to reflect my idealistic hopes and dreams for
- 8:03my life, but my duties and my responsibilities are about fulfilling
- 8:09the roles that I have been given
- 8:12Which means taking care of milk when it gets spilled without losing my cool.
- 8:18It means helping a set of siblings reconcile after
- 8:22they've started an argument.
- 8:24These are not things that I ever plan, but they are my duty as a mother
- 8:30And so my priority needs to be fulfilling my duties that are in front of me
- 8:37Which might be totally different than the plan I actually made for the day.
- 8:41The duty in front of me wins over the wishful thinking plan.
- 8:46That's my second priority.
- 8:48And having that priority in place allows me to take a deep breath, to let go of
- 8:54that wishful thinking set of expectations about my life and how I think it should
- 8:59go, which allows me to step out of overwhelm, to step out of stress, and
- 9:06calmly handle the life in front of me
- 9:09Wishful thinking planning is at the bottom of most of our overwhelm and most
- 9:17of our inability to switch over and just handle the real life in front of us.
- 9:23This is why I came up with the daily card method
- 9:26The daily card method is where we pick a top three for the day, not
- 9:32our full set of ideals and hopes and dreams for the day, but a top three.
- 9:37And then that list is also very flexible, and it can go out the window and be
- 9:44replaced by a new top three when the day goes haywire, when the kid vomits, when
- 9:51the call for a family emergency comes.
- 9:55We're not a slave to the expectations that we set at the beginning of the week.
- 10:00We are in a daily negotiation with identifying and working
- 10:05with the, the duties that we've actually been given each day.
- 10:10The daily card method is a way to walk in that reality without stress
- 10:17and without wishful thinking.
- 10:18I have a free workshop all about how to do this.
- 10:22It's called From Overwhelmed to Organized, and you can find it
- 10:26at simplyconvivial.com/organized,
- 10:29and that link is also in the description.
- 10:32But even disciplined self-management is not the final goal or the be-all, end-all.
- 10:39We're not trying to become efficient machines doing important things The
- 10:46third priority that we have to have in place in order to flexibly adapt and
- 10:53do well with the life that's in front of us is that we have to recognize
- 10:58that we are to abound in good works
- 11:02And so we are to be busy and pouring ourselves out and being productive,
- 11:09but just not in a way that prioritizes output, but rather prioritizes people.
- 11:16And people are unmanageable and unpredictable.
- 11:20They usually don't fit into our preconceived plans.
- 11:25But our job, especially as mothers, is to be responsive to
- 11:31the needs of the people around us.
- 11:33And so when you notice that moment to have the heart-to-heart conversation
- 11:39with a child, even if it means postponing bedtime, postponing
- 11:44dinner prep, not getting something on your list done, you take that.
- 11:49And then you don't beat yourself up for dinner being late or for
- 11:53not getting to sweeping the floors.
- 11:56You recognize you did the more important thing You helped mother,
- 12:01parent, educate, disciple your child.
- 12:05You took that opportunity and you made the most of it That matters so much
- 12:10more than having the floor mopped.
- 12:13It's not that we should never mop the floor, but we do need
- 12:17to have first things first.
- 12:19And when we put first things first and we don't sweat our checklist, we
- 12:26find we really do have enough time to keep things running functionally
- 12:32If I skip mopping on Tuesday because something actually more important came
- 12:37up, that doesn't mean I'm giving up on mopping or it's never gonna happen.
- 12:43It just might happen at a different time or a different
- 12:46day, and that's totally fine
- 12:49There are no bonus points
- 12:52or gold stars for accomplishing your checklist exactly when you
- 12:58put the tasks on particular days
- 13:01But the bonus as a mom is having teens and young adults that are productive members
- 13:09of society who text you encouraging quotes and funny things they saw in the day.
- 13:17That comes after a buildup of years, really decades, of putting in the
- 13:26time mothering and discipling them as a higher priority than accomplishing
- 13:32the plan that we laid out for things
- 13:35So the bottom line is that we can't judge our day or ourselves by whether
- 13:42or not the checklist that we made for the day actually happened, or what
- 13:46percentage of it happened in the day.
- 13:49We need to be asking, "Did I maintain fellowship with everyone today?
- 13:55Did I prioritize their needs and disciple my children today?"
- 14:00Did I prioritize the work that actually matters?
- 14:04Or did I put off the people
- 14:06in order to get things the way I wanted them to be
- 14:10A day can be well done even with unfinished work The question
- 14:18is not did I finish everything.
- 14:20The question is did I stay in fellowship with God and my husband and my children?
- 14:26Did I exercise wisdom and faithfulness?
- 14:30Did I attend to the people given to me and pour into them?
- 14:37When I failed, did I repent and rejoice and repeat?
- 14:43Your checklists just can't tell that whole story of the day
- 14:47And ending the stress response about how much of that checklist happens doesn't
- 14:53come when we finally figure out how to do it all, and it doesn't even come
- 14:58just by making that checklist shorter.
- 15:01We get rid of that stress response and the feeling of overwhelm when
- 15:06we rightly orient ourselves to our actual responsibilities and
- 15:10pay attention to what matters
- 15:13and do our duties, complete our housework in keeping with our actual priorities and
- 15:20not disordering those responsibilities
- 15:24now, if you need a simple way to practice figuring out your priorities
- 15:29and what really matters, then be sure to register for that free workshop
- 15:34from Overwhelmed to Organized.
- 15:36You can find that at simplyconvivial.com/organized.
- 15:41And remember, no matter what, to repent, rejoice, repeat
